In this issue’s parenting column, Dr. Tim bemoans the state of childhood today—too programmed, structured and technology-heavy, which, he points out, stunt curiosity and creativity. Yes, it’s enriching for kids to partake in violin lessons, dance classes and select soccer teams, but not at the expense of plain old free time. And I guess some young parents out there agree with him. When my daughter first told me she didn’t like her kids watching TV, I thought, Well, there goes my babysitter! And for their birthdays, she would request things like bicycles and easels instead of a Nintendo DS or a Leap Pad. I thought my grandkids would be deprived, but now I realize they were actually being enriched. Passive tech toys and 24-7 activities for kids take them away from unstructured play with things like sidewalk chalk, building blocks and scooters—and that does them a disservice. The architects, engineers and artists of tomorrow need to practice today! And we might not want them to turn into the grown-ups we all know (or are), who can’t be more than an arm’s length away from iPhones, iPads and other mobile Internet devices.

talk [towns] by bill beggs jr.

First things first: Nobody’s killing Bambi’s mother here. Deer overpopulation increases the chance of serious auto accidents, which can kill people—and often the animal in the headlights, too. Ballwin city officials Oct. 8 voted 6 to 1 to allow bow-hunting of deer on private land of at least an acre. An ordinance had been in the works since January, when a startled deer slammed a woman to the pavement in an Ellisville parking lot, critically injuring her. (She has since fully recovered.) State conservation department officials estimate the deer population is as dense as 60 per square mile in the vicinity; nationally, hunting organizations call deer density the ‘million-dollar question’. Well, how many is too many? Experts say more than 20 per square mile can be a problem. Ballwin exceeds that by a factor of three. Even if you’re not a gearhead, you might want to head out to Kemp Auto Museum. The museum has on exhibit a handful of Crosley autos, arguably the country’s first compact car, which was both ahead of its time and right on time. Production started before America entered World War II, and the car was popular in an era of gas rationing because it got 50 mpg! Macy’s at Chesterfield Mall has a Crosley on display, which is particularly apt since the car was intended for sale at department stores like Montgomery Ward, and designed so that it could exit through a store’s pedestrian doors. How big is it? Think somewhere between a Prius and a roller skate. (We exaggerate.) Hurry: The Crosleys hit the road Nov. 3. Two moms from Creve Coeur are officially TV stars, what with the recent premiere on the Nick Jr. network of

of the

their show MFF: Mom Friends Forever. Judi Diamond and Kate Frisina-White managed to parlay a lively and loony video blog into a show about their lives shopping for groceries (or shoes) and trying to talk to kids about, you know. We wish these winsome, wacky women the best of luck; here’s hoping the show gets picked up for more episodes beyond the 20 slated so far. Warning: Do not have a mouthful of liquid as you view the teaser for the show at lipstickandlaundry.com. Kate and Judi are not liable if you spew coffee all over your computer screen at any point during the 1-minute segment. John Hessel just missed a hat trick… by one year. Hessel, city attorney for Kirkwood, was named recently as St. Louis Best Lawyers Municipal Lawyer of the Year for 2013. We don’t know how close he was to being chosen last year for the honor, but he also topped the poll for 2011. Hessel also is city attorney in Florissant and assists with representation for Crestwood and Wildwood. He is a partner and management committee member at Lewis Rice. While we wonder where Hessel finds time for non-lawyerly pursuits, we also hope his accountant is making sure all that mileage between municipalities is covered. Don Goble is sort of a shop teacher for the 21st century: He’s the broadcast technology instructor at Ladue Horton Watkins High School. Though it’s not likely you’ll see Goble on television, except perhaps in student projects, you can find him in print. His perspectives on the SchoolTube phenomenon appear in TIME Techland, in an article titled Lights, Camera, Learn: SchoolTube Strives to Be YouTube for K-12 Education. While that itself is quite the feather in his cap, Goble also was chosen as one of nine leaders in education

technology to be in the spotlight at the 2013 Midwest Education Technology Conference. Cooperating School Districts recently announced its first METC Midwest Spotlight Educators, and Goble was chosen from among educators in the 60—count ’em; 60— Midwestern districts. All’s well, that sorta ends well. A monstrous U-Gas station and convenience sore—oops, store; honest typo—is soon to open at McKnight and Manchester in Rock Hill, if it hasn’t already. The antebellum stone Presbyterian church that stood on the northeast corner was taken apart and is to be rebuilt where there’s relative peace and quiet, a Warren County winery. And the c. 1841 Fairfax House has moved to a different spot on U-Gas property. Instead of facing Manchester Road to the south, set back a few hundred feet, it faces McKnight Road to the west, so close you could cut the grass in a couple of passes with a push mower. For some time the Greek Revival structure had waited on a flatbed truck. Before its move, the side facing away from Manchester, out of motorists’ sight, had badly needed scraping and painting. We bet that, by spring, it will make quite a pretty postcard. Yeah, but will the trains run on time? OK, that’s it for the cynicism. In unfolding development plans for St. Louis Union Station, passenger trains may return. Union Station didn’t quite make it as a mall in the mid-1980s. The landmark is a tourist attraction for its architecture alone, but what then? Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM) topper Bob O’Loughlin thinks excursion trains could help boost the station’s image and return it a bit to its original purpose, perhaps including a rail transportation museum.

O’Loughlin’s company has a good track record: LHM is behind the renovation of the storied Cheshire Inn. There’s been plenty of activity in U. City parks, and there’s more to come. Sunday, Oct. 14, the community dedicated a new playground at Flynn Park, which is adjacent to Flynn School. Flynn staff, parents and kids raised nearly $40,000, in addition to grants from the county, city and Washington U., much of it coinage collected by beverage entrepreneurs. Schoolkids started operating lemonade stands for the cause in the spring of 2011. On Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to noon, Heman Park will be a collection point for an area-wide electronics and appliance recycling drive. In the parking lot near the community center they’ll accept everything from computer monitors and keyboards to cellphones and TVs—and while they might turn down the kitchen sink, they will take your old dishwasher. Uber supermodels like 2011 Webster Groves grad Karlie Kloss don’t get to strut the world’s runways without a hue and cry about their overall negative impact on body image for young women. (Ever since she was in my son Henry’s church youth group, biddies hoped she’d help herself to a few extra cookies. She’s always been an impossibly beautiful beanpole. Sigh.) Kloss, 20, face and body of the Target + Neiman Marcus collaboration slated to debut Dec. 1, now finds herself in the midst of controversy for artful, yet NSFW, photos. The photographer is not happy about a preemptive defensive move by Japanese magazine Numèro, which airbrushed her bony ribs and breastbone to smooth things over before publication. Kloss told Vogue: “You have to grow a thick skin.”

[ TT Trivia ] Who was Horton Watkins, of Ladue Horton Watkins High School fame?

Forsyth [School by tony di martino

It may not be easy being green, but it can be fun—and educational, if you’re a student at Forsyth School. “Sustainability education isn’t new at Forsyth,” says head of school Michael Vachow. “We’ve always been known for innovative academic programs combined with relevant, hands-on learning activities. Our students are facing an increasingly complex world that demands creative solutions to urgent problems, many of them environmental. We want them to be prepared.” The school has long had a thriving recycling program, and faculty at every grade level, from pre-kindergarden through six, tackle environmental issues in their classes. Sixth-grade math teacher Susan Zareh, for example, assigns a ‘green home’ project every year. “Each student designs a floor plan of an energy-efficient house and then builds a model, calculating square footage and labor costs,” she explains. “Kids learn best by doing and experiencing. They enjoy applying what they learn to real-life situations.” So, when Zareh won a Teacher of Distinction grant from Independent Schools of St. Louis, the school combined it with a financial gift from the Class of 2012 and installed solar panels on the south roof of the school gym. Forsyth leases the panels from Brightergy Solar Solutions, a solar development firm in Webster Groves. Brightergy staff also worked with Forsyth faculty and EarthWays Center, the educational arm of Missouri Botanical Garden, on a sustainability curriculum that will debut this school year. The solar panels reduce the amount of energy required from the grid system, saving the school money, and also serve as a powerful teaching tool. “You can tie sustainability into any of the disciplines in developmentally appropriate ways,” explains third-grade teacher Christine Torlina, founder of the school’s Go Green Forsyth! committee. “Kids ages 3 to 5 can learn about the sun’s importance and ways to conserve water and stop littering. Older students can discuss renewable versus nonrenewable energy sources, create graphs from data generated by the panels, and analyze Forsyth’s overall energy use. The educational possibilities are endless!” The entire Forsyth community has responded enthusiastically to the curriculum and the solar panels, which prospective parents can view at a Nov. 3 open house. “Sustainability education brings math and other subjects to life and lets kids know their choices matter,” Zareh says. “It also inspires them to pursue careers in the sciences.” A former student is now at Stanford University majoring in engineering, a choice he relates directly to inspiration he received at Forsyth; other students have expressed interest in becoming scientists, inventors and LEED-certified architects. “Kids love to learn, they like action and they like doing the right thing,” Torlina says. “It’s our job to make learning as engaging and meaningful as possible. We’re trying to instill a sense of personal responsibility and empower them to make a positive difference in the world. Giving kids the best start in life has always been our goal at Forsyth, and that holds true now more than ever.”

bookshelf ECLECTIC READERS] by rebecca koenig

About the club| Cyndy Kennedy would like it to be known that the Ecletric Readers held its first meeting several months before Oprah initiated her book club in 1996. “We were going to read more classics,” Kennedy says, “but once she started giving us recommendations on all these other books, we sort of incorporated them.” The group, originally called the Classy Readers, still tries to read two or three literary classics each year, and has tackled works including Les Misérables, Great Expectations and Middlemarch. The dozen current members meet monthly at different homes, select books by consensus and are allowed to opt out of one read a year. They occasionally take field trips related to what they’re reading, and have visited battlefields in Franklin, Tenn., and Harry Truman’s presidential library in Independence, Mo. About the book| Newlywed Englishwoman Claire Pendleton discovers forbidden romance and Chinese culture in The Piano Teacher, a novel by Janice Lee. The book explores the horrors of the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong during World War II and the intrigues of British colonial society on the island 10 years later.

I could’nt identify with any of the characters. I kept thinking that because they were all so unprincipled and permissive, lacking a positive moral compass in their lives, they would never be able to find hope, peace or even satisfaction in their existence. I found it all to be very depressing. – Carla Britton

>> One reason The Piano Teacher was of interest to our group was because it was about a WWII theater that we’d not read about before. Historically, I found it intriguing, but also learned I didn’t particularly like any of the characters. – Ellen Schmidt >> Historical fiction is my favorite genre, but when the setting is the cruelty of war, the fictional people only highlight that there were real victims whose lives were torn asunder. – Carol Barrington

Kids big and small are gathering their treats and perfecting their tricks. Halloween is one of the most joyful, light-hearted celebrations, and chances are you’ve observed it pretty much the same way all your life. The Town & Style staff has come up with a few ideas to help you mix it up a little. See if any of them lights your jack-o’-lantern. Host not-so-scary movie night for your kiddos with Halloween favorites like Hocus Pocus, Casper, Nightmare Before Christmas or even a Scooby-Doo marathon. These classic flicks are funny, not frightening!

Halloween!

Let’s be honest: no kid can—or should—eat 30 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Make those treats extra special and donate them to a worthy cause. Delta Dental Health Theatre’s Great Candy Exchange Nov. 3 collects extra Halloween candy and sends it to troops overseas.

Carving 101: Don’t cut your pumpkins until about a week before Halloween. Use Vaseline around the cut edges and keep pumpkins cool (even during the daytime) to prevent rot. Finally, use battery-powered, flameless tea lights to keep your jack-o’-lantern grinning safely all night.

Add to the seasonal ambience with orange and gold mums at the door and baskets of neon Osage Oranges. This is the time they drop from trees (including some on Wydown Boulevard just east of Big Bend Boulevard). Gather and hang with string to dry so they don’t split open. Who says it’s too early for Christmas? Save packs of M&M’s, Skittles, licorice and more to

Candy is dandy, but too much is bad for their teeth. So encourage the kiddos to collect canned goods for a food bank instead. Or how about gathering old eyeglasses for Sight Night, an organization that repairs, cleans and delivers them to Third World countries?

Pick up small terracotta pots and have kids decorate them with paint and Halloween stickers. Then

plant the pumpkin seeds left over from carving. Place the pots on a windowsill, water and wait for spouts. Who knew Halloween could be educational?

You can’t go wrong with any of the books published by Kiplinger, a Washington-based financial information service. I wholeheartedly recommend Kiplinger’s Practical Guide to Your Money, now in its third edition, and Retire WorryFree, now in its fifth edition. The books are easy to follow, well-researched and extremely reliable. Practical Guide to Your Money covers everything a family needs to know about planning a secure financial future, hitting major milestones such as renting or buying a home, purchasing life insurance, and paying for your kids’ education. Retire Worry-Free focuses on how to calculate how much you’ll need so you won’t outlive your money. Both books give solid advice on how to keep more of what you earn and make it grow, so you can enjoy it and pass it on.

[ Yes, that was Irish recording artist Sinead O’Connor at the Target in Brentwood earlier this month. O’Connor shopped for luggage, according to Dave Hinson of the Killer Vintage music store, who accompanied her. O’Connor flew to St. Louis from Ireland to meet her idol Chuck Berry, but a rendezvous never took place. She stayed at the Moonrise Hotel and told owner Joe Edwards, “St. Louis is my favorite American city.” ]

[ In its first week, Tony La Russa’s One Last Strike reached the top 10 in the hardcover nonfiction category on major best-seller lists: New York Times (No. 7), Wall Street Journal (No. 5), Publisher’s Weekly (No. 4). Left Bank Books has sold more than 4,000 copies. In recent years, Left Bank Books’ top seller has been Eric Greitens’ The Heart and the Fist, with 17,000 copies sold. ] [ When The Southern Illinoisan featured Barry Commoner’s residence at 25 Crestwood Drive on June 15, 1970, it noted piles of Time magazines and Village Voice newspapers in the Claverach Park home. Commoner, the researcher and activist who died last month in New York at the age of 95, read the news and also made it: he appeared that year on Time’s cover as “the Paul Revere of Ecology.” His landmark ‘baby tooth study’ discovered radioactive Strontium-90 in the teeth of area youth and led to a partial ban on atmospheric nuclear testing. Commoner also lived at 50 Arundel Place in Clayton where, as kids, fellow Town & Style columnist Judy Goodman and Commoner’s children were permitted to draw on the walls. ]

[ Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Cay Johnston lauds Ken Thomas of University City in his latest book, The Fine Print: How Big Companies Use ‘Plain English’ to Rob You Blind. Johnston cites research by Thomas, a University of Missouri-St. Louis political scientist, showing state and local governments spend about $70 billion a year in taxpayer money to subsidize factories, office buildings and more. ]

[ After working for 13 years in downtown St. Louis on Lucas Avenue, Sharon Lee Tucci is moving back to the Central West End. Talent Plus International, the talent and entertainment agency founded by Tucci in 1977, is relocating to the top floor of the Congress Building at Union and Pershing avenues at the end of this month. ]

diamond ] & jewelry brokers by rebecca koenig Rain on the wedding day would be a disappointment for most couples. But not if they purchased an engagement ring at Diamond & Jewelry Brokers. A family-owned business since its establishment in 1978, the jeweler offers a Pray for Rain promotion, providing a full refund of the cost of a couple’s engagement ring if it rains at least 1 inch at Lambert Airport on the day they are wed. It’s not the only thing that stands out at Diamond & Jewelry Brokers, says owner Michael Haddad. He joined his father and brothers in the business in 2007, determined to help the company sparkle. “I wanted to make things different tangibly,” he says. “Every jeweler says, ‘I’m better than the next guy,’ so I had to come up with real differences.” So in 2008, Diamond & Jewelry Brokers joined the elite Independent Jewelers Organization, which is composed of independent jewelers that adhere to high ethics, service and selection standards. Only 850 companies worldwide are members. “It’s a fantastic thing for our business and our customers,” Haddad says. “Here, you’re dealing with real jewelers. It’s a true, full-service store, which is one

Alex, nahed, michael, rocky and anthony haddad photo by thomas warwick

of the requirements of being a master jeweler.” These services include appraisal, custom design and on-site jewelry repair. Diamond & Jewelry Brokers sells an exclusive diamond, the Hearts & Arrows Ideal Cut of Perfection, the same round cut as the famous Hearts on Fire stones, Haddad explains. “It is a ball of fire. It’s an unbelievable stone,” he says. “You can own the finest cut in the world but pay the same as for other diamonds,” thanks to a De Beers partnership. Haddad and his brothers travel to Antwerp, Belgium, personally to select stones for their clients. “We look at thousands of stones in a few-day period, bringing out the world’s finest stones before they’re released,” Haddad says of his trips to the diamond capital of the world. Diamond & Jewelry Brokers also has its own iPhone app, The Vow, which allows users to look at 3-D images of engagement rings. A new promotion this year, Wish for a White Christmas, promises to add excitement to winter jewelry purchases. If it snows at least 2 inches on Dec. 25, all customers who purchase jewelry between Black Friday and Dec. 18 will receive a refund.

Diamond & Jewelry Brokers is located at 473 Lafayette Center. For more information, call 636.391.6622 or visit diamondaa.com Cover design by sarah gibson

An Interview with Bridal Designer By Suzy Bacino | Photos provided by House of Zavozina

T&S | You are a Russian-born designer living in Tennessee—how long have you been in Nashville? MI | Since 2003. I came as an exchange student and ended up staying!

T&S | Did you design your own wedding gown? MI | No, but that was definitely where it all started. I’m actually going to re-do my wedding next year—on our five-year anniversary!

T&S | What part of Russia are you from? MI | Siberia.

T&S | Then you can design your own dress? MI | (Laughing) Yes! But also when I got married, I was trying to please a lot of people and now this time we can do exactly what we want.

T&S | Have you always been interested in clothing design? MI | Yes. I made clothing for my Barbie dolls and then in middle school, for myself. I had a tiny T&S | Do you have dual citizenship with Russia? MI | I just passed my test to be a U.S. citizen! Russia didn’t used to allow dual citizenship, but they little sewing machine! just changed that, so I am excited about it. T&S | Did you come to the states to study clothing design? MI | No, I was going to be an interpreter. I came here to improve my English. I ended up meeting this wonderful family and they let me in. I was 18. I’d honestly dreamed of moving to America and I even wrote a song about it when I was 7! T&S | What school did you attend in Nashville? MI | Free Will Baptist Bible College. T&S | When did you start studying fashion? MI | I didn’t! I have a masters in business from Tennessee State, but in 2006 I launched my ready-to-wear collection, so I was making jackets and cocktail dresses. T&S | Did you study business with the idea that you were going to run your own clothing line? MI | Yes, but I really didn’t know what was going to happen. I thought I could always work in corporate America or go back to Russia. T&S | How’d you meet your husband? MI | I met him when I was 21, and we got married when I was 24. T&S | And then you decided you wanted to design wedding gowns? MI | No, actually I was thinking, I’ll never do bridal. I’d heard all about these crazy brides and I didn’t want to be a part of that industry. But when I got married, I realized it wasn’t the brides who were crazy, it was the people in the industry! They weren’t really listening to the brides or giving them enough options—and I thought, I can do that!

T&S | Tell me about your first line. MI | In 2006 I had 12 jackets, only jackets. T&S | Never having studied fashion design, wasn’t a coat or jacket particularly difficult? MI | I was really good at geometry and even thought maybe I’d be an architect at one time. I guess I’m just good at piecing things together. Since I was a kid I was always making things so I just knew how to do it! T&S | Then you expanded? MI | Yes, I started to make cocktail dresses and tops, but it was tough to get a profit by having things made locally…who wants to spend $500 on a top? Some of my pieces are made overseas, some in Nashville. T&S | Tell me about your bridal line. MI | I started with seven dresses. I’d never made a wedding gown before. I flew home to Russia for the first time in eight years and worked with my mom and my mom’s friend. I was home only a week, but I worked all day long, every day on these dresses. We made seven dresses in seven days. I packed them up and brought them to Nashville and had a trunk show at the Governor’s Club—and they went over really well. T&S | What is your ideal bride? MI | Confident. I like when she knows what she wants but is open to suggestions. What we don’t like is when people have no opinions! Sometimes I can tell what the person might like by looking at the style of her ring. T&S | What is the price range for your gowns? MI | Most of the dresses stay in the $2,500-to-$4,500 range. I like things with different options, like an overlay or little jacket to give you some different ways to wear the dress. october 24, 2012

Party

ou’ve got your bridal gown; now it’s time to dress your maids in something special. If you think about it, the bridesmaids are the glittering accessories of your wedding party. They’ll enhance the ceremony, decorate the dance floor and be a general testament to your good taste! Make the girls happy with options. Today’s lineup of bridesmaids dresses is often a collective of color: the same hue in varying styles. Or if you go with a singular style, you’re the one with the choices to make. It’ll be a challenge to pick, but that’s where the fun is!

It took two tacky sweaters to introduce Carolyn Zimmer and Christopher Burnes. The respective Ladue High and De Smet alums were both living in New York in December 2005 when they returned to St. Louis and met at a mutual friend’s ugly sweater holiday party. Christopher didn’t get Carolyn’s number that night and had to track her down to ask her out once they got back to the Big Apple. They’ve been together since their first date and were married May 19. The couple’s daughter Olivia served as flower girl at the Ladue Chapel ceremony, which was followed by a formal dinner reception at the Missouri Athletic Club. Cocktail hour and late-night snacks included a few St. Louis favorites, and Carolyn reports that even her skeptical New York friends enjoyed the toasted ravioli and Imo’s pizza. “They think New York slices are the best, but they have no clue,” she laughs. A live band played Motown hits. “Everyone was on the dance floor until midnight. It was so packed,” Carolyn says. “The whole night was fabulous. It was gone in the blink of an eye.” She and Christopher, who is vice president at MTS Health Investors private equity firm, loved their honeymoon in Bora Bora, where they swam with sharks in open water. “It was so exotic, halfway around the world,” Carolyn says. Another couple there who offered to take their picture turned out to be from St. Louis—and were married on the same day! october 24, 2012

She almost didn’t believe it. Surrounded by family and friends, Julie Wolz walked down the aisle toward the love of her life, Justin Knight. It was the dream wedding she’d always hoped for but never thought possible. “I would have postponed getting married or settled for getting married in a courthouse if it wasn’t for The Gifted Wedding,” Julie says. “This isn’t something I had to have, especially since we couldn’t afford it, but every girl wants the dream wedding. To have that opportunity is the biggest thing ever. We worked so hard for everything, and they made something possible that we could not have done on our own.” Julie and Justin Knight met in 2009 after connecting through an online dating site. They seemed perfect for each other, but each had reservations. Julie was a young mother of two who had her first child at 15, and Justin became a quadriplegic after an accident in his early 20s. “I was apprehensive about the kids at first because I never dated anyone with kids,” Justin says. “But we enjoyed talking so much and she really wanted to see me, so I went for it. I fell head over heels for her, but it took me a little longer because I know my situation was rough to adapt to...but I couldn’t stay away too long.” On the first anniversary of their first date, Justin proposed. But he also had another surprise for his new fiancee; Justin had written a letter to The Gifted Wedding, a local nonprofit that helps couples facing difficult circumstances plan dream weddings they could not afford otherwise. Local wedding vendors lend a hand for the big day, donating everything from the venue to photo by CLARK WOOLSEY PHOTOGRAPHY the invitations. When they heard the board chose them, Julie and Justin were thrilled. “I know Justin loved the wedding just as much I did, but he viewed this as the biggest gift he could possibly give me,” she says. “The Gifted Wedding gave him the opportunity to show me how much he loves me.” The two married on July 29, 2011 at Kemp Auto Museum. Julie’s 14-year-old son Austin walked her down the aisle with her 11-year-old daughter Isabel just a few steps ahead of her. The couple says everything—from the bride’s flowing strapless ballgown to the wheelchairaccessible transportation to the last flickering centerpiece—was perfect. “The Gifted Wedding set up everything. They let us have input about design and options like food, but they worked with certain vendors,” Julie says. “With a free wedding, anything would have been great...but everything they did was superb.” Just a few months after their first anniversary, Julie and Justin are doing well. She earned her master’s degree and teaches at Hazelwood Central Middle School, and Justin serves as an ambassador for the Delta Center, a disability advocacy organization. Julie says their family will always face extra challenges and expenses, but Justin’s upbeat outlook is what she fell in love with and what will keep them strong. “In his situation, it’s so easy to be negative,” she says. “He was so uplifting for me... He’ll make you laugh all day long.”

All [ Things Dental by mary jo blackwood RN, MPH

Not only is our smile what people notice first, but the state of our dental health reflects the state of our overall health. Local experts tell us how to take care of our teeth and gums.

Dr. Christopher Wolken, Wolken Dental One of the biggest boons to cosmetic dentistry is digitalization. We now use 3-D images instead of impressions to make crowns. Current technology for creating porcelain crowns uses a special camera to capture and scan the tooth with no distortion, allowing us to make highly accurate, all-porcelain crowns right in the office in as little as one hour. If the tooth is damaged or needs special materials, it may take a day. We put a temporary crown on the tooth and you return the next day for the permanent one. We’re also using more natural-looking, all-porcelain crowns instead of the old porcelain-over-metal, which looked opaque and had black rims at the top. With the new porcelain, it’s much easier to match the shade to existing teeth, so we generally only have to crown the teeth that need it, not adjacent teeth, to make them all match. Dr. Kevin Postol, private practice Two of the best things that have happened to cosmetic dentistry in terms of time, convenience, and cost are Lumineers and Snap-on Smile. Lumineers are ultra-thin veneers that cover short, misshapen teeth and gaps between them without any tooth preparation. With normal, thicker veneers, teeth must be filed down. Lumineers are cemented to your natural teeth and applied in two visits. The manufacturer warrants them for 20 years. Snap-on Smile is an upper or lower, full-arch tooth cover that goes over existing teeth and snaps in place. An impression is taken and sent to the lab, where a customized covering for the teeth is designed. They work for photos and special events. If well cared for, they can last three to five years. People who have severe cosmetic problems and don’t have the $15,000 needed to restore their teeth can have Snap-on Smile for $1,000 or less.

Gone are the metal mouths of our youth. But we never outgrow the desire for straight, healthy teeth. Dr. Nick Azar, Azar Orthodontics The difference between orthodontics in kids and adults is that adult jaws have stopped growing, so we’re dealing only with moving teeth. With kids, jaw growth and movement are additional factors to adjust for. Theoretically, you’re never too old for braces, unless other issues develop. Periodontal disease, for example, can lead to loss of bone and support for the teeth. Orthodontists don’t want to move teeth in unhealthy bone. If teeth and gums are healthy, we have more options to offer adults: clear ceramic brackets for the top teeth that are almost invisible; Invisalign, depending on what we’re trying to accomplish; and lingual braces, which work entirely on the inside of the teeth. Anyone thinking about orthodontics and willing to devote the effort for about two years should consider it. Dr. William Mastorakos, Mastorakos Orthodontic Associates Invisalign has changed a lot during the past year and now applies to a wider variety of situations. In its earlier stages, it wasn’t able to move teeth in all three planes like traditional braces. The new Invisalign G-4 technology uses small, tooth-colored ridges that glue onto the surface of the teeth. The clear trays

now have recesses around those ridges, like having handles on the teeth, so teeth move more effectively. For people who need more correction than Invisalign provides, clear ceramic braces are stateof-the-art. The doors on the brackets that used to be metal are now ceramic. The wires themselves are heat-activated nickel titanium, and go in easily, working with body heat to move the teeth better, quicker and more painlessly. Dr. Larry Levens, Levens Orthodontics Lingual braces are impressive. The latest generation uses CAD-CAM engineering to give us much more control over the precision of tooth movement we’re trying to achieve. Everything is mounted invisibly on the back of the teeth. In the past, brackets protruded more, a problem for the tongue. They are now so customized that the brackets lay flat against the teeth and the wires are bent precisely to conform to the same shape. This straightens teeth about 25 percent faster than braces on the front do. Lingual braces are five times less likely to create white spots, or pre-cavity lesions from tartar buildup. This is especially important for kids and teens who may not brush as well as they should. I’m so passionate about lingual braces that I’m teaching other dentists how to do them.

Choosing a Toothbrush Any toothbrush you consider should have the American Dental Association seal of approval. Some tips: »» Bristles: Soft bristles are the safest choice for manual or electric toothbrushes. Hard bristles can damage gums and enamel. »» Manual or electric: As long as you use proper brushing technique, you should be able to reduce plaque build-up and keep your gums healthy with either. Kids have limited dexterity and may do better with a power toothbrush. Powered rotation oscillation toothbrushes, in which bristles go around and back and forth, are more effective than manual toothbrushes.

Your story continues here…

[ great idea

[ why a pediatric dentist? ] You wouldn’t send your 3-year-old to an internist. Why take him to an adult dentist? “Pediatric dentists do specialized residencies, often in teaching hospitals, where they are trained to deal with pediatric issues and behavioral management techniques,” says Dr. Lindsey Reed of St. Louis Pediatric Dentistry. Both the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommend a child make his first visit to the dentist by his first birthday. “That first exam doesn’t involve cleaning or X-rays and is generally done on the parent’s lap,” Reed explains. “We check on teeth that should have erupted, any abnormalities of the palate and soft tissue in the mouth, and whether there are any early signs of cavities.” At that initial visit, the dentist also teaches the parent how to wipe or brush the teeth after milk, juice or nursing. “Habits like putting a child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice or giving him snacks that stick to the teeth can make some children more cavity-prone,” Reed says. She recommends fluoride varnish every six months to prevent cavities. “Overall, the earlier a child is seen by a kidfriendly dentist, the more positive his later visits will be,” Reed notes. “Children who wait until age 3 or 4 may be more apprehensive about the experience.”

HEALTH&BEAUTY

[ dental implants: better than teeth ] For those who grew up before fluoridated water, keeping original teeth healthy can be a struggle. Fortunately, contemporary dentistry has a solution. Dr. John Monterubio, Monterubio & Herbosa Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery People hear a lot about mini-implants, which are designed to be temporary anchors for a denture or bridge while the real implant is getting settled in the bone. They are touted as less costly and able to be loaded immediately, but they can cause bone loss when they fail, which they do often compared to traditional implants, which have a 96 to 98 percent success rate at 20 years. New implant technology, 3-D cone beam dental imaging, looks at the bone with virtual software that allows precise placement to avoid nerves and sinus cavities, or impingement on other teeth. We can place one for a single tooth, or multiple implants to support a full arch. With adequate bone, the implant can be inserted and a cosmetic tooth put on until the implant fully integrates with the bone inabout six to eight weeks. If bone has been lost because of long-standing missing teeth, bone grafting can prepare the implant site.

Dr. Robert E. O’Brien, Kehrs Mill Family Dental Care Traditional dental implants are the best thing to happen to dentistry. They’ve been around for 50 years and can literally change lives. When they are placed into the jawbone, bone loss stops. Under a denture, the bone continues to dissolve, and if you wait long enough, you’ll need bone grafting before placing implants. The time to do an implant is about four months after an extraction, when the bone has healed but hasn’t started dissolving. Once the implant is in, it stays forever. Dentures cut chewing power by two-thirds. Many people with dentures won’t eat with anyone else because their dentures click or fall out. Meal time should be a social time. With implants to stabilize the denture, or replace partial plates, people can chew anything they want. Diet and overall health are much better. Having implants with replacement teeth gives people back their confidence, as well as their smile.

[ cleanings and x-rays ] “Because the mouth is the gateway to the rest of the body, and periodontal (gum) disease is implicated in conditions like heart disease and diabetes, catching it early is very important,” says Dr. Srdjan Ilic of Prestige Dental. Generally, people should see a dentist for an exam and cleaning twice a year. “But patients with periodontal disease might need to see a dentist every three months, depending on the severity.” The frequency of dental X-rays should be based on past history. “If you’re cavityprone or have a lot of fillings and crowns, get X-rayed yearly,” Ilic says. “For mostly natural teeth in good shape, that can stretch to two years.” Don’t make the mistake of thinking if it doesn’t hurt, everything’s OK. “By the time it hurts, you may have lost some bony support for the teeth,” Ilic says. Treatment is much more expensive than prevention, and doesn’t always fix the problem, he adds.

[Trend report Autumn Lip Colors by lauren madras | photo by charles barnes

Allergy season may have you skipping the eye makeup these days, so compensate with a

punchy lip color for instant, easy, oh-so-sexy glam. On the runways

in Paris, New York and London, two totally different, equally amazing looks ruled. One end of the spectrum featured deep burgundy stain ranging from berry to black to bring out your darker side. At the other was a barely-there pink that re-imagines the nude lip.

[>> poison kiss ] Sonia Kashuk Satin Luxe Lipcolor Plum Wine Bring just a little bit of burlesque into your life with racy shades of plum that look almost black when applied. There’s something Gothic about a lip color this dark—and you’ll be amazed by how white your teeth will look by contrast! Don’t pair a deep hue like this with bronzer or bright blush—against pale autumn and winter skin, the color will pop. $10 at Target

[>> femme fatale ] Lancome L’Absolu Crème de Mat Potion D’Amour Red lips are classic, but sometimes just a little too flashy. This berry gloss will warm your whole face, especially olive and medium-dark tones, and can even be multi-purposed as a cheek stain for a naturallooking flush. The gloss is opaque, a hallmark of the season, but the luminescence will feel light and flirty—perfect for date night. $29.50 at department stores

[>> as you like it ] Mark Make It Rich Hey Honey and Naturally No matter your end goal, these creamy crayons deliver bold, opaque color. And the color lasts but doesn’t stain—it’s the best of lipstick and liner. Normally, long-lasting lip colors, especially matte ones, are drying and show the worst of your errors, but these are as simple to use as they are to sharpen. $11 at meetmark.com

[>> rosy outlook ] top shop lips rumour has it This season’s nude lip is anything but naked. The light pinky tones mimic skin color while turning it on its head—a hyper-pigmented neutral that will require the same all-day color that bolder lips have commanded in the past. The Lips formula hugs your skin tight, never budging, smudging or cracking as the day wears on. Just in case, pop the color in your bag for touch-ups. With packaging this cute, it’s a statement all its own. $16 at us.topshop.com

[>> ground floor ] Crabtree & Evelyn Sweet Tea Lip Tint The product requiring the least color commitment of the bunch is a moisturizing gloss that still includes the all-important detail of this season: an opaque, on-purpose color that will perk up your pout. Aloe barbadensis leaf extract soothes lips while shea butter helps moisturize and condition. Your lips will improve in texture while you mimic an effortless runway look. $9 at Gussie’s and down by the station

Running Three miles before work with my German pointer. Now that it’s dark, I’m trying to find a shirt with reflectors on it to run in the morning. Gym time Forty-five minutes after work, five times a week – I try to make it six. Cardio My favorite machine is the StairMaster, for 30 minutes. I like to challenge myself to burn the most calories in the least amount of time. Weightlifting I do body resistance, and I love kettle bells. I feel like I’m better with free weights. I used to do machines, but sometimes I get intimidated by them. I challenge myself daily; if 10 pounds doesn’t feel like I’m getting anywhere, I’ll go up. I watch people who are being trained at the gym for little pointers.

All eyes are on the bride when she walks down the aisle on her wedding day, and Kim Kener intends to be ready. “I want to be comfortable in my own skin on the day I get married,” Kener says. “I want to feel good and do it in a healthy way.” The recently engaged Plaza Motors executive assistant is no stranger to the gym, and she hopes to keep up her fitness routine to look her best when she gets married next October. An athlete in high school, Kener lost some of her drive to stay active after college and grew unhappy with how she looked and felt. A few years ago she decided to join Weight Watchers and start a workout regimen, and she lost 40 pounds. “I think I was just tired of feeling sorry for myself,” Kener says. “I told myself, ‘You’re the one who got yourself here, now do something about it.’” For Kener,

near-daily exercise has had benefits beyond the physical. “It’s become my therapy,” she says. “If I don’t get a good workout in, I’m miserable. I continue to push myself, even after work when I’m just beat. I’m happier afterward.” Kener is now active even outside the gym. She and her two sisters completed the Warrior Dash, a 5K race and obstacle course with mud pits and climbing walls, Sept. 29. Her fiance, Rob Andersson, popped the question in August while the pair were on a hike during their vacation in Aspen, Colo., where they also biked and whitewater rafted. For the big day, Kener has one main fitness goal. “I want to work on my arms, big time,” she says. “They’re not bad, but I want a little more definition.”

parent trap Boys Can’t Be Boys by dr. tim jordan This year marks the 100th anniversary of Hiram Bingham’s discovery of the Incan ruins at Machu Picchu in Peru. It’s important to me because in November, I will join my two sons for a four-day hike along the Incan Trail that leads to Machu Picchu, an adventure I very much look forward to. Boys and men are hardwired for adventure. From the moment we emerge from the womb, we are predisposed for movement, action and risk-taking. Our prehistoric brains have programmed us to hunt, protect and provide. It sets men up to act differently, think and learn than women. Our stories are different as well. The traditional hero’s journey is an external one, involving the slaying of dragons and quests for the Holy Grail. Luke Skywalker joined the Fleet; Frodo’s trek took him to Mordor; David slew Goliath. These stories contrast with the heroine’s journey, which is more of an internal transformation. But that’s for another article. My concern is that boys today do not have the opportunity to experience adventure. We have chained them to their seats at school, despite our knowledge that boys learn better through hands-on, experiential learning. Off-school hours are chock-full of supervised, organized sports and activities that leave no room for initiative and risk-taking. And I think it costs boys. When I was young, I sold the evening paper on a street corner every night, five

days a week. My friends and I ran wild in the woods near our homes, shooting BB and pellet guns and blowing things up with our cherry bombs and M-80’s. We played army, built forts, walked up creeks for miles on end. On those afternoons, the world was our oyster. That unsupervised time allowed us to initiate and create our own fun, handle our boredom and take risks in order to ascertain our limits. Challenging ourselves out in the real world built character, leadership, resilience and a sense of ownership. And we learned the invaluable street smarts that most kids and young adults are sorely lacking today. When people heard that my then 24-year-old son was taking off on a backpacking trip to New Zealand, Australia and Southeast Asia for 18 months, there were some judgments about when was he going start his career. Similar judgments have come now that my two sons are backpacking through South America for six months—all achieved with their own money and planning. A recent video they sent of them careening on a boat at the foot of Iguazu Falls, screaming at the top of their lungs at the wonder of it all, was all I needed to know that it was time well spent. They are on their own version of a quest, their hero’s journey. They are creating their own adventures, which they’ll be talking about for years to come. Find opportunities for your sons to experience the joy and growth that only adventures can give them.

Ask the Expert

Question: My wrist has been hurting for the past month. I work in childcare, and it is difficult for me to carry the young children in my class or do any of my normal activities. Initially, it hurt only occasionally but now it hurts all the time. What should I do?

Answer:

Wrist pain can be caused by a number of different problems. Pain on the radial, or thumb side of the wrist, is commonly caused by inflammation along the tendons extending from the forearm and wrist into the base of the thumb. Tendons are ropelike structures that attach muscles to bone. In De Quervain’s tendinitis, inflammation in and around the affected tendons leads to pain with activities that require thumb motion (pinching, gripping, twisting, etc). De Quervain’s tendinitis most commonly affects women in their 40s-50s. Discomfort typically develops slowly, often times with the onset of a new activity (holding a newborn baby, gardening for first time in the spring, new exercise routine, etc.). Patients notice pain on the thumb side of the wrist that may radiate up the arm towards the elbow. They may also notice some swelling in the area of maximum tenderness.

Initial treatment includes rest and temporarily refraining from activities that worsen the symptoms. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and a splint to prevent excessive thumb motion may also be helpful in the first stages of treatment. If pain persists, a steroid injection into the affected area may help to quiet the inflammation and decrease pain. Non-surgical therapy works for approximately 90% of patients, but for those whose symptoms are not relieved, surgery is the next option. This procedure involves a small incision over the affected area to release the two tendons implicated in De Quervain’s tendinitis (abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis) from the tunnel in which they are being irritated. Surgery has a high success rate, with 90-95% of patients experiencing pain relief and ability to resume all activities. Like most things in medicine, prevention is always the best cure. Early non-operative treatment including rest and immobilization often leads to resolution of symptoms in four to six weeks; if symptoms last longer, call to make an appointment to see your doctor.

To some people, a car is a just way to get from point A to point B. David Schwartz is not one of those people. The Town & Country resident buys several vehicles a year at St. Louis Motorsports. “These automobiles are so beautiful, I want to experience as many as I can,” says the retired Brown Shoe executive. He’s currently driving a 2012 Aston Martin Virage convertible—but he’s already got his eye on the 2013 models.

Q. Why did you choose the Aston Martin Virage? A. I’ve owned Aston Martins before, and I’ve always been pleased. I knew they weren’t making many Virages,

so I took one out as soon as it arrived at the dealership. It was exhilarating. The mechanics are amazing. It handles unbelievably well, and it’s fast. One could take it out at 180 or 190 mph, if one were so inclined.

Q. What was the first car that caught your eye when you were a teenager? A. Probably the Austin Healey in the early 1960s, followed by the first Corvette Stingray, the one with the

split-window fastback, and then the Jaguar XKE. I couldn’t afford cars like that in those days, but I could dream about them.

Q. You’re known as a connoisseur of fine cars and have owned many over the years. A. I’m drawn to cars for their intrinsic aesthetic quality. A great car is a piece of functioning, usable art.

That’s why I’m always window-shopping at St. Louis Motorsports. They know a lot about fine cars—and they appreciate them as much as I do.

Q. Of the 40-some cars you’ve owned, what are your favorites? A. The Bentley Continental Supersport and the Aston Martin DBS are among the most unforgettable I’ve ever

driven—the speed, the power! Step on the accelerator and they throw you back like a rocket. Yet they’re as easy to handle as a Honda Accord.

Q. Do you remember your first car? A. It was a hand-me-down from my dad, the ugliest car you’ve ever seen: a 1960 Chevrolet Biscayne. Adding

insult to injury, it was turquoise. I knew then that if I wanted to own the kind of cars I wanted to drive, I’d need a lot of money. That’s one of the reasons I was driven to succeed in business. The finer things in life are not free.

It’s that time of year again, and the 2012 vintage is going to be epic!

My wife and I spent two weeks of September on our honeymoon in California wine country. It is a very exciting and busy time of year! From Napa and Sonoma down to the Central Coast, wineries and vintners have a renewed optimism regarding the 2012 harvest.

What makes this year so special? Grapes don’t like surprises—they like long stretches of consistent weather. Conditions have been ideal this year. A warm spring resulted in early bud break in the vineyards. These young buds on the vine are very delicate. When they develop so early in the spring, these buds are very susceptible to another frost occurring in the vineyard. This would decimate a large portion of the crop before it has a chance to flower. Fortunately for all of us, this was not the case in 2012. Another crucial time for the grape vines is veraison, when the grapes change color and begin to ripen. Consistent temperatures and weather patterns this year allowed for slow and even ripening of the grapes. Another factor this season has been the daily see-saw between warm and cool temperatures, called diurnals. It’s not uncommon in Napa Valley to consistently have high temperatures in the 90s with lows at night dipping into the 40s! This year, these dramatic diurnals have created a beautiful balance between sugar levels and acidity in the grapes. The wine grapes ripen under the hot sun during the day and maintain their freshness and acidity during the cool nights. This results in a well-balanced final product with good structure as well as good concentration of fruit flavor. Even grape growers and wine makers in Missouri are excited about the 2012 vintage. “2012 has been a versatile year in the vineyards, but the outcome could be phenomenal for certain varietals,” says Bryan Siddle, director of operations at Crown Valley Winery, Brewery and Distillery. Our growing season started this year with a late frost rolling into one of the toughest droughts in history. While grapes love stress, it was definitely a stress-filled year for the grapes and growers alike. The big surprise is the crop yields of our white varieties like Viognier and Valvin Muscat. Our Viognier has the potential to be one of the most balanced and fruitful wines we have ever made. The red, on other hand, had lower yields and inefficient fruit color but still will blend and make a nice, rounded vintage.” Whether you’re looking for a local white wine to drink immediately or an age-worthy Napa Cabernet to lay down for 20 years, 2012 promises to rank up there with some of the best vintages of the past decade!

knock-off. The movie follows an all-girl college singing group that struggles to recruit newbies after a disastrous performance at last year’s championship competition. The motley crew of talented-but-eccentric singers they assemble threatens to tarnish the group’s polish as they compete their way back to the top. Mixing melodrama and cynicism, the film pokes fun at the college obsession with a capella, but the beautiful harmonies the singers create explain why it’s so popular. Just as their characters do in competition, the supporting actresses continually steal the scenes, to hilarious effect. Should You See It? Absolutely, I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time! —R.K.

even though we all know how it ends. The movie is set during the Iranian revolution in 1979, and anti-American sentiment is high. The unlikely story is based on something that really happened: while 66 American hostages are imprisoned by the revolutionary mob, six U.S. Embassy employees slip out and secretly take refuge with the Canadian ambassador. I loved watching as CIA chief of technical services Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) convinces everyone that posing as a Hollywood crew scouting for a movie location is their only chance to extract the hideaways. John Goodman and Alan Arkin were especially entertaining as patriotic Hollywood types. And seeing Affleck bluff his way through 48 extremely tense hours in Tehran offered a glimpse of what operatives sacrifice for God and country. Should You See It? Yes! —D.W.

Ensalada de Casa, Blackened Swordfish Tacos, Grilled Rib-Eye

A new Mexican restaurant has taken over the Lafayette Square spot Arcelia’s occupied for 20 years. Laredo on Lafayette is not only a new restaurant, it’s a newer style of Mexican fare. The menu is divided into Classicos—traditional enchiladas, burritos, tacos, etc.—and Fusion, favorite American entrees that have received a south of the border treatment. That includes things like swordfish with chipotle rub and garlic-cilantro mashed potatoes, and rib-eye with poblano cream sauce. I really enjoyed our meals here. The food was authentic—great salsa, spicy rubs, fresh-tasting veggies. And although prices are a little higher than you usually find at Mexican spots, I actually found that reassuring. A $3 taco always leaves me wondering... Not here: A salad starter confirmed that someone in the kitchen is focused on fresh and natural. My Ensalada de Casa ($7) was a marvelous plate of crisp greens, sweet tomato, cubed Chihuahua cheese, avocado, a few slivers of red onion and delicate

roasted yellow peppers. It had one other ingredient: grilled corn that actually had been grilled crisp, with char marks. And the dressing was a thoughtful, creamy cilantro that tasted buttermilk-based. A side of guacamole ($7) was chunky, with bits of cubed tomato, chopped cilantro and some jalapeño bits. From the Fusion section, we had Blackened Swordfish Tacos ($13), which I highly recommend. So different from the typical tilapia version, these had a nice chunk of firm swordfish positively caked in blackening spices (pepper, paprika, salt, onion, thyme, cayenne). The coating gave the fish a certain crustiness, too. There were two decent-sized tacos in large, soft tortillas that tasted house-made. Also piled in each were flavorful sauces—pico de gallo, avocado chipotle aioli, queso fresco—serving to cut the heat of the rub. This dish came with soup or salad side. Another Fusion dish, Grilled Rib-Eye, caught my eye as soon as I saw the $13 price tag. Sure enough, it wasn’t a full-out steak, but a thin slab of excellent

On the Classico side, an order of Pollo Mole ($12) had breast meat smothered in traditional house-made mole, slightly sweet and slightly spicy. On the menu it was described as a blend of dried chiles and Mexican chocolate, but the ingredient that unfortunately stood out was salt. It simply overpowered everything else. I still enjoyed it—and the sides of Mexican rice and smashed pinto beans. One odd thing I noticed about the menu: There were no pork dishes. Our dessert of Tequila Coffee Flan ($6) was excellent, a generous, pie-sized wedge of café au laitcolored custard with the mildest liquor flavor. It had an appealing mouthfeel—a creaminess that coated the mouth. It came dusted with ground coffee and drizzled with caramel sauce (never a bad thing).

by bob wilcox The opening night audience at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis’ production of Daddy Long Legs seemed thoroughly charmed and delighted. The performers are charming, too—even if there’s only two of them. As The Rep’s big musical of the season, I was expecting something more. It’s production of Daddy Long Legs sticks closely to Jean Webster’s 1912 novel. Jerusha Abbott is an orphan about to graduate from high school with very few prospects when she receives word that one of the trustees of her orphanage believes she shows promise as a writer and has offered to pay for her college education. He asks only to remain anonymous and that she write him a letter every month recounting her progress, to which he will not reply. She has only glimpsed this man once, remembering a lanky figure. So she writes to him as ‘Daddy Long Legs,’ picturing him as a grandfatherly type. Actually, Jervis Pendleton is in his early 30s. He becomes increasingly enchanted by the letters and by the young woman who writes them. When he discovers that his niece is a classmate of Jerusha’s, he visits the campus as Uncle Jervis. The visits multiply; the mutual attraction grows. So does the dramatic tension— just about the only dramatic tension in this piece—as we wait to discover how Jervis will finally reveal himself to Jerusha. Will she forgive the deception? (Do you have any doubt?) Webster’s novel tells the story through Jerusha’s letters, as does The Rep’s staging. It’s a story theater production, with Jerusha doing much of the narration. The form had its greatest popular success with the 1980 Royal Shakespeare Company’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, directed by John Caird and Trevor Nunn. Caird directs Daddy Long Legs at The Rep; he also wrote the book. All that narration in story theater can be deadly. But Caird knows how to make the form live. He’s helped by his two performers, Ephie Aardema as Jerusha and Webster Conservatory grad Kevin Earley as Jervis. Both are utterly charming and convincing. Their voices fit the score by Paul Gordon, which is more serviceable than memorable. But then, Daddy Long Legs is an easy-telling tale. More challenging will be the production opening this weekend in The Rep’s Studio Theatre, the Tony- and Pulitzer-winner Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris. It takes off from Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun. First it shows the white community in Chicago’s Clybourne Park in 1959 when they learn a black family is moving in. Then it leaps ahead to 2009, when the now-black community learns that a white family wants to buy that same house. Is gentrification about to change the community again? As a happy coincidence—or shrewd programming—the Unity Theatre Ensemble, a venerable company that focuses on the African-American theatrical and literary heritage, is currently staging Hansberry’s play. Unity draws on a pool of fine actors, and it will be worth a trip to the Ivory Theatre to compare the original with Norris’ update. And to note another happy coincidence: The Rep’s season opener, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Neil Simon’s thinly veiled memories of his Brooklyn adolescence, was followed at the New Jewish Theatre by Simon’s Lost in Yonkers. Not obviously autobiographical, Lost in Yonkers also features a pair of brothers during World War II. Both excellent productions showed us a Simon of more substance than the gagmeister of his popular light comedies. Lost in Yonkers, featuring the world’s worst grandmother, has some laughs, but they’re mostly the rueful sort.

at Disney World

W

e’ve all been on vacation and found ourselves thinking, This is so wonderful. I wish I lived here. Disney World, the object of so many childhood wishes, has found a way to fulfill that adult dream at its new residential community, Golden Oak. The gated area of multimillion-dollar homes in Orlando sits on Disney property, but you won’t find tourists strolling down the sidewalks. And while there’s plenty to keep kids and grandkids occupied, the perks that come with a Golden Oak home let the adults enjoy a more refined, grown-up side of the House of Mouse. Currently, homeowners receive complimentary VIP passes that grant full access to all five Disney World theme parks, water parks, ESPN Wide World of Sports and Disney Quest, with special extended hours and no blackout dates. These cover owners and up to four guest for three years. For the full VIP treatment, guests can purchase guided tours with backstage access to parks and rides. Sleek Suburbans pick up you and your guests at your front door and escort you through back entrances at Disney’s theme parks. The guides are Disney veterans with decades of guest services experience and knowledge about even the most obscure park lore.

They time your arrival to attractions of your choice at low-traffic hours and breeze into the Fast Pass line to make the wait time as short as possible. Disney learned long ago that adults like fun, too, and the recent media trip I went on proves there is something for everyone. Parks like Epcot and Hollywood Studios have plenty to amaze teenagers and adults. They can check out amazing special-effects stage shows of Indiana Jones and Star Wars and get a firsthand look at exactly how action films are made. We also visited the Art of Animation, where we saw original sketches from Disney classics and art from upcoming films—even Walt Disney’s first Academy Award for the creation of Mickey Mouse. And those prowling for character autographs should know: there are usually at least five costumed characters in this indoor facility. Downtown Disney and the Boardwalk also offer decidedly grown-up entertainment. Shopping abounds in the former, which is akin to walking down a wide Main Street, but without dodging cars. We found much more than mouse ears; a surprising number of small boutiques, cigar bars and other classier establishments line the walkways. When the sun goes down, nightlife heats

up at Pleasure Island and the West Side of Downtown Disney. Musicians and performers line the streets outside a dozen restaurants; just as the salsa music at Bongos faded away, we heard the smooth Southern sounds from House of Blues. Between the lights, the music and the bars, Main Street suddenly turned into Beale Street. If you must go indoors, Cirque de Soleil has a daily performance of La Nuba, an aerial show exclusive to Pleasure Island. Disney Quest is a five-story arcade where tweens lose themselves in video games while Mom and Dad grab a cocktail across the street. There’s even a movie theater if you just want to catch a flick, and a massive bowling alley called Splitsville, set to open this fall. When ready to head home after a day of fun, Golden Oak residents travel just a few miles to the luxury community. Named after Walt Disney’s ranch home in California, Golden Oak is so serene, it’s hard to believe the buzz and

crowds of the Magic Kingdom are just beyond the wetland tree lines. Instead of pixie dust and costumed characters, residents are greeted by elegant homes with high-end appliances and custom finishes that create a different kind of magic. The homes, which range from $1.5 to $8 million, include outstanding

EAT

For a special night out, Disney resort hotels like the Animal Kingdom, the Contemporary, the Grand Floridian and more offer signature dining experiences. Jiko at Animal Kingdom offers a vast wine selection and menu with dishes from across Africa. For a special night with friends, splurge on a chef tasting menu like the one available at the Contemporary Resort. Tables are set up in the kitchen to watch the chef and crew at work as they create a custom, eight-course meal of delicious, innovative dishes like popcorn soup and salad with blue cheese ice cream dressing.

PLAY

It’s Disney World—where can’t you play? New attractions include New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom, which will feature kid-friendly rides themed around Snow White and The Little Mermaid, and the soon-to-open Be Our Guest Restaurant. Also new, Storybook Circus replaces Toontown, housing the Dumbo ride inside a large circus tent. Interactive games and a new pager system that lets you know when it’s your turn to ride mean even waiting in line can be—dare I say it—fun. Also, don’t miss the Africa Safari Trek at Animal Kingdom, where you can get closer than you ever thought you would to rhinos, giraffes and lions.

RELAX

While the Four Seasons at Golden Oak will include a spa, the only full spa at Disney World currently available is at the Saratoga Springs Resort. (Grand Floridian’s spa is under renovation.) Booking one treatment grants access to the spa’s amenities for the rest of the day. All products come from Primavera, an organic line that left my skin feeling luxuriously moisturized after a Deluxe Facial. The Mystical Forest Massage combines reflexology with traditional massage, working out all those kinks from one too many trips on the Tower of Terror.

MOVE

[ the essentials ]

Golden Oak VIP passes also act as Park Hoppers, meaning you can bounce from park to park all day. You can drive your car, but parking lots are still a good distance from the actual entrances. The Disney Buses run every 20 minutes and provide transportation from parking lots to almost any point at Disney World. Be sure to look at a map, though; the property is huge and a ride from one end to the other can take almost an hour. For a more direct route, the 13.6 mile Monorail system cuts through the main resort hotels (Grand Floridian, Contemporary and Polynesian) and delivers you to Magic Kingdom and Epcot.

walk-in closets. Onsite maintenance crews keep the elegant—if small— landscaping blooming and tidy, even in the Orlando heat. Optional membership to Summerhouse, a private clubhouse with event spaces, a restaurant and bar, wine cellar, fitness facility and more, costs $5,000 a year. An elite, 444-room Four Seasons Resort is slated to open on the Golden Oak grounds in 2014. Residents will have access to its golf courses and spa services. Golden Oak doesn’t scream Mickey Mouse, but occasional design elements pop out to remind you that you do live at Disney World. In one room at Summerhouse, a wall is covered with early character sketches from classic animated films like Pinocchio and Peter Pan. In the center sits a small drawing of Walt Disney’s first idea for Disney World, a rough crayon sketch of parking lots and campgrounds circled around a small cluster of park rides. Every night at Disney ends with fanfare and fireworks, and while The Magic Kingdom is filled with great vantage points, what could be better than celebrating America’s premier playground from your own backyard?

REAL ESTATE

photos by steven b. smith photography

T&S properties 9999 litzsinger road by rebecca koenig listing price | $1,265,000 listing agent | gina bundy of gladys manion From lawn games to driving lessons, Carolyn Eirich has many happy memories of her youth spent at 9999 Litzsinger Road. “It was almost a magical place for kids,” she says. Modernist architect Harris Armstrong, responsible for the striking Ethical Society building, designed the Litzsinger house in 1951. Its unique butterfly roof immediately distinguishes it from its more traditional neighbors. It is a passive solar home, which means it uses sunlight to heat and cool interior spaces without the aid of external energy sources. The great room and three of the four bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows that allow ample light to stream through, and a basement fan draws in and circulates cool air. Eirich says even as a child she appreciated her home’s synchronization with the natural world. “The thing that was most amazing is that the house is so connected to the outdoors, you just felt you were outside constantly,” she says. “It has walls and walls of glass that look over a beautiful green area that’s so private from the street. You feel like you’re in a tree house.” The home’s atrium adds to the effect. “It could be the middle of the winter with snow falling, but you had blooming plants,” she says. The house has lots of room for a big family; when Eirich and her five siblings weren’t playing baseball together or riding go-carts in the yard, they each could

find a quiet corner. “There was always a place you could go to have your own space,” she says. Entertaining was easy for kids and adults alike. “The basement was an incredible space,” Eirich remembers, with its fireplace, terrazzo floors, wet bar and built-in shuffleboard. “It was a huge space for hanging out. Friends were always coming over for parties in the basement.” Her parents threw what Eirich remembers as “fabulous parties” there, making use of the outdoor terrace. One event she recalls had a ‘nine’ theme, fitting the property’s address. Even after the children grew up and moved away, the house drew them back for special occasions. “Even though that living room area is long, when we did family gatherings it really would feel completely intimate,” Eirich says. “It was always the hub of every holiday.”

2019 S. WARSON ROAD L ADU E , MISSO U R I 6 3 1 2 4 Serene. Beautiful. Fun. This is a wonderful 3-acre Ladue estate hidden off Warson for total privacy. Turn down the long private driveway and find a classic of sophistication and style. This entertainer’s dream home has an easy open floor plan with lots of bright natural light. The kitchen and breakfast area sit open to the family room. A large expanse of floor-to-ceiling windows offers a beautiful view to the park inspired grounds and pool. The first floor master suite is in a world all its own. Creamy heated limestone floors, 15 foot ceiling and a sitting area with floor-to-ceiling windows opens to a private deck. Three additional bedroom suites are designed with a stone wall, fireplace and ‘ships’ ladder to a private loft. A fifth suite is perfect for guests. There is a total of 12,000 sq. ft. on three floors. A three-year project renovated the existing home and two additions completed the space. While the home is rooted in the most classic of architecture and will stand the test of time, the home was rebuilt for today’s lifestyle. Offered at $4,495,000.

[homework Dear Homework, We bought this house out of an estate seven years ago. The same family owned the house for 40 years, so as you can imagine the list of projects has been endless. We have focused most of our attention on the inside, and now the outside is in desperate need of a makeover. We don’t really know where to start—please help! ———Outside the Box

Dear outside the box,

before

My initial reaction is that your house needs a front porch, shutters and more elaborate landscaping. Beyond those obvious suggestions, though, I am going to suggest something a little more ‘out there.’ The basic bones of your house are rooted in the Regency period of English Georgian architecture, a period characterized by severe simplicity, tall slender proportions and minimal, yet impactful, Greek detailing. Your home’s proportions, symmetry and detailing take us 60 percent of the way to a Regency jewel. I would like to add a more prominent doorcase, wooden storm door and huge lanterns. Over the ground-floor windows, I would add swagged panels to extend the line of the windows to the prominent brick string course. Detached brick piers topped with elegant limestone urns and a low yew hedge complete the foreground of the property. Taller chimney caps and simpler interior draperies finish it. The initial impression of your house may be one of a dull, flat box, but with a few bold changes, you end up with a rather elegant little palace. Thanks for asking. ———Homework
