[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] You pretty much know the night is going to be a challenge when your mini shoulder bag, all of 6 inches wide, is searched—twice. What, exactly, did security people expect to find in there, exploding lipstick? Getting into Chaifetz Arena for an Arcade Fire rock concert apparently is harder than sneaking into the wheel well of a Boeing 767. I was there to share the experience with longtime friends who just happen to be the in-laws of a band member (really!). Once inside, it was hard not to realize this was a Happening. I mean, it’s not every day you see people dressed up as—well, I’m not sure. What would you call someone wearing Blue Man Group spandex from head to toe, only in green? There were a fair number of guys dressed as girls, and girls dressed as ballerinas, brides, felines and more. Masks were everywhere, and green wigs were so numerous, they hardly seem worth mentioning (same for pink wigs). Oh, and a fairly convincing skeleton was on stage filming the concert—right after turntablist Kid Koala scratched his way through a number called ‘Skanky Panky’ during the pre-show. As you probably can glean, our little group of boomers raised the median age by a decade or two, but I’d say we held our own—not easy, considering the concert was nearly two hours long and apparently you’re supposed to stand the whole time. There was, however, some comic relief when I went out in the lobby to get bottled water. The vendor twisted off the top and as I reached out for it, she said, You can’t take the cap with you. I explained that I needed the cap to keep the water from spilling in the pitch-dark arena (at $4.25 a bottle!). Well, we’re not supposed to ... but as long as you promise not to throw it. Really? Do I look like someone who would throw bottle caps at the stage? Maybe I should be flattered. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

COVER STORY

EPWORTH CHILDREN & FAMILY SERVICES]

by tony di martino

“I WAS BORN INTO CHAOS,” Leoma Carter says. Her mother was a heroin addict who ended up in prison. Leoma bounced from foster home to foster home and was suspended from school for aggressive behavior and seemingly uncontrollable rage. “Every adult I trusted had given up on me,” she says. “By the time I got the call from Epworth Children & Family Services, I had almost lost hope.” Today, she has a 5-year-old son, works full time and maintains a 3.3 GPA at Saint Louis University. She enjoys a mutually respectful relationship with her mother, who is now sober. And she volunteers at Epworth’s teen drop-in center. “I want to help struggling individuals, just like Epworth helped me.” Epworth provides essential support services to troubled youth from birth to age 25. “These kids have severe mental, emotional and behavioral issues, often rooted in neglect and physical, sexual or emotional abuse,” says CEO Kevin Drollinger. More than 7,000 youth and their families turn to Epworth each year. “We’re committed to keeping families together, preventing abuse and neglect, and encouraging self-sufficiency in at-risk youth.” Epworth’s scope ranges from short-term emergency shelter and a 24-hour hotline for troubled kids to long-term legislative efforts in support of foster children and families. Services include residential and day treatment programs, education and special education, counseling, family reunification therapy, case management, and foster family recruitment and training. Nationally recognized for its transitional and independent living programs, Epworth is part of the St. Louis Aging Out Initiative, which provides education, training and advocacy for young people who leave the foster care system. For 150 years, Epworth’s philosophy has helped young people and their families overcome adversity and thrive. “Every child has unique strengths,” Drollinger says. “We offer an innovative, holistic and comprehensive treatment approach that helps young people discover and build on their inherent strengths. By tailoring our services

to each family’s unique needs, we help them focus on solutions and communicate more effectively. Our goal is to help families break through obstacles and build brighter futures so they can function successfully and contribute to society.” Helping kids and families requires community support. The Epworth Children & Family Services Annual Charity Polo Match takes place June 7 at Kraftig Polo Club in Defiance, Mo. Honorary co-chairs are Christi and Billy Busch, hosted by St. Louis Benefit Polo. The family event features a fast-paced match between the Kraftig team, captained by Busch of William K. Busch Brewing Co., and the Wells Fargo Advisors team, led by Seth Barnes of the financial services firm. Kid-friendly activities include barbecue, horse-drawn wagon rides and divot-stomping. “Supporting at-risk youth and their families makes a huge difference throughout our region,” Drollinger says. “Everyone wins when at-risk kids discover their potential and lead useful, productive lives.” Just ask Leoma, now 29. “I am forever grateful to Epworth for helping me see all the good things in myself and what I could become.”

“ filthy rich

phraseology [ freyz • ŏ • lō • gy ]

Let’s talk dirty, shall we? The term ‘filthy rich’ has its source in 16th-century England and the phrase ‘filthy lucre.’ A Middle English word meaning monetary gain or profit, ‘lucre’ was first linked with the word ‘filthy’ in 1526 by William Tindale: “Teachinge thinges which they ought not, because of filthy lucre.” After that, money was often referred to by the slang term ‘the filthy.’ But leave it to the good old USA to coin the phrase ‘filthy rich.’ Sources differ as to when the two words were first used together, but an article in a 1929 edition of The Lima News critical of those who profited from people forced to sell their homes cheaply during the Great Depression referred to “our stock-gambling filthy rich.” In those days, there was definitely a whiff of dishonorable gain about the phrase. Today, though, it has shaken off its negative connotations and simply means ‘extremely rich.’

years, a group of women who used to be mostly strangers are now dearest friends. “Christine Berg, a good friend of mine, was a neighbor, and we thought a book club was a good way to meet with people socially and discuss books,” says Kathy Jay. “Each asked a friend to join, and that friend in turn asked a friend. Remarkably, the original group is mostly still intact.” The club has two criteria for the books they read: each must be available in paperback to keep costs down, and it has to be a book no one in the group has previously read. The women favor classics and historical fiction, but will read just about anything that is intellectually stimulating. But no matter the genre, discussion always brings the women closer together. “I don’t think there’s anything we don’t know about each other, because you bring your own perspectives and experiences to the discussion,” Jay says.

WHEREVER THE RUN TAKES YOU

ABOUT THE BOOK Linda Lawrence Hunt’s Bold Spirit recounts the story of Helga Estby, a Norwegian immigrant who walked from Spokane, Wash., to New York City with her daughter in 1896. Estby’s story was lost for a century because it not only challenged contemporary rules of feminine decorum, but also enraged her family, who accused her of abandonment.

[ opinions ]

>> “In the telling of Helga Estby’s walk across America, Linda Lawrence Hunt gives readers a long list

of issues to contemplate, from pioneering and the suffrage movement, to the impact of familial silence and feminism in today’s world.” — ELIZABETH MILLER

>> “I see Helga as a role model, and I admire her gumption and grit. The book raised interesting

questions for our group, including whether women are better off today than they were in 1896, what secrets we have kept from our children, and whether we have written down our life story for our children to ponder.” — CHRISTINE BERG

TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.

Is it the Wild West out in Chesterfield? Some might think so, because bulletproof vests are now available to the three board members of the Monarch Fire Protection District, which has one of the thorniest relationships with its firefighters union anywhere. One recent disagreement is over the rehiring of a firefighter—as assistant chief— who was among those fired in the wake of a gender discrimination suit a few years ago. The two female firefighters who filed the suit won, and in upholding the decision on appeal, the judge described the district’s working environment as abusive. But board members reportedly say that Cary Spiegel, the new assistant chief, is a man of integrity who is committed to looking forward. (This is not the same board that fired the four firefighters in 2011; new members since have been elected.) Meanwhile, Spiegel and his chief also have vests near their offices. Madison County, Ill., is the horseradish capital of the USA; Las Vegas the capital of debauchery and decadence—I mean, gambling; Louisville, Ky., the horse racing capital. Here, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis is lobbying to have the Gateway City officially dubbed the ‘National Chess Capital,’ and in so doing has brought to bear some major political heft from the Show-Me State. Located in the Central West End, the St. Louis-based nonprofit has retained the public relations firm of former U.S. Sen. Jim Talent and the lobbying firm of former Missouri Rep. Earl Thomas Coleman. The resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives, H. Res. 169, was introduced by U.S. Rep. William Lacy Clay Jr. and at this writing has 28 co-sponsors. U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill has introduced a Senate version of the resolution that has but one co-sponsor at present. Lobbyists hope to beef up support

OF THE

in both houses. Our region is chess-rich, indeed, what with the national champ collegiate chess team being castled at Webster University. (Hey, one of the original buildings even looks like a castle!) After being ferreted out by authorities, the hacker at De Smet Jesuit who slowed down and otherwise messed up online communications at the high school changed tone significantly. The culprit, an unidentified student self-proclaimed as ‘De Smet Internet,’ shifted from somewhat menacing to quite apologetic: The nefarious mask of Anonymous at first used as a profile picture on Twitter was replaced by a teddy bear. We’ll have to see whether school administrators and law enforcement officials are forgiving in turn. We aren’t sure that ‘Aww, shucks, what a cute little stuffed animal’ is a strong enough sentiment for folks to ignore what essentially is a cyber crime. The law—and most parents—aren’t likely to smile about that offense in this day and age. A fixture in Frontenac for a half-century—nearly as long as the city itself has existed—Shriners Hospital for Children will relocate its operations to a brand-new facility in the Central West End by next April. (The hospital on Lindbergh Boulevard opened about 10 years before Plaza Frontenac, just to the north, was a gleam in developers’ eyes. It is the second location for the Shriners, who first established a hospital here in 1924.) As is the case with Shriners Hospitals throughout the country, it has been committed to helping children with catastrophic orthopedic illnesses regardless of a family’s financial resources. Under construction on grounds of nearly 4 acres, the new hospital is slated to open in the CWE sometime during April 2015, on the BJC HealthCare campus on Clayton Avenue between Taylor and Newstead. There will be three operating rooms, 12 patient beds and rooms for family members awaiting the results of outpatient surgery. Researchers on one floor will investigate orthopedic anomalies and genetic bone diseases. Our fezzes are off to the Shriners, whose benevolence in working toward cures for deadly childhood diseases is an inspiration. The Pioneers of Kirkwood High will be in the swim soon, and in a big way. The Earl E. and Myrtle E. Walker Foundation has donated $10 million toward a new aquatics complex at KHS to be called, fittingly, Walker Natatorium. Design for the facility is set to begin soon, with groundbreaking this summer, and hopes are for the project to be completed by the 2015-16 school year. In addition to providing a place to train and compete KHS water polo, swimming and diving

CREVE COEUR

FRONTENAC

teams, the natatorium will enable the school to add water safety to the physical education curriculum. At least three generations of Walkers have attended KHS, and the foundation has been a longtime supporter of the school. In 1993, it donated funds for a commons area that encompasses the school’s theater lobby and an orchestra pit, and in 2007 it initiated a campaign in support of new science facilities. What could you do if the cops were trying to arrest you? Here’s one approach: If you can’t fight ’em, bite ’em. This is what Maplewood’s finest accused a woman of doing when they tried to arrest her. They had arrested her companion, who allegedly displayed a gun in a dispute over a parking spot at the Maplewood Commons shopping center. (The complaint came from a couple with a baby who apparently were trying to park until they saw the gun, which naturally trumps ‘I got here first.’) Cops report they saw a holster in the woman’s vehicle, and concerned there may have been another weapon, at first tried to coax her outside. But she refused, and allegedly became combative, trying to kick and bite the officers, who say they had to subdue her with a stungun. An attorney for the woman has complained, among other things, that the cops used excessive force. He may pursue a suit … depending on the outcome of her resisting arrest charge.

Write-in candidates never win, right? Wrong. Bill Nolan didn’t expect to be sent packing. But the mayor of Sunset Hills was upended by Bill Furrer, a write-in candidate who also didn’t think he had much of a chance against the incumbent. Especially since Furrer didn’t make his plans known until less than two weeks before Election Day. He received 53 percent of the vote, in essentially a one-issue race. Residents here must be either big supporters of carpooling or big detractors of new convenience stores. Two commuter lots at the Interstate 270 and Hwy. 30 (Gravois Road) interchange were on their way to becoming a Quik Trip, a step Furrer is dedicated to halting. Politics can be, well, ugly. Five U. City firefighters have been suspended without pay for three months because they appeared in a city council hopeful’s campaign photo. But it’s illegal in Missouri for first responders to participate in political campaigns while on duty. Although those pictured may not have been on duty, they were dressed in work gear and a fire truck was in the photo, which was, unfortunately, reprinted in a campaign flyer. There has long been friction between city hall and the union over contracts and staffing, and the U. City police and fire departments threw their support behind write-in mayoral candidate Steve McMahon, whose main platform was a promise to get the departments what they needed. Shelley Welsch, the incumbent, handily won reelection last month. As far as the recent conflict is concerned, a union rep pointed out that the suspended firefighters weren’t dressed in U. City gear. Well … for that matter, it also wasn’t clear whether the fire truck was from U. City. At any rate, it brings to mind the old adage about the two topics to avoid: religion and politics. Instead of going to prison for the 1999 robbery of a Burger King, Mike Anderson settled down in Webster Groves, married and started a family. He went to church. And he has stayed on the right side of the law since he was supposed to have reported to prison in 2002, when his appeals ran out. But a clerical error had worked in his favor, meaning he slipped through the cracks—actually, through the bars of a cell, if you will. A few months ago, the system finally caught up with him, and he has been in prison ever since. His lawyers sued, contending the state’s error means that the time Anderson has spent outside should be considered time served. In some very good news for Anderson, Chris Koster, state attorney general agreed. To a point. Anderson will remain in the joint to serve two years of the original 13 he was given. Reportedly, he is not resentful and remains positive that everything will turn out OK. Now, if this is not a story that warms the cockles of your heart, maybe it gets you somewhere in the sub-cockle area.

Harris-Stowe State University has named a new president. DWAUN J. WARMACK, former vice president at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla., starts July 14. He was chosen for his ability to build enrollment and maintain high academic standards, according to the search committee that selected him from more than 70 candidates. He holds a doctorate of education from Union University in Jackson, Tenn. He replaces Albert Walker, who stepped down after two years in the post.

Wings of Hope pilot DON HOERSTKAMP recently flew a small, single-engine Cessna 206 to Tanzania, where he delivered health-care supplies and other aid to indigenous tribes. The non-stop journey took Hoerstkamp, 67, nearly 20 hours. The Ballwin resident, who became a flight instructor after serving in the U.S. Air Force, founded Phoenix Aviation. Wings of Hope, a locally based aviation charity, delivers aid to more than 1 million people in 47 economically disadvantaged countries annually.

It housed German opera and music programs until anti-German sentiment caused it to shut down during World War I. Three wolves belonging to the endangered Mexican species were recently released into the wild, thanks to a cooperative effort between St. Louis’ Endangered Wolf Center and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. All three were either born at the center or fathered by a wolf born there. Prepared for wild release over several years, they now roam the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in east-central Arizona and New Mexico. The Wolf Center, in Eureka, Mo., was founded by the late Marlin Perkins and his wife, Carol, in 1971.

TECH CHALLENGE—JOHN BURROUGHS

HEARD IN THE [ HALLS ] by stephanie zeilenga

FIRST TECH CHALLENGE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

St. Louis students have been busy reaping awards at FIRST Robotics competitions in the state, regional and international levels. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) aims to interest kids in pursuing science- and technology-related careers. Clayton High’s Robohounds was the only participating team in the competition (April 24 through 26 at the Edward Jones Dome) that had previously won two regional titles—one from St. Louis and another from Arkansas. Westminster Christian Academy’s Team 4256 won a spot at the final event after placing second in the St. Louis Regional Competition. Webster Groves’ team did particularly well in the competition, winning the third-place Inspire Award, one of the highest honors given to teams that best embody the program’s mission. Additionally, team CLAYTON member Brandon Sanders won the FIRST Dean’s List Finalist Award, which is given to only 128 students each year for leadership, technical skills and embodiment of the program’s values. Other area schools represented at the competition include John Burroughs, which ranked first in its division, and Principia Upper School, which ranked 36th.

FORSYTH SCHOOL

Forsyth School won first place in the elementary category of the 2013-2014 Green Schools Quest competition. Each of the 39 participating schools had to plan and implement effective and affordable sustainability practices. After the class of 2012 was inspired by a math project to make a gift of sustainability to the school, a 105-panel solar array, funded by the class’ doughnut sales, was mounted on the gym, cutting energy costs for the building by about 25 percent. Forsyth School also expanded its solar education program to include all grade levels.

THE 7TH GRADE FOUNDATION

More than 80 St. Louis-area students participated in the Poetry on Their Terms event at the Missouri History Museum April 16. The students, who had previously won contests in their own schools, read their poetry to the audience. CLAYTON HIGH SCHOOL

Councillor Duncan Sandys, former Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster, England, and great-grandson of Winston Churchill, extended a personal invitation to the Clayton High School Symphonic Orchestra to perform at London’s New Year’s Day parade next year. In March, Sandys visited the school to listen to the orchestra and meet the students and staff who will travel to the U.K.

WORDS No matter how old we get, the wisdom we learn from our mothers stays with us. Several St. Louisans shared the best advice

their mothers ever gave them.

“Bloom where you’re planted.” I think this is actually a Mary Engelbreit quote. It carries special meaning for me because I ended up taking my passion— organic farming in the community — around the world before nurturing it to bloom in the place where my family is from, and where I’m now planted: North St. Louis County. - MOLLY ROCKAMANN

PARENT TRAP ADULTS ONLY] by dr. tim jordan MY WIFE AND I SPENT A RELAXING WEEK on the beaches of Kauai recently celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary—no kids allowed! Now, with ours all grown up, that is not particularly noteworthy, but it’s important at every stage of a marriage to take some alone-time for Mom and Dad, even when a couple has little ones. It’s a way to renew the marriage and keep it fresh and passionate. We bought a time share on our 10th wedding anniversary at a time in our lives when it was a big stretch to do so, what with three young children. We did it as a way to make ourselves take a vacation together every year or two because we believed we needed that time away from the kids as a couple. We didn’t want to hit the empty nest stage of our lives and look across the breakfast table at our spouse and say, Who are you? I have seen far too many couples enter that chapter in life and discover that they have drifted dangerously apart; they have been so focused on the kids and their jobs and the mortgage that they have lost touch with each other, a little bit at a time. This distance and lack of connection so easily can result in divorce. Meanwhile, during our week in Kauai, I was struck by the number of young couples vacationing with their children, some even with babies and toddlers! I understand that many families today contain dads and moms who work a lot of hours, and they often feel guilty about the lack of time they have to spend with their children. Or they might just want more time together as a family. But I worry that there is little time left over for them as a couple. I felt like going up to them and giving them permission to hang out for a week without the kids, to rekindle the old passions and fire they once experienced during the honeymoon phase of their relationship. I wished they could take long walks on the beach and catch up with each other (and not just by talking about the kids). Maybe even dedicate some time during which they refrain from talking about children or work, and instead really focus on each other. They could set intentions for how to keep their marriage alive and vibrant back at home. And they could fall in love all over again, reminding themselves why they got together in the first place. I’ve even fantasized about a law that prohibits couples from bringing children to the islands. These are places for love and romance; if you want to take your kids on vacation, go to Disneyland or a water park. Please leave Hawaii for sweethearts.

ON THE DAY THEY BECAME HUSBAND AND WIFE, Meredith Conrad and Travis Redmon stood on the balcony of the Chase Park Plaza overlooking a blue sky filled with floating balloons from the Forest Park Balloon Race. Four years earlier, Meredith, who moved to St. Louis as a child, met Texas-born Travis in Dallas at a college football game. Travis proposed in 2012, when the pair traveled to check out Richmond, Va., where he was to do his medical school residency. The couple exchanged vows at St. Francis Xavier College Church, which Meredith attended growing up. The officiating priest was Meredith’s great-uncle, who also married her parents and grandparents. Although it was pure coincidence that the Balloon Race took place on the same weekend, it added to the memorable evening. “The Chase has these big, beautiful terraces with views of downtown, the Arch and Forest Park,” Meredith says. “Everyone came to the reception early so they could watch the balloons take off.” The evening included an elegant meal of petite filet and grilled salmon, a late-night snack of Ted Drewes—and a little impromptu Irish dancing by the bride. “I grew up Irish dancing in St. Louis, and there was a group of guests who had danced with me as a child,” Meredith says. The Redmons live in Richmond, Va., where both work at VCU Medical Center—Meredith is a nurse in the pediatric ICU and Travis is in his second year of residency in emergency medicine.

[ EPWORTH CHILDREN & FAMILY SERVICES POLO MATCH BRING THE FAMILY AND HEAD to St. Charles County on June 9, to watch Kräftig and Wells Fargo Advisors battle for the win in one of the most uncommon public sports in St. Louis: the fast-paced game of polo, featuring world-class players and horses. The charity match is held at Blue Heron Polo Club in Defiance, Mo. There are lots of kid-friendly activities, including wagon rides and divot stomping. Proceeds benefit Epworth, an organization that provides direct services to more than 7,000 at-risk youth ages birth to 25 and their families each year. Honorary co-chairs are Christi and Billy Busch, and the event is hosted by St. Louis Benefit Polo. Contemplating what to wear to a polo match? Actually, there are lots of choices, from dresses to pants to walking shorts in lightweight fabrics. Casual dress silhouettes can be long or short. Bright colors help deflect the heat. Have fun with accessories, like a big floppy hat and a great pair of sunglasses. When selecting shoes, remember that you’ll be walking on dirt and grass. High heels will get stuck in the ground easily. And be sure to wear strong sunscreen.

[ tricks of the trade ] IT OK OR BEST TO STICK WITH A LIGHT PALETTE?

A: Darks, especially black, are seasonless. You’ll find black linen, strictly a summer fabric, in the stores everywhere. And dark colors are slimming, especially in a skirt or pant. But for the practical purpose of staying cool, I recommend wearing a light color palette as much as possible. If you feel more comfortable with dark on the bottom, say in your pant or skirt, that’s fine. You can pair it with a light or even bright color on top.

COVER STORY

PARC ] PROVENCE

by tony di martino

PARC PROVENCE, a community specializing in the care and well-being of

seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions that cause memory loss, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. “No matter what stage of dementia our residents are experiencing, we treat them as individuals, with dignity and respect,” says administrator Tracy Cecil. “Just because they’ve received a diagnosis doesn’t mean their journey has ended. It’s simply a new chapter. Our expert caregivers develop a unique plan for each resident based on their cognitive level, health, habits, experiences and interests. We maximize their quality of life in every way possible—physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.” Parc Provence honors the past by celebrating it in the present. “Working closely with residents’ families, we create moments of joy based on whatever was most meaningful to them before they were diagnosed,” Cecil says. “Each has a unique life story we strive to honor.” When two longtime residents celebrated their 54th anniversary by renewing their vows, for example, “We made sure they had the same flowers and music they had at their original wedding—even their best man and maid of honor attended!” she recalls. “It was a special day for all of us.” The community is renowned for its innovative approach. “Without interaction and purposeful activities, physical, emotional and cognitive health rapidly decline,” Cecil notes. “We focus on what residents can still do, not on what they’ve lost. We make the most of their abilities at every stage by offering more than 80 personalized programs each day designed to keep them mentally and physically active as long as possible.” If residents always loved art, music or gardening, they can continue those pursuits at whatever level works for them, or they can explore new interests, she explains. Residents are grouped with others of similar cognitive abilities and

needs, she adds. “This gives them a vital sense of independence and engagement with others. We build on their strengths and abilities, and we do it in a secure, warm, homelike environment.” The community’s 10th anniversary celebration includes a party for residents and their families, as well as renovations and additions at its Creve Coeur campus. “We’re updating some of our living and common areas and also building a billiards and game room for residents,” Cecil says. “Everything we do is a response to their needs. We didn’t have Wi-Fi 10 years ago, but we do now!” Parc Provence has been considered a leader in its field for more than a decade. “Our person-centered focus stands as a benchmark for memory-care communities locally and nationally,” Cecil says. “Families want their loved ones to have the best possible care. They can rest assured, no matter what stage of dementia their relative is experiencing, we are making the most of their journey. Everyone has potential. Everyone has the right to a meaningful life. That’s what we’re fighting for. We hope to continue helping residents and their families for many decades to come.”

BRIDGE WITH BL♠ND

To paraphrase a popular game show, Name things we count: A. Count our blessings B. Count our money C. Count at bridge

4. If declarer held the ♠ A, the ♥ Q, and ♣ K J

The No. 1 answer is ‘Count at bridge.’ As players, we know counting comes into play with each hand. Defensive conventions and signals help us draw accurate conclusions. East on defense did not have any artificial help to defeat this month’s hand. The bidding: N E S W 1N Pass 3N Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: J ♥

7. One heart four spades, down one! Well

Cover the South/West hands and see if you can defeat the contract. NORTH ♠ 7 6 5 ♥ 5 4 ♦ A Q J 9 7 6 ♣ A Q WEST EAST ♠ A 8 4 3 ♠ Q J 10 9 ♥ J 10 9 8 2 ♥ A 6 3 ♦ 8 4 ♦ 3 2 ♣ 3 2 ♣ 9 8 6 5 SOUTH ♠ K2 ♥ KQ7 ♦ K 10 5 ♣ K J 10 7 4 West led the ♥ J, 5 from North, A from East, and declarer the 7. East did not woodenly return his partner’s suit. He paused for thought. 1. Should he continue ♥s, playing partner for K J 10 9x and taking five heart tricks to defeat the contract? 2. Was it right to make a potential damaging spade shift? 3. East avoided disaster by counting the high card points available in declarer’s hand.

(13 total points), he would not have opened 1 NT.

counted! Yes, South could have held the ♠ A instead of the ♠ K (17 points), but then the contract could not have been defeated.

tip of the day] Q. Kenny, when on defense, counting can be

daunting. We don’t seem to have time to count all possibilities with each hand. Is there any way to help us with this conundrum?

A. Yes. Using defensive conventions and carding agreements will alleviate these issues. Present count, the rule of 11, and Journalist Leads are a good start.

HARD TO BELIEVE Morton’s prime steakhouse is 20 years old. It was a red-letter day when the premium chophouse came to Clayton, the first restaurant in town dedicated solely to prime meat, as I recall. Then, as today, meat lovers were fascinated by this elite food, the ‘best’ 2 percent of all beef available in the U.S., promising the most juicy, tender and flavorful steaks. Now, 20 years later, others have joined the prime-meats market, but Morton’s has held its own as a place where you can have prime steaks, attentive service and that formal, clubby atmosphere steakhouses are renowned for. Prime meats are in a cost category all their own, but for meat lovers, it’s a special treat they’re willing to splurge on. If you haven’t been to Morton’s for a couple of years, you’ll be surprised by the expanded menu. Once the bastion solely of filet, strip, porterhouse and ribeye—with maybe a fish dish thrown in for the odd meat-eschewer—there’s a lot more to choose from now (even chicken and pasta).

I started with a favorite, the Morton’s salad ($11), a mix of romaine and iceberg, chopped egg and anchovy dressed with creamy bleu cheese. Do not order this for one—it’s a big salad with great flavors, especially after the server puts coarsely ground black pepper all over it. My only complaint is that the lettuce pieces could have been torn smaller, necessitating my cutting the salad with a steak knife. Impressively, my astute server promptly replaced the used knife. For dinner, I ordered a Mixed Grill ($48), a combination plate of small portions that allows you to savor three dishes instead of one massive steak. And it comes with a few asparagus spears, always a plus at Morton’s, where steaks are strictly a la carte. There are three different Mixed Grills; this one included Grilled Shrimp, Bacon-Wrapped Scallops and a 6-ounce filet. The filet was perfectly cooked, with a light sear on the outside and good texture and flavor inside. The scallops were stellar, flavored with the smoky bacon and browned very well. Three grilled shrimp added

[ food • ŏ • lō • gy ]

another taste and texture element, and a side of sautéed Brussels sprouts ($11) was excellent, with the sprouts appetizingly browned and dotted with bits of browned onion and crisp bacon. A stand-out dish was the Chilean Sea Bass Filet a la Nage ($45). The buttery fish had a delicious sauce of lemon, butter, cream and white wine dotted with diced tomatoes and asparagus chunks. The combination worked exceedingly well: the softened tomatoes soaking up the cream, the asparagus steeped in butter and a generous amount of premium crabmeat adding its sumptuous flavor to the bass. For dessert, the Double Chocolate Mousse ($11) didn’t quite live up to my expectations. While it was chocolate-y and creamy, it could have been sweeter, especially considering how heavy meals here can be. Bring on the sugar!

[ chef chat ]

A LA NAGE | Translating to ‘in the swim,’ this means poached in a flavored liquid. CHILEAN SEA BASS | Not bass at all (or from Chile), this is a deepwater fish from very

cold seas in the Antarctic. Technically the Patagonian Toothfish, it was first served in Chile and due to its tremendous popularity in the 1990s is now endangered. The large fish (about 200 pounds) can live up to 50 years.

funny and surprisingly entertaining. Leslie Mann, as much-maligned wife Kate, is thoroughly annoying at first, since her character is so unrealistically flighty and clueless. But she grows on you as she turns to Carly, ‘the mistress’ (Cameron Diaz), for advice and companionship. An attorney, Carly is an unwitting adulteress conned by serial philanderer Mark King (Nikolaj Coster-Walda). And she’s Kate’s polar opposite: strong, cunning and sexy. By sheer force of will (and peskiness), Kate succeeds in befriending Carly, and eventually the two of them resolve to get even with Mark. But not until they track him to the Bahamas, where he’s vacationing with his latest hottie, a 20-something Amber (model Kate Upton). Situations arise—many of them stupid, some of them funny, a few hilarious. Kate’s klutzy pup, a Great Dane, adds to the humor, as does Nicki Minaj as Carly’s secretary and Don Johnson (Miami Vice heartthrob) as Carly’s New Age-y dad. Diaz, as usual, is totally appealing with her crystal blue eyes, great facial expressions and humorous delivery. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? This one can wait for the DVD. —D.W.

Empowering women to take control of health.

COVER STORY

PHOTO : L.O. IMIJRI

WOMEN’S HEALTH SPECIALISTS

by tony di martino

THE WOMAN SAT ON THE EDGE OF THE EXAMINING TABLE,

tears in her eyes. After a recent laparoscopic procedure to repair a painful condition, she was now healthy. So why was she crying? She paid her co-payment and pre-paid her deductible. The procedure was pre-authorized by her insurance company. She did everything she was supposed to do, and so did her physician. But when the bill came, the insurance company refused to pay. The woman had neglected to read the fine print on her policy that said, Pre-authorization is not a guarantee of payment. “It happens all too often,” says ob/gyn Dr. Teresa Knight, CEO of Women’s Health Specialists. “You pay your premiums and think you’re fully insured, but if the insurance provider changes its mind about covering a procedure, or if it goes bankrupt like HealthLink of Illinois did, or if you haven’t met your deductible, you get stuck with the bill.” The insurance industry these days is like a never-ending round of Who’s On First. “They say they’ll pay for an annual exam or preventive care, but what’s actually covered varies from plan to plan,” Knight says. “You used to go in for a checkup with a list of questions, and if you had a specific concern, say, a lump on your thyroid, your doctor could check it out. Now you have to schedule, and co-pay for, an additional visit.” The Affordable Care Act can add to the confusion, she notes. “Anthem participates in the exchange, but its Pathway and Pathway X plans aren’t accepted by many hospitals and practices in Missouri,” she says. “Most patients didn’t know that when they bought it.” Insurance and health-care costs have spiraled so far out of control that many patients can’t pay for uncovered, but necessary, treatment. “And if doctors don’t get paid, we can’t keep our doors open and help patients,” Knight says. Increasing numbers of physicians

DR. LAURA EASTEP, DR. TERESA KNIGHT AND ANGELA MISURACO, WHNP

are being forced out of private practice because they can’t afford it, she notes. What’s the solution? Knight envisions a future in which insurance covers only catastrophic cases and major surgery. “Everyday health care could be covered by individual health savings accounts, where patients pay out-of-pocket on a realistic payment plan,” she explains. “By removing insurance companies from the process, health-care fees will return to realistic levels.” Meanwhile, Knight urges patients to become educated consumers who know exactly what they’re getting for their insurance dollars. “Read your policy carefully, especially the fine print. It’s your responsibility to know if a procedure is covered, as it’s your responsibility to pay your medical bills. These corporations profit whether you get healthier or not. Doctors dedicate their lives to helping patients, but the basic trust between doctor and patient erodes when a corporation becomes the middle man. That’s why I listen to my patients’ frustration with their insurance companies— because I know the companies won’t.”

[ IT’S A GIRL THING by mary konroy

It’s been 44 years since Our Bodies, Ourselves was published. The landmark book encouraged women to learn about their bodies and take ownership. Local experts continue the tradition by informing women about key issues that impact them.

OSTEOPOROSIS DIAGNOSIS BRENDA KINGEN

CHIROPRACTIC PHYSICIAN, KINGEN CHIROPRACTIC WELLNESS CENTER

Many women are scared into taking osteoporosis medications. The most common ones are Fosamax, which is associated with digestive issues, and Boniva, which may result in low calcium levels. There’s also a once-a-year injection of a medication called Reclast. It reduces the risk of bone fracture but may cause an abnormal heart rhythm. While these medications build bone, it’s not hard bone. It’s more of a chalky or weak version. There are three areas we focus on after a woman is diagnosed with osteoporosis: nutrition, supplementation and exercise. We find out what’s causing her body to be so acidic that it’s not absorbing calcium. We recommend vitamin D-3 supplementation; the body needs it to absorb calcium. We also recommend an appropriate form of weight-bearing exercise, such as walking or using an elliptical machine. Although it sounds contrary, stress on the bones helps build bone. It also keeps muscles strong and improves stability. Many of our patients with osteoporosis participate in our BStrong4Life training program, a medically supervised exercise program that addresses balance, core strength and bone health.

DR. JOHN MORLEY

GERIATRICIAN, SLUCARE

The first thing a woman identified with osteoporosis should do is make sure her diagnosis is correct. Physicians make mistakes. Ask to see your fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) results. It indicates fracture risk in postmenopausal women and men, 45 and older. If your physician doesn’t show you your FRAX results, take the test yourself. It’s available online. FRAX results determine treatment. If you have a 30 percent chance of a hip fracture in 10 years, then it’s reasonable to seek treatment. If you have less than a 10 percent chance of a fracture in 10 years, then you can do the basics: taking 1,000 international units of vitamin D daily and taking calcium. You don’t need huge amounts of calcium, a couple of Tums or a large yogurt will do. Take calcium at night because your calcium comes off the bone when you lie down. If you do have a risk for fracture, work with your physician to determine which medications are best for you. At this time, the treatment for almost everybody at risk for fracture is bisphosphonate, and the least expensive one is Fosamax. There’s no advantage to more expensive versions.

+ STRESSED? TENSE? MAYBE YOU SHOULD TAKE SOME SLOW, CLEANSING BREATHS—and a dose of yoga. “Yoga postures lengthen muscles and strengthen and stabilize the body,” says VALERIE LOVE, YOGA/PILATES INSTRUCTOR, ST. LOUIS JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER. “The goal is to be mentally present to the sensations in the body, and mindfully and honestly move into, hold and move out of the poses.” Studies suggest that yoga lowers blood pressure, increases range of motion and improves general strength, Love notes. “Breath, movement and diet are the three single elements that can be manipulated to improve health,” she says. “The most expensive one of these elements is eating fresh, real whole food. But movement and breath cost absolutely nothing.” Whether in yoga class or not, mindful breathing has an immediate influence on health, Love adds. “Simply by breathing more deeply, one can lower blood pressure and saturate tissues with more oxygen. It’s one of the most important elements of increased vitality.” “Be patient with yourself on the mat. Yoga is a lifelong process of mental focus and relationship with the body.”

Frequent urination in women can be part of a complex known as overactive bladder (OAB), which is described as urinary frequency, urgency and nocturia (nighttime urination). OAB can present with or without leakage, but leakage also can result from stress urinary incontinence. OAB is very common. One in three people have it—that includes men. But more women present with symptoms. It’s important to make sure there are no other medical issues, because OAB symptoms can mimic bladder cancer, stones in the bladder and urinary tract infections. There are multiple treatment options. Most people start with behavior modification. They reduce their intake of caffeine, chocolate, alcohol and spicy foods. They try acupuncture or massage to reduce stress. Physical therapy should be added to every treatment program. But it’s not good enough to just give written instructions. Patients need to know how to correctly isolate, relax and control their pelvic muscles. And for that, they need a physical therapist specialist. Almost all women stop taking OAB medications within six to 12 months. The drugs are expensive and may have side effects.

DR. JERRY LOWDER

DIRECTOR OF FEMALE PELVIC MEDICINE & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY, WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

A common cause of female urinary frequency that often goes undiagnosed is pelvic myofascial pain, also called pelvic-floor muscle spasms. These spasms give a woman a sensation of urgency and frequency and cause her to void small amounts of urine. Consequently, many patients are treated for an overactive bladder and prescribed anticholinergic medications. These medications block the nerves that control bladder muscle contractions and allow the smooth bladder muscle to relax. But the bladder isn’t the source of the problem with pelvic-floor muscle spasms. The problem is musculoskeletal. Pelvic-floor physical therapy, not medication, is the cornerstone for treatment. But it’s a different type of physical therapy. The goal is to release the trigger points causing pain that can result in spasms. Trigger points are tender areas in soft tissue that cause radiating pain. With pelvic spasm, trigger points are usually located in the pelvic-floor muscles, which are a group of sling-like muscles supporting the uterus, bladder and rectum. The pain radiates to the bladder and results in spasms that give rise to the sensation of urinary frequency and urgency.

+ OUR HORMONES RAGE DURING ADOLESCENCE. As we age, they plummet and deprive us of sleep, libido and concentration. Hormone replacement therapy can adjust these imbalances, but often the replacements are synthetic. DR. KATHY MAUPIN, MEDICAL DIRECTOR, BIOBALANCE HEALTH, thinks there’s a better way: bioidentical hormonal pellet therapy. But this obstetrician-gynecologist wants to improve more than diminished estrogen levels in women. She recommends replenishing testosterone, too. “It’s the secret female hormone,” Maupin says. “Testosterone protects us from age-related muscle and bone loss and weight gain, and keeps our minds sharp.” Bioidentical means the hormones are identical in molecular structure to hormones produced naturally by the body. Maupin uses plant-derived hormones and pellets that contain either pure powdered estradiol (an estrogen hormone) or testosterone. “The hormones are packaged into a pre-prescribed pellet size so you get a consistent dose,” she explains. “It’s inserted under the skin, in the fat of the hip where it slowly dissolves, providing a very steady hormone level—much like your ovaries did before they went into a decline with menopause.” Patients are retested for dosage levels before new pellets are inserted.

Intrauterine devices fell into disfavor in the 1970’s when the Dalkon Shield—a common IUD at that time— was linked to an increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease and a high incidence of uterine perforation. Usage fell to almost zero. They’re now making a comeback with about 10 percent of fertile women in the United States using an IUD for contraception. However, this is low when compared to other countries or continents, such as Asia, where about 25 to 30 percent of fertile women use IUDs. The braided strings attached to the IUDs were the culprit years ago. They acted like a wick that allowed bacteria to ascend into the uterus and fallopian tubes. There was also no test to detect asymptomatic chlamydia infections then. Consequently, there was an increased risk of severe pelvic infections, which led to an increase in infertility with blocked tubes and pelvic abscess. All three IUDs available in the U.S. today have monofilament (single strand) strings, which are not associated with an increase in infection. IUDs offer long-lasting contraception—three to 10 years—and are safe and cost-effective. They’re a great option for any age group, and especially for women who might have issues with compliance.

DR. TERESA KNIGHT

OBSTETRICIAN-GYNECOLOGIST, WOMEN’S HEALTH SPECIALISTS

IUDs are making a comeback for a variety of reasons: they’re cost-effective, they have an excellent safety profile, and they have a low risk of side effects. There was a very large study performed in St. Louis by Washington University called the Contraceptive Choice Project, where they offered free birth control to all the women who entered the study. Participants were able to choose their method of birth control, and IUDs had the highest satisfaction rating among participants. The average failure rate for birth control pills is 5 percent. The failure rate for IUDs is equal to that of permanent sterilization, but an IUD is completely reversible. For women who are finished bearing children or think they want to wait four or five years, IUDs are a worry-free means of contraception. It’s also a good form of contraception for nursing moms and for women who cannot take birth control pills because they have a blood clot disorder or some other contraindication.

MOTHER KNOWS BEST BEAUTY TIPS FROM MOM

Plastic Surgery

talk

with Dr. William G. Hart, Jr.

by marylyn simpson

We all grow up watching our moms moisturize, tweeze, paint and apply the products we yearn one day to be old enough to use ourselves. And when we are, we remember what she told us about beauty.

Mommy Makeover The term ‘mommy makeover’ is used to describe the procedures that can correct wear and tear on the body during pregnancy and aging. These include loss of volume and sagging of the breasts, fat accumulation in the lower abdomen, flanks and hips, and laxity in muscle walls due to the stretching of pregnancy.

My mom has had me wearing sunscreen every single day since I was a little girl ... and if it means my skin will look anything like hers does when I get older, I’ll gladly keep applying!

Her best beauty advice? ‘Smile.’ She always taught us that happiness is the key to inner beauty—that and having fun, and we Burgess girls sure know how to have fun!

Breasts: Breast procedures include augmentation and breast lift. These

are outpatient, require a general anesthetic and in most cases have a limited downtime of three to five days. Exercise can be resumed within two to three weeks, and final contour is not assessed critically for six to eight weeks.

- AIMEE KNEBEL (ASSOCIATE REGIONAL MARKETING DIRECTOR AT YELP)

- SUZY BACINO (T&S STYLE EDITOR)

aBdomen: If the main problem is excess fat and the skin quality is good, procedures such as liposuction and BodyTite can give an excellent result. Patients who have more excess skin and laxity of the abdominal wall would benefit from a mini-tummy tuck, or in some cases, a full tummy tuck. Downtime for tummy tucks is usually between a week and 10 days, with exercise resumption within three weeks. Body Contour: Excess fat deposits in the flanks, hips and thighs can be addressed by liposuction or BodyTite. BodyTite achieves skin tightening and removing unwanted fat and can be used on the arms, as well. It can be performed in the physician’s office using local anesthetic and oral sedation. Downtime for BodyTite is generally two or three days, with contour not critically assessed for six to eight weeks.

SUZY BACINO, LAURIE BURGES S ANNE AND AIMEE KNEBEL

FaCe and neCk: Skin rejuvenation can be achieved using various laser resurfacing or radiofrequency treatments. Fractora and Fractora Firm are outpatient and done under topical anesthetic. They tighten and thicken the skin. Other treatments, such as IPL, can reduce pigment change and, combined with a good skin care program, can significantly improve facial color and tone. Some patients can attain a more youthful look with injectables such as Restylane, Juvaderm and Voluma. These add volume for up to two years, correcting some signs of aging, nasolabial furloughs, mental labial lines and other facial irregularities.

SECRET lives of realtors

BY REBECCA KOENIG

THEY ORGANIZE OPEN HOUSES, RECOMMEND PAINT COLORS AND TAKE OUR PHONE CALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. BUT WHAT DO ST. LOUIS REALTORS DO IN THEIR PRECIOUS MOMENTS OF FREE TIME?

HALL ON MT. KILIMANJARO

sotheby’s Sam Hall //dielmann international realty YOU KNOW YOUR PASTIME IS INTENSE when you train for it by completing triathlons. Sam Hall, a Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty agent, spends his free time climbing mountains. “I’m a competitive person by nature,” he says, a trait that drives him to the top of peaks and local highest-selling agents lists. Hall recently reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and is itching to get back on the trail. The juxtaposition of grueling physicality and mental clarity hooked Hall on the hobby after he scaled his first mountain in Colorado. “You run the full gamut of emotions, from excited anticipation to exhaustion and doubt you can accomplish it to the exhilaration of having done it,” he says. He tackled Mt. Kilimanjaro as his first feat in the seven summits challenge to climb the tallest mountain on each of the seven continents. Wearing a large backpack and a training mask that deprived him of oxygen, Hall prepared in Forest Park by cycling, running and hiking. To discipline his lungs, he did yoga, swam and completed a few triathlons. “The best part was, right before I left, I got to start pigging out, so to speak,” he says. “I was pretty good about my diet leading up to it, but for 10 days I ate anything and everything I could find.” The physical demands were intense. “Imagine running a marathon every day for six days behind a cement truck oozing debris, uphill the entire way, eating nothing but curried meat and vegetables,” Hall says. But his training paid off: Hall was one of only a few participants who carried his own supplies and didn’t need extra oxygen. The final ascent began at midnight. “You’re hiking through the dark all night, not knowing how close you are to the top, with frozen snot on your nose,” Hall recounts. “You’re having trouble breathing because the air’s so thin. Then you reach the crest of the mountain, see the sun come up, see all the clouds so far beneath you, and it’s a surreal moment of thinking, I literally got here on my own two feet. That was worth all the aggravation.” MAY 7, 2014

Lucyann Boston // laura mccarthy

PHOTO: BILL BARRETT

LUCYANN BOSTON IS NOT SECRETLY A SUPERHERO, but she does her own version of Superman’s quick change in a telephone booth. On Tuesday mornings, her coworkers at Laura McCarthy spot her sneaking into the office in soil-stained gardening gear, only to appear minutes later at their weekly meeting looking poised and polished. Boston is both a real estate agent and a Master Gardener, activities that provide her a balanced blend of stimulation and relaxation. Boston transitioned into selling real estate after writing about interesting homes during her first career as a journalist. “I sort of had a heads up because I had seen so many different houses,” she says. “I did stories from St. Charles County to Town & Country to the city. I got familiar with a lot of different neighborhoods.” Because of her family’s background in gardening, she picked up the hobby during her free time. “My grandfather on my mom’s side was a vegetable gardener, and my mom was interested in garden clubs,” Boston says. “I grew up on a property where my dad’s dad had planted a lot of things.” Caring for hydrangeas, zinnias and veggies of all types quickly became one of her favorite activities. “Every gardener will tell you it’s therapeutic,” Boston says. “It’s optimistic: When you’re planting bulbs in the fall, you’re hoping daffodils are going to grow in the spring.” The University of Missouri extension program at the Missouri Botanical Garden offered Boston the opportunity to earn her status as a Master Gardener. There, she learned from from experts, worked with plants of all varieties and took tests to measure her knowledge. “Every Sunday night I’d be studying my botanical names,” she says. She maintains her affiliation by putting in 50 hours of volunteer work annually. That community service requirement is why Boston finds herself rising early on Tuesday mornings to work with herbs at the Garden with the St. Louis Herb Society. She weeds, prunes and waters the aromatic plants before driving to work in time for the agent meeting. And when Boston’s two worlds collide, her coworkers don’t mind at all: “One time we had to cut back rosemary, and I took a whole load of rosemary to the office,” she says.

SOMETIMES A WONDERFUL HOBBY ORIGINATES from tragic circumstances. Jennifer Guffey immediately knew something was wrong with her newborn son when his yellow skin seemed more severe than a typical case of jaundice. Doctors diagnosed him with biliary atresia, an inflammation and blockage of the bile ducts that leads to cirrhosis of the liver. “For the first two years of his life, I was in the hospital with him,” Guffey says. “I would sit there and Google the disease, but I found nothing hopeful.” So she decided to make a website full of information and positive stories to help families in similar situations. After a liver transplant, her son now is thriving, as is BA Aware, the nonprofit Guffey founded to support biliary atresia research. Helping families find homes is Guffey’s favorite part of the real estate business, and a similar impulse drives her to devote countless hours to managing BA Aware. “It’s been a great way to give back,” she says. For the organization’s main fundraiser, Art For A Cure, local artists donate original pieces to be auctioned off to support liver transplants and biliary atresia research at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Guffey expects the next art auction, July 25 at Blind Tiger in Maplewood, to attract more than 250 people. BA Aware had Dec. 1 designated National Biliary Atresia Awareness Day, during which its website solicits online donations. Guffey is proud to report that last year, the group registered more than 100 people to be organ donors. And so many people are interested in its mission that the nonprofit now has branches in Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles. Seeing her 4-year-old son live a normal life (with the help of medication) and hearing positive feedback from other families makes all Guffey’s efforts worthwhile, she says. “I get emails every week saying, ‘Thank you for putting this site together, this is so helpful. That’s unmeasurable to me. I very vividly can remember the feelings when sitting in that hospital. If I can alleviate that for anyone else, I’ve served my purpose.”

SPACIOUS

by rebecca koenig | photos by suzy gorman | staging by kristen galleberg

For seven years, Stacey Goldman has enjoyed her spacious Ladue home, the perfect place to host a family party or just watch the light change through the skylight windows. T&S | What attracted you to the house? SG | At the time, it was the bones of the house: the windows and high ceilings in all the rooms and the open staircase element. The house was built in 1980 and had been on the market for almost a year when I originally looked at it. It reflected 1980s decorating from top to bottom. It was empty, and I think that kept people from seeing its potential and getting that cozy concept. It needed those updates and upgrades people are looking for, like a hearth room. Moving the laundry room upstairs and creating a hearth room area were really important to me. T&S | When you redecorated, what feeling were you hoping to attain? SG | I think it was more about being livable and comfortable, not museum-like or having rooms people felt they couldn’t sit in. It’s not any one particular style, it’s more about comfort. T&S | There is a lot of natural light in the house. SG | The skylights were here when we moved in. All six of them were blown out by a storm on two different occasions. That goes toward the comfort element and the amount of natural light the house gets. It always felt really open and airy and bright.

T&S | How do you manage the 2 ¼-acre yard? SG | It’s nice to have the bigger yard as long as you don’t have to mow the lawn on your own. I kind of wish the house was placed a little differently on the property; my pool backs up to my neighbor’s pool. I’ve been working with a landscaping group for 1 1/2 years now, taking areas back to native plants. Hopefully it will be a little less maintenance-heavy, more interesting, and attract butterflies. The landscaping in the front of the house is mostly native except for the boxwoods. We get a lot of water on the property and are trying to create a rain garden so it doesn’t dump so quickly into the Deer Creek reservoir. We’re getting into some gardening. Having all that space makes it easy. Coco, my dog, loves to run around in it. The screened-in gazebo between the patio and the pool is probably the nicest feature. We’re getting ready to add a pergola over the outdoor kitchen. T&S | Tell me about the wine cellar. SG | It’s a great thing to have on-site. It’s just one of those things there’s endless opportunities to learn about. It had been designated as a cedar closet, and we ripped that out and put in all the racking systems. It holds 2,500 bottles of wine, but we don’t have nearly that many. T&S | You have quite a large basement in addition to the wine cellar. SG | There’s a full bedroom, full bathroom, a half bathroom, a full kitchen, pool table area and a TV hangout area. There’s also a full workout room down there. There are full windows above ground. It was the ultimate place for my now-sophomore in college to spend his high school years. Once he left for college, the carpeting got ripped up.

Opposite: Pines frame the large yard of Stacey Goldman’s Ladue home; Goldman, fiance Tim Greenwald and dog Coco This page, from top: formal dining room; refinished staircase; light-filled living room

T&S | What’s your favorite feature? SG | The kitchen. I love that it has the double island ... with a prep sink. It’s great during a party: you can fill it with ice and throw wine bottles in there as well. The eight-burner stove with double oven makes it possible to get a lot of cooking done and host holidays. We just hosted a Seder for 34 people, and we can get all the dishes in those four dishwasher drawers. It’s something I truly, truly enjoy. We have an open-glass-door refrigerator, so people can see into your fridge. The large tub sink is great because you can fit all your pots and pans in there. I think from a flow perspective it works really well. T&S | Do you entertain often? SG | I enjoy having both friends and family over. It doesn’t have to be totally formal. I have definitely hosted a lot of large family parties: a couple of engagement parties for cousins, and surprise 70th and 80th birthday parties. It’s a great party house. I’m getting remarried in September, and we’re going to have the reception here. This page clockwise from right: wine cellar, skylights, kitchen

HOMEWORK] DEAR HOMEWORK,

We love our 40s-era Georgian in Creve Coeur and recently re-landscaped the front yard. To our eyes, there is still something missing. Is the front door surround (which is rotted and needs replacing) too modest? Would a circle drive or parking area help? If it’s useful, we have two additional matching light fixtures that could be used on brick columns. How could we improve the first impression of our house without taking it over the top? ———QUESTIONING IN CREVE COEUR

DEAR QUESTIONING IN CREVE COEUR,

AFTER

BEFORE

I, too, have a soft spot for the architecture built between the wars and find your house to be a fine example of it. I particularly like the long windows with authentic shutters, tie-backs and hinges. I think you are right in your observation about your door surround—a larger and more detailed surround would better balance the whole composition. I show a taller and wider door frame that becomes the focal point of the façade. Adding wood trim is a quick and easy way to upgrade this feature without a costly porch, new sidelights or a transom window. As for the landscape and driveway, if possible, move the two tall evergreens at the sides of the front stoop about a foot away from the front door to allow them to grow taller without blocking the home’s central section. To aesthetically support these landscape features, a new circle drive with a widened parking area bordered by a low, curving yew hedge would make sense. Finishing the drive court with new brick light piers (utilizing your available light fixtures) allows the landscape to work in harmony with the refined symmetry of the architecture. To me, your initial observation about the ‘weakness of the front door’ is the fascinating aspect of your submission. It shows that homeowners can use their own eyes and sense of design to identify the weaknesses of a property and work through possible remedies. Thank you for sending this in. ———HOMEWORK HOMEWORK IS PENNED BY PAUL DOERNER, PRESIDENT, THE LAWRENCE GROUP. IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR HOME CRITIQUED, CONTACT US AT HOMEWORK@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM

[FROM THE GARDEN

®

by p. allen smith

IT GETS EASIER EVERY YEAR to find locally produced foods at farmers markets, grocery stores and restaurants. The locavore trend is essentially an effort to close the gap between consumers and farmers and to live more harmoniously with the seasons. I’m particularly fond of that last aspect because I think eating with the seasons makes for better health and a stronger connection to the earth. SEASONAL FOODS

For a quick study in seasonal foods, grow your own vegetables, herbs and fruits. If gardening isn’t your thing, there are many online sources with information about what is in season and how to prepare it. I like the interactive map on epicurious.com. Here’s a short list to get you started.

SPRING

FALL

EGGS | Eggs are more abundant in spring as the days lengthen and chickens are exposed to more light. STRAWBERRIES | Harvest strawberries by cutting the stem, not pulling on the berry. ASPARAGUS | Plants need to be eaten when young before the stems go woody. Stem thickness indicates the age of the plant.

GRAPES | Look for fully colored, plump grapes that are firmly attached to the stem. SWEET POTATO | The longer a sweet potato cooks, the sweeter it becomes as the starch turns to sugar. PUMPKIN | Choose small, thin-skinned varieties for eating. These are bred to maximize sweetness and flavor.

WINTER

PHOTO: JANE COLCLASURE

SUMMER

CHICKEN | Spring-born chickens reach full size during the summer and are ready for consumption. CORN | To determine if corn is ripe, look for brown, dry silk and see if the end is round rather than pointed. If you’re still not sure, pierce a fresh kernel. The corn is at peak sweetness if liquid comes out. BLUEBERRIES | These have a short shelf life, only about 14 days. To improve that, spread the berries out in a single layer during storage.

BEEF | Naturally grown beef isn’t a year-round product, contrary to popular belief. Grass-fed cattle are seasonally slaughtered in late fall when the meat is at its peak. POTATOES | Don’t remove the skins; they are packed with fiber. CITRUS | Look for heavy fruit, which means more juice inside. P.
