from the editor's desk True, the weather has been oppressive, but I actually have something positive to say about St. Louis in July: It might just be better than July in Boulder. That’s right; I just returned from Colorado and, I don’t know whether it’s the elevation or the cloudless skies, but the heat there felt more oppressive. Temperatures were in the 90s every day (which locals confirmed is pretty much standard for this time of year), and while all-day sun is nice, it also is relentlessly hot, especially in a town that eschews air conditioning. (I think folks there simply refuse to admit discomfort of any kind.) But that part shouldn’t come as a surprise. This is a place where hiking, biking and climbing are a way of life, and selfimposed hardship is a badge of honor. I was told by one resident that fitness is so common, “being an Ironman here is no big deal.” It is a town of Subarus and sandals. Healthy living is its culture, and to its credit, that has spawned some pretty impressive products, including ‘healthy’ soda (Izze), squeezable nut butter packets (Justin’s) and ‘green’ shoes (Crocs). Of course there are downsides to a life of extreme activity. For one thing, there was an inordinately large number of people in arm slings—the casualties of mountain sports? And then there’s the whole air conditioning thing. You can’t very well enjoy a dinner out when a place relies on open doors and windows for ventilation and there is none. So bring on the St. Louis summer: We may not have mountains to look at, but we have pretty consistently cool indoor spaces. And there’s no shame in wanting to hunker down in them—or in admitting when the summer sun has you beat.

COVER STORY
[OPEN TO ALL THE MAGIC HOUSE by karyn meyer IT’S HARD NOT TO FEEL THE MAGIC when you step inside the children’s museum on Kirkwood Road. Its name, after all, is The Magic House. The high-pitched tinkling of the musical instruments and little bodies scrambling up a giant beanstalk welcome you to a place where all children can explore, play and learn. The combination of education and community is what attracted president Beth Fitzgerald to the museum 36 years ago, and she’s stayed ever since. She wants as many children as possible to experience the magic. “The museum has two sides, public and educational,” she says. Fitzgerald explains that from the beginning, its founders decided to not have public hours in the morning in order to focus solely on curriculum-enriching field trip programs for schools, especially those that don’t have funding for them. Last year, The Magic House hosted 60,000 field trips, about half of those free of charge. The ultimate goal, Fitzgerald says, is to provide free visits to all area schools with a Title 1 designation (those that receive federal funding for disadvantaged students) and those with 50 percent or more free or reduced lunch students. This focus on the underserved has always been a top priority, she notes. “Our goal from day one has been to make sure everyone has the opportunity to visit, because it’s the right thing to do,” she says. Last year, in an attempt to make the community more aware of these efforts and gain support, The Magic House started a named initiative called Access for All. “These words are the essence of the museum,” Fitzgerald says. “We’re not just a family attraction. We have a very serious focus on learning and providing for children who need access.” During the summer months, the museum hosts a free night for all branches of the St. Louis Public and County Library. For the St. Louis City library branches, it provides transportation to and from library sites and gives a free book to each attendee. “It’s an important connection with the library’s reading program and also a way for us to engage children in the community in learning outside our walls,” Fitzgerald says. The museum also gives all foster families and Big Brothers and Big Sisters free memberships and hosts complimentary nights for children with special needs and their parents. Aside from the children having the run of the museum, Fitzgerald says it’s a good way for parents to connect with others in similar circumstances. “Research shows that underserved children don’t get many opportunities to play, so we take our responsibility to help with that very seriously,” she says. “Coming to the museum will be a lifelong memory for them.” To receive support for its free educational programs and events, The Magic House hosts an annual gala. This year, The Magic Ball: A Royal Affair will be held Oct. 14 at Peabody Opera House. The theme correlates with the museum’s traveling exhibit, ‘Kings, Queens and Castles’ in partnership with the World Chess Hall of Fame, a display that opens at the museum Oct. 1. Co-chairs Linda Hunter and Aisling Leonard explain that this year’s goal is to raise funds specifically for the Access for All initiative. “The Magic House wants all children to experience hands-on learning and make memories with their peers and families,” Hunter says. “Without community support, The Magic House wouldn’t be one of the best children’s museums in the country and a true gem for our city.”

PATTY d e h s a e unl BY PATTY HANNUM
I’VE BEEN RESEARCHING MY FAMILY’S GENEALOGY. It’s been interesting, but I got stuck
on my dad’s side. His grandfather, Pat Fitzgerald, immigrated from Ireland via New York in 1862, and that’s where the trail ends. As you can imagine, many Pat Fitzgeralds came to the U.S. via Ellis Island in the aftermath of the Irish potato famine. In the back of my mind, I thought a trip to Ellis Island might help determine which Pat Fitzgerald was mine. Knowing a trip was not in my future, I decided instead to visit the Ellis Island in Missouri, where I would find nothing about my family, but it would be funny and I would spend the rest of this column entertaining you with interesting facts, or perhaps a lot of fiction, about my family. Anyway, how did I know there was an Ellis Island in Missouri, given my inclination to stay within a 5-mile radius of my home? My friend Ken is the new executive director of The Audubon Center at Riverlands. While we had a cup of coffee, he talked about his new job and used words like ‘birds,’ ‘wildlife’ and ‘conservation.’ I was zoning out when he mentioned there were islands in the Mississippi River, one called Ellis. A story was born! I decided to drive out to Ellis Island, but since I would be venturing out of my safe zone and heading into nature, I needed to bring some personal security, which is how my husband found himself driving me to West Alton. Carey likes to bird-watch. Periodically over breakfast he will announce, “There is a yellow finch in the backyard.” I am never quick enough to see it, so he could just be saying it to drive me crazy. Anyway, I promised him that we would see lots of birds in their natural habitat. After a 20-minute drive, we found ourselves at The Audubon Center at Riverlands, which is located off Highway 367 before the Clark Bridge to Alton. The center overlooks Ellis Bay, which is where you find the island. A tour provides information about the Mississippi River habitat, and birds like bald eagles, white pelicans and trumpeter swans. A quick trip on an access road brought us to Ellis Island, which reminded me very much of a drop-off point in a Naked and Afraid episode. There is nothing on this island except nature. No trash, no people and the only noise is the hum of the cars traveling over the Clark Bridge. After a short walk across the island, you are standing in the Mississippi River. It’s right there— no barricades, fences or anyone to warn you away. So, I did what anyone would do and put both hands straight into the Mighty Mississippi, pretending I didn’t notice the dead fish washed up on shore. I was in a part of our city where time has stood still. You should check it out, if just for a walk, to bird-watch or put your hands in the river. Ken says it is an amazing place to watch water fowl migrate in the fall. Here’s what I do know: It was a great way to spend an afternoon, and while I learned nothing about my ancestors, I did learn that cactuses grow in Missouri. CONTACT PATTY AT PHANNUM@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM.

Quigley, a Florida State student, is the 2015 steeplechase national champ and a nine-time All-American. Also a onetime model, she is the daughter of Gaylerd and Ann Quigley of Kirkwood.

male Athlete of the Year at the
14th annual Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year awards in Los Angeles. Prior to this honor, Tatum had been named Gatorade's National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. The award is based not only on athletics, but also on academics and character. Tatum will attend Duke University in the fall. Pictured: Tatum with female Athlete of the Year Sydney McLaughlin
After 11 years in clothing merchandising with brands like Gap and American Eagle, Clayton H.S. grad ('94) DANIEL SHAPIRO is launching his own athletic-wear line Aug. 1, Fourlaps. It "combines functionality and form, all while being accessible," he says. Although Shapiro now lives in NYC, the line has ties to local organizations, including Saint Louis Fashion Fund and STL-Style apparel company. Prices are $24.50 to $69.50 for the online-only (fourlaps.com) tees, shorts, hoodies and sweats.

O’Leary has been involved with since 2006, is the leading champion for the American opera scene. He succeeds former board chair Frayda Lindemann, VP of the Metropolitan Opera.

[ TALKOF THETOWNS ] by bill beggs jr. A little less than two years ago, Michael Brown, 18, was shot and killed by a Ferguson police officer. The officer was white, and Brown, unarmed, was black. St. Louis became the focal point of national attention and the watershed of the Black Lives Matter movement. Response to the tragedy was unprecedented, with rioters in Ferguson and on South Grand Boulevard smashing shop windows. These were boarded up and then later transformed by amateur and professional artists into works that make a strong statement of hope, healing and unity. One includes an image of the Arch, ripped from the earth but formed by white and black arms clasped at the top. An observer noted that the messages ranged from the spiritual to the practical. So when the windows were replaced, what became of the plywood art? Most was saved and will be on exhibit at COCA and five other locations throughout the metro. On Aug. 27, COCA marks its 30th season in U. City’s Millstone Gallery with the exhibit Outside In: Paint for Peace. The messages encouraging positive change are needed just as much today, if not more, than they were then. Outside In will remain at Millstone through Oct. 30, as well as at the Missouri History Museum, UMSL, and two other locations at about the same time. The galleries at The Sheldon will feature a collection of the panels from Oct. 7 to Nov. 19. A new amusement park has opened in Chesterfield, with an emphasis on water features. For dogs. It’s called Canine Cove and was opened earlier this month by Petropolis Pet Resort. Could we possibly spoil our four-
legged furry friends any more? First there were gourmet dinners and frozen treats, now Canine Cove ... which features more than 30 squirty and splashy elements, including a paw-shaped splash pad, water umbrella, water arches, water chasers and bubbling canine hydrant. (Self-cleaning?) According to the American Pet Products Association, our spending on pets has increased nearly four-fold since 1994, from $17 billion to $63 billion last year. We’re all for dogs having a quality entertainment experience, and more and more communities are setting aside acreage for dogs to romp and frolic off the leash. More power to the mutts, I say, but if you plan to visit Canine Cove, I add a caveat about your ride home in the car: Wet. Dog. Smell. Muggles just wouldn’t understand. But those who waited for hours in line awaiting the premiere of the latest Harry Potter movie certainly would. St. Louis County Library is celebrating Harry Potter this summer in a big way in anticipation of beloved author J.K. Rowling’s newest release, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, on July 31. Throughout the month, patrons were asked to predict how it all would turn out for entry into a drawing taking place Aug. 1 at each branch. Winners will take home a copy of the new book ... which they will not have to return to the library. All month, SLCL branches have been hosting programs celebrating the precocious, odd, gifted child, his friends and more than one nemesis through game nights, crafts, trivia contests, costume competitions and more. All open branches will feature displays of Harry Potter books, of which there will never be enough, kids and adults of all ages will contend. Quidditch, anyone?
CHESTERFIELD

They joined the cavalry at Jefferson Barracks to conquer the American frontier. And a vivid historical exhibit at Jefferson Barracks Park that ran from March 2015 through May this year brought these men and their mission to life, so much so that St. Louis County Parks was acknowledged with an Award of Merit for the exhibit by the American Association for State and Local History. JB’s was one of 63 national awards this year honoring people, projects, exhibits and publications. Courageous and Faithful: The Cavalry at Jefferson Barracks exhibit included a Sioux war club given to a Native American agent by Chief Red Cloud himself. There also was a Grimsley saddle used by the earliest cavalry soldiers and a buffalo coat for the coldest climates. Visitors were able to engage with hands-on activities, videos and interactive touch screens while discovering how St. Louis came honestly by its moniker, ‘Gateway to the West.’ Have we whetted your appetite for more lore? There’s plenty in store. In August, the park’s Old Ordnance Room will feature an array of military collections that address the question, ‘Why do we collect?’ Early next year the JB Historic Site will open a new exhibition to commemorate the contributions of American, Missouri and St. Louis soldiers during World War I. This will coincide with the centennial of U.S. preparations for and entry into the Great War. It also was known as The War to End All Wars, but as history tells us, a conflagration much worse was but two decades away.

First there were only three television networks and maybe PBS, too. Now there’s something like 25 million channels, 24/7, but nothing at all you feel like watching. A home show on roofers? Feel the sweat, smell the tar? OK, we made that up, but you get the idea. Well, now we have a new entry in the St. Louis market, which launched July 1 on Charter Channel 995: GOTV. It’s the first original content channel in The Lou, and it doesn’t run all night long with airtime to fill with fluff. GOTV Network provides original programming, documentaries and films, some of which may inspire you to become part of the story. Viewers have the opportunity to participate in a groundbreaking entertainment movement that’s cropped up right here in River City. Check it out from 7 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. every day. The network bills itself as an independent TV and music platform showcasing the newest and brightest talents in the metro. Maybe we’ll hip-hop to our next Nelly. Or shudder to the next Vincent Price.

The importance of tracing assets in divorce Stange Law Firm, PC
Tracing separate property in a divorce can be an important issue for lots of individuals. Take a situation where somebody has a 401k or IRA before marriage. They have put money into this account before marriage through their hard work and labor. They then get married. After marriage, they continue to contribute to this 401k or IRA. At this point, pre-marital separate funds and marital funds are being mixed together — or commingled as we would say in the legal industry. The parties then file for divorce. In these situations, the one spouse is often asking that the entire 401k or IRA be divided
in the divorce. The spouse who had funds in these accounts prior to marriage argues, predictability, that the pre-marital portion should be set aside to them entirely. And they argue that only the funds put in during the marriage should be divided through the divorce. This argument is a good one in most cases. The reality, however, is that the separate funds need to be traced out from the account. This often requires a forensic accountant reviewing statements and doing an analysis to determine the amount that was in these accounts during the marriage. At a minimum, parties will need to subpoena the statements from the date of the marriage to try to determinate amount that was in there. However, it can often be hard to obtain statements
at the exact date of the marriage. In addition to 401ks or IRAs, tracing can be important for other assets like bank accounts, investment accounts, whole life insurance policies and other assets where a party might have built up cash value prior to marriage. Of course, in some instances, a party might consider having a prenuptial agreement drafted prior to getting marriage to ensure the protection of these assets. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. We have lawyers available to help you in your case. When you retain our firm, you will receive access to your case through Your Case Tracker in addition to receiving your lawyer’s personal cell phone number. WHAT ARE SOME INVESTMENT VEHICLES/STRATEGIES THAT WOULD PROVIDE ME EASY ACCESS TO MY ASSETS, SHOULD I NEED THEM FOR LIVING EXPENSES?
If you need easy access to living expenses, the simplest answer is to put the funds in a bank or credit union account. These can include checking, savings or a bank money market fund. Interest rates vary at banks and credit unions, so be sure to look into both brick-and-mortar and online institutions. It’s important to verify that the bank is insured by the FDIC or NCUA. You also can consider certificates of deposits. Most institutions offer CDs with a term as short as six months. However, if you don’t expect to need these funds in the next 12 months, then consider investing them in a moderate risk portfolio of 35 to 50 percent stocks. This can be accomplished through openended, no-load mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Many of the major custodians, like Charles Schwab and Fidelity, also will allow you to purchase their funds commission-free, so the only cost is the actual purchase. For the other part of the portfolio, 50 to 65 percent should be in fixed-income instruments, such as bonds, CDs, municipal bonds or bond funds. For these types of investments, a qualified investment adviser, such as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), will be able to direct you and advise you what’s best for your financial situation.
”
—JULIE BAHR
MANAGING DIRECTOR CLAYTON FINANCIAL GROUP
Investors should realize this simple truth: The purpose of money is to spend it, and the goal is not to run out. So where is the best place to store wealth? A diversified portfolio of lowcost, no-load index funds is the most compelling choice because these funds are inexpensive, have a good menu of choices, and can be purchased easily and liquidated for cash at a very low cost. With low-cost index funds, investors can efficiently diversify into various asset classes, for example: large U.S. stocks; emerging markets like Brazil, Russia, India and China; spot commodities like oil, wheat, gold and copper; and/or a basket of small or midsized stocks or even REITs (real estate investment trusts). There are more than 200 different index funds, both of the conventional opened-ended mutual fund variety and exchange traded funds (ETF). A simple way to determine the best investment mix is to analyze your spending plan for a few years and reconcile it with your anticipated income. If there’s a resulting deficit, then park that amount in shortterm CDs or cash and invest the rest in a handful of different index funds. While no approach is perfect, this method keeps your planned deficits funded and an optimal mix invested with the possibility of much higher returns than could come from stocks, REITs or commodity prices. The evidence is clear: Investment outcomes are random and the only predictable aspect will be the fees incurred. Index funds cost less.
We believe that a fair management fee, low-cost investments and full transparency are top priorities. It seems simple to us, although a lot of the investment management industry still hasn't caught on.

RIVIERA MAYA by dorothy weiner | photos by marc weiner
ntil I went there, the Mexican coastal area between Cancun and Tulum meant only three things to me: honeymooners, free-flowing tequila, and partytill-you-drop crowds.
Called the Riviera Maya, you can, no doubt, find all of the above there, but you also can have an intimate resort experience in one of the finest climates on the planet. Blessed with remarkable natural beauty, a rich culinary heritage and weather we in St. Louis would kill for, this part of the Yucatan Peninsula was carved out of the jungle south of Cancun by developers about 35 years ago. They built resorts up and down the coast, realizing what a gold mine the area could be—just a short plane ride from Dallas, Miami and other U.S. cities. In the span of three days there—when media were invited to a special culinary series at the upscale El Dorado Royale resort—it became clear very soon why this particular property appeals to well-heeled Americans (Brits and Aussies, too). Visibly absent were singles and children, since this is a couples resort with visitors ranging from, yes, newlyweds, to seniors (and if I had to guess, I’d say there were many more over-50s than under). About two hours from Dallas by plane, we encountered plenty of Texans, many of whom reported coming to this resort for years. The first thing that bowls you over is the grounds: 450 acres of palm trees, thatched-roof casitas with swim-up patios, 14 palapa bars and 300 Bali beach beds facing the sea—more than enough needed for the 476 guest rooms. It’s an all-inclusive resort, although they prefer the term ‘gourmet inclusive experience,’ since El Dorado Royale’s particular focus is on food and wine. That’s how the culinary series started four years ago, in a program the first week of every month that brings together acclaimed chefs and experts from Jackson family wines for wine tastings, pairings and cooking demonstrations. The wines and spirits served on-premise, which are included in the $500 to $1,000 per night room rate, are in the premium category, with many of the wines bearing Jackson family nameplates (Kendall-Jackson, La Crema, Cambria, Matanzas Creek and many others). Named one of the Top 100 Hotels & Resorts in the World
by Condé Nast Traveler (and Most Romantic by Forbes), the resort contradicts notions of all-inclusive. It offers all-suite accommodations with jetted tubs and walkout patios, many with swim-up pools, outdoor verandas with table and chairs, and aguas del amor, (private outdoor showers). This place is meant for romance, at any age. If you’re so inclined there are daily activities like yoga on the beach, Pilates, biking and target practice. And off-site activities abound for an extra fee—including snorkeling at nearby Cozumel, horseback riding on the beach, and visits to nearby Tulum. But with a setting this ideal, it can be hard to peel away from the white-sand beach and ever-available margaritas. There are free tequila tastings every day at 2:30 p.m., where you’ll learn that while a product can bear the tequila label with
Blessed with remarkable natural beauty, a rich culinary heritage and weather we in St. Louis would kill for … only 51 percent agave, the finer tequilas (like the ones at this tasting) are made of 100 percent agave and aged in bourbon barrels. (That explains the $80 a bottle price tag.) With food being a big part of the El Dorado experience, I felt compelled to try it all—not possible in three days, but I certainly gave it my all, getting to six out of eight restaurants here. The hands-down favorite was La Isla, a charming openair spot wrapped around the main pool and shielded from the bustle by waterfalls and lush foliage. Each restaurant here has its own chef, and this one certainly shone, as did the service. I recommend the strawberry waffles for breakfast, served with warm compote and fresh berries, and the floating islands for dessert. Of course, this being a foodie resort, most restaurants also have a buffet bar of items to nibble on before your food comes—although they eschew the term ‘buffet’ in favor of ‘food display’ and emphasize that all meals are served to the table. If you prefer alone time, there is also 24-hour room service.
If you go EAT
Try as many of the resort’s restaurants as you can, including the award-winning D’Italia. An on-site hydroponic greenhouse cultivates quite a lot of the produce, an interesting fact that makes you appreciate the mircrogreens and sprouts even more. Don’t miss the Fuentes Culinary Theatre, where you can watch the chef work his magic; you may learn some tips to take home.
PHOTO COURTESY OF EL DORADO ROYALE
Do not miss the Gala Chef’s Dinner, if you happen to visit during one of those guest chef weeks. It’s a highlight, especially if you get someone as memorable as our visiting chef: Jason Dady of Austin, Texas, who was as entertaining as he was telegenic. Held in the Fuentes Culinary Theatre—a massive room with big-screen TVs so everyone could watch the cooking—Dady chopped, pureed and sautéed his way through the delicious meal, all the while teaching us how to reprise it at home. Even with the $180 per couple upcharge, the room was packed. Dady’s five-course menu included local fisherman’s catch crudo, Yucatan-style pico de gallo salad, fish stew, New York strip fajitas and raspberry clafoutis, each course paired with a different Jackson family wine. Even though I was loathe to leave the lush confines of my newfound paradise, we were sent off to sample a meal at the nearby Azul Sensatori resort.
Much like my general reticence about Riviera Maya, all reservations dissipated after tasting the very first bite at its elegant dining spot, Le Chique. The five-diamond (AAA) restaurant, helmed since its opening nine years ago by Chef Jonatan Gomez Luna, also was named Best of the Best and Best Tasting Menu by Travel & Leisure magazine. Eating there was more experience than meal. Each ‘dish’ is carefully crafted as a single bite. The server instructs diners how it is meant to be eaten, usually by placing the entire item into the mouth in order to savor all the flavors together. Chef Luna came to the table to explain his process: The courses are designed to utilize indigenous Mexican ingredients and culinary traditions that together represent the diverse states that compose Mexico. That means cricket dust, tequila, fish rind, mole, quail egg, aguachile, cocoa and many, many other
The beach, lined with billowing Bali beads, is inviting for endless hours of relaxation. ‘Beach butlers’ come around and bring you drinks, towels, bottled water and more. The vistas looking out to sea, however, include a row of concrete bunkers that over time will sink naturally into the ocean floor and create a reef for sea life. For now, it takes some getting used to. In terms of activities, yoga on the beach is fun, and spa treatments (at an extra cost) are wonderful. Evening shows—usually around 10 p.m.—are entertaining (get to the open-air theater early or you may have to stand).

Although the basic suites are acceptable, those in the newer section, El Dorado Casitas Royale, are much nicer. And be sure to check the site map when booking. The resort has various wedding canopies around the property where wedding ceremonies are performed (three to eight a day!), so things can get noisy if you’re near one of these.
There are a couple of gift shops on the grounds and several in the lobby area. Mostly they carry traditional Mexican pottery, T-shirts and some toiletry items. For excellent shopping, the Cancun airport has it all, including duty-free Mexican tequilas and chocolates.
Clockwise, from opposite page: The beach at El Dorado Royale, with billowing beach beds; cocktail reception of canapes and Jackson family wines; guest chef Jason Dady; tequila-tasting area; in-room jetted tub and agua del amor; the vehicle of choice around the resort; array of microgreens from the greenhouse (inset)
elements. By about course eight, it was getting to be a real challenge to wrap my mind around the rationale for each new dish, however the accompanying wine pours made me feel less and less guilty about that. I wouldn’t want readers to think this resort is only about vegging out on the beach and eating. There is also a pretty impressive spa, Naay (nah-i), that offers a range of services, including massage in a private palapa on the beach with nothing but a canvas wall between you and the Caribbean. Working with indigenous Mayan oils, the Kukulcan Massage lives up to its description as “the perfect combination for your relaxation.” Just be prepared to be roused from your trance after 80 minutes. I need to point out the tremendous pride our servers, entertainers, drivers and everyone else with whom we came into contact expressed about their country. In fact, each song, dance and vaquero show— we were there during Cinco de Mayo—ended with, Viva Mexico! And we were asked repeatedly how we liked our vacation in Mexico. Fortunately, I could answer with complete honesty: Me gusta mucho.

LAVONNE BYERS
FRONT&CENTER] by donna parrone
I RECENTLY HAD THE PLEASURE OF SITTING DOWN FOR A COCKTAIL with my favorite St. Louis actor, Lavonne Byers, to ask her a few questions about theater and the local scene. Full disclosure: Byers and I have sat down for many a cocktail together over the last 17 years! She is a good friend, in part because I find her to be a most skillful actor. She has talent, but also a thorough discipline combined with a layered creative process and an instrument, both vocal and physical, that she bends easily to her will. Byers is a St. Louis native: high school at Normandy, college at SLU, then away to Purdue for her master’s. She spent time in Chicago and New York, but St. Louis is where she chooses to make her home. “New York and Chicago are where you go to build a career,” she says. “St. Louis is where you have a life.” Like most people, Byers started her theatrical career at the community level at Webster Theater Guild in her early 20s. “There was a time I would take any role that came along,” she reminisces over our Cosmos. “Now I’m in a place where I can pick and choose from the options offered.” Byers is in the enviable position of having directors seek her out, rather than having to audition for many of her roles in the last 10 years. “First, I have to decide if I like the play and the character I’m being asked to portray. Then, I decide if I want to invest the time and energy to create the role.” Byers leans toward strong, vivid characters that offer a high level of challenge. Her focus is the method of creation, and she prefers the rehearsal process to the final product. Of course I had to ask about favorite roles, Big 8 in Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage (HotHouse Theatre), Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Vanity Theater) and the emcee in Cabaret (Stray Dog Theatre). Of the myriad companies in town, she enjoyed working with the now defunct Orthwein Theatre Company and HotHouse, and her current favorite is Stray Dog because of the challenging roles she has been offered. Some of her favorite theater personalities include costume designer Michelle Siler because “she uses the costume to tell us more about the character,” and directors Brooke Edwards, Marty Stanberry, Bill Whitaker, John Austermann and Carolyn Hood. During our second round, she told me she has an Excel spreadsheet that contains every show she has done since 1978—more than 140 with role, director and company listed. “Theater is a social and creative outlet for me, the unique aspect of my life that makes it exciting and fulfilling.” The worst part of theater? The 10 minutes right before she goes on. The best? “That first glass of wine after curtain call.”

HARD TO BELIEVE SCAPE IS TURNING 10 SOON. The
elegant restaurant just steps from the Chase Park Plaza is shaking things up before its landmark anniversary. First, they’ve brought in a new executive chef, Shimon Diamond, recently of Cielo at the Four Seasons Hotel. The Parkway Central grad studied at L’Ecole Culinaire and has added inventive touches to Scape’s American bistro menu. The restaurant also has opened a more casual, drinks-andsmall-plates place, Scapegoat, next door. Diamond has revamped the menu, with a focus on “technique-driven Midwestern food.” Caesar salad ($9) includes pickled red onions and Mayfair dressing— hardly traditional, but very good. The salad includes an artisan, 30-month aged vache rosse, a type of Parmigiano-Reggiano. If the Basil Gnocchi ($15) offered on our first visit returns, don’t miss it. Memorable on all counts, the tender, puffy potato dumplings were browned on every side and sat among a potpourri of culinary treats: wild mushrooms, cipollini onions, truffles and asparagus spears.
A special starter, Soft-Shell Crabs ($22), was tasty, with a tempura crust encasing three half-crabs and ponzu sauce for dipping. One of the world’s best culinary treats, in my opinion, soft-shells are delicious as long as they’re fresh. These were, and the kitchen wisely let them speak for themselves without a lot of fuss. The hands-down smash hit here is the Sea Scallops entree ($33). The tops of these massive bivalves had been smashed onto the grill to yield a serrated finish that took to its sear better than any I’ve seen. The scallops were mixed with the most lusciously prepared oyster mushrooms, cooked to almost crisp and releasing their musky flavor. A bed of sweet and pungent apple and fennel slaw formed a base, with cracker-like ‘fennel pollen tuiles,’ delicate fennellaced crackers, sticking up from it. The only element that was a mismatch—the cannellini beans—were a bit too prosaic for such regal food. Also noteworthy was the Tagliatelle ($24), housemade noodles tossed with slow-braised pork, fresh

English peas, pea shoots, bits of creamy goat cheese and deliciously roasted radishes of every hue. Something about the earthy root vegetable enhanced the pork and added some zing to the noodles. Well done! Desserts were very good, especially the buttery Chocolate Torte ($10). A pâte brisée tart shell was filled with dark ganache and sprinkled liberally with sea salt, making the treat almost as salty as it was sweet. Caramel ice cream added a creamy component—all around excellent. The Banana Cream Pie ($10) is also a treat, with its crushed Nutter Butter crust, massive topping of creamy banana filling, and slices of caramelized bananas on top. In terms of ambiance, Scape has remained one of the most stunning restaurants in the city. Its wall of windows faces the fountain on Maryland Plaza, while in back, a huge patio area is a little urban retreat with relaxing lounge areas near the bar and a massive outdoor wall of climbing vines, big-screen TVs and mock pillars.

[ local liqueur is golden ]
BIG O GINGER LIQUEUR, created by husband and wife KATHY KUPER and BILL FOSTER, has earned some serious street cred at two prestigious competitions: the Denver International Spirits Competition (gold, Herbal Liqueur category) and Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition (silver, Herbal Liqueur category). You can find the award winner at shops around town, on local menus, or at drinkthebigo.com.
[ grass roots effort ]
Early fall is when we are due to see a new restaurant by impressively credentialed MICHAEL GALLINA and his wife TARA GALLINA. The former chef de cuisine at acclaimed Blue Hill at Stone Barns (Pocantico Hills, N.Y.), Gallina is prepping a spot in the CWE’s Cortex district at Duncan and Boyle avenues for a new farm-to-table eatery, VICIA. Expect “vegetable-forward cuisine driven by local farmers, with an emphasis on wood-fired cooking.”
[ drewes in the news ]
Our very own TED DREWES FROZEN CUSTARD got a great, big shoutout from none other than Food & Wine magazine, which named the South City gem to its Bucket List of Best Summer Restaurants. It’s quite the coup, considering the gazillion eateries all across America. The local treat was aptly described as “creamy, mouth-coating vanilla custard.”
[ a new moon ]
THE MOONRISE HOTEL in the Loop has launched new menus and a
main-level redo that includes a fabulous new bar area, smaller dining room and a new event space for up to 175 (125 seated). New executive chef MARK PERALTA has added a Filipino touch to his all-new, smallerplate menus, including one for the rooftop lounge, which now has its own kitchen.

[ changes big & small ]
Area favorite BRIO TUSCAN GRILLE, on the Plaza Frontenac grounds, is getting a menu makeover; its 13 new entrees include many small plates for sharing and low-calorie and gluten-free items. VINCENT VAN DOUGHNUT has announced plans for a second location at 1072 Tower Grove Ave., complete with liquorlaced (and/or wine or beer) doughnuts and extended weekend hours. CURTAIN CALL LOUNGE at the Fabulous Fox has added wine-tasting events (July 28 and Aug. 4, 18 & 25). Visit curtaincallstl.com for details. RANDOLFI’S ITALIAN KITCHEN in the Loop has launched a new Aperitivo Happy Hour Tuesdays through Fridays, with selected small bites and $5 cocktails at the bar from 5 to 7 p.m.

Everything you’d want in a Ghostbusters reboot is present in this entertaining installment from director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat): ghosts spooky and silly, witty one-liners, outlandish ghost-busting weapons and a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The four leads—Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy—are a delight to watch and bring great chemistry to this fun, low-key summer blockbuster. McKinnon’s performance especially stands out. The comedy queen plays the eccentric, kooky Jillian Holtzmann, an enthusiastic mad scientist who creates an impressive range of ghost-busting weapons. As in her work on SNL, she effortlessly steals scenes with just a look, an oddball off-hand comment or a flirtatious wink. Chris Hemsworth also is enjoyable as the Ghostbusters’ ditzy secretary. Overall, the film manages to have a similar feel as the beloved original, thanks in part to a cameo from Bill Murray, a co-writing credit from Dan Aykroyd and numerous winks to the 1984 film. But the best part (and I hate that this is even worth mentioning): this film lets women kick ass without the stereotypical complications of jealousies, boyfriend drama and other insipid concerns women on screen are saddled with. Here, they’re uncomplicated, funny and focused soley on the mission of catching ghosts.

COVER STORY
[CREATIVE CARE SLUCARE PHYSICIAN GROUP by stephanie zeilenga WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR HEALTH, the conventional route isn’t always the best one. That’s what
David Spencer discovered when he had to have three sizable skin cancers on his nose removed via Mohs surgery. The outpatient procedure offers a 99 percent cure rate for nonmelanoma cancers, according to the American College of Mohs Surgery, but the resultant wounds, especially when the cancer covers a larger area, can involve unsightly repairs. That’s something Spencer, who had plans to go on a cruise a few months later, couldn’t have. So his SLUCare Physician Group doctors thought outside the box. The solution: two newer, less traditional repair techniques, explains Dr. Ian Maher, a Mohs and dermatologic surgeon. The result was a home run. “I thought I’d have scars, but I just have a faint line, and if you didn’t know I had surgery, you wouldn’t even notice it,” Spencer says. The procedure was so noteworthy, it is being published later this year in Dermatologic Surgery. Creative problem-solving is typical of the SLUCare Mohs team, Maher says. “We’re always driving ourselves to expand our skill set so we can deliver increasingly better results,” he notes, adding that his team offers skin cancer patients a one-stop solution. “We provide a high level of outpatient reconstruction, which means even patients with very complex skin cancers and wounds are able to avoid the added expense and inconvenience of seeing multiple providers.” He adds that additional specialists who may be required for very complex cases are available through SLUCare. Recently new to SLUCare is Dr. Ramona Behshad, assistant professor of dermatology at Saint Louis University. Behshad says the collaborative nature of her SLUCare team results in seamless patient care. “If a patient needs complex reconstruction, such as when the cancer is close to the facial glands and requires an ENT specialist, I don’t have to figure out another physician to transition their care to,” she says. “Here, we all have access to the same medical records and we’re all constantly checking in with each other, so it’s easy.” Behshad says she loves the patient-centric approach at SLUCare. “I can feel it in the way patients are taken care of, from the admins who help them schedule appointments to the nurses who constantly check in and make sure they’re OK,” she notes. Sister Patricia Talone, a patient who had Mohs surgery on her nose, agrees. Although she jokes that at her age, she doesn’t much care about appearance, she was concerned that an unsightly scar would detract from the professional talks she gives regularly. But Maher calmed her fears, making the experience as stress-free as possible. “He clearly explained everything to me ahead of time, and during the procedure he did everything he could to keep my anxiety level down,” says Talone, who was able to return to work in a matter of days. “Overall, the experience was excellent. Friends say they can’t even tell I had surgery.”

Sometimes less is more— or at least enough. When it comes to cosmetic surgery, sometimes we just need a tweak, a little nip—or tuck—to get us where we want to be. There is an increasing number of noninvasive cosmetic treatments on the market these days, and many have no side effects or recuperation time. What, for instance, could be simpler than using radiofrequency waves for tightening saggy skin? And who knew that infrared light delivered painlessly by laser can turn off the aging gene? It's a new world out there.
TWEAKING EYES
Oh dear, those frown lines, those spidery traces of laughter! What’s to be done about the effects of emotion on a face? Dr. Joseph Muccini of the MidAmerica Skin Health & Vitality Center uses a linen napkin as metaphor for what happens around the eyes after a lifetime of smiles and frowns. “Fold it once and there’s no crease,” he says. “But iron the folded napkin, and the creases become harder to get out.” Frowning, he says, stamps its mark in the vertical lines between the brows–referred to as 1s (ones), 11s (elevens) or 111s (one-elevens) depending on how many there are. Smile lines, or crow’s feet, are the little ‘sunbeams’ at the sides of the eyes, which also can be caused by squinting. Muccini says Botox (a botulinum toxin) is the simplest solution to both these issues, but he stresses that the process doesn’t wipe history off the face. “Facial expression
gives us an instant read of a person, but it may be inaccurate,” he says. “Sometimes, patients simply want to put their best face forward.” One of three botulinums, Botox is injected in very small amounts to a precisely targeted area. “A common misconception is that it is a filler, but we use it to knock out the muscle that is doing the contracting,” Muccini explains. Because of its paralyzing effects, the treatment must be done judiciously. “If it goes wrong, it can have life-altering consequences like blindness,” he cautions. “But it is so easy to do well.” Treatment, he says, takes less than 10 minutes and involves one tiny needle inserted numerous times. “It isn’t terrible in the slightest,” he says. Dr. John Holds, ophthalmic plastic surgeon and owner of Ophthalmic Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, says a particularly easy
tweak can be made to the eyelashes for a more youthful appearance. About 20 years ago, it was discovered that one of the drugs used to treat glaucoma (prostaglandin) was causing lashes to lengthen, thicken and darken. Now marketed as Latisse, the liquid medication is painted onto the upper lid (and even eyebrows), and slows the natural cycle of shedding. Initially, daily application is encouraged, but Holds says long-term use might involve only three applications per week. Latisse can be bought over the counter and costs between $110 and $240. Holds says another symptom of aging— ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid)— can be addressed easily with few side effects. Unlike blepharoplasty, a surgery that involves incisions of skin, muscle and fat, a ptosis repair tightens the tendons
that lift the lid through a small incision either inside or outside the lid. “It’s not scary at all,” says Holds. “In fact, it’s fabulous.” He cautions, however, that any time you cut into the body there is a risk of swelling, bruising and infection. If done well, this repair has negligible effects and little downtime. Correction to one eye costs around $2,000, and Holds points out that faces often are asymmetrical and need only one correction. It’s an outpatient procedure that takes 30 minutes and requires sedation and local anesthesia.
MIDSECTION We want a waist and a flat stomach. We don’t want to struggle with our buttons and zippers. We don’t want stretch marks. According to local physicians, however, certain noninvasive treatments can offer good results when it comes to the stubborn midsection. Venus Legacy is a hand-held device that uses radio frequency to tighten saggy skin by heating collagen, the latticework that holds the skin together. “As the targeted area heats, the collagen coils tighter,” explains Dr. Richard Moore, medical director of The Lifestyle Center. He says some results are seen immediately; more improvement is apparent two to three months later, after the body has produced new, more elastic collagen. Moore says each session takes 20 to 30 minutes and treats an area half the size of an 8-by-11 inch sheet of paper. Good candidates include those who have excess skin due to weight loss or pregnancy. He cautions, however, that the older we get, the less responsive the body might be to this treatment. “Loose, soft skin is just not going to tighten as well,” he says. While the Legacy is designed to address loose skin, a procedure called Vanquish ME specifically targets fat removal. Also using radiofrequency waves, this technique destroys 30 percent of fat cells over the course of four one-hour sessions, Moore says. “That can amount to a 2-inch size reduction.”
However, some physicians say abdominoplasty (more affectionately known as a ‘tummy tuck’) really is the only effective way of removing both fat and excess skin. “Most of my patients hate that thick wad of skin and fat in the midsection that they can grab,” says Dr. Michele Koo, board-certified plastic surgeon. “They hate not being able to tuck their shirt into their pants or looking like a pear. They hate looking matronly.” A mini tuck, she says, is suitable for anyone who has excess bulge below the belly button, while a full tuck is a more involved surgery that addresses pockets of fat and skin that has lost elasticity due to age and pregnancy. Koo says that even a full tummy tuck is not considered “major” surgery, although it does require a two-week recovery period during which the patient should not drive. (A mini tuck has a much shorter recovery time.) Otherwise, Koo says the midsection can be tweaked with liposuction, which removes fat around the belly button. This procedure is performed in-office and takes no longer than an hour. Koo says she is skeptical of new noninvasive treatments involving heat and energy waves. “They remove very small amounts of fat, and I am not a proponent of anything that doesn’t give significant discernible results,” she says.

THE BODY
FACE
Oh, that droop ... those pesky capillaries. The texture. Bring on the needles and lasers! “Stress has collagen for lunch!” says Carol Anderson, certified aesthetic nurse specialist and owner of Nouveau, A Boutique Medspa. There are many reasons for collagen breakdown (which results in poor skin quality), including sugar, sun and lack of sleep. But a relatively new technique called Forever Young is helping reverse their effects by kickstarting the production of new collagen. According to a 2012 Stanford University study, Forever Young works because the broadband and infrared lights it uses actually cause the aging genes to turn off and the youth genes to turn on. “This means the cells themselves behave more youthfully, and for one to three months afterward, it translates to a more youthful
appearance,” Anderson explains, adding that Forever Young must be repeated for the effects to be maintained. “If you have it regularly, you may be able to avoid more invasive procedures later on,” she says. “But as with most treatments in this industry, you aren’t just ‘one and done.’’’ During the one-hour procedure, the lights are delivered to face, neck and chest (or any other area of the body) via Sciton laser. There are almost no side effects and no downtime. The best candidates, Anderson says, are those with skin on the fairer end of the scale; an in-office consultation can determine your skin’s suitability for this treatment. Microneedling has become a mainstay of anti-aging technology in recent years, says Jacqueline Carr, RN, of Aesthetic Medispa of West County. It, too, is designed to
stimulate collagen growth, but it involves micro-perforation into the upper layers of skin to minimize pore size, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and lift and tighten the skin. During the procedure, a hand-held device with nine precisely spaced needles glides across the face while the needles minutely pierce the epidermis. “There is some bleeding,” says Carr, but she stresses that patients are numbed with a topical anesthetic for an hour beforehand. Side effects are minimal, but Carr says anytime the skin is broken, there’s a risk of bruising, swelling and infection. She adds that most people experience only a mild discomfort akin to sunburn for 48 hours afterward. Carr notes the effectiveness of microneedling varies by case. “It works better on some people than others,” she
says, adding that treatments need to be ongoing for long-term results. She suggests patients receive three to six treatments spaced three to six weeks apart, and then one or two sessions yearly thereafter. Each one-hour session costs $300.
Everyone wants to look Forever Young … and Now Everyone can! Clinically proven to reverse aging with NO DOWNTIME! Q: What is Forever Young BBL?(FYBBL) Carol: FYBBL is a cutting edge new skin treatment utilizing pulsed light. The protocol was developed by Patrick Bitter, Jr., dermatologist, who is considered the world’s topmost authority on IPL/BBL treatments. FYBBL will help eliminate brown spots, redness, enlarged pores wrinkles, etc. It also increases your skin’s reflectivity of light which produces a much more youthful appearance or – the glow. The best feature is no downtime.
Q&A
With Carol Anderson – Owner
Q: What makes Forever young BBL so special? Carol: In a study conducted at Stanford University by Patrick Bitter, FYBBL was shown to literally cause genes to e xpress themselves younger. We are now talking about not just slowing down the signs of aging, but actually reversing it. An independent panel of 400 people were asked to guess the ages of 15 test subjects who had gone through the FYBBL study. The panel guessed the subjects to be 11 years younger than they actually were. It’s the first study to actually prove age reversal!
Q: Who is qualified to perform FYBBL? Carol: Once I learned about FYBBL, I attended lectures and one-on-one training with Dr. Bitter. What better source of learning than from the Dr. who developed the protocol and performed the study? FYBBL utilizes the Sciton BBLs System to deliver a variety of wavelengths of light, pulse widths, and deep tissue tightening. Only the Sciton system can deliver FYBBL. FYBBL delivers some of the most amazing results I have seen over the 10 years I have been in aesthetic medicine.

HOMEWORK]
DEAR HOMEWORK,
I purchased this home recently and have been remodeling the interior. Now it’s time to start on the exterior. It was built in the ’50s and has not been well-maintained. I would like to relocate the front door from the right side of the front porch to the front of the house, where the large window with long black shutters is. The entry foyer will open into the house much better that way. Also, the large front yard has no landscaping—please help, as it is dreadful! Sincerely, DEAR MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE RANCH,
—MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE RANCH
I understand your desire to relocate the front door, but your solution will look awkward. I suggest a more helpful architectural solution: make the entry a taller, wider element and then build retaining walls and a flight of steps to make it the main aesthetic focus of the home’s long façade. Attached shorter retaining walls tie the composition together and add a needed extra layer to the rather flat existing composition. Next, I suggest turning the existing picture windows into French doors and making the secondary windows much taller. I would then paint them a dark brown to match the new color of the gutters, lamps and decorative urns. At the moment, the house has the color scheme, shutters and decorative wrought iron columns of a New Orleans Colonial, but the ‘bones’ of a midcentury ranch. I think the structure most comfortably wears a contemporary look. To that end, I show a tan paint wash to tone down the Georgian brick color. Simple brick columns replace the wrought iron ones, while simple light fixtures and minimal window grids underscore the modern vibe. A new brown circle drive gives purpose to the front lawn, and a simple landscape scheme works to enliven the new architecture. I think it could become rather impressive. —HOMEWORK

How to CREATE ARCHITECTURE Where There is None? JANE SAYS:
“
The original design of this hi rise condo left the foyer with the effect of a cold, stark tunnel. The flat ceilings and long unadorned side walls were not a suitable preface to the amazing cityscape view. The first step was to address the wall on the right by breaking it into staggered panels that perfectly frame the contemporary art. The ceiling was redesigned to become a linear focal point. The construction of the ceiling did not allow it to be raised and a true coffer installed, so three different levels of layered drywall created a dramatic effect. Square domed semi-flush light fixtures warm and highlight the new ceiling with a soft glow. A wing wall was created at the end of the foyer to house a curved lighted niche, perfect to display the owner’s prized sculpture. A sneak preview of the amazing view is beautifully framed to the right of the wing wall.

THE JOVIAL NOTES OF ‘THE ENTERTAINER,’ Scott Joplin’s ragtime masterpiece, are a cultural American treasure, one created right here in St. Louis. “Joplin represents the beginning of America moving away from European-style music and developing a unique music identity,” says site administrator Almetta Jordan. “Besides sacred music, ragtime is the first truly American music and the first representing AfricanAmerican ingenuity.” The Scott Joplin State Historic Site offers insight into the musician and the times during which he lived. The flat Joplin and his wife Belle called home from around 1901 to 1903 was built around 1860 and is a typical St. Louis tenant rowhouse of the time. Although Joplin was born in Texas and lived in various locations throughout his life, this is his only known surviving residence and where he wrote several of his masterpieces. The house is maintained by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources as a state historic site. In 1976, after the local African-American community saved it from destruction, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark. Besides covering Joplin’s life and legacy, the home’s exhibits also discuss black urban migration, as well as racism, poverty, sanitation, and
other related topics. It also gives visitors a sense of what life was like for the working class at the turn of the century. Lit by gaslight, the modest apartment features era-appropriate furnishings. Naturally, the experience is accompanied by Joplin’s music, courtesy of an antique player piano. This glimpse into everyday life is unique, Jordan says. “Most of the homes that have been preserved as museums are very elegant, but the Scott Joplin House is just a regular person’s home,” she says. “Joplin lived among the working class.” The site also includes The Rosebud Cafe, a newly reconstructed bar and gaming club that can be reserved for private events. “We modeled the venue off The Rosebud Saloon operated by Thomas Turpin, a friend of Scott Joplin’s,” Jordan says, adding that Turpin’s brother was the first elected African-American official in the city. Visitors can experience The Rosebud Cafe at various site-related events, including the annual tea held around Mother’s Day and the monthly Ragtime Rendezvous hosted by the Friends of Scott Joplin. The ragtime events take place at 2 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month. Tickets to visit the Scott Joplin House are $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 16 and free for anyone under the age of 6.

by alexa beattie RedKey Realty Leaders agents Steve and Valerie Engel have been a husband-and-wife team since 2007. Both grew up in St. Louis—Steve in University City, Valerie in the Ladue/Olivette area. Steve obtained his first real estate license in Florida, but worked in residential development until he returned to St. Louis in 1995. The couple now lives in the Hillcrest neighborhood of Clayton with their two English bulldogs, Buster and Skipper. “They make a much better-looking couple than we do,” Steve quips.

university city » WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT?
House of India, where I always order the chicken CUTLINE tikka masala.
WHERE DO YOU GRAB A GOOD CUP OF COFFEE? Winslow’s Home serves a good one.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STORE?
I used to like going to Vintage Vinyl, but now I’d probably say United Provisions, the new grocery store where I buy lots of nice wine and cheese.
WHICH PARK/OUTDOOR SPACE DO YOU MOST ENJOY?
PHOTO: BILL BARRETT
Ruth Park Golf Course on Groby Road. I was a terror there growing up—we rode our dirt bikes on it after dark, which didn’t go down too well!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT UNIVERSITY CITY?
The different neighborhoods and the beautiful architecture. My favorite neighborhood is University Hills.
WHAT SETS UNIVERSITY CITY APART FROM OTHER AREAS IN ST. LOUIS? Its central location and great accessibility to parks and universities. You can live there for 60 cents on the dollar compared to Clayton.
NOTEWORTHY: SINCE 2005, STEVE AND VALERIE ENGEL HAVE EARNED A LOCAL FIVE STAR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AWARD. THEY HAVE 35 YEARS OF COMBINED REAL ESTATE EXPERIENCE, WITH LIFETIME SALES IN EXCESS OF $300 MILLION. NINETY-FIVE PERCENT OF THEIR SALES COME FROM REFERRALS AND REPEAT CLIENTS.
