[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] In this issue’s parenting column, Dr. Jordan talks about the deleterious effects of spanking and other forms of corporal punishment for kids. Yet boomers grew up at a time when this was totally acceptable, hard as that may be to imagine now. I remember being chased around the dining room table more than once, although I’m not sure what my mother would have done if she’d caught me. What I am sure of is that it was an exercise in futility. Just like when I slept over at a young friend’s house and her parents wouldn’t let me get up from the table until I finished my cereal. Or went to a birthday party and was forced to eat the cake (really). It never succeeded in making me like cereal or cake any better. Yet these and other bullying behaviors were commonplace when boomers were growing up. But as with advances in other areas over the past 50 years—think how much more enlightened we are today about lasers, religious and racial equality, medicines and mental illness—we also understand childhood better. Today we treat young people like individuals in their own right, not like possessions of their parents. You need take only one look at a hulking Adrian Peterson to see how wrong it is for him to touch a child in anger. If we want kids to grow up confident and happy, we have to treat them like they have the right to.

THE NINE NETWORK of Public Media has received two Emmy Awards from the Mid-America Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Nine Network president and CEO Jack Galmiche accepted the Special Achievement Community Service Emmy for the station’s on-air coverage about the nation’s high school dropout crisis. Jim Kirchherr and Anne-Marie Berger accepted an Emmy in the Special Assignment/Program/Special category for Open for Business, a report on the health insurance marketplace.

The late GEORGIA FRONTIERE, former owner of the St. Louis Rams, is still contributing to civic life in St. Louis. Horoscope: The Astrology Murders, a suspense novel she wrote before her passing in 2008, was released recently in partnership with Safe Connections, a local nonprofit that works to end domestic and sexual violence. Frontiere’s daughter, Lucia Rodriguez, was in town to promote the book, which is available online and at local bookstores and Rams games. A portion of proceeds will benefit Safe Connections.

DR. GRAHAM COLDITZ, a disease prevention expert at Siteman Cancer Center and Washington University School of Medicine, was honored for Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Prevention Research by the American Association for Cancer Research. The organization presented him with the award at its conference in New Orleans, where Colditz spoke on the challenges and opportunities in breast cancer research. As an internationally recognized leader in cancer prevention, Colditz has an interest in the preventable causes of chronic disease, especially among women. He previously has focused on the health effects of smoking, weight and weight gain, physical activity and diet.

Renowned musician WYNTON MARSALIS AND THE JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA (of which he is artistic director) performed at the grand opening of the Harold and Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz in the Grand Center arts district. EDUCATING A CHILD IS A LOT LIKE GROWING A GARDEN. Both have unique needs that must be understood and met. Both require loving care, patience and attention, and both need to be nurtured and shaped. Forsyth School has been helping children bloom into their full potential since 1961. “By providing a challenging, engaging curriculum, a supportive atmosphere and opportunities for success, we help students cultivate their intelligence, talents and self-confidence,” says environmentalist and science teacher Gary Schimmelpfenig. “Teaching them to understand, appreciate and respect nature has always been part of our mission.” One of many innovative ways students learn at Forsyth is through hands-on science activities like Back to Our Roots, a native plant initiative on school grounds. The project’s latest phase, a collaboration among students, parents, faculty and the St. Louis Audubon Society, began last year on the school’s newly expanded campus. “We’ve had a native habitat garden on the far eastern side of campus since 2007, but recently found ourselves with three additional areas of open land: the front and back yards of Next House, a historic home on Wydown Boulevard purchased for more classroom space in 2012, and a field on the western edge of campus, acquired in 2011,” Schimmelpfenig recalls. “So, working with our trustees, plant and land committee, and facilities manager Michael Mitchell and his team, we decided to continue beautifying our empty spaces in ways that give students more opportunities to interact with nature.” Mitch Leachman, executive director of the St. Louis Audubon Society, gladly accepted when a past Forsyth parent and Audubon Society volunteer invited him to pitch in. “I led the plant selection and design effort for the front of Next House, and assisted with the songbird hedge along the west and north sides of campus,” he explains. The goal: to select sustainable, low-maintenance native plants, such as rose verbena, native dogwood, sumac, holly and vibernum, which attract hundreds of species of native birds and insects with food, shelter and breeding space. “Native woody plants, unlike popular ornamentals from Europe and Asia, provide food for butterfly and moth caterpillars, which in turn become critical protein sources for songbirds,” he says. “We also took care to choose some plants that flower across the entire growing season, for students to learn from and enjoy.” Many of the plants were installed with help from students, says parent Megan Clinton, who contributed to the Next House landscape design with past parent Susan Pang. Both are graduates of Missouri Botanical Garden’s master gardener program. “I have three sons at Forsyth, and this ongoing effort heightens their awareness, curiosity and connection to the natural world,” Clinton says. “They’re learning that human beings are part of a larger, interdependent web.” The project enhances their education and development, and instills a passion for lifelong learning, she adds. “And it brings joy and beauty to everyone involved.”

Disappointing a Catholic parish—but making at least one atheist happy—Ballwin’s city council has put the kibosh on the ‘In God We Trust’ sign that had been proposed for the wall behind the dais in the council chambers. Proponents of the four words, including the Knights of Columbus at Holy Infant Catholic Church, said the words represent patriotism, not religion. Begging to differ, atheist Nikki Moungo recently made an impassioned plea before the council. Her main point was that the sign would create controversy where none has existed; in essence, why invite trouble? Aldermen voted 6-2 not to accept the K of C’s $750 donation to install the 12 letters, which have been stamped on the nation’s coinage since 1864 and have been the nation’s motto since 1956. But it isn’t the city’s motto—that’s ‘Bringing People Together.’ For residents like Moungo, that and the failed proposal would have been at cross purposes. Nationwide, that seems to be the case for most municipalities where the issue hasn’t passed muster. But it has in at least one town in the metro: The phrase has been approved for a number of government facilities in St. Peters. Meanwhile, what happens to the rejected $750 donation in Ballwin? Well, shrubbery looks nice, and it’s not too expensive. The familiar cyclist icons on pavement are expanding throughout the metro as new bicycle lanes are being created in the StL. These continue to augment routes previously established in the county, from close-in suburbs like Clayton out to Kirkwood. Great Rivers Greenway and Trailnet reps joined Hizzoner Francis Slay in announcing that 40 additional miles of bicycle lanes will be available and clearly marked in the city by next spring. In this, the third phase of the Bike St. Louis initiative that got underway in 2004, the 60 miles of route already established also will be marked afresh. Our emphasis here is on fresh, as in refreshing. The regional approach represented by the cooperation of various agencies truly is making The Lou and its environs more bike-friendly, from repurposing a once-idled train

trestle in the city to former railroad right-of-way in Clayton and Kirkwood. It really doesn’t need a great deal of money to back pedal power. Inter-jurisdictional cooperation is critical, of course, to developing seamless transition from one community to the next. But more important is increasing understanding between citizens who travel on two and four wheels (see Sunset Hills item). In some ways, cyclists and drivers have a mutual distrust reminiscent of U.S. relations with the former Soviet Union. Détente helped that. But for the love to spread here, all you need is paint. Every town endures growing pains of one sort or another, and for Creve Coeur, it comes with a ‘drive-thru’ lane. At present, McDonald’s is the only drive-through restaurant in town, but several others are in line at city hall, either to build or to retrofit existing buildings. The city’s planning and zoning body is mulling over a global approach to the issue, rather than handling each request piecemeal, which just seems to make sense in an ounce-of-prevention framework. Creve Coeur is considering, among other things, reducing the plot size a drive-through restaurant may occupy from 3 to 2 acres. The establishment would need to be situated no fewer than 50 feet from the nearest residential property line. Does this mean that many more such restaurants will be able to move into town? Actually, maybe not. At this juncture in the ordinance-crafting process, there are restrictions aplenty, e.g.; the restaurants would be stand-alone only if another commercial building also occupies the property, or would need to be part of a strip center that includes no other restaurants. Earlier this year, Panera Bread’s request for changes to its existing restaurant was denied. Opponents, of course, fear an eventual glut of fast-food joints and the concomitant increase in traffic and noise. Begs the question: Just how many more of the same-old, same-old comfort-food eateries does the metro really need? Is your workout routine getting a little flabby? Research by Gold’s Gym says it probably is. According to Gold’s, October is the month with the lowest number of gym check-ins, which has led the fitness chain to help you (or anyone) pick up the pace, or get started. As an incentive, Gold’s is opening all gyms nationwide for free every weekend of October. (Gold’s has a number of area locations, including 2601 State Highway K in O’Fallon.) Here are a few tips from fitness expert Jamie Eason, who helped with the Gold’s research: • Seasonal change—As summer gives way to fall, the weather and workouts cool down, easing up on the regimen associated with maintaining a firm, trim physique. • Earlier nightfall—With daylight waning and clocks

falling back, motivation flags and people can become less active. Gold’s knows that for some, it’s going to be a mad rush to maintain a fit appearance closer to the holidays. Some may relax until a few weeks before Thanksgiving. Others might start hibernating now, maybe to awaken just in time to start another New Year’s resolution. A new Rooster is crowing on grand South Grand in St. Louis. For fans of the crêperie at 1104 Locust St. downtown, this is a welcome addition. For those who haven’t had the pleasure, George Takei would probably say, ‘Oh myyy.’ The space, festooned with the fowl whimsy of roosters painted by elementary school kids, is large enough to seat a regiment. A repurposed and expanded bank building that had lain a-rusting for years at 3150 S. Grand Blvd., the restaurant is right at home among the eclectic offerings that stretch from Arsenal south to Humphrey: Three Vietnamese places, two Thai, one pan-Asian, an Italian, plus various eateries that represent most anywhere else around the planet, from Moroccan and Ethiopian fare to the allST. LOUIS

American City Diner. For those not in the know (your trusty scribe was included), Rooster is another brainchild of David Bailey, prime mover of Bailey’s Chocolate Bar, Small Batch, The Fifth Wheel and Bailey’s Range. (Although you’d think the surname would have given away two of them.) Lovers of the Locust location should be encouraged by the Grand spot’s hours of operation: 7 a.m.-10 p.m., a full seven hours later than the flagship location (it shutters at 3). And this raises the bar even higher for eating too much on Sunday morning in and around Tower Grove Park, what with the likes of bodacious brunches at Moab’s and Piper Palm House. Mark Furrer, mayor of Sunset Hills, has been charged with two felonies for the July altercation with a racing cyclist who some have termed a road-rage incident. Furrer was charged with first-degree property damage and second-degree assault. Cyclists nationwide

Sunset Hills police, who did not ticket the mayor, turned the investigation over to county police. Once the story went viral via social media, Furrer was deluged with calls and emails from an angry cycling community; locally, hundreds rode to city hall a few days afterward to raise ‘Share the Road’ awareness. Not surprisingly, Murdick’s and Furrer’s stories differ significantly. The write-in mayor claims Murdick ran a stop sign and fell after grabbing onto the car; Murdick claims Furrer shouted an obscenity and swerved, forcing him to lose his balance. About the only thing both admit to is using colorful language. Murdick’s attorney reportedly said he was expected to be out of action for a month after he fell. Since prosecutors announced the charges, at least one alderman has called for Furrer to step down. If convicted of a felony, he would be required by law to do so. Bullying, although often called other things, is still bullying. At schools, when practiced by fraternities or athletic teams, it’s called hazing. Although not condoned by organizations most anywhere nowadays—allegedly—it goes on, much to the chagrin of educators, administrators, parents, and young people who want to ‘belong.’ At The Principia, a private secondary school in Town & Country, police were called in August to investigate an assault, which cops characterized as an incident of hazing. Although authorities at the school have been mum in the media, parents say the school got word out to the school community posthaste. Police say their investigation is complete and that the matter has been presented to county prosecutors for review. Reportedly as many as five kids are in hot water over the incident, as well they should be. Hazing ranges from harmless pranks to bodily harm. Nearly anyone who has endured it wouldn’t characterize it as amusing. Such ‘rites of passage’ are antiquated. And if an assault or other crime has been committed, it should be prosecuted as such. Gate-gate, maybe they should call it. That is, to some folks in particular communities, it’s a big hairy deal. To others, it’s like, meh. Wildwood recently held a public hearing on gated communities, an issue about which residents of most of the towns we talk about have little or no concern. (Must be nice. I know, right?) For the last two decades, there has been a ban in the city. But now city officials are considering allowing gated committees, under certain conditions. The pros and cons both boil down to safety. For some residents, gates would be a hindrance to burglars, creeps and other strangers who would enter their neighborhoods. Essentially, it’s for the kids. Public-safety officials also look at safety, but from the other side of the gate. Sometimes it’s not easy to access a gated community quickly in case of a fire or other emergency.

CELEBRATE THE STRENGTH WITHIN. This positive message is at the heart of Visitation Academy’s newly dedicated middle school program. The all-girls Catholic school (except for toddlers through kindergarten) was founded in 1833 on the ideals of the Visitation sisters’ Salesian spirituality to ‘live Jesus.’ Until this year, it offered a lower school for toddlers through sixth grade and an upper school for seventh through 12th. But as the school worked on a strategic plan in 2010, it felt the need for a bridge between the lower and upper schools. Head of school Rosalie Henry says they realized a distinct program would allow middle school students a greater chance to shine in their own leadership roles, academic endeavors and spiritual journeys. “This is the inaugural year, and the students absolutely love having their own middle school,” Henry says. “We can now cater to this unique group of girls at a time that will affect them the rest of their lives. We wanted to focus on giving these girls the structure and support they need in a nurturing, rigorous environment.” Jane Eschmann, former assistant principal at CBC for 15 years, was named the new middle school principal, and Henry says she serves as a loving, nurturing ‘go-to person’ for both parents and students. Before the 2014-15 school year, Eschmann, who was on the board at Visitation when she was hired, spent a year collaborating with faculty and staff to establish a curriculum and extracurricular activities specifically designed for this age group. “They have their own student council, literary magazine, choir, creative writing club and campus minister, to name a few, and they’ll put on a separate play and Christmas concert,” she says. Eschmann pulled faculty from the upper and lower schools who showed a sincere interest in moving to the middle school grade levels. “These years can be challenging for girls, so we got those involved who have a passion for teaching women of this age,” she notes. She says the teachers promote an interactive, investigative approach to learning that includes field trips and hands-on activities, such as outdoor team-building exercises for sixth-graders at Trout Lodge, a seventh-grade retreat in the Great Smoky Mountains and an eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C. “Every experience is tied to the curriculum, but students are learning about socialization and how to work as a team, too,” she explains. The girls also have a chance to interact and form friendships with those not in their class through the community system. Along with small adviser-led groups in each grade, the ‘communities’ include students from sixth through eighth grade. “Every grade level within the community plans a social or service activity each semester, which gives them a chance to get to know the other girls on a more personal level,” Eschmann explains. From uniform distinctions to clubs and programs established for their needs, middle-schoolers now have multiple opportunities to stand out in the student body. “We don’t want to segregate them totally from the upper school, but they won’t be lost in the shuffle anymore,” Eschmann says. “They have their own place to shine, grow and lead.”

WITH THE NFL in the hot seat, the issue of child abuse has been once again on the front pages. So is the debate about spanking children, and what is appropriate when ‘disciplining’ our kids. According to Dr. Murray Straus, who has studied the effects of spanking for 40 years, more than 100 studies have demonstrated the following effects of spanking children: increased probability the child will hit other children, their parents, and dating or marital partners; antisocial behaviors; mental health problems; and even decreased gray matter in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. But there are also additional hidden costs with corporal punishment, ones I have heard straight from kids for years. The following are direct quotes from teens wrote: I felt violated! It leaves me feeling empty and like I’ll never be whole. I felt so bad and betrayed. I lost trust in my dad for a really long time. Getting hit sucks, but when it’s by a parent, it’s like being shot. I felt scared of my dad, and I decided I could never open up and tell him what was going on in my life. I wished he would leave and never come back. I felt unwanted. The feelings kids are left with after spankings also can affect behaviors that extend into adulthood. Children who feel sadness may shut down, numb out or take on an ‘I don’t care’ attitude, which can result in addictions as adults. Some end up becoming pleasers who give up their own thoughts and needs to avoid their parent’s anger and punishments. Kids who experience fear from being hit can end up overly sensitive to chaos and anger as adults, as it brings them back to emotions they felt as children. They may become averse to trying new things or taking risks for fear of making mistakes or failing, if, in childhood, those brought severe consequences. Children who are spanked a lot often lose their self esteem, and as adults, they may have a hard time setting healthy boundaries in their relationships. If you don’t feel a sense of self worth, you won’t do what is necessary to defend yourself, which is why women go back to abusive partners over and over again. If there is a lot of chaos in a home that makes kids feel out of control, they will internalize that and consequently spend the rest of their lives trying to control everything to create a sense of calm and peace. The most injurious consequence for kids who are spanked was described well by the last teen girl above: feeling unwanted and unloved. These children may develop trust issues that make it hard for them to experience real closeness in their relationships, including with a marriage partner. Their parents, who they were supposed to be able to count on the most, betrayed their trust, and it’s hard to recover from that. Avoiding closeness may protect them from being hurt again, but it leaves them alone and empty. I have comforted thousands of kids and teens over the years who were feeling intense emotions after being spanked. There are effective alternatives to discipline kids. Drew Boland, student body president at DeSmet Jesuit High School, is leading a nationwide effort to address the lack of access to clean water for millions of people around the world. Starting this month and continuing through March, DeSmet students will join other Jesuit high school students across the country in a campaign to raise money for water.org, which provides resources, manpower and logistics to build sustainable wells and working restrooms in developing countries. John Burroughs junior Cole Gieseking chose Aim High as the beneficiary of his Eagle Scout project when his math teacher, Aim High co-director Kevin McKone, informed him the nonprofit had no support for its athletic program. Gieseking organized an equipment drive at Sports Authority in Brentwood, asking shoppers to purchase desired items from a list he passed out at the door. He also went to neighbors and sent out hundreds of letters asking for donations. The drive collected more than 300 items, enough to fully stock the Aim High athletic programs at both the John Burroughs and Priory campuses. Aim High is a four-year, tuition-free program for fifth- through eighth-graders who have demonstrated potential, the majority of whom come from challenging economic and social circumstances.

MARIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Students from Marian Middle School donned pink hard hats to build a wheelchair ramp for a young man with a spinal cord injury at his South City home. The girls took turns with construction and neighborhood clean-up while also learning about power tools, physical disabilities and construction careers. The project was made possible by a grant from Emerson awarded to math/STEM teacher Heather Olsen. Olsen applied for the grant after receiving an Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award.

Lacrosse runs in the family for MICDS sophomore Harry Wellford. His mom owned a lacrosse equipment store, his brother helped MICDS win two state championships, and his sister, a senior, also plays for the school. So it was a natural choice for the 16-year-old to pick up a stick 10 years ago and make his mark on the field. Ranked as one of the top 25 Young Gun Sophomores of 2014 by Inside Lacrosse, Wellford has accomplished a lot in the sport at a young age. Along with playing on the high school team, he also is affiliated with multiple club teams: 3d Colorado, Project Missouri and West Coast Starz. As a freshman, he had a rewarding season across the board: His 3d Colorado team won the FIL World Lacrosse Championships and the U.S. Lacrosse U15 National Championships, and MICDS won the state championship. But along with the first-place finishes comes a true appreciation for the sport. “On all my teams, it’s like a family,” Wellford says. “All the players genuinely care for each other, and we all have a good time.” Wellford has given a verbal commitment to play at the University of Virginia. “I just felt at home when I visited,” he says. “They are ranked in the top three in the country for lacrosse, and the coach is the all-time winningest lacrosse coach in the history of the game.” Wellford is the only St. Louis player to commit to an Atlantic Coast Conference school. “One of the biggest reasons I chose Virginia is because it was in the ACC, which offers the best competition in the country.” His success doesn’t come without hard work. Practices at school begin in February, and in the off season, Wellford, who also plays football, trains four times a week with Project Missouri, a club team led by MICDS head coach Andy Kay. He also travels nationally with the West Coast Starz, which is composed of the top players from the West Coast and Midwest. For now, Wellford is looking forward to the upcoming school season. “Hopefully we’ll win another state championship.”

Alison Pinnock, a junior at Ursuline Academy, didn’t have much exposure to field hockey when she decided to join the high school team freshman year. “I played very briefly in sixth grade and just picked it because I didn’t have a fall sport to play,” she says. It turned out to be a good decision. The17-year-old was named Rookie of the Year as a sophomore and has had national success with her club team, Aim Field Hockey. In 2013, the team won second at the Regional Club Championship and placed fourth overall at the National Club Championship. This summer, the team won first place at regionals and placed seventh at nationals. “Making it all the way to nationals two years in a row was a huge accomplishment,” Pinnock says. “My club coaches have really taught me a lot about the sport, and it’s a great opportunity to play with other girls from local high schools.” Her club team practices only when the high school season is complete, but it’s a year-round committment. “We have an indoor winter league, a spring league and we play in the tournaments in the summer. When we practice, it’s three to four days a week,” she explains. The Ursuline team practices every day during the week, and some weekends. “We have a new coach this year, and we’re really working on developing as a team,” she says. “I like playing with the high school team because it’s all about having fun.” Pinnock, who also is on the soccer team, says she hopes to continue playing at the college level.

Sean Christman, a junior at DeSmet Jesuit High School, has a simple answer for why he started playing rugby: It sounded fun. His older brother also played the sport and encouraged him to try it. He has high hopes for the upcoming season, which starts in the spring. IS RUGBY AS ROUGH AS PEOPLE THINK? You can get injured in any sport, so it’s really overexaggerated with rugby. People don’t get hurt as often as you think. There’s an optional scrum cap you can wear that protects your ears. WHAT IS THE PRACTICE SCHEDULE LIKE? During the season, we practice four days a week. In the summer, my teammates and I play in a sevens league (seven players on the field), which is a different form of rugby than through school, when we play with 15 on the field. In fall and winter, we just try to get out and throw the ball around. HOW POPULAR IS RUGBY IN ST. LOUIS? It’s a growing sport. There are only eight high schools here that have a team, so we travel all around Missouri. DO YOU HAVE ANY DESIRE TO PLAY AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

Definitely. There are men’s leagues in St. Louis, and lots of colleges have rugby as a club sport. HOW DOES THE TEAM LOOK THIS YEAR? I think we’re going to do really well this season. Last year we lost a lot of seniors, so it was a young team, and it was a learning experience for most of the guys. I’m looking forward to this year. DO YOU PLAY ANY OTHER SPORTS? I wrestle and am a running back and linebacker on the football team, but rugby is my favorite. OCTOBER 15, 2014

CONCERNED PARENTS SEEK EVERY ADVANTAGE for their children, hoping to give them an edge in an increasingly competitive, complex world. Independent Schools of St. Louis helps hone that edge. “ISSL is passionate about the merits of independent education,” says executive director Jamie Driver. “Member schools provide unparalleled educational opportunities to St. Louis families, including outstanding teachers with advanced degrees; innovative, value-driven curriculum; low student-to-teacher ratios; a high degree of parental partnership; a safe, disciplined environment; and a unique ability to tailor each student’s education to his or her specific needs.” The nonprofit professional association, established in 1972, includes 45 independently governed elementary and secondary schools throughout the metropolitan region. “These acclaimed schools for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 focus on excellence over a complete range of educational experiences,” Driver explains. “We have something to suit every family, from traditional day schools to boarding schools and special-needs education. Some are religiously affiliated, others are nondenominational.” Diversity is welcomed and encouraged. “All our schools admit students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin, and all offer needs-based financial aid,” she says. Member schools offer different approaches, curricula and cultures, but have one important thing in common. “Our financial support doesn’t come from taxes or government allocations, but from tuition-paying families and charitable contributions,” Driver says. “This enables us to respond to, and incorporate, new ideas and programs, and to measure their effectiveness without jumping through government hoops.” ISSL schools are governed by a board of trustees, she adds. “Each school defines its own mission and designs a curriculum and sets academic standards consistent with that mission.”

ISSL schools participate in collaborative outreach efforts, including parental awareness events such as Secondary School Night Oct. 21 at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School. ISSL also offers development opportunities for faculty, administrators and trustees, such as workshops on topics like social development in children and innovative instruction strategies. “One of the most valuable things we do is to create forums for sharing ideas and effectively solving problems in an atmosphere of mutual respect,” Driver says. “And, as a convenience for parents, 12 of our schools use a common admission application and test, which saves time and money.” Parents invest in an independent education because of the advantages it gives their children, Driver says. “A recent study by the U.S. Department of Education shows that independent school students do more homework, read more and watch less TV than their public school counterparts, and a greater percentage participate in the arts, athletics and extracurricular activities,” she notes. And a good education is pivotal to success later in life. “Our alums enjoy a high acceptance rate to top-tier universities, and many go on to serve their communities and make an outstanding living in high-level jobs,” she says. “Our schools spark a lifelong enthusiasm for learning and help prepare your child for the future. And that’s the most important investment a parent can make.”

A SHARED LOVE OF JAYHAWKS BASKETBALL was the perfect starting point for University of Kansas graduates Bridget Walsh and Matt Koenig. Both moved to Denver after graduating and were rooting on their college team at a local bar when conversation led to making plans for a date. After four and a half years, Matt made it official. “It was just a normal Friday night,” Bridget recalls. “We left a restaurant, and Matt started walking toward a violinist on a street corner. I was so confused as to what he was doing, and then he got down on one knee and proposed right there.” Deciding where to get married was the first order of business, since Matt was born in Denver and Bridget is a native St. Louisan. “My whole family wanted me to get married in St. Louis, but I just couldn’t pass up Colorado because it’s such a gorgeous setting,” Bridget says. After many hours of online research, Bridget discovered the breathtaking Castle Cliff Estate in Sedalia, Colo., and knew it would be the ideal locale. The ceremony and cocktail hour were held out front, and dinner and dancing took place in the backyard’s three garden levels. Bridget wanted a neutral palette with metallic accents to create a romantic vibe for their big day. She fondly recalls one of her favorite memories, when a bagpiper played at the end of the ceremony—a surprise Matt planned in honor of her dad, who passed away when she was a teenager. “We are an Irish family, and my dad was very proud of that,” Bridget notes. “That moment was so special. It was the one detail I didn’t know about.” The couple resides in Denver, where Matt is a sales rep for Haynes Mechanical Systems and Bridget is a communications director for The Midland Group and a stylist/outfitter for Trumaker.

It can be cost-effective. Many all-inclusive properties have a free wedding package if you book a certain number of rooms. It can help eliminate family drama. Invite lists to destination weddings are generally smaller, so no need to fret about offending a co-worker or your mom’s second cousin. It can provide a more intimate setting. “The people who go are the people who matter the most, and couples can spend more time with guests than they would be able to at a conventional wedding,” says Boyle. Couples can go straight from their reception to their honeymoon.

BY THE NUMBERS Recent years have seen a rise in destination weddings, says Boyle, who has noticed an uptick of about 20 to 25 percent in the past five years. This is supported by data from The Knot’s 2013 Real Weddings and 2012 Destination Wedding studies. Almost a quarter of all weddings are destination weddings, with more than 350,000 destination weddings each year. Destination weddings have an average of 86 guests in attendance. The Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii are the most popular locales outside the continental U.S. This holds true for St. Louis couples,” Boyle says. “We book for Riveria Maya, Cancun and Jamaica, and we’re also currently working on weddings in St. Lucia and Turks & Caicos.” Nearly 70 percent of destination weddings are held outdoors. Flynn’s best-selling 2012 page-turner does not disappoint. Directed by David Fincher, of The Social Network and Fight Club fame, and adapted by Flynn herself, the film opens with the disappearance of Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) from her Missouri home on the morning of her fifth wedding anniversary. As the investigation unfolds, her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) looks increasingly guilty. Accompanied by a chilling soundtrack, the movie is atmospherically fun to watch, and it’s amusing to spot the Missouri references, which include Cardinals, Boulevard Brewing and Mizzou.

It does, however, have a few flaws. A little too slick and stylish for its own good, the story never dives beneath the surface of things, whether in major character development or in its skewering of tabloid news à la Nancy Grace. It does have something to say on gender politics and the utter unknowability of others, even someone as intimate as a spouse, but it merely skates the surface. Regardless, Affleck and Pike are both well-suited to their roles, as is the supporting cast, which includes Tyler Perry, Neil Patrick Harris and Carrie Coon. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Yes. —S.Z. IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN to this Mexican restaurant north of the U. City Loop, you owe it to yourself to go. The food is homestyle and authentic— nothing fancy, but solidly good—and plentiful. The place is family-run, approaching its ninth anniversary. Many servers speak Spanish-laced English, and although the menu has the usual Tex-Mex items— fajitas, tacos, nachos, chimichangas, burritos, chalupas, quesadillas and enchiladas—the flavors are just right. The salsa, for example, is on the smooth side and loaded with great taste and just the right amount of bite. The chips come hot and a little on the oily side—the best way to have them. Do not miss the Chicken Soup ($6.50), a massive bowl of delicious broth that is both salty and spicy, thanks to very finely diced jalapeno and pico de gallo (tomato, onion and cilantro). But the real

treat was its large chunks of chicken, generous amount of rice and the chopped half avocado. It was so good, I wonder why avocado isn’t served warm more often. Similarly scrumptious is the Shrimp Soup, brimming with crisp-cooked veggies—including squash, broccoli and cauliflower—and enough tender shrimp to make a meal. There’s also some avocado in there, but not as much as in the chicken version. The broth is flavorful, a little spicy and salty, and heavily laced with cilantro. El Plato Grande ($14.25) lives up to its name as a huge serving—nearly two dinners’ worth—of meat stacked next to refried beans, Spanish rice, sour cream, avocado salad and pico de gallo. The sides, all good, were the usual lineup of tasty Mexican accompaniments. But the meats included a very thin rib eye steak and a thinly pounded chicken breast—each pan-sauteed and delicious.

Camarones a la Diabla ($11) had an enormous number of shrimp in a thickish red sauce with some bite, but not too much, served with rice, beans and tortillas. The shrimp were nicely cooked to just barely done—the way to get maximum flavor out of them. Somewhat confusing is the assortment of guacamole sides, like the Guacamole Salad, served on shredded lettuce—not to be mistaken for Avocado Salad, which is a very flavorful blend of marinated onions, peppers, avocado and cilantro. Dessert of Flan ($2.75) was tasty and rich, an excellent close to a very satisfying meal. As you can tell, you get a lot of bang for your buck here. It’s the kind of place where you can order a side of refried beans or Spanish rice for $1.99—and have enough to serve two or three.

T&S TRIED IT [HYPNOSIS by patty hannum I HAVE A DIRTY LITTLE SECRET: I’m a nail biter. I also pick at my nails

and munch on my cuticles. It is gross and embarrassing. I may be 54 years old chronologically, but I have the nail biting habits of a 5-year-old. I have tried everything to stop. You know that gross-tasting stuff you paint on your nails to prevent you from biting? I developed a liking to the taste. Tips or gel manicures? Just more for me to pick off. Regular manicures? Waste of money. I’ve managed to stop smoking, drinking (assuming we count the times I was pregnant) and a variety of other habits, but I could never control this one. My last hope was hypnosis. I wanted to change the way my brain worked. My idea of hypnosis was totally based on what I saw on television. It included someone swinging an object in front of my eyes and saying, You are getting sleepy, very sleepy. At that point, I would fall into a trance and the hypnotist would be able to manipulate me into doing anything, right? Bark like dog? Sure. Commit a crime? Absolutely. Enjoy nature? Without a doubt! As you might suspect, what I learned about hypnosis from my television wasn’t exactly accurate. I made an appointment to see Joan Krueger, a certified hypnotherapist with an office in Kirkwood. She explained that hypnosis does not place people in a trance but in a relaxed state where their subconscious mind is susceptible to suggestions. Since you are awake during the process, you won’t do anything that challenges your moral compass or values. Joan and I spent some time discussing my nail biting, why and when I do it, and how I felt about it. It was a little bit like a therapy session but without the need to revisit my childhood or teenage angst. Joan then turned on some music and in a very soothing voice started talking to me. I cannot stress the soothing part. I really can’t remember what she said but it sounded so nice and calm. Now, I must admit that during this process, Bad Patty popped into my head. You know, the part of you that doesn’t really want to believe that something

is going to work. So even while Joan was talking to me, Bad Patty was thinking, This is bogus, I can hardly wait to get into the car and bite that hang nail right off. Do people really believe in this stuff? Once my session was over, I was totally relaxed but Bad Patty was still in my brain just waiting to get in the car for a little fingernail biting. As I pulled out of the parking lot and moved my hand toward my mouth, a thought popped into my head: That’s gross and disgusting. And down my hand went. I couldn’t do it. I stopped and got a manicure and assumed that once the polish started peeling, I would have at it. Not so. I just kept hearing the words ‘gross and disgusting,’ which was how I had described my habit to Joan. So does hypnosis work? It did for me, even with Bad Patty making an appearance. I am however, someone as my teachers use to say, who is “easily influenced by others,” which in this case is great because I have not bitten my nails in over a month.

by tony di martino You’ve chosen the perfect guy and the perfect dress, and vowed to avoid carbs until the moment you cut the cake. What else can you do in the months and weeks leading up to your wedding to make sure you look and feel your best on the big day?

Don’t believe people who say beauty comes from within. Radiant brides are the result of a consistent skin care regimen. Along with your usual cleansing and moisturizing routine, start using a retinoid at least three to six months before your wedding. If your skin is too sensitive for the prescription stuff, try an over-the-counter retinol lotion (Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair and Olay ProX Age Repair Lotion are good drugstore brands, and SkinCeuticals is an effective high-end choice), and use it one to three times a week. Give yourself plenty of time if you want to lose a little weight, at least six months before the big day. Whatever you do, don’t try to crash diet at the last minute. It saps your vitality, makes you crabby, and gives you ugly black circles under your eyes. Sign up for a yoga class at least three months before the big day. Not only will it make you more lithe and limber and improve your posture, but also the focus on rhythmic breathing will help keep you calm during this stressful time. Also, nothing coaxes tension from your muscles and joints like a good massage. No time for yoga class or massage? Practice mindful breathing: inhale for four counts, exhale for eight. Repeat until the urge to scream at your clueless wedding planner, maid of honor or future mother-in-law has passed. It’s all in the details. Brows shaggy? Have them professionally shaped—it’s worth it. Teeth looking dingy? Start using whitestrips, or visit your dentist for a professional hydrogen peroxide treatment. A flick of mascara and a quick coat of lip gloss probably won’t register in your wedding photos. On the other hand, you don’t want to look like a pole dancer. Start searching for a professional makeup artist a few months before the wedding. Local fashion or wedding photographers usually can recommend a pro, but don’t take anyone’s word for it. Make consultation appointments with several. Take pictures after each session, so you can compare and contrast their efforts. Go with the one who makes you look like your prettiest self. Planning on an elaborate updo for your wedding, or on a style, color or length that differs from what you usually wear? Book a trial run with your stylist several months before the wedding: this is not the time to leave anything to chance. Bring pictures of what you have in mind, and bring your veil and headpiece, if possible.

EVERY BRIDE wants to feel beautiful on her wedding day. But rather than scheduling a flurry of spa appointments the week before your wedding, experts advise planning ahead—way ahead—to slim down, perfect your skin and otherwise make this the most memorable and beautiful day of your life.

pre-wedding skin care Brides spend countless hours picking out their dream dress and other externals, forgetting that nothing is more important to their bridal look than their skin. But great skin is not something you can achieve overnight. You need to plan ahead and work with professionals.

Have a Plan It’s never too early to meet with an esthetician or dermatologist to discuss your concerns: large pores, uneven skin tone, acne or fine lines and wrinkles. Develop an individualized skin care regimen and allow time for facials, peels and other protocals that can replace that flawed outer layer of skin with the glowing complexion you want. According to Dr. Amy Miller, an aesthetic medicine specialist at St. Louis Skin Solutions, most regimens follow three basic steps: cleanse, correct and protect. For example, in the morning, use a gentle cleanser, an antioxidant to correct, and a sunscreen to protect. A similar night

Rather than spending a fortune at the drugstore or make-up counter, consult with a professional to identify the best products for you. “An at-home medical-grade skin routine can provide more vibrant and healthy-looking skin,” says Jackie Carr, R.N., an aesthetic nurse at Ophthalmic Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Inc. Acing Acne Carr says acne is not cured, but treated. “In many cases, there are simple tricks that can help reduce the severity and frequency of acne breakouts. If the patient

is suffering from mild to moderate acne, there are many topical products, cleaning techniques and in-office procedures that can be helpful over time,” she says. Depending on the severity of the acne, it could take from two months to a year to get under control, says Dr. Joe Muccini of Midamerica Skin, Health & Vitality Center. If you wake up with a pimple on the day of the wedding, Muccini says your best bet is make-up. “Don’t do anything aggressive like warm compresses, needles, etc.,” he warns. “Try to cover it up with make-up and tell your photographer so they can work around it.”

WRINKLES AND FINE LINES “Botox is a no-brainer for brides who want to smooth frown lines and have an overall brighter look,” Muccini says. He recommends Botox two weeks before the wedding to give it time to settle and to allow for touch ups if needed. Fillers are another option to plump thin lips, soften facial creases and treat wrinkles. “I really encourage patients to do fillers four to six weeks before their wedding because the procedure can cause bruising and swelling,” Muccini says. He also recommends Pellevé, a non-invasive radiofrequency device, to treat mild to moderate wrinkles.

FACIALS

Facials are a nice way to pamper yourself before the wedding and can improve your skin’s texture and overall tone, but Muccini says a single facial probably will not alter skin appearance. “I recommend making facials a part of your skin care regimen and starting four to six months before your wedding,” he says. “This will also give you the opportunity to establish a relationship with an esthetician.” Spa facials provide a deeper exfoliation and cleanse than is possible at home. They usually include a double cleanse with steam, exfoliation, extraction and mask. They may also include microdermabrasion and chemical peels, depending on your needs.

Conversely, it takes more treatments to treat African American skin.” According to Moore, facial hair is the treatment area most commonly requested by women. The bikini area, underarms and legs also are popular. For men, the back and shoulders, followed by the chest and abdomen are the most requested treatment areas. Moore says he will treat any area except the space between the eyebrows, which presents a risk to the eye. EASY AS PIE “The newest lasers are highly effective and, unlike previous generations of lasers, are not painful,” says Moore. “Pricing also has come down dramatically.” Additional benefits of laser hair removal, according to WebMD, include the precision of the lasers (targeting dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged) and speed of treatment (lasers can treat an area approximately the size of a quarter every second).

PLAN AHEAD The most common mistake made by brides is not starting treatments early enough. “On average, it takes six to eight treatments over a period of six to 12 months to achieve optimal results,” Gurley says, because hair grows in cycles, transitioning from the active growth cycle (anagen) into the resting phase and then shedding (telogen cycle). Removal most effectively targets the hair follicles that are in the active phase. Even after a complete series of treatments, patients can expect to see some regrowth. “Laser hair removal is better described as permanent hair reduction, because a majority of patients still will have occasional growth here or there. Touch-up treatments are recommended if you are experiencing regrowth,” Gurley says. Fortunately, the hair that does grow back is typically finer and lighter than before. DO YOUR HOMEWORK Choose a medical spa or facility that employs a dedicated laser specifically for hair removal. “The 805- and 810-nm diode lasers are the best out there for hair removal,” Moore says. And avoid waxing, he says, which pulls out the follicle, at least six weeks before your treatment and in between treatments. Also avoid tanning, which will lessen the contrast between your skin and hair, making it harder for the laser to target follicles.

KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT Laser hair removal feels like a light rubber band snap. The newer lasers cool the skin before and after each pulsation to minimize discomfort. For a day or two after, the treated area might look and feel like it is sunburnt. Your treated hair will fall out over the next month or so. Initially, treatments can be scheduled every four to six weeks, Moore says. After roughly four treatments, you can spread treatments out to every eight to 10 weeks.

An independent interior designer for 31 years, she started in the basement and worked her way up to the third floor, decorating and ‘fixing up’ along the way during the 17 years she has resided there. Her daughter lives on the same street, and Ruppert describes the area as a family neighborhood. Construction began on the house in 1926, and everything is original except the kitchen. Ruppert is a proponent of reusing and repurposing in her projects. “About nine years ago, I totally gutted the kitchen and took out a couple of rooms to make it bigger,” she says. “I installed windows, two new french doors and nine large pieces of molding. I personally did all the work myself.” Another massive undertaking Ruppert did on her own was the backyard. She planted 750 boxwood shrubs and even dug the fountain, placing the motor under the garage so the noise wouldn’t disturb her. Her two favorite areas of the home are the kitchen and an expansive patio in the back, where she goes every morning to relax. “The huge, 80-foot patio used to be accessible only from the living and dining rooms, but I added an adjoining patio so I could get to it from my kitchen,” she explains. “It’s a very peaceful place. The slate tiles are original to the home, so I lifted them all for cleaning and relaid them.” In keeping with her ‘restore rather than renovate’ logic, she redid all the original hinges and knobs and removed every door to strip them of their 80-year-old paint. While nothing was a quick process (stripping and repainting the exterior took a year), Ruppert says every decision was worth it. “It’s been an experience,” she says. “I just love beautiful things, and that’s PHOTOS: STEVEN B. My husband and I bought this home four years ago. I wouldn’t even have walked in, based on what the front looked like; however, the interior and backyard have everything we need. To begin with, I think your house looks pretty good. You have chosen a classic Tudor color scheme, and your foundation plants are properly scaled and grow together to create a continuous, flowing presentation. The improvements need to happen in the details. As with most ‘period’ houses built after the ’40s, the historic details that would give your home character need strengthening. First, all of the wooden, half-timbered trim on the second floor needs to be much wider to feel authentic. Also, as you point out, the porch columns are not visually up to the task and need to be wider as well. Next, I would install a new roof with more color, variegation and texture, as well as a new stained-wood front door with hammered metal hinges and Tudor details. The final changes are seen in the fences to either side of the house. By introducing brick piers and wood fencing stained to match the half-timbers, the fences become part of the architecture and add supporting details that enhance the Tudor feel. The landscaping is basically fine, but I show trimming the lower branches of the shade trees to open up the view and adding some window boxes. The house now has the charm you sensed was missing.
