[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] I don’t imagine anyone could possibly be unfazed by the miraculous summer weather we’ve had: In 40 years here, I can’t recall a single August day that felt as much like October as last week did. And in addition to the obvious delights of things like sleeping with the windows open and dining al fresco, there has been another big boon: spending more time out in St. Louis parks. Now that the heat-and-humidity-averse can get outdoors, I’ve sampled the local blues scene (in Lafayette Park), marveled at the strictures of Victoriana (in Tower Grove Park) and enjoyed 21st-century playgrounds (Forest, Tilles and Shaw parks). Did you know that efforts are well underway to launch The National Blues Museum in downtown St. Louis (which I learned during that free Lafayette Park concert)? Or that Tower Grove Park is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) extant ‘Victorian strolling park’—an amusingly prescribed mix of pavilions, statuary, Roman ruins (fake), lily ponds, formal plantings and bandstands flanked by marble busts? As for the playgrounds, they variously contain marimbas, surprise fountains, universal swings, and forts/platforms/clubhouses that the Little Rascals would gladly have traded Darla for. It’s as if Mother Nature wants to make it easier for us to rediscover our city. And what with the big 250th birthday coming up, it almost feels karmic. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

CANCER STRIKES ONE IN EVERY three women and one in every two men. The founders of Pedal the Cause, along with leading cancer researchers in St. Louis, don’t like those odds. That’s why they’re doing everything they can to change them. Established in 2010 by lymphoma survivor Bill Koman, Pedal the Cause is a two-day, community-wide cycling challenge with an ambitious goal: to find a cure for cancer. “The money raised supports innovative research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, work that’s not yet funded by the National Institutes of Health,” says executive director Jay Indovino. If you want big breakthroughs, you’ve got to fund high-risk work, he adds. “Today’s big ideas are tomorrow’s life-saving treatments, prevention strategies and cures.” Proceeds from last year’s cycling event are already funding cutting-edge studies on brain tumors and breast, blood, pancreatic, colorectal and skin cancers. Designed for riders of all ages and abilities, Pedal the Cause has something for everyone. This year’s challenge opens Oct. 5 at Soldiers’ Memorial with a day of celebration, including live entertainment, the mile-long Ameren Kids Challenge for ages 3 to 12, and Taste the Cause, featuring cuisine from Annie Gunn’s, Farmhaus, Brasserie by Niche, Sidney Street Cafe and Cleveland-Heath. “We’ll have some of the best food in town, free to all registered cyclists,” Indovino says. The pedal hits the metal on Oct. 6, ride day. Cyclists can choose from a spin tent or five course options, ranging from 15 to 100 miles, easy to challenging. New this year is the Savvis Century Ride, which runs from downtown to St. Albans and back again. “If you’re up for one of the toughest rides in the country, this will grab your attention,” Indovino says. “It’s a real beast, with more than 8,000 feet of gradual elevation and monster hills.” Multiple aid stations, 1,000 volunteers and plenty of police coverage make the event enjoyable and safe, he adds. Participation has grown since the inaugural ride in 2010, which raised $910,000 with 800 cyclists. “This year, we hope to register 2,500 riders and generate $3 million,” Indovino says. Presenting sponsor Edward Jones and funding partners such as ACW Alliance, Weber, Clayco and Michelob Ultra cover expenses, so every cent goes to fight cancer. “The money is more crucial,” he notes. “Federal funding for cancer research is shrinking, so public events like PTC fill the void.” The dollars go a long way: “As we develop promising data through seed research, we attract more funding from outside sources, like NIH. And all that money stays here.” Pedal the Cause is a high-energy experience. “Imagine thousands of cyclists, each with their own reason for being there,” Indovino says. “Maybe a loved one has cancer, or maybe they survived it themselves, or maybe they’re riding for one of the kids at Children’s Hospital. No matter why they’re riding, they share one goal—a world without cancer.”

After 20 years in the Big Easy, PAT KOGOS has moved back to her hometown of St. Louis—just in time for the publication of her first book. The novel, PRIORY, LOUISIANA, takes place at a New Orleans inn during Hurricane Katrina. Pat’s husband, Sam, owns Riverbend Restaurant & Bar in Soulard. They live with their two teenagers in Clayton.
What better way for an art museum to celebrate an anniversary than with an exhibition? CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM marks the 10th anniversary of its critically acclaimed building Sept. 6 through Dec. 29 with Place is the Space, a collaboration between the building’s architect, Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works Architecture, and Dominic Molon, CAM’s chief curator. Renowned neurosurgeon DR. RALPH DACEY JR. recently received the 2013 Distinguished Service Award from the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF NEUROLOGICAL SURGEONS. DR. ALEXANDER GARZA, former assistant secretary for health affairs and chief medical officer for the Department of Homeland Security, joins the faculty of SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY this fall. He will become associate dean for public health and associate professor of epidemiology at the university’s College for Public Health and Social Justice. Garza served as principal adviser on bioterrorism and health under Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.

While Life Media falls under the rubric of ‘custom media design and installation company,’ its most important service is peace of mind. Opened in early 2012 by partners Terrence Hampton and Christopher Schneithorst, Life Media installs whole-house video and audio, home automation systems, home theaters and remote surveillance, lighting and IT networks and fixes computer software and hardware problems. The company works with residential and commercial clients and has completed projects in some of St. Louis’ most prestigious residences. “We do the whole spectrum, of course, but some of our clients have the most incredible homes in St. Louis,” says Schneithorst. Currently, the company’s most popular service is full-house integration, Hampton says. “This combines your television, HVAC, security surveillance system, door locks, music, window shades or blinds, and lighting into one system that can be controlled with one device,” he explains. “The advantage of integration is control. You can put your whole house to sleep with the touch of a button, and you can control the temperature in different zones. If it’s too cold in one area, you can make it warmer only in that specific part of the house.” Among the latest innovations Life Media offers are products that allow the homeowner to remotely control the entire home system through a customizable application on an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Another popular service involves custom lighting. “One of the coolest things I’ve ever done is put sensors in the floor that automatically light a path to the bathroom when the homeowners step out of bed at night,” Hampton says. “In another house, we installed a system with various modes of lighting, including a

setting for movies with just a little bit of light so you’re not walking into the furniture,” Schneithorst adds. Life Media prides itself on highly customized work by thoroughly analyzing space constraints, acoustics and lighting needs and on leaving a clean, aesthetically pleasing space, Schneithorst says. And as the technology Life Media installs gets more sophisticated, so too do the means of camouflaging it. “Outdoor speakers can be disguised as rocks and there are TVs that look like painting —until the painting goes up to reveal the television,” Hampton says. “One client is currently installing a bathroom mirror with a 10-inch TV integrated into the glass.” As for that peace of mind, it comes not only from the company’s services, but also from the principals’ track records. Hampton, who has been in the audio/visual industry for more than two decades, interfaces with each project and completes walk-through assessments. “Past clients have followed him to Life Media from other companies,” Schneithorst says. “They absolutely love him.”

As garbage continues to smolder underground uncomfortably close to buried radioactive waste, the EPA has had its sleeves rolled up alongside the state’s Department of Natural Resources, while PRPs (read: Potentially Responsible Parties) sweat over remediation alternatives under consideration for the West Lake Landfill. In the early 1970s, Mallinckrodt illegally dumped leftovers from the company’s uranium-ore processing operations in the unlined Bridgeton landfill. Aerial site inspections have indicated the waste has not migrated, and groundwater testing continues on a regular schedule. The EPA is taking into account “the evaluation of risk associated with multiple disasters such as fire, tornado, and earthquake” at the Superfund site. Radioactivity levels there will not have decreased by the time our great-grandchildren have great-grandchildren. Comforting.

I admit to rubbing my eyes, twice when I saw that Asperger’s syndrome: The HighFunctioning Musical played at Clayton High School last week. The show was written by Dean Rosen, a clinical psychologist, with his son, Adam, and premiered in June. Rosen the elder says he got his education in musical theater from his extremely focused son, and the pair has been working together as a Rodgers and Hammerstein duo of sorts since the uniquely gifted young man was in high school in the 1990s. Dean brings his clinical experience and role as father of a boy at the high-functioning (natch) end of the autism spectrum. The lead role is based on Adam. Reportedly, Dad can’t sing a note. After getting a few hundred at the bank, he tried to ante up at a nearby Walgreens on Olive Boulevard, but was arrested in the parking lot—while in a cab. Reportedly he ‘implied’ he had a weapon. Authorities say he fraudulently attempted to obtain a controlled substance in April and later was arrested for DWI and other traffic charges. He could be in jail for a long time. This is a very sad story. Connecting the dots, it seems the man has reached a low point in a life controlled by drugs and alcohol.

The shuffle to accommodate approximately 2,200 students wishing to exit the troubled Normandy and Riverview Gardens school districts continued almost until the morning bell rang for the 2013-14 school year. U. City accepted fewer than 100 students from the two districts that are unaccredited by the state; families are responsible for transportation. A glance at the approximate number of transfers to a few districts: Brentwood, 35; Clayton, 51; Kirkwood, 143; Ladue, 94; Maplewood/Richmond Heights, 14; Parkway, 102; Webster Groves, 24. A state Supreme Court ruling in June cleared the way for the transfers, which had been simmering on a back burner for years. The state must cover the cost of tuition—plus transportation in some of the more distant districts, such as Francis Howell in St. Charles County, which accepted nearly 500 kids—should Normandy or Riverview Gardens ever be in default. Oh, the fantastic fabulousness of our fine, feathered friends. No matter how many times you’ve seen one, a hovering hummingbird still inspires awe. Every so often, a unique arrival manages to make its way through the umpteen dozen common sparrows crowding around the bird feeder for an out-the-window glimpse. But this recent flighty visitor to a Warson Woods backyard inspired a double take: A parakeet. Obviously a pet that had flown the coop, the little critter was safely apprehended. At this writing, the parakeet had not been returned to its owner … although who knows from whence or how far this budgie came. What next; a migration of macaws?

I’d want to ask myself: How much income would I need to maintain my standard of living just in case things didn’t work out? Always have a plan for dealing with a worst-case scenario. After that, I’d wonder: Can I realistically expect to increase my sales so much—without working myself half to death—to justify the added risk to my income? If I decided to proceed after taking these crucial factors into account, I would go to my sales manager, convey my enthusiasm for the product/service, and explain how confident I felt in my ability to maximize sales with the added incentive of a higher rate, commission-only pay arrangement. I would immediately follow up in support of this proposal by citing my notable sales record to date. Trading a steady paycheck for a commission-only position can be a perilous move, financially speaking. Just be sure you know how deep the water is before you decide to jump in. travel destination in the country. We spent some time in the village of Saugatuck, which is just as charming as Hyannis or Edgartown, although it may not have visitors as famous as the Kennedys, Clintons or Obamas. Nearby Oval Beach—one of the best in America—has lots of beautiful sand, a great view of the sunset, clean rest rooms and an inexpensive concession stand. In Saugatuck, we also hiked 282 steps up Mount Baldhead and picked lots of blueberries—both activities were more fun than they sound. ]
[ We made it to Traverse City in time for the TRAVERSE CITY FILM FESTIVAL.
The little town of 15,000 sells about 100,000 tickets for the annual event, started in 2005 by liberal filmmaker Michael Moore, a Michigan native. Ironically, the Founders Prize for best documentary this year went to Our Nixon, a somewhat sympathetic look at the Watergate scandal. ]

[ In Traverse City I discovered a new way to conduct a PUB CRAWL. Someone retrofitted a round table
with wheels, seven seats and pedals. One person steers while everyone pedals. Of course, the table is punctured with cup holders. ]
[ One of the most amazing sights I have ever seen has
to be Stop No. 9 on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive in the SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE near Traverse City. National Park Service guides told us not to miss this, even if it meant waiting a bit for a parking space. They were right. The location includes a 450-foot sand dune connecting a lapping Lake Michigan to an overlook. Visitors make their way up and down the steep mound for a unique, thrilling hike. Definitely put this on your bucket list! ]
[ Incidentally, we kept running into the Granite City-based clothing chain GLIK’S (owned by Claytonians). In addition to Saugatuck and Traverse City, Glik’s can be found in Cadillac, Charlevoix, Grand Haven, Holland and 10 other Michigan cities. ]
[ I have been to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Puget Sound, but I can’t say those waters are bluer than what we found in LELAND, MICH., a friendly and not-too-crowded lakeside community. I never knew the Midwest could be so beautiful. ]

FALL SPORTS PREVIEW by bill hester
Local teams will defend state titles and cultivate younger players this fall.
[ football ] The defense of state championships begins this month for several area high school teams. In some cases, it will be done with a familiar roster, but in most cases it will be attempted with an almost entirely new cast of characters. The latter is the case with the Kirkwood football team. The Pioneers captured their first ever state championship last year, winning the Class 5 title. But they did so with a senior-dominated squad. This will be a rebuilding year for Kirkwood, which finished with a 13-1 record last year with its only loss coming with an asterisk. The Pioneers’ lone defeat was against Webster Groves in the annual Turkey Day game, which was played with junior varsity players as Kirkwood climaxed its special season the next day with its 31-7 win in the Class 5 title game against Fort Osage at the Edward Jones Dome. The 2012 season also found John Burroughs making it to a title game. The Bombers fell in the Class 3 championship game to Maryville 35-22 and will have to play this season without standout running back Zeke Elliott. CBC, Ladue and Lafayette were all conference winners last year while Lafayette, De Smet Jesuit, Kirkwood, Parkway Central, Clayton, John Burroughs and Maplewood won district titles. Lafayette will be a team to watch this season. The Lancers won the Suburban West Conference championship for the second year in a row last year and finished with a 12-1 record. The Lancers will return four starters on both offense and defense. Senior running back Kevin Hampton returns after rushing for over 500 yards and eight touchdowns in 2012. He averaged almost seven yards a carry. Seniors Devin Hampton, Cole Dupont, Chris Raymond, Evan Scales, Trey Perez and Jalen Dansby are other key returning players for the Lancers. “We have a hard-working group of players who understand the traditions of our program and are eager to compete each week,” says Lafayette coach Boyd Manne. “We just want to improve daily in the classroom and on the playing field.”
[ soccer ] CBC returns 13 players, including a number of starters, from a Class 3 championship team in 2012. The Cadets defeated Metro Catholic Conference rival Chaminade 2-0 in the state championship game in Kansas City to finish the season with a 25-5-1 record. Chaminade, which actually won the conference, finished 25-3-2 overall. The Cadets return senior standouts Chris McArthur, Dave Geerling and Tommy Lee along with juniors Jake Meyerkord and Adam Smith. “We are once again looking forward to a challenging year with good results,” says CBC coach Terry Michler. “We want to work hard every day, improve throughout the year and be in the hunt at the end of the year.” Marquette, which was 8-0 in the Suburban West Conference, is another team that could be in the hunt with a senior-dominated squad led by Keith Grieshaber, Jake Peters, Nick Werner, Scott Prsha and Jack Harris. Vianney, Lafayette, Ladue, Parkway Central, John Burroughs and Principia also won district titles last year.
[ softball ] Teams from the Town & Style coverage area have great traditions in softball, but last year was a down one as no local team advanced to the Final Four in Springfield. They will try to change that this year. Webster Groves may have the best shot at making it to Springfield this season despite the graduation of standout pitcher/hitter Emma Buckles. The Stateswomen had an 18-game winning streak last season and finished 23-2 with both of its losses coming against Eureka. 22 |

Webster returns junior pitcher Madyson Stallcup, who has won 21 of her 23 decisions as a freshman and sophomore with an ERA under 2. Seniors Samantha Brown, Kate Wylie and Rachel Mehringer, and sophomore Joey Smith, are top returning players. Mehringer has a career on-base percentage of over 600, while Smith started all 25 games at shortstop as a freshman last year. “We have depth, balance and experience all over the field,” says Webster coach Bryan Gibson. “I don’t think we can expect 23-2 again, but the feeling among the group is that once we get all the pieces in place, we have the makings of another play-off team that can challenge for tournament and conference championships. The schedule is tough and we’ll have to play consistent, fundamentally sound softball to meet our goals.”
[ volleyball ] Local schools won the Class 3 and 4 championships last season with Lafayette having one of the most dominant seasons in state history. The Lancers finished the season with a 40-0 record, which culminated in a Class 4 title in Cape Girardeau. The Lancers appear loaded in a quest for another state title, with a handful of players who have already made college commitments. That list includes returning first-team all-state players Lily Johnson and Maggie Scott. Johnson, an outside hitter, will play at Missouri State, while Scott, a setter, will play at Oregon. Senior outside hitter Jackie Scott will attend Western Kentucky, senior middle blocker Brenna Griffey will play at McKendree, and junior defensive specialist Tori Roe has committed to Oral Roberts. “I’m very excited about the group we’ve got this year,” says Lancer coach Zach Young. “We lost a lot of seniors from last year’s state championship team but we have some very talented players WESTMINSTER VOLLEYBALL coming up from last year’s junior varsity team that we believe can be successful. Our goal is constant improvement and to be playing our best volleyball at the end of October.” Westminster Christian Academy also captured a state title last year. The Wildcats, who finished 29-6-1 overall, won the Class 3 championship. “Losing six seniors will be a big challenge for the young Westminster team,” says Wildcats coach Heather Kea. “The girls will need to be incredibly focused at every chance in the gym. I am hopeful they will develop quickly. I look forward to the progress and maturity these girls can gain.”
[ tennis ] Area teams swept both team championships in Springfield last season. St. Joseph’s Academy won its 15th state title in capturing the Class 2 championship, while Visitation won for the third year in a row in Class 1. Both teams did so with senior-dominated teams. St. Joe lost its top three players from the last three years (Taylor Revling, Grace Hyde and Ellie Bisig) but will keep junior starters Olivia Conway, Ellie Helton and Kaki McDaniel from their undefeated team. They also add talented freshmen Caroline Pozo and Ellie Burger. “We still have the foundation of those returning players and the lineup will be bolstered by the addition of two freshmen who look to be immediate impact

players,” says Angels coach Doug Smith. “Given St. Joe’s tennis history, we begin every season with the ultimate goal of winning another state championship. We always enjoy both the process and the challenge.” It will be a huge challenge this season for Visitation, which has dominated the state in Class 1 the last several years. They defeated Barstow 5-1 in last year’s title match to finish 19-1 (the only loss came against St. Joseph’s). The Vivettes were led by four seniors last year, including Class 1 state doubles champions Jocelyn Koester and Briana Menolascino. Juniors Cecily King and Stephanie Fortune are the only returning starters for Visitation this fall. Kirkwood’s Bridget Mayfield is one of several area players to watch in the individual portion of the state tournament. Mayfield finished second in singles in Class 2 as a freshman last year.
[ golf ] The area captured yet another state championship last season as Westminster Christian won the Class 1 golf championship. The Wildcats did so in dominant fashion, winning by more than 50 strokes over Villa Duchesne, which finished second. Westminster was led by Brooke Cusamano and Jordan Wolf, who finished first and second, respectively, at state.
[ cross country] Seven area boys’ teams finished in the top 10 at the state meet last year, including Class 4 state champion St. Louis University High. Lafayette (third in Class 4), Marquette (sixth in Class 4), Parkway West (eighth in Class 4), MICDS (fourth in Class 3), Clayton (fifth in Class 3) and John Burroughs (ninth in Class 3) were the other top 10 area teams. SLUH lost Matt Nicholson, who finished eighth individually, but return four of its top seven runners: senior Tom Rubio and juniors Shayn Jackson, Matthew Hennessy and Jack Sullivan. Seniors Mike Swan and John Esswein, whose seasons were cut short by injury last year, are back, as is sophomore Joe Butler. “Last season was a culmination of a group working hard together that ended with a state title,” says SLUH coach Joe Porter. “This year our team is focused on defending the title. This does not necessarily mean repeating as state champs, but about working hard and being tough.” Villa Duchesne was the top area team in girls’ cross country last season. The Saints finished fourth in Class 3 and have a solid nucleus returning. Sophomore

Hannah Deines was eighth individually at state. Senior Cece Stock was second in the conference tournament and junior Elise Marker won the Forest Park Invitational White Division. “We hope to improve on our second-place conference finish and to enjoy the journey through the season that leads to the state meet,” says Villa coach Steve Miller. Lafayette, Nerinx Hall and Marquette each had top-eight team finishes last year in Class 4. Nerinx is led by junior Sophia Racette, who finished third in state last year. Lafayette’s Sarah Nicholson finished sixth individually as a freshman in 2012.

“We are in a good news/bad news situation this fall,” says Westminster coach Steve Bradley. “The bad news is that we lost three of our five golfers from last year’s champion team. The good news is that we have two returning (Megan McDaniel and McKenna Montgomery). We also have golfers who would have been starters on most teams but couldn’t break through last year due to the outstanding players we had.” Senior captain Claire Kopsky, who finished in the top 10 in the conference tournament, and senior Jessica Dreesbeimdieke from South Africa should both contribute this season. Lafayette looks for another successful season after finishing second in Class 2 last season.
Area teams Nerinx Hall, MICDS and Villa Duchesne all have something extra to play for this fall after falling just short last year. Those three teams joined Cor Jesu for the Final Four in the Midwest Field Hockey Tournament in Fenton, but it was the Chargers who came out on top in the hotly contested tournament. Cor Jesu defeated Nerinx Hall 3-2 in the title game after needing double overtime to defeat MICDS 2-1 in the semifinals. Villa also fell in overtime in its semifinal contest against Nerinx Hall, 3-2. Nerinx, which was the second seed in the tournament behind Cor Jesu, finished the season with an impressive 22-4 record.

St. Louis is about to get a little sweeter with a new Russell Stover store announced for 11697 Manchester Road, the previous location of Ahner’s Garden & Gifts. The store, opening this fall, will sell homemade candies, baked goods, fudge, ice cream, Jelly Belly jelly beans and exclusive flavor boxes. Customers also will be able to purchase beverages at the store’s espresso bar.
HOME DESIGN HEAVEN
West Elm, the popular home goods and design store, opened its first Missouri location at the St. Louis Galleria in July. The 8,385-square-foot store is partnering with Etsy to showcase and sell products from eight local artists. The store also features a design lab, where customers can receive tips on decorating, developing a mood board and making a floor plan, as well get hints on local design sources, all free of charge.

THE STARS WILL SHINE BRIGHT illuminating the St. Louis County Library Foundation’s annual gala Sept. 21; proceeds benefit early childhood literacy. The library (located on Lindbergh Boulevard) will be transformed into the Roaring ’20s, as this year will have a theme: The Great Gatsby. Fashion took a dramatic turn in the 1920s, as hemlines rose above the knee, waistlines dropped below the hips and silhouettes were loose in order to enjoy dancing at parties. So, what to wear? The vintage look is reminiscent of this era. What comes to mind? Art Deco-inspired flapper dresses embellished with sequins and fur. Cocktail attire is also an option if you don’t want to wear a ’20s silhouette. Consider choosing accessories that can accent a modern look easily by adding a cloche hat, strands of lustrous pearls, brilliant gems and jewels, feathers, headdresses, plus a retro ‘bob’ hairstyle and red lacquer lips and nails. Men can look 1920s’ dapper by wearing any of these items: a three-piece suit, suspenders, bow tie/pocket-square handkerchief combination, collar pin, pocket watch and a broad-rimmed fedora. Grooming suggestions? A slicked-back haircut and a moustache.
Retail co-up The Collective expanded with a second store at Chesterfield’s Taubman Prestige Outlets, which opened Aug. 2. The original location is in downtown St. Louis in the MX development. The concept of The Collective’s Chesterfield location, boutiques within a boutique, is the same as at the downtown store, but will feature past season’s items at a discounted price.

[ the routine ] WARM UP I first get my body warm by wearing sweatpants or legwarmers and do some cardio. ROUTINE I stretch and do my exercises almost every day. The whole routine takes 10 to 20 minutes. I stretch with some splits and work on my back flexibility. I also complete some back exercises and work on my turnout. One of the stretches for this is the frog, where I lie face-down on the ground with the bottoms of my feet pressed together. This stretches my hip flexors. I also do toe pushups, where I roll on the top of my feet. I finish with ankle exercises and ab workouts, incorporating some Pilates movements. COOL DOWN To cool down I lie on the floor and let my whole body rest for a few minutes.

AT ONLY 11 YEARS OLD, Maddie Sass ballet, in part because it is the most disciplined
possesses an extraordinary amount of poise. But that’s what you’d expect for a girl so passionate about ballet. She is a sixth grader at Parkway Northeast and practices dance at DaySpring School of the Arts—and anywhere else she can. “I practice everywhere,” says Maddie. “Sometimes I practice at friends’ houses if they have really open rooms. Basically, I just dance where I can.” Maddie started dancing when she was 9. Before that, she participated in DaySpring’s musical theater programs and decided she wanted to try ballet when she saw dancers perform. And she’s been in love with it ever since. “I like being able to express myself with dance and learning how to control my muscles,” she says. “I like ballet because it’s the center of dance. When you learn ballet, you can do other types of dance more easily because the moves are all based on ballet.” Enthusiasm alone is not enough to succeed in
dance form, as Maddie points out. “Posture is hard, but it’s getting easier,” she says. “Arms also are hard because you have to keep your elbows above your wrists. You have to mentally prepare yourself an hour before class. I read or do puzzles because they help me focus.” In November, Maddie will be starring in DaySpring’s presentation of Pinocchio. “I was with my friends when I found out I got the part and we were all jumping up and down,” she says. To prepare for the show, she attends weekly practices. Besides improving her ballet, the practice has helped her form closer relationships with fellow dancers and teachers. Maddie’s immediate goal is to dance en pointe. To prepare, she routinely does toe pushups to strengthen her foot and is enrolled in a prepointe class. And her plans extend even further into the future to college, where she hopes to dance and participate in musical theater.

TO-SCHOOL PARENT [ BACKHEALTH TRAP WOMEN CAN] HAVE IT ALL! by mary konroy
by dr. tim jordan SINCE THE EARLY DAYS of the women’s liberation movement, girls and women have been inundated with messages about empowerment. The rallying cry has been, “You can have it all!” Fifty years later, that theme has lost some of its luster. Girls are hearing a new refrain from eminent women like Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg: “Don’t lean back, lean in. Put your foot on that gas pedal and keep it there until the day you have to make a decision, and then make a decision. That’s the only way, when that day comes, you’ll even have a decision to make.” ‘Leaning in’, or pushing forward in your career path sounds like a good idea, but I have some reservations about this approach to life. And much of my concern stems from hearing young women in their 20s and 30s speak about how empty and unfulfilled they are. Ever since they were toddlers, girls have been expected to be top-notch at everything they attempt. Girls in my camps tell me about the pressures they feel to be perfect at everything: straight As, national championship-caliber select sports teams, padded college transcripts, entry into top-tier universities—with a scholarship in hand. Girls also feel like they have to be thin and gorgeous and noticed by the hottest guys. There is pressure, too, to be included in the most popular friend groups and well-liked by their teachers and coaches. So they graduate from college and pursue a career with the drive to climb quickly to the top of the ladder. And many young women have found good jobs in big cities, but as they grow into their late 20s and beyond, they often experience a feeling of emptiness: Is this all there is to life? They’ve put off marriage and/or childbearing and resigned themselves to thrills like happy hours and hooking up to try to satisfy themselves. So, can women have it all? I say yes, but only if every woman consciously defines what ‘having it all’ means for her. No matter what path you choose, if you consciously choose what’s right for you, with the balance that you want, then you do have it all. But you’ll have to do some work to be sure the choices are genuinely yours, and that you’re not just falling in line with what the culture and other women say you ‘should’ do. That would be much easier if we could all accept each others’ choices instead of passing judgment on choices that are different from ours—a kind of cease-fire between polarized groups like working moms and stay-at-home moms. I encourage girls and women at all stages of life to ‘lean back’ before they lean in. Girls need times of quiet solitude for reflection and soul-searching. You may be ready for your kids to return to school—but are they? In this edition, local physicians, orthodontists and other health experts discuss braces, backpacks, healthy lunches, ADHD, sports injuries and heat-related illnesses that can sideline your athlete.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a medical diagnosis. Teachers or school counselors can’t diagnose it but may suspect it. You need to see a doctor. Physicians look for a history of problems that occur in and out of the classroom. There are also standardized tests—checklists, really—that children, parents or teachers can fill out. The tests rate a child’s impulsivity, disorganization, inattention, distractibility and hyperactivity. Personal interviews are also important. As educational consultants, we start the evaluation by talking to the child’s parents to identify behaviors. We meet and observe the child, review test results and write a report. If we suspect ADHD, we encourage a visit to the family pediatrician, a neurologist or a psychiatrist. ADHD has little to do with cognitive ability. Kids with ADHD can be really bright and score high on tests but fail the course. They don’t have the ability to sustain attention. It’s best to get diagnosed early to establish routines. If your child has ADHD, meet with their teacher before school starts to discuss strategies. Support is what kids with ADHD need most. They need a mentor.

Most kids with ADHD are treated successfully with stimulant medications but some experience side effects, such as increased anxiety or the inability to gain weight. That’s when their parents seek our help. We use electroencephalogram (EEG) neurofeedback. It’s an effective, research-based therapy for treating ADHD. It’s also a safe alternative to drugs. The American Academy of Pediatrics approved neurofeedback as a Level 1 or ‘best-support’ treatment for kids with ADHD last year. Neurofeedback trains children with ADHD how to focus and control their frontal lobe, which houses the brain’s executive control center. It’s the area of the brain responsible for impulse control, and the ability to tend to tasks and to organize. EEG sensors are placed on the surface of the child’s scalp and their brain wave activity is recorded. The child watches a movie or game while a clinician simultaneously monitors their frontal lobe activity. The movie or game becomes brighter when the child pays attention. It becomes darker when they become distracted. We run an in-office test before treatment to identify the child’s attention scales and then conduct another one after 40 sessions. Each session lasts about 30 minutes.
smart backpacks // “A backpack on wheels is best,” says orthopedic surgeon DR. DONALD BASSMAN OF BASSMAN ORTHOPEDICS. “You see them in offices. You see them in hospitals. You see them at airports. Unfortunately, they haven’t caught on in schools yet.” Until the rolling backpack becomes an accepted accessory, Bassman recommends the double-strapped version. “You want a half-inch to an inch of padding in the straps over the shoulders and you also want a padded back,” he says. “Elementary school children through 5th grade should carry no more than 10 to 15 pounds in their backpacks. Junior-high students should carry no more than 20 pounds, and high school students should max out at 25 pounds.”

THE ORTHOPEDIC CENTER OF ST. LOUIS Heat illnesses are a cause for concern as kids head back to school, sports and gym class, especially if they’ve been inactive over the summer. They’re preventable, even though we live in an area that’s hot and humid. Student athletes need to become acclimated to heat and activity gradually. That’s what the pro athletes I work with do. You don’t see the St. Louis Cardinals engaging in full games when training camp begins. They do small drills, increase their activity and stay hydrated. Hydration starts the night before the event and continues throughout the practice or game. Heat cramps are not a big deal. A coach or trainer will try to stretch the cramped muscle. Heat exhaustion is more troubling, and heat stroke is a medical emergency. To prevent exhaustion and heat stroke, get your student acclimated to heat. Have him or her play or practice early in the day and evening. Make them wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes and keep them hydrated.

Laser therapy is the go-to treatment for many sports injuries. Top athletes and professional teams use it to treat soft-tissue injuries. Laser therapy decreases pain, promotes healing and allows athletes, young and old, to return to the field or court sooner. We use the LightForce Pro Laser. It’s a cold laser developed for sports injuries. We use it on sprains, strains, pulled muscles, hamstring injuries and meniscal tears. The laser penetrates the injured tissues, pumps them with energy and causes cells within the tissues to regenerate faster. LightForce is also excellent for pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation. Treatment usually lasts five to 10 minutes. Often patients see an immediate increase in their range of motion and a decrease in pain after their first session. After five to 10 treatments, patients tend to see a significant improvement in symptoms. Treatments are scheduled according to the severity of the injury, the athlete’s goal and how quickly he/she wants to return to their sport of choice. Some people may need more sessions.

nutritious lunches // “Flip the food pyramid,” says Rob Elder of Metro (and Nutritional Wellness) Chiropractic Centre. “We eat too much grain. Let your child help make their lunch and give them healthy choices.” Elder is a chiropractor trained in nutritional analysis and a father of three kids, ages 17, 13 and 6. Health is his bag, so to speak, and he’s packed lots of lunches for school. Fruit, protein, a healthy carb, such as sprouted grain or flourless bread, a small, low-sugar dessert and bottle of plain water are what you’ll find in his sack lunches “I’ll pack a low-sugar fruit such as blackberries, blueberries or apples,” he says. “My kids like peanut butter, so that’s their protein.” He avoids most pre-packaged foods, those with dyes and even ‘whole grain’ bread. “It’s a marketing ploy,” he says. “It’s not really healthy. Wheat has been genetically modified.” And if your child must have fruit juice, dilute it with water. “There’s a lot of sugar in fruit juice,” he notes. For snacks, Elder recommends yogurts in fun tubes and mini-sized cookies made from evaporated cane juice. Raw vegetables, such as broccoli and grape tomatoes, are always good. And nothing beats setting a good example: “It’s easier to get kids to eat healthy if their parents do.”

LEVENS ORTHODONTICS There are early clues that suggest a child might need braces. If a baby tooth falls out and the permanent tooth doesn’t erupt in a few months, there may be a problem with crowding or the direction of the tooth to come. If a baby tooth falls out on one side and its exact match on the other side doesn’t, that, too, can suggest a lack of space. An overbite or an underbite involving just one tooth can also indicate a looming problem. Likewise a crossbite, which occurs when the top teeth sit on the inside of the lower teeth, can be a red flag. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontia exam at age 7. I recommend it no earlier than 8 years of age. By then, the first adult molars and all eight incisors have erupted. We can also see if the bite is aligned. If you’re concerned about whether your child may need braces, take him or her to an orthodontist. Most orthodontists don’t charge for consultations, and it’s a great way to get free and valuable information now.

MASTORAKOS ORTHODONTIC ASSOCIATES Compliance is one of the biggest issues with kids who wear dental braces. They must cooperate on an oral hygiene level. They must avoid certain foods and they must use their orthodontic appliances as directed. Orthodontists have gotten smarter to help kids stay compliant and on track with treatment. We’ve taken over some of their responsibilities. For example, some ‘bite’ appliances now attach directly to the braces, eliminating the need for elastics or rubber bands, which have to be changed daily. Forsus is such an appliance. It’s a small, spring-loaded device that clips on braces to move the jaws and teeth into alignment. Because it’s worn 24/7, outcomes are more predictable. Cavities and gum issues are always a concern, especially in kids with braces. We sell special mouthwashes and oral rinses that are used along with regular tooth brushing and flossing. These are helpful for younger patients who haven’t perfected their tooth-brushing abilities. We can achieve some amazing results with orthodontics, but it requires a partnership. The orthodontist supplies the means and the parents supply the reinforcement.

by stephanie zeilenga THE NEW HOT THING ISN’T NEW AT ALL. In fact, it’s vintage. And St. Louis, although far from East Coast/West Coast arbiters of style, has some old-school gems of its own, according to vintage guru Kevin Glazer. And if anyone should know, it’s Glazer. He runs the Clayton-based ad agency, Glance Creative, which draws inspiration from vintage typography. Glazer also is a connoisseur of vintage watches, produces vintageinspired art, and owns Vintage Highways, which produces clothing with vintage-inspired prints. So why vintage and why now? With recent economic woes, people are spending money more carefully, says Glazer. This leads to a greater emphasis on quality, which vintage, especially vintage jewelry, delivers. One of the premier spots to find vintage treasures is Timekeepers. The store’s owners came to St. Louis from Eastern Europe in 1979 and can claim four generations of expertise in jewelry and timepieces. “Timekeepers has so many treasures that are someday going to be worth a lot more,” says Glazer. “They have engagement rings from the ’30s and ’40s with intricate filigree settings and amazing men’s watches. If you had someone make these today you could never afford EDWARD, SHAWN, SARAH AND ELLA OF TIMEKEEPERS it because no one makes PHOTO BY KEVIN GLAZER jewelry like that anymore.” Vintage, though, is also about the pursuit of the unique. That’s one of the reasons Andy Warhol, who used silkscreen printing techniques that rendered no two prints identical, is experiencing a surge in popularity. Art enthusiasts can get a sense of this without leaving the city, at the new Gallery 618. It features some of Warhol’s works and is one of the only galleries in the country specializing in pop and urban contemporary art. “Warhol did hundreds of prints of Marilyn Monroe but each is different because each is silk screened,” says Glazer. “That’s why Warhols are going to keep increasing in value.” Yet another trend is using vintage items to make something new or finding inspiration from vintage aesthetics. Some Timekeepers customers, for example, incorporate vintage items into new pieces. “People maybe bring in their grandmother’s antique piece and make it current by putting it in a setting that’s more modern,” says Glazer. The two Clayton shops are collaborating on a vintage giveaway. Participants need to download the Spin Streak app to their cell phones and visit the Clayton Timekeepers at 17 N. Meramec Ave., where a Warhol print donated by Gallery 618 is on display. When they scan the QR code on the artwork, they’ll find out if they are a winner. ASIAN CUISINE: DISH NO. 43, PLEASE Do you like Chicken Chow Mein or Ga Xao Cai Lan? No worries. The different cooking methods and exotic spices of Asian cuisine are opening up a completely new flavor profile for oenophiles. So how do we pair wine with Asian dishes we can barely pronounce?
FLAVORS, FLAVORS AND FLAVORS Do not panic, I have good news for everybody who would like to pair wine with their favorite Asian dishes. Besides sake and Sapporo, there are plenty of white and red wine options from around the world to lighten your next Asian dinner. The cuisine is too diverse to pigeonhole, so we need to break it down. Each Asian country and region has its own styles and historical methods, but there is also one important characteristic in common: big flavors.
FRUITY, LIGHT AND A HINT OF SWEET Wine lovers should know that the best solutions for flavorful dishes are fruity and refreshing wines. A perfect match, for example, is an off-dry German Riesling. Light in body, fruity aromatics, fresh acidity and a hint of sweetness are the key descriptive words here. A Riesling pairs beautifully with the sweet and sour flavors of Chinese cuisine, but also very well with the mild or hot spice rack of Korean, Thai, Japanese or Indian palettes. But it’s not only the German Rieslings that make perfect pairing partners. Try a pinot grigio or pinot blanc from Oregon with your next chicken Szechuan, or a young gewuerztraminer from the Alsace region when you enjoy an Indian meal. Austria produces a gruener veltliner, which is very similar in taste and flavor to a Riesling. That works too! If you prefer red, pick a pinot noir from Sonoma County, Oregon or even New Zealand. Fruit forward, silky and well balanced are the ideal criteria. Avoid wines that are very oaky or high on alcohol, two strong components that definitely do not pair well with Asian food. Sushi is the only Asian dish with which I prefer to stay traditional: sake is the ultimate partner, walking that long, historical road together. WORLD CHESS HALL OF FAME PLAYS A WINNING GAME BY EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FASHION AND CHESS IT’S GOOD TO BE THE QUEEN. Sure, there have been a few beheadings, sassy step-daughters and revolting peasants along the way. But for the most part, being queen gives you a guaranteed place of honor in history, art museums and fairy tales—and on chessboards. “In the game of chess, the queen can do whatever she wants,” says London-based fashion curator Sofia Hedman. “She reigns as the most powerful, unpredictable piece, embodying tradition while at the same time redefining or breaking the rules established by the patriarchal system.” That’s why Hedman couldn’t resist when she was approached last year by Susan Barrett, director of the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis, to curate A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes, Fashion & Chess. The exhibition, which explores how images of queens, both historical and fictional, have inspired fashion designers, opens Oct. 19 and runs through April 18 at WCHOF on Maryland Avenue. The show features rare pieces from one of the world’s largest private collections of the late Alexander McQueen’s work, as well as

creations by 20 other innovative designers, including Gucci, Maison Martin Margiela and Hussein Chalayan. “I’ve been enraptured by the relationship between chess, art and fashion since Alexander McQueen’s spring 2005 fashion show, It’s Only a Game,” Barrett recalls. Instead of the usual runway presentation, the late designer projected a giant chess board onto the stage and dressed all the models as high-fashion game pieces. “That’s when it struck me that chess, which has such a dry, cerebral image, has a creative side as well, with strong ties to the artistic process,” she says. “Both pursuits require intense concentration and much trial and error, and neither presents a clear road map for success beyond the basic raw materials.” A Queen Within began coming together a couple of years ago. “I convinced some art collectors I knew to let me help them gather some high-end McQueen items for their collections,” Barrett says. “In turn, they agreed to let me exhibit them at WCHOF.” As she and assistant curator Kelly Peck brainstormed about

the connections between chess and fashion, they narrowed their focus on the archetype of queen, since many of McQueen’s garments contained direct references to royalty. Then Valerie Steele, museum director at Fashion Institute of Technology, introduced Barrett to Hedman, who’d worked on the archives for McQueen’s Savage Beauty retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “Sonia brought in many emerging designers who exemplify the queen’s rebellious, risk-taking spirit, and the show really started to snowball,” Barrett says. The exhibition previewed last spring at Christie’s in New York City. Highlights included an Alexander McQueen cocktail dress emblazoned with an image of his muse, Isabella Blow, Hussein Chalayan’s iconic bubble dress, Iris van Herpen’s snake dress, and Serena Gili’s plexiglass queen skirt. These pieces and other rare items are featured in the St. Louis show, along with a broad range of related events, including an exhibit of photographs from Anne Deniau’s recent book on McQueen, Love Looks Not With the Eyes, as well as
an educational program that encourages girls to play chess. The 3,200-square-foot exhibition will cover two floors at WCHOF in the Central West End. “The show is divided into nine sections, each exploring Carl Jung’s nine personas of the queen archetype: mother figure, enchantress, sage, magician, explorer, orphan, Mother Earth, ruler and heroine,” Hedman says. Presenting sponsor for the exhibition is Wells Fargo Advisors; other sponsors include Christie’s, Swarovski, Saks Fith Avenue, and Town & Style. A Queen’s Gala, co-chaired by Jimmy Jamieson and Jan Goldstein, is slated for Oct. 18 at Saks Fifth Avenue. Talks are currently underway with several museums for an exhibition tour, Barrett notes. She hopes the show helps make chess more popular with a wider audience. “Some players approach it mathematically, but every chess game tells a richly symbolic story,” she says. “The story is there, if you just take time to look. A Queen Within is the spark that lights the way.”

CHARLIE GITTO’S is one of the Hill’s legendary fine dining spots. Now celebrating its 32nd anniversary, it recently got a partial makeover, but don’t worry, it still retains the nostalgic Rat Pack vibe that adds to its authentic Italian charm. A steady clientele dines on spiedini and saltimbocca while Sinatra plays in the background. And although the bar room (where diners enter) got most of the redo attention—check out the red onyx bar—my favorite spot here is the patio, with its twinkle lights, umbrellas and shade trees. It’s a little oasis amid one of St. Louis’ most iconic areas, a mix of Italian businesses, St. Ambrose church and parish school, and trim little bungalows. As for the menu, it’s traditional Italian, heavy on pastas and veal. My favorites were a couple of pasta dishes we sampled: Pasta con Vongole ($18) and Seafood Pasta
Suzanne ($24). The first has a flavor-packed clam sauce that balances clams, butter, garlic, onions and parsley in a broth-y bowl of pasta. The other has a creamy and peppery seafood sauce filled with shrimp, fish and clams. Called ‘three-pepper sauce,’ it includes red pepper flakes and a light cream that enhances the seafood flavors. I ordered a Gitto’s specialty, Veal Nunzio ($28), and while the meat was pounded thin and attractively browned, the layer of fontina on top was too heavy for my taste and the sauce of butter and lemon, which I pictured as a drizzle, was a lake. I say, why not let the meat and the expertise of its preparation be the main attractions? And expertise, there is clearly plenty of. My side dishes—roasted potatoes and sautéed haricots verts— were stellar. The beans were tossed with toasted sliced almonds and crisp-sauteed onions; the potatoes were

crusty and delicious. And a four-cheese (parmesan, fontina, mozzarella, gorgonzola) pizza ($12) was well done, with crisp crust and the cheeses in good proportion to each other. A Caprese salad ($8), that inspired combination of beefsteak tomatoes with jumbo slices of mozzarella, shredded basil and slivers of red onion was irreproachable, as was the Caesar Salad ($7) with its classic anchovy dressing and ribbons of parmigiano reggiano. The dessert menu has jumbo wedges of chocolate cake, enticing squares of tiramisu and rich crème brulee, our pick. Alas, it fell short: someone in the kitchen was a little too aggressive with the torch, burning the ‘brulee,’ which gave it a bitter charred flavor. I expected (no, wanted) everything to be perfect, but that’s not realistic, even for a legend like Charlie Gitto’s on the Hill.

FRONT] &CENTER by bob wilcox THE MUNY WOUND UP ITS SUMMER SEASON with a brilliantly staged production of one of the greatest pieces of musical theater, West Side Story. For me, Arthur Laurents’ book, Leonard Bernstein’s music, Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics and Jerome Robbins’ choreography tell the story of star-crossed young lovers better than Shakespeare does. The Bard makes the tragic ending depend on the accident of a quarantine (which was why Friar John couldn’t deliver the letter telling Romeo that Juliet’s ‘death’ was temporary); the Broadway version grows from the nature of the characters. And our indoor musical theater, Stages St. Louis, has just ended its second production of the summer, much lighter than West Side Story. Legally Blonde will never be confused with great art or profound insights, but it was smartly done fun, and we should all enjoy a little cotton candy now and then. But rather than taking a breather before the fall season begins, St. Louis theater is bringing us more serious work. The Bard himself is back in St. Louis Shakespeare’s production of Two Noble Kinsmen, about two cousins in Theseus’ Athens who fall in love with the same woman. Robin Weatherall, formerly of the Royal Shakespeare Company, directs. Union Avenue Opera is doing the second part of Richard Wagner’s masterpiece Ring cycle, Die Walküre. As they did last year with Das Rheingold, they wisely have chosen to use the adaptation by the contemporary composer Jonathan Dove, reducing the length from five to three hours. It generally works well. Donald Margulies is one of our leading American playwrights, and after the glowing reviews for the New York production, and given my liking for his other plays, I’ve been eager to see his Time Stands Still at Insight Theatre Company. It’s

about a photojournalist who has come home to Brooklyn to recover from wounds suffered while covering the Iraq war. She’s joined by her boyfriend, who also was reporting in Iraq and feels guilty for leaving her alone there. As usual, Insight, based at the intimate theater on the campus of Nerinx Hall High School, features some of the best local talent—in this case, Jenni Ryan, Chad Morris, Julia Crump and Jerry Vogel, with John Contini directing. Max & Louie Productions opens Nicky Silver’s The Lyons this weekend in the studio theater at COCA in University City. It’s a black comedy in the dysfunctional family tradition of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and August: Osage County. Again, the cast features fine local actors, including Judi Mann, Bobby Miller, Meghan Maguire, Charlie Barron, Julie Layton and Aaron Orion Baker, directed by Wayne Salomon. The new season begins after Labor Day with a couple of classic musicals, My Fair Lady at Stages St. Louis and Cabaret at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Not so familiar to most of us is the musical Parade, with book by Alfred Uhry and music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. Hardly a musical comedy, it’s grounded historically in a horrible antisemitic lynching in Georgia 100 years ago. A relatively new company, R-S Theatrics, will perform it at the Ivory Theatre in Carondolet. A sometimes kinder view of American life at that time appears in Our Town. Insight Theatre Company returns with this Thornton Wilder classic and with Joneal Joplin—who else?—as the Stage Manager. We’ve all seen it a dozen times, but I still get misty-eyed when Emily goes back to her childhood.

The better ones obviously make an effort to entertain the big folks, too. Like naming the aircraft carrier where our hero, Dusty Crophopper, lands for emergency fuel ‘the USS Flysenhower.’ Or like what happens when Dusty, completing a particularly harrowing leg of his ‘round-the-world’ aerial race, lands in Tibet and asks, Am I in the right place? The cartoon monks answer, It is a question asked by many. Of course, these lines ‘fly’ way over the heads of tikes but make those 91 minutes a lot more palatable for their minders. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? WHILE THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS ARE HAVING A GREAT SEASON, it was in jeopardy early in the year when closer Jason Motte was ruled out for the season, making the bullpen very shaky. Then Edward Mujica, the man originally acquired from the Miami Marlins to be the seventh-inning guy, stepped in and became not only the closer, but the glue solidifying the bullpen. Town & Style spoke with Mujica recently to get to know a little bit more about him.

When he told me, “You’re going to be the closer and we’re going to be using you in save situations,” that was good for me. The best thing is confidence and communication with the manager. Q. WHAT WAS IT LIKE FOR YOU LAST YEAR WHEN YOU HEARD ON THE TRADE DEADLINE DAY YOU WERE TRADED TO ST. LOUIS? A. I didn’t even know I was going to be traded. The first thing that came to mind was having to leave my family (wife Erika) and my daughter (Brianna), who was like 20 days old at the time. It was crazy, but you know it’s part of the business. Q. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE CITY OF ST. LOUIS? A. I think the fans are unbelievable. They come every night and support us. Q. WHERE DO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY LIVE? A. We live in Miami in the offseason but here in St. Louis we rent a place downtown. Q. WHO WAS YOUR IDOL GROWING UP? A. When I was growing up in Venezuela I followed Johan Santana and Freddy Garcia. They were two of the
best pitchers in baseball.
Q. FAVORITE SPORT OTHER THAN BASEBALL? A. I’m a 100-percent soccer guy. I like to watch games from the Spanish league (La Liga), and especially when
they play the World Cup.
Q. HOW DOES ST. LOUIS COMPARE TO OTHER CITIES THAT YOU PLAY IN? A. If you go the mall here or go to the zoo, people recognize you and talk to you and say things like, “Hey
Mujica, nice job,” and that’s really unbelievable.
Q. WHAT WOULD FANS BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU? A. Some guys on the team think I’m very superstitious. I just go into the back room and come out and make

five or six years ago. The only sound heard for miles around was the hollow pop of the bubble bursting. After years of spectacularly high prices and buyers eager and able to pay them, developers, agents, buyers and sellers took a step back. Prices fell, but inventory languished. Many sellers took their homes off the market rather than sell for considerably less than they believed their property was worth. But signs of renewed life are everywhere. “So far this year, we’re putting about 15 percent more of our properties under contract than we did last year—and 2012 was a good year!” says Kathy Beilein, broker/manager at Laura McCarthy Real Estate. “Asking prices have gradually been on the rise for more than a year now; sales have been rising since 2011.” Nationally, the market is halfway back to where it was before the bubble burst. “Locally, at least in the central corridor, our agents are actually doing a little better than that,” she says. What’s behind the surge? “Inventory is about one-third lower than it was last year, so demand is up,” Beilein says. “Lower supply and higher demand mean rising home prices, especially in the high-end, central corridor neighborhoods our agents focus on. And sellers are bringing properties to the market that look good and are priced

right.” That’s great news for home owners: “Most of our properties are selling within 5 percent of their original asking price,” she adds. “During one recent week, we had four $1 million-plus sales!” Established in 1944, Laura McCarthy has offices in Clayton and Town & Country. “Our agents are seasoned experts in every segment of the market, with a special focus on luxury homes,” Beilein explains. When the market was soft, McCarthy agents prevailed. “If there’s not a lot of activity, you have to create it by staying client-focused, well-connected, proactive and results-driven,” Beilein says. “Even before the market improved, 80 percent of our listings sold at 95 percent or more of their original asking price.” Beilein doesn’t think the recent uptick is a fluke. “Time will tell, but we’re starting to see more new construction,” she says. Another good sign? The upturn has been gradual. Midyear sales figures over the last six years tell the tale: “By June 2007 we had 136 properties under contract; in 2009, 61—that’s where the market reset,” Beilein explains. “Beginning in 2010, though, it’s been an upward climb: from 63 properties in 2010 to 70 the following year, 80 in 2012, and 95 this past June.” Growth has been slow but steady—“and that’s just the way you want it.”

Your Waltons farmhouse looks like it was rear-ended by a Wal-Mart Big Box. The unavoidable reality is that you have two distinctly different structures gracelessly shoved together. On one side, we see a symmetrical residence with shuttered windows and a full-width front porch, softened by a foreground of lawn and landscaping. On the other side is an enormous, charmless, front-facing garage with no windows or detail and a foreground of pavement. Two sides are completely opposite (except for their use of dispiriting vinyl siding).
PHASE I
The solution here will be to make the garage side feel more like the house side. If we were more aggressive, we could replace the counterproductive front-facing gables of the existing garage wing with a roof slope similar to that of the main house. By adding dormer windows and a cupola, the garage side now appears to be an appropriately subservient, yet aesthetically similar complement to the main house. Hedges bordering a funneled driveway add some foreground interest to the bleak expanse of pavement.
PHASE III
In the boldest change of all, image No. 3 shows one driving up to the property facing the main house itself. Here, the house is framed by tall columnar evergreens. The unnecessary porch rail has been removed, and minor details such as round porch columns and wider shutters with authentic hardware improve the first impression. Additionally, the garage wing is now treated as a barn, off to the side and covered in a different material, which helps it read as an accessory farm building and makes its size seem appropriate.

The 5,443-squarefoot home sold for $1,152,000 and featured a two-story addition the agents describe as fabulous. “The addition included a roomy kitchen and family room that opened up to a gorgeous terrace and new pool with lovely water features,” says Benoist. “You weren’t expecting such a nice, new feature in an older home in such an established neighborhood. It also had a gorgeous master suite with windows overlooking the pool, a sitting room and big bedrooms—I think those were really appealing features for buyers.”

spaces LAURA McCARTHY lynn andel While Laura McCarthy agent Lynn Andel has had success selling million-dollar homes in St. Louis, her priority lies in helping people find a home that suits them. “There are some things you can’t change in a house, no matter the size, like the light or surrounding environment.” And the light and nature are exactly what made 13428 Conway Road exceptional. The 6,400-square-foot home was built in 1961 by William Bernoudy, a St. Louis architect and student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Andel represented McCallum Place, the buyers who bought the property for $3 million in May. McCallum Place treats patients with eating disorders and plans to use the house as a residential treatment facility. Although there are several Bernoudy homes in St. Louis, this one, which sits on 18 acres, is one of the largest and was left relatively untouched. “It’s got the Frank Lloyd Wright look—mid-century modern with lots of things integrating with the surrounding nature and very functional architecture with lots of built-ins,” says Andel. “The view out the living room is of the entire 18 acres and the sweeping valley and these big, old sycamore trees. It’s just fabulous.” The minimalist style, along with an outstanding functional floor design, results in a serene environment, says Andel. “It’s like a canvas, almost, and it’s different from a home that’s ornate with tiled floors and intricate walls,” she says. “This home allows you to enjoy the simplicity of it. You’re not overwhelmed with too many design features.”

Red Key real estate agent Mary Massey, who has been in the industry for more than two decades, says one of the most frustrating aspects of the job is when buyers lack vision and can’t look past previous owners’ decorating tastes. Fortunately, that was not the case with the couple she took to see 16 Ladue Lane, who bought the house for $1.6 million last fall. The home, which has what Massey describes as a French country feel, was built in 1994, but because of its old-world architecture and prestigious look, it appears much older. “The current owners knew right away this was the house for them,” says Massey. Since they moved in they have spent close to $200,000 on landscaping, making the already-impressive home really stand out. “You see the property as you drive down Ladue Road and it is going to be stunningly gorgeous when they finish,” Massey says. Another home Massey recalls, 12057 Embassy Row in Town and Country, was sold for just under $1 million in March. Massey had sold the home to the previous owners 12 years ago. “From the day those owners walked into the home, the plan was to redo the kitchen,” Massey says. About a decade later, just a few years before moving again, the family finally got around to the project. The kitchen now features African Jatoba wide-plank hardwood flooring, Carrera marble counter tops, a farm sink, chef’s lighting and a six-burner stove. “It is the most spectacular kitchen and you wonder why they waited as long as they did,” Massey says. “But when they finally did it they did not cut any corners. DIELMANN SOTHEBY’S | john pinchiaroli John Pinchiaroli knows luxury real estate. He got his start in the industry nine years ago in Hawaii, selling in the luxury resort market. For the past five years he’s been working in St. Louis as an agent for Dielmann Sotheby’s. Although the financial incentives of the luxury real estate market are obvious, Pinchiaroli also likes that high-end houses tend to be unique. “When you walk into one of these properties, it automatically says, this is something different, and it just pops,” he says. If unique properties pique Pinchiaroli’s interest, it’s no wonder penthouse No. 2102 at 4909 Laclede Ave. was one of his recent favorites. The condo, which sold in July for $1,075,000, is one of the largest in the building and sits pretty on the 21st floor, providing stunning views. “You basically look from Forest Park all the way to the Arch and that grabs your attention the minute you walk in the door,” Pinchiaroli says. This kind of view is rare. “There are not many buildings in the area that can give you fantastic views. Even in Clayton you don’t find this panorama in many properties.” The view alone was certainly worth a million, he says, but the state-of-the-art, $40,000 electronic sound, video and light control system recently installed in the space was an attractive perk. “You can control the lights, sounds, DVD player and shades,” Pinchiaroli says. “It is an all-in-one luxury package in keeping with the high-end feel of the penthouse.” The space also had a 250-square-foot enclosed terrace. “In bad weather, you could sit on the terrace and not get a drop of rain,” says Pinchiaroli says.
