There’s nothing like a trip abroad to make you appreciate home. I find travel educational, but home is where my comfort level is. Just try wearing your favorite jeans and flip flops in the lobby of a Monte Carlo casino. (Maybe don’t try it; I’m not sure they’d let you in the door, the $15 cover charge notwithstanding.) Europeans simply are not as casual as we are, at least not in public. For their evening walks down the esplanade, they come home from work and put on their Sunday best. When I come home from work, I put on my sweats. I knew better than to do that across the pond—every day I gussied up in white jeans and collared shirts. No matter; I was still left in the dust by the French women, in their Chanel scarves and heels (at breakfast). And the newly rich Russians weren’t far behind—the women, that is. The men obviously hadn’t gotten the memo. Then there was the surprising profusion of branded merchandise like Prada, Louis Vuitton, Longchamps, Gucci, et. al. If there is a recession in Europe, you can’t tell it from the handbags. Or the prices. I was 22 euros into a box of Italian nougats before realizing I had just paid $35 for gum drops. After that, I wasn’t about to fall for the macaroons at the Paris airport—4 euros for an almond paste Oreo? Sacre bleu! The challenges aside, travel is interesting and mind-expanding, and not only because you learn so much about other cultures. You come back learning a little something about home, too.

Ranken Jordan A Pediatric Specialty Hospital ] by tony di martino His name is Michael Tekeser, but everyone calls him Mikey T. The 17-year-old sports fan was born with a rare degenerative nerve disorder that causes lifelong complications. There is no cure. Confined to a wheelchair, he can’t speak and can barely move, but he communicates with his eyes. Those eyes were full of joyful tears at a recent hockey game, where Mikey was a guest of the St. Louis Blues. “Knowing Mikey is their No. 1 fan, the Blues organization arranged a suite overlooking the goal for Mikey, his mom and his medical team,” says Ranken Jordan CEO Lauri Tanner. Hockey hall-of-famer and former Blues forward Keith Tkachuk sat next to Mikey and talked sports for all three periods. Officials and players stopped by to say hello, presenting him with a personalized jersey and autographed hockey stick. “He’s still on cloud nine,” Tanner says. “It’s a night he’ll never forget—and neither will we.” It was a dream come true for Mikey, but typical of Ranken Jordan’s ‘care beyond the bedside’ philosophy. “There’s a limit to how much you can heal by staying in a hospital bed, staring at TV,” says Tanner, a registered nurse. “We get kids up and moving, helping them function as fully as possible. Before you know it, they’re ready to face the world again, physically and emotionally stronger than when they came in.” The philosophy applies to parents, also. “We reduce stress by coordinating care with referring physicians, specialists, nurses and therapists.” Ranken Jordan, established in 1941, serves kids ages 2 weeks to 21 years with a broad range of options, including outpatient and rehabilitation programs and psychological support. “We’re a transition between acute care and home for the sickest of the sick: kids who were born with complex conditions or who’ve suffered severe complications from accidents or injuries,” Tanner explains. “Families come to us after other hospitals tell them, There’s nothing more we can do for your child.” But most parents aren’t able to handle a complex, ongoing medical condition at home. “So we fill that gap, and then educate parents to continue the healing.” Demand for the hospital’s specialized services is high, and the waiting list keeps growing. “We hope to expand from 34 to 60 beds in the next few years, but there’s no way we can do it without continued community support,” Tanner says. The annual Ranken Jordan Golf Tournament, one of the institution’s major fundraisers, takes place July 9 at Norwood Hills Country Club. The event, chaired by Walter Bazan Jr., is sponsored by Thompson Coburn and McCarthy Building Cos. Having a seriously ill child can be a lonely experience. “Many overwhelmed parents tell us they’d lost all hope until they walked through our doors,” Tanner says. “They felt everyone had given up on their child. Well, we don’t give up. Other facilities may provide life support, but Ranken Jordan is all about living support.”

A recent public forum on the growing heroin problem among suburban teens was produced by the Brentwood, Clayton and Ladue school districts. The town hall-style meeting at Clayton High included representatives from the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, St. Louis County Police and St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund. Educators, social services agencies, treatment experts and law enforcement authorities implore parents to accept that heroin is no longer an urban crisis: The horrendously addictive narcotic is cheaper and easier to get in the county than ever. Jumpin’ Jehosaphat! You mean to tell me that psychics will take your money and promise you anything under the sun, but it might not come true? Police say a Chesterfield man reported he was a victim of fraud because he gave a psychic thousands to lift a curse. But since his luck still sucks, he wants something done about it. Police told him no crime was committed, suggesting he seek legal advice to pursue a civil claim. OMG—does this mean my newspaper horoscope is really ‘for entertainment only?’ Maybe I should stick to the promises of wealth and romance I get in fortune cookies. If Suzy Harriston were a high-schooler ‘friending,’ but really spying on Facebook users under an assumed name, she’d have been sent to the principal’s office. But she is the high school principal! Clayton School District officials allege that ‘Suzy Harriston’ was the Facebook alias of principal Louise Losos, who assumed the persona to monitor students on the site. ‘Suzy Harriston’ had managed to

troll for about 300 Facebook friends, many of them CHS students. A terse district message states Losos resigned as principal effective June 30 because of “a fundamental dispute concerning the appropriate use of social media.” Ladies and gentlemen, start your trowels! Meanwhile, 2012 Beautification Awards nominators, sharpen your pencils...er, typing skills. The people who wish to recognize citizens who make Creve Coeur beautiful need to cast their ballots no later than June 1. There are 11 categories, from Best In City to Best Stormwater Solution, in the form to be found atop creve-coeur.org/forms.aspx. Anyone who’s so much as driven under or across the Olive-I-270 bridge would have to be immune to beauty not to rubberneck at the plantings in which this community obviously takes great pride. The iconic smiley face is emblazoned on the plastic bags shoppers get at Walmart. I often think the image of an 800-pound gorilla would be more suitable. The company is putting a new store southwest of Manchester and Kiefer Creek roads, presently an area of weedy lots that include vacant auto dealerships. Many local businesses say they may benefit in the short term, yet suffer over time. Restaurants would enjoy increased lunchtime traffic during construction—but then what? They probably have a lot less to worry about than small businesses with products and services available at Walmart. As the could-be victim of a similar scam, I can imagine how frustrating it is to prove your innocence to Big Brother Inc., of

which cable companies are indifferent members. A local provider tried to hit up an unsuspecting Kirkwood resident for about $800 in unpaid fees, but authorities allege the account was set up by some itinerant slimeball in Hanley Hills. Postal officials say the ruse is common, perpetrated by people who pull up stakes frequently. What’s more, the Federal Trade Commission reports this type of fraud is less common than credit-card fraud—but barely, by 1 measly percentage point (14 versus 13 percent). What does a young couple from Kansas City do on vacay in St. Louis? Why, they hit Ted Drewes, the Arch, the Zoo… plus residences in Rock Hill, Brentwood, Maplewood and Webster Groves. In January, an alert Brentwood woman noticed the female half of the none-too-stealthy pair pacing in front of her neighbor’s house for about 10 minutes when a man with a backpack joined her and they headed down the street. She alerted the cops, and a patrol sergeant swung by and questioned the two, who not only admitted to robbery but had almost $20,000 in other people’s stuff on them! Authorities commended neighborhood watcher Beth Clay and Sgt. Jeff Manestar recently for their role in ending the bungling burglary spree. The face-lift for the Gateway Arch grounds has more than a half-billion dollars to go toward its projected 2015 completion. Even with all the deep corporate pockets in and around the STL, that seems as likely as someone climbing the monument with their bare hands and feet. Well, the city, along with St. Louis and St. Charles counties, may request a 3/16th-of-a-cent tax to wrap up the

plan. State legislators passed a bill that could put the measure on the ballot in the three jurisdictions. But what about hitting up residents of other counties who enjoy our nearest and dearest national park? We know a couple of attorneys who’ve left their practices to teach. It isn’t less stressful, they say, but ultimately more satisfying. Here’s a different rub: Laura Ortmann was the attorney for Ginger Bay Salon and Spa in Kirkwood. But, rather than put out a shingle, she purchased the company. Her time spent just chillaxing—OK, we’re not so naïve as to think the spa business isn’t hard work—has paid off: Ginger Bay’s second salon, in Town & Country, has been named the national Salon of the Year by Salon Today magazine. The editor surprised Ortmann recently by presenting her with a mock-up of the June issue’s cover. In another no-news TV report from Webster Groves, nobody was hurt when water mains broke earlier this month. OK, twice. On two consecutive weekdays. Video showed water washing across Watson Road just west of Elm Avenue, and authorities expected repairs to be completed by rush hour the next day. The day before, a main had broken at Plymouth Avenue and Big Bend Boulevard near Webster University. This is exactly what’s so fun about relaying that no news is no news: “There is no word if the most recent break is a direct result of the first.”

[ nostalgia ] Gypsy Caravan by judy goodman A St. Louis tradition, Gypsy Caravan is coming up Memorial Day, May 28. Now at the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus, rain or shine, thousands of St. Louisans will come to explore and shop at the event’s 40th anniversary. Created by the fabulous Helen Weiss of Famous-Barr and the visionary Evelyn Newman in 1972, Gypsy Caravan was an idea presented to the Women’s Assocation of the St. Louis Symphony. Volunteer fundraisers at that time were known as women’s associations, like the multiple ‘women’s auxiliaries’ that raised money to support vital services delivered by hospitals and important organizations. Weiss secured Famous-Barr as a sponsor, and Newman, who launched a variety of local cultural events and institutions still extant today, ensured its success. The first Gypsy Caravan took place at the Famous-Barr parking lot in Northwest Plaza, then at its peak in popularity. Opened in 1963 by Louis

Zorensky, Milton Zorensky and Saul Brodsky, the open-air shopping center was the largest mall in the world. Later purchased by New York-based Paramount, it was enclosed and expanded in 1989 to nearly 2 million square feet. By 1979, Gypsy Caravan had moved to the St. Louis Arena and was chaired by Anna Lea Kerckhoff in its new location. “The Women’s Association had 1,200 members, and the comaraderie was great fun,” Kerckhoff remembers. “We had to be at the Arena at 4 a.m. to work with the vendors, so we stayed at the Cheshire Inn to enjoy an evening together.” After years at the Arena, Gypsy Caravan moved to University of Missouri-St. Louis from 1995 to 2000, then relocated to Saint Louis University from 2001 to 2003. It made its way to downtown St. Louis in 2003, then moved back to the UMSL campus in 2008. While somewhat of a gypsy itself in relocating around St. Louis, it has now grown to more than 400 booths.

Patients arrive at Oral Facial Surgery Institute and Implant Center angry and in pain, expecting yet another disappointing consultation. “They’re so used to hearing doctors tell them there’s nothing they can do,” Noble says. “They come to us very frustrated. They’ve been passed along from one doctor to the next because no one has been able to help them.” But the buck stops here. Noble’s eight surgeons specialize in oral and maxillofacial procedures, treating deformities and diseases of the teeth, jaws and face. He and Dr. Patrick Morris founded OFSI in 1990 after seeing how their patients struggled with referral runaround. “We found that some other surgeons limited themselves to just one or two procedures,” Noble explains. “Patients who saw one oral surgeon for wisdom teeth removal had to find someone else for a more advanced procedure down the road. We offer a full scope of oral and maxillofacial services, from wisdom teeth removal and dental implants to TMJ disorders and facial reconstruction.” Noble’s practice is based at Mercy, where its surgeons also treat patients who arrive at the hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center with facial injuries. Noble says the idea of a one-stop oral maxillofacial surgery center has grow in the past 22 years; he and his colleagues perform everything from dental implants to TMJ surgery on-

site at any Dr. Michael Noble of its four photo by THOMAS WARWICK locations, using local or intravenous anesthesia. “There is no job too big or too small,” he says. “We take pride in our relationships with referring dentists and physicians in the community.” Education also plays an important role. The practice’s fellowship program accepts one promising young surgeon each year, and Noble wants to expand the the program to include a second fellow soon. The fellowship’s purpose is twofold: to educate young professionals and to learn from the latest professional research. “Sharing our practices with others in the field keeps us sharp as well,” he says. “We thrive in an educational environment, because if you’re constantly stuck in your own office, you have no idea if you are behind the times.” Patients receive the same level of care regardless of the procedure’s complexity. The results, Noble says, can be life-changing. A patient suffering from a lopsided jaw since birth can be ostracized and marred by low self-esteem. A successful procedure may offer confidence for the first time. “That’s the most rewarding part of the job,” he says. “Correcting a facial skeleton affects more than just jaw function—it affects their outlook on life.”

He marvels at the two standing ovations welcoming him to Busch Stadium when he joined our pitching staff in 2009: “I had never experienced anything like it in my life.” ] [ I counted at least 12 Cardinals, including David Freese and manager Mike Matheny, spending a recent day off at the Thompson Center for Autism’s annual gala at the Frontenac Hilton. Matheny told the crowd he is warning Freese not to overextend himself by accepting every invitation. Apparently Freese has trouble saying no to charities. ]

[ Kirkwood’s Bob Nelson reunited with Bill Bradley this month when the former U.S. Senator was back in his home state promoting his new book, We Can All Do Better. The two met once outside London in 1967 when Nelson was coaching the English national basketball squad and Bradley was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. Nelson recalls winning a dinner by beating Bradley—a gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympic games—at horse. Bradley went on to the New York Knicks and Nelson coached Forest Park Community College basketball for 25 years. ] [ Look for Janet Evanovich 9 a.m. June 29 at Stages St. Louis. How do you choose books? Not every book makes for a great book discussion. We try to have different genres, like the classics, nonfiction, current fiction and historical. Our library book discussion leaders meet quarterly and present titles. Then we survey members and pull the top four or so. I’m very proud of the variety we have. What I like is when someone says, I never would have read this if it wasn’t for book group. There are some books that maybe weren’t best-sellers, but they’re still great. What if a book isn’t available? The biggest challenge is when someone wants a kit, and their group is meeting tomorrow or even that afternoon. I try to find another book that will suit them if their choice

isn’t available. I ask what books have been successes, or what they’ve read in the past few months. If they’ve read nonfiction in April and heavy fiction in March, they may be ready for something lighter. Your kits are wildly popular. Some people schedule kits six months out! It’s so satisfying when customers let me know that it’s a wonderful program and they appreciate what the library is doing. I have some real regulars. Members of one Frontenac group all called me from the car while driving back from Lake of the Ozarks to reserve upcoming kits. We’re all bonded by books.

Research specialist Peggy Dimitriades knows books. And just as important, she knows book clubs. Dimitriades spends her days researching and creating book kits at the St. Louis County Library. These kits, which are available to any county resident with a library card, include enough copies of the book for club members to read, discussion guides and authors information. The program’s success has skyrocketed; the library went from offering 16 kits to 400 in just five years and now includes options for teenagers and children. When St. Louis book clubs hit a rut, Dimitriades leads them to literary gems they never would have found themselves.

You’re a big fan of the classics. Why? I love to throw out a classic. Often we hear, I read that in high school, but when you’re reading that same book at a different time in your life, it can be a different experience. I recommend things like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn or Great Expectations, books that are especially appropriate considering what the country is going through right now. It has to be asked: What’s your favorite book? One of my favorites is I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb. The relationship between the two brothers shows how strong a bond can be. The other book I love—which is not me at all—is Mystic River, because the author is so descriptive and really draws you in.

Kirkwood School District The track at Kirkwood High School has recently been dedicated to Alvin Miller, a 1983 grad and star athlete who lettered in basketball, football, and track and field. Fashion forward looks for the mothers

Nancy Lehtman used to feel like a kid in a candy store who had both hands tied behind her back. “During buying trips to New York, Chicago and Dallas, I’d usually pass up fashionforward mother-of-the-bride-and-groom dresses,” recalls Lehtman, co-owner of Distinctions. “My customers tended to be conservative about what they wore. The latest thing in New York often wouldn’t sell here.” But times have changed. Widespread access to fashion websites and blogs has closed the style gap between different parts of the country. “These days, St. Louis women are more adventurous than ever. They see a lot more than they used to, and they want to buy what they see.” Stylish moms can now find the latest looks for summer and fall weddings at Distinctions, the boutique Lehtman and her husband, Bruce, opened 25 years ago. “There were lots of shorter, knee-length dresses shown on the runway, even for evening weddings,” she says. But there are no hard and fast rules: A more formal,

‘ball gown’ look for evening weddings was also a hit with buyers. To cover all the fashion bases, some designers are offering the same dress in long, tea-length or street-length versions. “One line, Jade Couture, showed a short dress that can be lengthened with an attachment, so you can walk down the aisle in a gown then dance the night away in a shorter dress.” No matter what length you choose, the focus is on clean, sleek lines. “Embellishment was popular the last couple of seasons, but we’re not seeing too many ruffles and flourishes this time around,” Lehtman says. “Beautiful fabric and astonishing color take center stage.” ‘Pop’ colors like red, fuchsia and peony pink are the colors of choice for spring and summer; plum, bordeaux, and royal and cobalt blue are major for fall. “Black, of course, never goes out of vogue and strikes a great contrast when other members of the party wear bright colors.” Glamorous styles are also available in plus sizes, she adds. Distinctions carries a carefully edited selection of jewelry and other finishing touches, and the staff excels at helping customers create a head-to-toe look, even if they buy their accessories elsewhere. “Some people come in with eight or nine pairs of shoes, several bottles of nail polish and a sack full of jewelry!” she says. “We know how to pull it all together.” She rejects the too-casual attitude found in some retail establishments. “At many stores, you flip through the racks on your own,” she says. “Not here. My staff and I love helping women look gorgeous, and we have the expertise to make it happen. That’s why we’re still here.”

My wife-to-be’s father is a recovering alcoholic, and he’s paying for the wedding. He doesn’t want to have a bar of any kind, but I can’t imagine a reception without at least a champagne toast. How can I find a compromise? It’s a party, after all.

Krista and Dan wish they could go back to their wedding day and do it all again. “It couldn’t have been a better day,” Dan says. “Not that everything went according to plan, but everything was perfect.” The pair met when both were unwillingly dragged on a night out with their friends. It’s a good thing they gave in to that pressure, because Dan noticed her from across the room. Krista is a Nerinx Hall alum currently enrolled at Fontbonne University. Dan, a Belleville, Ill., native, graduated from Saint Louis University and now works for Stifel Nicolaus Weisel. While the couple were on a vacation in the Virgin Islands, Dan surreptitiously buried a ring box in the sand. As he pretended to ‘discover’ it, he got on one knee and proposed! From the sunny beach proposal to a winter wedding, the January day was bright and crisp, and the bride kept warm in a white fur wrap. “I wanted to customize the details, but have a traditional wedding,” Krista says. Contemporary centerpieces and a crisp color palette highlighted the clean lines and modern architecture of the Palladium. “Our wedding was such a celebration—a really great party,” she says. “Everyone was on the dance floor the whole night!”

Bill Adkison and Meg Meyer went on a very memorable first date. “We went to Millennium Park in Chicago and got to talking, and before we knew it, it was past the park’s curfew—which we didn’t even know about,” Meg says. “We found out when a cop pulled up to us, lights blaring, and yelled at us. We almost got arrested!” Instead,

they got a great story, although they refer to their second date, a Cardinals game, as the real start of their relationship. Meg and Billy met when he became her personal trainer, and then her dad’s. “When we first met, we were both in relationships, but became friends,” Meg says. “He got to know my dad really well before we even got started. In fact, it was my dad who pushed us to start dating once we were both single!” Billy proposed by creating a custom prom at the campus of Meg’s alma mater, John F. Kennedy High School. “We used to joke that we wished we’d known each other back then,” she says. “He made it so we could be prom king and queen, and he proposed with a gorgeous custom ring under twinkle lights and a disco ball!” Afterward, the surprise continued with the happy couple celebrating at a party with all their friends and family. Meg owns Meka Boutique in Chesterfield—fashion experience that led her to a special gown. “My mom, aunt and some friends went to New York with me to Kleinfeld Bridal, and gown designer Pnina Tornai was there. We ended up getting one of the only two dresses I tried, even though I had already put a down payment on a dress a few weeks before!” she says. A Sept. 15 wedding is planned. “I’m looking forward to moving in together after the wedding. We just bought the home we will start our lives in!”

The days are longer, the breezes warmer. hen I’m out here, I feel like I’m on vacation, or in heaven,” says Katie Dooley Curran. The three-season room that extends from her kitchen and overlooks her garden is homebase for family dinners, entertaining friends and catching up on reading. “The only thing I’ll never have out here is a television. almost every day, nine months a year.” The veranda includes a dining area and a cozy cluster of couches and chairs. “We move the sitting area toward the fireplace in the cooler months,” she says. “And toward the garden when it’s warm.” The contractor, André Dambrouski, found stone to match the home’s original architecture—no easy feat for a structure almost 100 years old. “I love that it flows from the original house,” she says. “I wanted to avoid the pre-fab look.” In fact, Dooley Curran, a McAfee agent, didn’t want anything to look ‘matchy-matchy.’ The mantel is constructed from refurbished wood, and an old cowboy’s bathtub has been repurposed into a cooler for drinks during parties. reminiscent of Tuscan villas. “I never use a decorator—I just want to have pieces I love and find a way to make them work together to reflect our family,” she says. The veranda is framed by gently arched doorways that mimic the home’s interior architecture. Tied-back white curtains can be closed for increasing privacy or blocking light. Ceiling fans, a fireplace and oversized heaters increase the room’s usability. “When it’s muggy, as St. Louis summers tend to be, the fans make all the difference, both shooing away bugs and keeping it reasonably cool,” she says. “And when we bring the heaters out in cooler months, they, combined with the fireplace, create a cozy nook that we can use as late as Thanksgiving.” ‘The veranda experience,’ as the Currans fondly call it, is becoming a favorite of friends and neighbors, as well as of the family. “Everyone knows if they drive past the house and see us outside, we love it when they pop in,” she says. “It feels like a celebration and an escape, whether it’s a party or an unexpected hour with a friend.”

[ protecting our assets ] Getting rid of spider veins and sun spots will be temporary if we don’t guard the skin with sunscreen. “Tanning damages DNA,” says Dr. Joseph Muccini of MidAmerica Skin Health & Vitality Center. “Any exposed skin, including arms and legs, needs protection. Lack of protection not only creates cosmetic damage, but also can cause skin cancer, including deadly melanoma.” Recent research indicates almost no one uses sunscreen properly. “Most people apply only 25 to 50 percent of the amount needed, reducing effective protection by half,” Muccini notes. They also neglect to reapply it. “You should slather on another coat every two hours.” SPF rating applies only to ultraviolet (UVB) rays. “For complete protection, the product label should read ‘broad-spectrum,’” Muccini says. Even then, the SPF number denotes protection for a level of sun intensity: the higher the rating, the more protection. But here’s where the need to reapply comes in. “An SPF of 8 has much less protection than an SPF of 70, but at the end of two hours without reapplication, both are gone and you will burn,” he explains. People who love the look of a bronze glow can use a self-tanning cream or opt for a spray tan, Muccini advises. “But don’t forget, you still need to apply sunscreen.”

[ help for aging hands ] [ saddlebag thighs ] Diet and exercise can make us smaller, but they can’t really change our basic shape. “If you inherited your mother’s thighs, no amount of working out will make much of a difference,” explains Dr. Michele Koo of the Aesthetic Surgery Institute. The inner and outer thighs are the least amenable to diet and exercise, she adds. “For women with a genetic link to fat deposits in the thighs, that area will be the first to show weight gain and the last to show loss,” she says. “Removing fat cells with liposuction is 95 percent of the solution, and the only way to change the basic shape.” Liposuction can make an enormous difference in decreasing thigh circumference, Koo notes. To remedy skin laxity, a thigh lift may also be needed. “Each woman must be evaluated individually to determine the correct procedure,” she says. Resolving those stubborn fat deposits gives women the shape they want—and the confidence to wear pants and slim skirts with pride.

We tend to pamper our faces and forget about our hands. But nothing spoils a youthful look like veiny, age-splotched hands. The bright light hits the pigment and damages it, making the body reabsorb it. It gets darker for a few days, then flakes and fades. Sometimes it takes two treatments, but it’s a great fix. For volume loss in the face and hands, we use platelet-rich plasma. The patient’s own blood platelets are injected

under the skin and then massaged into the hollow places. Over two to three months, it stimulates the body to rebuild collagen, making the skin more robust and less transparent. For fast results, we use fillers, favoring Radiesse because it lasts up to a year. We inject it between the cords in the back of the hand, and then massage it to distribute it. Dr. Helen Tadjalli, Plastic Surgery International The two biggest problems women have with their hands are brown spots and the ‘skeletonized’ look that highlights bones and veins. For the brown spots, we offer skin lightening products like hydroquinone, which paired with meticulous sunscreen use, bleaches and fades spots over time. For darker and more widespread spots, we recommend a medium-depth chemical peel to slough off the epidermis, take away much of the pigment, and strengthen the dermis layer. A laser can target and spot-treat larger dark spots. For the skeleton look, we favor fat grafting. Fat is harvested from one area of the body, and injected into the areas between the tendons on the back of the hand to decrease their prominence. One session is good for most people.

[ legs, not road maps ] Spider veins run in families and can be made worse by long hours on our feet. But with help from technology, almost everyone can enjoy smoother legs by summer. Dr. Mark Blumenthal, The Vein Center and CosMed Spider veins seem to be related to estrogen, because they affect 60 to 75 percent of the female population. They’re caused when pressure from deeper blood vessels with weak valves allows blood to flow backward from the deep veins to the skin. Spider veins can range in size from hair-width to 2 millimeters in diameter.

Lasers work on small facial vessels, but they don’t help leg veins. The gold standard for those is injection sclerotherapy, injecting an irritant solution into the veins with a fine needle to cause scarring and blockage, after which the vein is gradually reabsorbed. The procedure requires a lot of experience and skill. A novice might inject too strong a solution or too much solution—or miss the vein and inject the skin, which leads to ulceration and scarring. After injection, compression for several days, either with tape or stockings, keeps the veins clamped down while the solution does its work. Dr. Ricardo Rao, Midwest Vein Center Sclerotherapy is the only solution that really works. People with a lot of spider veins may need follow-up treatments. A few months after sclerotherapy, the skin color should look homogeneous, soft and supple. Clients should avoid sun exposure on newly treated legs and avoid heavy exercise for five to seven days to prevent blood from being forced back into the veins while they’re shutting down.

Question: I recently had a hearing test and was diagnosed with otosclerosis. What is this condition and what are my options?

Answer:

Otosclerosis is a condition of the middle ear that can cause conductive hearing loss. Symptoms frequently begin in early adulthood and progress gradually with age. A small percent of the population is reported to be affected by otosclerosis. Women are affected more often than men, and genetics play a role in the inheritance of the disease. The etiology of the disease is unknown, but it has been linked to viruses such as measles. German composer Beethoven was thought to have been afflicted by otosclerosis. Sound is a pressure wave that vibrates the ear drum through three small bones called ossicles. These bones transmit the mechanical energy of ear drum movement from the aerated middle ear to the fluid-filled inner ear. The third ossicle, called stapes, acts as a piston to transmit the acoustic signal to the cochlea which contains the organ of hearing. In otosclerosis, there is typically abnormal bone remodeling that inhibits movement of the stapes resulting in the failure to perceive sound.

Diagnosis of otosclerosis is confirmed with an audiogram - a test where conductive hearing loss is demonstrated by absent stapedial reflexes using tympanograms. The word recognition score, a measure of the ability to understand amplified speech, is usually excellent in the affected ear and a physical exam demonstrates a normal appearance to the ear drum and middle ear. Treatment options for hearing loss related to otosclerosis depend on severity. If the level of hearing loss is not bothersome to the patient, observation is acceptable. However, to help restore lost hearing, conventional hearing aids are an option. For a more permanent solution, laser stapedotomy is an outpatient surgical procedure that replaces the fixed stapes with a prosthesis. The surgery is 90% successful at significantly improving hearing, but surgical risks include taste disturbance, hearing loss and vertigo. The procedure takes approximately one to two hours and patients can go home the same day. Making the right choice keeps us in integrity; the wrong choice offers us the opportunity to learn something about ourselves. When I work with kids on learning from their mistakes, I like to have them walk through the experience step by step. I ask them to identify the point at which their alarms went off. When were they aware of their internal justice system or conscience? I want them to become aware of how they experience this internal alarm. For Andrew, the first alarm went off when he got the call to go cruising around the park. He’d heard that these guys car-hopped, so he knew trouble was likely. The second time his alarms sounded was when the first guy broke a car window. Andrew felt the alarm as a pounding heart and sweaty palms. Other signals might be getting a pit in your stomach, a tightened chest, racing thoughts, or a generalized feeling of anxiety. The next step was to figure out why Andrew ignored his alarms that night.

Being a 15-year-old freshman at an all-boys high school meant having no friends and feeling lonely. In his mind that night, the choices were: ignore the alarm and go along with the break-in, stay home alone and feel like a loser, or refuse to participate and feel lame. He chose to go out because he wanted to make new friends. Knowing why you ignore your alarms helps you prevent it from happening again. After that night, Andrew decided he’d join a winter sports team and a school club. If he made some connections, he wouldn’t feel so needy, lonely and desperate. Then he made some commitments about what he’d do differently next time. It’s also important for kids to realize how they feel in integrity versus out of integrity. And even though it makes sense not to want to disappoint parents, a better motivation is not to disappoint yourself. Psychologist Laurence Kohlberg describes the six stages of moral development—the motivations for doing the right thing. They are, in ascending order: 1. Avoid punishment 2. Get rewarded 3. Please others 4. Obeying a rule 5. Considering the needs of others and the community 6. Having a personal code of behavior and following it The stick-and-carrot approach to parenting creates a lot of level one through four behaviors. Instead of reacting to mistakes with a litany of lectures and punishments, walk through the experience as I did with Andrew. Help your kids learn from their mistakes.

I work with interesting people and young people, who keep me in tune with the times. ORIGINS Born in Santiago, Chile, the son of two great artists who founded the Chilean National Ballet. I am the proud father of a beautiful daughter, Michelle, and grandfather to two precious grandchildren, Owen and Ivy. WHEN I GROW UP As a youngster, I secretly wanted to be an actor. I never thought I’d become a dancer like my parents. THE BOY I USED TO BE People who knew me in high school would describe me as passionate, temperamental, intense and fun. FIRST JOB I helped with grocery buying and taught water skiing at a resort my family visited every summer. TURNING POINT I realized dance was my passion when I was 17 and discovered it anew through my girlfriend. EDUCATION Graduated from high school in Chile with a bachillerato en biologia, then trained at the University of Chile’s ballet school. After that, I attended Juilliard School of Music, School of American Ballet and Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York City. CAREER PATH I danced with several major companies, including Jose Limon and Joffrey Ballet, before establishing the Hartford Ballet in Hartford, Conn., where I served as artistic director for 20 years. From there, I became artistic director of Ballet Arizona until 1999, then spent time as a guest teacher, choreographer and artistic adviser all over the world. I came to Dance St. Louis in 2006. AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT I’ve always been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. When doors opened, I walked through and made the most of it. FAVORITE DANCERS Seeing Rudolf Nureyev perform changed my outlook on how dance should be seen and approached. Among living choreographers, I love Paul Taylor and Jiri Kylian. ADVICE TO YOUNG DANCERS Give it your all, but set a realistic timetable. Do not wait too long for something to happen. It can frustrate you and destroy your greatest assets. People here are willing to help you try the untried and unusual. TIME TO UNWIND At the end of a demanding day, I enjoy music, solitude and a good movie or stupid, inconsequential TV show. IDEAL SATURDAY NIGHT I’d attend a great dance performance followed by a great dinner, then cuddle up with the person I love. FAVORITE MOVIE I have many, but Close Encounters of the Third Kind always fascinates me because of the possibilities it presents. A few years ago, I was helping a panel announce the nominees for the Kevin Kline Awards on KWMU’s Friday morning arts program. As we unscrolled the names of the nominees, we paused to take a phone call from a listener. The listener was Colin Graham, the late artistic director of Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Graham wanted to know why there were no Kevin Kline Awards for opera. After all, opera is theater, as the name of his own company makes clear. If the Klines are honoring the best theater in St. Louis, certainly they should be honoring opera. One does not brush Mr. Graham aside. The folks from the Klines did their best to explain the difficulties they saw in making arrangements for judging and honoring opera, but he was not satisfied. It was not, I was told, the first time he had raised the issue. In honoring his memory and his wisdom, I think it appropriate to point out in a theater column that, although the season of the Repertory Theatre is over, you’re still likely to see some of the best theater in St. Louis right now on their stage in the Loretto-Hilton Center on the Webster University campus. The students there refer to opera season as Brigadoon—a tent arises, flowers sprout from the ground, happy picnickers cover the hillside for a few brief weeks, and then it all goes away. If Opera Theatre is always theater, it may be even more so this year. For the second time, the company is producing one of Stephen Sondheim’s creations. Sondheim is Broadway’s most honored creator of musical theater. But he’s

showing up more and more frequently in opera houses, further erasing the always vague line between Broadway and the Met. OTSL is tackling Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, with Tony-winner Karen Ziemba playing Mrs. Lovett, to blur things further. I have always found Sweeney Todd a very curious piece. Hugh Wheeler adapted the libretto from a Victorian melodrama, one with more than the usual excesses of Victorian melodrama. I have always wondered how seriously Sondheim meant us to take this piece. I’ve heard—I don’t know if it’s true—that he complained audiences weren’t laughing at performances. Sweeney Todd does, like all Sondheim, have gorgeous music, and the St. Louis Symphony will be in the pit playing it. We’ll see how the audience takes it. Speaking of melodrama, Opera Theatre has already begun performances of Bizet’s Carmen, about as rousing a piece of theater as you’ll find. And it was originally done with spoken dialogue. So maybe it’s really a musical. St. Louis native Kendall Gladen, originally discovered by Opera Theatre when she was at Roosevelt High School and initially trained in Opera Theatre’s artist-in-training program, is singing the role of Carmen. That great writer of dramatic comedy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, will be represented by his Cosi fan tutte, really a rather cruel story— like most comedy— about the way two men treat the women they claim to love. Perhaps the strangest show of all will be the American premiere of composer Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland, with libretto by David Henry Hwang, another Broadway veteran. It’s all theater, all the time, at Opera Theatre of St. Louis.

This is one place that has really aged well. Contemporary in a masculine, dark-wood way, J. Buck’s has gotten a culinary face-lift with a new dining room menu that features more local food and identifies where many of the provisions come from. Also new is the dinner format, which is basically complete meals consisting of soup or salad, entree with a complement of sides and a small dessert. You can still get a burger or sandwich in the dining room, but you’ll have to request the bar menu. Also a la carte is a series of small-plate appetizers for about $8 to $10. A couple of our first courses were noteworthy, namely the Caesar salad and a chunky tomato soup of the day. The salad had fresh, crisp romaine lettuce dotted with pretzel bread croutons, thick-shaved parmesan and creamy anchovy dressing. It also had a house-made cheese wafer: crisp, salty and pungent. And those croutons were, no doubt, made from the

leftover house bread, a delicious round pretzel loaf with big-grain salt crystals on top. The tomato soup was deliciously chunky and sweet, with strands of fresh basil and plenty of cream. This is mostly a meat-and-potatoes kind of place. Even the fish dishes tend to be hearty. Starches and greens come with just about every dish, which makes the pricing more palatable. My half-rack of ribs, at $22, had a full plate of fries and coleslaw. A Strip Steak (12 ounces for $32, 16 ounces for $40) was deliciously marbled and rich-tasting, and the potatoes were laden with butter and gouda cheese. It also came with sauteed green beans, but they had that earthy, almost musty flavor that beans can have; I would have preferred the more delicate French beans. The ribs were delicious, with a thick coating of Kansas City-style sauce: a little spicy, a little sweet,

a little smoky and a lot of flavor. The ribs themselves were fairly meaty and done very crisp, almost charred, so the fat burned off. The accompanying slaw was crisp and fresh-tasting, with celery seeds, mayo—and not quite enough salt and pepper. An order of Pan-Roasted Great Lakes Walleye ($32) was a very clean-tasting fish with light breading and a medley of tasty summer squash and artichoke leaves. There were supposed to be fingerling potatoes and napa cabbage in the mix, but I didn’t detect any. It all sat on a colorful red pepper coulis that was quite good, with a pleasant, mild flavor. Dessert consists of tiny cordial-glass-sized confections like Oreo mousse, chocolate mousse, raspberry cheesecake, etc., just to give diners a few bites of sweets at the end of their meal. They were fine for that purpose, but certainly not memorable.

Tequila has a bad reputation. The ‘salt, shot, lime’ is fun in its time and place, but fine tequila is a sipping liqueur, even approaching cognac or scotch. Tequila is distilled from the blue agave plant. Cheap tequilas are required to have just 51 percent blue agave, with the remainder being from any other sugars. Fine tequila is made from 100 percent blue agave, so look for that on the bottle. Silver, or blanco, tequilas are bottled immediately, postdistillation. Reposado tequilas spend between 60 days and one year in oak barrels. Añejo tequilas spend up to three years in barrel. Extra Añejo tequilas spend more than three years in barrel, and these represent the best sipping tequilas.

mezcal leaps onto the scene

Although similar to tequila, mezcal has its own identity. Tequila comes from the Jalisco region of Mexico, while Mezcal hails primarily from Oaxaca, and the two possess entirely different flavor profiles. Mezcal begins with a different type of agave plant and then is smoked. It still may be labeled as reposado or añejo if it meets the correct aging requirements, but it always exhibits that smoky quality. Try a mezcal if the opportunity arises; I think you’ll be surprised.

group of British seniors searching for a more palatable golden years experience. Especially entertaining (and endearing) is Dev Patel as Sonny, the proprietor of the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful. His plan is to “outsource aging” because “there are lots of places, not just England, where they don’t like old people.” His limitless supply of positive energy is inspiring, even if it’s unrealistic, and I plan to embrace his mantra: Everything will be alright in the end, so if it’s not alright, it is not yet the end. Ron Gingerich says. “When I bought it, it was just cement floors and outer walls, and it was up to us to design a floor plan and choose finishes.” He and his fiancee, Liz Rinehart, along with designer Karen Pepper, architect Tyler Stephens and developer Bruce Korn, worked on creating a style that bridged the gap between the traditional and the modern. Gingerich first moved into a different condo at The Crescent in 2008. “It was pretty quiet back then,” he says, since the building wasn’t yet totally occupied. “Now, we see our neighbors all the time. We’ll run into them at dinner and end up joining them. There’s a great sense of community.” The couple spends part of the year in South Beach, Miami and wanted to bring some of the mod design sensibilities to St. Louis. Using the curved, contemporary architecture of The Crescent as a guide, the team created an open floor plan that makes the most of the space and is great for entertaining. The entry opens to a three-sided fireplace and partial art wall that divides a sitting room from the larger living room and kitchen. “The dividing wall is surrounded by marble

stone from Madagascar called labradorite, which has a different palette, from gold and bronze to blues and greens, depending on your angle,” Gingerich says. Since the kitchen flows directly into the main living room, the couple wanted the cabinets to have the feel of furniture. “There’s a pillow effect on the cabinet faces, and the Italian marble used for the counters was also custom-cut into tiles for the floor and backsplash,” Rinehart says. “But the coolest feature is how the white panels are cut from crystalline quartz, and they are backlit with LED lights, which creates a great ambience.” Most of the home has floor-to-ceiling windows, and a wraparound terrace is fully covered and provides views of downtown Clayton. The home is wired with Savant and Lutron lighting, automatic shades, and music and television controlled by an all-in-one tablet remote. The two bedroom suites are at either end of the home. The master suite includes a sitting room, bedroom and two large closets. “One closet is nearly 300 square feet, and the other is custom designed to be like Carrie’s dream closet in the Sex and the City movie,” says Gingerich—a wonderful wedding present for the bride-to-be.

Even without this, the revised house feels like a Cotswold manor and looks far more distinctive and romantic than where we started.
