[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] I always get a little thrill when St. Louis makes the national news, as it did last week in a road rage survey (AutoVantage’s 2014 ‘In the Driver’s Seat’ survey). It probably won’t surprise many St. Louisans to learn that our city was ranked No. 3 in having the most polite drivers. If you grew up in another big city, like me, you realize pretty quickly that we have it good here. For one thing, I would argue that in most metropolises, you could run out of gas waiting for another driver to wave you in ahead of him in traffic. And slowing down to figure out exactly where you’re supposed to turn (or while you’re looking for an address), well, in New York that earned me a surly Learn how to drive! and plenty of horn honking. Speaking of honking, let’s just say you hear it frequently in Chicago (my hometown), but not in St. Louis—unless, of course, it’s coming from a native Chicagoan. In fact, most people I’ve honked at here—say, to notify them that the light has, indeed, turned green—have waved amicably through the rear-view mirror, as if to say, Sorry. (Now who looks like a jerk?) Interestingly, the survey rankings were calculated based on a ‘discourtesy score’—things like shaking a fist at another driver, cursing, obscene gestures, etc. I haven’t really seen those behaviors here, but then, I guess the operative word is seen.

WE’RE SORRY | In our May 7 issue on p. 26, we cited incorrect information for the annual Charity Polo match to benefit Epworth Children & Family Services, which takes place June 7 at Kraftig Polo Club in Defiance, Mo. Also in that issue, on p.f12, a quote referred to HealthLink Inc. as Health Link of Illinois and incorrectly referenced a company bankruptcy. Healthlink has not declared bankruptcy, rather its client, the state of Illinois, is on a ‘late payment schedule,’ resulting in delayed reimbursement for doctors.

The film, directed by MIKE GAULDONI and co-produced by ZACH WHITE, focuses on a group of homeless people who set up camp along the Mississippi River after being rousted from the tunnels under Tucker Boulevard. Gauldoni and White followed the group for a year as they tried to build a community despite harsh winter weather and threats from the city to clear the area. The filmmakers graduated from St. Charles High School and Lindenwood University. Gualdoni is now a producer at Wyoming PBS; White works for Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta.

TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.

Students with special needs and a taste for terpsichore have been served since 2005 by Access the Arts, a unique program STAGES developed in response to parent concerns that their kids had limited opportunities to participate in performing arts. It has since blossomed, now serving some 450 children annually. Recently, the Centene Inclusion Project ponied up $120,000 to increase the program’s scope even further. Access the Arts has helped enable children with physical, cognitive, and developmental challenges—including Down syndrome, visual impairments and autism—to display their singing, dancing and dramatic skills and enjoy performing for others. The initiative also helps blur the line between the ‘special’ kids and ‘regular’ students. For students interested in Access the Arts programs, STAGES offers a variety of courses at the Performing Arts Academy in Chesterfield. The goal is inclusion through performance, with an ad hoc troupe rehearsing and putting on a musical revue of Broadway hits for family, friends and other students. The county courts complex in Clayton is on its way to becoming bigger and better. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held recently for the new family courts building at Bonhomme and Meramec avenues, which is expected to open in late 2016. The $122 million project includes improvements to the existing courthouse, as well. At these prices, that’s no mere face-lift. But much needs to be done, including new elevators. The foundation of the 44-year-old building is crumbling. Wiring needs to be replaced throughout. Electronic infrastructure badly needs updating to better accommodate digital media. Meanwhile, bringing family courts into the complex just makes sense. Presently, they are in their own building, on Brentwood Boulevard a half-mile or so away; the revamp will connect the new family building to the overhauled courthouse via a bridge across South Meramec Avenue. Danforth Plant Science Center is growing like a weed. Established in Creve Coeur in 1998, the center will become an even more sophisticated nexus for botanical research, to the tune of $45 million. A three-story building addition, slated to open in fall of 2015, will give the center the capacity to house more than 100 additional researchers. It will include flexible research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, as well as core facilities and additional growth chamber space.

OF THE

Officials say the new section, just to the west of and attached to the existing building, will improve the capacity for high-level science in crop improvement, bioenergy, sustainable agriculture and plant biology. Once not worthy of a second glance, the triangular plots at the intersection of Kirkham and North Gore avenues have morphed into the Webster Groves Sculpture Garden. And a pretty, inviting area it is indeed. At least five works are situated in a meticulously designed and landscaped grassy area. Winding walkways, plantings, gentle hillocks and rock walls have made a small area seem much, much larger. From west to east, its theme could be ‘taking flight.’ There’s a grouping of mosaic eggs near the western end, and on a small rise farther east is a commission by Catharine Magel of a bird that seems to be emerging from a flower, all a-glitter in the colorful tiles and mirrored surfaces typical of her work. At the easternmost point is a tall,

WEBSTER GROVES

pewter-tone metal weather vane that evokes the old windmills so common throughout the Midwest. Its spires look like hawk feathers ruffled by the wind. Interspersed are saplings and young trees to supplement the half-dozen or so mature trees, about four of them catalpa, that for years were the only notable features of the site. Come and ‘set’ a spell, or take a short walk. You won’t get nearly as tired as you would on a visit to, say, Laumeier Sculpture Park. Almost 30 feet tall, the sign over the box office is synonymous with ‘vintage’: Tivoli. It turned 90 years old on May 10 and doesn’t look a day older than, well, 90. The venerable theater on Delmar Boulevard in

the U. City Loop has experienced several revivals over the years. Its name changed for awhile in the 1960s to the Magic Lantern. Over time and through several owners, its condition deteriorated. It was looking rough by 1994, with parts of the four-story building condemned. But (guess who) entrepreneur and tireless civic booster Joe Edwards came to the rescue. About $2 million, many tears, and much blood and sweat later, the gem was lovingly restored, some would say above and beyond its former glory. Technology, for one thing, had advanced considerably over two or three generations. And the trend in movie theaters was the multi-multiplex: Ronnie’s 20 and its (their?) ilk. The Tivoli expanded from one to three screens. And it found a niche beyond the latest blockbuster exploding from a comic book: The art film and the latest independent title that got tongues wagging at Sundance, with a few mainstream movies (natch) sprinkled in between. What could be more fitting to celebrate this sparkling, spry old-timer than a screening of Meet Me in St. Louis? (That was Sunday. Aw, missed it? No worries. You can get the video at Blockbuster … um, rent it on Netflix.) BTW, the beloved classic marks its 70th anniversary this year. Tree trimmers can get some pretty good peeps into upstairs windows—they might even be able to spy the family jewels … literally. We’re talking nearly 80 grand in watches and other pricey knickknacks that vanished from a Ladue home, a crime to which an opportunistic knucklehead confessed. He denied it at first, then cops showed him his picture on surveillance cameras—at jewelry stores where he’d gone to fence his ill-gotten booty. Criminal minds don’t seem to process that sort of BGO information (Blinding Glimpse of the Obvious). At any rate, he used a pry bar on a door to gain entry, but the victim was able to recover much of it. Criminy, how careful do you have to be in vetting prospective contractors? This lamebrain was referred by a relative, who’s probably been checking and double-checking ever since to make sure nothing is missing in their place! (‘Knucklehead’ and ‘lamebrain’ are technical terms for describing anyone who hasn’t a clue how easy it is to be found out … although the cops may use more colorful language.)

District into summer. Much of the route, most notably in Kirkwood, U. City, Olivette and Clayton, is former railroad right-of-way converted for walking and cycling. (Chances are slim that the railroads will need the corridors back.) Trails have been completed and are under development in St. Louis and in the county to the south, east, west and north. Florissant has enjoyed a surge in cyclists in Sunset Park and Old Town Florissant since the district completed the Sunset Greenway in 2010. To give cycling enthusiasts a chance to take a break on their expeditions, the Rotary Club of Florissant recently installed 10 new bicycle racks throughout Historic Old Town Florissant. Kudos— not only does this give visitors a chance to suspend all that go-go-go; it gives them pause to rest, stroll … and shop-shop-shop. Never let it be said that our fair city doesn’t know how to fete its veterans. During the recent Memorial Day holiday, in addition to the usual festivities, the Compton Heights Concert Band kicked off its 2014 season of free concerts in Tower Grove Park. The afternoon of patriotic music was enjoyed by folks from all around, as have been the volunteer band’s concerts since 1976. And the Boy Scouts performed their patriotic duty by marking each of the nearly 190,000 headstones at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery with small flags in a gesture of honor for those who have served.

I SAW MY FRIEND’S TEENAGER SMOKING. SHOULD I SAY SOMETHING?

—LIGHTING UP

PATTY: Keep your mouth shut. Now, before I start hearing from everyone about the evils of smoking, I would like a show of hands from anyone who did not smoke at least one cigarette as a teenager. OK, those who did not raise their hands clearly lived in some sort of a bubble or iron lung. Parents will know if their child is a smoker. All any mom or dad needs to do is take a good whiff of their clothing to determine if and what they have been smoking. They don’t need you to tell them. RASCHELLE: I will raise my hand high, Patty. I have never smoked a cigarette ever in my life, which has not been spent in an iron lung. Yes, I chewed tobacco on a dare in the eighth grade, but that’s a different story for a different time. And trust me, I learned a lesson there. Ordinarily I am all for it taking a village to raise a kid, but not in this case. You don’t have enough information to do anything. I agree with Patty, despite her disparaging remarks about life in a bubble. I encourage you to think through the next couple of steps here. OK, you tell the parents, then what—you feel better? What if your friend says, “Yes, I know. It’s helping him kick his heroin habit.” Then what? You end up looking ridiculous. I’d skip telling; you simply don’t know what they know.

Almost everyone offers cremation. Offering on-site cremation puts us in a class of our own. Nowadays, it’s very common

AFTER MANY YEARS, MY FRIEND IS BACK OUT THERE DATING. THE PROBLEM IS, SHE HAS NOT UPDATED HER WARDROBE OR HER HAIRSTYLE IN 30 YEARS. HOW CAN I SUGGEST A MAKEOVER?

—WHAT NOT TO WEAR

PATTY: You can’t suggest anything—unless, of course, you can get her on the TLC show What Not to Wear, but I heard that’s going off the air. I consider myself a direct person. Some might say I am blunt. But even I draw the line at commenting on what my friends are wearing, either on their bodies or their heads. (Although I have been known to raise an eyebrow at some of the more outrageous ensembles, however with the amount of Botox in my forehead, even that’s hard to do now.) I just have to believe that if I’m friends with someone, there is a man out there who will see past the unattractive clothing and permed hair. Yes, I am married, so I have no idea what the dating world is really like. So Raschelle, what do you think?

cremation services. You might not know that cremation and on-site cremation are two very on-site crematory is just another way we guarantee that your loved one’s care is always in reach and near to our hearts.

RASCHELLE: Oh blech, dating; it is just as awful as you think it is. I only do it so I can have material for this column and for girls’ nights (yes fellas, I do kiss and tell—and sorry, I’m not sorry). Now that that’s off my chest, I do think you have to help her—that’s what friends are for. But I wouldn’t make it about ‘getting a man’ or how she looks. I would make it more about taking care of herself during this new phase of life. You know, suggesting she update her wardrobe because she deserves it, or getting a new hairstyle to match her new carefree life. And go with her and maybe update your own look; like Gandhi, I say, Be the change you want to see. >> PATTY HANNUM DOES ADMIT TO INHALING AND ONLY HOPES HER MOM IS NOT READING THIS COLUMN OR SHE WILL BE PERMANENTLY GROUNDED. >> IF IT’S TRUE THAT RASCHELLE BURTON HAS NEVER SMOKED A CIGARETTE (AND YES, IT IS TRUE), THEN DOES IT MEAN SHE’S NEVER INHALED?

I D❤! KRISTA MALLETTE & JOHN RONSTON] by stephanie zeilenga | photos by kurt hutchinson

11 | 03 | 2013

IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A QUICK MEET-AND-GREET over drinks at Robust Wine Bar, but when St. Louisan Krista Mallette met Richmond, Va., native John Ronston for a blind date arranged by a mutual friend, the evening lasted hours. A year later, John proposed on an anniversary trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. This past autumn, the couple wed at Washington University’s Graham Chapel. Unbeknownst to the wedding guests, scattered throughout the church was the student a capella group The Mosaic Whispers, who burst out in ‘Marry You’ by Bruno Mars as the wedding party walked down the aisle. “We kept it absolutely secret, even from the bridesmaids and groomsmen,” Krista says. Inspired by a family love story, Krista and John chose a vintage theme for their wedding day. “My great-grandparents were madly in love with each other,” Krista says. “They met when they were young and their devotion was endless. My great-grandmother embroidered handkerchiefs for my greatgrandfather’s suits, so John took one down the aisle, and I carried one she embroidered for herself.” Additionally, Krista’s bouquet was made of vintage brooches from her great-grandmother and other beloved relatives. Following the ceremony, guests dined on comfort food and danced to DJ Raven Fox at the Hilton Ballpark ballroom, with views of the sun setting over the arch. The Ronstons live in St. Louis, where Krista is the development director for Logos School and John is a trader at Wells Fargo.

HOSPITALS ARE FERTILE GROUND for romance on the small screen, but sometimes sparks fly there in real life, too. In 2010, Pennsylvania native Danielle Cichowic and South Korea-born Dr. John Chi met in the operating room at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she was a nurse and he was a surgical resident. “We were stuck in the same room together for many hours,” Danielle says. “One day after class he asked me out.” Their relationship bloomed in Philadelphia, then Cleveland, where the pair got engaged before moving to St. Louis last year. This summer, the couple will have a quiet church ceremony at St. Clare of Assisi in Ellisville with two friends attending as witnesses. Afterward, they’ll head to Pennsylvania for a big ceremony and wedding at Hotel Hershey, the lavish hotel built by chocolate baron Milton Hershey in the 1930s. “I grew up about an hour from there, and John grew up two hours from there, so it’s a nice middle point,” Danielle says. At the rehearsal dinner, the bride and groom will don traditional Korean attire for a Paebaek ceremony, a Korean marriage custom. The next day, they will exchange vows in the hotel’s garden, followed by a cocktail hour on the patio and reception in the ballroom. “It’s like the inside of a castle,” Danielle says. “We’re going for romantic and elegant, but still fun. The ballroom is gorgeous and we’re going to use lots of pastels and bright colors.” Danielle and John will honeymoon in Napa, Calif. “We go every year, and we stay at Bardessono,” Danielle says. “Napa is

KEVIN KATON WAS MISERABLE. For more than 20 years he endured pounding headaches, repeated sinus infections, sleep apnea and relentless facial pain and pressure. His nasal passages were so blocked, he could barely draw a breath. “I had chronic sinusitis, and it was like a severe head cold that never went away,” recalls the 51-year-old forecast analyst from South County. “I went to two different doctors and had two surgeries, but they didn’t fix what was wrong.” He was still miserable, suffering up to five severe sinus infections a year and popping antibiotics like they were M&M’s. Then he heard about Saint Louis University Sinus Institute. “Kevin’s previous surgery had been incomplete—he had anatomical abnormalities in his nose that hadn’t been addressed,” says Dr. Jastin Antisdel, director of the Institute and a member of SLUCare, the physicians of Saint Louis University. “Plus, like most people with sinusitis, he had multiple factors contributing to his condition, including allergies, that needed to be taken into consideration.” Antisdel, chief of the division of rhinology and sinus surgery at SLU, tailored a plan to Katon’s unique needs. “We took care of his structural issues via minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, and we adjusted his medication,” he says. “That did the trick: he hasn’t had problems in more than a year.” SLU Sinus Institute treats the complete range of sinus problems, from nasal blockage, allergies, recurrent infections, deviated septums and nasal polyps, to brain and eye tumors that can be accessed through the nose. “SLU has been the undisputed regional leader in sinonasal care and surgery for more than 30 years,” says Antisdel, who practices at SLUCare’s midtown offices and Mercy St. Louis. “Our medical

and surgical expertise are nationally recognized, and our status as a major research institution allows us to incorporate the latest developments in endoscopic surgery, computer navigation, sublingual immunotherapy and other innovative approaches.” The institute is known for its accessibility and individualized approach to patient care, Antisdel notes. “We understand that patients are experiencing discomfort or even pain, so our nurse practitioner can see them on a same-day basis and direct them to the best treatment,” he says. Treatment can vary greatly from patient to patient, he adds: “Sinus issues can be tremendously complex—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to sinusitis, for example. There can be many contributing factors, including immune dysfunction and structural abnormalities. But it takes an expert to understand, diagnose and treat these factors correctly, safely and effectively. We deliver that expertise, resulting in the best possible outcomes for patients under our care.” Patients like Kevin Katon. “Thanks to Dr. Antisdel and his team at the Sinus Institute, I can breathe again,” he says. “The headaches are gone, the sleep apnea is gone, and I can taste and enjoy food once again. And for the first time in more than 20 years, I got through the entire winter without a single sinus infection.”

VETERAN CHEF JOHN O’BRIEN (Table Three, Balaban’s, The Ritz-Carlton, King Louie’s and more) has taken over a free-standing building just west of Kingshighway Boulevard that once housed a rollicking Harry’s Bar. What he has created, much to his credit, is a kind of gourmet neighborhood tavern without the hubbub of the usual TV-strewn sports bar. That makes sense, given the orientation of the place—its name refers to the 1804 date when St. Louis passed from Spanish to French to American jurisdiction, and O’Brien’s menu (and décor) is based on that heritage. The dining room has reclaimed wood wine stacks at one end, warm cinnamon walls and padded chairs. An entire wall is devoted to an old map of the times and a few portraits of founding fathers in vintage frames; it’s cool. The menu is fascinating, with heritage homestyle dishes like Indian fry bread, Monte Cristo sandwiches, pork croquettes, biscuits, hasty pudding and skillet-fried chicken. And because they are so

well-executed, they’re both interesting and delicious (and moderately priced). A starter ‘salad’ of sliced salmon and trout ($12.25) had house-smoked fish with capers, fingerling potatoes, mustard seeds and pickled red onions on a few leaves of butter lettuce. The fish was superb, with a subtle smokiness and delicate flavors. The vinegary onions dominated, the classic complement to fish prepared this way, and the whole effect was entirely pleasant. The Heirloom Pork Mixed Grill ($18) served up superior pork (‘heirloom’ indicates the meat comes from an animal that has remained genetically stable for generations) in a brined chop, cured cheek meat and roasted loin meat. The thick chop, wrapped in bacon, had great flavor, even though I found it a little over-cooked/dry. It sat on a dab of apple chutney-like pudding that added the requisite sweet element that goes so well with pork. The cheek yielded a few bites of crusty, fat-laden meat. The coup de grace was the chunk of loin, the meat almost sticky on the outside and

turkey, Swiss cheese and ham dipped into beaten egg and sauteed in butter and sometimes sprinkled with powdered sugar.

red-roasted inside. Great flavor and texture. While this (and other entrees) was a big serving, I prefer a veggie of some kind with all that meat. But dishes here are strictly a la carte; sides are offered at about $5 to $6. My order of Lyonnaise Potatoes ($5) was, hands-down, among the finest I’ve had: layered slices of potato, beautifully crisped on both sides, topped with caramelized onions—memorable. The trout entrée ($17.50) was a sizable fish with delicious flavor—very fresh-tasting and moist. It had a light, lemony sauce with chopped marcona almonds, lingonberries and herbs and came with ‘horseradish flan,’ a creamy dip with mild bite. A seafood and grits entrée in pan sauce ($19.75) was memorable, its two jumbo scallops and two shrimp deliciously pan-browned and caked with seasoning. They sat attractively atop a bed of creamy grits with bits of spicy tasso ham and a pool of the dish’s cooking juices. Do not miss the flourless cake here ($7), more like rich fudge than cake.

TAKE A PAL! Ted Drewes

JIM BUTZ AS HENRY V

by bob wilcox

FRONT &CENTER

FOR A MAN WHO HAD ALMOST NO SAY about who would govern him, Shakespeare was fascinated by kings. Who was a good king, who was a bad king—Richard II, Richard III, Macbeth, Lear, Hamlet, Hamlet’s father, his uncle Claudius? Shakespeare makes it pretty clear that he doesn’t think much of either Richard, and however good a general Macbeth may have been, he obviously didn’t have what it takes to move up a notch. Many have viewed Shakespeare’s picture of King Henry V as the playwright’s description of something like an ideal king. Certainly Henry interested him. He wrote three plays about him. Two of them, Henry IV, Part 1, and Henry IV, Part 2, are named for his father, but Prince Hal is the central figure. And in the play actually named for him, Henry V, he moves from victory to improbable victory passing through a decidedly human array of emotions: doubts and humility, concern for the common people, rousing pep talks before battle. He’s a most attractive figure, yet he also has faults; Shakespeare’s is not a simplistic view. You have a rare opportunity now to make up your own mind about King Henry V and Shakespeare’s opinion of him: Shakespeare Festival St. Louis is performing all three of the Henry plays. Actually, they are doing only some parts of Henry IV 1 and 2, making one play out of the two. It’s mostly Part 1, which has a clear dramatic arc that follows the growth and development of young Prince Hal. Part 2 is considered a lesser work, but it ends with the death of Henry IV, the coronation of Henry V, and his rejection of the companions of his misspent youth—mostly personified in that great tub of guts, Falstaff. This makes a more resounding conclusion than Part 1 has. And it does keep in focus what Tim Ocel, the director of Henry IV, described as the story thread that guided their condensation of the two plays: “the story of Prince Hal’s positioning between his father, King Henry IV, and Hal’s slumming partner, Sir John Falstaff.” Thanks to Ocel’s direction and the performances of the cast, the Shakespeare Festival is bringing us an admirably clear presentation of the story. The multiple levels in Scott C. Neale’s set encourage dynamic physical action. But however active the players are, their lines are always crystal clear. Like their creator, these characters love words. Even Falstaff—or perhaps especially Falstaff—speaks in carefully shaped sentences, utilizing all the rhetorical devices Shakespeare learned in grammar school, and Tony DeBruno makes the most of them, even as he generates laughter. All the cast speak the speech as Prince Hamlet would have liked: Jim Butz’s Prince Hal—though I had hoped for more depth in Butz’s portrayal, Michael James Reed’s King Henry, Charles Pasternak’s explosive Hotspur, Gary Glasgow’s Lord Chief Justice, Jerry Vogel’s Sir Walter Blunt, Anderson Matthews’ Worcester, Joneal Joplin’s Northumberland, Alex Miller’s Douglas, Dakota Mackey-McGee’s Lady Percy, Kari Ely’s Mistress Quickly, Andrew Michael Neiman’s Ned Poins—so aware of his precarious position as Hal’s tavern friend. Henry V has now opened, but too recently for me to include it in this report. The two plays will alternate nights in Forest Park through June 15, with two double-feature Saturdays, June 7 and 14, when you can see both plays in one afternoon and evening. It’s a rare opportunity.

time. It’s written and directed by John Turturro, but Woody Allen dominates on screen. Set mostly in the Williamsburg neighborhood of New York, the film is visually and emotionally stimulating. Allen, as Murray Schwartz, is shuttering his bookstore. His employee and friend, Fioravante (Turturro), is facing a hand-to-mouth existence until Murray gets the idea of ‘pimping’ him after his rich dermatologist (Sharon Stone) mentions she’s interested in ‘a menage.’ Turns out, the brooding and gentle Fioravante is a huge success in the new venture, which brings fleeting joy to lonely rich women, but not to him. Meanwhile, we see the softer side of Murray when he attempts to lighten the life of Williamsburg widow Avigal (Vanessa Paradis). Depressed and removed from the bustling life around her, Avigal’s senses are reawakened when Murray arranges for a ‘therapy’ session with Fioravante, in the form of a massage. It’s all innocent enough, yet the connection these two make stirs feelings that bring each back into the fold of the living. Of course there’s plenty of silliness too: Why does Murray live with a black woman and her four kids? Why would Sharon Stone pay for sex? SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Absolutely. It’s funny and touching. —D.W.

Solving the intricate puzzle of the human face

COVER STORY

ORAL FACIAL by tony di martino THE HUMAN FACE is an intricate arrangement of bones, muscles,

at first, but can suffer from severe TMJ issues or life-threatening sleep apnea later.” A recent patient with a TMJ disorder endured 13 surgeries in 15 years before seeking help from Movahed. “An improperly placed prosthesis had caused massive destruction of the bony housing of her joint and skull, creating an opening in the skull base that led to her brain,” he recalls. “She’d been in severe pain for years.” He removed the faulty prosthesis and replaced it with a customdesigned device. “It was a complex procedure: I had to close the opening to the brain and drill screws into the bone without causing brain damage,” he says. The operation was a success. “Not only does she looks better, but proper function has been restored. Her headaches are gone, and she can eat without pain.” A 24-year-old woman suffered from a severe facial deformity that resulted in an overdeveloped upper jaw, a protruding lower jaw and overexposed gums. “She couldn’t bite properly or close her lips,” Movahed says. “Repairing her bite involved moving her upper jaw up and forward and setting her lower jaw backward—without restricting her airway. Now she looks great, she’s pain-free and she won’t have to deal with disrupted breathing down the line.” Whether they’re treating traumatic injuries or lifelong deformities, reconstructing a face damaged by cancer, or simply removing an infected wisdom tooth or inserting a dental implant, Movahed and his colleagues enjoy improving lives. “It’s amazing what we can do to help our patients look and feel better.” PHOTO: BILL BARRETT

nerve endings and tissue. If the delicate balance is askew by even a fraction of an inch, it can result in severe pain or disfigurement. The board-certified surgeons at Oral Facial Surgery Institute and Implant Center, based at Mercy St. Louis, are experts in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The dental specialty focuses on diseases, injuries and defects of the face, jaws, mouth and teeth. “It’s complicated work, requiring up to six additional years of advanced, hospital-based training after dental school,” says Dr. Reza Movahed, who also completed a yearlong fellowship in corrective jaw and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery at Baylor University in Dallas. Movahed, a clinical assistant professor at Saint Louis University, practices at OFSI’s Chesterfield offices. He and his colleagues often are called upon to correct facial deformities or imbalances. “To help patients look and function better long term, surgeons need to understand and respect the anatomy and underlying structures of the face and skull,” he says. The status of the airway and the TMJ must be DR. REZA MOVAHED meticulously evaluated prior to surgery, he explains. “Underlying issues with the joints, including degenerative diseases or growth disorders, can cause excessive resorption or joint growth, leading to unstable results after corrective jaw surgery,” he says. “And surgeons can inadvertently decrease the patient’s airway when moving a protruding jaw back. If these procedures aren’t done properly, patients look fine

New technology is popping up all over to make looking our best even easier. Here are a handful of new developments you might not have discovered yet. Once you do, there’s no telling how many of them you’ll want to try!

less underarm sweat>>

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can be extremely distressing. It stains clothes and is embarrassing in a work or social situation. We can’t always change our clothes multiple times a day. Some treatments, such as Botox, have proven useful, but are costly and may last only six months to a year. A better solution now available is laser (or Vaser) sweat ablation. Usually done under local anesthesia in the office, the procedure involves making a tiny incision in the armpit, through which a thin laser (light ablation) or VASER (ultrasound ablation) is passed around under the skin to destroy the sweat glands. Afterward, the area is temporarily bandaged. The incisions are too small to require stitches. Which method is used is up to physician preference, as they offer comparable results. Most people return to work the following day. There is some soreness for a few days but the risks are minimal. The process eliminates or significantly reduces sweating in the armpits in 80 percent of people. Although somewhat expensive, it provides a permanent solution with very little scarring. If the procedure works, it can improve the quality of life for the patient, reducing the need for heavy antiperspirants, sweat pads and expensive medications that may have unwanted side effects.

At least 10 percent of the population has one or more tattoos. Over time, 50 percent of them will wish they didn’t and will want them removed. That has become easier, if not cheaper. The American Academy of Dermatology has come out with a new way of removing tattoos in sometimes only one or two visits. Called the R20 METHOD, it uses the Q-switched laser but with a different protocol. The normal approach is to pass the laser over the tattoo and then have the person come back a month later for another treatment. What they have discovered is that they can do four treatments in one office visit, as long as they have 20 minutes between treatments to clear the white bubbling that typically forms on the treated area and blocks the laser. This approach allows the laser to reach and treat deeper color layers. Clinical studies have shown that one four-pass visit can clear the tattoo of black ink. Other colors will require an additional visit or two. Cost is another issue. The traditional laser removal costs about $400 a pass per session. When four passes are done in one session, the cost is, no surprise, $1,600. However, the tattoo is gone quicker—and it does not create any more problems than the more drawn-out method does.

solving cellulite>>

faster tattoo removal>>

Cellulite, that lumpy look that can plague the lower body despite diet and exercise, is really a structural problem involving small fat pockets separated by fibrous bands that pull down on the skin. Some of the factors that play a role in cellulite are aging, hormones, genetics and weight variations. Connective tissue bands under the skin become more fibrous, causing the larger fat cells they surround to bunch up. At the same time, our skin is becoming thinner, making this effect more noticeable. Developed by Cynosure, CELLULAZE uses laser-assisted technology to attack the three causes of cellulite. Under a local anesthetic, a thin laser fiber is inserted through narrow slits in the skin into the thighs, buttocks or hips, where the surgeon can liquefy fat cells, release the fibrous bands and stimulate collagen production that will enhance the thickness of the skin. The procedure takes up to two hours, and results continue to accrue over the next three to 12 months. Based on reviews, it seems to keep cellulite at bay for a year or more. You need only one treatment, and patients uniformly report satisfaction with results. It will set you back more than $5,000.

vintage vinyl nails>>

CND, the introducer of Shellac, has now come out with a unique vinyl nail polish called VINYLUX. While ordinary polishes start chipping and flaking over time, Vinylux dries quickly and becomes more chip-resistant over time. It lasts a week or more and it dries completely in 8 1/2 minutes, compared to the 15 to 20 minutes needed for traditional polish. Vinylux comes in 62 opaque, sheer and semi-sheer shades, and no base coat is needed.

chin symmetry>>

Cosmetic surgery focused on the chin and its prominence has made CHIN IMPLANTS a huge trend among both men and women, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. It is especially popular for people over 40, the age that both men and women start to see age-related changes around the lower face. The number of chin implants in 2011 increased 76 percent in men and 66 percent in women from the previous year. Some people speculate that the increase in online video chatting has made people more conscious of their chins. According to some plastic surgeons, people subconsciously associate a stronger chin with more authority, self-confidence and trustworthiness. Even more popular than lip augmentation, chin implants (by themselves or with liposuction to remove excess fat) are a fairly quick way people can add definition and a more assertive look to their profiles. Making it even more popular is the growing number and shapes of chin implants available. Earlier implants tended to be small and sometimes looked like a bulb on the end of the chin. Now they are made of soft, flexible body-friendly material that can extend along the jaw lines on both sides to give them a more natural look and tailor them to your face shape and size.

A national initiative, NEW BEGINNINGS: RADIATION MARK REMOVAL PROGRAM, uses lasers to remove the signs of radiation from cancer survivors, free of charge. Two doctors in our area, Dr. Brock Ridenour and Dr. George Hruza, are the local participants. Typically, cancer patients who receive external radiation treatments are ‘marked’ with small tattoos on the skin to ensure that the radiation therapist lines up the radiotherapy machine correctly each time. These are permanent unless removed with a laser at the conclusion of treatments. Dr. Ridenour’s free removal service is open to all cancer patients year-round, with an oncologist’s letter approving the removal of the marks. The free program is coordinated by the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery.

face-lift dentistry>>

FACE-LIFT DENTISTRY assesses the bite, height and placement of the teeth, and which corrections are needed. It is based on restoring the jaw position to where it should be before aging set in. By putting teeth and jaws in the right alignment, it not only takes years off age, but also improves health. Natural aging and tooth wear can lead to a shortened face, resulting in wrinkles and thin, compressed lips. As teeth wear and shorten, the distance between the tip of the nose and the bottom of the chin gets smaller. By restoring the length of short, worn-down teeth, even lips appear fuller. Changing the bite position can make the jawline look stronger and the cheeks appear more filled out. A variety of techniques is used, including crowns and veneers.

You may have thought you couldn’t wear contact lenses because you have too much astigmatism or, let’s face it, your arms are getting too short for your age-related presbyopia. As of April, ALCON LABORATORIES has expanded its Dailies AquaComfort Plus contacts line to include toric lenses for astigmatism and multifocal lenses for presbyopia. They correct low, medium and high levels of presbyopia and astigmatism up to -1.75 diopters, all in a daily disposable contact. For those of us who have OK vision but would really love Paul Newman’s baby blues, colored contacts are all the rage. Blue is the most popular and, depending on the shade of blue, different manufacturers excel: Deep Blue by Acuvue, Triple Color by Aloha Contacts (most intense), and Freshlook Colorblends blue (most classic). The hottest trending color right now is gray. Brown is popular with people wanting warm, cocoa-colored eyes. Honey lenses also are still popular, thanks to the Twilight craze. If you want to live on the edge, try more of an anime look: violet lenses. Splash’s Violet Venom and Triple Color Violet are standouts.

new peel >>

The VI PEEL, when used on a regular basis (two to four times a year), promises (and delivers, based on multiple reviews) improvement in skin tone, texture and clarity, and a reduction or elimination of age spots, freckles and hyper-pigmentation. Over time, it softens lines and wrinkles, clears acne skin conditions, reduces acne scars and stimulates collagen. The peel contains TCA, tretinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, vitamin C and a mineral blend. Expect some minor irritation for a couple of days and some intense peeling, but users were very happy with it. When combined with proper home care, it also has been effective for conditions like melasma and rosacea. It can be applied on the face, eye area, chest, hands, arms and back. The VI Peel may be repeated as often as every two weeks initially, if necessary, for damaged and problematic skin. The company recommends using it four times a year for maintenance and to prevent further skin damage. When applied on the hands, arms and chest, it seems to be very effective in removing sunspots and wrinkles associated with sun damage. Reviewers warn that those areas peel differently and may take longer to peel than the face.

juvederm for cheeks>>

While several fillers have been available for some time to fill in moderate to severe wrinkles around the nose and mouth, there hasn’t been much in the way of a fairly permanent solution for hollow cheeks or the mid-face in general. According to the company, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC injectible gel is the first and only filler FDA-approved to add volume instantly to the cheek and chin area, and is rated to lift and restore contour for up to two years in adults. Voluma is made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring, hydrating substance found in our skin, so it’s not perceived as a foreign body. We lose HA as we age, which causes our skin to lose structure and volume. While HA is used in other Juvederm products, the chains in Juvederm Voluma are shorter, making the material lower in weight and creating more lift. The particles are more uniform in size, and their oval shape make the substance easier to inject, lessening the chance of nodule formation. The increased cross-linking is what makes the product last longer.

filler without needles>>

The newest innovation in facial fillers is their delivery system. Developed in France, the MICROCANNULA is a very thin, blunt-tipped tube that is inserted under the skin and moved around to distribute the filler evenly. Depending on the size, it can be used for fat transfer and with most fillers (except Sculptra, which is too thick). No local anesthetic is required, and it has many advantages. Cosmetic surgeons who use it find virtually no bruising, considerably less pain and minimal downtime. Part of the reason bruising and pain are reduced is because the blunt microcannula bounces off blood vessels instead of piercing them like a pointed needle would. There are also fewer entry points because the microcannula can move under the skin to reach more areas without another needle stick. Some practitioners find they can fill upper lip lines, lips, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and the lower cheek on one side of the face, all through the same entrance site. However, they caution that there is a learning curve before a surgeon becomes expert at using cannulas, so check with your doctor about his/her training and experience with microcannulas for facial filler.

TAKE CONTROL major weight loss

by Rebecca Koenig | photo by Bill Barrett

ask the doctor: haircell therapy Is there anything I can do about hair loss that doesn’t involve surgery? Hair tHinning and loss is a common problem for many women, especially in the peri-menopausal and menopausal years. too often, patients who bring their concerns about hair loss to their doctors are dismissed or told to start minoxidil, because there haven’t been other good options available.

LOSING WEIGHT IS HARD WORK, and no one knows that better than Amy Bell. The 33-year-old mother of two and executive assistant at Mitch Murch Maintenance Management lost 267 pounds in five years. She didn’t use surgery, just embraced a lifestyle makover, completely changing her eating and exercise habits. She shares her story to show others they have the power to take control of their health. HAVE YOU ALWAYS STRUGGLED WITH WEIGHT? I’ve been a big girl since birth. I was a large teen and a large adult, but I was always very active and never had health issues. WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO MAKE THIS BIG EFFORT TO CHANGE? It was April 26, 2009—five years ago. I had gone to the doctor and the nurse put me on the scale and said I weighed 446 pounds. I argued with her, “That’s not right.” I’d always been in the 300s, but getting it up to 446 was just too much. I took a good look at myself and said, What am I doing with my life? WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS? I started by just being a little more active and watching what I ate. That phased into getting a gym membership. It was exciting and intimidating at the same time. But I’m not a shy person; you gotta go in and do it. I started strength training and that really helped. I’d seen a nutritionist at one point and did a lot of reading. I realized which foods work best for my body, when to eat and how much to eat. Two years ago, I gave up sugar and soda. It’s not dieting, it’s just healthy living. I have such an issue with the diet industry; I’ve done every fad diet possible, and that’s just not a proper way to live.

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY UNEXPECTED CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS? I’ve gone from a size 34 to a size 12, so just when I got into a size, a week later, it was too big! Much of the time I was pinning my clothes. The excessive skin on my arms and stomach is frustrating because, as hard as I worked, I still can’t wear sleeveless shirts. I need skin-removal surgery, but it’s costly. WHAT’S BEEN THE BEST REWARD? Teaching my children about a healthy lifestyle and being able to pass that knowledge along to them. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT? You need to move your body and take care of what you put into it. If you really want to make big changes, you have to have big dedication. It takes sacrifice, but it’s so worth it. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT EATING PLAN. I’m extremely strict. Whole foods are what you need, no middle-of-the-grocery store processed foods. I will never eat sugar: It wreaks havoc on the body and it’s highly addictive. Once you get away from it, you don’t want it anymore. If I’m going to have something off the regular meal plan, it will be on Saturday nights, and it will be French fries. At restaurants, there are healthy options. You can always ask for that hamburger without the bun.

times are changing, however, and new treatments offer hope for some patients who want to slow or reverse hair loss or thinning. platelet rich plasma, or prp, is a well-established treatment using a patient’s own stem cells and platelets to stimulate healing and growth. While its original uses were orthopedic, it has now made a splash on the cosmetic medicine scene for its ability to help the body repair and heal the skin. our office is on the forefront of this research, combining prp’s healing and growth qualities with acell, a biomatrix used to heal wounds. When these two are combined, the vital platelets, growth factors, and stem cells in the prp have a scaffolding to build on and can get established in the injected area, prompting hair follicles to grow. acell works as a beacon to summon further stem cells, and the whole system can trigger hair regrowth! this is a promising new treatment, with tremendous early results. all agree that the treatment, based as it is on the patient’s own biology, is not harmful in any way, which is also important. more research is being done now in top dermatology and hair loss practices, and we are very excited to be offering haircell (combined prp and acell) treatments in our des peres practice. if you are suffering from hair loss or thinning, the first step is to request a full workup from your primary care physician to rule out any underlying issues. then, minoxidil is available over the counter and is certainly worth a try. if that’s not giving the results you hope for, please know that new treatments are in development and one of the most exciting is available now. We welcome your questions about haircell in our offices, and you can reach us to discuss your options at 314-543-4015.

THE EXPECTATION OF FUN

together time on a summer trip can become mixed with the dreaded car rides and sibling spats. So what’s a parent to do? Here are seven suggestions to make this year’s excursion the trip of your dreams.

1.

The vacation starts when you lock the front door. My wife and kids taught me this lesson, as I used to be the kind of dad who wanted to rush to our destination. Instead, we began taking our time on the car rides, enjoying breaks to throw a football, have a picnic and decompress. And, of course, we went to the store beforehand to buy everyone’s favorite snacks. It’s amazing how effectively this avoided crabby parents and siblings. 2. Involve the kids. The more engaged your kids are in planning the vacation, the less whining and feet-dragging you will encounter along the way. 3. Don’t over-schedule. Allow lots of time to relax and go off-track, following your interests as they unfold. Having less on the itinerary means you will feel less rushed and have more opportunities to unwind, be in the moment and have fun. 4. Avoid becoming an ATM. Brainstorm ways your kids can earn money before the trip so they can use their own cash to buy mementos. Or give them some cash at the start of the trip and let them figure out how to budget their money. 5. Be 100 percent present. A dad once confessed that when he and his family watched old vacation videos, he had very little memory of the events even though he was behind the camera. He had been so preoccupied with his career that he was never really present. Don’t miss out! Commit not to do work on the trip and to keep electronic time to a minimum—and have everyone else agree to do the same. 6. Handle sibling rivalry. Vacation is not the ideal time to start working on your children’s interpersonal relationships. Begin today by: telling them your new role is teacher/ mediator and therefore you don’t care who started it, etc., you want them to figure out problems themselves; coaching them to ask for what they want from each other; instructing them to listen to the other side and create win-win agreements that work for both parties. If they fight in the car, pull over, have them get out, and don’t let them back in until they have peacefully figured out a solution. Do more with less. Oftentimes it’s the unscripted, spontaneous moments that are the most memorable. On our first night of a Colorado camping trip, I invited everyone to sit by the mountain stream and stargaze with me. The immediate reaction was that it sounded lame. I did it anyway, and slowly the others meandered down to the riverbank, and we experienced one of the most beautiful skies ever—together. T&S HOME 13456 THORNHILL DRIVE ] by stephanie zeilenga listing price | $2,495,000 listing agent | stephanie oliver of dielmann sotheby’s international realty

PHOTOS BY WILLIAM C. HUTTON JR.

TWENTY YEARS AGO, Nachomama’s Tex Mex owners Nancy and John St. Eve wanted more room for their growing family. When they found a spacious Town & Country lot offering plenty of privacy, they jumped at the chance to build their dream home at 13456 Thornhill Drive. “We built the whole house,” Nancy St. Eve says. “The property had a home on it already, but we took that down to the studs.” With more than 8,000 square feet on a 1.59-acre lot, the three-story colonial provided plenty of space for the family of six. Perched atop a lush green lawn, the gabled white home with black shutters looks like it’s always been there. “When we did all the construction, we tried to make it look like it was an original equestrian home in Town & Country,” St. Eve says. “Anyone who sees our house thinks it was built by the original landowners.” The home’s traditional look adds to its welcoming feel without making it seem oversized, she adds. “People say it’s big, but not ostentatious. It’s really homey and fabulous.” The surrounding grounds echo the classic look of the home. “The grounds are spacious and the landscaping is traditional, with a lot of boxwoods and magnolias,” St. Eve says. “It’s just under 2

acres, which for St. Louis in Town & Country is sprawling.” The grounds also feature a pool, surrounded by patio and pool house with a full kitchen and half-bath. The St. Eve children are all grown up now and have added five grandchildren to the family. The home’s ample size makes visits to see Mom and Dad anything but a headache. “All my kids live out of town, and on the third floor we’ve made a beautiful dormitory for the grandchildren,” St. Eve says. And visits home are frequent, especially around the holidays. “Every year, everyone knows Thanksgiving is here and they fly in from all over,” St. Eve says. “It’s a beautiful home for entertaining.” One particularly memorable event was their daughter’s wedding reception last year. “We had around 300 people for dinner,” St. Eve says. “Martha Stewart flew her team out to photograph the wedding, and we had lots of different bands and even flew in a country musician from Fort Worth.” Now that their children have moved on with families of their own, it’s time for the couple to downsize, but they will remain in the St. Louis area, St. Eve says. “I’m anxious to get smaller,” she says.

HOMEWORK] DEAR HOMEWORK,

I have designed the interior of my house into a cottage-style home. Please help me complete the exterior in the same style without painting the brick. ———DREAMING OF THE COUNTRY

DEAR DREAMING OF THE COUNTRY,

Your desire to bring a ‘country feel’ to your home raises the question, “What does ‘country’ mean?” While the usual images of charming farm houses and barns or wheat fields and rolling hills come to mind, they aren’t very helpful in this case. Instead, I am going to interpret the term as also meaning casual, asymmetrical and welcoming. To begin with, your simple ranch home is, at least, style-neutral, framed with a large AFTER shade tree and benefiting from an uphill position. You also have used shutters and flower boxes to soften the feel of the home. You will note, however, that I have altered both these features in minor ways to give them a more authentic feel. In addition, I have re-imagined the front porch with new wood columns and an arched top, which gives it considerably more character. As a final change, simple picket-fence-like handrails replace more formal iron railings. The house now looks as country as it can without major structural changes. The changes to the landscape also help bring a welcoming feel to the property. An undulating, continuous bed of shrubs, flowers and grasses add an element of joy to the property while drawing the eye to the full width of the composition. An informal clump of evergreens at the right blocks the view of a neighboring garage door. In the end, these changes impart a more welcoming feel that is the essence of a country mindset. Hope that helps, ———HOMEWORK HOMEWORK IS PENNED BY PAUL DOERNER, PRESIDENT, THE LAWRENCE GROUP. IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR HOME CRITIQUED, CONTACT US AT HOMEWORK@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM

[REAL TALK ] DIANE DENNY] prudential select properties by tony di martino

| MAY 28, 2014

LIFE-CHANGING MOMENT I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I always liked photography and math, but a friend’s mom owned Renaissance Realty in Benton Park and said, “You should get your real estate license. You can sell anything.” She was right. That was in 1986, and I’ve been in the business ever since. FIRST SALE It was in Maplewood, but I can’t remember for how much. My broker gave it to me, but I was so excited to have a listing. BIGGEST SALE EVER A $1.7 million home in Town & Country. THINK AGAIN People think real estate is an easy, fun way to make a living. If you just want to dabble, fine. But if you actually want to pay your bills and send your kids to school, you have to work all the time. We don’t get to keep the entire commission, just a piece. WHEN THE BUBBLE BURST We actually got busier when the market crashed. During tough times, people want a top agent. EXPERT ADVICE When an owner asked why his house wasn’t selling, I grabbed my iPad and showed him a few homes that had flown off the market. “OK, I get it,” he said. He made a few small kitchen improvements: a tile backsplash and a new stove hood. The house sold right away. Little fixes can make a big difference. BUMPS IN THE ROAD You just have to keep going. Don’t let the deal die. If people are quibbling over repairs, help them get bids. Take the emotion out of the equation. These are business decisions. GIVING CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUE I’m proud to be one of Prudential’s top salespeople worldwide, but I couldn’t do it without my team, including my husband and Denny Team co-owner Bridget Forbes. WHY SHE’S NO. 1 I love a challenge. The tougher the deal, the more I love it. That’s when the fun starts. Bring it on! I can do it.

No one is surprised Diane Denny has been the No. 1 agent companywide since Prudential Select Properties started in 2001. She knows houses—and she knows St. Louis. “I’ve owned 48 houses here over the years, and lived in 15 of them,” says Denny, who grew up in Kirkwood and Manchester. “Before I joined an agency, I rehabbed and sold houses on my own. I’ve always loved this business.” Last year was the best ever for the Denny Team, with more than $44 million in sales. She lives in Des Peres with husband (and business partner) Terry Chartrand. Their seven kids are now grown and out of the house.

SALT CHLORINATION

Salt chlorination systems are replacing traditional chlorine filters in many pools. They are more environment-friendly and create soft, odorless water that is not damaging to the skin, hair and eyes. They’re also more cost-effective and easier to maintain. Hayward’s AquaRite Salt Chlorinator is one of the top systems available and comes in three sizes for the most efficient chlorination.

RETURN OF GEOMETRICS

In recent years, free-form pools have been more common, but geometric shapes are coming back. “Geometric pools conform to the trends of modern architecture,” says Ray Holt, president of Baker Pool Construction. “Designers have been pushing the envelope in more modern settings with a good blend of the latest finishes.” LUXURIOUS FURNISHINGS

Opt for stylish and comfortable upholstered pool deck furnishings for a more finished look. “This over-scaled crescent sectional from Tommy Bahama by Lexington Home is roomy and inviting. The colorful textures and bold-print scatter pillows perfectly finish any outdoor oasis,” says Peggy Pond, Outdoor furniture manager for Amini’s Home, Rugs & Game Room.

TAN SHELF

A flat, raised ‘tan shelf’ is a popular addition to new pools. “They are a great spot for young children or even for adults who don’t want to get entirely in the water,” says John Jacobsen, president of Liquid Assets Pools. “The tan shelf in this pool complements the natural surroundings with Missouri-indigenous fieldstone boulders.”

GLASS TILE

Glass tile in pools is growing in popularity over traditional ceramic. It’s harder to crack and available in a full range of luxurious colors and finishes. According to designer Amy Denny of Alpentile, “The human eye is captivated by the reflective qualities of iridescent mosaics in water. Clients love the calming effect it has.” PHOTO: AMY DENNY; TILE INSTALLATION: LUKE DENNY, ALPENTILE.COM
