from the editor's desk Today’s health section is called A Better 2017. It talks about diet and exercise, and plastic surgery tweaks. It’s true that all those can improve how you feel about yourself—and about life in general. But after celebrating Thanksgiving just last week, I think something big is missing from the list: gratitude. This time of year we tend to obsess continuously about diet and exercise, yet we spend only one day a year dedicated to giving thanks. Something is wrong with this picture. Being content with what we have surely is at the root of all happiness, and by ‘what we have,’ I don’t mean materially. Even something as simple as the beautiful weather on Thanksgiving—or the amazing fall color we’ve had here in town—is noteworthy. And, if we don’t notice these things and experience them with gratitude, well, shame on us. Same for our health—what could be more important? Yet when we are well, we tend to go about our business without thinking about gratitude. Only when we hear about the illness of a friend or acquaintance are we reminded that good health is more like a privilege than a right. This is not to say that setting aside a special day for giving thanks is undesireable; but imagine how much better life is when we recognize that every day is special.

[GLOBAL FOCUS KIRK DAY SCHOOL by julia m. johnson TECHNOLOGY MAKES OUR PLANET SEEM SMALLER in many ways, but there’s a school in Creve
Coeur where kids use it to think more broadly about the world. This year, Kirk Day School launched a program called Growing Global Learners, an educational experience that transforms St. Louis kids into students of the world. Each classroom at the school, which serves children age 3 through sixth grade, has ‘adopted’ a foreign country and is folding its history, culture, language and geography into daily schoolwork. Once a class has learned about its chosen country and connected online with kids there, Kirk students devise ways to help their counterparts across the miles. Head of school Taylor Clement says the students link up with foreign counterparts mainly by sharing class videos, communicating online and writing letters. Teacher Anna Woodrow’s fourthgrade class is working with an orphanage in Mozambique, for example. “Our kids are earning money by doing chores at home, then donating through gofundme.com to purchase a gas stove for the orphanage,” Clement says. The kids set up the GoFundMe page and monitor it themselves. Kindergarteners are learning about Singapore and have connected with a class there in an especially personal way. “A grandparent of one of our students recently was in Singapore and went to visit the class, bringing letters from our kids,” Clement says. “Our world may be small, but we want to make it even more intimate through processes like this. Our kids have a place in the world, and they know how to serve others. We teach that through scripture, too.” First-grade teacher Evelyn Reith’s class has been corresponding with a 6-year-old boy in England. “We are studying three Christmas carols and recognizing that while two of them were written in England, they have broadened community through Christianity around the world,” she says. “It’s my hope that as we learn about other countries and grow in our relationship with our friend in England, my students will grow in their love and respect for all people.” The Growing Global Learners program ties in well with Kirk’s linguistics curriculum, which introduces kids to Spanish first, then French, Russian, Chinese, German and other languages that interest them. “My goal is that students are mobilized to reach toward, rather than withdraw from, people who don’t share their language and culture,” explains linguistics teacher Amy Scott. Clement says the program is designed to help students appreciate other nations and peoples before serving them. They’re also encouraged to stay in touch with their foreign friends as the years pass. “We want students to develop a heart of service for people around the world,” he says. “We don’t want them to see helping others as being mandated, or something we only do at the holidays. It should be a natural choice.”

ANYONE WHO HAS STRUGGLED TO FIND A
diagnosis for their mystery ailment knows the search can feel like a journey down the rabbit hole. That is the position I found myself in when, after a clumsy tumble, I had no idea what was wrong with me. As I waded my way to a diagnosis, I kept reminding myself of advice my doctor had given me earlier in the year: Stop acting so old! I was not going to get crotchety, regardless of how uncomfortable I was. My first stop was an MRI. If you’ve never had one, I admit they try to make you as comfortable as possible. That’s before they strap your body down onto a table and slide it into a narrow, confining tube. When the technician asked what I would like to listen to on Pandora, I tried desperately to come up with music that would show I still had it going on. But I couldn’t think of anyone who has made an album (are they even still called albums?) in the past 20 years. “Eric Clapton,” I croaked. Not acting old, Test One, had failed. With my MRI results on a CD, it was off to the orthopedist. Waiting in the exam room, I became a person I hated. I didn’t mean to, but when Doogie Howser walked in, or as he is actually called, Dr. Micah Hobbs, I was immediately struck by his age, or rather, lack of. And so I began: Are you over 40? Why are you dressed so casually? Why do you have beard? Have you just recently been able to grow a beard? When I worked in the financial services industry, people were often struck by my age, and sometimes my gender. Did I really know what I was doing? It drove me crazy, but I always assured them I was completely qualified and not to worry: my age and gender had nothing to do with my skill set. To his credit, instead of running from the room, Doogie examined both my shoulder and the MRI image and recommended fixing me right as rain arthroscopically. More questions ensued about his training and how many operations he had performed (What? I was doing my due diligence!). Then it was time to schedule the surgery. This was my chance to quiz the nurses about young Dr. Hobbs. But he got the “I would let him do my shoulder,” which is always better than “I would let him do my husband’s shoulder.” (For all you know, she is in the process of a divorce.) Test Two of not acting old, also failed. Still not satisfied, I called my nephew, a trauma surgeon in Georgia (humble brag). He picked up on the first ring, most likely because he knew I would just keep calling until he answered. After reviewing all the details, he agreed, ‘Have the surgery, Aunt Pat.’ When I hung up, I felt relieved until I realized some people still call him Mikey instead of Michael. Was he even 30 yet? Nonetheless, I decided to let my old shoulder be fixed by the hands of a young surgeon. All went well and at the next office visit, Dr. Hobbs had on a tie. He was going to his daughter’s classroom and wanted to look nice for her. You gotta love a man with the right priorities and good surgical skills. CONTACT PATTY AT PHANNUM@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM.

Meet us at THE MUNY this summer for another season of song and dance. The 2017 lineup is: Jesus Christ Superstar, The Little Mermaid, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, All Shook Up, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, A Chorus Line, and Newsies. Extra! Extra! If you have a budding musical theater thespian at home, they can learn from the best. In a new education initiative, The Muny is offering classes, starting Jan. 9, by local superstars Ben Nordstrom and Zoe Vonder Haar, pictured above. The after-school instruction is limited to 30 students per level, grades six through eight and nine through 12.
THE CHAPMAN GRANDCHILDREN BOB AND CYNTHIA CHAPMAN certainly believe in paying it forward. The CEO of Barry-Wehmiller, Chapman and his wife gifted the Clayton Century Foundation $7 million to further the Shaw Park Master Plan. Groundbreaking took place last month on the welcoming plaza entry to the park at the corner of Brentwood and Forsyth boulevards, thanks to the generous gift. Coincidentally, that’s also where the global manufacturing technology company is located.
JIM, KEVIN AND CATHY BERGES A generous gift from the BERGES FAMILY FOUNDATION will expand the Mercy Kids Autism Center’s early intervention program. Based on the Early Start Denver Model, the local program helps children with autism better experience the world around them at an early age, to ensure a more successful life path.
For a little bit of sweet nostalgia, why not support CAMPBELL HOUSE’s efforts to raise preservation funds? In a creative collaboration, the local museum has partnered with Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate to recreate a box of Busy Bee Chocolates, est. 1881, the favorite confection of Hugh Campbell. Apparently he gifted the sweet treat to the boys at Father Dunne’s Newsboys Home annually for 25 years, along with a dollar bill and a toy turkey! Available at the Campbell House gift shop and campbellhousemuseum.org; $9.95 for eight pieces.

ST. LOUIS You say you’ve had your fill of holiday house tours already? Maybe it’s time for a European jaunt to enjoy some architectural finery. And, if you can’t make it to see the Vatican, Pantheon or Michelangelo’s Laurentian Library anytime soon, a tour of the ornate Central Branch of the St. Louis Public Library will give you a taste of each. An architectural trifecta, if you will—and more—Central Library boasts some of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts and Neo-Classical architecture anywhere in the country. Designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert and completed in 1912, the impressive structure occupies a full city block downtown, at 1301 Olive St. (with Locust on the north edge of the block, and 13th and 14th streets delineating the east and west borders). Exquisite replicas of landmarks from the Old Country bring the Italian Renaissance to life in the heart of downtown. A $70 million renovation was completed in 2012, and it showcases a masterly blend of classical and modern architectural styles, while taking great pains to preserve the stunning building for generations to come. It’s a feast for the eyeballs: Regularly scheduled, docent-led tours are available for individuals and groups under 10 people on Mondays and Saturdays on a walk-in basis. Docents greet patrons at the large wooden desk in the Great Hall. Tours begin on the hour. For private tours and groups of 10 or more, a reservation is required. Pfizer Pharmaceuticals could be developing more advanced and lifesaving cures in Chesterfield by 2020 on 32 acres at the corner of Olive Boulevard and Chesterfield Parkway, if all goes according to plan. Part of consolidating R&D operations in the metro, it would bring together facilities from an existing Chesterfield location and another in Weldon Spring, at Missouri Research Park just across the Missouri River in St. Charles County.
Officials say construction of a $200 million building should begin next year. An additional 80 new positions are projected to complement the 450 already here, with the focus on furthering vaccines and cancer therapies for clinical trials. This is encouraging news, considering the loss of company jobs here in 2009, when 600 of 1,000 positions moved from the Lou to Cambridge, Massachusetts, following Pfizer’s $68 billion purchase of Wyeth. It doesn’t appear as though there will be layoffs this go-round. (When did consolidation become something of an epithet?) Coloring books for adults? No, no Minions or Disney princesses in these. They’re generally quite a bit more complicated than that, and folks 18 and older … sometimes much older, or younger in some cases … may relax while filling in complex line drawings from nature, urban views or historical scenes. And not with fat Crayolas, or even the 64-crayon box, but with colored pencils that need to be kept somewhat sharp whether filling in the detailed Art Deco geometric patterns atop the Chrysler Building in New York, or the wings of an exotic butterfly. Now, primary-color lovers and aficionados of subtle tone and hue can tackle St. Louis Splendor: An Adult Coloring Book by Jo Ann Kargus. Take a few days to fill in one of 50 drawings: perhaps a summer scene at Ted Drewes (with about 150 too few people in it), or try your hand at a favorite rendering of the Missouri Botanical Garden, with Dale Chihuly glassworks in the lily pond and the Climatron in the background. Kargus, an architectural illustrator who now lives and works in Imperial but started out in a Kirkwood studio, did the renderings, and The Bug Store in Kirkwood held a book signing for her last month. Upcoming signings are at The Service Bureau in Clayton (Dec. 16, noon to 2 p.m.), with two more coming up at County Library branches (Natural Bridge, Dec. 13; Grant’s View, Dec. 19) as the holidays
unfold. The book can be found locally at The Bug Store, Left Bank Books, City Museum and about a dozen other locations throughout the metro, and also is available on Amazon. Kargus says the book, now in its second printing, will be complemented in the spring with another volume focusing on familiar landmarks from far and wide … but her publisher, Reedy Press, advises her to keep mum on those images should a competing artist start sketching furiously. As of Nov. 28, parking rates in Clayton increased from a buck to $1.50 per hour. So, that’s $3 for the maximum at a meter, which is two hours. Re-feeding the meter won’t cut you any slack, especially if the meter cart operator chalks your tire to check whether you’ve simply moved the car. That gets you into overtime, even if you, say, move the car from one space to another in the row, metered lot or an upcoming ‘Park Once’ zone, which means you can’t finagle a longer period simply by moving the vehicle to a different space. ‘After the initial parking, the vehicle would need to be gone for 2 hours before

FRONTENAC
Black Friday came a day late for Saks Fifth Avenue at Plaza Frontenac, when a group of burglars ran in, smashed display cases and made off with pricey purses, then led police from multiple jurisdictions on a 60-mile chase into Illinois before a spike strip disabled the thieves’ car. The wild caper began mid-morning Saturday, Nov. 26, when Saks was sacked of Chanel handbags, and wound up when eight men were taken into custody on I-55 northbound near Farmersville. The vehicle, an SUV with temporary Illinois plates, must have been awfully crowded with so many knuckleheads and handbags bouncing around inside. Much of the merchandise was recovered, but it’s likely that more was inside a second car, which at press time had not been located. Luckily, no shoppers or store personnel were hurt; no shots were fired during the arrests. In this case, a criminal Christmas may have been averted. This crooked behavior may not be as Scrooge-y as running off with a Salvation Army kettle right under the nose of a bellringer, but it would still turn the Grinch green with envy. Greener, that is.

» Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Liberally spray a muffin tin with cooking spray.
This phrase, meaning you’re in big trouble and about to suffer consequences, dates to the early 14th century when it referred to Czech reformer Jan Hus, who was burned at the stake for heresy. In Czech, ‘hus’ means goose, so the goose, quite literally, was cooked!
» Cut apples in half by length, remove core and slice as thin as you can. » Cut pastry into five strips. (Cutting by width will produce smaller roses.) » Spread 1 T. of the apple butter on each strip of pastry, and line apples along the top half of the pastry. » Drizzle caramel sauce on the apples and then fold bottom half of the pastry up to almost cover the apples. Roll the strips up like a pinwheel and put in muffin tin slot. Bake approximately 14 to 16 minutes.

We should all be so
fortunate.
At Acropolis, we take a more personal approach to wealth management.
by sheila burkett
TECH OF THE FUTURE The other night my friend was telling me about her dog and how they got video footage of the dog’s digestive system. They used a tiny wireless camera in a capsule to perform the endoscopy. Since I hadn’t heard of this before, I researched the technology. I was amazed to find initial articles as early as 2009. This technology and the ability to control the capsule electronically is advancing the research on targeted drug delivery. Of course, it got me wondering about new technology developments that could change our world. Here are just a few to watch next year:
➧ Selfie Pay:
In an effort to improve security, improve identity verification and make online payments easier, MasterCard created Identity Check mobile service. The technology leverages your smart device camera to compare your image with a stored image of you. Although roll-out in the U.S. is this year, I expect to see biometricenabled payments take off.
➧ Medical Wearables:
myCareCentric Epilepsy is a wearable device that allows doctors and patients to manage epilepsy more effectively. The device collects information on a patient and can detect when seizures occur. The patient’s records are
available to care teams to help them understand the patient’s history and current care and to look at data on the event. Also, the devices we wear to count our steps and measure our heart rate will evolve over the next year to detect medical issues and save lives.
➧ Virtual Reality (VR):
Google is providing an open environment for developers to connect their software into Google VR technology. The video game, entertainment and social media companies will lead the way on combining VR into their experiences. It won’t be long before the dreaded video conference experience will turn into an everyday virtual experience. As technology continues to improve rapidly and change, we continue to see our lives shift and change with it. What may be seen as fun and simple today, such as your Fitbit, can evolve quickly into a critical, lifesaving device. Imagine the possibilities! CHECK OUT: Nintendo Switch (nintendo.com/switch)—one gaming device for the car or big screen.
We believe that a fair management fee, low-cost investments and full transparency are top priorities. It seems simple to us, although a lot of the investment management industry still hasn't caught on.

DESCRIBE YOUR AREA OF EXPERTISE.
by alexa beattie
WHAT ARE YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR YEAR-END GIVING VIS-A-VIS TAX ADVANTAGES?
“
One way to realize certain tax advantages through your year-end giving involves donating appreciated stock, which permits you to avoid paying the capital gains tax. Plus, you still get a tax deduction for the full fair market value when it goes to qualified charities. Another option is giving to a donor-advised fund, which allows you to take a tax deduction for contributions to the account in the current tax year, even if you don’t distribute to charities until future years. This can be a powerful strategy if you will be in a higher tax bracket this year than in the future. For individuals taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) from IRAs, another suggestion is to have your RMD go directly to charity, allowing you to avoid including it as income. Although you will not get a tax deduction for the charitable contribution, you will lower your adjusted gross income, which could have other tax benefits. If you are being partially phased out of making itemized deductions, this strategy could also add tax savings. Finally, deductions are allowed to be taken in the year they are paid, so if you charge a donation to your credit card in 2016 but don’t pay the bill until 2017, you can still take the tax deduction in 2016. Noncash donations (clothing, household items, autos, etc.) also can create charitable tax deductions. There are limits and nuances to each of these suggestions so, as always, it is wise to consult a tax professional before implementing them.

TUCKERALLEN, ESTATE PLANNING ATTORNEYS
“
The gift tax and estate tax laws are some of the most complicated the IRS has to offer. But don’t worry. Due to the gift and estate tax exclusions, these taxes currently affect only the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans. There are a number of ways to reduce the amount of gift taxes you may owe.
1. Gifts to your spouse: You do not have
to pay taxes on any amount given to your spouse as a gift, unless he or she is not a U.S. citizen.
MARY ELIZABETH COLEMAN, CEO Mary Elizabeth leads the team of TuckerAllen attorneys who provide personalized, complete, will and trust packages at a fixed cost. Estate planning is their primary focus. KIRKWOOD, O’FALLON, TOWN & COUNTRY, FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS 314.335.1100 TUCKERALLEN.COM
2. Education and medical expenses: You
will not owe tax on any amount paid for someone else’s tuition or medical bills. The payment must be made directly to the educational or medical institution.
3. Charitable donations: Charitable
contributions made to qualifying charities are not only deductible on itemized tax returns, but you also may deduct the value of your charitable donations from the amount of gift taxes you owe.
4. Annual gift exclusion: In 2016, you may
give someone up to $14,000 in gifts before paying any gift tax. The $14,000 annual gift exclusion is a limit on nontaxable gifts per person, and you may give multiple people up to $14,000 each without incurring any tax liability. However, the amounts of your annual gift exclusions are limited to a lifetime total of $5.45 million for Tax Year 2016 ($10.9 million for married couples for Tax Year 2016). Married couples may double the annual gift exclusion for joint filers, gifting up to $28,000 per year to someone or several recipients.

MIMI SINCLAIR & ADAM ROBERTS

by julia m. johnson | photos by arndt photo & cinema MIMI SINCLAIR AND HER NEW HUSBAND, ADAM ROBERTS, BELIEVE IN MAKING AN ENTRANCE.
Following a Sept. 17 ceremony at Holy Infant Catholic Church in Ballwin, the pair dropped into their unique airplane-hangar reception ... by helicopter. “It’s become a family tradition,” Mimi says of their show-stopper arrival. “When my sister got married, the hangar owner landed them in Forest Park for their reception.” The wedding ceremony featured bagpipe music, another tradition in Mimi’s family. Held at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield, the reception featured a burgundy and navy color scheme. Mimi describes the atmosphere as “rustic and laid-back.” Tables were set with decorative wine bottles, flowers, candles, lanterns and wood centerpieces. Some of the decorations came from a Sinclair family farm in St. James, Missouri. The reception menu was all about the comforts of home, too. “Billy G’s did pulled pork, chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, cookies, cheesecake and brownies—a little like a family barbecue, but nicer,” Mimi says. Guests enjoyed a signature strawberry-lemonade-vodka mixed drink, delivered through an ice sculpture ‘shot luge.’ They had plenty of family to celebrate with, including Adam’s relatives from Boston and California and the bride’s from St. Louis. A couple of water-related glitches threatened to dampen the fun, but the newlyweds handled them in stride. The hangar roof sprang leaks after a rainstorm the night before, dripping water on the tables, but Mimi says they were easily cleaned up. And the couple’s original choice of honeymoon resort canceled their reservation due to a water main break. But they ended up with a memorable stay at Secrets Silversands in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Mimi runs a Farmers Insurance agency and Adam is in sales at Dave Sinclair Ford. They live in Kirkwood. Mimi says marriage hasn’t really changed her relationship with Adam. “We’ve been together forever,” she says.

needs for comfort and joy. The Chesterfield Valley gallery can outfit a game room or home theater with everything from pool tables and bars to cushy seating for between-play breaks. Located just south of Highway 40, the sizeable showroom offers nearly any type of home entertainment, rug, furnishing or lighting product you can imagine. CEO Arash Amini says this is the season when families are particularly interested in investing in large, home-based merchandise, especially multiplayer games that encourage bonding time. “We have ping-pong tables, dartboards, game tables, pool tables, pinball machines and more— all kinds of fun activities that are about togetherness,” he says. Many items can be ordered in custom configurations and colors. Games and furniture with St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues and Mizzou themes are especially popular holiday presents, Amini notes. Convenience is another watchword at the store, which is part of the company founded in Oklahoma City by Amini’s father, Mack. The showroom floor is configured just like rooms in a home. You can experience exactly how furnishings will look and feel, instead of browsing rows of chairs or trying to choose a pool table from a catalog. “And we’re always expanding our line and updating the store,” Amini adds. “If you were here six months ago, you will notice it’s a completely different place today.” He and his staff attend at least 15 national merchandise events each year to ensure they’re on top of the hottest trends, he says. Soon, a new outdoor furniture vendor will set up space at the store. A second-floor gallery offers upholstered chairs and sofas, leather furniture, bars and stools, cocktail tables, light fixtures and more. “If you’re going to spend a few thousand dollars on a beautiful sectional, you want to be able to choose from 300 fabrics, and touch, feel and sit on the furniture,” Amini says. “We have experienced interior designers who know the products well. Bring your home blueprints, room colors and pictures to our design center—we’ll help put it all together.” Special promotions for the holidays include an ‘Amini Money’ program and a price match guarantee. “Amini Money is our largest sale of the year,” the CEO notes. When you buy an item, you earn money toward another. You can use it for any second product, which could even end up being free. “For example, you might buy a sectional, then choose an air hockey table as a gift for your kids,” Amini says. The price match program is a popular draw. “People know that when they buy here, they won’t have to shop around and worry if they’re finding the best price, especially at this busy time of year.” Once you’ve chosen your new items, store staff will deliver them, set them up in your home and show you how to use them. “We know time gets tight at the holidays, and people shop at the last minute,” Amini says. “We’ll help you figure it out.”

COVER STORY
LUKE GASSETT LEARNED FIRSTHAND WHAT YEARS OF HARD PLAY can do to an
athlete’s body. Gassett is an 18-year-old senior at Saint Louis University High School. A hockey player since age 5, the varsity forward noticed several months ago that something was wrong with his right hip. “I was feeling sharp pain, especially when I brought my knee up,” he says. “It felt like a pinched nerve. It was so painful, I’d have to stop what I was doing at times. I played through the pain for a bit, thinking it would go away. It didn’t.” His range of motion in the hip was compromised, too. He tried physical therapy, but to no avail. Further medical care would be required. Gassett says he wanted to be thorough, so he sought more than one opinion before deciding on Dr. Scott Kaar, a SLUCare sports medicine specialist and surgeon. An MRI had shown that repetitive wear from years of play had damaged muscle and cartilage keeping the head of Gassett’s right femur seated in its hip socket. Kaar performed a right hip impingement procedure at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, and the patient returned home the same day. “Dr. Kaar did the operation arthroscopically so my recovery time would be shorter,” Gassett says. “They actually took my leg out of the hip socket during the surgery.” Gassett says Kaar was his clear choice; he was impressed with Kaar’s confidence, accessibility and straightforward explanation of the procedure. “I wanted to feel comfortable with the person who was doing it,” he explains. “I knew I was in the right
LUKE GASSETT
hands with Dr. Kaar.” Gassett took about three weeks of bed rest after the surgery, and completed the recovery cycle with physical therapy. He returned to skating after three months, and was on the game roster two months after that. Now, he feels back to 100 percent. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” he says of the experience. Kaar sees patients of all ages, including those on rigorous workout schedules, and less active weekend warriors. His most common surgeries are ACL tears, but he is passionate about helping athletes recover from other types of injuries as well. “No matter the age, the technical part is the same with patients, but the conversations vary,” Kaar says. “For some athletes, it’s hard telling someone he or she will miss a season and that it might impact the following season as well. Making the decision to have the surgery is a big deal because much of the patient’s identity is tied to the sport. However, some injuries can be life-changing in the short term, even though they are often not a big deal in the long term.” SLUCare’s sports medicine team includes four physicians, a physician assistant and two clinical nurses. With two orthopedic surgeons and two family practice physicians leading the way, the group deals with everything from shoulder and knee injuries to concussions and tendinitis. Kaar says seeing patients get back to doing what they love is gratifying and its own reward. “I love the interactive nature of the job,” he says. “I love the people I work with who want to get better. And I find the surgeries I do cutting-edge, fun and exciting.”

Eggplant Szechuan, Walnut Shrimp, Hot & Sour Soup
THIS SMALL RESTAURANT (a former Taco Bell)
was opened in Overland last year by King Ma, a chef from Hong Kong with a very impressive resume. Most recently, he headed the banquet kitchen at the renowned Mandarin House, known to cater some of the bigger Asian American events in town. He also placed first in an Austin, Texas, version of the Iron Chef competition in 2008 (although the menu states 2009). Both credentials, and his 40-ish years behind the stove, have earned him the right to add the word ‘gourmet’ to his restaurant. Two menus are offered, one he calls traditional Chinese, which has the dishes less familiar (and in some cases less palatable) to Western tastes. It features items with bone-in hacked chicken, braised pigs’ feet, Chinese sausages and the like. The other menu contains dishes we’re more likely to recognize, but many get a special touch from chef Ma. The best example of this that we tasted was Walnut Shrimp ($11.95). The shrimp had chef Ma’s version of ‘breading’ —a light tempura coating—along with sticky
clumps of sugared walnuts and dabs of a distinctively non-Chinese cream sauce tasting of honey mustard and mayo. It was delicious and quite rich, between the fried coating and the sweet mayo sauce. Much more traditional was the Eggplant Szechuan Style ($7.95), the cooked vegetable coated with red pepper flakes and a sweet brown sauce that balanced the hot and spicy very well. The heat was mild, as you’d expect for Western palates. The sweet—the element that might be Ma’s ‘secret weapon,’ since just about all the dishes we tasted had sugary undertones—was noticeable. Another familiar dish was Hot & Sour Soup ($5.50), done well here with plenty of ‘sour’ and big enough to feed up to four. A soup on the Chinese menu, Seaweed Egg White Fish Fillet Soup ($6.95), relied on texture for its interest. It was a frothy white broth swimming with bubbles of hardened egg white and flakes of white fish. The flavor was bland and in my mind didn’t compare to the symphony of taste in our Hot & Sour Soup, but it was exotic in its texture; imagine the feel of puffy balls

CULINARY PEDIGREE
SZECHUAN: A style of Chinese cuisine originating from the Sichuan province in southwestern SALT & PEPPER DISHES: Crispy fried food that has been tossed with cornstarch and generous quantities of salt and pepper before frying.
BRAISED PIGS’ FEET: This is just what it sounds like: slow-cooked pig feet and ‘hands,’ considered a
delicacy in Chinese cuisine and said to be especially good for postpartum women. Of course, hooves and hair have been removed.

rolling inside your mouth. A starter of Salt & Pepper Calamari ($8.95) had the same cornstarch coating as the shrimp, but in this case, it overwhelmed the thin strips of calamari. The bits of salty fried crust that sat underneath the calamari was the ‘salt and pepper’ in the dish, and it was very tasty, but I would have preferred that it come stuck onto the calamari. Important to note is that the dishes here, in general, have a high oil content, which of course adds flavor but can also come across as greasy. The Pot Stickers ($5.95) were an exception to this trend, with nice, thin dough skins and good pork filling. They were served pan-browned and quite tasty. One disappointment was Beef with Scallion ($8.95), which came with several pieces of meat undercooked, almost raw, in places. The kitchen was very busy at the time, and possibly rushed. Which brings up another point worth noting: This can be a very crowded place, especially weekends at dinnertime, so avoid 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. if you don’t want to wait.

I enjoyed this film, although I can’t say it was anything other than a war love story. The filming was beautiful, set in WWII Morocco and Hempstead, England. You very much got the ‘period piece’ ambience. Brad Pitt was excellent as Allied airman and spy Max Vatan. Marion Cotillard was similarly engaging as his co-conspirator and wife Marianne Beausejour. The tension and drama in the first part of the movie revolves around their collaboration to destroy a Nazi target; in the second half, it moves to the devastating notion that Beausejour may not be who she says she is. Both themes are engrossing, which salvages the film from being just another typical love story. If you enjoy war movies, it’s a good one to add to your list.

Physician-administered treatments: Esthetician-administered treatments:
IF IT WEREN’T FOR A SECOND OPINION from doctors at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, Gloria Whitehead might have lost her leg. And if it hadn’t been for Anish Thomas, M.D., interventional cardiologist, Whitehead says life would have been quite different. Thanks to him, though, her peripheral artery disease (PAD) is in check and her arteries are open for business. PAD is a common circulatory problem in which peripheral arteries, those that carry blood to limbs, organs and the head, become narrowed by plaque, reducing blood flow. Thomas cautions that if these arteries are blocked, there’s a good chance the coronary arteries that serve the heart may be as well. Because of the risk of heart attack and other conditions, paying attention to early warning signs is particularly important, he says. “While it’s possible to have no symptoms at all, leg cramps, or ‘claudication,’ can be a sign that something is wrong,” Thomas says. “But often, these can be confused for the simple pains or tightening that come with exertion.” In addition to heart attack, the build-up of plaque also can cause critical limb ischemia (lack of blood supply), leading to gangrene and tissue death. “I started having pains walking down the street,” Whitehead remembers. “It kept on happening, so I knew I needed to have it checked. And my foot was changing color.” After being told that the arteries in her leg were dangerously blocked and amputation at the thigh might be required, Whitehead (who had had two previous lower-extremity bypass surgeries) sought the opinion of physicians at St. Mary’s, where endovascular (catheter-based) treatment for PAD has become commonplace. “Surgical bypass used to be the only option for PAD, but there has been a paradigm shift over the past 15 years, and now we have the tools to open up the blockage from within the vessel,” Thomas explains. Miniature instruments inserted via catheter through a puncture hole in the skin are used to balloon and stent arteries, and even to drill plaque away in more severe cases. These mostly outpatient procedures usually are performed under local anesthetic with DR. ANISH THOMAS mild sedation. Although this kind of treatment is becoming the norm, SSM Health St. Mary’s is somewhat of a leader in the field, Thomas says, explaining that he treats 200 to 300 patients a year, many coming from afar. “We have a broad patient population, and a lot of our cases are more technically challenging due to failed procedures elsewhere,” he notes. Thomas put at least four stents in Whitehead’s leg; another doctor from St. Mary’s treated her coronary arteries, which also were affected. And she’s a happy camper, saying, “They have done a wonderful job.” As for risk factors, Thomas says some can be controlled and some can’t. Whitehead is diabetic and used to smoke, both of which put her in a higher risk bracket. “The truth is, you can control the cigarettes you smoke, but not your family history,” Thomas says. Whitehead, meanwhile, is hopeful of a healthy future. She says she goes to St. Mary’s regularly for check-ups and has altered her eating habits. “I’m not perfect,” she laughs. “But I’ve made some changes, and I think they’re going to stick.”
GAME PLAN FOR 2017 IN FOCUS
BY RICK STOFF
Sometime between the excesses of Thanksgiving and the stresses of holiday shopping and partying, we realize it’s time to rein in the eating and drinking because Jan. 1 is right around the corner. This is easier to do when you realize just how bad too much of anything can be for you. Overindulging not only makes you look and feel bad, it impacts long-term health as well. So why not embrace moderation now?
HOLIDAY EATING No one wants a joyless holiday, and that’s what you’d have without the special foods and treats of the season. But as anyone who’s waddled to the couch to assume a prone position after Thanksgiving dinner knows, overdoing it is anything but joyful.
TREATS, NOT TOTAL ABANDON
“The holidays are special, and that means special foods,” says Connie Diekman, registered dietitian and director of university nutrition at Washington University. “We often approach the holidays with dread thinking we are going to eat too much and gain too much weight. Instead, turn to positive thinking—don’t force yourself into deprivation.” But, as they say at the spa: be mindful. “These are the holidays, have a good time!” agrees Teresa Syed of OneLife Wellness and Weight Loss Clinic. “But do it with intention. Eat things you normally would not allow yourself to eat, but eat moderately.” Diekman adds: “There is no question that the challenges to managing our weight are higher at this time of year. We have lots of holiday meals and parties with friends and in the office.”
HAVE A PLAN
The first step is planning for the upcoming feasts. “Think about approaching them with appropriate food choices and portions,” Diekman says. “Keep some level of physical activity going through the holidays. You may not be going to the gym as often as usual, but just running or walking outside is a good stress reliever.” And don’t put it off; there is nothing special about Jan. 1. “Instead of making it a New Year’s resolution, start today on laying out a strategy for a healthy lifestyle,” Syed suggests. “All through your life you should be mindful of what you put in your mouth; make good choices about eating healthy.”
GAME DAY TIPS
Approach the challenges of the buffet table with a good defense. “Drink a glass of ice-cold water before every meal and a glass with every meal. Water keeps you feeling full,” Syed says. “If you are going to drink alcohol, have a glass of water between each drink. It will help dilute the effects.” Also, Diekman suggests, “Do smaller meals throughout the day with lots of fruits and vegetables so they fill you up.” When meal time arrives, “take appropriate portions of the foods you can’t live without but more of the veggies and whole grains.” Syed says to design a strategy before you get there. “The table will be full of wonderful things,” she cautions. “Mind your calories by choosing the foods that are most important to you.” Diekman also recommends dividing leftovers into meals for the freezer. “That way, you can stretch those calories out,” she explains. “Leftover cakes, cookies and candies can be shared with friends, but you also can freeze them. They will give you something to look forward to on a cold, miserable day in January.”
MIXED MESSAGES
Our worst enemy might just be the ‘don’t waste food’ taboo. “We don’t want to waste food, but if you eat it, you are not exactly helping starving people,” Diekman points out. Syed says, “Most of us at some point think about having a detox period where we eat clean. You can do that in a lot of different ways. Reframe your relationship with foods, focusing on a healthy lifestyle that is about feeling good and being good to your body, not about ‘dieting to be skinny.’ If you make good choices over time, those will result in a healthier weight.” over time, those will result in a more healthy weight.” DECEMBER 7, 2016 | townandstyle.com | F15
ALCOHOL & CANCER We all know too much imbibing can be embarrassing and put the pounds on. But what we might not know is how closely linked alcohol consumption is to disease, especially the big ‘C.’
CANCER CONNECTION
“Alcohol absolutely increases the risks for cancer, especially breast cancer in women and colorectal cancer in men and women,” says Dr Yikyung Park, research scientist at Siteman Cancer Center. “Any level of alcohol consumption will be dangerous. Even one drink a day is going to increase your cancer risk eight to 10 percent.” Alcohol consumption is particularly risky for women because it elevates circulating estrogen levels—a factor in breast cancer. “Research has shown that if you have more than two or three drinks every day, it increases your risk of breast cancer by about 20 percent,” says Dr. Theresa Schwartz, SLUCare oncological surgeon. “Alcohol consumption also increases the risks for cancers of the head and neck, liver and esophagus,” Park adds.

WHAT THE WHAT?
“When alcohol is metabolized in the body, it creates acetaldehyde, which is toxic. It damages our DNA and is a potential carcinogen,” Park explains. “Alcohol metabolism also generates reactive oxygen species that damage the cellular DNA in the proteins and fats in the bodies so it increases our risk for cancer.” Schwartz adds, “In theory, women are a bit more sensitive to the cancer risks of alcohol than men. Higher intakes of alcohol are associated with higher levels of circulating estrogens in the body. About 80 percent of the breast cancers we see are responsive to hormones, so having increased levels of circulating hormones increases
HAPPY WITHOUT HAPPY HOUR
“There is no safe limit,” Park says. “If you are not an alcohol drinker, do not start.” Realistically, Park admits that happy hours and holidays are associated with favorite alcoholic beverages. “There are cocktails made without alcohol. If you do want to enjoy a drink, do it in moderation. That usually means one drink per day for women and two for men.” The research on breast cancer does not call for abstinence from alcohol. “It would be great to recommend abstinence if I thought that was going to work,” Schwartz says. “The data tell us that averaging less than one drink per day doesn’t appear to increase the breast cancer risk—it
In theory, women are a bit more sensitive to the cancer risks of alcohol than men. Higher intakes of alcohol are associated with higher levels of circulating estrogens in the body.” the risk of getting breast cancer.” Other factors are believed to exacerbate susceptibility to breast cancer. “If someone is drinking a lot, her overall nutrition generally is worse, and that tends to make her have more fatty tissue than muscle,” Schwartz says. “The more fatty tissue you have, the more estrogen you produce.”
should keep you at the same risk as the general population that doesn’t drink at all.” And vices love company, Park adds. “When people drink, they also might have cigarettes,” she says. “That is a doubletake, the two most toxic substances you can put in your body.”

The cold months are a great time to schedule cosmetic procedures that will make you feel better in 2017. “Winter is an excellent time for almost any plastic surgery procedure since most people tend to stay indoors and wear more layers of clothing,” says plastic surgeon Dr. Michele Koo. “Many body and breast contouring procedures are perfect to perform in winter because the recovery period requires surgical garments that hide well under clothing. It also provides adequate time prior to swimsuit season to show off the new curves.” Even nonsurgical procedures may work better in the darker months when tanning is not masking skin pigments and tiny capillaries, says Carol Anderson, certified aesthetic nurse specialist and owner of Nouveau MedSpa. “Also, you can have some swelling and pinkness in your skin for a few days, so you may want to hide out for what I call ‘social downtime.’” Check the chart to understand cosmetic options best suited for wintertime.

A Look Inside
the Willis Home in Clayton

A CLAYTON CHRISTMAS BY KARYN WILLIAMS | PHOTOS BY SUZY GORMAN
For historians, the Clayton home of Roger and Lucy Willis on Aberdeen Place is special because beloved author Tennessee Williams once lived there. For the couple and their two children (with another on the way), it’s special simply because it’s home. Lucy, who officially started an interior and floral design business last year, used her expertise to create inviting spaces that look just as good with the kids’ artwork on display as they do with family heirlooms. At Christmastime, the home’s warmth is amplified. T&S accepted an invitation inside. T&S | Have you always lived in the Clayton area? LUCY WILLIS | I grew up on The Hill. We moved into this house six years ago. We both love Forest Park and wanted a home as close to it as possible. We’re an active family and go to the park often! It’s also nice to be so close to De Mun Avenue and be able to walk to Kaldi’s and Sasha’s. T&S | Did you have to do any major renovations? LW | It was move-in ready in that we didn’t need to gut anything. But being a 100-year-old home, there were roof repairs and we’ve made a lot of cosmetic changes: landscape, irrigation, painting, decor, etc. We had to repair the back end of the house, and we built on a pergola. Some of the light fixtures are original to the home, but we replaced most of them. We just finished the basement, which serves as a play area and also has a full bath, laundry and workout room.
Clockwise, from opposite page: The kitchen; the back porch with pergola; the dining room table; the powder room; the entryway Pictured on the cover: Lucy Willis
T&S | Did you know Tennessee Williams lived there when you moved in? LW | Yes, it’s a great feature of the house, but not why we bought it. Williams mentioned the house in his memoirs. On his 100th birthday, a historian showed up unexpectedly at our door and ended up sharing a bunch of knowledge on him and the house with us. Apparently he lived on the third floor in the attic, where he wrote The Fugitive Kind. I’m due with our third child in January, so we’re converting that space into a nursery. It’s already finished with a bathroom. T&S | Do you always decorate this much for Christmas? LW | Yes! Christmas is my passion; I love it. I come from a big Italian Catholic family, and we always celebrated Christmas in my Nonna’s basement growing up. I want my kids to understand what an important time of year it is, and I want them to have traditions to

pass on to their kids. We usually start decorating the night of Thanksgiving, or at least the weekend after. I mix things up every year, although some stuff like the trees and staircase stay pretty much the same. I always do something fun and fancy in the dining room; there is something every year in each spot, but it’s always a little different. And we put lights up outside as well. T&S | Do the kids help? LW | I definitely try to include them as much as possible. Ever since they were babies, I’ve had a little tree for them to decorate as well, and they actually help me with the big tree too—although I admit I’ll rearrange a few ornaments when they’re not looking! I don’t want it to be all about me and how it looks; I decorate clients’ homes for Christmas, so I have an outlet for that! I want the kids to feel part of it. T&S | Do you entertain much during the holidays? LW | We always have friends over throughout December, and on Christmas day, I cook a big dinner, so we use the dining room a lot. It’s exciting for my kids because that space is where we celebrate special occasions. They have specific seats and placemats for the dining room, and they know it’s special. It’s my favorite room during the holidays because it just looks so gorgeous. T&S | What is your design style when it’s not the holiday season? LW | I would say traditional. I tend to work with people who live in older homes as well and appreciate a traditional aesthetic. T&S | The kitchen looks updated but matches the rest of the house well. LW | It was one of the nicest features when we first looked at the house because it’s so charming and well done. We just had to change the light fixtures and decor. It has new elements like custom cabinetry and a Viking stove but is consistent with the appeal of the overall home. I find super-modern, space-age kitchens are out of place in beautiful older homes. T&S | Tell me about the small powder room. LW | That was a total blank slate. It is so narrow! I assume it was a front hall closet that was converted into a bathroom. I always joke that it’s a bathroom for a Hobbit. The walls were slightly damaged and it would have required a lot of work to wallpaper it, so I just added to the bumpiness by covering it in pictures. It’s such a small space that I wanted to make it fun and interesting and display art. A lot of the figure sketches are my brother’s that I found in my mom’s basement.

HOMEWORK] DEAR HOMEWORK,
My house is fine, but I wonder about the color of the shutters, door, cantilevered balcony, etc. The trees are already trimmed back somewhat. Any ideas? Thanks so much! Warm regards, —SHUTTERED
DEAR SHUTTERED,
Your house already looks great, with many charming details and features. I like the maroon color of the front door, and I would suggest painting the faux balcony the same color. As far as the shutters go, I suggest replacing them with wider versions that have solid panels and a ‘clover’ cut out to reinforce the cottage charm of the rest of the composition. Adding hinges and tie-backs will add to the authentic feel. A French blue lifts the spirit a bit. I think the landscape also looks great. Just keep it clipped to its current look. That was an easy one, —HOMEWORK

REAL ESTATE
A LOOK BACK AT 2016 by karyn williams
TOWN&STYLE CRUNCHED THE REAL ESTATE NUMBERS TO SEE HOW THE MARKET FARED THIS YEAR. We compared the 2015 and 2016 sales statistics of single-family homes and condos* (through Nov. 17, 2016) in 17 zip codes.** Even though the results don’t show a huge change, the difference was positive: for homes and condos combined, 234 additional residences were sold this year, with a nearly $6,000 sale price increase. And they sold a little quicker as well, spending an average of 1 1/2 days less on the market. Below, we take a closer look at the rate of change to see how our communities grew in 2016.
