One of the joys of travel is the education you get from being somewhere different. Well, it doesn’t get much more different than San Francisco, site of my recent travels. And I did learn several things. For one, I learned that dumpster-diving isn’t as gross as I thought it would be. I happened to be in Golden Gate Park at the Conservatory of Flowers right after they trimmed their famous dahlias, and when I noticed another visitor walking away from the dumpster with huge, colorful bouquets, well, instinct kicked in. I also learned that “friends don’t let friends wear Crocs,” as one of my kids abruptly informed me. Apparently there are some things so obviously uncool that even your parents shouldn’t do them. (That list does not, however, include dying your hair any of the primary colors, which, according to her, is totally acceptable, even admirable.) Another eye-opening experience was the price of essentials in the City by the Bay. I noticed a For Sale sign advertising a home with “two spacious bedrooms” selling for $775,000. It did, however, have a big bay window and two “bonus rooms” in the basement, behind the garage. Even more eye-popping was our meal at the landmark restaurant, Greens, which treats fruits and vegetables like they are royalty (and charges accordingly). Even if my Grilled Blossom Bluff Peach with Cowgirl Creamery Fromage Blanc was locally sourced and organic, no peach should cost $12. On the upside, Greens does support the nearby Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in Golden Gate Park, “the first Soto Zen monastery outside Asia.” That explains it. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

“ the proof is in the pudding ”
This strikes us as an especially cryptic phrase. It’s actually a variation of an old saying, The proof of the pudding is in the eating. When we say old, we really mean it: the phrase dates back to at least 1605, possibly earlier. Now, before you start craving the sticky toffee pudding at Schlafly Brew Pub and Bottleworks or the creamy after-school snack so memorably hawked by Bill Cosby, we hasten to inform you that in those days, pudding wasn’t the yummy dessert we know and love, but the stomach or entrails of a barnyard animal stuffed with a mixture of minced meat, suet and oatmeal. When cooked incorrectly, the offal were often awful; if the meat or entrails were spoiled, the dish could be fatal. So it was prudent to test, or proof, the pudding first with a small taste. Through the years, the phrase has come to mean that the effectiveness or truth of something can only be determined by seeing it in action or experiencing it yourself.

FUR & LEATHER [CENTRE by tony di martino She may be only 5 years old, but she’s a born fashionista—
and she has the attitude to prove it. From the tips of her bright pink shoes to her fluffy fur-trimmed vest, she strides down the catwalk with the effortless elan of someone who’s seen every episode of Project Runway. Hard to believe that this grinning, energetic dynamo was once a very sick little girl, undergoing both chemotherapy and radiation for a brain tumor. Though she shares the stage with professional models, she and other young cancer patients and survivors are the real stars of the annual Friends of Kids with Cancer Fashion Show and Boutique. “These children bring the audience to its feet every year,” says Ann Hurth of the Fur & Leather Centre, which provides furs for the event. “They’re shy at first, but by the end of the show you can hardly get them off the runway, even the boys!” The Fur & Leather Centre, located in Frontenac, has supported the fashion show for nearly two decades. “It’s one of our favorite traditions,” Hurth says. “There’s no better way to rev up for the holiday season than by contributing to a great cause and meeting so many inspiring young people.” Friends of Kids with Cancer supports pediatric cancer patients and their families with a wide range of programs, including group recreational activities, scholarships, and art and play therapy for patients and siblings. “We also stock pediatric oncology centers and doctors’ offices with toys, games and other activities to keep kids relaxed and occupied while they’re undergoing treatment,” explains executive director Judy Ciapciak. “We’re there for families during the most stressful, and often painful, time in their lives.” The fashion show, produced by Lucky You Productions, is one of the

organization’s major fundraisers. This year’s 20th anniversary event, themed Life is Sweet, takes place Nov. 8 at The Ritz-Carlton. “We’re spotlighting all the major designers and trends from Milan, Paris and New York, including bold colorblocking, mixed pelts and fanciful trims,” Hurth says. “These are not the dowdy coats your granny used to wear twice a year, but lightweight, versatile pieces you can throw on every day.” The show features furs and accessories at every price point, including highend items from the shop’s in-store designer boutique. “We opened it last year for our fashion-forward customers, and it’s a big hit, even in this economy,” Hurth notes. That’s no surprise to Hurth: “Even the most glamorous fur is a long-lasting, practical investment, and we can completely update and restyle your coat or jacket every few years.” There will be no shortage of glitz and glamour Nov. 8 at The Ritz, but all eyes will be on the youngsters. “Trends in fashion change constantly, but courage never goes out of style,” Hurth says. “These amazing children stop the show every year. Friends of Kids with Cancer does wonderful work, and we’re honored to help any way we can.”

LADUE NEWS - Sept 21 Zobel Non Trunk Show T&S - Oct 3 Zobel Non Trunk Show
talk [towns] by bill beggs jr.
Cory Atkinson and his brother Darain built what looked like the American Dream—a successful business that yielded all the trappings. There were expensive cars and a multimillion-dollar home under construction in Lake St. Louis where there were to be lavish parties, for charity. Turns out they were being anything but charitable. US Fidelis, their national auto warranty company, didn’t deliver promised services or refunds and collapsed a few years ago, leaving innumerable customers— and the feds—holding the bag. Both Atkinsons pleaded guilty to federal and state charges, including mail fraud, insurance fraud and stealing. Chesterfield resident Cory, who was sentenced Sept. 18 to 40 months in prison, also evaded $4 million in taxes. Both brothers have white-collar rap sheets; Darain could face life in prison because of a prior felony conviction for criminal trespass. They’re heeere. Well, sort of. Clayton now allows food trucks to do business in town—during public events. OK; some already have been allowed at the farmers market and Clayton’s premier event, the Saint Louis Art Fair. Various mobile eateries tweeted their wheels off over the summer for the county seat to reconsider its law that otherwise restricts them. In late August, while city officials acknowledged the trucks’ popularity, they loosened up only enough to allow them at block parties, street fairs and other group events. Meanwhile, St. Louis allows them, and Brentwood and other municipalities have taken steps to let various meals-on-wheels purveyors set up shop curbside in select areas. Maplewood has leaned against them, so far. (Our talk about that town herein contains details.)
of the
Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the House, appeared side-by-side with Rep. Todd Akin at the Kirkwood train station for a press conference to announce that new life is coming to Akin’s bid for the U.S. Senate. Gingrich, on-again, off-again frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination last spring, stood with Akin on Sept. 24, the day before the latter could take action to remove his name from the ballot. Gingrich said PAC money would flow to Akin’s campaign, and Republican support would resume once the deadline had passed. That evening at a fundraiser in Kirkwood, protesters outside included a group from Planned Parenthood, one costumed as a package of birth-control pills. Despite an outcry from parents and school officials about QuikTrip relocating north about a block from Flora Avenue to build a larger store at the already-congested Manchester-Big Bend intersection, Maplewood city officials have given the project a “tentative” go-ahead. The high school and middle school are scarcely a stone’s throw away. Opponents worry about the potential of more traffic and about having a nearby convenience store that sells alcohol and tobacco. Meanwhile, mobile food vendors remain verboten in the ’Wood. As elsewhere, there’s been a hue and cry from owners of stationary restaurants. At this writing, the city appeared inclined to give trucks a six-month trial. Perhaps that could start in, say, March, depending on what the groundhog does Feb. 2? Hurricane season has blown over. The chill in the air has made mosquitoes less obnoxious. Two out of
three ain’t bad. What’s the third thing, you ask? It’s flu season again. Flu shots hoped to combat this year’s strain of the ever-mutating virus are available almost everywhere, and they run from fairly inexpensive to free. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is providing free vaccinations for the remainder of the week. Adults 18 and older can visit the hospital’s main-floor lobby. Those in need of flu vaccinations for themselves, as well as children as young as 6 months, may go to the third floor lobby of BJC’s Center for Advanced Medicine, 4921 Parkview Place. Solar energy. No worries; it’s all good, right? Well, like nearly anything else, it depends on your perspective. If you’re displeased by the view out your kitchen window of a large array of solar panels in the yard next door… it’s probably not all good. This flap, one of the first items we featured when T&S was but a baby in early 2011, has been batted around by Town & Country officials since then. The city was scheduled at its final September meeting to hear public comment on a proposed ordinance that, save unusual circumstances, would designate the roof as the preferred location of a residential solar installation. The city could vote on the measure as early as next week. The race for state representative in the 87th District was at first thought to be as close as it could be: Stacy Newman of Richmond Heights was the apparent victor in the August primary over University City resident Susan Carlson—by one vote. Actually, no. Democratic voters were invited back to the polls Sept. 24, after election officials found that about 100 Brentwood voters were issued the wrong ballots. Newman won again, this time by a large margin. By the way,
she will also become the 87th district representitive, by default, since there’s no Republican candidate. Webster University has a presence in more countries around the world than you could shake a ruler at. (The school was founded in 1915 by the Sisters of Loretto, and didn’t nuns worth their salt wield rulers in disciplining even college students? What do I know? I’m a lapsed Presbyterian and product of the public schools.) Co-ed since the 1960s, the university features five distinct schools and colleges and is renowned for its evening programs geared to working adults. A campus in Ghana is slated to be up and running in time for the 2013-14 school year. Webster’s first international campus was founded in Switzerland in 1978. The university since has established campuses in Austria (1981), the Netherlands (1983), Great Britain (1986), Thailand (1999) and two in China (1996). Webster has more than 100 satellite locations.

The hits just keep on coming from Rep. Todd Akin. Maybe that should be ‘coming at.’ The latest for achin’ Akin comes compliments of his bride, Lulli, who expressed frustration that her husband was being treated as a pariah by donors and national GOP leaders. Todd is known for dressing like a Revolutionary-era patriot at his Fourth of July party. Lulli is also stuck in the 1770s, apparently. Quoted in late September by the National Journal, she compared Republicans’ shunning of Todd to the colonists’ harsh treatment by the British. Tyranny! That is, before the colonists said, as the Journal quotes Lulli, “you don’t come rape my daughters…” Yikes! That four-letter word again. The New Jersey Star-Ledger dubbed Lulli ‘Knucklehead of the Week.’ (Yes, that word, again.)

He said there was nothing he could do about that.” Two months later, the United States was attacked by al-Qaeda. ] [ David M. Walker, U.S. Comptroller General and head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) from 1998 to 2008, says he was surprised how his comments were used by filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza in 2016: Obama’s America. The film seeks to portray the America we’ll get if President Obama is re-elected. Walker, at Washington University recently, told me the president’s name never came up in interviews he participated in for the movie. ] [ What do jazz pianist Peter Martin, trumpeter/ vocalist Jeremy Davenport, and DJ Charlie Chan Soprano have in common? All graduated in the
University City High School Class of 1988. Classmate Rod Milam is so impressed
with his school’s many musical alums that he’s profiling them in a new documentary. Milam has identified 190 U. City alums working in the music business and interviewed 53 of them. ] [ Mary Delach Leonard and Melinda Leonard have written Clayton, Missouri: An Urban Story. The book, a celebration of the city’s centennial year 2013, answers my question, “Why is a street in Clayton named Maryland?” The Leonards tell us the street, originally Henderson Avenue, was renamed in honor of the home state of the Lindells, a prominent St. Louis family in the 1800s. ]

Paul Ross Jr. remembers getting coffee from Katie Kirk 15 years ago when she worked at Laduzzi coffeeshop and he worked down the street at Outdoors Inc. That encounter didn’t create any sparks, but their first date in fall 2010 definitely did, arranged after friends set them up. “We tease that we were each waiting for the right person,” Katie says—even if neither noticed that person at first. She and Paul were married June 16 at the Daniel Boone Home site in Defiance, Mo. The ceremony took place in the Old Peace Chapel, which the couple discovered during a trip to a nearby winery. “We stumbled across the cutest little church we both had ever seen,” Katie recalls. “It is just so full of character.” The reception featured a pie bar with cherry, key lime, blueberry, banana cream, apple and strawberry rhubarb varieties and was held at Wine Country Gardens. “I think that was the most memorable part, seeing family and friends in these unique Missouri settings,” Katie says. Katie is a real estate agent and Villa Duchesne alumna. Paul is a senior sales rep for Donaldson Aerospace & Defense St. Louis/Aerospace Filtration Systems and a Ladue High School grad who formerly worked in forest fire and rescue for the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service. They honeymooned in Curacao. “It was gorgeous: beautiful beaches and a really friendly island. We just had a really wonderful, relaxing honeymoon,” Katie says.

Fall is an exciting time for the major accessories. Shoes, boots and bags are what really indicate the change of season, in my book. Building a Shoe Wardrobe
suzy says
I recently cleaned out my closets and donated all my old pairs of shoes to charity. Now it’s time to go shopping and replenish with some new styles! Any suggestions?
This got me thinking. Few people get to start from scratch and buy an entire shoe wardrobe at once, but if you could, what would you buy for fall? Once I got started, I couldn’t stop and I realized there is plenty more I’d add to the collection! Here’s what I think would cover the basics, but there’s room for additions!

cover story Washington University
Sinus Institute]
by mary jo blackwood, RN MPH
Sinuses and noses have a lot in common, which makes diagnosing and treating problems tricky. Dr. Stanley Thawley, director of the Washington University Sinus Institute, explains the challenge: “Sinuses are bony cavities with the same type of tissue lining as the nose; inflammation and irritation in one usually affects the other. The inflammation can come from viral sources, allergies, or non-allergic stimuli. If the lining swells enough, sinuses can’t drain, trapping mucous, which is then a breeding ground for bacterial infections.” When someone comes into the Sinus Institute with chronic sinus infections, the team tries to get at the causes, because they are often triggered by a combination of several sources. If the person has allergies, those need to be identified and controlled. Sometimes patients will notice they get sinus infections seasonally or all year round due to allergies to pets and dust mites. The sinus and nasal linings also can swell from irritant triggers, like cigarette smoke, stress, dry air, gastric reflux disease, or chemical exposures. Some patients, says Thawley, may have contributing systemic conditions, like cystic fibrosis or a suppressed immune system. Then there are patients with structural problems that prevent sinus drainage: a deviated nasal septum, enlarged nasal turbinates, or nasal polyps. One of the best tools the Sinus Institute has at its disposal is the endoscope, a small instrument that allows doctors to look up the nose and into the openings of the sinuses to identify problems, or fix them with endoscopic sinus surgery. Says Thawley, “Most endoscopic sinus surgery is done for chronic sinusitis after
medical therapy has failed. It can take care of the problem as long as other contributing factors are controlled. We may clean out the sinuses and open the outlets for them to drain, but if the person still smokes, has uncontrolled allergies or gastric reflux, for example, the problems may continue to occur.” He says the Institute is doing more endoscopic sinus surgery because of the ease of the dr. stanley e. thawley Photo courtesy of Washington University Sinus Institute technology, but surgery is not a panacea. They have to look at the whole picture and other causes to help patients manage problems long-term.

Our health is probably the most important factor for our enjoyment of life. Managing it requires good information, which is sometimes hard to come by. To clear up the confusion, we asked the experts for the latest information on common conditions.
[ shoulder replacement ] We carry the weight of the world on our shoulders, and when they don’t work correctly, we’re in a world of pain. Dr. Micah Hobbs, surgeon, Orthopedic Associates The main reason for shoulder replacement is the same as for hips and knees: the wear and tear of arthritis. People who wear out their shoulders use them an unusual amount: wheelchair-bound patients or those whose jobs require a lot of lifting, pushing and pulling above the shoulders. There are two approaches to total shoulder replacement. Primary shoulder replacement is done when the rotator cuff is intact. It involves removing the top of the arm bone and inserting a metal ball, then resurfacing the shoulder blade with a plastic socket. Reverse shoulder replacement is used for patients whose rotator cuff is not intact. The ball goes on the scapula and the socket on the arm bone to allow the deltoid muscle to lift the arm without a rotator cuff. The goal of any shoulder replacement is pain relief. Research has produced shoulder implants that can be fit and customized to individual patients to improve range of motion and decrease pain.
Dr. Jason Browdy, Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine The incidence of arthritis in the shoulder is lower than in hips and knees because the shoulder is not a weight-bearing joint. Conditions that put us at risk include post-traumatic arthritis after a shoulder injury, gouty or rheumatoid arthritis and neurologic conditions in the cervical spine that can affect the shoulders. Shoulder arthritis has a spectrum of severity. Conservative treatment includes physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications and steroid injections. We use ultrasound-guided injections to more accurately place steroids where they will do the most good. If conservative treatment doesn’t work, surgical procedures that stop short of joint replacement include: cleaning out the joint with an arthroscope and putting in soft tissue to act as a cushion, and incremental shoulder replacements that involve putting a cap over the ball instead of replacing the ball. The main thing for people to remember is that neither our original parts nor their replacements last forever, so delay total joint replacements, if possible.

is right in your neighborhood. There’s even more to Kirkwood’s newest senior living community. At The Glen at Aberdeen Heights, you’ll discover a philosophy that gives loved ones more quality time together, even if needs change — with the support of trained, caring staff who honor each resident’s personal schedules and individual preferences.
[ bio-identical hormones ] The latest buzzphrase in hormone replacement therapy is bio-identical hormones. “These hormones have the same structure as a human hormone, but they’re made in a lab from yam or soy,” says Dr. Bryan Warner of BodyLogicMD of St. Louis. “People worry about hormones causing blood clots and cancer, but why, when our estrogen is highest at age 25, don’t we see more cancers then? It has more to do with the type of hormone and the route it takes.” Warner never prescribes estradiol, estrogen or testosterone orally. “Oral testosterone is associated with liver cancer. Oral estrogen goes through the liver, which creates clotting factors, raises blood lipids like triglycerides and cholesterol, and contributes to high blood pressure,” he explains. “But testosterone and estrogen can be more safely given as patches, gels, or injections of time-release pellets that disperse gradually over three to four months.” When women start to have perimenopausal symptoms, Warner measures hormone, vitamin and mineral levels. “People with menopausal symptoms are often low in magnesium and zinc,” he says. “They may also be low in B vitamins, which are necessary for hormones to work. Once we determine the right balance of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, magnesium and zinc, most women begin to feel a lot better.”

[ deep vein thrombosis ] Blood clots in the deep veins of the legs pose a variety of threats, both short- and long-term. How quickly we recognize serious symptoms and seek help makes all the difference in outcome. Dr. Mark Blumenthal, Vein Center and CosMed Deep vein thrombosis can occur anywhere along the legs. The most dangerous clots are the high ones because pieces can break off and go through the right side of the heart into the lung, causing a pulmonary embolism. The most common DVT, however, occurs in the deep veins surrounded by the calf muscles. It can cause swelling in the calf or ankles and tenderness in the muscle, but is unlikely to form an embolism. DVT therapy includes blood thinner injections initially and a longer-term course of Coumadin, an oral anticoagulant. Patients who have had a DVT are more likely to have another one because it makes the vein surface rougher and more likely to clot. A sedentary lifestyle or sitting or lying for long periods can predispose individuals to clot formation. There is no evidence that varicose veins promote DVT, but if DVT is ignored, it can cause varicose veins. Dr. Ricardo Rao, Midwest Vein Center Causes of DVT include surgery, injury, blood stasis from not moving or a hypercoagulative state, thickened blood due to a congenital defect or a developed condition. Women on birth control pills or oral estrogen have an increased risk for developing these clots. If patients have signs of DVT, they need prompt treatment. When clots go undiagnosed for more than a few days, the one-way valves needed to return the blood to the heart get damaged, causing blood to pool. That creates swelling; the skin thickens and hardens, and hemoglobin pigment leaches out into the skin, darkening it and eventually creating leg ulcers, a condition called post-thrombotic syndrome. For clots in the higher and larger iliac and femoral veins, studies are showing that removing those through thrombectomy catheters as soon as possible is better than using blood thinners alone. That prevents them breaking off and going to the lung, or turning into post-thrombotic syndrome.

[ preventing & treating bunions ] Dr. Michael Horwitz, Feet for Life Podiatry Centers Bunions, a painful deformity of the big toe, can make every step painful. Bunions don’t form by themselves. The tendency may be inherited, but they’re generally caused by ligament laxity and excessive pronation. If you can grab your thumb and bend it backwards to touch your forearm, you have lax ligaments and probably have a tendency to pronate. Pronation of the foot occurs when the heel bone angles inward and the arch tends to collapse. It can lead to pain in the foot, knee, hip and even back. The latest treatment for over-pronation is the subtalar implant, a metal implant inserted into the soft tissue of the foot in a two-minute office procedure under local anesthesia. No orthotics or other external foot alignment is needed, and the implant can stay in for life, but is easy to remove if needed. I have used them on patients from age 5 to 70-plus. Orthotics can brace the problem, but implants control the foot gently from the inside. It fills in the small area under the ankle joint, the area that controls pronating. Surgery to correct bunions is complex and has a fairly long recovery time. Fixing the pronation problem prevents the bunion and can make everything else feel better.

[ anesthesia options ] Many of us remember a time when anesthesia was the worst part of surgery. If you haven’t had surgery in a while, you’ll be amazed at the range of patientfriendly methods now in use. “In the last 15 years, we’ve made leaps in how people feel post-operatively, and anesthesia is safer than ever when administered correctly,” says Dr. Patricia Gramling-Babb, associate professor of anesthesiology at Saint Louis University. ”Patients have a lot of options these days, depending on the procedure they’re undergoing.” The range of choices has expanded beyond general anesthesia, an epidural, a spinal or a local. “We now have three major general anesthetics that produce no hangover, and we can combine them with other methods for the best results, depending on the circumstances,” Gramling-Babb says. Epidurals, anesthesia administered through a catheter in the epidural space at the base of the spine, is still used 80 percent of the time for labor pain, she notes. “The nice thing about the epidural catheter is that it can be re-dosed at a different level for post-surgical pain relief,” she adds. For orthopedic surgeries, anesthesiologists often use IV twilight sleep with a local nerve block. “The IV wears off quickly when stopped, while the nerve block continues to provide post-operative pain relief,” Gramling-Babb says. “Patients are able to move their muscles, but feel better and don’t need as many post-operative narcotics.”

[ what we love! ] hair product systems by dorothy weiner | photo by charles barnes
We’ve all been there: standing at the mirror, staring at dry, lifeless hair and wanting to run out that instant for new shampoo and conditioner, not to mention mousse, oil and other sundry products that promise revived tresses. Well, a simple recipe for gorgeous hair may not exist, but not all shampoos and conditioners are created equal, either. This is one area in beauty where you should mix it up. Experts agree that routinely switching products is good for your hair. So we’ve chosen a few brands we admire, just to give you food for thought (and for your hair) when your current shampoo runs out.

>lactic acid

pureology Precious Oil
Melu Anti-breakage Lustrous Shampoo
Absolut Repair Cellular Shampoo
Awapuhi Wild Ginger Hydromist Blow-Out Spray
Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner
Pureology’s Precious Oil line promises to “restore shine and fullness and protect color” with its zero-sulfate and zero-silicone formulations. This brand makes some of the best-smelling products I’ve ever used. The ‘system’ includes shampoo, conditioner, hair masque and oil you apply on damp hair, like you would Moroccan oil.
The Italian line Davines has a European esthetic that emphasizes natural ingredients. Its Melu regimen is based on spinach extract, said to add vitamins and antioxidants to hair for a soft and shiny finish. The active agents are supposed to “remineralize and strenghten with their hydrating and nourishing properties.” The Davines Melu line smells great and felt wonderful when I tested it.
L’Oreal’s Professionnel line includes an Absolut Repair Cellular system meant to “repair hair at the cellular level.” The softening products include lactic acid and are supposed to yield stronger, softer hair with renewed shine. I’ve used the shampoo, and it is indeed softening and has a light, apricot-y scent.
Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi line is also sulfate-free and extremely hydrating. It includes keratin proteins, which are supposed to “rebuild hair” (especially important for color-treated tresses), and its Wild Ginger scent is positively delicious (I routinely use the conditioner). This line also earned three Best of Beauty Awards from Allure magazine last year for its Moisturizing Lather Shampoo, Keratin Cream Rinse and Styling Oil Treatment.
Aveda’s Pure Abundance line is supposed to add volume without adding weight. I like Aveda because it’s plant-based and affordable. This particular line has everything from a powdery ‘hair potion’ to a volumizing spray and a style prep, all promising “weightless volume and body from naturally derived boosters.” Ingredients include aloe and acacia gum.

Bridge with Bl♠nd
Back in the day, play and defense were the most important facets of the game. Nowadays, bidding is the most important. Yes, we still need to play and defend, but when we bid to the right spot, we’re hard to beat. (Alas, so are the opponents!) While playing in the recent St. Louis Regional Championships, local ‘pros’ Tom Oppenheimer and Rod Beery found themselves behind at halftime in a championship match. Practiced partnerships have the bidding advantage in close matches. Oppenheimer and Beery fit the bill. Two hands demonstrated their expertise. The first, with Beery sitting North, opened one ♦. Oppenheimer, South, bid one ♠. Beery then jumped to four ♣ (splinter bid), and when the last bid was made, the partnership was in a grand slam in ♠! The hand: NORTH ♠ K 10 9 7 ♥ A J 6 ♦ A 10 9 8 6 ♣ A
SOUTH ♠ AQJ86 ♥ 10 ♦ KQ75 ♣ K43 The play: West led a trump and when South drew trumps and found the ♦ Jack, the grand slam was home. The opposing team only bid a small slam, a big pick up for Oppenheimer and Beery. The opposing team was still ahead going into the last hand. This time South took a chance and opened two no trump with a singleton King of ♣! That was all Beery needed, and he drove the hand to a small slam in ♥.
The hand:
NORTH ♠8 ♥ J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 ♦ 6 ♣ A Q 10 9 5
SOUTH ♠ A 10 9 5 ♥ A72 ♦ AKQJ9 ♣K The play: West led a ♠; Oppenheimer won and trumped a ♠. When the Jack of ♥ was covered by the King and won with the Ace, the Queen was conceded and 12 tricks claimed. The opponents failed again to duplicate the result. Oppenheimer and Beery’s team won the event. Excellent bidding wins again!
tip of the day]
Q. So much is made about splinter bids. Are they really that important? A. Absolutely, especially during high-level auctions. With one bid you can tell your partner how many losers your side has in a particular suit. Also your partner is able to evaluate the worth of his high cards. When holding ‘value points’ (Kings and Queens) in your short suit, your partner should devalue his hand.

Creating a house from scratch appeals to many “When we do our projects, each room has its own We can customize stationery, clothing and jewelry, but none of it is people, Rechan believes, but the prospect can also aura,” Rechan says. He recently helped build a home nearly as exciting as creating, from the ground up, the place we call home. That has long been the belief of St. Louis developer Michael Rechan of Michael Lauren Development. “Home building, for the consumer, is sort of the zenith of that trend,” he says. Rechan has built some of the most admired homes in Clayton’s Old Town neighborhood and other areas, many designed specifically for particular homeowners. “The client is essentially able not only to pick out everything, but design that home around their needs, their desires, and really build something that reflects their style, design sensibilities and sense of space,” he says. To educate homeowners on the process, he and architect Paul Doerner of The Lawrence Group will host a custom home-building presentation in Clayton Oct. 6 that will include a tour of some Michael Lauren homes.
seem intimidating. People may think they need to draw up elaborate plans by themselves before approaching a developer, but, Rechan says, this is simply not the case. “If you hire a quality architect and builder who understand the process and are professional, they shoulder the complexity of the building process,” he explains. “The client is really able to focus on the cool part of what building a home is: figuring out what they want and working to capture their vision.” Rechan advises people to work with a builderarchitect team from the outset rather than starting just with an architect. “Together we are able to discern the client’s core requirements, sketch preliminary floor plans, provide some cost guidance and give the client a sense of building-lot size requirements,” Rechan says. Michael Lauren can also help analyze applicable municipal ordinances.
for one young couple with children who wanted an East Coast cedar shake-style home with contemporary updates. The house includes an intimate parlor where the wife can entertain her friends. A play room in another area of the home features a stage where the kids can put on shows. The hallways are designed to make the home feel larger, and the rooms’ sight lines are intended to create a sense of space. “Each living space had its own definition that was set up in a way that achieved an open feel while still having defined spaces for different purposes,” Rechan says. Seeing a finished customized home is gratifying for the family and all who worked with them along the way. “Bringing that vision from concept to reality is super satisfying,” Rechan says. “Everything works in an architecturally and aesthetically pleasing way. It really enhances a family’s entire lifestyle.”
Michael Lauren Development’s Clayton Garden Homes Tour will be 9:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 6 at 8301 Maryland Ave., Ste. 100. For more information or to register, visit claytongardenstour.com Cover design by sarah gibson | Cover photo by suzy gorman

homework]
Dear Homework,
My bachelor son is ready to make improvements on his home, but needs a lot of help. Can you suggest a new front porch and landscaping to turn this into an attractive house? Thank you for taking the time. ———Where to Begin?
Dear where to begin,
After
before
Your son has purchased an excellent property upon which to make improvements and increase equity. I am going to make the assumption that this is your son’s ‘starter home’ and that budget is a priority. With that in mind, I have kept the architectural changes to a minimum. A simple shed roof with ornamental brackets replaces the collapsing awning. Window boxes and shutters add easy, clip-on details that can be implemented when money allows. Paint will give you the biggest bang for your buck and will help the home’s simple details get noticed. The landscape is a complete disaster. Nothing is worth saving. I am showing a stepped retaining wall to deal with the severe slope. Building a light pier with the block adds a sense of welcome and architectural detail. Planting ivy on the hill would be an even cheaper option, and dogwood trees would be the appropriate size and shape to frame the house and driveway. A variety of plants will mask the tall, exposed foundation wall. Finally, don’t forget about the garage. Adding a cupola and a carriage-style door will give a much more finished feel. Any of these changes could be done separately or in phases. They make the house much more charming and increase value. Good luck on the transformation. ———Homework HomeWork is penned by Paul Doerner, president, The Lawrence Group. if you would like your home critiqued, contact us at homework@townandstyle.com

“
but the management and leasing business is booming. Just ask Kelly Manion, a leasing specialist/realtor at West End Management. “Because we’re involved in leasing instead of sales, our market is stronger,” she explains. “Business is flourishing and continues to grow. In fact, we had a record-breaking number of closed transactions this past summer.” She and her teenage daughter live in Ballwin. I spent a few years as a medical assistant, but I had a family background in real estate: my mom had been Gordon Gundaker’s executive assistant, and I started helping her with filing when I was 15. Real estate always seemed like the next logical step for my sister, Gina Laux, and me. So she and I decided to get our licenses. Now we work together at West End. Each day starts with plenty of coffee! There’s always something new to tackle. At West End, we facilitate the leasing process and offer professional property management for single-family homes. We also handle community association management, which involves overseeing landscaping, maintenance and overall supervision of lofts, villas and subdivisions. On a typical day I meet with owners and tenants, deal with maintenance issues, show properties, handle move-ins, and negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. I’m a caregiver. I’m very attentive to client needs and try to make them feel as comfortable as possible. The owners make the final decision on who they’re going to rent to, so I sometimes have to turn people down who had been hoping to get the property. That’s my least favorite part of the job. If you don’t like people, you’d better find another line of work. To be successful in real estate, you need to cater to client needs and concerns. Constant communication is key; clients appreciate updates on any and all activity. I honestly don’t encounter that many difficult clients. When it does happen, I truly listen to what they have to say. I let them know their needs are important and respected. At the end of a long, rough day, I enjoy making a nice meal to share with my daughter, followed by a romp with our two dogs. It puts everything in perspective.
