from the editor's desk I didn’t realize this is the Blues’ 50th season! Of course, I’m not much of a sports fan, but I do consider hockey different: it’s so uncomplicated. A bunch of guys on skates fight over a small, deadly disk with no regard for life or limb. Growing up in Chicago, I always was fascinated by how a toothless Bobby Hull managed to chew food. So when the Blues hosted a media luncheon at Scottrade Center to mark the momentous season, I made the effort to be there. I mean, 50 years is big, and hearing about the behind-the-scenes workings would be interesting. The first thing I noticed (well, after the frigid temperature in Scottrade) was how many hockey personalities were present. There was announcer Chris Kerber (whom the others called Kerby), GM Doug Armstrong (whom they called Armie), owner Tom Stillman and Bernie (The Magician) Federko, all talking about the game and sharing memories (mostly in Canadian accents). Much to my surprise, they thanked us for giving media support to the Blues through thick and thin. They also implied this was going to be a thick year, maybe even one that brings the Stanley Cup to St. Louis. They regaled us with Blues snippets, most unfamiliar to me, like, ‘We’ll never be homers.’ (Isn’t that a baseball term?) And, ‘I told him to rim the puck around so I could get the goalie.’ (I’m pretty sure that is something they’re not supposed to do, since the next thing mentioned was “self-regulating” on the ice.) Overall, I was impressed to learn that the current ownership is a group of totally local investors. And that they consider themselves “stewards of the franchise.” In fact, a sign that greets people as they enter reads, The fans are the most important part of the game. Without them, there is no game. No wonder their fans bleed Blue.

I KEEP A NOTEBOOK TO JOT DOWN IDEAS

for future columns. Sometimes they don’t turn into anything more than musings from an unsettled mind. But why let a good thought go to waste?

A glimpse at what’s going on around St. Louis and beyond.

by dorothy weiner

Next month local philanthropy will be celebrated at the 36th annual

National Philanthropy Day Luncheon. St. Louis has much to

celebrate in this arena, but a big shoutout that day will go to MAXINE CLARK and BOB FOX, MARSHA and BILL RUSNACK (pictured), RICH LEDBETTER and several other special honorees.

Did you know some people have a Happy Resting Face? I know, I’ve discussed the affliction I suffer from: resting bitch face (RBF, which Kanye, Queen Elizabeth and Anna Kendrick also suffer from). When my face is at rest, I look mad, and have been told for years to “smile” by people I don’t know but whom I want to punch. Well, I just learned there is a group of people who suffer from Happy Resting Face (HRF). These people must deal with strangers who constantly approach them for directions and who are surprised when they swear. And to quote one of my favorite characters, Kate Chastain, from the reality TV show Below Deck, the only ones who should have a happy resting face are lunatics and labradors. Is karma responsible for me tripping and tearing my expensive jeans? I like nice clothes, but when it comes to blue jeans, I usually am fine with less expensive brands, mostly because I can’t really tell the difference between a $78 pair and a $212 pair. However, I recently tried on an expensive pair and fit into a much smaller size, so of course I bought them! I thought all my working out and portion control was paying off. (Please do not ruin this by talking about vanity sizing in the clothing industry.) So, there I was walking in Kirkwood, in my small jeans and flip-flops, when I tripped. I tried to recover but ended up on all fours on the sidewalk. I quickly looked around to see if anyone saw me (no), then went to meet my siblings at PJs Tavern for lunch, where I received a fair amount of mocking for my inability to walk and a Band-Aid to stop the bleeding. That’s when I noticed the tear in my jeans. Hmm. Was this karma for spending so much on them? Or was I just a klutz? We’ll never know—I mean, I’ll never know; you probably don’t care. Why does no one like me? I may need to quit all social media. You see, I have begun to measure my selfworth by the number of ‘likes’ I get on my Facebook and Instagram posts. It has become a vicious cycle. I do my best to like other friends’ posts with the assumption that they will return the favor, and when they don’t, well, what am I to assume other than they don’t like me? Not me exactly, but my posts. It is starting to affect my self-esteem. Actually, I wonder if I’ve gotten boring, which would be way worse than not being liked. Don’t forget to vote! This election, this election, this election! I can’t wait for it to be over, and I love politics. But this one makes me want to scream. Everyone needs to get out and vote. If you aren’t sure who to vote for, I’d be happy to tell you, but I suspect you have already made up your mind. Remember, if you don’t vote, you can’t complain for the next four years—that ought to be incentive enough for anyone! CONTACT PATTY AT PHANNUM@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM.

THEY MIGHT BE 30 FEET UP, SUSPENDED (IN A HARNESS) ON A CARGO NET.

They might be doing the foxtrot, the rumba or the national dance of the Philippines. They could be spinning a jump rope so fast it blurs to nothing. This is P.E. at Forsyth School, where fitness in both brain and body is emphasized. Physical education teachers Justin Harris and Shelley Stone say the school is unique in its focus. It has more teams in the Clayton Parks and Recreation sports leagues than any other school in the area, Harris says, and offers a special high-ropes course that is unparalleled. The P.E. curriculum also believes strongly that dance has an important role to play in the overall development of young people. “It often is left out of physical education programs,” Stone says. “But it’s a wonderful way to get the brain and body working together.” To that end, children are taught ballroom dancing and African dance of the Ivory Coast. Philippine tinikling, which uses sticks and is similar to double dutch jump roping, has been part of the curriculum for the past 10 years. Forsyth’s interdisciplinary approach to learning means that P.E. units are designed to complement academic and music classes as students learn about culture, geography and music. And the enjoyment of dance, Harris says, spills outside the classroom and onto the playground, where children often can be seen practicing their steps on their own time. The ballroom dance unit teaches etiquette and grace, says Stone, adding

that students even choose to dress up for the end-of-unit performance assessment. Forsyth prides itself generally on what it calls its ‘Challenge Curriculum,’ which is nowhere more evident than in the gym’s 10-year-old Adventure Center. Here, the 30-foot ceiling is strung with ropes and nets, and a wall is fitted with climbing holds. Not only do children climb rope ladders and walk the high beam, but they sometimes do so blindfolded. “It’s not just physical, it’s mental,” Harris says. “We want them to feel comfortable feeling uncomfortable.” Stone adds: “You’re 8 and you’re 30 feet off the ground; it’s incredible to see!” Each P.E. class begins with high-intensity ‘functional movement’ (pushing, pulling, jumping and lifting), which strengthens the body and improves flexibility, balance and stamina. Fifth- and sixth-graders have 45 minutes of P.E. each day, while the lower grades have 30. Eighty-five percent of students play on a Forsyth league team. At the end of the year, a rite of passage takes part in the gym, when sixth-graders— in helmets and harnesses—are hauled to the ceiling by classmates for a symbolic walk across the high beam. While they are up there, the students write their name in a book, along with a message for friends and family. “For these kids, it’s like climbing Mount Everest and leaving a little something behind,” Stone says. “It’s very moving. It’s so Forsyth.”

[ TALKOF THETOWNS ] by bill beggs jr.

Like mushrooms, Halloween specialty stores pop up every year in late August and early September: Here today, gone in November. They have big, removable banners that obscure the nameplates of former storefronts. One of them, a onetime Blockbuster Video store, is in Richmond Heights across from the Galleria on Brentwood Boulevard: Halloween Express. These temporary emporia occupy vacant spaces. I think the For Sale or Lease sign touts this one as 10,000 square feet, and every square inch is occupied by cute costumes for kids and, of course, sleazy getups for adults. This year is a slam-dunk, since Halloween comes about a week before the most obnoxious run-up to a presidential election in our memory comes to its bitter end—Bernie’s face on a stick, Hillary and Donald wigs, rubber elephant and donkey masks. So, why attach a dozen miniature cereal boxes to a smock with plastic knives to become a ‘cereal killer’ when you can masquerade as either of the most vilified candidates ever, depending on which side of the aisle you’re on? On an early October afternoon, Spirit of Halloween was about as busy as your friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart … all that was missing was some old dude offering you a shopping cart. By the first week of November, savvy temporary shopkeepers will have switched out banners and merchandise and converted these wide-open spaces into stores that sell artificial Christmas trees, Santa suits, inflatable reindeer and other tchotchkes for the winter holidays. Or they will have just vanished like retail gypsies … or creepy clowns.

RICHMOND HEIGHTS

Kids could have turned today’s trash into tomorrow’s treasures at The Magic House a couple weekends ago during the Recycled Art event, the latest installment in a yearlong Visiting Artist series at the children’s museum. Art educators from Perennial helped groom the recyclers of the future, teaching young visitors how to reduce waste by turning recyclable materials into eco-friendly masterpieces such as jewelry, WEBSTER GROVES decor and stationery. Perhaps you, too, are interested in making junk into jewels—after a fashion (you won’t be able to return trip, but it will overnight in KC on the 27th, with crush charcoal into diamonds). Look into Perennial, a a full day of display at that city’s Union Station on the community workshop and store in St. Louis that offers 28th before departing for Lawrence, Kansas. If you’re so educational programming in creative reuse, repurposed inclined, you could take Amtrak to see it up close and home goods, and eco-friendly project supplies. personal. Perennial’s mission is to build a creative culture of ‘Will the wolf survive?’ That was sustainability in which discarded items are transformed the question posed by the band into valued and cherished resources. Los Lobos in a thoughtful song from the 1980s. The answer, from Union Pacific’s No. 844, one of the the Endangered Wolf Center in largest steam locomotives ever built, Eureka, is, ‘Yes, indeed!’ Further proof that what the chugged through the metro last center’s been doing has been working well is the recent week on a journey from Kansas City, certification from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums overnighting in the StL. But getting close enough to it (AZA, est. 1924), quite a prestigious honor. For for a photo was akin to trying to snap a selfie with Mick certification, the Endangered Wolf Center underwent Jagger. Train buffs are absolutely crazy for this chooa meticulous, onsite AZA inspection to ensure it has choo, which in 1944 was the last steam locomotive met and will continue to meet ever-rising standards, delivered to the UP. The engine has run hundreds of thousands of miles since being ‘retired’ in 1962. AZA officials say the center has shown it of Marilyn Monroe. OK, that’s not exactly accurate. But ranks among the best in the world and is a true leader there may have been more admirers in Kirkwood, where the train stopped at the historic station for a half-hour, than have been there for many a political candidate’s whistle-stop. Anyhow, the locomotive, which pulls excursion trains and serves as the railroad’s ‘publicity’ vehicle, will pass through Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas, returning on Halloween to Cheyenne, Wyoming, for a well-needed rest. It was supposed to pass through Webster Groves sometime between 12:45 and 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the 18th. That was the schedule, anyhow. (Since Mussolini is dead, one can never be sure anymore whether the trains will run on time.) It is a bit disappointing that the train is not slated to stop anywhere in or near the Lou on its

in wildlife conservation. This is, of course, what the center is all about, along with combating long-held misunderstandings about these majestic creatures, which some Western landowners routinely shoot as if they were coyotes. That said, wolves (and, yes, coyotes) are more essential to critter control than anyone’s .22-caliber rifle, and driving them to extinction would break the great circle of life. Along with the Mexican wolf, the center’s endangered species include two other types of wolf, two types of fox, and African painted dogs. Want to visit? PredaTours are offered Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. through the fall and winter. The center’s address: 6750 Tyson Valley Road in Eureka. There will be no Black Friday at Dillard’s-Chesterfield Mall. And no sales before or anytime soon after what likely would have been a lucrative Christmas season for the department store, devastated by a flood in September that caused untold thousands of dollars in damage to merchandise and to the store itself. Signs were hurriedly taped on the glass doors apologizing for the ‘inconvience’ and stating that the store would be ‘temporary’ closed (I hope they’re getting some spelling instruction during the interim). Outside doors just featured the signs, some pasted up crooked, because there were interior gates blocking the view inside. Dumpsters were in the parking lot. But posted inside the upper and lower level sliding glass doors to the mall and obscuring the view inside for the curious were large posters for makeup, clothing and Dillard’s ‘designer’ brands such as Gianni Bini. Word is that the store is to be remodeled CHESTERFIELD and will reopen in early 2017, maybe by February. But you’d think a corporation that can afford such lushly produced posters and splashy fullpage newspaper ads might loosen the purse strings and make the most of the disaster with banners or some such to tempt shoppers with teasers about a lavish remodel and grand reopening coming … soon. But the signs were reprinted on someone’s office printer and replaced at least once, albeit with fewer misspellings and/or typos, on the same 8½ by 11 white paper. And attached using cellophane tape. Not quite glamorous enough for an establishment peddling style!

GET PHYSICAL BY KARYN WILLIAMS

hether you play them, love watching them or don’t know anything about them, sports are an integral part of our lives as Americans—and they have a powerful presence in our schools. Not only do they encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices, school officials like John Burroughs director of athletics Peter Tasker point out that being part of a team teaches valuable life lessons. “Our playing fields are classrooms without walls,” he says. “Athletics is our second curriculum.” Tasker says he never imagined being in his current position; he enjoyed teaching math and Spanish (and continues to teach the latter) at JBS when he arrived 12 years ago. But now in his seventh year as director of athletics, he notes the athletic department is tied to every aspect of the institution—the student body, faculty, coaches, parents, alumni, development and more—and he believes it should be. Because more than anything else offered, athletic involvement is about the school’s philosophy of revealing character. “The essence of a student’s character is revealed very quickly out on the field,” Tasker says. “If we’re good stewards of the journey, we can forge great character.” His position, he notes, allows him to see why it’s important for kids to be involved in athletics. It’s something the school community believes so strongly, that participation is a requirement. Freshmen and sophomores must be involved with a team sport on some level for two out of three seasons, and there is a minimum of fitness for the open season. For juniors and seniors, it’s one out of three seasons, and the other two open seasons are filled with fitness or an independent activity. “Our philosophy includes balance,” Tasker explains. “We’re trying to educate our students to have a certain set of skills so they can lead a healthy and fulfilling life. We feel that athletics are an essential part of that.” He says in order for schools to make a difference, teaching core values through athletics is a must, and now, more of the burden falls on schools to talk about issues of character, ethics and life lessons. “If a student is lucky enough to be in a two-parent household, both parents are most likely working,” he says. “And participation in religious communities is on the decline, so it’s up to us.”

The essence of a student’s character is revealed very quickly out on the field. If we’re good stewards of the journey, we can forge great character.

He notes that coaches have the opportunity to talk to students about overcoming adversity, how to live for something bigger than themselves, and how to set goals and make sacrifices. And sports are a great way to let go and have fun, he adds. In the end, Tasker says if you focus on performance and moral skills, you will find the process is enriched and the end results are better.

Brian Kessler has been the activities director at Parkway West High School for 10 years and involved with coaching varsity baseball in various roles (including as head coach) since graduating high school. He played baseball in college and has two teenage children who are or have been heavily involved in both club and school sports. “I’ve seen the whole puzzle from every perspective: as a player, parent, coach and administrator,” Kessler says. “Here at West, it always goes back to the same question: Why do we want students involved in sports?” His answer: The more students are involved with the school outside of the classroom, the more invested they become in the community at large and the better relationships they build with classmates and adults. “Hopefully, this will motivate them to be greater than they are today,” Kessler says. “We have a saying here: Take care of yourself, take care of each other and take care of this place. And that completely embodies being part of a team.” Kessler notes studies have shown that students who are involved in sports tend to have better grades, stay away from negative influences, learn how to work with others, overcome adversity, and deal with conflict in a positive way. “Our coaches are amazing,” Kessler says. “They truly are teaching life lessons through sports.” He points out that it’s a team effort in every aspect. “We ask the parents to help us educate and guide their children. We want to prepare kids for the path rather than prepare the path for the kids; it’s a pretty interesting concept.” Kessler admits it can be hard at times, and there is failure involved out on the field. “Often, what students learn from failure far outweighs what they’ll learn from success,” he notes. “We want to do anything we can to promote students getting involved and having a connection to school.”

COVER STORY

[LOVE & FAITH THE ST. AUSTIN SCHOOL by alexa beattie THE ST. AUSTIN SCHOOL EMPHASIZES JOY. You can hear it in the singing that comes from

the corridors. You can see it in the gait of the children as they skip down the hall. “It feels more like family here,” says headmistress Gerry Dolan, who has led the school since it opened in 2011. Currently, there are 70 students in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth, which means everyone knows everyone. “At recess, it looks more like a family barbecue,” says admissions director Danielle Morgenthaler. “Everyone plays together.” The school offers a classical program of primary education “grounded in the intellectual and spiritual wealth of the Catholic faith.” Dolan says its mission ‘to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ’ is taken from St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. “We wish to develop the natural love of God in the hearts of the children so that they seek Him above all things. Christ is at the center of all we do,” Dolan explains. “We recognize that we all are created in God’s image and believe our role is to help form character in each child so that he/she will develop sound judgment and self-mastery.” The Chaplaincy Program is provided by Benedictine monks from Saint Louis Abbey, and every day begins and ends with prayer. Dolan says the academic curriculum is rigorous, and because classes are small, with 17 students at most, teachers know each child’s learning style and what motivates them. “We keep the bar just above their heads so they are always reaching for it,” Dolan explains. The school has an interdisciplinary approach to learning, which means that the different academic subjects echo and complement each other as much as possible. In addition to the core subjects, Latin and Spanish also are taught. Children learn Biblical Hebrew to enhance their study of scripture. Because it firmly holds to the Catholic conviction that parents are the first and most enduring educators of their children, the school works collaboratively with families. “When parents drop their children off at school in the morning, they want to feel secure in the knowledge that their child will be influenced by someone they trust,” Dolan says. “At St. Austin, we seek to assist parents in passing on their religious and moral values by promoting a consistent message at school.” Morgenthaler says the school’s small size and emphasis on goodness means that kindness is central here. “We talk about virtues all the time, and that way, discipline issues can be headed off at the pass,” she says. For now, the school is located in Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Town & Country, but it’s looking for a new home. “This will allow us to double our numbers,” Dolan says, adding that they will likely never go higher than 150. “Small is good. We’re one, big, loving family,” she concludes.

Ranked No. 1 in the state in the 100-meter backstroke, Chaminade senior T.J. Halliburton is chasing his first state title. A year after missing most of the season with a stress reaction in her right tibia, Webster Groves junior Gabi Kohring is making up for lost time. She won five of her first six cross country meets this fall and recorded a personal-best time of 18:51 at the Hazelwood West Invitational.

Q | HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SEASON SO FAR? A| I just wanted to have the best possible one and recover from that awful season last year when I was hurt. I want to medal at State but have fun with it at the same time. It’s so easy to get bogged down with the competition. Halliburton is well on his way. He just broke Chaminade’s pool record with a time of 50.95—his fastest without being shaved or tapered, which is when swimmers cutback on their workouts leading up to big races. The senior, who also excels in the freestyle and butterfly sprints, was one of only two swimmers in Missouri to win four medals in the 2015 State Meet. He hopes to swim at SLU next year under the guidance of his dad, swimming and diving head coach Jim Halliburton, who also coaches him on the Flyers Aquatics Swim Team. “His dream has always been for me to swim for him, and it’s a program that is climbing,” says the younger Halliburton, who is ranked the No. 2 recruit in Missouri by collegeswimming.com. “I would like to be a part of it. It’s also a good fit academically. I want to study sports psychology because I think the mental side of sports is so much more important than many people realize.” The senior worked on the mental aspect this summer when he was sidelined with a lung infection due to complications from cystic fibrosis. He spent his time on dry land planning what he’d do when he was able to get back into the pool. When he was cleared in mid-August, he was more than ready. “I have been doing better than ever,” he says. “I know that everything I thought about and planned prepared me.” Now, a state title and a state record would be a perfect cap to his high school career. “My dad was a six-time state champion,” he says. “I just want to at least win one to be something of what he was. He’s the one who taught me to love swimming.”

TOWN TALK

[ soccer sensation ] KIRSTEN DAVIS

While it may be the offseason for high school soccer, Westminster senior Kirsten Davis is doing anything but resting. Last month, she was the lone Missourian among 26 players invited to the U-18 U.S. national team training camp in San Diego. “Not many from the Midwest get called up to camp, and it’s cool to represent the area,” the senior forward says. “I like the pressure. I’m the only Missourian at camp, and I’m doing my best to get back.” Davis was called to train four times by U.S. coaches in 2015. The September invitation was her first of 2016 after showcasing her talents the past year with Scott Gallagher’s 1998/99 ECNL team. She was determined to make an impression at the San Diego camp, and it worked. Soon after camp ended, she was invited to join the U.S. U-18 team in Ireland for a tournament later this month. “I love going to those camps because you’re surrounded by players who are all participating at a high level and who have the same goals you have,” she says. “I love the atmosphere it creates.” While Davis’ immediate plans after high school are to play at Texas Tech, her ultimate goal is to find her niche on the U.S. women’s national team. She wants to represent the U.S. at the 2018 FIFA U-20 World Cup in France and eventually join the full national team. Those aspirations started a few years ago when Davis was training with the Australian national team. During sixth through eighth grade, her family lived in Sydney, Australia, because of her father’s job. “My time there completely changed how I viewed the game,” she says. “It made me realize I wanted to play at the highest level. The training there was very technical. I would spend hours in my backyard by myself just working on my technique. You have to be willing to put in the work when no one is watching. It will pay off.”

TOWN TALK

[PARENT TRAP BOUNDLESS DREAMS by dr. tim jordan PAUL

COELHO, best-selling author of The Alchemist, was an aspiring writer in his youth, much to his parents’ chagrin. He grew up during a repressive dictatorship in Brazil, and his parents urged him to take the safe route by becoming an engineer. Bribes, threats and psychiatrists all failed to force Paul to give up his dream of being a writer. Consequently, his parents committed him to a mental institution because they feared he was crazy. Paul escaped and moved to America. I worry that many young adults today lack the grit to follow their dream when it goes against the grain. I read about entrepreneur Brian Chesky in a People magazine article last year. His well-intentioned parents encouraged him to major in something that would get him a well paying job with health care benefits. But Brian, too, chose to follow his heart, which led him to study art at the Rhode Island School of Design. After graduation, he struggled to pay his rent in L.A. until fate intervened. A conference sold out all the hotels in town, and Chesky had the idea of turning his apartment into a B&B. He and his roommate made $1,200 the first week, and a new business idea was born: booking homes the way one does hotel rooms. Everyone told them it was a bad idea, but Chesky was not deterred. He is now 34 years old and worth $3 billion. His website, Airbnb, connects 60 million global travelers with 2 million listings. Chesky’s advice to young adults: “You just have to believe in yourself. If I didn’t, there wouldn’t be Airbnb.” But parents have the tendency to discourage their kids from careers in the arts, and even in education, because you can’t make a good living doing that. Chesky made his arts education work for him: “As an artist, you have to sell your work, you have to brand yourself. It was a boot camp for business,” he says. Many kids don’t want to displease their parents, so they give up on their dreams. A limitless future becomes limited, and they settle into a constricted life path. A child’s dreams are shaped by many factors, including advice from adults, cultural conditioning, what is valued in society and peer pressure. I see kids starting early in life to follow a regimented, prescribed path laid out by their family and the education system, leaving little room for their own ideas and desires. I encourage parents to embrace their children as they are, not as they wish them to be. Allow them to develop their own definition of what success means for them. Support them in finding their passions, and then, from the periphery, fan their flames. Following their heart and engaging in their own boundless dreams are what create a life of happiness and fulfillment—and isn’t that what all parents want for their children?

KARYN MEYER & SCOTT WILLIAMS

8 | 27 | 16

by karyn williams | photos by todd studios photography I KNEW FROM THE BEGINNING OUR WEDDING WAS GOING TO BE MAGICAL, simply because the man

I married can be described the same way. It didn’t matter where we said ‘I do,’ we knew it was going to be the best day of our lives. To make it even more special, we also were creating a family with my two children, Autumn and Kellen, and their excitement only added to ours. Scott likes to tell me he knew from the very beginning I was the one. We had dated exactly one year to the date when he proposed; he took me to Castlewood State Park Oct. 17 for a hike. We found ‘our rock’ on the way up, where we could spend hours looking out at the river and cliffs in peace, and he told me he couldn’t imagine a future without ‘us.’ We celebrated afterward at the same table in Milagro where our first conversations took place. When we moved into our first home together in Glendale, we realized there was no better setting to start our lives as a family. We wanted a private, intimate ceremony that reflected who we are as a couple. The 36 guests included our family and closest friends, those who truly knew and loved the four of us. The ceremony had everyone in tears, we were told, thanks to its personal touches: our brother-in-law was the officiant, family and friends wrote remarks and recited a poem, and Scott and I wrote our own deeply personal and emotional vows. There was a perfectly short sprinkle of rain mixed with sunshine, and we were surrounded by the natural beauty of our backyard. Our garden sparkled with twinkle lights, blush buds hung in small glass vases from the trees and heart garland handmade by the kids was strung across our ‘wishing tree.’ It’s amazing how everything fell into place to complete the storybook evening. (Our wedding planner extraordinaire, Keby Enloe, deserves a lot of credit!) Every guest was in awe of our band, which kept us happy on the dance floor, and the flowers beautifully helped create the exact vision I had in my head while planning. Our pictures are a true reflection of the love that was present in every single moment, and we continue to say it was the most perfect night. As the four of us sent a lantern into the night sky with a wish, we felt pure happiness and love. And that really is magical.

Bridal Beauty:

THE NAKED TRUTH B Y M A RY LY N S I M P S O N

Nude is the new red. From muted pinks to deep caramel tones, nude lip colors are making a huge comeback from their ‘90s heyday. The look is also on-trend for a walk down the aisle—nude lips for brides look demure and don’t take attention away from the gown and the bride’s face. But with endless shades of nude, choosing the right lip color that works best for your skin tone can be a bit tricky. Are your lips naturally red with a blue undertone, or do you have olive skin with a yellow undertone? Keeping these and a few other details in mind, you can easily decipher which nude works best for you. Here are some of our favorite nude lip colors matched with the best skin tones for each hue.

OLIVE SKIN:

L’OREAL PARIS COLOUR RICHE EXTRAORDINAIRE LIQUID LIP COLOR Pick a color one shade darker than your natural lip color. Make sure there is a pink undertone in the lip color, as this will help create a more natural feel. Jennifer Lopez and fellow olive-toned celebs have been spotted rocking this lipstick in Nude Ballet on multiple occasions. The color has a pink undertone and still looks incredibly natural. LOREALPARISUSA.COM, DILLARD'S, MACY'S; $10

MEDIUM SKIN TONE:

NYX COSMETICS BUTTER LIPSTICK IN WEST COAST Medium skin tones tend to have a darker outer rim around the lips. One of the best ways to highlight your natural lip color is to pick a lipstick the same shade as your lip. Not only does this technique guarantee your lipstick won’t look chalky, but it gives lips a unified look. Stay away from any colors that have a yellow undertone, and instead choose a salmon color or a hue with a hint of orange. This is a great (and affordable) color that will keep your pout pretty and primed. NYXCOSMETICS.COM, $6

COVER STORY

[SAFE HAVEN COVENANT HOUSE by alexa beattie IT’S DRIZZLING AND THE GROUND IS WET. Or, the temperature has dropped and the ground

is hard, very cold. In the darkness, without shelter, it also is dangerous—especially if you’re only 16. “This is the reality for some children,” says Sue King, executive director of Covenant House Missouri (CHMO), which provides food, beds and transitional housing for the region’s homeless youth. She estimates that each night, between 2,500 and 3,000 St. Louis teens sleep under bridges, on benches or in abandoned buildings. “It’s hard to imagine,” King says, but adds that Covenant’s annual Executive Sleep-Out Nov. 17 gives participants a small glimpse of what that kind of life is like. The nonprofit has hosted the event, which takes place overnight in its parking lot, for the past five years. Not only has it raised awareness about homelessness, but also approximately $750,000 in funds to support its programs. Each participating ‘sleeper’ commits to a $5,000 fundraising goal, which King says allows one young person to stay in CHMO’s Transitional Living Program for six months. In addition to providing a safe and structured environment for up to two years, this program offers education, career development and mental health services. Teens are taught life skills—how to manage a budget, how to apply for and hold down a job, and how to save money. All are required to save 60 percent of any earned income toward rent once they move out. To better address mental health issues, the organization recently instituted a ‘Trauma-Informed’ approach, which views behavior through a lens of trauma and treats people with patience and understanding. “There is hope,” King says. “Cared for in the right way, everyone can heal.” Covenant also runs a street outreach program, collaborating with churches, social workers, community centers and hospitals to locate and ‘scoop up’ destitute teens. “Because children can drop out of school legally at 17, they can fall through the cracks,” King explains. “No one comes looking for them.” The organization can accommodate 20 people, ages 16 to 21, in transitional apartments, and has 20 beds for its 45-day crisis program designed to stabilize new residents. King says family dysfunction usually is the No. 1 reason for youth homelessness, followed by chemical dependency, generational poverty and mental health issues. Contrary to popular belief, it is not just an inner city problem. “Nearly half our young people come from St. Louis County— including cities like Ladue, Kirkwood and Webster Groves,” she says. After touring the facility and hearing personal stories of homelessness, Sleep-Out participants are given a piece of cardboard and are sent out into the parking lot. “Remember,” King says, “It’s November, and the temperature can drop dramatically.” It’s usually 10 o’clock by the time everyone beds down and socializing stops, but King says she never sleeps. “There’s a lot to think about on that cardboard,” she says. “It’s quiet, and—even with all those people around—it’s overwhelmingly lonely.”

[ amuse bouche ] THE SCENE

Lively neighborhood spot serving ‘creative tacos’

THE CHEF/OWNER Gerard LaRuffa

THE PRICES $3-$6 tacos

THE FAVORITES

Southern Fried Tomatoes, Sicilian Kiss, Porky Pig

TO CALL THIS LITTLE KIRKWOOD RESTAURANT a

taqueria would be all wrong. It’s really more of a fastcasual place that serves creative small bites inside tortillas. In fact, very few of its 25 tacos can be linked to traditional Mexican dishes. And that is what makes it so much fun. It’s located inside a former Middle Eastern restaurant that had a large outdoor tent. The new folks have taken that down and instead, diners enjoy their tacos al fresco, overlooking the north end of downtown Kirkwood. I hope they figure out a way to keep that large patio open in winter, since the interior space is not nearly as attractive. One nice touch: an open window counter with a couple of stools outside that makes it feel like a cantina. As for what to order, three tacos ought to fill you, and even if you aren’t a vegetarian, start with the vegetarian options. The Southern Fried Tomatoes ($5) was love at first bite. Local green tomatoes come cornmeal-

battered, fried and dipped in Thai sweet chile sauce. There’s some local goat cheese in there, slivered radish and cilantro. You have to pay close attention if you want to catch all that while you’re eating, since the tacos are maybe three, four bites, total in size. Or you can just savor the experience and not worry about figuring out what you’re eating. Another veggie taco, Sicilian Kiss ($5), was a slice of fried eggplant served up with fresh mozzarella, basil, roasted tomato and fried garlic. It was great. A couple of fish tacos were ho-hum in comparison. Who You Call’n Shrimp ($5) had a couple of small, heavily breaded shrimp accompanied by avocado, slaw, chipotle cream and pepitas. It didn’t have tons of flavor, instead tasting mostly of fried crust. Lake of the Ozarks ($5) was cod with pretty much the same accompaniments, and it, too, had no distinctive flavor. In the meat categories, I recommend Porky Pig ($5), a meaty serving of barbecued and shredded pork with

variety, as often thought), usually coated in cornmeal before frying.

CULINARY PEDIGREE

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES These are made with unripe tomatoes (not a different tomato CREMA A Mexican version of sour cream that is saltier and more sour; it serves to cut the heat of chiles. PEPITAS Widely popular in Mexico, these are soft inner squash seeds, in particular from pumpkins.

[ aftertaste ] » The ‘It’s Greek to Me’ taco was awesome! Others were really good, too. A little pricey, but I would eat there again.

— KEVIN R. OF KIRKWOOD

» It was so nice sitting outside on the big patio, and the walk-up bar where you also can order

is a cool concept not seen many places. The price per taco seemed a little steep, but they come loaded and were unique and tasty combos!

slaw, radish straws and cilantro. The pork was supermoist with good flavor. A beef choice, From Our Seoul ($5), was billed as spicy and promised short rib meat. It came cold, not intentionally I hope, and while the slivers of beef had good texture—kind of crusty on the outside—it was overly dry. The kimchi added a nice fermented tang, but not enough to save the dish for me. In general, I much preferred the flour tortillas here; I found the corn ones too distinctively flavored, sometimes getting in the way of the filling flavors. You can ask for either. All the sides we tasted were good—loved the Borracho Beans, black beans doused with beer and topped by a little cumin-flavored sour cream. You can’t beat them for $2. Same for the Roasted Street Corn Casserole, a generous serving of roasted corn (canned) with lime ‘crema’ that added some richness, and a touch of cayenne for spice.

Two execs at homegrown RONNOCO COFFEE have been named Specialized Instructors by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Kudos to DAN JANSON and DAN PABST, who are now among a select group of about 100 in the world. The pair most recently launched a Black Ice coffee program at Ronnoco that includes cold brew, iced coffee and nitrogeninfused coffee. Ronocco produces coffee under five labels: Seattle Roast, Camellia, Wild Horse Creek, Henderson and Ronocco.

NOURISH MARKET & CAFE in Warson Woods now offers family-

friendly meals via subscription. Owned by Hollyberry Catering, the cafe creates healthy entrees and sides that serve four and come flashfrozen. Owner HOLLY CUNNINGHAM first started catering in 2001 and then opened Nourish in 2015. She has since expanded her storefront into the adjacent space and added the new meal subscription service.

[ tasty thai ]

You have to taste it to believe it. That’s the scoop on Thai ice cream, now served at the new SNOW FACTORY in the U. City Loop. Opened by college student VAN LIU in the former Cheeseology spot, the place specializes in the frozen treat, made to order on a cold board. Ingredients are poured onto the surface, mixed until freezing and spread into a thin layer. This gets rolled up and inserted into a special ‘Hong Kong egg waffle cone’ with folds and pockets perfect for melting ice cream and oozing toppings. Mmm ...

[ stl ‘best of’s’ ]

We know how great our food scene is, and now the world is catching on! USA Today recently named ST. LOUIS DISTILLERY of St. Charles the best craft vodka distillery in the U.S. Pretty impressive! The local company creates Cardinal Sin Vodka, made with tworow malted barley, and Cardinal Sin Starka, a type of traditional Polish, barrel-aged vodka dating to the 15th century. Kudos to distillers GREG DETERS, STEVE HERBERHOLT and BILL SCHROER. Also honored were Pinckney Bend Distillery in New Haven, Missouri (No. 4), Mastermind Vodka in Pontoon Beach, Illinois (No. 7), and Square One Brewery and Distillery in Lafayette Square (nomination).

Local frozen custard emporium TED DREWES has been named the best ice cream in the world (!) by #worldICECREAMindex. The yummy spot makes us proud again, as all frozen treat afficionados salute the U.S., St. Louis and Ted Drewes on this honor. Also proud: loyal fans who voted for them to snag the sweet distinction.

If you like action thrillers, you won’t want to miss this one. Ben Affleck is perfectly suited for his role as an autistic math genius who helps clients untangle complicated bookkeeping. It’s a legit business, sort of, except that his clients range from multimillion dollar corporations and governments to drug cartels and terrorists. One reason the film works so well is the amorality of the character, Chris Wolff ; he has his own code, and it includes murder and mayhem when it comes to dealing with obstacles that get in the way of finishing his assignments. Another reason is the twisted plot, which weaves in and out of Wolff’s complicated childhood growing up as a special-needs child in an itinerant Army family. Best of all, though, is the subtle humor that comes from the character’s inability to connect with others. It doesn’t pander to cheap laughs, instead using Affleck’s deadpan expressions at the most inappropriate times to temper the violence. Anna Kendrick is perfect as a fellow math geek, and John Lithgow, as always, is fun to watch as a CEO who hires Wolff.

BEAUTY from A Z -to-

by megan ortiz

HAIR AND MAKEUP TRENDS CAN CHANGE AS QUICKLY AS THE SEASONS. One day the Kardashians have made contouring all the rage, the next day Kim breaks away and declares she’s all for ‘noncontouring’ and a more natural look in hair and makeup! Keeping up is a challenge. Here’s a quick guide to learning the lingo and popular trends for now (and, we hope, for at least the next few months!).

Four ways to say someone’s hair or makeup is perfect: 1. GIVING ME LIFE: “Your makeup is giving me life!” 2. BEAT/THE BEATDOWN: “Your face is beat!” 3. SLAY: “Your eye shadow slayed last night.” 4. YAAAAS: Simply say, “Yaaaas!”

NAIL CONTOURING: YOU CAN CREATE A LONGER-LOOKING NAIL BY USING A CLEAR OR LIGHT BASE COAT AND THEN PUTTING ONE STROKE OF A DEEP COLOR DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE NAIL. BECAUSE THE DEEPER COLOR DOESN’T GO TO THE SIDES

SQUARELETTO: An extra-long nail style that is squared off at the tip, it’s a variation of the stiletto but not as dangerously sharp at the tip.

ring chandeliers: Tiny, dangling crystals that can be looped through a small hole pierced into the fingernail—another in the long list of this year’s nail trends.

OF THE NAILS, IT GIVES THE ILLUSION OF LONG NAILS.

FOTD: A Face of the Day

photo is not what it sounds like (a picture of your face). It is actually a picture of the eye, lip and face products you used that day to post on social media. All the items get spread out onto the bathroom counter or floor in their original bottles so after you post the picture, your followers can see your favorite brands and types of products.

TAN-TOURING: This is an at-home

method to create semi-permanent makeup. Contour your face with selftanner in places you’d typically apply bronzer. It will give a nice, natural look and will last for days. (Let’s hope you don’t make a mistake!) TERMS COMPILED FROM STYLE.COM, PREVIEW.PH, BEAMLY.COM/STYLE, ALLURE.COM

WHEN YOU DRAW A VERY SHARP LINE OF SHADOW ACROSS THE EYE CREASE TO DEFINE AND ACCENTUATE IT

dupes:

Products on the market that are very similar to the originals, but less expensive. When results are compared, the two are almost indistinguishable.

MAGNETIC MASK:

CUT CREASE:

A new, age-defying facial mask that is thought to date back to a concept Cleopatra embraced thousands of years ago. First, gently rub a cream on the face and when it’s ready to be removed, glide a magnet over the skin’s surface. The mask gravitates to the magnet, pulling away from the face and removing any impurities and dirt. The masks are said to brighten and firm the skin.

face flowers: The term is exactly what it says: Flower petals are attached to the face, neck and lips using an adhesive to create a new look—this one is for the true flower child!

garage doors: This describes wearing a single shade of eye shadow from the eye lid all the way up to the brow bone. It was originally made popular in the ‘80s.

microblading:

Women can fix a poor eyebrow wax job with a permanent fix that uses tattoo technology. A tattooing needle uses eyebrow dye to perfectly match the person’s current color, and after just two visits, the new ‘hair’ strokes will last one to three years.

DOUBLE CLEANSE:

A method of face-washing popularized in Korea. The first step is to use an oil-based cleanser to dissolve oilsoluble makeup, like mascara. Then, a gentle foaming cleanser is applied.

Once you’ve filed and buffed your nails (hologram powder works on both) to their desired shape, apply a base coat of Sally Hensen Salon Gel Polish Base Coat and two layers of gel nail polish. Any color and brand will work. The color of your nails won’t show through, so whether you want to stick with a neutral tone or prefer a neon, it won’t affect your hologram finish. Apply Essie’s hard gel topcoat (a favorite of mine and Kandee Johnson’s!). You will be adding a powder to achieve the hologram effect, and the gel topcoat will allow the powder to stick to your nails. Check out the hologram nail powder sold online at Ocean Nail Supply.

Now apply the hologram powder using the eye shadow sponge. Any eye shadow sponge will do. If you want to go the extra step and check out a nail or beauty supply store, look for a rubber-tipped wand. It will give you that much more precision.

Make sure you seal everything and cover each corner. Hologram nails are not forgiving when it comes to missing a spot. And there you have it! Your psychedelic look is complete.

PRO TIP:

Keep in mind that removing the gel polish and powder is just like removing any other gel manicure. If you don’t want to have it professionally removed by a nail technician, you easily can remove the polish at home. You’ll need to scrape the top of your polish with a nail file and wrap your nails with aluminum foil and cotton balls soaked in nail polish remover.

Both women and men want to look younger, and we often are asked: What’s the best way to tighten up loose or sagging skin on the face, neck or other wrinkle-prone areas? Skin tightening is a new and exciting area in plastic surgery. Minimally invasive, nonsurgical skin tightening devices use radio frequency energy (RF) to reduce loose, sagging and inelastic skin on the face, neck and other parts of the body. Some radio frequency devices apply heat to the surface of the skin with a temperature-controlled wand. Others use micro-needles or a small cannula to apply heat deeper into the skin. The results of the treatment depend on the area treated, the method of heat delivery and the temperature profile in the target tissue. Each of these devices helps stimulate production of new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin and tightens the attachments between the skin and the structures underneath. They enable us to restore tautness and elasticity and make skin look more youthful. We employ several devices for tissue tightening because we believe that no single device on the market is ideally suited for every patient. For instance, some are better for treating early skin laxity in younger patients. Others are better for treating more advanced laxity or laxity associated with deep wrinkles. And still other devices excel at treating particular areas on the body where loose skin is associated with fat. Among the devices used at Ridenour Plastic Surgery are Forma, ThermiTite, Profound RF, and Fractora. Alone or used in combination, these devices can tighten skin on most parts of the body, correct sagging of the jowls and neck, lessen acne scars, slim the tummy and thighs, treat some forms of cellulite, and address other areas of loose skin. The best treatment choice will depend on the patient’s age, skin type, area to be treated, amount of skin laxity and the amount of fat under the skin. Every patient’s situation is different, and it’s important to understand these factors so we can apply the right treatment to produce the results you want. During a private consultation, we will conduct an overall assessment of your situation and help you choose the treatment to best meet your needs and budget.

The appearance of a double chin, loose skin, or the ‘gobbler’ or ‘turkey neck’ that we associate with aging is caused by a combination of factors, including cumulative sun damage, genetics, age, variations in anatomy, muscle banding in the front of the neck, and the amount of fat under the skin. No ‘fix’ is permanent since we continue living and aging even after a procedure is done, but many can be long-lasting and provide years of satisfaction as long as you follow proper skin care. Obviously, the most aggressive and all-encompassing fix is a trip to the operating room to undergo a traditional face-lift, which requires anesthesia. A face-lift can address all issues simultaneously by removing extra fat, imbricating or retightening the structures like the muscle that supports the skin, and re-draping and removing excess skin. A proper, traditional face-lift, even a limited one, requires access to these structures and areas for a lasting effect, which is why some kind of surgical approach is necessary. There used to be no choice but to undergo more aggressive surgery, with all the costs and attendant risks associated with it (infections, anesthesia risk, etc.). But now there are more options with less costly and invasive ways to provide improvement in any or all of the troubling features. Fat can be dissolved, melted or physically removed with things like drugs, lasers, radiofrequency and local liposuction. Skin can be tightened with lasers inserted through a tiny hole under the skin or on the surface with radiofrequency or ultrasound devices that generate heat. Neck bands can be reduced with botulinum carefully placed to prevent muscle contraction and tenting under loose skin in the trouble spots. Depending on the particular challenges facing a patient, any or all of these approaches can be used or combined to attain the desired results. Nothing is absolutely permanent, including a proper face-lift, the more conservative options often can provide surprisingly lasting effects.

The first step in determining whether your vein removal is covered by insurance is to schedule a consultation. Varicose veins may be caused by an underlying, usually inherited, venous reflux also known as backflow. If you have reflux and it causes symptoms such as pain, aching, heaviness, restlessness or cramping, and varicose or spider veins, you may be eligible for insurance coverage. We use microphlebectomy and endovenous laser ablation with a state-of-the-art laser for treatment, both of which are minimally invasive procedures with little or no downtime. Insurance requires you to try conservative treatment first, such as compression stockings or anti-inflammatory meds. We submit to your insurance company for approval, prior to any procedures. Spider veins, which are fine, clustered red, blue or purple lines often on the thighs, inner knees or ankles (but can also be found anywhere on the body) are not medically significant, but they can have a dramatic effect on people’s self-esteem and lifestyle. Spider vein treatments typically take three to five treatments and are best started in the fall and early winter so your legs are ready for spring and summer. These are treated with injections, sclerotherapy or a laser. We do recommend compression stockings for a short time, but there are no restrictions on activity. Regarding your sunspots, those can be treated with a laser very effectively. At your initial consultation, we will evaluate your blemishes to assess if you are a good candidate. We require a clearance from your dermatologist prior to treatments. We use the Astanza Ruby laser, which is highly effective for removing sun and age spots on the face and body. After the treatment, the spots may darken and take several weeks to flake off. Typically is takes one to two treatments, occasionally more, occurring about six weeks apart to allow your skin to heal. We advise everyone to limit sun exposure and use a high-quality sunscreen, preferably containing zinc. Unprotected sun exposure can cause re-pigmentation of areas. Most pigmented lesions can achieve complete removal after an adequate number of sessions. Some small lesions, such as freckles or age spots, may take a single treatment to remove. No recovery time is necessary.

The answer is, definitely not! Facial rejuvenation starts with your skin. Botox and filler for wrinkles and medical skin care to improve the skin’s quality and texture will wipe decades away. All skin care is not the same. Medical skin care causes true cell turnover and can stimulate more collagen production, suppress pigment cells and improve pore size. There is true science, research and data behind medical skin care. Over-the-counter beauty skin care products cannot contain medical additives, but Dr. Koo’s products can and are controlled by the FDA as prescription products that are truly effective. We can help your skin look radiant by eliminating sunspots and reducing the size of your pores, which will remove years of damage and wrinkles. My latest noninvasive intervention is Kybella injections under the chin to thin out a ‘fat neck.’ This nonsurgical procedure takes less than an hour and will leave your skin smooth and natural looking, with little to no downtime. Kybella injections use a natural fat-dissolving medication that is extremely effective, safe and FDA approved. The combination of medical skin care, Botox, filler and Kybella can keep you refreshed and natural looking. It is all about early intervention and maintenance. Seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon who understands anatomy can keep you looking natural and enhance your unique features without distortion.

eye care associates of st.louis I HAVE LONG CONSIDERED HAVING LASIK SURGERY AND UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A NEW DEVELOPMENT. HOW IS IT IMPROVED OVER THE PREVIOUS ONE AND IS IT SAFE?

The newest, fastest and most accurate laser system in this country is called WaveLight®. As with the old system, it is comprised of a femtosecond laser that creates the LASIK flap, and an excimer laser that corrects your individual prescription. But what’s new and better is that the WaveLight System provides three treatment options that allow true customization of your LASIK procedure: wavefront-optimized, wavefront-guided, or topographically guided LASIK. Those of us who specialize in refractive surgery are very excited about topographically guided LASIK, which has been available in Europe for many years, but was just recently approved for use in this country by the FDA. Topographically guided LASIK increases the accuracy of our outcomes and allows us to do things with the laser that we could only dream about before – such as treating damaged or irregular corneas. We did a study of 2,000 cases, comparing our previous laser system using wavefront-guided technology to the new WaveLight System using wavefront- optimized technology. There was a slight advantage to the WaveLight laser for regular prescriptions, but a significant advantage for highly nearsighted or farsighted patients. In addition, the new WaveLight System provides greater accuracy for the treatment of high astigmatism, and has a wider optical zone, which lessens the risk of glare after LASIK. Safety has always been my highest priority. The WaveLight System has new safeguards built right in to the software, allowing for a safer, more comfortable procedure.

WHY DO THEY SAY ATTITUDE AND OUTLOOK ARE SO IMPORTANT FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO BE SATISFYING AND PERMANENT?

Our outlook determines the outcome of everything .... If you believe you will succeed most of the time you will. Conversely, if you believe you will fail most of the time you will. This is why we feel it is so important to understand why you want to lose weight and then set a realistic expectation of what that accomplishment will produce in your life. Understanding yourself and your relationship to food are critical to your success. Some of us say, if I just lose 20 pounds I will feel so much better. The word to look at more closely is ‘feel’. Does this mean you believe losing weight will make you more attractive to the opposite sex, and that if you attract the right person your life will be ‘happy’ and you will feel good? Successful and permanent weight loss is a function of understanding what you are hungry for. Is it food, love, self-esteem, peace or just simply to reduce stress? By creating a vision of weight loss based on an awareness of why we overeat, we can find fulfillment in a more healthy way. When the entire system of mind and body achieves what is really desired, normal eating often falls into place automatically. It is only by knowing yourself and living a fulfilled life that you will be able to maintain lifelong healthy habits and permanent weight loss.

I’M LOOKING FOR THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY FOR IMPROVING SKIN QUALITY, INCLUDING ACNE SCARRING, WRINKLES AND SKIN LAXITY. IS THERE SOMETHING YOU RECOMMEND? We come into the world with perfect skin—the narrative of what goes in and what goes on with our bodies. How we manage our perfect skin with lifestyle choices determines the story line. If you think of photographs of the most interesting faces in the world, the faces that draw us in have great story lines. When Leonardo DaVinci taught his students to paint faces, he instructed them to begin with structure, apply form, and then develop the character. At Nouveau, we want to help you manage your character. Healthy skin is radiant, and radiant means supple, clear and smooth skin that reflects more light. It is rarely just one factor that determines radiance, but rather a collection of lifestyle choices, skin care practices and treatments, which together prevent or repair elastosis, remodel collagen and regenerate volume. We recommend our newest technology, Infini. It is fractionated radiofrequency, energy delivered by gold-plated microneedles to the deepest dermis for the stimulation of elastin and collagen production. Infini is used to refine the texture of the skin; reduce lines, wrinkles and large pores; tighten folds and lax skin; and repair acne and other scarring. Results are dramatic and consistent, downtime is minimal, and pain is manageable during the procedure and minimal to none post-treatment. The average recovery time is one to four days. More than one treatment may be necessary based on the condition of the skin and the desired results.

with it. The five-bedroom house with five full bathrooms and two half baths was perfect for their family of five. “The lot itself is high up, and I wanted land for landscaping,” Qureshi says. “My wife fell in love with the kitchen, and we both loved the design and layout. It’s very welcoming, beautiful and warm.” Sitting on 1.48 acres of land in a cul de sac, the two-story house was the Qureshis’ home for about four years. They loved entertaining indoors and outdoors. “My favorite place was the backyard,” Qureshi says. “We spent quite a bit of time grilling and entertaining. I had plans to reshape the backyard with serious landscaping, although part of me loved the simplicity.” Inside, the kitchen has a nice layout and detailing the couple had not seen in other homes they toured. And even though the basement was not finished when they purchased it, Qureshi designed and finished a large space that the family used often. “We completed part of the basement to accommodate our children and their friends,” he says. “They spent a lot of time there. The area still could be doubled. I started with a nice bar and game room for adults and children. I was going to build a wine cellar but didn’t have the time. Our kids really liked the setup.” The house, which was built in 2011 and is in the Ladue School District, also offers a location the Qureshi family couldn’t pass up. “Public and private schools are within walking distance,” he says. “The neighborhood is quiet and populated with highly educated and accomplished families. In addition to the location, we loved the lot size, quality of construction and just the comfort the home provides.” For much of the last two years, Qureshi was commuting back and forth from New York for his job, but he didn’t like missing so much time with his 15- and 7-year old sons and his 12-year-old daughter. “Every moment in the house was precious,” he says. “We were in tears when we decided to move, but I had to move to New York City for work and living apart was getting difficult. Commuting with growing kids just became too hard.”

in families to pick their pumpkins. It was simple and free. Over time, it has evolved into a fall wonderland for families, complete with corn mazes, straw tunnels and slides. “We’ve always sold and grown pumpkins,” marketing manager Anne Thies says. “It has gotten bigger and bigger over time, and since we offer the unique aspect of being within city limits, it allows people to get the farm experience without having to drive far.” While Thies Farm opened in 1885 at 4215 N. Hanley Road, it has since expanded to locations in St. Charles and Maryland Heights. Pumpkinland takes over the Maryland Heights and North Hanley locations in October, which allows visitors to immerse themselves in farm fun. “I like the straw tunnels the best,” Thies says. “I must have been braver when I was younger than I am now, however. I need a flashlight in there these days or I get claustrophobic!” She is part of the sixth generation of Thies family members helping keep the family business thriving. Her father and uncle currently own the three properties. She and her brother help run parts of it—sometimes in creative ways. Once her brother shaped the corn maze into the phrase, Let’s Go, Blues! “We aren’t usually that creative,” Thies admits, “but there are always a lot of dead ends in the mazes.” The corn maze isn’t usually planted until early August. It is a quick growing variety of corn, and when it reaches 5 feet tall, Thies says they walk through it and step down the stalks to create the maze. Soon after, the path is mowed and cleared for visitors. Pumpkinland is open through Oct. 31, with plenty of reasons to make a visit. The corn cannon is back, and if visitors hit a target, they can win a T-shirt allowing them to boast about conquering it. Powered by compressed air, the cannons allow guests to launch ears of corn at a series of targets. Some activities like the corn cannon, face painting, pumpkin decorating and pony rides are available only on Saturdays and Sundays and incur an extra charge. The search for the best pumpkin lasts all month, but late-October visitors get the added bonus of larger pumpkins. “The later you go, the bigger the pumpkins grow,” Thies says. “We call the 200-pounders Big Macs, and we offer them at a cheaper price as the month winds down. It’s always fun watching people try to get them in their cars.” Tickets to visit Pumpkinland are $7 for children and $4.75 for adults.

HOMEWORK]

DEAR HOMEWORK,

My husband and I recently moved to a classic ’70s ranch in Creve Coeur. We’ve trimmed the interior down so we can figure out direction there, but the front of the house needs more than a trim. The overgrown shrubs are hiding a handsome home. I really want window boxes; they’re so easy to maintain on a ranch. The front door, circle drive and lawn are begging for attention, too. Help! Sincerely, —TIME FOR A TRIM

DEAR TIME FOR A TRIM,

To begin with, the bushes in front of your garage wing are obviously out of control. I suggest starting over with the landscaping close to the house. Keep things low and trimmed with a few well-placed, vertical, evergreen accents. On long, low ranch houses, tall bushes make the house look even lower and longer (if they don’t hide it completely as they do here.) The window boxes you desire will work fine here. From the photos you sent, I’d guess the façade gets good sun, so I would suggest planting the boxes with bright red geraniums. You mention the idea of improving the circle driveway. I would suggest creating a wider drop-off area near the front door, with a surface of pavers. I would further highlight this area with a low brick wall topped with a clipped evergreen hedge and corner brick piers with luxuriously planted urns. This will make this section of the façade look taller from the downhill approach. Then, make sure to buy good hedge clippers! Thanks for the educational example, —HOMEWORK

Melted Crayon Pumpkin

Acorn Art

This looks great on white pumpkins, but will work on orange ones, too. Unpeel the paper from crayons and place them on top of a pumpkin. Then take a hair dryer and hold it over the crayons until they completely melt. They will create a colorful, almost tie-dyed appearance on the pumpkin. It’s also fun watching them melt and drip down the sides!

Go for an adventure outside and find some acorns. Use small paint brushes to create little masterpieces. Kids could paint faces or pumpkins. For younger kids, have them dunk the acorns in paint. They can then roll the acorns around on a piece of paper for a colorful fall picture.

Pinecone Bird Feeder

Leaf Painting

Have your little ones cover a large pinecone in peanut butter. They will love the mess all over their hands. Once they have it completely covered, have them roll the pinecone in a bowl of bird seed. When all the peanut butter is covered with seeds, attach a string and hang outside near a window where they can watch the birds enjoying the treat they made.

To make a beautiful, textured painting, find a big leaf. Have kids use fall colors to gently paint all over one side of the leaf. With a white sheet of paper nearby, press the painted side of the leaf onto the paper and carefully lift back up. You’ll be left with a masterpiece worthy of framing.

Glow-in-the-Dark Treat Bags

Leaf Placemats

Cover a gift bag with glow-in-the-dark duct tape. Use black tape to create eyes, a mouth and nose for a skeleton face. Kids can use the bags for trick-or-treating.

Instead of raking leaves into piles and jumping in, take kids on a hunt to pick out the prettiest leaves they can find. Once they find enough, glue the leaves onto an 11x17 sheet of construction paper. Laminate their work of art and use it as a placemat throughout the fall.

Candy Corn Footprints Cover a piece of cardboard in black acrylic paint. Once it is dry, take your child’s foot and paint three stripes on the bottoms: paint the heel area white, the middle orange, and the balls of the feet and toes yellow. Press the foot onto the black surface for a memorable keepsake. You can add googly eyes and a smiley face to the white portion if you want to turn them into candy corn ghosts.
