[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] Labor Day this year follows a recent visit from my kids and grandkids, and it has given me a new perspective on work. It’s true what they say about ‘life balance.’ Visiting with two preschoolers is priceless; doing it 24/7 is challenging—and that doesn’t even take into account the other ‘kids.’ For one thing, they’ve filled my pantry with stuff like goat’s milk kefir, Pirate’s Booty and vegan soup (all at Whole Foods prices). I guess that’s what comes of ‘loaning’ my charge card. Then there’s the converse of finding new things, which is not being able to find old ones. Like my serving spoons. It seems perfectly clear to me that they belong in the flatware drawer, but then I don’t think like a Gen-Xer. Hey, at least they emptied the dishwasher. Baby steps. And the grandkids, well, let’s just say they really like to utilize all the space available to them. Even though we took them to the Zoo, the Science Center, The Magic House, Purina Farms, the Muny and multiple parks, apparently nothing is as much fun as raiding Bubby’s basement for My Little Ponies and other toys with miniscule parts. The other day I found three Hot Wheels and a Smurf under the sofa. And I’m still trying to scrape blue paint off the kitchen table. That Styrofoam airplane kit seemed like a really good idea at the time (actually, it purchased about 30 minutes of peace and quiet). Now there’s nothing but peace and quiet, and the sweet memory of what my 5 year-old-grandson said when I asked him what he liked best about his visit to St. Louis: being with Bubby and Zadie. —Dorothy F. Today, we use the words ‘fit as a fiddle’ to describe someone who is hale, hearty and in robust health. But back in the 15th century, when the phrase originated, ‘fit’ didn’t mean ‘in good physical shape.’ It meant ‘suitable.’ The phrase was originally ‘fine as a farthing fiddle,’ and first popped up in 1603 in Thomas Dekker’s The Bachelars Banquet, in reference to a nurse who was well-suited for her job. It first appeared in the form we know today in W. Haughton’s English-men for My Money, 1616: “This is excellent ynfayth (in faith), as fit as a fiddle.”

THANKS TO A GRANT FROM SEF, ONE SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS USED MATH, READING AND WOODWORKING SKILLS TO BUILD TOY TRAINS.

NEXT TO A PARENT, no one understands a child’s needs better than a caring teacher. This is particularly true when it comes to children with disabilities, who face enormous educational, emotional and social challenges. Teachers develop keen insights into methods that help kids learn more effectively. But often, school districts can’t afford anything beyond basic academic programs, and parents can’t afford to pay for enrichment activities. That’s where Special Education Foundation comes in. “SEF picks up where tax dollars leave off, providing scholarships, leadership training, specialized assistive equipment and programs that aren’t supported by taxes,” explains executive director Diane Buhr. Each year SEF, with help from the Dana Brown Charitable Trust, awards mini-grants to Special School District teachers for innovative projects that benefit students. More than 100 teachers apply annually. This year, SEF distributed $45,000 in grants, ranging from $300 to $3,000, to more than 50 projects, including ‘Learning By Doing: Teaching Life Skills One Toy at a Time.’ The six-week class, proposed by special ed teacher Jason Hertlein at Selvidge Middle School in the Rockwood School District, introduced eight boys to basic woodworking—and a lot more. “They didn’t care at first—you know how boys that age are,” Hertlein says. “But when we decided to make toy trains, everyone jumped on board.” His students relied on math and reading skills to figure out measurements and instructions. As they worked, they talked about the historical significance of trains. Science played a role, too, as they discussed the origins of their materials. “But the most valuable thing they learned was the importance of working together toward a common goal,” he says. Mini-grants also were awarded to SSD teachers to support book and gardening clubs, cooking classes that emphasize math and reading skills, physical fitness and wellness endeavors, and a broad array of cultural and community outreach experiences. “These activities help kids discover talents, build friendships, enhance skills and gain confidence that contributes to success,” Buhr says. SEF serves more than 5,000 students and families each year, but the list of youngsters in need keeps growing. The foundation is financially independent from Special School District and receives no support from United Way. “We rely on donations,” Buhr says. The annual Dan McLaughlin Golf Tournament and Dinner Auction, a major fundraiser, takes place Oct. 14 at Norwood Hills Country Club. Returning this year are Don Davis as chair, Bob Kijowski as co-chair and Karen Carter and Barbara Prueitt as coordinators. The tournament will be held in honor of the late Dennis Buhr, who co-chaired the event for 10 years. Hertlein is grateful to SEF. “The mini-grants help us make a positive difference in kids’ lives, and that’s why we went into teaching in the first place,” he says. “One of my students told me he feels good every time he looks at his train. ‘I built that!’ he said to me. ‘If I can do that, I guess I can do anything.’”

TALK [TOWNS] OF THE
by bill beggs jr.
If their kids are bitten by the rock ’n’ roll bug, most parents hope it takes them no farther than the garage. (Neighbors may wish all that racket had stayed in the basement.) But in Ballwin, they can follow their muse at 14560 Manchester Road, where the first area campus of the School of Rock is now open. And there’s good news for grown-up rockers, too: there are classes for adults. Ballwin is now one of more than 100 locations of the company, which started in the late 1990s in Philadelphia. (School of Rock shares the name of a 2003 film starring Jack Black, who slides into a teaching position at a private school in place of his roommate and teaches the kids the classics: Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC.) Lessons are geared to understanding and accepting the dynamics of playing in a band, with the first public performances slated for early next year. Students may be playing and singing Pink Floyd’s opus, The Wall, as well as British Invasion gems by the Kinks, Rolling Stones et al. You snooze, you lose. Ambitious plans for a freestanding genealogy center operated by St. Louis County Library are all for naught, as construction did not begin by the date stipulated in a conditional land donation by Sachs Properties. Six acres at Wild Horse Creek and Baxter roads in Chesterfield have reverted back to the company because ground was not broken by May on the $18 million project, Center for Family History, which was to be two stories and 63,000 square feet. Library officials say some $9 million in ‘soft’ donations never made it past verbal promises, but that $2.5 million pledged would go toward an expanded genealogy center at headquarters or a branch. Otherwise, it’s all systems go for the library, for which voters last fall passed a 6-cent property tax increase. And, the Sachs family remains committed. A donation of 1.25 acres adjacent to the Samuel Sachs Branch in Chesterfield will be used to create an outdoor reading garden. People with impaired vision and other disabilities have reason to cheer—and their support animals reason to bark—about the recent groundbreaking for a new $3.5 million training center and headquarters for Support Dogs Inc. in Creve Coeur. The center, with a 23,000-square-foot pawprint, is expected to be up and running at 10955 Linpage Place by next summer. The metro-area nonprofit celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Support dogs perform a variety of tasks for adults and children with disabilities that range from hearing loss to PTSD. SDI says the dogs’ presence in the classroom can help encourage kids to read, and the dogs can be therapeutic in many healthcare environments.
Two developments underway in Des Peres seem to indicate that folks out yonder a ways prefer ‘comfort’ food to growing their own. A stand-alone Russell Stover is set to open this fall at the site of the former Ahner’s, a florist that had been in operation at 11697 Manchester Road for more than 60 years. And the onetime site of Deutschmann Florist and Greenhouses, 12215 Manchester Road, is going to be home to Raising Cane’s, self-proclaimed as a ‘specialty’ chicken fingers restaurant. (For anyone foraging for fast food that’s just a little different, these are pretty good. Plus, the staff at the Chesterfield Mall location, at least, is uncommonly friendly.) MANCHESTER
Manchester The stately Lyceum, at 14318
Manchester Road, is the most eye-catching building for miles, among several other venerable structures in an architectural oasis surrounded by the formfollows-function construction of a chain-commercial wasteland, from auto dealerships and Arby’s to Dobbs and OfficeMax. Built in 1894, with an exterior of grey brick and white trim, it’s been on the National Register since 1979. A perfectly suitable space for Manchester City Hall, the building also figures prominently in the city logo. Closer inspection will reveal the grey ‘brick’ to be sections of tin siding painted who knows how many times over the years, like the white tin ceiling inside. The 2,600-square-foot ground floor was, at first, a tin shop. It was home for a time to the post office which, as legend has it, outlaw Jesse James held up. (However, no presidents are alleged to have slept here.) Theatrical presentations were once held on the second floor, as were newfangled motion pictures operated by a hand-cranked projector and accompanied by piano. The building also served as the place to go for square dancing, roller skating and maybe church services. Y’all come! A banner advertising music, food and

fun at the Manchester Homecoming this weekend (Sept. 6 to 8) hangs from the balcony. I’m embarrassed to admit that, having been a resident of the St. Louis metro since 1982, I had never been to the Jewel Box in Forest Park until a wedding in late August. It’s a remarkable space, resplendent with tropical flora, kind of like a miniature version of the Climatron at Missouri Botanical Garden. So, although it’s air-conditioned, it is humid. The wrinkles in my suit fell out in the first 10 minutes. It was a popular venue for getting hitched that day. As the previous wedding party was making its exit, chairs were being straightened for ours. (I mean for the event I attended—I’m still single, ladies!) Although the interior is beautiful, it’s the exterior that makes this place stand out. It was built in 1936, during the art deco period, and is now on the National Register. It was renovated in 2002, at a cost of $3.5 million. The water gardens outside are glorious. The three concrete reflecting pools in front of the greenhouse, which is more than 50 feet high, are filled with more than eight water-lily varieties and a half-dozen other species. No fauna in evidence, alas: The koi must have been running deep that day, and I spied nary a frog on the lily pads. The St. Louis Water Gardening Society is responsible for this impressive array of flora. SLWGS was established as a nonprofit in 1990 for area water gardeners and koi keepers to exchange info and techniques. Visit slwgs.org. ST. LOUIS

adjacent to Mason Woods Village, at Clayton and Mason roads. Then, abruptly, the company folded its tent. Seems it wasn’t so much a matter of fighting city hall as it was facing up to No Re-Zoning in Town & Country, the group of a couple hundred residents united to oppose Allegro—as well as a BJC Healthcare proposal for a pediatric outpatient center and ball fields at Maryville University. P&Z also gave BJC the |thumbs-down, but has passed along the ball fields proposal to the city with a thumbs-up. (Interestingly, the Allegro aerial rendering looks like a big black ‘X.’) In an iconic image of black humor, a 1970s National Lampoon issue cover featured the photo of a mutt with a gun to its head. The text: “If you don’t buy this magazine, we’ll shoot this dog.” Ridiculous, of course. Well, the ridiculous has come home to roost on Craigslist, an Internet haunt for knuckleheads to make all kinds of idle threats that some of them later get arrested for. It’s not clear whether there will be repercussions for this C-list poster, from Morrisonville, Ill., whose ad read (sic): ‘Dog needs gone or shot.’ Deadline: One day. A dog-lover from U. City didn’t want to take any chances, so reportedly she hopped in the car and made the 160mile round trip to retrieve the German shepherd mix— which she herself has no room for. She says she’ll take care of the canine until she can find it a good home. The proposal seemed like a slam dunk. Webster University had planned to move some programs across Lockwood Avenue to the Luhr Library and Wehrli Center at Eden Seminary. Gerry Welch, mayor of Webster Groves, supported it. But the measure failed, 4-3. Luhr Library, which has been vacant since 2009, would have been a good place for the university’s administration and information technology departments to expand, as well as the new home for Webster’s national champion chess team. The move would have included razing of a former home that was deemed unsuitable for renovation, in favor of more green space. The university and opposing residents have locked horns for several years: residents are concerned about property values, and the school was jockeying to please them. Honestly, what’s here for the haters to hate? WEBSTER GROVES (LUHR LIBRARY)

Intrigue, betrayal, bloodshed—the Torah was the original juicy bestseller! Now Rabbi Mark Leslie Shook has written a fact-based thriller, The Ezra Scroll, about the creation of the written Torah. The novel’s timeline ranges from 586 BCE to the recent U.S. occupation in Iraq, when a Marine sergeant discovers an ancient Hebrew scroll in Fallujah. Shook, former senior rabbi at Temple Israel, now serves as chaplain coordinator for St. Louis County Police Department and adjunct professor of Jewish Philosophy at Saint Louis University. The book is available at lulu.com.

COVER STORY
SPECIAL SOLUTIONS
by stephanie zeilenga LAST YEAR, A STRESSED MOTHER approached Special Solutions’ Shelley B. Smith with a problem. The school blamed her struggling son’s poor grades on laziness, and they were unwilling to work with her to find a solution. At Smith’s urging, the student was privately tested and diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. Now, with help from Special Solutions’ advocacy and education services, the sophomore shines in the classroom. These are the kinds of results Smith lives for. A retired teacher with a master’s degree in counseling, she started Special Solutions in 2008 with her husband, Tom. Originally founded as a tutoring service for students with learning disabilities or challenges, the business has since expanded to serve any student or adult who needs extra help. “Our business has evolved and grown through word-of-mouth,” Smith says. “Now we also work with kids who just want to do better in school.” Services include tutoring, ADHD coaching, ACT/SAT preparation, language and social skills coaching, and general counseling and assessment. Besides tutors trained to help with any subject, clients have access to counselors, speech/language pathologists, psychologists and psychiatrists. “We also accompany parents to meetings with school officials and make sure they know the right questions to ask,” Smith says. Special Solutions’ educational philosophy is that any student, armed with the right plan and support system, can succeed. “I believe there is a path for every child,” Smith says. The way to find that path is working with students to build long-lasting changes in habits, she explains. “We’re not interested in being a Band-Aid and just getting homework done. We look at a child’s routine and homework habits and we get involved at home and at school. We take the pressure off the parent by building a team where everyone knows the strengths and weaknesses of the student.” Initially started in the Smiths’ home, Special Solutions now has the Private Learning Center, a place designed to provide students with a one-on-one, distraction-free environment conducive to learning. “It’s not an institutional atmosphere,” Tom Smith says. “We have private, tranquil rooms with no music, phones or TV. We have a fully stocked kitchen where kids can grab a snack. They know that this is a place where they can get work done.” Special Solutions doesn’t shy away from creative problem-solving to help students find success, Shelley Smith notes. She recalls a student who failed his first reading comprehension exam for The Odyssey. Her suggestion to him: listen to the Greek epic on tape. “That student had a high IQ, but the school didn’t think outside the box,” she says. “That’s our job—thinking outside the box and making sure kids understand that just because they’re struggling with something, doesn’t mean they’re not smart.” SPECIAL SOLUTIONS IS LOCATED AT 9225 MANCHESTER ROAD, STE. 100. NEUROLOGY] [ SPECIAL SECTION
Our Expert Stroke Team Saves Lives
SLUCARE] COVER STORY
by tony di martino
IT STARTED WITH A SUDDEN TINGLING in her right arm, followed by increasing numbness. Jane, a 47-year-old insurance company executive, thought her arm had fallen asleep. But when she stood up to go to a meeting, she fell to the floor, her entire right side completely numb. Jane is one of 750,000 people who suffer a stroke each year. More than 140,000 of them die. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States—and the third leading cause of death. Jane was lucky. She got help right away from SLUCare, the physicians of Saint Louis University. “Hospitals throughout the region send their most extreme stroke cases to us,” says Dr. Eli Feen, assistant professor of neurology and psychiatry at SLU School of Medicine and medical director of SLUCare’s Souers Stroke Institute. “The expertise of our multidisciplinary stroke team, which includes neurologists, surgeons, emergency specialists and others, is second to none. We get almost 900 admissions a year, both from the area and from community hospitals throughout Missouri and Illinois.” After discharge, SLUCare experts work closely with the patient’s referring physicians to ensure continued recovery. There are two main types of stroke, Feen explains. “Ischemic stroke, the most common, occurs when an artery to the brain is blocked; hemorrhagic stroke is caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain. Both types kill blood cells and can cause brain damage, resulting in loss or disruption of speech, impaired vision, or paralysis in an arm or leg, depending on the part of the brain that’s affected.” To prevent permanent damage, get to a hospital as soon as possible. “Speed is crucial—the faster we assess and treat symptoms, the less brain damage occurs,” says Feen, who treats stroke patients at SLU Hospital. With prompt treatment and proper aftercare, many stroke patients recover completely or with minor impairments;

others experience moderate to severe impairments requiring special care. The hallmark of stroke is the sudden onset of symptoms, which can include weakness or numbness on one side of the body, trouble speaking or understanding speech, vision problems in one or both eyes, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, and severe headache. “Often, people experience symptoms for 20 or 30 minutes and then get ‘better,’” Feen says. “Well, they’re not better. They’ve had a transient ischemic stroke (TIA) and need to see a doctor right away, before they have a major stroke.” Stroke risk increases with age, doubling each decade after age 55. In addition to advanced age, risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and family history. Atrial fibrillation, or abnormal heart rhythm, is an independent risk factor for stroke, increasing risk about five-fold. “To prevent stroke later in life, start now,” Feen advises. “Stop smoking, eat healthy, lose excess weight, increase your physical activity and watch your cholesterol levels. Stroke can hit anyone at any age, not just the elderly.”

[ GETTING ON YOUR NERVES by mary konroy
Are you plagued by low back pain? ‘Swayed’ by inner ear problems? Do migraines cause you misery? If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of the above, we’ve got you covered in this edition. Read what local experts have to say about these and other nerve-related issues, including carpal tunnel syndrome, and find out the latest news about Parkinson’s disease.
[ oh, my aching back ] A strong core can prevent low back pain, and chiropractic manipulation can help relieve discomfort when it occurs. >> brett taylor, CHIROPRACTOR, ACCENT CHIROPRACTIC
Often patients with low back pain seek surgery as a fix. But back surgery is painful, invasive and expensive. Its results are inconsistent and a significant number of spine surgery patients do not find relief. There’s even a medical name for it: ‘failed back surgery syndrome,’ which isn’t really a syndrome, but simply new or persistent pain that occurs after back surgery. Its incidence is estimated at 20 to 40 percent. The Journal of the American Medical Association recently published an article suggesting that some people with low back pain try chiropractic care first. According to the article, surgery should be considered only if conservative approaches do not work. Chiropractic manipulation offers patients with low back pain an effective, drug-free and non-invasive treatment. We first perform a thorough spinal exam to identify the cause of the low back pain. Then we proceed with treatment, which includes chiropractic manipulation to get the joints moving as they should, and/or acupuncture to address pain. I use high- or low-force adjustments to realign the spine. Sometimes other therapies, such as laser and electro-stimulation treatments, are added.
>> dr. christopher hamm, MERCY CLINIC-INTERNAL MEDICINE
Lumbar or low back pain is one of the top five diagnoses seen by primary care physicians. Conservative estimates place the annual cost of the condition in the United States at $10 billion, not including missed workdays. Most low back pain is attributable to muscle spasms and muscle strain. However, disorders of the spinal column and the peripheral nerves also can be a source of pain. The good news is that the vast majority of cases are resolved within 30 to 40 days with conservative measures. But sometimes the problem is more serious. Seek immediate medical attention if low back pain is sudden or severe. It’s also a medical emergency if there is new or worsening back pain associated with a fever, if there is progressive weakness in the legs, or if back pain is accompanied by loss of bladder and/or bowel control. Keep your abdominal and back muscles strong. This helps prevent low back pain. When minor muscle strains occurs, try to stay active — as a slow walker. Extreme exercise is not appropriate.
parkinson’s disease // “Within the next five to seven years, we expect to prevent the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease from ever occurring,” says DEBBIE GUYER, ST. LOUIS CHAPTER, AMERICAN PARKINSON DISEASE ASSOCIATION. That was a highlight of the organization’s recent national leadership conference in Nashville. Tremors and slow movements are common and disabling motor symptoms of the disease, Guyer notes. “They’re caused by an insufficient level of dopamine, a chemical messenger produced in the brain important for smooth, coordinated muscle movement,“ she explains. “About 70 percent of the dopamine level in patients with Parkinson’s is depleted before symptoms appear.” New ways to deliver medications to treat Parkinson’s were also discussed at the meeting. They include an intestinal pump, similar to what some diabetics use, and a skin patch that provides medication continuously instead of taking pills at regular intervals. “We’re also working on new imaging techniques that allow physicians to make a diagnosis before symptoms occur, and developing a disease profile to identify younger patients who may be at risk,” Guyer says. “We have the ability to intervene before symptoms occur, to slow progression of Parkinson’s and to reduce its severity. It’s an exciting time.”

When we see people who have sudden-onset dizziness, the inner ear is often the culprit. Two inner ear conditions associated with dizziness include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and labyrinthitis. The first causes a sensation of intense spinning that’s triggered by specific head movements. It could occur when you turn your head, look under a table, or roll over in bed. It occurs when tiny crystals in the ear become dislodged. We can reposition crystals back in place with certain in-office movements. Sometimes the patient has to return for another treatment. Labyrinthitis occurs when the labyrinth, which is part of the inner ear that helps control balance, becomes swollen and inflamed. It often follows a virus. Some people with labyrinthitis also hear a buzzing sound. This condition usually goes away on its own, but if it persists, a special form of physical therapy called vestibular rehabilitation helps retrain the brain to adjust to the imbalance.

Many people think acute or sudden-onset vertigo is a stroke. But generally, this form of dizziness is temporary and caused by an inflammation. Persistent or frequent episodes of vertigo are different. They can be related to aging or symptomatic of a stubborn viral infection; Meniere’s disease (an inner ear disorder characterized by dizziness, ringing in the ears and a feeling of fullness in one ear); a tumor at the base of the skull; or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (dizziness resulting from damage to the balance portion of the inner ear). Medication also can cause vertigo. Motion sickness occurs when the brain has difficulty syncing what the inner ear feels and what the eyes see. Patients can avoid the activity that prompts the sensation, learn to live with it or expose themselves to the activity repeatedly to become desensitized. Another option is vestibular (inner ear) rehabilitation to identify and stimulate areas of weakness. Chronic imbalance or dizziness is not normal, especially when accompanied by hearing loss. You need to be evaluated. I recommend a neurotologist, an inner ear specialist.
carpal tunnel // “Wrist pain by itself is not symptomatic of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS),” says DR. DANIEL PHILLIPS, THE NEUROLOGICAL & ELECTRODIAGNOSTIC INSTITUTE OF ST. LOUIS. But wrist pain accompanied by numbness and/or tingling in one or both hands can be. “Losing one’s grip is another possible symptom of CTS, as is wrist pain that wakes one up during sleep,” says the clinical electrophysiologist, whose patients include several Major League pitchers. After taking a patient’s personal history, Phillips conducts and interprets sophisticated nerve and electrical tests to confirm the diagnosis of neurological conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, which is caused by a compressed media nerve in the wrist. “Patients with suspected CTS need a full nerve study, not a simple test that only looks for one or two conditions,” he says. The nerve conduction velocity test shows how well a nerve sends electrical signals. The electromyography test checks the electrical activity of the muscles and helps rule out other conditions. “The first thing I do is exclude conditions that mimic carpal tunnel, such as pinched nerve in the neck, herniated disc, multiple sclerosis or a vascular problem,” he explains. An early and accurate diagnosis of CTS is important to avoid permanent nerve damage, Phillips notes. “Check if the doctor performing your test is board certified by the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM),” he adds.

[ migraine misery ] Overuse of over-the-counter medication for migraines can actually cause a ‘rebound’ headache. Poor posture can trigger a headache that might turn into a migraine. >> dr. rachel darken, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF NEUROLOGY,
WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Migraines can range from a daily, debilitating occurrence to an annual or semi-annual event. People who have occasional, acute episodes can try over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen, or a migraine-specific prescription pain medication, such as triptans, for symptom relief. But overuse of these products can cause a headache called a ‘rebound’ headache. This is especially true if the product has been ‘fortified.’ Excedrin Migraine tablets are an example. If migraines occur frequently and require the patient to take medications often, such as a couple of times a week, or to miss work, it’s time to see a neurologist. These patients may need a preventive strategy. They may need to be on a daily medication, such as topiramate, to reduce the frequency and severity of their migraines. Botox is also useful in treating chronic migraines. The FDA approved its application a few years ago. It involves 31 injections to the forehead, temples, back of the head, and the neck and shoulders. Injections are given every three months. This strategy is meant for the person who doesn’t respond to other migraine medications and who has severe headaches at least 15 days of each and every month.

HANDS ON HEALTH There’s a relationship between neck pain and migraines. Stress occurring at the cervical spine — the area where the back of the neck meets the base of the skull — can trigger a headache that can turn into a migraine. I ask patients with recurrent headaches when and where their pain began. Then I do an exam and palpate that area. If the cervical spine muscles are involved, I often find knots under the skin, which are trigger points. Applying direct pressure on them recreates the head pain temporarily. Posture plays a pivotal role. Patients need to understand the relationship of posture to neck and head pain. Computer chairs, head supports in cars, even airline seats can result in poor posture that can prompt a headache. A cushion could be a simple fix. Lifestyle changes, including a program to strengthen the mid-back muscles, can also help. In chiropractic, we use hands-on work, including special muscle work in areas where there’s tightness. Spinal manipulation is used to improve neck mobility and interrupt the headache, and acupuncture is used to target pain. A combination of hands-on work and lifestyle changes can profoundly influence how people feel and help them avoid future headaches.

[TREND REPORT FALL FOR RED LIPS by marylyn simpson | photo by charles barnes
SPICE UP YOUR FALL BEAUTY ROUTINE
with the season’s red-hot lip colors. From fiery tones to deep rouges, reds are far from monochromatic. But choosing the red that’s right for you may require a bit of time and research. Red runs the gamut, with some leaning orange, others moving toward purple. Here’s a quick guide to finding the best reds the season has to offer.
[ WINE TIME ] >> KAPLAN MD VELVET WINE SPARKLE LIP 20 GLOSS
Sometimes a sophisticated shade of red is all you need to make a statement. Kaplan MD Lip 20 Gloss in Velvet Wine Sparkle lives up to its name with deep merlot undertones and a shimmering finish. The combination of SPF 20, certified organic extracts and marine collagen leaves your lips protected and plump, and you can’t beat that lineup! BERGDORFGOODMAN.COM, NEIMANMARCUS.COM, KAPLANMD.COM, $30
[ RUBY RED ] >> STILA RUBY COLOR BALM LIPSTICK
There’s no denying the draw of a classic red lipstick. Stila’s Color Balm Lipstick in Ruby is a beautiful shade. A touch of coral makes this a great transitional color. Wear it with a swipe of mascara or a full smokey eye. FINE DEPARTMENT STORES, $22
[ AGENT PROVOCATEUR ] >> SEPHORA LONG-LASTING VINYL LIP LACQUER IN PROVOCATIVE RED
In need of intense color? Sephora has you covered this fall with its Long-Lasting Vinyl Lip Lacquer in Provocative Red. Its deep red tones impart a surge of sex appeal, thanks to the potent pops of pink and endless shine. Vitamin E leaves your lips feeling soft and silky, never goopy or heavy. SEPHORA, $14
[ SO SHEER ] >> KORRES WILD ROSE LIP BUTTER
If you’re in the market for a sheer red that’s easy to wear, look no further than Korres’ Wild Rose Lip Butter. Packed with moisturizing natural oils and extracts, this will keep your lips smoothed and supple with each wear. A hint of brown makes Wild Rose a great red alternative for fairer skin tones and perfect for fall’s post-beach skin. SEPHORA, $12
[ DEEP AND DRAMATIC ] >> MAVALIA LIPSTICK IN GERANIUM
While some reds work well for both day and night, sometimes you need a deep red designed for evening events. Mavalia’s Geranium lipstick is a deep rouge that’s as dramatic as it is wearable. Soft to the touch, this product keeps lips fully hydrated while a velvet-like finish leaves them full of color and texture. A bold color that works well with light to dark skin tones, Geranium is a must-have for the fall beauty closet. LADUE PHARMACY, $15

FRINGE BANGS
by marylyn simpson
Forget side-swept bangs; fringe bangs are back and taking over fall trends, one celebrity at a time. Who could forget Lauren Conrad’s July Marie Claire cover or Jessica Alba’s recent red carpet appearances? Dramatic and uber-chic, fringe bangs are an easy alternative to a full haircut or a complete color change. Unlike many hairstyles, fringe bangs work for almost any hair type, cut and age group. Tony Kuykencall at Robert Ramsey Hair says he sees women of all ages requesting fringe bangs, but for different reasons. While 20-somethings tend to be more adventurous with their fringe shape, others want a fuller bang with less room for shaping and more emphasis on covering. “A lot of women change it for what they want to cover or what they want done,” he says. “Younger girls go with different shapes of the bang, while middle-aged women want to cover their foreheads, specifically,” says Kuykencall. Knowing how to style your fringe bangs according to your individual cut is the key to keeping on trend. Whether your hair is long or short, thick or thin, start the styling process with wet hair, advises LeeAnn Deschenes of BeSalon. Using a blow dryer and paddle or oval brush, pull the hair from the root. Not quite ready to part with long locks? Worry not: knowing how to style thick fringe bangs can give women with long hair a completely updated look that requires little attention and even less cutting. Deschenes advices thicker-haired women with longer locks use more product when styling blunt bangs. “To tame thicker, more frizzy hair, try spritzing a straightener like Matrix’s Thermal Styling Mist and blow dry them in a side-to-side motion flat against your forehead. Thicker, longer hair works better for a blunt fringe, whereas thinner finer hair is better suited for a wispy or side-swept look,” Deschenes says. She recommends women with round faces, short hair or thinner hair go with wisp-like bangs because fringe bangs tend to fall flat when hair is less voluminous. The wisp approach requires less maintenance and keeps the cut from looking prematurely tired and unkempt. “I recommend first blow-drying to the opposite side you want the bangs to fall until they are about 80 percent dry. Softly, with your brush or hand, finish blow drying them to the side where you want them. This will help you achieve the ‘swooping’ effect everyone is looking for,” Deschenes says. “I believe almost all haircuts can have a version of a fringe. I have clients with long layers who have a blunt fringe and some with a wispy fringe. A shorter bob also could go both ways.” Once you’ve determined the best bangs for your hair type, remember that regular trims are necessary to keep bangs looking fresh and out of the eyes. Many stylists offer free trims, and who can say no to that?

JOBS >> It’s hard to look past the flaws in Jobs. The film
depicts the life of Apple’s Steve Jobs, portrayed by Ashton Kutcher, from his time as a student at Reed College in 1974 to the 2001 introduction of the iPod. The movie would have been more engaging as a character study on Jobs, known to be a charismatic yet hotheaded visionary who helped shape the modern world. Instead, it is mired down by the business’ dramatic history, a story many are already familiar with. Another problem: Kutcher’s acting. He gets points for trying, but the role is simply beyond his range. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Save it for a Red Box night. —S.Z. VIEWED AT CHASE PARK PLAZA CINEMAS

Panther meetings, apartheid protests … The Butler has the Civil Rights movement covered. Based very loosely on the real life of a long-serving White House butler, the movie ambitiously attempts to portray how, to paraphrase Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the long arc of the moral universe bends toward justice. It is mostly successful, but the force of its history lesson comes at the expense of all subtlety. The all-star cast was fun to watch but ultimately a little distracting; I found myself marveling at Robin Williams’ portrayal of Eisenhower and John Cusack’s turn as Nixon more than listening to their lines. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Yes, it’s a good refresher on the Civil Rights movement. —R.K. VIEWED AT THE MOOLAH THEATRE

When a tooth is missing and isn’t replaced, the jawbone supporting that tooth has no purpose and will begin to shrink. What follows is: • the teeth begin to shift; • chewing is shifted to other teeth, causing them to wear faster; • 20% of adjacent teeth will be lost within 4 to 8 years; and • the bone shrinks, leading to a collapsing facial appearance.
Getting a dental implant is a big decision. Implants are the modern solution to tooth replacement and no other option will preserve the jawline and maintain your facial structure. Call us today for a complimentary consultation with Dr. peter pagano.

YOU IMMEDIATELY REALIZE this place was something else in another lifetime, but you’re not sure what. The room is massive, with very high ceilings and those round wrought iron chandeliers Zorro used to swing from. It all makes sense when you find out this was the Lemp Brewery stable, where they kept their beer wagons and the horses that clopped the brick walks delivering those 19th-century brews around town. Established in 1840, the brewery is across the street, and the infamous Lemp Mansion is two blocks away. Husband and wife team Cassy Vires and Josh Renbarger have turned it into an appealing eatery, with long communal tables (hence the name ‘Table’), a big old bar at one end and a killer patio— wrought iron gates intact. The food, as at their other restaurant (Home Wine Kitchen), is farm-to-table. Every dish is fresh, most made with local provisions, and all are playfully experimental (predominantly with favorable results). They recommend starting with ‘bites,’ offered three for $12 or six for $20. In keeping with the communal table concept, these are little nibbles meant for sharing while relaxing with wine, beer or cocktail. The whole
Table idea revolves around savoring your food—and your company—even if they’re total strangers. Our Spicy Deviled Eggs, Rosemary-Parmesan Popcorn and Marinated Shrimp were very good, but when they say ‘bite,’ they mean it. The egg consisted of two halves filled with fluffy, mustardy yolks; the popcorn (my favorite) was infused with bits of pungent rosemary and sharp parmesan; and the shrimp (dining partner’s fave) were two not-verybig tail-ons deeply seeped in Asian flavors, I believe seven-spice powder—tasty but a little mealy after the long marinating process. Our Rye Whisky Smoked Trout ($8) had the faintest hint of smoked whiskey barrel chips. The sliced fennel, tossed with the fish in a sweet light vinegar bath, didn’t obscure that flavor, but the raw red onions in there did. And the dish cried out for something chewy to go with it—ideally black or rye bread. This was one of the dishes that simply was too stingy. Needing more sustenance, we went on to the bigger dishes listed under ‘Feast.’ The Braised Lamb Shank ($20) was generous and very flavorful, with a large,

well-browned and crisped shank sitting over polenta in a sweetened pan-jus with red grapes. The polenta was sweet and creamy, more like a decadent dessert. Whole Roasted Fish ($25), was the piéce de rèsistance, presented in a hotel half-pan with grilled okra and delectably charred red onions and green tomatoes. There was something earthy and wholesome about this presentation, as if to say, Here’s the fish, just as it was taken right off the line. The whole, skin-on, head-on Dorado (in the sea bass family) was tender and sweet, its natural flavor enhanced only by the grilled lemon and lime halves scattered in the pan. Pork wraps ($24) were outstanding, with cubes of delicately seasoned roasted pork piled onto lettuce leaves, ready for wrapping. Here again, though: not enough food. For dessert we had Apricot Blueberry Cobbler ($6) and Cucumber-Mint Ice Cream ($6), both a credit to the kitchen. The cobbler had a sweet, fruity self-sauce and a few crusty biscuits dropped on top. The ice cream burst with both its flavors, and the bits of cucumber skin and spearmint leaves, were proof that it’s the real deal. Not that we would doubt it here for a minute.

COVER STORY
RED KEY] REALTY by stephanie zeilenga
A FAMILY’S HOME IS THEIR CASTLE, their own tiny corner of the world. That’s why Red Key Realty, a locally owned, independent real estate company founded in 2012, strives to make every buyer and seller feel like royalty, says CEO Jill Butler. From its conception, Red Key Realty was envisioned as a different kind of real estate company, one that would transform the client experience through highly qualified agents with a passion for the personal touch, according to Butler, who has more than a decade of experience in the industry. “I wanted to start a local, independent brand as an alternative to the big-box real estate experience,” she explains. “We attract experienced agents who are experts in our local market and marketing. They are focused on certain neighborhoods so they can serve as a resource to clients who are new to the area.” Butler’s vision for a unique real estate company has paid off, she says, calling Red Key Realty the fastest-growing real estate business in the St. Louis market. As of June, it ranked 19th in sales volume among almost 2,000 ranked offices in the area. Knowing how emotional and momentous buying a home can be, Red Key has launched some innovations. “For real estate agents who buy and sell homes all day long, it’s a normal thing,” Butler says. “But for people buying a house, which could be their first home or maybe their dream house, it’s a huge, exciting thing in their life and we want to make that special. So after someone purchases a home, our agent picks them up in our limo to celebrate and have some champagne.” Red Key takes an innovative approach to its agents, as well, Butler says. To offer

them a high level of training, the company recently brought in a prestigious training course focused on high-end property sales from the Dallas-based Institute for Luxury Home Marketing. The company is also in the process of expanding its Frontenac office. Set to open later this fall, the new space was designed to increase productivity and collaboration. It will include a meditation room, a lounge for clients and collaborative spaces. “We did a lot of looking at best practices and are imitating what some of the tech companies in California do and adapting it to St. Louis,” Butler says. Red Key’s innovative approach to clients and agents, and its passion for local real estate, have positioned the company well for continued growth, Butler says. “We are passionate about creating the best real estate company in St. Louis,” she says. “We tend to attract agents who have that same passion and drive and who don’t see it as a numbers game. They see their clients as people, and they want to serve them.”

[HOMEWORK: DEAR HOMEWORK,
My concern is that our house looks dwarfed on a sea of lawn. (The drive comes in from the right side as you look at the house.) We have thought about adding a circle drive to improve convenience to the front entry and break up the front yard a bit, but we’re not sure our budget will allow for this right now. If we decide to invest in a new drive, would it be best to match it with the current concrete drive? We had our big pin oak trimmed so we could see the house better, but it still doesn’t seem to show well from the street. Sincerely,
DEAR LOST AT SEA,
———LOST AT SEA
PHASE I
First, I would alter the landscaping closest to the façade. The main change here is the addition of a tall evergreen tree at the garage wing, which creates a powerful and necessary vertical accent, while covering up only a blank brick wall. Often, homeowners will plant small evergreens, not realizing they will grow into large, feature-blocking evergreens. In this case, however, I am intentionally using the evergreen as a kind of tower to make up for the façade’s lack of vertical accent. Additionally, you will note a more interconnected series of foundation plantings which flow from one grouping to the next, all kept low enough not to block the windows or porch columns.
From the various photos you sent, I see what you mean about your house being lost in the vast expanse of front yard. The simple, horizontal lines of your ranch-style home do not exactly ‘preside’ over the landscape. Yet, I see areas for possible improvement. Enjoy your possibilities. ———HOMEWORK

PHASE II
Next, I show a stone retaining wall that, from a distance, makes the house feel twice as tall and more connected to the site. This arrangement also works with the right-side parking area shown in your other photos. With the cascading plants, the wall is both a landscape and architectural feature that gives the house a great deal more presence.
PHASE III
Finally, the wall is rearranged to work with a new circle driveway. The steps leading up to the front door, framed by light piers, connect the retaining walls to the architecture of the house and the new driveway. The integrated composition now makes the residence feel like the property’s most important piece and better able to hold its own on the extensive landscape.

Proudly Presents...
ORBIT PINBALL LOUNGE
The flashing and dinging of a dozen machines in the handsome back room at Orbit Pinball Lounge enlivens Maplewood’s late-night scene. This arcade with attitude is for adults only—especially those pinball wizards with fond memories of afternoons spent sharpening their flipper reflexes. Owner Mike Stivers is humble about his first-ever business venture, modeled after a pinball bar in his college town of Lawrence, Kan. “We’re just a small place for people to come, have some drinks, play some games and do something a little different from the normal St. Louis scene,” he says. Finding the right equipment required research and a few treks. “With pinball machines, you have to kind of look for them,” Stivers explains. “I’ve driven to Chicago, Kansas City and Nashville to pick up older games that have been used.” He found the Skee-Ball games for sale on eBay from a seller in Kentucky. Players may elect to battle the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Star Wars stormtroopers or rack up points at the Elvis, Lord of the Rings, Addams Family and Austin Powers machines. Monday nights find teams of four competing in Skee-Ball league tournaments. And for those who prefer their entertainment sitting down, there are several board games available.
RYAN HUMMERT MEMORIAL PARK
Thick green grass draws all kinds of players to Ryan Hummert Memorial Park: soccer, baseball and the plain ol’ playground variety. Late summer heat doesn’t deter them from gathering in the oasis tucked away off Maplewood’s main street. Renamed in 2008 for a young firefighter killed in the line of duty, the park draws such a crowd on nice evenings that parking space is scarce. Bands perform for families in lawn chairs during the Wednesday evening concert series. St. Louis Pick Up Soccer players practice passes while avoiding baseballs the Little Leaguers hit into the outfield. Barbecuers fire up the grill and enjoy their picnics under shady pavilions. It’s an idyllic shared space that would make any urban planner proud.

ORBIT PINBALL LOUNGE
RYAN HUMMERT MEMORIAL PARK
A dozen people are lined up outside when manager Daniel Kinsella opens the door at 11 a.m. each Wednesday. It’s new comic book day at Fantasy Shop Comics & Games, and nearly 90 fresh titles await eager readers, some of whom subscribe to their favorites series. The recession may have hurt many leisure industries, but according to Kinsella, the inexpensive escapism comic books offer makes them as popular as ever. “The superhero was created in the Great Depression, as a way to escape reality,” he says. Board game aficionados, superhero fanatics and story lovers of all sorts have flocked to Fantasy Shop Comics & Games for more than 30 years. Magic players congregate on Friday nights for officially FANTASY SHOP COMICS AND GAMES sanctioned tournaments. “One of my regulars works at a local bakery and brings lots of pies and cookies,” the manager says. Kinsella credits the renewed interest in board games to the lackluster economy, with families forgoing pricier plans for at-home pizza and game nights. Additionally, he hypothesizes many parents prefer board games to video games: “Most adults grew up playing board games, and they can pass that to their kids.” Comic books are appealing not only for their fantasy, Kinsella says, but also their pertinence. Because they come out monthly, their storylines tend to be timely. “Movies, novels and TV shows have such long lead times that they’re not very relevant,” he explains. “[Comic book] writers are dealing with news topics on the fly. They can reflect culture in ways most other media can’t. That makes it a unique art form.”

Q | Why did you decide to tear down and rebuild? A | My husband probably lived in that house for 10 years. We had plans to renovate it, but when we put the plans out to bid, the infrastructure was too far gone and it would have been too costly. As we got into it, there were a lot of structural issues we didn’t know about. We toyed with the idea of moving because we didn’t want to knock it down. But it would have sold as a tear-down. We really loved the neighborhood and the street. We’re close to downtown, close to Kirkwood Park. We decided, We’ll just do it ourselves. Of course, then you’re given a blank piece of paper and asked, What do you want? Q | What did you want? A | There’s an architect, Sarah Susanka, with a book called The Not-So-Big House. People have all these big homes with formal spaces, living rooms and dining rooms, that no one uses. Her basic concept is to do away with the formal living rooms and dining rooms and just have these areas you live in. We’re not extremely formal, we wanted something that felt very warm and comfortable and welcoming. Q | Tell me about your design process. A | We found an architect in town, Kevin Kerwin—that’s how it all developed. The other thing we spent a lot of time doing was looking at pictures. We went to visit houses, and we would pull things out we really liked. We had a wonderful builder who put in a lot of great details. Q | What details in particular? A | We have a really nice bench that I love in our kitchen; it’s a perfect place. Because
OPPOSITE PAGE: The backyard swing and double-decker porch THIS PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Curved staircase and foyer; pocket doors and library; kitchen with built-in bench (foreground)
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Living room with pizza oven (next to fireplace); cedar shingles on exterior; second-story porch with hammock
the house is open, people can sit right in the kitchen on that bench. My daughter hangs out there a lot. Of course we have our pizza oven, which is built right next to the fireplace. That’s been a big form of entertainment for us; we’ll have pizza parties. Those are little added things that make the house a little different. Q | The curved staircase is beautiful, whose idea was it? A | Our builder brought in a lot of wonderful craftsmen to help us. We originally had plans for it to be a straight staircase, and I commented how I love the curve. “You can easily curve this,” he said, and he laid it out on the floor for me. I got really excited. It kind of invites you to go upstairs. There’s a really slight little curve, which I think is elegant. They’re all very skilled craftsmen and they brought many of their own thoughts to the process. Q | Are those shingles on the exterior? A | We went with cedar shingle siding because; we wanted something a little different, and we really liked that look. It’s a white cedar shingle on the outside, with a stone wall across the front of
the house, which is my husband’s labor of love. A lot of the influences are from Connecticut, where he and his family spend a lot of time. Q | Tell me about the porch with the hammock. A | That’s our screened porch up on the second floor, and it’s like being in a tree house. It’s off our master bedroom, and it’s our favorite place to go and just hide. The sad thing about rooms like that is life is so busy, you don’t get to enjoy them. It’s stacked above a screened porch down below, which we use all the time for eating at night. Q | How did you preserve the historical flavor that was in the previous house? A | We had to take down an old house, which was really heartbreaking, because we really love the old feel. We treasure the old historic architecture. My husband’s very tall, so he likes tall ceilings. All the doors have windows built into the top to give that same transom effect. Our old house also had pine floors, which we loved, but the pine was going to be too soft for us, so we went with birch for the floors. Sometimes I describe it as a contemporary house with a traditional feel.

SEPTEMBER 4, 2013
RYAN SHAKOFSKY, leader of a top team at Coldwell Banker Premier Group, is one of those rare individuals who went directly into real estate right after college. “I developed a passion for it while I was getting my business degree at Mizzou,” he recalls. That passion has paid off: at the midyear point, he and his team had already scored more than $20 million in sales. He and wife Rachel, a pediatrician at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, live with their two kids in Creve Coeur. I grew up in St. Louis. I wanted to play for the Cardinals, like my hero, Ozzie Smith. I never seriously considered any other career. One of my favorite profs at Mizzou was all about real estate. I took every elective I could with him. I’ll never forget my first sale. We sold a home in the city at list price on the first day. I still remember the exact address! It felt great. I was off to a good start. There’s a lot more to being a successful agent than planting a sign in a yard and hoping the house sells. It takes hard work, an understanding of the market, a passion for helping people, and a good team. I rely on my team (Larry Drury, Drew Vigil, Lora Robinson, Jeff Dauer and Lora Robinson). This is an awesome job, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re thinking about becoming an agent, do your homework and be prepared to work hard. I haven’t hit my stride yet. I’m constantly looking to the future, implementing strategies for situations we haven’t faced yet. St. Louis is a big city with a small-town feel. Reputation really counts here and word gets around. That’s why I’m so proud that 95 percent of our business comes from referrals. Technology is an amazing marketing tool, enabling us to work more quickly and efficiently and extend the range of services we can provide. But you’ve got to stay ahead of the curve, or you won’t stay on top. Real estate is definitely the right job for me. But if I could hit a 100-mile-anhour fastball, I might be persuaded to consider a career in baseball! My favorite way to unwind is anything sports-related, whether it’s golf or watching a game on TV with my family. My greatest fulfillment is spending time with my wife and kids.
