[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] Last month the news business celebrated a big event: the golden anniversary of the 30-minute news broadcast. Prior to Sept. 2, 1963, the evening news was only 15 minutes long. Hard to believe, now that we have access to the news (or what passes for it) 24/7. Theoretically, this advancement should have resulted in more news, and more in-depth news. But as someone who routinely watches the network news (as well as the more serious BBC), I haven’t found that to be the case. When I tune into the ABC morning news at 6 a.m., I sometimes get the feeling those anchors just haven’t had their coffee yet—otherwise, how could they report straight-faced on things like new menu items at fast food restaurants? We’ve been hearing for days about the new SatisFries at Burger King (an update just today told of imminent free samples. Stay tuned). And on NBC, the business reporter, broadcasting live from the New York Stock Exchange, felt the need to describe in great detail Jack in the Box’s new Grilled Cheese Burger Munchie Meal. This just in from all three network news channels: McDonald’s will be offering healthy options in its Value Meals—to take widespread effect by 2020—and Hershey’s has launched a new candy called Lancaster Caramels. Now that’s something every American needs to know. In this era of reality TV, when viewers laugh at people onscreen for failing physical challenges and weep over their rejection by lovers they’ve known for about 10 seconds, maybe my expectations of the news are just too high.

COVER STORY

FORSYTH] SCHOOL

by tony di martino

IT’S NO ACCIDENT THAT CHILDREN FEEL SO AT HOME at Forsyth School. As one alum puts it, “Someone is always there for you, inspiring you to do your best and aim high. I always felt so secure and comfortable.” But that’s not the only reason students feel a strong sense of belonging. “Our campus is unique because there’s no school building, as such,” says head of school Mike Vachow. “Most classes are conducted in renovated houses from the 1920s and ’30s. There’s a cozy, storybook feeling to the place. The kids love it. It’s as if they have their very own village.” But even storybook villages need to change with the times. Through the years, Forsyth’s historic houses have been augmented with athletic and performing arts facilities, science labs and additional classroom space. Two years ago, the school bought land from neighboring St. Louis Hillel at Washington University, and in 2012, the school acquired its sixth historic house, built in 1929 and located on Wydown Boulevard. The latest round of renovations is now complete. “Our fifth graders, who used to share space with the fourth graders, now attend classes in Next House, the newly remodeled home on Wydown,” Vachow says. “Our fourth graders also have an entire renovated house to themselves, and the Hillel property is now a playground.” The improvements, which prospective parents can view Sunday, Nov. 3, at the school’s open house, add nearly an acre to the campus and increase classroom space by 6,500 square feet. More renovations are scheduled for 2014. “Next summer, we’ll renovate Fillmore House, the school’s original building, expanding FORSYTH SCHOOL’S NEWLY EXPANDED CAMPUS classroom space for our pre-kindergarten and IMAGE COURTESY OF FORSYTH SCHOOL kindergarten students and renovating the lower-school science lab,” Vachow says. “We’re also building group learning spaces in each house and reconfiguring the school’s entry and reception areas.” The updates are made possible by the school’s Expanding Our Opportunities Capital Campaign, co-chaired by Robert Klahr and Jennifer Demoff. The focus of the campaign, which kicked off last fall and has raised more than $3 million so far, is threefold: “Beyond the brick and mortar additions, we also want to build our endowment to meet the school’s long-term needs, and to reconnect with our alumni and past parents,” Vachow explains. “Thanks to the campaign, our faculty development, financial aid and artist-in-resident programs are now fully endowed.” Established in 1961, Forsyth School is known for its challenging yet engaging curriculum, inspiring learning techniques and a wide range of extracurricular activities. “We strive to provide kids from pre-kindergarten through grade six with authentic challenges, but we also offer a supportive environment that gives them every opportunity for success,” Vachow says. “They discover they can do more than they ever thought they could. By the time they leave our little village, they’re ready for secondary school and beyond—and they’ve developed confidence, a sense of responsibility and a love of learning they’ll carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

THE VELVET

HAMMER by joan berkman Q: BECAUSE I HAVE A HIGH-PITCHED VOICE, I DON’T FEEL I COMMAND ENOUGH RESPECT AT THE OFFICE. ANYTHING I CAN DO TO MAKE MY VOICE SOUND MORE PROFESSIONAL? ——Need vocal coaching in CWE A: My mother, Eleanor Berkman, who for many years taught theater and voice, used to demonstrate how many of us ‘force our vocalization,’ resulting in a high, squeaky tone of voice. The primary reason for this is we don’t properly regulate our breathing as we speak. Unless you suffer from a condition preventing you from doing vocal exercises, here’s a technique my mother used to teach her students to help improve tone of voice and lower the pitch. If my mother were with us today, she would advise, first and foremost, to maintain good posture; slouching tends to restrict the natural, free flow of air into and out of our lungs (essential for good breath control). Then, after taking in a full breath of air, slowly exhale and count out loud to 10 while trying to maintain an even tone of voice (see if you can reach 10 before running out of breath). Practice this exercise daily, especially before a meeting or presentation, to keep you mindful of your tone of voice as you speak; it can also help you feel more relaxed. Another tip: Try rehearsing a speech using a voice recorder. It will enable you to practice and analyze your speaking voice in private and provide crucial feedback to help you maintain a consistent voice quality. With time and practice, others should hear from you a more resonant, professional-sounding tone of voice. Q: A CO-WORKER HAS A HABIT OF STANDING TOO CLOSE WHEN WE MEET TO TALK; HE SEEMS UNAWARE THAT HE’S ENCROACHING ON MY PERSONAL SPACE. WHAT CAN I SAY OR DO TO KEEP HIM AT ARM’S LENGTH WITHOUT MAKING HIM FEEL SELF-CONSCIOUS OR HURTING HIS FEELINGS? ——Too close for comfort in University City A: We’ve all suffered ‘space invaders’ at one time or another. Most of us normally gauge the invisible, personal space of others and automatically maintain a respectable distance—especially when speaking face to face; this facility may be hardwired into our DNA (but, apparently, not in everybody’s). A couple of subtle ways to put more space between you and your associate the next time you’re together: If there are chairs nearby, invite your colleague to sit down with you to talk. Otherwise, casually take a step back or to the side and say, “Please excuse me, but I feel I can better communicate with you if we both stand a little farther apart.” This shifts the responsibility for the situation onto your shoulders, thereby saving your coworker any embarrassment. Purposefully creating extra space should help you feel more comfortable the next time you have a ‘close encounter.’ IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION FOR JOAN, SEND IT TO BUSINESS@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM. TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.

If you’re on the hunt for silly paintings of dogs playing poker, American Kennel Club’s Museum of the Dog in Ballwin won’t be for you. Located in Queeny Park, this unique AKC attraction bills itself as “home to the world’s finest collection of art devoted to the dog.” Last weekend, the new pug exhibit opened with a wine and dessert reception … for two-legged guests. (Anyone who’s loved a pug knows that the bug-eyed breed isn’t ‘so ugly it’s cute’—pugs are just pretty doggone cute! ‘Pug-ugly’ is a term of endearment.) The Duke and Duchess of Windsor kept pugs, but certainly not for their hunting prowess. ‘A Regal Pedigree: A Special Exhibition of the Pug in Art’ runs through Dec. 8. This Sunday (Oct. 20), is the 21st annual Pug Party hosted by St. Louis Pug Rescue. Paintings, photographs— even a particularly precious Prussian pug porcelain—will be on display; the circa 1900 Meissen piece is German. Meanwhile, an exhibit on herding dogs continues through Sunday. One may sniff out this Fido-friendly facility (attending dogs must be obedience-trained and leashed) at 1721 S. Mason Road; it’s open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The eye-catching fountains and landscape architecture just south of the Interstate 64 bridge over Brentwood Boulevard tout Brentwood as the ‘City of Warmth.’ Very soon, they’d be able to add the word ‘hospitality’ along the rock wall. A stone’s throw away, construction continues on the Drury Hotel on Eager Road. The eight-story, 210-room, $35 million hotel is slated for completion next spring. The site long has been coveted by developers, but (most recently) the I-170/I-64 interchange construction kept any potential projects from realization. The nearly vacant lot at Brentwood Boulevard and Eager Road had been a staging area for MoDOT construction vehicles and construction materials (a bridal shop was the last, lonely holdout on the southwestern edge). Drury’s plans include a restaurant

OF THE

in a separate building. Once known for its dearth of lodging choices, the mid-county area south of Clayton will soon have two: There’s a Hilton Homewood Suites on Clayton Road northeast of the Galleria. Ahhh, progress along major arteries; just like when the railroad came through town. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many people mark the observance by wearing pink. Some at least sport pink pins in the distinctive looped shape to support survivors, or in the memory of loved ones who lost their battles. Area-wide, many firefighters do so with pink shirts for their national fundraising effort, ‘Pink Heals.’ But, for a while this month, the Monarch Fire District board was having none of it. The district covers communities from Chesterfield and Wildwood to Creve Coeur, and had suffered accusations of mismanagement until the board’s makeup changed with April’s election. Although firefighters had purchased and were already wearing the pink shirts, several board members still had a fit of pique: they had not been consulted. Firefighters, whose lives are on the line every day as professional do-gooders, have collected thousands of dollars in the last four years of this special effort. The T-shirt design cleverly incorporates the logo as first letter in the word ‘Pink.’ ‘P’ is also the first letter of ‘politicize.’ The iconic neon sign for Spencer’s Grill (‘Park in Rear’) has been hanging out

front of the former grocery store facing Kirkwood Road (Lindbergh Boulevard) since the thoroughfare was known as U.S. Route 66. It’s been Kirkwood’s diner since 1947. At one time or another, the joint might have been called a ‘greasy spoon.’ But within the past year it’s been renovated, with new red stools and grey booths. And the fare is plenty fine. I ventured to have its version of scrapple: sausage mixed with grits, slathered in pancake batter and grilled, then topped with sausage gravy. I will not go into the way scrapple is made in Pennsylvania Dutch country, with all sorts of pig parts. At many hours of a morning, it’s hard to get a booth in front or from among the few tables in the tiny back room, but there’s almost always a spot at the counter. I’ll have to go back for lunch, as townies rave about the classic burgers and fries that make this a truly vintage lunch counter. A bit more lore from the past century: During the lunch-counter protests of the Civil Rights movement, blacks were refused service in many areas of the country, including St. Louis. So, in a ruse, whites would sit next to them, order, be served, and simply pass the plate to their neighbor. This non-violent approach worked most everywhere, but old man Spencer sure didn’t like it. Spencer’s Grill was one of the last segregation holdouts in the St. Louis area. Spencer’s Grill is mentioned on websites dedicated to ‘The Mother Road,’ Route 66, the nation’s first paved ‘interstate’ highway. It’s a few blocks south of the train station, 223

KIRKWOOD

S. Kirkwood Road at Monroe Avenue. Both sides of the clock outside on the neon sign were working just fine last we checked. From time to time in years past, it’s only been right twice a day. Mike Johnson has gone out on a limb: the owner of Sugarfire Smoke House in Olivette is offering free lunches to furloughed government workers. Let’s hope the gambit has come to a close by the time you read this, since even a successful restaurateur might have trouble dishing out three dozen free sandwiches a day (the number given out during one recent lunchtime). Idled federal employees can have a free lunch on Johnson until the shutdown is over and they can get back to business. As for Johnson, he jokes that he’s opened and closed more restaurants than he can count, and says there’s plenty to go around. It’s just his way of giving back, he says. We couldn’t be prouder of Forest Park; many of our area’s finest cultural institutions are there, from the art museum to the science center to the zoo and the MUNY. Remnants of the legendary 1904 World’s Fair (officially the Louisiana Purchase Exposition) have been restored, and a map of what was once where can be enjoyed at the history museum. It’s hard to be humble when the park’s magnificence is acknowledged by so many others, this time the American Planning Association, which has honored Forest Park as one of 10 Great Places for 2013 under its Great Places in America program. APA singled out the “heart” and “crown jewel of St. Louis” for its enduring design, myriad cultural institutions, amenities and 137-year history. The Park, which attracts some 13 million visitors annually, completed a $100 million restoration within the last decade. At 1,371 acres, it is the nation’s seventh-largest urban park, more than 500 acres larger than Central Park in NYC. Also for 2013, Grand Central Terminal in the Big Apple was among the 10 great spaces, which ranged from

Although it may handle only a small percentage of travelers compared to Grand Central, its overall awesomeness cannot be denied.) In 2010, APA tipped its hat to Clayton’s Wydown Boulevard as one of the nation’s

10 Great Streets; in 2011, Washington Avenue downtown got the nod. Great Places, Neighborhoods and Streets are selected annually for “having a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement, and a vision for tomorrow” by APA, which has offices in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Most folks can’t wait to get out of the hospital. This fellow—a ‘knucklehead,’ one might say—apparently can’t wait to get in, using an assumed name and going so far as to allow a nurse to insert an intravenous needle into his arm. Town & Country cops, who have released surveillance video of the suspect from his visit last month to Missouri Baptist Medical Center, say the convoluted ruse apparently netted the crook iGoodies that can be converted to cash on the street: another patient’s iPhone and iPod. Authorities suspect the same person for similar incidents at other area hospitals. Observers wonder whether he may actually be after drugs; on other occasions he has taken or tried to take anything of value within reach before leaving the facility. Following the surprising move by Webster Groves city officials

nixing Webster University’s plan to move some operations to the vacant Luhr Library at Eden Theological Seminary: The city has temporarily stopped issuing building and zoning permits to Webster and “other educational institutions” in the city. City officials say the move is to allow the Department of Planning and Development time to consider whether the city’s zoning ordinance needs to be changed re: land-use strategy for major educational campuses. (Read: Webster University.) It goes without saying that the suspension cannot be applied retroactively. Meanwhile, the university and seminary have filed suit against the city. Eden sold about 5 acres to Webster awhile back, but the city last month voted against a conditional-use permit for the university. Residential neighbors have breathed at least one sigh of relief … but they know better than to hold their breaths.

ABOUT THE CLUB The Page Turners’ origin story is a familiar one: a group of literature-enthused women needed a night out. But what sets this book club apart is a personal connection to Curtis Sittenfeld, best-selling author of Prep and American Wife. Book club member Lizzie Berman knew Sittenfeld through their children’s music class and invited the author to attend the meeting when the group discussed Sisterland, her latest novel. “The ability to discuss a book with the author was so exciting,” Berman says. “We found that we were reading things in that she hadn’t really intended. And Sisterland had just been published, so this was really the first opportunity for Curtis to hear what people thought of the story and the characters.”

The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) invites you to a get-to-know-us event where you will explore peer learning courses for senior adults. The event will feature an overall orientation followed by three sample classes and is open to seniors 55 and older. -

Refreshments will be served .

Friday November 15

ABOUT THE BOOK Sisterland explores familial bonds through the story of psychic twin sisters Kate and Violet. An earthquake strikes St. Louis, and Violet receives national recognition and scrutiny after publicly predicting that a much larger one is on its way. Kate, who has tried to ignore her psychic abilities in order to live a quiet life as a wife and mother, is drawn into the controversy. Scenes from the sisters’ past are interwoven into present-day events, revealing a complex relationship between the women.

1:00–3:00 p.m. Doors open at 12:45pm

[ opinions ]

>> I was so intrigued by the characters in Sisterland. My opinions of each changed dramatically from the start to the finish. And hearing from Curtis about how she had written the characters really made the whole story come to life. – MARISSA ROSEN

>> Sisterland was a nice look at the reality of being a stay-at-home mom. The St. Louis references were fun to read, and I couldn’t put the book down for the last 100 pages. – LONI SCHNITZER

>> I loved this book. Not only does Sisterland have wonderful dialogue and an interesting plot, but it was also fun to read as a St. Louis mom. Recognizing locations was just part of the fun, though. Curtis captured the minutiae of parenting and the sweet vulnerability all moms feel. – KERI SIMON

COVER STORY

VISITATION] ACADEMY

by tony di martino

FOR MOST YOUNG WOMEN, high school is a time of great growth and discovery, filled with new friends and experiences. But it’s also a time of self-doubt, rapid change, and intense social and academic competition. Luckily, students at Visitation Academy don’t have to face these pressures alone. “We offer a comprehensive approach to counseling that encourages young women to feel good about themselves for the unique person they are, not in comparison to others,” says upper-school counselor Adele Hayes, who works with girls in grades 10 through 12. “Over a three-year period, we develop strong relationships with each student and her family. We get to know the whole person, not just their grades and test scores.” Personal attention and a strong sense of community are hallmarks of the Visitation experience, Hayes notes. This individualized, holistic approach is especially helpful when it’s time to start looking at colleges. “Choosing and getting into the most appropriate school is more stressful now than ever before,” she says. “A college education, even from a prestigious school, is no guarantee of success in today’s job market—and these kids know it. Facing an uncertain future, they need all the support they can get. That’s why we’re here.” Visitation’s counseling team avoids a cookie-cutter approach to finding the best school for each student. “Our mantra is: College is not a prize to be won; it’s a match to be made,” Hayes says. “Each student is unique, and we help every girl realize her potential.” A rah-rah, Big 10 school might be perfect for some; others might feel completely lost in such an environment. And an Ivy League school might be all wrong for even the most brilliant, talented student if she doesn’t thrive on competition. “Junior year, we work with students to identify which environments are best for their interests, aspirations, life goals and strengths,” Hayes says. “We help them explore and narrow down their options, and figure out if they have the qualifications for their desired schools. Senior year, we start applying.” Counselors work in tandem with a team of advisers, classroom teachers who have received specialized training to help students during the application process. “We meet at least once a week in small groups, and, as senior year progresses, one-on-one meetings increase,” says math teacher and adviser Bob Cogan. “It’s the student’s responsibility to do the research and make the deadlines, but we keep them on track, write and facilitate recommendation letters, and provide ongoing assistance.” Some students know exactly where they want to go. Others don’t have a clue. “Either way, we’re here to help them discover their interests and passions and to encourage self-awareness and self-acceptance,” Hayes says. “Because, when you get right down to it, the most important question to ask when choosing a college is, Who am I, and what’s the best place for me to explore where that might take me?” VISITATION ACADEMY, LOCATED AT 3020 N. BALLAS ROAD, IS A PRIVATE CATHOLIC SCHOOL FOR TODDLERS THROUGH GRADE 12. THE SCHOOL HOLDS AN OPEN HOUSE NOV. 3. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CALL 314.625.9103 OR VISIT VISITATIONACADEMY.ORG. TOWN TALK

[ NOSTALGIA ] LUCKY LANE PRESCHOOL by judy goodman SIXTY YEARS AGO, WHEN LUCKY LANE NURSERY SCHOOL opened its doors, preschool was a very different thing. Most moms didn’t work, most kids played with children just like themselves, and ‘child development’ was not yet a household word. That’s why the small, diverse preschool in West County occupies a special niche in town. Even when it opened, Lucky Lane was progressive, seeking to encourage development in a socially diverse setting. At that time, most preschools were religious-based. As an independent, nonprofit school, Lucky Lane early on earned a reputation for quality early educational programming for all kids prior to the start of ‘real school.’ “The school prepared my three children educationally, but perhaps more importantly, it prepared them to be positive, successoriented people,” says Melanie Litz, who worked there for 10 years as a librarian and a teacher. “I always kept in mind that this was a young parent’s first experience without total control of their child, and I approached that huge step with respect, humor and great affection. Today, I see families around town who stop me to share their happy memories.” Serving toddlers through pre-kindergarten, the school’s basic philosophy emphasizes the needs of each individual child at each stage of growth. The teachers are experienced and up-to-date on all of the current trends in early childhood education. “The non-denominational environment was a priority,” adds Suzanne Bierman, a teacher who worked there for 29 years. “My classroom was PHOTO COURTESY OF LUCKY LANE like the United Nations, and parents trusted us to respect their wishes and traditions.” Unlike the general population, which had not yet migrated west, Lucky Lane was always located in West County. It began in 1951 as Ladue Nursery School Association. Then in 1956, it became Lucky Lane Nursery School, thanks to leadership from Margie Wolcott May and Lisa Iglauer and a donation of land by Isadore E. Millstone and his wife, Goldie. This was about the same time that Millstone gifted land to the Jewish Community Center. The population west of Lindbergh was fairly sparse in those days, but he had a vision. Lucky Lane has benefited from its wooded, open campus, where the kids can play and hike. In addition to a name chage that year, 1956 also saw the school launching Lucky Fair summer camp for children ages 3 through 5 and Lucky Day camp for children up to age 12. Today, Lucky Lane still offers a six-week summer program for kids. Extended hours are now available to parents, as well as a nutritious meal and various specialty classes. After all, today’s moms often work outside the home and preschool is no longer the exception or a choice for progressive families. But Lucky Lane retains its place as a local pioneer in its field. JR. KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SIXTH GRADE Enrolling Through September 1st Birthdays

888 N. Mason Road | Creve Coeur | 63141 AndrewsAcademy.com

TEN-YEAR-OLD Fae stormed angrily into her house after the first day of fifth grade and immediately went to her bedroom. After letting her cool off her parents asked what was wrong. Her response floored them: “I hate Mrs. Bias, she’s mean!” Fae explained that her teacher was already picking on the city kids in her class. Being sensitive, Fae could tell that the teacher’s attitude was more disrespectful and short-tempered with the kids from outside the district. One of Fae’s best friends was from the city, and it hurt to see her yelled at for no reason. And therein lies the dilemma for many parents: When to intercede on a child’s behalf when there are problems with a teacher. In general, my advice is for the student to take as much of the lead as possible. I would recommend that Fae set up a time before or after school to talk with Mrs. Bias to state her concerns and resolve her conflict. Many times the child wants a parent there for backing, but the student should do the talking, with the parent in the background mostly for moral support. And usually, it becomes a tremendous learning experience that empowers the child. They learn that they can have a voice, and if things aren’t going well in their world, they have the ability to change that. Even if things don’t change much, they’ll still feel better. Instead of feeling like a powerless victim, they will have taken some action and feel more potent and influential, and this will carry over to other aspects of their lives and relationships. So whether it is unhappiness over grades, disrespectful and unfair treatment or class rules, encourage your kids to try to handle it with the teacher directly. If the teacher, in your eyes, is being unfair or disrespectful, and is not willing to listen or change, then it’s time for you to talk to the teacher, hear their side and try to work things out. If you are still unhappy with the teacher’s behavior or attitude, then go up the ladder of command by talking to the principal, and finally the district office. It’s unusual, in my experience, for teachers not to be open to listening to their students and handling issues. If your child complains about being teased or bullied, I’d listen until they feel heard and understood, and then I’d problem-solve with them to come up with new solutions and actions for them to take. If nothing changes, encourage the child to talk to the teacher to get support in working things out with classmates. And if the bullying persists, that’s when I would call the teacher and relate what you are hearing at home. Sometimes kids don’t tell their parents the whole story. On the other hand, many times teachers aren’t aware of teasing and relationship aggression behaviors because it doesn’t happen out in the open. They rely on parents to give them a heads-up on what students are experiencing.

COVER STORY

CEDAR CREEK]

by rebecca koenig WITH ELECTRONIC DISTRACTIONS always within easy reach, quality family time can be hard to come by. Not even weddings, reunions or other celebrations are safe from the intrusions of emails and deadlines. Cedar Creek Conference Center hopes to change that. The 200-acre resort, 90 minutes west of downtown St. Louis, is a rural retreat ideal for special family occasions of all kinds. “When you’re out here, it’s so relaxed, and you can just enjoy each other,” says Jennifer Budwalda, meetings and events manager. Opened to the public in 1978, Cedar Creek is a family-owned resort and conference center in New Haven, Mo. Guests stay in the 37-room Cedar Lodge or in one of the property’s private houses. Buffet meals are included for groups, and the resort’s Town Hall bar and grill is open Saturdays and Sundays, as well. “Everything is made from scratch, even the bread on the sandwiches,” says sales manager Jeni Grunzinger. And Cedar Creek offers some unique attractions, such as its Western Town, a recreated Hollywood movie set with a saloon and covered wagon, and 2nd Shift Brewery, whose award-winning beers are served on site. Family-friendly features make Cedar Creek a fun place for reunions. The tennis court, ninehole golf course, saltwater swimming pool, and fishing lake appeal to kids and adults alike, and provide opportunities for intergenerational bonding. Budwalda has helped families organize lawn game ‘Olympics’ competitions. “What we find with family reunions is they can park their cars and just spend time here,” she says. “They don’t have to jump in a car to run to do this activity or that activity.” Getaways are customizable, and may include outings to nearby wineries, afternoons at the low ropes course or evenings spent around a bonfire. “We’re out in the country, yet we’re not far away from everything else,” Budwalda says. “There are 200 acres of endless possibilities.” This can be a refreshing alternative for couples planning weddings. Many venues have narrow guidelines about what can be done where, but Cedar Creek offers plenty of flexibility. Ceremonies and receptions can be staged almost anywhere on the property, and staff members are happy to work with outside wedding planners. “When you’re doing events, there’s tons of parts and pieces, and I think that’s why having a staff that’s so accommodating is a huge selling feature out here,” Grunzinger says. “Everyone can do what needs to be done.” Cedar Creek also functions as a bed-and-breakfast for smaller groups in town for winery tours, art festivals and hot air balloon races. Sometimes, a romantic weekend escape to the resort blossoms into something more. Two years ago, a Kansas City couple (pictured) touring the countryside enjoyed an afternoon in a Cedar Creek hammock. They decided that day to get married—and to come back to Cedar Creek for the occasion. With the whole property rented for their family and friends, they were wed Sept. 28. I D❤! ANITA LEIFHEIT & JORDAN BERGER] by stephanie zeilenga | photos by joel marion photography

5 | 12 | 2013

WHITFIELD ALUMNUS Jordan Berger wed Anita Leifheit, from Czestochowa, Poland, on May 12 at the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Japanese Garden. Jordan first saw Anita working at Erker’s Fine Eyewear in 2010 and asked a co-worker for her number. Anita, who came to the U.S. at age 18 for school, had planned eventually to settle closer to home, but her plans changed when she met and fell in love with Jordan. “The proposal happened on New Year’s Eve in 2012,” Anita says. “We went to dinner and out dancing. I wasn’t expecting it at all.” The couple tied the knot in a Jewish ceremony, which Jordan’s mother, Faith Berger, helped plan. They were surrounded by loved ones, including some of Anita’s family and friends from Poland. “It was very traditional,” Anita says. “We had a birch chuppah adorned with white orchids and I walked around him seven times.” Anita, who is Catholic, was happy to celebrate her new husband’s heritage. “She was accepting and open to doing the traditional things for my religion,” Jordan says. “She loves my family, and they love her.” An elegant reception followed at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel. Guests dined on beef tenderloin and seared halibut at tables decorated with white French tulips. Charles Glenn, who sings the national anthem at Blues games, provided live music. “Jordan is a huge Blues fan so Charles Glenn was a must,” Anita says. “I also surprised him with a Blues groom’s cake that was chocolate with raspberry filling.” Anita, an associate at Erker’s Fine Eyewear, and Jordan, an independent insurance contractor with Rabco Agency, live in University City.

DIAMONDS

the diamond’s reflected color; also known as dispersion

ROUND

Also known as brilliants, round-cut diamonds are a classic choice and make up the majority of diamonds sold. With 58 facets, these diamonds usually have more sparkle than other cuts. MARQUISE

This is a variation on the round cut, but is an oval with pointed ends. It contains 56 facets. PRINCESS

The princess-cut diamond is the second most popular shape and is square or rectangular. Although princess cuts can range from 50 to 144 facets, the standard is 76, which gives a lot of brilliance and fire . EMERALD

An emerald-cut diamond is rectangular, with cropped corners and 58 facets. These tend to have less brilliance because their facets are elongated. RADIANT

Radiant-cut diamonds are rectangular or square stones with angled corners. This cut is similar to an emerald-cut diamond, but its 62 to 70 facets give it more brilliance. PEAR

Pear-shaped diamonds are a variation on round-cuts, but in the shape of a teardrop. They typically contain 58 facets. OVAL

The oval-cut is an elongated version of the round diamond, with 56 facets. This shape recently has grown in popularity for engagement rings. VI

Asscher-cut diamonds are a modification on the emerald cut, but are square rather than rectangular. Their 74 facets give them more light and fire than the emerald cut. CUSHION

The cushion-cut diamond, also known as a pillow cut, is a square or rectangular stone with rounded corners and 57 facets. It is often used in antique settings. HEART

BRIGHT LIPS, NO-FUSS MAKEUP

and neutral nails ruled the runways during New York Fashion Week’s spring 2014 shows. And while it may seem like an eternity away, it’s never too early to get a head start on next season’s best beauty trends.

[ no-fuss face ]

Forget heavy liners and overly contoured cheeks. SUNO and Wes Gordon perfected low-maintenance makeup, thanks to makeup artist Alice Lane and her use of barely-there products. Maybelline’s Baby Lip Lip Balm in Quenched covered models’ eyelids, creating a luminous glow, while Wes Gordon’s girls topped off their fresh faces with subtle, sheer, bronzed eye shadow. Effortless and easy, it won’t be long before you’re a master of this clean and classic look.

[ neutral nails ]

It’s no secret the ’90s are back; that couldn’t have been more evident in Alexander Wang’s minimal approach to makeup. But when it came to nails, Wang stuck with his signature minimalism enhanced with a touch of texture. Combining Essie Sand Tropez and Matte About You top coat created a chalk-like effect on the models’ sandy-toned nails. Simple and original, this ‘chalking’ technique can be done with any color, updating your usual spring manicure.

[ tangerine touch ]

Lips escaped the no-fuss philosophy at NYFW thanks to nearly-neon orange lips owning the runway at DKNY. Vivid shades of orange stole the show with makeup artist Charlotte Willer using nothing but Maybelline New York’s Color Sensational Vivids Lipcolor in Electric Orange. A fresh face was the perfect backdrop for a bold pop of color, and from runway to reality, this look is easy to pull off. Whether you go for a glossy effect or matte your color, anything goes with this colorful trend.

[ undone and understated ]

Relaxed sophistication was the name of the game from Michael Kors to Proenza Schouler. Taking a more extreme approach, Proenza Schouler models rocked untrimmed and unstyled locks, while Michael Kors models went with a slightly more styled and curled look. Just a touch of Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Conditioner, post blow dry, was added at Proenza Schouler; it’s a product professionals and amateurs alike can use with little frustration.

Updos took a messy turn at Rachel Zoe, Reed Krakoff and Rodarte. From nearly-frizzy braids to simple and classic ponytails, there were two elements that remained consistent throughout each show: long and low. Want a low, knotted Rodarte pony? All you need is a single-barrel curling iron, dry hair and a deep part to achieve a sleek but slightly undone Rodarte ’do. Remember, when it comes to hair and makeup this spring, the simpler, the better.

OSTEO HEALTH] [ SPECIAL SECTION

Back Pain – Newer, safer techniques for faster healing.

COVER STORY

SLUCARE]

by tony di martino BACK PAIN is one of the most common medical problems, tormenting eight out of 10 people at some point during their lives. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, it accounts for 13 million doctor visits each year—and more than 2 million sick days per month. Most back pain eventually goes away on its own. But in some cases, the pain is a symptom of degenerative disc disease (DDD), a condition caused by injury, congenital birth defects or the wear and tear of aging. About 20 percent of individuals with DDD experience such severe pain they eventually need surgery. Thanks to technology, there’s now a minimally invasive procedure that effectively treats DDD. Recently, a surgeon who pioneered the method joined SLUCare, the physicians of Saint Louis University. “In the last seven years, I’ve performed more than 1,000 successful procedures in patients ages 15 to 90, with excellent outcomes and no significant complications,” says Dr. Dennis Mollman, director of spine surgery at Saint Louis University. “It’s the safest, most precise technique available today.” DDD occurs when discs break down and lose elasticity, reducing their function as the spine’s shock absorbers and causing the space between vertebrae to shrink, explains Mollman, who came to SLU Hospital from St. Luke’s in Kansas City, Mo. “This can result in debilitating back, leg, neck and arm pain.” Repairing the damage involves removing the injured discs and stabilizing the spine with rods and screws. Traditional spine surgery involves exposing the spine by making deep cuts through the back muscles, resulting in up to a liter of blood loss, severe scarring and a risk of infection and other complications, Mollman notes. The conventional procedure

DR. DENNIS MOLLMAN (FAR RIGHT) AND HIS TEAM PERFORM MINIMALLY INVASIVE SPINE SURGERY. PHOTO COURTESY OF SLUCARE

requires a seven-to-10 day hospital stay, followed by extensive rehabilitation and a painful recovery period. Misplaced screws often prevent the spine from fusing properly, necessitating a return trip to the O.R. But Mollman is one of about 100 surgeons in the U.S. considered experts at a minimally invasive method, using technology developed by Medtronic. “We make small incisions on either side of the spine,” he says. “Then, guided by the O-arm, a device that scans the spine and sends images to a large TV screen, we monitor the spine and achieve precise placement of rods and screws.” Smaller incisions result in reduced pain and blood loss, and less risk of infection and tissue and muscle damage. The patient is usually out of the hospital in a day or two, so the procedure costs less, too, he adds. “This method is a quantum leap for spine surgery,” says Mollman, who hopes to establish SLU as a national Spine Center of Excellence, a collaborative effort between the departments of neurology and orthopedics. “At the follow-up appointment two weeks later, most patients feel so good they’re ready to go back to doing yoga and playing golf! I literally have to hold them back—to get a good fusion, you need to take it easy at least three months.”

HEALTH&BEAUTY

THOSE ACHY, [ BREAKY JOINTS. by mary konroy

Got osteoporosis? What about joint pain, bad knees or maybe even a broken wrist? In this edition, local experts discuss bone health, including an intriguing technique for regrowing cartilage.

[ wrist & hand surgery ] Many people mistake a wrist fracture for a simple sprain. Seek medical care for an accurate diagnosis and participate in physical therapy provided by a certified hand specialist. >> dr. daniel osei, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

& HAND/WRIST SPECIALIST, WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Wrist fractures are common, especially in an aging population. Although most are fixed non-operatively, plates and screws are used to repair fractures requiring surgery. The plates and screws hold bone fragments together and align the wrist. We continue to look for thinner and stronger metal plates so there is less irritation to the soft tissue surrounding the bone. If you sustain an injury to your hand or wrist, it’s best to see your primary care physician for an X-ray to confirm a diagnosis. Often people mistake a fracture for a sprain and let months pass before seeking medical help. By then, complications may have developed. We are also developing improved methods to treat finger contractions. That’s when a finger is permanently flexed or bent, impeding normal activities. Dupuytren’s contracture is one example that’s caused by a tightening of the fibrous tissue in the palm of the hand and fingers. In the past, surgery required making a large incision in the patient’s palm and affected finger. We now use tiny incisions or ‘poke’ holes to relieve the constricture, or inject chemical agents that ‘chew’ at scar tissue.

>> ann kammien, PHYSICAL THERAPIST,

REHAB 1 NETWORK - KIRKWOOD If the wrist is broken and surgery isn’t needed, the arm is casted. This patient will experience more stiffness than one whose wrist was surgically corrected with the bone aligned and supported by screws, or by screws and a metal plate. With either approach, physical therapy involves manipulating the soft tissue structures surrounding the bone. Our goal with casted patients is to enable them to turn their palm up and get their wrist to move in all four directions. Our goal with surgical patients is to have the patient move the tendons while we wait for the fracture to heal. As the bone heals, however, it develops scar tissue that can compress a nerve and lead to the development of secondary carpal tunnel syndrome. Hand surgery is more delicate and involves smaller joints and spaces. Post-operative swelling can lead to stiffness and loss of feeling. Fingers tend to pull down unless they are positioned correctly. Consequently, we mold our splints for optimal hand position. See a certified hand therapist trained in these injuries and their possible complications. The hand is complex and healing takes time.

[ osteoporosis & lifestyle ] Bone-weakening osteoporosis is a life-changer, and falls become a serious threat. Local health and medical experts suggest tips for those at risk and for those who already have it. >> sarah fuehne, PHYSICAL THERAPIST & OWNER, ACROVITA

There are a couple of basic things you need to do if you have, or are at risk of developing, bone-thinning osteoporosis. People with osteoporosis are more likely to fall and are more susceptible to complicated fractures. First, make your home environment safer. Reduce clutter, remove throw rugs and make sure area rugs have skid-resistant backing. Use nightlights in the hallways, by the stairs and in the bathroom. Install grab bars and don’t use a gloss wax on floors. Plopping down quickly in a chair, such as recliner, while you maintain a fixed spine can result in a compression fracture. If you have osteoporosis, walk for exercise. It’s a low-impact, weight-bearing exercise that can also provide you with cardiovascular benefit. If your doctor allows, perform low-impact aerobics but don’t use unnecessary force on your bones. If you are pre-osteoporotic, consider high-impact aerobics to build bone density and to delay onset of the disease. WOMEN’S HEALTH SPECIALISTS OF SAINT LOUIS Osteoporosis is the loss of bone mass or density. Bone density is measured by your T-Score, which shows how much your bone loss ‘deviates’ from the average bone mass of a healthy 30-year-old. That’s when bone mass peaks. If your T-score is -2.5 or more, you have osteoporosis, which makes bones fragile. It can cause the spine to compress. It can cause small fractures and make you lose spine stability, which causes you to be more susceptible to falls and breaking large bones, such as the hip. Osteoporosis is more common in women than men. Prevention is the best treatment especially for people with a family history of the disease. Weight-bearing activities, such as walking and aerobic exercises, can actually help lay new bone. Calcium supplements also can help, and most women don’t have enough of this building block. In general, women between 51 and 70 years of age need 1,200 milligrams of calcium per day. Don’t take one large pill. Take it in two sittings, about six hours apart. The body can absorb only 500 to 600 milligrams of calcium per dose.

joint pain // “Joint pain is pretty common,” says DR. BRIAN MCINTYRE OF MCINTYRE CHIROPRACTIC & ACUPUNCTURE CENTRE. A recent study estimated that about one-third of adults had joint pain over a 30-day period, he notes. “Realistically, everyone is going to experience joint pain if they live long enough, whether it’s stiffness, mild aches or severe pain.” Supplements, including glucosamine chondroitin, can be helpful, McIntyre says. “It’s controversial, but I’ve found that it works in my practice—but not 100 percent of the time. Nothing works 100 percent of the time, not even prescribed medication.” Physical activity can keep joints supple. McIntyre suggests low-impact exercise: swimming, water aerobics and stationary biking. “We sit too much in front of our computers and television sets,” he says. “Motion is good. It keeps the blood flowing.” Weight training strengthens the abs and core, and a strong core improves balance and helps prevent falls, he adds. “Be active, but if you continue to experience joint pain, go slow and modify activity levels as needed. If something hurts, back off.” Avoid processed foods as much as possible, McIntyre advises. “Sugar is a natural inflammatory and contributes to pain and swelling. Cutting back on sweets can help—but no one wants to give them up!”

[ what’s new with knees ] Partial knee resurfacing and new cartilage are options for some patients who experience pain but don’t need a total knee replacement.

exercise & rehab // “It’s up to the physical therapist as to when a patient can exercise following a bone injury,” says PERSONAL FITNESS TRAINER ERIC EMIG, OWNER OF EVOLUTION FITNESS. “We usually start exercise after therapy has ended. In fact, some patients bring me their therapist’s instructions for home workouts.” Patients should take it slow, Emig advises. “Start light. Reach a full range of motion first, and then add weights in small increments as you gain flexibility and strength. If it hurts, back off.” You don’t want to push it to the point where you’re causing physical harm, he says. “The best thing you can do following an injury is to take it easy. As long as you follow a well-designed progressive exercise regimen, you can come back from just about any injury.” If you’re newly injured and experiencing joint pain, follow the principles of RICE: rest, ice, compression and elevation. “If the injury is nagging, see your doctor,” Emig says. “And if physical therapy is prescribed, follow your therapist’s instructions.”

>> dr. matthew bradley, ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON, DES PERES HOSPITAL MAKOplasty is a robotic-assisted knee resurfacing procedur meant for patients with osteoarthritis who need only a partial knee replacement. The knee is made up of three compartments: the medial (the inside part), the lateral (the outside part) and the patellofemoral (the kneecap). Candidates for a MAKOplasty have worn out one or two of the three knee compartments. Usually these patients have already had a ‘scope’ procedure to remove debris that makes movement painful. Their next step would be a total knee replacement, but that requires removing healthy knee along with bad or worn-out sections. MAKOplasty is new in St. Louis and is an alternative to total knee replacement for select patients. It’s been around locally for about three months. It uses a smaller incision, and allows for quicker surgery and a quicker recovery than the traditional knee replacement. Because MAKOplasty utilizes a robot and a computer, the surgeon can provide better alignment. And as with tires, when the alignment is right, things last longer.

>>

dr. lyndon gross, ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON, THE ORTHOPEDIC CENTER OF ST. LOUIS Cartilage is like the enamel on your teeth; it has a smooth service that protects bone. When cartilage wears out, it’s arthritis. Some patients wear out a spot or two on their knee cartilage. These small, worn spots are cartilage lesions, and like a cavity, they hurt. Cartilage restoration procedures are an option for select people who have cartilage lesions but don’t need a total knee replacement. Generally, candidates are younger than 50 who, other than having a few well-defined lesions, have normal knee anatomy and good alignment. Restoration procedures enable the articular cartilage that covers the ends of bones to regenerate and knit together over the worn-out spaces. One restoration technique I perform is an autologous chondrocyte implantation. It’s a two-step procedure. Initially, a small piece of cartilage is removed from a non weight-bearing section of the knee and sent to a laboratory that stimulates chondrocytes—the cells that live in and produce cartilage—to multiply. In the second operation, the cells are inserted over the cartilage defect and covered with bio-absorbable membrane. The cells adhere to the bone and produce new cartilage, while the membrane dissolves. Patients see an improvement over nine months, or sooner.

Question: I’m a 56-year-old post-menopausal woman. I feel fine and haven’t broken any bones. Why should I get screened for osteoporosis?

Answer: When it comes to health, we sometimes ignore our bones. We keep up with our mammograms and other cancer screening tests and focus on our blood pressure and cholesterol as part of keeping heart healthy. For many individuals, paying attention to bone health is an afterthought.

An estimated nine million adults in the United States have osteoporosis, and an even larger group of Americans — 48 million adults — have low bone mass. People with low bone mass have an increased risk of developing osteoporosis and an increased risk of future bone fractures. Hip fractures are common in those with osteoporosis or low bone mass. Fractures in the vertebral bones (the scaffolding of the back) can lead to loss of height, curving of the spine, pain and serious disability. Regardless of your medical history, if you are a woman 65 years or older, or a man 70 years or older, you should have a bone density test performed. Other groups who should consider an evaluation of bone health are women transitioning to or having just achieved menopause and men age 50-69 with clinical risk factors for poor bone health. The most widely recommended test is one using a central DXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) machine. Similar to an X-ray of bones to measure thickness, the test takes an average of 10 -15 minutes and the results can help your doctor determine the best course of action. Your doctor may order additional blood tests and/or recommend diet and lifestyle changes to promote and maintain bone health. He or she may also suggest pharmacological therapy and advise getting the opinion of a doctor with expertise on bone health. If you have a history of broken bones or conditions that might predispose you to weak bones, talk to your doctor to determine if you are a candidate for a bone health evaluation.

WHAT IS VERMOUTH, ANYWAY?

GET YOUR DAILY DOSE OF

TOWN & STYLE

ONLINE 2012 & 2013 BY LIKING US ON FACEBOOK AND FOLLOWING US ON TWITTER.

Vermouth’s history begins in Turin, Italy, which in the 18th century was the epicenter for the wormwood trade. Turin already had a rich history of winemaking and herb growing, which set the stage for Antonio Benedetto Carpano to create his beverage, ‘vermuth.’ In the following decades, vermouth was not something one would consume straight up—rather, vanilla extract or bitters would be added. While consuming Carpano vermouth, it became popular to ask for the ratio of bitters to be half that of the vermouth, or in Italian ‘punt e mes.’ The ratio and phrase became so popular that the Carpano company began to bottle it and sell it as such. To date, Punt e Mes is still the most popular aperitif of the Carpano brand. After Turin, vermouth made the jump to France, where Joseph Noilly created the first dry vermouth in 1813. This set the framework for an up-and-coming brand named Dolin to take center stage later on in the 19th century, along with other Chambery vermouth producers. The vermouth blenders in Chambery were so quality-driven that their products were awarded the only A.O.C. guarantee of origin for vermouth in 1932, more than a century after production began.

GO FOR IT The most confusing part of vermouth is what to do with it. Can you sip it like wine? Does it have uses beyond the martini? The answer to both questions is absolutely, yes, please do! My suggestion is to try vermouth straight and then skip the normal martini or Manhattan. Try an Americano (equal parts Campari, sweet vermouth and some soda) or the Bronx cocktail (two parts gin, one part sweet vermouth, one part dry vermouth, one part orange juice). If you still are not a fan, try it again—because vermouth is one amazing drink. Vermouth, a mixture of at least 75 percent wine, plus sugar and a botanical distillate, is a mystifying aperitivo, a low-alcohol beverage consumed before a meal to open the palate. Before going into vermouth’s history, it’s important to know that the name ‘vermouth’ is actually a mispronunciation of the German, ‘Wermut,’ otherwise known as wormwood. You may be familiar with wormwood because it is the popular botanical incorrectly credited with giving people hallucinations after drinking absinthe, the little green fairy.

THIS NEW LAFAYETTE SQUARE restaurant has a lot of appeal. In part, it’s the ambience: dark woods, etched glass and Bruegel-esque characters peering out at you from the imposing wood bar. Then there’s the menu; it’s an appetizing blend of hearty Belgian dishes and French sauces. The list is small, and the starters, in particular (which here are called ‘entrees,’ in a direct translation of the French word for ‘openers’), have a very continental bent (steak tartare, escargots, quail, oysters, etc.) A handful of specialty dishes with challenging names (Blinde Vinken, Stoofvlees, Aloyau, etc.) have an appealing meat-and-potatoes heartiness. And their pairing with creamy French sauces elevates them to memorable, especially in the Kippenwaterzooi (roast chicken and vegetables, $18). A half Amish chicken is crisped and browned, skin-on, and surrounded by roasted root vegetables: cippolini onions, fingerling potatoes, quartered fennel

bulbs, baby carrots and house-made potato chips. It was presented in a heavy, shallow ceramic bowl, and just as I was admiring its visual appeal, the server emptied a gravy boat of creamy Hollandaise-style sauce over it. The thick sauce had a subtle tang, probably from mustard, given that Ghent is known for the famous Tierenteyn-Verlent mustard, dating to 1790. It’s no surprise that Tripel (which is a paean to potent Belgian ‘tripel’ ale, those with very high alcohol content) serves six kinds of steamed mussels; mussels are considered the national dish of Belgium. They traditionally are served with pommes frites on the side. Our Moules Provencals ($14 for two pounds) were stellar. And a side of frites offered thick, meaty potato fingers with a crisp, flavorful crust. Brought to the table in the pot, the mussels released a delicious, briny aroma. The tomato, garlic and herb sauce was intensely flavored, which is why you’ll want to scoop some up with every mussel. You’ll be rewarded

with bits of the mirepoix used in its preparation: tiny diced celery, onion and carrot. A subsequent order of Moules Mariniere was less exciting. The white wine shallot broth was flavorful, but the mussels weren’t as meaty and sweet as on our first visit. To see authentic Belgian Tripel in action, we ordered Lotte Tripel ($19), a thick slab of monkfish doused with Westmalle Trappist Tripel sauce and surrounded by leeks, endive, fennel and cippolini onions. It was another hearty dish with another flavorful sauce, slightly malty. A traditional Belgian meat preparation of Blinde Vinken (meat balls) was dry and not nearly as appetizing as the other two big dishes. Our desserts were good, though: layered mousse with two types of Belgian chocolate and flamed marshmallow topping, and waffles with apples, apple compote, apple sorbet and apple candy—refreshingly seasonal.

NEIL SIMON AND ANTON CHEKHOV BOTH WROTE PLAYS. That’s about the only similarity we’re likely to see between them. Chekhov created our image of Russian melancholy and despair tinged with humor in the face of misfortune; Simon perfected the formula for successful Broadway comedies and sentimental family dramas, both stuffed with one-liners. Before he wrote plays, Chekhov wrote short stories. Neil Simon turned eight of them into The Good Doctor, a play now onstage at The New Jewish Theatre. A narrator who describes himself as a writer and a doctor, like Chekhov, introduces each part. So it’s safe to assume that Chekhov himself is narrating the play. David Wassilak, who plays this character, speaks in a dry, quietly amused and bemused manner, quite right for these stories with their careful, sympathetic observation of human follies and foibles. Bobby Miller directs, and I can think of no one better suited to direct Chekhov by Simon. When you go—and you should go—you’ll find some of the funniest lines of the evening in Miller’s Director’s Note in the program. And you’ll also find a clear, beautifully paced production. Miller has assembled a delightful cast for the production. Wassilak’s narrator plays a role in some of the stories, usually as someone tripped up by a surprising turn of events (Chekhov’s stories often have an O. Henry-like twist at the end). The actors shine in multiple roles. Teresa Doggett is both the employer of a young governess and the relentless termagant making life miserable for a bank manager she wants money from. Jason Grubbe plays the hapless bank manager, as well as a senior bureaucrat besieged by a desperate underling and a suffering patient of a student dentist. Aaron Orion Baker plays the dentist, the underling, an adolescent introduced to the rites of manhood, and several other parts. Alina Volobuyeva, a welcome newcomer to St. Louis stages, plays a lovely wife, a young governess, an eager actress and a lady of the evening. Altogether they create a rich tapestry of the human comedy. Dunsi Dai’s spare set provides the spaces needed for each story, enriched by Wendy Greenwood’s properties, Maureen Berry’s lights and Michelle Friedman Siler’s costumes. Another Russian writer takes the stage currently at Upstream Theater in the Kranzberg Arts Center in Grand Center. The writer is Nikolai Gogol, and the piece is based on a short story, Diary of a Madman, adapted by David Holman, with Neil Armfield and Geoffrey Rush. To me, it’s less successfully adapted than the Chekhov. But it’s a more difficult piece, tracing the breakdown of a minor bureaucrat tormented by ambitions beyond his station and abilities. As a diary, the play is mostly a monologue, rarely the most dramatic of forms. Christopher Harris gives the man’s rantings full vent. It’s a bold performance but strangely remote, for which I mostly blame the script. Fortunately, a second character, an immigrant servant girl, sometimes enters the scene. Magan Wiles delights with a wonderfully rich performance, adding some welcome comedy to the piece. Wiles also plays the object of the protagonist’s romantic fantasies and a fellow patient at the asylum where he winds up. Joe Dreyer’s music accompanies and comments on the action, adding another welcome element. Philip Boehm’s direction strives to bring this monologue to dramatic life on a spare set by Michael Heil, with costumes by Katie Donovan and lights by Steve Carmichael. Diary of a Madman has the potential. The Good Doctor has the pleasure.

[ cup runneth over ] Two local breweries are planning expansions. SCHLAFLY BEER hopes to open a new brewing complex in North County or north city in the next decade to meet growing demand. 4 HANDS will add two 60-barrel tanks in October and another four in January.

A nifty little gadget at HARVEST allows customers to enjoy expensive wines by the glass. The Coravin drills a hollow needle through the cork and uses pressurized argon to extract wine without oxidizing the rest of the liquid, preserving it for later consumption.

[ who’s on first ? ] IVY MAGRUDER has been tapped to become corporate executive chef for GAMLIN RESTAURANT GROUP, which owns Sub Zero and the new Gamlin Whiskey House and Taha’a Twisted Tiki. Replacing him as general manager at Vin de Set is KAREN CAPUTA, who comes to the rooftop French bistro from Hilton at the Ballpark.

Guests, at $150 each, will receive a signed copy of the book and have the opportunity to dine with D’Amato, a friend of Bill Cardwell’s, famous for his Milwaukee restaurants Sanford and Coquette Cafe.

[ serving up hope ] PAT WOODS believes a restaurant can offer more than a good meal. The longtime College Hill resident and former job recruiter plans to open FRESNO’S DINER at 2017 E. Grand Blvd., the neighborhood’s first sit-down eatery in decades. She’s planning for it to serve as a safe community meeting place, job training center and small-business catalyst. Four churches from across the region have provided volunteers and fundraising support, and Woods hopes the restaurant/business center will be open in time for Christmas, a kind of “miracle on Grand Boulevard.”

ROMEO AND JULIET >> Director Carlo Carlei and screenwriter Julian

Fellowes play it safe with Shakespeare in Romeo & Juliet, with beautiful backdrops, sumptuous costumes and PG-13 romance. The unlikelihood of Romeo and Juliet’s instant infatuation is one of the story’s major flaws, and unfortunately this production neither fully sells nor questions their love, leaving it up to the viewer to suspend disbelief. Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth are sweet as the star-crossed lovers, but Paul Giamatti steals the show as the idealistic Friar Laurence, who hopes the couple’s union will bridge their families’ rift. Sadly, the editing excised many of Shakespeare’s humorous lines, leaving the film a lovely, but not especially lively, tragedy. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? incredibly tense situation onboard an American cargo ship helmed by Tom Hanks in the title role. Four Somali pirates board and spend the entire movie wielding machine guns at very close range; you never know who’s going to die and when. But the intelligence and humanity of the Somali ‘captain,’ Muse (pronounced moosay), are so touching that you find yourself torn between him and Phillips. And the film clearly means to draw comparisons between the two. Both men are called ‘captain’; the American sailors are hardy and well-fed, while the Somalis are rail-thin (Muse’s nickname is ‘Skinny’); and in opening scenes you see Phillips with a loving family in his New England home, while in Somalia you see Muse being roused from sleep on a mat. The film is haunting. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Don’t miss this movie —D.W.

PHOTOS BY ROD PATERSHUK

DEBBIE HARRIS, PREGNANT WITH HER third child, moved into 8 Mayfair Road 17 years ago. Her family was about to expand, and so was her new Ladue home. Although initially drawn to the 1.8-acre property because it was on a tucked-away, quiet street, Harris quickly began collaborating with an architect to renovate the entire house, effectively doubling its size. The home is now 8,143 square feet, with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. “I had so much fun with the renovations,” Harris says. “We worked really hard to make sure the new parts blended seamlessly with the old. Although everything in the home is completely new, it retained its charm and warmth and character.” Some of that character is found in the living room, which features padded, off-white silk walls. “It’s like what the old fancy homes used to have on their walls,” Harris says. “My kids practiced piano and violin in the room, and it has a fireplace. It’s just beautiful and I loved it.” The renovations extended to the surrounding grounds, which Harris re-landscaped with the help of a friend. “I tried to keep it organic around the house, and we used plants that don’t require a lot of upkeep and were appropriate for the area,” she says. A tennis court,

fallen into disuse, was freshened up. “It had gone back to nature, so we redid it; it’s been a fun feature for everybody,” Harris says. The addition of a basement wine cellar provided the perfect space to host wine-tasting parties. “It has a glass front, so that part looks contemporary, but the rest of the cellar is traditional,” Harris says. “It has a slate floor and holds a few hundred bottles.” The family also hosted intimate dinner parties and cooking classes. “Michael Johnson from Momos did a cooking class once in our kitchen,” Harris says, “and the room makes entertaining easy—there are tons of appliances and warming drawers.” Wine-tastings and cooking classes might be delightfully sophisticated, but Harris’ favorite parties were family milestone celebrations, such as graduations and birthday parties. These often centered around the kitchen, which also served as an everyday family gathering space. “All the homework and cooking were done at the large island,” Harris says. “It was really important to me that we had a space to come together as a family.” Although she is sad to leave the home where her four children grew up, she has moved on to a smaller Ladue property requiring less upkeep.

SCULPTURAL LIGHTING:

There’s no rule that says chandeliers or lamps must stick to traditional shapes and sizes. For a bold, modern look, combine art and function with abstract, sculptural designs, like in this large atomic-inspired sphere local designer Joy Tribout had custom-made by John Rosselli & Associates for a client.

lighting:

A disproportionately large ceiling fixture or chandelier is a surefire way to add drama over the dining room table or in the bedroom. Find one you love, then use it as a focal point around which to decorate the rest of the room.

DRUM SHADES: Drum shades are popping up in designer rooms of all types, from kitchens and dining rooms to living rooms, bedrooms and even bathrooms. “People love the shape of the drum shade, whether it be on a chandelier, pendant or portable lamp, because it can be elegant or casual, traditional or modern. It’s simple and fits with any style,” says Patty Birkhead, buyer/showroom designer for Metro Lighting.

EXPOSED BULBS: This updated take on the utilitarian

light bulb on a cord creates a look that is at once rustic, modern and elegant. You can find many variations, including individual pendant lights or chandeliers, such as this Cluster Glass Pendant from West Elm. It has four exposed-bulb glass spheres hanging from a polished-nickel base.

Furniture, rugs, window treatments, wall colors—we easily can gauge their importance in the decor of our homes. But there is another element whose contribution often is under-appreciated: lighting. It is the backdrop from which all else evolves. It sets the mood, creates the canvas, and adds warmth, energy and romance. You want it to be both functional and fabulous. Make sure the fixtures you choose will provide the kind of illumination you need, but don’t ignore these inspiring trends.

NON-METALLIC FINISHES: People usually select light

fixtures in basic silver, gold or brushed nickel finishes, but a chandelier or pendant in a bold color or non-metallic finish adds an unexpected and playful element. Make your fixture stand out as a design statement, like this black chandelier does, placed in a bedroom by designer Karen Pepper of

Edwin Pepper Interiors.

NATURAL MATERIALS: Those who prefer a softer, more

rustic look might opt for fixtures made of warmer materials. Soft Surroundings’ Waterloo Chandelier features aged wood applied to a wrought iron frame with turned-wood pendants hanging from each curve for a more laid-back take on traditional.

LAYERED, MULTIDIMENSIONAL LIGHTING: To create the most

polished ambience in a room, lighting should be layered and multidimensional. Complement overhead or recessed ceiling lights with ambient table and floor lamps and special task lighting to give your room depth and highlight specific areas of interest. AUTOMATED LIGHTING CONTROL: Set the mood in every

room with fully automated lighting systems, customized at the touch of a button. “At bedtime, your house can ‘go to sleep.’ You can turn off certain interior lights and turn on outdoor security lights, all using your smartphone or tablet,” says Terrence Hampton, partner at Life Media.

HOMEWORK] DEAR HOMEWORK,

Our ’40s-era ranch in Clayton sits on a peninsula-like corner lot that leaves the rear of our house fully exposed to passers-by and the western sun. Do you have any thoughts as to how we might increase both the privacy and curb appeal of this side of our home? ———BACKED INTO A CORNER

DEAR BACKED INTO A CORNER,

AFTER

BEFORE

Luckily, the rear of your house is built of brick and stone, so at least we don’t have a wall of vinyl siding to deal with. Of course, I would vote for removing the chain link fence and the basketball hoop, and finding a way to hide the trash cans. Next, I would create a curved terrace, centered on your huge living room window. I would border this with a waist-high evergreen hedge anchored by new stone light piers. The hedge gives you the privacy you need and a dominant element that the composition needs. A medium-sized shade tree will shelter the terrace from the afternoon sun, and new canvas awnings can add charm and protect the main rooms from the setting sun. Additional refinements such as a new French door, a long window box, and driveway landscaping and detailing will work with the other elements to give this rear façade the impact and importance of a front façade. That’s what is called for, due to its unique placement. I hope these suggestions make you feel less cornered. ———HOMEWORK

FROMTHE GARDEN HOME CANNING 101

®

by p. allen smith | photos by mark fonville

PRESERVE YOUR SUMMER BOUNTY

Canning brings back memories of working in my Aunt Genny’s kitchen ‘putting up’ batches of tomato sauce and green beans, so I’m delighted to see the practice make a comeback. Canning your own food is a great way to extend the life of your summer bounty, and opening a jar of fresh tomato sauce or pickled cucumbers can evoke memories of warm summer days during the cold, drab winter months. Just hearing the word canning may conjure up images of scary pressure cookers and an eternity spent in the kitchen. Rest assured today’s pressure cookers and water-bath canners are safer and easier to use. If this is your first time preserving food, partner with an experienced canner, especially if you tend to fly by the seat of your pants when it comes to following recipes. The canning process varies depending on the food being preserved, so make sure you follow a reliable recipe.

EvEry family has a story. We Want to hear yours. In celebration of St. Louis’ 250th birthday,

Town & Style is compiling tales from readers about their families’ history in St. Louis.

Heavy, large stock pot for acidic foods

Jars with self-sealing lids

Oven mitts for protecting your hands

What brought your family here? How did they contribute to the fabric of our town? Where did they work? Did they start a business? Settle Wildwood? Build homes in Clayton?

We want everyday stories about everyday people. Help T&S publish 250 stories in honor of St. Louis’ 250th!

DiscoverSTL.com | Clayton 314 726 6442 | Des Peres 314 775 2050 | Town & Country 636 394 2424 BASIC STEPS FOR CANNING Clean jars and lids with hot water and soap. This also can be done in the dishwasher. Sterilize jars and lids by submerging in boiling water, right-side up, for 10 minutes. Keep jars hot in a pot of simmering water until ready to fill. Fill warm jars with hot food, leaving headspace as recommended in the recipe. This space allows the food to expand during processing and creates a vacuum seal.

Wipe the rim of the jar to clean and ensure a good seal. Tighten the screw bands just enough to secure; do not over-tighten. Process in either a pressure cooker or hot water bath, depending on recipe.

7111 Bruno avenue ~ MaPLewood 4 Beds | 2.5 Baths | $389,000

Remove jars from canner and cool. Listen for the lids to pop, indicating a good seal. Lids should be secure on the top of the jar. Store jars in a dark pantry that stays between 50 and 70 degrees Farenheit.

IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO BORROW EQUIPMENT THE FIRST TIME YOU TRY CANNING, BUT I’M GUESSING AFTER ONE TRY, YOU’LL CATCH THE CANNING BUG AND INVEST IN YOUR OWN.
