[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] Retiring at 55: that’s the topic of this issue’s Assets & Answers. For those unfamiliar with that column, it’s where we pose a financial question to two local experts and share their advice with readers. It seems to me, retiring is hard enough without trying to do it 10 to 15 years early. But the experts say it can be done, under very specific conditions. For one thing, it takes lots of planning and self-control. It is not for the faint of heart—or for the self-indulgent spendthrift. It takes budgeting; if you’ve never done that, it’s safe to say you will not be retiring early. Same for the terms ‘401K,’ ‘brokerage accounts’ and ‘annuities’—if you’re not quite sure what they are, count on staying in the workforce for a nice long time. And if your answer to the question, What keeps you awake at night? is ‘the excitement of new boots’ rather than ‘how to get a better return on my money,’ well, early retirement is not for you either. You may as well go shopping; you’re going to get plenty of mileage out of your work wardrobe. And another important point to note: If you like to spend money now, that is not going to change when you’re retired. As our column points out, many people think their lifestyle will be pared down when they’re retired—then they have grandkids who come to visit and say, Bubby, can we go to Hanna Anderson and buy tons of clothes?

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE]
by tony di martino
TO GAIN EXPERTISE AND A COMPETITIVE EDGE in her quest for career advancement,
Valerie Davisson chose University College for her master’s degree in human resources management. “Deciding to get my master’s really centered on the competitive market in the St. Louis area,” explains Davisson, now chief people officer for At Home (formerly Garden Ridge). “At the time, jobs were scarce and unemployment was high. I needed a competitive advantage when it came to making career choices, and I also wanted a strong foundation of functional expertise. I knew University College could supply both.” University College, Washington University’s continuing education and professional studies division, offers a range of educational options, including part-time, evening and summer classes leading to undergraduate or graduate degrees; certification programs in specialized areas of study; and programs for students who want to pursue personal enrichment. “It provides a unique opportunity for adult students like me to experience the excitement of earning a degree or certificate from a world-class research institution,” Davisson says. Instructors include many Washington University faculty as well as accomplished members of the St. Louis community, such as successful business, science, and health professionals, working journalists, writers and performing artists, and Washington University graduate students and recent Ph.Ds. “The program at University College was great, but it was the faculty that really made a difference,” Davisson says. “They had diverse perspectives and experiences. They taught according to what was more relevant to the student and to the times, taking care to bring timely information to the classroom. They always took care to make sure each student had opportunities to share, be part of the dialogue, and feel connected to the coursework. They provided plenty of individual attention along the way. VALERIE DAVISSON PHOTO: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE And they understood that working students have families and limited free time. Their accessibility and flexibility made a huge difference.” Students who are enrolled in degree and select certificate programs and take a minimum number of credit hours each semester may qualify for both merit- and need-based scholarships. University College also offers donor-funded scholarships, made possible through the generous gifts of Washington University donors. It is also a Yellow Ribbon program participant, and eligible students can attend with no out-of-pocket expense for tuition and mandatory fees. Current faculty, staff and students will answer questions about programs and financial aid at Preview Night, an Aug. 7 information session at Holmes Lounge in Ridgley Hall on the Danforth campus. “It’s an enjoyable way for prospective students to meet faculty and other students in a relaxed atmosphere, and to find out which programs meet your needs and interests,” says Elizabeth Fogt, director of advising and student services. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m. “Earning a degree from University College opened doors for me that would not have opened otherwise,” Davisson says. “It allowed me to get my foot in the door with companies that might not have given me the time of day.”

Meds & Food for Kids, a St. Louis-based international relief organization founded by local pediatrician Dr. Patricia Wolff, recently had a special visitor at its peanut depot in Haiti: FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON. Dedicated to ending malnutrition and igniting economic development with a highly nutritious peanut butter made in Haiti, MFK has joined the Clinton Giustra Partnership, a network of 35 planned peanut depots in the economically depressed country. Joining Clinton were Bryan Sobel and Dorvil Weldenson of MFK’s agricultural team. The partnership, which includes Acceso Peanut Enterprise Corp. and the Peanut Mycotoxin Innovation Lab at the University of Georgia, will educate more than 12,000 Haitian peanut farmers on safe, efficient agricultural methods.

TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.
In the ongoing tussle between the Monarch Fire Protection District board and union firefighters, the firefighters just won a round. A county judge ruled two weeks ago that a vacancy at captain’s rank must be filled with one of three personnel who, with their union, filed suit in October,

arguing that the board intended to fill the position with someone who wasn’t in line for a promotion at that level. Meanwhile, you may recall, there’s apparently some fear among the board that saber-rattling over one disagreement or another could actually lead to bloodshed. The district, based in Chesterfield, continues to generate press for the administration’s desire to place bulletproof vests close at hand for board members. Seems they’re hot under the collar about fire Capt. Chris Gelven talking to the media about the vests. The board could fire Gelven. A few weeks ago, a score of firefighters and their families took to the street in front of administrative headquarters (13725 Olive Blvd.) with placards decrying the current state of affairs: ‘Striking a match against public safety,’ read one. Another proclaimed, ‘Your fire district is burning down.’ But two men, both former chiefs of Monarch, didn’t feel compelled to keep their mouths shut. Tom Vineyard, now chief in O’Fallon, said board friction convinced him to resign and take the new job. This board wanted to put the kibosh on pink T-shirts firefighters purchased and wore to support breast cancer awareness, with a ‘Pink Heals’ graphic accompanying the district logo. Let’s hope the board and firefighters don’t allow the continuing brouhaha to take their eyes off the ball, which is to provide prompt and effective response to the towns of Chesterfield, Ballwin, Creve Coeur and Wildwood, plus a vast area of unincorporated county. All too often, first responders must deal with mentally ill subjects, many of whom may be suicidal and put others’ lives in
OF THE
jeopardy if and when they end their own. Trying to negotiate with a person intent on leaping from a bridge to the highway below is daunting. About 75 county police officers last week completed an intensive annual training to better equip themselves for the eventuality. Officers took time away from the streets to complete a five-day, 40-hour training course that focused on the difficulties of communicating with this population, about 85 percent of whom are suicidal. Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) prepares officers for the 60 to 80 mental-health calls County Police dispatchers receive in any given week. Funding for the program comes from the Missouri CIT Council.
kids last year from Normandy, is not named in the suit. Huh? Plaintiffs’ attorneys say the suit was designed to represent a cross-section of districts whose families were affected by the displacement. Plus, the seven plaintiffs came aboard based on their willingness to serve in that capacity. Indeed, we empathize with anyone concerned about their kids’ quality of education, but it’s egregious to include districts trying to do right by the transferred kids with those that washed their hands of them!
It’s probably nothing like the demise of the Parkmoor, the penultimate diner, which closed its doors on the Richmond Heights-Clayton border in 1999 after a run of nearly 70 years. But the very first St. Louis Bread Co., which opened in Kirkwood in 1987, is closing. (Perspective, please: Today there are about 100 Panera bakery-cafes in and around St. Louis. Parkmoor, no more—ever.) But the restaurant will open in a new, expanded location at 10221 Manchester Road, right across the street from its present location, 10312. It represents more on the go for this on-the-go company: drive-through, easier customer pickup and the like for the restaurant that pioneered free Wi-Fi, making it a must-have everywhere else. There’s not a thing wrong with Bread Co., but it’s a little too much like Starbucks: Everywhere you turn, it seems, there they are. And, drive-through, schmive-through. Local lore indicates the Parkmoor, one of eventually six throughout the Lou, was the area’s first drive-up restaurant, with carhops, ‘fountain boys’ and the whole schmear.
Scams are, well, a dime a dozen. Bad for victims but lucrative for scammers, they aren’t likely to go away anytime soon. Here’s a new wrinkle, at least for us: scammers posing as someone from the Internal Revenue Service. A couple from St. Charles says they received two calls from people who claimed to be from the IRS, threatening legal action. Someone, of course, will take the bait and send money to avoid trouble, without asking any questions. These unfortunates probably are the same people who send funds to rescue an acquaintance from having to pay trumped-up charges at a London hotel or Vegas casino (where the alleged detainees, who correspond only via email, have had to surrender their cellphones, of course). And if they don’t bite at that one, maybe they’ll try to help a deposed Nigerian prince get his money out of the country ... and so on. Apparently, even folks who weren’t born yesterday fall for this sort of stuff, which is a heck of a lot worse than simply buying a ‘car from a little old lady from Pasadena.’ Here’s a tip from the IRS: It will not call you on the phone with questions about, much less answers to, your tax problems. It is a little more old-school about getting in touch with you, leaving that to another federal agency: the U.S. Postal Service!
Along with Normandy schools and the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Ladue and Clayton school districts are among six named in a suit by seven Normandy parents apparently upset that their kids are to be transferred back to the bankrupt North County district, now known as Normandy Schools Collaborative. Other districts named in the suit are Brentwood, Parkway, Pattonville and Ritnour. What? We noted a few weeks ago that the 30 transferred to Ladue may stay, that Parkway had made the same decision about its 33, and that Clayton was still mulling over whether to allow its 19 to remain. It gets curiouser. Francis Howell District, which had taken in 400-some
Don’t go near the water! We understand that it’s not a good idea to take a dip in River Des Peres or local streams like Deer Creek—who knows what nastiness lurks therein? But the city pool? County health officials closed down the pool at Webster Groves Recreation Center for a couple of days last month because of bacteria levels. Specifically, e. coli. Now, before anyone freaks out about the Plague, Webster Groves took emergency measures and cleared up the trace amounts found. This is a delicate balance. Chlorine is like kryptonite to bacteria, but swimmers tend to complain when it’s at the recommended, ‘super-chlorinated’, level. This summer, Webster’s is one of only five pools that

have had to close temporarily because of bacteria levels. Two of the other public pools are the wading pool at Crestwood Aquatic Center and the municipal pool in Manchester. County health officials test nearly 1,000 pools yearly, including those at apartment complexes and schools. Although keeping itty-bitty organisms at bay may make the water smell funny, we should be glad health officials are on the job. Remember: Proper hygiene and simple common sense certainly make it easier for them. (Some of you may have a poolhouse sign that reads something like this: ‘Welcome to Our Ool. Please Help Us Keep the ‘P’ Out of It.’)
WILDWOOD for‘Wetheapologize previous
apology’ is a favorite Monty Python line among fans of the British comedy troupe. The latest posturing of former U.S. Rep. Todd Akin fit right in with anyone who loves such theater of the ridiculous. During his 2012 campaign to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., Akin famously remarked in an interview with Fox News host Charles Jaco that in cases of rape, the female reproductive system “has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” precluding the need for an abortion. An uproar ensued from both sides of the aisle, and Akin apologized for his remarks about what he had referred to as “legitimate rape”… whatever that is. (Jaco later called his failure to ask Akin a follow-
up question, well, “boneheaded.”) After the Wildwood Republican was defeated, some probably thought the only lasting mark he’d make in history would be ignominious. Long story short, our sanctimonious neighbor is back with a book: Firing Back: Taking on the Party Bosses and Media Elite to Protect Our Faith and Freedom. (Try saying that five times fast.) And the book withdraws his apology! We can only roll our eyes. Democrats have said many things this go-round about Akin, with ‘delusional’ one of the nicer adjectives. Meanwhile, Ron Bonjean, described at politico.com as a Republican operative, says many in the GOP wish Akin would ‘take a one-way ticket to Europe and not come back for a while.’

by raschelle burton & patty hannum I WAS RECENTLY AT A BAR AND SAW MY FRIEND’S WIFE KISSING ANOTHER MAN. SHE DID NOT SEE ME AND NOW I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. DO I TELL MY FRIEND WHAT I SAW? —KISS AND TELL
PATTY: I really wish there was a way we could ‘unsee’ things. You know, like car crashes, older women in crop tops, bad tattoos and friends doing things they shouldn’t be doing. No, do not say anything to her husband. You have no idea who or why she was kissing that man. Could it have been her brother, cousin, or former high school boyfriend? There are people in the world who are kissers and huggers. And then there are the rest of us who would like to get by with a simple handshake and head nod. The only thing I would suggest is the next time you see your friend’s wife, mention you saw her at the bar but since you didn’t recognize her friend you did not stop by because you did not want to intrude. Her response will answer any questions you might have. An “Oh, no, you should have come over and met my cousin Mark” is what you want to hear. If she coughs up something else, write us back. Actually, don’t, neither Raschelle nor I is qualified to give you advice on what to do next. RASCHELLE: Ew! Patty! C’mon there’s no mistaking a ‘cousin kiss’ from a ‘boyfriend kiss’—ever! Yes, you definitely have to say something—if you don’t say something it makes you an accomplice, of sorts. And since your friend is, well, your friend, I think your allegiance belongs with him. What’s that frat-boy saying, “bros before h….” Oh, never mind. Just tell him. He won’t like hearing it and his wife won’t ever get over it, but I believe most people would rather be hurt with the truth than comforted with a lie. Unless your friend is profoundly deluded, my guess is he will agree.

I HAVE A FRIEND WHO IS DATING A MUCH YOUNGER WOMAN, AND I AM PRETTY SURE SHE WOULD NOT BE DATING HIM EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT HE IS REALLY WEALTHY. SHOULD I TELL HIM I THINK IT IS A MISTAKE? —NOTHING BUT A GOLD DIGGER
PATTY: No. Don’t say a word. I have been to two different weddings where I knew the marriage was a big mistake. Let me emphasize the word ‘big’. I desperately wanted to tell the grooms to run fast and far. I surprised myself and everyone who knows me and kept my mouth shut. Both marriages failed but I can guarantee you if I had told either of these men that their future wives were bat-sh*t crazy, they would have still married them and I would have lost two dear, lifelong friends. Love is blind. You have no idea what goes on between them. It could be your friend is perfectly OK with being Mr. Moneybags. So unless he asks for your opinion, keep it to yourself. RASCHELLE: Yes, love is blind but friendship tries not to notice. In this case, you can’t not notice, so of course, you have to say something. It’s a classic no-brainer. You telling him doesn’t mean he won’t marry her; it just means that when it doesn’t work, you can sit in the ‘I told you so’ seat. How sweet will that be? I know after I got divorced people came out in droves to tell me they were opposed to the marriage from the start. I was appalled. Why didn’t anyone say anything? I thought. Sometimes aloud. I never really got a good answer, and something shiny floated by so I stopped thinking about it. So tell him what you think and then remember this gem from Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach: In youth we learn, in age we understand. 121 Hunter Ave. Suite 201 | 314.657.2100 | townandstyle.com

MY HUSBAND AND I ARE IN OUR MID-40S AND HOPING TO RETIRE AT 55. WHAT COURSE OF ACTION CAN WE TAKE NOW TO MAKE OUR DREAM A REALITY?
I’ve been doing this since 1987, and the truth is, there aren’t many people who can really retire at 55! But it’s possible, if you have a reasonable amount of money and if you plan carefully. First, define and prioritize your goals. You’d be surprised at how many couples have completely different visions for their retirement years. The husband’s idea of paradise might be retiring to a fishing boat in the Bahamas; the wife might have her own dream. Once you agree on your goals, take a thorough inventory of what you have—savings, investments, insurance, 401(k)s, brokerage accounts, other potential income (Social Security, annuities, pensions, inheritances), etc. Next, using current expenditures and future goals as a guide, figure out what it will cost you to live when you retire, allowing for inflation. Strongly consider setting aside at least three to six months of living expenses in case of emergencies. Don’t forget about long-term health care. Then draw up a monthly retirement budget and decide how you’re going to get there—and the level of risk you can tolerate. I always ask, What keeps you awake at night? Again, this is an area where many couples differ. One partner might worry about the stability of their money, the other might be more concerned about the return on their money.

Ask yourself, When do I want to retire? and How much will I need (or better yet, want) per month? Many clients think they’ll spend less when they’re older: the kids are no longer living at home, you don’t have to worry about tuition, mortgages may be retired, etc. But maybe you want to travel more, spend money on the grandchildren, buy a vacation home or become more philanthropic. So figure out what your everyday living expenses and other expenditures might look like, and create a budget. Then work with your financial adviser to develop an annual savings and investment strategy to fund your nest egg. An employer-sponsored retirement plan can be a smart place to park some of your retirement savings, given the tax advantages and potential for a company-provided matching contribution. However, IRAs (both traditional and Roth) as well as taxable investment accounts can also be good ways to accomplish your goals. Your adviser will help strike the right balance between taking advantage of current tax breaks and having a diversified tax situation during retirement. As your retirement date approaches, begin ‘de-risking’ your portfolio so investments are well-positioned for withdrawals.

I D❤! JESSICA HOLT & SEAN KELLY] by stephanie zeilenga | photos by stephen seebeck
5 | 14 | 2014
YOU NEVER KNOW WHERE LIGHTNING WILL STRIKE. Sean Kelly certainly didn’t expect it when he visited Clarkson Eyecare in 2012 for a routine checkup. Jessica Holt, who works on the corporate side of the company, happened to drop in the store that day. The two chatted, he asked her to dinner, and two years later they became husband and wife. With the help of his teenage daughters, Sean proposed in June 2013. The ring incorporated his Greek grandmother’s century-old, mine-cut diamond. “My grandmother and her husband were married for 50 years—it was a real inspiration to me,” Sean says. This spring, surrounded by 75 of their closest friends and family, Sean and Jessica exchanged vows in The Chase Park Plaza’s Empire Room. Sean’s daughters, Elisabeth and Reilly, were bridesmaids, and Jessica’s nephews, Nicholas and Samuel, were groomsmen. “Family is really important to us,” Sean says. “It was an intimate celebration, and we limited it to people who had really been there for us throughout the years. It resulted in a fun and joyous event.” After the ceremony, guests headed to the Chase’s elegant Zodiac Room, where they were treated to live music from Kingpin, the couple’s favorite local band, a Fisheye photo booth and hand-rolled cigars. “We set up cafe tables and lights on the Zodiac Room’s outside patio, so people could step outside and enjoy the cigars,” Sean says. Following the wedding, Sean and Jessica traveled to Waikiki with Sean’s daughters. The new family lives in Webster Groves. Sean is vice president of production management at Wells Fargo, and Jessica is an insurance operations manager at Clarkson Eyecare.

I D❤! LINDA CHOU & BEN LAM] 5 | 25 | 2014
by stephanie zeilenga photos by hjn photography, of nashville, tenn.; kei fuchigami photography IT WAS A CHANCE MEETING ON A ROAD TRIP from Nashville to St. Louis in April 2010. Linda Chou met Ben Lam, a University of Missouri grad who settled in St. Louis, at Mandarin House, a Chinese restaurant off Page Avenue. Their relationship blossomed across states, before Linda eventually moved to attend graduate school at Washington University. John proposed in September 2013, on the couple’s first day in their new house. “The day of the move-in, his family helped us unload the trucks, and then he popped the question,” Linda says. “I was totally surprised.” The late-spring wedding at The Westin St. Louis featured vivid pops of deep pink, crisp black suits and delicate pink bouquets. Among those in attendance was Linda’s cousin from Suriname, where Linda was born. “I still have a lot of family there, and my cousin was able to come as a representative for that branch of the family,” she says. The night before, Linda, John and close family members gathered at Mandarin House for a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. The couple served their elders tea and, in return, the elders blessed the marriage by giving the bride gold jewelry and the couple money in red pockets. “We’re both of Chinese background,” Linda explains. “My husband was born here and I moved to the States when I was young, but we still carry on the traditions from our parents.” Next year, Linda and John are planning to honeymoon in Europe. The new Mr. and Mrs. live in St. Louis, where Linda works for Anheuser-Busch and John works for Hewlett-Packard.

GOING, GOING, GONE
Link Auction Galleries, launched by former Ivey-Selkirk Auctioneers employees, hosted a grand opening in June and its first auction July 12 and 13. The new auction house operates out of the historic St. John’s United Methodist Church at 5000 Washington Place, built in 1902 and designed by noted architect Theodore Link, after whom the company is named. In addition to eight fine art and antiques gallery auctions each year, the company plans to host monthly more casual ‘Link Bazaar’ auctions featuring decorative objects, furnishings and artwork.
DECOR FROM DELMAR
Filling the gap left by Pizazz Furniture’s closing earlier this year, Loop Living Furniture recently opened in University City. Loop-goers now can furnish their digs with a variety of contemporary home goods from the new store located at the corner of Delmar Boulevard and Limit Avenue.
THE SWEDISH ARE COMING!
Last month, ultra-popular home furnishings retailer Ikea broke ground on its new location in the Cortex Innovation District at Vandeventer Avenue and Interstate 64 —the brand’s first store in the state. Mayor Francis Slay and other political and business leaders attended the groundbreaking of the 380,000-square-foot store, set to open in fall 2015.
ANCHORS AWAY
Last month saw St. Louis Sail & Paddle, formerly the St. Louis Sailing Center, close its doors. Located in Earth City, the water sport purchase, repair and accessory destination served Midwestern boating enthusiasts for more than three decades. Owners Amy and Cyril Narishkin, who acquired the operation in 2010, said they wished to pursue other ventures.
CHEFS IN TRAINING
It’s time for kids to get cookin’ at Chesterfield Mall. Recently opened Honey Kids Kitchen offers cooking classes, birthday parties and a boutique shop with everything a little chef needs, including aprons and cooking utensils. Kids also can create their own custom candy bar, ready in 12 minutes.

SPINA BIFIDA is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States, affecting 1 in every 1,000 babies. It occurs when the spinal cord and bones don’t form and close properly during fetal development. One of the most severe types, myelomeningocele (MMC), can cause lifelong disabilities. “Many children born with MMC have varying degrees of lower-body paralysis, and some never walk at all,” says Dr. Mike Vlastos of SLUCare, the physicians of Saint Louis University. “Most kids with the defect need a shunt in their brain to remove excessive fluid buildup from hydrocephalus. The shunt can break, clog or get infected, and sometimes needs to be replaced.” In the past, the only way to treat MMC was to perform surgery after the baby’s birth. But damage to the spinal cord and nerves often worsened throughout the mother’s pregnancy. “Now, thanks to a groundbreaking in-utero surgery advanced at St. Louis Fetal Care Institute at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, babies with MMC can be operated on before they’re born, with much better results,” says Vlastos, director of the Institute and assistant professor of maternal-fetal medicine at SLU School of Medicine. The institute was one of the first in the country to offer the procedure after results of the MOMS (Management of MMC) trials, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, were released in 2011. It’s now one of only 10 centers in the country performing the surgery, and the only one in the Midwest. “Fetal MMC repair helps reduce or eliminate major complications associated with the defect,” says SLUCare’s Dr. Samer Elbabaa, Reinert chair pediatric neurosurgery, associate professor of neurosurgery and director of pediatric neurosurgery at SLU School of Medicine and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “More than 80 percent of babies need a brain shunt with standard postnatal surgery, but prenatal repair reduces that need by half. Most also experience increased spinal cord function, resulting in less

paralysis in the lower body.” The procedure, performed at SSM St. Mary’s Health Center by Vlastos, Elbabaa and their team, takes place 19 to 26 weeks into the pregnancy. Making a bikini-line incision similar to that used for a Caesarian section, Vlastos repositions the baby to reveal its lower back. Elbabaa, using intricate microsurgical techniques, closes the covering of the baby’s spinal cord. Then Vlastos repairs the womb. The entire procedure takes between three and four hours. “We’ve done 35 surgeries in three years, making us one of the fastest-growing, most experienced programs in the country,” Elbabaa says. Vlastos and Elbabaa credit SLU, Cardinal Glennon and St. Mary’s for providing the necessary infrastructure and expertise. “The entire team, including our nurses and care coordinators, works together to ensure the best possible outcome for the little ones in our care,” Vlastos says. “We’re dedicated to helping families faced with this difficult diagnosis. What a great feeling, knowing you’re changing the lives of these kids and their families for the better.”

Seedz is one of a new wave of vegan restaurants opening in town. The food is organic, mostly raw and very tasty. Normally a proud carnivore, I am happy to report that the food is packed with flavor, and more important, satisfying. The place is tiny, about 10 tables, with an open kitchen. Diners step up to the register and order from a chalkboard list, then food is brought to them. Nuts are used to provide the fat and creaminess, while garlic and herbs intensify the flavors. And, thankfully, the seasonings are not overdone, so the flavors are smooth and pleasing. The Pad Thai ($12), for example, has a light cilantro and garlic taste tossed into a mass of zucchini ‘noodles’ (zucchini put through some kind of noodle machine to yield squiggles of green and white). Also in there
zucchini, and a sauce with some peanut butter. The Tempeh Ruben ($11) had slices of smoky ‘bacon’ rolled inside romaine lettuce with tangy sauerkraut, sprouts and house-made 1000 island dressing, all in a multi-grain wrap. A pleasant corn and pepper relish accompanied the sandwich. The total effect was crunchy and packed with flavors. Corn Tostadas ($9.95) were an excellent blend of brown rice, black beans and shredded greens piled onto crisp tortillas. A drizzle of creamy cashew butter added another element of texture and richness, and tomato-based salsa, offered on the side, provided a flavorful spiciness. Starters included that day’s special, gazpacho ($5), a very creamy blend of zucchini, corn, garlic, basil and

thick and almost grainy concoction made with sprouted chickpeas (more nutritious than the non-sprouted variety) and served with organic veggies: carrot and celery sticks, zucchini slices and grape tomatoes. Drinks here are special and our Tropical Smoothie was worth the $9 price tag (organics cost more). The blend of pineapple, coconut, dates and mango was sweet, thick and yummy. Also noteworthy are the beers—house made and organic. Our double Trappist Belgian Ale was full-bodied and smooth, 8 ounces for $4. Where improvement is needed would be the desserts—it’s hard to work around no eggs, cream, butter and refined sugar. Brownie bites were made with cocoa and ground walnuts; macaroons with brazil nuts and coconut; each was $2 but not terribly satisfying.

ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR TWO-WEEK RUNS, three recent productions by St. Louis theaters reminded me of one of the most significant facts about theater: it is in the here-and-now, no matter if we’re watching Oedipus Rex in Thebes, Blanche DuBois in New Orleans or Anna Karenina in St. Petersburg. Such is the case with Insight Theatre Company’s Over the River and Through the Woods, Joe DiPietro’s warm-hearted, carefully crafted comedy about a tight-knit Italian American family of first- and second-generation immigrants and the grandson they share. He is about to disrupt their treasured Sunday dinners by accepting a promotion that will move him across the country to Seattle. Audiences embrace this play, and so do community theaters, because it has four juicy roles for actors of a certain age who don’t get many such opportunities. So I have now seen Over the River and Through the Woods several times. I thoroughly enjoyed it the first time or two. But jokes wear thin with the fourth or fifth telling, even when well told. Other recent productions included the first round of the St. Louis Actors’ Studio’s LaBute Theater Festival. The playwright and film director Neil LaBute provides the Actors’ Studio with a new one-act play each summer and serves as one of the judges of new one-acts submitted to the Festival. Several of these plays are then produced along with LaBute’s contribution. This summer’s first round of four new plays, plus LaBute’s, just ended their twoweek run. Three more plays, again with LaBute’s, run for the next two weeks. Despite excellent acting and directing, I was disappointed with the DEBBY LENNON AND ZULIMA LOPEZ-HERNANDEZ scripts the first round. They dealt with too-familiar IN LA TRAVIATA material and added nothing to it. One had a Russian immigrant telling about an anti-Semitic incident that happened in his family when he was a boy. This was what got me thinking about how we experience theater. It was not a play, but a short story told to us—very well—by an actor playing the role of the immigrant. But he was not acting the story, he was telling it. It was something that happened in his past, yet as we are watching it, it appears to be happening there, right before us in the present. It’s the fiction we all, on the stage and in the audience, agree to believe in order to create the reality—the fictional, virtual reality—of theater. Even if it’s a story from three millennia ago, Oedipus is standing there with his bloody eye-sockets, right now, in front of us. The grandson in Over the River and Through the Woods enters the stage to tell us his story, but as soon as he enters his grandparents’ house, it’s no longer a story about what once happened because it’s happening right now. In Union Avenue Opera’s recent splendid production of Verdi’s La Traviata (with Zulimar López-Hernández’s magnificent singing and acting as the doomed courtesan Violetta), director Tim Ocel had the interesting idea of having Alfredo descend during the overture into the crypt of the church where Violetta is buried, and there remember his time with her. But as soon as the other performers appear, we are no longer in Alfredo’s memories. We are there, with Violetta and Alfredo, inside the story. It is one of the glories of theater that it gives us images of life not as something that was once alive and is now words on a page or paint on canvas, but as life that is alive right now.

empathy.” So says Roger Ebert in the opening scenes of this honest, warm, emotional documentary about the prolific film critic and social commentator. As a lifelong enthusiast about the magic of movies, Ebert encouraged many emerging directors, including Werner Herzog and Martin Scorsese. To hear the latter talk about the impact Ebert had on his career is one of the documentary’s highlights. Filming began only five months before Ebert’s death in April 2013, but Life Itself delivers what feels like a complete picture of a complex man’s life, from his days at the Chicago Sun-Times, where he became the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize, to his time on the small screen with Gene Siskel and his subsequent ascent as one of America’s most influential cultural figures. Although lauding Ebert’s many accomplishments, the film doesn’t whitewash his imperfections, including his alcoholism and at-times arrogant treatment of Siskel. Much of the film’s emotional heft and heart come from Chaz, who married Ebert when he was 50. When he lost the ability to speak in the 2000s, she became his voice. It’s troubling to see Ebert struggle through his last months, but the tenderness between Chaz and Ebert holds its own next to any of the great cinematic romances. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Two thumbs up. —S.Z.

[TWEAKING THE BODY] by dorothy weiner, tony di martino, gregory katski
EVERYONE WANTS TO LOOK AS GOOD AS THEY FEEL, BUT GRAVITY—NOT TO MENTION TIME—IS NOT OUR FRIEND. THE GOOD NEWS IS WE LIVE DURING A PERIOD OF AMAZING TECHNOLOGY, AND TECHNOLOGY CAN BE VERY FRIENDLY. READ ABOUT THE OPTIONS AND DECIDE IF SOME PROCEDURE, INVASIVE OR NON, MIGHT JUST BE YOUR FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH.
COSMETIC SHELF LIFE
HOW LONG CAN WE EXPECT TO KEEP THE RESULTS of those cosmetic tweaks that help us look younger and better? The good news: most cosmetic surgeries last a good long time, and the way they ‘age’ varies from person to person.

BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY with either saline or silicone implants is safe and can be expected to last decades, says Dr. Michele Koo, a St. Louis board-certified plastic surgeon. “But the natural aging process affects the breasts as well as the IM rest of the body,” Koo says. Dr. Judith Gurley of Dr. Judith Gurley Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa agrees. While augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, implant surgery—whether elective or corrective, as in mastectomy cases—may need follow-up. “Extreme weight fluctuation or weight gain due to childbirth and aging naturally can increase the need for future procedures,” Gurley says. Those possibilities are discussed during the initial visit with a surgeon, so informed decisions can be made. “Choosing plastic surgery at the right time in your life can result in lifelong benefits. Breast implants are FDA- approved and are the safest and longest lasting they have ever been,” assures Gurley.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS HATED YOUR ARMS? There is a fix for that, too. Loose arm skin can be removed, with scars somewhat hidden, but not completely. This procedure is usually recommended when the problem is loose skin, known as ‘batwings,’ rather than fat in the upper arms. There are a number of reasons women have this condition, including weight loss, aging and genetics. For fat in the arms, liposuction is usually the preferred process. “The scar is a tradeoff, but for women who never could wear tank tops or those cute little dresses, well, they say it’s miraculous,” says Koo. She explains that the scar is hidden while the arms are down, giving patients much more freedom than when they had loose, wobbly skin.

TUMMY TUCKS AND BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURES have the potential to last a lifetime— but that is not a certainty. Many factors come into play, most important being weight fluctuation— either too much or too little. You can’t expect to keep the results of a slimmed-down body without a slimmed-down diet, the docs say. “Skin removed in a tummy tuck and breast reduction is permanent, as long as you don’t gain and/or lose a lot of weight,” confirms Gurley. Weight loss can alter the effects of breast reduction, explains Koo. “Say a woman got breast reduction when she was young, and it enabled her to start exercising more. She might get so much lighter that her breasts can seem deflated,” she says. In that case, the patient may need an entirely different breast adjustment. “But there is no such thing as ‘permanent’ with the body,” says Koo. “Everything in life takes maintenance, so why not our bodies?” She points out that both natural and reconstructed breasts will show signs of aging, at which time women have decisions to make. “As long as the patient makes decisions with informed consent, she will understand what she’s in for. I cannot tell you how happy patients are after these surgeries. It’s empowering and it changes their lives.”

If you just didn’t get your fair share of lash hair, Latisse might help you even the playing field. Applied topically to lashes to increase growth, length and fullness, the product was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2009, and it remains the only FDAapproved prescription eyelash treatment. “Latisse has been available for several years and has been shown to be effective and safe,” says Dr. William G. Hart of W.G. Hart Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery Institute. Hart recommends the product to his patients, adding that minor side effects can appear in some. “In a small percentage of people, irises may darken or change color.” Between $50 and $300 per four-month bottle, Latisse is available only through trusted cosmetic providers and physicians. Its recommended use is once a day applied to the base of clean upper lashes using an applicator.
If you’re looking for immediate results, XTREME LASH extensions provide a quick, long-lasting, fix. Made of non-allergenic, synthetic polyester, these are designed to imitate the shape, weight and texture of natural lashes. Autumn LaTour, licensed cosmetologist and owner of STLmakeup & Lash Studio, says the extensions are done lash by lash. “You still might have thin lashes, but it will help give the appearance of a fuller lash line because it’s darkening the lash line.” After the initial treatment, which can cost between $250 and $600, patients usually come back every two to four weeks for new extensions as their lashes cycle and turn over. LaTour considers Xtreme Lashes a “great alternative” to applying strip-style false lashes every day.

What about Angelina Jolie lips? There are injectibles, implantable materials, surgical procedures and fat injections. “Hyaluronic acid injectibles such as Restylane, Juvederm and Voluma add subtle volume when artfully used,” Hart says. “Restylane lasts between three and five months, Juvederm can last up to seven months, and Voluma is being touted to last up to a year and a half,” Hart notes. Fat injections, using small amounts of excess pudge harvested from the buttocks or thigh area, also can be added to the lips to increase volume. “All of these can be done in the doctor’s office under a local block,” Hart says.

FOR STUBBORN WRINKLES
MORE LASTING LIPS
If you’re looking for a permanent result, an implant should be considered. “Both Gortex and implantable soft silicone can be used, but the soft silicone are more well-tolerated,” Hart says. And if drooping lips are an issue, a lip-lift can excise skin between the upper lip and the nose, moving the skin upward. “A similar but more effective procedure, a V-Y advancement, is done along the junction of the wet and dry lip mucosa, resulting in a significant increase in volume in the upper and lower lips,” Hart explains.
Here, laser resurfacing may be the best choice. “It uses light energy to injure the skin,” Hart explains. Newer techniques use a fractionated beam of laser energy. Fractora, which combines radio frequency energy with needles, is another option. “The energy is delivered through fine needles insulated with silicone,” says Hart. “There are up to 120 needles in a postage stamp-sized pattern. They injure the dermis while protecting the overlying skin and epidermis. The results are very effective, with less downtime than other options.”
While there is no permanent fix for smoker’s lines, those annoying vertical wrinkles that radiate from the upper lip of smokers and sun worshippers, treatments can smooth them over or plump them out, Hart says. Options include chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, injectibles, implantable devices and surgical procedures. “A peel involves applying a layer of a chemical solution, like salicylic or glycolic acid for superficial lines, Tricor acetic acid for deeper ones,” Hart explains. These cause a healing response and a thickening of the dermal layer. Dermabrasion works much the same way, but uses an abrasive wheel to scour away the top layer of skin. “Both procedures require a week to 10 days for the skin to heal, and cause varying degrees of pinkness that gradually subsides,” Hart says.

fat busters
We all have them: stubborn problem areas that no amount of exercise or dieting seems to help. Whether it’s love handles that are too much to handle or saddlebags we don’t want to be saddled with anymore, today’s technology usually can help.
THE LATEST IN LIPO
Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures used today for ‘perfecting’ the body, says DR. RICHARD MOORE, medical director of The Lifestyle Center and Hair Restoration in Clayton. In his practice, he recommends Tickle lipo. “It breaks up fat in a much more selective way,” Moore notes. He also calls it 80 to 90 percent less traumatic than traditional liposuction, since it uses an ultrasonic wand waved in a “whisk kind of manner” rather than the usual ‘tunneling’ motion used in traditional liposuction. “For an outpatient procedure, I think it’s the most comfortable form of liposuction with the least amount of trauma and the highest volume of fat removal,” Moore says. “It does very well in areas that are really fibrous, like the upper abdomen and upper back.” As for traditional liposuction, Moore says it tends to yield a more uneven result than some of the more advanced technologies. “It’s less selective than other procedures, so you get more tissue damage,” he explains.

FREEZING, HEATING & ZAPPING
Noninvasive procedures may not take care of all the fat, all the time, but they can help make headway in our fight against fat. Moore prefers Body FX, “because you can transition zones and get some skin tightening with it, while destroying the fat,” he says. Body FX uses radio frequency waves to destroy about 30 to 35 percent of targeted fat cells, he explains. “It’s not as much as you’re going to get with liposuction, but for someone who wants a noninvasive treatment, that’s pretty nice.” CoolSculpting, which freezes fat, is thought to destroy between 25 and 27 percent of fat cells. Moore says because this process treats only limited areas at a time, “People typically have to come back three or four times.” Vanquish, another option, uses radio frequency waves to heat and disrupt fat cells, supposedly abolishing 30 to 35 percent of targeted fat cells, and results in good skin tightening, says Moore, but Body FX “has been around longer.”
NOT AS EASY AS YOU THINK
But despite the array of fat-busting options available, there is no magic wand when it comes to fat removal, cautions dermatologist DR. JOSEPH MUCCINI of MidAmerica Skin Health & Vitality Center. “Saddlebags on the thighs, jiggly upper arms, back fat, that paunch hanging over your belt—in these cases, treatments such as lipo, injections, radio frequency, ultrasound, cold laser or combinations thereof may be what you need.” But, “If you need to lose 50 or 60 pounds, none of them will work for you,” he points out. “They target only the fat that accumulates between the skin and muscle. If you’re overweight or obese, you’ve got visceral fat around your organs. That’s a completely different issue, and you need to get it under control before you consider lipo or anything else.” Even relatively fit individuals need to approach fat-busting technology with realistic expectations. “Always ask your doctor, ‘Does this procedure actually destroy and remove the fat cells, or does it simply cause a reduction in fat?’” Procedures such as lipo, CoolSculpting, radio frequency waves and ultrasound can actually kill cells; a cold laser such as i-Lipo merely breaks down stored fat and releases it through the cell membranes, he explains. “Either way, if you don’t take care of yourself, you’ll regain the fat—and if you regain it after you’ve had a cell-destroying procedure, the fat can come back in funny places, or be unevenly distributed.”
314.657.2100 | townandstyle.com
Can’t get rid of it?
Credentials, Credentials, Credentials
Both physicians stress the importance of using trained professionals. Every practice is different, and doctors specializing in fat reduction can vary greatly in their credentials; in some cases technicians in their office routinely perform some of the procedures. In any instance, patients should ask who will be doing their procedure, what that person’s credentials are, and most important, how many such procedures they have performed in the past.

PARENT TRAP THE POWER OF PAPER AND PEN ] by dr. tim jordan THERE IS SOMETHING REALLY SPECIAL ABOUT receiving a handwritten note from someone you love. I experienced the power of this firsthand recently at a father-daughter retreat in Colorado. We had the father-daughter pairs write letters to each other, and on the last night we sat around a campfire, with mountains on the horizon and stars twinkling above. The dads read their letters to their middle school daughter; then the girls read their own notes to their dads. There was not a dry eye in the house. Many of the girls said that although they knew their dads loved them, they didn’t realize how much they were loved and how many qualities their dads appreciated in them. As for the dads, it was just a heartfelt affirmation of the special bond between fathers and daughters. Several dads shared how the unconditional love received from their girls was unlike any other they had experienced in their lives. I encourage parents to create a ‘letter box’ for each of their children to keep important letters kids receive during their childhood. Proactively ask people in your child’s life, like grandparents, aunts and uncles to write them letters at significant times, i.e. 13th and 16th birthdays, high school and college graduations, the day of their marriage, when their first child is born, when they turn 21 or 40. The letter writers can relate stories about their own experiences at those times in their lives, and maybe give
advice about what they learned to best traverse those ages. When my kids were growing up, I kept a running journal for each of them. About once a year I’d take it with me on an out-of-town trip and write entries about each one during the plane ride. I’d journal about how I saw them at each age, the qualities I admired, things we were doing together, and my vision for them based on the character and interests they were exhibiting at that time. I haven’t given it to them yet, but I think it’s time. One dad I know is writing a book for his children, outlining his history and what he’s learned in his life. He wants to pass on any wisdom he’s obtained and any significant experiences he’s had up until now. He has inspired me to do the same. So many parents never tell their children stories about their past, and in the process they lose a great way to connect and let kids know that they really can understand what they are going through. One final thought. Despite the ease new technology and gadgets bring to writing, I recommend your notes be handwritten. Reading a letter in a loved-one’s handwriting feels more personal and special. It’s like they are still there with you, in person, when they’re far away or completely gone. Make letter writing a new tradition in your family.

The Louis Collection—Inspired homes in honor of Louis Payne Exclusively from Payne Family Homes
COVER STORY
PAYNE FAMILY] HOMES by rebecca koenig
ALTHOUGH THE STREET PAVEMENT IS BARELY DRY in Vintage Grove, it’s easy to imagine trick or treat gatherings and Fourth of July block parties just by looking at the new residential development’s plans. The boutique, 11-home community by Payne Family Homes is situated on a single, quaint cul-de-sac off Old State Road in Wildwood. “We’re very excited to be in Wildwood,” says Ken Kruse, company president. “It’s all newly designed based on today’s lifestyle needs.” Payne Family Homes has constructed houses since 2006 and has 23 developments in St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson counties. Wildwood real estate tends to fall into extreme categories, according to Cyndie Roche, Payne vice president of sales and marketing. “You have very small subdivisions and then estates 3 acres and up,” she says. But Vintage Grove offers a middle option that preserves the rural feel treasured by many Wildwood residents yet is in a more affordable range. “It’s secluded yet not tucked away down winding roads,” Roche says. “It’s your quiet little oasis.” Home models in the new, exclusive Louis Collection are available in ranch, 1.5 and two stories, and prices start right under $500,000. The collection is intended for a variety of homeowners, from families with children to empty nesters hoping to downsize but not looking for apartment living. “We’re seeing busy families, often two-income, with kids who need lots of places to put things and space for everyone to enjoy the home,” Roche says. “Also, buyers looking for a graceful step down but still wanting something to be proud of.” Positive responses are reported by Kruse, indicating the concept and home designs resonate with
potential buyers. “The reception has been wonderful,” he says. “We’ve had more than 100 people signed up THE II HOME LOTS OF VINTAGE GROVE initially to learn about the project. We’re very close to inking our first few deals.” Any model can be built on any of the 11 lots, affording buyers significant flexibility. Attention to detail distinguishes this new community. “Every entry has a statement feature, whether a curved staircase or a balcony,” Roche says. Each home also features an owner’s entry. “When you walk in from the garage, everything you need should be at your fingertips,” Roche says. “There’s a countertop to set down your keys and an exit to the back door if you need to let an animal out.” Equal care was taken with the outdoor spaces. Each lot is at least half an acre and has a large, flat backyard—atypical for Wildwood—that could accommodate a pool. “From a land development perspective, they’re doing everything they can to maintain the foliage that surrounds the community and save the large trees. That’s unusual,” Roche says. “Everywhere our people have taken down large trees, they’re replacing them. We want our neighboring communities to feel we’re doing a good thing for them.”

1940s bungalow in university city GOALS OF THE HOMEOWNER >>
While the homeowner loved her 1940s bungalow, the quirky layout made modern living a challenge. For the new kitchen, the homeowner envisioned a super-pretty, fresh, clean look with a ‘beach chic’ aesthetic. She was inspired by a painting she had purchased from a local art fair, and the breezy, clear colors in the artwork became the inspiration for the color palette of the new kitchen. HOME RENOVATION by stephanie zeilenga
Renovations and additions add value to a home and can transform it into your dream space. So what kind of changes are on the most-requested list? Architects, designers and builders weigh in on what’s hot right now.
BATHROOM DESIGNED BY EMILY CASTLE OF CASTLE DESIGN
Keep it Simple
In the Kitchen
The kitchen is a perennially popular area of the home for additions, says Kent Higginbotham, president of Homes by Higginbotham. “Homeowners often make the kitchen larger or expand to an open concept,” he says. Quartz is becoming a more popular countertop option, because it is both durable and easy to clean, Kurtz adds. Another unique option
is concrete, says Mosby Building Arts architect Brian Young. And rather than a tiled backsplash, some homeowners opt for a large slab of marble, says Jay Eiler, designer with Castle Design. “This gives the kitchen a clean, dramatic look,” he says. Another kitchen trend: light-colored cabinets with inset doors that sit flush with the cabinet frames, paired with darker island and base cabinets, says Kurtz. The lighter upper cabinets lend an airy feel to the room, and the contrasting colors add visual interest, she says. And as always, a large kitchen island usually tops homeowners’ must-have lists, Higginbotham says. “It’s where everyone always ends up.”
In the Bathroom
Showers are the focal point for many homeowners renovating a bathroom. Kurtz has seen an uptick in lowering shower floors and getting rid of the curb so it is easier to maneuver for older adults. Some homeowners even remove the tub from the master bathroom. “As people age, they’re more interested in making sure bathrooms
For the past few years, homeowners have desired a simple, streamlined look, says Ellen Kurtz of boutique design firm Ellen Kurtz Interiors. “People are cleaning up and putting things away,” she says. “They don’t want as many accessories or items out.” Because they can add a light, clean feel to a room, grays, pastels and shades of white are eclipsing browns and earth tones as popular color choices, Kurtz adds. And this goes for furniture, too. “Sunbrella, which makes outdoor furniture, has a line that can be used indoors, so people can get that light look and not have to worry about durability.”

are functioning for them,” Kurtz says. Tile and stone are popular shower materials, Eiler says. “Homeowners want that ‘wow’ factor, and you can do that with tile and stone, which are beautiful and inexpensive options. And porcelain is big in flooring, too. It’s extremely resilient and a cost-effective solution.” In lieu of large, spa jet tubs, homeowners often opt for smaller, free-standing tubs. “They can be anything from traditional to transitional or contemporary,” Eiler says. “It really adds to the room and frees up space.” And one unique option for a bathroom vanity comes from Young, who recently completed a project that included an onyx vanity lit from within.
Going Green?
PHOTO COURTESY OF MOSBY BUILDING ARTS
Homeowners sometimes go the green route, but only when it makes sense for their budget. “People have good intentions, but when it comes to their pocketbook, that still rules,” Higginbotham says. “However, as the gap narrows in price, green materials get more popular.” “My clients aren’t going to do it if it’s too expensive or not a good product that’s going to last, so I try to help them navigate through the hype and figure out what their choices are,” Mosby’s Young says. “We kind of view our role as educating people. Sometimes they’ll want to use bamboo flooring, but if that’s coming from Southeast Asia or China, is that really the sustainable choice if you’re hauling it over here? Does it make more sense to get Missouri-grown oak?”
Long-term planning
Master planning, which involves a multiyear course of action for updating and improving a home, has been on the rise at Mosby Building Arts, says Young. “The homeowner may plan to do a full kitchen renovation this year, a master suite renovation on the first floor the following year and maybe a third project the year after that,” he says. “We look at it holistically, so we plan it all the first time and keep on track with the plan we’ve come up with.”
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP RIGHT: Many homeowners think of the free-standing tub as functional art. Sunbrella’s indoor furniture features light-colored fabrics that are durable and easily washed. An onyx vanity lit from within, used in a recent Mosby Building Arts project, adds drama to a powder room. High-end, eye-catching materials are preferred for remodeled bathrooms. Using different-colored kitchen cabinets is popular, as in this Ellen Kurtz-designed kitchen where white cabinets on top complement lower grey ones.

FIRST SALE It was in University City. I was the listing agent, and I found a buyer as well. I was so proud and thrilled! I knew I’d chosen the right career. BIGGEST SALE EVER Just under $2.5 million. SIGNATURE STYLE My marketing and advertising strategy is tailored to each client and property. But one aspect remains paramount and unchanged from client to client: the line of communication is always open and continuous. WHERE THE MONEY GOES The biggest misconception about agents is that we earn our money effortlessly. A large chunk of my personal commission is spent directly on marketing and advertising my clients’ homes. You have to invest in your client base. It’s the cost of doing business, but it’s worth it in the long run. Happy, satisfied customers grow your business much bigger and faster. THE AGONY OF DEFEAT My least-favorite part of the business is watching a buyer walk away at the last minute. BUMPS IN THE ROAD The best way to handle a difficult client is to remain positive, listen to their concerns, let them know I understand, and keep them informed every step of the way. BLUEPRINT It takes patience, perseverance and lots of planning to succeed in real estate. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS If your house has been on the market for a while and isn’t selling, it may be time to mix it up a bit. Advertising, marketing and communication are crucial in this business, and there are so many creative ways to promote a property. I believe in using technology to reach out to other agents and brokers, and also to buyers who may not be in the market to purchase. MY KIND OF TOWN I love the sports, the seasons and the diverse restaurant scene in St. Louis. The only thing I don’t like is the humidity! HOBBY I absolutely love to cook. My husband, a former chef, taught me everything I know. FAVORITE STRESS-BUSTER There’s nothing I enjoy more than being with my family. At the end of the day, they bring peace and harmony to the everteetering, fast-paced world of real estate.
T&S HOME
]HOMEWORK DEAR HOMEWORK,
I have lived in this 1904 home in the Central West End for about a decade, and it’s time for needed maintenance, including a new slate roof and copper gutters, exterior painting and possibly new high-wood trim. I would love a critique and suggestions for improving curb appeal. Sincerely, ———HISTORIC JEWEL NEEDS POLISHING
DEAR HISTORIC JEWEL NEEDS POLISHING,
I always open a reader’s submission before I read their comments. I like trying to identify what I see as the home’s weaknesses before I find out what the owner thinks. When I opened this submittal, I thought, “This house is beautiful—what could they want me to do with it?” This is a stunning piece of architecture. It is thoughtfully landscaped and beautifully maintained. I have some thoughts on the paint color issues you brought up. Pick colors by looking at the existing architecture for clues. In this case, we see a muted palette of buff and gray. I think the buff color used for the cornice and window trim is perfect and would leave it alone. Some of your other existing window and door frames are painted black, which lends an air of urbane sophistication to the property. I suggest changing the slate roof to have a balance of blue/gray, maroon and green/gray slates. This will give a more romantic feel and provide new colors to re-use elsewhere. Switching out the louvered shutters for a more Northern paneled look and then painting them the blue/gray color adds a degree of charm to the façade while still feeling appropriate. When I first drew this, I left all the shutters off. I thought it would look better; instead, it looked bland. But it did look right with the shutters on the second floor only, so that is what I show. Finally, I have painted out the window mullions on the dormers black. The lower windows have no divisions, so this helps the upper dormer divisions disappear. Hope that helps.

OAK ALLEY
by p. allen smith
Illuminate your style, create a surrounding that is uniquely yours.
historic homes & gardens >> Hello. My name is P. Allen Smith, and I’m a history addict. In particular, American history. So what does that have to do with a garden column? Well, early Americans were just as involved in their gardens as their contemporaries across the pond, especially the gentry. Visiting a historic site is a great way to see how our forebears lived—and gardened—and with the Fourth of July just having passed, it’s a good time to take a walk down memory lane.

I visited Oak Alley shortly before Hurricane Katrina, which mercifully spared the grand oak alley that had been planted in the 18th century. Twenty-eight oak trees drape over the entrance that leads to the majestic manor. I highly recommend visiting this historic site, whether you’re a history buff or you just enjoy the beauty of historic homes and gardens. Oak Alley is like stepping back into antebellum days. It’s a place where you can truly feel both the beauty and sorrow that is part of the past. OAKALLEYPLANTATION.COM

MIDDLETON PLACE
Another don’t-miss historic landmark is Charleston’s Middleton Place, the South Carolina home to America’s oldest landscaped gardens. The 65 acres of gardens were designed to have blooming flowers every month of the year! Camellias have bloomed for centuries during the winter season, and azaleas explode with color in the springtime.

AMERICAN QUEEN STEAMBOAT
If you really want to soak up the flavors of the South, the American Queen, the largest steamboat ever built, offers tours that include majestic homes. It’s the only authentic overnight paddlewheel in America, and the staterooms are filled with the Southern charm prevalent along the Mississippi River during an era when steamboat travel was common. Riverboat passengers will enjoy the seasonal cuisine of my friend Regina Charboneau, American Queen’s culinary director and native of Natchez, Miss. Y’all have a great July!
