[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] Adultery, murder, desperation ... sounds like juicy pulp fiction. Actually, it’s the stuff of Pagliacci, the Opera Theatre production I saw last night. Characters in the colorful costumes of commedia dell’arte included a chorus of white-faced harlequins, a devious hunchback, a jealous husband and a sad, beautiful heroine all masking their real emotions as they performed their play within a play. It passed the ultimate acid test: I was still awake at the end (somewhere after 11 p.m.). I don’t know that much about opera, but I do know when I’m having a grand old time. I’ve been going to OTSL performances for about a decade, and each year I appreciate a little more how lucky we are here in St. Louis. The five-week season is called ‘a summer opera festival,’ and in that time, four operas are performed in repertory, so out-of-towners can see the entire season on successive days (and principals can rest their voices). It’s not every city that has a festival (it’s not even many). Opera Theatre of St. Louis has spent 38 years making opera accessible for everyone. Ticket prices start at $25, the operas are sung in English, and there are supertitles projected at each side of the stage, so if you miss a sentence, you can always read it. There are free lectures an hour before each performance and an online cheat sheet called Opera for Non-Majors that imparts basic info like what a contralto is. And—drum roll—there are covered picnic tables scattered around the Loretto-Hilton gardens, free and available for all opera-goers to enjoy (using their own food and wine, or purchasing there). If all of the above and cocktails during intermission under the stars don’t tempt you, I give up. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

COVER STORY

LEUKEMIA &] LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

by tony di martino

WHEN 50-YEAR-OLD DEBBIE GRAY noticed a couple of swollen lymph nodes on her neck, she figured she had a cold. She didn’t think anything of it. A few months later, she woke up with huge lumps all over her throat. She was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a blood cancer that compromises the body’s ability to fight infection. “The day we got the diagnosis, I felt like a lost soul,” recalls Debbie’s husband, John Gray, a master data specialist at Sigma-Aldrich. “Then it hit me: Wait a minute, I’m a volunteer at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! I called right away, and the staff was just incredible.” Within hours, LLS had delivered helpful information about treatment options and clinical trials to the Grays. Three years later, Debbie’s cancer is under control, thanks to oral chemotherapy and Rituxan, a drug developed by LLS-funded researchers. “But the chemo attacks bone marrow and might cause more cancer down the road,” Gray says. “Researchers are working on a safer drug with fewer side effects, but they’re not quite there yet. That’s why I keep running.” Gray is a coach for LLS Team in Training, a fundraising campaign for leukemia research and patient services. Now in its 25th year, TNT trains participants at every skill level to compete in national and local endurance sporting events, including marathons, triathlons and bike races. All athletes compete and raise money in honor of a patient. “Nationwide, more than 570,000 TNT participants have raised over $1.3 billion for research and services since the program began,” explains executive director Debbie Kersting of LLS Gateway Chapter. The local affiliate provides financial assistance, support groups, advocacy and education for more than 5,000 patients and families annually. Thanks to research, great strides have been made, Kersting reports: “The survival rate has quadrupled over the last 50 years, and pediatric leukemia now has a 91 percent survival rate, up from 3 percent in the 1960s.” Leukemia research benefits all cancer patients, she adds. “Of 67 cancer drugs approved by the FDA since 2000, more than 40 percent were first used as treatments for blood cancer patients.” But much remains to be done. “Every four minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer; every 10 minutes, someone dies,” Kersting says. “Leukemia and other blood cancers are the leading cause of death in kids under the age of 20. That’s why the money raised by TNT participants is so crucial to our mission.” TNT teams are now forming for fall events. Gray’s favorite team member is his wife, who walked a half-marathon shortly after she was diagnosed. “Her courage, and that of all the patients we honor, inspires me every day,” he says. “We just had our first grandchild. Like everyone else with blood cancer, Debbie has so much to live for.” That’s why developing life-extending, life-saving drugs is so crucial, he notes. “By supporting research, TNT saves lives—one mile at a time.”

[BACKTALK A NEW KIND OF ADVICE COLUMN by raschelle burton & patty hannum AS SUMMER APPROACHES MY FAMILY STARTS GEARING UP FOR OUR ANNUAL FAMILY REUNION. EACH YEAR, I GET DRAGGED INTO A POLITICAL CONVERSATION THAT NEVER ENDS WELL. I FEEL LIKE MY FAMILY POKES AND PRODS ME UNTIL I END UP ARGUING WITH THEM. ANY SUGGESTIONS? —LEFTY IN A RIGHTY FAMILY

PATTY: Oh, I have plenty of suggestions: Don’t go to the reunion, get a new family or agree with everything they say no matter how much your head feels like it will explode. Then I realized this question is not about politics but about family dynamics. Let me take a guess: You are the youngest? Your poked and prodded comment gave it away. As the youngest of six, I am all too familiar with the desire of older children to get younger ones flustered so they say something ridiculous or start screeching or yelling for their mothers. Oops, I might be projecting my own issues here. That said, you can’t change family dynamics. Try to enjoy the political conversation, know you aren’t going to agree, and fill up on the boxed wine and Jell-O mold your Aunt Betty brings. RASCHELLE: Well, this is so interesting because I’m a lefty in a lefty family. Our reunions are boring. Where’s the fun in everyone always agreeing? So, mostly I just try to mix things up a bit. Sometimes I take an opposing view just so we can all feel alive. I don’t trust it when everyone agrees; the math just doesn’t work, and I know that someone somewhere is not telling the truth. So I poke and poke until someone screams or throws a punch, then I smile and pour myself another inch of bourbon. What does this have to you with you? Nothing, really. But you may just want to appreciate your family’s willingness to embrace all points of view, openly debate the issues, and mostly you might just want to enjoy the jostle. MY GIRLFRIEND HAS JUST BECOME A VEGETARIAN, AND SHE HAS STARTED LECTURING ME ABOUT THE DANGERS OF EATING MEAT. I’M REALLY EMBARRASSED WHEN SHE TRIES TO CONVERT OUR FRIENDS TO HER WAY OF EATING. WHAT DO I DO? —MISSING MY MEAT

PATTY: I usually take a live-and-let-live approach to most problems, so I am sure our readers are expecting me to say, “Ignore her, do what you want. In time she will calm down.” But you are wrong. There is nothing worse than ‘food police.’ You know who I am talking about—the friend who comments if you eat bread, use real butter or heaven forbid, ask for the salt shaker. I know plenty of vegetarians who don’t comment or judge me for eating meat. So, my suggestion: If she doesn’t stop pontificating about her food choices and yours, break up with her. Why be in a relationship where you are guaranteed to argue three times a day? RASCHELLE: As a newly minted vegetarian, I can tell you the hardest thing about not eating animal products is overcoming the superiority complex that comes along with it. Oh yes, there’s a certain satisfaction in looking down our noses at our unenlightened, carnivorous brethren and thinking, “Ew! That filet of whatever had eyes at one point.” Having said that, I truly think her remarks come from a place of love. She’s clearly feeling better having made this switch and wants you to experience those same highs. I say talk to her and find out what’s motivating her, then I think you can choose to accept it or not. Personally, I wouldn’t end an otherwise happy relationship over meat. >> PATTY HANNUM LIKES TO DISCUSS POLITICS WITH PEOPLE WHO AGREE WITH HER VIEWS WHILE EATING A STEAK AND DRINKING A MARTINI. >> RASCHELLE BURTON ALWAYS ENJOYS A GOOD BRAWL, WITH A SIDE OF SPICY KALE CHIPS.

TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.

The good news is that the 17-year-old driver was already at the hospital emergency room and was not hurt. The bad news (for her) is that she was charged with DWI after smacking into the wall of the parking garage and another car, then backing straight into the ER doors, causing significant damage. All this occurred at about 3 a.m., after she dropped off a passenger at St. Luke’s, then tried to park. Police and emergency medical personnel say neither the driver nor anyone at the scene was injured, but that the three passengers stayed awhile in the ER … with Chesterfield police. One reportedly was sick and seeking medical attention. Although we would have liked to see surveillance video of the (phew!) minor mayhem late last month, and not just cleanup of the aftermath, the driver’s mug shot is ironic. Her T-shirt reads: ‘Celebrating Life!’ We don’t normally like to include two stories about knuckleheads in the same column, much less back to back, but this pretty much beats all: A fugitive from Clayton police escaped from the officers who’d pulled him over, pushing one aside as he fled, only to run around the block and try to seek refuge … inside County Police headquarters. Officers joked after apprehending him that he was headed straight for the county clink, which was where he wound up anyhow. Apparently he’d had a liquid lunch that maybe started at breakfast, because at 1 p.m. he apparently was intoxicated. Has the cake been taken? Well, we’ll just wait for the next drunken miscreant and the results of his or her much-clouded judgment. Fortunately, in both of these reports, no one was hurt. Unfortunately, that is not the result in too many cases when a drunk decides to venture out in a vehicle—or, perhaps, does anything besides let nature take its course and

schooler in any of our area’s well-todo districts who doesn’t already have an iPhone. Our question: Do kids nowadays actually study, or do they skim only as much information as needed by surfing the ’net?

Aron Blanke is up for a Grammy Award, but you won’t hear him perform next January. Perhaps you’ve never heard of him? Blanke, a music teacher at the Center for Creative Learning in Rockwood School District, has been named a quarterfinalist for the competition’s Music Educator Award. This new Grammy honors teachers who’ve made a significant and lasting contribution to music education. Blanke is no slouch: He’s in the top 1 percent. Of the more than 30,000 nominees, Blanke is among the 217 teachers named quarterfinalists. If selected as the winner, Blanke will be flown to Los Angeles to accept the award, attend the Grammy ceremony and receive $10,000. Blanke is already a star to his pupils: Having taught in Rockwood since 1995, this year he was recognized as Rockwood’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year.

For many of us, future highway plans are somewhere in the ether. If they build it, we’ll drive on it. For others, it’s a great idea as long as it’s somewhere else and ‘not in my backyard.’ No matter whether it’s a convenience store going up right around the corner or a major highway project for the good of all, the NIMBY folks must be heard. And they were at Shrewsbury Community Center a week or so ago. Opponents say the road is being designed more for the 1950s than 2050. Rough plans are for it to run parallel to existing infrastructure, including MetroLink tracks and the River Des Peres, from Watson Road to Hanley Road at Flora Avenue in Maplewood. This is not I-170, continued; there will be two lanes in both directions, with room for bicycles and a speed limit of about 35 mph. County traffic planners say industrial and residential areas (‘four to six properties’) would be affected. Nobody’s knocking down trees and pouring concrete this year or next; this has been on the drawing board for decades. Public comments on the two alternatives are being taken through July 19. Details are at southcountyconnector.com; two

By August, more kids in Kirkwood will get their hands on iPad minis, compliments of the district’s $1.8 million outlay for a program piloted last school year. By January 2015, all grades will have them, although from second grade down, the devices must stay in the classroom. Administrators laud the devices as a helpful learning tool and tout the savings realized through not having to replace as many textbooks. Some parents worry they provide shortcuts that cheat students out of necessary cognitive development. It gives us pause. Fewer texts? ‘Texting’ is all some kids seem to do; many never crack the textbooks they lug around in backpacks. And rare is the high

potential paths are on pages nine and 10. Mother Nature has been especially cruel to the residents of St. Charles and its county, what with three confirmed tornadoes during storms late last month and floodwaters that continue to rise. Although no serious injuries were reported, flash floods also have been a problem. The 1906 record rainfall of 1.72 inches for one day was topped May 31 with 1.74 inches. Authorities say dozens of homes were destroyed; meanwhile, the twisters rendered more than 100 uninhabitable. The resilience of storm victims continues to inspire: One girl was delighted that her doll had been located. Her dad was grateful that his Bible seemed none the worse for wear. Of course, nothing will stop a high school class from graduating: Although storm damage included a hole in the Family Arena roof, five different schools that had been scheduled to walk across the platform there managed to graduate their classes of 2013 at different locations. ago, to name a street after his wife or girlfriend: Juanita. I was sure that the misspelling, carried over for decades, was to blame. My bad. I apologize to that fellow and anyone else who may be wistful for the scenic Juniata River in central Pennsylvania. The word is thought to be a corruption of the original Iroquois for Onayutta, which means Standing Stone, a feature that disappeared from there centuries ago. So much for my certainty that Juniata was a corruption of Juanita. (How a little research can mess up an honest-to-goodness preconceived notion.) But street signs have been misspelled in St. Louis. For a few years, Harlequin Street off Arsenal was spelled ‘Harelequin,’ with an extra ‘e’. It has since been corrected, and no, yours truly, Mr. Smug, had nothing to do with that. But he is sure that, somewhere in this fair city, Westminster is spelled ‘Westminister,’ as it is on one side of a sign marking Westminster Avenue, which leads to that eponymous college in the central Missouri burg of Fulton.

There have to be more. So, let’s all get out there right now and look around. Stretch out a blanket, bring a pick-a-nick basket and maybe dance in the twilight for the next eight Monday nights at Heman Park in U. City. The city’s annual Starlight Concert Series showcases artists who play jazz, blues, R&B … as well as mix it up. Tiffany Elle will be next to grace the park’s outdoor concert stage

June 17. Fat Pocket Funk, a personal fave, will bring it July 1; they play the most muscular, horn-driven version of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition you haven’t heard yet! The remainder of the schedule: • June 24: Velvet • July 8: Mystic Voyage • July 15: Jim Stevens Group • July 22: Anita Jackson • July 29: Grand Elite • Aug. 5: Heather Dawn Band Concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. near the park’s Midland/Shaftesbury entrance.

Webster ‘Grooves’— that extra ‘O’ is compliments of Joe Schwab at Euclid Records, seller of vintage vinyl that’s been twice removed from its namesake street in the CWE. After 20-some years, the beloved indie shop moved to the DeSoto Building near Lockwood Avenue and Big Bend Boulevard, where once you could kick the tires of a DeSoto automobile. Today, Euclid occupies 8,000 square feet on three floors of 19 N. Gore Ave., offering the new and hard-to-find. So, Schwab threw a party: Webster Grooves: A Retro Soul Festival featured seven bands and plenty of dancing in the street. There was another reason to celebrate that day: May 18 was Joe and Sandy Schwab’s wedding anniversary, though it almost wasn’t. To keep her, Joe says, he had to parlay his passion for collecting records into the business of selling them.

COVER STORY

RANKEN JORDAN] by tony di martino

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A QUICK GAME OF GOLF. Sure, every now and then a sudden, spectacular shot catapults a player to the top of the leader board. But for the most part, golf requires commitment, skill and time. “Recovering from a catastrophic injury or complex medical condition is a lot like golf,” says Lauri Tanner, CEO of Ranken Jordan Pediatric Specialty Hospital. “Both take patience and determination. Victory comes gradually. There are no shortcuts.” Since 1941, Ranken Jordan has helped thousands of severely ill or injured kids get back into the swing of things. “We serve the sickest of the sick, the so-called hopeless cases,” Tanner says. “When the medical crisis is over but the patient is still too sick to go home, they come to us. We’re the bridge from acute care to home.” Ranken Jordan experts provide individualized care through inpatient and outpatient programs, a comprehensive orthopedic and rehabilitation clinic, and ongoing support for patients ages 2 weeks to 21 years. They also teach families how to continue the healing at home. Demand for the hospital’s specialized services is high, and the waiting list keeps growing. The annual Ranken Jordan Golf Tournament, a major fundraiser, takes place July 8 at Norwood Hills Country Club. The event, chaired by Steve Ricci, president of RAI Insurance Group, is sponsored by McCarthy Building Cos. Tickets start at $450 for individuals and $1,600 per foursome. Sponsorships are available. Among the many former patients returning to Ranken Jordan for the event is 15-year-old Sam Ward, who has cerebral palsy. “When Sam came here four years ago as an outpatient, he told us he wanted to be a golf pro when he grew

up,” Tanner recalls. “He was confined to a wheelchair at the time, but that didn’t discourage him—or us.” Participating in golf therapy and other rehabilitation programs, he improved his hand-eye and muscle coordination tremendously. Impressed, Tanner invited him to join her foursome at the next annual tournament. “By then, he’d progressed from a wheelchair to a walker, and he played 18 holes like a champ.” The next year, he barely needed LAURI TANNER, MIKE MATHENY the walker. “Then last year, I PHOTO BY BILL BARRETT heard somebody call my name. It was Sam—and he ran across the parking lot to greet me.” Sam’s journey from wheelchair to walker to moving on his own didn’t happen overnight. But slow, steady, lasting progress is what Ranken Jordan is all about. “Some places hand you the bill and say, ‘You’re on your own,’” Tanner says. “Not us. We stand by kids until they’re ready to face the world again, physically and emotionally stronger than before.”

THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS have had a good start to the season, posting winning months for April and May. They’ve done this despite sustaining key injuries to closer Jason Motte, left-hander Jaime Garcia, Chris Carpenter and Jake Westbrook. Meanwhile, the Cardinals bullpen imploded—but it gave other young players a chance to shine. While it’s still very early in their careers, here’s a look at some youngsters who have made an immediate impact with the Cardinals and a couple of prospects waiting their turns in the minor leagues. MICHAEL WACHA // #52 // SP >> Top prospect in Memphis, with a 4-0 record >> Throws in mid- to high 90s with his fastball, but also throws a nasty slider and curve ball >> Struck out 40 while walking just four in 21 innings, moving from rookie ball through Double-A Springfield in 2012 >> Threw seven innings, giving up only one run in first major league start

J

CARLOS MARTINEZ // RP >> Helped stabilize bullpen upon being called up from Double-A Springfield >> Struck out seven in first seven innings pitched as a major leaguer >> Throws an above-average fastball >> Could be serious contender for a spot in the starting rotation sooner than later MATT CARPENTER // #13 // 2B

>> Can flat-out hit >>Has been good defensively at second base, a position he learned at the major league level >> Stepped into the lead-off role, and despite not having typical lead-off hitter speed, has excelled >> Versatile enough to play 1B or 3B if needed

J

OSCAR TAVARES // RF >> Came into this season as the No. 3 rated overall prospect in baseball by Baseball America and MLB.com >> Top Cardinal offensive prospect since Albert Pujols >> Hit 23 HRs and drove in 94 runs in 2012 campaign at Double-A Springfield >> Most assuredly will be playing either right or center field for St. Louis, starting in 2014 TREVOR ROSENTHAL // #26 // RP >> Throws in the high 90s >> Great movement on his fastball >> Hits his spots >> Became an integral part of the bullpen following season-ending injury to Motte JOHN GAST // #64 // SP >> Won his first two major league starts after replacing Westbrook before going to the DL >> Crafty left-hander providing depth to an injured rotation >> Keeps hitters off-balance >> Has adjusted to the big leagues quickly after going 31-16 in three minor league seasons SHELBY MILLER // #40 // SP >> Immediately solidified a starting rotation, winning the last open spot following Carpenter going on the disabled list >> Throws in the mid 90s >> A great combination of power, speed and precision >> Will be a key part of Cardinals rotation for years to come SETH MANESS // # 61 // RP >> Made an impact as soon as he was called up from Triple-A Memphis, winning his first three decisions >> Helped stabilize a bullpen showing cracks >> Has great control, walking no one in his first seven appearances

TOWN TALK

TIME OUT... WITH JOHN SMOLTZ

by jeff melnick

HE IS THE ONLY MAJOR-LEAGUER in history to win more than 200 games as a starter and save more than 150 games— all in just four seasons. Now John Smoltz is an analyst for TBS and the Major League Baseball network. The 46-year-old former Cardinal and future Hall of Famer sat down with Town & Style and gave his thoughts on his new career, the current Cardinals team and, of course, his love of golf.

Q.HOW WAS THE TRANSITION FROM BALLPLAYER TO BROADCASTER? A. It went pretty smoothly. It’s my third year, and I’m still learning which information to take in and which to discard. I enjoy it. Q.THE NATIONAL AUDIENCE HAS BEEN RECEPTIVE TO YOU AND FORMER METS PITCHER RON DARLING ON THE TBS BROADCASTS. WHAT KIND OF REACTION HAVE YOU GOTTEN? A. If it’s 50-50 and each audience (especially in the playoffs) thinks you’re rooting for the other team, it’s a pretty good broadcast. As a national broadcaster, there’s no such thing as rooting for a team. I guess I’ve heard more compliments. Q.WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS YEAR’S CARDINALS TEAM? A. Certain organizations find a way to do it right, so this is no surprise, even though there are 10 rookie

pitchers, which is unheard of. They find a way to involve character and mix it with talent, and it shows.

Q.HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THIS MANY ROOKIES AND YOUNG PITCHERS MAKE AN IMPACT IN A SEASON? A. Normally that’s a last-place team. It’s impressive. The one thing we have yet to see these guys go through is some adversity to see how they handle it, but I’m impressed with how they’ve gone about their business. It’s the Cardinal way. Q.YOU ARE ONE OF THE FEW PITCHERS EVER TO MAKE THE TRANSITION SUCCESSFULLY

FROM STARTER TO CLOSER, SO WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON EDWARD MUJICA AS THE CARDINALS CLOSER? A. Everyone assumes that a set-up guy or a middle-relief guy could eventually take that role, but it’s not the case. It takes a special person. It’s rare that you get a guy to step in and do as well as Mujica has, so it’s a credit to him.

Q.WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT WHEN YOU COME TO TOWN? A. There’s so many, but I would go with Tony’s. Q.FAVORITE ACTIVITY WHEN NOT BROADCASTING? A. Golf. Everywhere I go, I think golf first. There are so many great golf courses here. St. Albans is great. I try

and get out there as much as I can.

Q.WHAT DO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING? A. I like to get outdoors as much as possible. We’ve got every activity in our backyard that you can imagine.

Volleyball has become a popular sport in our family, and I love to bowl.

Q.FAVORITE BALLPARK AS A PLAYER AND AS AN ANALYST? A. Obviously Busch Stadium is a great ballpark. As a player, I loved Turner Field (Atlanta). I spent most of

my time there. As an analyst it sometimes depends on the booth you’re in. I would have to say that the place I’d never been to in my entire baseball career that I got to do a game as an analyst was Kansas City. It’s a beautiful ballpark.

meet the designer

Armed with her father’s golf clubs, Ellen Port started her game at 25, much later than most. But she’s more than made up for lost time in the last 27 years, winning eight state titles and six national championships. Port competes in both women’s amateur and senior women’s amateur tournaments. “I’m at the perfect stage to compete,” she says. “I’m playing in the women’s amateur with the best young players in the world and the best older players in senior amateur.” Port never set out to be a pioneer in a traditionally male-dominated sport; she just wanted to golf against the best. “I’ve played in men’s tournaments and always been welcomed,” she says. “Everybody I’ve played with has treated me with great respect. I didn’t want to prove anything, I just didn’t have that many tourneys to play. Women don’t have the same number of tournaments that men do at mid-amateur.” But that is rapidly changing. Port will play a key role when she captains the 2014 Curtis Cup team. The international women’s amateur tournament between a U.S. team and a Great Britain/Ireland team takes place at St. Louis Country Club in 2014. Port played on the eight-member team in 1994 and 1996 and was proud to be named captain. “Martha Lang, who was my captain in 1996, made the call as the head of the women’s committee,” she says. “It’s a great honor.” Port coaches golf at John Burroughs School, but weekends and summers find her traveling for golf. “I enjoy every aspect of the game,” she says. “I’m still competitive, but I look through the eyes of a coach now. I’m at the sweetest spot in golf.”

| Jeff Johnson | Ballwin resident Jeff Johnson has had a lot of great moments in his golf career, but his favorite wasn’t a state championship or a prestigious title. It was a parent-child tournament with his daughter, Julianna, in 2008. Johnson shot a hole-in-one that day, and the pair ended up winning the tourney by just one stroke. “I hadn’t made one since I was 15,” he recalls. “She was really excited, and I was, too.” Johnson won the amateur St. Louis District Championship in 2012 and was named Missouri Amateur Golf Assocation Senior Player of the Year in 2012 and 2011, though he plays in both senior and regular amateur events. “I would like to win the senior state championship. I like to try to win a tournament every year,” he says. “I’m always trying to get better. There’s always room for improvement.” Johnson first took up the game at age 12 for one simple reason: “I couldn’t hit a curve ball in baseball,” he says, laughing. “I was 5 feet tall and played football and got my brains beat in. I thought, This is not my gig. I want to golf.” He had solid role models at Forest Hills Country Club. “I worked hard at it,” he says. “We had a lot of good players at my club, and I wanted to be as good as them.” Golf has sustained relationships from college and he still plays former teammates today. “I developed relationships when I played on the golf team at Mizzou, and we’ve been friends for 35 years,” he says. “That’s how golf is: When you aren’t in the mix, you’re rooting for them to do well.”

| Skip Berkmeyer |

TOWN TALK

Skip Berkmeyer’s winning strategy is deceptively simple. “It’s all about controlling the damage,” he says. “As soon as you let something slip, it suddenly becomes your weakness. If I drive well and short putt well, it’s hard to play too poorly.” It may sound pessimistic, but it’s paid off. The current St. Louis men’s amateur leader has won three state championships and was named MAGA Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012. Amateur golf prowess just might be an inherited trait in the Berkmeyer family; his mother, Barbara Berkmeyer, holds dozens of amateur championship titles. Berkmeyer has played golf “as long as I can remember. I was a country club brat, so when my parent went to the golf course, I went, too.” An athlete who dabbled in other sports as a kid, Berkmeyer ultimately chose golf because of the personal challenge. “It’s about beating my own score,” he says. “I don’t have to rely on a teammate to practice. It’s all on me. There are no politics involved in golf; shoot low and you win. It was something I could do for the rest of my life.” Berkmeyer says St. Louis provides a great variety of challenging public and private courses and has produced some powerful players. “As far as talent goes, were in the top third in state competition,” he says. “A lot of USGA champs have been here.” The Wildwood resident says playing in the amateur league fuels his competitive spirit and keeps him in fighting form. “I have to play with something on the line,” he says. “You can’t get better by playing once a week. You get a taste of winning by playing at a high level: That’s what drives me.”

2013 is a reassessment year. St. Louis County will post new values online in March. In most cases you WILL NOT receive a reassessment notice as you have in years past. This new “appraised” value will be used to determine your property taxes for 2013 and 2014. Even if the assessor lowers the value, we have found they did not lower the value enough to reflect actual market declines. Get your FrEE 2013 review started today!

[ NOSTALGIA ] BUSCH STADIUM by judy goodman

AS CARDINALS NATION, we’re a town that eats, lives and breathes baseball. And while it’s the team we all go to see, our stadium is pretty cool, too—and so is our stadium history. I remember as a kid going to my first professional baseball game at Sportsman’s Park, located on the corner of Grand Boulevard and Dodier Street, home to both the American League’s St. Louis Browns and the National League’s St. Louis Cardinals. First called the Grand Avenue Ball Grounds, it was renamed Sportsman’s Park in 1876. The American Association’s St. Louis Brown Stockings team was founded in 1882, then moved to the National League in 1892 as the St. Louis Browns. In 1899, the team was temporarily called the Perfectos, and in 1900, it officially became the St. Louis Cardinals. Meanwhile, in 1902 the Milwaukee Brewers came to St. Louis, renamed the team the St. Louis Browns and played in the NOW American League. The Cardinals played at Robison Field, a vacated iteration of Sportsman’s Park at Natural Bridge and Vandeventer, where its wooden stands were deteriorating. In 1920, the team moved into the newer version of Sportsman’s Park, one of few steel and concrete stands in those days, as tenants of the Browns. While the Browns initially were more successful, the tide soon turned. In 1926, Sportsman’s Park saw its first World Series—only it was the Cardinals, not the Browns, who upset the Yankees in a nail-biting game seven. In 1944, the World Series was an all-St. Louis affair, matching the Browns and Cardinals in what was known as the Streetcar Series. It was only the third time in history that both teams shared the same home field. The Cards club included MVP Marty Marion and future Hall of Famer Stan Musial. The Browns, suffering heavily from losses to the World War II draft, were defeated by the Cards. Eventually, supporting two teams was too difficult for the city. While owner Bill Veeck wanted the Browns to remain in St. Louis, Cardinals’ owner Fred Saigh negotiated a deal with Anheuser-Busch in 1953, ensuring the team’s financial future. So Veeck sold the stadium for $800,000 and moved his Browns to Baltimore. Sportsman’s Park/Busch Stadium was given a much-needed face-lift and proudly displayed its iconic flying eagle after every home run. In 1966, Busch Stadium was built, designed by St. Louis engineering firm Sverdrup & Parcel. The stadium’s signature ‘crown of arches’ reflected a newly completed Gateway Arch seen in the distance. A multi-purpose sports facility, it doubled as home to the National Football League’s Cardinals until 1987. While people heralded that doughnut design, it endured its fair share of wear and tear. In late 2005, it succumbed to new trends and was replaced by the ‘retro-style’ Busch Memorial Stadium. Opened with great fanfare for the 2006 season, the 46,000-seat ballpark became the first stadium in nearly 100 years to be home to a World Series win in its inaugural season. This stadium offers a spellbinding left-field view, treating fans to a striking outline of the Old Courthouse and the glimmering legs of the Gateway Arch. Both are reminders of our city’s signature downtown and represent hope for its urban future. There’s so much love, philosophy and trivia associated with baseball, we can hardly scratch the surface. DOWNTOWN

FLYING SAUCER: This St. Louis sports bar rookie with more than 250 brews gets you as close to the action as possible without actually being on the field: You can hear fans in the ballpark cheer from its patio and beer garden.

MIKE SHANNON’S: If it’s named after a sports announcer, it’s gotta be the real deal. A rowdy crowd makes the big patio a lively place to be on game day.

JOE BUCK’S: Big portions of American food favorites ensure this loft-like restaurant is packed when the Cardinals are in town.

MIDTOWN

THE SHACK: Elbow your way past the college crowd and into this brick bar known for it’s better-than-average pub grub, like the signature Shack-wich stuffed with fries, coleslaw and meat, and its canoe-turned-table.

CENTRAL WEST END

LESTER’S: This classy establishment elevates the genre, but still serves the big bowls of nachos you expect at a sports bar. The rooftop patio with flat-screen televisions offers a good view of the neighborhood and the game.

RICHMOND HEIGHTS

MIKE DUFFY’S: Every evening brings something special to this joint, from karaoke night to off-color trivia games popular with Washington University students. Beer deals, burgers and soft pretzel sticks keep ’em coming in.

MAPLEWOOD

THE POST: Not many bars boast their very own philosophy, but this one was founded to promote an “innovative lifestyle of relaxation” known as “posting,” the primary tenets of which require easy access to finger foods, alcoholic beverages and televisions.

LADUE

SPORTSMAN’S PARK: Co-opened in 1974 by NFL hall of famer Jackie Smith, this tiny establishment named for the former St. Louis Browns and Cardinals stadium is ‘old school’ in every sense and serves two generations of regulars. .

CHESTERFIELD

THE SPORTS PAGE: Neon beer signs illuminate this West County classic, also opened in 1974. Pool tables and dart boards provide active entertainment for customers, who like the wings.

THE POLO FIELD FIRST DREW Margaret Lipman and Stephen A. Orthwein Jr. together as children, when they watched their fathers compete in matches. The equine-oriented couple will marry Sept. 28 at Graymar Farm, the bride’s family estate in Franklin, Tenn. Years after their sideline spectator days, the pair reconnected at Margaret’s sister’s wedding. Steve’s dancing skills prompted Margaret to invite him to The Swan Ball, Nashville’s annual white-tie gala supporting Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Art Museum. They dated long-distance for a year, with Margaret working in Nashville for her family’s spirits distribution businesses, Lipman Brothers and Lipman Brands, and Steve working in St. Louis for insurance brokerage The Daniel and Henry Co. He also frequently travels for polo matches and equestrian real estate projects.

After seeing a show Dec. 7 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Steve proposed to Margaret at Robert’s Western World, where they sealed the engagement with a dance. The couple celebrated with Steve’s friends and family at the St. Louis Country Club May 18. Margaret will wear the veil of Steve’s great-grandmother, Clara Busch, to the black-tie ceremony, where a rabbi and a pastor will officiate. The bride has friends coming in from Australia, where she lived for six years. The couple, who currently split time between Nashville, Florida, and a Central West End apartment, will spend their honeymoon in Africa, relaxing for a week on the coast of Mozambique before embarking on a horseback safari in Botswana. “We’re really excited and feel lucky and blessed,” Margaret says.

in a rocking chair. The writer and journalist is busy attending and coordinating speakers at The Gatesworth—and attending their presentations as a resident there. As a member of The Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis, she recently invited Ray Hartmann, owner of St. Louis Magazine, to speak to Gatesworth residents. “The people here are really smart and up-to-date on things. They are well-read and want to know what’s going on in the world,” she says. “The Press Club speakers are a different perspective than usual. We have all kinds of speakers; this just adds another dimension.” Kagan Frohlichstein and her husband Harvey have lived at The Gatesworth for almost two years, and she says they chose this community because of its many diverse activities. A variety of physical and intellectual pursuits is key to a balanced, exciting retirement, she says. “I think it’s important to use your mind at any age. It enriches your life,” Kagan Frohlichstein says. “If you’re going to sit down and be a mushroom, you may as well not be here. I don’t think any other place equals the amount of opportunities for learning, having fun and exercising. You can do whatever you want or nothing, and it’s nice.” When her husband became ill, he moved to McKnight Place Extended Care, just a short distance from The Gatesworth. The proximity allows the couple, who have been married 37 years, to still spend quality time together. “He comes over, and we have dates three times a week for happy hour,” Kagan Frohlichstein says. “It’s a very good arrangement. It’s our chance to really talk to each other. We’re lucky we can do that. If I were far away, I’d have to have someone transport him.” Jim Henderson is another Gatesworth resident whose desire for community opened up a world of knowledge. “Apartments are not great for association with other people,” Henderson says. “Here, it’s easy to meet people, and most are very receptive. I needed a community, and The Gatesworth performed extraordinarily well.” When he moved in nine years ago, Henderson knew nothing about computers or Shakespearean sonnets. Then he enrolled in the Lifelong Learning Institute at Washington University, a series of education programs taught by peers who are experts in their field. “I live among interesting people,” Henderson says. “I find that very refreshing. Currently, I’m into learning about the formation of Italy from several people’s estates. The class is taught by a peer from U. City who used to be a teacher at the high school and was born in Italy.” Henderson also keeps physically fit in exercise classes that focus on balance and breathing. He also takes leisurely 1.5-mile walks around the Gatesworth grounds and makes use of the weight-training equipment. “There is no stimulus if you do the same thing every day,” he says. “I like to be stimulated by conversation and activities, and they are available at The Gatesworth.”

With advances in medicine and technology, including dental implants and improved joint replacements, many seniors are maintaining full and active lifestyles well into their golden years.

[ joint replacement ]

[ regaining balance ]

More than 1 million people undergo a hip or knee replacement each year, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Each year, one in three adults age 65 and older falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Addressing issues that affect balance, such as inner ear and vision problems, is an important way to prevent falls.

>> dr. jason young, ORTHOPEDIC ASSOCIATES

Joint replacement surgery, such as a knee or hip replacement, can help people with severe arthritis regain a healthy, pain-free lifestyle. Typically, patients consider joint replacement after trying more conservative options such as modifying activities, physical therapy, oral anti-inflammatories and injections in the arthritic joint to reduce inflammation. Once these options are no longer controlling the pain, I recommend patients take the time to understand the details of the surgery and rehabilitation in order to obtain maximum results. Joint replacement surgery can be extremely helpful to reduce pain, but requires dedication and determination to work through the necessary rehabilitation. Physical therapy is initiated quickly after surgery to help the patient obtain motion and strength. Our goal is to get these patients moving quickly, as this reduces surgery risks. Today’s implants are more anatomic, allowing more normal motion. In addition, the implants are designed with better materials, which are resilient to wear and increase the longevity of the implant.

>> dr. jeffrey whiting, SLUCARE/ST. MARY’S HEALTH CENTER

The average age of people needing joint replacements is going down for a number of reasons. Baby boomers are more active, which leads to wear and tear on their joints. The increased prevalence of obesity and diabetes, which are linked to arthritis, also plays a role. And surgeons are changing their views on the procedure because the implants have improved dramatically in design and materials. Whereas previous implants typically lasted 10 to 15 years, today’s implants may last 20 years or more, depending on the individual’s lifestyle. Your overall health prior to surgery is a strong indicator of how well you will do with joint replacement. It’s important for patients to have diabetes under control and stop smoking before the procedure, to aid the healing process. To get the longest life out of your implant, continue regular follow-up with your doctor. If implants start to show wear, it is easier to address the problem early with a small tweak rather than replacing the whole implant. Overall, the procedure is effective in reducing pain and improving function. Patients often say they wish they had gotten the joint replacement sooner.

>> dr. james benecke, MISSOURI BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER

Vertigo is a sensation of motion—like the world is spinning or you’re being pushed in one direction or another-—caused by problems in the inner ear. Sometimes the sensation is so strong that individuals lose their balance and fall. Vertigo is common and can affect people of all ages. It can be especially dangerous for seniors, who are more likely to be seriously hurt from a fall. We also worry about people having a dizzy spell while driving. I frequently see patients who’ve been told nothing can be done to treat their condition. If you’re experiencing dizzy spells, seek the advice of an ear specialist experienced in treating patients with inner ear disorders. If the dizziness is caused by an inner ear problem, we will pinpoint the exact cause of the vertigo to determine the appropriate treatment. Vertigo is often treated with medication. Other treatment options include physical or vestibular therapy or an Epley maneuver, which can quickly treat a specific form called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. In some cases we can’t completely eliminate the symptoms, but we can almost always improve the patient’s quality of life.

>> dr. josh amato, MERCY ST. LOUIS.

Eyesight can affect balance in many ways. Our vision provides constant feedback, which helps us make small posture adjustments to maintain balance. Anything that reduces visual acuity or contrast sensitivity, such as cataracts or macular degeneration, can impair our ability to maintain balance. When one eye is affected more than the other, people can have difficulty with depth perception and risk falling. Similarly, conditions that affect peripheral vision, such as glaucoma or stroke, can reduce the ability to detect obstacles in one’s pathway. The connection between eyesight and falling is common, and the risk increases with age as vision problems become more common. Although not all balance issues are related to vision, it’s important to maximize your vision. Many people aren’t aware that they simply need glasses or they have been developing cataracts over the years. If vision is permanently affected by a condition, we can counsel the patient and family about the visual deficit. The risk of falling can be reduced when one understands how to adjust the environment to account for it.

staying social // Fear of falling, depression and memory problems are common reasons why some people become more reclusive as they age, according to DR. JOHN MORLEY, SLUCARE GERIATRICIAN. But there are many benefits to staying active and engaged. “Interacting with people almost always improves your mood,” Morley says. “Just going to church or synagogue or connecting with family and friends can provide support that is very important as you get older, particularly if you lose a spouse and are alone.” Additionally, studies have shown that people who exercise regularly can prevent or slow down the progression of dementia. There are many things family members and friends can do to help loved ones stay connected. “Get them involved in senior centers— there are excellent centers in the St. Louis area that provide activities for older people, even those who are memory-impaired,” Morley says. “Encourage them to go to church regularly, or even just get out of the house for a walk. Having an active mind and an active body are key to aging successfully.”

fit for life // “It’t never too late to reap the benefits of a well-rounded exercise program,” says ERIC EMIG, A PERSONAL TRAINER AT EVOLUTION FITNESS. “Many of our clients report they have more energy and stamina, recover quickly from past injuries, have an improved golf game, can enjoy and keep up with their grandchildren more, and even enjoy deeper, more restful sleep.” Exercise is important at any age, but for seniors, it’s imperative, according to Emig. In addition to general health benefits, exercise can help seniors address balance issues to prevent falls, slow or reverse bone and muscle loss, increase flexibility, mobility and coordination, and alleviate arthritis symptoms. Emig advises clients who are not already exercising to start with a walking program. “Start slow, walking a few days per week for several minutes at a time,” he says. Once you’re able to walk 30 minutes at a time, five days per week, consult a professional who can design a proper strength training program. Finally, consider adding a stretching program and exercises to address balance issues, such as stability ball exercises. “Building strength and power will help you stay independent and make day-to-day activities easier,” Emig says.

outer enamel of each tooth to place a crown over it, which is attached to the replacement tooth being placed in the gap. This can weaken an otherwise healthy tooth. The success of the replacement tooth is dependent on these adjacent teeth that now anchor the bridge in place.

>> dr. john monterubio, MONTERUBIO AND HERBOSA ORAL

AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots used to replace teeth that are lost due to dental disease, such as cavities or periodontal disease, trauma or congenital absence. They provide stability to tooth replacement. Candidates for the procedure need healthy bone and adequate bone volume to support the implants. Bone grafting is an option to improve bone volume, though. The best way to determine if a patient is a candidate is with a comprehensive oral exam and a 3-D X-ray. The surgery is usually minimally invasive and takes less than two hours, depending on the number of implant fixtures placed. It will take eight weeks for the implants to fully heal and bond to the jaw bone. The final crown or denture is not placed until the site is fully healed, to avoid pressure or micro-movement. However, there are various options for temporary tooth placement to help the patient through this transition time. More dental plans are offering coverage for dental implants, which generally cost 20 to 50 percent more than a traditional crown and bridge treatment.

Experts say dental implants are growing in popularity because they’re durable and look and function like real teeth.

When you’re missing teeth, simple things like enjoying a meal at a restaurant, speaking in public or even kissing are a real problem. Missing teeth also can dramatically affect your self-esteem. Many people are embarrassed by their appearance and may avoid smiling or social situations. Traditional tooth replacement options like removable dentures or bridges also can present challenges. When a tooth is removed, the bone underneath shrinks and the gum tissue caves. As a result, in as little as six months, there will be a deformed area in the mouth that may affect your appearance and the way dentures fit. Loose dentures are uncomfortable and can cause sore spots. And it may still be difficult to eat hard foods like apples with dentures. A bridge fills the gap in your smile, but doesn’t replace the tooth itself. Further, the bridge only gains strength from the adjacent anchor teeth. Fortunately, there is another option: dental implants. With titanium screws placed in the jaw to hold the denture or crown firmly in place, individuals with dental implants can eat and speak with confidence. Dental implants also prevent bone loss. And they’re durable: It’s unlikely you’ll ever need to replace an implant.

l Weight loss, toning,

If one of the supporting teeth needs to be removed, a new bridge, or longer bridge, needs to be made.

We have spoken before about the value of dental-implant supported replacement teeth for people missing some of their teeth or all of their teeth. Due to advances in preventive dentistry, many people between the ages of thirty and sixty are more likely to be missing only one or two teeth. The reason for losing a tooth is most often decay, localized gum disease and bone loss or trauma resulting in fracture. When a tooth is lost, it is usually best to replace it to maintain your bite and prevent other teeth from shifting and causing more localized bone loss. One of the most common methods for replacing a lost tooth used to be placement of a three-unit bridge. Much like a bridge on a highway, a three-unit dental bridge is placed over the gap or space created by the missing tooth. It relies on the support of the teeth on either side of the space to actually bridge the gap and restore the tooth it replaces. Before the dental implants were available, this was the gold standard for replacing a missing tooth. There are several challenges with a three-unit bridge. It relies on the integrity of the adjacent teeth for its support. If the teeth are healthy and do not have fillings or crowns on them, they must be prepared for the bridge. This means removing enough of the protective

Cleaning with dental floss becomes a challenge, as the floss actually needs to be threaded under the replacement tooth before flossing can begin. Without the stimulation provided by the missing tooth’s root, the underlying jawbone will gradually shrink and space may become visible where the root was once positioned. Fortunately, a dental-implant supported replacement tooth can now be inserted instead of a three-unit bridge. It does not require reducing the enamel of the adjacent teeth. Implants stimulate the supporting jawbone so that the shrinkage does not occur and they can be flossed just like your natural teeth. If one of the adjacent teeth needs repair or removal, the dental implant supported replacement tooth is not affected. The resulting function and look of the dental implant is similar to your own teeth and does not compromise its healthy neighboring teeth. Keep in mind that in some situations, fixed bridges are still an acceptable or recommended replacement option. If you are missing one or two of your own teeth or believe you may soon need one removed, you can find out more information by calling our office at 314-721-1010 for a consultation appointment, and we can discuss your specific needs. Dr. John Monterubio is a board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who specializes in the placement of dental implants. He has been serving patients throughout the Saint Louis area for more than 25 years. Please visit us online at OralSurgerySTL.com for more information.

[ the routine ] WORKOUT I have a 5-mile route I do first thing, by 6 a.m. I follow that with an 18-mile bike ride immediately after. If I’m able to, in the evening I’ll play some tennis with my daughter. On the weekends I try to push it. DIET I’m pretty much on no junk food; they say that sugar feeds cancer. I eat a lot of vegetables and fruits. There are protein supplement products I add to a milkshake, with a couple of multivitamins to fight infections, and magnesium, which is supposed to mitigate the side effects of neuropathy. I add calcium, whole strawberries, blueberries and papaya juice. Sometimes I throw in some ice cream to make it taste a bit better. I try to get one of those in a day, in addition to regular meals of fruits and veggies, fish and some chicken.

ED HEIGL, 57, RAN THREE RACES in the Memorial Day St. Louis Senior Olympics with a chemotherapy pump attached to his chest. Finding three tumors on his liver last year has not kept the the former Ritenour High School and Saint Louis University running star, who once clocked a 4 minute, 8 second mile, from lacing up his sneakers. “The doctors are amazed,” Heigl says. “They know of no one who runs with the chemo pump on.” When Heigl’s diagnosis came in May 2012, the prognosis was grim. “The first doctor gave me no hope, said it was fatal,” Heigl says. “I got a second opinion, and the doctor said, ‘If you follow through with chemo and surgery, there’s a chance we can cure you.’” The first round of treatment was tough, he reports, but didn’t immobilize him, even when neuropathy numbed his feet. “I forced myself to walk around the block, then ran around it, then ran around the neighborhood, ran miles, and did a half-marathon,” he says. “I have to watch when I run sometimes; I can’t feel the ground very well.” Feeling confident about his chances in short-distance races, he chose the 50-, 100and 200-meter events at the senior Olympics, placing 5th in the 200. Unable to sleep through the night, Heigl often rises around 3:30 a.m. and tackles his email inbox, before heading outside to bike and run. He works from home doing outreach and marketing as the area director of operations for Spectrum St. Louis, which is opening a new senior living facility in Creve Coeur. “Caring for seniors has been my career for 33 years,” Heigl says. “I never feel comfortable unless I know everything in the building that needs to be done has been done. It’s difficult now because I’m the one who’s being taken care of.” Heigl credits his high school coach with training him to persevere. “He taught me how to push through adversity, never give up, never give in,” he says. “After running 100,000 miles, I know what my limits are and when I need to back off. I’m able to push myself beyond fatigue if I use my will.” Heigl’s former Ritenour teammates organized a run to honor him and their coach. “It’s probably been one of the happiest years in my life, despite having to deal with cancer,” Heigl says. “I’ve had amazing support from places I never expected.” 46 |

Artificial sweetener sucralose, known as Splenda, may affect metabolism more than previously believed, according to a new study at Washington University School of Medicine. Researchers found that obese subjects—people to whom artificial sweeteners are often recommended to help limit calorie intake—showed elevated insulin levels after consuming sucralose, a phenomenon which could contribute to Type 2 diabetes.

improving infant health Losing weight between pregnancies contributes to improved health for subsequent babies, a Saint Louis University study found. Obese women who lost weight after giving birth were more likely to have normal-sized second babies. Large infants have an increased risk for low blood sugar, jaundice, childhood obesity and metabolic syndrome. Dr. Arun Jain, visiting scholar in the SLU department of obstetrics, gynecology and women’s health, led the study.

fighting infections The New England Journal of Medicine published a major study with implications for reducing infections in hospital intensive care units. The results show that bathing patients every day with antimicrobial soap and applying antibiotic ointment in their noses lowered the number of bloodstream infections by 44 percent. These measures also decreased the number of patients who carry MRSA. Washington University School of Medicine researchers, including department head Dr. Victoria Fraser, Adolphus Busch Professor of Medicine, helped to oversee to the study.

metal menace Cadmium, a metal commonly used in batteries and found in some foods, has possible ties to uterine cancer. Researcher Jane McElroy at Missouri University School of Medicine was awarded a $708,000 grant from the American Cancer Society to study the metal’s effects on women’s health, using data from the Missouri Cancer Registry. McElroy previously led a study that found women with higher levels of cadmium in their bodies have a higher risk for developing breast cancer.

hydration help Studies at Saint Louis University’s Center for World Health and Medicine could develop drugs to treat childhood diarrhea, the second-leading cause of death among children around the globe. Researchers are analyzing different forms of anti-secretory drugs, which could prevent dehydration by slowing the production of fluids that flush out of the body, thereby stopping diarrhea and giving patients a chance to take in more liquid. The center recently received a $750,000 research grant from the PATH Drug Development Global Program.

THIS NEWLY OPENED RESTAURANT is on the main floor of Park Pacific condominiums, in the historic old Missouri Pacific Railroad Headquarters. It’s owned and operated by The Lawrence Group design and architectural firm, and furnishings are ‘retro modern’ (think Mad Men). Windows look out onto Soldiers Memorial and urban parks, with half the place being used as a massive bar area that includes a fireplace and couches. The menu is all about comfort food, with an emphasis on St. Louis favorites. Since comfort food is anchored in our childhood, St. Louis diners should find solace in things like The Hill house salad, Pulled Pork, Toasted Ravioli, Mostaccioli and grilled Pork Steak. The decor, too, has a St. Louis theme—a montage of black-and-white photos adorns the dining room, and a few patio tables sit outdoors in front of Soldiers Memorial and in the shadow of the St. Louis library. Chef Eric Brenner, formerly of Moxy in the CWE,

brings his own twist to the table, including offering many gluten-free or vegan items. Our chili starter ($5.50), for instance, was both, and it tasted incredibly meaty. Thick and chunky despite the dearth of beef, it had a topping of vegan cheese (regular available) and crunchy taco chips. Shrimp & Grits ($10) was another winner. Perhaps a nod to our somewhat Southern heritage (or our Mardi Gras ties), this classic pairing had a good number of shrimp sitting in a thin, chunky house-made barbecue sauce with jalapeno peppers, diced bell peppers and roasted corn kernels. The grits were dense and flavored with gouda cheese. The Caesar with Calamari Croutons ($7) was a good variation of the classy romaine salad with parmesan shavings. Brenner’s version was considerably less gentrified, with bits of provel, grape tomatoes (unheard of in the traditional version) and super-crunchy fried calamari.

FAVORITE ST. LOUIS RESTAURANT |

Our Italian Veggie Pizza ($12) had fried eggplant and zucchini slices on top of mozzarella cheese, but I could have sworn I detected a little provel in there. The thickly breaded eggplant was plentiful in every bite. The Roast Chicken ($17), a breast and wing, had the telltale brown finish and rich taste of bacon fat, which also permeated the accompanying mushroom polenta. Haricots verts came along for the ride, in a futile attempt to temper all that fat. A special of Seared Scallops with Gnocchi ($17) was quite good, the scallops halved for more surface to brown. The gnocchi were a little chewier than I like, but the lemon wine sauce was quite good, as were the buttered spears of broccolini. Desserts followed the comfort food theme with offerings like Blueberry Gooey Butter Cake and Peanut Butter Frozen Custard ($5.50 each). A noble effort but the ones we tasted weren’t as successful as the savory dishes.

make me laugh? Yes. And sometimes, that’s all you want from a movie anyway. As a fan of the series’ creative first installment and a critic of its outrageous second, I hesitated before subjecting myself to what I expected to be an hour and a half of crude sight gags. Rather than try to outdo its prequels, though, this film ties up loose ends, revisits favorite characters and offers viewers one more glimpse of Vegas nightlife. There is plenty of cursing, and some unpleasant (fake) animal cruelty, but at times the movie is almost sweet. Overall, it’s a fitting send-off for the Wolf Pack. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? If you enjoyed its predecessors, you might as well. —R.K.

in a small NYC apartment, invited by a mysterious guest who never appears. One year later, they are The Four Horsemen, one of the most popular acts in Las Vegas—and the only one that magically robs a French bank live on stage. Full of twists and turns, this film can’t decide quite what it is. There’s magic, deception, car chases, detectives and a brief foray into ancient Egyptian mysticism. The writers even attempt to jam in a romance, too. The magicians frequently remind their audience that misdirection is the real magic, but there’s almost too much of it in Now You See Me, leaving some key questions unresolved. Still, it’s a fun movie with a great cast and worth a try, especially if, growing up, you were the kid who always wanted someone to ‘pick a card, any card.’ SHOULD YOU SEE IT? It’s a fun, plot-twisting ride, and any film featuring Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman in a tête-à-tête over scotch is worth the price of admission. —C.K.

COVER STORY

LAKEFRONT] PARADISE

by tony di martino

IT’S BROILING HOT AND THE HUMIDITY IS STIFLING. You’re mired in rush-hour traffic. The AC is blowing hot air, and so is the jerk in the next lane who just cut you off. As the sun glares off the windshield, you find yourself daydreaming about acres of leafy green woods surrounding a cool, welcoming lake where you could relax, swim, boat and ski with family and friends ... If you had your very own lakefront retreat, this wouldn’t be a dream—and you’d be on your way home. This particular home is a magnificent, Swiss chalet-style country estate, just 15 minutes north of Alton, Ill. The estate, situated on a 22-acre private lake, is on the market for $2.1 million. “It’s like living at a fabulous resort, all year long,” says Jeff Roberts, who developed the property with his wife, Sandra. The 9,000-square-foot, custom-designed main house, completed in 2005, has five bedrooms and seven baths. The estate also includes a 1,200-square-foot, two-bedroom guest house with its own kitchen and beach, plus a 1,400-square-foot boathouse with three slips. The one-and-a-half story, stone and cedar structure, designed by architect Jeannie Brendel, features a level of Old World craftsmanship that’s hard to find these days. “You have to see it to believe it,” Roberts says. Features include custom hardwood cabinetry and cherry, oak, walnut and hickory millwork and flooring. Post-and-beam construction offers majestic open spaces in the main living area, where the brushed cypress ceiling soars to 35 feet. High-end finishes include granite and limestone countertops and travertine, slate and ceramic floor tile. Only two other houses share the 80-acre tract of land, and a 2,000-foot driveway shields the property from

passersby. The house works equally well as a residence, vacation getaway or corporate retreat, catering to every need with two full kitchens, both featuring Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, and two master suites. There’s also a library, home theater, kids’ playroom, and office space above the four-car garage. “If THE CEILING IN THE MAIN LIVING AREA SOARS TO 35 FEET. you want to catch the sunrise after a night of partying, the sunroom walks out to a wraparound deck overlooking the grounds and lake,” Roberts says. Other features include a game room, a safe room and generously sized walk-in closets. The entire estate was envisioned by a sportsman and designed with family fun in mind. The lake is fully stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill and crappie, and offers water skiers world-record capability slalom and jump courses. The 2,000-square-foot dock accommodates more than 60 guests. “Most estates this size are kind of hoity-toity, but guests always rave about how cozy and comfortable this place is,” Roberts says. “It’s perfect for toasting marshmallows and playing charades, but you could just as easily host a charity gala. It’s everything you could possibly desire in a getaway—and you don’t have to leave town.”

[HOMEWORK: DEAR HOMEWORK READERS, Occasionally we’ve received feedback that readers would like ideas about how to improve their homes in less expensive ways—or at least do it incrementally, which makes home improvement more affordable. So we’ve come up with a new idea for an expanded Homework column once a month, in which I will break down a home project into stages. For my first Homework: Extra Credit, I have chosen a previous submittal that explains how phasing a project influences results and costs. The subject home, photographed in the dead of winter, required both an architectural and landscape response to remedy its almost total lack of curb appeal. It was also a ‘typical suburban house,’ making it a good subject for introducing this new column. BEFORE

IN PHASE I, you see the most budget-conscious approach to the home’s issues. The garage door has been replaced, and the front door painted red. The flower boxes have been added and are brimming with luxuriant plants. A large urn with hibiscus helps draw attention to the front door and minimizes the barren feel of the original photo. All these improvements involve simple, off-the-shelf products and little labor, yet the effect is considerable. The house now feels much more inviting and loved. (Yes, I know I cheated a bit by re-drawing the home in summer. So I’ll point out that, in the Midwest, it’s important to have a solid showing of evergreens for winter landscape interest.)

REAL ESTATE

IN THE PHASE II DRAWING, you’ll notice big changes to the landscape. An evergreen hedge has created the feel of a courtyard and blocked the boring, vinyl-sided mass of the house next door. A carefully clipped 30-inch tall hedge near the house adds a layer of architectural detail. Curving flower beds add color and interest, and they help draw the eye away from the expanse of asphalt. A modest double line of cobblestone at the driveway’s edge adds some needed texture where it will be most visible. At this point, the property truly has been transformed, and many would logically stop their remodeling efforts with that.

PHASE III shows a final level of architectural elaboration. Brick light piers, more elaborate window and door casings, a wider front porch, and extensive use of cobblestone paving all work to give the home a feeling of opulence. If you lived in an up-market neighborhood, these initiatives might be perfectly logical rather than ‘gilding the lily.’ Sometimes, I do get a bit carried away, but it is usually from an irresistible desire to banish ugliness.

TOWN& NEIGHBORHOOD GLENDALE | THE ULLERYS by catherine klene THIRTEEN YEARS AGO, DR. BRIAN AND JENIFER ULLERY fell in love with the idyllic neighborhoods of Glendale, nestled among Rock Hill, Kirkwood and Webster Groves. Now, Jenifer can’t say enough about the tight-knit community, particularly how perfect it is for their four children: Jack, 11, Callie, 8, Carter, 5, and Anna, 5.

Q. WHY DID YOU MOVE TO GLENDALE? A. We asked a realtor to show us around, and we primarily looked in Webster Groves and Kirkwood. But

the home we fell in love with was in Glendale, right between the two. After our second kid, we needed more space, but we weren’t willing to leave Glendale. We spent a lot of time waiting and looking until we had the opportunity to build a new home.

Q. GLENDALE IS NOT AS WELL KNOWN AS LARGER ST. LOUIS COMMUNITIES. WHAT SURPRISES PEOPLE MOST? A. How friendly it is. We get to use all of Kirkwood’s facilities, but it’s not Kirkwood. It really feels like its own special place. The biggest tribute to that is the people who live here. When they outgrow their houses, they don’t move, they wait it out to find a way to stay in Glendale. Q. WHAT ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN’S SCHOOL? A. We have had the most positive, wonderful experience at North Glendale. The principal lets my little ones

come up and play during the day. Once we played kickball with our fifth-grade son at recess. They said to just come on over. North Glendale can fit anyone’s needs. Kirkwood is a wonderful school district; I would recommend it to everyone.

fine furnishings

Q. WHAT MAKES GLENDALE SO GREAT FOR KIDS? A. No matter what, as long as the sun is out, we make our way to the elementary school. It’s just a school

playground, but it becomes a social hour as well. It’s almost guaranteed they will know someone up there to play with, and I’ll know people I can socialize with.

Q. GLENDALE IS MOSTLY RESIDENTIAL. WHAT SHOPS ARE AVAILABLE? A. We love Hanneke’s Westwood Grocery & Catering, which just celebrated its 100-year anniversary. I can

send my 11-year-old with no money, but since you can have an account, he can get a snack and walk home. When you walk in the door, a woman will pull your slip out and write it down for you to pay at the end of the month. You will always see kids sitting outside.

Q. IS THERE A HIDDEN GEM IN GLENDALE? A. The hidden gem is the town itself. Our city hall does such a good job of engaging the community. We have

three events per year, and the whole city comes out. I don’t know if other people go to all their city events, but here, you walk to city hall, and it’s relaxed and fun.
