[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] The holidays are a natural time for nostalgia. So when I read about the recent ‘tea room-style’ fashion show at The Gatesworth (in today’s issue), it brought back fond memories, not just of places like the Famous-Barr and Stix, Baer & Fuller restaurants, but of days when there were such things as tea rooms. It was a time when ladies lunched on alligator rolls and French onion soup. And no one was in a hurry to get back to the office. A lunchtime fashion show was a happening, not an annoyance, and getting to spend a leisurely, tea-room afternoon with your mom would have been a thrill beyond words. Today, kids are so wrapped up in their electronic devices that moms just go straight into voicemail (I’m not the only one, right?). Then there was the tea room lunch itself. I truly feel sorry for everyone who missed it. There is simply nothing to compare to the fancy chicken and tuna salads, creamed soups and, of course, the Jell-O molds. Today’s lunches, like just about everything else, are abbreviated and to-the-point. Do you want soup, sandwich or salad? Remember when the Neiman Marcus Zodiac restaurant had a lunch buffet? It would start with a demitasse of chicken bouillion (demitasse? bouillion?), then move on to the popover and strawberry butter. Only after that would you get up to view the array of soups and salads, breads and gelatins. Whoever says you can’t have it all probably never ate there. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

“jack frost ”
phraseology [ freyz • ŏ • lō • gy ]
Who is this little imp who nips at our noses and laces our windshields and windowpanes with ice? Jack Frost, the personification of winter, has popped up in American stories, songs and weather reports since at least the 1800s. Some scholars think his origins are in Viking or Norse folklore, and that his name is an anglicized version of ‘Jokul Frosti,’ or ‘icicle frost.’ Surmised to be the son of Kari, one of the Norse wind gods, he was often portrayed as a mischievous, invisible spirit who could occasionally turn vicious, burying his victims in snow. But the first modern depiction of this frosty figure is thought to be artist Thomas Nast’s icicle-clad man in an 1864 edition of Harper’s Weekly. Over the years, he gradually morphed into the loveable elf most of us know from storybooks and cartoons.

COVER STORY
IT’S MAGICAL SAINT LOUIS BALLET by tony di martino SINCE 1892, CHILDREN HAVE BEEN ENTHRALLED by Tchaikovsky’s The
Nutcracker. The magical tale of a young girl’s Christmas Eve dream features a nutcracker prince, a sugarplum fairy, battling mice, toy soldiers and dancing snowflakes. Local families gather at the Touhill Performing Arts Center every December to enjoy Saint Louis Ballet’s production of the beloved classic, choreographed by artistic director Gen Horiuchi. Horiuchi knows The Nutcracker is the first ballet many children see, and he wants to make sure it’s not the last. “Audiences today are used to fast-paced video games and social media,” he says. “So we incorporate spectacular special effects, pyrotechnics, new choreography and lots of razzle-dazzle. We keep the story simple and accessible. We want to give people of all ages the best possible experience, so they come back for more!” Now in his 15th year as company director, Horiuchi is an expert at dazzling audiences, bringing a unique blend of artistry and showbiz smarts to the job. Raised in Tokyo, Japan, he won a prestigious international ballet competition at age 15. After studying at the School of American Ballet, he was invited by famed choreographer George Balanchine to join New York City Ballet, where he rose to principal dancer. He’s danced on Broadway in Cats and choreographed the opening ceremony of the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. This season, Saint Louis Ballet has plenty to offer in addition to The Nutcracker, which runs Dec. 18 through 23 and is sponsored by Emerson. “We’re the only

professional resident ballet company in the region presenting three fully mounted productions annually, reaching about 16,000 people,” Horiuchi says. “We’re also a nationally recognized leader in dance education, serving more than 300 students at our Chesterfield school.” On Feb. 13 and 14, just in time for Valentine’s Day, the troupe presents Love is in the Air, a contemporary romp to romantic melodies such as George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, with choreography by Francis Patrelle and Emery LeCrone. May 8 through 10, the company performs an extravagant new production of Don Quixote, featuring a mix of traditional ballet and Spanish dance. The performance, choreographed by Horiuchi, is St. Louis’ first original production of the ballet. “Audiences will love the energy, fire and passion,” he says. Special themed luncheon or dinner days are offered on certain dates, with tickets for those performance dates sold separately. The Sugar Plum Fairy Luncheon, which takes place at the Touhill prior to The Nutcracker matinees Dec. 20, 22 and 23, is especially popular. “It’s always a hit—costumed dancers from the ballet mingle with the kids and bring the characters to life,” Horiuchi says. Horiuchi wants people to know there’s more to ballet than dying swans. “Our dancers defy gravity live, with no do-overs, right before your eyes!” he says. “When everything goes just right, there’s an amazing sense of unity between audience and performers. This is not an elitist, intimidating art form, but an incredibly dynamic experience everyone can enjoy.”

TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.
Your mother told you that a penny saved is a penny earned. In Ballwin, ‘Pennies Make Sense,’ and kids from the city’s public and parochial elementary schools have collected nearly $6,000 in coins that will go toward meals for the hungry this holiday season. Throughout the month of October, with sponsorship by Ballwin’s police department, school kids raised $5,947 (and change), more than twice the record total—$2,471—set just last year. This is the fundraiser’s 20th anniversary. Since it kicked off in 1994, the effort has collected more than $27,000 … enough for about 108,000 meals for the needy throughout the metro. Participants included kids and staff from Henry, Ballwin, Claymont and Woerther elementary schools, Selvidge Middle School, and Holy Infant. That’s a lot of coinage. And heavy. Hundreds of pounds were collected—not all in pennies, of course— that somebody had to count. The task fell to River City Casino, which graciously counted the change for the second year in a row. The check presentation to the St. Louis Area Food Bank was made at Henry Elementary, which raised the most money of the six schools during the drive, a whopping $2,252.74! For the naughty, ’tis the season to mega-shop for gifts they have no intention of actually buying. Shoplifters are out in droves, some of them in organized gangs, and it’s easier to hit a store where staffers are distracted by real, paying customers. Most ‘hitters’ aren’t sophisticated enough to work together, of course. They’re just knuckleheads committing crimes of opportunity, and one recent incident in Chesterfield sounds like an outtake from the movie Mall Cop. This dude took a pair of sweatpants from Macy’s by pulling them on over the trousers he was wearing, and bowled over a security guard as he made his getaway into the mall. The guard wasn’t hurt, but the thief had to have looked like a fashion victim as he scooted away. Apparently he wasn’t apprehended at the mall. Creve Coeur is one of the most energy-efficient towns under the sun. At least in Missouri, in particular, and in the Midwest, in general, according to Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC). At the Solar Power International conference in Las Vegas recently, our city of the broken heart received the Community Renewables Project of the Year award, which recognizes advancement of renewable energy use through an innovative community approach. Residents and businesses either enrolled in a renewable energy certificate program or installed solar panels, thereby reducing carbon emissions equivalent to taking more than 2,200 cars off the road for a year,
OF THE
says IREC. Creve Coeur became only the second EPA ‘Green Power Community’ in Missouri, and the fifth in the Midwest. To officially ‘go green,’ the community needed to offset 3 percent of community-wide energy use through renewable sources. Creve Coeur offset 3.77 percent. Way to go! What makes Strange Donuts in Kirkwood even stranger than the doughnuttery’s flagship store in Maplewood? Well, for one thing, it’s itty-bitty. For another, the joint’s address is sort of strange: 107½ E. Argonne Ave.—hand-painted in blue on a window, with the zero being a doughnut with sprinkles. And like the Maplewood store, the Kirkwood location welcomes those with a hankering for the sweet fried treats well into the night, which is a little strange for a somewhat staid suburban locale. Thursday through Saturday nights the store reopens at 9 p.m. to cater to late-night tastes until midnight. Of course, there’s a practical element here: the midday shutdown allows plenty of time for them to recover from the morning rush and fry up some new O-shaped pastry after the day shift. And they should be able to cater to all the late-night munchers— unless the goodies run out before the clock strikes 12. Same policy goes for the daylight hours. Strange is open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m—or, as Pappy’s Smokehouse and any self-respecting barbecue joint says, ‘until sold out.’ Yes, you can get a classic long john or glazed doughnut here, but why would you when there are varieties such as Grasshopper (no insects were harmed), Snickerdoodle and Nutella Chip? Is there room for yet another brew in the metro, home to Budweiser, so-called ‘King of Beers’? Or in Maplewood, where Schlafly, our second-largest brewery, is situated? And what about Kräftig, the Brentwood-based company founded by Billy Busch? To answer all three questions: of course! Craft brews have made that the case. Kräftig has been around only a few years, Schlafly since 1993, and Anheuser-Busch for a century and a half. Then came upstarts like Urban Chestnut and Morgan Street, and countless other varieties that may have started in someone’s garage. Your neighbor might have a tasting room behind the bar in his den for showing off homemade brews. Now, Schlafly has a neighbor in Side Project Cellar, a craftbeer tasting room at 7373 Marietta Ave., just a few blocks from the Schlafly’s home base on Southwest Avenue. Yes, we’re talking Schlafly’s bushels of apples to Side Project Cellar’s spoonful of applesauce: The tasting room in no way is trying to compete with the growing brewery. It’s there to provide a taste of Perennial Artisan Ales, which are probably worth a try, considering one of their frothy, frosty concoctions
[ TT TRIVIA ] WHAT DOES KRÄFTIG MEAN?
won gold for ‘Experimental Beer’—Abraxas, a Mexican chocolate stout aged in rye whiskey barrels—during the Festival of Barrel-Aged Beers in Chicago recently. Bud, the ‘great American lager,’ is a one-trick pony, when you think how beer varieties now are more plentiful than colors in the 64-Crayola box. (Burnt Sienna, anyone?) While Crayolas don’t come in ‘lite,’ they do offer a washable variety. Main Street in St. Charles is as charming as any historic avenue in the metro and beyond, a cobblestoned thoroughfare with shops and restaurants in 19th and 20th century buildings lining either side. Of a Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon, it is family-friendly. Fridays and Saturday nights can be more rambunctious, with an overflow of the drinking crowd, when it can be as rowdy as Laclede’s Landing, Soulard or Washington Avenue in St. Louis. At any rate, getting to old Main Street isn’t quite as attractive a proposition on parallel or connecting streets in the vicinity. But city planners aim to change that, with what’s been dubbed the Fifth Street Gateway Project. Landscape architecture will be a key component to making the city’s main drag less of a drag on the eyes: more greenery, wider sidewalks, a landscaped median, a stone wall to border part of the route and decorative lighting more consistent with the heritage of a city founded in 1809. The city approved details of the plan and was accepting bids for various design and construction aspects through Nov. 14. Work could begin as early as Jan. 15. Surveillance video of the seven people suspected of dine ’n’ dash at a Chinese buffet shows folks who look like they haven’t missed a meal—ever. County police are on the lookout for five men and two women, all heavyset, who ate at the restaurant in the 8500 block of Watson Road and left the check for the restaurant to pick up. Various images show several rotund fans of Asian fare inspecting menus or just standing around taking up space … lots of it. The ‘Sloppy Seven’ must have eaten a whole heck of a lot, because they face charges of felony stealing once they are brought to justice. ST. LOUIS Are you one of those holiday decorators who can’t wait to deck the halls, dragging boxes of regalia down from the attic and starting to

hang lights inside and out, like, right after Halloween? Or are you still not feelin’ the love, even though here we are nearly a week after Thanksgiving, the ‘official’ start of a homeowner’s season for greetings? Either way, you might enjoy taking in how other folks jolly-up their joints at the 23rd annual Webster Holiday House Tour, sponsored by the PTO of Hixson Middle School in Webster Groves. A half-dozen homes all around the town will be decked out (and in), from the sidewalk through the common rooms, like they’re right out of Jimmy Stewart’s Bedford Falls. Tickets for the Sunday, Dec. 7, event are available for $15 until Friday at Hixson, or Saturday at select merchants in Webster. After that, they’re $18 on tour day in Eden Seminary’s Schroer Commons. During or after the tour, musicians will fa-la-la at Eden, where refreshments and boutique treasures also can be found. Comprising the lion’s share of Hixson’s annual PTO budget, tour monies are earmarked for field trips, teacher grants, student activities, and other expenses not covered in the school budget, so come on out and support the kids!

REDUCE RISK AHM INSURANCE GROUP]
by tony di martino
SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS OWNERS and top executives have all the fun. They call the shots, they’re usually well paid for their efforts, and they get the best parking spots in the company garage. But with great rewards comes great responsibility and risks. AHM Insurance Group helps business owners, corporate leaders and top executives navigate those risks. AHM, established in 1983, combines an experienced team of insurance professionals and a broad range of premium insurance products. “My colleagues and I work separately or as a team to protect our clients from every angle,” says personal risk management specialist Fonda Hereford. “Business owners, executives and other leaders have unique needs and a high risk of exposure. We help them understand potential risks, identify opportunities, create measurable value, and anticipate whatever changes might be along the horizon.” A thorough risk evaluation now can help protect your assets in the future, Hereford notes. She starts by conducting an in-depth interview with the client or their financial adviser to determine their needs. “We can cover your homes, cars, collections and other possessions against theft, accidents and natural disasters; establish a worker’s compensation plan for your household employees; and protect you against identity theft and catastrophic personal lawsuits,” she says. “We make sure you have enough coverage to replace everything you own in a total-loss situation, with no out-of-pocket expense.” Mimi Schmid, a long-term care (LTC), Medicare and disability planning specialist, helps individuals, couples and small groups tailor health care coverage to their specific needs. “LTC insurance is an essential part of estate planning today,” says Schmid, who often works with occupational specialties, such as surgeons and executives, and people planning for retirement. “About 10,000 people turn 65 every day. They’re living longer than ever before, and there’s a 70 percent chance they’ll need ongoing care in their home or a facility at some point. I represent the major LTC insurance carriers and plans, from traditional LTC coverage or one of the newer hybrid products. With the health care industry in constant motion, it’s important to have someone who can guide you through the risks and guard your assets.” Schmid also assists clients with individual/family medical coverage, Medicare transition and supplementation issues, and corporate disability insurance planning. Laura De Luca is AHM’s life and disability insurance specialist. “I focus on individual life insurance, with an eye toward income replacement and estate planning needs, and on business life insurance and disability insurance, including key person and buy/sell issues for business succession planning,” she explains. “My goal is to make sure my clients have the coverage they need to protect their income and estate.” Every client has needs, risks and goals, De Luca notes. “At AHM, we wrap you in a bubble of coverage to protect you, your family and your assets anywhere in the world—including the Internet. Our brokers can handle any group or individual risk-management need. You are unique. Your coverage should be, too.”

TOWN TALK
THE GIFT OF GIVING by tony di martino St. Francis of Assisi said, “For it is in giving that we receive.” Little did he know that, in addition to passing along words of moral wisdom, he was also giving solid financial advice. “Knowing you’re helping others through charitable giving is one of the best feelings in the world,” says Michael Howard, CEO of YouthBridge Community Foundation. But doing good also can be an opportunity to do well, he adds. “At YouthBridge, we help integrate charitable giving into your overall financial plan.” YouthBridge, which began as an orphanage in 1877, connects community donors to community needs. “We’re the bridge that joins individual and business donors to nonprofits, nonprofits to resources, and financial advisers to charitable fund opportunities for their clients,” Howard explains. Everyone involved benefits: “We enable donors to maximize their social impact by helping them to define and achieve their philanthropic goals,” he says. “We help area nonprofits, especially those focused on children and youth, become stronger and more financially sound. And our experts work with your financial advisers to create customized, tax-advantaged giving strategies that complement your tax and estate planning strategy and provide ongoing support to your favorite charities.” A donor-advised fund (DAF), assets given to a community foundation for the purpose of redistribution to nonprofits, is more flexible and less costly than a private foundation when it comes to transferring wealth, Howard notes. It also offers numerous tax advantages. “Private foundations pay a 1 or 2 percent excise tax on net investment income per year, but there is no income tax on a DAF,” he says. “Also, a DAF allows donors to take a federal income tax deduction up to 50 percent of adjusted gross income for cash contributions, versus 30 percent of AGI for private foundations. And a DAF offers more favorable deductible limits for gifts of stocks, and you can contribute appreciated securities without incurring capital gains liability.” A DAF, unlike a private foundation, is not subject to a 5 percent annual mandatory distribution requirement, and also offers the option to give anonymously, Howard adds. “In short, giving through a community foundation is an effective long-term approach to giving in a variety of situations, particularly if you want to grow your contributions tax-free over time, or need a charitable tax deduction now, but also want the flexibility to make distributions in the future. Best of all, these tax advantages not only benefit the donor, but leave more money available for gifts to the community.” Just in time for the holidays,YouthBridge is offering yet another way to give and receive at the same time. “YouthBridge gift cards, which can be branded with your company’s logo, let your valued clients and employees support the qualified charity of their choice,” Howard says. “You build loyalty by being part of their values-based decision making— and the cards are tax deductible. Even more important, it’s an easy, fun way to strengthen the community through charitable giving.”

COVER STORY
SPARKLING SERVICE [THE DIAMOND FAMILY WE’VE ALL HEARD ABOUT ‘THE FOUR C’S’: color, cut, clarity and carats. But no amount of knowledge regarding these would mean anything without the help of the right jeweler. A diamond will be among the biggest—and most important—purchases of your life. Do you really want to base it on Wikipedia? The jewelry business is both personal and professional, something the Haddad family has known for more than 35 years. “We try to make purchasing jewelry both fun and educational,” says president Michael Haddad. He and his brothers, Alex and Anthony, took over operations and marketing about seven years ago from their dad Rocky, who opened the store in 1978. “Anyone can say they have great customer service, but we provide an experience that can’t be taught,” Haddad says. Everyone who walks through the door is offered a drink and allowed to browse on their own without any pressure, he points out. “It’s a relaxed sales environment. We are here to serve and to treat people fairly.” Working with a trusted family business makes a big difference when buying jewelry, he adds. “Here, you will deal with people who really care about you. We have a vested interest in telling the truth, standing behind our products and being available for any future service issues.” All that has made them the trusted family jeweler for generations of customers. “Every year, we have a customer appreciation party, where Ozzie Smith and Jackie Joyner-Kersee are on hand for autographs.” This kind of service is part of the store’s responsibility as a Master IJO Jeweler, Haddad says, an accreditation from the Independent Jewelers Organization given to approximately 800 jewelry stores in the world and based on certain business and ethical standards. “We are one of only two stores in the St. Louis area with this accreditation,” Haddad says. Also, as a Master IJO Jeweler, The Diamond Family
is part of an exclusive buying group allowed to import quality diamonds directly from the cutters in Belgium before the rest of the market gains access. “We travel to Antwerp twice a year, and we often purchase diamonds for specific customers while we’re there,” he says. “We always bring them back Belgian chocolates, too!” Haddad says he seeks to make the shopping experience unique. For holiday shoppers, The Diamond Family is offering its ‘Wish for a White Christmas’ promotion for the third year in a row. Customers will receive a full refund for purchases made through Dec. 18 if it snows 2 inches or more on Christmas day. Next year, the store will offer a counter sketch studio to create custom pieces. “It’s incredible,” he says. “The software asks clients questions about their design aesthetic and suggests jewelry based on their preferences. We can further customize the suggestions to get exactly what they want. About a week later, the jewelry is in their hands.” At the end of the day, Haddad says, it’s all about the customers. “It’s not just about one sale for us,” he says. “If you buy your engagement ring here, we also want you to come back for the other milestones in your life. We’re honored to have you in our store.”

THIS NEW RESTAURANT sprung up at the corner of Eager Road and Brentwood Boulevard in conjunction with an equally brand-spanking new Drury Inn. Bonefish is part of a national fish restaurant chain started in 2000 in St. Petersburg, Fla. The emphasis is on flown-in-fresh fish and moderate pricing in a more upscale atmosphere. They deliver on the atmosphere: This is a pretty place, with light-wood accents and mostly booth and hightable seating (neither of which I find as comfortable as ‘normal’ tables). And the servers are all dressed in chef’s whites, which, while clever, I found unsettling since it implied a level of expertise that they did not have. Our first server was unable to answer our questions and didn’t offer to; our second, while more willing to help, was no more knowledgeable. Settled into our booth, we started with Mussels Josephine ($9.90), which was excellent in every way. The large serving of Prince Edward Island mussels was inherently sweet and served in a delicious preparation of white wine, butter, lemon and basil dotted with
sautéed onions, garlic and fresh tomatoes. So the bar was set high when we ordered our entrees, and some dishes delivered; others didn’t. Overall, the value is good—entrees come with a seasonal veggie and an additional side of your choosing, as well as a choice of sauce. But for real foodies, it’s all about the flavor and quality of food. And the lemon-butter on my Sea Scallops + Shrimp dish ($17.90) tasted ‘pre-fab’ and most certainly contained something less pure than lemon and butter. Additionally, most of the fish entrees come ‘woodfired,’ which here means grilled over oak, and the result is a very strong flavor that overwhelms the delicate fish. Rather than being slightly crisped at the edges (shrimp) or butter-seared (scallops), our scallops and shrimp dish appeared to be placed on the grill without the benefit of butter or oil, which would have given them more flavor and texture. Instead, they tasted only of the black grill marks from the hot surface. The same was true of our Rainbow Trout ($17.70), although the sauce

>>We really liked the interior, and the fish was terrific (other than the one dish we had to send back for being too rare). Even though it was crowded, we were seated quickly and the waitress was nice. My one complaint is how slow the kitchen was—we waited and waited for drinks and food. —KATHY C. OF WARSON WOODS

we chose for it, Mango Salsa, was fresh-made and quite good. An order of steamed lobster tails ($29.90) was very good. The tails were meaty, sweet and came with real butter, warmed for dipping. A choice rib-eye steak ($25.70) was good and stood up a little better to the oak grilling. A side of garlic whipped potatoes made for a great accompaniment, as did the seasonal vegetable, spaghetti squash. For dessert, the Macadamia Nut Brownie ($6.90) was totally pleasurable, if super-sweet. The rich, salty nuts went well with the chocolate cake, raspberry coulis and vanilla ice cream. The Pumpkin Crème Brûlée ($7.30), a seasonal special, was delicious too, even though it was hard to ignore the mound of ‘whipped topping’ served with it. This kind of shortcut brings a place down: It reflects poorly on the overall culture of a restaurant, especially one that emphasizes freshness. Bonefish tries hard not to look or taste like a chain restaurant, but it needs to address a few shortcomings before accomplishing that goal.

Celebrated baker and cookbook author NICK MALGIERI returns to St. Louis Dec. 9 to present his latest, Pastry: Foolproof Recipes for the Home Cook. James Beard-winning baker and CRAVINGS owner Tim Brennan hosts the 6:30 p.m. event, which for $35 includes Malgieri’s demonstration, munchies and a copy of the book for signing. RANDY McARTHUR has passed ownership of his legendary eponymous bakery to SCOTT and SHEILA RINABERGER’S company, Live to Venture Holdings. The couple are committed to preserving and continuing the McARTHUR BAKERY legacy. Rinaberger calmed the fearful McArthur faithful, reporting that “while plans are to enhance the café menu, all employees, bakers and recipes will remain.”

HAPPY [HOUR
by jorie taylor HOT TO TROT: A Word on Hot Beverages >> Picture this. You trudge through the knee-deep snow after a
long day of work, back turned against the biting wind. At last you get home and a fire is already crackling. You fold yourself under your cashmere throw and reach for --- what? Red wine? Hot tea? We can do better than that! Let’s make some hot buttered rum.
>> I have a close relationship with hot cocktails. I can remember
my parents microwaving brandy when they were feeling under the weather, and my grandmother has an amazing secret mulled wine recipe that includes Everclear (she was a pretty cool lady). My first ‘Snuggler’ as an après ski beverage was a nearly religious experience. I have made the simplest of hot toddies using a hot poker submerged in the cocktail to heat it, and I have experimented with 500-person batches of hot cider. In short: these cocktails can bust your flu, warm your caroling chords, make your guests feel at home, or provide just a touch of nostalgia as a warm nightcap.
>> After all my ‘market research’ in the field of heated alcohol, hot buttered rum remains the ultimate favorite. It allows for quite a bit of personalization, and the silky texture from the butter adds just enough richness to qualify for dessert at a dinner party. This particular recipe requires a bit of work, but from one home barkeep to another, I can assure you it is well worth the efforts. I call this version the Jersey Turnpike.
JORIE TAYLOR IS A CERTIFIED SOMMELIER AND THE BAR MANAGER AT CIELO AT THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL.
// TRY THIS AT HOME // [ hot buttered rum Start with a dutch oven or large stock pot and add a stick of butter. Heat over medium until the solids separate and the butter begins to bubble and brown. Add ½ c. brown sugar or honey and stir to combine. Allow this mixture to bubble again. Stir in 1t.vanilla extract or one whole vanilla bean, split. Add 1T whole cloves and 2T freshly chopped ginger. Once the mixture becomes fragrant, add 2 quarts apple cider and 1 quart fresh lemon juice. Allow mixture to boil, then add 2 Earl Grey Tea bags and steep four minutes. Remove the tea bags, add ½ bottle of Laird’s Bonded Applejack and 1 bottle spiced rum--I prefer Cruzan 8-year. Add Angostura bitters to taste. Garnish with an orange wheel.

12/5 bells and bowls holiday celebration
for movies that captivate both kids and adults. Big Hero 6 has plenty of quips for the parents, and the perfect plot to keep any child who has ever wished to be a superhero (and isn’t that every one?) in a trance. Hiro (voice of Ryan Potter) is a 14-year-old robotics prodigy who needs a little prodding from his older brother, Tadashi (Daniel Henney), to put his intelligence to good use. When a devastating event turns Hiro’s life upside down, he turns to his friends and Baymax, an inflatable robot invented
villian. The group of six transforms into hightech heroes, and each scene feels like a product of every child’s wildest dreams. There is action, suspense (could be too scary for the under–7 crowd) and heartfelt moments. If you didn’t think a robotic marshmallow man could evoke emotion, think again—there were definitely tears falling in my row! SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Yes! —K.M. VIEWED AT CHASE PARK PLAZA CINEMAS

FULLER FOCUS [ONELIFE WEIGHT LOSS & WELLNESS SOLUTIONS
MEDICAL ADVISER DR. ANDREA ITZKOWITZ, LICENSED PSYCHOTHERAPIST JENNIFER LUSTMAN, AND PRESIDENT/OWNER TERESA SCOTT SYED; NOT PICTURED: WELLNESS CONSULTANT JULIE BAUER
by tony di martino “NOT A PRETTY PICTURE, IS IT?” Teresa Scott Syed says, showing a photo
of herself taken four years ago at age 62. “I look like I’ve been ridden hard and put away wet. And believe me, that’s exactly how I felt!” Two late-life children, a stressful job as a financial consultant, and a rough divorce had pushed her blood pressure through the roof, and her weight up to 214 pounds. “I wanted to start all over again, so I could help others who felt as overwhelmed as I did,” she recalls. “But first, I had to put my own life back together again.” Syed lost 70 pounds, 10 dress sizes, 14 percent of her body fat and a total of 98 inches in just one year. She no longer needs blood pressure medication. Today, as president and owner of OneLife Weight Loss & Wellness Solutions, she and a team of experts help men and women lose weight and keep it off. “We provide the tools, support and encouragement you need to get control of your life, physically, mentally and emotionally,” she says. “We help you become your best person, the butterfly you were meant to be.” The OneLife method requires a serious commitment, Syed notes. The program calls for two meals a day, a total of 500 calories, with each meal consisting of a protein, a vegetable, a starch and a fruit. The ‘secret weapon’ is HCG: “HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a natural hormone produced in a woman’s body when she’s pregnant,”
Syed explains. “Taken in small amounts in conjunction with the diet, it suppresses appetite and triggers the body to burn up to 4,000 calories a day of stored fat, resulting in rapid weight loss of up to 30 pounds or more in 40 days.” HCG is available in drops or prescription tablets and injections, and OneLife offers all three options. Clients follow the low-calorie phase of the program for up to 40 days, followed by a 42-day maintenance period, until they drop the desired amount of weight. But weight loss is just the first step. “To help you achieve permanent change and keep the weight off, OneLife provides a comprehensive approach to wellness, incorporating stress management, movement, proper eating, and understanding your relationship with food,” Syed says. The OneLife team includes a physician, as well as access to a nurse practitioner who specializes in hormone replacement therapy, a licensed psychotherapist, a nutritionist, a certified personal trainer and a meditation consultant, if desired. “We work together to help you make healthier decisions.” Syed enjoys helping clients reach their goals. “They not only look better, they feel healthy, joyful and self-confident,” she says. She can relate. “With every pound I lost, I felt like I was coming out of a cocoon. I’m 66, and I’m in better health now than I was in my 30s and 40s. I got my body back—and my life. I want to share that joy with others.”

Ask the Expert
Question:
I would like to do something to look younger, especially with the holidays coming up. Is there anything that will give me a lift that won’t leave me recuperating when I have so much to do? Answer: At the age of 30 we begin to lose volume in our face due to loss of bone, thinning skin and redistribution of the fat in the face. This causes a loss of the smooth contours of the face and its youthful oval contour, resulting in flattening of the facial features.
Gregory Branham, MD
Washington University Facial Plastic Surgery Center
To achieve the goal of rejuvenation with little downtime, you should consider fillers to restore volume and give you a lift. While not replacing the facelift, which resuspends severely sagging tissues, the newer fillers restore volume to the upper cheekbone and midfacial hollow. By restoring lost volume, the midfacial tissues are elevated to a more youthful position and the cheek folds become less prominent. Until recently, the most commonly used fillers (hyaluronic acid, or HA’s) lasted only 9 to 12 months. With the introduction of Voluma® approximately one year ago, there is now an HA filler that can restore volume for up to two years. Advantages of the HA fillers include the fact that they produce immediate results and do not require a donor site like fat injections. Also, to reduce downtime, Voluma is placed deeper into tissue which means there is less bruising and swelling. Whether you are new to fillers or have had them in the past, Voluma is worth consideration as it works towards volume restoration rather than chasing fine lines and wrinkles. This type of filler can lead to a more natural and less swollen result.

Fillers are not typically used in the upper face, so to lift the brow and smooth fine lines and wrinkles, neuromodulators such as Botox® or Dysport® are key. A facial plastic surgeon can recommend a treatment customized to meet your unique goals. Do you have a question for one of our specialists? If so, email WU.Physicians@wustl.edu for consideration in Ask the Expert.

A BETTER
The traditional time for New Year’s resolutions is still a month away, right? That kind of thinking will only make your job a little harder come Jan. 1. Or it might just sabotage your chance of success altogether.
NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT
“I tell folks, ‘Let’s change right now,’” says Steve Baum, tribe leader of Iron Tribe Fitness in Brentwood. “Most people wait until January to set resolutions, but if you are not willing to do it right now, you are going to keep putting it off. You are better doing whatever little bit you can until you build a routine,” he says. Valerie Silberman, a personal trainer and class teacher at the St. Louis Jewish Community Center, has a strategy for making it all easier. “One of the biggest tricks is to have your bag packed for the gym in the morning, have your snack and go straight from work,” she says. “I knew that if I went home first, I would feel warm and comfortable and I wouldn’t want to go back out in the cold. If you get in the habit of going straight from work, you are more likely to get it done.”
NO EXCUSES!
Appointments overcome procrastination, Baum says. “Hire a personal trainer, make plans to meet a friend or get into a program that makes you stick to a plan. That way you are accountable not only to yourself, but to other people.” Also, small classes can lead to friendships that create motivation. You get a feeling of camaraderie and it becomes supportive when you get to know each other, Silberman says. “You are working hard but still having fun.”
Why Wait/Weight?
Especially when it comes to improving your body, there’s no time like the present. After all, the more you eat, the more dieting you’ll have to do later. And with exercise, the sooner you start, the sooner sweat and exertion will become part of your lifestyle. ADD WEIGHTS
“Cardio training by itself is good for your heart, but it is not going to do a lot to speed up your metabolism permanently,” Baum says. “Weight training will benefit your heart strength and build lean muscle.” A body with more lean muscle functions more efficiently and looks better. “Lean muscle requires more fuel, which ramps up your metabolism and has other benefits for things such as bone density,” he explains.
A METHOD TO THE MADNESS
The right diet for weight loss means the right foods, not simply less food. “There is no such thing as a right or wrong food—it is a lifestyle that people need to shoot for,” Baum says. Too often, he says, “People restrict calories, and when you restrict calories your metabolic rate slows down.” Especially around the winter holidays, it’s tempting to be naughty. “A lot of people gear up by telling themselves, for example, that they will have to exercise for 60 minutes if they eat this piece of pie,” Silberman says. “That puts a thought process to it, and maybe they won’t eat the pie. I have always been of the mentality that I don’t want to deprive myself of something I really enjoy, so I will allow myself one or two bites.”
THE DIFFERENCE
“Coming into the gym and doing 20 or 30 minutes, three or four times a week, is a great start,” Silberman says. “It can make a massive difference in your energy level.” It will, however, take you about 30 days to create a new habit, Baum says. “Just do it.”

A PERMANENT FIX Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) has provided an alternative for millions of patients in the past 15 years. “It’s for anyone who wants to lessen their dependence on glasses or contacts,” says Dr. Stephen A. Wexler of TLC Laser Eye Center. “Most patients say it is life-changing.” If you’ve ever needed glasses, you know why. “For most people it is remarkable,” says Dr. Jay Pepose, of Pepose Vision Institute. “They go through a 20-minute surgery and the next day they are out driving without glasses or contacts.” LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT LASIK has been widely embraced, if the numbers are any indication. About 800,000 Americans annually undergo a procedure, the most common being LASIK, to address refractive errors, which prevent light from focusing on the retina, the light-sensing tissue at the back of the eye. LASIK is a two-stage procedure, Pepose explains, in which a protective flap on the cornea is lifted for access to a deeper part of the cornea. “We sculpt that inner layer with a second laser,” he says. “Once we have changed the shape of the cornea, the light is going to be bent differently. Instead of falling in front of the retina or behind the retina, it will fall on the retina, like an image focusing on the film in a camera.”
jccstl.org *Pay no enrollment fee with six-month commitment. Offer ends December 29, 2014.
ENVIABLE RESULTS More than 90 percent of LASIK patients achieve vision measured between 20/20 and 20/40 without corrective lenses, according to the American Association of Ophthalmologists. Vision of 20/20 describes normal acuity at 20 feet from an object. In comparison, a person with 20/100 vision must get 20 feet next to an object that a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet. As for costs, LASIK typically will set you back $2,000 to $3,000 per eye, and most patients do both eyes in one visit. THUMBS UP? Some people would not make good candidates for LASIK. “It probably wouldn’t be a good option for someone who has corneal scarring, a disease of the cornea, or dry eye that isn’t responding to treatment,” says Pepose. In addition, it may not correct larger refractive errors, Wexler says, because “there is a limit to how thin and how flat we can make the cornea.” He adds there are other options for those patients. And for patients ‘of a certain age’ who want to get rid of those annoying reading glasses—uh-uh. LASIK does not treat presbyopia, the loss of close-up vision after age 40.

WAVEFRONT TECHNOLOGY About five years ago, ophthalmologists began using computerized equipment called wavefront technology to map the eye and determine the needed corrections. Corneal reshaping previously was decided by asking the patient to give feedback by looking through test lenses, as in an eyeglass exam. “In the past we averaged the correction across the eye,” Pepose explains. “The wavefront gives us a direct measurement so we are lasing in every spot across the cornea, and it is 25 times more accurate.” And the percentages of patients with higher levels of correction have grown, as well, he says, with some patients able to see better than 20/20. “Each of these steps has brought further and further refinement.”

Too busy? Don't like the gym scene?
“There are four basic things that happen to the skin as it ages,” says Dr. Richard Moore of The Lifestyle Center. “These begin to become evident in our 40s and more evident in our 50s and 60s. Smoking and sun exposure makes them worse.” The first signs, Moore says, are color changes, usually pigment changes due to sun exposure. “Second, dynamic wrinkles form when you make a facial expression and static wrinkles become ingrained after we get into our 40s,” he explains. “The third change is increased laxity due to the loss of collagen and support structures, and fourth is the loss of volume, which gives the face a hollow and saggy appearance.”
HELP IS AT HAND
“There are things that can bring a more organized and youthful effect to your skin. It is just a matter of how much work you want to do,” says Dr. Joseph A. Muccini Jr. of the MidAmerica Skin Health & Vitality Center. “For example, there are a lot of new things happening in skin tightening,” he says. While there is no non-surgical procedure that will equal the dramatic results of a face-lift, “there are many people who might be perfectly happy with a procedure that is non-invasive or minimally invasive.” One alternative uses heat to tighten the skin through ultrasound, Muccini says. “Another skin tightening device uses radio frequency waves to heat the skin,” Moore adds. “The skin is heated very comfortably and stimulated to produce new collagen over the coming months. We can achieve a tightening of the jawline and lift the cheeks.”
RESTORING VOLUME
WE GET IT!
“The other big thing used to rejuvenate the appearance is restoring volume,” Moore says. “We all lose collagen as we age. Some people lose it more rapidly than others, due to genetics or lifestyle choices.” That’s where dermal fillers come in: they replace the tissue lost under the skin. The biggest category of dermal fillers is the hyaluronic acids, a substance naturally present in the body’s connective tissues, Muccini says. Hyaluronic products are injected and restore volume that helps us lift the face. “Most hyaluronic acid fillers last six to 12 months,” says Moore, and “the body breaks it down as it breaks down your own collagen.” He adds there are longerlasting products also.
‘IRONING’ THE WRINKLES
Then there’s Botox, one of several neuromodulators used to treat wrinkles. “These products limit facial expression so that you are less likely to develop those deep creases,” Moore explains. Basically, they paralyze the muscles. “We only put them in very specific areas,” Muccini adds.

LASERS & PEELS
Laser treatments can be used to lighten age spots, as can chemical peels. “Peels remove a superficial layer of skin,” explains Moore, “and can get rid of some of the pigment damage.” Micro-needling devices, such as SkinPen, stimulate the face to rejuvenate itself. “It puts minor wounds in the skin, but they are barely felt because the skin is numbed,” Moore says. “The person appears to have a mild sunburn for about 24 hours, but the body repairs that injury and sends fibroblasts to lay down new collagen.” As for finding the right person and procedure for you: “It is 100-percent an art, so look for someone who has experience with multiple modalities,” says Muccini. “The changes can be impressive and improve a person’s self-esteem and feeling of well-being dramatically.”

top for a moment and think about life’s pursuits. It’s all about perception, right? Whether perceived status, intelligence, or success, we are driven to create for ourselves an image of our ideal selves – to shape the way others see us. To create the best lives possible for ourselves and those closest to us. But what might hold considerable value to one person may not carry the same weight with another. Everything we do in life means something different from everyone else’s vantage point. Instead of placating others to win their favor, indulge yourself with what you actually want – even if you want everything. Allow us to introduce you to the premium lineup from Mungenast Hyundai – the 2014 Equus and all-new 2015 Genesis sedan. Both are here to challenge your perception of pure, unadulterated luxury. Should your vehicle require service, simply call us at Mungenast Hyundai, and we will valet your Equus to and from our dealership and you will
be lent an Equus of ours to drive while yours is being serviced. Between the opulence the Equus affords and the premium, first-class experience we offer for it, your friends will think you’ve spent thousands more – but the fact that you didn’t will simply be our little secret. Genesis is all-new for 2015 and returns with more aggressive styling, advanced technology, the latest passive and active safety features and available HTRAC all-wheel drive. [HOME] A Family Feeling by stephanie zeilenga | photos by suzy gorman
When you walk into the Webster Groves home Christina McHugh Ceranna shares with her husband Craig, son Habi, and dogs Jack and Buddy, you might feel like you’ve just been hugged. That’s because she’s made it her goal to create a warm, lived-in space with plenty of loving little touches. T&S | What initially attracted you to the home? CC | My husband is from Boston, and we love the old, New England-style architecture and cottagey feel of a lot of the homes in Webster. That’s sort of what brought us to the area. I love the age of our home, and I also love its woodwork and that it has the original doors and floors. It has a good soul.
T&S | What’s your favorite feature or room? CC | That would probably have to be the navy blue room, because it’s the heart of the home, and it’s where we spend all our time as a family. And in every room we have a different crucifix, each a family heirloom.
a Family
The Cerann
The dining room, dressed up for the holidays
T&S | Where do you go for decorating inspiration? CC | I really like warm, comforting, lived-in, inviting and homey spaces. I don’t want my house to look like it’s out of a magazine. I want it to feel real and authentic. I use a lot of reused plaids and fabrics, and a lot of that comes out of estate sales or someone’s basement. I work with Temple and Hentz, an interior design firm, and with Rand Rosenthal, a landscape designer. He has beautiful trees, plants and shrubbery and is connected to an awesome warehouse in Rock Hill. He also collects vintage antiques and does big showcases a couple of times a year. T&S | Are there specific places you go to find furnishings or artwork? CC | I love The White Rabbit, which is just around the corner from us in Webster. They have a really great eye for things that are worn in. So a lot of what’s in my home is vintage, mixing the old with the new. I also really like bringing plants and flowers inside—that’s a big inspiration for me. A lot of the wreaths and greenery are from boxwood bushes in my backyard. I also have beautiful hydrangea plants,
pines and winter greens I bring inside. And I do this all year. For example, in the spring, I bring in blooms from our peony bushes. T&S | Your holiday decorations are stunning! Are the holidays a big deal at your house? CC | Yes. I’m an adoptive mom, a foster parent, and I’ve also sort of fostered my teenage cousins. So home, for me, means a lot more than a house. It means being able to give love and nurture, and the holidays are sort of a celebration of all of that, of family and connections. And I believe family doesn’t have to be biological—you can create a sense of family with a stranger or a foster child you’re with for just a short period of time. T&S | Where do you go to pick up decorations? CC | A lot of mine are handmade, vintage ornaments. But, again, live plants play a huge role in our holiday decorations, and most of our decorations are actually greenery and shrubs. T&S | I love the bed with the gold garland and coverlet—do you change out the bedding for the holidays? CC | I did change it for the season. That’s a day bed in our sun room, which is one of my favorite rooms in the house because it’s where we go to read.
T&S | Do you have any particularly meaningful or sentimental holiday decorations? CC | They’re not pictured, but every year since I was 17, I’ve bought an ornament that symbolizes something significant that happened that year. Our stockings are special, too. Mine was embroidered for me when I was a baby, and I’ve also embroidered stockings for all of my family members, even the dogs!

[HOMEWORK: DEAR HOMEWORK,
I know our house could look so much better from the street, but I just don’t know where to begin! ———BASHFUL ABOUT BEGINNING
DEAR BASHFUL ABOUT BEGINNING,
Your home has a number of architectural and landscape challenges that need to be corrected to bring out its full potential. I suggest doing an ‘Extra Credit’ on it, which suggests three possible solutions for resolving some of these issues. Thanks for asking, ———HOMEWORK
SCHEME 1
To begin with, the second-story addition needs to be better integrated with the architecture of the house below it. I suggest creating new, longer second-floor windows with shutters to better match the rest of the house. Next, I would rearrange the columns on the porch to have equal spacing and better alignment with the door and window beyond. New front-facing gable roofs on the first and second floors help give prominence to the center of the façade. Finally, a cupola over the garage portion helps the somewhat awkward second story seem less abrupt by adding an additional vertical accent. As far as the landscape goes, I would simply start over. The current plantings are all the wrong size and in the wrong places. Instead, I would plant two rows of low hedges under the window sills of the wings and finish them off with dogwood trees. This simple scheme underscores the architecture and allows the porch section to take center stage. The façade now has a more balanced and confident feel.

SCHEME 2
To take the design a step further, I would suggest removing the front porch and creating a second-story façade above the front door. I would build a bracketed canopy over the door, which would receive new sidelites. I also would add a small dormer window at the living room to give that area some interest and height.
SCHEME 3
For a final refinement, I suggest a new circle drive, enhanced with painted brick light piers and a clipped yew hedge. This will give the newly enhanced home a more ‘estate’ feel and allow the architecture to extend into the landscape. What was once a bit of a jumble of architecture and landscaping missteps is now a refined and coherent composition.
