from the editor's desk I came across an interesting survey conducted by OpenTable recently about how diners find menu items confusing these days. It’s of particular interest here, because when we launched Town&Style years ago I lobbied to add a ‘food-o-logy’ section to every dining review: it’s a short explanation of obscure terms diners will find at the featured restaurant. After all, you can’t expect everyone to know what a chiffonade of basil or orange supremes are. Turns out, most diners are confused about much of the terminology on menus. A burger is a burger, but how about gochujang or guanciale? If you don’t quite recall what these are, you are not alone. Even total foodies can’t be expected to know all the terms on modern-day menus (I still don’t understand sous vide). Chefs have become more experimental these days— and more international. So now, before choosing a dish, diners might have to wrap their minds around words that are sciencebased (molecular gastronomy), foreign (crudo) and technical (gratinated). I’m no food historian, but I wonder if it all started with the Pan-Asian trend and its cousin, fusion food. Then it got out of hand, and the next thing you know we’re all eating sriracha sauce on everything, with a side of kimchi to boot. More than half the OpenTable respondents reported being afraid to order a dish with unfamiliar ingredients. In contrast, 18 percent were real risk-takers who deliberately sought out new tastes in search of culinary adventure. Most puzzling, however, is the 74 percent who report feeling like they are wasting their money if they don’t like their meal—how do the other 26 percent feel?

DR. ENRICO STAZZONE WITH SCOLIOSIS PATIENT LISBETH GARCÍA FROM THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
COVER STORY
[RESCUE TEAM PEDIATRIC ORTHOPEDIC PROJECT by alexa beattie THE WATER ISN’T CLEAN, THE EQUIPMENT IS OLD, there are no sheets or pillows on the beds.
Hardly ideal conditions for a hospital, especially one where children need delicate and dangerous spine surgery. “It’s like going back 100 years,” says Dr. Madelyn Stazzone about pediatric treatment for the poor in the Dominican Republic. Stazzone is president and executive director of Pediatric Orthopedic Project (POP), which treats scoliosis (spine curvature) and other orthopedic problems in children in the Caribbean. Scoliosis is correctable, but in extreme form, it can cause death due to impaired lung and heart function. Although precise figures for how many are affected aren’t known, the need in this small nation is great since the gene pool is smaller on an island, Stazzone explains, so genetic predisposition may be amplified. The doctor took her first trip there after learning of the urgency in 2012. Since then, she and husband Dr. Enrico Stazzone—a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Mid-County Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine—and a 17-strong team of healthcare professionals (ICU doctors and nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians and technologists) have made the pilgrimage regularly. Going for a week once a year (more recently twice), they have carried out 41 free operations, trained local doctors, and provided the hospital with essential supplies. These include antibacterial soaps, instruments, wheelchairs and crutches, and the metal rod implants donated by DePuy Synthes Spine. “If we were performing these surgeries in the U.S., each one would cost $80,000,” Stazzone says. She notes that a recent collaboration with another organization, World Pediatric Project (WPP), brought patient Lisbeth García to the U.S. for treatment she otherwise would not have received. Under the best of circumstances, Dominican hospitals for the poor can be rudimentary, and healthcare generally is hard to come by. As an example, the children’s hospital in Santiago serves a geographical area of 500,000 people with, at most, six operating rooms, Stazzone says. Inhabitants of very rural, unrelentingly poor areas (called bateys) may never see a doctor in their lifetime. To add to the difficulties, POP often has to wrestle the Dominican government (hospitals are state-run), to garner any supplies it doesn’t bring. “There is no money there,” Stazzone says, citing hospitals’ lack of technology, medication and even food, which families have to supply. Nursing care is scarce, she says, and mothers often are the primary caretakers during the inpatient postoperative period. “They sleep beside their children in the bed,” Stazzone says. “It is hard to see.” The largest measure of POP’s success, Stazzone says, is that the Dominican doctors it has trained over the years have treated 62 impoverished patients without her team present. On Oct. 14, POP hosts its third annual Caribbean Gala at Grand Hall on Chouteau. All money raised will fund team travel expenses, supplies and ‘beautification’ projects. “We always like to give a little love to the hospital,” Stazzone says, referring to the bright refurbishments POP has overseen. One year, it provided 18 ceiling fans and completely rehabbed a surgical waiting room. Last year, it donated operating room lights and shelving, and outfitted a special ‘casting room’ for setting bones. “POP has been transformative,” she says.

[ TALKOF THETOWNS ] by bill beggs jr.
When responding to a house fire, firefighters first make sure all human occupants are safe and sound. They wear oxygen tanks to ensure they can thoroughly search a burning house for anyone who may have been overcome by smoke. They also have oxygen masks on the truck to treat any family member suffering smoke inhalation—but what about Fido? He’s family, too. Ladue’s firefighting finest now have three oxygen masks engineered specifically to fit over a muzzle and bring the breath of life back to the mutt. The masks were donated by the Invisible Fence franchise based at Kennelwood. Invisible Fence, of course, has made a business of keeping the dog in the yard and out of the street, electronically. But these masks are strictly old school … analog, that is. U.S. fire industry sources indicate that as many as 150,000 pets may die in fires every year, most from smoke inhalation. And the Invisible Fence people have embarked upon ‘Project Breathe,’ an effort to equip U.S. and Canadian fire stations with pet oxygen masks. And yes, feline fanciers—the masks are of different sizes and shapes, so one or the other could be used to revive a stricken cat, as well. Or a ferret. Even a cavia porcellus (a guinea pig). Grand Center is about to become even grander—a fabulous parking garage is to be built across from the Fox Theatre, and soon. For many, this will mean not having to be eagerly flagged into the parking lot of a nearby Chinese restaurant for the next really big shew (Ed Sullivan-speak for ‘show,’ for those of you too young to recall). Fox Associates will invest $9.1 million in the project, at 3637 Washington Blvd., to be completed by next April. The garage will accommodate 603 vehicles— and 20 bicycles—on five levels. Construction is set to start this month. To trim construction time, 570 precast pieces will be used. Driving lanes will be 4 feet wider than is typical so that you and your vehicle don’t have to feel claustrophobic negotiating your way up and in, then down and out. There will be two entrances on Washington and one in the alley that will separate the garage and Grandel Theatre. For those non-Chineserestaurant parkers, this may also mean no longer having to test, in a Range Rover, the parallel-parking prowess you may have lost since moving out of the city (and a Honda Civic).
in Laumeier’s Museum Circle, visible from the lower entrance parking lots. Mix (Americana) is a full-scale cement mixer. Polished and painted in a patriotic red, white and blue, the sculpture has been relieved of its mixing duty on the back of a truck and staged instead as a functional sundial. When viewers peer inside the hollow steel chamber, light gently reflects and refracts, creating an intricate web of shadows and shapes, giving splendor and mystery to the industrial barrel. Within the context of Laumeier’s green space, Mix (Americana) inspires discussion about the suburban landscape and the complex juncture of natural and manmade environments. The artwork is “a sly commentary on how we now orient ourselves in the landscape using the concrete constructions of the urban world,” says Marilu Knode, Laumeier’s executive director. Indeed, the juxtaposition of various artificial artworks … and those made with earth, wood and other all-natural ingredients … is what lends the park much of its charm. In 2015, Laumeier closed its first major capital

campaign, Sculpting the Future, culminating in the renovation of the late Henry and Matilda Laumeier’s donated estate house (1917) into the Kranzberg Education Lab and the construction of the adjacent Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center for exhibitions, programs and events. Laumeier’s 105 rolling, wooded acres have been part of the St. Louis County parks system since July 7, 1976. It’s getting closer to the day that trolley bells will again ring-ring-ring along a 2.2-mile route under construction from U. City to Forest Park. The ‘fleet’ of cars that will run on the Loop Trolley line are vintage vehicles that have been adopted from left coast cities that once had vibrant streetcar systems. Two trolleys that once ran on the George Benson Waterfront Streetcar Line in Seattle have arrived in St. Louis for starters. A third Seattle trolley was shipped to Iowa, where it will be renovated and refurbished, along with two Portland electric cars. The three retooled trolleys will be put into service here in spring 2017, according to Joe Edwards (pictured), who heads up our local trolley/transit development district. Edwards proudly points out that the cars have accoutrements like wood-paneled interiors and brass hardware. (All riders will need to complete the trolley’s turn-of-the(last)century look are flat-topped straw boaters for guys, bustles for gals.) Interestingly, the cars that ran in Seattle, manufactured between 1923 and 1956, first operated in Melbourne, Australia. The two former Portland trolley cars were designed to look like 1903
To mark its 40th anniversary, Laumeier Sculpture Park has installed Alexandre da Cunha’s 2013 work Mix (Americana). The large-scale piece is well-traveled, having been donated to Laumeier’s permanent collection by the Brazilian artist and CRG Gallery in New York following its exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) as the fifth MCA Plaza Project. models but actually were built in the 1990s for that city’s ‘vintage’ line. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that the intersection of DeBaliviere Avenue and Forest Park Parkway will remain closed a week or so longer for the last piece of track to be installed and the roadway to be reconfigured for efficient automobile flow. Also, during that interval the parkway will be closed to all but local traffic from Skinker to Des Peres and from Vandeventer to Kingshighway. Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Groves has launched Walker Leadership Institute, an initiative designed to build a bridge between faith and business. Not only do the religious leaders of today need to run their churches more like a business, but businesspeople need to pay closer attention to time-honored moral precepts, officials say. George and Carol Walker donated $1 million to found the institute, which will offer a Master of Arts in Community Leadership, among other degree and certificate programs. It aims to develop men and women for effective work with nonprofits and demonstrates the close relationship that has been forged between Eden and Webster University, which are situated on the north and south sides, respectively, of Lockwood Avenue. George Walker is a former board chair of the university trustees, while Carol is an alumna of Eden and presently a board member. The Rev. Steve Lawler, the institute’s founding director, has a CV worthy of this noble effort, serving as rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Ferguson and holding both an MBA from the Olin School of Business at W.U. and a Master of Sacred Theology from Yale Divinity School. Since 2004 his consulting firm has worked with corporate entities as diverse as Ingersoll Rand and BJC HealthCare. He has taught courses at W.U. in subjects ranging from leadership and organizational development to sustainability. Dr. David Greenhaw, Eden’s president, says the institute plans to bring in church leaders from around the country to lead seminars that address balancing noble efforts toward the greater good with sound business principles. Seminaries nationwide face declining enrollment coupled with large, aging campuses and have to find ways not only to remain relevant but also to retain financial stability, Greenhaw emphasizes. A glimpse at what’s going on around St. Louis and beyond.

Crown Center has a lot to celebrate these days. For one thing, the affordable housing complex for seniors has turned 50 this year. Then resident EDIE SOBEL was featured in the national magazine LeadingAge. Seeing a call for submissions about engaged seniors, the Crown Center folks submitted her story, and it was included with a handful of others from around the country.
THERE IS A STATE FARM COMMERCIAL that
causes me to pause every time I see it. In it, a man claims he will never get married, have kids or live in the suburbs, but you see him doing all the ‘nevers’ and being happy. Of course, State Farm is there to provide the insurance he needs to protect all those precious things. So what makes me look twice at this 30-second television spot? I could be that man, except when it comes to my list of ‘nevers,’ I’ve stuck to mine. You see, I’m a chicken when it comes to life. Things scare me. Anything that has the potential to cause any sort of harm is avoided. This includes: getting a tattoo (hepatitis), riding a motorcycle (permanent injury), and flying in small airplanes (apparently I need a flight attendant to protect me). You get the idea: my list is long and comprehensive. But for some reason, I’ve started to rethink some of it. And that’s how I found myself, with my brother Dennis, at Steel and Ink Tattoo Studio in South County, holding out my finger so ‘Jake’ could tattoo a semicolon on it. Yes, I will let you digest that for a minute. This middle-aged Clayton mom of two decided she should head down to Lemay Ferry and Highway 55 with her 64-year-old brother to get permanently inked. And no, I was not drunk; no, I did not lose a bet; and no, I don’t regret it. Actually, it was my brother who gave me the courage to cross a ‘never’ off my list. You see Dennis is somewhat of a badass, a guy you would want on your side in a bar fight. That said, I don’t think he has been in a fight since high school, and I can assure you, I’ve never been in one. He’s the guy I called when I was younger and needed an ‘adult’ to help me. Dennis owns a successful roofing company, is the father of five and grandfather of 12. So he’s not exactly the type you’d think would be hanging out at tattoo parlors. But when his friend passed away recently, he decided to get a tattoo in his honor. I saw it shortly thereafter and a voice in my head said, “Do it.” I try to avoid listening to that voice, but not this time. So, why a semicolon? The semicolon is my favorite punctuation mark. It causes you to pause, even though you know the sentence is not over. It also happens to be the symbol used to increase awareness for mental illness. If you’ve ever read one of my columns and thought, “She is a little nutty,” well you would be right. I have OCD. I know many people are embarrassed to admit mental health issues, but I’ve always thought: Would I be embarrassed if I was a diabetic? Anyhow, because my mind sometimes races, the semicolon is my reminder to pause and breathe. That’s not the end of the story, though. Apparently there are some people whose skin rejects tattoos. Hello, it’s me! My tattoo is now just an outline of a semicolon, somewhat faded and gray. No longer bold. It is strategically placed on the inside of my middle finger, where I can see it and no one else can. I will likely make Dennis go with me to get it touched up, but for now I feel like a bad ass with my washed-out tattoo. CONTACT PATTY AT PHANNUM@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM.

Congratulations to hometowner CYNTHIA ANN FLECK, who recently was named Mrs. Missouri. Good luck to her as she advances to the national contest later this summer in Reno, Nevada!
ADAM WAINWRIGHT WITH HIS FAMILY AND PRODUCER RODNEY WILSON, LEFT, AND DIRECTOR DAN STEADMAN, RIGHT
Two St. Louis women have collaborated on a book about death, dating and divorce titled, Suddenly Single After 50: The Girlfriends’ Guide to Navigating Loss, Restoring Hope, and Rebuilding Your Life. Authors MEG CRANE and BARBARA BALLINGER (formerly of St. Louis)—one widowed, the other divorced—deal with the challenges and opportunities of this new reality. The book is available at Left Bank Books.
We will have the chance to see ADAM WAINWRIGHT in a whole new light, come September: on the big screen! The St. Louis Cardinals player appears in a locally produced indie film, Proximity, released in Wehrenberg Theatres Labor Day weekend. Writer-director Dan Steadman has only kudos for the pitcher. “He’s so naturally funny, and he had pages and pages of dialogue, but he handled it like a pro. He was such a good sport, no pun intended!”

You may not know it, but St. Louis has become home to a thriving community of comic book artists, writers and illustrators. One of them is Kirkwood artist Rori de Rien, creator of popular online comic Tiny Pink Robots. T&S | Tell me about Tiny Pink Robots. RORI DE RIEN | It’s a semi-autobiographical comic I’ve been publishing since 2011. It’s humorous and whimsical, and it takes a little bit of license with reality. T&S | What made you start it? RDR | I had been underemployed. It was December, and I was wondering what I was going to do. I decided to take advantage of this forced free time and draw a comic strip every day for the next year. Even after I became fully employed again, I kept at it. T&S | What has the response been? RDR | Good! I crowdfunded to put the first year in print, and the response was great. One cool thing about doing an autobiographical comic is that you meet fans who automatically become friends because they already know all about you. It warms my heart. T&S | How long have you been drawing comics? RDR | Off and on my entire life, but I’ve been continually creating them since 2006. While pursuing a degree in graphic design from Columbia College in Chicago, I took an elective in making comics, and I ended up loving it!

T&S | What appeals to you about the medium? RDR | I love the combination of words and art and the relationships you can make between them. There’s no other medium like it. The creator is in control of the entire thing—it’s very personal. T&S | What are you working on now? RDR | My husband and I are working on pitches to publishing companies. We’d like to develop a larger work, like a graphic novel. We’re working on an adaptation of The Snow Queen, a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. It’s a cool story with a female protagonist—we think we can make her even more interesting and update the fantasy elements. T&S | How has the internet changed the industry? RDR | Comics is still kind of a boys club, and the internet has changed the game for women and other marginalized people wanting to break in. People now can build their fan base themselves. There’s no barrier to entry or anyone telling you you can’t do it. You just put something up, tell all your friends, and hopefully they’ll tell all their friends. T&S | Tell me about the St. Louis comics community. RDR | There are tons of people doing comics here. We have amateurs, as well as several professional, full-time comics writers. As a working artist, often you’re not working a lot, or income flow is sporadic, and St. Louis provides a nice lifestyle for not Read Tiny Pink Robots at a ton of money. With internet and telecommuting, you don’t have to live in someone’s closet in New York. Here you can be an artist, yet have a tinypinkrobots.com. house with a backyard.

To investigate and fix current inadequacies in mental health awareness and suicide prevention, especially on college campuses
MEET ALEX LINDLEY
by karyn meyer
OF SHREWSBURY | FOUNDER
Q| HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN THIS EFFORT? A| Since 2012. Q| WHAT MADE YOU INTERESTED IN THIS PARTICULAR CAUSE? A| In 2012, a good friend of mine took her own life. It was my group’s first real experience with suicide and
quite frankly, we were very hush-hush about it. She died, but we didn’t talk about why. It was tough as 19-yearolds to lose a friend; it was confusing and stressful on all of us, and we always wondered if we could have done more to prevent it. I started researching mental illness and suicide to figure out warning signs. And despite that, in June 2014, my best friend Ryan took his own life. This time around, I wasn’t going to grieve in the same way. I didn’t want to go through it alone. Ryan was the center of our friend group, and the center of many groups. He had some anxiety but was the happiest guy in the world. I was very vigilant about suicidal warning signs and still didn’t have any idea it was coming. So I wanted to figure out a way to get my friends and myself through this and came up with the idea to tell Ryan’s life story through a biopic.
Q| TELL ME HOW THE IDEA CAME TO BE PROJECT WAKE UP. A| I pitched the idea of making a documentary to my friends, knowing it was an ambitious project. They were
all so enthusiastic about it, and everyone has been heavily involved since the beginning. We quickly realized it could be about more than just us and Ryan’s life; we could use his story to promote mental health awareness. I had no clue how much it would cost to make the film, so we started by creating a short PSA video for a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of $10,000. We raised that in 20 hours and ended up with $35,000. With that, we got even more serious. A team member’s dad connected us with a friend who owns a production company in L.A., and he was incredibly helpful mapping out what we needed to do to get this made. From there, we hooked up with director Nate Townsend, who was born and raised in St. Louis. He knew of Ryan and, like us, wanted to make a film that really impacted people. We began filming a short last year to show people the quality of feature we could make given the proper funding. We received our nonprofit status last July, which has opened the doors to grants, donors, events, etc. Our first trivia night a few months ago raised $33,000 toward our goal of what’s needed to make a full feature-length film.
Q| IF YOU COULD DO ANYTHING FOR THE ORGANIZATION, WHAT WOULD IT BE? A| Honestly, I want to just save one life. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to truly know if we achieve that, but no matter how far this gets, it’s a remarkable position to be in. We want to install Wake Up chapters at every college campus across the nation, and we want the documentary to be shown at college orientations and during mental health awareness week. We’ve gotten feedback that we’re helping people already, so I don’t want to stop. We have a unique opportunity to make this film and get it where it needs to go. Young people are waiting for something like this.

IN THE WORDS OF FELLOW VOLUNTEER DANNY KERTH: “Alex is one of those people that shows you the difference between thinking and doing. I still catch myself surprised at times when I look back on the past year and a half and how his ‘farfetched idea’ has evolved into something so tangible. For Project Wake Up to have the prominence it does now, it needed someone who truly believed in it from its beginning. We’re all there now, but Alex was the first. There’s something about him and his passion that got everyone else to buy in.”

celebrity couldn’t be more serious. Kyles lost his mother to cancer last summer, and ever since 2014, he has worked toward establishing a state-of-the-art women’s health center at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, where she was treated. The Rosetta Boyce Kyles Women’s Pavilion, to be named for his mother, takes up the fifth and sixth floors of the hospital on Clayton Road and treats a wide range of women’s health issues from reproductive conditions and cancers to diabetes, depression, obesity and sports injury. The pavilion also serves as a resource, providing space for support groups and an auditorium for lectures. According to SSM Health, it will be one of the most comprehensive health centers in St. Louis. “It’s a beautiful facility, and I’m very proud to have my mother’s name on it,” Kyles says. The hospital was eager to name the pavilion after a patient, but also someone who represented St. Louis values. Kyles’ mother worked in the FergusonFlorissant School District for 25 years and raised him and his sister Sharita alone. On Oct. 22, the third annual Evening with Cedric the Entertainer and Friends gala— taking place at Peabody Opera House—will raise funds for the hospital and feature a very special guest: This year, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin will join Kyles for an evening of music and laughter. “We don’t want to beat people over the head with solemnness,” says Kyles. “We want the event to be uplifting ... a celebration of life.” BOYCE KYLES AND SON CEDRIC KYLES For the third year running, ROSETTA AT THE 2014 CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER AND FRIENDS GALA. the event will be presented by World Wide Technology Foundation and the Steward Family Foundation. “We are so grateful for the community support of women’s health services and are honored to be part of paying homage to Cedric’s mother, who fought so bravely,” says David Steward, chairman and co-founder of World Wide Technology. “We are thrilled to be back for our third year and look forward to an unforgettable performance by Aretha.” Franklin, whose career spans six decades, is known the world over for classics like ‘I Say a Little Prayer’ and ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.’ Kyles also is renowned for his career in film and TV and for his stand-up routines. He stresses that Franklin was quick to say ‘yes’ to his invitation and will perform for about an hour. “I am so excited to have such an icon accompany me,” Kyles says. “I have so much R.E.S.P.E.C.T for everything she does.” Kyles adds that the event will include an act by another comedian (to be named later) and an uplifting appearance by women cancer survivors. SSM Health is a Catholic, nonprofit health system serving the comprehensive health needs of communities across the Midwest. Its 525-bed teaching hospital on Clayton Road specializes in highrisk obstetrics.

THIS IS THE NEW LOCATION of the former Athlete Eats on Cherokee Street. The concept is the same: healthy, entirely gluten-free, fresh meals that are made-to-order with as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. It’s open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner (closing at 8 p.m. most days). Service is very personal and friendly, like you’ve entered a brotherhood of sustainability and responsible eating. The environs are clean and fresh (although the open kitchen can leave your clothes smelling like a cooktop). As you might imagine, cold-pressed juices and smoothies rule here, and the tea and coffee selections (Kaldi’s) are impressive. The Beety (beet, apple, parsley and ginger) was refreshing and a lot of beverage for $6. I’m always impressed when a restaurant focuses on a small, cohesive menu, which is the case here. The place offers delicious proteins to add to your choice of ‘base’ (wraps, rice bowls, salads or eggs) and four different flavoring styles (Asian, Southern, Mediterranean and Latin) that finish off the dish. straight-up vegetarian (or mofu), or choose one of the animal proteins, which were top-notch. That’s probably because these are premium and mostly local: Deppe Farms bacon and pulled pork from Washington, Missouri; Mofu from St. Louis; and free-range chicken and grass-fed beef from Jones Farm in North Carolina. The salmon is organic Faroe Island fish. We started with a cauli-rice bowl with house-smoked salmon, which is a base of cauliflower put through a ricer to yield rice-size bits of the vegetable—clever and tasty. The salmon was served smoked and cold in large chunks atop the cauliflower rice. The style we chose for this dish was ‘Southern,’ which meant the following were added to and tossed with our protein: tiny sweet potato cubes, Southern greens, onions and sunflower seeds. The dominant flavors were bitter greens and lightly smoked fish. My favorite was the grass-fed shredded beef over quinoa with Latin flavoring mixed in. That meant black beans, corn kernels, jalapenos and tiny bits of pineapple interspersed with the delicate quinoa and the

scrumptious beef (which was a good-sized portion and perfectly spiced). Don’t pass up the Cauli-Tots ($4), little puffs of mashed cauliflower, whipped egg and cheese. They’re like cauliflower muffins and quite delicious dipped in ketchup. Also terrific were the waffles ($4), light squares made with a vanilla-cinnamon batter offered with either butter and maple syrup or PBJ. As a handheld option, we tried a whole wheat wrap (the only menu item containing gluten) filled with pulled pork and Asian fixings: edamame, shredded cabbage, carrots, red peppers and sesame oil flavoring. The pork was excellent, and all ingredients were fresh and worked well together. Next came a scrambled eggs base done Mediterranean style with diced beets, carrots, chickpeas, red peppers and almonds. Our protein was smoked salmon. This blend was less successful, as some of the ingredients just didn’t work well with the eggs (like beets). But in general, the dishes at Revel Kitchen are surprisingly satisfying, in both taste and satiety.

THE HEAT OF JULY—the perfect time for barbecues and pool parties. It’s also the perfect time for sangria, a refreshing beverage made with macerated fruit. Can you believe sangria has been around for more than 2,000 years? Since the Romans mixed wine with water to sanitize it for the long-distance travel of Roman legions. Its modern form originated in Spain and Portugal and spread to the Caribbean and South and Central America through colonial conquest. Recipes vary worldwide, depending on the local climate and culture. Sangria blanca is the white wine version, known in South America as clerico. In southern Spain, they make a variety with white wine, peaches and nectarines called zurra. Traditionally, fresh fruit is macerated with sugar, a distilled spirit (traditionally brandy) and blended with red wine, which gives the drink its name: sangre, from the Spanish word for blood. The beauty of sangria is that it can be made in large batches. Mix it in a punch bowl for more intimate indoor gatherings and cocktail parties, or in a supersized batch for an outdoor blowout. The fruit base also can be frozen and thrown into a cooler for a floating excursion or camping trip. Just add wine and fizz when you’re ready.

Douro or Vihno Verde). For the fizz, add one bottle citrus soda or ginger ale. Stir together, ladle over ice and enjoy. VARIATIONS: For fall or winter, add a pinch of baking spices or mulled wine spices to the fruit base. In summer, add muddled fresh lavender or rosemary. For tropical themes, substitute mango, papaya, kiwi and pineapple for the peaches and nectarines. Also consider substituting tequila or dark rum for the brandy. For richer red sangrias, replace white sugar with molasses or brown sugar.

There’s not enough space here to do justice to this stirring documentary, to speak to all the big questions it poses. At the beginning, the renowned cellist says, “I’m always trying to figure out who I am and where I fit into the world.” This is the story of a group that Ma formed in 2000 of 50 disparate musicians from all corners of the globe. Many come from hard, war-torn places. For all of them, music has been the palliative. For all, music has prompted questions about culture and roots, separateness and togetherness, and the power of the human spirit, and of music to move it. “Can a piece of music stop a bullet ... or feed a person who is hungry?” someone asks, as a clarinet soars clean and clear over Damascus bombings. By the end, we feel that it is—that, amid this extraordinarily beautiful melding of peoples and sound, xenophobia must crumble. “There is no East and West. It’s just a globe,” says Wu Man, the world’s premier pipa player (Chinese lute) from Hangzhou, who, like Ma, believes that creativity lives at the intersection of cultures. “I’m Yo-Yo Ma,” the Chinese-American born in Paris says to an audience as he clutches the hand of an Iranian kamancheh player. “And this is my brother.”

as a 20-week pregnancy. They can cause unmanageable menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), which can bring on anemia, and in some cases, affect a woman’s fertility. According to Gretchen Foltz, M.D., interventional radiologist at Washington University Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, a fibroid is an abnormal, non-cancerous growth of muscle tissue. It is not to be confused with a cyst, which is a fluid-filled mass that can grow in or on the ovaries. More likely to occur than a single, large fibroid are multiple fibroids of about 2 centimeters in diameter. “They tend to max out in size eventually because they can’t get enough blood to grow bigger and bigger,” Foltz explains. Fibroid symptoms include heavy and extended menstrual bleeding, bleeding between periods, frequent urination if the growth presses against the bladder, bloating and pelvic heaviness (called ‘bulk symptoms’), constipation and sometimes pain down the legs. “Heavy periods that require numerous pads a day can be a terrible embarrassment,” says Jennifer Gould, M.D., also a Washington University interventional radiologist. “A woman may feel she can’t go out in public, and her quality of life is compromised.” Effective treatments are available, however, ranging from control via oral contraceptives (often doctors’ first line of defense) to hysterectomy, a major surgery with a six- to eight-week recovery time. “Some women have strong psychological ties to the uterus,” Gould says, in which case she considers a uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), a solution that blocks the blood supply to the fibroid. During this procedure, tiny particles of medical-grade plastic are delivered via catheter to the arteries that supply blood to the fibroid. The catheter is inserted into the femoral artery in the upper thigh and guided through other arteries into the uterus by X-ray. The procedure takes less than 90 minutes and is conducted under conscious sedation. Recovery time is about a week. Gould stresses, however, that because of the risk of damage to the uterine muscle as it repairs from UFE, women should wait a year before becoming pregnant. When fibroids are affecting a woman’s fertility, Foltz suggests a myomectomy (the surgical removal of fibrous growths) as a good course of action because doctors can directly target the fibroids they deem most problematic. “A myomectomy still is considered major surgery,” Foltz says. “But it leaves the uterus intact.” Trials for other treatments currently are underway. Foltz says the exact cause of fibroids is unclear. The condition is more prevalent in AfricanAmerican women, she notes, and there may be a genetic factor. Hormones also play a part, and may be the reason why women are less prone after menopause (when hormone levels taper). She explains that the incidence of fibroids is about 20 percent for women in their 20s, rising to 40 percent for women in their 40s. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR UTERINE FIBROIDS, CALL 314.362.2900 OR VISIT MIR.WUSTL.EDU/UFE. PICTURED ON THE COVER: DR. GRETCHEN FOLTZ AND DR. Women are amazing. They bear children, thrive in the workplace, run the home, and get to wear fabulous shoes and makeup while doing it. But being born without that Y chromosome also has a few negatives—like hot flashes, the possibility of ovarian and breast cancers, and sometimes foot pain from those fabulous shoes.

“Sometimes patients will say it feels like their face is in an oven,” says Terri Bauer, nurse practitioner of women’s health at Saint Louis Associates in OB-GYN. Hot flashes are among the first symptoms of menopause. While that may be common knowledge, doctors say the exact scientific reason behind the sensation isn’t completely known. But generally speaking, hormone changes cause temperature changes in the body. Then the part of the brain that perceives those fluctuations responds with flushing and sweating. “It’s scary and stressful to see changes happening in one’s body, and the job of the physician is of course to help people navigate that change,” says OB-GYN Dr. Jodie Rai of Women’s Healthcare Consultants. So, experts suggest going to see a professional if the hot flashes get too uncomfortable to bear. “I have had patients that have come in and said, ‘I’m getting at least two or three in an hour. I just can’t function.’ Because when you get one of these, you pretty much just have to stop what you’re doing,” Bauer says. The severity, frequency and duration of the symptoms may depend on a variety of factors. Family history and race each play a role. And lifestyle factors like inactivity, smoking or obesity can worsen the symptoms. Naturally, a woman may also experience more hot flashes during hotter times of the year. “We can’t make menopause stop, it’s part of the life cycle. But there are ways to treat symptoms,” Rai says. The most common treatment is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It is effective, but health professionals are careful not to give it to everyone after a study found it might increase the risk for stroke, blood clots and some types of cancer. While some in the medical community consider the study flawed, it still led to a re-examination of when to prescribe hormones. It also has led to the increased use of more natural remedies, such as soy, ginseng, flaxseed and red clover. Anti-seizure and anti-depression medications may also help women who aren’t good candidates for HRT. With so many options available, experts urge women not to hesitate in seeking help if menopausal symptoms are affecting their quality of life. Statistics show while most women experience hot flashes, only about 20 percent of those seek treatment. “Most women, try to endure, that’s just how we are,” Bauer says. “And sometimes it just gets to the point where you can’t take it anymore. So I always tell patients, don’t try and suffer through that. If there’s something out there that can help you, then let’s definitely move toward that.”
rate is only 35 to 40 percent. “Right now we don’t have a way to detect ovarian cancer early, and there’s a question about whether that’s even possible based on the biology of the tumor,” says Dr. Katherine Fuh, gynecologic oncology specialist with Washington University Physicians. But researchers are working to learn more about the cancer in hopes of finding better ways to prevent and treat it. Most of the research involves the role genetics play in developing the disease. Some of that research revolves around the BRCA gene mutation, much publicized in recent years by Angelina Jolie. Those with the mutation may be more than 40 percent more likely to develop the disease. So, if the mutation is detected, they may opt to have their ovaries removed after having children, which nearly wipes out the chance of developing the cancer. While the gene is a good predictor of breast and ovarian cancers, it applies only to around 15 percent of ovarian cancer patients. Experts hope to pinpoint other gene abnormalities that serve as early predictors. “There are new things cooking,” says Dr. Francisco Xynos, SLUCare gynecologist and oncologist. “We already are in that field, but it’s going slowly.” Doctors also are trying to find better ways to cure advanced cases. Some methods include bathing the tumor bed in chemo and making sure every bit of the tumor is removed during a single surgery. Doctors also urge women to empower themselves to find the disease early by getting checked out every year and talking to their physician about anything out of the ordinary. That advice is especially important for women in their 50s and 60s, as the median age for an ovarian cancer diagnosis is 61. “Don’t brush off any symptoms that may seem unusual,” says Fuh, who tells her patients to closely watch what their body is telling them. Researchers also have found that taking a birth control pill for at least 10 years lowers the chance of developing ovarian cancer. Having children also can decrease the risk. Interestingly, many doctors say women should not worry about baby powder use, despite recent lawsuits claiming the product may cause cancer. While some studies have suggested a link between the two, some in the medical community consider those studies flawed. “I doubt this will stand the scrutiny of science. There is no scientific evidence to prove [the powder] causes ovarian cancer,” Xynos says. Doctors encourage women to focus on family history, as that is one factor proven to have an effect on the likelihood of cancer. And since there is no screening procedure for ovarian cancer, like the mammogram for breast cancer, knowing your risk factors could help save your life.
TOWN TALK
foot health Any woman with a love of high heels probably understands the saying ‘no pain, no gain” all too well. But as boomers age, they are demanding less pain, and shoe designers are starting to understand that beauty and comfort can walk hand-in-hand. “[Shoe] makers have realized they can make heels that are a little smarter for the everyday working woman,’” says podiatrist Dr. Meredith Stuart of Snyder Stuart Podiatry Center. Local designer Joanne Smith of Crowne Comforteur is among those in the industry paving the way for smarter footwear. She says her brand is growing rapidly at its Chesterfield store, and in online sales across the country. “We believe women should just automatically get that comfort feature and also get the fashion element they need,” Smith says. She explains that her shoes have an insole with give that doesn’t compress. “Women are really coming back because they like that feel-good feature,” Smith says. And doctors say wearing good shoes is one step toward better foot health. Good shoes can help the falling arches and thinning fat pads on the feet that come with age. “We may not be wearing the right type of shoes to support our foot or to cushion our foot by the end of the day depending on what we’re doing,” Stuart says. But age isn’t the only factor. Pregnancy, weight gain and exercise all can affect the foot and what it needs to stay healthy. Sometimes those needs include supportive shoes, inserts, stretches or injections. Foot experts like Stuart also are trying new, innovative techniques like laser and shockwave therapy to treat tendonitis and inflammation. With all the different options, Stuart says it’s not smart to wait to see a doctor when you’re in pain on a regular basis. “If you jump on something a little bit sooner, when it’s simpler, we can get a handle on it,” she says. Especially because foot pain may lead to inactivity, which may contribute to other health problems, Stuart advises seeing the doctor if nagging foot pain lasts longer than a month. An individual assessment also may help prevent you from buying over-thecounter options that may not be the right remedy for your specific problem, she says. Stuart does, however, suggest finding some sort of comfort insert if you know you’ll be wearing uncomfortable shoes for a special occasion. With a little tweaking, great shoes don’t have to come with pain. No heel-loving woman should need to ditch her favorite shoes altogether. “No!” confirms Stuart. “That’s not real life.”

[ WHAT WE LOVE IN …] NEW & NIFTY by dorothy weiner | photo by bill barrett
IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP UP WITH ALL THE NEW PRODUCTS OUT THERE, but it sure is fun trying! Especially when lines we love launch something new. That is exactly why women rush out to get all those GWPs (gifts with purchase)—and why cosmetics companies offer them. Here are a few cool newbies we discovered.
ÉMINENCE VITASKIN TARGETED TREATMENTS
This Hungarian line is known for all-natural, organic products that smell delicious. It has three new creams to treat facial problems naturally: Bright Skin, Firm Skin and Clear Skin. The first uses turmeric and licorice root to prevent discoloration; the second has a retinol alternative and botanical hyaluronic acid to slow the signs of aging; and the third uses tea tree oil and cucumber to control blemishes.
MOLTON BROWN DEWY LILY OF THE VALLEY & STAR ANISE
This British line offers wonderful scents in body lotions and gels. This new one has a subtle, flowery scent that is oh-so-very-English. BODY LOTION, $42 BATH & SHOWER GEL, $30 AVAILABLE AT NORDSTROM AND NEIMAN MARCUS
$65 EACH AVAILABLE AT BUYNATURALSKINCARE.COM
ALGENIST REVEAL
From a San Francisco line, this is a color-correcting powder that gives you luminous skin by blurring the appearance of pores and fine lines/wrinkles. $38, AVAILABLE AT SEPHORA
KIEHL’S NIGHTLY REFINING MICRO-PEEL CONCENTRATE
From a brand we trust, this is one of the hottest product launches of the season. It uses quinoa husk extract in an at-home, overnight treatment that offers cell turnover similar to a glycolic peel. $54, AVAILABLE AT NEIMAN MARCUS AND SAKS FIFTH AVENUE
DAVINES OI HAND BALM
This popular hair brand has launched a body line, including a restorative hand lotion. Enriched with roucou oil, which comes from the annatto plant, it supposedly has antioxidant properties that can reduce the signs of aging. $20, AVAILABLE AT DAVINES.COM

[T&S HOME by karyn meyer
THE ORIGINAL HOME ON RADNOR ROAD in Huntleigh sits atop a hill, a spot that befits this 10,000-square-footplus mansion on 3 private acres. Attractive features like the lush, landscaped grounds, saltwater pool, infrared sauna room and imported English wet bar only add to its appeal. “You don’t hear anything in the backyard, let alone see anything,” says Stephanie Bahn. She moved into the house, which is owned by her fiance, Ken Poteet, in 2013. The original structure was designed in 1939 and expanded by 7,000 square feet in 2005. “When I moved in, we did a major overhaul,” Bahn says. They started by painting and redoing the hardwood floors on the main level. “The floors were the original herringbone design, and we refinished them in a dark coffee stain,” she says.

“We loved it so much, we’re in the process of redoing them everywhere!” Other improvements include new carpeting, updated light fixtures, a Sonos whole-house sound system and state-of-the-art surveillance system. They also finished the basement, which now houses a theater and game room. Bahn jokes that her two children, age 10 and 8, have no need to leave home for entertainment. “We have an upstairs game room, as well, with a pool table, arcade and bocce ball, and they have a private third-floor playroom,” she says. “They love being outside all year long. They are on their sleds at the first sign of snow!” The grounds have been meticulously restored, and the outdoor covered porch is a favorite gathering place, especially in the fall. The main family gathering place, however, is the ‘green
room’ in the attached pool house. “It’s a really warm, inviting room with a lot of natural sunlight,” she says. Bahn’s personal favorite is the master suite. “You can see every part of the backyard from its windows,” she says. The spa-like bath with heated floors and a soaking tub and the room’s nearly 30-foot cathedral ceilings add to the overall grandeur of the private estate. The home’s size and floor plan make it perfect for parties, and Bahn notes that a tremendous amount of consideration went into making the house a place for entertaining. “The HVAC system was designed to accommodate all the French doors in the great room being open, and because of the full-house generator, you can host a concert and not be worried about power,” she says.

MAXIMIZE YOUR WATERING»
In the extreme heat of summer, it can become a major chore to keep your lawn and garden looking lush. When there’s no chance of rain in sight, it’s tempting to reach for the water hose, but before you do, consider these water conservation tips to get the most from your effort and keep waste at a minimum.

MULCH
Central West End | $400,000 4 Bedroom | 2 Full and 1 Half Baths
Adding a layer of mulch to your beds, containers and borders is a great way to retain moisture in the garden. Up to 70 percent of water can evaporate from the soil on a really hot day. Mulch is an excellent barrier to cool the soil and keep the moisture where you want it. It also helps hold back weeds that might steal moisture. Look for coarse mulch that will allow water to get down through to the soil, and layer it on about 2 inches deep.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLANTS Get a leg up on watering by picking grass and other vegetation that is suited to your climate and doesn’t need a lot of water. Bermuda grass is a good droughttolerant variety. It goes dormant during a drought, and when it gets water, it perks back up again quickly. Zoysia is another good drought-tolerant choice. Lantana, salvia, lavender and coneflower all are perfect for a flowerbed that’s a little on the dry side.
4259 Maryland Avenue
Clayton
When the heat is at its worst in the afternoon, it’s tempting to cool your grass off with a light watering. Resist the temptation! When heat is high, water can evaporate even before it has a chance to actually reach the roots of your grass and plants. And think of this: Shallow watering encourages unhealthy, shallow rooting. It’s better to water deeply once or twice a week early in the morning when the temperatures are still cool. Aim for about an inch of water. If you use a sprinkler hooked to a garden hose, it may be a good idea to set out a cup nearby to measure how long it takes to reach an inch of water. Once you know what that is, set a timer each time you water so you know when the plants have had enough. It’s too easy to turn the water on and forget!
