[ letter from the editor ] While there is nothing better than coming home from a long trip and finding one (or more) of your children there, it’s not without its surprises. On the plus side, there’s usually plenty of food in the fridge, since all that Trader Joe’s stuff you have in there has been shunned in favor of more premium foods, courtesy of Mom’s credit card. I’m still working on the TJ goat cheese ($2.99), long after they polished off two packages of artisanal, small-batch Baetje Miette. (Judging from the price, raising goats on alfalfa and organic herbal tea should be outlawed.) On the downside, I could have sworn I had six porcelain espresso cups and saucers when I hand-carried them back from Tuscany years ago. Oh well, the missing pieces will probably turn up when I put away the stuff my kids left here for storage. And I’m pretty pleased to get the car back in one piece after they’ve driven it for a week. The gas tank wasn’t even on empty—returning it with a quarter of a tank shows some maturity, I think. With families as far-flung as ours, I just count myself lucky to see them every now and then. I’m not going to sweat the small stuff—a week’s worth of food wrappers and dirty Starbucks cups won’t ruin the car (or the trash bin they eventually dumped it into without pre-bagging it). I’m sticking with the mantra, It’s all just stuff. The important thing is that they still want to come home.

zoofari]

The penguins won’t be the only ones wearing tuxedos on June 21. On that summer night, zebra stripes and leopard spots will be seen on creatures with four legs and two, and everyone will be able to talk to the animals. Yes, it’s time for one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year—Zoofari, Saint Louis Zoo’s biennial fundraiser. Our Zoo, founded in 1910, is recognized worldwide as a leader in sustaining animals and their habitats through research, proper care, conservation efforts and education programs. Proceeds from Zoofari help the Zoo save endangered species here and around the world. This year’s featured animal is the Grevy’s zebra, the largest and most intricately striped of the three zebra species. “In 1977, there were more than 15,000 of these amazing animals in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia,” says Steve Schankman, president of Contemporary Productions, who co-chairs Zoofari 2013 with Barbara Archer, president and founder of Archer Wealth Management. “Today, there are fewer than 2,500 left in the wild.” Illegal poaching for food and medicinal purposes, coupled with a shrinking habitat and competition over scarce resources, have driven them to the brink of extinction, he adds. Scientists are working with African communities to reverse the sharp decline. The Zoo was a leader in establishing the Grevy’s Zebra Trust, a coalition of 27 zoos dedicated to saving the species. The Zoo’s WildCare Institute Center for Conservation in the Horn of Africa also plays a key role. The center works to establish a balance between community needs and the imperiled existence of several rare species, including the Grevy’s zebra. Last year, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums recognized the Zoo and its partners with two top awards, including the International Conservation Award. But these and other efforts cost money—and raising money is what Zoofari is all about. Contributing to the fun will be musical headliners Huey Lewis and the News, whose many hits include The Power of Love. While dancing under the stars, partygoers can graze on appetizers, main dishes, desserts and drinks from more than 60 top restaurants and caterers. As always, the event features spectacular auction and raffle items, including luxury vacations, rare Zoo memorabilia, corporate suites at major sporting events, and a dazzling pendant from Albarre Jewelry, valued at $5,000. Honorary chairs are Danny Ludeman, CEO of Wells Fargo Advisors, and his wife, Susan. Presenting sponsor is Wells Fargo Advisors. Other underwriters and sponsors include Fifth Third Bank, Emerson, Anheuser-Busch, World Wide Technology, Edward Jones, Mid-America Chevy Dealers, Monsanto, Schnuck Markets, Jack C. Taylor, U.S. Bank and Albarre Jewelry. “Guests can enjoy a fun-filled evening, knowing they’re helping the Zoo care for animals and their habitats,” says co-chair Barbara Archer. “The Grevy’s zebra needs our help, and it’s only one of many magnificent creatures the Zoo works hard to protect. We hope you’ll join us June 21 to dine, dance and show your stripes in support of an endangered species.”

cover story

ORAL FACIAL ] SURGERY INSTITUTE & IMPLANT CENTER

by tony di martino Sometimes it’s as simple as removing a painful wisdom tooth or inserting a dental implant to replace a lost or damaged tooth. Other times, it’s as complex as a major facial reconstruction to repair damage caused by injury, disease, or congenital deformity. Whatever the task, Dr. Michael Noble and his colleagues at Oral Facial Surgery Institute & Implant Center are dedicated to helping patients put their best face forward. “We represent the leading edge of medical and dental care in the region,” says institute director Noble. On a typical day, he and his team might completely rebuild a face that’s been crushed in a car wreck, skillfully reconstructing the eye sockets, cheekbones and lower jaw. From there, they might remove an infected wisdom tooth, then treat a patient suffering from sleep apnea with either a take-home therapeutic device or a surgical procedure that creates an open airway. Or they might heal a severe facial disfigurement by surgically realigning the patient’s jawbones. “Thanks to increasing expertise and rapid advances in dental medicine, it’s amazing what we can do,” Noble says. OFSI’s eight surgeons are nationally recognized experts in the art and science of oral and maxillofacial surgery, a dental specialty that focuses on diseases, deformities, injuries and defects of the head, neck, face and jaw. “The specialty requires up to six additional years of advanced, hospital-based surgical, medical and anesthesia training after completion of dental school,” Noble explains. Established in 1990, the institute, based at Mercy Medical Center, practices state-of-the-art procedures with the latest technology. “We get referrals from all over the country,” Noble says. “Our board-certified surgeons excel at the full range of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including microsurgical nerve repair and diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant pathology.” Many procedures can be done in-office with local or intravenous anesthesia in any of OFSI’s four locations, Noble adds. “But if need be, we’re affiliated with several hospitals and have access to their facilities and specialists. We also manage and treat all patients who come through Mercy’s Level I Trauma Center with traumatic facial injuries.” What really sets OFSI apart, Noble says, is the top-level service offered by everyone on staff. “We’re an independent practice, not a corporate-owned ‘surgical supercenter.’ Our primary focus is patient safety, care and comfort.” The work is challenging, but rewarding: “We help change patients’ lives by easing their pain, treating their traumatic injuries or lifelong deformities, or just helping them look and feel better. That’s why my colleagues and I chose this specialty: to have a profound impact on the people we serve.” The Oral Facial Surgery Institute and Implant Center, based at Mercy Medical Center, also has locations in Kirkwood, Chesterfield and Eureka. Pictured on the cover: Drs. Michael Barbick, Patrick Morris, Michael Noble and Mark Beehner. In back: Drs. Michael Suden, Reza Movahed, Mykle Jacobs and John Haden. talk [towns] by bill beggs jr.

BRIDGETON

Maybe if we bury it, it will just go away. That seems to have been the cavalier attitude of Mallinckrodt personnel who illegally dumped leftovers from the company’s uranium-ore processing operations in an unlined Bridgeton landfill in the early 1970s. We don’t normally cover areas this far north, but buried uranium waste and garbage smoldering underground are likely to have an effect beyond their immediate vicinity. The dump has created enough putrid fumes that the owner encouraged nearby residents with respiratory problems to limit their time outdoors. If anyone so much as whispers ‘nuke,’ count on national media to hear it: Rolling Stone published a feature in its May 10 issue that is nothing if not scary. All this said, the EPA has had its hands full dealing with the Superfund site, and is considering alternatives to allowing the waste to remain. The EPA may exhume it and apply a more fail-safe containment method, meanwhile generating thousands more pages of official documents. Is it all that big a deal? Well, high-school physics tells us the stuff can remain hazardous for hundreds of thousands of years! People who drink too much alcohol often do things they later regret. We’d imagine the Manchester woman who smashed a cocktail glass into a female bartender’s face is in a different frame of mind now than a few weeks ago. It doesn’t take much to imagine the chain of events: Woman enters Smitty’s Food and Drink, 14874 Clayton Road in Chesterfield, and commences to imbibe. She becomes loud and obnoxious. Bartender asks her to leave. Patron refuses, perhap using some colorful language. When imagination fails, stick to the police report: Cops say the bartender tried to escort the unruly patron outside. First

of the

the customer threw her drink in the bartender’s face, then broke her nose with the glass, also causing a gash that required a plastic surgeon’s care. That’s drastic. Regular folks go to a bar for a drink and a few laughs. But when it’s a few drinks too many, not a damn thing is funny. I hope our saying this about a massive corporate entity doesn’t attract a phalanx of statute-thumping attorneys, but Walmart is kind of like the 800-pound gorilla. Big-box stores tend to suck business away from mom-and-pop shops, and even from local supermarket chains. Most cities love Walmart because it’s a cash cow that produces sales tax out the wazoo. Well, Ellisville has given the corporation push-back regarding a TIF (tax-increment financing, a cost-cutting measure at the municipality’s expense). Big companies consider TIFs a perk: ‘Fine; if you don’t take our supercenter, somebody else will.’ A previous council approved the measure; some members of the present council aren’t so sure. Walmart’s attorney insists the council must act in an ‘administrative,’ not ‘legislative,’ fashion. Now, the council is mulling over hiring special counsel to review options. This is bound to get interesting, so stay tuned. Curiously, while some drinking and dining establishments have done just fine in Kirkwood’s Station Plaza, there’s been a revolving door in the southernmost space. Crushed Red, however, has high hopes that the fourth time’s the charm. Open since May 20, the self-proclaimed Urban Bake and Chop Shop at 140 S. Kirkwood Road is the eatery’s second location, featuring salads chopped to order, unique pizza and appetizers (known as ‘shareables’). Crushed Red’s first locale is in Clayton—and highly popular. It’s not

like the Kirkwood Station Plaza space is haunted or anything, but Pazzo’s Pizza closed in January after only about a year. Attention, shopaholics! Retail news is abuzz in Maplewood. First, if your recollection of Deer Creek Center is only as the nearly vacant, rundown strip center once anchored by Venture (remember those storefronts of black-and-white diagonal stripes?), you’ll rub your eyes to make sure the bright, sparkling plaza is the same place. A new Marshall’s was slated to open by the time you read this, joining the likes of Ross Dress for Less, Buy Buy Baby, JoAnn Fabrics and Shoe Carnival. In downtown Maplewood, a new art gallery and caffeinated-beverage purveyor are up and running. Stop by Maplewood Galleries, 7415 Manchester Road, to see the pieces displayed by James and Louise Harre. Now, there’s no shortage of coffee shops here, but if you love tea, Kateri Meyer, who once prepared her blends exclusively for farmers markets and select retailers, has put down roots with Traveling Tea, 2707 Sutton Blvd. Many of us who don’t sit behind the nameplates at city council meetings probably can’t imagine the challenges presented in keeping a municipality’s finances healthy. That said, some of the things that have happened and are continuing in Rock Hill are real head-scratchers. An historic, antebellum church demolished and a home relocated by a gas station? Been there, done that. But now, an industrial storage facility will come in at the expense of a well-loved store that deals in used and rare books: not just any home, but a 150-year-old, three-story Victorian home set back from Manchester Road. Served an eviction notice May 1, The Book House has until July 31 to vacate. Other

independent bookstores have taken up the cause … while they can’t fight city hall, they are trying to raise funds to help the owner Michelle Barron with the expense of starting over in a new location. If you’re on the same page as the All On The Same Page bookstore in Creve Coeur, check out the petition on change.com. Whatever other name the new Mississippi River bridge eventually comes to be known by, for the time being let’s use this as a place-holder: spectacular. The $660-plus million project is clicking right along, with the two sections of bridge deck and roadway set to join soon: sometime in June. For now, engineers have only to worry about traffic tie-ups elsewhere to get to work … of course, much of the heavy lifting is done while we sleep. The roadway and interchanges are slated to open for motorists early next year. Meanwhile, what’s in a name? For one thing, agreement between Illinois and Missouri over a permanent moniker. If legislators in the Show-Me State have their way, it would be the

st. louis city

[ TT Trivia ] What two businesses preceded Pazzo’s Pizza in the Station Plaza space where Crushed Red has opened in Kirkwood?

The first correct email answer we receive at towntalk@townandstyle.com will win an exclusive Town & Style tote bag! Last issue’s answer | There’s a metal bike rack / sculpture fashioned after a steaming cup of caffeinated (or decaffeinated) beverage outside the U. City java joint, named Meshuggah, at 6269 Delmar Blvd.

TOWN TALK

Stan Musial (Memorial?) Bridge, or, as a wag has said, the ‘Stan the Man Span.’ To many, the late No. 6 was the best all-round baseball player ever, a true gentleman on and off the field. Well … not so fast. It appears that Musial has made it only halfway across the river. A bill that may have been signed by Gov. Jay Nixon by the time you

read this would put the name into effect Aug. 28, for this side. Both U.S. senators in Missouri—as well as in Illinois— have given the name a nod. The holdup is in Springfield, Ill. Legislators in our neighboring state seem intent on naming the awe-inspiring structure the Veterans Memorial Bridge. In our not-so-perfect world, borders

WEBSTER GROVES

are real sticking points. While we wouldn’t go so far as comparing this to the zone separating North and South Korea, perhaps it is also a question of the north—Chicago, to be specific. This appears to be the silliest demonstration of politics, can’t we all just get along, people? It took some real diplomacy to agree on both sides of the river for the bridge not to charge a toll—like in Chicago—so let’s not have to consider the specter of a bridge half Cardinals red, the other Cubs blue! We just can’t keep a secret: The Secret Gardens of Webster Groves garden tour is from noon to 4 p.m., June 2. The self-paced tour will treat visitors to 10 ‘gardens of distinction,’ taking in styles from an English cottage garden focusing on color and containers to a shaded menagerie with an award-winning water garden. There’s a sun garden with plants not normally found in St. Louis, a bonsai garden, a garden with more than 100 species of mostly native trees and plants. Most gardens feature accoutrements that include

structures easy on the eye and created to soothe, such as European statuary, pergolas, ponds, waterfalls, fountains—even a tower to house chimney swifts. Considering sustainability for your landscape? Two gardens have been rated by the St. Louis Audubon Society Community Partnership’s Bring Conservation Home program, one being certified platinum, the highest level of conservation. The second uses rainscaping, rain barrels and plantings to help with water conservation. Here, Scott Woodbury from Shaw Nature Reserve will discuss rain management and Missouri plants. Tour-goers will be among the first to enjoy a natural playground at Walter Ambrose Family Center: landscape and natural elements, ‘movement corridors’ and ‘sun paths’ create learning opportunities in a sustainable environment. Some gardens will feature music, refreshments or garden items for sale. Advance tickets are available for $15 at wghsparentsclub.org or several locations in town; they’re $20 on Sunday. What if it rains? The tour will go on, and the gardens will secretly love it.

[Goings-On Central Style by bill beggs jr. Central St. Louis usually refers to suburbs like Clayton, U. City and Ladue. We already know what’s going on in Clayton, a little something called a centennial! So what’s the word on our other two ‘central’ suburbs? For that we turned to a Ladue’s new mayor and a U. City entrepreneur. << Mayor Hits the Ground Running A volunteer from the get-go, Nancy Spewak exudes the kind of energy you need in a mayor’s chair. She served eight years on Ladue’s city council and worked on behalf of children’s charities until her April election. Her office in early May seemed Spartan for someone whose ‘real’ job is designing interiors and staging homes for resale. She’s been too busy working with the council and residents on city business. A major focus: Two firehouses to replace the 1960s facilities in service. Construction starts next year, with both ready for service by 2017. Sales tax and the city’s capital improvement fund will provide money. “We must be cognizant of taxpayer dollars,” she says. “We’ll adhere to ‘pay as you go’.” What more? Well...Busch’s Grove will become a nexus for upscale retailers and boutiques; Desco is redeveloping Colonial Marketplace, home to the former Ladue Galleries; a website revamp will add business links to detail city services and ordinances; resurfacing Litzsinger Road will take place; after a four-year hiatus; and the beloved Dogwood Festival and Parade returns next spring. << Loop Trolley to Knit U. City with Greater Metro Among Joe Edwards’ many visions for the area is streetcars. Edwards envisions the line from the Delmar Loop to the History Museum—a project slated to begin this year—“as a prototype to connect two neighborhoods and MetroLink.” Not to mention, it could become an example of how other metro areas could revive trolley service. While he predicts streetcars will one day course throughout Forest Park, the project presents a golden opportunity to establish a Loop media hub. Edwards says installing online infrastructure while also laying track could save 85 percent on the hub. With The Pageant, a mid-sized entertainment space opened in 2000, the Loop continued its eastward march into St. Louis. And an ambitious Washington University project to house upperclassmen, plus provide more (uniquely quirky) street-level retail, is underway. Edwards says the development, which exemplifies the “great symbiotic relationship between Wash. U. and the Loop,” will be complete by August 2014. What’s next, the galaxy? For the entrepreneurial Edwards and his beloved U. City, there’s always more.

[ Burt Bacharach’s new memoir, Anyone Who Had a Heart: My Life and Music, does not speak kindly of St. Louis native and legendary Broadway producer David Merrick (42nd Street, Gypsy). Apparently, Merrick was rude and obnoxious during the production of Promises, Promises. However, Merrick’s insistence on another hit for the show resulted in Bacharach writing I’ll Never Fall in Love Again. Bacharach recently told me he remembers playing the Muny in 1970 and spraying bug repellant on his hands. As a result, his fingers kept getting stuck on the keys throughout out the show. ] [ Jimmy Connors, the tennis great from East St. Louis and Belleville, Ill., has written his autobiography, The Outsider. In it, he recalls dining as a kid with his family in an East St. Louis restaurant when Buster Wortman’s gang busted in and started shooting up the place. The Connors party ran safely into the kitchen. (Wortman reigned over southeastern Illinois gambling until 1968.) ]

[ Maya Angelou is out with Mom & Me & Mom which recounts her brutal life in St. Louis. The author, poet and actress lived on Hickory and Caroline streets in the 1930s. Angelou was raped here and then testified against her attacker. When he was suddenly killed, she felt responsible and decided not to talk at all for four years. ]

For that reason, 18 is a spiritual number and nobody knows that better than Crossroads College Prep seventh-grader Charlie O’Gorman of the Central West End. Any guidance on getting an edge on the competition? ——Edgy in Edwardsville A: It is understandable that you want to outshine your competition, but be careful how you go about it—you could end up causing yourself a lot more pain than gain! Remember, your competitors also are colleagues, so you don’t want to appear to upstage them. Doing so may generate resentment toward you and undermine the positive image you want to project of yourself to your new boss. That said, start doing your homework. Learn as much as you can about your new boss’ background and education, significant awards and achievements, as well as any articles he’s published. If he is high-profile, there should be a great deal of information about him on the Internet. More important, you should be prepared to provide your new department leader with a clear, concise summary of what you’re currently working on and anticipate any questions he may have. And, since he is from out of town, you may wish to offer—after you have been properly introduced (and when the moment is right)—to point out the nearest grocery store or a good local restaurant, to help him get acclimated to his new surroundings. All in all, if you project a helpful, can-do spirit, along with accurate, actionable information that your new boss can use to hit the ground running, you will have positioned yourself well vis-à-vis ‘the competition’ without jeopardizing your working relationship with your colleagues.

Q: I’m a receptionist, and a co-worker I hardly know called me during office hours and whispered, I want you. I was shocked and told him I wasn’t interested, then hung up on him. Now, he frequently walks past my desk and just stares at me as he goes by. I’m feeling very uncomfortable. What should I do? ——Need your Help in Afton A: Your co-worker’s behavior is not only inappropriate, it sounds creepy, especially since he is someone you hardly know. You absolutely have a right to work in an office environment free from such harassment and stalking. This is a delicate situation but I believe it should be addressed and resolved as soon as possible. First, apprise your supervisor and ask what the company policy is for handling such a matter. If you fear for your personal safety, I certainly would not hesitate to seek the advice of law enforcement. Hopefully, you won’t have to resort to drastic measures, but be prepared—just in case. Julie & Justin Aylward ~ 5 | 5 | 2012 by rebecca koenig | photos by josephine havlak

e hear from many happy newlyweds at T&S, but for this wedding special section, we talked to a couple that has already celebrated an anniversary. One year after taking their vows, native St. Louisans Justin and Julie Aylward give marriage a positive report. “We love married life,” Julie says. “It was a smooth transition. I can’t believe we’ve been married a year. It flew by.” The couple lives in Boston, where Justin, an MICDS alum, is a vice president at Blackstone Group financial services firm and Julie, a Burroughs graduate, runs her own design company, Julie Elizabeth Jewelry. A mutual friend had introduced the pair, who dated long-distance while attending different graduate schools. Justin surprised Julie by proposing while they were on vacation at a resort in Laguna, Calif. “We

went for a walk and he proposed on the cliffs overlooking the ocean,” Julie says, “all surrounded by flowers. It was perfect.” The wedding took place at Westwood Country Club, where Julie’s family are members. “It was an incredibly beautiful day, really hot, but it was so exciting,” Julie says. The Sultans of Swing, a band she and Justin had seen at a wedding in New York City, flew down to perform at the reception. The Aylwards spent their honeymoon at Parrot Cay in Turks and Caicos. One of the only differences Julie has noticed about being married is having two families to visit over holidays. “Marriage has been really fun,” she says. “We get to spend a lot of time together, since we don’t know a lot of people [in Boston] yet.” To those about to make the marriage plunge, she advises, “Really enjoy the year you’re engaged. It goes fast.”

It’s considered a breach of etiquette to steal the spotlight from the bride on her wedding day. But lately, mothers of the bride and groom just can’t help themselves. “Most moms today look anything but matronly,” says Nancy Lehtman of Distinctions. “In fact, they’re downright glamorous. So many women in their 40s, 50s and beyond are working out, doing yoga and Pilates, and eating healthfully. They’re not about to hide their figures beneath some dowdy, flouncy frock. They’re looking for an elegant, tasteful dress that still manages to show off their shape.” She should know. Distinctions, the upscale boutique Lehtman owns with her husband, Bruce, has long been the go-to spot for bridal moms. “By popular demand, designers are making great strides in the mother-of-thebride and groom category,” she says. The request she gets most often from moms is, I don’t want to look like a typical mother of the bride. “They’re in luck, because the latest looks are classic, but far from boring.” Beading and other forms of embellishment are still popular, Lehtman reports, “but we’re seeing just as many simple, sleek gowns with a Grecian look.” Flowing fabrics, such as silk and chiffon, are in demand. One of her favorite designers, Marisa Baratelli, offers a stunning line of silk dresses in dozens of colors, with a hint of iridescence. “They’re not right for everyone,” she says. “Some women prefer a bridal moms want to look glamorous. gown from distinctions little more ornamentation.” Lehtman understands that not every woman is a size zero. “But even if you wear a size 16 and up, you still want to look and feel beautiful,” she says. “We carry stunning, high-style looks for women of all sizes, and we work with you one-on-one to find the most flattering style for your figure. If we don’t have it in stock, we’ll special-order it for you.” The biggest mistake most moms make is coming in with a preconceived notion of what works for them, Lehtman says. “They’ll say, ‘I can’t wear a bolero; I need a longer jacket,” but then we’ll get them to try a bolero, and they look fantastic—and 10 pounds thinner!” The right dress is only the beginning. “Accessories can make or break an outfit,” Lehtman says. “The wrong earrings can ruin even the most gorgeous gown.” So Distinctions also carries a dazzling selection of jewelry, bags and other finishing touches. “We enjoy helping our customers create a head-to-toe look.” Outstanding customer service is what sets Distinctions apart from other stores, she adds. “For more than 25 years, we’ve helped women look their very best, no matter what age or size they are. That’s why our customers keep coming back, and that’s why they keep telling their friends about us.”

WHAT TO WEAR…

WHERE]

by ellen nisenson soule

[MOTHER OF THE BRIDE OR GROOM Wedding season is upon us. We all know the bride

is the key focus, but what about the mothers? They want to look good too—and to be dressed ‘appropriately,’ whatever that means! Luckily, in this day and age, there are ways for MOB and MOG to be stylish and current, rather than slightly ‘frumpy,’ the way moms were expected to look once upon a time. They can find silhouettes that are figure-flattering and sophisticated, including glamorous gowns and smart skirt suits appropriate for every type of wedding.

>> Here are some tips to keep in mind as you shop for a dress: Color: In my opinion, that decision is dictated by the colors

chosen by the bride. Look for colors that complement the main palette. The color should flatter you as well—and make sure it’s different from the ‘other mother.’ Sleeves: These are highly recommended, especially for the ceremony. The reception is another story. But if you plan to go sleeveless, how much skin do you want to show? Off-the-shoulder is fine if you have a striking sleeve, such as one in delicate lace or sheer chiffon. These are good options for covering up trouble spots while still adding a bit of sexy. If you do go sleeveless, or wear a one-shoulder gown, consider a shawl, cape, capelet or bolero jacket during the ceremony. Who knows … you may even need it if the air is cold. Layered or tiered skirts: These can be a very flattering way to add interest to your gown. As far as fabrics go, chiffon is soft and drapes beautifully. Plus, it camouflages lumps and bumps. And there are lots of colors to choose from with this material.

perfect dress to complement the bridal party.

1. Do not upstage the bride. Even if you have a better figure and are more stylish than your daughter or future daughter-in-law, do not steal the spotlight.

2. Wear an appropriate outfit for your age. A wedding is no place to cause a distraction among the guests Kay Unger (like with a plunging neckline or a too-tight skirt or bodice). 3. Photos are forever. These will be among the family archives, probably shown to future generations of grandkids. How do you want to be remembered?

Q: How much jewelry should I wear? When do I need to cut back? A: Don’t over-accessorize. Chose a piece that means something special for the occasion – a family heirloom such as a brooch, earrings, necklace, ring or bracelet. Strive for balance in the amount of jewelry you wear. The understated look is always safer.

Q: What might be considered ‘inappropriate’ for the mother of the bride or groom to wear? A: Certainly the hemline should not be too short. And too much beading detail, or an abundance of ruffles, can be distracting. Remember to minimize distractions: less is more. And when in doubt …don’t.

A slew of bridesmaids, mothers and in-laws enter the Mary Cates Salon in Ellisville armed with coffee and pictures of their chosen updos. The salon soon buzzes as stylists begin to sculpt the women’s hair— except the bride’s. She bounces from one side of the salon to the other, checking on her party. She finally takes a seat when makeup artist Jordan Haller corners her at the cosmetic counter. Jordan advises the bride to stick with a classic face that highlights her best features. “Trends won’t be there 30 years down the road,” she explains as she smooths primer on Sara’s face. “What looks good now is not going to look good later in photos.” Sara and some of the other women opt for airbrushed makeup, which creates a flawless, lightweight look—and conveniently hides some tan lines. Jordan carefully blends shades of metallic eyeshadow until Sara’s eyes glow softly, framed by a set of full, false eyelashes. Sara admits she’s excited, but after so many months of planning, this morning is surreal. “It just feels like a girls’ day out right now,” she says as she makes her way to the stylist’s chair. “It won’t hit me until I put it all together.” Across the salon, mother-of-the-bride Terry Comely flips through a magazine of updos. “I still don’t know! How bad is that?” she says with a worried expression. But when the conversation turns to her daughter’s big day, she smiles. “Sara planned most of the wedding. She has her own style, a perfectionist,” she says. “She may become a Hargadine today, but she’ll always be a Comely.” Sara and her stylist, Kelly Howarth, have worked together for years. The two settle into a familiar rhythm as Howarth and an assistant layer extensions into Sara’s hair. “Guys have it so easy,” Sara says, laughing. “Dustin is probably having a beer and watching the Masters.” But not all the men are so lucky. Sara’s older brother, Vernon Comely, can’t escape the stylist’s chair today; his sister is calling the shots. He pops off his baseball cap and waits quietly as Sara instructs the stylist to trim the length and add some product. Now that the bride’s hair is 6 inches longer, Kelly and her assistant begin meticulously spraying and curling 1-inch sections. Nearly 30 minutes later, her entire head is a shining mass of brown ringlets. Kelly arms herself with bobby pins and guides the curls over one shoulder, when the bride hits her first snag. It’s the style they practiced, but today, Sara says it just isn’t right. Not to worry. Kelly patiently arranges and rearranges the curls until the revised look—a low side ponytail—brings a smile to Sara’s face. Now it’s almost perfect. Kelly removes the delicate white veil from its plastic wrapper and fluffs it behind her. Bridesmaids suddenly appear in the mirror, waiting in hushed anticipation. Kelly carefully places the comb in the brown curls and adjusts the tulle. Sara grins. It’s not just a girls’ day out anymore.

It’s almost summer and time to show some skin. If you’re a bit hesitant about wearing sleeveless tops and shorter hemlines because of a cosmetic concern, read on! It’s easier than ever to achieve healthy, beautiful arms, legs and feet.

[ battle of the bulge: sculpting arms ] If you cringe at the thought of wearing short sleeves for fear of flapping skin, take heart — there are treatments available to streamline the upper arms. >> dr. william hart, Hart Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery Institute

I don’t perform brachioplasty (arm lift surgery) often anymore. Nowadays I use BodyTite. It’s a skin-tightening device that uses radio-frequency energy. BodyTite liquefies fat, cauterizes blood vessels and tightens the fibrous tissue layers between skin and muscle. One treatment is needed. Treatment takes up to two hours and is performed in-office. We give the patient a pill for pain and a pill to relax them prior the procedure. We wait about 30 minutes and mark the location of the extra fatty tissue on their arms. The patient is injected with medication that contains a numbing agent, a vasoconstrictor and neutralizing solution. I make an incision and insert the treatment probe, which ‘melts’ the fat. A second arm of the device lies above the probe, on the outside, to monitor skin temperature and protect the patient. The patient wears a compressive garment following treatment. Traditional liposuction removes fat but doesn’t tighten skin, and lasers only treat small areas. BodyTite has a much broader stroke, is quicker and more effective.

>> dr. michele koo, plastic surgeon

If there’s a significant amount of excess skin on the upper arms, liposuction alone will not remove the problem. A skin excision from the armpit to the elbow may be necessary. If a minimal to moderate amount of skin is present, and the problem is tissue laxity, an armpit incision with liposuction may suffice. This outpatient procedure is well-tolerated with a relatively quick recovery. Patients can start driving in two to three days and return to office work in four to five days. However, they must wear a compression sleeve for the first two weeks, and should not participate in strenuous activity for about two to four weeks. Although the patient is ‘beach-worthy’ four weeks after surgery, their residual scar is sensitive to the sun and may be quite noticeable for the first six months. Brachioplasty scars tend to be dark and can widen. However, brachioplasty is a wonderful surgery. It’s very difficult, if not impossible, to spot-reduce the arms through weight loss.

[ eradicating leg veins: what’s the latest thinking? ] Varicose veins are symptoms of an underlying medical problem. >> dr. thomas wright, medical director, Laser Lipo & Vein Center

Varicose veins are associated with an underlying sapheneous vein insufficiency in about 70 percent of cases. The saphenous are major veins that start in the groin and extend to the ankle in both legs. They have valves to direct blood flow to the heart. When valves are damaged or malfunction, blood flows backward and pools in the legs and feet. Varicose veins develop. Treatment is staged, outpatient and office-based. We treat the largest first, the saphenous veins, using endovenous laser ablation. It’s an ultrasound-guided, needle-based procedure. A small laser fiber is inserted through a needle stick to access the damaged vein. The laser is turned on and pulses of light are delivered to the vein, which closes and seals shut. Varicose veins are next. They are often treated with foam sclerotherapy. That is an injection of medication that irritates and causes varicose veins to collapse. It can also be used on spider veins. Thin, tangled-looking spider veins on ankles, called telangiectasia, can be treated with sclerotherapy or with an FDA-approved radiofrequency device called Veinwave.

EVERY WOMAN DESERVES

>> dr. jeffrey jim, vascular specialist, Washington University School of Medicine

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which causes varicose veins, is a disease process. A lot of people don’t know that and disregard their varicose veins. They blow it off to genetics and tolerate the pain for years. We have ways of diagnosing and, more important, ways of treating it to make people feel better, look better and be more active. Two minimally invasive techniques to treat CVI and varicose veins are endovenous laser ablation and Venefit targeted endovenous therapy. The first procedure uses laser energy; the Venefit uses radiofrequency. In either we put a catheter into the targeted vein and use a heat source to close it. Different physicians advocate different approaches. As a group, we think the radio frequency ablation is better. Heat is more controlled. People have better outcomes. And in studies comparing the two techniques, people who have RF have less discomfort and fewer complications. However, 15 to 20 percent of patients undergoing either procedure have some residual varicosities that can be treated easily with a local venectomy. This minimally invasive excision is accomplished through nicks in the skin.

cellulite // “There’s no cure for cellulite and you’ll have limited success once it happens,” says dermatologist Dr. Joe Muccini of MidAmerican Skin Health & Vitality Center. Caffeine body wraps, applied vacuum rollers and laser liposuction devices work to an extent, says Muccini, but they’re really strategies to decrease the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite is more visible on an overweight person, but it can be found on skinny people, too, and it’s more prevalent among women. “Their skin is thinner than a man’s and the organization of their collagen is different,” Muccini explains. Age is a factor: “If you took an MRI of the thigh of a healthy and reasonably fit 18-year-old woman, you will see bone, surrounded by a thick muscle and a small component of fat,” he says. As the woman ages, she’ll lose bone, muscle mass and muscle tone. And as the muscle shrinks, fat expands and pokes through a lattice of fibrous collagen bands. Dimpled skin results. “Cellulite is less likely if you are a professional bodybuilder, a StairMaster queen or a dancer — someone who exercises vigorously and frequently and has very little body fat,” Muccini says If you exercise, lose excess weight and keep it off, you’ll have less of a problem, but you’ll still have cellulite. Muccini’s mantra? Stay lean.

[ treating your tootsies: what’s best for your feet? ] While flip-flops may look great, they’re not so hot if you have flat feet or very high arches. Toes also need extra TLC in the warmer weather.

age spots // SLUCare dermatologist Dr. Natalie Semchyshyn is going on the defensive to fight age spots from ever appearing on her skin. Besides using a daily sunscreen, the 40-something physician is donning gloves. Not boxing gloves, but lightweight cotton ones for driving. “UVA rays that cause brown spots come through car windows,” Semchyshyn says. Age spots are brown and can be flat or raised. “They can appear anywhere on the body and you don’t have to be ‘old’ to get them,” Semchyshyn says. Flat age spots result from sun exposure; raised ones are small growths. To eliminate flat age spots, Semchyshyn recommends creams with fading agents or a laser. A cream takes three to six months to work and she says it is “faster if you combine it with microdermabrasion.” Creams work best on the face and can better treat a group of spots. But lasers are quicker. Some are also rejuvenative. “They help a little bit with wrinkling,” she notes. Raised age spots can also be treated with a laser using a freezing treatment called cryotherapy, or excision. “Creams don’t work on raised age spots,” she explains. Regardless of treatment, Semchyshyn recommends you protect skin from additional sun damage with SPF 30 sunscreen.

>> dr. steven cheung, podiatrist, FOOT HEALERS

Find the best kind of shoe for your feet and their anatomy. Good supportive footgear will help prevent tendinitis and foot trauma like stress fractures. If you are an athlete, invest in shoes designed for your sport and make sure they fit. People with flat feet need motion-control shoes. People with high arches need more cushioning. People with normal or neutral arches need stability. A podiatrist or a fitter at a specialty shoe store can determine your foot type. In general, runners and walkers need shoes that bend at the ball of the foot, and have a fairly stable outsole with a rigid heel counter—that’s the curved part of the back of the shoe. Bikers need a wide toe box to accommodate the extra pressure they put on the front of their feet as they pedal. Despite their popularity, flip-flops are generally not good for your feet. They provide very little stability or support, and can be especially problematic for folks with flat feet and very high arches. These people can develop tendinitis in the ankle and plantar fasciitis (heel pain).

Feet for Life Podiatry Centers Beware of germs causing foot and toenail infections. Always wear sandals around the hot tub, pool and in shared showers. Keep your feet clean and dry as much as possible, and change socks often. Moist, sweaty feet can predispose you to infections. Surfaces around pools and bathtubs are breeding grounds for athlete’s foot, plantar warts and toenail fungus. These are the most common summer foot and toenail problems. Laser treatment is the best method for dealing with fungal nails. Treatment usually takes three to six months, depending on the person’s rate of nail growth. At our CleanSpa, which is medically supervised, we offer the Gehwol Gel Antifungal Nail. It can be applied after laser treatments for a natural-looking nail that’s pool-ready. Occasionally let your nails ‘breathe’; give them a break from chemicals and polish. It’s healthy. Our detox pedicure at CleanSpa is designed to assist the body in eliminating toxins. But don’t forget at-home nail care. This includes nail trimming, cuticle care and disinfecting shoes and nail tools.

[ problem solved! ] Groom Your Groom by lauren madras | photo by charles barnes

If he doesn’t use it already, get him whitening toothpaste. His late-night taco runs, coffee-fueled all-nighters and camping trips sans plumbing will have built up normal stains on his teeth. Plus, even conscientious brushers might not realize that coffee, tea and soda darken their teeth daily. Switching from regular to whitening toothpaste can make a dramatic difference (and you’ve gotta really stick to it, brushing with the stuff twice a day, every day.) If the paste doesn’t show a difference quickly, you have plenty of time to get to a dentist for a full treatment.

You don’t have to be middle-aged to suffer the dreaded RHL (receding hairline). But sometimes thinning isn’t about hair loss—it’s hair health. The skin on your scalp says a lot about the strength and body of your tresses. The Invati line exfoliates with wintergreen-derived salicylic acid. While the product line won’t move your hairline any closer to your brows, the hair you have will get stronger, break less and grow in more thickly.

Shower gel in the palm of your hand might get you clean, but it won’t do anything to combat rough skin. With this buffer, one side is all-natural loofah and the other is soft rayon derived from bamboo. It’s not pink or scented, which will help get your one-and-only to buff his skin smooth. Have him focus on elbows, knees, feet and hands. No, this won’t make him look better in a tux. But think about the next day when you jet off to sandy beaches! Smooth, healthy skin is better for cuddling.

We women understand the importance of moisturizer, sunscreen, primer, concealer, foundation and powder for getting camera-ready. But while some grooms might sneak a dab of cover-up from their sister or mom, most will not be sitting down in a makeup chair to prep for the big day. But you, the bride, can help his skin appear more even and less shiny by asking him to incorporate this face lotion into his morning routine. But don’t wait until the week or day of the wedding to try it (you never know what might cause a reaction!)

Guy brows are supposed to be thick, but not unkempt. You can use your regular tweezers to help him get rid of any unibrow or extremely errant hairs, but trimming his brows to an even length will provide more overall smoothness. Don’t risk it by ‘eyeing’ the situation. You’ll step back and you won’t be pleased. Instead, use this trimmer with guiding comb—you can’t take off too much and you’ll be able to match both sides easily. Give it a week or more to soften, so do it right after his pre-wedding haircut.

the] steps Brow Shaping

by lauren madras Tired. Angry. Elated. Shocked. Your eyebrows tell the story, and if you’re not careful, they might tell a story you don’t want told. Over-plucked eyebrows can increase tension in your expressions, making you seem less friendly or approachable. Not enough arch, and you may appear dull or disinterested. Ensure you have the right shape, color and density for your face by following these tips.

Reset

If you suffer from over-plucked brows, the best remedy is to suck it up and let your brows grow back. They’ll come in haphazardly, and you will have a few weeks where you are less than happy with your brow line, but it’s the best way to see the real shape of your brows and work toward a natural, flattering shape. To help tame them during the regrowth period, use a brow pencil to even the density, and a small comb to straighten hairs.

First, trim 1> Using a small lash/brow comb, brush hairs toward your hairline. 2>With a small scissors, trim hairs to the same length. 3> Comb hairs down toward eyes and trim again as needed. Then, pluck 1> After trimming, clean up the space between brows.

2>It may seem counterintuitive, but the best shape starts with a straight line. From the bottom center of your brow, trace a straight line along your bone to the place directly above your pupil. 3> Pluck any hairs that appear along or under the line—the Tweezerman model comes in fun colors, but the brand doesn’t really matter. 4> Under the second half of the brow, tweeze hairs following the natural curve of your bone. This is the easiest place to over-pluck, so make sure you take a step back from the mirror and look away after every other tweeze. When you redirect your gaze, you will see how much more you really need.

No One Will Know. Everyone Will Notice. Face, Breast & Body Surgical Procedures BOTOX Cosmetic, Facial Fillers, Fat Injections ®

Last, fill 1> Any bare patches should be filled in with a brow pencil one shade lighter than your hair color. Laura Mercier Eye Brow Pencil comes in eight shades.

2>Using feather-light strokes and going with the grain of your hair, pencil-in the entire brow

along the center line. 3> As needed, spread out the strokes to fill bare patches. 4> Finally, use your brow brush to set hairs in place. If you have brows that are a bit unruly, use some clear mascara or brow gel to set, like Sonia Kashuk Brow Gel.

Rensing’s Farm Pork Chop, Brown Sugar-Coconut Ice Cream, Smoked Shrimp, Missouri Trout, Apple Salad

This is location No. 2 for Marc Del Pietro’s The Block, and the emphasis at both is house-butchered meats and charcuterie. Meat is taken very seriously, from butchering to serving. The pork chop, steak and chicken are prepared sous vide—sealed and cooked in a warm water bath to retain moisture. And much attention is given to the details—the mustards, spreads, herb butters, reductions, crispy onions, pickled vegetables and other little meat enhancers that delight the palate. The interior (which is the former Terrene) is pretty bare in an urban-chic kind of way, with only a mounted wood picket fence as decor. As for flavors, I’d call them bold, as you’ll find lots of smoked meats, pickled vegetables and liberal salt and peppering. Our meals started out right with the Smoked Shrimp ($12), four browned crustaceans with a heavy smoked flavor sitting on creamy vegetable slaw. The seafood was delicious and well set off by a rich

herb aioli and the crisp slaw of carrots and possibly turnip or jicama. A Wild Mushrooms flatbread ($10) combined a crisp and bubbled crust with Brussels sprouts, roasted garlic, honey and balsamic. Apple Salad ($7) was stellar in its combination of baby greens, sugared pecans, creamy feta, dried fruit and honey-thyme dressing (although I would have preferred the apple slices raw). A starter I was not fond of was Potted Pig ($8). Listed on the menu as pork confit, it was a dense ‘spread’ that wasn’t very spreadable. But the accompanying grilled bread (oiled and garlicy) and house-pickled veggies—radishes, red onion rings and cucumbers— were terrific, as was the apple-raisin relish. Excellent was a pork chop from Rensing’s Farm of New Douglas, Ill., ($17). The thick chop was juicy and flavorful, and the meat was liberally salted and peppered. The sides were smashed red potatoes and sauteed spinach, both top-notch. The spinach had

lots of garlic and shallots (and plenty of salt). Don’t miss the Missouri Trout ($16), especially if it’s offered with roasted cauliflower, which is a buttery, creamy puree. The fish was rosy and moist, a big serving of both fillets heavily cornmeal-breaded— delicious and with crispy skin. A topping of crispy fried onions added more crunch (and flavor), and all sat atop a bath of herb butter broth. A special of Pan-Seared Butter Fish ($23) was also delicious, with well-conceived and executed sides of fresh peas and pea sprouts in a light parsnip broth. The fish, also known as escolar was buttery rich and had a beautiful browned sear. The peas were cooked still-firm. Desserts were an array of house-made ice creams and baked goodies, including chocolate pudding, apple tart and bread pudding. My Brown Sugar-Coconut Ice Cream ($6), with intense coconut flavor, was good and super creamy. Same for the Apple Tart ($7) with cinnamon ice cream, a buttery tarte tatin.

At the beginning, old school rock like AC/DC and Nine Inch Nails to pump everyone up. At the end of the night, I like to butcher to classical—though me wielding a bloody knife to Mozart freaks out my wife.

Summer has become one of the busiest times for theater in St. Louis and often one of the best. The Shakespeare Festival is doing Twelfth Night, one of my favorite Shakespeare comedies. Rick Dildine, executive and artistic director, is directing his first production since coming to St. Louis, and he’s come up with some intriguing ideas, including the group he has composing the music for the show. The Rats & People Motion Picture Orchestra, six St. Louis musicians, has written and performed scores for silent movies. As with all his comedies, Shakespeare sprinkled songs throughout Twelfth Night. We don’t have his tunes, and that leaves a director free today to choose music that heightens the production. It might be music that sounds Elizabethan, or it might be, as in a recent production I saw, music that echoes the popular sounds of the ’60s. With a name like The Rats & People Motion Picture Orchestra, the group seems bound to come up with something extraordinary. Opera Theatre is opening its season with Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. Like Twelfth Night, The Pirates is a comedy. Like Twelfth Night (and almost any comedy,) it tempts a company to see how much laughter their production can wring from its audience. For me, the benchmark Pirates production was the one in New York’s Central Park some 30 years ago, with St. Louis’ own Kevin Kline as the Pirate King. We have another native St. Louisan, Ryan McAdams, conducting the orchestra for Opera Theatre’s production. Might something in the water here inspire savoyards? After Pirates, Opera Theatre gets serious with two one-act operas, Il Tabarro and Pagliacci, and a newly commissioned work from jazz composer Terence Blanchard and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Michael Cristofer, Champion, about the boxer Emile Griffith and the tragic turns his life took. The season returns to romantic comedy with Bedrich Smetana’s The Kiss. Musicals abound in the summer, though America’s oldest and biggest outdoor theater, The Muny, doesn’t open its season until the middle of June with Monty Python’s Spamalot. The klezmer musical Shlemiel the First, adapted from Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Tales of Chelm, a village of fools, continues this weekend at the New Jewish Theatre. Cole Porter’s Anything Goes is spreading cheer at the Fox in a production that won cries of joy for its recent New York run. This weekend The Black Rep is opening The Wiz, and Stages St. Louis begins its season in Kirkwood rather quietly with a two-person musical about a legendary country music singer, Always . . . Patsy Cline. Another show-business legend, Neal Simon, comes to Insight Theatre Company in Webster Groves with his play, Chapter Two. It’s loosely based on his marriage to the actor Marsha Mason, a St. Louis native and graduate of Nerinx Hall, where Insight performs, and of Webster University. She’ll be in town for the production. George Bernard Shaw, of no small reputation in theater himself, shows up at ACT Inc., which performs in the theater at Fontbonne University, with his Getting Married, Shaw’s expectedly unexpected views on that institution. And his rival (at least in Shaw’s mind), William Shakespeare, moves from comedy in Forest Park to the darkest of tragedies at St. Louis Actors’ Studio in the old Gaslight Square area when King Lear is performed. Is there any kind of theater a person could want that they can’t find in St. Louis in the next few weeks? may 29, 2013

modern soundtrack, the Twenties certainly roar in The Great Gatsby. The movie is highly stylized, in director Baz Luhrmann’s way, and viewers will either love or despise the manic camerawork and the floating excerpts of Fitzgerald’s prose. But the acting is excellent and reveals the characters’ consuming selfishness. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby is impossibly charming yet vulnerable, while Carey Mulligan’s Daisy is alluring but cold. As earnest newcomer Nick Carraway, Tobey Maguire offers a subtly emotional performance that keeps the plot anchored in what little reality is left. By the climax, you won’t want to care about any of the sordid crew, but the story’s tragic force is as enthralling as that green dock light. Should You See It? Absolutely. —R.K.

What surprised me most is how little time Stark spends in the suit battling baddies. Instead, much of the film focuses on the brilliant engineering mind behind the technology and the emotional turmoil heroism brings. That said, action abounds; at one point, Iron Man rescues 13 people from a plane crash by creating a human chain—in freefall. But amid all the explosions and special effects (and there are plenty), this action film packs a surprisingly thoughtful punch, questioning what makes a hero—and how long that can last. Should You See It? Yes, it’s a great summer blockbuster with some real heart —C.K.

Yuck! What is floating in my red wine? Sediment is common in red wine. Sediment forms naturally during the fermentation process and while wine matures in the bottle. Some wines are more likely to develop it due to the thickness of the grape skin, the wine production style and the aging process in the bottle. It is perfectly harmless and can be perceived as a sign of quality, but you normally will want to separate sediment from wine before serving and drinking.

What exactly is sediment? There are two main reasons sediment forms. The initial sediment appears during fermentation and is called the ‘lees.’ Dead yeast cells, particles of grape skin, seeds, stems, proteins, tannins and other solids settle on the bottom of the fermentation tanks. Wine is left with the lees for an extended time to develop more complexity and character. The next step is a process called ‘clarification.’ Winemakers separate the wine from the lees by filtering or careful transfering from one tank to another. However, it is a common practice among cellar masters to bottle a wine without filtering because unfiltered wines develop a different texture and flavor profile. The second cause of sediment is the aging process. Sediment is a byproduct of maturation and forms from the combination of tannins and phenolic molecules. These signs of age are usually visible by the time a wine reaches 8 to 10 years. This type of sediment tastes gritty and unpleasant, and I recommend decanting the wine before drinking.

Handling your wines Treat bottles that have aged several years very gently. Hold up the bottle to the light to see if sediment has formed. If you are see particles, set the bottle upright for a day and decant carefully before serving. If you prefer to drink wines that have absolutely no sediment, avoid unfiltered or aged wines. Classic unfiltered examples are wines from Bordeaux or cabernets from Napa Valley. Unfiltered pinots are more and more common, too, especially from Sonoma County. In general, young wines and grape varieties with a thin skin are safe (pinot is an exception). I actually prefer unfiltered or aged wines; the flavor profile spans a wider spectrum and exceeds the fruity components of basic wine. A NEW PIZZERIA is coming to the Central West End. Construction of a large brick oven is underway in the first-floor commercial space of the apartment building at 4501 Maryland Ave. The leasing company and city permit department could not offer details, but renovators say the new restaurant will serve authentic Italian pizza, ice cream and coffee.

[ new in the neighborhood ]

Clayton welcomed THE LIBERTINE to its dining scene earlier this month. The restaurant, led by executive chef JOSH GALLIANO, formerly of Monarch, bills itself a ‘reimagined neighborhood eatery.’ The menu is divided into vegetable, seafood and meat categories, each with small and large plates. Desserts are homemade, cocktails are crafted from scratch, and bread is baked daily. The restaurant is open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday.

A new biergarten is coming to the ANHEUSER-BUSCH BREWERY. The courtyard, adjacent to the tour center at 12th and Lynch streets, will feature 17 beers on draft, a limited food menu and daily brewmaster’s tastings at 3 p.m. Visitors can learn about beer style, presentation and food pairing. Construction is scheduled to start in May, with project completion projected for midsummer.

URBAN CHESTNUT BREWING COMPANY at 3229 Washington Ave. is expanding to a second location at 4465 Manchester Ave., the former Renard Paper Company, in The Grove neighborhood. Urban Chestnut is partnering with Green Street St. Louis, a real estate development firm specializing in LEED certification, to build the large production site in 2014. The company estimates the 70,000-square-foot facility will create 10 full-time and 30 part-time jobs and increase beer production to 15,000 barrels a year.

DIERDORF & HART’S at 323 Westport Plaza served steak and seafood in West County for two decades prior to closing May 18.

This summer, WINSLOW’S HOME (7213 Delmar Blvd.) is expanding to add a special events dining room and second kitchen in its lower level. Now customers can sip sangria outside during happy hour at MODESTO TAPAS BAR & RESTAURANT, since the restaurant recently added patio seating. The PRESENTATION ROOM RESTAURANT at L’Ecole Culinaire now has a regular breakfast and lunch schedule, open every Monday through Thursday. Capitalizing on Americans’ increased consumption of hard ciders, ANHEUSER-BUSCH released a new beverage this month: STELLA ARTOIS CIDRE.

Every inch of space in the kitchen can be creatively customized. “Tray dividers for cookie sheets in the hard-to-reach upper sections of tall cabinets and two-tiered sliding cutlery dividers in drawers are a couple of favorite solutions,” says designer Jennifer Lewis of Signature Kitchen and Bath. BUILT-INS RULE

Rather than taking up precious counter space, homeowners are favoring built-in conveniences like espresso makers, warming drawers and microwave drawers, such as the one in this kitchen remodel by Mosby Building Arts, tucked alongside a Wolf 48” Dual Fuel Range.

“Formal dining rooms have taken a back seat to comfortable yet elegant kitchen spaces,” says designer Diane Fogerty, owner of Savvy Surrounding Style. Banquettes are making a comeback, tucked against a bay window, perhaps, and large dining tables are becoming centerpieces of the kitchen.

Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath

It’s an unwritten rule that no matter how fabulous the rest of your house is, everyone congregates in the kitchen. As the popularity of formal dining rooms continues to wane, the kitchen is becoming even more of a focal point. Here are some trends to consider if you plan to update yours:

Mosby Building Arts

Gone are the days of matching everything. Consider mixing a variety of materials to create pieces that complement each other, yet provide visual interest. “Materials can delineate space and define functional zones. Differences hint at a story and raise questions about how the parts relate to one another,” says David Scheu of McMillan Cabinets, who created the unique look in this Ladue kitchen.

Gray is the new black, according to designer Jenny Rausch of Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath. This soft neutral comes in myriad shades, and, says Rausch, “It provides a much lower contrast than black.” Pair it with white for a sleek, modern effect or with dark wood for a more traditional, elegant look.

PROBLEM: Buying and selling at the same time.

PROBLEM: I was invited to make a listing proposal on a home that had been on the market for four months with another broker.

PROBLEM: A bank short sale on our already listed property. Neither side of the sale seemed to be making any headway and the bank decidedly unresponsive to all our entreaties to speed things up with the resolution process.

SOLUTION: If you think you may be selling your house, getting your home ready is essential. De-clutter, paint, power wash, make obvious repairs etc.. That way you will be ready when you find the house of your dreams. It is also important to listen to your agent when it comes to a listing price. Serious buyers will normally not bid on a home that is priced too high. Lastly, try to get a long closing on the home you are purchasing as many sellers will not take home sale contingencies.

SOLUTION: I prepared a current market analysis and a comprehensive marketing plan; and was awarded the listing. My strategy was to reposition the listing and adjust the price. I also deployed 3 key tactics which included: editing and staging the furniture; professional photography; and writing compelling and accurate copy. My marketing plan was comprehensive and included digital, print, direct and promotional elements for maximum awareness. Showings dramatically improved and the home sold within 30 days!

SOLUTION: It took constant and daily communications with all involved, lots of hand holding, lots of patience, lots of guidance and support but it did finally result in a satisfactory sale. One of the key ingredients with this transaction was having us, the agents, keeping both parties involved and positive reinforcement all along the way. You can’t give up. Some sales are just harder and more complicated than others.

PROBLEM To save money, my clients thought they would use the existing survey for the property they were purchasing. Unfortunately, not only would the title company not insure against claims arising from boundary disputes or easements, the existing survey showed an easement was located right under the center of the home.

PROBLEM: I had a client who was buying in a condominium that has allowed rentals, and now the owner occupied to rental ratio is such that you can not find a lender.

PROBLEM: A filthy, dirty oven discovered at the final walk-thru.

SOLUTION: I worked with our closing department and the title company to verify all easements of record. We called upon a trusted surveyor and ordered a boundary survey to locate all property improvements and easements of record. The new survey revealed the easement in question was located across the back of the property and not where the previous survey had located the easement. With the new survey, the title company was happy to issue the buyer’s title insurance.

SOLUTION: If you know or think there might be rental units in the building, contact the managing agent or the listing agent and find out what the ratio is. I even send them a condo questionnaire at that time. Right now most lenders will not lend if the ratio is too high.

SOLUTION: Make sure that all of the kitchen appliances, especially the oven and the refrigerator are clean before the property goes on the market. This will be helpful for when you are busy during the moving process, you will only need to wipe down these appliances instead of giving them that through deep-down clean.

PROBLEM: Disputes between buyers and sellers regarding which fixtures the sellers can remove.

PROBLEM: The client was a bachelor living in a great house that needed some updating and TLC.

SOLUTION: The sale contract lists the items and fixtures that are automatically included with the sale. Sellers should review this list prior to bringing the house on the market and remove items they would like to move to their new home. While excluding them from contract is an option, a safer decision is to replace the items with similar fixtures before you list your home or photograph the interiors.

SOLUTION: He got married, took the house off the market to do some updating. He painted, installed new floors, and refreshed the kitchen and bathrooms. Then, he staged it so it looked welcoming and inviting, put it back on the market and it went under contract at the first open house. Clean, crisp and excellent staging are components for success!

SOLUTION: We created a plan for getting the house “sale” ready. First step was to remove everything from the house. Second step was to create a punch list of repairs, followed by painting and replacement of dated items. Third step, we priced the house to sell fast. It took about two months to get it ready. The home sold before the first agent open house.

PROBLEM: The home my buyers fell in love with had high radon levels.

:

SOLUTION During the inspection and environmental testing phase of their purchase we received a radon test indicating radon levels of 37.4 pCi /L. We thought it must be an error as the EPA protocol average is 3.0 pCi/L or below. After consulting with other McAfee agents, we learned that radon levels were unusually high in this particular area due to rock formations. We asked the Seller to immediately install a radon system to reduce levels. Within days, the new mitigation system did its job and follow-up tests showed Radon levels had gone from 37.4 pCi/ L to 0.6pCi/L, well below EPA standards.

PROBLEM Last Fall we listed a wonderful house with a 14 year old addition. The older part of the house had some “dated” paint and there was a pool table in the living room. Potential buyers could not see past this.

PROBLEM The square footage on the house I really like is less than I was expecting in this price range. Will this hurt me at the time of resale?

SOLUTION: We took the house off the market for the holidays and freshened the house with neutral paint, removed the pool table and staged the room. We received multiple offers when we brought the house back on the market. The beautiful staging and bright fresh interior made all the difference.

SOLUTION The functionality of a floor plan is all about how the square footage is used vs the actual square footage. Making sure the key areas of the home flow well is very important as well as making sure the spaces fit your everyday needs.

homework] Dear Homework,

My wife and I have extensively renovated our 1930s home over the past 12 years. The renovation has included two additions to the home, as well as a detached garage. We have done about 90 percent of the design and renovation ourselves, but are at a loss about designing a front porch. We would like something with round columns that covers the main structure. ——— Missing That Final Detail

Dear Missing That Final Detail, With your home’s simple Georgian style, you could use a new porch that makes the house look more formal (and thus more convincingly Georgian) or send it in a casual direction and make it look more like a Victorian farmhouse. I chose the former because After you asked for the porch to be wide and formal. Georgian porches usually hug the front door rather closely. I gave the main porch roof hipped ends to allow it to sit more gently onto the main façade, and I added a projecting gable center section with an arched opening to allow sight lines to your elaborate existing doorcase. The smaller, paired columns enhance the casual feel but are visually weighty enough together to be in proportion. To frame this new addition, I would suggest a few landscape enhancements. Your home is nicely framed by some beautiful large trees. I’d like to connect these with a curved bed of groundcover, centered by an ornate urn brimming with flowers. This gives the composition a Victorian air that works well with the new porch. ——— homework
