[ letter from the editor ] There are some topics we just naturally shy away from, like death and disease. Today’s parenting column brings up just that kind of issue: stranger danger. I remember when my kids’ school offered workshops on it—and the dread the whole thing filled me with. Do we really need to talk to 7-year-old girls about abduction? Yes! Like facing death and disease, we have to face telling our youngsters about ‘bad people.’ We don’t like doing it, probably because we’d prefer to pretend that all three of these things don’t exist—that if we close our eyes to them, they’ll somehow go away. We all know how effective that is. The big hurdle is ‘how.’ We don’t want to scare our kids into catatonia or divulge more details than necessary. We have to walk that line between educating and alarming. Otherwise we could actually do more harm than good. The last thing we want is a youngster who fears all adults—or the opposite: one who grows up to think everything we warn them about is bogus because we routinely exaggerate dangers. And then there’s the sobering statement Dr. Jordan begins his article with: Ninety percent of molestation cases involved people the child knew—another fact of life we’d really like to shy away from. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

phraseology [ freyz • ŏ • lō • gy ] Stuck between a rock and a hard place

We’ve all been there, but where did the phrase originate? The likely source was a 1917 dispute between miners and mine owners in Bisbee, Ariz. The workers, doing harsh, underpaid work at the rock face, asked for a raise and better working conditions. The bosses not only refused, but fired the miners and chased them out of town. The phrase is now used when there are two possible outcomes to a situation, neither one particularly appealing.

sterling] bank cover story

Sterling Bank, which recently opened a full-service facility in Clayton, has quickly become a major player in the local banking community. “We’re confident we can meet any challenge in the marketplace,” says CEO and chairman Ken Poteet. “We’re the best at what we do, and we have the statistics to prove it.” Established in 2004 in Poplar Bluff, Sterling Bank was profitable within three months. “Of 124 banks chartered that same year, we’re now the top performer in the nation,” Poteet says. Within three years, the bank had reached $100 million in assets and opened a facility in Van Buren, Mo. Total assets now exceed $375 million, he notes. Rated one of the top five banks in the state and among the top 100 in the nation, Sterling ranks high in every category, including earnings, credit quality and safety. “We’ve had increased earnings every year,” he says. “We keep getting better—in fact, we grew 35 percent last year, and most of that business came from Clayton. So it was only natural to make a full commitment to the Clayton market when we decided to expand into St. Louis.” That kind of accelerated growth is rare in a sluggish economy, Poteet notes. “But our commitment to excellence really sets us apart,” he says. “It’s been ingrained in our culture since day one. Average is not OK at Sterling Bank. We surround ourselves with people who are the very best at what they do and who are continually conforming to a higher standard. Our team is self-motivated, educated and results-based.” That means better service and more opportunities for the bank’s high-end commercial and individual clients, he adds. Sterling Bank primarily focuses on tax-credit lending for low-to-moderate-income housing throughout the country. “We’ve loaned more than $2 billion in tax credits since 2004,” Poteet says. “These federal and state credits are purchased by high-net-worth individuals to offset their tax liability, creating a tremendous synergy between tax advantages for our clients and affordable housing for seniors and families. Everyone benefits.” The bank’s mission extends beyond business hours. “We’re doing a series of monthly afterwork concerts and events, Sterling After Hours, that everyone can enjoy this spring and summer,” Poteet says. Music ranges from jazz, blues and Motown to contemporary pop. The events take place every third Thursday at Sterling Plaza, a 3,000-square-foot landscaped area on the south side of the Clayton bank. The plaza features limited-edition sculpture by noted artists, a fountain and Sterling’s signature clock tower. “During the day, people can bring their lunch, relax and enjoy free Wi-Fi; after work, they can socialize over drinks and live music,” Poteet says. “The plaza, along with our state-of-the-art facility and service, is our gift to St. Louis. Like everything we do, it shows our commitment to building a great community bank. We have the business model, culture and financial resources to make a meaningful contribution. We’re here to stay.”

talk [towns] by bill beggs jr.

In a perfect 1950s TV world, boyfriends arrive at girlfriends’ houses with flowers. In today’s imperfect world, a woman fences her mom’s jewelry to get cash for her boyfriend. Brittany Rae Harper, 24, of Ballwin told cops she was held hostage by one man as another made off with more than $5,000 in jewelry. Harper called the police the next day to report a suspicious person outside who looked like one of the ‘crooks.’ An artist even put together a composite. Meanwhile, investigators found the jewelry at a dealer, who had photocopied the seller’s drivers license. Nobody likes their license photo—now Harper has a mug shot to hate on, too. Bank robbers must have it bad, whatever ‘it’ is. Well, ‘it’ apparently consumed a convicted bank robber who was supposed to be aboard a bus, on his way to a halfway house as a condition of probation before re-entering society. John Sarver, 55, had just wrapped up a prison sentence for robbing six banks in 2004. Instead of heading halfway to freedom, he allegedly robbed a bank in Brentwood. Sarver has been charged with first-degree robbery; his bond is $50,000. Many men may have been blissfully unaware of the new store that opened last week at Chesterfield Mall—until they got home and daughters implored daddies to make the trip: American Girl. The living dolls were out in force with toy dolls custom designed for a close resemblance. Watching little girls in the food court having lunch with their identically dressed dolls

of the

was a little eerie for some. For others, whether moms, dads or grandparents, it’s just too cute. And nobody’s gonna die from an overdose of cute. It’s taken a little more than simply shuffling around some desks for the students and staff of the private Wilson School to adjust after an electrical fire in March caused extensive damage to the library and two classrooms. Fortunately, there was somewhere for the 195 elementary pupils to go: the building that formerly housed Maryland School, which is owned by Clayton School District. Classes started April 16 in the new surroundings. Wilson School officials anticipate repairs to their building will be complete in time for the 2012-13 school year. If these two crazy-busy Creve Coeur moms already have so much trouble getting everything done at home and work, how the heck are they gonna squeeze in 20 episodes of a national reality show? Judi Diamond, a personality on country radio giant WIL 92.3 FM, teamed up with Kate Frisina on an online video blog, LipsticknLaundry.com, sharing advice and anecdotes with modern moms. The popular blog has inspired a yet-to-be-titled reality series documenting their busy lives, slated to air on Nickelodeon this fall. Someone who answered a recent employment ad in the classified section of a local publication received a check from the ‘employer,’ cashed it, and wired back an undisclosed amount, Kirkwood police say. Well, it’s just another new wrinkle

in an old, old scam, cops say. The check was no good. The employer did not exist. And the prospective employee was left holding the bag. Cops note they’ve seen such scams in real estate ads, but this was their first experience with the ruse from an employment angle. Cops reiterate: Never wire money to strangers. And, always wait for a check to clear before attempting to draw from it; once in your account, those funds are your responsibility. Cops reports that at least one other Maplewood business has fallen victim to the scam in which some knucklehead comes in claiming he’s paid in $5 rolls of dimes and wants to exchange four of them for a $20 bill. It takes gall to stuff 48 pennies in a paper dime sleeve, with one dime at either end as camouflage. (This ain’t new math: Four times 68 cents, or $2.72, subtracted from $20— a cool profit of $17.28! Or, $10.03 more per hour than the minimum wage, $7.25! Great work if you can get it? Um, no...) As his Republican presidential campaign continues to sputter along on fumes, the publicity Newt Gingrich generates is kind of sad. He’s only drawn more attention to his eyebrow-raising marital background by pitting former wives against current daughters. He suggested we build a permanent base on the moon—why not just make the dead orb our 51st state! In a recent visit to the Saint Louis Zoo, he swung by for a private audience with some penguins. One nipped him on the finger. He accepted first-aid: a small bandage for the wound. There were no

reports of damage to his ego. How drunk is too drunk? Legally, a blood-alcohol level of .08. Police say the driver who killed a bicyclist in February measured more than three times that. Emily C. Hagan, 30, of Kirkwood, was booked and released April 19 after posting 10 percent of a $25,000 bond for first-degree involuntary manslaughter and DWI; she had been arrested after the crash but released pending charges. Samuel Scott, 19, was struck within a block of home while returning from work at Dewey’s Pizza. Requisite questions include: Where was Hagan drinking before the crash? Who served her? Who was with her? Well, how about this: What if someone visibly impaired got offered a free cab ride home, no questions asked? Three young ladies who put together a film on race relations as a project at Webster Groves High School were delighted that they received an A, but were flabbergasted when the film won a national prize from Princeton University. For Colorblind, which they put together the summer after their junior year, Jamie Garland, Hannah Davidson and Katie Ribant won a $1,000 prize and the opportunity to visit Princeton and discuss their work at a symposium. Central to the film is their visit to Memphis, Tenn., and the Lorraine Motel, the site of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination and now the National Civil Rights Museum.

[ TT Trivia ] On the day King was assassinated, April 4, 1968, what happened to the proprietor of the motel where he had been meeting with other civil rights leaders? The first correct email answer we receive at towntalk@townandstyle.com will win an exclusive Town & Style tote bag! Last issue’s answer | Designed by architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel, the Gateway Arch is 630 feet tall.

[ The Kids Are Alright ] When a group of Kirkwood youngsters in grades one through 10 decided to help others a couple of years ago, they started an organization called Kids Who Care. “During the holidays for the last few years, they pulled wagons from door to door around their subdivisions, collecting enough food to feed 100 families,” says Nellie McMiller, who mentors the group with two other adults. Led by officers Molly Hooks and Jake Hibbard of Nipher Middle School, Hannah Mitchell of Robinson Elementary and Charlie Hooks of Kirkwood High, the group recently participated in Komen Race for the Cure and sold pink lemonade afterward, with all proceeds going to cancer research. “They also collect toys and clothes for needy families and visit nursing homes,” Miller says.

Get to know ] Emily Rauh Pulitzer of the Central West End

WHAT I DO Curator, art collector and philanthropist. I’m also founder and chair of Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, now celebrating its 10th anniversary with In the Still Epiphany, an exhibition featuring nearly 50 works from the collection I built with my late husband, Joseph Pulitzer Jr. It runs through Oct. 27. AND NOW FOR

SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT The exhibit focuses on

paintings, sculptures and works on paper that show domestic inhabitants and scenes. Artists include Picasso, Matisse, Bonnard, Paul Klee, Lucio Fontana and many more. These pieces are juxtaposed with African, Asian and pre-Columbian and Neolithic decorative and ritual objects. But instead of merely hanging and displaying the works, artist Gedi Sibony has chosen and arranged them to create a flow of experience that is in itself a work of art. It’s a resonant dialogue between objects and the space they inhabit. Sibony has remarkable sensitivity to light and space and is extraordinarily attuned to the nuances of architect Tadao Ando’s building. It’s a new, unexpected way of looking at and encountering art, and that’s what the Pulitzer Foundation is all about. NOT JUST ANOTHER MUSEUM I’m a strong supporter of big museums. In fact, I’m an honorary trustee at Saint Louis Art Museum and a life trustee at the Museum of Modern Art. Huge museums make a wonderful cultural contribution, but sometimes the art gets lost and the viewer is overwhelmed. We started the Pulitzer Foundation so people could have a personal, creative experience with art in an intimate space. It’s a place where ideas about art, architecture and culture are explored, encouraged and cultivated. ORIGINS I’ve been privileged to live with wonderful art and architecture my entire life. I grew up in a Bauhaus-style house in Cincinnati, with parents who collected modern art. When I took an art history class at Bryn Mawr, I knew I wanted to study art in depth. I spent a year at L’Ecole du Louvre in Paris, then served as assistant curator of drawings at Harvard’s Fogg Art Museum while earning my master’s at Harvard. I moved here in 1964 as curator of the Saint Louis Art Museum. AESTHETIC TOUCHSTONES I’m always inspired and challenged by Ellsworth Kelly and Richard Serra, both of whom I’ve known and whose work I’ve commissioned. They take the art of the past in new, meaningful directions.

BEST & WORST THINGS ABOUT LIVING IN ST. LOUIS There are all kinds

of possibilities here, paired with cultural and educational institutions of great quality. On the downside, the divisions between and within the city and county hinder progress. FOR ART’S SAKE Great works belong in the public sphere. It’s impossible to solve problems without creativity. In turbulent times, art offers new experiences and reveals possibilities. It’s Shakespeare the world remembers, not petty political squabbles.

NOW by judy goodman A visit to the St. Louis Mercantile Library is more entertaining than an afternoon movie—and a lot more educational. Located at University of Missouri St. Louis, this is the oldest general library west of the Mississippi River. It’s easy to become absorbed there for hours, thanks to the wealth of information and artifacts, much of it about our nation’s westward expansion. Founded in 1846 by civic leaders, businessmen and philanthropists in the downtown landing area, the library was one of the only public places at the time to preserve and display the history of our region’s growth.

The library’s educational and cultural mission was to expose users to its collections, which concentrate on the history and development of St. Louis and of the American rail and river transportation networks. Thousands of photographs and millions of pages of manuscripts detail the natural sciences and technology, world travel and social sciences. The John W. Barriger III Collection was established in 1984 to focus on the history of the American railroad and is considered one of the largest and finest in the United States. Named after the famed 20th-century railroad executive, the collection contains 40,000 books, plus primary manuscripts and photographs. The Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Collection was created in 1985 and includes more than 10,000 books and 75,000 photographs. From its inception, the library’s founders were committed to documenting the relationship between St. Louis and inland waterways, especially the Mississippi River. Also stored at the Mercantile are the clipping and photo files (morgue) of the St. Louis Globe Democrat, an original manuscript by Auguste Chouteau

remembering the founding of St. Louis, rare books, original engravings, fine art, and a complete set of Birds of America Audubon prints. Twentieth-century prints were often artists’ methods of conveying messages about political, social and economic concerns. In 1986, The Mercantile Library received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to further its culturally significant inventory. This is also the place to learn about topics like the fur trade, slavery and abolition, and Native American tribes. Everyone is welcome to use the Mercantile Library at no charge. In 1998, it moved from 510 Locust St. to its own building on the UMSL campus. You never know who you might run into there; patrons include academic scholars, film producers, exhibit specialists, news media, publishers, museum staff, government and law enforcement agencies, genealogists and authors. [ It seems Santa Fe has more art galleries than anywhere else. Indeed, our guide claimed Santa Fe is second only to New York in art sales. Embarrassingly, I was more impressed with the town’s thrift shops, where designer labels are strangely less expensive than Western wear. At Kowboyz, for example, I purchased three shirts from Calvin Klein, Perry Ellis and Alfani for a grand total of $25. In the same store, three pearl-snap Western shirts cost $30. ]

[ Who is the greatest shortstop in major league history? According to Bud Harrelson, shortstop for the 1969 Miracle Mets, it’s Ozzie Smith. In his new book, Turning Two: My Journey to the Top of the World and Back with the New York Mets, Harrelson writes Ozzie “could be both flashy and basic…I always said to Ozzie, ‘I’ve never paid to get into a baseball game, but I’d pay to watch you play.’ And I meant it.” ]

[ This is getting crazy: in recent columns, I noted St. Louis-style provel pizza is now on menus in Scottsdale and New York. Since then, several readers notified me the 2011 cookbook by PBS’ Lidia Matticchio Bastianich includes provel pizza. I verified and, sure enough, a recipe for “St. Louis pizza…inspired by several visits to Imo’s” is on page 87 of Lidia’s Italy in America. However, Lidia’s recipe calls for equal parts cheddar, Swiss and provolone, but no provel. Close, but not the same. ] 16 |

You can say it with candy, but by the time the box gets passed around, there’s usually not much left for Mom. You can say it with flowers, but they don’t last long. “So if you’re looking for an enduring way to say ‘thank you’ to your wife, mom or grandmother this Mother’s Day, consider adding a piece of fine jewelry to the mix,” says Joe Genovese of Genovese Jewelers. Mother’s Day sales are always brisk, he reports. “People assume Valentine’s Day is our busiest time, but the weeks leading up to Mom’s special day rank No. 2 in sales, right after the Christmas season,” Genovese says. Powerful emotions associated with motherhood often cause temporary lapses in judgment, pressuring normally tasteful shoppers to make overly sentimental choices at the jewelry counter, he adds. “There’s a lot of cheesy ‘Mom’ jewelry out there. But everything we make at Genovese is something your wife or mother will wear with pride because she wants to, not just because you gave it to her!” Classic gifts such as diamond studs, tennis bracelets and eternity rings are top sellers for every holiday, including Mother’s Day, and Genovese offers them at prices ranging from $500 to $50,000. “But if you’re looking for something a little different this year, we’re doing stunning rings and pendants featuring children’s birthstones surrounded by diamonds,” he says. “And if you’re overwhelmed or undecided, our experienced sales staff can help you choose a piece Mom will treasure.” Husbands, in particular, spare no expense when it comes to showing the mother of their children how much they care. “The most lavish Mother’s Day gift we ever sold was a 10-carat diamond ring for $200,000,” Genovese recalls. But fine jewelry need not break the bank. “We have an amazing array of beautiful, affordable choices,” he says. “And we’ve created a large collection featuring stones set in non-tarnishing Argentium silver that starts as low as $60.” Established in 1981 by Joe’s father, Michael, Genovese Jewelers offers 7,000 glittering square feet of baubles. “Because more than half our inventory is custom-designed and made on-site by our team of bench jewelers, we’re able to offer unique pieces at a lower retail price,” Genovese explains. “We can turn around a custom piece in less than a week.” The showroom now carries more than $5 million in inventory and offers complete in-house design, manufacturing and repair services. “High-quality jewelry never goes out of style and, when properly cared for, grows even more beautiful and meaningful over the years,” Genovese says. “Like a mother’s love, it lasts long after the kids have grown up and left home. And when you pass it along to family members, you’re keeping amazing memories alive.” Genovese Jewelers, located at 12460 Olive Blvd. in Creve Coeur, offers a stunning selection of jewelry for Mother’s Day. business [IN]sight Mom’s Originals ] by catherine klene Taran Hensley had more than a few doubters when she announced she and her mother were going into business together. “I heard ‘You’re going to sell pretzels?’ so often,” she says, laughing. “Friends and family were hesitant at first. I was 25 when we started Mom’s Originals. For me to be the salesperson and have our business be taken seriously was a big challenge.” Mom’s Originals is the story of a mother-daughter team taking lemons and making... well, a salty-sweet, gourmet treat. The company began when Jody Hensley (whose company title is Mom with a capital M) started selling her caramel-wrapped, chocolate-dipped pretzel rods at local craft fairs. It didn’t take long before someone offered to market her wildly popular treats. Taran, who had been recently downsized out of her corporate marketing job, stopped her mom short. “When she told me someone wanted to sell her product, I said, ‘This is what I do. How fun would it be to do this together?’” Taran recounts. “You don’t realize what your kids know after college,” Jody admits. “I’m constantly blown away by how smart she is. That’s been one of the biggest surprises and pleasures for me.” Taran and Jody set clear guidelines before launching Mom’s Originals. Most important, they wouldn’t let the business come between mother and daughter or their family. “Part of why it works so well for us is because I have nothing to do with production, and she has nothing to do with sales and marketing,” Taran says. “I don’t step on her toes, and she doesn’t step on mine.” The Hensleys officially went into business in December 2007—and watched the economy bottom out a year later. Despite an unfriendly business environment, Taran says Mom’s Originals offered a unique story and an affordable product. The pretzels are available at local coffee shops for around $3.50. “We have a product that is so different, and it’s a food item, too,” she says. “In times like this, people want something a little indulgent. Maybe they can’t go out and spend money on a nice dinner, but they can grab a treat on the way to soccer practice.” Taran also began to pursue corporate clients, landing some St. Louis whoppers like the Cardinals and the Fox Theatre. Today, the Mom’s Originals client list includes Harrah’s Casinos in Las Vegas and the Baltimore Orioles. “Our St. Louis clients love our product so much, they’re telling their coastal counterparts about it. Those were the clients we knew we wanted,” Taran says. “We knew they would give us longevity. We have a no-fear attitude. Big company executives are people, too; they just have a cooler job title.” That no-fear attitude and Taran’s business savvy has seen Mom’s Originals product line expand to include gift boxes, custom corporate packaging and even petite pretzel business card attachments. The company is also a certified Women Owned Business. “A lot of larger companies have requirements to meet for using minority-owned vendors,” Taran says. “Having that certification fills their need. And the pretzels are delicious, so who wouldn’t want them?” For Jody, the best part of this business—aside from professional athletes, politicians and celebrities enjoying her pretzels—is Taran. “I’m the luckiest mom in the world to work every day with my daughter, and I have such a supportive husband, too,” she says. “I’m one of the luckiest people I know.” Jody and Taran Hensley PHOTO BY bill barrett

It took Kaylene Cohen three months to convince a manager at a luxury car dealership to hire her. “I can’t blame him; I had absolutely no experience selling cars,” Cohen says. Newly arrived from Australia, she was working as a manager at The Gap in Chesterfield. But she loved cars. “So did my father. He died when I was 4, so maybe cars were my way of keeping him close.” She finally wore the manager down and got a job selling BMWs. She admits it wasn’t always easy to make her way in what was still a male-dominated profession. “The guys were friendly enough, but cautiously skeptical. They didn’t think I’d last long,” she says. Within 18 months, she was one of the top 100 BMW salespeople in America. By the time she left the dealership 14 years later, she was general manager of Land Rover, Porsche, Audi, Cadillac and Fisker. “I had 147 employees and was a mother to them all,” she says fondly. She recently moved to St. Louis Motor Sports, where she oversees Aston Martin sales. Cohen, who lives in Creve Coeur, came to St. Louis in 1997 when her then husband got a job at Boeing. Divorced 10 years, she has three children who range in age from 16 to 31. “I always dragged them around to car shows when they were little,” she says. “My granddaughter is almost 2 now, so I expect I’ll be dragging her around soon!” She enjoys selling beautiful, expensive automobiles. “Let’s face it, no one needs a luxury car. Most people buy them to celebrate who they are and what they’ve accomplished, and it’s great fun being part of that.” She excels at marketing to women. “They’re often treated like they’re invisible when they walk into dealerships, even though they influence more than 80 percent of new-vehicle purchases. I treat women with respect. If a lady comes in with a spouse or boyfriend, I’ll shake her hand first.” She never takes an aggressive approach with clients, male or female. “I don’t appreciate being pressured, so I don’t pressure others.” She not only markets to women, she hires them. “Moms are the best workers,” she says. Yes, sometimes women need a few days off when their child has chicken pox, she notes. “But they come back and work even harder, because they’re so grateful to have a boss who understands exactly what they’re going through.” ~ tony di martino

“That finishing touch for you and your home”

Judith Gurley’s mother made sure her daughter was never without a sketchbook and pencil growing up. During family vacations, summers or just ordinary moments, Gurley was encouraged to develop an artistic eye. “My mom was very artistic, and my dad was very mathematical,” she says. Gurley completed medical school at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her surgical training at University of Chicago. During a craniofacial fellowship at Washington University in 1999, she performed neonatal and adolescent reconstructive surgery. The fellowship prompted an interest in adolescent breast reconstruction. “Teenage years are formative years,” Gurley says. “They just want to wear normal clothes. They don’t want to buy size 14 shirts with size 2 bodies. What I always told the parents is that children should be able to grow up and not worry about their breasts. Unlike a lot of things, breast deformities are something we can fix.” Gurley has had her practice since May 2007. While the medical community today tends to be evenly divided between men and women, plastic surgery remains a largely male-dominated specialty. “I’m definitely in the minority, but it doesn’t bother me in any way,” Gurley says. “I hate to say I’m successful because I’m a woman. Rather, I have a good eye, and I think that’s my best asset.” She is also the mother of three: Adam, 12; Mary, 10; and Will, 8. She and her husband Brian chose to wait to have children until after her residency and fellowship. “That way I had the time, energy and ability to focus on the career and kids,” she says. “Having kids is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I have a very supportive husband and father to my children who supported my dream from the beginning. Having children helps me be a better doctor; I can relate to moms and kids.” Gurley hopes her success as a businesswoman and surgeon inspire her children to pursue their own interests, as her parents encouraged her. “The most important thing is to educate yourself and choose a career that never feels like a job,” she says. “Doing something you love is much more fulfilling than anything else you can imagine.” ~ catherine klene

Brigitte Mineo has closed her restaurant only one day in the four years since she launched it with her husband, Paul. Shortly after it opened, Paul’s battle with cancer took a turn for the worse, eventually sending him to the hospital for nine months until his death. The day Paul Mineo’s closed was the day of his funeral. “The restaurant is really what kept me going through it all,” Brigitte says. “Paul taught me how to run operations from his hospital bed. There was a short time when I considered walking away, but I’m so glad I didn’t. Most of the kitchen staff have been here since the beginning; we’re like a family” she says. When the restaurant first opened, Brigitte had planned to be the hostess, while her husband ran things. Paul’s parents, John and Anna Mineo, own John Mineo’s in Town & Country, and Paul grew up in the business. “Paul had opened several restaurants before and was the one who really wanted to do this in the beginning, ” she says. “Then I was a single mom, running a restaurant with no experience!” Now another restaurant veteran and family member, ‘Uncle Benny,’ leads the kitchen staff, and Brigitte is in the front of house. “I’m there every day, and if you come in two or three times, I’ll know you. I know all my regulars, where they like to sit, what they like to eat, even which server they prefer.” The menu hasn’t changed much since the opening, and neither has the decor. There’s even a dish named for the fearless leader. ‘Brigitte Pasta’ is penne with either chicken or shrimp, mixed vegetables and a creamy Cajun sauce. “We never take anything down off the wall. We just keep adding things!” she says. “We have the same photos and posters on the wall that Paul and I picked out in 2007. The Godfather poster is extra special because my husband was godfather to seven children in his life.” The memories she created with her husband, right down to the very name of the restaurant, make it a very special place for her family. “I love when one of our live musicians sings Frank Sinatra,” Brigitte says. “It reminds me of when Paul would sing Fly Me to the Moon.” Recently, Brigitte’s brother, Michael Clark, has come on board as the general manager, giving her “a few nights a month” off at home with her 10-year-old son, Giovanni. He hasn’t yet joined the family business; he has dreams of being a major league baseball player! ~ elle madras

Dr. Teresa Knight, Women’s Health Specialists of Saint Louis Each month, a woman’s ovaries produce several cysts, one of which creates and releases an egg. The egg either grows into a baby or passes through, triggering a menstrual period. In PCOS, no egg is released and the cysts just stay there. Hormone levels stay high, creating problems. It’s a common diagnosis in women between 20 and 40. When we take in excess calories, blood sugar can outpace insulin production and overwhelm body systems, leading to irregular heavy periods, infertility and elevated triglycerides and testosterone levels. We become insulin resistant, gain weight, develop cystic acne and male-pattern facial hair, all tied to our metabolism of simple sugars and in most cases, obesity. In addition to birth control pills to help regulate hormones and menstrual cycles, a drug called metformin can decrease blood sugar levels and help weight control. Dr. Valerie Ratts, professor of OB/Gyn and Infertility, W.U. School of Medicine In young girls with PCOS, irregular periods, acne, facial hair growth and weight gain can have profound emotional impact. Insulin resistance interferes with the normal signals to the ovary, causing it to produce more male hormones and suppressing ovulation. That increases weight gain, which increases insulin resistance in a vicious cycle. Typically, PCOS management is a lifelong issue related to weight. Even thin PCOS patients may need to follow a diet low in simple carbohydrates, because of their risk for Type 2 diabetes. Data suggests patients who achieve normal weight can reverse some of PCOS symptoms, including diabetes, irregular periods and infertility.

[ treating menopausal symptoms ] In 1900, the average woman’s life expectancy was 48.3 years. She was programmed to die before menopause became a problem. Now that women are living nearly twice as long, they sometimes need help to compensate for shifts in hormonal status. Dr. Poppy Daniels, OB/Gyn and hormone specialist Eliminating triggers for hot flashes, including caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods, can help some women, as can taking preparations like black cohash, fish oil and red clover. But many women need hormone replacement. Bio-identical hormones can be a safe alternative. I monitor patients closely, replacing only what is needed and using low doses of well-absorbed hormones. Negative publicity has made us afraid of hormone replacement, but the issue is not the hormones; it’s the route of delivery. Oral estrogen goes through the liver, increasing risk for clotting, elevating triglyceride levels and promoting insulin resistance. Oral progesterone breaks down in the

gut and is not well-absorbed. The transdermal route, in which hormones are absorbed through the skin, bypasses those problems. I use topical estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone when necessary. Dr. Kathy Maupin, BioBalance Health Many women believe if they can just withstand the symptoms of menopause for a year or so, they will be through with it. Not true: many menopausal issues are permanent. The dry vagina that causes painful intercourse doesn’t change. Hot flashes and insomnia often stay, as does dry, lax skin. Much of the focus of hormone loss has been on estrogen, but the ovaries also produce testosterone, an important substance for female well-being. It keeps muscles strong, bones thick and minds sharp, repairing the brain, reducing cholesterol and elevating the mood. Testosterone is also responsible for sexual libido. Testosterone replacement can cause facial hair, but it’s easily handled and a small price to pay for the benefits. Hormones can be replaced safely in a variety of ways, including gels, patches, creams, time-release pellets injections or vaginal tablets.

[ underactive thyroid ] In almost 5 percent of individuals older than age 12, the butterfly-shaped thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone. The condition, called hypothyroidism, affects more women than men, increasing in incidence as we age. “We’re more likely to have hypothyroidism if it runs in our family, we’ve had radiation to the face or neck, a recent pregnancy, or a history of an autoimmune disorder like Type 1 diabetes or lupus,” says endocrinologist Dr. Daniel Gaitan of West County Medical Specialists. The most common form of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition that causes the body to attack the thyroid and prevent it from making enough thyroid hormone, Gaitan says. Symptoms may include fatigue, cold intolerance, dry skin, hair loss, frequent irregular menstrual periods, constipation, weight gain and fluid retention. Diagnosis is by physical exam and blood tests, like thyroid stimulating hormone levels. “Treatment of hypothyroidism is very simple: oral synthetic thyroxine in a daily dose based on a person’s age and weight,” Gaitan explains. Periodic blood tests determine if dosages should be adjusted to maintain therapeutic levels, he adds. “Hypothyroidism may not be preventable, but it’s easily managed with proper care.”

[ endometriosis ] The endometrium is the cell lining of the uterus that either provides food for a developing fetus or sloughs off with each menstrual period. But in some women, those cells travel outside the uterus, causing problems. Dr. Octavio Chirino, chair of OB/Gyn, Mercy St. Louis The endometrial cells outside the uterus respond to hormones in the same way as those within: by bleeding and shedding, which causes scarring in the pelvis. Endometriosis is common, affecting 6 to 10 percent of reproductive-aged women. Women with green or blue eyes or freckles and those with a family history have a higher incidence. The most common symptoms are general pelvic pain, pain with periods, painful intercourse and infertility. Endometriosis can be hard to diagnose because the non-specific symptoms overlap with ovarian cysts, primary menstrual cramps and inflammatory bowel disease. Differential diagnosis is made through tissue biopsy; there is no non-invasive test. The treatment of choice is getting pregnant to stop the cycles or using birth control pills continuously to suppress ovulation and atrophy the tissue outside the uterus. Lupron injections calm flare-ups by putting the body in a pseudo-menopausal state, preventing ovulation but creating menopause symptoms. But with either method, the condition can come back if treatment is stopped.

[ we laugh, we leak ] After childbirth or as they age, women can be plagued by the problem of stress incontinence: urine leakage with exercise, coughing, sneezing or laughing. “It’s a common condition caused by weakened pelvic muscles that support the bladder and urethra,” says Dr. Ed Levy of M etropolitan OB/Gyn. Many women assume nothing can be done. “But a quick, effective surgical fix called a sling procedure can completely restore quality of life.” During the 25-minute outpatient operation, Levy, who specializes in the procedure, makes a 1-inch vaginal incision and two tiny skin incisions. A lightweight, 1/4-inch polypropylene band is threaded through the vaginal incision to support the urethra, and then anchored between the urethra and vagina. “In the hands of an experienced surgeon, the procedure is 90 percent effective and appears to be permanent in correcting stress incontinence,” Levy says. “The rate of complications is less than 2 percent, and even those are easily correctable.”

Dr. Jodie Rai, Women’s Health Care Consultants The earlier we treat endometriosis, the more we can prevent scarring and infertility. The goal is to avoid surgery, if possible. But if medications like birth control pills, Lupron or progestin don’t work, surgery may be necessary. Through tiny incisions, we can look inside the abdominal cavity and cauterize visible endometrial tissue, release adhesions or inject dye to check fallopian tube patency. General inflammation may still be a problem, so medications also are needed. If women with endometriosis can stay on birth control pills between children, menopause is usually the end point of symptoms. But obese women who make endogenous estrogen, women who are on hormone replacement therapy, and women who have significant scarring may still have symptoms.

if you’re happy with your dentures, don’t read this!

The ClearChoice team of specialists provides 21st century solutions to people struggling with dentures or bad teeth.

Why SuffER With DEntuRES? For centuries, removable false teeth, or dentures, have been used to replace missing teeth. But denture-wearers report that many undesirable side effects come along with this less-than-ideal solution: Dentures are uncomfortable to wear and often slip or click; they can cause bad breath, and require ongoing and inconvenient maintenance; they often result in a weak bite, a fake-looking smile and an overly active gagging reflex. Care and comfort aside, those with dentures also are prevented from eating many of the foods and participating in many of the activities they enjoy. With today’s science, there’s simply no reason for anyone to struggle with dentures. In fact, many of the problems denture wearers struggle with can be solved in just one day* with the help of your ClearChoice team of dental implant professionals.

Denture wearers tend to struggle with: • Shame or embarrassment when smiling • Feeling limited in social situations • Maintaining a fully active lifestyle • Appearing older due to bone loss • Health issues related to their teeth

thE Solution iS DEntal implantS. Dental implants provide far better results than do dentures, because implants can prevent potential bone loss. Because they’re anchored into the jawbone, the fusion of the implant and bone provides stability, just as the natural teeth did. Implants perform and are cared for just like natural teeth! If you’re missing some or all of your teeth, dental implants can stimulate the bone, protect against atrophy and help preserve your natural facial features.

Unlike dentures, dental implants are fixed in place, perform like your natural teeth, and can last a lifetime! ChooSE a bEttER lifE toDay. Most people who choose dental implants report the decision to be life changing. Not only do dental implants look great and boost your confidence, but they can also restore you to the active lifestyle you’ve been missing. Swim, ski, laugh and sing. Give business presentations. Eat what you like. Do it all without worrying about how your smile looks, or that your teeth will slip or fall out!

I had friends who had dentures, so knowing what they had to deal with, I just refused to go down that road. ClearChoice was absolutely the best option for me! — Joseph W., ClearChoice patient

[ problem solved! ] pasty skin by lauren madras | photo by charles barnes

You are constantly barraged with mixed messages. Avoid the sun. Tan skin is beautiful. Aging is caused by UVA radiation! Pasty, pale people look unhealthy. What to do if you don’t have naturally bronze skin? Embrace the skin you’re in! Or try to. In the meantime, here are some of our favorite

ways to get pale winter skin ready for spring’s shorter hemlines.

>great gams Schick hydro silk

Let face it, in the winter, you might skip a few more shaving days than normal. In fact, hot water and shaving can exacerbate already dry, irritated skin. Now in the season of shorts and high hemlines, it’s time to start shaving again. For a few days, end your razor routine with baby oil; it’s über gentle and will help make your skin touchably soft and smooth again. Well-moisturized skin is a must before move on to sunless tanners. Lush Silk Stockings Body Tint

Urban Decay Baked Bronzer, Tarte Mineral Bronzer

Some of the fairest among us just don’t look natural with a tan, and the upkeep is expensive, time-consuming and not very fun. But sometimes, fair skin can look splotchy, pasty or uneven. During WWII, nylon was rationed, and women painted their legs with a creamy, sticky makeup that turned their sheets beige. We’ve come a long way! Lush’s solid-to-liquid formula melts with just the heat of your skin, and smooths into a sheer tint that will even out your skin tone and lend just a touch of rosy-beige color. So now we can all dare to bare even the shortest of skirts. lush stores, $9

The dead giveaway for fake tans is that they’re even all over. You actually don’t want that, even if it seems counter-intuitive. With a large brush and a good-quality bronzer dust your face, shoulders, decolletage, upper back and arms to mimic the top-down quality of a real tan. With a very light hand, draw a half-moon across your forehead and dust your nose and cheekbones. Do the same to your shoulders, upper arms and any other place that gets high-impact sun. sephora, $26 to $29

>give good face

>better bronze

Kate Somerville 360º Face

Yon-Ka Auto-Bronzant

These tiny towelettes have just enough sunless tanner for your face and throat—but buyer beware: You cannot apply these without using tanner on your body! Pale decolletage and a Mediterranean face is not what we mean when we say ‘exotic.’ The plus side: the lighter, more sensitive formula will protect the tender skin on your face and help avoid that plastic look Tara Reid and Lindsay Lohan are infamous for.

We love easy-to-use sunless tanners that are tinted to show us exactly where the color has hit, and where we’ve missed a spot. But those formulas don’t always offer the best in terms of final product—too often veering orange. Yon-Ka’s cream is high maintenance, so be careful when applying it, since once a streak develops it’s almost impossible to fix. But it’s tops at delivering a tan that’s natural for your skin type.

[Glitter Body Art

by lauren madras

There are so many reasons to get tattoos, from the aesthetic to the deeply personal, but it’s a tough decision, considering how permanent they are. The right tattoo on certain bodies can be downright sexy. But since I’m a person who hesitated even about cutting bangs into my hair, I’ll probably never be sitting down to the tattoo artist’s needle. What I do love is fanciful eye shadow, trendy shoes and wearing red to my favorite team’s games. Therefore, the Glitter Body Art offered at Jean Phillipe and Co. salon by Donna Marie was right up my alley. I knew that if anyone would hate it, it would be my mom, a big fan of pearls and turtlenecks. So I planned my butterfly tattoo in ombre glitter right before an after-work get together with her! To her credit, she laughed and commented on how fun it was—but added, “in the right place and time.” (Good thing it was temporary.) A few nights later, my girlfriends were a little more enthusiastic. It was the young daughter of a friend who had the best response, telling me I looked ‘like a fairy.’ There are several temporary tattoo designs to choose from, most 3 square inches or smaller. I picked a butterfly, after briefly considering a tribal pattern and a Chinese character. The procedure was painless—and fast. I wanted the tattoo on my shoulder (so it would be covered during the workday and at Easter Mass). Wearing a strapless dress, I laid face down on a massage table, and my shoulder was prepped with an alcohol-based solution. The design itself is a sticker that acts as a stencil for the glue, which is applied in a thin layer with a brush. The sticker is quickly removed, then colored glitter is shaken over the resulting shape. It’s more like loose-powder eye shadow than craft glitter, and the resulting design is smooth and flexible. It looked pretty for about five days, and passable for one more before I scrubbed it off. The first night, it was a tiny bit itchy and had it been easier to reach, I might have mucked it up with absent-minded scratching. Donna warned against lotions and body oils, which would shorten the tattoo’s lifespan. My skin is sensitive, but I didn’t experience any irritation or redness, and the dye in the glitter didn’t transfer to my clothes or stain my skin. None of the glitter shed, either.

No One Will Know. Everyone Will Notice. photos by thomas warwick

As an active member of the Spirit Club in high school, I wish we’d had this then! I would have invited Donna to club meetings before big games—I might have even worn one for prom! As it is, having this bit of sparkle made me feel like a kid—and starting at just $5, anyone can indulge their inner child. These temporary tattoos would be an especially fun addition to birthdays, bachelorette parties and any other time a little bit of whimsy and glamour is needed. (So, every day, for me!)

parent trap stranger danger revisited by dr. tim jordan

It’s always good for parents to talk to their kids about ‘stranger danger.’ First, they should realize that more than 90 percent of cases of molestation involved people whom the child knew, not strangers. Front page headlines in the past few years have involved coaches, Boy Scouts leaders, clergy and teachers. These are people we are supposed to be able to trust. So what’s a parent to do? For preschoolers, I say it’s the parent’s job to protect them. I would not advise talking to kids younger than 5 years old about stranger danger. I want young children to retain their innocence and to grow up believing the world is a safe place to explore and adults are friends to connect with. Of course, parents should always be present to monitor. But it saddens me when I smile at 4-year-olds in checkout lines at the store and they and their moms cringe in fear. Once kids reach around 5 years old, have conversations about boundaries and who can see/touch their bodies. Use the proper names for genitals, be matter-of-fact and be clear about what is appropriate. Give them permission to set boundaries with anyone (including grandparents, mom’s new boyfriend, etc.) about greetings of hugs and kisses. Let them define their personal space. Respect and honor their wishes, and they will be in a better position to set boundaries if an adult tries to touch them inappropriately. Teach kids to trust their intuition. Talk through past experiences when they got a bad feeling about someone or at important decision points. How do they experience this feeling? Tightening in their chest? Queasy stomach? Parents can help kids become aware of these internal alarms and take care of themselves no matter who it involves. Even if they can’t tell you exactly why they feel this way, they should know to trust their gut! Work at being a safe, fully present, nonjudgmental listener so your children feel comfortable coming to you with any worries. Make sure they know they will never be punished if they disclose any concern, and you are always there to support them. Rushed, crabby, distracted parents don’t feel available, so be sure there is enough quiet downtime every day for heart-to-hearts. Last, trust your intuition about people and situations. You might detect a weird vibe from a coach or another parent; don’t ignore your alarms. You can check things out and gather information, and it’s also OK to go with your gut feelings. Kids who are taught to trust their instincts and have permission to set boundaries with family and friends have the confidence to set good boundaries later on. Don’t focus on the dangers; focus on awareness and skills. Tim Jordan, m.d., is a behavioral pediatrician who counsels kids in grade school through high school. for more information, go to weloki.com

Forget everything you know about Mexican food and imagine delicately drizzled sauces, fussy pickled garnishes and premium meats. Those are what we found at Medianoche, the brainchild of chef Mike Randolph. The whole concept is somewhat foreign; he changes his Half & Half breakfast-lunch diner into a Mexican restaurant for dinner service. But judging from the crowds, it seems to have caught on. That could be because the food he creates at dinnertime is as impressive as the daytime fare, albeit very different. Every dish is garnished with tiny elements that not only impress, but also add bursts of unexpected flavor. The Pozole ($7) is a light stew of pork cheek and hominy cooked in a deep red, guajillo pepper sauce. Nothing like heavy-hitting Tex-Mex sauces, this had a fine, grainy texture and little heat. The dish’s pork was very flavorful, and the hominy was still slightly firm (though I prefer it softer).

Don’t miss the Atun Fresco ($12) starter (seared tuna slices). It came with a drizzle of fabulous ‘corn cream,’ a buttery puree teeming with corn flavor. A side of buttergrilled oyster mushrooms was amazing: crunchy, woody and lightly charred. Also very good is the Sopade Aguacate ($8), cold avocado soup heavily infused with lime and dotted with raw radish and cucumber. The tacos were less impressive. We sampled the avocado ($7.50) and the skirt steak ($9) varieties. Served on mini corn tortillas, I found them too plain, devoid of shredded greens, tomatoes and other goodies. The steak taco simply had chunks of meat, and too well-done at that. The veggie taco was a little better, with a big slab of guacamole and some diced red onion. For entrees, the Carpa Roja (red snapper, $17) was a beautifully browned fillet drizzled with tequila vinaigrette dressing. Dos Carnos (two meats, $19) was a delicious serving of perfectly prepared steak rounds and braised beef cheek. It was drizzled with

salsa borracha, a sauce made with long, thin, black pasilla chiles. Chiles Rellenos ($13.50) was a cheesy blend of goat and Monterey Jack stuffed into a mild poblano pepper. Its light beer-battered flour coating was far superior to the usual crunchy cornmeal variety, and a pool of mild ‘tomato broth’ added color and cut the cheesey richness with acid. Medio Pollo ($14.50) offered moist, tender, Amish-grown chicken fanned out as a tantalizing interplay of smoked dark meat, crisp-skinned white meat, pickled beets and sweet-hot mango salsa. I enjoyed the chicken, but found the salsa and mango coulis way too spicy. The flan dessert was the standard creme caramel: custard made with milk sitting in a pool of caramelized sugar. The bread pudding was kind of wet inside, through the outside was pleasantly baked and powdered with sugar and had an excellent rum sauce.

Guajillo | The bright red pepper you see strung in dried bunches at the stalls in Santa Fe; it has a piney, berry flavor and is slightly sweet. Habanero | An extremely hot chile that is small and lantern-shaped. Poblano | This is the pepper used for chiles rellenos, and it ranges from green to dark

brown/black, when ripe. They have a rich, smoky flavor and are called ancho chiles when dried.

Q| My partner plays too fast; she thinks I play

too slow. Is there a rule of thumb to determine the amount of time to play a bridge hand?

A| In golf, John Daly’s fast, ‘grip it and rip it’ style leaves too many strokes on the course. Likewise, playing fast at bridge leaves too many points on the table. Bridge is a timed event, but there is plenty of time to plan your play and execute it. Slowing down your partner at the first trick helps. If in a suit contract (you are the dummy), put the trumps down last. In a no-trump contract, put the suit led down last.

At The Gatesworth, choices are mine to make. I can stay in and cook, order room service or meet up with my friends and family at one of three unique restaurants. To enjoy casual, down-home fare, I visit the Palm Court. For a more formal dining experience, I pull up a chair at The Colonnade. And I stop by The Bistro for flatbread pizzas and other Mediterranean cuisine. In addition to the dozens of menu options, I can always ask the Head Chef to prepare something special. With flexible dining hours, private dining venues and comprehensive room service, I experience dining at The Gatesworth, My Way.

And while dropping 1930’s characters smack into the middle of 2012 seemed incongruous at times, there was something wonderfully satisfying about the morons from Jersey Shore (the whole cast makes a cameo) getting the full Moe treatment. Town& Neighborhood Kirkwood | The Camenzinds] by catherine klene The Camenzind family had no idea how much they would miss Kirkwood when they moved in 2004. Just five years later they

returned, this time to a two-story, 4-bedroom Colonial that offered privacy without isolation. Bob, a real estate broker with Secure Asset Services, and Kim, owner of White T Designs, were thrilled to be back in the family-oriented community. “We wanted a way to get out of the house without getting into a car,” Kim says. Kids Megan, 15, Jack, 13, and Cate, 11, can bike down to Tropical Moose (Tro-Mo to those in the know) or to Kirkwood Park for a tennis match with friends. “It’s a incredibly loved and livable community.”

>> Why does Kirkwood work for your family? We wanted a place with history, simplicity and character. Kirkwood has different people from all demographics. We wanted an urban feeling, but a relaxed aesthetic. I love that our kids can ride their bikes to downtown Kirkwood without us worrying. Kids can spread their wings here. >> What do you think of Kirkwood schools? Megan attends John Burroughs, but Jack attends Nipher Middle School, and Cate goes to Tillman Elementary. The people running them are concerned with academic performance and providing a safe, positive environment. The schools have actually exceeded our expectations. I think if we told Jack he had to switch schools now, he’d fight us every step of the way!

And everyone attends the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market at some point, whether for produce in spring and summer or pumpkins and Christmas trees in fall and winter. >> What’s a perfect Saturday in Kirkwood? We’d probably ride our bikes down to the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market and get a coffee or a snow cone, then ride down Grant’s Trail. [real talk ] stephanie oliver] dielmann sotheby’s international realty by tony di martino Philadelphia-born Stephanie Oliver always wanted to be an entertainer. “I loved singing, dancing and acting, but my enthusiasm exceeded my talent,” she says. She moved here after college and has lived in and around Clayton ever since. After several years in the financial world, she found the ultimate stage for her abilities: real estate. She’s been a sales associate 10 years, the last two at Dielmann Sotheby’s. She and partner Steve Lange focus on homes along the central corridor area. I always found myself going to open houses on weekends, just for fun. It finally dawned on me that maybe I could make a living doing it! I love people, and I love architecture. When the two come together, it’s a nice little moment of magic. I’d been in the business three weeks when I made my first sale, 2.5 acres in Ladue with a creek and a bridge. I was so inspired by the property, I had a golf flag embroidered with my golf-enthusiast clients’ name. They built a putting green on the other side of the creek. I still visit occasionally for putting practice. I got into the business in 2002, one of the best years for real estate, and hit my stride right away. By 2008, the stride had turned into an uphill marathon. Had I not had six successful years behind me, I don’t think I could have pushed through it. When the bubble burst, Steve and I adjusted our business approach. The stimulus credit was driving what little demand we had, and we worked it. Our average sale price went down, but our number of transactions went way up. Homes are now moving better, and buyers and sellers seem much happier. Having a degree in economics and a money management background give me the analytical ability to understand market conditions. It takes a good plan, great marketing, constant outreach and negotiating savvy to succeed in real estate. But it’s not a numbers game for me. It’s more about great customer service and getting every home sold as quickly as possible, and for the best price. Real estate is fun, but it’s hard work and lots of nights and weekends. You need to manage your time and balance your life or you’ll burn out. When it gets to be too much, I plug my iPod in and run or ride my bike. From 2008 to 2010, I was in the best shape of my life!

Who doesn’t long for the carefree days of shorts and sandals and running into the neighborhood kids exactly where you expected to find them? Every neighborhood has its own special places to see and be seen—and we don’t mean by society photographers.

1

In the hottest summer months, kids will wait an hour or more for the zany concoctions at Tropical Moose in Downtown Kirkwood. (Try the Pop Rocks. Seriously.)

2

Boardwalk Cafe, in the Old Orchard neighborhood of Webster Groves, offers classic diner fare at great prices, along with a cast of regulars that will make you feel like you’re in a small town.

3

St. Louis-style pizza, nostalgic decor and the possibility of seeing good friends, family and other familiar faces make Cafe Manhattan in Clayton a favorite for multiple generations.

Neighborhood Hangouts by lauren madras

It may not be within walking distance, but the super-clean and charming Town Centre in Wildwood is teeming with life, from the teens at the movies to the first dates at Table III.

5

Their small-batch rootbeer is a favorite all over town, but you’ll always see neighborhood kids soaking up some A/C and watching the bottleworks at Fitz’s in the University City Loop.

6

Mr. Wizard’s in Richmond Heights offers walk-up windows and a close approximation of the classic Drewes concrete. You can spot local pre-teens just hoping that cute boy in their class will show up, too.

7 8 9 10

Why should kids have all the fun? There’s nothing like a burger and a beer (and the neighborhood gossip) found at Sportsman’s Park Restaurant in Ladue.

It’s been unseasonably warm all year, which makes us more than ready for lemonade and a gourmet sandwich at Smoke House Market in Chesterfield. (Don’t skimp on the house-cured bacon!)

In Maplewood, there’s an indie vibe best embodied by Foundation Grounds, where ‘gluten-free’ and ‘fair trade’ aren’t buzzwords, they’re a way of life. Giving credit to the residents of Des Peres, the real place to be is The Lodge, for fitness and community events.

What did we miss? Write to towntalk@townandstyle.com to see your favorite neighborhood spot in ‘Hangouts—Vol. 2.’
