[ letter from the editor ] Much has been made in recent weeks about whether college is right for everyone. The President said it would be a good goal for every American child; Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said it wouldn’t. As luck would have it, the topic is the subject of this issue’s parenting column— what timing. Our parenting expert, Dr. Tim Jordan, points out that most upper middle class parents engage in a certain amount of, uh, ‘pushing’ their kids to succeed. The trick is to identify what ‘succeed’ means. For most parents, he notes, it means the best grades, the most select sports teams and, of course, the most ‘prestigious’ colleges. To what end? So they can get ‘the best’ jobs with ‘the best’ companies in ‘the best’ cities. But, just what is ‘the best’? And is a parent’s idea of best the same as their child’s? Even more important—at what point should offspring be allowed—no, encouraged—to set their own goals for what’s best? We might ask them every single week of high school what they scored on a test or paper, but how often do we ask if they are happy? Dr. Jordan’s point is that we can be so focused on quantifiable goals that we forget to consider the qualitative ones, i.e., our children’s life satisfaction. And isn’t that really what we wish for them?

We’re Sorry | In our Feb. 22 issue in our What’s on the Block about N. Gore Avenue (p.57), we failed to clarify that ‘Webster College’ referred to Webster College for Boys, a long-closed prep school, not the current Webster University. Ladies and gentlemen, start your calculators: Allison Love, math intervention specialist at Sorrento Springs Elementary in the Parkway School District, has found herself in the running for Missouri Teacher of the Year. Love was chosen by her peers. Other teachers at Parkway honored at their grade levels: Stephanie Reinhart, communication arts at Southwest Middle; and Scott Nilsen, social studies at North High. No need to shutter yourselves inside, but you might want to keep an eye on the poodle: Another mountain lion has been spotted within Chesterfield city limits. On two separate nights recently, different residents of a subdivision just off Olive reported sighting a big cat in the woods behind their yards. Earlier this year, a mountain lion was trapped accidentally in Reynolds County; last year, a cat tripped a sensor and was caught on camera near the Missouri River. Conservation Department officials insist that the cats rarely venture near populated areas. That said, members of the state legislature are taking no chances: A proposed bill would make it legal to kill a mountain lion. From the plaza surrounding the Ritz-Carlton to City Hall, Clayton is blessed with fine public sculpture. Over the years, pieces have been installed temporarily in Century Garden, between the ice rink and swimming pool at an entrance to Shaw Park (including a Calder and a Renoir). Thanks to Centene Charitable Foundation, a $400,000 grant will fund a permanent installation by internationally renowned artist James Surls. City officials and area arts organizations worked together to select Surls from four finalists
of the
who presented ideas for Clayton’s centennial in spring 2013. Molecular Bloom with Single Flower, 25 feet tall, will feature a stylized bloom and vase in steel and bronze. Works by Surls are installed in museums from Kansas City and New York to Amsterdam. Five men from Kirkwood and another from Richmond Heights caught in a federal drug sting face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted of dealing drugs. The suspects were charged with dealing crack cocaine in the Meacham Park neighborhood in south Kirkwood. The charges include: conspiracy to distribute in excess of 280 grams of crack cocaine, distribution of crack cocaine, distribution of heroin, possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking crimes and maintaining a drug-involved premises. Indictments were unsealed Feb. 24 following the group’s arrest. Police from Kirkwood and St. Louis assisted the federal Drug Enforcement Agency with the investigation. Kadir Nelson, a children’s author and artist who won the 2012 Coretta Scott King Book Award for Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African-Americans, will speak at St. Louis County Library Headquarters at 7 p.m. March 16. His work has appeared in national and international publications, art galleries and museums. Nelson has contributed to several New York Times best-selling picture books, including his debut, We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball. The program is free, but seating is limited. Doors open at 6 p.m. Nelson’s books will be available for purchase. Smile, you could be on candid camera. Maplewood’s $125,000 surveillance system recently became
operational, and cops have access to real-time images from their desks or smartphones. While some residents think it’s gratuitous snooping, cops say the cameras installed to keep an eye on traffic, pedestrians and in two city parks are for public safety. If you’re minding your own business, then of course there’s nothing to worry about. But how would naysayers react were one of the cameras to help authorities identify a predator? Would-be scofflaws may feel more justified about ignoring tickets they receive for alleged violations caught on camera at traffic signals in St. Louis. A circuit court judge has reaffirmed his decision that the ordinance is unconstitutional because it allows no recourse for recipients to contest violations. Also, it’s not clear whether the ticket is for the vehicle, not the driver. Suppose the plates were stolen, or Aunt Mary borrowed the car. The city plans to appeal. What especially irritates ticket recipients, including yours truly, is that the city has contracted with an Arizona company, American Traffic Solutions, to operate the 50-odd cameras and produce the tickets! Family and friends of Ciby Kimbrough, Ph.D., celebrated her life with a candlelight vigil last month near the site of the hit-and-run accident Jan. 26 in Town & Country that killed her. Kimbrough, 70, was an educator who had been active during the Civil Rights movement, having marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during demonstrations in Alabama. Police say George Putney, 52, of St. Louis tried to drive away from the accident scene, then fled on foot when his car stalled. Putney turned himself in to Town & Country police a few days later and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a felony and

police continue seeking the public’s help to determine where he was before the crash. Should an $80 million mixed-use project adjacent to the Loop be completed between Eastgate and Westgate here in a year or two, some might call this town ‘Washington U. City.’ University officials have unveiled a plan that features four new buildings for some 200 upperclassmen and street-level retail. The plan involves razing several buildings along Enright Avenue, but is not expected to affect stores or restaurants in operation. Washington U. owns the land, a sliver of which is in St. Louis. Studies have shown the area could support as much as 155,000 new square feet of mixed-use retail. About 20,000 square feet in the proposed development would allow for smallish boutiques, as well as one larger retailer, perhaps one that doesn’t already have a St. Louis-area presence. IKEA, anyone? Melody, solo, melody, solo, solo, solo—now, give the drummer some! Webster Groves High School features one of the area’s most aggressive jazz programs, under the direction of Kevin Cole, jamming with locals as well as giants of the genre in New York. The players at Webster University aren’t slouches, either. Two venues in town are hotspots: Robbie’s House of Jazz on Allen Avenue, and Highway 61 Roadhouse on Old Orchard Avenue. Up for two jams a week? Try Robbie’s on Tuesday nights and the Roadhouse on Thursdays… and hold onto your hat.

Plenty of local events are red-hot, but nothing heats up a party like a touch of Hollywood glamour. “Well, the hottest party of the year just got hotter,” says COCA executive director Kelly Pollock. “COCAcabana 2012 is going to be white-hot, and believe me, it’s more than a theme!” The soiree, April 27 at COCA, includes cocktails and appetizers from St. Louis’ top chefs, live and silent auctions, dinner, dancing and music. In past years, COCA sometimes has brought in a celebrity guest to add a little stardust to the night. “But this year we have three special guests at the same time, all from Hollywood via St. Louis,” Pollock says. Mixing and mingling with partygoers will be Ellie Kemper of The Office and Bridesmaids; Scott Foley of Felicity, The Unit and Grey’s Anatomy; and Sarah Clarke of 24 and the Twilight series. “Sarah attributes her interest in acting to classes she took at COCA years ago, so this is a special homecoming for her,” Pollock says. The actors aren’t paid for their time, she adds. “They’re coming because they want to help us raise funds for COCA.” Support for the arts tends to falter during tough economic times, perhaps because people don’t think they’re necessary. “But U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently called arts education the best way to drive the economy and foster future innovation in business and science,” Pollock says. “He’s right. The arts help young people develop confidence, discipline, problem-solving abilities, and social and communication skills. They’re also a lifeline for economically disadvantaged kids who have no other options.” COCA (Center of Creative Arts), established in 1986, serves more than 50,000 St. Louisans annually with classes and workshops in dance, music, drama and visual arts. Offerings also include a family theater series, arts camps, and artists’ residencies and exhibits. COCA also provides free arts education and scholarships to more than 3,000 low-income students in area public schools. COCAcabana is the organization’s signature event and only fundraiser. This year’s gala is co-chaired by Barbara and Steve Archer, Molly and Chris Danforth, and Rachel and Jack Oliver. Guy Phillips of Y98 is auctioneer. Anheuser-Busch serves as presenting sponsor. ‘Patron’ and ‘Host’ ticketholders are eligible to win a ‘white-hot’ diamond pendent from the Ivanka Trump Collection, valued at more than $7,000 and donated by Elleard Heffern Fine Jewelers. Costumes are optional, but guests are encouraged to dress according to theme. “Last year we raised a record-breaking $600,000-plus; this year, we hope to do even better,” Pollock says. “The arts belong to everyone, and COCA makes them accessible to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.” Many COCA students go on to become first-generation college graduates in a variety of disciplines, not just the arts, she adds. “We want to continue enriching lives despite difficult economic times. We can’t do it without COCAcabana.”

At 87, it’s uncertain how many more trips Holbrook will make back to Missouri. I am reading Holbrook’s memoir, Harold: The Boy Who Became Mark Twain, and was surprised to learn the actor spent much of his youth in the town where I was born, Lakewood, Ohio. I’ll be hosting Holbrook for a KMOX interview and book signing 6 p.m. March 14 at the Chase Park Plaza (open to all). ]

It happened last month when Meds and Food For Kids—a nonprofit feeding the poor in Haiti—hosted a soiree at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. [ This week marks 208 years since St. Louis joined the United States. Originally, St. Louis was in Spanish territory until 1800, when it was ceded to France. But French forces never took control of the area, and it remained under Spanish governance until Napoleon sold it to the United States in 1803. On March 9, 1804, the Spanish flag was lowered, the French tri-color was flown to please the French locals, and then the Stars and Stripes was raised—it was the day one city lived under the flags of three countries! ]

Some people say life is full of second chances. Maybe so, but not when it comes to wealth management. “A family may have only one chance with each major financial decision they make, or fail to make,” says managing partner Joan Malloy of Greenway Family Office. “Unfortunately, statistics show most wealthy families fail to meet their long-term goals regarding the transition of wealth to future generations or building a philanthropic legacy.” We’ve all heard stories about great family fortunes destroyed by bankruptcy or bled dry by foolish investments, poor planning or wayward trust-funders who blow generations of hard-earned wealth without a second thought. “What every family should ask is, How can I keep it from happening to us?” Malloy says. The team at Greenway Family Office, a firm that provides comprehensive financial advice and management services, encourages clients to approach their family wealth just as they would any operating business. “In wealth management, as in business, the odds of failure increase dramatically if you don’t pay vigilant attention and invest wisely,” says partner Chris Thompson. “At Greenway, we consider our clients as chairman/CEO of ‘the business of the family.’ They’re in control, but gladly delegate day-to-day responsibilities to an experienced team that’s always on the lookout for their best interests.” The firm addresses each family’s unique needs by offering a range of ‘C-Suite’ services, acting as chief operating officer, chief investment officer, chief information officer and chief financial officer, as the client sees fit. “In our role as COO, we coordinate the family’s financial and personal affairs, synchronizing all service providers and coordinating efficient, integrated tax, investment, estate and insurance planning,” Malloy explains. “As chief investment officer, we protect and grow the family’s money, examining multiple options and products and investing in best-of-class, costeffective ideas. Each family’s definition of success is different. So we create a customized plan to address their personal goals and challenges,” she says. Poor or ineffective communication is a main source of problems with busy families, Malloy continues. “So, as chief information officer, we’re the central repository for all data and documents, constantly monitoring and proactively addressing risks and opportunities,” she says. And, as chief financial officer, the firm takes responsibility for budgeting and cash-flow requirements. “We make sure the right amounts flow at the right time from the right source.” Malloy and her partners are seasoned financial advisers who have seen it all. “Money can be a powerful force for growth and change, but it can also divide families that aren’t prepared to handle it wisely,” she says. “Treating wealth as a business is the first step toward responsible, effective management, and puts you on the path toward successfully achieving long-term goals.”

business [IN]sight Buckingham Asset Management ] by catherine klene Playing the stock market game may have left many investors wringing their hands, but even before the current rollercoaster ride, one local company based its reputation on passive investment plans, with one of the co-founders producing 10 books on the approach. Buckingham Asset Management was founded by four CPAs in 1994 to provide logical, long-term investment management versus high-risk portfolios. “Most investors look for needles in the haystack. We think it’s better to own the whole haystack,” says CEO Adam Birenbaum. “There’s no evidence that you can consistently outperform the market. Instead, we focus on the planning side and on low-cost, globally diversified investments that capture the markets.” BAM’s investment strategy inspired Birenbaum early. He began working as an intern for the company in 2003 while studying law at Saint Louis University. “I never had any intention of being an attorney, much to my parents’ chagrin,” he says, laughing. “But I thought a law degree would be a wonderful asset in a business environment. At BAM, I soaked up as much knowledge as I possibly could,” Birenbaum says. “I went to lunch with everyone every day and hammered them with questions about the business and the industry.” Impressed with Birenbaum’s drive, the founders brought him on fulltime. For two years, he juggled his work at BAM, a full legal course load and a fiance living in Chicago. He was made the youngest principal in the company’s history after just a few years, and last year at just 32, he was made CEO. “It was one of the craziest, most fun, exhilarating times of my life,” he says. “My biggest fear was missing out on the opportunity Buckingham had to change people’s lives for the better. Not for one second did I think about slowing down, nor will I ever. I have the most amazing job in the world.” If anything, BAM seems to be accelerating as fast as its CEO. The company merged with Wealth Management Consultants in California in 2010 and with RNM Financial Management in Alaska in 2011. Today, BAM manages $14 billion in collective assets. “Every dollar translates back to a human being or a life we have hopefully added value to,” Birenbaum says. “That’s why we want to grow. We don’t want to be good sales people. We want to be educators and planners.” That focus on education keeps BAM associates studying the latest academic investment research, he says, not just that day’s market news. Co-founder and principal Larry Swedroe frequently appears on CBS News to discuss rational investing in what at times appears to be an irrational market. “The academic approach we have fits extremely well with my background and our founders’ CPA backgrounds,” Birenbaum says. “People who actually look at what academia is saying about how to invest recognize that evidence-based management adds value over long periods of time.” BAM’s evidence-based planning encourages clients to plan ahead for turbulent markets. “If we believe in capitalism and a free market society, over long periods of time markets will perform well,” Birenbaum says. “Those who invest capital in markets will be rewarded. Risk and return are related, but only taking as much risk as you need to take to achieve your goals and objectives.” PHOTO BY bill barrett

The Best-Looking Models in Ballwin!
3 [Resolutions Get Your Finances in Order by lauren madras “A budget is telling your money where to go, instead of wondering where it went,” says Ken Poteet, president of Sterling Bank. He tells his clients not to worry about allocating every single expense, but to consider their monthly cash flow by group. “When people get into financial trouble, it’s usually because they are living a certain lifestyle their financial reality doesn’t support.” He advises planning a budget that first takes into account your financial commitments: bills, housing costs, etc. “After subtracting those expenses from your income, see what you have left. I always advise paying off debt first. You should never have more than 45 percent of your annual income in debt,” Poteet says. “And try to keep your housing expenses at 35 percent of your income or less.” Paying off debt is the best investment in a tough market, he says. “It’s unlikely any investment will earn more in dividends than you pay out in interest. Think of that saved interest as an investment in yourself,” Poteet says. Credit cards are the most important debt to pay because of their high interest. With the exception of the holiday season or some other special occasion, you should be paying off your entire credit card each statement period, he says. If you’re not, you’re spending beyond your means. “The best thing you can do for yourself is be realistic and look at the numbers. If you aren’t reaching the 35 and 45 percent benchmarks, then make a plan to get there as soon as possible,” Poteet says. “When you have a more manageable level of debt, put together a cash savings of three to six months of living expenses. You may find that you need to downgrade your housing costs to a more sustainable level or be prepared to face very harsh realities, such as foreclosure or bankruptcy.”

the goofball, the boy next door. Now, meet Ryan Reynolds, the bad-ass action hero. This spy movie follows Reynolds as a green CIA agent stuck in a boring South African post, until Denzel Washington, super-agent gone rogue, gives him a little ‘field experience.’ The movie jolts between whispered conversations and ear-blasting explosions, with little in-between, and suffers from a serious lack of exposition. The ambitious plot doesn’t quite have the script to hold it up, but the cast, which also includes Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson and Sam Shepard, has the experience to make it worth the price of admission. Should You See It? It’s a little soul-crushing to see Reynolds kill a man with his bare hands, but if you love explosions and conspiracy theories, this is a perfect popcorn flick. —L.M. Wanderlust >> The best way to describe this is like a really
long and not-very-good SNL script. The premise is kind of cute: Yuppie couple get in over their heads when they buy a West Village apartment and lose their jobs, resulting in a move to Atlanta to work for family. On the way, they take a detour through a hippie commune, resulting in the concomitant hysterical situations. Unfortunately, every character there is over-the-top, making it more of a caricature than a memorable comedy like Animal House, which also had a host of ‘characters’ in a funny situation, yet didn’t devolve into the ridiculous. The best part was Linda Lavin’s (Alice) cameo as the slick NYC real estate agent who sold the couple their ‘great investment’ efficiency and then laughed out loud when they asked her to re-list it for them. Should You See It? That depends on whether you like Judd Apatow movies; it’s somewhere between Pineapple Express and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.—D.W. Viewed at chase park plaza cinema

Whitfield wrestling team
[ grappling glory ]
by catherine klene
Whitfield, Parkway South Senior Earn State Titles Coach Charlie Sherertz was confident his team would do well at state. But when Whitfield took an unbeatable lead after day one of the two-day contest, even he was impressed. “I thought it might come down to the championship matches, but the team race was over Friday night,” Sherertz says. “It was a relief and allowed me to focus on getting through the last matches of the tournament.” Whitfield took the class 1 state title with a stunning 196.5 points—46.5 points ahead of second place team Blair Oaks. With the team title already in the bag, Whitfield plunged into the final matches with the determination and confidence created by a brutal regular season. “We said if we can survive the regular season and become tougher, we would be the most prepared team when we got to state,” Sherertz says. “Of course, saying it and having them believe it are two different things.” Five individual titles later, it’s safe to say the Warriors believed. Seniors Ethan Sherertz and Austin Smith won the 182-pound and 132-pound weight classes, respectively. Junior Chris Wilkes took the 126-pound class, and fellow junior Will Hahn dominated the 152-pound class. Sophomore Rodney Hahn added a second title to his record, this time at 145 pounds. “Every challenge we faced, the kids had the resolve to overcome it,” Sherertz says. “We’d have a bump in the road, but we just kept moving forward. If they hadn’t had that resolve the whole season, there’s no way we could have five champions in the state finals.” Whitfield wasn’t the only surprise at state. Parkway South senior Donnell Walker conquered the class 4 heavyweight finals, defeating his opponent in just 4 minutes, 50 seconds. The match was far more than a victory; it was redemption, as Walker lost to the same opponent after tearing a ligament in the 2011 semifinals. “I was worried this year,” Walker says. “I didn’t want a repeat of last year. I knew I could beat him. When I won, I just freaked out.”
[ splashing success ] Swimmers Bring Home Gold, Break Records Parkway North’s Heather Lundstrom isn’t sure how she’s going to top this year. The junior just earned two titles at state and set a new state record for the 100-meter butterfly at 54.52 seconds. “That was really cool,” Lundstrom says. “My coach was confident I could do it. I couldn’t see the results on the board for a minute, but I heard the reaction of the audience.” This is Lundstrom’s second consecutive state win in the 100 butterfly. She also won the 200-meter individual medley at 2:05.5. “I’ve been pretty confident this year,” she says. “I definitely have more experience in the water.” Parkway West senior Kate Gately finished her high school swimming career strong, earning the top spots in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter freestyle competitions. She set a new school record for the 50 freestyle at 00:23.33 and finished her 100 freestyle at an impressive 00:51.69. Gately knew she faced some tough competition but says she kept her composure. “I was a little nervous. It’s hard not to be at such a big meet with strong competitors—but I couldn’t let sophomores beat me!” she says, laughing. The girls of St. Joe and MICDS also took high honors. MICDS senior Annie Goessling took the gold for the 100-meter breaststroke at 1.05.51, and St. Joe’s 200-meter freestyle relay team won at 1:39.58. 20 |

as Jayhawks at Kansas University. Ford was pursuing a master’s degree in sports administration, and Kristen was on the women’s soccer team and studying engineering. One of her teammates introduced the pair—and now she’s a bridesmaid in their May 26 wedding. Ford proposed with a romantic breakfast in bed last September. “We had discussed getting married, and I knew it was coming,” Kristen says. “But that morning I was certainly surprised!” The couple currently live in College Station, but will move to Ford’s hometown of St. Louis in a few weeks for his new marketing position with the St. Louis Blues. The wedding is in Kristen’s hometown of Kansas City. Her parents take pride in their lushly landscaped backyard garden, which will serve as the setting for an intimate, family-only ceremony. “Ford and I are outdoorsy people, so a garden ceremony is perfect for us,” Kristen says. “We’re taking the theme to the reception in the decor, with lots of flowers and natural details.” Kristen is following in her sister’s footsteps with her wedding plans, sticking with familiar venues and vendors. The wedding will be traditional, but with a few twists, like the flambé donut-hole dessert bar. Afterward, the newlyweds will honeymoon in St. Lucia before setting up house in St. Louis. “We will be so glad to be back in the same state as both our families!” Kristen says.

Our
Complicated Gut] by mary jo blackwood, RN, MPH
Our hearts are the engines that drive our bodies, and our brains are the control stations. But the gastrointestinal system nourishes us and protects us from invaders. New research indicates the GI system may even trigger diabetes. Keeping it balanced and healthy is the key to smooth, well-regulated digestion.
[ gut regulation | diet and probiotics ] [ colon cleansing myths] We’ve all seen ads and articles touting colon cleansing systems, enemas and high colonics as ways to rid the body of harmful toxins. Time for a reality check. “There is no benefit to colon cleansing,” says Dr. Thomas Hastings of Esse Health. “In fact, it can be quite harmful. Below, he addresses a couple of myths associated with the uses of colon cleanses. Myth: Colon cleansing removes toxins from the system. Fact: Actually, it removes healthy bacteria that digest your food and help absorb vitamins and nutrients. Your colon seeks its own equilibrium. Colon cleansing, like antibiotic use, can cause overgrowth of bad bacteria. Myth: Colon cleansing is good for weight loss. Fact: It causes dehydration, temporary weight loss that is immediately regained when you rehydrate. Dehydration is dangerous because it can lead to serious electrolyte imbalance and severe muscle weakness that can lead to falls. “The only appropriate uses for evacuating the colon are in cases of severe constipation or to prepare the GI tract for imaging studies,” Hastings says. “Otherwise, leave your colon alone.”

Keeping the digestive system functioning optimally involves a combination of eating the right foods and bolstering good bacteria in the GI tract.
probiotics to our diet can help the gut fight colonization by bad bacteria and prevent consistent inflammation that could lead to inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).
Rebecca Compton, director of quality control, Everidis Many people don’t understand what the GI system does. Microorganisms in our gut ferment carbohydrates into fatty acids, synthesize and activate vitamins B and K, balance absorption of salt and water, break down fats and cholesterol, and detoxify waste. Like the central nervous system, the gut also has a nervous system that tells the brain to secrete certain enzymes and hormones when we eat. Any abnormalities of the bacteria throws everything off. We are what we eat. Certain bacteria play a positive role in digestive health, like the bifidobacteria mothers transmit to infants in their breast milk. Adding live
Rob Elder, chiropractor, Metro Chiropractic There are many reasons for GI problems, including bad diet, food allergies and chronic antibiotic use. To get the gut stabilized, we follow a ‘weed, feed and seed’ protocol. We first weed out inflammation and calm the gut by using soothing substances, including okra pepsin, aloe vera and gastric bentonite. After that, we feed the system to prepare a good gut environment for probiotics with fiber and inulin. At that point, I test for food allergies like gluten that can irritate the gut. Finally, we seed the system with probiotics: good bacteria that can take hold once the inflammation is down. Raw salads are loaded with probiotics. Good bacteria are more likely to stay around if patients avoid simple sugars, processed grains and antibiotics.
[ constipation | complex problem ] Because of rising obesity rates, sedentary lifestyles and poor diets, constipation has been a growing problem for a decade. The causes might overlap, but different issues may be involved with children and adults. Dr. Amana Nasir, pediatric gastroenterologist, Mercy Children’s Hospital Children who have chronic constipation need aggressive treatment because it can lead to other problems, like pressure on the bladder and urinating accidents. The causes of constipation in kids vary with age. In children under a year old, we check for anatomical problems. Toddlers may be constipated because of potty training issues or because they don’t want to stop playing long enough to go to the bathroom. School-age children may also not like to interrupt their activities, or they don’t want to go while at school. Taking care of the physiological issues by getting more liquids and fiber in the diet, especially more fruits and vegetables, helps. In younger children, picking up on cues and getting them to the bathroom sooner may solve the problem. Establishing a daily routine can help train children to have bowel movements before or after school.
Dr. James Fleshman, chief of Colorectal Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine A medical diagnosis of constipation is made when less than one spontaneous bowel movement occurs every seven days. Most people have inadequate fiber intake, so gastrointestinal transit slows. In the old days, when wheat or corn wasn’t processed and we ate more whole grains, it wasn’t a problem. Laxatives work by partially damaging the colon’s lining and nerves. Instead, I usually recommend one heaping cereal spoon of Metamucil or Konsyl (about 12 grams), in a glass of water. Along with more fiber in the diet, it will make softer bowel movements and take care of routine constipation. Sometimes constipation has other causes, like a tumor partially blocking the way, malfunction in the pelvic floor, loss of anal sensation or nerve problems in the colon. For pelvic floor problems, physical therapy can often help retrain muscles to function correctly.
HEALTH&BEAUTY
[ crohn’s and colitis ] Both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis affect the GI system and fall under the category of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), often confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Dr. Jeffrey Kreikemeier, Gateway Gastroenterology IBS used to be called spastic colitis, a misnomer because “-itis” implies inflammation and there is none. IBS affects quality of life but won’t shorten longevity or lead to complications and vitamin deficiency. IBD, on the other hand, often gets progressively worse, and over time also increases the risk for colon cancer. It’s important to see a gastroenterologist as early as possible to get a correct diagnosis. Crohn’s can affect the GI system from the mouth to the anus, but ulcerative colitis is confined to the large intestine. Both are systemic diseases that also can cause vitamin deficiencies, arthritis, skin rashes, kidney or gallstones, and eye problems. IBD typically strikes people in their 20s or 30s who need to heed alarming symptoms like blood in tahe stool, unexplained weight loss and abdominal pain that wakes them up. The encouraging part is that, though not curable, IBD can be managed with good medications. Dr. Dustin James, Chesterfield Valley Gastroenterology Both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks its own cells. In Crohn’s disease, there may be a five-year lag between symptoms and diagnosis, because the symptoms are much more varied than ulcerative colitis.
Ask the Expert
Both diseases wax and wane. Flare-ups are more likely in the winter and with lower vitamin D levels. People with Crohn’s disease do better when their vitamin D levels are at the high end of normal. Vitamin B-12 is absorbed in the small intestine where Crohn’s often hits, so we monitor those levels, too. Treatment for both Crohn’s and colitis vary according to severity. For mild cases, diet, probiotics and some aspirin-type drugs may work. For severe cases, stronger medications can dramatically turn down the immune system response but leave the patient more susceptible to infections and lymphomas. Surgery is a last resort, usually recommended only when there is scarring or persistently inflamed bowel areas.
[ cool tool Women need about 25 grams of fiber a day; men need about 38 grams. But how do you
know if you’re hitting the mark? This handy website
can help. Simply click and drag images of apples, raspberries and other food to a plate to how much fiber each provides. It’s free at netreturns.biz/etools/flex/tools/fiber.html
[ fiber facts ] Jason Barbour, owner of Metabolic Meals, gives us a brief tutorial on the benefits of fiber. Fiber comes only from plant sources. There are two types of fiber, both very good for you. Soluble fiber, found in oat bran, beans, peas, carrots, and fruits such as oranges and apples, attracts water and make you feel full. Insoluble fiber, found in vegetables, seeds, nuts, fruit peel and vegetable skins, adds bulk and speeds food along the GI tract, preventing constipation. Ideally, you want to get at least 25 grams a fiber a day, although the average American eats less than six. You can easily meet 80 percent of your fiber needs through diet, and add fiber supplements to cereal or a smoothie for the rest. Building up to 25 grams through diet and supplements should be gradual, so your body can adjust without cramping. Start with small changes, like eating wholegrain oatmeal instead of instant. By eating a full range of vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and seeds, you get a spectrum of protective substances such as fiber, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants, all of which are designed to work together. Bonus: A high fiber meal before dessert helps modify blood sugar spikes.
Question: First there was Botox® , then Dysport® , and now Xeomin® is available to treat forehead and brow wrinkles. What are the differences among these products?
Answer: Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA), Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA), and now Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) are all variants of a class of neuromodulators derived from botulinum toxin type A. This is a naturally occurring neurotoxin produced by the gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, Clostridium botulinum, which causes the clinical syndrome of botulism. In the same way that penicillin was originally isolated from naturally occurring mold, these drugs are synthesized from botulinum toxin, to create medically useful neuromodulators. Unlike antibiotics, neuromodulators are a relatively new drug class. They may be used for both cosmetic and medical purposes. Botox® , Dysport® , and Xeomin® are FDA approved for the treatment of wrinkles in the central forehead and brows. Other brand names exist and are marketed with non-cosmetic medical indications such as the treatment of dystonia, excessive sweating and migraine headaches.
Mark Checcone, MD Washington University Facial Plastic Surgery
Whether for cosmetic or medical indications, the biological activity of these drugs is the same. Neuromodulators alter the normal biological communication between nerve endings and muscles. Whether the intended target is an unwanted spastic muscle or an overly active frowning muscle, in both instances the drug binds to the nerve ending near the muscle junction to disrupt a chemical cascade causing muscle contraction. Eventually the effect wears off as the nerve reinnervates the target muscle to circumvent the blockade and reestablish muscle movement. Since this takes several months, maintenance of the desired affect requires injections every 3-6 months. Some patients do not respond to the medication at all, due to their immune system destroying the drug before it can act. Having multiple choices of neuromodulators means more options for patients.
West County • Center for Advanced Medicine

For cosmetic usage, Botox® and Dysport® have been around for years. Xeomin® is the newest entrant with the advertised storage advantage at room temperature rather than freezing. Although differences of longevity among these drugs are not yet established, all are safe and effective for their approved use. Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion
Privé Finishing Texture Spray
Bumble and Bumble Bb. Texture
Pravana the Beach Wave Control Mist
Don’t shake this bottle. No, really: don’t shake it. Inside is a white powder that when shaken, turns to a liquid gel and sets your hair with amazing volume that will really last—no back-combing required. Dust it lightly onto your roots directly from the bottle, then work it in with your fingers. It’s great for creating the base of updos or setting up your roots to support curls. It’s also perfect for those mornings when you don’t have time to do your hair, but want some lift and life before your 8 a.m. meeting. It can awaken yesterday’s blowout, too.
Are you more a Serena than a Blair? This texture spray gives matte hold and frizz control without the perma-freeze or shine of your mother’s AquaNet. The light scent isn’t overpowering, and the shape really lasts. Shake the can before applying to dry hair, then heat-style as desired. You can also use it to add new life to your hair at the end of a workday. Simply spray all over, flip your hair and spray the under layers, too. Shake your head like an ’80s Hair Band, and voila: your bounce from the morning’s blow-dry is back!
This creme works best for medium to short hair with lots of layers. In damp or even wet hair, smooth in a small amount, focusing on the ends and working up. Build product slowly so it is evenly dispersed and not clumping. Use a diffuser and a brush to blow-dry chunks of your hair. For more rock star glam, blow-dry your hair forward into your face and let bangs and face-framing layers fall haphazardly. If you’re a hair fusser, skip the mirror on your way out the door. Here, imperfect is the new perfect.
This inexpensive product is perfect for daily use—it’s not a salt spray like many other ‘beach wave’ products. Instead, the formula enriches your tresses with jojoba and rosemary extract, keratin, wheat and silk amino acids, and it’s salt, sulfate and paraben-free. The spray will evoke the feeling of summer, too, with just the lightest scent of piña colada (coconut and vanilla). Spray generously into damp hair and tousle with your fingers before allowing to air dry or drying with a diffuser.
Hate to break it to you, but when battling limp hair, the best bet is labor-intensive and requires a little more skill. But these heated, ceramic clips really do create loose waves, big curls or tight ringlets and lift at the roots. The accessories are included, and there’s a photo-illustrated guide. Please practice first—don’t experiment on the day of your best friend’s wedding or the morning of an important job interview. But once you get the hang of it, your styles will stick around for days. elle Around[phusia Town

check in each month while Elle tries the new (and sometimes off-the-wall) crazes in St. Louis. This month she stops by the City Studio to find out what all the Phusia hype is about. Have a tip? Email elle@townandstyle.com with suggestions!
Running on a treadmill is my idea of hell, so finding a cardio workout that holds my interest is key. That’s why Phusia appealed to me: a dance-inspired fitness class? Sounds like fun. I’d seen Phusia on the Web and on the local news, touted as the next Zumba. I previously had been a Yoga Booty Ballet enthusiast and taken a few Zumba classes, so that piqued my interest even more. So I called Kari James, who runs Phusia classes at The City Studio in the Central West End, to join one of the early sessions. The class has been available only for a few months in St. Louis, but it was chock-full of participants—in fact, I’m surprised we all didn’t crash into each other! The method was simple: repetitive dance moves set to popular (and current!) music, that speed up and get more complicated as you get more comfortable with the steps. Kat de Luna, Alicia Keys and Big & Rich were among the artists played. I missed the first two sessions, and it was a little hard to catch up on the routines. I was grateful for earlier years of dance class; armed with a vocabulary that included chasee and pas de bourrée, I was able to follow James’ call-out dance moves. If you don’t have dance experience, I recommend starting from class one. The routines were easy to adapt around my left knee, which has an old injury and doesn’t tolerate high-impact exercise well. As I learned the steps, I could dance faster, which stepped up the cardio level. All in all, the class was fun, but I barely broke a sweat and wasn’t at all sore the next day. This is a great activity for casual exercise, but if you’re used to a more intense routine, schedule this class for your off day. I wore cross trainers to my first session, but flexible tennis shoes would have been better. For subsequent sessions, running shoes designed for cross-country made me feel more graceful. Yoga pants or leggings that are flexible and not too low, as well as a long, stretchy T-shirt will help avoid baring too much skin when you dip, lunge and jump. My fellow dancers ranged in age and ability. Some of the younger girls at the front

were former dancers and cheerleaders with excellent timing and rhythm. But don’t be intimidated, because there were women well past middle age and at a wide range of fitness levels. It’s definitely a girls’ club, with jokes about marriage, husbands, babies and shopping punctuating the music. Come ready to laugh— and have fun!

parent trap College:] The Holy Grail by dr. tim jordan many kids today have been fed the following mantra since they were toddlers: Work your hardest 24/7 so that you can get into a good high school; get straight A’s so you can go to an elite college; graduate with a 4.0 GPA so you can get a good job; get this perfect job so you can make a lot of money. Sound familiar? This has become their Holy Grail. I have a lot of problems with this mindset. For one thing, young kids should not have ‘becoming rich’ as their goal. Research has shown that people whose primary focus is making money are unhappier and unhealthier than the rest of us. Another issue with this mantra is that it’s just not true. For instance, going to an elite college rather than a ‘good’ college does not significantly improve financial success or lifetime happiness. In Richard Settersten’s 2010 book, Not Quite Adults, he points to findings that show, “without controlling for family background, SAT scores, or family income, lifetime earnings rarely reflect where students go to college. What they do reflect is whether or not they have a degree.” People with a bachelor’s degree will earn, on average, 54 percent more than people without a college degree. It’s true that only about 25 percent of 25- to 34-year-olds have a college degree and 5 percent have a masters or professional degree. So like most aspirations throughout history, it’s mostly the upper class living out this dream, while the majority of the population sees the college degree as something to aspire to. It worries me that adults have such unrealistic expectations for kids, i.e., everyone should be getting straight A’s, make the best select sports teams, etc. Anything less than the best is considered a failure. Most parents won’t actually say this out loud, but kids feel the pressures. By the time our 18-year-olds leave the nest, they have internalized these expectations. It’s no wonder they become fixated on searching for the best colleges, the best degree, the ideal job and the perfect mate. And it’s no wonder our 20-somethings feel stuck and confused. Is college important? Yes, but certainly not for all. And it is certainly not the end-all we make it out to be. We need to have realistic expectations. The highest GPA and top school do not mean you’ve ‘won,’ at least not when it comes to happiness and fulfillment. Culturally, we need to provide more and better alternatives to the four-year degree and value them. And even more important and value kids developing their ‘inner résumés,’ things like social and emotional intelligence, an internal compass, and self-confidence. I’d hate to see young people attaining this Holy Grail we’ve set out for them only to discover they’ve missed out on an authentic, fulfilling life. Oyster-stuffed Surf and Turf, Potato Skins, Knuckle Sandwich, Grilled Caesar Salad

The steakhouse inside Harrah’s Casino in Maryland Heights is now aligned with Kelly English, the acclaimed young chef of Restaurant Iris in Memphis. English grew up in New Orleans and comes with plenty of street cred, including Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs 2009 and James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef Southeast semi-finalist. He was here to open the new spot, and word has it he visits (and cooks) regularly. As you’d expect, Southern victuals (and hospitality) reign. Prices are typical for a prime-meat steakhouse—the 8-ounce filet is $33—but portions are generous and come with salad occasionally sides. If you love the classic New England lobster roll, don’t miss the Knuckle Sandwich ($16). A thick slice of French bread is generously topped with the meat of several claws and creamy tarragon beurre blanc. English’s twist on the lowly Stuffed Potato Skin ($10),
which he fills with tuna tartare, creme fraiche and a smidge of black caviar, is another must-taste dish. The super-crisp skins (baked before the stuffing is added) turn them into potato crostini. Entrees come with the house salad, but you can request one of the other salads for a slight upcharge. These are inventive, like Brussels Sprouts Salad ($7) with bacon or ‘Grilled’ Caesar ($8), in which a head of romaine is halved and stuffed with thick shavings of parmesan, anchovies, croutons and creamy dressing. It’s passed under the broiler before serving, so it’s slightly warm with wilted outer edges. We opted for one of English’s signature dishes, Surf and Turf ($36): a New York strip sliced in half and stuffed with fried oysters and blue cheese. The tender meat sat on a bed of potato hash with bacon, all drizzled with bordelaise and hollandaise sauces—very rich and very flavorful. The oysters, especially, were a

treat—Southern-fried with a crisp, heavy coating. Alas, the Soft-Shell Crab entree ($34), with the same heavy breading, didn’t play as well. The two large crustaceans simply got lost in the breading, and being out of season, they also lacked their characteristic sweetness. The Sweet Potato ‘dressing’ they sat on, however, was that delicious Southern incarnation dosed with maple syrup and sugar. A side of Spinach Madeline ($5) offered fresh baby leaves in cream, heavily flavored with red bell peppers. For dessert, My Grandma’s Bread Pudding ($6), laced with bourbon, had a delicious, soft texture and excellent caramel sauce (also spiked). The Coffee Crème Brulee ($6) had plenty of coffee flavor, although it wasn’t as creamy rich as some I’ve had. The accompanying Beignets—which came to the table beautifully puffed and hot, were loaded with powdered sugar—just perfect.

Monarch (and Herbie’s) owners Jeff Orbin and Aaron Teitelbaum are closing the restaurant after nine years. They explained that a trio of problems—poor economy, the sheer size of the restaurant and the “multitude of discount dining deal programs”—led to the decision. Executive chef Josh Galliano says while he doesn’t know what his next move will be, he plans to stay in St. Louis. The last day of service will be March 10.

T&S SPRING MARKET] [ SPECIAL SECTION
REAL ESTATE
by lauren madras
enclave bellerive
The pace is picking up at Enclave Bellerive, which saw record sales in 2011. “As other new developments have failed, we have weathered a very difficult real estate market and remain on solid financial footing,” says managing director Chris Vatterott. “The last five years have been a humbling experience for builders and developers, but times are changing. We were the most active development in Creve Coeur last year, and we’re looking forward to a good season.” The development is located at the intersection of Ladue and Mason roads, just east of Bellerive Country Club. “It’s the best of both worlds: a beautiful, 44-acre property that’s convenient to major traffic arteries, but also has a quiet, elegant atmosphere, free of noise pollution,” Vatterott says. In the next two months, two new homeowners will move into Enclave Bellerive, and as the weather thaws, Vatterott expects to see even more sales. “We made key changes in the last year that make Enclave Bellerive a very attractive property,” he says. “There’s incredible quality and service here, as well as flexibility and value.” For a limited time, the lots in the subdivision are available at a discounted price of $310,000 to $410,000. “We’ve loosened the architectural guidelines to incorporate more styles. Originally, we planned a neighborhood that mimicked the look and feel of Bellerive Country Club, using the all-brick Jeffersonian style, but sensed resistance from the market and wanted to open it up to more options, while still retaining a traditional feel,” he says. Designs still must adhere to high standards with 65 percent brick facades, but can include high quality siding as well,

which provides more design freedom. Buyers can buy lots and bring in their own builders, or use one of the six building plans available through Enclave Bellerive. All plans have to be approved by the architectural review committee, and the builders must comply with the Best Builder Practices Agreement. Some lots have already been purchased by investors, who are taking advantage of the temporary price reduction. “There’s no better time than now to buy, while premium lots are available,” Vatterott says. “As the market in general continues to improve, building costs won’t remain as low.” There also are a few finished properties for sale or lease directly from Enclave Bellerive. “Each of our four original model homes is leased now,” he says. “But three displays are also available for purchase, with owner financing and as a little as 10 percent down for qualified buyers.” Available homes range in size from 2,500 to 6,500 square feet. One amenity all the homes share is grounds maintenance, including lawn care, snow removal and irrigation expenses, which are taken care of for $350 per month. “We’re a full-service development, with happy relationships with all our residents,” Vatterott says.
Enclave Bellerive, a luxury development at Ladue and Mason roads in Creve Coeur, is open noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and by appointment. For more information, call Chris Vatterott at 314.280.8080 or email cj.vatterott@gmail.com

by lauren madras “In 75 years and more than three moves, the offices of Gladys
Manion Real Estate have traveled only about a quarter-mile,” says Stafford Manion, president of the company. His grandmother, the company’s namesake, grew up in Clayton and based her business there among a slew of small real estate firms. “Now only a few remain, with others bought by national chains or merged with out-of-town companies,” Manion says. The Clayton Chamber of Commerce recently awarded Manion and the team at Gladys Manion with the 2011 Excellence in Retail/Service award. “The first thing that came to my mind was What would Gladys think?” he says. “Though she died in 1971, her portrait hangs in the conference room. She is very much a part of the day-to-day activity of the company.” Why has Gladys Manion Real Estate survived and thrived when so many other small local firms have fallen by the wayside? “I think what sets us apart is that we aren’t trying to sell anything,” he says. “Our agents try to be educators. Buyers come to us, and we help them make sense of their options and get the best deal they can. For sellers, it’s our job to invite people to see the home and market the sale—but we want the most-informed decisions possible to be made.” In the next year, Manion anticipates the market to improve, particularly for realistic sellers. “Buyers are out there spending money. Prices may be a little lower than we’d like, but with motivation on both sides, we can get properties sold and people in new homes,” he says. The company is known for always having a Manion at the wheel: Stafford has been president since 1980, and his only son will soon graduate from Indiana University with a degree in finance. “He’s the heir apparent, and would be the fourth generation for this family business. But there’s no pressure,” Manion jokes. Manion was honored at the recent Clayton Chamber of Commerce annual awards dinner at the Ritz Carlton Feb. 9. Also honored were Michael F. Neidorff of Centene Corporation, who was named 2011 Business Person of the Year, and The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis, honored with the 2011 Cornerstone Award.

by tony di martino Navy brat Marcy Byrne was born in Florida, but moved to St. Louis when she was in sixth grade. “My dad’s from here, so I definitely feel like St. Louis is my home,” says Byrne, who has been at Janet McAfee 20 years. She’s married to Bob Byrne, who owns Erker Catering Co. Before I took the plunge into real estate, I was in sales, retail and fashion merchandising for upscale specialty stores in Atlanta and Houston. But I didn’t like the way the business was changing, so I took some time off and moved to Colorado, where my sister and nephews lived. That’s when I got my real estate license. I was there for a year when my dad got sick, so I returned to St. Louis to help care for him. My first sale at McAfee was for a couple I found while on phone duty at the office. It was for $750,000, a big deal in those days! That first sale was all it took to fall in love with this business. ‘Civilians’ don’t understand how difficult and time-consuming this job really is. You cannot sell real estate part time. You must be totally committed to your clients 24/7, offering them the best service possible. You need to be on top of the market and stay ahead of constantly changing technology. Whether it’s a listing or a sale, I try to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for my clients. I always try to treat people as I’d like to be treated. You can’t go wrong with the Golden Rule. More often than you’d think, real estate agents make and stay good friends with clients. Pricing and condition are everything these days. If you want to sell, you need to enter the market making the best impression possible. You’ll know within the first three weeks if you’ve overpriced your house, so make the adjustment as soon as possible. To keep stress levels at a minimum, I run our big rescue dog, Sam, every morning and play golf as often as I can. I don’t have a lot of free time, given present market conditions. I’m working harder than ever, but most people are right now. The industry has really changed. These days there’s more paperwork, more inspections, more demands from buyers and sellers. You need to keep a good attitude and maintain a sense of balance. No matter how hard you try, some things are out of your control. If you can realize that but still go in there every day and do your best, that’s the key to success. If I wasn’t in real estate, I would love to work with animals. My dream is to own a farm one day and adopt as many as I can.

homework] deaR HomeWork,
Our Wildwood home is perched on a hill with a circular drive at the crest of the frontyard. The current landscaping is overgrown, and the exterior detail is washed out with an abundance of white paint. While the front porch offers privacy from a busy street, its aesthetics are shadowed by overgrowth with little complement from the stark, grassy hill. How can we enhance the curb appeal of this corner property? ———Wildly Overgrown in Wildwood
Dear Wildly Overgrown in Wildwood, I think your house has a lot going for it and just needs a little help—especially from some pruning shears. Your chief problem is the overgrown evergreen bushes that threaten to engulf your house. Your house has great proportions and detailing that deserve to be seen. Either prune or replant the hedge at the base of your charming front porch. Don’t let the new hedge grow taller than the floor of the porch. This will allow a view of the distinctive paired columns and wood hand rail. After You seem to dislike the white siding of your house, but I think it looks classic and quintessentially American. It also contrasts well with the green-black shutters and reddish-brown roof. I would leave it alone. The most important thing would be to add some tall, noble, deciduous trees on your hilly front lawn and in the sidewalk lawn in front. These new trees will accentuate the dramatic hilltop setting. They will help frame the house rather than obliterate it, as the bushes do. This quick and easy fix will give you a distinctive new look. So get pruning and planting, and thanks for asking, ———Homework HomeWork is penned by Paul Doerner, president, The Lawrence Group. if you would like your home critiqued, contact us at homework@townandstyle.com
