[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] Fashion is a big part of Town & Style. It’s half of our name, after all, and was part of our founding mission four years ago. Right there at the ground floor with us was our style team: the Suzys. That’s what we have affectionately called them from day one, even though everyone else knows them as statuesque, onetime model/stylist Suzy Bacino and photographer extraordinaire Suzy Gorman. Thanks to them, our fashion pages are second to none. So we couldn’t let this issue’s Fall Fashion section come and go without saying a big thank you to Suzy Bacino, who is leaving us to pursue her other interests. Suzy’s fashion sensibilities, dedication and professionalism have ensured Town & Style a respected place on the local fashion scene. Thanks to the Suzys, the T&S fashion team has always had a reputation for creativity and perfectionism. They’re so dedicated to their creative vision for each month’s fashion spread that we have always known better than to change anything on those pages; the way the Suzys shot it, styled it and laid it out needed no improvement. We’ve found a wonderful new style editor to work alongside Suzy Gorman, but Suzy B. will always remain part of the T&S family. And I think I speak for all of us when I say we can never look at shortshorts and cowboy boots without thinking of her. We wish her tons of luck in her continued path as singer/songwriter with the country band Whiskey Morning—you can hear her at Stovall’s Sept. 13 and 14. (Isn’t shameless promotion part of what family does for one another?)

COVER STORY FRIENDS OF THE
RURAL PARISH WORKERS by tony di martino
PARTS OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, MO., look like a storybook forest, with flowers blooming everywhere and woodland creatures drinking from a sparkling pond. If you were casually driving by the area, located about 45 minutes southwest of St. Louis County, you’d never guess that unemployment is high and many residents can’t afford food, utilities and other necessities. But more than 70 years ago, LaDonna Hermann stopped her car—and never left. Hermann co-founded the Rural Parish Workers of Christ the King, a group of Catholic women who devote their lives to helping the poor. Based at St. Michael House in Fertile, Mo., they assist more than 3,000 residents annually with basic needs such as food, clothing, medical supplies and shelter, and they partner with area leaders to create solutions for economic problems. Services include a food pantry, self-help work programs, and educational, religious and social activities. “These women are committed to improving the quality of life for these families,” explains Maura Houseworth of Friends of the Rural Parish Workers, an organization dedicated to supporting the nonprofit’s efforts. “They are phenomenal human beings, so kind and loving. They never turn anyone away. If your child is sick and needs a doctor or if you need gas money to get to a job interview, they’re there for you. They restore the dignity and self-respect of everyone they encounter.” The group receives financial assistance from the Archdiocese of St. Louis, but much of its funding comes from the annual Friends of the Rural Parish Workers Luncheon and Fashion Show. This year’s event, co-chaired by Houseworth and Therese Hagemeister, takes place Sept. 26 at The Ritz-Carlton. “We have something for everyone, from fun boutiques you can browse with your friends to fabulous raffle

items and door prizes donated by high-end local merchants,” Houseworth says. Boutiques open at 10 a.m., followed by cocktails and lunch. The runway show, produced by StLouisInStyle.com and hosted by Guy Phillips and Kathy Ferrara, features the latest fall fashions from Chesterfield Mall and West County Center. Participating stores include Charming Charlie, Francesca’s, H&M, and White House|Black Market at both malls; American Girl, Camille La Vie, Dillard’s, Hot Mama, and Monsoon Children at Chesterfield Mall; and Cache, Gap/Gap Kids, Geranium and The North Face at West County Center. “I’ve been producing this show more than 10 years,” says Sean Phillips, founder of StLouisInStyle and regional marketing director of CBL & Associates Properties, which owns and operates Chesterfield Mall and West County Center. “I’m honored to help support the work of this wonderful organization.” A highlight of this year’s luncheon will be a tribute to Workers co-founder LaDonna Hermann, who died recently at age 96. “I saw her just a few weeks before she passed away, and she was still hard at work,” Houseworth recalls. “She gave us all a hug, and her smile lit up the room. By supporting the community she and the Workers built, we can make sure her spirit lives on.”

BOOKSHELF PLAZA READERS
by stephanie zeilenga
ABOUT THE CLUB Stories bring us together, which is perhaps why so many women, seeking an expanded social circle, form book clubs. For a group living in The Plaza in Clayton, it was precisely a desire for a more connected community that led to the founding of the Plaza Readers 10 years ago. Today, the women continue to meet regularly. They come from a variety of backgrounds, which keeps discussions interesting, says member Amanda Murphy. “We’re a diverse population in terms of our experiences and what we like to read, so that makes it rewarding,” she says. Recently, local author Vida Prince was invited to join the Plaza Readers for a discussion of Prince’s That’s the Way It Was: Stories of Struggle, Survival and Self-Respect in Twentieth-Century Black St. Louis. Prince and Murphy met at an annual Women of Achievement meeting, where Murphy spoke about her life’s work providing mental health services to the poor and uninsured through the development of the Amanda L. Murphy Hopewell Center. “When Vida heard me speak, she was impressed with what I said, and I was impressed with her, too,” Murphy says. “Now we’re working together to get her book in all the public libraries.” ABOUT THE BOOK This series of oral histories was compiled by Vida Prince, who has been researching and collecting people’s stories for more than three decades. It gives firsthand accounts of racism and segregation experienced by African-Americans in 20th century St. Louis.
[ opinions ]
>> “This was a nostalgic read and evoked many childhood memories of street names, places and
stores. I grew up on Fountain Ave., between Aubert and Euclid avenues, and would sometimes go downtown on the bus or service cars to have lunch at Famous, Stix or Scruggs. Sad to say, I never realized how unfairly the black customers were treated.” — RUTH SANDLER
>> “The individuals sharing their stories are strong, vulnerable and bitingly honest—a difficult and valuable perspective. To survive the evils of segregation with such grace and self-knowledge is a testament to the efforts of loving parents, dedicated teachers and a rich sense of community.” — LIONELLE ELSESSER

TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.
You might want to eat light before visiting Chesterfield and the Taste of St. Louis Sept. 19 through 21, because there will be more to enjoy than you can shake a spatula at. Three days of fun, food and music will CHESTERFIELD
be featured in Chesterfield’s Central Park, with Food Network stars Tyler Florence appearing Friday night and Duff Goldman on Saturday night in Chesterfield Amphitheater. Florence has starred in some of the nuttiest shows anywhere on TV, from The Great Food Truck Race to Food Court Wars. Goldman and his team have baked … well, constructed, imaginative cakes for special events that defy comprehension. One wonders how they survive the trip from oven to destination in the delivery van. Big-name musical entertainment is featured Friday and Saturday nights, the former headlining Big Head Todd & the Monsters (they’re great) and the latter with The Urge (they’re epic!) in the spotlight. Plus, there’s fireworks! Chef battles! Food! Drink! And crowds! Tickets are required for amphitheater shows featuring the Food Network stars and big-name bands, but much of the event—now in its 10th year—is free. We were, however, amused by some of the marketing materials that have ‘amphitheater’ misspelled as ‘amphitehater.’ Once a copy editor, always a copy editor... The TV news story says Dennis Hirsch suffered a heart attack and died while walking in Eureka’s Kircher Park. But he was revived by two bystanders who stayed with him until an ambulance arrived to get him to the ER, where staff stabilized him. In a special ceremony at the hospital, Kircher recently got the chance to acquaint himself with the two men who happened to be at the right place at the right time. Dennis Luther was playing Frisbee golf; Chris Bredahl, a Boy Scout leader, was riding his bicycle. They performed CPR with the help of the 911 dispatcher, and after Hirsch was whisked away, went their separate ways. When each saw the TV news piece about Hirsch wishing to meet the men who saved
OF THE
his life, they reconnected with him. Hirsch most likely would have died were it not for the quick response of his saviors. Do they only come out at night? In the case of a costumed robber of a Walgreens on North Kirkwood Road recently, they came out in the wee hours of the morning. Armed robbery is no joke, but a surveillance image from 2:42 a.m. shows one of three male drugstore robbers all dolled up in a laugh-worthy woman’s outfit that he could have assembled from his grandmother’s closet: blue dress (muu muu?), big red purse, shades and a bad wig. One robber led an employee and the manager on duty from register to register, from which he gathered cash, then he ordered the manager and another employee to stay put in an office, and fled. Meanwhile, other employees had called Kirkwood’s finest, who were patrolling the area anyway. The cops made short work of rounding up the knuckleheads after spying the getaway car and stopping it during a short eastbound chase on Manchester Road to Berry. Two of the three were charged. We hope Grandma doesn’t get her duds back after they’re entered into evidence. She could use a new wardrobe. What goes around, comes around. O’Fallon is considering allowing domesticated birds on residential property. Presently, chickens, ducks and geese are permitted only on agricultural land in the city. We surmise that the residential property in question has been zoned as such for less than 50 years. Same probably goes for commercial concerns such as supermarkets, C-stores and fast-food restaurants. So goes progress. Whatevs. Much of O’Fallon today is a town of big houses, some on big pieces of property. Some consists of big houses on smaller tracts. Other municipalities comprised of smaller residences with properties only fractions of an acre have passed ordinances allowing egglaying hens, including Richmond Heights. Communities that are more spread out, like Creve Coeur, also have given wings up to chickens. (‘So, hey, O’Fallon neighbor—you may think my chickens are annoying, but I’m not fond of your barking dogs and I’m allergic to your cats.’) At any rate, my neighbors in south St. Louis have chickens. I hear them every once in awhile. My son and I think they’re amusing. So go, O’Fallon! Let the birds range free … within your fenced yards and wired coops, anyway. Restaurateur and chef Mike Johnson is no shrinking violet. The owner
of Sugarfire Smokehouse in Olivette next month will open a place specializing in his addictive desserts. One has the no-holds-barred name of Crack Pie; just one bite of Sugarfire pastry chef Carolyn Downs’ sugar pie (with caramelized brown sugar) will give diners an idea of why it was named after the notorious street drug. Many people celebrate Johnson’s decor almost as much as his recipes: Sugarfire Smokehouse has a fun and funky feel. Sugarfire Pie, to open two doors down in the shopping plaza, at 9200 Olive Blvd., will celebrate the ambience of a bakery from the 1950s. You won’t be able to buy a slice of pie for a nickel, of course, but you should still get your money’s worth from the pies and other desserts cooked up by Downs (also of Cyrano’s fame), not to mention the soft-serve frozen custard the restaurant will offer. We’re sure you’ve seen announcements for the ‘first annual’ this or that event, which (alas) never makes a second appearance. Technically, something can’t be called ‘annual’ unless it’s the third time it has reoccurred (in a row), and the Dogtown Street Musicians Festival has hit the magical mark of five straight years. The fifth annual festival is slated for Saturday, Sept. 20, at the corner of Clayton and Tamm avenues in the popular Dogtown neighborhood. Although this neighborhood is known for its raucous St. Patrick’s Day parades, this event is designed to encourage the crowd to get up-close and listen to upward of 30 all-acoustic acts that set up on the sidewalks. Dogtown Historical Society is behind the happening, and all tips go to the respective performers, which have ranged from combos to solo hammereddulcimer players. Musicians will perform from noon to 7 p.m., and admission is free. Some folks can never get ready too early for the holidays. They’re hard-core, buying gifts on sale this year to put under the tree next year, and saving all the boxes from years past to reuse. And some start baking way before the frost is on the pumpkin. (We’re not talking about fruitcake. People may have been regifting the same one their great-grandmother concocted during the Eisenhower era.) So, we wanted to let you know plenty early about a holiday event put on by our area’s Greek Orthodox community. Ladies and gentlemen, start your salivary glands: St. Nicholas Family Life Center in Town & Country will prepare favorite Greek delicacies both for the true aficionado and the simply curious on Saturday, Nov. 8, to enjoy or take home to put in the freezer for the holidays. We’re talking about baklava,

It’s been called the ‘electric beach,’ but now tanning beds for teens in Webster Groves, and everywhere else in the state, are off-limits unless the youth have parental permission. (In this context, ‘teens’ are younger than 17.) Experts say minors comprise more than half of the people who use tanning beds, and they hope the new law will have a chilling effect on teenagers and the salons that would tan them. What price for turning a teen’s skin golden-brown? Salons would be subject to a $100 fine for the first offense, and $500 for subsequent violations. The law puts the onus on parents, as well. They’d have to sign a one-year release to the salon for their kids to tan. What’s the big deal? The big ‘C,’ of course. Studies have shown that early exposure to UV rays increases the risk of cancer later in life.

FRIENDS OF] WINGS

BUTTERFLIES SIGNIFY HOPE AND RENEWAL. That’s why they’re the perfect symbol for Wings, BJC’s pediatric hospice and palliative care program for children and youth with life-limiting illnesses. “Wings focuses on the clinical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the entire family, regardless of their ability to pay, as well as on the needs of the community,” explains Joan Thompson of Friends of Wings, a group that raises funds for Wings. “Our bereavement specialists are there every step of the way, up to two years after a child’s death. It’s the only program of its kind in the region.” In addition to comprehensive hospice and respite services, Wings provides programs that help people deal with their emotions following the death of a beloved child, sibling or classmate. Services include camps for kids; retreats for parents; expressive therapy programs that incorporate the arts; Joyful Celebrations, which helps patients recognize birthdays and other special occasions with family and friends; and Wings on Wheels, a mobile expressive therapy unit for kids, families and communities touched by illness and loss. “Wings helps people express their grief in a healthy way, by honoring their loved ones and celebrating their lives,” Thompson says. There is no charge for these services, and programs aren’t limited to BJC patients, Thompson adds. “Friends of Wings has raised more than $5 million since 2001, and we also rely on corporate and individual donors,” she notes. The Social Butterfly Bash, a fundraiser presented by Friends of Wings in partnership with Evntiv, Neiman Marcus and Koman Properties, takes place Oct. 18 at St. Louis City Hall. Nicole DiMartini and Stephanie Schnuck, who chaired last year’s Bash, will be honored that evening for their fundraising efforts. “Our theme is ‘party like a celebrity,’ and we’re going all-out to make each and every Wings supporter feel like a star,” Thompson says. All guests will enjoy dancing, cocktails, specialties prepared by top local chefs, and the opportunity to bid on ‘celebrity experience’ packages featuring luxury items or services and an autographed Social Butterfly sculpture. “Each unique, 7-inch-high butterfly sculpture is autographed by a celebrity, including Katy Perry, Stephen Colbert, Jimmie Kimmel, Nelly, Darius Rucker, and former Rams player Isaac Bruce,” Thompson explains. Celebrity impersonators from Las Vegas will pay tribute to Cher, Tina Turner and other icons. A lip reader, body artist and fashion sketch artist will be on hand to amuse partygoers. Guests at a higher ticket level will have unlimited access to VIP lounges. The Diva Bubble Lounge for women features makeup artists, hair stylists, champagne and other treats. The Whiskey Lounge is a deluxe man cave with hearty drinks, hand-rolled cigars and a gaming table. Guests at the highest ticket level also are eligible to win a luxurious indulgence from Neiman Marcus. “Wings helps so many families,” Thompson says. “The Social Butterfly Bash gives our supporters a chance to channel their inner celebrity. It’s a fun-filled night they’ll never forget.”

CONVERSATION
JOHNNIE-O’S
WITH
JOHN O’DONNELL BY STEPHANIE ZEILENGA
John O’Donnell, founder of the popular clothing line johnnie-O, was born in St. Louis, and raised in Chicago. After moving to the West Coast to attend college at UCLA, he was inspired to combine the preppy style from his youth with the laid-back, surfer aesthetic of California. That was 2005. Today, johnnie-O, which can be found locally at Crescent Coast, Mister Guy Men’s and Women’s, Fun in the Sun and Dandelions, is a favorite among both celebrities and athletes, including Adrian Grenier of Entourage and athletes Pete Sampras and Drew Brees. O’Donnell will be in St. Louis Sept. 19 for a party in his honor at Crescent Coast.

COVER STORY
T&S: How deep are your St. Louis roots?
JO: My grandparents are from St. Louis and my parents were born and raised in St. Louis, so I’ve got a rich history of ancestors from the city. There are seven kids in my family [including actor Chris O’Donnell], and the first five were born in St. Louis—I was the last—before we moved to Chicago. We’d return to St. Louis every Thanksgiving to visit relatives, and I still get back to this day.
T&S: What do you attribute to the brand’s success?
JO: There is an appetite for a brand like johnnie-O that marries East Coast/Midwest with southern California surf culture. I have had a lot of support from family and friends. I introduced it to the right people and right consumers, and I got the brand into strategic shops.
T&S: The brand describes its aesthetic as West Coast prep. Why does this appeal to consumers?
JO: The preppier guys can stay in their comfort zone because the garments are versions of clothing they’re familiar with. But the way we package it and our logo and hangtag give it a slightly different feeling, so they get that surfer vibe without having to put on a big floral shirt. And for people in the surfing community, it gives them the opportunity to dress it up more than usual. Everyone stays within their comfort level and gets a taste of both worlds.
T&S: Anything new on the horizon for johnnie-O?
JO: We’ve got a lot of new products and product categories coming. Everything from men’s and boys’ pants to a new swim category, sweaters, new colors and new performance hybrid shorts.

CRESCENT] COAST
POOLS ARE CLOSED, SCHOOL’S BACK IN SESSION and the nights are growing cooler. But that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to the casual coastal style of summer. Local boutique Crescent Coast, which opened in February, is introducing plenty of new items to get fashionable St. Louisans through another Midwest winter. “My main lines, which are Southern Tide, johnnie-O, Calypso St. Barth and Velvet, all carry pieces that change with the seasons,” says store owner Terry Warner. The store’s cold-season offerings include pants for men, women and children from Joe’s Jeans and DL1961; dress shirts and blazers from Stone Rose, which uses Italian fabrics; and a line of cashmere sweaters from Calypso St. Barth. “We’ll also be carrying fabulous faux and real fur vests, beautiful cashmere dusters and cardigans, soft sweaters, flowy blouses, leggings paired with comfortable dresses, and Lucky boots and booties,” Warner says. Although sweaters, dresses and vests might not immediately evoke thoughts of the beach, Warner is quick to point out that there are plenty of oceanfront locales with varying climates. Many of the store’s brands hail from California, and some resort lines, such as Calypso St. Barth, offer seasonal clothing. “The colors, fabric weights and styles change with the seasons,” Warner says. “And a coastal/beachy vibe is more a frame of mind: casual and comfortable.” Coats, predicted to be a hot item this year, will be available soon at the boutique. Shoppers can expect a big announcement from Crescent Coast in February 2015, Warner says. “We’ll be adding a popular and established outerwear and apparel brand that will include lightweight, insulated jackets and beautiful raincoats,” she notes. For St. Louisans jetting off to warmer climates in the winter months, Crescent Coast will remain a shopping destination; it offers new lines of swimwear from Nanette Lepore, Gypsy and Strong Bolt. “I plan to keep a section of the boutique dedicated to men’s and women’s resort wear,” Warner says. At less than a year old, Crescent Coast already has earned a loyal following, even winning St. Louis Magazine’s A-List Award for resort wear, Warner says. “If you’re truly passionate about what you do or offer, that enthusiasm becomes contagious,” she says. The boutique will host a party Sept. 19 in honor of johnnie-O, one of the store’s main brands, which was founded by native St. Louisan John O’Donnell. “Johnnie-O was the first brand to commit to the boutique, so the event is a thank you party to celebrate opening our doors,” Warner says. O’Donnell will be there to personally meet fans of the brand, and of Crescent Coast. “They invited us to come out for the party, and their customers appear to be a good match for johnnie-O,” O’Donnell says. “It sounds like our kind of people are hanging out at Crescent Coast!” PICTURED: TERRY WARNER, HER SONS COLE AND CHASE, AND HUSBAND PAUL. [WEST COUNTY CENTER COVER STORY
CBL & ASSOCIATES PROPERTIES by karyn meyer
OVER THE YEARS, WEST COUNTY CENTER has continually added the kinds
of stores its upscale shoppers are looking for. West Countians know style, says Justine Robinson, the center’s marketing specialist, and that has resulted in ever more popular and stylish storefronts. Parent company CBL & Associates Properties is focused closely on reading its clientele and delivering the kinds of stores people are looking for, Robinson says. Recent additions at the mall illustrate that point, she says. Like the ever-popular and ageless Banana Republic, which sees customers from their teens all the way up to trendy seniors, and Gap and Gap Kids. “We always try to stay with the pulse of the shopper,” Robinson says. “We want to make sure the retailers in our center are the ones who provide the most fashionable merchandise and runway trends.” That is accomplished, in part, by closely monitoring sales and evaluating tenants, she reports. Consumer feedback, which is welcome and even solicited, is very important, Robinson says, which is why customers can share their thoughts at the service center, on Facebook and Twitter. Another new retailer, Altar’d State, just opened this month, placing its second St. Louis location in West County Center. The shop specializes in comfortable, ontrend clothing and accessories while promoting civic involvement and charitable causes. And there are exciting changes at some of the center’s most popular stores. Nordstrom is undergoing a big remodel of its second level and will celebrate its completion in October with the launch of TopShop, a line favored by celebrities and fashionistas alike. The highly popular British line offers trendy clothing at popular prices and is exclusive in St. Louis to Nordstrom. Also on trend is The Limited’s new Scandal line, the launch of which will correlate with the season premiere of the hit TV series. “The show’s main character, Olivia Pope, defines herself as a gladiator,” Robinson says. “This line was designed to encourage women to pursue their passions and look good while doing it.” Francesca’s, the boutique-y accessories and clothing shop, recently established an exclusive relationship with Project Runway: Under the Gunn designer Oscar GarciaLopez. “His line, which features dresses and accessories, is exactly the type of product
that defines our customer,” Robinson says. “The store gets new items from the line in periodically, and they sell out almost immediately.” CBL & Associates Properties prides itself on some of the retailers it has attracted exclusively to West County Center, including The North Face, James Avery and XXI. It is also proud to promote several locally owned businesses, Robinson says, like Geranium and the popular children’s salon and spa, Sweet & Sassy. “Shopping ‘small’ is a great concept, and we love helping small businesses that make our community thrive,” Robinson says. “Geranium carries very trendy brands, like Kate Spade, and has a tremendous line of locally designed jewelry at incredible prices.” But most of all, CBL & Associates Properties makes an effort to extend its reach in the community beyond business. Robinson notes that in the center’s lively restaurant/entertainment area, J. Gilbert’s just announced a new partnership with Saint Louis Crisis Nursery. Every Wednesday until wintertime, the restaurant will offer complimentary wine tastings from 5 to 7 p.m., with a portion of the night’s proceeds to benefit the nonprofit. “All the restaurants are great community partners,” she says. J. Gilbert’s, Bravo and McCormick & Schmick’s recently hosted a celebrity waiter event that raised more than $87,000 for Crisis Nursery. “Giving back to the community is big for our shoppers,” Robinson notes, “and we hope to continue to do events like that for local charities.” Occupancy is nearly full, but Robinson says they have plans to target a couple of new retailers in 2015 and focus on expanding product lines. “Our consumers are looking for the latest and greatest,” she says. “We will continue to strive to meet their standards. We know they have high expectations, and we want to exceed those, providing the ultimate shopping experience in St. Louis.”

APPEALING IN EVERY WAY, Ernesto’s in Benton Park is celebrating its fifth anniversary this fall. The ultra-urban spot is attractive, with boxed-wood paneling on a couple of walls and deep goldenrod paint on others. Photos of the restaurant’s namesake, Ernest Hemingway, are everywhere, and with about a dozen tables, the ambience is warm and cozy. The menu is small and changes periodically. Its focus is mostly on simple comfort foods: Steak Frites, Grilled Cheese, Pulled Pork, Pork Loin and a host of flatbreads. The sides are inventive and add a lot to the dishes. A starter of Tips & Chips ($15 for two) is a good example. Clearly a way to utilize the small tips of the tenderloin offered on the entree menu, the tasty morsels were pan-sauteed and served with a little bourbon mornay sauce and a handful of delicious, thick-cut homemade potato chips. You just scoop up the rich meat and
sauce with a chip, and savor the combination of fat and crunchy, cheesy and salty. A Waldorf chopped kale salad came with thin slices of apple and candied pecans instead of the traditional walnuts. It was well-dressed with a lightly creamy dressing and was all-around satisfying. Celery, a traditional part of this legendary salad, was present, but in long sticks way too unwieldy to eat with a fork. The Petite Bistro Steak ($23) was heavenly: a 6-ounce fillet beautifully crisped on the outside (the key to this cut) and red on the inside. Without that outer sear, fillet can taste mealy, almost like liver. The accompanying browned potatoes were memorable, oilcrisped and well-seasoned. There’s a nice flatbread menu, by which I mean nice toppings. They’re inventive, like our ‘Middle Eastern,’ which had harissa, roasted cauliflower, feta and golden

raisins. The flavors were grand, the crust not so much since it was on naan, the soft, pita-like dough that might be a great shortcut, but doesn’t compare to a well-oiled, crisp pizza crust. Well-conceived all around was the Herb Roasted Chicken Breast ($18), an entrée with a stellar side of white beans with kale and house-made sausage. An herb-covered breast was sliced on top of creamy beans well-flavored with both cayenne pepper and a German-style sausage. It would have been perfect, if the chicken had not been over-cooked and too dry. Desserts didn’t quite live up to the savories. Tasting only like a blend of whipped cream and mashed bananas, the Banana Pudding was too thin to be considered a true pudding. A cobber of mixed dark berries was tasty—not too sweet—and came covered simply with a bit of pie crust—nothing special.

SAD TO SAY, but sooner rather than later we will be trading in our baseball gloves and bats for pads and footballs as summer turns to fall. Invariably our tastes will shift from vodka and gin to bourbon and scotch. As the seasons change, so do the drink menus, and fall is my favorite time of year to mix.

Presenting Sponsor of the 2014-15 Jazz at the Bistro Season
>> I have been asked plenty of times in the past if the seasons play
a part in what we drink. Sales show that the general public tends to lean toward brown spirits during autumn and winter, enjoying a heartier approach to imbibing. So what makes a good autumn cocktail? To answer that question, think back to grade school and awakening on a Saturday morning to the smells of apple pie, cinnamon, nutmeg and roasting butternut squash in the kitchen. Now that you’re an adult, think about how great all those things would smell in a drink...and there’s the added benefit of alcohol!
>>
One of my favorite autumn drinks is the Sidecar: cognac, lemon juice and simple syrup. Due to the oak aging it has a lot of spices (cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, etc.) we think about in the fall, bolstered by fresh lemon and rounded out with a touch of sweetness. This drink can be made with a variety of spirits, but I would stick to anything barrel-aged. Try a Sidecar with bourbon, Armagnac or even a great aged rum. One thing is for certain when preparing autumn drinks: Always remember that depth of hearty flavor is key. If citrus reigns supreme in the summer, nuanced and deep flavors are king come September and October. Happy drinking, all! Seymour Hoffman’s final film. I didn’t realize until the credits that it’s a John le Carré story—which totally makes sense, considering the tense plot line and its various twists. Taking place in Hamburg, the action is set into motion when Muslim Chechan Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin) sneaks into Germany illegally. Through his Muslim contacts there, he is referred to human rights lawyer Annabel Richter (Rachel McAdams), who proceeds to help him gain access to funds secreted away into a Hamburg bank by Issa’s father, a notorious Russian thug. The question is: Is Issa a

THINKING OF TWEAKING THE FACE OR BODY THIS YEAR? Fall and winter are the perfect times for cosmetic procedures— and the hibernation that often follows. If you plan it just right, you would have been indoors anyway, and nestled into layers of clothing. Think how much easier it would be to hide scars and bandages. Then in spring, like a chrysalis emerging, you’ll be ready for the sleeveless, carefree days of spring. A whopping 15.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2013 (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), with rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and breast surgeries leading the pack.

YOUR PERFECT BREASTS
ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLASTIC SURGEONS, breast augmentation is the No. 1 most requested cosmetic surgery. In the United States, more than 290,000 women had breast augmentation in 2013. Maybe more surprising is who’s doing it: the number of women over the age of 50 and younger than 22 undergoing first-time augmentation is growing.
It’s Not Only About Bigger
Breast reductions and lifts also remain popular choices, though Dr. Judith Gurley, director of Dr. Judith Gurley Plastic Surgery & Spa, estimates that for every one breast reduction she performs, she will perform two or three augmentations. Dr. Michele Koo, a plastic surgeon with Aesthetic & Hand Surgery, explains the popularity of both procedures as the desire to enhance the balance of the body and improve self-image. “I completely disagree with the notion of ‘vanity,’” she says. “ If you have a dent in your car, would you fix it if you could? Of course you would, because you care about how you present yourself. How one looks often affects how confident and comfortable one is and how willing one is to work, interact and engage more fully in daily life.” Gurley adds that breast surgery is often sought to correct abnormalities, asymmetries, imbalances and physical deformities that patients are self conscious about. “We shouldn’t judge whether someone is reducing their breasts because she is tired of men staring at her or because they are heavy and painful. Or enlarging breasts because her AA breasts prevent her from feeling confident,” Gurley says. In some cases, breast reductions may be covered by insurance companies. The procedure is “medically advisable when one has rashes under the breasts and the breasts cause pain in the shoulders and back and prevent one from engaging in physical activities for a healthier lifestyle,” Koo points out. “A breast reduction can be a life-changing event that allows a woman to become more active and go on to exercise and become healthier.”

S
leep apnea affects almost every family in America. Most people with this condition are instructed to use a mask and hose (CPAP therapy) to force air down the nose and throat. The majority of people told to use a CPAP do not like it and about half stop using the device within a week. Most people are not aware that there is another answer! Oral appliance therapy is a very successful treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. It is a comfortable and discreet way to achieve rejuvenating sleep, gain energy during the day and travel comfortably. Today’s oral appliances are over 90% successful and have been recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 2006.

“Dr. Smith and her staff are very pleasant. I’m glad I found out about their office and the sleep appliance online. I used a CPAP for eight years and found that it was hard for me to use because it would keep me awake at night. Now I use an oral sleep appliance and I sleep so much better. I enjoy being able to sleep in any position and I feel free because I no longer have to be connected to a machine. The appliance is worth the cost for the improvement in the quality of my life.”
“My life has improved since Dr. Smith made me an oral appliance because now I can breathe at night and I get a better night’s sleep. I used to use a CPAP but I felt claustrophobic and I couldn’t sleep with that machine. My oral appliance is completely different. It’s easy to travel with, easy to take care of and it doesn’t make any noise! Everyone at Dentistry With TLC is very pleasant and friendly. I’m very satisfied with my experience here.”

HOW SAFE ARE THESE PROCEDURES?
HOW LONG WILL IMPLANTS LAST?
Breast implants should last approximately 10 to 20 years, Koo says. “The life of saline implants tends to be slightly shorter, and the presence of palpable ‘ripples’ also is more common with these after about five to 10 years compared with silicone.”
Major advancements in surgical centers have maximized patient safety, comfort and recovery. “And new techniques are less invasive, allowing for quicker healing time and less scarring, all without compromising desired results,” Gurley says.
3
4
WHAT IS THE RIGHT BREAST SIZE?
WHAT IS A BREAST LIFT?
Gurley recommends women choose a cup size that lies within the average range. “Outside of that norm, too small or too large, can be disfiguring and uncomfortable,” she says.
Koo explains this procedure as the removal of excess skin and repositioning of the nipple areolar complex to the middle of the breast mound. A breast lift is always part of breast reduction, and may be needed with breast augmentation.
8 QUESTIONS FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING BREAST SURGERY
5
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING RECOVERY?
6
Most patients experience minimal discomfort and only a few days of downtime. They typically can return to light exercise within two weeks, and will be fully recovered in 4 to 6 weeks. Both procedures are usually under $10,000, Gurley says.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH MY IMPLANT?
There will be hardening (capsular contractures) and distortion in the shape and feel of the breasts if there is leaking or frank rupture of an implant, Koo explains.
Ask the Expert
7
SHOULD IMPLANTS BE REMOVED OR REPLACED AFTER 10 YEARS?
If you are happy with your implants and there is no sign of a rupture, no. However, some women choose to remove or replace if the breasts have increased in size or started to descend. The surgeon typically also will remove any hard scar tissue that might be causing the breast to feel unnatural, Koo says, and may also perform a lift at the same time.
8
HOW SHOULD I CHOOSE A SURGEON?
Do your homework. “Find a surgeon you trust, view lots of before and after photos of your surgeon’s previous work, and talk to former patients,” Koo recommends. “And make sure the surgeon shares your opinion of what your perfect breasts should look like.”
Question: What is pelvic organ prolapse and how do I know if I have it?
Answer: Pelvic organ prolapse is the downward descent of the female pelvic organs, resulting in protrusion, or bulging, of the vagina, uterus, or both, into or through the opening of the vagina. Women may be able to actually see or feel a bulge or may experience pressure or heaviness in the pelvic area. While women are often told their bladder and/or rectum is “falling out,” the tissue they see or feel is actually the vagina and/ or uterus. We call prolapse of the front wall of the vagina (which holds up the bladder) anterior vaginal wall prolapse, and prolapse of the back wall of the vagina (which supports the rectum) posterior vaginal wall prolapse. Prolapse of the top of the vagina is called uterine prolapse (if the uterus is still present) or post-hysterectomy apical vaginal prolapse (if a woman has had a hysterectomy).

Women can have varying symptoms, most often related to the part of their vagina that is prolapsing. Anterior vaginal wall prolapse is often associated with bladder symptoms such as urinary frequency, urinary incontinence and difficulty voiding. Posterior vaginal wall prolapse often leads to bowel symptoms, such difficulty passing bowel movements or accidental loss of stool or gas. There can also be a combination of bladder and bowel symptoms, pressure and heaviness and sexual dysfunction related to prolapse. Women often wonder what caused their prolapse. It is usually due to multiple factors and not any one particular reason or event. Pregnancy, vaginal childbirth, advancing age and obesity are some of the most common risk factors for prolapse. A simple clinical exam can determine the presence and extent of prolapse. A board-certified female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery specialist can help you determine an individualized treatment plan depending on the stage of prolapse, how much it bothers you and if the prolapse is affecting the function of other pelvic organs. | f 14 SEPTEMBER 10, 2014 | townandstyle.com

Dr. Steven Couch, a Washington University oculofacial plastic and reconstructive specialist, explains that upper eyelid blepharoplasty treats excess skin, fullness and heaviness in the upper eyelids. Additionally, surgeons can perform conservative skin and fat removal to get a safe and natural appearance. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can address lower eyelid bags, puffiness and dark circles. Many patients choose to have both upper and lower procedures done simultaneously to achieve the best overall look. But these might not address some of the attendant issues of aging. Dr. John Holds, a surgeon at Ophthalmic Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Inc., notes that on its own, blepharoplasty typically cannot reverse the dynamic smile lines caused by loss of muscle tone or the secondary bags that extend into the cheek area. Laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels can treat eyelid wrinkles. Couch says blepharoplasty patients should expect “a tailored surgical plan with any combination of cheek lifting, skin resurfacing with lasers or chemicals, dermal fillers, facial fat transfer and cosmeceuticals.” Some patients even can avoid lower eyelid surgery altogether with dermal fillers, adds Holds. And, the physicians note that eyelids will continue to age naturally, along with the patient, from the date of surgery.
costs The total cost of eyelid surgery is dependent on the exact procedures being performed and the location of the procedure (office procedure room versus operating room), but can range from $2,500 to $8,000, Couch says. If severe drooping of the upper eyelid skin overhangs the pupil, as can be the case with older patients, that could constitute a ‘functional’ blepharoplasty, Holds explains. The removal of that skin to improve vision would likely be covered by insurance, although any attendant fat contouring or adjustments might not be.

The Shape of Things to Come why so popular? “Upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty remains the gold standard for cosmetic and functional periocular rejuvenation, thus they continue to be extremely popular surgeries,” says Couch. Its popularity is a no-brainer, in a costs/benefits assessment, adds Holds.

Do You Need a Brow Lift, Too?
As with any plastic surgery, the best outcomes start with choosing the right surgeon. Couch and Holds recommend looking for a surgeon who specializes in this procedure, has a number of treatment options to offer and has like-minded cosmetic goals. Ask to see before and after pictures from previous patients.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Changes in the collagen and elastin of our skin, along with loss and redistribution of facial fat, affect more than just your eyes, says Holds. Often when patients request an upper eyelid lift, it would be better instead to do a brow lift or a combination of the procedures. Doing them together allows surgeons to raise and smooth the forehead and brows, reduce overhanging skin, reduce upper and lower eyelid puffiness, and make everything look balanced and normal.

According to WebMD, rhinoplasty is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure among teens. Dr. L. Mike Nayak, director of Nayak Plastic Surgery, says teens can consider elective rhinoplasty when they are physically and emotionally mature—generally around age 14 for girls and 16 for boys. Dr. William Hart, director of Hart Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery Institute, reports that about 75 percent of his rhinoplasty patients are women, and while most are young or middle aged, he also has done the procedure on patients in their 70s. Rhinoplasty can be used to remove a bump in the nose, straighten the bridge, reshape the tip or open breathing passages. These days, surgeons remove less cartilage and bone and even use small cartilage grafts and sutures to support the tip and middle, according to Hart. That explains why rhinoplasties from 30 years ago (when they did not take these measures) don’t look as good today. Patient preferences also have evolved. “I believe a natural, softer look is more desirable now than it was in the past,” Hart says. “The scoopedout ‘Debbie Reynolds’ look is not as popular as it once was. Patients are more attuned in most cases to a contour that fits their face and, perhaps, in some cases, retains more of their ethnic character.”
Just as importantly, Iron Tribe taught me that fitness is also what I eat. Their Paleo diet has changed my life. I feel better and I have energy. You eat Paleo for a week or two and – trust me – you’ll feel amazing. So now the weight comes off for good. And, because of Iron Tribe, I’ve gained a ton of new friends, energy, confidence, and a whole new outlook to keep me going. So try Iron Tribe. You’ll have weight to lose, and everything else to gain.
WHILE THE NOSE STICKS OUT, it shouldn’t stand out. The face needs to be a harmonious blend of features, with no single aspect dominating. Thanks to social media and selfies, though, more people than ever are scrutinizing their noses—and they don’t always like what they see. This has caused an uptick in rhinoplasty, the already popular ‘nose job.’
w
EVER-EVOLVING
According to Nayak, patients are generally happy with rhinoplasty, but the result can change—for better or worse —over time. “If the result changes over time and the patient becomes less pleased, revision may be considered. But sometimes, the opposite happens: As swelling settles, they like it more,” he says. But this ‘touch-up rate’ is not significant, 5 to 8 percent, according to Hart. “And most of them can be done under a local anesthetic in the office. Most rhinoplasty surgeons do not charge for these, either.” Nayak points out, though, that rhinoplasty is an unforgiving operation: A good result can last forever, and so can a bad one. “It is worth seeking out a true expert in the field,” he says, “and paying a little more for expertise, judgment and experience. Your first shot is your best.” Pricing varies, but generally ranges between $3,000 and $6,500, Hart says. And many surgeons now can offer 2D or 3D simulations of what the new nose will look like, though both doctors caution that these are estimates, not guarantees. Always ask to see before and after pictures of previous patients.
SHORT & SWEET
Injectables are now being used as an alternative to surgery, reports Nayak. These can’t remove tissue from the nose, but in the right hands, they can alter the proportion and disharmony of the nose and create the illusion of a smaller one. And they can revise a previous rhinoplasty. Injectables are considerably less expensive ($600 to $1,800), and the results last for years, Nayak says. And unlike rhinoplasty, injectables can be reversed if the patient is unhappy. “As with all rhinoplasty, the quality of the result lies in the skill of the person performing it. Judgment and artistry are key,” he says.

by dr. tim jordan ADULTS, GET A GRIP! A high school pitcher in Rochester, Wa., recently threw 194 pitches over 14 innings in his district tournament game, and the best excuse his coach came up with was that he didn’t think the kid was tired. Dr. James Andrews, who performs the infamous Tommy John elbow operation for major league pitchers, says many of the problems with the big leaguers can be traced to injuries from youth baseball. He and other experts recommend that young pitchers take several months off each year from throwing, and instead develop other muscles by playing a variety of sports. Fat chance of that happening in this age of ultra-competitive select sports. The mantra for young athletes today is work hard, play more, get more exposure to college and professional scouts and coaches, and get recognized. Big-time recruiters who used to show up only at high school games now are seen at grade school showcase tourneys. There is a lot of time, money and energy invested in children’s athletic careers, which makes it hard for them to take time off because they are so afraid of disappointing their parents, coaches and teammates. And it encourages them to work and play through pain when they should be resting and rehabbing. When kids play unsupervised, unstructured sports, overuse injuries are rarely seen. It’s only when adults step in that the focus changes from playing for the love of the game to a win-at-all-costs mentality, with college scholarships and the pros becoming the Holy Grail. Many kids quit playing sports by middle school because it is no longer fun. I fully understand the potential value of sports: learning new skills; learning the value of hard work and persistence; learning how to be a good winner and loser; teamwork; and having fun with friends and making new ones. But I think you can learn those lessons playing 15 games a season, not the 60 to 80 baseball games traveling teams play each summer. I’d rather kids have plenty of time to go on family vacations, go to non-sports-related summer camps and have some free time to follow their own interests. It infuriates me when girls can’t come to my summer camp because their soccer or cheerleading coach won’t let them miss practice that week. Parents have to beg to get their kids a few days off to go on vacation with their families. Parents, take charge! Make participation in sports, or any activity, first and foremost about having fun. Take charge of your time: only one sport and team a season. Have your child take months off for any sport they engage in, and encourage your budding athletes to try non-sports activities like art or theater. Help them become well-rounded and balanced in their lives. Ensure that most nights you can sit down to dinner as a family and can have unsupervised, unstructured play. Don’t allow your family to get caught up in the frantic, competitive rat race that youth sports have become. Let balance, moderation and common sense prevail.

HEALTH&BEAUTY
THE STEPS EXFOLIATING by marylyn simpson
STEP 1: SO FRESH, SO CLEAN
Just like exfoliating your face, you’ll want to thoroughly wash your body before exfoliating. Use your usual body wash. Remember, bar soap can dry out skin so be sure to use a wash that leaves skin extra hydrated, since exfoliation also dries skin.
LUXURIES DON’T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE. In fact, it’s pretty easy to create your own pampered experience. A simple ritual like exfoliation can offer a quick escape from everyday stressors. During a recent visit to L.A.’s BeautyCon, I discovered BonBliss, a company that focuses on scented, all-natural, mini exfoliates in candy-inspired packaging. Never one to turn away from a truffled treat, I indulged—and saw that simple things like exfoliation and bubble baths offer an easy way to bring a little luxury into your life.
STEP 2: C’EST BON!
Once you’ve washed, unwrap BONBLISS’S MOISTURIZING BODY TRUFFLE and gently exfoliate from the neck down. You can use your hands or a body scrubber, whatever you normally use. Break the Body Truffle into pieces or use all at once; these aromatic tiny treasures can go a long way.
STEP 3: SILKY SMOOTH
Now that you’ve washed, exfoliated and rinsed, step out of the shower and pat your silky smooth skin with a dry towel. Because of BonBliss’ moisturizing properties, you won’t need to apply lotion once you’ve dried off. Your skin will not only be left feeling smooth but smelling absolutely fabulous.
PRO TIP>>
If you’re on the go and don’t have time to exfoliate, check out BONBLISS’S SCRUB-2-GO mini exfoliating cubes. Packaged like little sugar cube candies, they break apart and can be used after hand washing. They’ll leave your hands moisturized and smelling great, a wonderful on-the-go alternative to hand lotion.

[THE 100 MILES CHALLENGE by patty hannum
I KNOW WHAT I LIKE, and what I don’t. I don’t like being in nature; I like to look at it from the safety of my home. I don’t like to sweat, even though I make myself exercise three times a week. I do like a good joke, a stiff drink and dogs, all kinds of dogs—big, little, fluffy and scruffy—well, except for energetic dogs. I like my dogs lazy. My golden retriever, Riley, likes to swim, but only if she is being pushed on a raft. That’s my kind of dog. So I am not sure what came over my family when we decided to adopt a Siberian Husky mutt. After careful consideration, which consisted of looking at pictures on the Dent County Animal Welfare Society website (www.dcaws. org), we promptly chose Stella. Normally I fully research each and every decision. If I had, I would have learned Stella’s breed, is “energetic, active sporty, restless and destructive.” Also “a cold weather dweller” and “a bit willfull.” Stella was not going to lie around anywhere, much less on a raft in the pool. But once I commit, I commit for life. There is no going back or return to sender. You can ask my husband of 31 years or my friends from high school who have been trying to dodge me for the past 35 years. So even though I knew Stella may not be a perfect match for the Hannum family, we would find a way to make it work. I decided Stella and I would embark on the 100 Missouri Miles Challenge (www.100missourimiles.com), issued by Gov. Jay Nixon, as a way to bond and release some of her puppy energy while slowly helping me overcome my dislike of nature. Plus, at the end, I would receive a car decal from the state of Missouri announcing my 100-mile accomplishment. Never heard of the 100 Miles Challenge? Missouri is the ‘Best Trail State,’ according to American Trails. We have more than 1,000 miles of managed trails, including the Katy, which at 240 miles is the longest rails-totrails project in the nation. Gov. Nixon has challenged Missourians to walk, bike, float, kayak or run 100 miles by Dec. 31 as a way to promote the “health and benefits of outdoor physical activity.” Summer in St. Louis is not the perfect time to train a long-haired puppy to walk on a leash with an owner who hates to sweat. Or to run into anything that does not go inside to sleep. I firmly believe you should never make eye contact with a bird for fear you could end up just like Tippi Hedren in The Birds. Puppies like to put everything in their mouths. This includes dead birds and squirrels, trash, half-eaten food, and rocks. All of which must be removed from their mouths. Every walk ended with me sweaty and gross, and extracting

something from Stella’s mouth while screaming that I was contracting West Nile virus. It could so happen. Anyway, I’d like to be able to tell you that Stella and I bonded, that our walks together wore her out and made her the dog that comes when I call her, lies by my side when I sit down, and stares at me lovingly. But I would be lying. Stella is Stella: a high-energy, garbage-eating canine who has wiggled her way into the hearts of our family. Oh, and Stella and I did not make it to 100 miles. We hit our limit at 76. But I did learn that Missouri trails are beautiful and not too scary. I also learned that three-fourths of the way is better than nothing. So even though we failed the governor’s challenge, I am really hoping that somehow I can still get the decal for my car.

T&S HOME 2433 TOWN AND COUNTRY LANE ] by karyn meyer listing price | $1,675,000 listing agent | melinda johnson of gladys manion real estate MICHAEL AND VICKI LIESMANN SPENT NEARLY 30 YEARS in the Sunset Hills area before Michael accepted positions in London and New Jersey for his job as a partner with Pricewaterhouse Coopers. When he was approaching retirement, the couple knew it was time to head back home. They found a private house on 1 acre in Town & Country that met their needs perfectly. “We wanted to live in this area to be close to all our friends; we had a lot of connections here,” Michael Liesmann says. As members of Bellerive Country Club, the couple found the location especially convenient. They moved into the one-and-a-half-story house in 2009, two years after it had been built on a teardown lot, and say the quiet, single-street neighborhood provides both privacy and convenience to all the area has to offer. Liesmann also applauds the easy access to the pedestrian walkway along Clayton Road that runs the length of the city, built after they moved in. “It’s very popular among residents,” he says. Vicki says they often walk the trail, and it’s a great way to get to Straub’s for a cup of coffee. “Our daughter and son-in-law, who live in Des Peres, even use it,” she says. “They just park at our house.” One of the main attractions of the six-bedroom house is its open floor plan. “In our previous homes, my wife never liked being ‘closed off’ from everyone else if she was in the kitchen,” Liesmann says. “This house is totally open, creating a sense of togetherness.” The large kitchen with double islands, two sinks and top-of-theline appliances opens to the hearth room, the couple’s favorite place to relax. “We love its barrel ceiling and stone fireplace,” he says. Vicki adds that it’s a popular space for everyone who visits. “Whenever we entertain, no matter how many people are here, they always stay in the hearth/kitchen area,” she says. “We PHOTOS: TOM CHLEBOWSKI have all this room to spread out, but everyone congregates in the same place.” At more than 7,000 square feet, there is ample space for entertaining, and the Liesmanns took advantage of the first-floor great room and basement for that purpose. “We hosted a lot of large family gatherings, especially around the holidays,” Liesmann says. During his 60th birthday party, the great room made a perfect venue for a group of blues musicians to entertain guests. The couple wanted a main-floor master suite and were impressed with the amenities of this home’s master bath. Liesmann says the high ceilings and travertine tile create an attractive space, but the real bonus is the gas fireplace near the Whirlpool bath. “It was great in the winter to wake up in the morning and just hit the switch,” he says. Liesmann admits they are ready for a smaller place but have no desire to leave Town & Country. “We absolutely love it here,” he says.

BEFORE
DEAR HOMEWORK,
The front of our Georgian home is lacking in style. The white trim around windows and doors doesn’t seem to complement the dark brick, and the front door color seems off as well. We also were thinking a carport would complement the style of the home and protect the cars from tree sap. How can we enhance the view and solve the exposed car issue? ——— GEORGIAN IN NAME ONLY

I guess I would call your house Georgian, too, but only because I couldn’t categorize it as anything else. Your front façade needs more detail and depth to feel more complete and convincing. The existing front stoop is the perfect size for a simple, copper-roofed porch. Stout Doric columns and corner pilasters would complement the existing proportions of the architecture, and a more stone-colored paint would better blend with the brick color. A variegated, slate-colored roof completes the main body of the house. On the garage wing, I suggest turning the existing two-car, front-entry garage
I have no idea if you have room in back for a turn-around, but most neighborhood restrictions would prohibit the placement of a carport in front of the existing garage door. This new arrangement gives the façade a more up-market feel and adds some interesting details. For the landscape, I would first insist on trimming the two front trees so that the elevation is not hidden. Next, I would extend the planting beds to the sides—it makes the façade feel wider and grander. The home now has some ‘oomph’ and justifies the name Georgian. Thanks for asking, ———HOMEWORK

building framed bed gardens >>
FIVE TIPS FOR SUCCESS September is a great month for building framed beds to grow cool-season vegetables like lettuce and broccoli. Framed, or raised, beds are ideal for vegetables because they allow you to control the soil quality, don’t require much digging and make it easy to care for plants. Here are five tips to get you started.
1.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to choose your new home from our prestigious Louis Collection series. These homes feature upscale ranch, 1.5-story and 2-story properties with living space ranging from 2,745 to 3,816 square feet. Select from seven tree-lined homesites with thoughtfullydesigned plans that are feature rich and full of function. building the frames
Size your beds so that you can reach the center easily without stepping into the bed. A soil depth of 10 to 20 inches will grow most garden plants. And there are plenty of choices in material for framing: cement blocks or stones offer longevity; naturally moisture-resistant wood (sustainably harvested cypress or cedar and plain pine boards) is long lasting.
2.
good soil, the secret to success
One of the biggest mistakes people make in the garden is planting in poor soil. Healthy soil equals happy, productive, low-maintenance plants. Fill your bed with a blend of half garden soil, one-quarter well-rotted manure and one-quarter compost or humus.

3.
make watering easy
Vegetable gardens need constant moisture to be productive. This task can quickly become a chore if you don’t set up a system that’s easy to manage. There are many DIY drip irrigation options that are super-simple to install. Add a timer to the faucet, and you take all the work out of watering. Remember to mulch, mulch, mulch to conserve moisture once your soil has sufficiently warmed.
4.
insects and wildlife love vegetables, too
Simple chicken wire covers over hoops can keep bunnies from nibbling on your lettuce and the neighbor’s cat from using it as a litter box. Add an insect row cover to keep insects and moths from laying eggs that hatch into hornworms, cabbage worms and squash bugs.
5.
extend the growing season
Small ‘hoop-houses’ made with concrete reinforcing wire or PVC hoops and covered with a sheet of plastic or a frost blanket will warm beds in early spring, protect plants from late spring frosts, and as the seasons turn toward winter, allow a final late harvest after the first fall frost.
