[ letter from the editor ] Repeat after me: Change is a good thing. That, anyway, is what I feel compelled to tell the mystified drivers I’ve seen searching for parking meters in Clayton. People are stymied by, well, the absence of meters where they once were omnipresent. Now, there is a new and improved system in place on many downtown Clayton streets whereby a single ‘electronic pay station’ allows drivers to conveniently pay by currency or credit card. The only problem is, it can be anything but convenient. Say you’re running late for a lunch meeting at Oceano and you jump out of your car with half the roll of quarters you recently got at the bank for just this purpose. Then you notice there is a new system in place, one you are not yet familiar with, but hope someday to master. Just not today. Victory! The pay station takes coins, so you ply it with quarters—then wonder how the parking patrol will know you paid? Uh-oh, you say to yourself, further action is required. Dig out your readers, notice the ‘print’ button, press it, retrieve your sticker, go back to your car, unlock and affix sticker to windshield. (Wait a minute—change that to toss the sticker on your dashboard. Why mess up your car window along with your lunch date?) This is a fictional situation. Any resemblance to actual events or persons is purely coincidental. One can see how this change might not be perceived as an improvement. That was apparently the assessment of the two women I witnessed outside Starbucks trying to decipher the pay station there. After awhile, they just got back in their car and relocated near an actual parking meter. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

world. She had no job, and she and her infant son had no place to live. Then she found out she was pregnant with her second child. “It seemed like I was going backward,” she recalls. “I’d lived in a shelter before, but I wanted a better life for my children. I just didn’t know how to get it.” So she turned to Haven of Grace for help. Today she has a full-time job, and she and her children live in a two-bedroom apartment of their own. “For the first time in my life, I’m really proud of myself,” she says. Haven of Grace is a residential home where homeless pregnant women, ages 18 to 24, can redefine their lives. “We make a positive difference in their lives, providing a comfortable, caring place for them, teaching them valuable skills and offering emotional support,” says executive director Scott Gee. “We help them take control of their future and set their lives on a positive new course.” The Haven was established in 1988 by members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Ladue, in partnership with Grace Hill Settlement House and Junior League of St. Louis. What began as a small facility with only seven clients has grown to a block-long city campus that includes classrooms, housing and a playground. Today The Haven serves up to 17 families at a time, and as many as 50 families a year through its 10-year aftercare program. In addition to providing a nurturing environment, The Haven empowers young mothers to achieve long-term stability. “Through our education programs, they develop the knowledge, skills and resources they need to take Susan Sherman, Susan Block, Barbi Macon, Kathy Betz care of their family,” Gee explains. New moms learn about parenting, budgeting, household management and healthy relationships. Those who don’t have a high school diploma are required to enroll in a GED program; others attend post-secondary programs and employment workshops. “Gradually, they become more independent, progressing from on-campus dorm rooms and transitional housing to their own homes or apartments,” he says. Haven of Grace celebrates its 25th anniversary April 4 with A Grace-full Affair, a fundraising gala at The Four Seasons Hotel. Founding board member Sally Lemkemeier will be honored at the event, which is co-chaired by Kathy Betz, Susan Block, Barbi Macon and Susan Sherman. “Sally’s devotion to our mission is unmatched,” Gee says. “She’s a beloved advocate, supporter and friend to The Haven, and we’re thrilled to be honoring her.” As a ‘graduate’ of The Haven, Janet still receives case management support, scholarship opportunities and other services. “But I’m standing on my own feet now,” she says. “Without The Haven, I don’t know where my kids and I would be. Thanks to the caring people there, I learned to take care of myself so I can take care of my family.”

in the car and run errands, meet up with friends or join family for an important event. But for the elderly or others with mobility issues, a simple lunch date or trip to the doctor’s office can take hours—that’s if they can coordinate transportation at all. It’s a problem Mike Flotken was all too familiar with. His mother-in-law uses a wheelchair and must rely on others for transportation. Though services were out there, she found them inconvenient. “There are some organizations that are cheap, but they need a two-hour window to pick you up. It could take a full day to get to and from a one-hour doctor’s appointment,” Flotken says. “There are other companies that pick you up but are expensive and charge by the mile.” Spurred by this dilemma, Flotken created Mobility for U, a rental company for wheelchair-accessible minivans. Customers can rent an easy-to-drive Toyota Sienna equipped with side-entry ramps, wheelchair tie-downs and enough space for two wheelchairs or scooters. Vans can be rented for part-day, daily, weekly or even monthly rates. “It provides a dignified way to transport the elderly and people with disabilities wherever they want to go. It adds freedom in their life,” he says. When he purchased his first van, he immediately called his mother-in-law’s caregiver and asked to have her wait in the driveway. “I came over on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and she reluctantly agreed to wait outside,” Flotken remembers. “When I pulled up, there was a big red ribbon on the van door, and she cut it. Her eyes lit up, and she asked, ‘Where are we going?’” The answer: anywhere she wants. Flotken says the concept really took off during the holidays; one man rented a minivan to drive his 92-year-old mother to family functions at Christmas that she otherwise could not have attended. “The families who’ve rented are thrilled that they don’t have to be on someone’s schedule,” Flotken says. Additional services are available for clients who may need assistance with heavy scooters or helping their passenger in and out of the van. “If someone rents our vehicle and needs a caregiver to go with the van, we can provide a companion. If they need mobility equipment, like a smaller walker or a transport wheelchair, we can provide that, too,” he says. Flotken hopes to expand his fleet and offer additional services as Mobility for U enters its second year. “I see this concept growing, but not at the expense of giving ultimate care,” he says. “If we grow, it will be with high customer service and customer care levels. We’re not moving boxes; we’re moving people.”

Cops say the dude made four fall visits to lots where homes were being built, sometimes breaking into construction trailers to help himself to goodies, including aluminum window frames. Sis, who has not been implicated, sold a heap of scrap metal. Cops were led to her brother, who was charged with felony stealing. Wonder what he gets her for her birthday. Many of the tips we pass along from area police departments are just common sense. Still, some folks seem not to have the common sense God gave a gnat. At any rate, here’s a few pointers from Chesterfield cops in hopes of helping cut down on burglaries: Close the garage door. (Well, duh.) If your car isn’t locked in the garage, make sure the electronic door opener isn’t in your car. This sort of warning began,
be one of the dozens—count ’em; dozens—every month for whom cops leave friendly notes in the mailbox. And don’t fall prey to the old he-said, she-said. If your husband or wife said he/she closed the door, when he/she is out of the room, check anyway. Did any of you walk off some shoe leather by taking our recommended tour of Clayton’s public art? There’s even more than we described—and some not yet arrived, to celebrate the city’s upcoming centennial. For anyone who hasn’t visited Shaw Park since 2009, a Renoir has been installed in the Centennial Garden. Venus Victorious is a bronze created by the French master in 1916 and on loan from the Saint Louis Art Museum. Anyone who finds the female ideal in today’s stick-figure models would do well to inspect the full-figured form represented here.
In the ‘sensory garden’ at Shaw is the elaborate Egg by Carol Fleming, colorful and intricate as a Fabergé but sturdy… and textured to invite the viewer’s touch. In Oak Knoll Park is Deer Bench by Catherine Magel, which invites strollers to rest, either by sitting or by pausing for a closer look. The glossy black piece is fiberglass over steel and polyurethane foam. Centennial? Clayton was granted its city charter on April 7, 1913. As part of its celebration, the city is to unveil a bronze and steel work by James Surls, Molecular Bloom with Single Flower, which will stand more than 25 feet high between the ice rink and the aquatic center. Concepts show a slender, elegant vase with highly stylized floral display, perhaps a species yet to be discovered deep in the rainforest. The life-size models of a T. Rex and triceratops that once faced off in Clayton’s Oak Knoll Park moved to Forest Park in 1983 when the Museum of Science and Natural History combined with the Planetarium to form Saint Louis Science Center. Want to help encourage a young man or woman who has stepped onto the wrong side of the law? Volunteers are needed from communities served by Kirkwood School District for the Juvenile Conference Committee program, which aims to decrease youth offenses that include shoplifting, trespassing, alcohol or marijuana possession, and disorderly conduct. Volunteers would join a committee of about six who would meet with offenders and their families in an effort to help them learn accountability and divert them from the formal justice system. The program, administered by the Family Court of St. Louis County, is expanding by reaching out to other area communities, including U. City and Webster Groves. For details, call CHESTERFIELD 314.615.8446.
Attention, male enophiles: Women make great wines, too. Both genders (of legal age) may enjoy a scavenger hunt and tastings throughout Maplewood during the city’s seventh annual ‘Women Making History’ event, March 2. For openers, Saint Louis Cellars hosts ‘Women in Wine,’ a free demonstration at noon featuring winemakers of the fairer sex. Scavenger hunt hopefuls can attend the tasting and get line cards for check-in starting at 1 p.m. The hunt’s winner and 19 of her or his foodie friends will, at a later time, enjoy scrumptious goodies at Vom Fass, where there’s reverence for the time-honored European traditions in crafting gourmet culinary condiments, fruit vinegars, exquisite oils, exotic liqueurs and fine and rare spirits. For more details and to pay the hunt’s $10 registration fee, visit cityofmaplewood.com/scavenger When a log cabin was found inside a Conway Road home being demolished, Town & Country history buffs scrambled for the funds to preserve it. They managed to come up with enough for the cabin to be taken apart last month, timber by timber. Until enough money is raised to rebuild it, the pieces are in storage at the city’s Drace Park, which is already home to two log cabins. The Kropp cabin was built in 1855; all but two of its timbers are original. The Estill cabin is a two-room structure relocated and rebuilt with funds from the county’s Municipal Parks Grant Commission. Drace Park is a 9-acre tract just inside I-270 and south of Clayton Road.

along with numbers that Jack Jones, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, et al., were known for. The Chairman of the Board’ himself, Frank Sinatra, may make an appearance, as well. The vintage movie house has had a rough go of it since it first closed, in 1979. Sterling Pen, Dan Stevens’ family’s company, bought the theater about a decade after its last picture show. Subsequently, it was home to a dental school, then an antiques mall. Meanwhile, there have been encroaching developers, politics as usual, and stringent city building codes (a new sprinkler system has been out of Stevens’ financial grasp), but the theater has been OK’d for smallish audiences. A play was staged recently, so this will be the second performance in a space that many have their fingers crossed may yet come back to life. The exterior was lovingly restored, with a refurbished Mediterranean clay-tile roof, stained-glass windows in a musical motif, and fine wood entry doors. It has tremendous street
appeal, but Golterman acknowledges the inside “is still a work in progress.” Equestrians in and around Wildwood are whinnying with delight, now that Go Ape has abandoned plans for a treetop adventure course in Greensfelder Park. The Maryland-based company now has its sights on Creve Coeur Park. Go Ape, more than a simple ‘zip line’ operator, builds obstacle courses that include tree platforms, ropes and swinging bridges (sorry, Tarzan, no vines). County officials are all for the money-making concern, which after its first year could be the source of $100,000 in revenue for the cash-strapped parks system. The county’s biggest and busiest, Creve Coeur Park encompasses 2,114 acres, including a lake. Greensfelder is a hilly 1,734 acres in the Ozark foothills popular for camping, mountain biking, and riding and boarding horses. Perhaps petitioners and WHOAA (Wildwood Horse Owners and Acreage Association) yanked the reins hard enough for Go Ape to change course.

It’s been known as Lake, Hog Hollow, Gumbo, St. Andrew, Bonhomme, and later—River Bend & Chesterfield Village. Chesterfield officially celebrates its 25th birthday in June, and now with a population of 47,484 (as of the 2010 census), it is the state’s 14th-largest city. So what makes the area tick? << meet Nora Amato of Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce Chesterfield is one of St. Louis’ youngest cities, incorporated in 1988. But now executive director Nora Amato’s roots go much deeper. Her paternal greatgrandfather was a country doctor, making house calls from his office on Long Road via horse and buggy. Her mother’s side includes some Eathertons, for whom Eatherton Road, a.k.a. Highway 109, was named. It was a daunting task to replace the chamber’s first head, Joanie Schmelig, 70, who passed away in August after 30 years at the helm. Amato, a chamber member and Lindell Bank and Trust exec, eventually landed the job. In the community than behind her desk since coming aboard in October. Her biggest challenge? “Keeping up!” Amato exclaims. An economy that was struggling elsewhere was scarcely a blip on the screen in a town that’s welcomed numerous national corporate headquarters and entrepreneurial firms, not to mention two outlet malls under construction in the valley. “We’re on an upward swing and still growing,” she beams. << the next generation | tpx warriors Before he became Redbirds skipper, Mike Matheny was wrestling with how to respond to repeated entreaties from Chesterfield area parents to coach youth baseball. The result? The so-called ‘Matheny Manifesto,’ which since 2009 has served as the blueprint for a character- and faith-based approach to America’s pastime. Youth baseball really bugged Matheny. His manifesto delineated what he’d require from kids—and their parents—if he was to have any part in it. We’ve paraphrased a few key points of the TPX Warriors, * the organization t. >> Parents! Butt out. No heckling of umpires or coaches. No belittling of players. You are grownups. >> Baseball is a game. It should be fun for kids to play. >> Cheering, clapping and other expressions of support are expected, but parents must trust coaches to express displeasure. >> Character building includes spiritual guidance. Coaches share their faith in God. >> Players are expected to become involved in community service, which includes but isn’t limited to sharing their love of the game with those less fortunate. It was on a Warriors baseball/mission trip to the Dominican Republic in 2011 that Matheny got the call inviting him to be manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. He took Warriors colleague John Mabry with him as the team’s hitting coach. While Matheny’s involvement has lessened, the Warriors soldier on. Practice started last month. The likes of former NFL player Casey Cramer have signed on as officials, and parents, many of them busy professionals, serve as board members. *

Q: The firm I work for encourages employees to use their vacation time, but my boss grumbles every time I take off. Anything I can do to appease him? ——Needing Time Off in Winchester A: Chances are your boss is going to grumble no matter what. But could it be he’s upset with you because you’re not giving him enough advance notice about taking time off? You are entitled to take vacation without feeling guilty, but the next time you plan a vacation—and certainly before booking any nonrefundable flight reservations—meet with your boss to discuss scheduling arrangements. Indicate you want to minimize any disruption to the work flow in the department. Be prepared to suggest two or three alternative timetables and ask which of them he feels would work best. If your boss is reasonable, he’ll appreciate your being so considerate and will work with you to negotiate a mutually agreeable vacation schedule. Once the boss gives his approval, follow up with an email thanking him and confirming the details of what was agreed upon, so there is no misunderstanding. Keeping your boss informed? Priceless! Q: i’m a mid-level manager at a large company with a heavy workload. I like my job and I’m on friendly terms with my boss, but she continually asks me to run personal errands, i.e., picking up her dry cleaning. I’m happy to help out, but it’s getting out of hand. How can I get her to stop without wrecking our relationship? ——Being ‘taken to the cleaners’ in Clayton A: People who work together often develop trusting, personal relationships that extend beyond the workplace. Though every relationship is different, keeping on an even keel sometimes requires a bit more ‘give’ than take. And in your situation, add to that, a little finesse. I’d suggest arranging an informal get-together with your boss outside of work. You might begin the conversation by mentioning how swamped you’ve been at the office and that she seems even busier. You want to establish a tone of mutual sympathy to set the stage for what you want to say next. Follow up by letting her know that you don’t mind helping her out, but lately, there doesn’t seem to be enough time in your day. You might then lightheartedly suggest that hiring another person in the department would be a godsend. If your boss gets the message, she might admit that she has been leaning too heavily on you and will vow to take steps to remedy the situation. However, if you’ve misinterpreted your boss’ friendship and it’s ‘her way or the highway,’ you need to decide which road to take: either grin and bear it, or quietly go about finding a different job or arranging a transfer to another department. The beauty of working at a large company—you probably have other career options.

Keeping th For more than 100 years, the Church of St. Michael & St. George has counted some of the most famous names in St. Louis among its parishioners. Scores of influential community leaders and social titans have worshiped there, including Skinkers, Danforths, Olins and Spinkses. “But our job is to see life through Christ’s eyes and to live according to his words, not the words of the Social Register,” says The Rev. Andrew Archie, church rector. “Christ isn’t all that interested in wealth and power. Everyone is equally welcome here.” The church, which celebrated its centennial in 2012, started as two separate congregations. St. George’s Protestant Episcopal Church began in 1845 in what is now downtown St. Louis. The Church of St. Michael and All Angels began in 1911 when the head bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church decided to build a mission just west of Forest Park to serve the growing number of residents who were following the city’s westward shift. “It was known as the Parkview area, home to a subdivision called Skinker Heights,” explains parishioner John Tyler, who serves as church historian with fellow parishioner Harriet Davidson. “The area was part of Thomas Skinker’s family farm, and Skinker had been one of the founders of St. George’s.” The bishop secured an anonymous gift of $40,000— $947,000 in today’s dollars—and established a building committee that included Thomas Skinker’s son, attorney and real estate developer T. K. Skinker. The committee chose a lot at the corner of Wydown Boulevard and Ellenwood Avenue in Clayton, and ground was broken on All Saints’ Day in 1912. The building was designed in the same English Gothic style and constructed with the same Missouri red granite and Indiana limestone as the buildings on the nearby Washington University campus. While construction was going on, the congregation met at the university’s Graham Chapel. “Miss Isabella Skinker, a community leader and T.K.’s daughter, was asked to choose the church’s name,” Tyler says. “She decided on ‘Michael’ because it was the only saint’s name in her prayer book that hadn’t already been used in St. Louis.” Isabella also was instrumental

in attracting top clergy and building the congregation, he adds. The new church thrived during the next 15 years. But the Church of St. George, the fourth-oldest Episcopal church in St. Louis, was having financial problems. “The two parishes merged as The Church of St. Michael & St. George in 1928, and the new parishioners were warmly accepted, with many appointed to leadership positions to give them a sense of ownership,” Tyler says. The congregation held strong despite the Great Depression and World War II. The St. Michael School began on a part-time basis in 1969, adding a grade each year. But no institution is without growing pains. Following a period of tremendous growth throughout the 1980s under a beloved rector, the church began to lose membership in the ‘90s when a new rector took over. “The congregation simply didn’t take to him,” Tyler says. “He resigned in 1997, but by that time, the church had reached a crisis point.” After a two-year reassessment period under an interim director, the parish welcomed the Rev. Archie in 2000. Today, the church, which began with a mere 76 worshippers, is more than 2,000 parishioners strong, with about 550 members regularly attending Sunday services. It is widely known for the beauty of its traditional Anglican liturgy, its outstanding music program and choir, and its strong commitment to community service. “Our church is a place for reflection, renewal and connection, not just through prayer, but through reaching out to others,” Archie says. “Every member of our congregation is a minister.” Parishioners live their faith by choosing from a wide range of activities. Some participate in the church’s annual mission trip to Nicaragua; others tutor kids in city schools and work with the homeless. “The world is up for grabs today, with America’s future uncertain and politicians at each others’ throats,” Archie says. “The need for hope has never been greater. St. Michael & St. George has always been a place for hope, and with God’s grace, it will remain so for the next 100 years.” february 20, 2013

[ Below The Belt Treating Problems
by mary konroy
We all have to go, but sometimes the going is not good. Urinary tract infections, kidney stones and prolapsed organs can make voiding a real pain. This is also true for men who suffer symptoms of an enlarged prostate. In this edition, local experts and physicians focus on common problems and associated issues.
[ enlarged prostates ]
[ urinary incontinence]
Man On The Run: When a guy always has to go…
Treating Female Urinary Incontinence
Frequent urination is the most common symptom of an enlarged prostate. Treatment ranges from medications and laser therapy to surgery.
Having a baby and age are risk factors for incontinence. Treatment ranges from diet and exercise to devices and surgery.
>> Dr. Arnold Bullock,
>> Marla Smith, nurse practitioner,
professor of urologic surgery, W.u. School of Medicine Many men have an enlarged prostate, but only a few need surgery early. Most men are initially treated with medication. Three forms are considered effective: nutritional supplements, alpha blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, which shrink the prostate. Alpha blockers are the No. 1 prescribed medication for an enlarged prostate. They relax the bladder neck and the prostatic urethra, making it easier for urine to flow. As men age, their prostate grows and constricts the urethra, the tube that transports urine from the bladder. Saw palmetto is the most popular nutritional supplement for an enlarged prostate. Limited studies, undertaken in countries where the supplement is regulated by the government, have shown that it can reduce symptoms. But there are no good, objective studies on saw palmetto in the United States, nor is it FDA-approved. Five-alpha reductase inhibitors are like a diet pill for large prostate. They can reduce prostate size by 25 percent, but they take months to work. Voiding difficulties are common as men age and can be treated easily with a daily pill prescribed by a primary physician. Whenever there’s blood in urine, see a urologist!
>> Dr. Abe Hawatmeh,
president, South County Urological Laser therapy is meant for men who have failed medication or other conservative treatments for an enlarged prostate. It’s also an alternative to traditional surgery, called a transurethral resection of the prostate, or TURP. The Greenlight XPS laser is among the powerful tools available today to treat an enlarged prostate. It’s quicker than earlier generations of lasers and also can be used on larger prostates. The laser uses light energy to ‘vaporize’ or destroy excess prostatic tissue blocking normal urine flow. We administer Greenlight laser therapy in a special treatment room in our office. The patient receives a quick-acting anesthetic — the same used in a colonoscopy — by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Laser therapy is then initiated. It takes about 20 to 40 minutes to perform. The patient recovers for about 30 minutes, and is then discharged wearing a catheter that he removes the next day. The entire procedure, from check-in to discharge, takes two hours, tops. Laser therapy provides the same benefit of traditional surgery without the complications.
kidney stones //
Women’s Care Consultants Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine. Treatment depends upon the type of incontinence and, at our practice, begins with the least invasive approach. We look at a woman’s diet. For example, caffeine, a diuretic, can exacerbate incontinence. Pelvic-floor strengthening exercises called Kegels can help. Sometimes medical devices are used. Older women who don’t want to undergo surgery for incontinence may use a pessary. This silicone device is inserted in the vagina to hoist sagging pelvic organs, including the bladder. A new tool we use is InWave, a small portable device operated by batteries. It sends a weak electrical current to the pelvic floor muscles through a vaginal probe. The current causes the pelvic floor muscles to contract, strengthening them over time. I call it ‘Kegels for the lazy woman’. Women use InWave once or twice a day for six weeks. Then they go on a weekly maintenance program. We teach them how to use the device, then they follow through at home. Medication can cause side effects, and surgery is the option of last resort.
>>Dr. Teresa L. Knight, CEO,
Women’s Health Specialists of Saint Louis If a woman leaks urine because her pelvic-floor ligaments are torn or stretched, they have to be repaired. They need surgery. No amount of Kegels will fix them. It makes me so mad when women think they deserve their incontinence because they didn’t do enough Kegels. That’s just hogwash. Vaginal childbirth is the primary cause of pelvic floor damage, which can cause incontinence. And stress incontinence is the most common type. But women who have not had children can also have incontinence. As estrogen levels drop with age, pelvic floor ligaments become more lax and the neck of the bladder becomes more mobile. Sudden movements like coughing or sneezing put pressure on the abdomen, which bears down on the bladder. Urine leaks. The only cure for damaged bladder supports is surgical repair. I usually use a vaginal mesh sling. It is inserted through a tiny incision in the vagina, placed under the neck of the bladder and stretched under the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder). It takes about 30 minutes. Women notice an improvement immediately.
“Inadequate hydration is the No. 1 risk factor in developing kidney stones,” says Dr. Elizabeth Williams of Urology Consultants. Other factors include diets high in salt, animal protein and oxalate, which is found in tea, spinach and nuts. Contrary to what some patients think, soda does not contribute to stone formation. “But heredity does come into play,” she says. “Kidney stones can run in families. And once you form a stone, you have a 50 percent chance of having another.” There are several types of stones, each reflecting its composition: calcium oxlyate, phosphate, uric acid, cystine and medication-induced

stones. Some medications for high blood pressure and HIV increase the risk for kidney stones. “Gastric bypass is also a known risk factor for stone formation,” Williams says. Treatment depends more on the stone’s location and size than on its composition, says Williams. Minimally invasive options include external shock wave therapy and ureteroscopy. “ESWL uses sound waves to break a kidney stone into small pieces for easier passage,” she explains. “With a ureteroscopy, a special viewing instrument is inserted into the urethra, through the bladder and to the ureter, to see the stone’s location.” The stone is then fragmented by lasers or removed with a basketlike instrument. Open surgery requires several days of hospitalization.

[urinary tract infections (UTIs) ] They itch. They burn. They are a pain. Although most UTIs are caused by sex and bacteria, some anatomical abnormalities can also prompt the problem in women. >> Dr. Richard Muckerman,
St. Louis Women’s Healthcare Group Women have more urinary tract infections (UTIs) than men because of their anatomy. The length of the female urethra is about one-and-a-half to 2 inches, whereas the male urethra is much longer. The urethra transports urine from the bladder. The environment around the female urethra is moist, so bacteria can colonize and ascend into the bladder with sexual activity. Although intercourse is the primary cause of UTIs in premenopausal women, another factor comes into play with post-menopausal women. It’s estrogen loss. As the ovaries stop producing estrogen, the lining of the vagina and urethra atrophy. They become thinner and lose their ability to fight bacteria. Methods to reintroduce estrogen can help protect against a urinary tract infection in post-menopausal women. But some women can’t take estrogen because they have had breast cancer or a blood clot, or some other medical issues. Replacement methods include estrogen rings, which continuously release the hormone for three months; tablets, which are inserted twice a week; and estrogen creams, which are applied two to three times a week. Women with recurrent UTIs may also need a urine culture to make sure they’re taking the right antibiotics.
>> Dr. Kent Snowden,
Saint Louis Associates in OB/GYN Inc. Take preventive measures. Empty your bladder after sex, drink plenty of fluids and seek medical help if you have symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI). Symptoms include burning with urination, frequency, urgency, pain or pressure above the pubic bone, and blood in the urine. Occasionally a woman will also complain about her urine smelling strange. Simple UTIs are treated with a course of antibiotics lasting three to seven days, taken twice a day. Some commonly prescribed antibiotics for a urinary tract infection include Macrobid, Septra and Bactrim. If a woman gets recurrent UTIs, I tell her to void immediately after intercourse and pop an antibiotic as a preventive measure. I don’t want the infection to spread to her kidneys. Those are pretty important organs. Sometimes hospitalization is necessary with a kidney infection. It’s also important to void when you feel the urge. Holding urine is not good. If a woman who practices healthy voiding habits continues to get UTIs, even with antibiotics, I’ll send her to a urologist to see if there is an anatomical problem.
kegels // “Women should start doing Kegel exercises in the third trimester of pregnancy and continue for the rest of their lives,” says Dr. Jodie Rai of Women’s Healthcare Consultants of St. Louis. “It should become a habit just like other exercise.” And if patients forget to do them, this obstetrician-gynecologist reminds them at their annual well-woman exam. “I’ll also coach them on how to perform them.” When done properly and consistently, with at least three sets of 10 daily, Kegels strengthen the pelvic floor, which is a shelf of connective tissues, ligaments and muscles that support the uterus, bladder and bowel. Childbirth and age can make these organs prolapse, resulting in symptoms such as pelvic pain and pressure, and the unintentional passage of urine, gas and, sometimes, fecal matter. Kegels can help relieve symptoms, says Rai. “They can also improve orgasm for women and, anecdotally, are said to make sex more pleasurable for male partners.” But locating the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments can be a challenge for some. One method is to stop and restart the urine stream. “Don’t make that a habit,” cautions Rai. “Constant stopping and starting can lead to a urinary tract infection.” If women can’t contract the proper muscles, Rai sends them to a physical therapist for pelvic rehabilitation.

This time of year, if you’re not reaching for a tube of the richest hand cream you can find, you’re among the rare few. The cold just seems to wreak havoc on the hands (and most other parts of the skin). And with hands, we can do very little to offer protection from the added stresses windy, cold air put on a part of our body already abused by dish washing, hair shampooing, pencil pushing and diaper
changing—not to mention constant sanitizing in an effort to keep those nasty winter flu germs at bay. As for beneficial ingredients, shea butter, vitamins and natural extracts are touted. But I always say, the more you like a cream, the more apt you are to keep applying it. So the best criteria for what to purchase rely as much on scent and texture as on ingredients.
<< Origins Ginger Hand Lotion You can’t beat a pump bottle for convenience, which means if you keep this one on your desk or kitchen counter, it will get plenty of use. This is enriched with safflower and sunflower oils, aloe and vitamin C. The wonderful scent comes from bergamot, lemon and lime. $ 15
<< Pre de Provence 20% Shea Butter With 20 percent shea butter, this cream comes from that queen of herbal areas, Provence, France. So it is not only softening, but infused with beneficial herbs, as well. Look for rosemary, almond, sunflower, jojoba and more. The 1 ounce tube is perfect for the purse. $7 | provided by Soft Surroundings
<< Yon-Ka Paris Nutri-Protect Made with 97 percent natural ingredients, this hand cream is made with shea butter, olive and coconut oils, and grapefruit extract. $33
<< Laura Mercier Almond Coconut Milk Hand Creme A thinner cream, this one nonetheless stays on the hands for a long time and the coconut and almond scent, while heady, is pleasant in a comfort-food kind of way. $15

Meet Becky | Our associate editor Rebecca Koenig is nearly a year out of college. While a few subtle changes to her undergrad look work for day-in-and-day-out, sometimes she needs to glam it up for a night on the town with her beau, Andy. She Wants | A dramatic change in hairstyle: “I blow-dry it pretty much every time it gets wet, but I always style it straight.” Her Style | Clean-cut and preppy, Becky has milky skin that requires practically no coverage and well-shaped brows that nicely frame her face. For day, she adds black mascara, blush and lip gloss—and for a sexier evening look, some simple eyeliner. She dresses casually and conservatively for work and daytime activities, but isn’t afraid to break out “a fun little dress” for date night. >> We turned to Blown Away, the blow-dry and makeup bar in Clayton. Owned by a mother-daughter duo, the salon doesn’t offer cuts, facials, manicures or any other extended spa item. Instead, it focuses on styling, makeup and a complimentary something to sip. While Becky enjoyed Champagne, she and her stylist, Joey Manley, the self-proclaimed ‘blow-dry king,’ and her makeup artist, Lisa Lipsitz, discussed her look. “I can never get curls to hold,” Becky says. “So can you give me this style?” She selected a Veronica Lake-inspired look of glamorous curls and dramatic eyeliner. To prep her wet hair, Manley used Moroccan Oil, focusing on Becky’s dry ends. After blowing her thick hair completely dry, Manley used a curling iron to create tight ringlets. For great shape, he alternated two-inch sections clockwise and counterclockwise, then combed her curls into gentle submission. A little teasing in the crown provided lift but also helped hold the style. He finished with hair spray and turned her over to Lipsitz. “Match your foundation to the color of your chest and hands, rather than your face,” Lipsitz advises. After primer, she used air brushed makeup by Temptu for foundation and bronzer. “When you’re doing someone’s makeup, it’s important to consider what they normally look like—not to take it too far outside her comfort zone,” the stylist said. Becky’s natural tendencies were honored in the makeup palette when she chose shimmery earth-toned shadows in Beach Honey and Beach Bronze by Bobbi Brown. Chocolate shimmer liner and black mascara intensified her entire face, instantly upping the sex appeal quotient. To help her makeup last all night, Urban Decay setting spray was misted from jawline to hairline.

with Becky to see how she fared after walking out the salon door. “My boyfriend was so sweet: When I showed him, he said I didn’t need this much change to look beautiful. But by the end of the night, he said he could get used to it! I don’t think I’d do this all the time, but for a special occasion, I’d try this look again. I was amazed—the curls are still holding a day later.” want to appear in Town & Style and get a free makeover? Opened in the former Houlihan’s spot in the Galleria, Vida is the second location of an upscale Mexican eatery launched in Charlotte, N.C. The operating partner, Drew Graefe, is a hometown boy, and the food is fresh and house-made, with tortillas provided by a local Mexican tortilleria on Cherokee Street. The ambience is mucho notches fancier than ‘cantina,’ and the meals are very large and authentic. While it looks like a chain restaurant, the ingredients are super fresh and natural, like plantains, avocado, cucumber, jicama and crab—with much of the menu raw or rolled, not deep-fried. Our Sampler Platter ($18) easily fed four with Garlic Shrimp, Queso Chipotle Dip, Spinach-Mushroom Taquitos and Chicken Enchilada. The taquitos were delicious corn tortilla rolls stuffed with sauteed mushrooms and fresh spinach, fried crisp and crusty. They had a little bite, thanks to the green chile sauce underneath them. The Garlic
Shrimp also were noteworthy, with their tender, sweet flesh and garlic-laden sauce. But the starter standout was the Ceviche ($9), a generous margarita glass filled with cured shrimp and crab, along with raw jicama, cucumber, avocado, onion and cilantro. It was all tossed in a slightly sweet and tangy, smooth tomato salsa. We piled it on tortilla chips for a little bit of cantina heaven. Also very good is the Guacamole ($9), offered with optional mango topping. A Carnitas entree ($16.50) came as large chunks of boneless pork cooked crisp and served on a platter with an impressive array of garnishes and two sides, in my case Ripe Plantain and Black Bean Smash and Grilled Corn with Queso Fresco. The meat was excellent, with just enough fat to impart flavor but not so much as to be unappetizing. The sides were good, especially the plantain-bean mix, which had a pleasant sweet quality. But the corn was disappointing, since it tasted pretty

much like canned corn. Combo Plate 2 ($16) included one of the meal’s highlights, the Crab and Shrimp Enchilada. The corn tortilla was rolled around a fair amount of seafood dotted only with a few kernels of corn and bits of green onion. The lump meat crab flavor dominated, and the mild drizzle of creamy poblano tomatillo sauce did not interfere with the delicate shellfish. The standout dish was the Filet Mignon ($25), which in addition to being a delicious piece of meat, got a south-of-the-border treatment with flavorful poblano pesto, Mexican cheeses and blackened tomatillo salsa. The cheeses replaced the bleu cheese or butter often topping a filet. The Fried Plantains I chose were a special treat: starchy and pan-fried with a coating of crisp, caramelized sugar. For dessert, our Cajete (ice cream with goatmilk caramel and toasted coconut) was quite good, although I would have liked more topping.

quick [homegrown bites [ David Sanborn by rebecca koenig
by rebecca koenig Six-time Grammy-Award winning saxophonist and Kirkwood native David Sanborn returns to St. Louis Feb. 22 to play in the Hot Sax, Cool Jazz! Jazz St. Louis gala. A doctor’s recommendation kicked off Sanborn’s musical career. Paralyzed by polio as a child, he recovered mobility, but was told by his physicians when he was 11 to take up a wind instrument for therapy. He chose the saxophone, wanting to play jazz. “I remember how the case smelled, that new horn smell, and it was just so great, the real deal, the pride of ownership,” Sanborn says. He was inspired by the jazz he listened to on KATZ and radio stations out of Memphis, Tenn., and Little Rock, Ark. “I spent a lot of time in bed because I was sick, and the music was just this great theater of the mind. It became my real life.” Playing by ear from jazz records, Sanborn developed a new perspective on his city. “That’s when I started to become very aware of what an important music town St. Louis was,” he says. “I got to experience a lot of the great music scene in the late ’50s and early ’60s, in Gaslight Square.” Despite his father’s concerns about the “unwholesome” life of a musician, Sanborn says pursuing a performance career was always his goal. “I was young and fearless and bulletproof and went on ahead,” he says. After playing in the Kirkwood High School band, he studied saxophone at Northwestern University and the University of Iowa. In 1967, Sanborn went west to scope out the scene in San Francisco. “A friend called and said, ‘You gotta come out here. There’s some wild stuff going on,’” Sanborn recalls. Instead of returning to college, he joined the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and david sanborn photo by lynn goldsmith played at Woodstock soon after. Sanborn toured and recorded with Stevie Wonder, who opened for the Rolling Stones in 1972. “The Stones had a big party at Mick Jagger’s rented house in the Hollywood Hills, and I got home at 9 a.m. and was pretty out of it,” Sanborn says. “I got a call from Stevie Wonder’s producer, saying, ‘Stevie needs you in the studio now.’ I thought, you gotta be kidding me!” Sanborn did one take for a song he’d never heard before and was back at the hotel within the hour. A few months later, having forgotten the recording session, he was surprised to hear himself playing on Tuesday Heartbreak. “I can hear myself just sort of fishing around for what to do!” Sanborn says. The saxophonist released his first of 24 albums, Taking Off, in 1975. He has worked with many stars, including Paul Simon, Gil Evans and Linda Ronstadt, and considers James Taylor and David Bowie, for whom he played the sax solo on Young Americans, among his closest collaborator friends. From 1988 to 1990, Sanborn hosted the NBC show Night Music, which featured Eric Clapton, Miles Davis and Leonard Cohen. He later hosted an eponymous syndicated radio show. Some of Sanborn’s favorite performance venues, he says, have been those he grew up visiting in St. Louis: Powell Hall, The Pageant Theater, The Muny, and the Fox. “Just to be in that beautiful cake box of a theater was such a thrill for me,” he says of the Fox. Sanborn’s induction into the St. Louis Walk of Fame in 2004 was also meaningful. “That was such a tremendous honor for me,” he says. He is looking forward to returning to town, he says, “to be able to honor my debt to the musical heritage of St. Louis.”

Does the glass make a difference? I recently participated at a wine seminar hosted by Riedel glassware in which the topic was the influence of stemware on the quality and appearance of wine. George J. Riedel himself was the facilitator, and the audience was filled with top sommeliers from around the country. It was a true eye-opening experience.
Yes, Size Matters. Shape and rim diameter matter, too, for optimally showcasing the true varietal characteristics and tasting profile of the wine. According to Riedel, “Stemware has to translate the ‘message’ of the wine to the human senses.’’ This message is based on four different tasting pillars: the nose showcases the intensity and aroma of the wine; the texture creates the mouthfeel; the flavor features the varietal characteristics; and the finish develops the length and aftertaste. To compliment and develop these pillars, Riedel and other stemware producers create glassware to enhance your tasting experience.
So which glass should I use? To develop the full potential of each wine, use the stemware created for each grape variety. It is crucial that glassware direct the wine to the right part of your mouth. Your tongue has four tasting zones that identify sweet, salty, sour or bitter components. The appropriate glassware for young, crisp white wines has a small and narrow bowl. This guarantees the accurate temperature and pronounces their fruity flavor and acidity. The best shape for big, flavorful whites like chardonnay is an oversized bowl-shaped glass. This balances the large and round characteristics of these wines’ fruity notes, creaminess and acidity. Cabernet sauvignon and other big, bold red wines are best served in tall, large glasses. This allows the wine to breathe and develop the full spectrum of aromas, acidity and tannins. Pinot noir is more suited to an oversized round bowl, similar to a chardonnay glass. The round feature compliments the fruity characteristics of the wine. There are as many styles of glassware as there are grape varieties throughout the world. Educate yourself by tasting the same wine in different glasses and explore the differences. Enjoy!

Earlier this month, St. Louis theatergoers had the rare opportunity to see two David Mamet plays in one weekend. They had the even rarer opportunity to see a David Mamet play with no profanity and low testosterone. That play was an early one-act called The Duck Variations. It was more subdued than the usual Mamet fare because it featured two old men sitting on a bench by Lake Michigan, watching the ducks on the lake and commenting on life, love and death. Being Mamet’s creations, their conversation was not without its disagreements, put-downs and one-ups. The Duck Variations is a slight piece, mildly diverting, handled well by veteran actors Bobby Miller and Richard Lewis, under Deanna Jent’s direction at Mustard Seed Theatre. It was paired with Christopher Durang’s even briefer, affectionate portrait of a suburban matinee lady giving a lecture on theater, with her own special etymology of several words connected to this art form she loves. The always-splendid Peggy Billo starred. Plenty of profanity and testosterone can be found in the other Mamet play. Speed-the-Plow, still running through this weekend at New Jewish Theater, typifies Mamet. Again it features two men, but these guys are in the middle of life, at the height of their powers. Bobby Gould has just been made the head of production at a movie studio. His old buddy and business colleague, Charlie Fox, brings him a shallow, violent script with box office potential and an interested major star that could enhance Bobby’s status.. Enter a woman to disrupt the male bonding. She’s only a temp secretary in Bobby’s office, but she has her own hidden agenda for becoming a player in Hollywood, and it creates a moral dilemma for Bobby and a violent confrontation between him and Charlie. At New Jewish Theatre, Tim Ocel directs Christopher Hickey as Bobby, James Michael Reed as Charlie, and Sigrid Sutter as the secretary. R-S Theatrics has announced it’ll do Mamet’s reconsideration of his movie mogul, a one-act called Bobby Gould in Hell, in December. We enter a different world at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, the world of Jane Austen’s Regency England in a dramatization of her first novel, Sense and Sensibility. The distinguished director, playwright and producer Jon Jory, founder of the Human Festival of New American Plays at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, directed his own adaptation, one of four he’s done of Austen’s works. Scenic designer Tom Burch provides a lovely minimalist set meant to allow the many scenes to flow without interruption. Nevertheless, the scenes are interrupted, simply by being many and often brief, so the actors have a hard time building dramatic rhythms and tension and developing characters in depth. But the actors playing the two sisters at the heart of the novel, Nancy Lemenager as Elinor, the thoughtful one, and Amelia McClain as Marianne, the lively one, unfold the joys and sorrows of their amorous adventures and their growing maturity. And everyone in the large cast manages to look and sound at home in Austen’s world. But we hear Austen only through her characters; Jory has chosen not to introduce a narrator to speak the novelist’s words directly. The Black Rep now offers an intriguing play that created major interest and critical acclaim in both London, where it won the Olivier Award for best new play, and New York. Written by Katori Hall, The Mountaintop imagines Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s last night at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis and his surreal encounter with a maid there. And just opened at the Fabulous Fox for a two-week run is the greatest theatrical event since P.T. Barnum’s last extravaganza – or so it would seem: The Book of Mormon.

zombie? Billed under the new genre zom-rom-com, Warm Bodies is the latest movie to pair a lovely living lady with an attractive guy who inconveniently happens to be undead. But while vampire flicks take themselves a little too seriously, this film forsakes the melodrama for ironic humor and a sweet courtship between the daughter of an overzealous zombie-hunter and a cute zombie who believes love can reverse the ongoing apocalypse. With great one-liners and only a vague moral about the importance of personal connection, Warm Bodies is the antidote to saccharine fantasy films. Should You See It? Yes! —R.K. side effects >> Just when I was about to ask my doctor about Ablixa,
a drug that evidently causes you to have manic monkey sex with Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones, I found out it doesn’t really exist. It was all downhill from there. The movie is about a woman (Rooney Mara) who murders her husband (the tasty Tatum), supposedly while sleepwalking under the influence of an anti-depressant. The film starts out like a cross between Hitchcock at his most complex and Billy Wilder at his most jaundiced, but ends up being Steven Soderbergh at his most preachy. On the upside, it’s full of good-looking people who wear stylish clothes and live in enviable apartments. Jude Law is tremendous as the well-intentioned shrink; Zeta-Jones is deliciously creepy as Mara’s former shrink. Should You See It? Oh, why not. It’s entertaining enough. But, like sex on Prozac, ultimately unsatisfying. —T.D.

Back in Brass
From earrings to étagéres, brass is back in a big way. While metals can read as cold elements, this version is all warmed up, thanks to its texture and versatility. You can incorporate brass into your home by changing outdated hardware on furniture or simply adding a gorgeous bowl to your coffee table tableau. Whether you already own some unfortunate ’80s polished brass from your mom’s attic, or you find brass items at your vintage haunts, you can resurrect these and turn them into something much cooler and of-the-moment. First, test by scratching an inconspicuous area with a sharp knife or by ‘the magnet test.’ A magnet will not stick to brass, but it will attract steel and cast iron. Solid brass will be bright yellow. If your object is not, it’s most likely brass-plated and should be cared for with a non-abrasive cleaner. To age lacquered brass, simply rub with a light-grit sandpaper then dip into a brass darkener, which you can find at a hardware store. For larger items, brush on the solution, leaving it on until your preferred time-worn shade is achieved. Our found vintage candlesticks (top left) have developed a lovely patina over the years and are an economical way to add this metal of the moment.

OOH LA LA HOME FURNISHINGS]
by tony di martino Dee Hencken doesn’t want to talk about design trends. contemporary “Our clients aren’t interested in fads,” says the owner of Ooh La La Home Furnishings. “Just because the shelter magazines decree that puce is in doesn’t mean everyone should jump on the bandwagon. Your home should reflect who you are, not some marketing whim. It should meet the needs of your family, not some decorator’s ego.” The typical Ooh La La client is between 35 and 55 years old, Hencken says. “They’re established in their career and way of life.” Some have recently upgraded to the home of their dreams; others have moved into a loft and don’t know how to deal with it; still others are downsizing as their kids leave the nest. “They’re aware of who they are and what they like—they just need someone to help pull it all together,” she explains. “And that’s precisely what my four designers and I excel at.” Ooh La La is a lifestyle store. “When you walk in, you don’t see 500 of the same thing piled on shelves,” Hencken says. “Our displays are gorgeous, but they’re meant to serve as a starting point, not a blueprint.” The 9,000-squarefoot showroom offers a lavish selection of Old World European country-style furnishings, transitional pieces, unique antiques and accessories. An on-site Express Blinds & Draperies Studio provides custom-designed window treatments and shutters. Hencken helps clients transcend design cliches. “Don’t decorate by the numbers; take an eclectic approach,” she urges. “For example, pair a traditional leather sofa with sleek chairs upholstered in a light, creamy fabric or a faux animal print.” Add
lamps and a bleached wood cocktail table topped with polished nickel accessories and a pile of antique books. Instead of the usual wool rug, choose a sisal carpet and throw a faux animal hide over it. “And no matching end tables!” she says. “Try one in a deep wood, the other with a mirrored, deco photo by Bill Barrett top. Add a classic oil painting, but give it a twist with a simple frame.” It’s easier said than done. “It takes a talented, experienced eye to make it work, or it’ll look like a jumbled mess,” Hencken warns. She and her team work closely with clients, weaving color, texture and proportion until they mesh seamlessly. “You don’t have to redo your entire home to get a lift,” she adds. “You’d be surprised at what a few mirrors, a rearranged bookcase and some fresh artwork can do.” The end result should be interesting, timeless and comfortable. “The greatest thing a client can say to us is, For the first time, I feel completely at home in my own house,” Hencken says. “That’s the ultimate compliment!”

Big things come in small packages, and this home is the perfect example. When I entered this tiny condominium in Clayton, I was surprised by its distinct look and feel—and its utter uniqueness. ornate & Elaborate Rarely does one encounter a near-perfect synthesis of high drama, high style and exquisite detail. Yet a 1,400-square-foot condominium in an exclusive high-rise on Hanley Road exhibits just that. The owner, a member of the St. Louis society scene for more than 30 years, lovingly created an otherworldly environment. The drama hits at full force the moment you step across the threshold, where you are instantly transported into a romantic scene of theatricality that would make Hollywood envious. Ceilings disappear into walls, and walls become kaleidoscopes of mirrors reflecting glittering crystal chandeliers. Light is absorbed into everything, and every object calls for attention. Yet a close look at the individual parts reveals an extraordinary attention to detail. Take, for instance, the faux malachite box sitting on a table in the living room. It was made by

Bob Mayes and Mike Craig were well-known in the local carriage trade, most notably for their gorgeous picture framing, but also for their objets d’art of superb quality and ingenious design. Their handiwork abounds here, as on the side wall of the bar, which is hung with their military medallions.

by rebecca koenig listing price | $2.15 million listing agent | steven lange and stephanie oliver of dielmann sotheby’s international realty
Above the rooftops of Clayton, Steve Schankman says he has the best view in town, enhanced by the benefits of living at one of the area’s toniest addresses, The Plaza in Clayton. “This condo, in my mind, is probably No. 1 in town,” he says. “Nothing can compare in terms of location, services and view.” Schankman admits the livin’ is easy. “When you pull in, your car is valet-parked by very nice valets,” he says. “If you have groceries, they help you bring them in, and carts are always available to use to jump on the elevator. Your mail is right there when you walk in the door, and there’s always someone at the front desk.” He has made ample use of the building’s amenities during his years there, including the fifth-floor outdoor pool and the conference and party rooms. “On the second floor, they have a great gym,” he says. “On four, they have a beautiful outside area for the dog walk, and having a small King Charles, the dog walk was an important part of the day.” Schankman says he enjoyed getting to know his neighbors in these shared spaces. “It’s a friendly building,” he says. “We had a party for all the King spaniels in the building, with cake and wine and cheese.” Originally owned by Lester Miller, No. 2203 features luxury interior design work by Robert Loccoco. “When I come home every night, I feel like I’m staying at the Four Seasons or The Ritz-Carlton,” Schankman says. Situated on the 22nd floor, the home’s patios face east and offer clear views of downtown. Furniture Schankman describes as “sleek, modern, and contemporary” adorns rooms with walnut and limestone floors and ebony paneling. “The kitchen is great for a guy like me. I don’t cook at lot, and it’s more of a bar with all the appliances behind it,” Schankman says. The Carrara marble bathroom has an oversize jet bathtub, a steam shower and a double-sink vanity. The master bedroom suite has wood panels set into the ceiling and hand-painted stripes on the walls, as well as a sitting area, oversized closet, and concealed television that can be rotated for viewing from most parts of the room. The full-sized second bedroom faces south. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the careful design maximizes the residence’s 3,200 square feet. “We have a holiday party and can easily fit 40 to 50 people in here,” Schankman says. With the home’s convenience and beauty, “This is as good as it gets.”

Lake Forest Confections >>
by rebecca koenig | photos by bill barrett
The chocolate shell snaps to release a fruity ooze when you bite into a French cream from Lake Forest Confections. Pomegranate, key lime and mandarin orange-filled nuggets are nestled in boxes behind the glass display case, alongside toffees and mints drizzled with dark chocolate. Established by artisan candy makers in 2004, the cozy corner shop delights chocolate lovers with confections made the old-fashioned way. Petits fours with dainty decorations vie for attention with giant German chocolate cakes. Caramels, molasses puffs and pastry-flavored truffles are sold by the box or individually by weight. The head candy maker and pastry chef learned to craft these candies from his father-in-law, who learned from his father, a Parisian confiseur. “Almost everything is stirred by hand in small batches,” says owner Dan Abel. “We pride ourselves on clean ingredient disclosures; there are no artificials.” Vanilla caramels, for example, are made with only sugar, cream, butter, milk, corn syrup and vanilla. Those French creams are stuffed with real fruit, so bits of orange rind and raspberry seeds make their way into the mix. The popular pecan nut balls take 14 days to make, and Abel says customers can tell the difference. “They appreciate the attention to detail,” he says.
The Boulevard >>
A resort-like respite from the chaos of the mall across the street, The Boulevard offers a more relaxed shopping experience. For nearly a decade, the mixed-use planned community has enticed shoppers seeking tranquility to stroll its sidewalks. Purveyors of life’s finer things line the wide boulevard. The shelves are well-stocked with pieces to brighten the home and body at Crate & Barrel, Soft Surroundings and Schon. Professional offices offer services for the eyes, hair and teeth. Seasonal displays make the street festive like the community avenues it emulates. After an afternoon of browsing, shoppers can refuel in a restaurant, and some lucky ones can simply take the elevator up to their apartments overlooking the street lamps and strings of lights that make The Boulevard shine.
Fozzie’s Sandwich Emporium >>
Homemade chips, a hot sandwich and a milkshake made with herbs from the garden? Fozzie’s thought you’d be interested. The tiny sandwich emporium serves subs, salads and sweets with thoughtful ingredients you won’t find at the average delivery joint. Looking for a change of pace from the full-service restaurants he’s run in the past, Mark Lucas opened Fozzie’s in 2010. “I liked the location and saw the need for a good sandwich shop in the area,” he says. The creative leeway sandwiches and shakes provide was another motivation. “Dress ‘em up, dress ‘em down, do whatever you want!” he says. Vegetarian options extend beyond the salad side of the menu and include sandwiches with eggplant parm and falafel, as well as black bean and veggie burgers made in-house. Meat-eaters will salivate over the juicy burgers, gyros and deli subs. The chalkboard sign above the counter boasts tempting milkshake flavors that range from Salty Kisses (chocolate kisses, pretzels and caramel) to The Chocolate Juilip (oreos, fresh mint and fudge) to Lucas’ favorite, The Foz-o-licious (goat cheese, caramel and roasted apples). Herbs and vegetables for many dishes grow in the garden beds out back by the patio, where diners can dig into their food on days they just can’t wait for the Fozzie’s delivery car to come to them.

homework]
Dear Homework,
We live on three acres with a pond. We want to update the front of our house, maybe go darker. As you can see, the vinyl siding takes up a lot of the home’s front. We would love to incorporate the look of stone, somehow, and we don’t mind switching out the boring poles. The gray flap hanging down is a sun screen, which we need because our house faces west and gets really hot in the summer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
After
———Ready to Take the Plunge
Dear Ready to take the plunge, Your home has a very romantic setting that you aren’t really taking advantage of, so let’s see what we can do to make the most of it. To start, adding some stone, as you request, will allow us to create a more lodge-like feel appropriate for the lakeside setting. I am showing a significant addition to the left side of the façade, to decrease the typical split-level feel. I also suggest a low, curved stone wall to define an enlarged porch/terrace. This will hide the view of all the patio furniture, creating a better first impression. Stone columns and a half-wall complete the masonry upgrades. A darker siding color further underscores the lodge feel. I would celebrate the lakeside setting with plants that thrive at the water’s edge. A willow tree here and some cattails there soften the man-made look of the lake. Adding a shade tree and some casually trimmed hedges will blur the transition of the architecture to the landscape. Even without the architectural changes, your home would be remarkably transformed by the landscape additions alone. Your house really could feel like a resort, so best of luck with the makeover.
