[ letter from the editor ] I have now seen what happens when perfectly sane people fantasize about $587 million. I can’t even imagine that kind of money, let alone think about how to spend it. And anyway, isn’t it obscene for a single person to have that much (unless they’re going to do something like reconstruct Haiti with it)? How many cars, houses, trips and diamonds does it take to be happy? Just ask all those past lottery winners, the ones who are now destitute, divorced, depressed and devoid of purpose. Still, according to news reports on Nov. 27, people were buying those Powerball tickets at the rate of 130,000 per minute. If only we could harness some of that energy to cure cancer (or the economy). That is not to say I didn’t put my $6 into the office pool—just in case. But was I wasting my time calculating how to divide $587 million by eight? Hardly. Even as I forked over the money, I felt kind of foolish, thinking I might as well walk up to a lottery official and say, Here’s my donation. Well, the Powerball outcome Nov. 28 confirmed that cynicism. Our Town & Style group matched three of the five numbers and the powerball. I thought we were a pretty lucky bunch—after all, that’s a 66 percent match, one in 12,244.83! Wouldn’t you think four matched numbers out of six would be worth more than $100 in prize money? Apparently not. I guess that’s why they call it a sucker’s game.

face it, often lasts longer. The Fur & Leather Centre, renowned for its wide selection of coats, jackets and accessories, has been wrapping women in luxury for 84 years. “Even in these laidback times when every day is casual Friday, there is nothing more glamorous than fur,” says manager Ann Hurth. “It exudes a built-in ‘wow’ factor that makes it the perfect holiday gift.” The Fur Centre makes holiday gift-giving more exciting than ever, featuring the latest trends from New York, Milan and Paris. “By using fur like just another fabric, contemporary designers are moving away from that Nanook of the North look and creating styles that are relaxed, modern and polished,” Hurth says. “It’s minimal fuss with maximum impact.” Today’s furs are sophisticated and versatile, not something you take out of mothballs once or twice a year for a special event. “These are not your grandma’s heavy brown coats—they’re meant to be enjoyed often, taking you from the kids’ soccer games to the best restaurant in town with equal ease.” Fur is long-lasting, and when you’re ready for an update, the store’s master furriers can restyle your coat or jacket, Hurth adds. “We can increase length and fullness, or even turn a coat into a sporty hoodie,” she says. “We also can ‘recycle’ an older fur into a knit or combine it with other fabrics, even denim.” And don’t fret if you’re on a budget. “True, we carry some very pricy items, but we also have gifts and accessories in every price range.” Styles change, but reputation endures. The Fur Centre has long been known for its commitment to community service. “St. Louis has been good to us, so we like to give back any way we can,” Hurth says. This season, the store is partnering with Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri to help grant the wish of 5-year-old Violet VerPlank, a child who recently underwent surgery to remove a life-threatening brain tumor. Thanks to The Fur Centre, Violet and her family are headed to Branson, Mo., to see Growing Up Brady, a Brady Bunch tribute show. Violet will get to meet her favorite Brady, Greg, portrayed by actor Barry Williams. “We’ve explained that Greg is considerably older now than he was on the TV series, and she’s cool with that,” Hurth says with a smile. In addition to introducing Violet to her hero, the store will contribute a percentage of all proceeds from December sales to Make-A-Wish. “We want everyone to have a happy holiday, especially the kids and families served by this wonderful organization,” she says. “So if you do some of your shopping with us, you’ll help us achieve that goal. After all, the only thing more dazzling than a gift from The Fur Centre is the smile on a child’s face when her wish comes true.”

What’s the most memorable holiday meal you ever had?

“widow’s peak ”

The holidays are all about family, food and wine. I think I owe my enthusiasm for the season to my grandmother, who not only knows how to throw an amazing party, but has a love of good food and wine that knows no equal. No single meal stands out in my mind, just a lot of laughter, and traditional classics like creamed pearl onions, sweet potatoes with marshmallow, and pumpkin pie with vanilla ice cream. The festivities always start in the kitchen— and they always start with a bottle of wine.

phraseology [ freyz • ŏ • lō • gy ]

What do Eddie Munster, Jake Gyllenhaal, The Joker, Kourtney Kardashian and Julianna Margulies have in common? They all have a widow’s peak, a distinctive, v-shaped point in the middle of the hairline, above the forehead. The trait, which tends to limit one’s hairstyling options, has always been steeped in superstition. Some people believe that women who bear it are destined to outlive their husbands; others contend that men who possess it exhibit exceptional sexual prowess (leave it to a man to put a self-confident spin on a bad hair day). But how did it come to be called a widow’s peak? The term first cropped up in English folklore in the 1830s. As far as etymologists can tell, it’s a reference to a peaked headdress or cap, known as a mourning hood, worn by widows in the 1500s.

talk [towns] by bill beggs jr.

Back in the day, if the garbage man didn’t take your old TV set, paint cans, tires, grass clippings—not to mention cans, bottles and old periodicals—you just took the debris and unwanted items to the ‘dump.’ In some places, all that stuff was incinerated. Today, we have landfills, not dumps—and the EPA. Fewer lakes die, and it’s been a while since a river caught on fire anywhere. Trash hauling is now ‘waste management,’ and for good reason. Landfills are engineered for maximum biodegradability, and most everything is recyclable. The latest wrinkle in this continuing trend is waste-collection vehicles (not ‘garbage trucks’) powered by compressed natural gas. Republic Services, which collects trash in Ballwin, Ellisville and elsewhere, states that the $25 million it is investing to replace 72 trucks in the metro area will a) reduce greenhouse gases by nearly 25 percent, and b) make for visits that are 90 percent quieter. Good news for the environment (bad news for folks who used the garbage truck’s arrival as an alarm clock). This is not a ‘man bites dog’ story. Chesterfield, as has Manchester recently, is mulling over removing breed-specific language from its ordinance, which would hearten owners of dogs that have pit bull terrier in the mix. County animal control workers and area police departments put the onus on a dog owner, not any particular breeds, and take calls about dangerous dogs on a case-by-case basis. The pit bull is the ‘bad’ canine of the moment—in the 1950s and ’60s, many feared German shepherds and Doberman pinschers because they were trained during World War II to be fierce. At any rate, a revamped ordinance would welcome any breed to Eberlein Dog Park, as is the case in nearly every

of the

other dog park countywide. Point is, even ‘bad’ golden retrievers (not yours, of course) need to romp around. So: love us, love our dogs. A half-dozen municipalities throughout St. Louis County, including Clayton, have passed ordinances officially broadening the rights of same-sex couples. This makes it illegal to deny people housing and access to public spaces, among other things, based on gender identity or sexual orientation. But, at this writing, a law was under consideration by the County Council that would provide similar protections countywide. This remains a hot button throughout our dear red state of Missouri, where members of a Springfield church held a prayer rally recently against that city’s passage of a nondiscrimination bill. Developments here are being watched closely: The Kansas City Star picked up a local report on them. Three metro areas in the state—Columbia, St. Louis and Jackson County (Kansas City)— now have similar nondiscrimination statutes. Social change is inexorable, if slow; the Civil Rights Movement wasn’t a juggernaut, either. Whatever happens in the annually heralded Turkey Day gridiron contest between Kirkwood and Webster Groves high schools, it gets trumped by the actual state championship. This year, although the Webster Groves Statesmen defeated the Kirkwood Pioneers to retain the Frisco Bell, so what? The teams competing were the junior varsity squads, as had been the case last year, when Webster went to state and lost at the Edward Jones Dome. This year, the Pioneers had something remarkable to celebrate: They won their first state championship, ever, defeating Fort Osage on Black Friday

at the Dome. Kirkwood was about as giddy with its victory celebration as were Redbirds fans following the World Series championship in 2011. On Cyber Monday, their first day back to school after Thanksgiving break, students paraded their trophy through the hallways of KHS.

the antebellum fairfax house

It remains to be seen whether Jumpin’ Jupiter can continue its burlesque shows in the space at Sutton and Manchester—or will fall flat, as have previous occupants, most recently Jive & Wail. At this writing, a company representative was to appear before Maplewood officials in response to allegations the club is in arrears for sales taxes. The club has achieved plenty of notoriety in its year and a half run: unpaid rent, unpaid entertainers, scantily clad performers on the sidewalk urging passersby to come in and gawk a spell rather than simply rubberneck. To its credit, the club has managed to escape eviction at the 11th hour several times, and previous entertainment provider Von Ella Productions acknowledges payment of ‘most’ of what’s owed. As they say, any publicity is good publicity. So, there you have it. The antebellum Fairfax House, c. 1841, has been moved more times than some military families. A website dedicated to the historic house praises the Greek Revival home as one of the area’s most significant. On the National Register of Historic Places, it was built by a family named Marshall, who at the time owned some 900 acres of today’s most desirable real estate, from Brentwood and Ladue to Webster

Groves and Glendale. To the credit of U-Gas, which built the gas station and C-store now on the northeast corner of the McKnight-Manchester intersection, the house is comfortably situated some distance away from the modern enterprise. It is surrounded by an expanse of green space, some of it recently planted grass…although it could have benefited from being set back further from McKnight. Indeed, Fairfax House has managed to retain some of its dignity. It could have met an ignominious end. Today it is on level ground, whereas on its former site it seemed to tilt downhill. But to employ a phrase, ‘There is something wrong with this picture.’ The back of the house hasn’t been painted in years. The front and two sides look to have acquired a nice blue not too long ago, while the hind end is dirty and peeling, with an ugly back door in plain sight for all eyes to see. A challenge to U-Gas and/or the folks who run Rock Hill: Somebody needs to pony up for a nice new door and some scraping and painting! How about community volunteers, and maybe a donation of paint and materials by a local hardware store? The Lou consists of 28 wards, each dotted with local businesses, from restaurants and

barbershops to antiques shops and theaters. Every year in each ward, a business is honored as Neighborhood Business of the Year. We’d like to give props to one of them this issue (with more likely to come in the future). Café Mochi, 2012’s winner in Ward 15, is worthy of note for renovating a century-old building on the corner of Grand Boulevard and Humphrey Street, and giving it new life as a popular sushi and Vietnamese restaurant— wait for it—with a hair salon above. Despite stiff competition from other restaurants in the South Grand region, owner Victor Pham has created a little oasis in the urban landscape, with a lovely, large, enclosed patio out front, a bright, new interior and a stately exterior remake. While not the chef (that would be his brother), Pham is a restaurateur and stylist (he cuts and styles hair in Victor Salon, just above the restaurant patio). When prodded about his new award, he retrieved a plaque from a shelf near the sushi bar, where it has lain since October among some plates and a stack of local magazines. It’s an attractive black enamel creation featuring a 3-D replica of the Gateway Arch. In warmer months, the patio is crowded daily (except Mondays) until long after dark, when the widened and newly landscaped sidewalks (completed in 2010) begin teeming with nightlife. presented, but diners who prefer fully cooked food may also enjoy tempura, plus many other pan-Asian dishes. Not surprisingly, his Vietnamese offerings are especially tantalizing. Literally and figuratively, U. City aims to clean up the streets. Sweeping on private streets as well as public thoroughfares is under consideration. Also—knuckleheads, beware—city officials are discussing the possibility of a crime task force, which Mayor Shelley Welsch strongly supports. Police say that this year’s uptick in violent crime has been the result of crook-on-crook activity. In the meanwhile, other types of crime have decreased dramatically, authorities say. Formally inviting the community at large to participate in the dialogue would help increase awareness and cooperation among officers and residents, Welsch says. Under consideration are several initiatives, among them: 1. Crime prevention and awareness forums by patrol zones or wards; 2. Funding for a block unit community organizer; 3. Funding for more surveillance cameras in the Delmar Loop.

A seventh Llywelyn’s location originally was slated to open next January in Wildwood, but now it looks more like February, staffers say. City officials recently gave a thumbs-up to the liquor license for the popular pub’s newest location. According to a whimsical ad slogan, Llywelyn’s is ‘Celtic for good times.’ And that can even happen on the road via an official designated driver: A trolley-styled vehicle takes fans to games downtown from the Webster Groves location, and also can be spied making the rounds for special events in Webster. The first location, in the Central West End, focused on Welsh fare, but as the company has expanded, so has the menu. Irish, Scottish and other items are available.

of the highest honors physician-scientists can attain. Yokoyama is known internationally for his research on the immune system; Zorumski’s work focuses on communication between neurons in the brain.

[ Groundbreaking Artist ] Picasso gets most of the attention, but French painter and sculptor Georges Braque was the co-founder of Cubism. Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life, 1928-1945, will be on view Jan. 25 through April 21 at Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University. The exhibition, the first major U.S. museum show dedicated to Braque in 16 years, brings together more than 40 paintings arranged in multiple groupings of related works. It includes the artist’s Rosenberg Quartet, four canvases reunited for the first time in 80 years.

Question: Last month my 13 year old daughter had her annual physical and her doctor asked if I wanted to vaccinate her against HPV. I’ve heard mixed reviews. What are the benefits and risks of Gardasil®?

Answer:

An estimated 75 to 80% of all males and females in the U.S. will be affected by human papillomavirus (HPV) in their lifetime. There are more than 100 types of HPV, but HPV 16 and 18 cause 70% of cervical cancers, and HPV 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts. These are the four types of HPV targeted by the Gardasil® vaccine. Most HPV infections will clear on their own. Some, however, will not. These persistent infections can lead to multiple doctor visits, medical procedures and surgeries for pre-cancer (dysplasia), or even cancer of the cervix, as well as treatment of genital warts. Gardasil® was approved by the FDA in June 2006, and offers protection against HPV 16, 18, 6 and 11. This three-part vaccination series can prevent almost 100% of these conditions.

To maximize the vaccine’s efficacy, all boys and girls should be vaccinated prior to the onset of sexual activity, and before potential exposure to HPV. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology all endorse vaccination of boys and girls starting at age 11 or 12, but the vaccines can be started as early as age 9. For those young adults who are older than this and have not completed the vaccine series, it is still recommended for females up to age 26 and males up to age 21. Gardasil®, like any other vaccine, is monitored closely for adverse side effects through ongoing assessment by both governmental organizations and independent researchers. Gardasil® has not been conclusively implicated with any serious health events. The vast majority of adverse events reported to date have been similar to other injected vaccines and include pain, bruising at the injection site, nausea, dizziness and fainting. If you’d like more information, visit cdc.gov/vaccinesafety. In summary, Gardasil® has been well studied and continues to be closely monitored. The benefits far outweigh any possible risks.

by rebecca koenig About the club| Seeking intellectual stimulation and a brief break from their young children, a handful of members of the Woman’s Club of Washington University founded an evening book club in 1962. Jackie Lipsitz isn’t an original member; she joined the group some 20 years ago. “Many of us have been friends since our children were in nursery school,” she says, “and our children are old now.” The group meets once a month for dessert and discussion at a member’s home except during the summer and December. All books for the next year are chosen in advance by vote, and according to Lipsitz, the group tries to read at least one classic a year.

About the book| Pearl Buck’s Pulitzer Prizewinning novel The Good Earth follows Wang Lung, a Chinese peasant, as he and his family struggle to hold onto their land and navigate the turbulent social changes of the early 20th century.

[ opinions ]

>> It was a beautifully written book that really transported me to China in the early 20th century. The title was spot on: so much description of the power of the land and what it meant to Wang Lung and his family. - Marcia Bernstein >> It was good to reacquaint with The Good Earth, which I had read many years ago, and to realize how what is seen in a book varies at different periods of one’s life. - Nancy Thompson >> It’s a universal story, beautifully and skillfully written. Some authors get carried away with unnecessary descriptions, but Pearl Buck wrote only what was essential. I read it slowly so I could savor her writing. - Sylvia Silver >>The structure of the language Buck used was unique, different from modern English. It had the effect of throwing the reader into the Chinese culture. One could easily imagine being Chinese, even as a non-Chinese speaker. - Gloria Lubowitz

[Fall Sports Wrap Up] by bill hester

The fall of 2012 featured a pair of volleyball championship teams, a sweep of the state team tennis titles and an amazing golf team that repeated both individual and team titles. And it was a season of thrills, as well, for the fall’s most high-profile sport: football.

[ football ]

[ cross-country ]

Kirkwood and John Burroughs made it back to the Edward Jones Dome for state championship games, and the Pioneers (including our own Jack Russell, son of proud T&S sales executive Paula Russell) came away with the first state title in school history with a 31-7 win over Fort Osage in the Class 5 championship. Quarterback Jordan Bishop threw for three touchdowns and the Pioneer defense limited Fort Osage to less than 200 yards of offense, including only 30 yards on 27 attempts. “Our program has been long overdue,” says Kirkwood coach Matt Irvin. “There have been a lot of great teams before us, great coaches and a lot of great players. It just didn’t happen. But this group came together three years ago and has had great leadership, effort and coachability, all things champions have. That allowed us a chance to be the first team in the school’s history to win a state championship in football.” Kirkwood also swept the top Suburban South Conference awards. Bishop was named offensive player of the year, while his brother, linebacker Jarrod Bishop, was named defensive player of the year. Irvin was coach of the year. John Burroughs made it to the state championship game for the third year in a row but the third time was not a charm. The Bombers fell to Maryville 35-22 in the Class 3 title game despite a record-setting performance by Zeke Elliott, who set a championship record with 419 all-purpose yards.

St. Louis University High was the area’s only team champion. The Junior Bills won the Class 4 boys title in dramatic fashion. SLUH finished with 98 points. “It was a complete team victory,” says SLUH coach Joe Porter. “We didn’t have a runner who was trying to win the individual title. Instead, we needed all seven runners to have a good day and that is what they did. We had six runners in the top 41.” Matt Nicholson (eighth) and Tom Rubio (23rd) led the way for the Junior Bills with all-state performances.

The Bombers were dominant throughout their 13-1 season, outscoring their opponents 552-137. CBC won a highly competitive Metro Catholic Conference, finishing 4-0. The Cadets were undefeated heading into the Class 6 quarterfinals but were upset by De Smet Jesuit (which lost to eventual Class 6 champion Blue Springs in the semifinals). Lafayette had the area’s most-dominant defense with seven shutouts. The Lancers won the Suburban West Conference with a perfect 7-0 record, and like De Smet Jesuit, were within a game of making it to the Dome. But the Lancers had their dream of an undefeated state championship denied by Francis Howell, 17-6 in Class 6. Running back Deonte Robinson was picked as offensive player of the year and Boyd Manne was coach of the year. Parkway South linebacker Jordan Noyes was defensive player of the year. Ladue was another area league champion. The Rams won all five games in winning the Suburban East Conference. Ladue’s Brent Morrow was named lineman of the year in the league, while Mike Tarpey was selected coach of the year. Clayton’s David Neville was defensive player of the year. Running backs Elliott of John Burroughs and Markel Smith of Vianney had particularly impressive seasons individually. Smith set six Griffin school records and rushed for more than 400 yards in two different games. “He rushed for 2,520 yards this season and the previous career record was 3,204 yards,” says Vianney coach Mike Diffley. “Through it all he has remained humble and continues to be a team-first guy.” Elliott led the entire St. Louis area with 50 touchdowns, including three in the championship game. The Ohio State recruit averaged more than 10 yards per carry, finishing the year with 2,153 yards on the ground on 205 carries. 14 |

Marquette’s Adam Roderique and De Smet Jesuit’s Austin Del Rosso also had top 10 finishes in Class 4, finishing sixth and ninth respectively. Marquette was sixth as a team and Parkway West was eighth. MICDS’ Amos Bartelsmeyer was the area’s only boy’s individual champion. Bartelsmeyer won the Class 3 race as the Rams finished fourth overall as a team. “We knew if Amos was in touch with the leaders as they came to the finish line that he has an excellent kick,” says MICDS coach Chris Rappleye. “When he came into the last turn on the heels of the first place runner, those expectations were fulfilled. He passed the first place runner with 250 meters left in the race and then put another 12 seconds between second place and himself with one of the strongest final 200 meters of the day.” Six area girls schools finished in the top 10. Villa Duchesne finished fourth in Class 3. MICDS was sixth in Class 3 and Whitfield was 10th in Class 2. Lafayette (sixth), Nerinx Hall (seventh) and Marquette (eighth) were top finishers in Class 4.

[ softball ] No Town & Style-area teams competed in the Final Four in Springfield this fall, but there were plenty of team and individual highlights. Webster Groves had an outstanding season. It won all six games in the Suburban South and was 23-2 overall. Senior outfield Emma Buckles was named co-conference player of the year with Rockwood Summit senior Ellie Cooper. Suburban East Conference player of the year Jessica Mormol helped Ladue to a perfect 5-0 record in the conference. Rams’ coach Jennifer Tuttle was also named coach of the year in the conference. St. Joseph’s Academy won the MWAA white division with a 4-0 mark, while Lafayette was 6-1 in the Suburban West.

[ field hockey ] Cor Jesu and Nerinx Hall were the top teams in the area through the regular season and eventually matched up for the state championship. Cor Jesu won 3-2; the 24-1 Chargers were led by MWAA player of the year Elizabeth Horak. Nerinx also had an outstanding season, finishing 22-4 overall. Three area teams, Villa Duchesne, MICDS and John Burroughs, were co-champions in the Metro League. All had good overall seasons as they combined for a 49-19 record. Villa’s Grace Leeker was co-player of the year in the conference.Marquette won the Suburban Conference, finishing 9-0. The Mustangs were led by conference goalie of the year, Angelina Kelly. Lafayette’s Kate Barber was named the player of the year.

Parkway Central finished second as a team to Rockhurst in the state meet at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters. Rockhurst won with 225 points. Parkway Central was second with 203.5. John Burroughs (fourth), MICDS (eighth) and Marquette (ninth) also had top-10 team finishes. Parkway Central senior Nick Orf capped off a great career with three first-place finishes and a second-place finish. Orf won the individual 200-IM and combined with Riley Brown, Brandon Weissman and Zach Rogers to win both the 200-yard medal JBS swim team relay and 400-yard freestyle medley. John Burroughs also had relay champions as Daniel Diemer, Tyler Waterman, Robert Beckles and Kevin Steinhouse won the 200-yard freestyle medley.

Lafayette capped off a perfect season with a Class 4 championship. The Lancers, who also won the state title in 2011, defeated Lee’s Summit West 26-24, 25-19 in the title game in Cape Girardeau, recording their 40th victory of the season. Outside hitter Lily Johnson, setter Maggie Scott, middle hitter Stephanie Campbell, opposite Melanie Crow and middle blocker Maddie Jones were all named to the first team all-Suburban West Conference team. “I think perfect is a great word to describe this season,” says Lafayette coach Zach Young said. “This is the first team in Missouri volleyball history to go 40-0. It’s believed to be the first team to go undefeated without losing a set in state history. “It’s been an amazing journey. We realize this is not a group that comes along every year, and we’ve really enjoyed every moment this year.” Westminster Christian Lafayette state champs Academy also came back from Cape Girardeau with a first-place trophy as the Wildcats won the Class 3 championship. They defeated Pleasant Hill 25-16, 25-22 in the finals. “The team made great adjustments through the end of the season serving aggressive and playing big at the net,” Westminster coach Heather Kea said. “We were a tall team and sometimes tall girls have to be reminded that with big shoulders comes big responsibility. Districts and sectionals were challenges, and state was pure enjoyment. We were able to ride the wave of excitement through the weekend and the championship.” Westminster finished 29-6-1 overall and won the Metro Championship. St. Joseph’s Academy had another outstanding season. The Angels won the tough MWAA White Conferece, going 5-0, and won 30 matches overall. Kirkwood and Ladue were also undefeated league champions, winning the Suburban South and Suburban East Conferences, respectively. Both teams finished with 20 wins overall.

[ tennis ] St. Louis teams swept both team championships in the state meet at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. St. Joseph’s Academy captured the Class 2 title, beating its longtime rival Rock Bridge in the finals 5-1. It was a record 15th state title for the Angels. “With that kind of history to live up to, we start each season with the aim of adding another banner to St. Joe’s gymnasium,” says Angels coach Doug Smith. “It’s a lofty goal and not always possible to attain. But it’s good to set the bar high and certainly satisfying to reach it. Dethroning last year’s champion, Rock Bridge, in this year’s state final was a special icing on the cake.” Visitation won its third consecutive Class 1 championship. The Vivettes defeated Barstow 5-1 in the title match. “I was so thrilled that all four seniors (Jocelyn Koester, Briana Menolascino, Jana Haikal and Marielle Newell) had singles wins in the final,” Visitation coach Annie Menees said. “It was a storybook ending for these girls. They have been the heart and soul of our team for four years now and they absolutely deserved the ending they got.” The Vivettes also had the individual doubles champion as Koester and Menolascino closed out their high school careers with a title. They defeated Clayton’s Connor Cassity and Caroline Greenberg in the finals. Clayton also had a second place finish in singles as Carly Cassity fell in three sets to Alena Frye of Barstow in the championship match. Kirkwood freshman Bridget Mayfield, who made an immediate impact, was a second-place finish in Class 2 singles. Ladue senior Lindsey Whitehead was third. It was an all-Rock Bridge final in Class 2 doubles. St. Joseph’s Taylor Revling and Ellie Bisig won the third place match over Abby Carpenter and Kelly Carpenter of Lafayette.

[ golf ]

Westminster’s Brooke Cusamano

It was a happy case of deja vu for both the Westminster Christian team and standout senior Brooke Cusumano. The Wildcats repeated their Class 1 championship, and Cusumano defended her individual title. “It was great to win back to back for these girls,” says Westminster coach Steve Bradley. “They had a dream of doing just that, and they went to work. Alone, we couldn’t have done it again. Together, we were able to surprise even ourselves.” Jordan Wolf finished second overall as the Wildcats won in dominating fashion. Westminster finished with a score of 669. That was 52 strokes ahead of Villa Duchense, which finished second. Three other area golfers finished in the top 10 in Class 1. MICDS’s Abigail Schroeder was fifth, John Burroughs’ Logan Otter was sixth, and Villa Duchesne’s Morgan Gast was ninth. Lafayette finished second to Rock Bridge in Class 2. The Lancers were led by Briana Cullimore, who finished third individually. Parkway West’s Emily Goldenstein was fourth. St. Joseph’s Academy was fifth as a team, while Ursuline was seventh.

[ soccer ] It was an all-area battle for the state title in Class 3 as CBC defeated Chaminade 2-0 to capture its eighth team championship. “We won it in grand fashion, meaning we took on all comers and survived everyone’s best shot,” says CBC coach Terry Michler. The Cadets earned two goals in the final eight minutes to defeat Vianney 3-2 in the quarterfinals. They followed with a 1-0 win over CBC state champs hometown powerhouse PHOTO BY ROB STAGGENBORG Rockhurst in the semifinals and then took down the No. 1 ranked team in the state, Chaminade, in the championship game 2-0. “It was No. 1 versus No. 2 for all the marbles,” Michler says. “We got two first-half goals and hunkered down in the second half and defended our goal with patience and organization.” CBC, which finished second to Chaminade in the Metro Catholic Conference, finished with a 25-5-1 overall record while Chaminade was 25-3-2. All five teams in the MCC finished with above .500 records. Marquette and Parkway Central also had outstanding seasons which included conference championships. Marquette won all eight games in the Suburban West and was 19-3-0 overall while Parkway Central won the Suburban South with a 7-1 record and was 21-7-1 overall. Ladue was also a conference champion, winning the Suburban East Conference.

Although you may be preoccupied with the holidays, now is a perfect time to start some planning for a new, improved you in the upcoming year. If you intend to exercise more, start investigating trainers and gyms now. And if you have money left in your flexible spending account, get screened for that Lasik procedure now, as soon as possible. Local experts weigh in on how to spend your time—and dime!—on self-improvement.

[ how to choose a personal trainer or gym ] Finding the right personal trainer or gym is like dating: You have to want to spend quality time with them. To find the perfect fit, research—but don’t over-analyze. Eric Emig, principal, Evolution Fitness Look for someone who has at least a bachelor of science degree in exercise physiology and certification from at least two nationally recognized fitness organizations. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Council of Exercise (ACE) and the National Council of Sports Fitness are reputable organizations, but there are others. Ask for proof of certification and professional liability insurance. Request referrals. A good trainer should be able to give you 10 referrals on the spot. Seek someone with at least five years of experience. Expect your medical history to be taken and a fitness assessment. If this does not occur, it’s a red flag. Watch out for supplement pushers — trainers who want you to buy their supplement, muscle builder or protein shake. Avoid the ‘no-pain, no-gain’ trainer. Training should be a slow, gradual process as the body becomes acclimated to increased activity. Be wary of someone who wants you to sign a long-term contract.

James Pedersen, director of fitness and member services, Jewish Community Center A lot of people shop ‘backwards.’ They shop by price or look at facilities to see if they match their interests. Do some soul-searching first: Identify your interests and goals and the amenities you need. Then shop. Convenience is important. Find a gym close to where you live, work or shop. Be open-minded to other activities offered there that might spark your interest, like yoga. Don’t be key-holed by one interest. Determine how much time you are willing to invest. Every gym has its own feel and environment, but sometimes you have to ‘jump into the pool’ to find out the temperature. Likewise, don’t talk yourself out of a facility because you are initially uncomfortable. Could you become comfortable there? I have a lot of people who will visit every gym in the area, collect all the information and end up with paralysis by analysis. They get all the information, but don’t do anything with it. Most of the challenges to exercise are created in our head.

[ FSAs ] Use your flexible spending account now to look and feel better next year. Dr. Stephen Wexler, Eye Care Associates of St. Louis My busiest month for Lasik surgery is always January because of flexible spending accounts. FSAs allow employees of companies with the benefits-package perk to save and use pre-tax dollars for qualified, out-ofpocket medical expenses. Qualified vision-care expenses include eye exams, glasses, contact lenses, and surgery such as Lasik or photorefractive keratectomy to correct defective vision. FSAs are a good vehicle for paying for your refractive eye surgery, like Lasik, with tax-free income. But there’s a catch: if you don’t use the money by the end of the plan year, you will lose it. Any balance left in your account at the end of the year is forfeited to your employer. Some companies give their employees until March 15 of the following year to spend leftover funds. But you still need to act fast and get screened now. It’s so disappointing when someone who has saved for Lasik in their FSA comes in only to find out they are not a candidate for the procedure. So get screened by an experienced Lasik surgeon before you start putting money away.

4 West Drive | Suite 170 Chesterfield 63017 ChesterfieldOrtho.com Brent Dee Bankhead, DDS, MS Darren Rodabough, DDS, MS

Dr. Andy Kates, associate professor of medicine, W.U. School of Medicine Up to 90 percent of the risk factors for a heart attack are preventable. Diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, inactivity and obesity—these are all modifiable risk factors. Medicine is one way to treat them, but so is lifestyle change. Strive for five days of moderately intense exercise per week, with each workout lasting 30 minutes. Get your heart rate up. Exercise to where you become slightly winded. Eat a heart-healthy diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. A Mediterraneaninspired diet that includes seafood, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and olive oil as a fat source seems to provide benefit. Reduce your salt intake and watch your calories. While taking a multivitamin may be good for you, they don’t prevent cardiovascular events. A randomized study of 14,000 male physicians, 50 years or older, taking a daily multivitamin found no heart benefit. Likewise, the value of supplements, including fish oil, is unclear. Some people take supplements but forgo diet and exercise. Be screened for cardiovascular risk factors. Take steps to address them. If you need medication for high cholesterol, statins are the drug of choice. Know your blood pressure, your ideal body weight and cholesterol levels.

Dr. Jeff Ciarmita, chief of cardiology, Mercy Heart and Vascular-St. Louis Though effective in restoring blood flow during and following a heart attack, traditional methods of cardiac catheterization pose their own set of risks. They can actually damage heart muscle. A new type of balloon drug-delivering catheter addresses that concern. It can save more heart muscle, dissolve clots better and reduce complications associated with systemic medication. In a cardiac catheterization, a long thin hollow tube called a catheter is placed in a blood vessel in the patient’s arm or groin, and snaked to the heart. If a blockage is noted, a tiny balloon is inserted, inflated and used to open the artery. With traditional cardiac catheterization, different types of blood thinners are then delivered intravenously to help re-establish coronary blood flow. Therein lies the problem. They increase the possibility of dangerous side effects to the entire body. Because the balloon on the new catheter is porous, it allows us to deliver a high concentration of clot-busting medication directly to the occluded site. This localized therapy increases the efficacy of medications and can re-establish coronary blood flow quicker. Our goal is to significantly improve outcome, decrease extent of damage from a heart attack and prevent future events.

[ where in the world is mary jo? ]

This crowded city of 15 million is caught between two worlds, with the magnificent buildings of the British Raj superimposed on the poverty of so many of its citizens. This extreme poverty inspired Mother Teresa to found her order here in 1953. She worked tirelessly on behalf of the disadvantaged until her death in 1997 at the age of 87. One of the most impressive buildings to grace this city is the Monument to Queen Victoria, finished in 1921. Made of the same marble as the Taj Mahal, it is referred to locally as the Taj of the Raj. Fearing the Japanese would bomb it during WW II, city fathers painted it black. It has since been restored to its former glory.

Introducing Incognito Hidden Braces

Some cosmetic surgeries are best to consider during cold weather months Dr. Mike Nayak, Nayak Plastic Surgery Winter is an ideal time to have a face-lift. Higher necklines and scarves can help hide the bruising on the neck and jawline that occurs during recovery. It generally takes about two weeks for serious bruising to go down. People are physically ready for a face-lift when their jawline and neckline become loose. They must, however, also be emotionally ready. Judging emotional readiness requires an in-person evaluation with an experienced facelift surgeon and an open discussion of the pluses and minuses of surgery. Preoperative communication of goals and expected results is the best way to ease postoperative adjustment, which includes healing and its associated bruising. A face-lift is tailored to each patient, taking into consideration individual tissue type, face shape, health and goals. Patients with jowls and/or loose necklines, in particular, give the procedure high satisfaction grades. The average patient has a touch-up at the five-to-10-year mark. Dr. Richard Moore, medical director, The Lifestyle Center Our prime time for liposuction is January through June, and the Tickle Lipo is our newest body-sculpting procedure. It permanently removes fat from problem areas, but it is not a weight-loss technique. Like other liposuction procedures, it uses a hollow tube called a cannula that is inserted into the targeted zone to remove fat. Unlike other liposuction procedures, the Tickle Lipo cannula rotates and vibrates, causing fat to break up more easily. The vibration also helps block pain, and the resulting sensation is pleasant, like a tickle. Because it is less traumatic than traditional liposuction, recovery is quicker and easier. Treated skin is also smoother. It requires one session per treatment area. Venus Freeze is another body-contouring technique and skintightening procedure. It combines magnetic and radio frequency energies to create heat and a thermal reaction in the targeted tissue. As the temperature rises, skin lifts and tightens. Most people find the treatments relaxing, like a hot stone massage. There’s no downtime, but multiple treatments are necessary.

[Le Metier de Beaute home peels/masks photo by bill barrett

It is now easier to look like you just walked out of a treatment room at Canyon Ranch. The upscale line Le Metier de Beaute last week launched an at-home facial peel and mask duo that will leave your face as soft as a baby’s, well, skin. In a recent trial run at Neiman Marcus, where the line is exclusively sold in St. Louis, I sampled the treatment, and can attest: there is nothing quite like that fresh-skin feeling. Anyone who’s had a face peel will tell you it feels like you’ve grown new skin, and in a way you have. The peel removes the very top layer, the one that has weathered the assaults of sun, wind, cosmetics and more. Just underneath, waiting to be revealed, is a brighter, softer, glowing complexion. And you can tell the difference. Not many skincare lines offer at-home peels

(Natura Bisse is the only one I know of), but now, instead of scheduling an hour facial at the salon, you can perform the treatments at home in your PJs. And while the products are not inexpensive, the ominously dubbed CHEM60 ProPeel & GLOW 10ai Mask Set still offers a savings over professionally administered treatments. The $265 set is estimated to give you five to nine peels. The peel is a blend of salicylic and glycolic acids, which you leave on for one to five minutes. Once you remove that with a splash of water or a washcloth, you’re ready for the mask, which you can leave on for five to 15 minutes, then peel off. It’s amazing how fresh and glowing my face felt afterward, and of course, once you get a whiff of what great skin is like, you’re hooked.

parent trap Wake Up to Life ]

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, amount of focus on ‘fitting in,’ and that is an unhealthy message. supporters interviewed several kids and teens whose homes had been demolished by the storm, and they had some interesting things to say. One girl spoke through tears about returning home and finding her cat, which she had had to leave during the mandatory evacuation. Her biggest concern hadn’t been her iPod or dolls; it was her beloved kitten. A teen boy talked about how losing most of his material possessions wasn’t as big a deal as he would have thought a week before. What he was grateful for after the tragedy was that his loved ones were all safe and they were going to see this through together. A middle school-aged girl talked about being without cell phone and Internet service. She shared that it didn’t seem as important as it had been pre-storm, and she was really enjoying playing outdoors more. Often it takes a death, a loss, a trauma or a tragedy to rouse us from our sleepwalking through life to remember what’s really important. It can make us ‘wake up’ to life. Another area where we often need to wake up regards relationships—and how we talk to kids about them. There is an inordinate

Kids internalize fitting in as ‘being like everyone else’—in dress, language and behaviors. Their parents, teachers and culture has conditioned them to strive to be accepted, to be popular, to have a sense of belonging. I say, Why would you want to belong to anybody? Something like Hurricane Sandy, quicker than anything else perhaps, reminds us of the fragility of life and of how grateful we should be to be part of it. So let’s not teach our children to be dominated by a herd mentality, but rather to be the wonderful individuals they were intended to be. The need to belong and fit in drives kids to give up who they are. They become like puppets on a string: When others like the way they look and invite them into the group, they feel great about themselves. When they are criticized by their peer group, they become miserable. We can teach them better. We don’t want their sense of self to go up and down, dependent on others. Wake up! And wake your children up as well. Focus your children on accepting and loving themselves for who they are. Encourage them to be of service to others, to make a difference. That’s what will bring them happiness—and don’t wait for a hurricane to do it.

Trattoria Marcella’s little sister has finally arrived. Mia Sorella opened in late September just a few blocks west of Clayton and Woods Mill roads. This second locale of the highly popular— and reliably good—restaurant serves creative Italian fare like Roman gnocchi and wings Siciliano, as well as pizzas and panini. It’s casual Italian, but far from prosaic. Chef-owner Steve Komorek has built his reputation on intense, flavor-filled dishes, and he brings that quality to the food here. In the slow food tradition (he trained in a slow food program in Italy), Komorek builds layers of taste by using fine ingredients and simply letting their natural flavors shine. For example, the simplest of starters, Palpette al Forno, baked meatballs ($7.50) are light as air and

flavored simply with fennel and a touch of red pepper. Similarly, they are served in a thin sauce of cooked-down San Marzano tomatoes—basic but so delicious. Same goes for the Homemade Fennel Sausage Pizza ($13). The crust was crisp and lightly charred on the underside, thanks to flour imported from Naples and a brick oven. The pie was oozing creamy mozzarella and a light coating of oil released by the delicious fennel sausage. Adding to the wow factor was a liberal dose of sauteed broccoli rabe and a base of pungent tomato sauce. I assumed the pizza would be hard to top; then I had the Wings Siciliano ($9.50). Lightly crisped by a coating of rice flour, they were very moist and tender and coated with an irresistible agro dolce (sour and sweet) sauce made with fennel, garlic, red chile sweet sauce, vinegar and rosemary—OMG good.

[ food • ŏ • lō • gy ]

Broccoli Rabe | A vegetable related to turnips and cabbage, this has a bitter flavor and leaves paired with tiny bud clusters that resemble broccoli. It’s also known as rapini or rape, and very popular in Italy.

Gnocchi | These are Italian dumplings fashioned out of farina, flour or potatoes, and

typically boiled and tossed with butter or sauce.

San Marzano tomatoes | A variety of plum tomato with thicker skin and fewer seeds that is thought to make the finest tomato sauce

An entree of Fruitti di Mare ($17), a variation on the Italian fish stew cioppino, had a tomato broth base with garlic, cayenne and clam juice as the dominant flavors. The stew contained generous doses of white fish, mussels, clams, calamari and shrimp and came with two big grilled crostini with an aioli and parmesan topping. Angel Hair Puttanesca with Shrimp ($17) was spicy and vinegary from its capers, black olives and anchovies. Beef Tenderloin ($19) was flavorful and hearty, coming as two small filets charbroiled and layered with slivers of prosciutto, mozzarella cheese and mushrooms. Topping all was a delightfully light garlic-lemon sauce. The piece de resistance, though, was the creamy sun-dried tomato polenta on the plate: bravissimo.

Playing at the ‘local dupe,’ good bidding landed north/south in a good six-heart slam. Good technique by the declarer was all that was left to bring the slam home. The hand:

for the defenders and go down. Bridge is a timed event, but we are allowed to think, especially before we play to the first trick.

Pacific Ocean with a handful of rations, a guidebook and one very hungry Bengal tiger. “Welcome to Pi’s ark,” quips the title character—though I don’t think Noah’s menagerie ever tried to eat him. We already know the boy survives his ordeal; the movie opens with a writer who has tracked down the adult Pi, now living with his family in Canada. Pi promises to tell his visitor a story so amazing, it will make him believe in God. And that’s the real message behind Life of Pi: With enough faith, we can survive the worst tragedies and unthinkable circumstances. Should You See It? Yes. Russian epic is a visual feast. The jewelry, costumes and staging are fascinating, even if the film’s two hours and 10 minutes drag on a bit. What is riveting is the ‘play within a movie’ treatment. The action moves on and off a theater stage, underscoring one of the melodrama’s themes: appearance versus reality. Until meeting the dashing, young Vronsky, Anna (Keira Knightley) played the role of obedient wife to her titled, older and very disciplined husband, Aleksei Karenin (Jude Law). Controlled and rational, he is the perfect contrast to Vronsky’s youthful passion. Some heavy-handed symbolism aside, it was enjoyable to watch the societal hypocrisy exposed, and even to see things right themselves, although the outcome is, of course, not what we hope for. Not enjoyable was seeing a beautiful, young, vibrant woman become unhinged by the conflicting pressures of her life and times. Should You See It? Yes! —D.W. Viewed at Plaza Frontenac Cinema

by p. allen smith Decorating with P. Allen Smith’s Holiday Collection Greenery>>

When I walk into the house and smell the

fragrance of fresh-cut greenery—now I know it’s the holidays!

Christmas decorating always starts with a walk outside. It’s a tradition I picked up from my great uncle. We would go out all bundled up to collect everything we needed to dress the house for the holidays. We would make all our garlands and wreaths with things we found outdoors, like pine, cedar and even mistletoe. We had everything we needed right outside the kitchen door, and our decorations were always unique. While I no longer get all my materials from the surrounding landscape I do try to make holiday decorating personal. This is especially easy to do with wreaths. Hung on the door or a window it signals to passersby that the Christmas spirit dwells within. Wreaths can be made of the traditional evergreen branches, and also of fabric, straw and woven vines. Pinecones, berries, fruit and seeds can be joined by nutcrackers, tree ornaments, jingle bells and even wine corks.

Lovingly handmade from natural materials from the garden or store-bought and cherished through the years, don’t be afraid to mix it up. Look for what’s available and even combine different types of fresh greenery. The next thing I do is think about a color palette I want to use to guide my choices. I like to change mine every year to work with my interior spaces and I’ll always pick things that catch my eye. Bark, twigs, berries or whatever I find in the garden can be my inspirations. Then the third layer I add is the sparkle, something memorable yet understated. That could mean beads, glittery snowflakes, little gold-wrapped boxes, velvety ribbon tied into bows—something that stands out. Indoors I go all out with a 12-foot Christmas tree and greenery hanging in both the garden and in the house. But everyone is different. Whether you are Christmas crazy like me or more on the laid-back side, there are lots of ways to use holiday greenery beyond hanging a wreath on your door.

An embellished swath of greenery is just right for a mantel. When I’m expecting company, I hang an evergreen candy cane from the foot of the bed out on my sleeping porch as a warm holiday welcome to my home! I’m proud that every piece in my Holiday Collection is hand-tied versus machine-made. Everything collected from the trees is used. Just the tips are removed and the trees are left to keep on growing. I like that the Noble Fir boughs are sustainably harvested. We’re not wasting anything. Material that isn’t used is composted and incorporated into a nursery mix for the Berry Family of Nurseries greenhouses. Now I hope I have inspired you to run outside (or to run to the store) and get cracking on making some holiday wreaths that will usher in the season for you and yours.

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

homework] Dear Homework,

I would like your thoughts about our Tudor house in Clayton. I feel it’s missing something, but I can’t figure out what that something is. Should I change the landscaping? Remove the wrought iron torchiere lights out front? Add a covered porch? Your observations would be helpful. ———Confused in Clayton

Dear Confused in Clayton,

After

Thanks for sending a number of pictures of your house. They really helped me decide what to do here… which is not much. The suburbs of St. Louis have a wealth of handsome European and Colonial-themed housed from the ’20’s and ’30’s. Your house is one of these. It has an interesting composition, quality materials and a few memorable details (including the drivethrough arch, front door surround and the commanding chimney). The problem is that an unhelpful pear tree blocks our ability to see the composition as a whole. I would remove it. I also would like you to consider painting or white-washing the gold-colored brick to more closely match the white detail stones scattered around the elevation. This will create a more striking contrast with the elevation’s dark-colored window, gutter and timber trim and underscore the home’s dramatic silhouette. Finally, some additional foundation planting to the right of the entry will help lead one’s eye along the entire length of the façade. I think the torchieres are fantastic and would definitely retain them. I hope this clears some of the confusion. ———Homework HomeWork is penned by Paul Doerner, president, The Lawrence Group. if you would like your home critiqued, contact us at homework@townandstyle.com

Gina Bundy always knew she wanted to be part of the business world. That’s why she majored in marketing at Southern Methodist University and followed up with an MBA from Washington University. After six years in pharmaceutical sales, she took time out to be a mom. “But as soon as my youngest was in school, I knew it was time to get out there again,” she recalls. “My husband, Graham, had been in commercial real estate, and he thought I’d be good at the residential end.” It was the right fit, and Bundy has been at Gladys Manion more than five years. She and Graham live in Ladue with their four sons, who range in age from 10 to 18. I got into the business at the exact time the real estate bubble burst. I worked as an agent nearly two years before I ever saw a dime. That’s when I knew it was the right career for me. I kept on plugging away. Eventually, it paid off. My favorite part of the job is negotiating. I’ve never been the type of person who goes to look at houses on a Sunday because I like it. I love the business end of real estate—advertising, marketing and deal-making. The best way to handle difficult clients is to listen and offer helpful suggestions. I tell them everything up front, and if they disagree with me, I advise them to go with their gut. The only thing I don’t like is when they think they know more than I do. If your house has been on the market awhile and hasn’t sold, chances are it’s not the agent’s fault; it’s the price or the product. The biggest misconception about real estate is that agents don’t deserve what we’re paid. People have no idea how tough this business is! We don’t make money unless we deliver. It’s very challenging, but never boring. I love sports, especially golf and tennis. I play as often as I can. It’s a great way to unwind. If I weren’t in real estate, I’d go into sports marketing. This is not a job for sissies. To be successful, you need to be detailoriented, organized and patient. Most of all, you must be energetic. You’re on call 24/7. I don’t sit around and wait for things to happen. I’m a go-getter.
