[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] As readers probably have noticed, the covers of Town & Style always include a charitable component. One of the best things about that is that we get up-close and personal to the nonprofits in St. Louis. It’s a sobering experience learning about organizations that bring food to shut-ins, teach eighth-graders to read, or provide shelter and sustenance to indigent seniors. We’re reminded every day how much need there is right here, among our neighbors. After all, it’s very easy to become inured to the hardships around us. Just as the violence of TV and movies deadens us to news of real people being shot (or worse), poverty and need also can seem unreal. Fiction may imitate reality, but the similarity ends there: hunger and other social ills are very real. And our involvement, however minimal—by volunteering or donating— makes a difference. Organizations like Kingdom House, the 100-year-old nonprofit featured on the cover of today’s issue, work hard to improve the lives of St. Louisans in need. After all, no child says, I want to be poor when I grow up. Kids want to succeed, and with places like Kingdom House and other caring agencies offering support, they have a better chance of doing it. So this holiday season, when we’re giving thanks for all that’s wonderful in our lives, is a good time to remember that even small donations can have a big impact. I always think to myself, If everyone who is asked gave $10 or $20, the end result wouldn’t be small at all. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

MONEY ISN’T THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD—except when you
don’t have enough to pay your bills and feed your family. “You can’t achieve self-sufficiency without first gaining economic independence,” says Scott Walker, executive director of Kingdom House. “For more than 100 years, we’ve been supplying our clients with tools to build a better future.” Kingdom House, located just south of downtown St. Louis, reaches about 10,000 people annually through a comprehensive spectrum of support services. Programs include food and clothing assistance, childcare for parents who are actively seeking employment or attending school; GED and ESOL tutoring, and classes in parenting, financial literacy and jobs skills. “Education is essential for building self-esteem and creating employment opportunities,” Walker notes. “So last year we established Kingdom Academy, a year-round, multi-year program that encourages kids to stay in high school and prepares them for post-secondary education, be it college or job training.” The Academy consists of 100 area high school students, 25 at every grade level. “We provide whatever support they need to stay in school, including tutoring, job-skills training, college visits and job-shadowing opportunities,” Walker says. “And we keep mentoring them after they finish.” One Academy student went from failing all her classes to making the honor roll, as well as receiving awards for community service and attitude, Walker reports. Another student, verging on homelessness after being abandoned by his mother, is now back in school. “He takes two buses and Metrolink to get there and never misses a day,” Walker says. “And he’s making excellent grades.” Adult education is another Kingdom House priority. “Financial literacy is a crucial component of self-sufficiency, so we’ve partnered with Carrollton Bank and St. Louis Community Credit Union to open a micro-branch at Kingdom House,” Walker says. “The branch provides services that aren’t available in a traditional bank, such as credit-builder loans, second-chance checking for folks with a bad credit rating, and the opportunity to pay off payday loans and obtain a regular loan at a reasonable interest rate.” Clients also can enroll in Individual Development Accounts, a United Way matched savings program to help them get an education, start a business, or buy a car or home. Kingdom House receives financial help from United Way and individual donations, but relies on fundraising to fill the gaps. Spring Bling, which takes place March 27 at Moulin, features live and silent auctions of designer handbags, jewelry and accessories. The girls’ night out is chaired by Genevieve Barlow. “Most of our clients live in single-parent households headed by women,” Walker says. “So Spring Bling is particularly meaningful, because it allows women to empower women.” Empowerment is what Kingdom House is all about. “Everyone needs someone to believe in them and help them when they stumble,” Walker says. “No one can do it alone. We know we’re on the right track when we hear our clients say, ‘My life is better because of Kingdom House.’”

TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.
It’s way the heck too big to be called Golf World, so perhaps that’s why the 32,000-square-foot store that does more than just sell clubs and duds had to be called Golf Galaxy. The company’s second spot in Missouri, it celebrated its grand opening recently in Chesterfield Commons. Customers may interact with the store’s PGA pros, get tips from club technicians, and whack the dimpled sphere in five hitting bays and an indoor demo range. Duffers and zero-handicappers alike may get a rush in the store’s on-site, full-service 42-foot Tour Van, where they can select products and receive custom fittings and instruction We don’t know how many yards it is to the next closest area store, in the Brentwood Promenade, but count on a bunch of doglegs. Anyone with an eye on Laumeier Sculpture Park in Sunset Hills knows that the huge, eerily realistic sculpture of an eyeball has been moved farther away from the circa 1917 house that anchors the 125-acre former estate. It will make way for a new (wait for it…) eye-catching building at the park. Ground was broken Oct. 23 for the Adam

A $1 million renovation of the house is projected for completion earlier, in the spring of 2014. City council meetings most anywhere can range from dull to boring, unless you consider any number of the sessions conducted in Ellisville this year. Adam Paul, the mayor, was impeached. Then he was reinstated. You could blame a lot of this on Walmart, which some folks blame for many things in this country, if not the Civil War. The ‘old,’ pre-Aprilelection council voted to usher in the giant retailer, with a hefty package of financial incentives. The ‘new’ council put the kibosh on that, and it appears as though the Bentonville, Ark., behemoth has thrown in the towel, although the local developer has said otherwise. Paul campaigned against the project. So, soon after the mayor’s return, the city attorney was fired. Now, the city manager is out; at its Oct. 28 meeting the council voted 4-2 to oust him. Both were supporters of Walmart’s plan to build a $50 million ‘Supercenter’ at

Yes, pumpkins are symbolic of a bountiful harvest, and skillful bakers can transform some smaller varieties into pie filling, but it was clear from the new sign that the goal of the Pumpkin Patch at Lockwood and Berry was to move most of the big orange berries* by Halloween. Within those same two days, the Series game tally had gone from 2-1 St. Louis to 3-2 Boston. Meanwhile, some kid on a dare had swiped a pumpkin from the patch. Glendale police returned him and his ill-gotten booty, but the good pumpkin people turned the other cheek, declining to press charges. How heartwarming. (The pretty pumpkin was safe and as yet unsmashed (but soon to rot anyhow).… How disheartening. (Cloudy, rainy and chilly, with no more baseball until spring ... better luck next year.) She was unharmed, police say, when the suspect was apprehended after a heads-up from the Allegan County, Mich., sheriff that a particular car might be in our area. The good guys caught him within the hour. Well, this creep wasn’t too concerned about flying under the radar, so to speak: He was driving an orange 1999 Mustang with expired California plates. Go figure. At this writing, he was in our county clink awaiting extradition; the girl was waiting for family to come take her home. (There’s more than coffee and doughnuts at this high-traffic QT. travelers, this also facilitates a grim reality: human trafficking. Criminals engaged in this sordid enterprise transport young women, sometimes children, for prostitution along the north-south Interstate 55 corridor from Chicago to New Orleans. Good news comes via Magdalene House, an upcoming two-year residential program for women who have survived abuse, violence, addiction and life on the streets. Magdalene St. Louis just hired an executive director and is adding staff in anticipation of its first house here, opening in 2014. In addition to housing, Magdalene St. Louis will provide food, medical care, therapy, education and job training at no charge. It is an offshoot of the Magdalene program in Nashville, where, for more than 16 years, ¾ of clients have remained clean and sober for two and a half years after entering—a phenomenal recovery rate for crack cocaine and heroin addiction. National statistics show that less than 5 percent of addicts hooked on either drug manage to stay clean for extended periods. With a home in the Town & Country neighborhood of Hamptons Lane and a chiropractic office in Crestwood, Anthony Calandro was living the high life. But he was financing his lifestyle fraudulently, by charging insurance companies for innumerable procedures that weren’t performed, as well as for patients who were no-shows. He was convicted last year in federal court and sentenced to six years in prison. Meanwhile, for nearly 20 years he had check-writing privileges as a trustee of his neighborhood association, until a fellow trustee allegedly ferreted out that checks had been written for upkeep, including landscaping and snow removal, at one particular location in the upscale subdivision—Calandro’s home. County prosecutors say he’d also withdrawn association funds at casinos. For now, Calandro can’t do much about the $1 million he’s been ordered by the feds to repay, much less the 40 grand of his neighbors’ money he’s alleged to have skimmed. Life isn’t so tony for Calandro these days, as he’s living on a different block: a cellblock in the federal prison in Marion, Ill.

For students moving into the Washington University apartments north of the Delmar Loop next August, the math is easy. ‘Green’ features built into their units will mean lower heating costs. But it would shift the costs to those building or financing the project. For now, all buildings fall within a U. City code that does not include the thicker walls, better insulation and tightly sealed windows merely ‘recommended’ by a code enacted last year. Interesting to see what will happen should officials tighten the code to read ‘required.’ We’ll try and keep you posted as city officials mull over this measure. An applicant within a newer zoning structure in Webster Groves, major educational campus (MEC), passed muster with city officials last month. And it was not Webster University. Edgewood Children’s Center will be able to go ahead with major changes throughout its 23-acre campus off North Gore Avenue that over the next several years may include dormitories, an indoor recreational facility and a center for autism. The measure passed 6-1. The city developed MEC zoning so that institutions wouldn’t have to return to the city every time during a construction project to tweak or change items covered by a conditional-use permit but perhaps not explicitly named. During the summer, the city had denied Webster University’s request for changes to allow it to move some operations across Lockwood Avenue to the vacant Luhr Library on the Eden Seminary campus. Webster was the apples to Edgewood’s oranges. Meanwhile, the city is giving the fine-toothed-comb treatment to its zoning code to help clarify other challenges before they come up. *Horticulturists will tell you that the largest berry on earth is the pumpkin. No fooling.

phraseology [ freyz • ŏ • lō • gy ]
The best part of Thanksgiving, after we’ve expressed gratitude for all our blessings, is the leftover turkey. But how did the basis of so many yummy sandwiches come to mean the sudden and total withdrawal from an addictive substance, and the physiological effects of such a withdrawal? No one knows for sure. Some say the phrase comes from the early 1900s Americanism ‘to talk cold turkey’ (‘cold’ was later dropped), meaning to speak bluntly about unpleasant matters. By extension, no-nonsense talking came to mean no-nonsense doing, and to go cold turkey meant to take immediate action. Others claim the phrase originated from the pale, goose-bumped skin of addicts in withdrawal. At any rate, its first known use in reference to drug withdrawal came from a Canadian newspaper, The Daily Colonist, in 1921: “Perhaps the most pitiful figures who have appeared before Dr. Carleton Simon are those who voluntarily surrender themselves. When they go before him, they (drug addicts) are given what is called the ‘cold turkey’ treatment.”
Meanwhile, add apple cider and vinegar to the skillet over high heat, stirring to scrape up any browned bits. Cook eight minutes or until mixture is reduced by two-thirds. Reduce heat to medium; stir in syrup. Remove from heat. Remove tenderloin from baking pan to cutting board and cover with foil. Let stand five minutes. Add tenderloin to skillet; spoon sauce over pork. Slice tenderloin into thin slices. Spoon sauce over slices. SERVES 6-8

Shawnessey Custer, a club member from the UMSL class, first pitched the idea to classmate Sara Ross. “She wanted to create a regular reading group for writers that would carry on the kind of close reading and discussion we’d experienced in class,” Ross says. “As a longtime bookseller, I can’t think of many things I like to do more than talk to people about books. We have people who are interested in different types of writing, so bringing these voices together makes for interesting conversation.” The group is open to the public and meets at 4 p.m. the last Saturday of each month at Left Bank Books downtown (321 N. 10th St.).
THE BOOK
In 1920, Alaskan homesteaders Jack and Mabel are childless and growing apart with the burden of working their farm and the stark loneliness of the surrounding wilderness. During the season’s first snowfall, the couple builds a child out of snow. The next morning, their creation is gone, but they spy a young girl running through the trees. Based on a Russian fairy tale, Eowyn Ivey’s The Snow Child explores family relationships and the ties between humanity and nature.
[ opinions ] >>
“I liked how much the novel kept me guessing. Will Mabel and Jack survive as homesteaders in Alaska? Is the snow child natural or supernatural? Will her life follow the same path as the various fairy tales on which she is based? The outcomes weren’t ever what I expected, making for a pleasurable read.” – JENNIFER TAPPENDEN
>> “The volatile weather and winter forests of Alaska came alive in my mind. Even hunting animals for food and pelts seemed normal and necessary in this created world, which is a long way from my usual urban sensibilities! I am grateful for books that can draw me out of my habitual mindset so that I can see and experience life in new ways.”

[ diamond dreams ] LADUE SOPHOMORE’S SOFTBALL SUCCESS
Sophomore Charlotte Mabbs recently wrapped up a noteworthy season of softball with the Ladue Horton Watkins varsity team. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch ranks her batting percentage (0.605) ninth and her on-base percentage (.691) fifth in the area for the high school season. Although this was Mabbs’ second year as a starting catcher and third batter for her high school team, she has been dedicated to the sport for much longer. When she moved to St. Louis from Tucson the summer before second grade, she already had experience playing Little League baseball, and she picked the sport back up in her new hometown. “When I first moved here, I played baseball with the boys,” Mabbs says. “After a year, we decided to switch to softball.” Outside of her participation with the Ladue team, Mabbs has played with select team the Missouri Warcats for the past three years, coached by Greg Dart and Joe Henak. She works hard at her sport, independently seeking extra help to hone her skills. “I sometimes have catching lessons with my catching coach, Megan Christopher, who was a catcher for Mizzou,” Mabbs says. “I like when you put in so much hard work, and then it pays off in a game; that feels great.” This summer, she played in two local leagues and nine tournaments with the Warcats, including a tournament in Texas, the 16U IFA (Independent Fastpitch Association) World Series Tournament. “I’ve played in a lot of tournaments with my select team,” Mabbs says. “When we went to Texas for the 2013 IFA World Series, we came in third.” Not surprisingly, Mabbs hopes to play softball beyond high school. “I would like to play in college,” she says. “I just want to keep playing as long as I can.”

GOING FOR GOLD
Fourteen-year-old Justine Oestricker goes to school at Collinsville Middle School, but much of her free time is spent on the other side of the river, figure skating with the St. Louis Skating Club at Brentwood Ice Arena. This year, for the first time, she competes at the Upper Great Lakes Regional Figure Skating Championships at the Juvenile level. Unable to find her niche in other sports, Oestricker first tried skating at the age of 6. “I tried gymnastics and ballet, but they didn’t really click with me, so my mom took me to a public skate session,” she says. “When I touched the ice, it was so much fun. I instantly fell in love with the sport and took some classes to learn to skate.” She now practices four to five times a week, but living in Illinois makes fulfilling her desire for ice time challenging. “There are no rinks close to my house,” Oestricker says. “We have to go to St. Louis and sometimes it doesn’t work out with my school schedule.” On top of regular practice, she also meets with a personal trainer each Friday to work on strength. Oestricker has skated in dozens of competitions. She recently placed first in Skate Kansas City and in the Riverbend Spring Classic, and she placed first, second and third in events in last year’s Gateway Invitational. “I’ve won a fair amount of medals and ribbons, but as I’ve been getting up in the levels, I’ve competed against some tough skaters who are really good,” she says. “It just inspires me to do better.” Qualifying for a regional competition is a huge JUSTINE OESTRICKER accomplishment, but this figure skater has dreams even more ambitious. “My long-term goal is to go to the Olympics,” Oestricker says. “Just qualifying for the Olympics would be really cool. I also want to be a figure skating coach, because my coaches want me to do well and I want to inspire other skaters to fulfill their dreams.”

talk to… [iyayi ogbevoen] SUPERSTAR SWIMMER
Since he was 6, freshman Iyayi Ogbevoen has been a competitive swimmer with the Clayton Shaw Park (CSP) Tideriders, a local swim club founded in 1938. All those years of practice have paid off: during this summer’s season with the Tideriders, he won events in 100 freestyle, 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Recently, at his first high school meet with the Ladue Horton Watkins varsity team, he qualified for state in the 100 freestyle event. WHY DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED IN SWIMMING? When I was 3, my dad taught my brother and me to swim. I like swimming because it’s a lifetime sport and it keeps you fit and healthy. WERE YOU SURPRISED TO QUALIFY FOR STATE? It was pretty impressive, because it was my first meet with my high school team. I wasn’t that surprised, though, because I had been getting faster over the summer. Before I turned 15, I was winning in my age group. NOW THAT YOU ARE ON THE LADUE SWIM TEAM, WILL YOU CONTINUE TO COMPETE WITH THE TIDERIDERS?
Yes. When swim season is over, I’ll continue to swim with CSP. It goes year-round. Sometimes we travel for meets. Many summer meets are in Carbondale, Ill., for example. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THIS SEASON? I would love to make more events at state and bring Ladue’s rally to state, as well. NOVEMBER 6, 2013

PARENT TRAP HOLIDAY GIFTS

by dr. tim jordan DADS HAVE A UNIQUE role to play in raising girls who are confident, resilient and happy. Here are a few gifts that dads can put under the tree for their daughters this holiday season and throughout the year. After recently spending two three-day weekend retreats in Pennsylvania and California with dads and their 7- to 9-year-old daughters, my belief in the power of play has been rekindled. And I don’t mean just play, I mean rough and tumble play. There is research that shows girls who grow up with dads who play in this way end up having higher levels of confidence and independence. Playtime with dad is usually louder, more spontaneous, stimulating, physical and out-of-the-box than time with mom. This teaches girls to be creative and curious and improves their ability to learn. Dads also tend to do more physical and verbal teasing with their daughters, and this kind of bantering improves a girl’s abilities to handle feedback and to toughen up a bit. Girls can be overly sensitive to feedback and criticism from teachers, coaches and peers, so they need to be able to take it and give it back. This will prepare them to handle boys and their mischief, too. Fathers also can encourage girls to stretch, take risks and to get out of their comfort zones. It’s good for girls to have experiences where they can initiate, create, push the envelope, make things happen and have adventures. This builds confidence, independence and a can-do attitude. Research has demonstrated that girls who have a lot of quality time with their dads develop a good sense of humor, and this in turn predicts that girls will grow up with a higher level of independence, confidence and happiness. Another gift dads can give to their daughters is a focus on non-physical qualities. Affirming virtues such as persistence, integrity, compassion, leadership, focus, creativity and self-efficacy can more than balance out the unhealthy cultural message that says that girls are mostly about a beautiful body and appearance. The best gift dads give to daughters is their presence, not their presents. And that’s especially true if their presence involves good, old fashioned rough and tumble play, bantering and adventures. New Options in Breast Enhancement Leading-edge solutions for breast augmentation, lift and reconstruction
COVER STORY WEST COUNTY PLASTIC SURGEONS OF
WASHINGTON [UNIVERSITY
by tony di martino ONCE MEANT MOSTLY FOR STARLETS and others in the entertainment Studies show they carry less industry, breast augmentation is now the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), implant operations have surged 40 percent in the past decade, with more than 300,000 women last year opting to boost their cup size. The procedure has gone mainstream among soccer moms and Sunday school teachers: The typical implant consumer is a 34-year-old mom who wants to enhance her bustline after nursing kids, ASAPS notes. “Many women today shun a blatantly augmented look,” says Dr. Terry Myckatyn, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at West County Plastic Surgeons of Washington University. “They’re in luck, because recent advances in design and technology now allow us to achieve more natural results than ever.” An innovative new type of implant helps make the natural look possible. Anatomically shaped implants, unlike traditional round implants, are designed to mirror a woman’s natural curves. “Round implants have more volume in the upper breast area, but the shaped implant has a gradually tapered slope, like a teardrop,” Myckatyn explains. Shaped (or gummy bear) implants are made of a dense, highly cohesive silicone gel filler. “They’re more solid than traditional implants, with a textured surface that functions like velcro, so they hold their shape and stay in place without rippling,” Myckatyn says. “They’re ideal for women who have very little breast tissue, such as small-breasted women or those who opt for reconstruction after mastectomy.”
risk of capsular contracture, the painful scar tissue that can form THE VECTRA 3-D IMAGING SYSTEM PHOTO COURTESY OF WEST COUNTY PLASTIC after breast augmentation, he SURGEONS OF WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY adds. “And, due to their density, there may be less risk of rupture and silicone migration.” Allergan, Sientra and Mentor, three leading implant manufacturers, now offer FDA-approved versions of the design. “They tend to be more expensive—it takes a higher degree of skill to insert them,” Myckatyn says. “For best results, choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who has plenty of experience working with this particular type of implant.” Shaped implants aren’t necessarily better than round ones, notes Dr. Marissa Tenenbaum, Myckatyn’s colleague. “It’s all about choosing what’s right for you, based on your body type and desired result,” she says. To help patients decide, West County Plastic Surgeons offers the VECTRA, a 3-D imaging system that shows patients how they’ll look with different sizes and styles of implants. “It visualizes what an implant can and can’t do for you—and why,” Tenenbaum says. “It’s a valuable tool that helps doctor and patient communicate.” A variety of implant styles, along with technology that allows patients to virtually ‘try them on,’ give patients and surgeons more choices. “We want you to like what you see when you look at yourself,” Tenenbaum says. “These tools help make it happen.”

[ full face-lifts: nips & tucks ]
Physical signs, not one’s chronological age, are factors that help determine if and when to have a face-lift. Some people simply don’t age well, or did things in their past that make them look older. Perhaps they smoked or had too much sun exposure. Most women who ask me for a face-lift are at least 50 years old, but sometimes younger. They’re emotionally ready and view their prospective surgery not as vanity, but as necessity. My staff heavily screens patients over the phone, letting them know what procedures I do and identifying the patient’s concerns. Then we meet and review what we see as problematic, and discuss what’s available for treatment. Rarely do I just perform a face-lift. I may add fat or remove it. I may define the lips with filler or erase nasolabial folds. However, there’s no substitute for a face-lift to take care of loose and hanging skin. It’s the gold standard. Women who undergo a face-lift don’t want to look ‘pulled’ or too different than themselves. They want to look fresh and rested and that’s what I give them.
>> dr. mike nayak, NAYAK PLASTIC SURGERY
A full face-lift is basically treating everything from the top of your head to your collarbone. It addresses the brows, the upper lids, the lower lids, the cheek shape, the jawline and neck. It includes adding fat, removing fat, lifting the skin by layers and, if necessary, using implants to replace facial bones that have withered away over time. Laser skin resurfacing or a chemical peel also may be necessary to smooth wrinkles. A full face-lift includes all the age-related procedures a person needs in one operation. Consequently, the details for one person’s operation can be wildly different from another person’s surgery. All the patient knows is that he or she is going to look better, younger, nicer. A natural-looking result requires treating all the layers of the face to keep harmony. You can’t just take up all the slack and put in big implants. If there is significant aging, you often have to address all the different changes, top to bottom, inside to outside, to keep the final result balanced. And that’s a tricky thing. The surgeon has to have a good eye for seeing what needs to be addressed—and recognizing a reasonable stopping point.

[ what men want…in plastic surgery ] According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the top five male cosmetic procedures for 2012 in ascending order were face-lift, breast reduction, liposuction, eyelid surgery and nose reshaping.
Can’t get rid of it?
>> dr. bruce kraemer, SLUCARE PLASTIC SURGEON
What a male wants from plastic surgery depends upon where he is in life. A young boy may have a facial feature that’s out of whack. But most often, it’s prominent ears. If he’s a teenager or young adult, it could be gynecomastia that’s bothering him. That’s when one or both breasts are enlarged. It’s embarrassing—some men can have B- to C-cup-sized breasts. The middle years are about skin care. As mens faces age, some get Botox to smooth their wrinkles. They might also have a skin peel. But in my experience, they don’t do dermal fillers as much as women do. This is also the time that some men may undergo a cosmetic procedure, such as rhinoplasty or chin augmentation. Face-lifts are a popular option for older men, too. And now, with obesity being a rampant problem, we’re seeing men and women who, after having bariatric surgery, want a tummy tuck to eliminate loose, hanging skin.
>> dr. samer cabbabe, ST. LOUIS PLASTIC SURGERY CONSULTANTS Plastic surgery is no longer just for women. Men want improvements with natural-looking results. Most men come to my practice for liposuction, face-lifts and gynecomastia repair. They also get liposuction on their abdomen, flanks and lower back. They simply want to look better and be more secure in their looks. I also do a lot of face-lifts on men, though not as many as I perform on women. Men are sometimes reluctant to have a face-lift because they feel they can’t conceal scarring with makeup or longer hair, as women do. Also, some of the older plastic surgeries I’ve seen feminized men’s faces. As an industry, we’ve refined techniques. We can do face-lifts with an incision concealed along the hairline and minimally invasive forehead lifts. A lot of men first ask about neck-lifts and ultimately wind up getting a full face-lift, which in my practice includes the neck. The face and neck are connected with a layer of skin. It’s hard to do one without the other.

blepharoplasty // “The current trend in blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) takes a more conservative approach,” says DR. JOHN HOLDS, AN OPHTHALMIC PLASTIC SURGEON WITH OPHTHALMIC PLASTIC AND COSMETIC SURGERY INC. “It calls for more fat repositioning, and less removal of skin and fat.” Often blepharoplasty is integrated with other facial procedures to achieve optimal results, Holds says. “If you have an upper blepharoplasty (to eliminate skin hanging over eyes), you often need a brow-lift to balance the look,” he says. Likewise, a lower-lid blepharoplasty (to remove bags below the eye) is often combined with a fat transfer or dermal filler to fill in sunken cheeks and soften nasolabial folds. Skin resurfacing and Botox also may be added. “You often need to treat the mid-face at the same time a lower eyelid lift is performed,” he notes. “Decide what your budget is and what you want treated. Make it clear to the surgeon. Sometimes, a patient can take an à la carte approach to plastic surgery if another procedure is recommended, and come back in a year or two when financially ready.”

[ bottoms up! how surgery can sculpt your sagging glutes ] Sagging, flat buttocks can make clothes shopping a real chore. A buttock lift can improve your bottom line. >> dr. michele koo, PLASTIC SURGEON
A buttock lift removes excess sagging skin and repositions the fat higher. It also hoists the posterior upper thigh, removing the rolls of skin under the fold of the buttock, smoothing the upper leg and thighs. The incision, which is lengthy, typically spans the entire upper buttock, just below the cleft. A buttock lift can be performed along with liposuction and a fat transfer. With liposuction, we can remove fat from the uppermost outer thigh and transfer it to the dome of the buttock for the sexy ‘junk in the trunk’ look. An additional fat transfer makes the derriere firmer and rounder. Results should last as long as the patient’s weight remains stable. Surgery is lengthy and recovery can be up to four to six weeks. Typically a patient returns to a sitting job in three to four weeks, and to a strenuous job in four to six weeks. Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight often request this procedure.
>> dr. stefan craig, RENAISSANCE PLASTIC SURGERY
Buttock augmentations can be performed with an artificial implant, or with the patient’s own fat to add volume. Implants have limited success. Although they can be performed through a hidden incision, they often result in secondary infections and complications. That’s why fat transfers are more frequently performed and what I prefer. I borrow fat from one portion of the patient’s body and transfer it into their buttocks to give it a ‘shelf’ look and a more rounded, curvy silhouette. Augmentation tends to be popular in young women, usually in their 20s to early 30s, who want the ‘J. Lo’ look. Patients who have undergone massive weight loss, i.e., 100 to 150 pounds, often seek buttock lifts. They have a lot of extra skin around the mid-section and have lost a lot of volume through the buttocks zone. In this scenario, we use some of the patient’s own tissue from their lower back to recreate a fuller buttocks appearance. This technique is typically reserved for patients who get what we describe as a body-lift procedure.

Trends in skin-tightening treatments For those looking to combat wrinkles and sagging skin without surgery, there are several options that can be used to improve the aging skin’s appearance. Two devices currently in use, utilize radio-frequency and the other, ultrasound energy. These machines heat the tissue which stimulates collagen growth, significantly improving skin-laxity and reducing wrinkles. The trendiest radio-frequency technologies are Thermage, Bodytite and Fractora. All these non-surgical approaches are a no down-time and no pain solution. In addition, Ultherapy is a popular ultrasound-style treatment and there are also various laser devices like Titan on the market which will achieve the same results. The skin-tightening treatments mentioned here are safe, reasonably effective and usually take 20 to 30 minutes each to administer. Getting treatment early in the aging process is considered best and patients are always advised to have realistic expectations. Not a one-time procedure, there are usually six treatments optimally performed at two-week intervals. Patients usually experience immediate tissue tightening and results should improve over time.

Individual results can vary and patients are encouraged to compare same-day before and after pictures, then if satisfied, they can to continue the treatments. If you have any questions or other topics you’d like to know more about, email us at DrHart@HartMD.com.

THE STEPS DIY PUMPKIN FACIAL MASK
by marylyn simpson AFTER THE PIES ARE BAKED
and the lanterns are carved, treat yourself to another seasonally appropriate pumpkin delight: a pumpkin-infused facial. Packed with alpha-hydroxy acids (natural exfoliators), vitamins A & C (anti-inflammatory agents) and UV protectors, pumpkins are good for more than stuffing your post-Thanksgiving belly and decorating your porch. Simple and effective, here are the steps to making an at-home pumpkin facial.
WHAT YOU NEED
■ 1 egg ■ 1 small pumpkin ■ 1 lemon ■ 1 T. honey ■ 1 T. plain yogurt
■ 1 copper or glass mixing bowl ■ 1 whisk ■ 1 wooden spoon ■ 1 food processor/ mixer
1> BEAUTY AND THE BEAT
Start with a medium-size copper or glass mixing bowl and one egg. Separate the egg whites from the yolk and pour the whites into the mixing bowl. While beating the whites, spritz lemon juice onto it to help maintain a fluffy consistency. Begin slowly beating the whites, gradually increasing your pace. Stop whisking once your eggs reach a fluffy texture. Over-whipped eggs will lose their desired foam-like consistency. A natural fine-line fighter and pore reducer, the whipped whites will keep your skin in top shape and create a foam-like base for your pumpkin mask.
2> PRETTY IN PUMPKIN
Scrape out the seeds and membranes of the small pumpkin. Next, cut the pumpkin into 4 pieces and microwave for 30 to 45 minutes until the flesh is soft. Put the soft pumpkin flesh (without skin) into a blender or food processor and mix until smooth. Alternatively, you can use canned pumpkin puree, but why let your decorative pumpkins go to waste? Mix 2 T. of the puree with the whipped whites.
3> HONEY DO
No One Will Know. Everyone Will Notice. Face, Breast & Body Surgical Procedures BOTOX® Cosmetic, Facial Fillers, Fat Injections Facial Lasers & Laser Hair Removal Medical Spa
Add a 1 T. plain yogurt and 1 T. honey to the bowl. The yogurt works as a great exfoliant, and the honey, an anti-bacterial agent, is a natural acne-fighter.
4> FRESH FACIAL
Using a large wooden spoon, mix ingredients together for 30 seconds. Apply pumpkin facial mask, avoiding contact with eyes. Leave on for 10 minutes. The yogurt and pumpkin will encourage cell-turnover and exfoliate dead skin cells, while the honey works to prevent and treat acne.
PLASTIC SURGERY & spa
5> THAT’S A WRAP
Once you’ve let your pumpkin mask cleanse and revitalize your pores, gently rinse with cool water to minimize pore size. Fun and effective, the pumpkin facial mask will leave your skin feeling recharged and rejuvenated all season long.

There was no single ah-ha moment when Diane Zueck gazed into the mirror and thought, Holy smokes, I look old— it’s time for a face-lift! “It was more of a gradual process that took place over several years,” recalls the 64-year-old retired schoolteacher. “I’d lost nearly 40 pounds and felt great, but my neck was sagging and my face looked gaunt. Plus, my eyelids were drooping so much that my grandkids kept asking me why I looked so tired and sad!” So Zueck talked to several surgeons, driving into St. Louis from her home near Carbondale, Ill. “They told me what they wanted to do, but they didn’t ask me what I wanted,” she says. “They said, ‘We’ll pull this, we’ll tighten that,’ but I didn’t sense that they took an artistic, individualized approach.” So she kept putting it off. Until she saw an ad for Nayak Plastic Surgery. “I was impressed by his credentials and his approach, so I went to see him.” She knew right away that Nayak was a good match: “He was completely different from other doctors I’d seen,” she says. “He sat down with my husband and me, looked me in the eyes and asked, ‘What is it you’re unhappy with?’ His manner was gentle but confident—and he really listened to me.” Nayak talked her out of a brow lift, explaining that, given her particular facial construction, it would raise her brows too high and give her that ‘deer-in-the-headlights’ look. Working together, doctor and patient decided on a lower face and neck-lift to correct Zueck’s sagging neck area; upper and lower eyelid surgery to combat deep bags and sagging lids; a transfer procedure that drew fat from her abdomen to replace lost volume in the cheek and eyes area; laser resurfacing to eliminate wrinkles; and, later, Juvederm injections to fill the folds that ran from her nose to her mouth and chin. The surgery took place last July. “The immediate aftermath wasn’t painful, just uncomfortable,” Zueck recalls. “I took pain meds for a day or two, then switched to extra-strength Tylenol. There wasn’t much bruising but quite a bit of swelling, and lots of redness from the laser, which the makeup artists at Dr. Nayak’s spa taught me how to cover up.” But the recovery period was a little more challenging. “I was absolutely exhausted and didn’t feel like going out for three weeks,” she admits. “I relied on my husband for everything, God bless him. My neck was so stiff, I couldn’t drive. But Dr. Nayak was always there for me, answering questions and following up. With every passing day, I felt—and looked—better and better.” Zueck enjoys the response she’s been getting from family and friends. “My husband and kids think I look amazing—and they’re relieved I still look like myself. And now that I look as good as I feel, I have more energy and confidence.” Even more gratifying is the reaction she gets from complete strangers. “When I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago, the assistant who took my health history couldn’t believe I was 64,” she says. “She thought I was in my 40s. And just the other day, I tried to use my senior discount at the drugstore—and they made me show my I.D.!”

December 20 to 29 Touhill Performing Arts Center
COVER STORY
SAINT LOUIS] BALLET
by rebecca koenig AS THE DELICATE MUSIC OF THE CELESTA SWELLS, the Sugar
Plum Fairy dances her way across the snowy stage. Each December, people flock to the Touhill Performing Arts Center to watch the magic of the The Nutcracker unfold in holiday splendor. But with four annual productions, original choreography, collaborative projects and more than 20 professional dancers, Saint Louis Ballet offers audiences much more than a once-a-year outing. Artistic director Gen Horiuchi brings a rich background to Saint Louis Ballet. He grew up dancing in his parents’ studio in Tokyo, and at age 15, he won a gold medal at Prix de Lausanne, the prestigious annual international ballet competition in Switzerland. The prize came with a scholarship, which he used to attend the School of American Ballet in New York City. For 15 years, he danced as a principal with the New York City Ballet and on Broadway in shows such as Cats. Other projects included choreographing the opening ceremony of the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Saint Louis Ballet invited Horiuchi to be the company’s new director in 1999. When he arrived in 2000, he says, there were only seven professional dancers, and the school had only 40 students. “My ambition was to bring the school and company to the national level,” Horiuchi says. Now, the company has 21 dancers and the school enrolls 320 students. Annual auditions attract dancers from all over the world. Perhaps the most beloved of all ballets, The Nutcracker is a great way to acclimate people to dance performances. “The Nutcracker is the introduction to the ballet for a general audience,” Horiuchi says. “With the holiday theme, it’s very accessible to
all ages. I always keep in mind to keep it very simple and true to the story of the ballet so everyone can enjoy the theater experience. At the same time, I like to introduce the spectacle of a professional dance performance, to present it as a wonderful theater experience.” GEN HORIUCHI Other shows stretch across PHOTO BY BILL BARRETT genre and style. In February, the company presents Love Is In The Air, a romantic contemporary performance with choreography by Horiuchi and Tony Award-winning choreographer Twyla Tharp. Prior to the Valentine’s Day performance, guests can enjoy Dinner At The Ballet, a fundraising gala. In May, the score of Sergei Prokofiev will accompany the performance of Cinderella, a full-length classic. Not many communities can boast their own professional ballet company, and Horiuchi hopes dance lovers will embrace their hometown’s special cultural institution. “I want the community to feel or think that this is kind of like the Cardinals, our own ballet company in this city,” he says. “I want people to come see the performance, and if they like it, support the nonprofit organization.”

so sweet. For as long as Jen Brooks can remember, her family has celebrated something they call ‘Good Meat Day,’ a unique tradition that honors their Polish background. During one Saturday in December, the Matusiak (Brooks’ maiden name) male family members visit Piekutowski’s, a traditional Polish deli in north St. Louis, to pick up Polish sausage, Krakow (a Polish lunch meat) and rye bread for a later meal. They then head to Rigazzi’s for lunch. Meanwhile, the women gather at Brooks’ parents home in O’Fallon. “We create a Christmas craft with all the kids and bake,” Brooks says. “When the guys return home, we watch Christmas Vacation and eat taco soup. We even drink out of moose mugs, like the ones they have in the movie.” The Matusiak patronage JEN BROOKS’ SISTER, ELLEN SANDERS, of Piekutowski’s goes back SHOWING OFF A CHRISTMAS CRAFT generations. “My grandpa and his dad, Alexander, who came over from Poland, would go to Piekutowski’s all the time, because it was in their neighborhood,” Brooks says. “As my dad got older, they kept going, and then my brothers started going, and now my husband and son go, too. Every year it seems to get a little bigger.” The family’s holiday tradition began when Brooks’ grandfather, who spent time in California and Maryland as an employee of McDonnell Douglas, made visiting Piekutowski’s a priority during holiday trips home. Twenty-one people will be celebrating Good Meat Day this year, including Brooks’ parents, her six siblings, significant others and seven grandchildren. “The cool thing is there’s no stress,” Brooks says. “You don’t have to get dressed up, you don’t have to worry about presents. We all just spend time together.”

The holiday season
is for merrymaking, presents and parties. But it’s also about giving back. For the past five years, Amy Mayfield and her teenage daughters, Bridget and Brynn, have spent Christmas Eve at Plaza Frontenac wrapping presents to benefit Nurses for Newborns Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing infant mortality, child abuse and neglect. The Nurses for Newborns gift wrapping fundraiser lasts the duration of the holiday season, from Black Friday through Christmas Eve. Volunteers wrap shoppers’ gifts for a small fee, which goes directly to support the organization. Last year, the fundraiser contributed $16,000, says Claire Devoto, Nurses for Newborns director of development. In the past, Mayfield has organized and run the effort. Her first year, there weren’t enough volunteers on Christmas Eve, which is how she and her girls, students at Kirkwood High School and Nipher Middle School, started their holiday tradition. “We did it first out of necessity,” Mayfield says. “It was the one shift I didn’t have enough people for, and my girls had so much fun.” Now every Christmas Eve, the Mayfield women spend their morning and early afternoon wrapping gifts before heading to Mass at St. Francis Xavier College Church with the rest of the family. Often, the interaction with customers is the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit, Mayfield says. “We’ve even wrapped engagement rings, and one year we had a man who was giving his mom a cruise and a car, and he had us wrap the keys,” she recalls. “Some of the stories of the gifts and who they’re going to are worth a million bucks.” Before this Christmas Eve tradition started, Mayfield’s daughters had organized their own annual fundraiser for NFNF. “They would have a hot cocoa stand in our driveway on New Year’s Eve day,” Mayfield says. “They sent out emails and put flyers in their friends’ backpacks before winter break.” Their impulse to help is not surprising, given Mayfield’s attitude. “My husband and I really try to do service, and giving back to the community is very important to us,” Mayfield says.

I REMEMBER WHEN Frazer’s Brown Bag was
one of the only Benton Park restaurants. Even though the area has grown up all around this place, Frazer’s is a staple here, one that is now celebrating its 20th anniversary. That’s really no surprise, considering what the place has to offer. First there’s the ambience, a kind of grunge meets cool. A redesign 10 years ago reconfigured the space into a large bar room with crackled mosaic floors and an adjoining dining room with break-out rooms. Both have doors that open onto Pestalozzi Street and a patio out front with funky tables and colorful seating. A side patio is filled with charm, lined with tall, verdant canon, strung with twinkle lights and equipped with overhead misters for the heat (and the mosquitoes). Frazer’s is known for solidly reliable food; everything
is house-made and many dishes are memorable. The New Orleans BBQ Shrimp ($9) is a good choice to start with, soaked in Cajun spices and oil and served with a big slice of oiled, toasted French bread. Also good were the Zucchini Rolls ($6), a cold starter of lightly roasted zucchini rolled around feta, parsley and mint and lightly drizzled with olive oil and lemon. Crisp and refreshing, the rolls had a pleasant blend of creamy cheese and pungent lemon. A large bowl of Cioppino ($19) was teeming with tuna, salmon, clams, shrimp and mussels (mostly the fish), in a tomato-based chowder. It was good in a hearty way, but devoid of the delicate complexities of others I’ve tasted, things like fennel and red pepper flakes. A special of Roast Pork Loin illustrated a Frazer’s strength: homemade comfort foods. The roast pork loin
($18) was prepared with bacon strips and garlic cloves stuffed inside the pork to add flavor and moistness. The two pieces were delicious, slightly crisped outside and tender inside. The accompanying mashed potatoes were delicious, but the sautéed spinach had way too much garlic. The don’t-miss dish is the Lobster Boil ($37), a ‘special’ frequently on the menu that is teeming with goodies (and could feed two): lobster tails, mussels, clams, boiled red potatoes, corn on the cob, shrimp, green beans and sausage. Presented in a bowl of buttery broth, the food absorbs some of that yummy fat. Desserts really shone. Our Key Lime Pie ($6), a menu staple, had intense flavor and a thick, delicious graham crust. The Chocolate-Coconut Sorbet ($2), too, was brimming with both of its defining flavors (and some coconut bits).

CIOPPINO | This is a fish stew originating in San Francisco, often mistaken for the Italian cacciucco, to which it is similar. But cioppino is Italian-American, with a tomato base and an assortment of seafood.
I’m just really self-taught. I worked in a lot of different restaurants, read a lot of cookbooks.
KEY LIME | The Key lime, indigenous to the Florida Keys, is more tart and bitter than the standard Persian lime and makes a unique pie filling.
SORBET | Not to be confused with sherbet, this is a frozen water dessert flavored
with fruit, wine or liqueur.

BRIDGE WITH BL♠ND
DECLARER PLAY often is dictated by proper technique. When we have no information concerning defender’s cards or suit distribution, we need to rely on ‘skill and cunning,’ i.e. technique, to bring our contract home. South bids to three no trump, can you find the right line? The bidding: N E S W pass pass 1 ♣ pass 1♦ pass 2nt pass 3nt pass pass pass The opening lead: the ♥ three: The hand: NORTH ♠ Q 10 7 ♥ 10 9 8 ♦ K 10 9 4 ♣ A 8 7 WEST EAST ♠ K 9 3 ♠ 8 5 4 ♥ K 6 5 3 2 ♥ 7 4 ♦Q 7 2 ♦A 6 5 ♣ 6 3 ♣ J 10 5 4 2 SOUTH ♠ AJ62 ♥ AQJ ♦ J83 ♣ KQ9 The right line and the proper technique is to keep ‘the dangerous hand’ off lead. With a choice of finesses the ♠ play, even if it loses, keeps the defenders from attacking ♥s again. Also if the ♠ King is onside, we have just made our contract. When the finesse loses, we still have time to make the ♦ play. Since West would have certainly over-called with the ♠ King, the ♥ King five times, and the ♦ Ace, we can come to the right ♦ play. The result is three ♠s , two ♥s, three ♦s, three ♣s, making five! At duplicate, this is a great score.

Note: if we take the ♦ finesse first and guess it right (playing West for the Queen) we can only come to nine tricks.
tip of the day]
Q. Kenny, my partner keeps talking about keeping the dangerous hand off lead. Which means? A. The dangerous hand is the one that can lead through the weakness in your hand to their partner’s strength. It is good declarer technique to keep the dangerous hand off lead so the opponents can’t attack the weakness of your hand successfully.

this was a huge disappointment. It tried too hard to be the next Pulp Fiction and instead resulted in a crass conglomeration of gratuitous sex and violence. Plot-wise, it’s about a trio of drug entrepreneurs, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Javier Bardem (who looked and acted like the village idiot in this movie). The subtext has something to do with primal urges like sex and predation, with plenty of footage devoted to cryptic messages about greed, consequences and fate. Especially disappointing was watching all that star power go to waste: Penelope Cruz was mousey and school-girlish; Pitt’s lines were more incoherent than his Chanel No. 5 commercial; and Cameron Diaz’s wardrobe and makeup hit you over the head with its dominatrix imagery. Her character already had two cheetahs as pets, for God’s sake. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Don’t bother unless you’re just curious. —D.W.

GRAVITY 3-D >> Put down this magazine, lace up your sneakers
and run to the nearest theater to see Gravity. This movie is incredible. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star as astronauts who become untethered from the satellite they’re repairing and must propel themselves across the vacuum of space to a ship that will return them to Earth. The story is simple, but emotionally gripping, and Bullock’s raw, physical performance is outstanding. Visually and aurally stunning, the cinematography and sound effects put the viewer right there in space, making the intense action sequences all the more exhilarating. Even if you usually have no interest in adventure movies, this is an experience not to be missed. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? YES. —R.K. VIEWED AT MOOLAH THEATRE

SEVEN YEARS AGO, the new development of Enclave Bellerive aroused the curiosity of Lonny and Becky Jay. When the first model home became available in 2007, the Jays were the first residents to move into the exclusive gated community in Creve Coeur. “We loved the style of the home, the layout of the proposed development and the idea of a gated community,” Lonny Jay says. “We were headed into retirement within a few years and we thought it would be a great place to have if we traveled or spent more time outside of St. Louis.” The design of the 5,600-square-foot home is its most unique feature, Jay says. The home is built in the Jeffersonian style, a form of architecture patterned after Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and his other properties. It features exterior grand white columns, three bedrooms, five bathrooms, high vaulted ceilings and a lower level with media room, hobby room, extra storage and an exercise facility. “It’s got crown molding and everything is high quality, including the windows and the appliances,” Jay says. The gathering room, with a floor-to-ceiling Missouri stone fireplace, is where the Jays spent many relaxing nights together.
“It, along with the kitchen, are where we spent 80 percent of our time,” Jay says. “The whole house is very casual, and we’re very casual people. The space easily seats 10 people and is a comfortable, warm room with vaulted ceilings and a wet bar.” This family room was the site of many gatherings, including Christmas and Thanksgiving celebrations with the couple’s three children, their spouses and five grandchildren. “We always had a gettogether in the home for holiday dinners, and we really enjoyed the camaraderie before and after the meal,” Jay says. Even though their children are well into adulthood, they would often spend the night. The security that comes with living in a gated community was a major perk for the Jays, who spend much of the year in Florida, but it isn’t the only benefit. “When you buy in Enclave Bellerive, the lawn maintenance and grounds are included,” Jay says. Because the Jays spend so much time away from St. Louis, they decided to sell their home here. “It’s a great house, but when you’re only in it a couple months of the year, it’s more than we needed to have,” Jay says. “We’re entering another phase, which is retirement in Florida.”

“
MARGIE KUBIK has always been in sales. “It suits me—I have a high energy level, and I like variety and challenges,” she says. But as her four kids (now grown) became more independent, she needed an outlet for that energy. A friend suggested real estate. She’s been in the business since 1988, moving to Gladys Manion last year. She lives in Warson Woods with her husband, dentist Frank Kubik. “I grew up in Normandy. My father passed away when I was 6 years old. My mother always worked two jobs to support us. She taught me the value of working hard. She always insisted that I get a college degree. I graduated from University of Missouri with a B.A. in business administration. My first sale was a small bungalow in Maplewood. I was working on a sticky loan commitment issue, and I was a nervous wreck. When we finally closed, they were so excited! I think my commission was $700, but it felt like a million dollars. They sold the place five years later for twice what they paid for it. Some deals are just plain bad. In that case, my advice is, ‘walk away.’ I found that difficult at the beginning of my career, but sometimes it’s the best course of action. My job is to represent my clients, and their needs are paramount. I think the market is improving each and every month. Clients are getting more savvy and knowledgeable, and they’re making better decisions. Anyone who wants to get into real estate must understand it takes a few years to build a clientele. The schedule allows some flexibility, but your time is not your own. You work when it’s convenient for your clients. I’m available to them 24/7. I wouldn’t want them to miss an opportunity because I wasn’t around. When a home has been on the market a while and isn’t selling, it’s as difficult and painful for the agent as it is for the homeowner. I stay in constant touch with my clients and suggest home improvements to entice buyers. I’ll advertise, hold open houses, re-write ad copy, take new photos—anything to get possible buyers through the home! This is a stressful business, and there are many sleepless nights. To unwind, I run and lift weights. Running is a great stress reliever. I also can be found relaxing on my screened porch with a Kindle and a cup of coffee.”

HOMEWORK] DEAR HOMEWORK,
I recently purchased a French-style ranch home and intend to make significant changes. The existing windows are in good shape, but the roof and landscaping need to be replaced. The home sits on a prominent corner lot and I’d like to create a major upgrade in curb appeal. What could be done here without too much construction or expense? ———CONFOUNDED IN CREVE COEUR
DEAR CONFOUNDED IN CREVE COEUR,
AFTER
You call the architecture French, but it’s too horizontal to be French. The façade is also very flat, giving it a bland feel. To modify these issues, I suggest raising the entry feature and adding customary details such as the bulls-eye window and coach lamps. Two tiny dormer windows help bring dimension to the roof-scape and draw the eye upward. Next, I’d like to create an entry court defined by a low, curving brick wall and ornament-capped brick piers. This helps ease the flat feel of the façade and helps the home preside over its corner site. I would paint the brick a darker stone color to contrast with the windows and gutters. This makes them stand out as a detail, something that is currently lost. The French Blue of the shutters picks up the blue in the new slate-blend asphalt roof. Two columnar evergreens help break up the length of the façade and add an additional vertical element, while reinforcing the symmetry of the composition. Tall maple trees near the curb would help frame the house and add great fall color. Now I feel the house speaks with at least a French-Canadian accent and could be implemented in phases—the entry court could, for example, be added later. Hope that helps. ———HOMEWORK
