[ letter from the editor ] I have an extra reason to be thankful this year: the early Thanksgiving ‘dinner’ I enjoyed one lunch hour at the Four Seasons restaurant, Cielo. That tony establishment downtown hosted a media meal to show off its new Thanksgiving Dinner To Go—a very smart move, considering how much journalists love food. All I can say is, any meal that starts with rum martinis is bound to get rave reviews. I declined the cocktails, so you can trust me on this one: That turkey was the best I’ve ever tasted, probably thanks to the 48-hour brining with salt, sugar and ‘aromatics,’ whatever that is. Or maybe it was the happy (freerange) bird. The setting wasn’t bad, either. We ate at the chef’s table, in the kitchen amid the hanging pots and gleaming chrome counters, while chefs Don, Fabrizio, Mark and Peter carved, mashed, browned and garnished a meal I shall long hold up as the paragon of Thanksgiving feasts. There were Roasted Brussels Sprouts (dotted with pancetta and finished in duck fat) and two kinds of whipped potatoes, each liberally dosed with cream and butter. Light years removed from the green bean casseroles of my youth, the Four Seasons version included cannelini beans and bechamel sauce. No Thanksgiving meal is complete without the requisite sugar coma, so two pies were served: Pumpkin and Maple Brown Sugar Apple. As a guest, I felt compelled to eat both, and after all, pumpkin is practically a vegetable, right? The only downside to all this pre-Thanksgiving pampering is, well, what it does to the actual holiday meal I’ll be having at home. It is doomed to pale by comparison. —Dorothy F. talk [towns] by bill beggs jr.

In the 1950s, Frank Lloyd Wright contacted President Harry Truman in hopes that the high-tension lines spoiling his Arizona vista would be strung elsewhere. More recently, U. City activists fought for MetroLink to build underground. Every community has had a residentialversus-commercial issue that boils down to NIMBY: Not in My Back Yard. Kirkwood residents near the Mobil Onthe-Run under construction hate it. In 2011 in Clayton, folks near a proposed new school argued it would be better for everyone if it were just built elsewhere. Of course, some in that ‘elsewhere’ neighborhood would’ve been upset. And so it goes. Nearby residents may refuse to patronize the new Ballwin ‘boutique’ Schnucks at Clarkson and Kehrs Mill roads, which opened Nov. 1—but it’s likely others will still buy groceries from a store whose neighbors whine. Some dog lovers won’t think it’s too much of a stretch that a hound’s been hailed as a hero in the Nov. 4 apartment complex fire that left some residents homeless. A woman, her husband and sister were asleep in an upstairs unit when smoke alarms started sounding about 6:30 a.m. throughout Chesterfield Place Apartments. But they didn’t stir until Toby, a little Shih Tzu-looking canine, started yelping. Firefighters rescued Toby and his owners by ladder, as well as others. Several people were treated for smoke inhalation, and a responder twisted his ankle, but if it weren’t for alarms, the result could have been tragic, Monarch Fire District officials say. As fate would have it, the fire broke out the morning after the nationwide campaign to encourage us to check our smoke alarm batteries when we change our clocks.

of the

Knuckleheads, beware: People of your ilk always flunk Crime Doesn’t Pay 101 and its lab section, Banks Have Surveillance Cameras. First, things usually turn out badly for bank robbers. Second, credit unions are kind of like banks. A few weeks ago, the president of a Troy, Mo., bank, who has a concealedcarry permit for the weapon he had, helped subdue a robber attempting to get away with five grand. On the eve of Halloween, a woman was arrested after trying to deposit someone else’s check from the IRS (more than seven grand) at a Creve Coeur credit union. She could get 10 years and a $250,000 fine. To her credit, at least she was a customer, apparently. First, someone wants a book about same-sex marriage removed from the library shelf in Brentwood. Now, a staffer at the Kirkwood Public Library has chosen to creatively interpret the tawdry bestselling trilogy that starts with 50 Shades of Grey. It’s not like Tom Viviano is giving readings of the notorious series. It was just his Halloween costume. Dressed in black, Viviano sported a gray mask, then affixed photocopied cover images, plus dozens of hardware-store paint-sample strips, light to dark gray. Metallic gray he accomplished with the medium-duty chain hanging around his neck. Any attempted interpretation of his disguise might lend credence to the trilogy’s derivative, turgid and clichéridden prose that masquerade as plot. Boys will be boys? It appears that the sordid ‘senior list’ at Ladue Horton Watkins High School will become the subject of a federal investigation. The list, which has annually been circulated by male students and ranks senior women according to characteristics including

hygiene and alleged sexual activities, was brought to the attention of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights by a mom whose daughter was included. The parent has said she doesn’t want the list perpetrators to be punished, but for authorities no longer to condone the practice. Ladue School District, of course, has released a statement to the effect that it would cooperate fully in any investigation. This has been going on for a decade! Did it really have to go this far? Cranksgiving sounds like a spin-off of the ‘trick’ in trick-or-treating, but it’s more like the ‘treat’: Bicyclists took a six-mile spin (or up to 20-plus) to buy food at grocery stores in Maplewood and environs and carry it back for donation to Food Outreach. Alas, no Kit-Kats, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey’s Kisses with Almonds… (Sorry; went into a treat trance there.) Nutritious, nonperishable donations were geared to the specific dietary needs of adults and youngsters with HIV/AIDS and cancer. This was the seventh year for the St. Louis charity event, held the Sunday we ‘fall back’ to allow riders an extra hour of power sleep. Rather than charge a registration fee, St. Louis BWorks asks riders to divert those funds for food. The U. City Symphony Orchestra, featuring John Powel Walsh on the organ for its, Nov. 18 concert, is headed out of town: to Richmond Heights. Under the baton of maestro Leon Burke, Walsh will play Rheinberger Organ Concerto No. 1 in F major, Op. 137. Walsh and the orchestra also will perform Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78, also a work for organ. The concert begins at 3 p.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, 1264

Arch Terrace, Richmond Heights. It is free, as are all the orchestra’s concerts. For at least the past two presidential elections, a couple on South Elm Avenue in Webster Groves has displayed competing political yard signs: This year, the ‘His’ placard was attached to a Romney/Ryan sign. On the opposite side of the front sidewalk was the Obama/Biden sign, with a ‘Hers’ placard affixed—in the feminine Curlz MT font, no less. This issue went to press right before acceptance and concession speeches were delivered; balloons had long gasped their last, the few remaining shreds of confetti swept away. Either way, certain unassailable truths remain: There won’t be as many reasons to turn off the TV in disgust. Ranters who hollered either “fascist” or “socialist” will eventually lighten up; fewer folks will be summarily unfriended on Facebook. Chances are our grand American experiment in democracy, already 236 years old, will make it to 240. Squirrels in our national parks are tame because people ignore warnings not to feed them. It screws up their diet; the rodents will rely on handouts rather than forage for nuts and berries. But they can’t find popcorn, Little Debbies, bananas, jalapeno-flavored potato chips or chewing gum in the wild. Common sense, right? Officials in Wildwood have taken that tack in nixing an ordinance that would have made people who feed deer and geese subject to a fine. Such laws are on the books in Chesterfield, Ballwin and Town & Country, but to date nobody’s had to cough up a penalty in any of those jurisdictions. Besides, the deer are staying plenty healthy sans handouts. There’s enough munchable foliage among the citizenry’s bushes, ornamental trees and hostas.

[ TT Trivia ] What company developed the public-relations campaign aimed at persuading people to change smoke-alarm batteries each time the nation ‘springs forward’ or ‘falls back’? A major fundraiser, the annual Crystal Ball, takes place Jan. 19 at The Ritz-Carlton, The gala, themed A Bridge Home, is chaired by Kathy Wehfritz. “Look, no one ends up at Ranken Jordan because something good happened to them,” Tanner says. “But there’s no healing without hope. So we always ask our patients what their goals are. Amanda told us she wanted to go back to school; Josh told us he wanted to walk again. We didn’t say no. We got them out of their sickbeds, ready to face the world again. Other hospitals save lives, but at Ranken Jordan, we teach kids how to live again.”

daughter, Amanda, was released from the hospital. Doctors had saved the child’s life after a car wreck nearly ended it, but she was paralyzed from the neck down. After weeks in a coma, her condition had stabilized, but she couldn’t move and was suffering from severe head injuries. “As I waited at the hospital entrance, I saw other discharged kids happily leaping out of their wheelchairs,” Connie recalls. “Amanda wasn’t one of them. The doctors had done all they could, but her body and spirit were still broken. The crisis was over, but our journey was just beginning.” Today, Amanda is back in school with her friends, using her chin to guide a power wheelchair. And 17-year-old Josh Ritter, told he’d never walk again after surgery for a brain tumor left him wheelchair-bound, is up and around with a walker and leg braces. These ‘hopeless cases,’ and thousands of other severely ill or injured kids, got back on their feet again with help from Ranken Jordan. “We pick up where other hospitals hand you the discharge papers,” says CEO Lauri Tanner. “We bridge the gap between acute care and home. Families come to us after they’re told, There’s nothing more we can do for your child at our level of care. You need Ranken Jordan.” The pediatric specialty hospital provides inpatient and outpatient programs, a comprehensive orthopedic and rehabilitation clinic, and ongoing support for patients ages 2 weeks to 21 years. “We serve the sickest of the sick, kids born with complex medical conditions or suffering from BEFORE catastrophic injuries,” Tanner says. “We take care of Mom and Dad, too.” Overwhelmed and AFTER exhausted after spending days or weeks sleeping in a hospital chair, praying for their child’s life, Professionally power washing a driveway, walkway or patio provides immediate results and beautification. A stained, cracked driveway can make a home look terrible. That’s why it’s imperative to clean and seal your driveway and sidewalks well before the cold weather hits, Mike advises. Perfect Power Wash’s protective sealant stops moisture from penetrating the surface of concrete to prevent cracking and spalling. The driveway restoration process begins by using a professional grade concrete surface cleaner that cleans effectively with high pressure water. “The cleaning will remove surface grime and prepare the driveway for the sealer application,” Mike says. “Because concrete is porous, the longer oil and other fluids have to seep into the surface the harder they are to remove. Since stains can be absorbed as deep as an inch into the concrete, at some point they will become permanent. That’s why you want to call us as soon as possible.” After the high-pressure cleaning, Perfect Power Wash will give the driveway time to dry, then will apply a penetrating sealant

forms an invisible barrier that inhibits water and other damaging agents from freezing and thawing below the surface of your concrete which is the biggest cause of cracking and spalling. It also helps to prevent staining of your newly cleaned driveway or patio,” Mike explains. Unlike roller-applied products, Perfect Power Wash’s spray-on sealer leaves a uniform, invisible finish without discoloration. Mike says the entire process is environmentally friendly.

Spirituality is a spectrum. Defined as a concern for the sacred or a search for meaning, it ranges from devout religious practice to mindfulness about personal choices. Whether through prayer, song, meditation or study, reflecting on life’s larger purposes can be deeply rewarding. There’s scientific evidence that exploring your spiritual side is good for more than the soul. A growing body of research, published in journals ranging from American Psychology to the American Journal of Public Health, suggests that spirituality yields health benefits. A University of Missouri study published in May in the Journal of Religion and Health found increased spirituality is significantly related to better mental health and positively correlated to positive personality traits. “I do believe that attending to one’s spirituality, understanding of spirit and personal wholeness is an important part of being a healthy person,” says the Rev. Leslie Limbaugh. The minister of students and communication at Third Baptist Church in Midtown thinks of spirituality as the connection between an individual’s mind and soul, she explains, and the recognition that “there is more than my brain cells clicking along and more than my physical body at work.” Limbaugh says spiritual care is as important a factor to good health as nutrition, sleep and exercise. According to Limbaugh’s interpretation of Christian theology, an individual’s relationship with God makes him or her a new creation. “It sustains us through each day,” she says. “It doesn’t take away all the problems of the world around us, but it totally changes our perspective on how to get by. It gives us a whole new set of tools.” To cultivate such a relationship, the minister recommends spending time in silence, enjoying nature, reading devotional literature and discussing spiritual concerns in a small group. One group of students explores a different spiritual tradition, Bhakti Yoga, each week at Washington University. Practitioners of the variant of Hinduism seek to connect with God and instill care for all things. Yamuna Jivana Das, who received his MBA at the university, began offering the class five years ago when his own spiritual teacher suggested he reach out to others. Class includes a stress-relieving yoga lesson, a home-cooked vegetarian meal, mantra meditation and discussion based on the BhagavadGita, a sacred Hindu text. Students practice applying tenets of the faith to their daily lives by acting out scenes of interpersonal conflict. There are two forms of meditation using mantras, Jivana Das explains. The first, self-chanting, can be done during any situation. “The personal chanting is best done in early morning when we don’t have stuff to do, when the mind is more peaceful,” he says. “It is best to do in a clean, sacred environment.” The second, which he teaches at Washington University, is group call-and-response chanting focusing on the sound of the mantra. Among the topics students discuss is how to free themselves from fear. “We have nothing to lose. Everything is temporary,” Jivana Das says. “It came of its own accord, and it will go of its own accord. It’s foolish to be fearful.” He observes that lessons like these help students who regularly attend the class feel happier. “The No. 1 thing I see in them is a strong sense of purpose in life,” he says. photo by bill barrett

About the club| Susan Boxerman was visiting the Ozarks 20 years ago when a woman from home recognized her and asked what prompted her weekend trip. Boxerman explained she and members of her new book club were traveling together. “Oh, I guess you read trashy novels,” the woman said, laughing. Boxerman, who was actually in the middle of a Jane Austen novel, was dismayed. “I told the girls, from now on, we are the literary group, not the book group!” she says. Since then, the Literary Group has enjoyed monthly discussions and potluck dinners. “We know who makes the best salad and who makes the best dessert and who’s going to be late so we assign them something we don’t need right away,” Boxerman says. The group selects books using categories such as women’s issues, history, religion, biography and mystery. Members, who take an annual trip, range in age from 50 to 80-plus years old, which Boxerman says makes for interesting discussions. About the book| Appointed ambassador to Germany in 1933, American professor William E. Dodd took his family to Berlin just as Hitler was coming to power. Erik Larson provides the Dodds’ up-close perspective of the rise of Nazism in his non-fiction book, In the Garden of Beasts.

[ opinions ]

>> The Garden of Beasts illustrates how Hitler systematically handled what he termed the ‘Jewish

Problem.’ Dodd tried to warn the administration about this. This was a wonderful book. - Susan Boxerman >> The book does an excellent job of weaving true historical events into a very readable and thought-provoking novel. The facts are well-documented, and it draws the reader into the story. - Helene Denlow >> It held my interest and filled in the gaps in my understanding of how Hitler was able to gain so much power so quickly with so little opposition. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a more in-depth look at this historical time. - Gloria Shaikun

[Time withut... Greg Zuerlein by jeff melnick

A sixth-round draft choice out of Missouri Western, St. Louis Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein has become a national phenomenon in a very short time in the NFL. The 24-year-old rookie from Lincoln, Neb., started the 2012-13 season by making his first 15 attempts, including three over 50 yards and a Rams record 60 yarder. He’s piling up nicknames as well. While some refer to him as ‘Legatron,’ most simply call him ‘Greg the Leg.’ Q. Were you known as ‘Greg the Leg’ in college, too? A. That actually started in high school. Fans used to chant, ‘Greg the Leg’ when I would go out for a field goal,

and then in college a few people knew about it. Now it’s starting to catch on again.

Q. What does it mean to BE such a big-time kicker so early in your career? A. The fans have been great getting behind not only me, but also the whole team. Hopefully I can keep doing well. Q. What’s the best thing about St. Louis? A. I just like the hometown feel. It’s kind of a big small town. Q. Talk about your chemistry with punter Johnny hekker, who also happens to be your holder? A. The coolest thing is we’re both rookies. We’re all a little bit awkward. I think you’ve got to be to play special teams. Q. Biggest purchase since becoming a pro? A. I haven’t bought anything yet. Maybe some shoes. Q. what kind of car do you drive? A. A ’97 Honda Accord. It’s a piece of junk. That’s something I need to buy. Q. What goes through your mind when lining up for a 50-plus or 60-yard field goal? A. Take your three steps back, two steps over and pick your spot where you want the ball to go. Q. Are you superstitious? A. No superstitions. I mean, a black cat can run across my path. I break mirrors—really I don’t have anything. Q. What’s your favorite sport to watch? A. Soccer. I love watching the English Premier League and the MLS here. But the EPL is still the premier league. Q. Any pre-game rituals? A. The only thing I do consistently is say a few prayers in the locker room.

Q. I’ve never asked a rookie this, but after your career is over many years from now, what do you want to be remembered for? A. Being the best. I think anyone in this locker room would say that. If you’re not trying to be the best, I think you’re selling yourself short. Anyone who plays a sport should always strive to be the best, and that’s what I do every day. Sponsored by

Dr. Paul Stein, an internist and concierge physician with offices at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, is not a car guy. “Some people are all about, ‘Hey, it’s Sunday, let’s go test-drive cars!’” he says. “Not me. I just want something I can rely on.” Stein lives in Clayton with his wife of more than 40 years, Sharon. They have two children.

Q. What do you drive? A. I’m currently driving a Lexus RX 350. Sharon drives a LS 430. This is our

ninth or 10th Lexus in the last 20 or so years.

Q. Why did you choose Lexus? A. They’re wonderful cars. They don’t break down! They require minimal

servicing, and they drive like a dream come true. I devote a lot of time and attention to my patients, and I’m a professor of clinical medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. I don’t have time to worry about my car.

Q. So service is important to you. A. Let me tell you a story about service. We bought our cars at Plaza Lexus from a guy named

Jeff Meadows. Recently my wife and I took a road trip to Aspen, Colo. While we were there, I drove over a horrendous bump and tore a chunk off the bottom of the car—it was all my fault. There are no Lexus dealers in Aspen. So I called Jeff in St. Louis. Within minutes, he took care of everything for us, including arranging to have the car towed 300 miles and getting us a rental car. He provided phenomenal service. That’s the kind of thing you don’t forget.

Sharon and Dr. Paul Stein photo by BILL BARRETT

Q. You’re a concierge physician. What does that mean? A. Most practices serve between 3,000 to 4,000 patients, so the physician spends just a few

minutes with each patient, or the patient never sees a doctor at all, but a nurse practitioner. We limit our practice to 600 patients. We’re part of a national network, MDVIP, owned by Procter & Gamble, with doctors in every major city. If you call, you get an appointment within 24 hours and plenty of individualized attention. If you’re traveling on business, you have access to other physicians in the network. We’re also staunch patient advocates and often go to bat for them with insurance companies.

With our great nurse to resident ratio, daily therapy, and local owners on-site, establishing close relationships with our Residents comes naturally at McKnight Place Extended Care. kingdom house by tony di martino

Change begins within. Those are good words to live by. But how can a social service agency help its clients change from within? “At Kingdom House, we supply the tools to build a better future,” says executive director Scott Walker. “By helping our clients gain economic independence, we help them build to empowerment. You’ve heard the saying, Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. Well, we teach our clients how to fish.” The agency, which serves about 10,000 people annually, has been a South City neighborhood anchor for more than 100 years. Today, the area is a mix of longtime residents and recent immigrants. “They’re proud people, but it’s hard to gain traction when you have no money, education, job skills or family support,” Walker says. “We first deal with their basic needs, such as food, clothing and childcare. Once they’re stabilized, we use a newly developed approach to help them identify and overcome their problems. It’s what we’ve always done, but now we’re taking it to the next level.” It starts with T.E.A.M—Together Empowering the Advancement of Members. “Each client, or team member, sits down with their team leader and sets goals,” Walker explains. “Then we connect them to whatever community resources they need to accomplish them.” Members are required to take two life-skills classes a year, choosing from a menu that includes GED tutoring, parenting, nutrition, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. Education is essential for building self-esteem and creating opportunities. “So we established a two-tiered Kingdom House Academy, consisting of adult education and job training, as well as mentoring programs to keep high school

students from dropping out,” Walker says. Kids are encouraged to consider college or career training. “We give them whatever support they need to continue their education, including tutoring, transportation to college visits, help with school applications, and setting up job-shadowing opportunities.” Financial literacy is a crucial step toward success and self-sufficiency. “In partnership with St. Louis Community Credit Union, we’re opening a micro-branch in our building that provides banking and credit union services,” Walker says. “This encourages members to save money and avoid those payday loan places. We’re also looking into establishing Individual Development Accounts, a United Way matched savings program for education, home ownership and entrepreneurship.” Kingdom House reaches out to the entire community, providing daycare for children ages 3 months to 6 years, after-school programs and tutoring for elementary school kids, a senior companion program, and many other services. “It’s a comprehensive, multi-generational approach,” Walker says. “By strengthening families, we can help them find pathways out of poverty once and for all. And if we do our job right, they’ll no longer need us.” For more information about Kingdom House, call 314.627.1228 or visit kingdomhouse.org. of the Kitchen Tour by catherine klene

Custom lighting, high-tech appliances and a certain flair are unlikely weapons in the fight against Type 1 diabetes. But that was exactly what co-chairs Kim Kuchan and Laura Roeder were looking for when they organized the third annual JDRF Heart of the Home Kitchen Tour, one of the organization’s most successful fundraisers. The tour takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 and includes 10 homes with a wide range of kitchen styles and features. “This year’s tour is bigger and better,” Kuchan says. “It’s a great event for a great cause, and it’s the perfect time of year. The weather is beautiful, and all the homes will be decorated for Thanksgiving. It’s warm and cozy.” Each kitchen has a sponsor, listed with the photos below. The four kitchens not pictured were sponsored by Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry, Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath, Nettie White Interiors, Unique Stone Concepts and Fabulous Finds by Heidi Hartwig This year’s tour features homes from Clayton, Ladue, Town & Country and University City. Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased online at jdrfstl.org or at 19 Overbrook Lane in Ladue on tour day. Each ticket will be printed with a starting address, and guests will receive a guide book with a map and descriptions of the kitchens. Kuchan hopes the tour will raise $35,000 and says all proceeds go toward JDRF’s groundbreaking research to find a cure and treatment for Type 1 diabetes. But the organization provides more than just research, she says. It provides hope and support to hundreds of families in the St. Louis area. “It is such a wonderful network,” she says. “Families reach out all the time as other families are newly diagnosed.”

she said

[yes! by rebecca koenig Whitney Bruce was nervous. She didn’t know how her sorority sister and best friend at the University of Kansas, Lindsay, would respond to the news she had to share. So instead of taking the elevator up to Lindsay’s dorm room like usual, Whitney delayed by walking up the stairs. photo by kayla smith She slowly made it to the room and spilled: After spending time with him in math class and Bible study, she realized she liked Lindsay’s older brother, Patrick Arthur, who lived in the fraternity house next door. She needn’t have worried, though—Patrick had already told Lindsay that he liked her best friend! With Lindsay’s full support, Whitney and Patrick will be married Dec. 29. After dating throughout college, Patrick took a job at Spring Venture Group in Kansas City. Whitney, a Clayton High School grad, took a job with Fellowship of Christian Athletes in St. Louis. Patrick’s plan to propose in May during Whitney’s visit was almost derailed by his unexpected, eight-hour emergency room trip to treat kidney stones. But the next day, on the couple’s five year anniversary, he surprised Whitney as she was touring her old sorority house and asked her to marry him. “Everyone jokes that, because he was on pain meds the next day, maybe he didn’t really propose!” Whitney says. The afternoon wedding will take place Dec. 29 by candlelight at Memorial Presbyterian Church; Walt Enoch, who works with Whitney at FCA and runs Bible studies for Rams and Cardinals players, will officiate. A reception will follow on the top floor of Windows on Washington. “I love downtown, and I like the loft-feel of it,” Whitney says. Bridesmaids will wear navy J. Crew dresses in different styles, and the events will feature white flowers, including hydrangeas, garden roses and sweet peas. Whitney says she and Patrick wanted a winter wedding because her parents were married in December nearly 40 years ago and because many of the couple’s friends, including Whitney’s Navy SEAL cousin, will be back in town for the holidays and able to attend. Patrick, who will join Whitney in St. Louis after the wedding, is keeping the honeymoon destination a secret.

suzy says by suzy bacino photos by suzy gorman

There’s so much bold jewelry in stores now. Can I wear silver with gold? Are there rules? Alert the (mixed) media! Pile it on: gold, silver, bronze—it all blends. Texture is key. When combining pieces mix smooth with braided, shiny with matte, tough skins with slick stones. The more the merrier when it comes to amount… so be bold and stack the deck!

Getting a little exercise during the holidays keeps the immune system charged and protects our bodies from buffet bulge. Cathleen Kronemer, personal trainer and certified lifestyle coach, Jewish Community Center Some people think if they can’t get their full hour in, they might as well skip exercising. Not true! Even 10 minutes two or three times a day can help keep us toned and fit. If you only have a little time, resistance training is more effective than cardio; it adds lean muscle mass, which burns calories even at rest. Here are a few tips for incorporating more activity into your daily routine. »» When shopping, park as far from the store entrance as possible. »» Take the stairs instead of the elevator. If taking the bus, get off at the stop before and walk the rest of the way. »» At work, get up every 20 minutes and do some squats or desk push-ups. »» At home, rake leaves instead of using a blower. Do sit-ups in front of the TV or just bench press the kids! Eric Emig, owner and personal trainer, Evolution Fitness Sign up for a morning boot camp class, which involves intense exercise in a one-hour session. To burn 150 calories in 10 minutes, try this in-home workout, done two or three times a day without equipment: Minute 1: brisk walk 2: jump rope, with or without a rope 3: jumping jacks 4: ski-hop: from a crouched position with knees together, jump side to side 5: fast walk 6: jump rope 7: walking lunges 8: jumping jacks 9: slow walk cool-down Try performing these steps at an 8 to 9 on an exertion scale of 1 to 10. It should be difficult to have a conversation because you’re out of breath. For simple strength training when you can’t get to the gym, try chair dips, push-ups, sit-ups, lunges and squats.

[ holiday sleep needs ] Up late last night? “Sleep is usually the last thing on our to-do list,” says Dr. Oscar Schwartz, medical director of The Sleep and EEG Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital West County. “But sleep deprivation can lead to personality changes and irritability and make pre-existing sleep issues like insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea or restless legs even worse. Add alcohol or large late-night meals, both common during the holidays, and a bad situation becomes even worse.” We need to honor our sleep needs even during the holidays, especially if we’re traveling. “Crossing time zones or driving long distances can make the problem worse or put others at risk,” he says. “Also, when people travel, they often don’t take their sleep treatments, like a C-PAP machine, with them. Sleep problems left untreated return immediately.” If you’re sleep-deprived and need to catch up, naps can help, but too many, or those taken too late in the day, can disrupt nighttime sleep, Schwartz cautions. “The best time for a nap is between 1 p.m. and no later than 3 p.m.,” he says. “A nap of an hour or less can be wonderfully refreshing.” If you sleep longer, you may be more sleep deprived than you think. “Needing more than one nap a day should trigger a sleep evaluation.”

[ super foods ] To keep from gaining weight during the holidays, pay attention to what you eat— and when. “The latest aid for calorie burning is green tea,” says Afua Bromley of Acupuncture St. Louis & Wellness Center. “A cup of green tea (no milk) in the morning, about 30 minutes before you eat, increases metabolism all day.” High-fiber foods, such as beans, slow digestion and keep you full longer. “A cup of lentil soup has 18 grams of fiber and lots of protein,” Bromley says. “Have some before you go to a party.” Cruciferous vegetables, including Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli and kale, also make ideal snacks. “They’re high in fiber and minerals, low-calorie and fat-free.” “The real problem foods during the holidays are simple carbohydrates, such as candy, cakes, cookies and other refined, highly processed foods,” Bromley says. “The body burns them quickly and stores them very efficiently as fats.” Protect yourself from over-indulging by keeping plenty of healthy, high-fiber foods on hand, such as pepper strips, baby carrots and celery sticks. “Munch them as-is or dip them in hummus for a stick-with-you snack,” Bromley advises. While you’re at it, add a few shiitake mushrooms: “They boost the immune system and help protect against germs shared at parties!”

[ permanent cosmetics ]

When you take care of your skin, you look fresh, rested and glowing.

Permanent, tattooed-on cosmetics help you wake up looking great, even without makeup. And who doesn’t want to save time during the holidays?

Dr. Helen Kim-James, Chesterfield Valley Dermatology This time of year, with the heat on, skin gets dry, flaky and itchy—and may even break out. Adequate water intake helps hydrate the skin, but so does proactive care with good cleansers and consistent moisturizing. Soap, especially the anti-bacterial kind, can irritate the skin barrier. I recommend using either CeraVe or Cetaphil cleanser for the entire body. During winter, switch from a lotion to a cream moisturizer and use it more often, applying more after every hand-washing. And as much as we love our long, hot showers when it’s cold outside, you’ll see a big difference in skin health by taking shorter showers at a lower temperature. When outdoors, wear gloves, sunscreen and moisturizing lip balm with sun protection. Dr. Joseph Muccini, MidAmerica Skin Health & Vitality Center Holiday skin care depends on your goal. You may just want a soft glow, or you may want to look less tired and scowling. Your dermatologist has a wide range of solutions for each issue. Things like Botox, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and intense pulsed light treatments all can help. Assess potential holiday challenges, your budget and what you don’t like about how you look. The more you want changed, the earlier you have to start.

Angela Durbin, So Natural Institute of Permanent Cosmetics Eyebrows are my favorite part of the face for permanent cosmetics. It’s important to choose brow color based on skin tone, which doesn’t change as we age, rather than hair color, which does. Well-shaped permanent brows can give you an instant brow lift, provide symmetry and make the eyes look more open. Eyeliner should be dark to define the eyes. Putting the pigment in the lash line correctly requires excellent technique for the color to stay and look smooth. Topical numbing is all that’s needed for comfort. Permanent cosmetics for the lips can make them appear fuller and more balanced. Virginia Schulte, owner, St. Louis Permanent Cosmetics Permanent cosmetics are a great solution for women with allergies, who can’t wear much makeup. Some people are hesitant to try permanent cosmetics because they think the process is painful. It isn’t. Topical numbing allows even the most pain-sensitive people to have the procedures comfortably. When they find out it doesn’t hurt, they refer their friends. What the client wants to achieve is key. They always have the final say as to shape and color, so there are no surprises. Eyeliner, eyebrows and lips can last anywhere from three to 10 years, depending on how the client’s body handles pigment. A lot of blood flows through the face. People on blood thinners tend not to hold pigment quite as long.

Just because soap is a staple doesn’t mean it can’t be a treat, too. In fact, wonderful-smelling (and feeling) soaps are the easiest way to treat yourself—or someone else— to a little something special. They are inexpensive, widely available and come in a stunning array of scents, from woody and spicy to sweet and floral. And then there’s the packaging, which seems to get more elaborate by the year. There are sleek pump dispensers, colorful paper-wrapped bar soaps and bright tins with scented surprises inside. So go ahead and splurge. You’re worth it, and it’s a small investment that will bring a smile to your face every time you lather up.

Jo Malone Red Roses Body & Hand Wash

Mor Essentials Neroli Clementine, Basil & Grape bars

Barr-Co. Original Scent Hand Soap and Bar

Soap & Paper Factory Roland Pine, Gardenia bars

Krigler Sparkling Diamond 22

Revered London perfumer Jo Malone is known for intense floral and herbal aromas derived from natural flora. There are scores of enticing options in this line, but with rose-scented body products making a big comeback, we chose Red Roses. And since it’s bound to elicit memories of a special someone from your childhood, this scent offers the bonus of nostalgia.

Fragrant vegetable soaps by MOR are luxuriously lodged in bright tins with gold lining, making them easy to take on everything from an overnight to a trip abroad. The bars contain moisturizing ingredients like vitamin E and shea butter, and both scents selected are blends of spicy and sweet.

Our very own K. Hall Designs in Brentwood makes this down-home product admired as far away as Harrod’s in London! A blend of milk, oatmeal, vanilla and vetiver fragrances, Barr-Co. is pure vegetable soap reminiscent of a simpler, quieter time, and it’s 98 percent natural. Company founder Kelley Hall-Barr describes it as “the hidden away nostalgia of Missouri caverns and slower times.”

The brainchild of three New York women, Soap & Paper Factory came about when a soap company and a paper company merged. It churns out natural shea butter soaps, creams and candles wrapped in recycled paper with elaborate designs. Roland Pine is a woodsy scent of Siberian fir, cilantro and citrus said to be calming. Gardenia, with coconut and citrus notes, is a scent that says sultry and mysterious.

Dating to 1904, Krigler scents are synonymous with luxury and were a favorite of celebrities like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Three different bars are offered: Chateau Krigler 12, Sparkling Diamond 22 and Manhattan Rose 44, each coming as a square, golden, molded soap with shea butter and vitamin E. The scents are subtle and European.

[ winter workouts ] by lauren madras

Don’t let a 4 p.m. sunset turn you off to your healthy habits. You can continue your workout routines comfortably and safely with only a few minor adjustments. Michelle Howard, apparel buyer at Missouri Running Company, suggests gearing up for temperatures about 20 degrees warmer than forecast. “A thin but waterproof jacket or micro-fleece leggings will make a big difference,” she says. “But you should be a little cold when you first leave the house, or you will want to discard layers.” It is recommended that runners have new shoes every six months or every 350 to 500 miles. When you buy the colder season’s shoes, anticipate wet or slick terrain and choose a pair with water-resistant with Gortex, allowing feet to stay totally dry throughout your run. Don’t hesitate to add time to your warmup, as colder temperatures may make it slower for your body to heat up. “Even more important than warming up, it’s essential to maintain your body temperature throughout your workout,” says Korbi Christenson, personal training manager at Wellbridge Gym and Spa in Clayton. “You can continue outdoor workouts as long as you’re geared up properly.” If you move your exercise indoors, Christenson recommends being aware of any changes in your daily routines. If you tend to drink less water when you aren’t warm from the weather, compensate so you don’t overheat during your workout. “If your gym offers it, you can use a steam room to help rehydrate skin that may be drying from cold winter air or artificial heat.” The drier climate can cause problems with irritation or abrasions from your clothing. “Especially if you’re more covered up during the winter, you can use Body Glide or Run Guard where seams might rub, or even apply it directly to your hands and face to prevent windburn,” Howard says. “If you have a harder time breathing in colder months, it may be due to the drier air. There are face masks called balaclavas that can help keep moisture in and protect your face.” Maintaining your fitness routine may even help stave off the common cold. However, gym common surfaces are danger zones. Protect yourself during cold and flu season by using the wipes, sprays or hand sanitizers available in your gym. “When approaching a piece of equipment, wipe down the surfaces you touch before you start using it,” Christenson says. “It’s also a courtesy to wipe it down when you finish. Consider periodically using anti-bacterial products on your hands and your face, as well, as you will tend to touch your face when you sweat. The most important thing during a winter workout is to know yourself. Only you can tell if you’ve warmed up enough—and if you have questions, ask.”

THE FAVORITES

Grilled Rack of Lamb, Grilled Zucchini Carpaccio, Steamed Mussels in Spicy Tomato Broth

This little Clayton bistro, whose name translates to ‘the brothers,’ has been a favorite since it opened 10 years ago. And it’s easy to see why. With its exposed brick walls, molded ceiling and low lighting it has created the intimacy of a charming European restaurant, the kind of place tourists might happen upon in delight. The menu is small and intimate, too, a blend of simple Italian cucina povera like Ravioli with Brown Butter Sage and fancier fare like Rack of Lamb with Herb Glaze. And while the food is quite good, the secret to success here is in the proverbial ‘whole package.’ I Fratellini has an appealing ambience thanks to the aforementioned decor and menu, as well as to its professional staff, from the maitre d’ who warmly greets you to the wait staff, which is efficient without being stuffy. The small menu’s blend of high and low cuisine offers a good assortment. Our starter of Grilled Zucchini Carpaccio ($12) was a prime example of

a simple dish, well done. Four paper-thin slices of zucchini were lightly grilled to still-firm and drizzled with high-grade olive oil, salt and pepper. A pile of thick-shaved parmigiano reggiano sat in one corner of the plate, ready to be enjoyed with every bite. Steamed Mussels in Spicy Tomato Broth ($13) was delicious, about 16 bivalves served in a densely flavorful tomato-based broth with garlic and red pepper flakes. Large slices of oiled and grilled Italian bread were served on the side, great for sopping up all that sauce. The Grilled Rack of Lamb ($26) was four meaty double chops, done to perfection, the fat charred crisp and the inside moist and pink. They had a light glaze of grain mustard laced with honey. The two sides on the plate illustrated the dichotomy of the menu. On the simple side were steamed asparagus spears, the tough ends shaved to reveal the tender white center. Much fussier were the scalloped potatoes, dense with cream and butter (and very tasty).

Greatest Culinary Influence

Growing up, my mom and sisters were always cooking.

Another winner was the Whole Roasted Pompano ($23). Simply prepared, the browned skin was scored for easy removal, and the delicate white meat was sweet and buttery. A mild salsa verde with capers added a bit of vinegary tang. The Grilled Tenderloin with Porcini Mushrooms ($25) was a generous filet nicely charred on all sides and covered with a brown sauce of woody porcinis heavily laced with wine. While the meat was delicious, I felt the mushrooms, considering their intense flavor, should have been more thinly sliced— and the sauce, alas, was lukewarm. The dessert menu here is long and nicely varied. We had the Blueberry Tart with Cinnamon Ice Cream ($9) and the Lemon Panna Cotta. The first had a simple crust and a ho-hum blueberry filling (not fresh blueberries). The panna cotta, an eggless Italian custard, was much better, with a hint of lemon and a wonderful creamy consistency. It was big and rich, with a yummy raspberry coulis, and easily could be shared.

Apronomics chef Frank Gabriele of Il Bel Lago

HOLIDAY PARTIES

by rebecca koenig | photos by bill barrett Italian was Frank Gabriele’s first language, and Italian food, his first love. A son of Giovanni Gabriele, owner of Giovanni’s on the Hill, he spent plenty of time growing up watching his parents work in the restaurant. “That’s where I developed a passion for the kitchen,” he says. Gabriele, now chef and co-owner of Il Bel Lago, had a brief stint working in restaurants in Rome when he was 19, but he attributes his culinary knowledge to the time he spent working alongside his father as executive chef at Giovanni’s. Hoping to appeal to families and a younger crowd, in 2002 Gabriele and his brother Carmelo opened Il Bel Lago, and the restaurant has served Italian specialties in Creve Coeur for the past decade. “We don’t want to be the special occasion restaurant; we want to be the Creve Coeur neighborhood restaurant,” Gabriele says. “I think after 10 years we’ve achieved that.” Gabriele says he enjoys working with infused oils, fresh herbs and local produce, and of course, being Italian, pasta. “It’s really got to be done the moment it’s ordered,” he explains. “The sauce should complement the noodle, and it should not be

half an onion, minced This zesty pancetta and tomato sauce is commonly associated with Lazio and Rome, but is actually from the town of Amatrice, which was just over the border into the Abruzzo before Mussolini redrew the maps. While pasta is cooking, heat oil in a skillet, add the diced meat and cook, stirring, until it browns. Remove meat to a sheet of absorbent paper with a slotted spoon and keep warm. Add onion and hot

pepper to the grease in the pan. When it begins to color, add well-drained tomato pieces. Cook, stirring for 5 to 6 minutes, then return the meat to the pot and heat it through. Drain pasta while still a little al dente. Add to the skillet with the sauce and cook 1 minute, stirring to coat the pasta. Serve with grated pecorino. Serves four

soupy. The focus is the pasta itself.” Gabriele works to ensure that his dishes look as good as they taste. “I’m a fanatic about presentation,” he says. “When you present food to the guest, the eye appeal has to be uncompromised. You need both components to make it a memorable meal.” And they do seem to be memorable, for he has customers who come in every week to try something new. “They don’t look at menus, they just say, ‘Tell Frank to take care of it,’” Gabriele says. “This restaurant is our home. I take that as an honor.” For the chef, meeting the people who eat at Il Bel Lago is the most rewarding part of his job. “At the end of the night, I put on my chef jacket and go out and see the faces and meet the people and get to know them like family.”

handicapped man who wants to experience sex before he dies is handled with sensitivity and humanity. Mark O’Brien (John Hawkes), a 38-year-old poet, lives in Berkeley, Calif., in the ’80s. As a result of polio at age 6, he has spent his life prone, on a stretcher, dependent on a mechanical oxygen source. Although it sounds like a heavy film, it isn’t. O’Brien has a wicked sense of humor, and his relationship with his priest (William H. Macy), who is the sounding board for all his sexual exploits and angst, is fraught with humorous irony. Helen Hunt plays the sex therapist who fulfills O’Brien’s goal, and in the process is deeply touched by his spirit. The film will leave you thinking about faith, fate and what it means to be human. Should You See It? Yes, the sex scenes are very graphic, but they are subsumed by the bigger issue of what it means to participate fully in life. —D.W.

Wreck-It Ralph >> Nostalgia alert! Grown-up gamers, arcade

junkies and fans of old-fashioned Disney magic will love Wreck-It Ralph, maybe even more than the kiddies they accompany to the theater. Featuring the voice talents of John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman, the animated film follows disgruntled bad-guy, Wreck-It Ralph, through several video game realms as he tries to prove he’s more than just a pixelated villain. As recent children’s movies tend to do, the film gets a little manic at times, but the fast pace fits its video-game setting. Although it’s a Walt Disney Animation Studios solo production, the movie is reminiscent of Disney-Pixar gems Monsters, Inc. and Toy Story, and features a lovely animated short. Should You See It? Yes! —R.K. Viewed at Chase Park Plaza Cinemas

FIBER-SEAL [ST. LOUIS by tony di martino The holiday entertaining season is about to begin, bringing with it festive dinners, cocktail parties and good fellowship...not to mention red wine stains on the white sofa, sticky handprints on the draperies and blobs of buche de Noël on the Aubusson rug. But there’s a way to keep clumsy guests and sugar-crazed kids from ruining your cherished carpeting, upholstered furniture, wall coverings and draperies. “Fiber-Seal St. Louis is a unique service that protects and cleans fine fabrics in your home or workplace,” says owner Bryce Roderick. The fabric care system works with all soft surfaces, including Oriental rugs as well as silk, linen, cotton, leather, rayon and other fabrics, he adds. “Once interiors are protected by our customized products, spots and spills clean up more easily, and carpet soil vacuums more readily.” Roderick’s mother-in-law, Donna Kassebaum, owned and operated Fiber-Seal for nearly a quarter of a century, treating thousands of homes. “I started helping her out when she broke her shoulder a few years ago,” says Roderick, who worked in banking and finance at the time. “I enjoyed it so much, my wife Robyn and I bought the business last March.” Kassebaum is still involved on an as-needed basis, he notes. Fiber-Seal’s exclusive, resin-based treatments repel liquids and protect fabrics without changing their color or texture, Roderick explains. “They reduce the absorbency of fibers so that most spills can be blotted or vacuumed away without becoming stains,” he says. “As a result, furnishings stay cleaner, harbor fewer allergens, and last longer.” The specially formulated products meet all government and industry safety standards, he adds. Roderick attributes the company’s enduring success to its personalized customer service. “We don’t just clean and treat your fabrics and go; we offer a year-long, renewable service agreement at no extra charge,” he says. Technicians educate clients on the latest cleaning techniques, providing a do-it-yourself kit for daily maintenance tasks and minor emergencies. “The kit lets clients take care of minor issues on their own, but we’re always on call to help with tricky spills, free of charge,” he says. “You don’t get an answering machine when you call us. My cell phone number is on my business card.” His strong work ethic is influenced by his mother-in-law. “Two hours before my sister-inlaw’s wedding rehearsal dinner began, Donna got a call from a panicked client who had spilled red nail polish on a white carpet,” Roderick recalls. “The place looked like a crime scene! But Donna fixed it, good as new.” Not every stain can be removed, he adds. “But you can limit damage, and often prevent it, with Fiber-Seal. Fine furnishings are expensive. Fiber-Seal is a safe, effective way to protect your investment.” Fiber-Seal St. Louis is located at 2928 S. Brentwood Blvd. Pictured on the cover: Bryce Roderick, Elisabeth Thompson, Amy Karas, Jennifer Row McLaughlin. For more information, call 314.962.7667 or visit fiberseal.com. as a young couple, they figured it would be a good starter community before moving on to bigger and better things. But 15 years later, they can’t think of a better place to raise their son Will, 11. Its central location is vital to their careers; Mike is a senior vice president and senior partner at Fleishman-Hillard and Becky operates Becky Slatin Communications. But it’s the outstanding schools and close community feel that make the Slatins proud to call Brentwood home.

Q. The schools were one of the main reasons you chose to live here. BS. The schools are a real plus. Brentwood Middle School has less than 169 kids, so it’s a great student-

teacher ratio. A lot of people say it’s like a private-school education in a public-school setting. MS. Because it’s a neighborhood school structure where the schools are built within the neighborhoods, our network of friends are parents of Will’s classmates, and we’re all in walking distance to each other. There’s something about proximity that builds relationships.

Q. What about Brentwood’s location appealed to you? MS. Having not been from St. Louis and living in U. City for two years, the city was the center of my universe.

It’s amazing how quickly you can get to other communities just from Brentwood. It’s a two-minute drive to Webster, Clayton, Richmond Heights, Rock Hill, Kirkwood... Having those so close was one of the key factors.

Q. Describe your community. MS. We have a lot of impromptu get-togethers. Last year we watched game seven of the World Series in

the backyard of a friend’s house. They had a fire pit and all the adults watched the game while the kids were running around crazy, having fun. That was the beauty of it. I never had those experiences as a kid, but there were 25 kids all having a blast.

Q. Describe a perfect Saturday in Brentwood. BS. Michael would start it with a run, or we might ride the bike path together. Then we might go to The

Heights and do something there, since we do try to stay pretty active with Will. Then we’d grab some lunch from a local restaurant and maybe see a movie. It’s not unusual to have a group of friends say we’re all getting together in front of one of the houses. MS. One thing Will would list is Ray’s Donuts. He and I walk to Ray’s on some Saturdays.

homework] Dear Homework,

Our West County home is old enough that we need to start replacing things like our roof. This allows us to rethink the whole look of the house. We would like to distinguish it from its similar neighbors, while also giving it a more Georgian or perhaps European feel. We wonder about adding a front porch and maybe painting the brick. What are your thoughts? ———Hoping for Something More

Dear Hoping for Something More: After

before

Your house starts off with considerable assets. Its symmetrical, nicely detailed façade and circle drive give it an impressive presence on the street. To move this to another level, we need to create the feeling of a great estate rather than a nice house in a subdivision. I would suggest the following: Replace the existing roof with an architect-grade, variegated-slate blend roof and add a black-painted, copper-roofed, Regency-styled front porch. Whitewash the existing brick, create a brick-walled, cobblestone-paved drive court, and replace the existing garage cupola with a bolder, taller ‘lantern type’ cupola. Finally, replace the existing planting to achieve a vertical emphasis with formal, clipped hedges, tall evergreens and hornbeans, and add various smaller details to finish the effect, such as front door color, roof cresting, Versailles boxes, etc. I hope this is the “something more” you were looking for. ———Homework
