[ letter from the editor ] Our school open houses listing this issue recalls for me the excitement of that time in my own life when I waited anxiously to hear if we were ‘in’ or ‘out.’ By ‘we’ I mean my child and me. Because when it comes to private school, it’s a family affair. Since she was accepted into the elite school of her choice (really my choice; she just liked the art wing), the memories are largely fond ones. But I can relate to Dr. Jordan’s misgivings about the pressures of this process, which he addresses in his parenting column today. For one thing, it’s very easy to be lured by the attractions of status, i.e., My child got into the best school in town. But the reality is that the best school in town is not necessarily the best placement for every child. Mine, for example, called it quits in 10th grade, when she declared that the art wing notwithstanding, she wanted more out of high school than a great transcript. Then she went to prom in a tutu and combat boots. Does where a child goes to school impact his or her success in later life? I think an argument can be made for both yes and no. The relationships (connections) made during college and even prep school can be invaluable; there’s a reason for the saying: It’s not what you know, but who. Yet it is also true that talented, motivated people can make their own opportunities. After all, schools can accept only so many kids; just as with the Ivies, the hardest part is getting in, not staying in. Maybe the best strategy is to approach these choices with heightened awareness—about our youngsters and ourselves. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief se sp e

Great Gadgets
Gift It Green cloth boxes come in three sizes and are reusable. Each sender can add their name to the inside flap and just ‘re-gift’ the box (not the contents) for totally eco-friendly packaging. Costs are $14 to $18, a small price to pay for Mother Earth. The impact? If every American family used these for just three gifts a year, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields!

What’s your favorite Thanksgiving memory?
For most of my TV career I’ve worked on Thanksgiving, but once during the 1990s I had the entire weekend off. So I took my wife and kids to Chicago to see my mom and dad. My father and I were close, but he rarely expressed his emotions. I mean, there was never any question that he loved my brother and sister and me, but he didn’t talk about it. Anyway, after dinner he told us he had something to say. He stood up and said, through tears, “I want you to know that tonight, being with my family, I feel like the luckiest man in the world.” It was so out of character for him. We lost him just a few years later. I’ll always remember that Thanksgiving. —mike bush, KSDK
“blue bloods ”
phraseology [ freyz • ŏ • lō • gy ]
Believe it or not, this doesn’t refer to local hockey fans. It originated as a Spanish phrase, sangre azul, and was used by the oldest, finest and snootiest Castilian families when they were bragging about their purebred lineage. Such Spaniards took great pains to point out that they were no relation to the dark-skinned Moors who had once controlled Spain. As proof, they would point to their veins, whose blue tint showed up clearly against their relatively pale skin. The phrase was adapted into English in the 1830s. By the time it was used by Anthony Trollope in the 1880s, it had become quite common. Then as now, it refers to the rarefied blood that supposedly throbs in the veins of the oldest and most aristocratic families, be they Spanish, English or American.

Goddesses and Muses will walk among guests at the annual Sheer Elegance gala and fashion show, benefiting the Mathews-Dickey Girls’ Program. The event, themed Elements of Style & Grace, is inspired by Greek mythology. “Our 20 honorees, or Muses, will open the show by walking the runway with celebrity escorts, and 20 of our younger girls will be designated as Goddesses,” explains Barbara Washington, vice president of public relations and special events at Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club. “It will be a stylish affair, fit for Aphrodite herself!” Mount Olympus was the furthest thing from Martin Mathews’ and the late Hubert ‘Dickey’ Ballentine’s minds back in 1960, when the two neighborhood baseball coaches started an athletic club to keep young men in north St. Louis City out of trouble. The club grew rapidly, adding programs for girls in 1986. Today, Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club serves thousands of young men and women annually and recently opened a new athletic facility in Bellfontaine Neighbors. “Our Girls’ Program develops the athletic, educational, social, cultural, career and leadership potential of our members, and provides them with positive role models,” Washington says. “More than 10,000 young women, ages 5 through 18, participate in activities and classes focused on instilling the desire to achieve, gain self-confidence and pursue dreams while learning respect, restraint and responsibility.” The Sheer Elegance fundraiser, Dec. 8 in the Khorassan Room at the Chase Park Plaza, is chaired by registered nurse and community volunteer Mimi Londoff and co-chaired by Maryville University vice president Nina Caldwell. Honorary co-chairs are Lynn Broeg, Carol Voss and actress Anna Maria Horsford of BET’s Reed Between the Lines. Emceeing the show are Wendy Wiese of Nine Network and Christine Buck of KPLR 11. Fox 2’s Bonita Cornute will be on hand to present door prizes. Accepting the Sheer Elegance Award, presented to community leaders for their outstanding achievements, are Cynthia Crim, foundation program manager at Commerce Bank, Nicholas Karakas, chairman of Marcus Distributors, Eleanor Higgins, regional marketing director of American Family Insurance, and Judy Best-Person of Best Talent Center, who also serves as choreographer for the event. Fashions will be provided by Brown Shoe Co., XoXo, As You Wish, Lee J’s, SofistaFunk Skirt Co. of New York, Trixxi, and Project Runway designers Michael Drummond, Laura Kathleen, A.J. Thouvenot and Qristyl Frazier. Celebrity models include Jennie Runk, featured in Vogue and Glamour; Katie Kearney, Miss Missouri USA 2012 and daughter of former football Cardinal Tim Kearney; and Christina Mendez, featured in Essence and Latina. “But Sheer Elegance is about more than fashion,” Washington says. “It’s a day of style and substance. We’re recognizing these young ladies for their outstanding achievements in academics, community service and citizenship.” Washington and the Mathews-Dickey development committee hope to raise at least $130,000 for the Girls’ Program. “We want to empower these young women to reach for the stars. They can’t do it until they learn that a whole universe of possibilities awaits them.”

talk [towns] by bill beggs jr.
Same-sex marriage is the topic of Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, the book a Brentwood resident wants off the shelves at the library. The contention that a man may only marry a woman in the eyes of God is the crux of the matter here, of course. And samesex marriage is illegal in Missouri, so far, anyhow… But, so what? Lots of things kids read in books that anyone with a library card can check out are illegal in Missouri—like vampirism. But from the illustration on the cover of two furry critters that look like teddy bears, the characters in Uncle Bobby’s Wedding aren’t even people. Maybe we should start worrying about what’s going on in our kids’ collections of stuffed animals? If anyone thought execs at Taubman Centers, developer of one of the two outlet malls under construction in Chesterfield Valley, are overconfident—if not completely nuts—an investment research firm says Taubman is fit as a fiddle. Zacks Equity Research says the compay’s financial performance in the third quarter was better than expected. Taubman has been busier than a beehive, in this hemisphere and in Asia. As the concrete outside walls of Taubman Prestige Outlets Chesterfield are raised, the company is working on a shopping mall in Puerto Rico and just broke ground on a similar project in Sarasota, Fla. Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, Taubman is in joint ventures to build shopping malls in South Korea and China. If your surgery center allows stays up to 72 hours for recuperation, does that make your enterprise a hospital? Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur, formerly known as St. John’s Mercy, and another area hospital sure think so. The
of the
flap originated when Chesterfield city officials in August approved overnight stays at an orthopedic surgery center operated by Dr. George Paletta. The hospitals assert that Paletta’s (pardon me) operation is therefore a hospital and should be licensed as such. One might not have to read too much fine print to surmise that, in order to attain such licensing, Paletta and a sizable sum of money would have to part ways. The arrest of an outof-town couple at a local Walmart put my knucklehead sensor on high alert. Were they trying to score more than their minimum daily allotment of pseudoephedrine, the allergy medicine used to cook meth— maybe right there in the store, as happened at another area Walmart last summer? Were they dressed inappropriately, as in those pictures of Walmart shoppers that lurk in the Internet’s darker corners? Nope, even sexier! This Jefferson County duo was trying to pass counterfeit currency in a store where clerks use special pens to discover it. You’d think someone trying to pull off a federal crime would want to fly under the radar, but the dude has a heavily tattooed neck. Kirkwood cops assisted the feds, who found printing equipment at one suspect’s residence. Colonel Sanders was not invited. Granted, his deadness would have prevented his attendance at Chickenfest in Maplewood’s Ryan Hummert Park recently, where dozens of keepers and their fine, feathered friends clucked away. Maplewood and Richmond Heights hen keepers were represented on a temperate Saturday last month, and they competed for largest egg and prettiest bird, among other birdbrained contests. Those with an unexplainable chicken phobia would
be pleased to know that the birds were caged or corded on one leg as they tried to peck the grounds clean. They wouldn’t have gone anywhere, anyhow. City folk may not realize that chickens can’t really fly, or that they’re kind of mellow unless they’ve reason to squawk. None crowed, of course, as roosters are verboten in most any municipality’s fowl ordinance. For most, a mother’s death is devastating. Even more so for Claire McCaskill, Missouri’s Democratic senator, who was in the political fight of her life against Republican challenger Todd Akin when this magazine went to press. Betty Anne McCaskill, one of her daughter’s biggest cheerleaders, passed away Oct. 29 in St. Louis, where she’d lived with her daughter and son-in-law since 2005. In 1971, the elder McCaskill became the first woman elected to the city council in Columbia, Mo., and in 1978 lost a race for the state General Assembly to Leroy Blunt, father of Roy Blunt. The younger Blunt, a Republican, is Missouri’s other senator. She managed to appear in a campaign ad over the summer for her daughter. Ever folksy, during her daughter’s 2006 Senate bid, mom said: “I’m the dog, and she’s the pony.” Cops in Town & Country, Manchester and elsewhere warn motorists and pedestrians of an old scam that’s been gaining traction recently along Manchester Road in West County. It goes something like this: As you’re walking across a store parking lot or standing next to your car at the gas pump, a woman approaches you, in tears. She needs money for any number of things: Her kids are hungry; she needs enough gas to get to Cape Girardeau;
[ TT Trivia ] What does PETA stand for?
her abusive boyfriend is after her. Point is, they’re all stories, and she’s a scam artist—an actress, nothing more. Cops recommend you politely refuse further conversation, and as you walk away let the person know you’re calling 911 to secure police assistance. Washington U. has a medical school, and research continues using live animals, such as lab rats. Animal activists— don’t call them ‘extremists,’ because for these folks, meat eaters, fur wearers and anyone who has anything to do with leather are the extremists here— hit town last weekend. A conference, Free the Animals, was slated to begin with a film screening in U. City and wind up with a protest Nov. 5 at the university. Yes, once you’ve seen an animal with electrodes in its head, you can’t unsee it. Same goes for visiting a loved one with tubes everywhere, succumbing to cancer. The activists contend that computer modeling is just as good as animal research. But for testing potentially life-saving medicines? Doubtful. As far as customer traffic to Old Orchard businesses was concerned, it was a bridge too far for six months. Work to replace the span carrying Murdoch Road over the railroad tracks began in April, and it wrapped up Oct. 16 with a parade of Webster Groves fire trucks, public-works vehicles and cars from the nearby Subaru dealership. Salespeople there must have twiddled thumbs more than they’d have liked during a lull that some business owners claim took a bite of as much as 50 percent. Cravings, the wedding-cake baker, expressed relief with a bridgeshaped creation. All edible, except for toy cars going either way on the chocolate pavement.

Orders are accepted until Dec. 17, but Dec. 5 is the cut-off date for a ‘North Pole’ postmark.

bookshelf book friends] by rebecca koenig About the club Helene Sherman started the Book Friends club in 2006 to help her friends meet regularly and stay current in each others’ lives in a meaningful way. “These are women who are high school friends and neighbors. We met each other as our children grew up and in general have lived in the same community all our lives,” Sherman says. “Very St. Louis, I suppose.” The club meets every six weeks at a St. Louis Bread Company, alternating between novels and historical works. About the book Plantation racial politics come into play in The Kitchen House, Kathleen Grissom’s novel about a white servant girl negotiating the 18th-century worlds of free white masters and enslaved black laborers. “It contrasted with the last couple books we had, which were serious and somewhat tragic,” Sherman says. “This has more with human interest in mind.”

>> A moving novel, filled with suspense, about an exceptional heroine who endured many emotional situations and dealt with them as best she could. I was impressed with the way the author presented the story about white and black indentured slavery. - Sandi Super >> I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was well-written and had rich character development. I thought it was filled with action, drama and emotional intensity. - Toby Cremer >> The book offered a look into a little-known aspect of plantation life. The characters were richly drawn and the read was very enjoyable. - Debbi Musen >> I thought the book was better written than most romance novels. Alternating the two main characters’ points of view made for interesting contrasts. - Barbara Winnerman >> I thought the book was very true to the times of slavery and the caste system on southern plantations. It was a combination of Gone With the Wind and The Help. - Lynda Sharpe >> I liked how we got to know the characters and how they interacted with each other. - Sheri Seige

[SNAPPED!]
The economy has not been kind to me. In other words, I’m broke. How do I let people know that this year I won’t be giving gifts to anyone other than —Don’t Want to Be a Scrooge my children?
Patty: Sallow hard and send out an email to let people know your focus is going to be on just your kids. You don’t have to tell them you’re broke, but you might want to mention the need to ‘tighten your belt.’ Do it now before the early shoppers have already picked out your perfect gift. Don’t be surprised, though, if you still receive presents. Your reaction should not be to run out and reciprocate but rather send a nice thank-you note. I can’t decide if I should suggest homemade gifts; for my friends and family, that would be a lot of woven potholders. Raschelle: Don’t explain, don’t complain. And whatever you do, don’t make gifts! For the love of Pete, you’re not a small child anymore, plus they never turn out like the pictures! Instead, why don’t you organize a bit of volunteering for you and your loved ones as a way to give back to your community? There’s nothing nicer than coming together to count your blessings and serve others, no matter what your circumstances are. I am so tired of receiving holiday newsletters. Friends just use them as a way to brag about their exotic trips and amazing children. Enough! Just wish me a happy holiday and forget the newsletter. —take me off your mailing list

Patty: I have mixed emotions about holiday newsletters. I do like to see what everyone looks like and has been up to in the past year, but I am annoyed about the over-the-top braggadocio of some. No one ever tells you about their child who was held back a year in school, only about the one that gets into Harvard. I think we’ve all gotten a holiday newsletter that didn’t make us jolly, just mad. So, my advice is to review and toss. At the slightest hint of bragging, recycle that newsletter. For those of you who send them, there is this new invention called Facebook. It allows you to post all day long about you, your kids and your trips. Use that for bragging and donate the money you save in postage from the newsletter to the 100 Neediest Cases. Raschelle, do I sound like Scrooge? Raschelle: Of course you do, Patty, but I’ve grown used to it and find it charming. Can we all just lighten up a bit here? It’s a holiday greeting card, not an invitation to a duel. Let’s put this all into some perspective. I love seeing pictures of my friends strolling along the Champs-Elysees, and I enjoy hearing how their kids are growing and thriving, despite the reminder that I’m getting older. It’s entertaining and enlightening, and I have to say, it’s one of the best parts of the holiday season. It actually helps me bridge the long distances in some of my friendships. Which brings me to my point: Relax, stop competing with everyone, and start enjoying what you’re doing and what you’ve got. And if you really hate the holiday letters, don’t read them. You’re in charge of what you see and do. It’s really that simple. >> Patty Hannum received coal in her Christmas stocking from one of her brothers when she was a young, sensitive child. She has never really forgiven him. >> Raschelle Burton never drinks gin.

DayMakers] by catherine klene
Rhonda Ochoa was trapped. She spent her days crunching numbers at a corporate desk job in Colorado, but she longed to make a real difference in the world. So seven years ago she traded in the spreadsheets for a stethoscope and went back to school to study veterinary medicine. Today, Ochoa is an ICU technician at Veterinary Special Services in Manchester, where she sees up to 40 patients a day. It’s stressful, messy and even a little dangerous—and she’s never been happier.
Q: Did you always want to work with animals? A: My entire life. Even as a little girl, I always wanted to bring everything home. If they were injured
or I found them, they came home, from frogs and birds to cats and rabbits. And we always had a cat, dog or both.
Q: You used to work in accounting. Why did you make such a big career change? A: I was miserable every day. I chose to leave the business world and got my degree in veterinary medicine. Now
I love going to work. I went from heels and business suits to scrubs and tennis shoes. It was an awesome change.
Q: How do you connect with sick or injured animals? A: When I see a new patient, I always try to make friends. I let them sniff me, get to know me. You can usually tell by the look in their eye if they are mean or frightened. We do a lot of work for Stray Rescue, so those are our trickiest patients. I took an online class and am certified in animal behavior. I plan to get an article published on the importance of incorporating emotion into ICU treatment. It’s nice to crawl into a kennel with a dog, pet them and handfeed them. Giving them attention is all part of the healing process.

Let’s get something straight.
Q: What’s the weirdest animal you’ve worked with? A: At a previous practice, we had a lady who owned a petting zoo, and she had some camels and ostriches. It was almost like calf-roping—you have to get hold of them and not let go! emotional owners? A: At first it’s very intense. They are all concerned, and it’s hard to communicate. But they’re so grateful once they see their pet improving, and it feels good to comfort them. We had a chinchilla who came in, and the kids who owned it were jumping up and down and were so excited to take it home.

Q: How has this job changed you? A: I truly have a passion for what I do, which I never felt when I was in accounting. I also have a lot more
compassion for people now.
Q: What should more people understand about pets? A: No matter what you look like or what day you’ve had, animals love you, and they should be treated that
way, too. They need to be a part of your family and not just sit in your backyard or roam the neighborhood. They should be a part of your life.

parent trap Debunking the Myth
by dr. tim jordan
]
When Mark was 5 years old, he took up the accordion. That led to the keyboard in high school and college, and playing in bands to help pay for school. Today, he owns and runs a successful company that sells music equipment internationally. I love hearing stories like Mark’s. They reinforce my belief that there really is no set path for kids to follow to find their life’s work and become successful. Unfortunately, today’s parents often view their children’s education with panic and focus on a misguided destination: ‘the best college.’ Go to a great preschool, so you can get into a good grade school; get good grades so you will be accepted into a top secondary school and top-tier college. Go to a top college so you will get a good job and make a lot of money.” Even kids numbly repeat this life-path to me. Reliable research suggests that people who are motivated by externals end up unhappy and unhealthy adults. That certainly is not what we want for our children. Nor do we want them to waste their entire childhood focused on very adult goals. That brings us to the annual ritual of open houses for private schools. I suspect no other city in the world puts so much energy and emphasis on where you go to high school! The pressure on kids is tremendous. They are made to feel it’s an all-or-nothing deal. If they get into their No. 1 choice, everyone is ecstatic; if they don’t, life as they know it is over. In his recent book, Not Quite Adults, Richard Setterstein cites research that shows going to a top-tier college does not significantly improve a child’s life chances over those who attend less-elite schools. And after controlling for family background, SAT scores and family income, studies show that lifetime earnings rarely reflect where students went to college. I have never met a business owner or CEO who cared much about where a 20-something went to college or the grades he or she achieved. They look for applicants with good people skills who show an ability to be fully engaged. And that brings us back to those school open houses. What is most important isn’t a school’s reputation or status, per se, but how it can nurture your child and meet his or her specific needs and personality. Any school director will tell you that. Our city’s fine schools have different personalities, just like our children do. So as you visit schools in the coming months, relax and stay in the moment. Don’t succumb to irrational fears and myths about success and ‘the best schools.’ The best school is the one that will help children realize their potential and send them on their life journey, confident and happy. Tim Jordan, m.d., is a behavioral pediatrician who counsels kids in grade school through high school. for more information, go to weloki.com

correspondent for National Public Radio, the Associated Press and other media outlets is a former Muny Kid who spent many summers on the Forest Park stage. “I was Winthrop in The Music Man, the mayor of Munchkin City in The Wizard of Oz and Randolph MacAfee in Bye Bye Birdie,” Estrin recalls. After graduating college six years ago, his pursuit of new stories to tell led him to Jerusalem, where he has established himself as a print and radio reporter. Journalism was not one of Estrin’s early interests; rather, it was more of an ambient soundtrack. “I grew up in a house where every room had a radio, and every radio was tuned to NPR,” Estrin says. An internship with the Boston station during his last semester of college intrigued Estrin. Having studied Hebrew at Ladue High School and Hebrew and Arabic in college, Estrin decided to combine his interests and head to Israel. “I think if I realized how difficult it was going to be I wouldn’t have done it,” Estrin says. “I dived right in. I bought myself a microphone and recording equipment and started sending cold pitches to editors.” An editor from American Public Media’s program Marketplace liked a tape Estrin sent and agreed to give him a try. That allowed him to break into the industry. “It’s great how you go through life, you don’t really know where you’re going but all the pieces kind of fit,” Estrin says. Since then, the journalist has had remarkable experiences while searching for fresh features. Estrin interviewed Israeli and Palestinian muppets, reported on sexual harassment in Egypt, and rode on a motorcycle with Leon Trotsky’s great-grandson, a settler in Israel’s West Bank. He toured Germany’s most remote cultural archive and reported on an Israeli freelance spy ring that collects Jewish cultural artifacts in Libya. “When I decide what stories I want to pursue, I ask myself, ‘Is this surprising?’” Estrin says. “There’s a real hunger for stories that are under the surface, that are quirky, that tell what it’s like in this part of the world.” Although he’s left the stage behind, Estrin feels as though performing is a big part of his job. “I feel when I’m reporting on the air, it is, in a way, theater,” he says. “It’s telling something in a compelling way, getting a story across, making sure there’s drama.” Interviewing a reluctant subject, he says, often requires a bit of acting. “Sometimes you have to play the role of the journalist,” Estrin explains. “With insular communities you have to know how to speak in the right way and pick up on their suspicions right away. When someone here says ‘no,’ they really mean ‘make me.’ I never take ‘no’ for an answer. The first price they give you is not the final price; you have to haggle.” Estrin, whose investigative piece on Russia and Ukraine will be published soon in The Atlantic Monthly, gets back to St. Louis about once a year. “I love going to the Botanical Garden and Forest Park, and visiting my old colleagues at The Muny,” he says.

Family and friends representing 10 countries and 26 states were present when Sara Johnson-Cardona and Elijah Gerson wed July 14 at the Tower Grove Park Piper Palm House. Introduced during their sophomore year at the University of Michigan, Sara and Eli were friends for years before they started dating. Distance was one obstacle: Eli spent a semester in Australia, then Sara studied abroad in France. After graduation, Eli worked at an orphanage in Kenya while Sara moved to Boston. Things finally clicked when Eli, who moved to Vermont after returning from Africa, visited Boston one weekend and met up with Sara. The pair ended up in St. Louis when Sara, a Clayton High School alumna, got into graduate school at Washington University’s Brown School of Social Work and Eli took a Teach for America job at Confluence Preparatory Academy. Eli proposed Oct. 9, 2011 at Oceano in Clayton. Tower Grove Park made a lovely backdrop for the summer ceremony and outdoor photos. Bright bouquets with pink and orange roses and white calla lilies happily surprised Sara, who picked out colors but let the florist choose the actual blooms. “The flowers were really, really pretty,” she says. A reception followed at Windows on Washington, where guests enjoyed a formal dinner, cupcakes and dancing to a live band.

nostalgia United Hebrew congregation ] NOW

by judy goodman
Then
When I do research for Nostalgia, I often find myself in the Missouri History Museum’s stunning Library and Research Center at 225 S. Skinker Blvd., a structure with a distinguished history of its own. Designed in the ornate Byzantine style by the architecture firm of Maritz & Young and consultant Gabriel Ferrand, the building was constructed under the leadership of Rabbi Samuel Thurman as the fourth location for the United Hebrew Congregation. Dedicated in 1927 and considered the third-largest synagogue in the country, United Hebrew was the first Jewish congregation in St. Louis and the oldest west of the Mississippi. The congregation experienced major events during its 62 years in the building. President Harry S. Truman attended Rabbi Thurman’s 40th anniversary dinner at United Hebrew. In November 1960, Rabbi Jerome Grollman hosted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to speak to a standing-room-only crowd. As membership grew and moved westward, Rabbi Howard Kaplansky oversaw the congregation’s move to Chesterfield in 1989. This year, the congregation kicks off its
175th anniversary, one of only 13 existing U.S. synagogues to reach this milestone. Fortunately, the Missouri Historical Society was simultaneously searching for additional space when the congregation planned to move. The society hired Downey, Wofford & Richman to orchestrate a meticulous conversion of this 64-year-old landmark and its stately sanctuary into a public reading room. Three levels of closed stacks were added on either side of the reading room where classrooms used to be. During the renovation, architects were thrilled to discover and revitalize an original frieze hidden behind plaster walls. They also restored the ornamental dome, ensuring an acoustical environment suitable for study. The small education building to the south was replaced with a secure, 44,000-square-foot climate-controlled annex for object collections and conservation and photographic laboratories. Two of its four levels were placed underground to respect the old sanctuary. In December 1991 at the library’s opening, Rabbi Jerome Grollman astutely remarked that this regional gem has always been, and now shall always remain, a house of learning.

Having a large ‘toolbox’ enables a plastic surgery practice to offer a graduated menu of options to fit problems, preferences and budgets, according to Drs. Terry Myckatyn and Marissa Tenenbaum of West County Plastic Surgeons at Washington University. They find a single fix does not fit most patients. “Body contouring options run the gamut from non-invasive to significant surgery,” Myckatyn says. “Clients are surprised to have all those choices.” Myckatyn recommends CoolSculpting, or cryolipolysis, as a non-invasive option. The fat cells are frozen, and then die, becoming reabsorbed. CoolSculpting can be applied to most body parts for fat reduction: the upper or lower abdomen, flanks, upper arms, thighs, even the bra strap roll—and the surgeons say the procedure is comfortable. The target area is placed in the applicator to freeze the fat cells for about an hour. “Fat is more sensitive to cold than skin and connective tissues,” Myckatyn explains. “The reabsorption is a gradual process that causes a 15 to 25 percent reduction of fat in the treated area in three to four months. The process, developed at Harvard University, requires no down time.” Fat also can be suctioned from the body with varying levels of invasiveness. In-office procedures such as laser-assisted or ultrasound-assisted liposuction can remove small amounts of fat in target areas and have a mild tightening effect on the tissue. Removing larger volumes of fat requires an operating room and anesthesia. “The biggest determinant of what the patient really needs is how much excess skin involved,” Tenenbaum says. “To obtain a satisfactory result, any significant
skin must be removed, especially from the torso, upper arms or inner and outer thighs.” An added benefit of liposuction is using the harvested fat to replace lost volume elsewhere, particularly in the face, where small amounts can fill in hollows under the eyes and cheeks, or in the buttocks to enhance curves, Tenenbaum adds. “For fat to stay where drs. terry myckatyn, marissa tenebaum it is transferred, it has photo provided by w.u. physicians to have a blood supply. We use small amounts in the face, and larger amounts in the buttocks, threading it thinly through the buttock area to keep contact with vascular areas.”

Ask the Expert
Question: My OB/GYN recently informed me at my annual appointment that I no longer need a PAP smear every year. What if something is missed? Should I be concerned?
Answer:
For years, physicians have implemented the PAP smear to screen for early signs of cervical cancer. Routine PAP smears have dramatically decreased the incidence of cervical cancer in the U.S. over the past several decades. More than 50% of cervical cancers occur in women who have never been screened or have been screened only sporadically. However, the recommendation for a “yearly” PAP was based more on historical beliefs than true patient outcomes. As we have learned more about cervical cancer, we’ve also learned about the risks of over-screening (such as over-treating patients who may not have required therapy). Thus, recent screening guidelines have changed.

Nearly all cervical cancers arise after exposure to high-risk subtypes of the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is remarkably prevalent in women. Fortunately, most of these infections are transient. Accordingly, updated PAP smear recommendations are based on two points—(1) cervical cancer typically develops over years to decades, and (2) most women, even those with mild abnormalities on their PAP smear, will clear the HPV virus and have no long-standing effect from the infection/exposure. Thus, recent guidelines have encouraged an approach based more on patient riskfactors. A woman should have her first PAP smear at age 21; PAP smears should be repeated every three years (if normal) until age 30. After age 30, the recommended approach is to perform both the PAP smear and testing for HPV (both tests are collected from the same sample). If the PAP smear is normal and the HPV test is negative, the patient falls into an extremely low-risk category, for which current guidelines recommend testing once every five years. We strongly encourage patients to continue their annual visits—cervical cancer screening is only one part of the preventive care every patient needs. Patients under age 26 should also inquire about the HPV vaccine, which has been shown to dramatically decrease cervical cancer precursors in women exposed to high-risk HPV.

[ a renewed you by mary jo blackwood RN, MPH
No one wants to gaze into the mirror and see a complete stranger. We just want to see the best version of ourselves. Subtle improvements, made possible by noninvasive or minimally invasive treatments and procedures, can not only make us look better, but feel better.
[ torso tightening for that slinky dress ] As we get older, have children or gain a little weight, our midsection can lose definition. But there are ways to tighten and tone the area that don’t require endless crunches. Dr. Judith Gurley, Plastic Surgeon The tummy tuck was designed for a patient near her ideal weight with damaged skin or muscles. She may not have much fat, but she has hanging skin, stretch marks and a distorted navel. The traditional tummy tuck, with a scar below the bikini line and a small one in the navel, can treat the upper abdomen, navel and waist, allowing repair of stomach muscles to reestablish more core strength. It makes you look and feel better, and better supports the back. Torso tightening can also be done as a team approach. A general surgeon or a urogynecologist can fix other problems during the same surgical session, with one anesthesia and one downtime. The general surgeon can repair an abdominal hernia. The urologist can deal with pelvic floor issues and even put in a
urethral sling for stress incontinence. That gets the body back to a healthier, more functional state, while also improving how you look in a bikini. Dr. Michele Koo, Aesthetic Surgery Institute It’s almost impossible to spot reduce with dieting and exercise alone. Liposuction can create definition and curves and is safe if performed properly in an appropriate setting by a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon. Ultrasonic liposuction is continuing to evolve with smaller probes and different wavelengths of sound to broaden the scope of what we can accomplish. I like to combine procedures for an overall torso upgrade. A tummy tuck with a breast reduction or lift is a popular combination and can benefit the torso’s overall look just in time for the holidays. Men have issues, too. One of my most rewarding results is from doing ultrasonic liposuction on male enlarged breasts. This is an area of fat that may have plagued a man since adolescence. Getting rid of enlarged breasts increases his self-confidence and streamlines his body.
great idea ] Homemade Facial Mask When you’re pressed for time but need to soothe and rejuvenate your complexion, whip up this recipe—model Shalom Harlow swears by it. Blend two beaten egg whites with two tablespoons of plain yogurt. Apply to face and relax for a few minutes. Rinse it off with warm water and gently wipe face with a warm washcloth. Pat dry, then follow up with moisturizer. (From about.com beauty)

[ arm firming ] Bat wings are never a good look after Halloween. “New technology can reduce the size of the upper arms while tightening the skin,” says Dr. William Hart of Hart Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery Institute. “BodyTite is a device that removes fat and tightens skin significantly, while cauterizing blood vessels to decrease bruising.” In the three years he has performed the procedure, most patients have not required additional skin removal, he adds. “However, for a few patients, achieving a good result may require traditional liposuction with surgical removal of excess skin.” BodyTite uses radiofrequency energy and heat, delivered via a thin probe inserted beneath the skin. The heat liquefies the fat, and small holes at the tip of the probe suction it out. “Significant volumes of fat can be removed with this technique,” Hart says. The procedure can be done in the office under local anesthesia. Afterward, the client wears a compressive garment. BodyTite can also be used for fat reduction and tightening in other areas, including the neck, abdomen, and inner and outer thighs.

[ targeted facial lifts ] In some people, the face seems to age as a unit. In others, specific areas, like the jawline, upper eyelids or brows, seem to age first. Targeted lifts can be the solution for keeping that youthful look longer. Dr. L. Michael Nayak, Nayak Plastic Surgery Some people have focal facial aging and others have more generalized aging changes, but are only concerned about fixing one area. Targeted lifts, sometimes called mini-lifts, can be tailored to individual needs. Clients should interview different surgeons and see before and after pictures of similar procedures, to see if the surgeon’s style matches their desired results. I do most surgical procedures in my office operating room, usually with local anesthesia and IV sedation. The best determinant for using a local or adding sedation is the length of the surgery and patient comfort. Upper eyelids do well under a local because they only take about 45 minutes and the head stays in
a neutral position. Other procedures are better with sedation because they take longer and require the patient to be in awkward positions. Dr. David Caplin, Parkcrest Plastic Surgery An isolated neck-lift won’t do anything for the jowls. For someone who just wants to sharpen the angle between the neck and jaw line, tighten the skin and remove a little fat, that may be all they need. A lower face-lift, in which I tighten the neck and improve jowling, tightens tissues and involves less downtime and expense than a full face-lift. For people trying to avoid more surgery, a combination of approaches can be helpful, such as a neck-lift with SmartLipo on the jowl to tighten the skin and remove fat. Ancillary techniques like SmartLipo, fat grafting, and laser resurfacing around the eyes are valuable for fine-tuning.
HEALTH&BEAUTY
[ options for fat removal ] [ non-invasive facial rejuvenation ] You don’t have to go under the knife to get a more youthful face. There’s a whole range of noninvasive treatments that can work wonders. Dr. Joseph Muccini, MidAmerica Skin Health & Vitality Center Start with lotions and potions—a daily skin regimen should minimally include a cleanser, vitamin C serum, a retinol, a moisturizer and a good sunscreen. Then we can look to chemical peels, microdermabrasion or dermal planing. For color issues like sun spots, rosacea or melasma, the best approach is non-ablative lasers and lights, like IPL. For three-dimensional structural issues, such as sagging and wrinkling, another set of ablative lasers, like the Pearl and Pearl Fractional, target deeper tissues and tighten collagen. Still relatively noninvasive, Botox and its competitors target the muscles under the skin, controlling how they move. Superficial fillers can make the skin look healthier, and the deeper ones can plump up tissues. A youthful face is not pulled tight; it has soft, supple curves that can be recreated by replacing lost volume.
Erin Murphy, aesthetician, Aurora Medical Spa Peels that actually make you peel give the best results. Our Vitalize peels go three layers deep to treat fine lines, skin tone and texture. For pigment irregularities, another peel has hydroquinone, a skin-lightening agent. Our non-ablative, skin-tightening laser uses heat to stimulate collagen in the tissue with no downtime. It helps tighten the jowl area and firm fine lines. I recommend a series of five treatments. Results are noticeable with the first one, and each successive treatment builds on that. Photofacials target pigment spots and require a series of treatments because each one brings up more pigment from sun damage below the surface. Initially spots look darker, then they flake off or fade. Afterward, be sure to protect your investment with good skin care and high SPF sunblock.
“Options for removing fat and tightening skin range from noninvasive to surgical,” says Dr. Richard Moore of The Lifestyle Center. “Results can vary from person to person.” Noninvasive options inclued: »» Zerona is a total body, low-level laser that opens up channels in fat-cell walls, causing the contents to leak out and be absorbed by the body. But it doesn’t eliminate the fat cells—they can refill if you overeat or become inactive. »» Zeltiq sucks the skin up and freezes fat cells, which are then reabsorbed by the body over three months or so. Not appropriate for large areas. »» LipoSonix, recently FDA-approved, uses focused ultrasound to disrupt fat-cell membranes and destroy the cells. »» Devices that use radiofrequency waves, such as Venus Freeze, can both tighten skin and shrink fat cells. Surgical devices that physically remove fat cells: »» Tickle Lipo can extract large volumes of fat through punch biopsy incisions without heat »» Vaser uses ultrasound energy to break up fat and suck it out, while also tightening skin. »» SmartLipo uses a laser to aspirate fat and create some skin tightening. »» Traditional liposuction uses a cannula that vibrates and sucks out fat, but with no skin tightening.

Nothing beats sleep, good nutrition and the right allergy medication, but when you’re trying to look less stressed, younger or just more beautiful, eye cream can go a long way. Just remember: keep the jars or tubes clean and always dab-and-pat, never rub the delicate skin around your eyes!

Environmental Repair Plus Calm Glow Eye Gel Coola
White Lucent Anti-Dark Circles Eye Cream Shiseido
Wholly organic skincare products like this are hard to find, especially those with rave reviews. Rose water is paired with rye seed, linseed and black currant extract. The rye improves elasticity, an essential element to protect our skin, while the black currant and linseed soothe and reduce redness and discoloration.
When your skin has permanently darkened from age or damage, you can cover it or repair it. This cream uses vitamin C and 4MSK to help prevent melanin formation while brightening skin. Hawthorn extract, rice germ extract and vitamin E lend deep moisture and improve microcirculation in the tiny capillaries that weave throughout the super-thin, delicate skin in the eye area.

They also promote better moisture absorbtion and rentention, important for plumping up fine lines and thickening the skin of the under-eye area.
Found in the beauty section of your local market, picking up this inexpensive tube is quick and easy. Once you’re home, you’ll forget the low price—it does a top-shelf job using magnesium, copper and zinc to promote cell production and fight years of damage from sun and poor diet. [ the routine ] Skin
Every morning, I wash my face using a little loofah sponge to help exfoliate. I use RX for Brown Skin, which is designed for women with different ranges of complexion. I use organic African black soap whenever I feel myself getting weird blemishes; it feels like it helps get my skin back in balance. Every so often, I’ll go for a facial to help clear out my skin, and I try to be careful about ones with chemicals.
Makeup
I use Mary Kay foundation and concealer, and a mix of products from Sephora. I use blush or bronzer, depending on the season. A television makeup trick I use is putting bronzer or blush around my hairline so you can’t see where the foundation ends. I’ve learned from being on-camera what makeup helps brighten eyes; my eyeliner is from Chanel. I do my lips with gloss or lipstick last and try to keep it pretty natural. I use MAC blot pressed powder to control shine.

The one-woman force behind Sarah Thompson Productions is always juggling many projects —plus motherhood. “There’s something really exciting about the work I do,” Thompson says. “There’s never a dull moment.” The Chesterfield native attended MICDS. After completing her undergraduate studies at Stanford, Thompson got a master’s degree from the history, film and television program at the University of Birmingham in England. She worked for the BBC and produced a documentary before moving back to St. Louis in 2004 and working for a marketing agency. Almost four years ago, Thompson started working independently through her eponymous public relations and marketing company. She also produces freelance
television packages for organizations such as the Higher Education Channel and the Missouri History Museum, and she has won several regional Emmy Awards for her work. Thompson serves on the board of commissioners for the Central West End South Special Business District. With all the projects Thompson balances, she says, “No day is ever the same.” On a typical Thursday, Thompson drops off her young son at daycare, then heads downtown to KMOV to film a segment of Stepping Out for Great Day St. Louis. Then she takes her son to her mother’s house and attends a few afternoon meetings. The sunset does not signal the end of Thompson’s workday; she says she gets most of her writing done late at night. “Living in the West End makes my life so much easier,” she says. “I don’t really have a commute. What we give up in size makes up for itself in convenience.”

Beauty Shortcuts The holiday season is upon us. Between long days working, shopping and prepping—and longer nights hosting, attending and celebrating—there’s not always time to put on a new face or restyle hair. T&S has an arsenal of tested tricks and tips to keep you looking fresh and well-rested the next two months—even if you’re not!
1
Don’t have time to snag one of our recommended eye creams (pg. 38)? Here’s a few quick tricks to calm those tired eyes. Put spoons, tea bags or even cucumber slices in the freezer for a few minutes. Then place the chilled items over your closed eyes to reduce puffiness. Just as effective (if a bit odd), a dab of Preparation H cream also can soothe tired, overworked eyes. Get creative with ChapStick. If that flyaway hair just won’t stay in place, use lip balm to stick it down. No lipstick? No problem: smudge lip balm and bit of blush together on the back of your hand, then dab for a touch of color. We all know acne isn’t just a teenage problem. Over-the-counter eye drops can calm redness from a pimple. And if you ‘accidentally’ picked at that pesky blemish, snip open a vitamin E capsule and place the contents directly on the cleaned area to promote healing. Keep your lips kissable and soft by gently exfoliating them with a toothbrush and lotion or a gentle scrub of sugar and honey. Wipe off and add a light coat of lip balm to seal in moisture.

Blasting heaters can make hair look like you had a run in with The Magic House static ball. Keep a few dryer sheets in your desk drawer and rub your hair thoroughly to cut down the static buildup. Then keep your hands off!

Ban dry, scaly lizard legs at holiday cocktail parties. Add a pump of lotion or hair conditioner to your shaving cream, then use lotion after your shower. The extra hydration does wonders for your poor shins. Washing your hair every day in winter strips vital oils even faster—but bangs tend to look greasy if unwashed. Pull the rest of your hair back and shampoo just your bangs right at the sink. A quick blow-dry, and no one is any the wiser. Give your face a chance to breathe after all the extra makeup and chilly temperatures. Detox with a homemade mask once a week; there are hundreds of recipes online using everything from avocados to oatmeal. Check your pantry, then Google whatever you have on hand!

Halibut with Flash-Fried Spinach, Raspberry Pork, Salted Caramel Cake, Pumpkin Cheesecake
This fine-dining restaurant is tucked into an unlikely spot, right in the middle of a residential neighborhood in historic Old Florissant. It’s located in a National Register of Historic Places building dating to 1863 that was once the corner grocery store. The building was purchased and renovated in 1994 by the Bennett family, and it is now a destination restaurant serving up good meals at value prices. There’s nothing nouveau, fusion or deconstructed about this place. It’s about down home cooking in a country-inn ambience. And one of the most appealing aspects is the friendly service. Everything about our two meals there said ‘welcome.’ The main dining room has a turn-of-the-century appeal, with a fireplace and mantel, wrought-iron pedestal tables and tall, Colonial-style mullioned windows. I actually prefer the less-bustling adjacent wood porch, with its thin-plank ceiling and roll-down plastic walls for when it’s cold outdoors. A third dining
room added a few years ago doubles as the bar, and it can get noisy. In addition to its sheer charm value, Hendel’s offers the complete-dinner concept of bygone years that so many restaurants have abandoned. All selections, about 14, come with salad, vegetable and side. Our Raspberry Pork ($19) consisted of three sizable slices of loin meat sauced with a sweet, reddish drizzle. The meat was tender and came with smashed red potatoes and crisp, grilled asparagus. The sauce tasted suspiciously like raspberry jam; I expect it was a shortcut from the Escoffier version made with fresh raspberries. An evening special, Grouper with Flash Fried Spinach ($21), was very good. The fillet was char-broiled and blanketed with pleasant oily spinach and thick shavings of parmesan. It came with grilled asparagus and herbed orzo. The salads that preceded our meal had iceberg and other greens and few cherry
tomatoes; however, the greens were a little tired, possibly from being pre-made. But the house dressing, a poppyseed vinaigrette, was a tasty emulsion of seeds, sugar and crushed sweet red onion. There are three steaks on the menu, and my Strip with House-made Steak Sauce ($22) had plenty of flavor and came well-seasoned with salt and pepper—sounds simple, but that’s not always the case. The sauce was piquant and deep, tinged with Worchestershire. A special of Shrimp Scampi was less exciting, especially the accompanying polenta, which was more like soupy farina. Hendel’s offers good, down-to-earth desserts via a dessert tray. We chose Salted Caramel Cake ($5.50) and Pumpkin Cheesecake. The first had a pleasant yellow cake with a gooey caramel topping and caramel crunch bits running through the layers. The cheesecake was a cream-cheesy wedge with a nice, strong pumpkin flavor.

[ changes at cheshire ]
Renovations to the 27,000-square-foot structure just east of The Cheshire at 6300 Clayton Road are almost complete. The private event space upstairs and upscale casual spot downstairs is called The Restaurant. Opened Nov. 5, it’s a dining room and bar for 200 that offers American cuisine prepared in an open kitchen. Basso, an Italian bar and restaurant to be situated underneath The Restaurant, is scheduled to launch Dec. 15, and The Market, a causal grab-and-go spot where people can buy house-made pastas, breads and light bites, is set to start serving in January.

Phillips previously worked as the executive chef at Provisions Gourmet Market in Creve Coeur.

Bridge with Bl♠nd
by kenny bland
Defense! Defense! It sounds like a cheer from a Rams game, but that chant can be heard at the bridge center, too. As players, we defend most of the time, so it becomes a critical facet of the game. Recently, a carding agreement and good analysis during the hand defeated a fine three, no-trump contract, much to the disappointment of the declarer and his partner. Cover the West and South hands and see if you can find the killing defense. The bidding: S W N E 1nt pass 3nt pass pass pass The hand:
North ♠ 76 ♥54 ♦ A Q 10 9 7 5 ♣ A 10 9
WEST EAST ♠ A 9 4 3 ♠ Q J 10 5 J 10 9 6 ♥ ♥A872 6 ♦ ♦ 43 J 5 3 2 ♣ ♣ 8 7 6 SOUTH ♠K82 ♥KQ3 ♦ K J 8 2 ♣KQ4 Opening lead Jack of ♥ East and West had the ‘Jack denies’ agreement: When East won the Ace of ♥, he knew the declarer had the King and Queen of that suit. He quickly shifted to the Queen of ♠, and the defense took the Ace of ♥ and 4 ♠, down one. Please note: a ♥ continuation would result in declarer making 5!
tip of the day]
Q| My partner and I are new to duplicate, and some of the vocabulary is foreign to us. For example, we were asked what our defensive carding agreement is. What is carding? A| Carding is ‘bridge speak’ for signaling. When someone asks about carding, they want to know your partnership signaling agreement, standard or otherwise. A popular signaling agreement is when you or your partner are on lead against no-trump, a lead of a Jack denies a higher honor. When making an opening lead against no-trump, a standard lead would be the Jack of a suit from J 10 9 8 7. Also the lead of the Jack from A J 10 9 8, K J 10 9 8 is a possibility. This creates an ambiguity. By having the carding agreement that the lead of the ‘Jack denies,’ we are able to fix this problem.

WHAT I DO I’m a reporter for KSDK, and my focus is on good news. WHY I DO IT It’s a great way to meet inspiring people who do incredible things. WHY I’M GOOD AT IT I’m definitely a people person, and I’m very competitive. ORIGINS I grew up in New Madrid, Mo. FAMILY I have the best parents in the world. My sister is my best friend, and my 4-year-old niece and 6-year-old nephew are so much fun to be around. They make everything else seem unimportant. EDUCATION I went to William Woods University on a basketball and softball scholarship, and studied TV and radio production. I interned at KSDK...and never left! NOT
QUITE READY FOR MY CLOSEUP I originally wanted to be an actress, but wasn’t willing to take the risk. CAREER PATH After interning at Show Me St.
Louis in 1996, I was a production assistant for Today in St. Louis, which means I ran the teleprompter for Art and Jennifer. Then I went back to Show Me as an associate producer. I begged and pleaded until they gave me a chance to report. I eventually ended up hosting Show Me then moved to Today for five years. Now I show up on the 4, 5 or 6 p.m. newscasts. BIGGEST CHALLENGE Moving to the ‘big city’ after growing up in a town of 3,000. FAVORITE MOVIE I absolutely loved The Help and would have given the Oscar to Viola. I also can’t turn the channel if A League of Their Own is on. FAVORITE BOOK The Help and The Glass Castle. Just bought Andy Cohen’s book and can’t wait to read it. I’m more of a memoir person. FICTIONAL CHARACTER I MOST RESEMBLE I can relate to Monica on “Friends” in the way that she is, shall we say, very particular about things. MY HERO This is going to sound cheesy, but I really admire my sister. She has her own psychology practice, then she comes home and cooks, plays with the kids and gives baths. I can barely take care of myself. TALENT I WISH I HAD I took piano lessons for seven years and can’t even play a scale. My mom told me I’d regret not practicing, and I do. IF I RULED THE WORLD No kid would go to bed hungry or unloved. BEST ADVICE I EVER GOT It’s not the mistake, it’s how you recover from it. That’s something my TV mom, Jennifer Blome, told me years ago. BEST ADVICE I EVER GAVE Stop talking and listen. SATURDAY NIGHT IN ST. LOUIS Dinner with friends, followed by live music VACATION ESCAPE Mexico FAVORITE RESTAURANT Eleven Eleven Mississippi is like my second home. HELPING HAND I am very blessed and feel like I should do my best to pay it forward. GOAL I want to tell the best story I possibly can, every single day.

Cross, an action movie based on the detective novels of the same name. Unlike many of Perry’s productions, the film does not depict goofy family pratfalls. Cross is a police detective hunting a sociopathic assassin through the underbelly of Detroit. The action sequences were more laughable than thrilling, but they were preferable to the tear-jerking emotional moments and the unpleasant, graphic torture scenes. I didn’t appreciate that all of the strong female characters were killed off over the course of the movie—is it too much to ask that a woman stand among the heroes at the end? Should You See It? Unless you’re a big Perry fan, save this for Redbox. —R.K.

always-amazing Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a charismatic and highly intellectual leader of a spiritual movement known simply as The Cause. He and his wife (a scarily controlling and controlled Amy Adams) guide enthusiastic followers through countless psychological exercises to reconnect with past lives. ‘Master’ takes special interest in Freddie (Joaquin Phoenix), an emotionally disturbed, brutish WWII vet who drunkenly stumbles into this cult-like group. Though the acting was superb, the plot dragged. Many scenes seemed to have nothing to do with the overall story and left me wondering: What exactly was Master’s point? Should You See It? Wait for the DVD on this one. —c.k.

It’s also a favorite feature of her two young sons, who love to splash around. “This is where they learned to swim, and now they’re fabulous swimmers,” Lorenzini says. The pool is one of many special assets in the one-and-ahalf-story home. The lower level has a theater room, exercise area and even a four-hole putting photos by steven b. smith photography green. The great room, which has a gas fireplace and a wet bar, is especially well-lit because of its high, coffered ceilings. “The great room is really lovely with all the windows and how light reflects off the prisms in the chandeliers; my sons call them rainbows.” The term also applies to the bright colors Lorenzini picked to paint the firstfloor walls. The kitchen and breakfast room are apple green, while the dining room has cranberry walls. Periwinkle purple shower tile adds flair to the master bathroom, which has a Jacuzzi tub and two large vanities. “I think the colors help increase the warmth,” Lorenzini says. The family has enjoyed living in Town & Country, and Lorenzini says her neighbors are friendly. “It’s a good walking neighborhood, and it’s lovely with the trees changing,” she says. Lorenzini’s family is relocating to be closer to her husband’s job and the boys’ school, and she has one requirement for their new home. “We’ll definitely have to find another house with a pool!” she says.
homework] Dear Homework, My husband and I own a 1960s California ranch in Creve Coeur. We have updated the inside to have an eclectic/modern look and feel. We have not updated the exterior besides normal painting. We are in dire need of an update, and love the Dwell look. Do you have any ideas that would not be a complete renovation? ———Make Me Modern
Dear Make Me Modern,
After
To make your house look more like a home in Dwell magazine, you will need to make it feel more modern, minimal and focused than it already does. The first thing I would do is paint the brick a concrete gray color and the siding a dark brown to match the window frames. This simplifies the elevation by eliminating the variations in the brick mix and sending the siding into the background. Next, I would add a garden wall and covered walkway to reinforce the horizontal lines of the composition and add a layer of modern detailing. This also underscores a sense of privacy for the large living room windows by creating an entry courtyard. Finally, by treating the landscaping in a bolder, more consistent way, the somewhat fuzzy current feeling is replaced by a crisp, minimal look that brings the whole scheme together, as does a new glass front door, a bright orange planter and modern aluminum house numbers. All of these ideas could be done separately or in some combination, based on your budget, to reach your goal. Good luck, ———Homework HomeWork is penned by Paul Doerner, president, The Lawrence Group. if you would like your home critiqued, contact us at homework@townandstyle.com

[ berkley land ] prudential alliance realtors
“
While earning a degree in finance at San Diego State University and Mizzou, Berkley Land took a real estate course and got hooked. “It seemed like an exciting career choice—and it has been!” says Land, who worked as an insurance agent before getting her real estate license in 1995. She has been with Prudential Alliance since 2004. The single mom of three lives in Glendale. When I was new to the industry, I worked with Anne Knight at Janet McAfee. Her knowledge and expertise helped me enormously. It was so much fun, working the deal—I fell in love with the business immediately. I have a very easygoing disposition and exude patience and understanding. I’m also a great listener. There’s no better career for me than real estate. I love helping sellers get their homes ready to bring on the market. My associate Kendra Downs and I love making suggestions for decorating and staging that can help clients sell their homes quicker and for top dollar. My least favorite part of the job is when I have to tell clients their houses are worth less than they paid for them. At this stage in my career, nothing really surprises me. This business is full of curveballs. You learn from every challenge. All clients have expectations and intentions. As agents, it’s our responsibility to ask questions, listen, understand their expectations and work accordingly and effectively. If that happens, there’s no such thing as a difficult client. I enjoy all kinds of exercise, be it hiking, running or cycling. I particularly love Bikram-style yoga. I’m currently training for the MS 150 cycling event in Columbia, Mo. It’s for a great cause, and it’s tons of fun. It’s so important to keep learning and to give back to your community. I got my GRI (Graduate, Realtor Institute) designation, and I’m constantly sharpening my social media skills. I’m also helping Paraquad with their Accessible St. Louis campaign and fundraiser. I love to cook and entertain. When I’m cooking, I get into a mode that really relaxes me. I’d love to train to be a great chef. I’ve always wanted my own restaurant or gourmet food shop. Being a successful agent is a full-time commitment. Having great rapport with colleagues and clients is key. Connecting with people is the heart of our business.
