[ letter from the editor ] I recently survived another visit from my clan, during which I learned firsthand how different child rearing is today than when I was doing it. My go-to sanity saver—TV and snacks— have pretty much become dirty words. Seems that kids are supposed to get back to basics like coloring—and fighting over who had the orange crayon first. And there’s a big emphasis on ‘reading,’ which they like to do out loud and simultaneously at the age of 2 and 3—and at a pitch that ensures they can be heard by Bubby, even though she’s hiding—I mean working— two rooms away. Of course there’s always the park, a surefire distraction to help grandparents pass the time. But it has its pitfalls. These usually pertain to keeping up with active youngsters amid the temptations of slides, tunnels, swings and—most challenging—poles. Keep in mind, parks are not for the faint of heart; be prepared to climb, crawl and run after them, unless you want to face the recriminations of your child when their little ones come home battle-bruised. In retrospect, I think I did a pretty good surrogate parenting job, especially compared to what some of the other adults at the park were busy with. I don’t suppose texting or being on the cell fall into the category of quality time?

talk [towns] by bill beggs jr.

Caveat emptor, people! If it seems scams are more common, many may shrug and say “Same stuff, different day.” Ballwin residents are among those complaining recently to the Better Business Bureau about Conyers Construction Co. The BBB reports that the Fenton contractor has failed to begin projects or left them incomplete. Complaints also have poured in about SaveMore.com, a Texas-based online coupon provider that allegedly hasn’t backed up its claims. From the BBB: Never pay a contractor up front for an entire job; a third down is customary. And if you want Groupon-like coupons for products and services, pay by credit card. Chris Seemayer, B re n tw o o d ’s former city manager disgraced for embezzling nearly $30,000 to pay off gambling debts, has one less reason to yield to temptation. According to the Missouri Gaming Commission, his name has been added to a list of people convicted of a crime that involves gambling; this means he is persona non grata at any casino in Missouri. Seemayer, 52, of Fenton pleaded guilty and was sentenced last year to five years of probation, a $2,000 fine and six months of home confinement. He also must pay back the embezzled amount. As sure as irises came up in April, it must be May because farmers markets are starting to open all around the towns. Clayton’s opened May 5 and will be at 8282 Forsyth Blvd., west of Straub’s, through Nov. 3. But, did you think we’d ever make it to May? Admit it; you were among the untold

of the

multitudes who kept saying stuff like, “Some stretch of weather we’re having” all April. Weather prognosticators throughout the country’s midsection say it’s the coolest April we’ve experienced in 60 years. (Talk amongst yourselves about our warm March, global warming and the like.) Kirkwood was the biggest loser in a contest against Webster Groves this time, but Webster isn’t gloating one bit. It’s been months since the adjacent communities’ last Thanksgiving gridiron contest. Kirkwood won another town rivalry, but by losing…more weight. City employees opposed their counterparts in a 12-week weight-loss challenge that wrapped up last month. If Kirkwood ate less turkey, Webster now must eat crow. If you feel a heart attack coming on, call 911 immediately. But if it’s only a Harp Attack, call all your friends! Maplewood is hosting its third annual Harp Attack: Terri Langerak and her gang of madly innovative harpists take over the business district from 6 to 9 p.m. May 11. You may have heard Langerak or one of her compatriots playing sedately for a wedding or other highbrow event. But these folks play anything from Bach to rock. You’ll also likely hear Latin jazz as you stroll through shops, galleries and restaurants in the ’Wood. So many area municipalities have gone to the dogs recently that it’s hard to keep track, especially if you’re a dog. Rover doesn’t care; he romps anywhere. The

latest field for Fido to frolic opened April 19, just west of Olivette’s border with U. City in Irv Zeid Citizens Park at 9100 Old Bonhomme Road. Residents need only have proof that their canines are licensed, and be good citizens and clean up after their pets. As anyone who walks in public is all too aware, however, not every human is conscientious: To keep the space clean and enjoyable for bipeds and quadrupeds alike, a fee will be charged beginning next year. What if you could get nearly $5.8 million for appearing topless in a Girls Gone Wild video? At this point, Tamara Favazza of St. Louis stands to be awarded that for asserting she didn’t want quite that kind of exposure. In 2005, Favazza was 20 and at a Laclede’s Landing bar when a woman filming for the notorious operation pulled down Favazza’s tank top, exposing her breasts. Today, she’s a wife and mom who claims her marriage and family relationships have suffered. She didn’t file suit until three years after the incident, when a friend of her husband mentioned seeing the video. A judge in April overturned a jury verdict that had been in favor of the defendants. If you’re seeking a medical volunteer opportunity and have empathy for those among us without health insurance, consider the Volunteers In Medicine clinic that opened at 14395 Manchester Road in October 2011. Himself a volunteer, Dr. Maimun Baig runs the clinic with his wife, Sajjad. A project of the Islamic Foundation, the clinic serves Ballwin, Chesterfield, Des Peres, Ellisville, Manchester and Town & Country. Another VIM clinic

has served about 1,500 patients since opening two years ago in Lake St. Louis. Patients must be below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. While physicians and other medical professionals are always welcome, volunteers need not have medical experience to serve the clinic, which is open by appointment 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays and 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays. Once zucchini start producing, it seems they never stop. After they’ve been in all the salads and casseroles you can stand, and the neighbors stop politely refusing, then what? Maybe you like that sweet sound each squash makes when it connects with a baseball bat. OK, so I’m not a gardener, nor am I a chef. But Gerry Welch, along with being mayor of Webster Groves, apparently is a good bit of both. KTVI filmed Welch making her special Webster Groves Farmers Market zucchini bread to celebrate the city farmers market opening May 3. Another of our occasional advice tidbits for would-be criminals: Do not brandish a rifle at police officers. U. City resident Darius Robinson, 24, is lucky officers shot him only once in the ankle, after cops say he pointed a rifle at them during a chase on foot that started in St. Louis and ended in a U. City backyard. Robinson leapt from his car after a traffic stop at Page and Skinker avenues carrying a .22-cal. automatic that was stolen in a burglary, police say. Robinson faces charges of second-degree assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and receiving stolen property. But there is another term for what can happen to an armed suspect: suicide by cop.

[ TT Trivia ] Who is at least one other harpist known for conspiring with Terri Langerak in her so-called ‘harp attacks’?

The first correct email answer we receive at towntalk@townandstyle.com will win an exclusive Town & Style tote bag! Last issue’s answer | In Memphis on April 4, 1968, when the Lorraine Motel owner’s wife saw the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. mortally wounded by an assassin’s bullet, she suffered a fatal heart attack. (Close gets the cigar—last week, we asked what had happened to the proprietor. Therefore, “nothing” would also be an acceptable answer.)

FRIENDS OF] WINGS

by tony di martino

Grief is a long, steep road, never more rugged than when a parent suffers the loss of a child. Sometimes, the experience brings couples together in shared loss and a mutual need for love, understanding and support. But all too often, overwhelming pain and guilt push the marriage to the breaking point. Thanks to Wings, parents don’t have to take that journey alone. Since 1997, BJC’s pediatric hospice and palliative care program has helped dying children and their families cope with every phase of terminal illness. “We focus on the needs of the entire family for up to two years following the child’s death, regardless of their ability to pay,” says Friends of Wings founder Asha Zimmerman. In addition to comprehensive hospice care and innovative art therapy programs, Wings offers age-specific programs and retreats for grieving families: Stepping Stones, for children ages 6 to 12; Labyrinth, for adolescents 12 to 18; and Weavings, designed for mothers who have lost a child. New this year is Daybreak, a much-needed retreat for grieving couples. The day-long experience, held at Marianist Retreat & Conference Center in Eureka, offers support, coping skills and communication techniques for mourning parents. Activities, led by 20 trained Wings staffers and volunteers, include meditation, music therapy and building a memorial table that parents can recreate at home. “But the healing truly begins when parents share stories about their child with the other couples,” Zimmerman says. “You can actually see body language change from tense and isolated to more relaxed and open. Couples who had withdrawn from each other physically and emotionally were hugging and touching by the end of the day.” The program is free and open to any couple who has lost a child from birth to age 29. Past participation in Wings is not required. “We don’t turn anyone away, regardless of how their child passed away. We welcome parents to come back as often as necessary, to deal with every stage of grief.” To help support Wings and its programs, Friends of Wings presents a pre-show extravaganza featuring Disney’s Aladdin, July 12 and 13 at The Muny. The event includes a picnic dinner, crafts, entertainment by the Muny Kids, backstage tours and a chance to meet the characters, followed by a live performance of the musical. “We made sure the event is action-packed for parents and kids of all ages,” Zimmerman says. Christy Cole, Leslie L’Hommedieu and Laura Williams serve as co-chairs; Dierbergs and Midwest Mortgage Capital are sponsors. Losing a child is the most significant, profound loss one can endure. Many marriages crack beneath the burden of unspoken grief, compounding the loss. “But couples who share their sorrow and grieve openly are more likely to stay together,” Zimmerman says. “Through Daybreak, parents can connect with others who’ve suffered a similar loss. In doing so, they find a way to reconnect with each other.”

the[in]sider by tony di martino [ Experience Counts ] The fountain of youth must be in Olivette, home of Bob Soell. At 95, an age where most people have long since retired, Soell still works as fleet manager at Suntrup Ford in Westport. He’s been with Ford Motor Co. for nearly 65 years and is the oldest Ford salesman in the country. “I’m thinking of quitting and taking it easy...when I’m 102,” he says.

[ The Perfect Beach Read ] Missourian Kate Klise, author of several best-selling young adult books, has graduated to grown-up fiction with In the Bag, published by HarperCollins/Morrow. The lighthearted romance, about a couple of globe-hopping single parents who meet cute, was inspired when a stranger slipped a note into the author’s carry-on bag during a plane trip. “Nothing came of it, but it set off a spark.” Klise, a former Post-Dispatch columnist who also spent 15 years as a correspondent for People magazine, lives on a 40-acre farm in the Ozarks.

After a five-month international search, Lisa Melandri has been named director of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. She’ll start in August. Melandri is currently deputy director for exhibitions and programs at Santa Monica Museum of Art. During her tenure, the museum received international critical acclaim for exhibitions such as Beatrice Wood: Career Woman.

[ Honored Couple ] Fontbonne University president Dr. Dennis Golden and his wife, Monica, recently received the Crème de la Clayton Award at Clayton City Hall. The Goldens, Clayton residents since 1995, were recognized for their community work and exemplary leadership.

[ Worth Thousands of Words ] The International Photography Hall of Fame, home to more than 30,000 historical images, is moving from Oklahoma City to St. Louis’ Grand Center. St. Louis competed with Chicago and Rochester, N.Y., for the exhibition, sweetening the deal by offering rent-free space for 20 years. IPHF still needs to raise at least $1 million to create a permanent exhibition space for works that include Alfred Eisenstaedt’s V-J Day in Times Square. The move should be completed by this time next year.

[ No Place Like Home ] Hometown boy Mike Colombo has joined KMOV’s News 4 team as a reporter after two years at WHAS in Louisville, Ky. The 2004 Vianney High grad will focus on investigating consumer issues. In Kentucky, he helped expose corruption at Louisville Metro Animal Services, reported on the U.S. Senate race between Rand Paul and Jack Conway, and chronicled the Kentucky Wildcats’ march to the 2012 Final Four. “It’s great to be back, and I’m looking forward to working with the accomplished journalists at KMOV,” he says. Proud parents are Mike and Georgia Colombo of South City.

[ Supporting Students ] De La Salle Middle School recently received a highly competitive College Access Challenge Grant from the Missouri Department of Higher Education. The grant benefits the school’s Graduate Support Program, which encourages alums to continue their education.

[ Happy Feet ] Is your soul moved by jazzy tap, or do your tastes run more toward classic ballet? There will be something for everyone interested in dance May 24 through 26 when Dance St. Louis presents its annual Spring to Dance Festival. More than 30 companies from the U.S. and Canada will gather at Touhill Performing Arts Center for the event. Participants include Lula Washington Dance Theatre from Los Angeles, Flying Foot Forum from Minneapolis and Kansas City Ballet, as well as local companies Saint Louis Ballet, MADCO and Common Thread Contemporary Dance Co. Tickets are $10 per night. For more information, call 314.534.6622 or visit dancestlouis.org.

[ Changing Times ] Attorney Margo Green recently visited Fox 2 News to discuss a nationwide spike in paternity lawsuits filed by single parents. “Even here in St. Louis, we’re seeing more highly educated women who are proud and perfectly comfortable being single parents,” she told anchors Randi Naughton and Kevin Steincross. “But custody and child support issues still need to be ironed out, which is why the number of suits filed rose from 12 to 22 percent in the last decade.” Green is managing partner of Green Cordonnier & House, a family law firm in Clayton. 8|

Members | Seated: Jennifer Fosythe, Kathy Whaley, Carla Grundy Standing: Molly Clipp, Lora Castleman, Laura Putnam, Amy Calloway James, Christina Morefield About the Club | The group features themed menus each month centered around the book’s setting, or in this case, the title. Besides motherhood, the members have few similarities, which leads to lively conversation. They’ve read a wide variety of genres, from nonfiction to science fiction and a lot in between. About the Book | The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, by Alan Bradley is a mystery story with an unlikely heroine (and narrator): 11-year-old Flavia de Luce. She, her father and her three sisters live at Buckshaw, a crumbling English manor and the site of a very unusual murder. When her father is falsely accused, Flavia takes it upon herself to clear his name and untangle a complicated web of secrets stretching back 30 years.

[ opinions ] “The image of young Flavia on her bike is an iconic image of first freedom—an experience we all share one way or another.”

“My favorite scene is when Flavia finds the dead body and she feels challenged instead of terrified—which many adults would have been!”

—Kathy Whaley

—Lora Castleman

“The narrator has a child’s fearlessness. Her explorations bring the setting (the English countryside) alive.” —Amy calloway james

“The family cook, who makes the title-inspiring pie, is Flavia’s mother figure. She’s essentially a classic red herring.” —chrisTina Morefield

“Though it may not yield the most fruitful discussion, it was well-written with lots of good detail and description.” —Carla Grundy

[ the long shot ] Parkway South Senior Breaks Shot Put Record Donnell Walker’s high school principal knew he was strong; the freshman was a promising young wrestler and football player at Parkway South. So when Walker said he wasn’t particularly interested in field events, his principal didn’t take no for an answer. “He took me to practice that day, and I started throwing shot put and discus,” Walker says. Three years later, Walker has a heavyweight state wrestling title under his belt and recently set a new school record for shot put at 57 feet, 8 inches at the Henle Holmes Invitational. “I really didn’t see where it landed,” he says. “I was trying to stay in the ring. Then I freaked out.” Walker was not expected to take first at the tournament, but despite his come-from-behind victory, he’s not basking in his success. “It’s not the final throw. I know I can hit 62,” Walker says. “We’ve been practicing a long time. Everything is starting to come together, and I believe in myself.” Walker says strength only takes an athlete so far in throwing sports. Balance, timing and coordination are equally important. “There’s so much technique,” Walker says. “At the beginning of practice, coach makes me do 30 minutes to an hour of technique before I can even touch a shot.” Walker is still deciding which college he wants to attend, but he plans to use the strength and perseverance honed from athletics to study criminal justice and become a police officer. “I can probably do two sports in college, but it’s hard to leave out one. They all made me who I am today.”

talk to… [brandon straeb]

When Chaminade’s Brandon Straeb was deciding which college to golf for next year, he considered an important question: Did he want to consistently lose in a low-level D-I school or possibly be a national champion on a D-3 team? Ultimately, he says, it wasn’t a hard choice; Straeb likes to win. But before he takes his talent to Illinois Wesleyan next year, he’s got a few more high school tournaments to master and a state championship in his sights. Everyone wants to win, but your teammates are also your competition in golf. Are there rivalries?

I love to come in and win, but I love to see my buddies do well, too. Finding out they’re three under might make me play better. I don’t like to lose—except to the guys on my team. What’s the best and worst part of golf?

My favorite part is the pressure, being in front of a bunch of people and playing off a miraculous shot or posting a low score. I like coming in and being able to say to buddies that I beat them. The challenge is that it is so frustrating, but that’s why I like it. I like to achieve that feat every time I go out. What’s the best advice you’ve received?

My dad is a genius at the mental aspect. He taught me everything I know about that part of the game. You may go into the second day of a tournament playing horribly, but you always have to keep grinding. 10 |

[ stick it to ‘em ] Lacrosse Goal-Scoring Senior steps up If you give Lauren Nickson a lacrosse stick, chances are she’ll ask for the ball. And chances are equally as good she’ll take—and make—a shot on goal. The Villa Duchesne midfielder currently averages five goals a game on a newly reworked offense that Nickson says is producing some impressive results. “In our first two games we scored 10 and 17, so obviously it’s been working,” she says. The athletic senior, who also plays field hockey and basketball, took up the sport in middle school. “I love to run, and lacrosse encompasses running and is a competitive team sport; it has best of both worlds,” she says. “This is the first year I’ve actually scored this much.” As an underclassman, Nickson says she looked up to many of the high-scoring seniors, not just for their ability on the field, but their leadership as well. “As a senior this year, knowing I have to help lead the team, I try to do my best and get the wins whether that means scoring or playing strong defense,” she says. With mouth guards and lauren nickson goggles, not to mention sticks flailing about, it’s easy to compare lacrosse to a more violent sport like hockey. However, Nickson says the gear is just a precaution; most teams are respectful of other players. “Lacrosse for women is not that bad. You can’t go near the head with a check,” she says. “If somebody does hit you in the head or body, it’s usually an accident. Lacrosse is more like basketball than field hockey.” After graduation, Nickson will attend Marquette University, where she hopes to play one of her three chosen sports at a club or intramural level. She also plans to study nursing and ultimately work as a nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant. “I’ve always been really driven, and I love to serve. I know nursing really takes that to the next level,” she says.

cover story

YouthBridge Community Foundation]

by catherine klene

When it comes to important decisions, you call in the experts. And few decisions are more important than how to leave a lasting philanthropic legacy. “YouthBridge Community Foundation’s philanthropic advisers are those experts,” says CEO Michael Howard. Founded in 1877, YouthBridge assists nonprofits through community initiatives and provides advice to donors who want to give back to the community. It’s a team effort, Howard says. YouthBridge works with a client’s financial advisers and attorneys to create donor-advised funds that benefit causes close to the donor’s heart. “We help maximize the social impact the client will have on the community,” he says. “We go beyond how much you want to give and ask what you want to achieve and what legacy you want to leave behind.” Howard has a keen understanding of financial planning; he recently joined YouthBridge after several years as a financial adviser and manager of children’s nonprofits. “I always found work with children and teenagers fulfilling,” he says. “YouthBridge provided me an opportunity to combine that passion with my wealth management experience.” Howard hopes to raise $100 million for philanthropic purposes in the community in the next five years, and he plans to add to the philanthropy advising teams. YouthBridge’s advisers assist clients in their support of any charity and also can assist in converting private foundations. “A donor can accomplish many of the same charitable goals by setting up a donor-advised fund,” he says. “They are less costly to form and maintain, more private and may provide greater tax benefits.”

YouthBridge also provides funding and education to nonprofits. Each year, the organization hosts its Social Enterprise and Innovation Competition, held in conjunction with Washington University’s Skandalaris Center, where nonprofits and small businesses learn to develop business plans and long-term Michael Howard photo by THOMAS WARWICK goals. “Often nonprofits are focused on their mission, but they need guidance toward looking at their missions as a business-oriented endeavor,” Howard says. “Nonprofit status does not mean it’s OK to lose money. You still have to cover your expenses.” At the end of SEIC, YouthBridge and other community organizations award grants based on those newly formed business plans. Meds & Food for Kids, an organization that creates nutritionally enhanced peanut butter to feed malnourished children, received a combined $35,000 through SEIC and YouthBridge a few years ago. Today, it operates a $2.5 million factory in Haiti to produce the peanut butter, feeding thousands of children worldwide and creating hundreds of jobs for Haitians. “Meds & Food for Kids is a classic example of leveraging a social investment into a huge social impact,” Howard says. “That’s the type of transformational philanthropy we can help donors bring to nonprofits.”

A SPECIAL VOLUNTEER |

a belle center client learns with her therapist. PHOTO COURTESY OF the belle center

about us | Normal is defined before most of us can say the word. So when four parents of children with developmental disabilities watched their little ones shuttled away from the ‘normal’ preschoolers almost 30 years ago, they took action. “They had a desire for their children to attend a typical community preschool, but in those days there was no opportunity for children with disabilities to attend inclusive programs,” says Jodi Woessner, executive director of The Belle Center. The parents united to form a nonprofit dedicated to an inclusive environment for children with their disabilities and their families. Woessner says uniting children of all abilities in preschool classrooms benefits everyone. “The Belle Center helps children understand differences in kids and have compassion,” she says. “Inclusion proves friendship is just as possible for those children typically developing as for those with disabilities.” The Belle Center works with children 6 years and younger to develop personalized development plans at home and at school. Speech pathology services and physical and occupational therapies help children prepare for standard preschool classes with their peers. The center also partners with the Jewish

Community Center, SouthSide Early Childhood Center and University City Children’s Center to create inclusive preschool programming so all children learn together. The Belle Center currently supports 170 kids through classroom and direct therapy programs. “If a child has communication issues, the therapist will help that child develop a picture schedule so he or she can refer to it and ease transitions for them,” Woessner says. “Ideas like that help support everyone. We’ve seen kids of all abilities flourish in preschool classrooms.” Numbers don’t lie. Woessner says 96 percent of children with disabilities enrolled in The Belle Center’s preschool programs have made significant progress in health and development. The program doesn’t just help children; 88 percent of teachers who work with The Belle Center have a better understanding of developmental disabilities, she notes. The Belle Center also trains parents to advocate for their children, so they can join all aspects of community life. “Our Belle alums have gone on to be the strongest advocates in the schools,” Woessner says. “They lead the way for inclusion in schools, summer camps or Sunday schools. Their advocacy skills have forged the way for all families.”

When Libby Newport took her 6-week-old daughter Katie to baby playgroup, she quickly felt out of place. Katie was just diagnosed with Down syndrome, and other parents didn’t know how to react. But the staff at The Belle Center was different. “Everyone just oohed and ahhed over her. No one mentioned Down syndrome,” Newport remembers. “She was a baby first, and their reaction seemed so profound because of other people’s reactions.” At just 2 months old, Katie began her long journey with The Belle Center. Her parents worked with the organization’s therapists to create daily routines and build cognitive skills at home, and her preschool classroom was evenly divided between children with and without disabilities. Newport says Katie, who was also diagnosed with a nonverbal autism spectrum disorder, loved participating in the same activities as her cousin, who was also in her class. “You know how your kids like something by nonverbal actions. When I picked her up from preschool, she was always so happy and just wanted to keep playing,” Newport says. Today, Newport serves on the board at The Belle Center, and she watched with pride as Katie, now 8, marched in Hudson Elementary’s Halloween parade last year. “With her autism, you could tell when she’d get overwhelmed, but the teachers wanted to help her work through those issues and include her,” Newport says. “They said, ‘She’s going to be at the end of the line and be a part of this.’ Now that we’re in a good place and pleased with how Katie’s doing, we want to advocate for other families and pass that on.”

[ how you can help ] The Belle Center is in need of children’s toys, art supplies and other items found on its online wish list at bellecenter.com. For more information, call 314.692.8499.

business [IN]sight Kirkwood Farmers’ Market ] While sorting through old photos from the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market, Kori Thompson found a familiar face—hers. Her teenage face looks back from a shot of her family at a dance performance and from another as a cheerleader selling lemon shake-ups. So it seems only natural that Thompson returned to her roots years later as the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market Master, responsible for just about every aspect of its daily operations. “It’s neat having the background and family in Kirkwood,” she says. “I’m proud to work here. It’s a good job for meeting community needs.” The Kirkwood Farmers’ Market is a city institution, and one that’s been around much longer than than the current farm-to-table trend. It opened in 1976, evolving to include a large market building that can hold up to 30 vendors. Another 10 vendors can set up in the open-air portion next to the indoor facility. Over time, the demand for farm-fresh produce was so great that today it is the only St. Louis-area farmers market open daily from April to December. “Most people shop on the weekends in Kirkwood, but we don’t have a lot of grocery stores,” Thompson says. “During any day, I can look around and see people shopping for things they would look for at their local grocery store.” Admittedly, market master is an odd title, but it fits. “Off-season, I do a lot of vendor recruitment because I want the market to be full,” Thompson says. “During the season, I focus on making sure vendors are happy and all their needs are met.” Add on a long list of administrative duties, and it’s understandable that Thompson’s hands are full. Vendors like Farrar Out Farms, Summit Produce and dozens more sell fruit, vegetables, meats and other food items during the spring and summer months. A pumpkin patch and Christmas tree lot dominate the later months. Between January and March, Thompson and a volunteer market committee prepare for the coming season. They review applications from interested vendors, who pay either a daily or seasonal rate to set up and sell their wares. “We have a hierarchy of what we’re looking for in our market, starting with food and farm products, then flowers, then other products like soap,” Thompson says. “Customers in our community are always asking about organic farms, so we look for those, too.” During the season, Thompson can usually be found among the vendors and shoppers, easily spotted in a bright pink T-shirt and yellow cap. She estimates anywhere from 500 to 1,000 people show up on a typical Saturday, the busiest day of the week. Despite its popularity, Thompson says the market is not about turning a profit. Any income Kirkwood receives is from vendor rental fees and goes back into operating the business. “It’s a gathering place and a cornerstone of our community,” she says. “People in downtown Kirkwood take pride in it and make it a regular part of their lives. It’s like no other market in town.”

It’s a magical and enchanting evening. So, knowing you’ll be at the circus for an evening event, I suggest something ‘nice casual’ to keep cool. Look for a fun print or the hot new summer colors (orange, yellow, green, pink, turquoise). If you prefer to wear pants, select a capri or ankle-length silhouette. Top it off with a colorful top.

T&S | How long have you been married?

W

SH | We have been married for four years and have three boys (Alex, 16, Will, 11, and Henry, 6 months) and one daughter (Carson, 12).

hen Shannon Herring and John Noddings married and blended their two families, they needed a house in Kirkwood that could handle lots of kids— and a home office. John is an executive VP of Fulcrum Advisory Services, and Shannon works as treasurer and CFO for NLP Investments. What’s it like working together in the same house? “I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” John says. “Every day is take your baby to work day!” We learned a lot more about the couple, their children and the major health scare that changed everything.

T&S | Tell me about your beautiful home. SH | We knew we needed a house large enough for the kids and our office. A new build was the way to go for us. I designed the layout and basically picked out every detail. T&S | How would you describe your style? SH | We have a love for all things English. We got married in England, and our style is English traditional. I like things that look like they’ve been there forever. T&S | Tell me about your accessories and collections. SH | Everything has to have meaning. For instance, this large glass jar holds corks from bottles of wine we’ve consumed. The maps on the wall are from London, where we travel regularly for business. I’ve picked up many things over the years that I’ve loved from our favorite places, like the manual coffee grinder from Harrods in London and the Scottish beer steins from Edinburgh. I’ve always had a weakness for English transferware, which I collect whenever I can. T&S | John, what do love about the decorating? jn | I appreciate how the finishes are consistent throughout the

The master bathroom has custom cabinets and marble tilework. The couple wanted their bath to have the feel of a luxury hotel. They also wanted five bedrooms on the second floor.

A new build was the way to go for us. I designed the layout and basically picked out every detail.

The heart of the home, the large living room has a long dining table large enough to seat the whole family. This room is open to the kitchen and has a wood-burning, stone fireplace lit during cold months.

A baby grand piano rests in the sunny music room. French doors and shuttered windows create an inspiring space for John’s boys, who have played piano since a young age, and Shannon’s daughter, who has played since she was 7

house. For instance, the staircase goes all the way to the third floor (to our office) and makes everything seem so connected. I also love history, and Shannon found this great painting of the sea battle between the Russians and the Ottoman Empire. T&S | Your kitchen is going to be featured this summer in the Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen and Bath Ideas magazine. How did that come about? SH | We had Karr Bick do our kitchen, and they recommended us. It’s really exciting!

pressure in my chest. It only lasted about 10 or 15 minutes the first day, but was followed by nausea. Although I thought it was unusual, I tried to ignore it. I also had pain from my left shoulder down to my fingertips and inside my mouth and jaw. I just couldn’t believe at 42, I’d be having a heart issue. I’d been monitored heavily throughout my pregnancy because I was over 40, and I thought How could this be happening to me now? The third day of this, I woke up at 2 a.m., unable to sleep due to the pain, and and we finally went to the emergency room at 3 p.m., and I was in surgery by 6 p.m. I think the doctors were as surprised we were!

T&S | What’s your favorite room? SH | Probably the kitchen/family room. The wood-burning fireplace makes it really cozy. I love that I can be cooking and have the kids watching TV and hanging out right here. Kids, what do you love most about this house? will | Our basement is awesome. We have our Wii and Xbox down there. carson | We have a ton of board games, too. Apples to Apples is our favorite! alex | We like to play pool and air hockey down there, and it’s fun to have our friends hang out. T&S | Your life changed dramatically right after Henry was born. SH | I had double bypass surgery two-and-a-half weeks after Henry was born on Oct. 8, 2011.

John, Shannon and kids relax on their back patio.

T&S | What do you want people to know about your experience? SH | It doesn’t matter how old or how fit you are. None of my past medical checkups revealed I had a 3-inch blockage in one artery. Women have different symptoms than men, and if you have any or all the symptoms, check it out.

T&S | What happened? SH | I’d been exhausted from having a new baby, and my upper back began to hurt. I figured it was from being overly tired and nursing my son, but I started to have an intense, odd

T&S | You seem to be doing great now. SH | I’m feeling really well. I’m thankful to be here in this house with my family.

“When we designed and built our home in 2008, we wanted it to look as if it had been there for years,” Shannon says. “We also wanted it to look good for years to come! The greatest compliment we receive is when someone asks if our house is new or rehabbed.”

The kitchen will be featured in this summer’s Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen and Bath Ideas magazine. Baby Henry’s room is done in soothing shades of blue. “We converted our guest room into the nursery last summer, and I came across some old Russian war maps that were given to John. I loved the colors and thought they would be perfect for Henry’s nursery. They were the starting point for decorating his room. “

Kitchen Tour by tony di martino | photos by bill barrett

As any Downton Abbey fan knows, kitchens used to be dark, sooty spaces hidden away ‘below stairs,’ as far away from polite society as possible. Today, the kitchen is the heart of the home. The recent Junior League of St. Louis Kitchen Tour featured seven innovative spaces where local homeowners prepare and share their latest recipes, nurture their families, help the kids with their homework and entertain friends.

town & country

ary Bruning took a fresh approach to traditional style in her Town & Country kitchen, part of a new custom home constructed by Bruning Homes. “We wanted an open, spacious room capable of accommodating a growing family and frequent entertaining,” Bruning says. “At the same time, it had to be comfortable and efficient enough for daily use.” A study in contrasts, the airy space pairs gleaming white custom and semi-custom Omega and Dynasty cabinets with stunning black accents, including granite countertops and a dramatic chandelier. The cabinets have inset doors, many with glass fronts and decorative grills. A Kohler cast-iron sink surrounded by a subway tile backsplash adds classic elegance; Wolf double convection ovens and a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer provide contemporary ease. Plentiful windows and soaring ceilings give it an open, airy feel, and a walk-in butler’s pantry provides ample storage. Architectural details include criss-cross box beams on the 10-foot ceiling and extensive crown molding. Red oak hardwood flooring pulls the space together.

on’t fence Michelle Llewellyn in. The first thing she did when it was time to remodel her kitchen was tear down a large wall between the kitchen and family room. “It was a giant step toward taking our classic ranch home in a more modern direction,” Llewellyn says. Leaded glass display cabinets contrast with granite countertops and backsplash. A stone surround over the range offers a traditional touch, but modern features include a pot-filler, pull-out spice cabinet and two concrete-topped islands, one with a sink. “I fill it with ice and stow drinks in it when we have a party,” she says. The space is family friendly: matching pocket doors slide shut to hide the cluttered mudroom and separate refrigerator and freezer drawers for the kids offer easy access to after-school snacks and smoothie fixings. “There’s even an area for my laptop, so I can look up recipes quickly,” she says.

ulie and Cliff Heggs bought their Central West End home in the 1970s. When they were ready to remodel the kitchen, Cliff, a retired art teacher with a knack for architectural design, took a hands-on approach. “I drew up four different layouts, then collaborated with a designer,” he says. The result is a cozy, welcoming space that reflects the personalities and interests of the people who use it. “We wanted a place where Cliff could indulge his passion for cooking,” Julie says. Exposed brick backs a hooded Electrolux range, and tall white cabinets topped with leaded glass showcase Cliff’s pottery and treasures from the couple’s travels. The stain-proof floor looks like hardwood, but it’s actually a synthetic from Australia. “This is a great place to relax with a cup of coffee or share a drink with friends,” Cliff says. “Best of all, the new space feels like it’s been here from the beginning, which is just the effect we wanted.”

told my designer I didn’t want the kind of old-fashioned kitchen I grew up with,” Pam Kennedy recalls. “The kids are gone, and the bold, contemporary person who’s been hiding in my soul can finally come out!” She opted for a chic, loftlike space that echoes her art-filled Glendale home. Cool is the rule here: Stainless steel appliances and toe-kicks gleam beneath ultra-modern lighting, bright jolts of color delight the eye, and a carrera marble backsplash with stainless inserts adds texture. “We got rid of the front porch, which made room for a massive island where everyone can gather when I entertain,” Kennedy says. “What used to be a series of boxed-in areas is now a fresh, open space where guests can mingle.”

his Creve Coeur couple wanted an open, timeless look for their kitchen, which hadn’t been renovated since the early 1990s. “We really wanted to open up the flow of the house, so we removed the partition wall between the kitchen and family room,” the homeowner says. They installed hardwood flooring, built a new fireplace surround and renovated the existing wet bar. Maple cabinets add warmth; recessed lighting fixtures and under-cabinet lighting lend subtle brightness. Luxurious touches include granite countertops and top-of-the-line Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances. “But our favorite feature is the roomy island, which is big enough for our family of five to dine comfortably.”

amily comes first for Maureen Strasheim of Creve Coeur. “When we were ready to remodel our kitchen, I envisioned a place where we could celebrate birthdays and holidays together for years to come,” she says. The result is a kitchen, wet bar, office, laundry room and mudroom area that offers something for everyone. What appears to be a commercial-size refrigerator is actually two separate pieces joined with a shared top vent cover. Drawers beneath the gas cooktop, hutch and island provide plenty of storage space. Even the family dog now has his very own built-in kennel, located in a line of cubbies that hold backpacks and briefcases. “We have electrical outlets in each cubby, so everyone can recharge their toys and gadgets at the end of the day,” Strasheim says.

heryl Robinson wanted her newly constructed kitchen in Richmond Heights to have an Old World feel. Her husband, general contractor Bert Risch, agreed. A reclaimed Jerusalem limestone floor, hand-finished backsplash of sand-blasted limestone, and distressed wood cabinetry helped achieve their goal. “But ambience goes just so far, so the space also has all the modern amenities, including geothermal floors and Thermador appliances,” Robinson says. Blonde cabinets with leaded glass windows soar to the ceiling, which is covered in whitewashed floorboards. “Being green is important to us, so we chose LED energy-efficient lighting.” Cabinets in the adjacent mudroom were salvaged, stripped and refinished, then paired with vintage hardware and a black marble countertop. The kitchen flows into the great room, where double doors lead to a covered back patio.

Mercy]

Having a baby is always stressful, but Mercy Labor & Birth Suites, debuting in January 2013, offer amenities for women and their families to make the birthing experience uniquely theirs. “Mercy already has the largest birthing center in the region with 8,000 births a year,” says Christine Crain, senior vice president for Women’s Services and chief operating officer at Mercy Children’s Hospital. She expects even more births once the center opens. “Couples these days are looking for a truly personal experience,” she says. “The new rooms are spacious with private baths and showers, so if the woman wants to do water labor in the tub, she can.” Women will labor and deliver in the same room on either the sixth or seventh floors. Scheduled C-section rooms take place on the seventh floor, but unanticipated C-sections can also be done on six. “After delivery, moms are moved to postpartum rooms on the same floor, a lateral move without elevators,” Crain says. “Postpartum rooms, now being renovated, are private rooms with baths, pullout couches and plenty of comfortable space for the entire family.” Before the new area was designed, Mercy solicited input from new moms, asking them for their preferences on features, amenities and decor. “In direct response to their suggestions, the new design limits the number of people coming in and out of the rooms,” Crain says. Supply techs can stock the rooms from the hall. Registration will no longer be a challenge for expectant moms, she adds. “Starting in January, they can register at a maternity welcome center as soon as they come in the front door. If they’re already in labor, they’ll be taken to their room as soon as possible.” Beyond the welcome center is an OB triage area for assessment of pre-labor issues. “It’s all about getting moms to the right place quickly and efficiently.” The new triage area is the culmination of many years of strategic planning. “The rooms are a third bigger, have more patient and family comfort, and offer state-of-the-art equipment for clinicians,” says OB/Gyn chair Dr. Octavio Chirino. With the hospital’s high volume of births, a labor-delivery-recovery design with lateral relocation to postpartum made the most sense, he adds. “We’re always been a delivery resource with first-rate OB anesthesia and neonatal intensive care; now we’re also a grand hotel with first-rate clinical expertise.” For more information on Mercy Labor & Birth Suites, call 314.251.1397 or visit its facebook page at facebook.com/MercyMomsToBeSTL cover courtest of mercy

DaVita and the Washington University Renal Division are proud to work together to offer patients in St. Louis – as well as around the country – some of the most advanced options in nocturnal and in-center dialysis. Washington University has one of the oldest, largest and most respected dialysis practices in the United States. And every day, in all of its clinics, the DaVita name reflects the company’s purpose. Giving life. DaVita is a leading provider of kidney care in the U.S. From dialysis services to patient education, and helpful information, DaVita is there to give approximately 125,000 patients the tools to stay healthy.

Nocturnal hemodialysis is ideal for active people who want to pursue their regular daytime activities – being with friends and family, taking care of the kids, working standard hours – with minimal disruption to their lives. In addition to convenience, it can also help improve clinical results. Because patients dialyze over a longer period of time, the nocturnal treatment can remove more toxins and fluids than traditional dialysis. Even better, patients report more energy, reduced dependence on medications, less nausea and better control of their blood pressure. Two highly reputable organizations – one amazing partnership dedicated to providing comprehensive, innovative approaches to diagnosing and treating renal disease.

parent trap surprise!

Fifty years ago, Art Linkletter showed us how funny it was when ‘kids say the darnedest things.’ But it’s also true that teenagers alarm their parents by doing (or threatening to do) some pretty scary things. How should you react when your child boldly tells you that they are an atheist? Or that they’re getting a piercing or tattoo? Dropping out of engineering school to enter an art institute? It’s always a good idea to first figure out their motive. Are they just trying to provoke a reaction? Covering up a deeper concern? Testing to see how safe a listener you are when it concerns touchy subjects? Each reason requires a different response. If your gut tells you they are pushing your buttons, don’t react with anger, shock or a three-hour lecture. Calmly ask a few questions: Why don’t you believe in God anymore? What do you believe in? Have you thought through the reactions a tattoo might elicit from teachers, employers or college admissions officers? Being sincerely curious and trying to get in their heads for a moment usually takes the provocative wind out of their sails. It’s no fun if mom doesn’t freak out, so frequently the issue dies there. ‘Savannah,’ one of my 16-year-old campers, told her parents one night that one of her classmates was pregnant. Her dad’s immediate response was, “She was

always kind of a slut anyway.” That comment told Savannah that topics of dating, boys and sexuality were off the table with her dad because of his judgmental attitude. He failed her safety test. Asking to get a tattoo or dye their hair purple may be a teen’s way of saying they feel left out socially. It’s hard to admit out loud that you have no good friends; kids tell me they worry their parents will think they are losers. But having a heart-toheart conversation about why they want these things might elicit what they are really concerned about, and then you can be supportive instead of shocked. I meet a lot of teens who feel pressure to follow the path their parents laid out for them: good high school, good college, a business degree, blah, blah, blah. Too many parents forget to ask what their teenager wants, what their plan is. Blurting out that they are going to drop out of high school and travel to India may be their way of testing the waters. Will my parents really listen to me? Are they open to a non-traditional path? Are they going to let go and allow me to create my own story? So whether it’s a statement about God, belly button piercings or a shaved head, don’t freak out! Stay calm, stay curious, and stay in the moment. Figure out the meaning behind the message. Use the moment to create more safety, trust, respect and closeness. It’s an opportunity to learn more about how your teen is thinking and feeling. It’s a gift.

[ Parenting by mary jo blackwood, RN, MPH

No doubt about it: having kids changes everything.

Compared to 20 years ago, the resources available for new and not-so-new parents can enhance pregnancy, create a positive birth experience and keep us sane as we adjust to our roles as parents.

[ learning around adhd ] Kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder make up 3 to 5 percent of schoolage children. They struggle in school, but the latest management techniques can help them learn and thrive. Shelley B. Smith is an educator in private practice with Special Solutions. Besides working directly with children, she helps parents select schools and programs that support ADHD students. She also works with teachers to tweak schedules for maximum productivity, timing peak medication levels for demanding classes. Kids with ADHD get branded as lazy, but most of them just can’t sit for the length of time demanded. Smith tutors kids and helps them devise workable study schedules by chunking study time and breaks, focusing on one thing at a time, and starting earlier to prepare for a test or project. Parents can help kids by establishing a firm study routine, such as Sunday through Thursday evenings. It also helps to provide an organizational tool to keep track of assignments, such as an easy-to-carry planner or an index card with a list of daily responsibilities. For older kids, a smartphone with Google calendar does the trick. Parents also need to work with a doctor on medication and behavior therapy. The Greater St. Louis ADD group (meetup.com) provides resources and parental support.

[ managing asthma attacks ]

[ new parent support systems ]

Asthma and allergy action plans are crucial to keeping children out of the emergency room and breathing easy.

Back in the day, if a new parent didn’t have family close by, extra support for childcare was nonexistent. But St. Louis now has a wealth of new parent support.

Dr. Hamsa Subramanian, Allergy & Asthma Docs, Signature Health Services Make sure everyone knows the child’s triggers. For instance, no sleepovers at a house with a cat. Make sure emergency medications are on hand and up-to-date. Health plans allow more than one rescue inhaler or Epi-pen, so you can have one at school and one in the soccer bag. Write down the expiration dates on the calendar for replacement. If you have one at school, pick it up at the end of the year. Be aware that doses may change as the child grows. Keep on top of maintenance medications. Most inhalers come with a dose counter. Tell the child when it gets down to five doses to let you know for reorder. Order a stylish medical alert bracelet, especially for sleep-away camps or foreign travel. It may save a life.

Diane Sanford, psychologist, Women’s Healthcare Partnership People used to live in real, interactive communities; now, parent groups fill that void. Moms can benefit from hearing how other moms have handled situations and upheavals. My blog, livingselfcare.com, is an online self-care program for moms and dads about how to balance their needs with those of their families. Children’s well-being depends on their parents remaining sane, so we have to make our needs a priority. Research shows parents who don’t take care of their needs tend to have babies with cognitive, behavioral and health problems. I recommend mothertomothersupport.org, a free community-based program where women can talk to someone and share resources. Other useful sites include todaysmama.com and parentsasteachers.org, which is organized by school district and offers classes and support groups.

Dr. Blakeslee Noyes, director of Pulmonary Medicine, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and SLU School of Medicine All children should have an asthma action plan. For a small child, it may be symptom-based; for an older child or teen, it could involve using a peak-flow meter when symptoms start. The child blows into the meter to measure exhalation speed. Green, yellow or red zones prescribe the action you need to take. Green is okay; yellow or red have treatments outlined in the action plan. If they can’t get back in the green zone, it’s time to call the doctor. If the attack is severe with shortness of breath or lips and fingernails have turned blue, go to the emergency room. Parents sometimes get used to symptoms and may not act quickly enough. Symptoms are not normal. If the child is waking at night or symptoms limit activity, he may need a reassessment of the action plan and possibly consultation with a pulmonary specialist.

Kelly Swinkles, head nurse of Maternity and Newborn Services, St. Luke’s Hospital St. Luke’s offers a free program, Your Special Nurse, that provides one-on-one education and support during pregnancy and after discharge. The hospital serves as a safety net for moms and dads. We send each new mom home with a list of phone numbers, so if they have a problem in the middle of the night with feeding or their baby won’t stop crying, they can call. St. Luke’s also has an active lactation service for nursing moms whether they delivered with us or not. The national average for breast feeding is 75 percent; St. Luke’s is 87 percent. Our classes for new parents include Mommies’ Night Out for Fitness and Stroller Babies. Infant massage is popular with both moms and dads. The Happiest Baby on the Block teaches parents to soothe their babies. Taking advantage of available support helps parents’ confidence and happiness grow.

HEALTH&BEAUTY

[ health care communications after divorce ] After a divorce, children often become vulnerable to lapses in communication between parents and health care providers. Communication is crucial. Dr. Mark Howard, family medicine physician, BJC Medical Group When we treat children, we assume we can give medical information to either parent unless we are told otherwise. If only one parent has legal custody of the child and doesn’t want us to release information to the other parent, we need a court order on file. Anyone visiting or spending time with the child needs the following information: doctor’s phone number, list of child’s medications and allergies, and a letter from the legal guardian giving permission to treat for emergency health problems. Otherwise, the child may get inaccurate treatment or may sit for hours while we track down a parent. Doctors sometime get caught in the crossfire when parents disagree about treatment, be it ADHD medication, vaccinations or even surgery. I’ve known parents who couldn’t agree on whether their child’s adenoids should be removed. It’s important to discuss these matters and give the doctor clear direction.

Margo Green, Green Cordonnier & House, specialists in family law In most divorces, parents are awarded joint legal custody of any children and both have access to medical records. After divorce, doctors and dentists should have contact information for both parents to keep them informed. Doctors and dentists should ask for a copy of the divorce decree that spells out custody and medical care responsibility, including who pays for what. That way there are no privacy or financial issues. It’s important for parents to make mutual decisions about their children’s health issues, from daily vitamins to prescribed medications. Having joint legal custody means one parent can’t make health decisions unilaterally for the child; they have to discuss and agree on it or use mediation to work it out. And that isn’t limited to divorce; the same issues apply to anyone who shares a child, regardless of marital state.

[ cool tool VIOlight Zapi uses patented UV technology to kill 99.9 percent of oral germs. Place the toothbrush in the sanitizer after each use and push the button. In seven minutes, it’s sanitized and ready for the next brushing, and it helps protect kids during flu season. The fun, egg-shaped device rolls around but stays balanced. Cordless and great for travel. Sale.dentist.net, $35

[ living with childhood seizures ] There are 40 different kinds of seizures, and one child can have several types. nurse Becky Schulze is a volunteer with the Epilepsy Foundation of Missouri & Kansas. Her mother has epilepsy and so does her son. Before medication, her 8-year-old son had continuous seizures. Now he can go months without one. He recently had a vagal nerve stimulator implanted that gives off a small current to the brain every 30 seconds to break up seizure patterns, but he still needs medication. Educating adults who supervise a child with epilepsy is important. Before school starts, Schulze meets with teachers and the school nurse, therapist and counselor to provide information about her son’s seizures: what they look like, his health history and basic seizure first aid. She gives them a written action plan and seizure observation record. Parents can download these forms from the Epilepsy Foundation website. The Epilepsy Foundation also has an educator who will come to school for staff education and age-appropriate programs for students. There’s even a special brochure for babysitters. Seizures are embarrassing and upsetting for the child. Schulze says her son feels better when his friends know what to expect and can get comfortable with it.

Question: I went to my doctor with neck and arm pain; an MRI showed a pinched nerve in my neck. Does this mean I have to have surgery?

Answer:

You are describing a condition called cervical radiculopathy and there are many ways to treat it. Common symptoms are arm pain, numbness/tingling and weakness corresponding to the pinched nerve. Other symptoms include neck pain or an intense pain between your shoulder blades. This is caused by irritation or pinching of one of the cervical (neck) nerves as it exits the upper spine. The initial treatment is usually conservative including medications and taking it easy. Therapy and neck exercises can also help in some cases. Another option is injection of steroid medications near the nerve to decrease inflammation. Fortunately, for most people, symptoms resolve completely within 6 to 12 weeks. If any symptoms persist, then it is a good idea to be evaluated by a spine surgeon specializing in neck and upper spine. The surgeon will take a history, examine you, and review your studies to pinpoint the cause of the problem. Additional studies may be ordered to help ensure symptoms are from your neck and not due to shoulder problems or pinching of the nerves at the elbow or wrist.

Todd J. Stewart, MD Washington University Neurological Surgery

Surgery for cervical radiculopathy is usually reserved for people that have: • persistent or recurrent arm pain that can’t be controlled with conservative treatment • progressive weakness of the arm • persistent weakness, numbness or tingling that is bothersome to the patient

West County  Center for Advanced Medicine

314.362.3577

As a spine surgeon, my biggest worry is that persistent weakness will become permanent if the compression continues for too long and causes irreversible nerve damage. I share all treatment options with my patients, however, the ultimate decision regarding surgery is yours. If you are a suitable candidate and choose surgery, the experience is usually rewarding with quick recovery, minimal adverse side effects and long-term relief of symptoms. may 9 , 2012

[I love my... nail polish! by lauren madras | photo by charles barnes

Nail polish has been making a bold red carpet statement recently. From bright yellow to almost-black gray, everyone’s been talking about who’s wearing what and when. Every color, finish and style says a little something about the person wearing it. Here are our favorites! Go to our Facebook page and under ‘I Love My nail polish,’ post your own special product and why it works for you!

<< Catherine Klene managing editor Patina Pearl by Borghese Nail Lacquer; Midnight Cami by Essie Despite its frosty look, this iridescent Borghese color goes on incredibly light. My nails shine and look polished, not overdone. Best part: The sheer color means chips don’t show—great for me, since I can’t keep a manicure to save my life! For my toes, it’s no secret that blue is my favorite color. This Essie shade is a fun alternative to summer corals and pinks, and it looks super cute peeking out from my favorite wedges.

<< Wendy Steinbecker Style Coordinator Graphite by Chanel One word to describe this color: sexy. The shimmer is very subtle, appropriate for day and evening, and it lasts about a week. The name itself suggests silver, but I found that this chameleon polish changes and can also read gold at times.

<< Tony Di martino Senior Editor Like Linen by Essie I type all day. I need a neutral polish that doesn’t show chips. This is it.

<< Dorothy Weiner | Editor in Chief Samoan Sand by O.P.I.; seche vite Because I use my fingers so much at work and home (I’m always on kitchen patrol), I go through four steps to ensure I get the hardest, most durable home manicure. Thanks to tips from nail technician Mariel Edwards at Dominic-Michael Salon, I start with CND Stickey, a basecoat that really adheres to the polish. The color I apply over that is Samoan Sand by O.P.I., a shiny, very neutral shade that adds gloss and a little bit of beige tone. My preferred topcoat is Seche Vite ( French for ‘quick dry’), and after waiting at least 15 minutes for nails to dry, the piece de resistance is Daby Nail Hardener, a lacquer that really keeps those nails from chipping.

<< Lauren Madras Lifestyle Editor Glitzerland by O.P.I. Just one coat on my toes is a perfect amount of color and sheen, and it works with any shoes or setting. A second coat is bright and shiny, like gold leaf. I absolutely hate chipped polish, so I almost never paint my fingernails. When I do, I know I’ll take it off the next day, so I go bold, bright or silly.

3 [Resolutions Be a Better Parent by lauren madras “There is no manual,” says Mary Jo Corcoran, director of parent education at Ladue Early Childhood Center. “Reading books can help if that’s how you learn, but like everyone else, you will have to learn from your mistakes and experience.” In her experience as a parent, educator and parenting coach, Corcoran has seen it all, from problematic parenting to families coping with developmental challenges. “You have to remember, it’s never too late to make a change,” she says. “It will take more effort and intensity at first, but you can always improve your and your family’s lives.”

five common mistakes ] 1. Over-Accommodation

If your child wants the blue cup, but the blue cup is dirty, it may seem easier in the short-run just to wash it. But you’ll help your child become a flexible adult by telling them, That one’s dirty, but you can have your second choice! When you bend over backward every time, it becomes your child’s status quo. I’ve seen this become a problem for children who enter school and realize life isn’t like that. I’ve even seen adults who are less adventurous or less willing to try new things. It also can create resentment for parents, who get angry when their children don’t show appreciation for their efforts.

2. Creation of a Happy Bubble When a child is afraid of or unprepared for a situation, it seems natural to try to make it ‘just right.’ We want our children to be happy all the time, but when your goal is daily happiness rather than maturity or growth, you can end up regretting it later. If a child never experiences disappointment or embarrassment when they are young, they miss out on developing coping mechanisms, and future setbacks will hit much harder. Avoid finishing assignments for your child or letting them opt-out of the school play if they have stage fright.

3. Using a Technology Babysitter There’s an app for everything—even parenting. I’ve seen parents who use iPhone apps that help shush their baby to sleep (that it even exists is interesting to me). I think we’ll see these technological tools are harmful down the road. Digital games don’t engage creativity and problem solving the way traditional toys do, and playing alone all the time can hamper development. Children raised this way may have a harder time making eye contact or engaging with new people. We know enough about how the brain works that we can see brain activity is ‘quieted’ even when children use interactive tech—it’s just not interactive enough.

4. Distracted Parenting I see parents who are always on their iPad or smartphone when talking to their kids, and that lays down a bad precedent for the future. Children will get demanding because they feel they aren’t your priority. Plus, one day, they’ll have these technologies, and they’ll model their behavior after yours. Next time, make a point of telling your child, I’m turning off my phone and letting calls go to voicemail because this is family time, and it’s important to me. Then, of course, you have to really do it.

5. Overwrought Parenting When your child is having a tantrum, try to remember it’s not about you. It’s difficult, but having an over-reaction or ignoring it completely are both ineffective reactions. Especially for toddlers, tantrums happen when a child is upset, but lacks the vocabulary to express their concerns. Imagine how frustrating that would be! This is a time for emotional development. Help them feel secure by acknowledging their feelings without changing your answer to the original tantrum-causing question. When they are calm again, welcome them back into family activities with a clean slate.

Tom Schmidt, proprietor of the popular Franco in Soulard, recently opened Nico in what used to be Brandt’s. Franco’s sous chef, Darin Since, oversees this kitchen. The food is home-style Mediterranean, drawn from the culinary traditions of France, Italy, Spain and Morocco. This place is almost bare-bones minimalist, with about 20 tables airily spaced across three rooms. Our starter of Salt Cod Croquettes ($7) consisted of two small cakes deep-fried dark and crisp, with a crunchy coating and piping hot, soft mashed fish inside. They came drizzled with a garlic-y and light, creamy aioli, which added a little pungency. The Bruschetta ($9) had three smallish pieces of toasted, house-made focaccia, each piled with chunky, cold eggplant caponata, white anchovies, roasted red peppers and a sliver of asiago cheese. The caponata was quite acidic, almost pickled and not my favorite, but combined with the other ingredients, there was a nice interplay of salty and pungent.

Some diners might find the small menu limiting. Of the eight entrees, we started with Calamari ($18), a few tubes of nicely done squid, thin and tender, without the rubbery quality it can have, stuffed with that same eggplant caponata. They were quite satisfying, although the dish needed some salt and pepper. A side of Tortilla Espanola with piperade was a Spanish-style eggy quiche with chunks of potato and a spicy red sauce. My favorite entree was Moroccan Lamb ($20), shredded meat braised with pungent Middle Eastern spices that permeated the stew-like dish. It came on a bed of pearled couscous. The meat was infused with cinnamon, mace, ginger, turmeric, cardamom and other exotic spices, as well as bits of fig and carrot, which rendered it slightly sweet. The complimentary foccaccia is light and satisfying, dotted with herbs and oil. Also very good is the Chicken Paillard ($17), a classic piccata-style dish, lightly breaded, pan-fried and served

drizzled with olive oil and capers. The breast retained moisture, yet was well-browned on the outside. It came with buttery and crisped-at-the-edges broccolini and caked polenta, which I find much less interesting in texture and taste than the creamy variety. Another winner was Skate Wing ($19), a deliciously buttery serving of fish in the ray family, accompanied by broccolini and a too-crisp potato cake, almost burnt. Desserts were stellar, in particular the Chocolate Flan ($7). It was denser than the usual custard, almost gelatinous, and very chocolatey, with a dab of crunchy, crushed pistachio praline. Also memorable were the Orange Crepes ($8), an unusual concoction of wonderfully light, eggy crepes filled with mascarpone cheese mashed with strawberries. They’re topped with tart balsamic drizzle and chopped pistachios and served with wonderful vanilla bean ice cream.

Creative. Distinctive. Impressive.

Baker Alex Carlson has wowed us since 2010, when we took our first bite of the divine baguettes, boules and buns he made as in-house baker at Five Bistro on The Hill. Soon, he was supplying his artisan breads to several restaurants around town. Last year, he became a vendor at the Webster Groves Farmers Market, making his Old World country loaves available to the public. Now, Carlson’s company, Red Guitar Bread, will finally have a home to call its own. The brick-and-mortar location will be at 3215 Cherokee St., a few blocks east of Gravois Avenue.

[ new name for nura ]

Café Nura, located at 117 E. Lockwood Ave., in Webster Groves, recently changed its name to Adobe Coffee House. In addition, owner Rimla ‘Remy’ Javed is enhancing the shop’s food and beverage options. Soon, patrons will be able to choose from a short list of red and white wines by the glass, as well as a few local craft beers. Watch for locally made cheeses and locally produced fruit, too.

[ back to school for the block ] The Block restaurant and butcher shop

The Bristol Elementary School garden, located behind

in Webster Groves, has been in need of tender, loving care. On Earth Day, students from the school cleared the bed to make way for a vegetable plot The Block staff will tend. Co-owner Marc Del Pietro planted herbs, tomatoes and veggies destined for diners’ plates. (With the recent addition of lunch service, that fresh produce should come in handy.) Nearby Rolling Ridge Nursery is participating in the project as well, donating starter plants, compost and other gardening materials.

[ pit stop ]

The Sweet Divine food truck has found a permanent truck stop: 4521 S. Kingshighway Blvd., at the corner of Devonshire Avenue. The space will serve as the commissary kitchen for the food truck operation, but there will also be a bakery case in front to serve walk-in patrons. Owner Jenna Siebert is hoping to open doors by mid-month. In related truckie news, The Summer Truck will soon join the area’s ever-growing fleet of mobile eateries, featuring dishes made with fresh, locally raised produce and meats, during warmweather months only. Also soon to vroom is a mobile spice and tea store called The ReTrailer, which will sell home goods made from recycled or up-cycled materials.

[ new stl culinary program ]

The Art Institutes has opened its first location in Missouri. Among the opportunities available at the new school, located in St. Charles, will be a program offering a bachelor’s degree in culinary management and an associate degree in culinary arts. Enrollment has begun, with classes slated to start July 9.

I always feel that I’m coming home,” says Chase resident Doris Slick. “The staff knows me, and they offer to carry up my groceries or packages when I come in. It’s just like being with a family.” Slick moved into the Chase in August 2011, a few months after the death of her husband. “Our singlefamily home in Warson Woods was just too much for me after that,” she says. “I looked at several buildings around town, but nothing compared to the history and beauty of the Chase.” Slick recently retired and is looking forward to the freedom her new living situation affords. “I am planning a big European trip in the spring, and I love that I can just lock the door behind me and go,” she says. “I have no fear of something happening while I’m gone, I trust the Chase to look after my home.” Slick chose the Steeplechase floor plan, a one-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath home with slightly more than 1,200 square feet. The Private Residences range up to the penthouse size, pictured on the previous page. Currently five of these photo by Maryann Manion one-bedroom condos are available for purchase, each with its own character and the luxurious appointments and lifestyle amenities offered at the Chase. The Steeplechase units are all movein ready, with entertaining spaces that have a kitchen, dining room, half-bath and large living room with bright, sunny windows. The kitchen features Thermador appliances and top-of-theline finishes, such as Solo Luminoso polished granite countertops. The bedroom suite includes a large walk-in closet and spa-like bath with his-andhers sinks, a BainUltra air-jet tub and large glass shower. “I love the Sante membership,” Slick says, referring to resident accessibility to the Chase’s fitness club. “And I use photo by Maryann Manion the Savoy Room for parties, including to celebrate my retirement!” Other shared spaces include the pool, indoor parking, and a private terrace with a dog run, well-kept gardens and barbecue grills. “I haven’t gotten used to the valet parking yet,” she says. “But I know I will the longer I live here. It’s such a luxury to have someone else park your car!” As Slick settles into her new life, she looks forward to exploring her new Central West End neighborhood. “If I wanted to, I wouldn’t have to ever leave the Chase, I’d just have groceries delivered!” she says. “But I love to walk and I have a bike, so this spring I’ll be getting to know the whole area, too.”

Dear Confounded in Kirkwood,

I would include boxwood shrubs under the windows. These hardy evergreen plants are easy to care for, especially if you keep them trimmed low so they don’t block the windows. I’d plant a variety of perennial flowers at the center and end to give a dose of color. In addition, I’d like to see you minimize the impact of the double garage door and driveway. I’d plant a shade tree to keep the focus on the main part of the façade and add a hedge at the edge of the driveway to hide the bottom half of parked cars. Finally, replace the flood lights above the garage door with something more decorative. fit&tidy by lauren madras

Vigorously sweep your deck, porch or patio. It’ll stimulate upper-body muscles and get your blood pumping.

Dust the blades of ceiling fans, the tops of windows and your crown molding to stretch your arms, shoulders and back.

Take throw rugs, curtains or other hard-to-wash textiles and throw them over a clothes line. Have at them with a tennis racket, broom or baseball bat to shake out dust and pollen—and work out your back and shoulders.

Your house will be neater and your body more toned with these fitness-inspired chores. Scan the main level for misplaced items and then run them to their proper location one at a time —bonus if you have to go up and down stairs!

Rip the stray grass and weeds out of seams and cracks in your sidewalk and driveway. Move from clump to clump with long, low squats for a tighter derriere.

Lift with your knees—and then some. When picking up clutter, sink all the way down before standing again. Feel the burn!

Get on your knees and really look at the grout in your bathroom and kitchen. Now that you’ve seen it up close, you can’t leave it that way. Use a stiffbristled brush and some elbow grease to get it looking like new. You’ll feel it in your arms and your back before you’re through.

Declare a power outage in your kitchen. Prepare dinner by hand— chopping, mixing, tossing and crushing your way to a three-course meal will tone your arms and make you appreciate dinner all the more.
