from the editor's desk It’s that fun time of year again when we get to see what the fashion world has dreamt up for us. Fall clothes are everywhere, and, as is the case each year, some of the trends will have you wanting to rush out and fill your closet right away. Then there are others that, well, just leave you scratching your head. And while the new clothes are put together in fresh ways, I’m beginning to think the saying, There’s nothing new under the sun, was written specifically with fashion in mind. The biggest look out there is something they’re calling, variously, ‘wine’ or ‘berry.’ It’s pretty similar to a color really popular when I was in high school, cranberry. But I don’t advise calling it that since it’s not a 2016-approved term. Also big is velvet, which I remember wearing to my first homecoming dance in seventh grade. I guess velvet flits in and out of fashion, depending on the whims of the powers that be (now who, exactly, are they?) Velvet is a trend I can fully embrace—even in shoes and purses, which is how they’re showing it. And there is more good news: green is back with a vengeance, in particular army green, I mean ‘olive.’ Coming from a generation that looked to the Army surplus store for much of its fashion needs, this is big. But maybe not as big as the new coat. We are being urged to embrace bolder outerwear with bigger shoulders (dare I say padded shoulders?). And leather is hanging onto its place as the current darling of fashion-but apparently we need to supplement our prosaic blacks and browns with more fashion-forward leathers, like olive, navy and berry (colors suspiciously similiar to those of my youth). All they need to completely revive the sixties is the jumpsuit and the boxy handbag. Wait, they actually are showing jumpsuits and hard-case handbags this season; it says so on page 24.

PHOTO COURTESY OF THE LODES FAMILY

10090 Manchester Road • Glendale 63122 314-965-1400 Monday - Saturday 10am to 5pm

Her grandfather died at 31. She has the CDH1 cancer gene, as do her two brothers. So do two of her four children. Both Audrey, 19, and Perry, 17, have had total gastrectomies (complete stomach removal); Kathleen has had that and a double mastectomy, a hysterectomy, oophorectomy (ovary removal) and an appendectomy. These prophylactic measures not only have saved their lives, but also have helped save the lives of others. Since 2010, when Pedal the Cause was started, the family has ridden their bicycles more than 500 miles and raised more than $40,000 for cancer research. “It’s an emotional day,” Lodes says of the biking event that raises funds for cancer research, taking place this year the weekend of Sept. 24 and 25. Founded by two-time cancer survivor Bill Koman, the nonprofit’s mission is to cure all cancers for everyone. In six years, it has grown from a small bicycle ride of 800 friends, families and local businesses (that brought in $910,000) into a community-wide movement: In 2015, 2,868 riders raised $3,147,000, 100 percent of which funds research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. In total, the organization has donated more than $12.5 million to the two hospitals! “Pedal the Cause is having a real impact on the future of cancer research, leading to the creation of cancer vaccines and other therapies,” says executive director Jay Indovino, who has pedaled the 100-mile Century ride each year. “We are strong and getting stronger.” Indovino says both his parents died of cancer and stresses that the need is great: one in two men and one in three women will develop the disease in their lifetime. “The Lodes family is a prime example of why we all ride,” he says. MIKE LODES, WITH DAUGHTERS AUDREY AND PERRY “They are living proof that advances in AT THE 2014 PEDAL THE CAUSE. cancer research are saving lives.” The ride originally took place downtown, but last year moved out to Chesterfield, where it now meanders through leafy neighborhoods and along trails, through woods and over the Missouri River. Riders can choose between six different courses ranging in length from 10 to 100 miles. Lodes rides with husband Mike and daughter Perry. Although she had no cancer in her body when her organs were removed, she says cancer cells were found in her daughters’ stomachs. Lodes says coping with her own health issues has been challenging, but seeing her daughters adapt to postoperative life has been much harder. Audrey is a sophomore in college in California; Perry is on the varsity field hockey team at Nerinx Hall High School. “Our goal was to have the girls do everything they wanted to do,” she says. While there are no more preventive surgeries planned for them, Lodes says her daughters always will be watched carefully. Mike Lodes, a financial adviser with Pedal the Cause presenting sponsor Edward Jones, had only just started biking when he first took part in the ride six years ago. He has ridden the Century at least twice since then. He says there’s a lot of time to think over the course of all those miles, time to ponder a cause far greater than himself and to feel humbled by the support of so many people. “To know that you are making a difference, that we all are, is incredibly moving,” he says. This year, Pedal the Cause takes place Sept. 24 and 25. Festivities include a Kids’ Challenge, Taste the Cause, Cruiser Cup, an inspirational program and live entertainment.

For years the locals called it ‘Schnuckendorfs.’ That’s sometime after Schnucks took over the old Bettendorf grocery store at Clayton and South Hanley in the mid20th century and ran the supermarket there until closing it in 2003. Ambitious plans have been floated for the site for years, including one last fall that included, natch, a high-rise. And an organic grocery store. But actual plans since the outset have been as hard to pin down as Ikea’s intentions to build a store here, until now. The site, 3-plus acres, is mostly parking lot these days, but if present plans come to fruition—and they’re similar to what was proposed in November—a mixeduse development will sprawl across one of the most mysteriously long-vacant corners in the metro. The new plan includes seven stories of residential units, a restaurant, retail, and a hip grocery that’s long on fruit and short on Froot Loops and beef jerky. Just another strip mall with a parking lot and condos or apartments? Not likely—this is Clayton, after all. The plan has yet to come under the watchful eyes of the architectural mavens at City Hall, and developers are playing costs close to the vest at this point. We’re pretty sure there won’t be a Ferris wheel, aquarium or disco. You’ll have to keep your eyes on Union Station in downtown St. Louis—see item below—for those developments to come to fruition in the not-so-distant future. No kidding. (Except for the disco maybe. But one can hope, right?) Ehan Kamat is quite the entrepreneur, having realized a need and designed a solution … at age 12. The MICDS student, now 16, came up with the idea for a podiatric device after watching his mother suffer from the excruciating heel pain of plantar fasciitis, a chronic inflammation of the ligaments on the soles of the feet. His invention, the Solemender, combines cold and massage therapy, and doesn’t skid like the frozen water bottles some sufferers are wont to use. Ehan prototyped, developed and produced the product, now sold at multiple retailers in The Lou—and everywhere else in the world online. He is involved with every aspect of the company, including marketing, sales, ecommerce and distribution. Ehan recently got a nod from Upstart, a national digital publication, as one of the country’s 21 most notable new inventors. The 10th-grader helms the 3-D printing group of EHAN KAMAT the MICDS robotics team,

You’ve heard of the ‘elevator pitch,’ where you screw up the courage to give a resume spiel to a company mover-and-shaker in a 30-second elevator ride to his floor? Well Ehan snagged distribution for the Solemender with Brookstone by contacting the company CEO via LinkedIn. Talk about having the skills that will pay the bills!

they’re mostly mellow unless they sense blood in the water. At feeding time. The aquarium will be part of a $70 million family entertainment complex that includes the previously announced St. Louis Wheel, a 200-foot-high observation wheel with 30 fully enclosed gondolas that will take three to four rotations during a 10- to-12-minute ride. Are we gonna have Chicago’s Navy Pier right here in River City? Maybe even better, when Bob O’Loughlin and LHM’s plans for an aquarium fill up 75,000 square feet of St. Louis Union Station. Used to be dozens of trains came through this, the busiest train station in the world back in the day (late 19th century). But by 2018, thousands of fish will meander their way through the waters of this attraction, including one of the largest collection of sharks in the Midwest. And people will view them as closely as they dare—without having to take a plunge themselves into the 385,000-gallon tank—either through the glass or from above, if they don’t mind walking across the bridge to be suspended above the roiling, sharkinfested waters. days a year. And to Chicago and Shedd’s Aquarium, we say: We’ll put our sharks against your sharks anytime. In a couple of years. The first feature of the complex is set to open in November: the Fire & Light Show at the Lake. This will emanate from nine submerged fire pods, enhanced by lighting in trees that will synchronize every half hour to music. Chicago, Schmicago … Vegas, anyone? For all the advances of modern medicine, health care architecture has long been guided by custom and intuition rather than research and testing. That’s changing, thanks to an emerging field known as evidence-based design, says Xiaobo Quan, director of the newly formed Center for Health Research & Design (CHRD) at Washington University. Roman

Parents of kindergarteners whose young’uns attended full days in the Webster Groves School District last year may be receiving refunds for the tuition they paid, contingent on the state returning to the district the monies collected last year. The board approved full-day kindergarten a few weeks before this school year started, based on a new analysis of enrollment, staffing and state funding levels, which indicated that full-day kindergarten would generate more than enough state aid to pay for itself from here on out. In fact, based on the state foundation formula that funds public school districts, the district will benefit by approximately $600,000 a year from the program. This year, for instance, if the district enrolled as many kindergarteners as it did last year, it would capture roughly $1.1 million in state aid for attendance, compared to the $425,000 to $450,000 traditionally collected in tuition. Last year’s numbers are nearly as positive, claiming attendance for state aid would have generated about $930,000. The district will claim those funds by providing the state with revisions to its attendance data and returning the tuition collected from parents. Providing full-day kindergarten has been a long-term goal of the district, officials say, because children receive opportunities to deepen and extend their learning in a way that can’t be done in a threehour timeframe.

military hospitals, known as valetudinarian, wrapped small patient rooms around a central courtyard. Similar ancient designs can be found elsewhere. Replace the courtyard with a nurses station, and the floor plan might be that of a contemporary emergency department. But is it still viable? An emerging field known as evidencebased design has begun to rigorously reappraise the relationship between the built environment and patient outcomes. “These are inherently interdisciplinary problems,” says Quan, who joined the university’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts as CHRD director. The built environment affects behavior, as well as energy efficiency and other aspects of building performance, says Quan. But behavior also is shaped by education, operations and corporate culture. Quan says a broad perspective is essential. His doctoral thesis investigated how patient room design can affect both hand-washing compliance and family visitation. Compared to an open-bay intensive care unit, Quan found that a well-designed private room (in which sinks and gel dispensers are located by the entrance) can significantly increase hand washing and, subsequently, patient outcomes. At the same time, having more space at the bedside impacts how long visitors stay, he says. This in turn affects a patient’s experience, sense of social support and, ultimately, health outcomes.

PATTY d e h s a e unl

A glimpse at what’s going on around St. Louis and beyond.

BY PATTY HANNUM

MY DOCTOR TOLD ME TO STOP ACTING OLD.

During my annual physical, as I went through a list of all the diseases I might have, her response was, “You’re 56. Stop acting old.” She was right. Over the past year, I’ve started acting old. But who can blame me? I had a bad case of shingles, unrelenting migraines, plus every disease I could imagine. And don’t get me started on the time I spent staring in the mirror, thinking: How did that hair on my chin grow so fast? or When will insurance pay for an eye-lift? I guess I was acting old. My knees hurt from too many years in high heels. My lower back hurt from too many years sitting at a desk. I gained weight, well, from too many years eating more than I should. I stopped exercising because I hate to sweat. But when my doctor called me out on the old mindset, it struck me that I needed to do something about it. In part, because some of me thinks I still got it going on ... you know, that if I’m dressed just right and have a touch of makeup, I could still turn a head or two (perhaps an elderly head, but nonetheless a head). So, I am now on a mission to stop acting old. I spent many years in the marketing industry, and I know a good pitch when I see it. So when I saw a brochure that said, ‘Feel Like You’re 29 Again,’ well, I knew this might be a good place to start. The brochure was for Exercise Wise, a studio that specializes in Gyrotonics and yoga. Twenty-nine was a pretty good year for me, so I set up an appointment to meet with Heidi Johnson to start my age reversal. Gyrotonics is an exercise method that incorporates circular motions that move your joints through their entire range of motion. The result should be improved joint health, muscle strength and flexibility. And since ‘creaky’ is a word I often use to describe myself, this seemed like a perfect match. The Gyrotonics tower is bizarre looking. It has pulleys, weights, handles and straps, and I’m pretty sure if you used it without any knowledge, you’d be in a heap of trouble. I was very glad Heidi was there to take me through a workout that focused on moving all parts of my body. I stretched, flexed and moved all over the place, but when it was over, I didn’t feel like I had worked out ... until the next day. And then I realized my upper arms still did have muscles. Now, this is not a one-shot deal. You have to commit. So, I have been going for a few weeks, and I must say that even though I still stare at the Gyrotonics tower with trepidation, I am far less creaky and far more flexible than I was when I started. Am I 29 yet? No, but I’ve moved down to my 40s, and that’s not bad for a few weeks of work. I’ll keep you posted on my quest to reverse the effects of aging—or maybe I will just adjust my attitude and be more like my mom. During the recent heat wave, newscasters kept telling people to check on their pets and the elderly. So, I called my 90-something mother to make sure she was OK in the heat. She responded, “I’m not elderly, call someone else.” CONTACT PATTY AT PHANNUM@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM.

Every day is a good day to honor those who served, but Sept. 11 is when nearly 7,000 flags will be on display at Art Hill in Forest Park as part of the AMERICA'S HEARTLAND REMEMBERS PROJECT. The 'Flags of Valor' pay tribute to servicemen and women who have perished since 9-11. Each bears a single name and date of death.

Kudos all around as The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis gets the largest single gift in its illustrious 50-year history: $1 million from the AUGUSTIN FAMILY. An endowment gift, it underwrites the newly named Augustin Family Artistic Director position.

It’s a win-win-win, that is, the collaboration between the Playhouse @ Westport Plaza (newly owned by Emery Entertainment) and STAGES executive producer JACK LANE. Lane applauds the “intimate and inviting theater,” while the Westport Plaza team (part of Bob O’Loughlin’s Lodging Hospitality Management) welcomes all the new buzz as a way to bring more attention to the northwest county entertainment area.

Hard to believe it's been 10 years since the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum moved its amazing collection into a brand-new building at Skinker Boulevard and Brookings Drive. To celebrate the occasion, a comprehensive exhibition, Real/Radical/Psychological: The Collection on Display opens Sept. 9. Showing off its esteemed permanent collection (W.U.'s is one of the oldest university art museums), the exhibition is divided into three galleries: The Long Nineteenth Century, Modernism and the Twentieth Century, and Contemporary Moments. thorny complexities of the human condition. In the offices of Stange Law Firm, the really hard work takes place—the detangling of families, the sharing-out of children. There are gentle bedside manners behind these desks, and tissues on them. “You have to have a heart,” he says of the often heartbreaking work. The family lawyer started his firm with wife Paola in 2007 as a tiny two-person office in Clayton. Now the practice is one of the largest of its kind in Missouri and Illinois, with more than 30 attorneys spread across 11 full-time and three part-time offices around the state, and three full-time and one part-time office in Illinois. That makes sense, considering nearly one in two marriages ends in divorce and four in 10 children, according to Stange, are born out of wedlock. Stange says he never imagined he would go into this particular field. He earned his undergraduate degree in history and, at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law, was taken with government and constitutional law. “But the need was great,” Stange says. “I got more and more family cases and suddenly, I was a family lawyer!” Now, 16 years on, he has clients from all walks of life and, in addition to divorce and custody, his firm deals with adoption, fertility and surrogacy, child neglect, parental abduction, spousal abuse and other family matters. “This is deep, societal stuff,” Stange says, explaining his commitment to the field. “And it feels good to help people through difficult times.” The Stanges’ commitment to the wider St. Louis community also is strong: Kirk’s firm has provided pro bono legal services for domestic violence victims, and in 2011, his wife was recognized by the St. Louis County Circuit Court for her volunteer work with domestic violence cases. Other local charities and causes the firm supports include Woman’s Place for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, Kids Rock Cancer, Old Newsboys, Friends of Wings, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation and People with Purpose, which aids adults and youth involved with the criminal justice system. In addition to the various branches of family law, Stange also practices in mediation and collaborative divorce, where the aim is to resolve disputes peacefully and make the court process simpler. In these cases, the firm brings other experts to the table: financial advisers, psychologists, child custody professionals, etc. “The goal here is to problem-solve before things get out of hand,” he says. “But even if there’s mutual agreement, it still can be complicated when there are children, houses and money involved.” In his experience, the breakdown in communication is usually a significant factor in divorce. “Hurts build over time,” he explains. “And reasonableness is in the eye of the beholder; everyone thinks their position is right.” When the Stanges first set up shop in Clayton those nine years ago, they were newlyweds, brought together by fate. He grew up here; she hailed from Guatemala. They met at another law firm. “For better or worse, divorce happens,” Stange says, “but I don’t recommend it!”

HOW WILL BREXIT AFFECT AMERICAN RETIREMENT PLANNING/FUNDS, AND HOW SHOULD PEOPLE PLAN ACCORDINGLY?

The word ‘Brexit’ dominated the headlines at the end of the quarter as voters in the United Kingdom surprised politicians and pundits by voting to leave the European Union (EU). The resulting market turmoil left the British pound down sharply and international equities lower. This news capped a quarter in which the U.S. stock market recovered from its poor start to the year, international stocks continued to struggle, and the fixed income bond market rallied on the expectation that the Federal Reserve will stay “lower for longer.” Following Brexit, I do not expect the Fed to hike rates this year, and I would expect there to be further market volatility associated with U.S. elections in the fall. Despite political and economic uncertainty, we expect growth through year-end to remain modestly positive. While this news will create some noise in the markets, retirees should plan for increased volatility and uncertainty, and it is important to maintain a diversified portfolio with a disciplined rebalancing plan and set aside cash for short-term needs. If you’re planning for retirement, I recommend that you review your financial plan regularly and discuss any changes with your adviser so he can make sure your asset allocation remains consistent with your goals, risk tolerance, time horizon and liquidity needs.

I consider Brexit a much needed wake-up call for retirees. Anyone who has followed the market has noticed that the stock market has been on a roller-coaster ride in the wake of Britain’s surprise June vote to leave the European Union. The market dipped very quickly but soon recovered. That’s why it’s very important not to panic and make bad, emotional decisions. It’s crucial to make levelheaded, logical decisions about your retirement nest egg. Logically, we know that the market is at an all-time high. We are supposed to buy low and sell high. If you are in your 20s or 30s, it makes sense to continue to invest and ride the market out. However, if you’re retired or about to retire, this is not the time to hang in there thinking it’s only a ‘paper loss.’ The last two times we had an alltime high—in 2001 and 2008— the market fell afterward by more than 40 percent. My grandmother always said, “If you fool me once, it’s a shame on you; if you fool me twice, it’s a shame on me, but if you fool me three times … ” The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Since this is the third time the market has been at an all-time high in the last 16 years, don’t make the same mistake.

Q: HOW CAN THE AFFLUENT LEAVE MONEY IN A TRUST FOR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS, WITHOUT SPOILING THEM? styleSENSE fall trends

ALTHOUGH HEAT INDEXES HERE HAVE BEEN FLIRTING WITH TRIPLE DIGITS, fall collections will start hitting the stores this month. And while it’s hard (and sweat-inducing) to look at long sleeves, heavy fabrics and outerwear, it actually is a good time to look in your closet and see what you want to add (and give away).

It includes some repeat trends along with a few interesting newbies: corsetry, pajamas, ‘athLuxury,’ layering, oversized, gender-free, knits, ‘street,’ velvet, leather (suit)/shearling (zip-off), military (camouflage, army coat), prints, fur, tops (shirt/blouse), pants (cropped, wide), skirts (midi/full), dresses (print/waistline-skimming), coat (tech coat/cape), puffers, evening (sweater-over-long skirt/tuxedo dress), shoe (Mary Jane) and bag (the box). Colors run the gamut from pastels and pink to cognac, wine, navy, yellow, evergreen and black (of course!). Did I leave anything out?

COVER STORY

[CLOSE & CARING COVENANT CHRISTIAN SCHOOL by karyn meyer THE HALLWAYS AT COVENANT CHRISTIAN SCHOOL are filled with students who know each other

by more than just names. Its small enrollment creates an intimate environment that encourages student exploration, family involvement and trusted relationships. Here, community is a way of life. “We have about 150 students, age 3 through grade six, and that’s our maximum,” says head of school John Roberts. “We made a conscious decision when we opened 14 years ago to be this size.” A ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Town & Country, the school’s vision is to be Christ-centered, grace-filled and academically excellent. “We’re unique because we really focus on relationships, especially across grade levels,” Roberts notes. The majority of recess sessions are at the same time for all students, and the student body gathers three times a week in the morning for prayer, singing and scripture memory. “From the first day they start school here, we expect students to lead and care well for one another, especially our youngest ones,” he says. “By remaining small, we truly can focus on this idea of taking care of others.” One way to build community is through the morning gathering, a time when the entire school meets to share news and interests. It is also an opportunity to encourage public speaking skills. From the 3-year-olds on up, everyone is expected to speak in front of the entire student body. “It starts with show and tell or sharing something they’ve learned in class for the little guys and progresses every year,” Roberts explains. “By second grade, students give speeches and recite poetry. In sixth grade, they give two formal presentations. From an early age, students feel comfortable using a microphone in front of a large group. They know they are supported and loved.” Along with a formal curriculum, Roberts says they recognize that students have different interests, gifts and abilities. “We want to help them explore those while they’re here,” he notes. “We encourage student-initiated projects. We let students know they have to do the work, but we’ll help. Unless there is a good reason to say no, I never do.” An example is the recent addition of a fairy garden last year, prompted by the fourth-grade girls. “Our outdoor classroom director helped the girls create it, and an alumnus helped build what they wanted.” The experiential, hands-on philosophy of Covenant Christian School is evident everywhere. An extensive outdoor classroom, which is conveniently integrated into the playground space, includes a working windmill, campfire circle, school farm (named Miss Annie’s Farm after the student who spearheaded the project), berry patch, compost bins, small fruit orchard, greenhouse and the school’s science building. “We’re blessed with great outdoor space,” Roberts says. “Kids climb trees and explore the woodlands, and we’ve worked with the Missouri Botanical Garden and Missouri Department of Conservation to create a nice prairie over the last eight years.” ‘Blessed’ is a word Roberts uses to describe many things about the school. “Our faith is just who we are. Each member of our staff has a deep faith in Christ, and it’s something we’re very purposeful about,” he says. Thirty churches from a wide variety of denominations are represented, and Roberts says a relationship with Christ comes out in every aspect of the school. “Children are more than intellectual beings,” he says. “They are spiritual beings as well, created in the image of God, and we want them to really understand who they are and find success.”

the 20-acre complex was uncertain. For a few years, its doors were simply closed. By 1985, Union Station reopened after renovations transformed it into a hotel, shopping and entertainment center. Despite the massive changes, Union Station still couldn’t re-establish itself as the premier stop between the east and west coasts, a title it firmly claimed in the 1890s when it was the busiest and largest train station in the world. That is changing, however. After buying the property in 2012, Lodging Hospitality Management has combined the structure’s historic past with modern-day amenities. LHM’s $40 million in renovations transport people back to the landmark’s original glory days. “It is so unique,” says Todd Hotaling, LHM vice president of revenue and marketing. “You’re not going to find this type of elegant architecture anywhere.” That elegance has been uncovered in places the company never expected. “In the Grand Hall, when we pulled up the existing flooring, we uncovered the floor from 100 years earlier, and it was perfect,” Hotaling says. “That is what you walk on today.” Architect Theodore Link designed Union Station in the Romanesque style. The structure was built with Bedford stone, but its beauty goes much deeper than the often-photographed exterior. Recently completed renovations include the Gothic Corridor, which sits along Market Street near the front desk. It is another example of how the magnificent structure’s past is being preserved, with onlookers able to see the original glazed Italian terracotta tiles, gold leafing and mosaic tile with fleur de lis design. “It’s my favorite room in the whole hotel,” Hotaling says. “It’s a gorgeous space in Union Station that clients can use for small gatherings.” The general public is welcome at anytime to view Gothic Corridor and other of the station’s historic highlights, like the seven ladies adorning each end of the Grand Hall archway and the allegorical window. The stained-glass window consists of three women, each representing one of the main U.S. train stations in the late 18th century. “It is so interesting, and it’s all the original stained glass,” Hotaling says of the window designed by Sylvester Annan from the St. Louis firm of Davis & Chambers. “There is nothing formal written on what the design was. But St. Louis sits between San Francisco and New York, so one story is that both coasts are looking inward in envy of our train station. The pride of St. Louis is really represented well there.” While preserving history, LHM is adding all the modern amenities current travelers desire, and sometimes the two collide. In the process of adding a Starbucks to one area, workers uncovered a massive mural hidden behind a wall. The 1942 art by Chicago artist Louis Grell now hangs behind the front desk. Another area where the new and old meet is the Terminal Hotel. Originally, the area housed railroad employees with the simplest of accommodations. Its entrance has been restored to its past glory, but now the interior of each room has been transformed with top-of-the-line accommodations. History is hardly lost among the four-diamond service, however. Each room has a specific railway line name and is adorned with photos from when Union Station was buzzing with travelers. “It’s truly a one-of-a-kind hotel experience in St. Louis,” Hotaling said. SNUGGLED INTO A TINY STRIP at the corner of

McKnight Road and Olive Boulevard, Tai Ke bills itself as the only authentic Taiwanese restaurant in town. Much of the cuisine will seem familiar, with stir fry dishes, noodle soups and sizzling entrees. But there are subtle differences here and there, and several dishes that offer flavors largely foreign to Westerners (pork floss, pork ear, pork blood curd). It’s a small and simple place that appears to be a family affair, and you may encounter a language barrier that varies from server to server. Especially appealing is a small section on the menu entitled Taiwanese Street Snack. That’s where I found two excellent picks: Gua Bao ($5.99) and Sticky Rice Cake ($4.99). The first, of course, is steamed buns, which are very well done here with cilantro sprigs, ground peanuts, pickled mustard greens and a big slab of pork belly. It was also my first encounter with ‘house sauce,’ which was an excellent red concoction of sweet and savory. Be prepared,

however, to lop off some of the pork fat as one of the two buns was mostly fat. The Sticky Rice Cake is simply a mound of sticky rice flavored with dried shrimp, shiitake mushrooms and ‘pork floss,’ which is shaved dried pork. It has intense pork and salt flavors, as well as umami (no doubt from MSG), and a powdery texture that explains its nickname: ‘meat wool.’ The rice cake comes topped with ‘chef’s dressing,’ which looked and tasted like the appealing house sauce. Tai Ke is known for its Signature Three Cup Chicken ($10), a hot pot of bone-in chicken pieces cooked with the traditional ‘three cups:’ one cup each of soy, oil and rice wine. The result is quite tasty, but be forewarned that the chicken is hacked into irregular pieces, bonein, with sharp shards pretty much everywhere. Roasted garlic, ginger and basil additionally flavor this dish. Notice also there are no veggies in this dish (or in many others).

Hakka Stir Fry is a traditional Taiwanese offering, and we ordered a version of that here: Triple Shredded Stir Fry ($10). It was an amazing plateful of matchstick slivers that were indistinguishable, one from the other, although it was a mix of shiitake mushroom, pork and dried tofu. These were stir-fried with a considerable number of dried red chili peppers (you can ask them to moderate the heat). The result was excellent in flavor, the relatively bland tofu tempering the heat and the pork and mushrooms adding the savory—all in plenty of oil. Most familiar-tasting was Chili Stir Fry Shrimp ($14), a generous serving of lightly coated and fried whole shrimps with a spicy flavoring sauce (not liquid-y at all) of chili peppers, roasted garlic and scallion; it was hot and sweet and quite delicious. A few ‘celery’ stalks were in there that didn’t resemble the usual, but rather were thin slivers, intensely flavored, that looked like the celery tops Westerners cut off and discard. It was an interesting and tasty meal all around.

APRONOMICS VERONICA BAETJE OF BAETJE FARMS ]

by stephanie zeilenga | photos by bill barrett

IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN SERENDIPITY IN 1998 WHEN VERONICA BAETJE,

already considering trying her hand at cheesemaking, found someone selling a goat for $45. But plenty of hard work followed, transforming Baetje’s hobby into a full-fledged creamery that now produces some of the best French-style goat cheese in the world. Located in Bloomsdale, Missouri, the farm, which Baetje runs with her husband Steve, operates out of a century-old barn, constructed from a Sears and Roebuck kit. Prior to their move to Bloomsdale, the Baetjes lived in a Mennonite community in southeast Illinois where they grew their own food and tended a large garden. “That was inspiring from both a spiritual and lifestyle standpoint, living closer to the earth and using the resources God gives us to produce food,” she notes. It was this, combined with happy memories of her father making cheese in the St. Louis home where she grew up, that led Baetje to consider cheesemaking herself. “I remember how exciting it was to make milk coagulate and turn into cheese,” she recalls. Cheesemaking was initially a fun pursuit, allowing Baetje to learn the ropes on a small scale. When she discovered just how good her cheeses were, she was inspired to start a business. The Baetjes took their education seriously, attending the Vermont Institute for Artisan Cheese and advanced cheesemaking courses at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. To produce its cheeses, Baetje Farms starts with happy, healthy animals; it now is home to 90 Saanen goats, a white breed from Switzerland. They drink filtered spring water from the farm’s well, and their antibiotic-free, whole-grain

diet, which includes oats, molasses and flower seeds, is supplemented with organic herbal teas, Baetje says. “Our animals have open-air housing, so they’re free to come and go outside as they please.” The production process is entirely hands-on. To transform the goats’ milk into cheese, Baetje Farms uses fresh rennet and cultures imported from Europe. Each cheese is hand-wrapped and goes through a delicate aging system. “The most satisfying thing is when you’re in the aging room and the cheese looks, smells and tastes wonderful,” Baetje says. “It’s such a fulfillment of all your hard work.” Baetje Farms produces on average around 750 pounds each week. The first cheese it produced was the heart-shaped chevre, and it now also offers a variety of savory and sweet Coeur de la Crèmes and five types of aged cheeses. One of the most popular is the pyramid-shaped Bloomsdale, inspired by the French Valançay cheese. For five years in a row, this has won the top ranking at the World Cheese Awards, beating out more than 2,500 others. Baetje adds that while she is on the award’s judging panel, she doesn’t participate in judging her own cheese. Another award-winner is the Miette, a creamy variety made with sheep and goat milk. “It has a nice yeasty rind, and it makes the aging room smell like rising bread dough and fine white wine,” Baetje says. “The density is similar to a cheesecake that melts on your tongue.” Baetje Farms ships its cheese all over the country. Locally it can be found at Whole Foods and specialty cheese and wine shops. Some items also are offered at local farmers markets.

GREY GARDENS

SUMMER IN ST LOUIS HAS MANY TRADITIONS: Cardinals baseball,

Ted Drewes custard and musicals. I remember dressing up for the free seats at The Muny while in high school but also recall watching Jesus Christ Superstar on a sweltering 4th of July in 104-degree heat. Max & Louie Productions gave us a chilling descent into crazy town with Grey Gardens, the musical. Many people are familiar with the story of the socialite Beales, who became eccentric, hoarding hermits, with several film and stage productions that documented the motherdaughter ‘love story.’ Being someone who eschews reality TV and prefers not to look at car wrecks, I was not acquainted with the tale. The two Edies, Debby Lennon as the adult Edie and Madeline Purches as her younger self, are powerhouse singers immersed in a difficult score. They were terrific on every level. Lennon’s deterioration in the second act was particularly enthralling, but I had a difficult time accepting the story as ‘entertainment.’ That being said, the production was well done all around, with a great cast and design team, and strong direction by Annamaria Pileggi. Another musical I was completely unfamiliar with is The Drowsy Chaperone, even though the creator, Don McKellar, enjoys an ardent fan base at our house. Stages produced this delicious meringue of frothy confection, and the evening was such a delight, I called my inlaws immediately after to tell them they must see this show! Some of the credit goes to McKellar and his writing cronies, some to the glorious costume designs of Brad Musgrave (especially Janet’s red dress in ‘Show Off,’ and absolutely everything the Drowsy Chaperone wears), certainly Michael Hamilton and Lisa Campbell Albert deserve kudos for the stage and musical direction, and the gorgeous, talented cast can take as many bows as they like for their contribution. All the pieces aside, I would lay the entire success of the show at the feet of the Man in Chair, David Schmittou, who seems to channel McKellar as he dances us through this sugarplum dream. It is his energy and passion that enchants the audience and propels the cast through their first-rate velocities. All the cast members are worthy of mention, but I particularly delighted in the vaudevillian styling of the gangsters, Ryan Alexander Jacobs and Austin Glen Jacobs, twin brothers with rock-solid comic timing. Edward Juvier’s Aldolpho and Corinne Melançon’s Chaperone provided lots of laughs as well, as did the by-play of Kari Ely and John Flack. Finally, this summer gave me a treat in seeing my goddaughter, Lola Harper, in her first show, Dear Edwina, this year’s musical offering by Shrewsbury Youth Theater. Kudos to Lola and Sammy Parson.

Florence Foster Jenkins 〉〉

This is a film about an NYC socialite during the dark times of World War II who loves music and wants to share it with, well, everyone. Alas, she doesn’t have the voice for it, and a diseased hand prevents proficiency with any other instrument. While Meryl Streep is engaging in the title role, and Hugh Grant shows a remarkable range of expressions in support of his wife (none of them betraying displeasure), the biopic struck me as a onedimensional portrait. I left pretty much with one burning question: What makes this story worthy of a movie? The answer still eludes me. Streep was comical in her portrayal, but certainly, I reasoned, no one could be that oblivious in real life, not only to her shortfalls as a virtuoso, but also to her husband’s, uh, parallel life in a separate apartment. Or to the obsequious fawning of everyone from Arturo Toscanini to the bellman. And that is the movie’s Achilles’ heel. Yes, it is a comedy (a tragi-comedy, if you consider the philanthropic Florence the victim of an overbearing father, a syphillitic first husband and a thankless New York music community). But it’s hard to muster any emotion other than amusement for a character drawn only as a cartoon. The bright spot of the film was Simon Helberg (Big Bang’s Howie Wolowitz), whose doe-eyed expressions of horror as Florence’s accompanist are worth the price of admission alone.

SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Yes, if only for laughs. —D.W. VIEWED AT LANDMARK PLAZA FRONTENAC

Summer’s on the wane.

Those sweet, gauzy days are fast receding, becoming specks of memory in our rear-view mirrors. It’s game-on for the new school year, and all hands are on deck to ready our children for the road ahead. There’s a lot to think about: How do we help our student with learning difficulties? How do we keep our football player safe on the field? How do we lift (all) their eyes from their smartphone screens? We parents thought we’d left school behind long ago. No such luck! When is enough, enough? “When there isn’t balance,” says Sam Page, head of Rohan Woods School. “... And when electronic use isn’t monitored by adults.” As is the case with almost everything, parents need to model the behavior they want to see in their children. “If we have our own heads in our cell phones, we can’t expect our kids to be any different,” she says.

At Rohan Woods, Page says technology is used “strategically and purposefully,” not independent of instruction, but in conjunction with it. However, what goes on at home is outside a school’s purview. In a world where so much communication happens via text and emotions are conveyed by emoji, real face-to-face interaction also is something parents need to model. “We have to facilitate conversations with our young people,” Page says. Computers also are partly to blame for more sedentary lifestyles. Elementary students are less of a concern because they spend time outside each day, but Page says the

In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new data on the prevalence of autism in the United States. The study found that one in 68 children has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), described as a neurodevelopmental problem characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Liz Kinsella, program director at Thrive Autism Solutions, says there may be a genetic component, but better understanding of the condition also may be behind increased figures. Early diagnosis is important because it helps families receive support, she says, adding that public schools are better equipped these days to help children with ASD. They are required—under the 1996 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act—to provide free and appropriate education to all students. “Many families wish they could send their child to a private or parochial school,” says Kinsella. “But often, there simply aren’t the accommodations in place.” Public schools, however, offer Individual Education Plans (IEPs). These are legal documents that outline programs and goals specific to each child, and they include any special requirements a student might have (duplicate books to keep at home, frequent breaks during the day, extra test time, etc.). In addition, an organization like Thrive might send a behavior technician into the classroom to be with the child until they can cope alone. “We’ll go wherever we are welcome,” Kinsella says. Regardless of the type of institution, there are ways for parents to help children manage school. One of the biggest challenges for a person with ASD is anxiety, says Cyndy Vincent, speech and language pathologist with both Autism Solutions and Lindbergh High School. Whatever a family can do to reduce it will help a child better navigate their day, and life generally, she says. Routines play a large part in this. “Predictability is key and gives the child a sense

older children get, the less activity there can be. “It’s so easy for busy parents to lose track of screen-time,” she says. Before we know it, hours have gone by and our teen hasn’t moved. MICDS is an enthusiastic proponent of technology as a learning tool, and has had a one-to-one laptop program since 2008. (There are currently 1,650 such devices on the MICDS campus for both students and teachers.) Every child is subject to an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), which sets out expectations, and there are clear rules for engaging in social media. Tom Wyman, director of technology for the past seven years, says the school has become more savvy about leveraging the power of technology outside the classroom. Students take their laptops home each night, he explains, and are part of an online learning management system that facilitates teacher/student interaction and collaborative work with peers. Like Page, however, he is quick to stress that a computer is no substitute for parental involvement, and encourages families to remain fully engaged. While Wyman says society is being “morphed” by technology and advances are taking place at lightning speed, he also thinks that a school can remain resilient to too much change. In his seven years at MICDS, he says he has seen no disintegration of relations among students and no negative impact on the community as a whole. “It’s our job to prepare our young people for life,” Wyman says. “And technology is a giant piece of that. There’s no denying it, and no stopping it.”

of control. The more structure they have, the happier they are,” she says. Adhering to an evening schedule (downtime, homework, dinner, bed) can make all the difference; preparing for the following morning the night before (organizing papers, packing a backpack) can make for a peaceful start to the day. “It takes the stress off everyone in the household and gradually leads to independence.” Both Vincent and Kinsella recommend that parents communicate closely with teachers about their child’s needs. Before the year begins, take them to meet teachers and request photographs of their faces to be matched to the student’s

Other small things can have a big impact: Keep all papers in a single binder, recommends Vincent, and paste their timetable on the front. Hang reminders on the front door (backpack, coat, lunchbox) or on the bathroom mirror (shower, teeth, medicine). School lunch can be particularly difficult for a child with autism. Arrange for him/her to be paired with a buddy, and, early on, bring a sandwich from home, which can make navigating the cafeteria far less daunting. While Vincent acknowledges electronics can help with a student’s daily planning, she says they ought not be used within two hours of bedtime because of their tendency to interfere with sleep. “Rest is essential for all of us, but especially for a person with autism,” she says.

With football and soccer season upon us, our thoughts swivel back to concussion. Once again, we parents—knuckles

gnawed—return to our spots on the sidelines, dreading the crack of helmet on helmet, the thump of shoulders. We hear a lot about concussion these days, but Dr. Brian Mahaffey, medical director of Mercy Sports Medicine and team physician for the St. Louis Cardinals, says this may be

due to increased awareness rather than increased occurrence. “We may be seeing more patients because we're doing a much better job of recognizing concussion when it happens,” he says.

Mahaffey explains concussion like this: an injury caused by the rotation of the head, not a blow to the head. “A concussion isn't anatomical, but occurs at cell-level. It is caused by a jolt through the energy pattern of the brain,”

out pre-season help to establish a baseline by which an athlete is gauged post-injury. And a recent Missouri state law mandates that any high school sanctioned by the Missouri State High School Athletic Association must prevent a player from returning to the field until he has been assessed thoroughly by a concussion expert. One of the difficulties, the doctors say, is that different

Symptoms include headache, problems with balance, light sensitivity, inability to concentrate and moodiness. There might be a change in personality. They might seem like a different kid.” he says. This means that helmets can do only so much, protecting the skull from fracture, but not the brain from the secondary blow that occurs within it. The only way truly to prevent such an injury, he says, would be to bolt the helmet to the shoulder pads to keep the head in one place. Symptoms include headache, problems with balance, light sensitivity, inability to concentrate and moodiness. “There might be a change in personality,” explains Dr. Sean Goretzke, pediatric neurologist with SLUCare Physician Group. “They might seem like a different kid.” According to Mahaffey and Goretzke, concussions occur most frequently in football and soccer, but also are common in ice hockey and lacrosse. By teaching new tackling techniques (using shoulders rather than head) and calling fouls when necessary, schools are addressing the problem. In addition, concussion screening tests carried

brains respond differently. Where it may take a hefty knock for one person to suffer concussion, another may experience problems after only a minor encounter. It is important to know how repeated concussions might be affecting an athlete and when they should cease playing, but traditional MRIs don't provide this information, Goretzke says. (He adds that other, more advanced imaging is in the works). Both doctors concur that concussion that leads to chronic problems happens only in 5 to 10 percent of cases. “With the right care, 95 percent of people recover very quickly,” says Mahaffey. “The worst thing a kid can do is tough it out and play through,” Goretzke stresses. Rest is vital and return to work and play must be gradual, over a period of one to two weeks. “Kids who struggle to get back too quickly tend to have more problems down the road.”

LUXE LIVING LAURA MCCARTHY REAL ESTATE by karyn meyer

COVER STORY

THE GREAT ROOM AT 35 CHESTERFIELD LAKES

ST. LOUIS IS A CITY WITH MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES: Clayton’s cosmopolitan

walkable community, Kirkwood’s family atmosphere and ‘cute’ downtown, Chesterfield’s rolling hills and large lots. But whatever the neighborhood, there is an abundance of homes that offer amenities, privacy, beautifully landscaped grounds and perfect spaces for entertainment at enviable prices. Laura McCarthy Real Estate has been serving local buyers and sellers for more than 70 years, and getting positive feedback on the area’s prospering—and unique—home market. The company, which focuses on homes within the central corridor, is also known for listing a wide range of houses in the luxury category. Listings vary from the traditional, like 26 Fordyce Lane, a classically stunning Colonial Revival estate in Ladue built in the 1930s, to 35 Chesterfield Lakes Road, a sprawling ranch in Chesterfield on 3 private acres commissioned by homeowners Paul and Linda Lee 14 years ago and recently put on the market. The Lees, who moved to St. Louis in the ’80s from North Dakota, chose the West County location to be near Paul’s office. They built the home just about a mile from where they first lived in St. Louis. Now, the two are ready to downsize to a condo, but recall their time in the area with great memories. “Chesterfield is so convenient and easy to get around,” Paul says. “It really has developed quite a bit over the years, now offering a lot more shopping and restaurants. It’s just a nice place to be.” The two decided to build the house when Linda needed a new project, Paul jokes. They started

exploring and discovered the Chesterfield Lakes subdivision. Its tucked-away setting appealed to them both. “The entire development is just beautiful, full of mature trees and wildlife,” Linda says. “And every house sits on a 3-acre lot, so it’s really private.” There is access to tennis courts and two private lakes for paddleboats or other activities. They say the lot was perfectly situated for the kind of home they wanted: a contemporary ranch with lower level walkout. “The house is designed so the lower level can be used for entertaining, as well as the main level,” Linda says. “We wanted to have a large gathering space that could hold a lot of people.” Through Linda’s involvement with the Bach Society, the couple has hosted sit-down concerts with symphony players for up to 70 people. “It’s a very open concept with fabulous acoustics for live performances,” she says. “Our parties often would start with cocktails in the basement before moving guests upstairs for dinner.” She notes the lower level is ideal for overnight guests as well. “We don’t know they’re down there most of the time,” she laughs. The expansive wine cellar is more than adequate for properly storing hundreds of bottles, and a large kitchen offers professional-grade appliances and impressive architectural details. “The kitchen is really well done,” Paul says. “It’s a great place to cook and gather with guests.” They didn’t want a ‘traditional’ home, but they did want one that is comfortable and inviting, which is how they describe it. “People often comment on what a warm house it is,” Linda says. “When we’re asked to name a favorite area, it’s the whole house!”

She recalls going to Forest Park Highlands, an amusement park (which closed in 1963), and fondly remembers childhood Sundays when her parents would drive her and her siblings to the banks of the Mississippi on the riverfront. She was a school teacher in the Parkway and Clayton school districts prior to going into real estate; she has been at Gladys Manion for 30 years. Wroth has two children and lives in the Claverach Park neighborhood of Clayton.

[HOMEWORK: t i d e r c a extr

DEAR HOMEWORK,

As young newlyweds, we are excited to be moving into our first home. The twobedroom, brick ranch is in great shape, with new windows and roof, but as you will no doubt notice, it is virtually devoid of architectural interest. We are committed to bringing out the home’s potential (both front and back), so we have sent you photos of both (you choose). Please work your magic; we want to love our house! Sincerely, —HIT THE RESET BUTTON

P.S. I want a vegetable garden, and we will move the A.C. condenser to the side yard. DEAR HIT THE RESET BUTTON,

I was due for an installment of our protracted Homework Extra Credit column, so I am going to give you my thoughts on both sides of your house. For the front, let’s fix the problems, then add some charm. The first thing I notice is the oddly placed cupola, which is probably needed to vent the attic space. You will see that I have moved it to a more aesthetically pleasing location, and I’ve made it taller. Next I would make the shutters wider to better suit the wide windows. Finally, I would like to make a bigger deal out of the hidden/perpendicular front door. You will notice a wider corner column and arched trim to make the entry more prominent. To add some charm, I first would suggest making the living room window taller. Homes of this era usually have simple roof framing, which would allow raising the ceiling fairly easily. Installing a carriage-type garage door will greatly enhance the front. Landscape upgrades start with some screening from the neighboring houses,

then adding details like a flower box and front porch urn. Additionally, new street trees and mailbox plantings help frame the composition. The rear façade has even less going for it than the front, so I would start with creating a memorable feature out of the sided addition. As with the front, I show making a much bigger window and replacing the metal awnings with permanent architectural ones. As for the glass block windows, one has been replaced with a new double hung and, where appropriate, shutters have been added. The concrete foundation has been painted dark brown to make it recede and form a backdrop for plantings. The desired vegetable garden is treated like a formal garden to be viewed from the new Juliet balcony, and the fern-like locust trees provide gentle shade and enclosure to the large existing terrace. Moving the A.C. and painting out some of the vents and conduits help create a more serene backdrop for the patio plantings and furniture. With all these changes, your new home could suit you for a lifetime. Hope that Helps, —HOMEWORK

design dilemma

ASID PRESENTS....

“How do you INCORPORATE LUXURY into design?”

LINDA SAYS:

The challenge was to create a master bathroom that is luxurious, accommodates two separate sink cabinet stations, has additional storage cabinets, a soaking tub with hand held shower controls and a large walk-in shower. The most important thing was it had to be Universal design with a fully accessible tub and separate accessible shower. Linda Kusmer, Total Interior Designs Inc, accomplished all this by having open floor space in the center of the room, using a side raise tub and a non-threshold shower. The custom Rustic Elegant cabinets, stone vanity tops and specialty hardware; along with the bordered wall tile and random laid floor tiles bring beauty, form and function to the space. Separately controlled lighting, artwork and accessories complete the design.

KELLY SAYS:

The luxury of space fit for a family of five was designed into the 2-story addition on the back of this historic Webster home. Spacious and airy, yet cozy and functional due to the elegance of Pennville cabinetry, classic color palette and brass finishes, the new kitchen is beautifully appointed with dramatic linear windows and treatments, a 10-foot island and breakfast banquette. The cabinetry design allows for ample storage while maintaining a bespoke furniture feel.
