from the editor's desk This issue’s special section focuses on ‘money sense.’ (I personally applaud anyone who can make sense of money.) One of our finance stories in the section was prompted by the 2013 book, The Index Card: Why Personal Finance Doesn’t Have to be Complicated. If you haven’t heard about it, the idea is that everything you really need to create a secure financial future (besides a high-paying job) can be jotted down on a 4x6 index card. That’s like saying everything you need to know about losing weight is in a diet book. Yes, yes it is. But taking that information and turning it into a sound financial path (or actual weight loss) is a whole other ballgame—that’s why we have financial advisers and diet supplements. There is a huge disconnect, in both instances, between what we know and what we want. Sure, we should save 20 percent of our income, but that trip to Hawaii looks so restful, the kids will only be young once, and technically we have the money, right? Well, not really. You’re supposed to pretend that those retirement/investment/savings dollars do not exist and just skim them off the top and ferret them away. The index card also advises us to do other uncomfortable things, like pay off our credit card balance in full, which is another way to say we can’t buy that home remodel, car or other extravagant purchase. And it tells us to have ‘the talk’ with our money guy: is he/she “committed to a fiduciary standard”? “How, exactly, does he/she get paid?” If you think the answer is, “the fund pays them,’”you probably need that index card advice even more than I do.

COVER STORY
REDUCING RISK AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION by stephanie zeilenga EVERY 40 SECONDS, SOMEONE IN AMERICA DIES FROM CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE, which includes heart disease, stroke and congenital heart defects. This makes it the No. 1 killer in the U.S. Medicine can do a lot to help, but the most powerful weapon is prevention. By simply lacing up your sneakers for 30 minutes a day, you can reduce your risk, says the American Heart Association (AHA), which hosts the 2016 Metro St. Louis Heart Walk May 14 at Busch Stadium. “Heart disease is 80 percent preventable, and the walk not only is a fundraising event for AHA, but it also fits into our mission of promoting healthy lifestyles,” says Jennifer Jaeger, the organization’s executive director. The AHA recommends that people get 150 minutes a week of physical activity, with walking its No. 1 recommended activity. “Everyone can do it, and you don’t have to have access to special equipment,” Jaeger notes. A two-pronged approach to battling cardiovascular disease—on both the medical and lifestyle fronts—is the core mission of the AHA, which was established in 1924 and brings together volunteers, health care providers, donors and survivors in its cause. In 2014-2015, the nonprofit raised more than $133 million for research on life-saving surgical innovations and drugs. Research funded by AHA has contributed to discoveries of CPR, effective drugs, pacemakers and bypass surgeries, and currently, the organization is investing more than $5 million in studies at local research institutions. By 2020, it seeks to improve the cardiovascular health of Americans by 20 percent while also reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20 percent. “Deaths from cardiovascular diseases are decreasing, but the risk factors, such as obesity and diabetes, are increasing,” Jaeger notes. Signature events like the annual Heart Walk are vital to the organization’s success. More than 10,000 walkers are expected to participate this year, and organizers hope to raise more than $1.7 million. The 2016 Metro St. Louis Heart Walk is sponsored locally by the Centene Charitable Foundation and nationally by Subway restaurants. Rone Baldwin, Centene Corporation executive vice president of markets, is the 2016 chair. Weber Chevrolet is sponsoring the St. Louis My Heart, My Life campaign, which seeks to change the way we think about our health. “The Heart Walk is one of the American Heart Association’s premier fundraising events,” Jaeger says. One major factor in its success, she says, is local corporate and community involvement. This year, 130 companies will participate, about 30 more than in 2015. Besides encouraging its employees to sign up for the walk, corporations also can get involved through the nonprofit’s Executives With Heart campaign, chaired in 2016 by Brian Donaldson, an Edward Jones principal. “This is targeted toward local executives who agree to raise $3,000 or more for the Heart Walk,” Jaeger says, adding that more than 60 executives are participating this year, an increase of almost 50 percent from 2015. “Whenever employees see their leadership commit to a cause, they get behind it as well,” she adds.

most of your friends. You have friends from grade school, high school (of course!), college, work and those you pick up along the way through your kids’ activities. Four years ago, with some reluctance, I went to a happy hour a friend pulled together. She wanted to introduce me to someone she thought could be a new friend. Driving over to Sasha’s on DeMun, I thought: One drink and I am outta there. I have plenty of friends, I don’t need any new ones. And that’s where I met Raschelle, my Backtalk writing partner. On paper, we are complete opposites. She has an amazing, high-powered job; I had an amazing job but now stay home and write funny columns. Raschelle is not from here and has lived all over the country; I’ve lived within the same 5 miles for 56 years. Raschelle is a single mother with two kids; I have two kids, but also a husband of 33 years (and two dogs). With our differences, we should not get along. And if you read our column, you know we don’t agree on much, but from that night on, we became fast friends. That night there were several groups of sisters among us, so I announced that Raschelle and I would be sisters. If you take a look at our picture, that would be genetically impossible—my Irish freckles and red hair hardly match her brunette beauty. Almost immediately I started calling her Hoda and myself Kathie Lee, because I thought we were that funny together (even after only one cocktail, honest). To say we clicked was an understatement. Raschelle quickly entered my world, spending ‘eyeopening’ holidays with my large extended family and taking trips where I made her order bottles of wine and potato chips from room service. And both of us took it seriously when the other suggested we could make tons of money by starting a jam-making business (or other ‘surefire scheme’) that would be featured on QVC. Now that I have finally explained to her certain nuances of St. Louis (like why people care about where you went to high school, that Highway 40 is Highway 64, that yes, the 1904 World’s Fair was a big deal, and that everyone is related to everyone in St. Louis—or at the very least grew up with their cousin), Raschelle is leaving. And I have to say good bye. Our last Backtalk column has been written, her house is on the market, and the weekend for the big drive across the country to Boston has been circled on the calendar. I’ve not had many friends move away. People seem to stay once they get here, so this whole friendship-at-a-distance is new to me. And to say it has me rattled is an understatement. I’m sorry if this week’s column is low on laughs, but Hoda and Kathie Lee are splitting up, and while I realize you might miss the Backtalk column (though I hope you never used it for advice, but just for laughs), I am going to miss my pal. Safe travels, Hoda. And just know Kathie Lee will always be right here in St. Louis if you need her. And remember, if someone ever asks you to come meet a new friend, do it. You just might meet your Hoda.

Think of all the wonderful urban parks from coast to coast you’ve visited over the years, and chances are when it comes to naming the best of them, you’ll always come back to your favorite, the jewel of The Lou: Forest Park. Well, USA Today surveyed four national experts on urban planning—top execs at The Trust for Public Land, the National Parks & Recreation Association, the American Planning Association and the Project for Public Spaces—to find the 20 best urban parks in the country. Then a popular vote by readers ranked the top 10, with our very own Forest Park squeaking by Klyde Warren Park in Dallas to snag the top spot. Central Park in NYC was No. 10, surprisingly, with all the hype it gets and despite (or maybe because!) the fact that one of the expert rankers worked for Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the Big Apple’s parks department for 11 years. Prospect Park in Brooklyn was No. 8, but no California city parks made the final cut, including Golden Gate in San Francisco and Balboa Park in San Diego. What’s so great about ‘FoPo’ (as if we have to tell you)? One of the largest U.S. city parks, it is more than 1,300 acres in area, about a third larger than Central Park. Not to mention, many of the city’s greatest attractions are situated on the grounds and most, like Saint Louis Zoo, feature free admission. (But just try finding free parking for the attractions—nevermind, let’s not be curmudgeonly during this moment of glory.) Trumpet player Clark Terry was born in the Carondelet neighborhood of St. Louis. And he is the subject of the mural on the side of a building along South Broadway (7714, to be exact),
CENTRAL WEST END
which was dedicated earlier this month with great fanfare. Yes, there were trumpets to celebrate the jazz giant in the composite featuring three images of Terry, two of him blowing his horn, one in smiling repose. Terry’s mural is the seventh of 10 planned for that stretch of Broadway, between Bellerive Park and the River Des Peres in Carondelet, a town annexed by St. Louis in the late 1800s. Others commemorate early life along the river. One is more pop; a startling orange background on a corrugated steel surface, two eyes widely staring. Another, of ripening vegetables, is on the wall next to a community garden. So, just how big a deal was Terry? He played with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones and others. He is credited with mentoring the likes of Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis, legendary players in their own right. For the dedication, Champian Fulton played with her touring jazz quartet; she is the daughter of Stephen Fulton, a jazz horn player who was good friends with and studied under Terry for many years. Terry, named a jazz master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1991, was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. He was 94 when he ST. LOUIS passed away in 2015.
Kenneth and Nancy Kranzberg have done it again: The major arts patrons are flexing their philanthropic muscle on behalf of Washington U. The Kranzbergs plan to make a $2 million gift to support initiatives for the University Libraries and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, including (and Get Set for Plenty More Capitalization of Proper Names): • $950,000 for the Modern Graphic History Library in the University Libraries, which will be named in honor of Douglas Dowd, professor of communication design in the Sam Fox School and of American culture studies in Arts & Sciences; • $800,000 for the construction of the Anabeth and John Weil Hall at the Sam Fox School; • $200,000 for the Ken and Nancy Kranzberg Fund in the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, in honor of Sabine Eckmann, the William T. Kemper director and chief curator; and • $50,000 for the Gaylord Music Library, part of the university library system, in honor of Dolores Pesce, the Avis Blewett Professor of Music in Arts & Sciences. BTW, the Kranzbergs’ continuing financial generosity to Washington University is matched only by their contributions of talent, community-wide, in volunteer leadership roles. (Details would probably spill over into the second half of our magazine.)

The StL has hit a home run with its aptly named Musial Awards. The National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) recently recognized the Musial Awards as the Locally Created Event of the Year. The award was presented to the St. Louis Sports Commission at the NASC’s annual Sports Event Symposium in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Since 2005, our Sports Commission has produced the awards, which honor Stan Musial’s legacy by celebrating the greatest moments and stories of sportsmanship in North America. Recent honorees include golf legend Arnold Palmer, baseball Hall-of-Famer Joe Torre, Little League World Series star Mo’ne Davis and Turner network sportscaster Ernie Johnson. Are the Musial Awards a big fish in a small pond? Hardly. NASC is the leading trade organization for the sports tourism industry, with 750 member organizations representing more than 350 cities. And no one has to tell us how nuts The Lou is about sports. Nor about one of its favorite sons, Stan Musial, who is known as much for his character as his batting average. Honorees are recognized for extraordinary displays of sportsmanship that represent the best in sports and humanity. This inspirational night occurs annually at the historic, 3,000-seat Peabody Opera House in downtown St. Louis and airs as a primetime television special on our NBC affiliate, KSDK-TV. Presented by Maryville University, the 2016 Musial Awards take place Nov. 19. Mayhaps by then we’ll have yet another World Series championship to celebrate?

The monarch is the queen of butterflies. U. City has paid homage to this beautiful insect through one of its Citizen Volunteer Corps (CVC) groups by installing a monarch garden on Vernon Avenue, to the west of the dog play area. The city will be installing a second garden this spring at the Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse. This is good, because millions upon millions of monarchs (maybe billions, but I lost count last year at 54) migrate south from Canada to Mexico in the fall and northward in the spring. U. City has undertaken a challenge put forth for mayors nationwide to establish habitats for the bugs as they flutter by. Citizens, of course, can work on their own habitats. Plants that attract monarchs will be available at the U. City in Bloom plant sale slated for Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1.

THRIVE PROGRAM DIRECTOR LIZ KINSELLA
COVER STORY
[CHANGING LIVES THRIVE AUTISM SOLUTIONS by alexa beattie
IT MIGHT BE LIMITED EYE CONTACT OR A RELUCTANCE TO SPEAK. It could be a narrow food
interest or a resistance to play. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents differently from person to person, but diagnosis often is based on delays in communication and social skills, and an inability to learn from the environment. Because each case is unique, the most effective treatment also is individualized, says Liz Kinsella, program director and board-certified behavior analyst at Thrive Autism Solutions, recently opened in Olivette. “We build a treatment plan around whatever a family is struggling with,” she notes. Autism may manifest in behavioral excesses or repetitiveness (lining up toys, talking about one thing, only eating one brand of chicken nuggets), but Kinsella says it can be difficult to diagnose because the diagnosis tends to be based on what isn’t present rather than what is. “We look for milestones that aren’t reached, skills a child should have but doesn’t,” explains Philip Abbenhaus, Thrive CFO and vice president. Thrive offers in-home and clinic-based Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), an approach that uses scientifically validated techniques to teach a child. Currently the only behavioral treatment for autism endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General and the NIH, it combines close observation with positive reinforcement. “We take overwhelming things and break them down into small, manageable steps,” Kinsella says. An example of this might be interrupting the circuit of repetitious play by gently introducing a different toy. “If the child only plays with trains, we might start building ramps, or putting on toy passengers,” Kinsella explains. She says sign language sometimes is effective. “We might physically help them make the sign for ‘eat’ and then immediately give them food,” she notes. “We repeat this process over and over, and in five days, the child can ask for food by signing on his own.” Being able to communicate reduces frustration and cuts down on tantrums, Kinsella says. Parents also receive behavioral training. “How parents interact with their child is very important,” she says, referring to ways the family can encourage things like eye contact. “Instead of simply giving the child a granola bar, we suggest parents hold it up to their eyes so they have to look at them first.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more and more youngsters are being diagnosed with ASD, but it is unclear how much of this increase is due to a broader definition of ASD and better diagnosis. In 2010, the CDC estimated that 1 in 68 children had some form of ASD. (Boys are five times more likely to have it than girls.) “Our awareness of what places someone on the spectrum has changed greatly over the past 15 years,” Abbenhaus says. “That may be because we now know there are effective ways to treat it.” Kinsella agrees: “We see things differently now, and that quirky uncle who never married or held down a job is being viewed through a new lens.” Dr. David Callahan, a pediatric neurology specialist at Washington University Clinical Associates, says many children with autism can benefit from 25 to 40 hours every week of intensive ABA, interventions for a period of one to three years to achieve maximum effectiveness. While therapy at any age is beneficial, he adds the younger a child is when treatment begins, the better. Thrive’s clients range in age from 17 months to 17 years. THRIVE AUTISM SOLUTIONS OFFERS SCIENTIFICALLY VALIDATED TECHNIQUES TO TREAT CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS. TREATMENT TAKES PLACE IN THE HOME OR AT THE OLIVETTE CLINIC. SIMPLIFYING
FINANCE BY ALEXA BEATTIE
HAROLD POLLACK, SOCIAL SCIENTIST, IS A MAN OF FEW WORDS. Or, at least he is when it comes to finance. A few years ago, after meeting Helaine Olen, author of the bestselling Pound Foolish, he was inspired to boil down the dizzying superabundance of financial advice to 10 simple rules succinct enough to fit on a 4-by6-inch index card. In 2013, he and Olen published The Index Card: Why Personal Finance Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated. “I’ve thought about doing it for myself a thousand times,” says David Ott, founding partner at Acropolis Investment Management, who suggests the card first might be divided into two categories—financial planning and investing. In terms of planning, Ott suggests saving 10 to 20 percent of income (“Easy to write, but hard to do”), buying term life insurance (if you have dependents), having a low-rate mortgage (“Anything around 3.5 percent”) and maximizing tax-efficient accounts like IRAs, 401(k)s and a 529 college saving plan. He says his bullet points for investment would be a.) to diversify (by company, by geography, by stocks or bonds); b.) to find low-cost investments and c.) to maintain your discipline. He also recommends a basic estate plan that, first and foremost, takes care of children in the event of your death. “These are uncomfortable decisions to make,” Ott says. “But they are much more necessary than figuring out ways to save on estate taxes.” Ott adds, however, that following this advice is hard. “I compare it to a healthy body,” he says. “We know the simple steps required, but when it comes to saying ‘no’ to the things we want, it’s not as simple as it sounds.” Meanwhile, Peter Dolan, founding partner of Plaza Advisory Group, cautions against a one-size-fits-all, index-card approach. He says without an understanding of our own unique relationship to money, certain financial strategies aren’t relevant. He refers to the principles of ‘behavioral finance’—how emotions (specifically fear and greed) govern our decision-making—and says the more emotional we are, the more we behave in counter-intuitive ways. “When the market’s doing well, people want more and buy. When it’s low, they panic and sell. It isn’t logical,” he says. Dolan is the author of The Integrated Investor, which he co-wrote with son Ryan, an investment analyst at Plaza Advisory Group. Dolan says the book explores common finance myths and dishes up tidy wisdoms on subjects like diversification and risk. “Look carefully at the measurements of risk,” Dolan says. “And definitely diversify your investments. You want all 14 clubs in your golf bag, but you want each one to do something different.” In other words, it’s not the number of investments you have but how unique each one is in terms of its character and purpose. He also recommends staying away from media hype that generates either fiscal fear or excitement. “See things in the context of history, and make the most of advanced research,” he counsels.

Q| A VERY DEAR FRIEND IS MOVING AWAY, AND I’M FEELING DEVASTATED. I AM GOING TO MISS HER, OF COURSE, BUT I HOPE OUR FRIENDSHIP ENDURES. DO YOU THINK WE CAN MAINTAIN OUR FRIENDSHIP WHEN IT BECOMES LONG DISTANCE? —PEN PALS FOR LIFE
PATTY | Yes, but you are going to have to make an effort. Let me give you an example. My husband’s best
friends are all from college and live in different states. They are not the types to text, Snapchat or even talk on the phone, but each year they manage to find a way to get together for three or four days and act like they did when they were in college. I suggest you and your friend agree that regardless of what you have going on, you will meet on an annual basis just to have fun. If you manage to communicate lots in between, consider it a bonus.
TRACY CURRIER, JEN MILLER
CHURCHILL CENTER & SCHOOL
the sky is the limit dinner & auction by sarah gibson
RASCHELLE | I couldn’t agree with Patty more on this one. Long distance friendships—unlike long
distance romantic relationships—can be done. We have at our disposal airplanes, cars and trains, and we have phones that have been updated to the point where one is literally somewhere on our bodies most of the time. (Remember when there was one phone in the house, usually attached to the wall in the kitchen?) We also have Facebook (for the older folks here), Twitter and Snapchat (for the more hip among us), and we have Skype and FaceTime (modern-day TV phones right out of the Jetsons). What I’m saying is we have all the tools to keep our friendships alive and friends in our lives no matter where we live. So cry because your friend is leaving, but cheer up because no matter how far away she is going, she’s literally an Instagram away.
Q| MY WIFE’S BEST FRIEND WANTS US ALL TO GO ON VACATION TOGETHER THIS SUMMER, WHERE WE’RE BASICALLY LIVING UNDER ONE ROOF, EATING COMMUNAL MEALS AND GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER IN WAYS THAT I MOSTLY FIND APPALLING. IT’S NOT THAT I DON’T ENJOY THESE FRIENDS, BUT I HAVEN’T WANTED TO ‘GO IN ON’ A SHARED RENTAL AT THE BEACH SINCE SOMETIME IN THE 1990s. HOW CAN I STOP THIS TRAVESTY BEFORE IT BECOMES REALITY? —LIFE’S A BEACH
PATTY | What is wrong with you? Go on vacation with people you like. I am 56 years old and still vacation
with my friends from college. All of us know there will be times when not everyone is going to be up for doing everything together, so as long as that is understood, go enjoy yourself. Lighten up. Treasure the fact that you have friends who actually want to be with you. If you can’t wrap your mind around that, then stay at home and encourage your wife to go without you.
SANDI GILLIGAN, JULIE BAHR
RICHARD AND TRICIA SAUGET
RASCHELLE | Yes, life is indeed a beach. I guess I would have to harken back to some advice I gave
last month and say this is a good problem to have. I mean, you are basically complaining about how to vacation. Unlike last month, I won’t lecture you on the importance of gratitude (you can look it up if you are so inclined). Instead, I will simply remind you that life is short, and your friends and family are everything! So go on the trip, listen to Pearl Jam, wear flannel, enjoy your people. Hey, the 1990s were pretty good, if I recall correctly. PATTY HANNUM IS BEYOND SAD THAT HER WRITING PARTNER AND DEAR FRIEND IS MOVING TO THE EAST »COAST BUT PROMISES TO VISIT AT LEAST ON AN ANNUAL BASIS. WITH THE VERY LAST EDITION OF BACKTALK, RASCHELLE BURTON WANTS TO THANK THE READERS AND »REMIND THEM THAT SOME ADVICE IS NOT WORTH TAKING. SO LONG, ST. LOUIS!

COVER STORY
MONEY WISE PLAZA ADVISORY GROUP by karyn meyer PUTTING YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE IN THE HANDS OF SOMEONE ELSE can be daunting—but
Plaza Advisory Group proves it doesn’t have to be, says founding partner and principal Peter Dolan. For 30 years, the independent financial services firm has relied on a unique approach to wealth management, one that goes beyond the industry’s usual reliance on selling products, says Dolan, and instead focuses on what clients envision for their future. “The term ‘financial adviser’ is very broad,” he says. “From day one, we wanted to distinguish ourselves and design our firm around the investor, put ourselves on the same side of the table as them.” The team emphasizes attentive customer service and financial-based education, explains Dolan, who says many larger firms are heavily focused on marketing and sales goals for products like mortgages and mutual funds. “We focus on what clients want to do with their life,” he says. “That’s the first step. During retirement, most of our investors hope to spend time with family and friends, travel, or try out a new career.” Plaza Advisory Group maintains a select client base of affluent individuals, families and businesses, locally and across the country. “We want to make sure we’re working on our clients’ behalf instead of spending time soliciting new ones,” Dolan says. “We add clients when we see an opportunity to provide value.” Recent additions came last year when adviser Sherry Delo joined the firm as senior vice president, bringing along her valued clientele and a similar approach to integrated planning. Many clients have been with the company for 20 to 30 years, which gives Plaza advisers the opportunity to develop more personal relationships. “They trust us with the intricacies of their lives,” Dolan says. “They want life to move forward.” For most, that means continued access to the lifestyle they have built. In the next stage of their careers, some of the firm’s clients are looking to make more meaningful impacts in the local business community, whether that’s through investing in companies or sitting on various boards, public or nonprofit, Dolan says. Others choose to go back to school or pursue passions like history and art by auditing classes at Washington University or becoming docents at the art museum. “We provide the structures, strategies and tools so they can do that,” Dolan notes. In today’s world, with news available 24/7 and global issues constantly affecting the market, the complexity of wealth planning continues to expand. Plaza’s strategy of helping clients through the maze has resulted in more well-informed and successful investors, he says. “Our investors want to understand what is going on in the world and how their portfolios are designed to protect on the downside and have opportunity on the upside of the market,” Dolan says. To help with this, the firm relies on its signature financial-based education. “We involve clients in everything we do so that when current events happen, they aren’t concerned,” he says. “We explain how their portfolios are diversified so they have proper expectations of how they will perform in different markets.” Dolan says one of the biggest hindrances to meeting long-term goals is emotion-driven decision making, like reacting to global headlines or daily market volatility. “To combat this, we offer technology solutions so clients can access their portfolios in real time, and our specialists make things easily understandable in an industry that is designed to be confusing and intimidating,” says Dolan. “We help clients work through all the clutter—and understand it. It’s all about giving them the tools to be confident and involved in their financial future.”

SOUTHERN IS ADJACENT to the uber-popular Pappy’s,
whose owners have branched out from barbecue into fried chicken. Chef Rick Lewis, most recently of Quincy Street Bistro, is at the helm, and he’s brought along his expertise in comfort food. The interior is appropriate, with chicken-crate and chicken-wire touches. Much of the seating is communal at tall tables. Dinner is served only on Friday and Saturday evenings until 7 p.m. This is a place where fried chicken is king, but other fried favorites come in a close second. There’s fried catfish, green tomatoes, Mofu and even fried bologna (in sandwich form). I watched intrigued as they fried the veggie of the day, brussels sprouts, in a deep-fry basket. Like at Pappy’s (and Dalie’s out west), you wait in line to give your order, then have a seat and the food is brought to you on a metal restaurant pan. An order of 2-Piece White ($10) came piping hot and delicious with a thick-battered crust. You can order your heat level (this is Nashville-style ‘hot’ chicken), so the choices range from ‘cluckin’ hot’ to mild, which will still have a bite. My ‘hot’ order was definitely lip-
burning, so be forewarned. Plates come with two sides, bread and pickles. The pickles are divine, a little sweet and a little dilly. They’re not on the menu as a separate dish, but if you ask, you can get some for $3. Don’t laugh, but a Mofu sandwich ($11), made with local tofu, was delicious. It came with a block of tofu deep-fried hot (in both senses of the word) piled onto a brioche bun with baby lettuce, pickle, tomato and creamy buttermilk-lime dressing. Each bite was a dripping, crunchy, hot mess. A Large Fish Plate ($13.75) lived up to its name with a pile of curled catfish fillets. The fish was fresh tasting, but the thick crust overpowered all but the largest of them, leaving you with the sensation that you just made a meal out of fried breading. It also came with two sides of your choosing. Don’t miss the Buttermilk Biscuit ($3.25), which comes as a mini-loaf of delicious, moist bread accompanied by whipped butter and a stellar apple butter. On one visit, the sides ($3 each) came to the table cold, but the second time around, that was remedied.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SOUTHERN FOOD?
MOFU Tofu made by a St. Louis-based company, from non-GMO soybeans HOPPIN’ JOHN A traditional Southern dish made with black-eyed peas, white rice, bacon, onions NASHVILLE-STYLE CHICKEN This refers to spicy-hot fried chicken fried in lard and seasoned
with cayenne and, often, hot sauce. It is attributed to Nashville because the originator of hot chicken is thought to be the family of Andre Prince Jeffries, owner of that town’s Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack.
[ aftertaste ] » When they say ‘hot’ chicken, they really mean it! It’s ultra spicy, crunchy, moist and delicious. The sides also are delicious, and the place has a cool, casual vibe, too.
— STEPHANIE Z. OF U. CITY
»
The food was fantastic, and the Southern vibe was apparent both in the style of the restaurant and in the menu, all the way down to the Southern greens. The buttermilk biscuit is not to be missed!

The best of the bunch was the Southern Greens, which were slightly bitter and cooked with bits of pancetta. The brussels sprouts veggie of the day had good flavor and, surprisingly, didn’t taste fried or even oily. They came tossed with slivers of red pepper. The Hoppin John included andouille along with its white rice and black-eyed peas. And the Maple-glazed Butternut Squash came largely mashed, but not overly sugary. Mashed Potatoes and Gravy were deliciously potato-y but needed salt and pepper. The Mac +Cheese, creamy and crunchy from breadcrumbs, tasted like it might have some beer in there. At the register, a chalkboard lists a few desserts— tempting ones: banana pudding, chocolate brownie, bread pudding, etc. There were no regrets over our Bread Pudding with Crème Anglais. The texture was soft and doughy, the sauce deliciously creamy and sweet. Speaking of sauce, ask for one to enjoy with your meal. We had some General Tso’s sweet and spicy Asian glaze, thick and sugary, that went well with all the savory food.

It’s the food I grew up eating. It reminds me of my childhood, and I like the satisfaction on people’s faces when they’re eating it.
WHY NASHVILLE-STYLE ‘HOT’ CHICKEN?
There weren’t any around here, and it is taking off really big in Nashville and surrounding areas.
WHERE DID YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SIDES? There are the usual staples, but we have added things like Hoppin’ John, which you rarely see. We are trying to find sides that complement the chicken.
FAVOURITE MENU ITEM?
If not chicken, then the fried bologna!

JERRY VOGEL AND WILL BONFIGLIO IN OLD WICKED SONGS
FRONT&CENTER] by donna parrone
THERE IS MUCH TO BE SAID FOR A STRONG PRODUCTION that has many excellent elements,
great actors, a good script, excellent design and skilled directors. When you have all that, but one element is off, sadly, it tends to stick out like the proverbial ouchy thumb. And you might say, “Well, they got everything else right.” Yet you would be equally justified to say, “How did this get missed?” New Jewish Theatre’s production of Old Wicked Songs has a glamorous set by Dunsi Dai that calls up the Old World elegance of Vienna. There is an excellent script by Jon Marans in which he gives us subtle, nuanced characters that require actors who can inhabit these roles with equal subtlety and grace. Certainly, director Tim Ocel has that in one of his actors; Jerry Vogel is having a terrific run playing secretive men—Imagining Madoff, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Shining City and now this. His Mashkan is charming, a trifle sad and tremendously complex, but Vogel pilots the character with aplomb. Unfortunately there are only two actors in the entire play and the younger man, Will Bonfiglio, plays Stephen Hoffman, a burned out piano prodigy and Jew masquerading as a Protestant. Bonfiglio is not as nuanced, his anger and obnoxiousness come off as his only notes, and we are no closer to understanding him at the end of the two and a half hours than we were in the first scene. Director Ocel has to take responsibility for this, either by not having guided him to a fully realized character or not casting someone who could get there. That said, Vogel’s performance alone is worth the price of admission, and the play certainly fulfills the essence of the script, in which every life requires sadness and joy. The same could be said of The Rep’s latest offering, Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Swing, which has tremendous actors and a slick combination of movement, media and music. On the surface, it’s all delightfully intriguing to the audience. It’s when you ask yourself what the author is trying to say that we end up with a bit of a mess. The play is part bio of a great pitcher who might have been the one to break the color barrier, had he been a bit braver; part Greek tragedy, a man brought down by his own flaws, except that he triumphs in the end; and part exploration of racial issues in America. It looks wonderful, all swirling music and lights and a surreal video of Paige’s fear of ‘whitening’ himself, which was excellent but unsupported in the script. The acting all around was first-rate. I especially liked the two women: Vanessa A. Jones, who played the elegant, learned Mrs. Hopkins, and her daughter Moira, played by Tsilala Brock. They were so delightful I wish they had a scene that could pass the Bechdel test, you know, where women can talk about something other than their men. Mrs. Hopkins also gives Moira some terrible advice on how to get ahead in the world by ‘catching’ a man with money. These women were better than the words they were given to say.

Oh dear, what a mess. It might be easier to say what isn’t in this new movie about the ‘80s (billed misnomerishly as “the spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused”). There’s no humor, no tension, no pathos, no arc, no new twist on a decade that inspired wonderful films like Boogie Nights, Back to the Future and The Breakfast Club. In fact, it isn’t a story at all, but a tedious plod through an inconsequential string of dull scenes, shamelessly lazy depictions of ‘80s college life. Someone (we don’t remember who, and it doesn’t matter) fills a water bed with a leaky garden hose and chugs beer through a plastic baseball bat. Someone puts cheap cologne down his trousers and has sex in a closet. Someone half-reads a Jack Kerouac novel, babbles philosophical nonsense after a suck on a bong, punts beer cans off a roof and talks on an avocado-colored phone. So it isn’t strictly true that there’s nothing here, for there are 1980s cliches by the fistful. This is paint-by-numbers ‘80s: disco balls and Gremlins, plaited belts and polyester, pointycollared shirts. There’s enough Schlitz to sink a ship, and by the end, we were bored stiff with jocks in bad hair and high-waisted, bulgy-crotched jeans. Even the music’s lazy: ‘Shake your Groove Thing’ … ‘Ladies Night’ … I said a hip hop, hippie to the hippie, and so (tediously) on. Sadly, there’s no comeuppance for the jarring sexism that rears its unattractive head in full-screen breast and buttocks shots (and words like ‘poontang’), or the director’s perplexing decision to cast a single black actor. About halfway through, one of the jocks (did we even mention they’re all members of a baseball team?) says, “We’re in the early innings. We’ve got a whole game to play.” Need we say our hearts sank?

LOOK, FEEL BETTER SLUCARE PHYSICIAN GROUP by alexa beattie BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE LIVING LONGER AND WORKING LONGER, they want the
way they look to match the way they feel. “Back in the old days,” says Dr. Natalie Semchyshyn, SLUCare Physician Group cosmetic dermatologist, “surgery was the only option for looking younger, but now, ‘small’ treatments like Kybella are making a big difference. It’s very exciting.” When it comes to an aging face, says Semchyshyn, it’s about balance: “The cheeks sag, the skin at the eyes and temples thins, the chin comes out.” But Semchyshyn says by addressing issues like a double—or triple—chin, balance can be restored for youthful results. Kybella, she says, is proving particularly effective for neck fat, and may have implications for fat in other areas of the body in the future. Kybella, which was FDA-approved in 2015, is a lab-manufactured version of deoxycholic acid—a naturally occurring substance in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat cells. Semchyshyn says it is administered by injection and two to four treatments are typically performed two months apart. She explains that once destroyed, fat cells can’t reform. “If a person gains a large amount of weight after the procedure, they would gain it in another part of the body,” she says. Semchyshyn, who participated in FDA testing, calls the procedure “remarkably safe,” and says it has minimal side effects. She cites swelling, soreness and numbness as usual reactions, and recommends that patients lessen bruising by avoiding blood-thinning compounds like aspirin, fish oils and vitamin E. she says a patient might experience nerve damage, which could result in an asymmetrical smile. But she says this condition is rare and completely reversible. DR. NATALIE SEMCHYSHYN AND PATIENT The treatments, which Semchyshyn says take little more than 15 minutes, involve mapping the area of chin fat with a grid of dots one centimeter apart, being careful to avoid the nerves that run along the jawline. “We calculate the number of injections based on the number of dots,” she explains. Depending on the size of the area, a person might need between one and three vials of deoxycholic acid. Semchyshyn is quick to note that the Kybella needle is very small and treatment proceeds quickly. “Patients may experience an intense feeling of warmth caused by the destruction of fat cells,” she says, “but ice packs help to alleviate the sensation.” Semchyshyn says in some cases, improvement may be visible after the first treatment, however most people see significant results after the second treatment. “In a younger person, the neck goes right back,” she says. “But an older person with skin laxity may notice a slight increase in sagginess.” Most people, however, are happy just to have the fat gone, she adds.

gut rehab
At The Lifestyle Center anti-aging clinic, medical director Dr. Richard Moore specializes in both invasive and noninvasive body-contouring. For stomach fat, he says a procedure called Tickle Lipo is particularly effective and far less traumatic than traditional liposuction. Not only does the cannula (a tool used to suction fat) selectively separate (rather than tear) the fat from fibrous connective tissue, but it does so in a relatively painless way. Discomfort is greatly reduced because the instrument ‘tickles’ the nerves and confuses them. “Some people laugh through the entire procedure,” he says. A full recovery takes four to six weeks, but patients may return to work within a few days.
\ Vanquish ME, is a noninvasive procedure that allows the patient to resume all normal activity instantly. The device works, Moore says, by delivering radio frequency energy to heat (and kill off) fat cells. He estimates between 30 and 40 percent of cells are destroyed in the process, amounting to a noticeable reduction in size after the four-treatment series. A larger person may lose as much as 5 inches on their gut, he says, while someone with a smaller pooch might shed an inch. Moore adds that another benefit of Vanquish ME is it also can tighten skin and improve cellulite. Tickle, on the other hand, is better for sculpting and provides an excellent source of fat for transferring to bottoms and breasts, areas patients sometimes want to enhance. Moore notes that only the subcutaneous fat above the muscle can be removed; the deeper, visceral fat that builds up around the organs and causes life-threatening medical problems can be reduced only by weight loss. “When sculpting bodies, we still always emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle,” he stresses.

back issues
As more minimally invasive treatments are developed, an increasing number of people are interested in simpler ways to improve their physical appearance, says Dr. Marissa Tenenbaum, West County Plastic Surgeons of Washington University. Buttock augmentation by fat transfer is particularly popular, she says. “It’s an excellent option for women near their ideal body weight looking to reshape their bottom with some natural tissue,” she says, adding that surrounding areas can be liposuctioned to improve the ‘balance’ of that area. Contrary to expectation, Tenenbaum says sitting is possible post-treatment because fat is transferred to the upper, rather than lower, buttock. Bruising and swelling are the main side effects. Tenenbaum also uses a new procedure called Cellfina to treat the appearance of cellulite in bottoms and thighs. With a small, needle-sized device, this procedure addresses the primary structural cause of cellulite, the connective bands woven throughout fat in the thighs and buttocks. The FDA-cleared, one-time treatment is done inoffice with numbing medication; it smooths bottom and thighs by ‘popping out’ dents and dimples. Tenenbaum stresses that patients need to maintain their weight for best results, which can last— according to manufacturers—up to two years.

Arg!—the dreaded bra strap roll. It's a very common problem, says Dr. Terry Myckatyn, associate professor of plastic surgery and director of cosmetic surgery at Washington University Medical School. Myckatyn, however, offers a solution to this, and other embarrassing fat problems. (Back fat, anyone?) CoolSculpting, a relatively new, noninvasive treatment, kills fat cells by freezing, he explains. A phenomenon called 'popsicle panniculitis'—the loss of cheek fat from sucking a frozen popsicle—is the idea behind the procedure, which may result in a 15 to 20 percent fat reduction, Myckatyn says. CoolSculpting machines work by drawing fatty tissue toward the surface and delivering intense, controlled cooling. Myckatyn says fat is more sensitive to cold than other types of tissue, which means it is intentionally 'injured' during this process, but well before muscles, bones, nerves and skin can be adversely affected. Until the area numbs, a patient may feel a tugging or pinching sensation. Once the fat cells die, they are eliminated naturally by the body's immune system. Myckatyn says new fat cells are generally not produced unless a person gains a massive amount of weight. He cautions that if a patient doesn't pursue a healthy lifestyle, existing fat cells can grow bigger. “The challenge, however, is not to deflate the balloon too much, or else you're left with a lot of loose skin, which then requires surgical intervention,” Myckatyn says. He calls liposuction a more effective fat-removal method, but cites CoolSculpting as an option for those who want to avoid surgery. A newer version of CoolSculpting that reduces treatment time from one hour to 35 minutes comes out in May.

If you look in the mirror and feel a change is needed, it could likely be as plain as the nose on your face—literally. While facial fixes are numerous—eye-lifts, cheek and chin implants, face-lifts—many people dislike the size or shape of their nose, the most prominent feature on the face. Yet the thought of having a nose job may be overwhelming. Will I look natural? Will there be telltale signs? Could I develop other complications that affect my look or breathing? Those issues need not be concerns with modern rhinoplasty, the technical name for a nose job, says Dr. Brock Ridenour, board-certified facial plastic surgeon. First and foremost, he recommends working with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon, one who has performed the procedure many times and is wellversed in all the options. “Having trained with some of the most renowned rhinoplasty surgeons, I’ve developed a set of guidelines that will give patients optimal results,” Ridenour says, adding that rhinoplasty has become one of the most sought-after procedures among his patients. The one-size-fits-all nose is a thing of the past, he notes. “We focus on modest and measured refinements that will complement the patient’s skin, facial features and ethnic identity,” Ridenour explains. Additionally, today’s procedures strive for minimal excision of bone and cartilage. “Our emphasis, of course, is on achieving a realistic and pleasing appearance while preserving the functions of the nose,” he says. That means rhinoplasty might include contouring of nasal cartilages to correct a deviated septum or other airway obstruction and soft tissue ‘padding’ grafts to prevent visible irregularities beneath the skin, depending on a patient’s particular situation, Ridenour explains. “The ultimate + goal is an improved, natural shape that is strong enough to resist change and deformity + over time.”

Dr. William G. Hart of Hart Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery Institute explains how brachioplasty (arm surgery) can improve a niggling problem for many women. An invasive surgical arm-lift is particularly helpful, Hart says, for people who have experienced massive weight loss following bariatric surgery, and it has gained popularity in recent years. This surgery involves liposuction and leaves a scar that usually runs from elbow to armpit. However, Hart says new barbed sutures designed for deeper layers of skin have greatly improved the scar’s appearance. After the liposuction, excess skin is removed, Hart says. Post-surgery drains are removed after three to five days, and compression garments are worn for two to three weeks. A patient may require general or local anesthesia with sedation for the surgery, which takes one to three hours. Hart says the most effective noninvasive procedure he has used involves radio frequency energy, administered by a probe, that heats and liquefies fat and cauterizes blood vessels and fibrous tissue between skin and muscle. An added benefit, he says, is the reduction of loose skin. “As the probe moves closer to the skin and heats it, the dermis contracts,” he explains. Scarring is greatly reduced because the probe enters the body through small incisions at the elbow. Compression also is used for two to three weeks, with final results visible in eight to 10 weeks. + + + +

Would you rather have $20 now, or $40 next week? That’s a question WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY School of Medicine researchers have been asking as part of an inquiry into the genetic component of the preference for instant reward. “Every day we make decisions about obtaining immediate gains, which come at the cost of delayed but larger advantages,” says ANDREY ANOKHIN, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry. By studying adolescent twins and using mathematical formulas, Anokhin’s lab has identified genes that he says appear to be involved in that preference. The work is significant, he says, because of the possible connections between this sort of decision-making and binge drinking, drug use and nicotine dependence.

immunology, developed the vaccine in 1997. There are believed to be 390 million cases of dengue infections in the world each year. Symptoms are similar to those of influenza and can be deadly. While Mexico is the first country to approve the vaccine, other countries are reviewing it. Biopharmaceutical company Sanofi Pasteur has produced the first doses and expects to manufacture 100 million doses a year.
» smoking decrease in china
Although nearly one-third of the world’s smokers live in China and two-thirds of Chinese men become daily smokers before age 25, SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY research is showing that there may be an overall decline in smoking by male teens. “Even though the smoking rate remains high in China, over the last 25 years, the rate of adolescent males starting to smoke has lessened by 1 percent a year,” says JIN HUANG, Ph.D., assistant professor of social work at SLU’s College for Public Health and Social Justice. Huang and his team studied 2,400 males between ages 15 and 20 from four different kinds of neighborhoods—from rural communities to highly populated cities—and discovered that the most marked decrease was in urban areas. “Teens in more

» amino acids for growth A team of researchers from WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY School of Medicine has found that insufficient intake of essential amino acids and the nutrient choline is linked to stunted growth. “Stunting affects half the children in rural Africa and millions more elsewhere in the world,” says DR. MARK J. MANARY, the Helene B. Roberson Professor of Pediatrics, who led the study. Manary and his team partnered with Johns Hopkins University, evaluating blood samples of 313 children, 12 to 59 months, from rural Malawi, and found that 64 percent of them were stunted, based on WHO growth curves. Eighty percent of these children were found to have low levels of all nine essential amino acids. Manary, who spends several months a year in Africa treating malnourished children, says the goal is to find a means—by way of a food product or additive— to reduce the condition. The findings are published in an online issue of EbioMedicine.

young college graduate in his 20s. “I must have driven that circle a thousand times, always saying to myself that if I were to become successful enough to live anywhere I wanted in St. Louis, it would be there,” he recalls. He and his wife were living in Richmond Heights when, remarkably, a new lot became available in the prestigious neighborhood in 1987. “Oscar Buder, one of the original founders of the Carrswold subdivision, had kept a side lot next to his house open,” the homeowner says. “His wife lived well into her 90s, but when she passed, the estate decided to sell the house and lot separately.” That proved to be good news for this admirer of the area. Even though the couple had already given an earnest deposit on another property nearby, they sacrificed the money to build their dream home. “We always loved the idea of living in a mature neighborhood, and this one offered a park-like setting still very close to downtown Clayton.” He says his mother had always designed the houses he lived in growing up, which influenced him to adopt that skill as a hobby. “I wanted a Georgian Colonial style and drew up basic ideas for the layout,” he explains. Several key things were incorporated into the floor plan: a large, open kitchen; breakfast room and family room area; an attractive office and library; and a dramatic two-story entryway. Architect Carl Day and builder Jerry Vouga brought the homeowner’s visions to life with a cherry wood-paneled office, great room with cathedral vault ceiling and gourmet kitchen. “Our favorite area is the kitchen and adjoining family room” he says. “It’s all so open with great views from the large windows overlooking the pool.” He says when they hosted parties, most often around the holidays, they could comfortably fit 100 guests. The couple did a major remodel about three years ago to expand the master suite, which offers private access to a tiled balcony overlooking the backyard. “We originally had another smaller bedroom and bath on the same side of the house as the master,” he explains. “But we completely gutted everything and combined the space.” Other changes were less dramatic, like enclosing an outdoor area that once opened to the porch to create an atrium. “You feel like you’re sitting in a greenhouse in there,” he says. The couple now resides full-time in Captiva, Florida, where they built a vacation home in 1998, but the homeowner admits selling the house will be bittersweet. “Florida is where our life is now, but we spent almost 25 years on Carrswold. It’s where we raised our two daughters, so it’s difficult to leave.”
7 Carrswold Drive ~ Clayton ~ $2,595,000 This inspired residence has been re-imagined to create a one-of-a-kind colonial. The two-story entry showcases a striking sight line to the pool. HOMEWORK]
DEAR HOMEWORK,
Love our house, but it’s looking dated, very ’90s to us. We would love any input in changing siding, windows, landscape or anything else to make it look more modern. It’s too white from October to April. We aren’t attached to anything—in fact, I hate that second-floor porch over the door. Any suggestions are welcome. Sincerely, —TRAPPED IN THE ‘90S
DEAR TRAPPED IN THE ‘90S,
Luckily, your home has many assets. It has a nice wide lot and is well framed by large trees. The classic ‘center hall Colonial’ is a look we can easily enhance, and your limegreen front door is a great starting point for a livelier color scheme. I think the problem with your house is not so much that it feels like ’90s, but that it is brought down by builder-grade details. The front porch and the center, second-floor windows are clumsily handled. The shutters for the arched windows and the less-than-lush landscaping also lower the tone of the whole presentation. You will notice I have rebuilt the porch with a more classical feel and included a bold, round window and eyebrow attic window. The arched ground-floor windows now have appropriate arched shutters, and I have added a second-level window in the garage wing. These architectural upgrades give the home a more timeless feel. The landscape enhancements include plantings to isolate the neighboring properties. A low evergreen hedge follows the curve of the circle drive and ties the whole façade together. Several flower beds add summer color, while teal shutters will add interest in the dead of winter. To my eyes, your house now looks like an elegant estate rather than just another home on a street. —HOMEWORK

STEPHANIE CONNELL
THE [ ON TOWN with... stephanie connell gladys manion real estate
by alexa beattie
2100 Dogtown walk | $299,000 Carefree & Convenient describe this updated 3BR/2.5 Ba end-unit townhome just minutes from Forest Park, Clayton & Downtown. Hardwood floors, granite & stainless kitchen opens to hearth room and walks out to deck, master suite with vaulted ceiling, luxury bath & custom closets. Drive-under garage with lots of storage. Contact Stafford Manion 314.280.4755 (this property is Broker’s personal residence)
Stephanie Connell says she loves St. Louis for its Midwestern values, and because it is home. She grew up in Town & Country in the house where her parents still live, and she now makes that city one of her areas of specialty. She took to real estate in 2002 after tiring of the pharmaceutical business. “There was too much travel involved, and I had young children,” she says. She has been an agent at Gladys Manion Real Estate ever since then, and last year, sold more than $15 million in homes throughout the central corridor.
town & country » WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT?
Wasabi Sushi Bar at Town & Country Commons for the St. Louis roll.
WHICH PARK/OUTDOOR SPACE DO YOU MOST ENJOY?
Longview Farm Park and the Clayton Road Trail. (I must have walked it 25 times when I was training for the Avon 39, The Walk to End Breast Cancer).
WHERE DO YOU GRAB A GOOD CUP OF COFFEE?
Starbucks at Mason and Clayton roads. The chai tea latte—skim milk, extra hot.
WHAT QUALITIES MAKE THIS A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD?
It’s close to everything—interstates, airport, green spaces. I also love the consistently pleasant curb-appeal.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE AREA?
The house I grew up in. It was a happy childhood; I had some great times there.
WHAT SETS TOWN & COUNTRY APART FROM OTHER AREAS IN ST. LOUIS?
Proud to be Locally Owned and Operated Since 1936
