[ letter from the editor ] Today’s beauty section has a list of suggested at-home indulgences. When I think of at-home indulgences, chocolate and ice-cream are usually involved. And changing into stretch pants (or as lullulemon calls them, technical athletic clothes). But in this case, it’s about home pampering products, things like hair masques and mini-facials. It’s a great suggestion, and as our columnist points out, if ever Midwesterners need a little pick me up, it’s in early March. But something besides dreary weather has brought many of us down. For whoever has experienced ‘the stomach virus’ that’s been going around, pampering means a glass of ginger ale and an already-raised toilet seat. As a recent survivor, I just want to reassure my fellow sufferers: It does get better—albeit very, very gradually. You do not need to call the doctor on day four, only to hear: hydrate and rest. Easier said than done, since even tap water seems about as appealing as borscht. Just stock up on Perrier and avoid food commercials. On the plus side, you will lose weight and gain appreciation for everyone who has ever suffered through more perilous diseases (and their treatments). In the realm of ‘weight loss due to illness,’ this flu/virus is probably the best option. You come to the realization very quickly that nothing makes you appreciate good health like not having it.

Where’s the party? is the rallying cry of revelers everywhere. You hear it a lot in St. Louis, a fun-loving town with more than its fair share of bashes and blowouts. But if you’re looking for an exceptionally good time, you won’t want to miss COCAcabana 2013. The annual event, COCA’s signature fundraiser, is always one of the most talked-about nights of the year, and this year’s gala, After Dark, promises to be full of unexpected delights. “When the lights go down, the arts come alive!” says COCA executive director Kelly Pollock. “As an arts organization, we’re uniquely qualified to deliver a great party, and we’re pouring every ounce of our ingenuity into this one. It’s COCA’s 25th anniversary, so we’re pulling out all the stops.” The event, April 26 at COCA’s University City campus, includes cocktails, a live auction, a seated dinner, and a dash of stardust provided by Billy Bush of Access Hollywood, who will be on hand to mingle and share celebrity dish. “It’s going to be a blast, but we’re partying for an important cause: to make arts education available to everyone,” Pollock says. COCA serves more than 50,000 St. Louisans annually. Funds raised at COCAcabana help support an array of multidisciplinary arts programs, including classes and workshops in dance, music, drama and visual arts. COCA’s award-winning outreach program, Urban Arts, provides free arts education and scholarships to low-income students throughout St. Louis. “The arts belong to everyone, not just those who aspire to be artists and entertainers,” Pollock says. “COCA makes them accessible to St. Louisans of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Arts education helps young people develop
confidence, discipline, communication skills and problem-solving ability, serving as a lifeline and, often, a path Jefferson Elementary School students with artwork created during a COCA arts residency into college. Creativity photo courtesy of coca also provides the ultimate competitive edge in business and science, she adds. “Arts education inspires people of all ages to tap into hidden reserves of passion, initiative and leadership.” This year’s COCAcabana is co-chaired by Lindsay and Scott Bush, Mary and Bob Ciapciak, Hazel and Arnold Donald, and Stephanie and Mark Schnuck. Honorary chair is Nathalie Means, principal of Jefferson Elementary School, where COCA has provided arts programs for more than 15 years. Presenting sponsor is Anheuser-Busch; Lincoln serves as live auction sponsor; Town & Style is media partner. Costumes are optional, but creativity is encouraged. “Add a pop of color to your basic black!” Pollock says. A record-breaking 700 guests attended last year’s COCAcabana, raising more than $650,000 for COCA’s educational programs. This year’s goal is $700,000. “For 25 years, COCA has valued the power of the arts to transform lives,” Pollock says. “We want to keep having a positive impact on our schools, businesses and neighborhoods, but we can’t do it without help from the entire community. COCAcabana is crucial to our mission, and we hope St. Louisans will join us for an unforgettable party. Everyone knows that After Dark is when the fun starts.”

Chickens cluck, squawk and lay eggs. This I know as a South St. Louis resident, where occasionally I see and hear the hens my neighbors keep across the alley. They make it feel downright homey around here. Watching them strut around with such oblivious self-importance is amusing. They don’t bark incessantly all night at nothing, like dogs do. They won’t bite the mailman. Still, some people think our feathered friends are unsanitary, or just too weird, for their municipality. At any rate, Brentwood may be the next domino to fall in favor of changing the city code to officially permit residents to keep chickens. Now, goats might be a different story; has anyone else seen that viral video of bleating goats that sound like yelling humans? Counterfeit cash was passed at a Chesterfield gas station recently, four homemade $10 bills. If you’re already going to the trouble of making fake funds, a federal offense, why not go bigger—denominations of $20, $50 or $100? Because crooks with some success in their lives of crime know that many retail establishments have special markers to help clerks determine immediately whether bigger bills are bogus. Anyhow, cops say the manager discovered the monkey money the following day, and nobody knows whether the person who paid for drinks and snacks with it knew it wasn’t legit. (Some counterfeiters are such knuckleheads: In November, a Rhode Island man tried to pay at Target with $100 bills that featured Abe Lincoln’s face, not Ben Franklin’s. Even journalists with nary two nickels to rub together know that Lincoln’s face is on the lowly $5 bill!) Bright blue with orange flowers, MoDOT’s ‘Adopt-a-Highway’ signs credit various organizations for picking up litter. Two have laid claim to the distinction of tidying up Olive Boulevard for short stretches between Interstates 270 and 170. For following in the footsteps of those intrepid Americans who for five decades have answered the claxon call to ‘Keep America Beautiful,’ we tip

our hats. A little. If rescuing people from burning buildings is Most Heroic, picking up litter should at least be Most Undervalued. After all, public service is public service. Missouri-American Water Co. picks up along a section in Creve Coeur. The other organization with signs straddling the Creve Coeur-Olivette border for its half-mile highway stretch: ‘The St. Louis 9/11 Questions Meetup Group’. We’d heard that the conspiracy theorists would have signs up after the first of the year, but still rubbed our eyes upon seeing them. When it comes to stuff like this, we must admit to being ‘truthers’ ourselves. The 9/11 questioners don’t believe media accounts of what happened on Sept. 11, 2001. They certainly don’t trust government explanations. Even physics shows otherwise, they exclaim! At any rate, these folks are officially on the map, but a blanket of snow prevented inspection of their litter-collecting prowess. Elliott Notrica, perhaps the area’s shortest chef despite his tall white hat, explained to the 1,200-plus soup and dessert samplers at Manor Grove’s ‘Soup’s On!’ contest what’s essential to a superior soup: Be careful with consistency. Don’t overcook the meat. Famous chef Manfred Zettl—addressed as such for his savory onion soup served at the late, lamented Famous-Barr restaurant—nodded in agreement, beaming at the little fellow holding the microphone. Elliott is 9. He was introduced to cooking at a North Carolina restaurant and has taken courses at Clayton’s Kitchen Conservatory and Dierbergs in Des Peres. Zettl has judged for Soup’s On! all six years. Elliott, just as passionate and perhaps more articulate than at least a chef or two, was invited to sit on the dais next year when a new round of soups will be judged. Chef Elliott was only one of many surprises at the event, Manor Grove’s way of giving back to the greater Kirkwood community. The venue was changed to STLCC-Meramec for more space and faster service. Participating restaurants had swelled to 26 offering soup and six serving desserts. Former radio personality (last time he was fired he retired) and emcee ‘SMASH’ kept things lively with his gravelly chit chat, bringing out the best in the judges. These included State Rep. Jeanne Kirkton, Mayor Art McDonnell, KTVI meteorologist Angela Hutti, Sauce publisher Allyson Mace, ‘Donnybrook’er Alvin Reid…and yours truly. (Other than two surprisingly insipid bisques, IMHO, all soups were slurp-worthy. And the desserts? OMG!) Official results: People’s Choice first place: Canyon Café, Poblano Chicken Chowder. Second place: South Tech
Culinary Arts, BBQ Beef Brisket. Third place: La Chef Catering, Asian Chicken Noodle Judges’ Choice first place: Cielo at Four Seasons, Smoked Gouda and Mushroom. Second place: South Tech Culinary Arts, BBQ Brisket. Third place: Canyon Café, Poblano Chicken Chowder. Schnucks’ carrot cake took the prize for dessert from both judges and the public. If a bill currently under consideration in Jeff City is passed, the state will mandate that school districts get tougher on bullying. The bill was introduced by Rep. Sue Allen, R-Town & Country, after Ladue district parent Ruth Ahlemeier was disgusted and alarmed by her daughter’s inclusion on the list circulated by male students that rates females for attractiveness, hygiene and alleged promiscuity. A sordid ‘tradition,’ the list has been circulated by senior boys for years without fear of reprisal. Ahlemeier, frustrated by the district’s alleged thumb-twiddling, testified in favor of the bill, which would establish clear procedures for responding to a bullying complaint. Meanwhile, a federal civil rights investigation delves into the same issue. Young people need more courageous advocates like Ahlemeier. Since bullies are basically cowards turned inside out, fear of discovery and punishment may be a good deterrent. Fairfax House, c. 1840, had already had a partial facelift before it was moved a few hundred feet last year to accommodate a new U-Gas convenience store at McKnight and Manchester roads. But for a while after being repositioned, it still needed a backside lift. Et voilà! It’s much more appealing with no more a-peeling: The rear of the antebellum home is now also sided in a bright blue hue. (Seventeen layers of paint were removed during the interior restoration, in 2008.) Rock Hill, owner of the historic structure, had made the home’s preservation a condition of the U-Gas deal; the company paid for the move. One option for the building’s future is to house a museum of local history. Meanwhile, its former neighbor, the Rock

Most people who know Mark Wrighton only as chancellor of W.U. probably can’t imagine him as Bill Nye, the Science Guy. Wrighton out-Nyed Nye recently during the grand opening of the MySci Resource Center, 6601 Vernon Ave. in U. City. He is, after all, a chemistry professor by trade. He conducted several experiments for an audience of local students. His demonstration of the chill factor induced by liquid nitrogen hardened a section of surgical tubing; the bouquet he subjected to the frigid stuff turned flowers into confetti that he threw into the air. Refurbished in part with a $2.2 million Monsanto Fund grant, the MySci Resource Center was designed to be the nerve center of the Institute for School Partnership, the university’s effort to energize the region’s K through 12 community. Some residents of Wildwood have petitioned the city to change the name of Old Slave Road, a lane that has been so named for more than 150 years. In the early 19th century, slaves worked the land of a plantation here, and a slave cemetery is nearby—attesting to the area’s historical significance. One suggestion is to rename it after Elijah Madison, a black soldier who lived and died in the area after serving in the Civil War. Alas very few people know who Elijah Madison was. Petitioners, feel the present name could deter black families from visiting or thinking of relocating to the city, and they seek to remedy that situation. Wildwood officials were set to consider the petition sometime this month.

Hill (Presbyterian) Church, is being rebuilt stone by stone at a Foristell winery. An events venue, it could be complete in time for June weddings. If you think the gun-control debate is already pushing the sensibility envelope, a Missouri state rep has proposed legislation to make our legislature seem positively insane. Mike Leara, a Republican whose district includes Sunset Hills, would have it be illegal to attempt introducing any law that would put further restrictions on gun ownership. Put simply, Leara’s law would make such laws against the law. Really? Leara has tried to clarify his intent by stating he has no illusions his bill has a chance of passage. Rather, he believes the measure demonstrates that the Missouri House of Representatives stands by the Constitutional right of Missourians to keep and bear arms. Let’s see how this works out for him. We wonder how many of our tax dollars get burned up through such silliness.

A glimpse at what St. Louisans are accomplishing here and around the globe.
The Clayton mayoral debate, originally scheduled for March 19, has been switched to 7 p.m. March 14 at Clayton High School auditorium. The event is open to the public, but reservations are required at 314.726.3033.
Guests at Cannon Design’s upcoming Exhibit A: Art By Architects, a benefit auction for St. Patrick Center, will find the event venue as intriguing as the artwork up for auction. The historic Power House, originally built in 1928 and now home to Cannon’s regional offices, had been vacant for 30 years when the firm bought it in 2007. “We completely restored and renovated the place,” says Cannon principal Michael Felton, who co-chairs the April 18 event with Jim Kavanaugh, CEO of World Wide Technology and St. Patrick Center board president. The former courthouse and municipal power plant has won more than 15 national design awards and has been granted LEED Gold status.

Proud parents are Ken and Maxine Goldstein of University City. According to Maxine, “Neither Ken nor I have any musical talent, so our sole contribution was driving Melanie and her sister Andrea to music lessons.”
United Hebrew Congregation in Chesterfield recently received certification from Green Faith, an organization that mobilizes people of diverse religious backgrounds for environmental leadership. The Central Library’s recent $70 million restoration is receiving international attention. The downtown landmark, renovated by Cannon Design architects and BSI Constructors, has been named one of five finalists for Architizer’s A+ Library Award, competing with libraries in Chicago, Arizona and Germany. The architecture news website is opening up the final round of voting to the public until March 8. Cast your vote at architizer.com (click on ‘A+ Vote’).

“ knocked (or thrown) for a loop ”
Investigating the origins of things we say to each other in everyday conversation really knocks us for a loop, a phrase that started showing up in the U.S. in the 1920s. It originally had a literal meaning: “A dog attacked the brute and was knocked for a loop of 50 feet for her efforts,” reported New Castle News in 1921. But language is a living thing, and just a year later, in The Last Mile by Frank McAlister, the phrase had taken on a different connotation: “Cut the bread, and I’ll make you some bacon sandwiches that will knock you for a loop.” At this point, it had come to mean something that surprises and astonishes. ‘Thrown for a loop’ doesn’t appear until the 1950s and ’60s, as in this quote from Time magazine, 1965: “The dust’s effect on the sensor...really threw us for a loop.” By then, it meant to disorient or unsettle someone by doing something unexpected or confusing...and that’s the meaning it has today.

Rita Mahn did not intend to go into finance. When she went to her first class at Webster University, she just wanted a better idea of how the market worked. “I was an investor, but I wasn’t sure I understood everything,” she says. “I did it to help myself. I had two small children and wanted to learn more about fixed income and neutral funds. I was not an individual whose family discussed portfolios around the kitchen table. After those classes, investing made much more sense to me, and it was something I really enjoyed.” Twenty years later, Mahn is now first vice president-branch manager for Wells Fargo in Festus. A position as a sales assistant with an independent broker dealer in 1993 launched her career; she couldn’t stop asking questions. “I found it fascinating. I think that’s the reason I moved on from being a sales assistant. I always wanted to learn more,” she says. That hunger for knowledge has propelled her career ever since. After becoming a financial adviser for A.G. Edwards, Mahn furthered her credentials to become a certified financial planner practitioner when the market peaked in 2000. “Challenging markets are when our clients need us most,” she says. “I took the exam to better supply my clients with the most up-to-date information and build new business.” Mahn became a part of Wells Fargo after it acquired A.G. Edwards in 2008. National mergers can be an uncertain time for employees of both companies, but Mahn says she looked forward to joining such a strong brand. “Patience is a virtue. By staying the course, things worked out very well for those of us who remained in
place after Wells Fargo acquired A.G. Edwards,” she says. Today she runs the Wells Fargo Advisors in Festus as one of the first female branch managers in the St. rita mahn Louis region. She regularly attends an photo by bill barrett annual Wells Fargo women’s conference to share knowledge with other women in the financial industry. “It’s a unique time for us to gather with our peers and talk about how we are building the business,” she says. “I think men historically have dominated our industry, but I see that changing every year. Some clients choose to do business with women.” It’s those client connections Mahn treasures most. “Sitting down with one family at a time to learn about their needs and goals and what’s important to them builds wonderful relationships,” she says. “It’s a privilege to be invited to family celebrations, support them in sad times and assist the transition of wealth to the next generation.” The conversations around Mahn’s kitchen table still revolve around the day’s events, funny stories and family moments. But now, she and her 12-year-old discuss his stock portfolio. “We’ll talk about how certain industries are doing,” she says. “He loves it!”
The Wells Fargo Advisors Festus branch will host an investors symposium Oct. 26. The branch is located at 1311 Veterans Blvd. For more information, call 636.931.1900 or email wellsfargoadvisors.com/rita.mahn. Cover design by sarah gibson | Cover photo by bill barrett

A Bientot| Anyone who’s stepped inside Provence Boutique has been charmed by its Quimper pottery, Provençal linens and Pre de Provence soaps. The Francophile shop has been in the Ladue Marketplace for more than 25 years, and now owner Kris Evans is due for a well-earned retirement. She is hoping to find a buyer who is as enamored of all things français as she is to continue the unique boutique. Bonne chance, madame! Whole Foods No. 3| Look for a new grocery to open in 2015 in the yet-to-be-built City Walk apartment building at 100 N. Euclid Ave. The 38,000-square- foot store will occupy the entire ground floor of the new structure, creating 150 jobs in the process. Mills Properties is developing the apartment structure, with the help of $10 million in TIF funds approved by the St. Louis board of aldermen last October. Home Depot, Move Over| Habitat for Humanity is opening a ReStore hardware store in Des Peres, at 2117 Sams Drive. Offering building supplies, remodeling materials and home decor merchandise, ReStore reduces waste and increases access by offering low-cost materials. In 2012, the first area ReStore, at 3763 Forest Park Ave., diverted more than 93,000 pounds in doors, lumber, tile, flooring, electrical, plumbing and roofing supplies, and other hard goods from landfills to be used in local projects. The materials are both new and repurposed, most given in donation to Habitat for Humanity, which provides safe, decent and affordable housing to needy St. Louisans. Homeowners and businesses who want to donate materials can take advantage of a Deconstruction Service, in which Habitat staff and volunteers come out to dismantle materials for resale at the stores. The stores are open Wednesday through Sunday. Cutting A Fine Figure| The area’s Cutco store, at 11641 Olive Blvd., in Creve Coeur, reports “very good figures” for its first year in business. As anyone who has sat through Cutco presentations by their friends’ college-aged kids knows, these knives can, indeed, cut through just about anything. And the lifetime guarantee is pretty nice, too (as is the free sharpening service). The company decided to locate one of its first four brick-and-mortar stores here because St. Louisans traditionally have been big fans of the upscale cutlery, which starts at about $55 for a paring knife. That, and the number of top salespeople located here, including four or five ‘Hall of Famers,’ those with $1 million or more in sales to their credit.

Coulter Law Firm LLC
He’s a member of the Flotkens Super Market family, he’s head of his own marketing firm, and he just started a company that rents out wheelchair-accessible vans. But his email signature reads ‘Mike Spaceman,’ and his favorite outfit is a light blue jumpsuit emblazoned with NASA mission patches. Mike Flotken has been obsessed with outer space since he was a kid. “Being from St. Louis, how could you not be?” says the head of Total Marketing Solutions and CEO of Mobility for U. “The Mercury and Gemini space capsules were made right here by McDonnell-Douglas— well, McDonnell Aircraft in those days.” Flotken is still awestruck when he recalls astronaut Alan Shephard’s 1961 ride in space, Neil Armstrong’s 1969 moon walk, and the perilous 1970 journey of Apollo 13. “Both the astronauts and the crew were such heroes,” he says. “Shephard was basically riding a huge stick of dynamite into the unknown.”
At 62, the Ladue resident hasn’t lost any of his boyish enthusiasm, despite a recent bout with prostate cancer. His wife of 32 years, Wendy, themed his 59th birthday party A Mission to Mars, renting out the Challenger Learning Center in Ferguson for the occasion. And, while most stressed-out businessmen daydream about vacations in St. Bart’s, Flotken prefers Huntsville, Ala., home of Space Camp. The weekend education program, run by the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, includes an interactive mission on a full-scale mockup of the space shuttle. Flotken is perturbed by the dismantling of the U.S. space shuttle program. “It’s wrong,” he says bluntly. “So much of the technology we take for granted today came from the aerospace industry. Human beings were meant to explore. What happened to the sense of adventure that made this country great? Lewis and Clark didn’t stop halfway. Neither should we.”

Young Teresa Knight, who grew up on a ranch in northern California, used to lie out in the fields and watch crop-dusting planes fly overhead. “When the pilot finished, he’d do a few loop-the-loops and other stunts,” Knight recalls. “It was like my own private air show. He seemed so free!” Her first ambition was to join the Air Force and fly jets. “They told me, ‘You can’t fly jets if you’re a girl.’ There was a flying program at University of California Berkeley, where I got my undergrad degree, but I couldn’t afford it.” She became an obstetrician/gynecologist instead. Today, she serves as director of Women’s Health Specialists in Creve Coeur, trains medical practitioners in Tanzania as a volunteer for UNITE The World with Africa, and lectures worldwide on maternal and child health. But she never abandoned her dream of flying. She now owns her own plane, a TBM single prop that runs on jet fuel. She’s has had a few close calls along the way. “The first time I flew without my 200
pound instructor, the Cessna was so light I went up really fast,” she says. “I started to panic, then I realized, I can and I will land this thing, and it’s going to be fine. In moments of terror in the operating room, I tell myself the same thing.” A few years later, returning from the Cayman Islands, she thought she had permission to fly across Cuba. But when she notified officials she was approaching Cuban airspace, she was denied access. Her only option was to fly around Cuba to Key West. “I radioed the air traffic controller in Key West, fearing I wouldn’t have enough fuel to get there,” she recalls. His reply—“Oh mon, that’s total badness!”— wasn’t exactly reassuring. But Knight landed safely. Now she’s saving up for a Cessna 152 aerobatic airplane. “I want to be the pilot doing those loop-the-loops in the sky,” she says. “Maybe I’ll inspire some little girl who’s sprawled in the grass somewhere, dreaming of flying free.”

Michael A. Kahn attorney \\ author There are times when wives will say almost anything to shut their husbands up. “My wife, Margi Lenga, got tired of hearing me rant about how I could write a better book than the one I was reading,” recalls attorney Michael A. Kahn, a principal at The BrickHouse Law Group. “So she challenged me to do it.” He did it, all right: his first book was a legal thriller published in 1988 as The Canaan Legacy and re-released in 1992 as Grave Designs; the eighth novel in his Rachel Gold mystery series, The Flinch Factor, comes out in June. When asked how he finds time to write, be a full-time attorney, and teach a law class at Washington University, he answers, “I write an hour or two every night, when other people are watching TV. If you can write a page a day, you can write a book a year.” Kahn grew up in University City and met Margi at U. City High. He always loved to read: “My dad, William Kahn, would take me to the library at least once a week when I was a kid.” He majored in English at Amherst College and, after earning a master’s degree at Northwestern University in Chicago, he taught elementary school for a while. “But I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, so, like Rachel Gold, I ended up at Harvard University, where I studied law.” Also like Gold, he practiced at a major law firm in Chicago, got fed up with it and returned to St. Louis. “I always wanted to help run a smaller, more personal firm like BrickHouse.” Kahn and Margi, who teaches at Kitchen Conservatory and writes a food column for The Jewish Light, live in Olivette. They have five grown children and four grandchildren. At first, writing was simply an enjoyable hobby. “But a few years ago as I was working on a book, I said to Margi about one of my characters, ‘You won’t believe what Benny just did!’ That’s when I knew I was really a writer.”

I wonder how most parents feel about allowing their children to make mistakes—perhaps suffer, or even fail? I’m guessing they wouldn’t like it, since parents today seem awfully busy rescuing, fixing and micromanaging their children’s lives. But is that really good for their kids? A University of Kansas study found that a college freshman’s level hope was a better predictor of first semester grades than SAT scores or IQ, and a University of Pennsylvania study found that their scores on an optimism test were a better predictor of a college freshman’s grades than SAT scores or high school grades. Angela Duckworth of the University of Pennsylvania found that a person’s level of grit was the best predictor of success at West Point Academy and in college freshmen. She describes grit as the combination of passion for a single mission and an unswerving dedication to achieve that mission. So how does one come by hope, optimism and grit? I believe these are learned. Kids need to be allowed to go through the process of trying a task, getting frustrated, and failing. Afterward, when they try again and succeed, they’ll be able to say, I did it!—and that experience provides them with a ‘self-efficacy account.’ They learn to initiate, stay determined to overcome obstacles and challenges, and to persevere. Kids need to have opportunities to think for themselves, solve their own problems and be self-motivated. They need to delay gratification and work for the things they want. They need to earn their phones, cars and privilege through repeated responsible behavior, a good track record and sweat equity. That is how children become capable adults. Author Ken Robinson said, “If you are not prepared to be wrong and to make mistakes, you will never create anything original.” That means parents and teachers need to create environments where kids feel comfortable stretching themselves, taking risks, and learning from mistakes. I also think it’s not a bad thing for kids to experience some hardships, some pain, and be a little hungry. It allows them to overcome challenges and prove to themselves that they can do it. This self-efficacy provides the anchor for hope and optimism. Finally, young people need times of trial and error, where they can take chances without a safety net. This is when people are most alive and most engaged. It’s when they feel the greatest ownership and the most fulfilled. Grit, hope and optimism: three important predictors of success in life. Are you providing your children the opportunities to earn them? There are many special moments in a high school girl’s life, but prom has to be at the top of the list. Q | I need help with my hair and makeup for prom. Should I go to a salon? Sounds expensive…
—Sarah from Villa Duchesne
A | Sure, salons are great but can book up quickly. Another fun idea is to get ready with your girlfriends. You can all help each other: some girls can be dedicated to hair styling, while others can be in charge of makeup and nails. Or have some siblings and friends who don’t have prom that night come over and help you get ready.
Q | I am wearing a strapless dress and am not sure about jewelry. My mom says a necklace and big earrings are too much. How much is too much? —Madeline, Nerinx Hall A | Sorry, but your mom is right. The general rule is if you want to do large earrings, keep it simple and wear no necklace. Or you could do something really tiny and delicate. But the general rule is to pick one or the other…and definitely no matching sets, please! Got questions about prom or any other fashion-related dilemmas? Email me at suzy@townandstyle.com!

[ Your Wedding Preparing For

improving your smile // “Makeup, especially lipstick, frames the smile,” says Dr. Peter J. Pagano of Artistic Dentistry. “If the smile shows stained, spotted or crooked teeth, it diminishes the overall look, like a beautiful frame around an awful painting.” The first step for the bride-to-be? “Get your teeth cleaned and address any cavities, pronto. A bride with a toothache and swollen jaw does not make for a happy honeymoon.” If red, swollen gums are noticed during the cleaning, a deep scaling may be necessary, Pagano adds. Teeth whitening can be accomplished in a single visit, or at home with specially designed trays and a gel used over a two- to three-week period. “The gel is inserted in the trays, pre-molded ‘casts’ that fit over the patient’s teeth and are worn for one hour,” Pagano explains. Orthodontic problems—like fixing a gap between the two front teeth—take about three to six months to fix with braces or aligners, Pagano says. “But the gap can be closed in two weeks with veneers that cover it.”
Your dress is ordered. The venue and caterer have been selected, and the invitations are ready to be mailed. What’s left? How about you! It’s not too late to start a skin-care regimen, shed some weight, brighten your teeth or have a minor nip ’n tuck.

Want to glow on your wedding day? These minimally invasive skin procedures can help.
>> Paul Hueseman,
>> Dr. Amy Miller,
pharmacist & owner, Greentree Pharmacy A bride-to-be could lose 30 to 35 lbs in three months with the Take Shape for Life program. It uses an updated version of the Medifast diet, coupled with personalized health coaching. I’m a health coach and a mentor with the program. Clients eat five Medifast meals and prepare one lean meal of their own daily. The first week is critical. It usually takes about four to five days to reach the fat-burning phase. During weekly consults, I find out how clients are doing and give them tips on what to snack on and how to order when they eat out. As a pharmacist, I also determine their vitamin needs. People stay with the program full-time until they reach their weight-loss goal. Then I transition them to healthy eating habits where they prepare more meals at home. I teach them about high-glycemic foods, the difference in the types of vegetables and how to select them, and what is considered a healthy plate. My goal is to help them maintain their weight loss.
>> Dr. Richard Moore,
medical director, The LifeStyle Center Shape-shifting procedures include Tickle Lipo and Venus Freeze. Tickle Lipo is a less traumatic form of liposuction that permanently removes fat, but yields smoother results. This is because of the motion of the cannula, a hollow tube that vibrates to break fat, which is later suctioned. It can be used anywhere there is excess fat, except the face. I recommend having it done 60 days before a big event. Venus Freeze offers skin-tightening through magnetic energy and radiofrequency waves that create heat and a thermal reaction in the targeted area. The medical device also kick-starts the production of cells in connective tissue. I recommend six to eight weekly treatments, for optimum results.
St. Louis Skin Solutions It’s never too late to make improvements, but sooner is better when it comes to your face. The skin purges every six weeks, so a prescribed skin-care regimen is good at six weeks, great at 12 weeks and even better at 18 weeks. If possible, meet with a skin-care specialist six months before your wedding. Some skin treatments, like chemical peels, are possible three months before a wedding. I recommend two or three peels, a month apart, with the last one scheduled two weeks before your wedding. A laser peel is a good idea for the older bride or mother of the bride. It addresses age spots, sunspots and facial vascularities—tiny visible veins around the nose and on the cheeks. Schedule this about a month before the wedding, as skin will flake. Fillers also are doable. A tiny bit of filler in the lips makes them more plump and pouty. Dermal fillers injected in the cheek and jawline can ‘lift’ the face. Fillers under the eyes and around the temples can raise the eyebrows a bit.
>> Dr. Eva Hurst,
director, W.U. Center of Dermatologic and Cosmetic Surgery The young bride in her early 20s doesn’t need a lot. She might want microdermabrasion or a light peel to diminish acne scars or brighten her skin. Another treatment option is an intense pulsed-light laser called a FotoFacial, which remove freckles or sunspots. Older brides with sun damage also can benefit from a FotoFacial. However, they may need a series of treatments, spaced one month apart, before their big day. As a woman progresses in age, Botox comes into play. It can temporarily eliminate crow’s feet and frown lines between the eyes and on the forehead. The more mature bride might need dermal fillers to add facial volume to cheek hollows, tear troughs and nasolabial lines. Dermal fillers should be injected four to six weeks before the wedding, as some bruising might occur. Textural or skin resurfacing requires more time as optimum results are achieved at the four- to six-month mark. The same goes for skin-tightening procedures. They also take longer to heal. Don’t do anything new to your face later than three weeks before your wedding.

nail health //
[ cosmetic procedures to consider now ]
“The eyes may be the windows to the soul, but your nails can divulge a lot about your overall health,” says dermatologist Dr. Joseph Muccini of MidAmerica Skin Health & Vitality Center. Brittle nails can be a sign of low iron, anemia, liver problems, autoimmune disease such as lupus, and even cancer, Muccini explains. “If there’s anything wrong with any of these areas, check it out with a physician.” Even nails with no known problems can benefit from the nutritional supplement biotin and B-complex vitamins, Muccini adds. “It’s also important to eat properly. Nails need protein. A lot vegans and vegetarians don’t consume enough, so they should search for a non-animal source.” It takes six months to grow new fingernails and 12 months for toenails. Cosmetic flaws, including agerelated ridges, can be buffed and camouflaged with nail polish. Don’t over-groom cuticles: “The cuticle creates a solid seal over the nail,” Muccini says. “If you cut it, you basically break the seal—and an exposed nail can lead to an unsightly infection.”
The countdown is on: You’re getting married in three months. Do you have time for a cosmetic tweak or two? >> Dr. Judith Gurley,
plastic surgeon Face, breast and body work is possible as late as three months before a special event. However, the goal is to look better, not different. ‘Under-do’ rather than overdo, and don’t try to do too much at once. Minimally invasive procedures for the face include Botox, fillers, small fat injections, some laser procedures and eyelid lifts. Avoid face- and neck-lifts; they carry the risk of nerve injury. A breast augmentation is also possible—if tastefully done with small to moderate implants. Larger implants carry a higher risk of malposition. Keep in mind you cannot vigorously exercise for six weeks after implants are inserted, and don’t forget about dress fittings. Breast reduction is also possible during this timeframe, as long as it is moderate. A larger volume reduction may require longer healing time. Avoid involved procedures, as risks increase with them. Liposuction may be performed to sculpt the figure and remove some of those stubborn fat pockets, but I do not recommend a large-volume procedure.
>> Dr. Mike Nayak,
Nayak Plastic Surgery Almost everything I do can be accomplished within three months, but if I had to recommend procedures before one’s wedding, it would be dermal fillers and rhinoplasty. Dermal filler injected under the eyes makes a huge difference with dark circles and mild to moderate bags. It doesn’t matter if you are 22 or 52 years old, it works and looks great. During consultation, I simulate with my fingers what the patient will look like after the injection. The procedure takes 15 minutes to perform with a topical anesthetic. Some people bruise, and it can last one or two weeks. It can be reversed with an enzyme injection, if the patient so desires. While rhinoplasty—nose reshaping surgery—is more complex and requires more healing time than dermal fillers, it can yield wonderful results. You look good at three to four weeks, but you look great at three months. A lower face-lift also can be done, but book that appointment three to four months in advance of your big day.

[ problem solved! ] Indulgences for Dreary Days by lauren madras | photo by charles barnes
This time of year, the dreary winter weather seems to cling with a special sort of spite. So why not give yourself a pick-me-up and boost your beauty quotient with some at-home indulgences? You’ll pass the time when there’s nothing fun to do outdoors, and it will help you get ready for spring break and the welcome season of weddings, proms and parties.

Oceanwell Smoothing Facial Peeling
Aveda Stress Fix Body Lotion
Darphin VITALSKIN Anti-Fatigue Dynamizing Serum
Original Mineral Mini Minerals
Frutique Mandarin Anti-Puff Eye Roller
Imagine your life as woman of leisure, ending each day with a gentle facial. You can do just that with an easy-to-use facial peel from German cosmetics company OceanBASIS. After removing makeup and cleansing, apply the cream. Rinse it off with warm water. Your skin will be soft and perfectly prepped for absorbing your favorite night cream. For an even more luxe experience, a tip from high-end spas: use infant washcloths to stimulate the skin when removing peel.
Treat your skin right with daily moisture and carve out some ‘me time’ with this body lotion scented with lavender and clary sage. The organic product is perfect for after your shower or bath. Once skin is already softened by the hot water, apply to shoulders, chest, arms and other pressure points. Lavender is said to reduce stress while the sage is thought to help with focus, allowing you to tackle your day with renewed vigor.
Sometimes you just can’t get the six to eight hours doctors recommend, and the first sign of shorter nights will appear in your face, which looks more drained when you don’t have enough restorative sleep. This light-weight serum combats that effect, infusing your skin with a reflective energy. Formulated with extracts of Polynesian noni (a tropical fruit), caffeine and vitamin C, your skin will feel firmer all day long.
The five-pack travel set includes 1.7-ounce servings of nourishing shampoo, conditioner and two masks to repair damaged strands and get glossy locks again. After months of winterized indoor heat, even the best hair needs a boost. Look for the Seven Day Miracle Moisture Masque and The Power Base Protein Masque as full-size products, too, if you need long-term treatment.
On the heels of winter, spring growth stimulates pollen, which may activate your allergies long before the flowers are in bloom. The roller lessens puffiness under the eye by reducing excess fluids. The cool sensation is also an instant energy boost. The compact size and low price will help this product become an addiction for anyone who fights swollen under-eye bags. You can even apply it over your makeup without smearing your concealer.

get the look] [ Megan Fox by lauren madras Sultry Megan Fox earned a bad rap by starring in cheesy films and posing in shades of nothing in men’s magazines. But all that (well, most of it) has changed since the birth of her son, Noah Shannon Green, with actor husband Brian Austin Green last fall. She’s been quoted as saying, “It changes your perspective about being overly sexual in a film when you have a baby” (The Daily Mail, Dec. 2012). She even claims there won’t be any more lingerie or bikini-clad photo shoots. Her red carpet look has calmed down considerably, too, as seen in this chic, modest floral dress. Her clean-and-shiny locks and prim neckline say Fox has turned over a new leaf, but she still exudes plenty of natural beauty and sex appeal.

Pan-Fried Eggplants, Leeks & Carrot, Shrimp, Pan d’Olive Salad
Sam Kacar, the original talent behind Trattoria Branica all those years ago, has returned to his roots with a new restaurant, Pan d’Olive (which translates to ‘olive bread’). The menu is not limited to Italian, but spreads across the Mediterranean spectrum, with things like yogurt-topped eggplant, lamb kofte and phyllo stuffed with feta. This space, previously occupied by the upscale chophouse Mihalis, is very attractive, with private, walled booths, an open staircase and a contemporary vibe. The menu offers a little of everything: small plates, bruschetta, pastas, flatbreads and entrees, which come with a nice side dish or two. A starter of Pan-fried Eggplant ($6) was delicious. A few eggplant rounds, skin-on, were pan-crisped in good-quality olive oil, dabbed with tomato sauce and
topped with yogurt instead of the usual mozzarella. I loved it; it was a lighter, more Eastern Mediterranean touch. We also sampled a cold starter, Leeks & Carrots ($4), an interesting mix of sliced leeks and carrot rounds, softened by cooking and tossed with lemon, sugar and parsley, another Eastern dish reminiscent of Lebanese or Turkish cuisine. I don’t usually pick a salad as a standout dish, but the Pan d’Olive Salad was as beautiful as it was delicious. Light baby greens were tossed with cucumber, kalamata olives, tomato, red onion and feta with the most wonderful olive oil-lemon dressing. Every bite was sheer pleasure. An order of Lamb Shank ($23) was quite good. The generous portion had good flavor and an excellent cooking jus made with port wine and diced
vegetables. My one complaint is that it was not quite cooked to the point of fall-off-the-bone tender—from which this dish benefits greatly. It came with orzo pilaf and a choice of side, which for me was nicely roasted asparagus. The Shrimp entrée ($19) was similarly very flavorful. The handful of jumbo shrimp had great taste and texture and came in a light, buttery tomato sauce flavored with oregano and garlic. The side here was farfalle marinara, also good. Our dessert of Vanilla Crème Brulee ($5) was commendable, light in texture but quite creamy in taste, with the requisite burnt sugar crust. The Tiramisu ($5) was also light, with good hazelnut flavor, and sans the usual liqueur.

art in action Everybody agrees that art is ‘nice,’ but can it really make a difference in the quality of life? The Kresge Foundation thinks so and is putting $100,000 into an effort to identify where and how grassroots collaborations among residents, artists, businesses, urban planners and community leaders can support neighborhood vitality. Spearheaded by the Greater St. Louis Community Foundation, with support from the Regional Arts Commission and the Arts and Education Council, four neighborhoods were selected: the U. City Loop, Old North, Garden/Grove, and Midtown. In the coming months, each will explore ways it can implement the arts for stronger communities. Q. I have been playing serious bridge for four years, yet I seem to be making more mistakes than ever. I get to a certain level and seem to regress. Any ideas why?
A. Someone said, “Bridge is a tough game. The more you know, the harder it is.” Meaning, the more we know, the more there is to think about while playing. You are experiencing the ‘plateau syndrome.’ Since you know more now, you are seeing your mistakes more readily. When you solve these errors, it’s on to the next skill level. Announcement: The North American Bridge Championships will take place March 14 to 24 in St. Louis at the Renaissance Grand Hotel and the Convention Center. Games are available at all levels; emphasis will be on the novice and intermediate games. Visit acbl.org for more information.

There’s one key reason to replace a missing tooth with a dental implant... they prevent the bone loss that triggers a series of unhealthy, age-accelerating events. When a tooth is missing and isn’t replaced, the jawbone supporting that tooth has no purpose and will begin to shrink. What follows is: • the teeth begin to shift; • chewing is shifted to other teeth, causing them to wear faster; • 20% of adjacent teeth will be lost within 4 to 8 years; and • the bone shrinks, leading to a collapsing facial appearance.
Getting a dental implant is a big decision. Implants are the modern solution to tooth replacement and no other option will preserve the jawline and maintain your facial structure. Call us today for a complimentary consultation with Dr. peter pagano.

t isn’t every day you hear people wax poetic about the joys of thimbleberries or micro-lot coffee beans, but that is exactly what happened during a recent weekend in San Francisco. I was there visiting my daughter, Sarah Weiner, founder of the annual Good Food Awards, a celebration of growers and producers of American craft foods. So what are craft foods? They contain natural ingredients and are produced in a sustainable way. But the key component appears to be passion—the passion of the coffee roaster, the beer brewer or the cheese maker. That’s what I learned at the Friday night ceremony, where 114 proud winners (from among 1,400-plus entrants) took the stage to receive their awards from none other than food guru Alice Waters of Chez Panisse fame. She personally placed each beribboned medal around their necks and thanked them for being part of “the delicious revolution.” Standing at a podium made from produce crates filled with pears, Waters praised the organization that gave rise to this ceremony. “I am so impressed with what Sarah (Clayton High School ’98) and her whole group has accomplished. I always treasure the farmer; that’s what is at the core. When I started Chez Panisse (in 1971), I was only interested in making food as good as the food I tasted in France,” she enthused. “It’s all about training your palate.” American food has come a long way since then, and the Good Food people—food activists, sustainable farmers, passionate producers and increasing legions of informed consumers—are clamoring for a return to authentic flavors and a connection with the people who are bringing them to us. That’s what is at the heart of this annual event, and what was apparent as I watched hundreds of guests gather around the honorees as if they were rock stars. National companies like Whole Foods and Williams Sonoma were major sponsors of the event, and reporters from Food & Wine, Better Homes & Gardens, Cooking Light and others were there to cover it. After the awards were given out and the acceptance speeches proffered, lucky attendees were treated to an array of canapés, confections, spirits and more made with the winning foods, things like Borsolino salami from Iowa, plum and vanilla bean preserves from Maryland and pimiento chevre from Alabama. missouri winners As guests sampled the wares (on sustainable bamboo plates) alan mclure & they listened raptly to producer tales of traveling to Pitalito, shawn askinosie Colombia, to purchase 100 bags of red and yellow Caturra coffee beans. And of one company’s salume tradition of searching out family farmers “dedicated to the well-being of their animals and their land.” Apparently, all that comes through in the product: happy cows, pigs, goats and chickens yield happy flavors. Convening in the twinkle-lit Ferry Building overlooking San Francisco Bay, awardees shared their thoughts about their life’s work and what that evening’s recognition meant to them—and to American food production in general. A dairy farmer for 50 years (like his father before him), Bob Giacomini of Point Reyes Farmstead in California explained why his Bay Blue Cheese took a medal. “It starts with the grass and the hills—then our cows and having a herdsman who knows how to handle and care for them. And getting to our plant at 2 a.m. to start making the cheese. We could make the best cheese in the world, but without people like you in this room, we couldn’t get our cheese to the consumer.” To hear them, public awareness seems to be moving in the right direction. “When I started Patric Chocolates in 2006, there were virtually no chocolate makers in the U.S.; now Awards founder there are 50!” beamed Alan McClure, one of the two Missouri Sarah Weiner winners in the chocolate category. “To make a sublime morsel of chocolate for you to taste, the cacao we find is so important. Think Indiana Jones without the whip,” joked McClure, who seeks his beans in Belize, Venezuela and Mexico. There are nine awards categories—pickles, coffee, chocolate, beer, charcuterie, cheese, confections, spirits and preserves—and each has to meet particular entry guidelines. Preserves, for example, must be made with fruit local to that producer (Michigan berries for a Michigan-based jam), and without synthetic inputs like pesticides or GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Charcuterie must be hand-crafted, made with meat raised humanely (access to outdoors, hormone-free, without gestation crates, etc.), and by a business where fair compensation is given to everyone at

Where Sarah suggests eating good food in San Francisco: The Ferry Building on the bay is the site of the Saturday Farmer’s Market, with lots of oysters, local cheeses, fruits and veggies. Also in the Ferry Building; Cowgirl Creamery’s Sidekicks Restaurant for grilled cheese or take-home cheeses; Boulette’s Larder for Sunday brunch; Blue Bottle Coffee, which is all organic and has a cult-like following; The Gardener for beautiful kitchen wares; Heath Ceramics for California-made ceramics and pickling jars On Valencia Street—Craftsman & Wolves pastry shop (especially the hazelnut financier); Dandelion Chocolate, where you can watch the chocolate being made; Four Barrel Coffee, where you can watch the roasting; and Mission Cheese Terroir Wine Bar in SoMa (south of Market) for odd, delicious, natural wines Nopalito in Nopa (north of The Panhandle) for great Mexican food made with local ingredients; don’t miss the michelada, the traditional hot-weather drink that is a cross between Mexican beer and a Bloody Mary Fatted Calf in Hayes Valley for great sandwiches, local meat and house-made terrines Bar Tartine, where hot bread comes out of the oven daily at 4 p.m.

the ranch, in the slaughterhouse and in the kitchen. The Good Food criteria promote respect for each step of the food chain, and judges are experts in their category. The morning after the awards ceremony, a Good Food Marketplace assembled under the Ferry Building arches, where the public—3,000-plus of them—sampled the award-winning wares and talked to the producers. On display were things like coppa and goat salami from Wisconsin and goat milk chai caramels from Vermont. You didn’t need to be a foodie to recognize that something big was happening. “The food industry has broken the food chain, and we’re all here to fix that chain,” commented Matt Eggleston of EcoFriendly Foods in Virginia, a winner in the charcuterie category. “We need these success stories in food to show young farmers that they can make a profound difference. This event inspires us to keep doing the work to reclaim the food system—it’s vital to our communities.”

spares the audience any of the anguish Amour inflicts. The Austrian movie, nominated for five Oscars and named Best Foregin Language Film, is a brutally frank portrayal of an elderly French couple’s slow decline toward death. Retired musicians Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) enjoy a simple life in their Paris apartment until Anne suffers a stroke. The film’s two hours chronicle the gentle care Georges provides his wife and the couple’s increasing isolation from the outside world. The movie’s realism is shocking. Like death after a long period of suffering, the ending provides only unsatisfying relief from the prolonged pain of the experience. Should You See It? Only those brave enough to look death in the face should see this one. —R.K. Viewed at Chase Park Plaza Cinema

of bad guys, lots of guns, lots of explosions. That’s OK; I was ready for old school, shoot-’em-up action. But be careful what you wish for. A Good Day to Die Hard brings tough guy John McClane together with his CIA-agent son (yes, the tired father-son trope), where they proceed to break every pane of glass in Moscow. The inane plot had no substance, and I suspect the script was just 10 pages long with the phrase ‘insert 20-minute car chase/gun battle here’ peppered between the cliched lines. Somewhere between the Humvee causing a 200-car pileup, the helicopter full of uranium smashing into a nuclear plant, and Bruce Willis falling through yet another pile of scaffolding, this die-hard action fan got bored. Should You See It? No, keep your fond memories of McClane’s better days safely preserved. —C.K. Viewed at Wehrenberg Ronnie’s 20 Cine

cover story
Enclave [Bellerive by rebecca koenig
Enclave Bellerive has experienced its own housing boom, reports managing director Chris Vatterott. After a lull in the market, the development at Mason and Ladue roads has constructed four new homes and sold two additional lots since late 2010. That’s a 200-percent increase over the previous three years, Vatterott points out. “We have a great group of Enclave Bellerive owners, and a good part of our success can be credited to the owners’ confidence in our development, the attractive homes they designed and/or built, and the generous nature of the owners, which permitted our rebirth,” he says. The 44-acre, 55-lot gated neighborhood is cared for by a homeowners’ association that prizes the values their neighborhood is based on: traditional homes in an upscale, manicured community. “The architectural guidelines ensure harmony in design and above-average quality,” Vatterott says. While buyers have some leeway in personalizing their homes’ construction, there are guidelines that must be respected. The community has six original home designs to choose from, and a new ‘ranch’ plan, the Sheridan, with 2,800 square feet on the main floor that includes a master and second bedroom, great room, study and kitchen, as well as a lower level with a family room and additional bedroom. A Sheridan display model will be ready for touring in April. “What really makes this house stand out is the semi-private front and rear courtyards,” Vatterott notes.
He calls Enclave Bellerive ideally suited for people with second houses elsewhere. “They can walk away knowing someone is looking after their home while they’re gone,” he explains. “There’s great comfort photo by bill barrett in knowing they’re in a gated community and there are people looking after their property in their absence.” Homeowners recently endorsed a plan to create a small residence at the edge of the development off Mason Road that, pending formal approval, would house a community caretaker to assist residents with problems ranging from stuck garage doors to hard-to-reach light bulb replacements. “This guy or gal will be able to go in there and remedy whatever it is,” Vatterott says. As for a housing revival, Vatterott reports that the cost of lumber, drywall and other building materials has increased in the last 12 months, making a prolonged upward trend likely. He encourages families to buy and build now, while the market is still in their favor. “The lot selection is still very good,” he says, “and you will never be able to build for less than you can right now.”
Enclave Bellerive is located at the intersection of Mason and Ladue Roads in Creve Coeur. For more information, call 314.280.8080 or visit the sales pavilion Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Cover design by jon fogel | Cover photos by bill barrett

If ever there is a time for risk-taking, it’s in the powder room. Powder rooms are screaming for drama and the perfect place to put your personal stamp and showcase your personality with complete abandon. It may seem counterintuitive, but a bold floral or graphic pattern will not overwhelm this small space. Instead, it will envelop and excite you and your guests, like unveiling a gift—and since time spent there is minimal, so exaggeration does not overwhelm. This look can be executed in a number of ways and on any budget. The inspiration photo displays a bold tile pattern, floor to ceiling, but the same look can be achieved with paint, stencils or even upholstered walls and ceilings. Don’t forget the ceilings! Keeping them white just leaves your look unfinished. Strong statements on the walls, though, call for restraint when choosing hand towels, rugs and other necessities. If patterned walls do not appeal to you, a solid bold color or lacquered floor-to-ceiling look can accomplish the same show-stopping effect. You can always add pattern or contrasting color with accessories. In either case, lighting fixtures should be installed with dimmers, and more than one light source is preferred to create depth and dimension.

local roots are deep. Her great-grandparents on both sides hailed from St. Louis, and both parents grew up in Webster Groves. Sarah moved here in the early 1980s, and served as vice president of a family business, Diagraph Corp, for 25 years. “But I’ve always been interested in real estate, and I love building relationships with people,” she says. She earned her license in 2001 and joined Laura McCarthy immediately. She and her husband, Geoffrey, live in University City. She has a married son, Chip Grace, two grandchildren, three step-children and eight step-grandchildren. “I’m cuckoo about all my grandkids!” I knew this was the right career for me about two-and-a-half years in, when I started receiving referrals from past clients. That’s the ultimate compliment. I think we’ve all had at least one deal that’s completely disastrous. When everything seems to be falling apart, I simply focus on the task at hand, tackle inspection and permit issues, and handle each problem as it presents itself. I think I made about $3 on one particularly complicated transaction, but at least we closed! If your house has been on the market awhile and isn’t moving, it’s usually a matter of price, appearance and/or condition. Sometimes you simply need a fresh look and a new set of photos, coupled with a price reduction that’s supported by market facts. I always count my blessings as I’m driving home. To unwind, I love to cook dinner and drink a little wine with my husband. The market isn’t as go-go as it used to be, so I simply try to step it up a notch. I had my best year ever in 2012, so I’m quite thankful. The biggest misconception about real estate agents is that we can earn a living by working part time. If you want to be successful, you have to be available to your clients 24/7. When people who are thinking about getting their license want my advice, I always ask, Are you willing to put in the hours? I tell new agents to choose a company that best fits their personality. Interview with several brokers, spend some time in each office and see if there’s chemistry. To do well in this business, it takes tenacity, good cheer, hard work, staying abreast of the market and developing relationships with other agents. There’s nothing I’d rather do for a living. Every house is different, each client relationship is new. It’s never boring.

2 Bellerive Country Club Grounds - T & C - $2,695,000
This stately Georgian Revival home is, without question, the most beautiful one on the country club
grounds! It has been built to true Georgian Revival architectural design dating back to Colonial times. Poised on over three acres, it looks out onto the 17th fairway and green of the country club. Extraordinary woodwork; heated marble bathroom floors on the second floor; screened garden pavilion designed with the exact footprint measurements of Monticello’s garden pavilion; and finished lower level plus heated threecar garage are among the many attributes.

homework] Dear Homework,
It’s time to re-landscape our rear yard. There is a big effort underway to help improve water quality in Deer Creek and its tributaries by installing features that help capture rain where it falls, instead of allowing water to run off-site. In fact, a limited-time voluntary program called RainScape Rebates may financially assist landowners living in participating municipalities to incorporate rainscaping features into their own property. I encourage your readers to check it out: deercreekalliance.org/rainscaperebates.aspx After

———What to do in Ladue
Dear What to do in Ladue,
First, I would like to divide the space into work zone and play zone and install a Hornbeam or evergreen screen to separate the former (driveway/vegetable garden/ beehive) from the other (ornamental garden/play area). On the garden side, I would remove the concrete pool deck, yet retain the brick terrace. Remove the railroad tie wall and slope the ground using an evergreen ground cover to hold it in place. I suggest intensifying the planting with additional flower beds, serpentine borders and a manicured lawn to tie it all together. I would also upgrade the architecture with new shutters and window boxes, and tidy the downspouts. This now looks like an impressive, unified estate rather than a backyard with a lot of stuff in it. And, it will shed less water. Good luck with your changes. ———Homework HomeWork is penned by Paul Doerner, president, The Lawrence Group. if you would like your home critiqued, contact us at homework@townandstyle.com

Plan Ahead: Small-Space Vegetable Gardening >> Now, while you’re staring at the barren winter earth, is a good time to plan and dream about your spring gardening plans. There’s no better way for beginners to experience the joys of vegetable gardening than by starting small. from Small beginnings
You’ll be surprised how much you can produce with just a few pots of veggies and herbs. To start, focus your energies on three or four items and expand your plot every year. In no time you’ll have a vegetable garden that may yield all the fruits, vegetables and herbs you need.
Raised Beds
Simply put, raised beds make gardening easy. Unlike tilling up the soil in a large patch of land, raised beds rely on soil that you bring in, which greatly decreases the amount of maintenance you’ll end up doing with weeding, fertilizing and amending the soil. For ease, you want to make sure you can reach every point in your raised bed without having to step into it, so I recommend a bed no larger than 4x4 feet, which conveniently grows enough food to feed a family of four.
Containers
Growing food in containers isn’t a new concept, and there are many options for what you can grow. Blueberries, for example,
do well in large pots, and leafy greens can be packed tightly into a container, as well. I recommend planting one pot with several different herbs, another pot that is an assortment of leafy greens and yet another that is purely ornamental, like coleus and old fashioned roses. You can create quite a decorative assortment of pots without ever having to dig up your lawn.
Windowsills
No outdoor space at all? Grow what fits on your kitchen windowsill: herbs. I like the look of a row of pots planted with herbs that grow well indoors, like chives, parsley and mint.
Hanging Baskets
If you have a fire escape, this is a great option. One hanging basket can grow two heads of lettuce, a slew of herbs or virtually any root vegetable. And since it stays outside, it likely gets plenty of sun and rain. Whatever option you may choose, be sure to plant things you want to eat so your fondness for gardening may grow to a larger pot, plot or lot.
