[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] In today’s Parenting feature, our columnist compares his idyllic youth to that of today’s over-programmed, hyper pluggedin kids. While I agree that 21st century children are indeed missing out on imaginative, self-directed free play, I respectfully say the comparison is unfair. The new reality in child-rearing is more about how different the world is now than about misguided parenting. Like Dr. Jordan, I remember lazy summer days spent building clubhouses at the corner playground and trolling alleys for frogs and grasshoppers. But if a mom today let her kids loose in the alley, the Department of Family Services probably would be at her door within hours. (That’s if she even knows what an alley is.) Life and lifestyles are very different now. For one thing, there’s ‘stranger danger,’ a euphemism for pedophiles. If they were around in the ‘50s, no one talked about it, let alone heard about it 24/7, scaring the @#*! out of any parent considering a run-of-the-neighborhood kind of summer. Then there’s a little thing called the working mom. My mother didn’t work outside the home, and I’ll bet Dr. Jordan’s didn’t either. They could keep tabs on us during our various imaginary adventures, even if it was loose tabs. I’ve watched moms today try to juggle children’s appointments and school schedules with careers, and I can report it’s hard enough without adding the wild card of ‘free play’ into the mix. Only kids whose moms stay home can afford not to program their children with activities. And if they’re counting on other children in the neighborhood to be around to help build those forts and clubhouses, well, good luck. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

No, this phrase wasn’t cooked up by local meteorologists to describe St. Louis summers. It actually goes back to the ancient Romans, who referred to the brutally hot days of July and August as dies caniculares. The ancients noticed that the hottest days of the year coincided with the appearance of the star Sirius, part of the dog-shaped Canis Major constellation, in July and August. The Romans blamed this bright star for adding to the heat of the day. Guess those togas weren’t as cool and breezy as they looked.

THE HOURS ARE LONG AND FULL OF FEAR for a seriously ill child, especially those receiving treatment far from home. Pain seems worse when you’re in unfamiliar surroundings. Doctors and nurses mean well, but there’s no substitute for a mother’s soft hand or a father’s reassuring hug. Since 1981, Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis has offered a home away from home for more than 30,000 families of seriously ill children who come to town seeking medical care. “RMHC provides shelter, meals and other comforts to families of kids who need critical care,” says communications coordinator Katie Nepute. “With basic needs taken care of, moms and dads can focus on making sure their children heal.” Three houses—one on Park Avenue, one on West Pine and one on the campus of Mercy Children’s Hospital—serve nearly 2,000 families a year from all over the globe. RMHC also offers eight extended-stay apartments, used primarily by families of young transplant patients, and family rooms at Mercy, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “The rooms, which include snacks, showers, laundry facilities and other amenities, are an oasis for about 6,000 local and out-of-town families each year,” Nepute explains. Families who stay at a Ronald McDonald House pay no more than $5 a night. “Other houses across the country have had to raise the fee to $15 or $20, but, thanks to the success of our fundraising efforts, we’ve been able to keep our costs down,” Nepute says. The fee is waived for families who can’t afford it—and more than 40 percent of our families can’t, because of mounting medical bills or financial hardship,” she says. “The financial burden that comes with having a severely ill child is huge, especially when you have to move elsewhere to seek medical treatment.” To ease that burden, RMHC depends on community support. One of its major annual fundraisers, the Kids & THE COHNS ARE ONE OF 8,000 FAMILIES HELPED Clays Tournament and Dinner Auction, BY RONALD McDONALD HOUSE EACH YEAR. begins Aug. 16 with a dinner at Edward Jones Atrium, followed the next day by a sporting clays tournament at Strathalbyn Farms Club in Weldon Spring, Mo. The event is co-chaired by Brad Seabaugh, owner of Midwest Valve & Controls, and Phil Brown, broker/partner of United Country Trophy Properties and Auction. Moneta Group is the presenting sponsor. “Ronald McDonald House does so much for families,” Seabaugh says. “Being around loved ones is a huge emotional boost that helps kids heal better and faster. Kids & Clays introduces RMHC’s mission to a whole new audience, while raising more than $250,000 in additional revenue each year.” Having a welcoming refuge gives families one less thing to worry about during a stressful time, Nepute says. “Being surrounded by our caring volunteers, and by others who are going through the same thing, strengthens them for whatever the next day brings. The money raised through Kids & Clays provide a safe haven for families in need, every day of the year.”

TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.

Two tawdry tidbits herein, from Ballwin and Webster Groves, may serve as reminders that a knucklehead can lurk around any corner. But these perps were workers in places where the victims lived, which makes it especially creepy. In Ballwin, a cleaning woman pocketed some painkillers and cash, partially cleaning out the home she was supposed to be only cleaning. Meanwhile, in Webster, an employee of a senior-living facility walked into a resident’s room and lifted a wallet, later using the credit cards to make purchases. Attention, would-be criminals: Just because there isn’t a surveillance camera around doesn’t mean you should take someone else’s stuff. Keep your sticky mitts to yourself. They may pick up only lint, but that won’t lead to prison time. Remember: If you pick up enough lint, you may be able to knit yourself a sweater. When a driver crashed through the storefront, could it be that the Max Muscle owner managed to get out of the way because of an uncanny muscular ability to run faster and jump higher? Apparently not. Instead, it was good fortune. According to police, the owner was nearby, but very lucky, when a driver who mistook the accelerator for the brake smashed through the plate glass of the Brentwood sports nutrition business a few weeks ago. No one was injured. Mixed-use is the development buzz word of our times. In an urban environment, especially downtown rehabs, you’d be hard-pressed to find one that doesn’t include some such ‘hyphenation.’ That concept seems to thrive in suburbs, as well. With a shopper’s paradise in sight in the valley, a third big new development in Chesterfield Valley is on the drawing board, to include hotel accommodations and entertainment venues, along with

OF THE

other retail and restaurant options. Reportedly, Chesterfield Blue Valley developer Dean Wolfe expects to ink two contracts by the end of the month, with construction underway by fall. Wolfe is in the catbird seat, as they say: He owns 73 acres surrounding Premium Outlets, one of the two malls under construction and set to open next month, on Aug. 22. Taubman Prestige Outlets has announced an Aug. 2 opening. Shoppers, start your engines. For some businesses, the ‘company car’ employee perk is dying out. Through a subsidiary, Enterprise Rent-A-Car of Clayton has helped organizations save money via a novel approach to managing company fleets. Enterprise Fleet Management has received a 2013 American Business Award recognizing its approach, which in one case saved a municipality $300,000. Loveland, Colo., took advantage of Enterprise CarShare, an alternative to committing longterm to a vehicle. The city replaced about 40 aging sedans, pickups and vans with 15 shared vehicles leased from Enterprise Fleet Management. Vehicles in the pool may be reserved online for a few hours or a few days, and the system automatically charges the employee’s budget based on time and mileage. Enterprise was chosen for a bronze ‘Stevie’ award from among

LADUE

3,000 entries across various industries. Way to go! The competition was on an epic scale: Teams from two great Mississippi River cities shedding blood, sweat and a few tears to woo a panel of judges that included a few experts (and me). Student chefs from the campuses of our own L’Ecole Culinaire and the one in Memphis, Tenn., met last month at the Ladue campus for their firstever match to prepare complete meals in real time. Teams were presented ‘mystery baskets’ of ingredients from which to develop, prepare and present appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. I took the job seriously, although I admit dessert deliveries to the other table somewhat diverted my attention while I evaluated bodacious breads, crisp salads and entrees made of venison, pork, fish and shrimp. Into each mystery basket was introduced an out-of-left-field element, from Cheetos and Cherry Coke to British-style fruitcake which (gadzooks!) chefs managed to make edible. There was no Gordon Ramsey-style yelling; instead there was laughter, and one chef was even overheard singing. Timing wasn’t everything, but it was important. (Waiters can’t be kept waiting, you know.) Presentation was critical, as were temperature and

nutritional value. In most cases, the plated results looked too good to eat (who am I kidding?). And let’s hear it for the winners—Yay, home team! Oh, and since you asked: Cheetos enhanced the crunchy crust of an eggplant slice. Cherry Coke was used in a reduction (sauce). And the fruitcake became crispy croutons with a pomegranate glaze. Ladies and gentlemen, prepare your salivary glands. Mayhaps this festival-happy city’s happiest and most festive special event with the silliest name, Let Them Eat Art, returns to Maplewood from 6 to 11 p.m. this Friday (July 12). (You know goings-on around town have got it going on if they have a preparty. Which this one does, although registration closed Monday. Neener neener.) There will be belly dancing. There will be hoop dancing. There will be spontaneous dancing by people who cannot and should not dance. There will be music, art and food at Maplewood’s whimsical tribute to Bastille Day. Marie Antoinette was infamous for scoffing at the hungry in the streets with her “Let them eat cake.” Taking this legend to a new level, Maplewood will give away 1,000 cupcakes! More than 50 regional artists and artisans will display and demonstrate. Gene Dobbs Bradford Blues Experience and Gumbohead will play live. No after parties have been announced. Normandy School District, bordering St. Louis, has been described as ‘failing.’ While its fiscal woes are great, Normandy is also one of two county districts not accredited by the state, the other being Riverview Gardens. Normandy’s loss is St. Charles’ gain, for the time being… in class size, at least. It could not be said that Francis Howell School District made the decision with much enthusiasm. But a long-pending issue of student transfers from substandard districts was upheld recently by the

Missouri Supreme Court, so Francis Howell has opened its doors to an as-yet-undetermined number of kids who would be bused there from Normandy, at the latter’s expense. St. Charles administrators say there’s room, although how much will be needed remains to be seen. Families have until Aug. 1 to make their desires known. They would have to pay for their kids to be bused elsewhere—including Clayton, Webster Groves and Parkway, all of which are waiting for the other shoe to drop. The timing of this year’s PrideFest was propitious. Gay couples could celebrate a week highlighted by the U.S. Supreme Court’s nullification of measures that have blocked same-sex marriage. (Soberingly, the SCOTUS decision came a day after the 40th anniversary of a deadly arson in a New Orleans gay nightclub that claimed the lives of more than three dozen men and women.) Growing like Topsy, the celebration was moved downtown this year from the Tower Groves neighborhoods of south St. Louis. Despite a few sprinkles here and there (OK, gusts and Woodstock-style torrents), PrideFest was a huge hit. Food, music, art, wares, circus-style performances and a zillion hugs marked the celebration. Parents came with their kids, some with good friends / former spouses who’d later come to realize they were gay. Booths hawked wares ranging from fine art to rainbow collars for dogs. And Tumara Mahorning, the 2013 PrideFest queen, visited with as many of ‘her’ subjects as was humanly possible, considering heat, humidity, the rainbow ball gown and a very tall tiara. Staffers at the booth for the new St. Louis chapter of Even Chance, a San Diego-based pit-bull advocacy and rescue group, were delighted to have a picture with the queen and a court member, a man wearing short shorts and elaborate plumage fashioned from multi-colored balloons. And was the parade loud, colorful and absolutely outrageous? Is a flamingo pink? Rap-Country. It may sound like an impossible musical paradox, but this unlikely pairing of two diverse styles has now worked twice, at least, speaking purely from chart success. (Caveat: Lovers of opera, string quartets or show tunes may find either, or both, styles to be an auditory assault worthy of time in prison.) Perhaps the first success of the hybrid was represented by country hunk Jason Aldean’s 2011 hit Dirt Road Anthem, whose remix featured rapper Ludacris. Now comes a cameo by U. City fave Nelly, enhancing the minor hit Cruise, by country act Florida Georgia Line, to take the song over the top, chart-wise. Nelly appeared last month with the country group on the results episode of The Voice to demonstrate just how it’s done. Maybe it’s the drawl, y’all.

The vessel, valued at $2 million, includes a master bath “larger than those in some houses.” The couple divides time between Aspen, Annapolis, Ft. Lauderdale and St. Louis. ] Central West End attorney JERRY SCHLICHTER got some nice ink in The New York Times last month. Thanks to his lawsuits against companies with excessive 401(k) fees, Schlichter is credited with lowering the costs of some retirement plans. The Times points out businesses have a legal duty “to look after their employees’ interest in overseeing the accounts.” Schlichter is also one of the founders of the local start-up business plan competition called Arch Grants. ] [ The Wall Street Journal reports the entire booze industry is watching the legal battle between St. Louis’ family-owned wholesaler MAJOR BRANDS and the world’s largest liquor makers. The liquor giants don’t like the Prohibition-era laws that make it difficult for them to switch distributors. Sue McCollum, who now heads up Major Brands after the death last year of her husband, Todd Epsten, is fighting to preserve the status quo. ] [ A plaque honoring longtime Shaw Park pool manager WALLY LUNDT has been installed next to the facility’s high diving boards. Lundt started at the pool in 1952 and coached swimming at Clayton High School from 1952 until 2011. Lundt once kicked Andy Cohen off the Clayton polo team for talking too much. Of course, Cohen, now a host and exec with Bravo, is the author of the memoir, Most Talkative. ]

ABOUT THE CLUB Tired of bunco but still hoping to socialize, a group of neighborhood friends founded the Have A Life book club, whose name is also its philosophy. “We didn’t want it to be all about reading books, where, if you didn’t read, you’d be chastised,” member Kim McGuinness says. “We tried to give it some flexibility. If you couldn’t read it because other things got in the way, that’s OK.” The group meets every six to eight weeks at a member’s home, where the hostess leads the discussion. They’ve had the opportunity to speak with author Chris Bohjalian about his works, and are featured in the book club review section of his novel Secrets of Eden. ABOUT THE BOOK Secrets stemming from the accidental death of a child threaten to tear apart a family in Those We Love Most, a novel by Lee Woodruff.

[ opinions ]

>> I actually disliked the book because in today’s society it almost gives people permission to revel in

their grief if bad things happen and not take full responsibility for the actions that caused the grief in the first place. - LAURA LUCAS >> As each member dealt with grief, different stories surfaced about their personal struggles. In the end, I thought it was an excellent story about the tenacity of family. - DEB BOLAND >> I did not like the book. I felt that too many of the characters were whiny and weak … a little selfish in only acting out their own desires/needs without thought to others … I needed a strong character to pull all the others together, and there wasn’t one. - JILL LAARMAN >> In general I liked the book because of the way the author so poignantly described the feelings of the characters. I also liked the redemption portion of the book—where the mom of the boy killed forgives the boy who hit her son. It was a beautiful message of forgiveness and understanding pain from another’s perspective. - JANELLE WORLEY >> It wasn’t really my favorite, mostly because the characters seemed very dysfunctional and there wasn’t much resolution to their lives at the end. - LINDA DAWSONV

I D❤! LAUREN SWORDS & TIMOTHY O’TOOLE] by rebecca koenig | photos by jess and nate studios

LAUREN SWORDS WASN’T SURE ABOUT AN OFFICE ROMANCE, but the accountant eventually agreed to a golfing date with Timothy O’Toole, the sous chef at the Michigan country club where she works. During a golf trip one year later, the couple became engaged, and they wed Sept. 8, 2012. Tim, a DeSmet Jesuit High School graduate who previously worked at St. Albans Country Club, proposed while he and Lauren were watching Independence Day fireworks from a balcony. The wedding festivities began with a barbecue Thursday night for friends and family arriving in Detroit. On Friday, Tim and his buddies went golfing, while Lauren and the ladies had their nails done. The Simone Vitale Band entertained guests with Motown music during the rehearsal dinner at The Townsend Hotel, and convinced Tim to take the mic and sing ‘My Girl’ to his fiancee. “They made Tim serenade me; it was a great night,” Lauren says. Nine nieces and nephews served as flower girls and ring bearers during the ceremony at Holy Name Catholic Church, which concluded with a bagpipe rendition of ‘When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.’ The Irish theme continued during the reception at the nearly century-old Westin Book Cadillac hotel, where guests drank Mead for an Irish wedding toast. On Sunday guests attended the St. Louis Rams-Detroit Lions opening day game.

SHE SAID

JULY 10, 2013

more info: DowntownKirkwood.com

near Ole Miss brought Mackenzie Chapel and Weston Bert together in 2011, when Mackenzie was a sophomore and Weston a graduate student, so it was only natural that Weston propose there April 12. The University of Mississippi alums will wed in June 2014 in St. Louis. Although a few years apart in age, Marquette grad Mackenzie says she and Weston had no trouble communicating after he asked her out. “I have three older brothers and he has three younger sisters,” she explains. “We knew how to deal with each other. He’s very sweet, he understands girls. He was easy to talk to, very charming, and he puts a lot of thought into things he does.” The pair had discussed marriage, but the proposal was a surprise, since Mackenzie didn’t even expect Weston, who now works for Ernst & Young in Dallas, to be in town. After she said yes, they toasted with Champagne at a bedand-breakfast, where Mackenzie’s brothers were waiting to congratulate them. The wedding ceremony will take place at the Shrine of St. Joseph, which Mackenzie’s great-aunt helped preserve. Because Weston spent a summer living in the Central West End next to the Coronado Ballroom, they will hold the reception there. “We would always go and get breakfast there, we just love the inside of it,” Mackenzie says. Her bouquet will feature a special family token: her late greatgrandmother’s rosary, which was blessed at the Vatican.

ARE YOU ANNOYED because everyone around you keeps mumbling? Well, maybe it’s not them. Maybe it’s you. According to the National Institutes of Health, 17 percent of adults in the United States report some degree of hearing loss, and about 30 of every 1,000 school-age children suffer from hearing impairment. Contributing factors can include aging, noise exposure and nerve damage. “Almost everyone can be helped to some degree, either medically, surgically or with a hearing aid,” says Dave Harris, Ph.D., director of audiology at SLUCare, the physicians of Saint Louis University. “If your deficit is primarily caused by damage to the small sensory cells in the inner ear, a hearing aid can make a huge difference.” Yet only 1 out of every 5 people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wears one. “Some individuals think there’s a stigma involved, even though most devices are barely visible now,” Harris says. Others stop using their hearing aid because it doesn’t feel right or work correctly—a common complaint when consumers buy a device online or at a hearing aid store. “To get the best possible results, you need to be tested, evaluated and fitted by an audiologist,” he says. The goal of Harris and his team at SLUCare Otolaryngology Services, located at Mercy Medical Center and the SLUCare Doctors Office Building, is to help patients communicate successfully and comfortably. “We provide comprehensive diagnostic services and offer a wide range of hearing aids, custom-programmed for each patient’s type and degree of hearing loss,” he explains. Lifestyle is a key factor: “If you just want to hear the TV better, you don’t need an expensive device. But if your profession or hobby doesn’t leave your hands free to make frequent

volume adjustments, today’s technology can accommodate your needs.” SLUCare also provides extensive, free follow-up services. When a conventional hearing aid isn’t enough, surgical options are available. “Hearing aids can make sounds louder, but they can’t always help you tell words apart,” says Dr. Anthony Mikulec, chief of otology and neurotology at SLUCare. Significant word discrimination issues can be diagnosed by an audiologist and remedied by a cochlear implant, he adds. Patients with severe otosclerosis, abnormal bone growth in the middle ear, can benefit from a stapedotomy, in which the stapes bone is vaporized with a laser and replaced with a prosthesis. SLUCARE AUDIOLOGIST SARAH BORTON Bone-anchored hearing aids can help individuals who are deaf in one ear, or whose chronic ear drainage prevents the use of a hearing aid. Whatever option a patient chooses, the outcome is rewarding for patients and audiology team alike. “It’s thrilling to see the look on someone’s face when they can hear again after years of social isolation,” Harris says. “One woman heard her grandbaby’s voice for the very first time and literally burst into tears! She hadn’t realized what she’d been missing.”

Although they’re more common in kids, ear infections can cause pain and grief in adults, too. They can also cause hearing loss. >> dr. edward chen, FAMILY PHYSICIAN, MERCY CLINIC FAMILY MEDICINE

External ear infections occur in the ear canal and are often associated with swimming. Otitis externa, the medical term for an external ear infection, is also called ‘swimmer’s ear.’ Infections most often occur in people who swim in water where bacteria is present, such as in rivers, lakes and streams. They also can be acquired from the neighborhood pool. Cotton swabs play a significant role in external ear infections. Swabs and other items people stick in their ears can cause breaks in the protective lining of the ear canal, thereby allowing bacteria to invade. Excessive earwax can also cause water to collect, allowing bacteria to grow and an infection to take hold. To prevent an external ear infection, shake your head after swimming to get as much water out as possible. Dry your ears with a hair dryer held at a safe distance, or use over-the-counter ear drops formulated to dry trapped fluid and relieve water-clogged ears. And don’t stick anything in your ear—ever.

Middle and inner ear infections aren’t common in adults, but some people do get persistent infections, and they’re a cause for concern. Recurrent ear infections or chronic fluid can damage the nerves, erode the tiny bones in the ear and lead to hearing loss. As an allergist, I see two main issues that cause inner and middle ear infections in adults: rhinitis (nasal congestion) and primary immune deficiency (PID). Treatment is different for both groups. Recurring rhinitis can be caused by allergies or by sinus problems, including a sinus infection. We always pursue the underlying cause of rhinitis because it’s often a contributing factor to cochlear infections. Adults with PID are susceptible to ear infections and many other types of infections. Their immune system doesn’t function properly: it’s absent or impaired. We evaluate these patients first to determine what antibody they’re deficient in. If it’s immunoglobulin, we replenish it. But if they’re deficient in immunoglobulin B, we treat their infection and send them to an ear, nose and throat doctor for ear tube surgery to help prevent future ear infections.

[ s-i-n-u-s-i-t-i-s ] deviated septum: nasal detour //

No matter how you spell it, a sinus infection can leave you stuffy, achy and miserable. But antibiotics may not be what the doctor orders.

“The septum in the nose is like the medium dividing a two-way highway,” says DR. MIKE NAYAK OF NAYAK PLASTIC SURGERY. But instead of separating traffic, the septum—a thin piece of bony cartilage surrounded on either side by mucous membranes—divides the nasal cavity in half. And when the septum ‘deviates,’ it swerves like a road, creating congestion and blocking airflow. Nayak calls septoplasty, the surgery to correct a deviated septum, a remodel job. Through an incision inside the nostril, the surgeon peels away mucosa to view, reshape or remove the deviated cartilage. “Non-critical segments of the septum are removed so they no longer block the airway,” he says. “Critical segments, such as those that support the bridge and tip of the nose, are straightened to the best of our ability through scoring, suturing or crushing.” Although extensive work on critical segments can result in a straighter septum, it’s also associated with a higher risk for complications. “It’s a matter of how far you want to push it,” Nayak says. “We can’t straighten the septum 100 percent. We have to stop at what is safe, based on the physician’s judgment and clinical experience.”

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY To avoid a sinus infection, irrigate your nasal passages, increase your fluids and don’t smoke. The best way to monitor your hydration is by checking the color of your urine. It should be clear. If it is very yellow or dark, you are dehydrated. Beer, coffee and tea contain caffeine, which can dehydrate. Most sinus infections are viral—they won’t improve with antibiotics. There’s no quick test to differentiate between a viral or bacterial infection. If you suspect a sinus infection, initially treat symptoms with over-the-counter medications. Use a decongestant, a mucous-thinning agent and acetaminophen for pain relief. If problems persist or worsen beyond seven to 10 days, see a physician. All too often, patients demand unnecessary antibiotics. We conducted a research study of 166 people with acute sinus infections: 85 received an antibiotic and 81 received a sugar pill that looked like the antibiotic. They also received instructions for OTC medications. Patients were assessed on days three, seven, 10 and 28 after enrollment. We expected those on antibiotics to feel better faster. They didn’t. We found no difference in symptom relief or in other important outcomes, such as in duration of symptoms or missed work.

FOUNDER & OWNER, ST. LOUIS SINUS CENTER Sinus surgery is meant for people who have confirmed chronic sinusitis and have failed medication. There are two types of competing surgeries: functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), which is the traditional approach, and balloon sinus dilation, a newer treatment that is sometimes called balloon sinuplasty. The goal of either procedure is to restore ventilation of the sinuses by opening up blocked passages. Balloon sinus dilation uses tiny balloons that are inserted in the nose and sinuses. Once in position, the balloons are briefly inflated to expand the sinus pathways and then removed to restore natural drainage. The FESS technique uses an endoscope to visualize sinus openings and microsurgical instruments to cut and remove obstructive tissue. The balloon technique offers numerous advantages over FESS. It can be performed in an office setting rather than an outpatient surgery center. It’s quicker—15 to 30 minutes for an uncomplicated case versus two hours for FESS. There’s minimal downtime; patients can return to normal activities the next day. Balloon sinus dilation is less painful, costs less and is covered by Medicare and most major insurance companies. Relief can be immediate or occur within one week after surgery.

Tired of Sinus and Allergy Problems? Dr. Jim Gould of the St. Louis Sinus Center now offers an amazing new treatment known as XprESS Balloon Sinus Dilation. XprESS is a quick, minimally-invasive in-office procedure that reopens blocked sinuses, restoring natural sinus ventilation and drainage providing instant, life changing lasting relief.

[ voice & swallowing problems ] Ahem! Voice and swallowing problems can be minor inconveniences or symptoms of something serious. When in doubt, see a medical professional. >> dr. j. david dahm, OTOLARYNGOLOGIST,

ENT ASSOCIATES INC. St. Louis has lots of allergens that can impact a person’s voice. Allergens can thicken or produce extra mucous that drains into the voice box. People commonly react by coughing and frequent throat clearing, which can irritate the vocal chords and create hoarseness. Antihistamines and inhalers can worsen voice quality by irritating the vocal chords. An active, upper-respiratory infection and laryngeal-pharyngeal reflux (LPR) can also cause hoarseness. With LPR, stomach juices quietly back up into the throat and create inflammation, but not heartburn. LPR causes chronic throat clearing, coughing, post-nasal drip and a hoarse voice. How you treat hoarseness depends on what’s prompting it. Hydration is essential. Vocal chords need water, which also helps to thin mucous secretions. If LPR is suspected, diet and lifestyle changes are prescribed. Infections are treated with appropriate antibiotics. Persons with vocal nodules or with certain injuries may benefit from speech therapy. Fortunately, we don’t see many tumors. But if hoarseness persists after two weeks, see a voice expert who can see the vocal chords.

dr. richard barnes, OTOLARYNGOLOGIST, EARS, NOSE & THROAT PLASTIC SURGERY, INC. If you have trouble swallowing once or twice a year, there’s a good chance it’s not a medical issue. It might be an esophageal spasm or what you’re eating. But any trouble with swallowing on a regular basis needs to be evaluated. It may not be significant, or it could be the first symptom of a neurological condition, such as Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease, or an obstruction, like a tumor. A visit to an otolaryngologist or a gastroenterologist is a good place to start. Difficulty in swallowing, or dysphagia, is a sign that something is going on with your throat and/or your esophagus, and it usually involves the muscles. The muscles have to relax and contract to pass food from your mouth to your throat, and from the esophagus down to your stomach. If there’s a problem with the way the muscles work, their coordination or with the nerves that fire them, you will have dysphagia. Gastroesophageal reflux is also a cause of swallowing difficulties. Treatment depends on cause and may include swallowing exercises, diet change and having the esophagus stretched, which is often performed by a gastroenterologist. Traditionally, otolaryngologists treat ear, nose and throat problems down to the esophagus, but there’s an overlap between the two specialties.

“There’s no definitive answer to what causes tinnitus, or ringing in the ears,” says ROB NOBLE, AN AUDIOLOGIST AT ASSOCIATED HEARING PROFESSIONALS. “One theory is that it stems from damaged hair cells inside the cochlea (the receptor organ for hearing). Another theory suggests that the auditory cortex goes into overdrive, which increases your internal sensitivity to sound. You start picking up all different sorts of noise. It could be nerve static. It could be internal body-made noises.” There is no cure for tinnitus, but there are treatments to manage it. Tinnitus masking is one. It uses a hearing aid-sized device, inserted in one or both ears, that produces a ‘white noise’ to mask the offending sound. “It causes the brain to habituate or not pay attention to the sound,” says Noble, who has the condition. The device is worn during working hours. Sometimes the device is combined with tinnitus retraining therapy. “Therapy is successful for about 80 percent of the population, but it’s labor intensive and requires months of cognitive therapy sessions,” Noble says. “Cognitive therapy teaches the patient how to manage their reaction to the noise, so they don’t become upset.”

Breakthrough Treatment Now Available in Chesterfield Chesterfield, MO – Imagine thirty to forty years ago if you were told that lasers would replace scalpels in surgery or that robotic instruments would build cars; you may not have believed it. By the same token, would you believe that chiropractic treatments could be performed using a special hand-held instrument developed by NASA scientists; all while you were sitting in an upright position without any turning or twisting movements? Advances in computers and engineering technologies have been able to uniquely blend with chiropractic in order to both analyze and treat the human body in such a way that was never before realized. According to Drs. Strotheide & O’Leary, “This new form of computerized treatment is so gentle and effective, that it amazes even the most skeptical patients. It’s called the ProAdjuster and is the latest, state-ofthe-art technology in existence today, and the only one in the Chesterfield area.” The ProAdjuster can safely and gently analyze and treat the spine and other joints to remove the nerve impingement that is often the cause of pains in the low back, neck, shoulder and elsewhere in the body. It also works on a variety of muscular conditions to loosen tight muscles with ease and comfort. Many patients say that it’s like getting a mini-massage.

It can also help increase the amount of motion in almost any joint. Even patients with knee, hip and foot problems such as plantar fascitis are being helped. It is also covered by most insurance companies including medicare. Dr. Strotheide says that “The secret to the ProAdjuster lies in its advanced piezoelectric sensor that is able to detect the slightest amount of restriction in a joint and then deliver an extremely precise madjustment.” He says that “Even though traditional forms of adjusting also work, people are drawn to this new technique because of how gentle it is and does not involve any twisting, especially in the neck. Many people love getting adjusted with traditional manual techniques, all of which are safe and effective. But there are a large number of people who never get to experience the amazing benefits of chiropractic because they are scared to have their spines adjusted in that way.” Now, there is no longer a reason to be weary. The ProAjuster is perfect for anyone who has been thinking about going to a chiropractor, but hasn’t yet made that decision. Doctors Strotheide and O’Leary want everyone to be able to experience these same benefits and if you have any of

the following conditions, the ProAdjuster may be the answer you’ve been looking for: • Low back discomfort • Sciatic nerve pain • Neck and shoulder pain • TMJ dysfunction • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

• Headaches • Fibromyalgia • Planter Fascitis • Knee or hip pain • Scoliosis • Arthritis • Sports injuries

PARENT TRAP LAZY, HAZY DAYS

OF SUMMER

]

by dr. tim jordan MUCH HAS BEEN SAID about kids not being as self-guided as we would like these days. They’re used to organized sports, organized learning and organized play dates. Well, I often like to compare the kind of childhood my generation had to the kind we are giving our youth today. I remember running behind the milkman’s truck on blistery hot days, hoping he’d stop and cool us off. How? He’d throw us a huge chunk of ice used to cool the milk, and then use his ice-pick to chop some pieces for us to suck on. We would walk about four miles to a pond in the backyard of a wealthy widow, and she’d let us fish to our hearts’ desire. Or our posse would ride our bikes about five miles down a four-lane road to the Stix, Baer & Fuller parking lot to catch the Redbird Express bus to take us downtown to a Cardinals game. I recall so many afternoons playing army in the woods with our BB guns, pellet guns, cherry bombs and M-80 firecrackers. The only thing that could halt our fun was the threat of missing dinner. There were other afternoons when we’d ride our bikes to other neighborhoods to seek out teams for long games of baseball or hockey. We managed to negotiate who batted first and all the rule changes that occurred with each venue where we played, because we would have to work around fire hydrants, cars, trees, etc. We handled any disagreement or controversial plays without the benefit of an umpire (or parents!). And yes, there were occasional fights and arguments, but we worked it out ourselves. And that’s my point here. When I hear examples of kids’ summer schedules today, it’s a litany of one supervised activity after another, all orchestrated by adults. There is precious little downtime today for the kind of free play I experienced as a kid. And that type of recreation helped us become more independent and resilient, better problem solvers, and able to initiate and create to our hearts’ delight. We learned to take care of ourselves and our problems. The lack of this kind of experience is what I think is causing the tremendous increase in stress and anxiety in children and young adults. Eighteen-year-olds go off to college and have no clue how to navigate things like doing laundry, balancing a checkbook, finding classrooms or signing up for classes. They lack initiative and problem-solving skills because they are so used to turning to adults to think for them, decide for them, entertain them, and boost them up when they’re down. The summertime provides an opportunity to give kids the time to do it differently. Let them be responsible for their boredom and for creating their own fun. I say, get them outside and unplugged from electronics. Let them grow, stretch and bloom. DR. TIM JORDAN, IS A BEHAVIORAL PEDIATRICIAN WHO COUNSELS KIDS IN GRADE SCHOOL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL. Fight your skin’s latent rebellion with Veria ID’s Pitta Dosha Mild Mannered Cleanser. A natural way to treat acne-prone derma, the cleanser soothes skin and fights irritation with chamomile, comfrey and Boswellia. Pitta Dosha also has an anti-aging element, thanks to potent peptides. THE] STEPS THE CLASSIC CAT EYE

by marylyn simpson CLASSIC AND VERSATILE, the cat eye is one of the most recognizable ways to rock your eyeliner. Whether you prefer a tiny wisp at the corner of your lid or an Elizabeth Taylor-worthy cat eye, sometimes eyeliner application is easier said than done. Here are some basic steps for creating a perfect cat eye, no matter your level of expertise. PRIME TIME

Start with a blank canvas.

1> LAURA MERCIER EYE CANVAS is perfect for creating a neutral base that

will hold your shadows and liner in place throughout the day without the risk of creases or fading.

2> Add shadow as desired, although most primers double as neutral-tone shadows that allow your cat eye to pop.

3> Starting with a perfect winged-out edge is key in creating the look. I prefer black liquid eyeliner for a smudge-free, precise application.

4> Lightly pull your lid upward and apply a thin line of NARS EYELINER

STYLO LIQUID eyeliner at the middle of your lid, working your way outward.

5> Once you reach the edge of your eye, motion upward to create a cat eye effect. Keep the winged edge small; you can always add to your liner later.

LINE YOUR LID

Now that you have your cat eye base, it’s time to even out your liner.

1> Starting at the outer edge of the lid, re-line the entirety of your lid, both upper and lower.

2> Make sure your bottom liner meets your top liner. It makes it easier to create a complete cat eye, especially if you’re going for a more dramatic effect. The rules for a ‘perfect’ cat eye, however, vary by the individual, so you can make your line pencil thin or bright and bold.

No One Will Know. Everyone Will Notice.

DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA

Not quite satisfied with your kitten cat eye? Add more drama using the same Stylo pencil.

1> Starting where you originally created your cat eye, lightly pull your lid upward, but this time motion further up.

2> Don’t worry about staying close to your lash line, you can go as far up (or out) on the corner of your lid as you desire.

3> To best ensure cat-eye appeal, make sure your liner is in a straight, 25-degree angle, otherwise you run the risk of your liner looking sloppy and heavy.

Face, Breast & Body Surgical Procedures BOTOX Cosmetic, Facial Fillers, Fat Injections ®

Facial Lasers & Laser Hair Removal Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

Finish off your cat eye with a fresh coat of BOBBI BROWN’S LASH GLAMOUR EXTREME LENGTHENING MASCARA IN JET BLACK.

1> In a side-to-side upward motion, apply the mascara to the top and bottom of your eyelashes, repeating as desired.

2> Make sure to cover the edge of your lashes as well as the tips by dabbing the wand vertically on your hard-to-reach lashes.

3> No cat eye is complete without a generous coat of mascara, allowing your eyes to pop with endless length and dramatic depth.

WHEN THE PATTERING PAWS SITTERS ARRIVED at Abbey’s home, they found her in bad shape. The golden retriever had ingested a toxic dose of medication after one of her feline housemates knocked a pill bottle to the ground, and the sitters knew they didn’t have much time. “They recognized the problem, got the dog to a clinic and called the owners,” says Lynne Parriott, owner of Pattering Paws. “They saved Abbey’s life.” This kind of skilled, attentive caretaking is what distinguishes Pattering Paws, Parriott says. She began the business, which provides pet-walking, -sitting and -transportation services, while making a career change into real estate. She earned her license, but realized she enjoyed working with pets so much she turned to that instead. After assembling a team and receiving great reviews from her first few clients, business boomed. “Our business has really been built on relationships and word-of-mouth,” Parriott says. “We know the area, and we hire people who live nearby. We know our client base, and we care for them and care for their animals.” A company is only as good as its staff, Parriott says, and she swears by hers. “You have to trust your employees and the integrity of the people you hire,” she says. “We go to people’s homes; there has to be a sense of trust. We’re caring for the most important things in their lives. That is one of the most rewarding things: the honesty and the trust we have for the people we work for. It reinforces how great small business can be when you base it on good ethics.” Outside of work, many employees are committed to giving back to animal organizations and events, including Bark in the Park, which the company sponsors. Pattering Paws specializes in caring for creatures that need a little extra attention. Several employees have experience in the health care industry, and they put their expertise to good use. “They have that sense of compassion and have learned how to give medications and fluids to animals,” Parriott says. In case of emergencies, the company has built relationships with area vets. Elderly pets are also in good hands. “It’s recognizing that it may take 45 minutes for this dog to eat,” Parriott explains. “Kennels can’t do that, they can’t give you that special attention. I don’t think a lot of people in this day and age have the patience to really sit down and work with a living thing that cannot talk to you and tell you how they feel. My employees have that.” And because of that, Parriott says, “Abbey is back to her old self—and the cats are still naughty.”

With their flippers, tiny ears and irresistible whiskers, these are not your typical bathing beauties. But the sea lions at the Saint Louis Zoo know how to make a splash. Three times a day – four on the weekends – they jump through hoops, shimmy down slides and balance balls on their noses for the delight of zoo-goers. Sea lion shows have entertained St. Louis crowds since 1970. Of the 11 sea lions who currently call the zoo home, six are in show biz: Mandy, Dixi, Nikki, Rosie, Roby and Bennie. Significant training goes into preparing these pinnipeds for the spotlight. “They learn at different rates, and they have personality quirks,” say Kyle Ulmer, zoological manager of pinnipeds. “You have your A, B and C students.” The day begins with an early morning wake-up call and a fishy breakfast of capelin and herring. Trainers clean the habitat, then prepare their charges for the busy schedule of public feedings and performances, which show off sea lions’ natural behaviors. The marine mammals are fully aware they’re in front of an audience, Ulmer says, but shows don’t always go as planned. “Sometimes they’re great and do exactly what they’re supposed to, sometimes they won’t,” he says. “Trainers have to have a plan B or a plan C.” Because even the most seasoned stars occasionally need a break, the sea lions can bow out at any time. “They can leave the show pool and stage area and go inside where no one can see them,” Ulmer explains. “We don’t want the animal to be uncomfortable in front of the guests.” The human and animal partners rely on each other for safety and the success of the show, so the bond between them is tight. “The males are 500 pounds, they could hurt you if they wanted to,” Ulmer says. “Training’s all about trust. You form a very close relationship with your animal.” Directing a diva is a challenge. Directing a 15,000-pound diva is an accident waiting to happen. But Jenny Joyce knows just how to motivate Bud, the star of the Grant’s Farm elephant shows. “Bud won’t work unless he is getting some reaction from the crowd,” Joyce says. “He can be very charming because he knows that will get him food, too.” It takes a lot of food to keep an elephant happy, and a lot of coaching to prepare for three daily performances. Bud, an African elephant, eats 400 pounds of hay a day, plus grain and produce. Training him requires verbal commands, visual cues and a deep connection between creature and caretaker. “Everything about elephants is communication,” Joyce says. “You have to listen when they talk back. They can tell you when they don’t feel good. They can tell you when they’re in a good mood.” After enough repetition, Bud and his female co-star, Mickey, are ready to take the stage. “Once they know it, they know it,” Joyce says. “It’s true they never forget.” Showtime allows the big mammals to demonstrate what they do best. “Doing a trick is pulling a rabbit out of a hat,” Joyce says. “Our elephants do natural behaviors.” In particular, the performances highlight their signature multipurpose tool. “A trunk is what makes an elephant an elephant,” Joyce explains. Bud and Mickey use theirs to reach impressive heights, pick coins off the ground, blow up balloons, play the harmonica and, that perennial favorite, spray the audience with water. Joyce hopes guests leave with a heightened appreciation for the performing pachyderms. “We try to do as much guest interaction as we can,” she says. “At the same time they’re being entertained, they’re being educated. The elephant is an ambassador of its species.”

THE FAVORITES |

She-Crab Soup, Sunflower Seed Risotto, Black Hog Special

LONGTIME MONARCH CHEF Josh Galliano has let loose in this new Clayton restaurant, set in the old Chez Leon-Shiitake-Limoncello spot. A Southern boy, Galliano mixes his penchant for cornmeal breading and grits with a laser focus on local produce. And he’s not holding back in the creativity department, playing with textures (Crispy Pig Tales, Scorched Twisted Peppers, Sunflower Seed Risotto) and flavors (Fried Porgy with Tasso Gravy, Illinois Asparagus with Black Garlic Romesco). The menu has an interesting format, with columns for vegetables, meats and seafood, each listed from smallest serving to biggest. And even the non-vegetable columns include plenty of veggies. The Coffee-brined Pork Chops ($17), for example, include fingerling potatoes, appetizingly browned in oil, and roasted broccoli. The chops, thin fillet-like pieces, were quite good, juicy, lightly browned, and they benefitted from a nice pan jus deglazed with stout. Illinois Asparagus, at the top of the vegetable

column, is clearly a ‘small plate,’ but the dishes at the bottom, Pan Roasted Cauliflower and Sunflower Seed Risotto, are more like entrees. The risotto ($16) was delicious and original: instead of Arborio rice it used slow-cooked sunflower seeds mixed with a bit of creme fraiche and cumin. It was heavy on salt, but absolutely delicious, with an excellent nutty texture. Another innovative offering, Chilled Shrimp & Squid Cracklins ($13), is a fresh take on shrimp cocktail. The plate of four steamed shrimp came sprinkled with chip-like slivers of dehydrated squid, imparting intense flavor to the dish. Red threads of chili decorated the top, and a bright green (and very good) avocado puree was the base for it all. The best part was the squid; the rest was not particularly remarkable, although very pretty. A ‘Black Hog Special’ yielded some of the best pork I’ve had, ever, with sliced pork tenderloin rubbed with Moroccan aromatics and arranged over buttery quinoa. The just-butchered black hog, we

[ aftertaste ] >>We had very high expectations, especially considering the chef’s reputation, and perhaps it’s

unfair to expect perfection after one visit, and so soon after the restaurant opened. Ultimately, we were disappointed in the menu (limited options), the small portions, and the food itself. On a positive note, we had a very enthusiastic and attentive waiter, the bar was hopping and the ambience was good. —BETSY G. OF KIRKWOOD

were informed, had been procured from a local farm and was apparently quite a coup. Menu offerings like Ash Roasted Carrots, Scorched Twisted Peppers and Illinois Asparagus came with tantalizing touches like Marcona almond and pepper salsa or pea cavatelli and miso-carrot puree. We ordered the asparagus ($9), which had crisp spears topped with long asparagus shavings, dehydrated hard-boiled egg yolk, caviar, fried potato balls and black garlic romesco. Galliano is clearly having fun with food, experimenting and strutting his stuff. Several of the dishes had elements that fall into the experimental ‘molecular gastronomy’ food movement. The former Monarch chef (who was once featured in Southern Living and holds a master’s degree in Poli Sci) has the chops to pull it off—but will diners take to it? In the case of the She-Crab Soup ($7), the answer is a resounding yes. The bowl of chowder-like soup has intense flavor heightened by a dusting of ‘Marash’ chile—do not miss it. I say, diners, lean in and expand your culinary horizon.

Playing at duplicate bridge (match points), declarers are always looking for the magic extra trick, especially at no-trump. The bidding on this deal was straightforward: W N E S 1♦ pass 1nt pass 3nt pass pass pass Opening lead:♠6 The hand:

Considering Dental Implants?

NORTH ♠ KJ5 ♥ A K ♦ Q J 1 0 8 7 6 ♣ AJ

WEST EAST ♠ 1 0 8 7 6 4 ♠ Q 9 3 ♥ 1 0 8 3 ♥ Q J 6 5 ♦ 5 2 ♦ A K 9 3 ♣ K 6 5 ♣ 7 4 SOUTH ♠ A2 ♥ 9742 ♦4 ♣ Q109832 Did you fall in the match-point trap at trick one? If you played the greedy ♠ Jack hoping for an extra trick, down you go! The correct play is the ♠ King, saving the ♠ Ace as an entry to your ♣s. At trick two, play the ♣ Ace, then the ♣ Jack, overtaking with the Queen. Defender can hold up the King, but continual ♣ plays bring the suit up with one loser. Two ♠s, two ♥s, five ♣s, nine tricks. If you played the ♠ Jack at trick one East covers with the Queen; and when you play

on ♣s, West holds up the King and only two tricks are available. When West wins the ♣ King and switches to a ♥, the defense comes to two ♥s, two ♦s, and 1♣. Don’t play for extra tricks when that play puts your contract in jeopardy. There will be better chances to make the illusive ‘up-trick’ during the game.

tip of the day]

Q. In duplicate, the extra “up-trick” seems to make all the difference in our total score. How do we know when to play for the extra trick? A. The rule of thumb is play for the extra trick but don’t jeopardize your contract.

There’s one key reason to replace a missing tooth with a dental implant... they prevent the bone loss that triggers a series of unhealthy, age-accelerating events. When a tooth is missing and isn’t replaced, the jawbone supporting that tooth has no purpose and will begin to shrink. What follows is: • the teeth begin to shift; • chewing is shifted to other teeth, causing them to wear faster; • 20% of adjacent teeth will be lost within 4 to 8 years; and • the bone shrinks, leading to a collapsing facial appearance.

Getting a dental implant is a big decision. Implants are the modern solution to tooth replacement and no other option will preserve the jawline and maintain your facial structure. Call us today for a complimentary consultation with Dr. peter pagano.

cop meets uptight FBI agent and they become best buds—but only after they learn from each other. Well, mostly Sandra Bullock (the agent) learns from Melissa McCarthy, a crude, bossy loose cannon (but a good cop). The story is not at all memorable—I can barely recall the plot and I saw it only two days ago— but I had a lot of fun watching it. There is something about McCarthy’s in-your-face humor that is appealing and very, very funny. Maybe it’s because we’re not used to seeing such atypical (overweight, slovenly, foul-mouthed) heroines? This is basically the same character she played in Bridesmaids, but taken a little further. She’s unapologetic (and not the least bit self-conscious) about appearing onscreen as loud, crude, unattractive and slutty. Good for her SHOULD YOU SEE IT? PRUDENTIAL [SELECTPROPERTIES

by tony di martino

MARYANN VITALE ALLES AND GARY LOMBARDO

WHEN CHANGE OCCURS AT AN ESTABLISHED BUSINESS, companies need to be nimble enough—and successful enough—to flow seamlessly from one stage to the next.

All of which bodes well for Prudential Select Properties, which last week welcomed a new CEO and president. Taking the reins is Maryann Vitale Alles, a founding owner and seasoned real estate pro. She replaces longtime colleague George Bruns, the firm’s CEO/president for the last five years. Also stepping up is former VP of strategic development Gary Lombardo, who now serves as chief operating officer. “I worked with George Bruns for 25 years, and he will continue with the firm as a consultant,” says Vitale Alles, who has been in the real estate business for more than 30 years and ran one of the most successful branches of Prudential Select. “With help from our staff, we built the firm into the success it is today, and we’re confident we’re moving in the right direction.” Vitale Alles was the obvious choice to Bruns and to her partners, Deb Colburn and Angie Ignatowski. “Maryann is passionate about the industry, her company and her agents,” Bruns says. “She’ll bring a new level of energy and enthusiasm to the company as we continue to grow.” Lombardo, who introduced an innovative long-term plan for company growth last year, will be in charge of home office support services, including marketing, IT,

training and relocation. He’ll also lead the firm’s affiliated mortgage, title and home warranty services. “What makes this such a great place to work is the courage and vision of our leadership team and the commitment of our agents and employees,” he says. “When the market was tough, we kept growing by investing in talent, infrastructure, technology and training. That’s why we came out of the crash as one of the leading firms in town.” Established in 2002, Prudential Select is one of the largest female-owned businesses in the region, with 10 offices and 500 agents in the metropolitan area. It has been ranked among the top 50 brokers in the national Prudential Network for the last 11 years, and is among the top 20 percent of real estate firms nationwide. Locally, it’s ranked No. 2 in transactions by the St. Louis Association of Realtors. The company, which focuses on real estate in St. Louis City and County, St. Charles, and Jefferson and Lincoln counties, recently acquired the real estate side of Upper End Properties and merged with Upper End Leasing & Property Management. “Moving forward, we want to encourage a structure in which employees can focus on their goals while remaining open to new sales opportunities,” Lombardo says. “Together, we’ll create an environment where they can grow professionally and financially.” Vitale Alles knows where the firm is headed: “There’s no better way to grow and prosper than by offering our clients the very best properties and service.”

T&S | Tell me about designing your home. RP | The house is 12 years old. It was a remaining lot on acres that had never been built on. I thought it had potential. Now I can’t believe it sat as long as it did. We went to an architect and saw an artist’s rendering of this house. It was designed for a ballplayer here in town who never built it. It was done in stone instead of brick, and was double the size of ours. I was fascinated with the front, and I took it from there. I think it’s been copied about four times in Clayton and Town & Country. I love the architecture of the house in front, the stone turret, and the many arches inside. T&S | What was your decorating process? RP | I just added piece by piece. Someone gave me the advice to live in it before you buy your pieces or you’ll regret what you bought. I tend to be a fly-by-night purchaser, so it was really good advice. I like to find things I just don’t see at every store; I could be out of town, at a flea market, or at T.J. Maxx. I like different textures in the house. There’s an imported marble floor all the way through the house on the main floor. I like a little leather added, again for the textures. The walls in my bathroom are done with tissue paper, paste and paint. I like anything distressed and a comfortable feel. Everything was custom-painted because I wanted everything to look old.

OPPOSITE: The peaked rooflines are a favorite of homeowner Robin Parkin. THIS PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The Parkin family crest etched in glass; the masculine bedroom retreat; interior arches in the foyer; Parkin under the arbor; lions decorate the living room

T&S | You seem to have incorporated several medieval touches, including cherubs and coats of arms, such as the one etched in glass on the front door. RP | That is the family crest. My old house was nothing but pastels right out of a Florida home, all teals and mint greens and pinks. My grandparents are from the island of Malta, and I wanted something with a Mediterranean feel. So here my colors are very Tuscan-oriented. The kitchen is plastered and stuccoed, which I love. The tapestry does not match the door identically, but I do have a lot of lions and paws on the furniture. I have a lot of religious pieces; I love to find one-of-akind pieces, but I like a little history behind things, as well. The cherubs—I got those from Mary Tuttle’s. I thought, I want them on my wall. T&S | It looks like there are some more masculine details in the bedroom and the study. RP | I wanted a hair hide in there. It’s a masculine room, we call it Pat’s smoking room. We joke that if someone came to pick up my daughter, that’s where he would sit. I wanted something with wainscoting and bedroom walls that look like leather. T&S | You’ve put a lot of thought into your outdoor spaces, from the fireplace to the ornamental flower pots. RP | I love my naked men out there! I just think they belong on my patio. It’s a wonderful house for entertaining, a totally private backyard, and I’m the deer whisperer of West County. There’s inlaid brick on the patio, wood on the deck, and a lot of textures throughout the house. T&S | What do you like best about the house? RP | It looks very grand from the outside because of the peaks, but it’s a very comfortable, lived-in home. You don’t feel like you can’t touch anything. I’m always barefoot in the house. T&S | Do you have a favorite piece? RP | One of my favorites is the painting I got at an auction when my son was at De Smet. It came out of a church. When I’m drawn to something I kind of have to have it. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: ‘Naked men’ guard the patio; the high-ceilinged hearth room; a cowhide rug adds warmth to the study; wall cherubs keep Bocelli company in the dining room

HOMEWORK] DEAR HOMEWORK, My husband and I have never liked our front porch. We were wondering if Craftsman-style pillars would fit with our ranch-style home? What do you suggest? ———FLUMMOXED IN FRONTENAC

DEAR FLUMMOXED IN FRONTENAC, I agree that your front porch has problems. To me, it is too small to carry the day, as far as the overall composition is concerned. It also seems oddly detailed given the AFTER Colonial feel of the house. I also think your suggestion of sending the house in a Craftsman direction is brilliant. This will allow us to work with the home’s horizontal proclivity rather than against it, as Colonial styling does. I would recommend adding a much wider front porch, which will take in the boxed windows on either side of the front door. This new width is better proportioned for the length of the elevation, and its Craftsman detailing completely changes the feel of the residence. New shutters and window boxes are all that are left for a complete design about-face. I pass your house often and know that it is on a busy road. Therefore I would also like to suggest an informal hedge and row of maples near the street. This will both frame the new elevation nicely and block the view of cars from inside the house. You have good design instincts, so have fun putting them to use. ——— HOMEWORK

JULY 10, 2013

ANNE DUNAJCIK WAS A TOP SALESPERSON AND TRAINER at Southwestern Bell (now AT&T), but quit when she was pregnant with her first child. “At first I sold a little real estate on the side while raising our three kids,” she recalls. “But business kept coming at me, and I went full time pretty darn quick.” Consistently ranked one of the top 25 realtors in town, her clients have included Alfred Pujols and Carlos Beltran. Dunajcik, who lives in Webster Groves with her husband of 33 years, has strong St. Louis roots: Mom Mary Lou Duffy was a real estate agent for 21 years and brother Mike owns Mike Duffy’s in Kirkwood and Richmond Heights. I learned the real estate business at my mama’s knee, literally. She’s now 86 years old and as fabulous as ever! My favorite part of the job is helping people achieve the American dream. ‘Home’ is one of the most emotion-filled words in the English language. My goal is to make buying or selling a home as positive and stress-free as possible. Put the client first. That’s how you survive a recession and a sluggish market. If you take care of people, solve their problems and serve as an expert negotiator on their behalf, you’ll succeed. I love this job, but it’s not for everyone. If working midnights, holidays and vacations is what it takes, that’s what I do. Only the strong survive and thrive. You better be the best negotiator out there or your client will suffer from your lack of skills. Price cures all ills. Everything sells when the market likes the price. Everything. Not only has the market bounced back, it’s absolutely crazy! I just keep selling everything I’m listing. But even during the down market, I had my best year ever in 2010. I don’t depend on the market. I depend on my clients referring new business to me. There would be no wars if people just danced with each other! I discovered swing dancing about five years ago and it melts stress like magic. It’s so good for mind, body and soul. It’s my favorite happy pill. I even got my husband into it. There’s a real dance community here. Discover dancing and you’ll have 100 friends overnight. For 27 years, I have worked tirelessly for my clients and their dreams. That’s how you build a reputation: one day at a time, one client at a time
