[ letter from the editor ]

The T&S editorial team went on a field trip recently. We drove to an unmarked building in Old North St. Louis to visit the brand, spankin’ new Magdalene St. Louis home. I hope it sounds somewhat familiar to readers, since we wrote a story about the place four years ago, when it was first announced there would be a St. Louis affiliate of the Nashville nonprofit that helps women move past lives of unspeakable horror. Like being sold to the ‘drug man’ at age 9. Magdalene St. Louis is a community for women who have survived prostitution, violence, drug abuse and life on the streets (all at once). The two-year program offers a path to healing through intensive therapy, substance abuse support groups, and likely most important, a loving home environment. In fact, the staff’s mantra is ‘love heals.’ Some of the staffers even have the phrase tattooed on their arms. The Magdalene board includes a reverend and a rabbi, and it was founded by an Episcopalian minister. But it’s not a faith-based organization, unless you think of love as a faith. The program harnesses the power of the positive by giving women who have never known these things acceptance, trust, support and generosity. And while some residents backslide and others may outright fail to get beyond their past travails, the program’s success rate in Nashville has been nearly 75 percent. That’s pretty remarkable when you realize what it means: Women who sold their bodies for money and suffered years of addiction somehow have found the strength to walk through the flames and come out the other side. Hopes are high for our 4-month-old Magdalene: to meet its 11-resident capacity, to turn an adjoining lot into a community garden, and maybe to acquire the building next door some day, so they can help even more women. For now, they’re just going to take it one loving day at a time. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

FUNDING A CURE THE SNOW FOUNDATION by tony di martino A mother usually knows when something is wrong with her child. Raquel was just 4 years old when she was diagnosed with juvenile onset diabetes. Soon afterward, she began losing her sight. “We were told she had severe optic atrophy, which is unusual in such a young child,” recalls her mom, Stephanie Snow Gebel. When MRIs and brain scans failed to find the underlying problem, genetic testing finally revealed the cause: Raquel’s diabetes and vision defects were manifestations of Wolfram syndrome, a rare disease that destroys nerve cells in the pancreas, eyes, ears and ultimately the brain. Gebel listened in shock while the doctor said there was no cure or treatment for the disease. His next words pierced her heart: About 60 percent of Wolfram syndrome patients die before age 30. “I could barely breathe,” she recalls. “It was like hearing my daughter’s death sentence.” Unable to stand by while her child deteriorated, Gebel decided to help other families who are going through the same ordeal. With support from her brother, former San Francisco Giants first baseman J.T. Snow, she established Snow Foundation. “We fund cutting-edge research, help patients and families dealing with Wolfram syndrome, and raise awareness among physicians and the general public,” Gebel explains. Barely five years after her initial diagnosis, Raquel is now legally blind. She also suffers from bladder problems and sometimes chokes on her food. “There is no happy ending to this story,” says Dr. Saad Naseer, CEO and chief medical officer of The Snow Foundation. “Unless we find a way to halt the progression of this disease, Raquel and approximately 20,000 other children and young people with Wolfram’s will lose their sight and hearing, suffer from muscle spasms, seizures and incontinence, and eventually lose brain function and the ability to breathe.” Since Wolfram’s doesn’t affect as many people as heart disease or cancer, it doesn’t receive significant funding from the government and pharmaceutical companies. “And that’s a tragedy, because research on rare diseases often leads to a better understanding of other, more common diseases,” Naseer notes. Collaborative international research efforts, particularly those led by Dr. Fumihiko Urano at Washington University School of Medicine, are on the verge of developing two breakthrough therapies for Wolfram’s, but clinical trials are needed. “These drugs also could benefit individuals with diabetes, as well as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.” Wolfram syndrome is hard to diagnose. Many physicians don’t even know it exists. “We’re trying to spread the word,” Gebel says. In honor of Raquel and other kids with Wolfram’s, Aug. 17 has been designated Wolfram Syndrome Day at Busch Stadium. The St. Louis Cardinals will play the San Francisco Giants, reigning World Series champs. “The more we know about Wolfram’s, the faster we’ll find a way to treat it, and the more we’ll learn about other neurological disorders,” Gebel says. “Please join us Aug. 17. Help my child and other children lead longer, healthier lives.”

I know this is July, but I got to thinking about

It was a sea of red, white and blue at a star-studded “Faith, Family and Fireworks” themed birthday party earlier this month for Eric Rhone, manager of comedian Cedric the Entertainer. About 200 guests decked in patriotic colors were treated to a musical performance by Eddie Levert and a private fireworks display on the veranda of The Four Seasons Hotel downtown. In lieu of gifts, guests made donations to Annie Malone Children’s Center and New Life Evangelistic Center.

my New Year’s resolutions, and thought I may as well do a mid-year assessment. First I have to admit that I am a big believer in them, but some years they work, others not so much. Feeling ambitious, I made several this year. My first resolution was to tell my friends and family I loved them (I mean the ones I actually do, not the ones I am indifferent toward). I grew up in a very loving family, but we are not people who actually say the words ‘I love you.’ Nor do we hug or kiss much. I know, hard to imagine an Irish clan that is not particularly emotional, or singing “Oh Danny Boy” at every occasion. I never miss a chance to tell my kids I love them, but everyone else is left guessing. So at the beginning of the year, I told two friends I loved them. It didn’t go well. I guess because I am not a feelings-sharer, one friend assumed I was seriously ill and this was goodbye. The other friend just stared at me across the dinner table and said, “That’s nice.” In other words, there was no ‘I love you’ back. Guess that’s what happens when a non-sharer opens up to another non-sharer. After those two reactions, I decided it is probably better to just let people continue to wonder if I love, like, or simply tolerate them. That seems to make everyone, including me, much more comfortable. My second resolution was to wear red lipstick every day. Yes, you read that correctly. There is something so adult about wearing red lipstick that no matter what you have on, you seem very sophisticated with a pop of color on your lips. This resolution was much harder to keep than I expected. Red is a tricky color for redheads with freckles. I tried about seven different lipsticks and countless lip glosses, but each time I peered in the mirror I looked like a double for The Joker. And that is not a good thing. Seriously, I had to remove pictures from my Facebook page because the color on my lips literally screamed, ‘crazy ass.’ (Can I say ass in this paper?) My third and final resolution was to stop caring about what other people think. But it is a nearly impossible goal for a youngest child. All I want is approval. Did you like dinner? Do you like my outfit? Did you think my column was funny? The only time I don’t care is when I am sleeping, and really you can only sleep so much each day. I cannot exaggerate how much anxiety this causes me. The lack of feedback from others only results in a heightened stress level. Acting like I didn’t care was harder than actually caring. So, this year my New Year’s resolutions have been a big, fat failure. I thought about making new ones mid-year, but decided against it. I hope you’ve had better success with your New Year’s Resolutions. Actually, I don’t—I hope you are just like me. It helps my self-esteem to know that I am not the only resolutions failure. Oh and by the way, I love my readers. I really do.

A glimpse at what’s going on around St. Louis and beyond.

It was a St. Louis takeover in the Big Apple recently when 60 COCA supporters attended an Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performance at Lincoln Center. It was the final show featuring Antonio and Kirven Douthit-Boyd, who will join COCA as co-artistic directors of dance on Aug. 17. The group also hit Broadway for The Audience, featuring Helen Mirren alongside COCA student Elizabeth Teeter, 13, from Webster Groves, who was finishing a five-month run with the show.

Four St. Louis business owners are heading to sunny Palm Springs in November to compete against 600 others for Ernst & Young’s prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year award. Representing the Midwest, along with three others from Kansas and elsewhere in Missouri, are: David Bailey, owner of Bailey’s Restaurants (St. Louis); Gabe Douek, CEO of Gateway Media, LLC (Clayton); Bob Hummert, CEO of Grimco, Inc. (Fenton); and Rusty Keeley, CEO, The Keeley Companies (St. Louis). The only global award of its kind, the program recognizes innovative business leaders in 60 countries. The U.S. winner will vie for the worldwide title in Monaco next June.

After many years on the bench, the late Hon. John J. McAtee came to believe that subjects with mental illness deserved appropriate treatment, not automatic incarceration. Two officers from Ballwin were among 49 in the metro who recently received an award named after McAtee. On separate occasions, the officers defused

partrolman leo bergin, sgt. dan hawk

life-threatening situations when suicidal young men barricaded themselves in a room and warned they also would do harm to anyone who tried to intervene. In one case, Sgt. Dan Hawk assisted two officers under his command in convincing a combative 18-year-old to come out of his room peacefully. Via cellphone, Hawk established a rapport and calmly encouraged the disturbed man to put down the knives he had taken in with him. This fellow had a history of suicide attempts and assaulting law enforcement. He settled down and was taken to a psychiatric facility. In the other case, patrolman Leo Bergin persuaded a troubled juvenile to slide his knife under the door and come out, which he did without incident. No one was hurt in either case. With these two incidents as a backdrop, it is important to note that the majority of the men and women in blue act in volatile circumstances according to their training; i.e., most officers behave calmly, objectively and professionally. In the case of these two McAtee Award honorees, they displayed patience and an uncanny sensitivity to people who were dangerous, but mentally ill. We salute them. Crime reports in some municipalities are nothing if not painstakingly detailed. In the fair city of Kirkwood recently, someone broke into a car and stole an iPhone and one other item. Guess what it was. More electronic goodies that could yield cash on the street? In this case, not a chance. Drugs? Guns? Nope. The other item was … a pair of pants. (Doesn’t anybody rip off clotheslines anymore? In any

case, geez—sure hope they don’t fit.) To the east, off I-44 a piece, a resident or residents are going to be twiddling their thumbs until they find other ways to waste their time. Someone entered a home through a rear door—‘unsecured’, natch—and stole the following: cash and three wristwatches plus (count ’em) an Apple laptop computer, Nintendo gaming system, PlayStation system, Microsoft game system, Sony game system, Xbox I Kinect sensor, Apple tablet and an Apple iPad. OMG. Read a book! Fabletics is a new store bound for the Galleria that’s the brainchild of Kate Hudson, famous actress and daughter of Goldie Hawn. Well, at least she’s the co-founder, and her buff bod is all over the website. One of only five that are going into malls at this point, the stores are expanding to bricks and mortar from a formerly online-only presence. Think Athleta, the fashion-fitness boutique at Plaza Frontenac, with a subscription twist. Here we go again with a kinda-sorta business model based on Columbia Record Club, or book clubs that sent you a selection every month whether you wanted it or not. Outfits are sent to subscribers based on personal preferences, and the first outfit is $25. (Free shipping and exchanges! VIP members get their gear at half price!) The store is slated to open in the Galleria by October, if you can possibly wait until then. But, are you feeling more flab-letic these days? Get a trainer. Please don’t wear this stuff unless you’re fit enough to carry it off, and are actually exercising. Just sayin.’ Meanwhile, I write this as I suck in my belly. Then let it out, and suck it back in. Ten repetitions every other week. Hey—that counts as exercise, doesn’t it? Do you love vintage vehicles that are two-tone, with or without tail fins? Well, if you missed the Great American Race a few weeks ago that started at the Kirkwood train station, whereupon drivers then got their kicks on Route 66 all the way to the Pacific, there’s another chance next month to ogle classic cars. The sixth annual Crestwood-Sunset Hills Route 66 Car Cruise is set for the weekend of Aug. 8, with an outdoor showing of the delightful animated flick Cars kicking it off that Friday (Aug. 7). Alas, there’s no drive-in theater down there anymore, but at least you don’t have to think about how many kids you can cram in the trunk to avoid admission charges. The flick, and activities during the rest of the weekend, are free. It will be shown outside in the lot at Creve Coeur Camera and Video, 9560 Watson Road, at 7 p.m. An automotive parade revs up at 10 a.m. Saturday

at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church, 11910 Eddie & Park Road. A car-avan of Detroit’s finest (probably no Toyotas or Hondas here) will come to rest, parking at Pole Position Raceway, 8800 Watson Road, for a 1 p.m. car show and subsequent fun day of activities for all ages. Kids will have all day to decorate their bikes ... at least from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m … in preparation for their own contest. Meanwhile, there will be arts and crafts. Did we mention this is free? Yep, It’s free. No charge. Gratis. But if you do get hungry or thirsty and feel like spending money, there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Or, baby, you can drive your car. The ‘grand’ South Grand neighborhood of restaurants, services and boutiques suffered greatly from a riot south of Arsenal last fall following the grand-jury decision not to indict the Ferguson cop who shot and killed Michael Brown. Windows were smashed for blocks. But plywood immediately replaced the missing glass, and art and hopeful messages appeared the next day. Today, the neighborhood is as good as new, and continues to recover emotionally. Now, colorful awnings that complement one another

st. louis

embellish storefronts in the 3100 block, from Baida Moroccan Restaurant to Rocket Century boutique and Basil Spice Thai in between. Though not many of these businesses were as badly affected as, say, Rooster farther north, the awnings seem to say, ‘We’re not going away,’ and make a visible commitment to the neighborhood. Basil Spice, for one, benefited greatly from the face-lift. The new awning replaced a tired blue one that made the place look, well, temporary. The food has always been too fine for that seemingly makeshift treatment. Barrel Bob, the orange and white roadside mascot that MoDOT uses to indicate construction zones, is alerting motorists to the highway work going on around Route 141 and farther west on and adjacent to I-64.

[ TT Trivia ] From what is Barrel Bob, MoDOT’s mascot, constructed?

Last issue’s answer | The serval, a sub-Saharan African wild cat, and the larger caracal, which comes from South Africa and Asia, are very similar critters. So much so that there’s a variety called the servical for what happened when an L.A. zookeeper decided to keep groups of the two big kitties together. A caraval or two also have been bred … although it is not clear whether this, too, was ‘accidentical.’

Widening is part of the project, as are retaining walls to prevent sliding hillsides. Traffic moves smoothly through the area a good deal of the time, except during the evening rush hour, way too slow for those habitual grumblers impatient for the improvements to be completed. MoDOT gives grumblers and praisers alike an opportunity to rate the construction zone on the Internet. OK, westward ho!

Now, with Town & Country in the rearview mirror, it’s on to Chesterfield. The new Missouri River crossing into St. Charles County has been partly open since the end of June, but those who haven’t had a chance to drive the smooth, brand-spanking new eastbound span of the Daniel Boone Bridge should be suitably impressed. One of the most gratifying features is the bicycle/ pedestrian lane, built as part of the project, which is scheduled to connect the Monarch Levee trail to the Katy trail early next year. (Meanwhile, the trail remains closed for about 1,000 feet on either side of the bridge.) But work continues day and night on the westbound span (which used to be eastbound), and is slated for completion by year-end. The original two spans, with the familiar green girder framework above the road surface, were built in the 1930s. The narrower one is carrying traffic for the time being, and the three lanes where there once were two can be a bit dicey for some drivers. (Well, for me, at least.)

TOWN TALK

[ASSET$& ANSWERs Q “ “

by tony di martino

I’d like to retire within the next five years, but I took quite a hit when the market crashed in ‘08. I’ve recovered most of my losses, but what should I be doing now to protect my money so I’ll have enough to live on when I stop working?

You are not alone with this concern. Another crash like ‘08 could force you to work longer than you choose. One of the biggest mistakes I see in people moving close to retirement, or recently retired, is too much risk in their portfolio. As you’re beginning your journey into your retirement years, too much money in the market can be considered a huge gamble. This is the third time in the last 15 years the market has hit an all-time high. The last two times it happened, the market eventually crashed by more than 40 percent. And as we’ve learned the hard way, when the stock market crashes it can take several years to make back your money. If you’re taking income, then you may never make up for the loss. One easy rule to calculate your level of risk is the Rule of 100. If you subtract your age from 100, this tells you how much risk you should take. So if you’re 60, no more than 40 percent of your money should be at risk in stocks. The rest should be in a safe place where your principal is protected from market decline. Most importantly, do not attempt to figure this out on your own. Everyone’s situation is unique. There are qualified advisers who are ready and willing to help you maximize and protect your retirement income.

Creating a successful financial plan to achieve your goals and objectives within a five-year timeframe requires trust and confidence. This means a sound relationship with a financial adviser who clearly understands your goals and possesses the right toolkit to accomplish them. He or she also has the expertise, knowledge and ability to help you deal with any behavioral biases or preconceived conclusions you might have about the market that could lead to damaging decisions. The first and most critical step when constructing a sound financial plan for retirement is calculating your ultimate goals and objectives. Given a five-year timeframe, you can develop a solid strategy. The goal is to create a portfolio that enables you to stay fully invested in order to capture the appropriate returns to satisfy your retirement needs. Developing such a portfolio requires dynamic risk management tactics. Risk management typically involves using alternative assets and strategies that help create an uncorrelated return stream with the market to help minimize market drawdowns, such as the one that occurred in 2008. Finally, it’s important to work with an adviser who can maintain a solid feedback loop to address any issues that may be worrying you. Communication is paramount if you want to create and retain a holistic financial plan and stay as fully invested as possible to achieve your goals.

[bookshelf the novel neighbor book club by karyn meyer About the club If you love bingo and reading, The Novel Neighbor has a book club for you. Owner Holland Saltsman, who opened the charming local bookstore in Webster Groves in September, has created a fun way to choose the club’s next read. “I made bingo cards to pass out at the store to encourage people to read outside of their comfort zone,” she says. “They’re great for summer reading.” Every member gets a card, and the group tries to choose books that will fill more than one square. For example, next month’s novel, Ancillary Sword, fills both ‘written by a local author’ and ‘sci-fi.’ “If you get a bingo, you’re entered into a drawing,” Saltsman explains. “A blackout (filling the entire card) gets you a chance for a bigger prize—24 books is a lot!” The club also is unique because its members vary each month. “I already was involved in a book club when I opened the store, so The Novel Neighbor absorbed it and we started meeting here the second Monday of every month,” Saltsman explains. “There are still about three original members.” She says since it’s not a consistent group, no one feels left out or like they’ve missed anything. “Every week new people find the store and get interested in the club. Everyone is welcome!” About the book Only the Strong takes place in the 1970s in

North St. Louis during rapid social and political change. It explores the challenges and rewards of love in a quintessential American community that faces heartbreak and violence.

[ opinions ]

»

Only the Strong is set during a time when MLK’s assassination was fresh in everyone’s minds, and Delmar served as the dividing line between the races of the Gateway City. Asim used the mood of the time to create passionate characters with separate, yet interconnected and well-developed storylines. I enjoyed this unique novel—one I would not have found if not for the book club. — Anne Warfield

»

Tender, tough, complex characters living within the backdrop of a 1970s St. Louis. Much of this book still rings true to the struggles St. Louis faces with race, division and social stratification, yet it manages to move each character forward with glimpses of a new possible future.

method that is very minimalistic.” It is imperative to protect the various areas of the brain as much as possible in order not to disturb key functions. “Complications related to tissue injury are dependent upon location,” Coppens says. “Some surgeries can be high risk if we are close to areas that control motor function, speech and the ability to see.” BrainPath mitigates that risk by combining the latest capabilities in brain imaging with a surgical approach that guides surgical instruments through natural folds in tissues rather than dissecting those tissues. The technology was developed by Canadian surgeons and is sold by NICO Corporation of Indianapolis. The system uses imaging techniques and computer software to guide a cylindrical cannula that is 13.5 millimeters (half an inch) in diameter. It is placed into an opening in the skull slightly smaller than a dime and guided to the abnormality by gently displacing brain tissues as it slips past them. Surgical instruments then travel through the cannula to perform the needed procedure, such as removing a tumor. Brain tissues return to their normal positions when the device is removed. This technology is permitting neurosurgeons to explore new approaches to strokes deep within the brain, Coppens says. “We have reopened that field,” he notes. “There is hope that we may have a very significant impact by operating earlier on people who have hemorrhagic strokes. By doing a surgery that can be very targeted in an emergent setting, with very minimal disruption of the brain, we can prevent them from reaching the point where they are so devastating.” “There are a lot of encouraging results.”

man’s-land two or three decades ago. There were tumors that were believed to be inaccessible because they were so deep in the brain, and there were limitations even in our ability to visualize them,” says Dr. Jeroen Coppens, a SLUCare neurosurgeon at Saint Louis University Hospital. He is the first specialist in Missouri trained to apply BrainPath technology to surgery, which allows tumors and hemorrhages to be treated deep in the brain with minimal disturbance of delicate tissues. “BrainPath uses all of today’s innovations in pre-operative imaging and other technologies to permit us to navigate through the brain into deep locations,” Coppens says. “Now the openings we need to make are smaller, and we can take a targeted approach directly to the abnormality. We do the surgery with very minimal disruption of surrounding structures, which leads to less risk, better outcomes, faster healing and shorter hospital stays.” The adult brain weighs only 3 pounds but is packed with billions of neurons, cells that enable the feeling of sensations, control of movements, storage of memories and processing of decisions. The neurons are linked by millions of fibrous axons, some up to an inch in length, that connect through trillions of synapses. “The brain is a little bit firmer than Jell-O,” explains Coppens, a neurosurgeon with SLUCare Physician Group. “It has crevices and fibers running through it. The cells can have very long fibers. When there are abnormalities deep in the brain, you have to go through normal structures to go to that depth. Of course, you want a

It was the first time I’ve seen a Max & Louie show, and I was impressed from the start with its first-rate production values. Dunsai Dai’s impeccably wrought scenic design gives us a telling glimpse of George’s life with her companion, ‘Childie.’ Cyndi Lohrmann’s fun and sometimes hilarious costumes preview nuances of character that come only later. In all, the creation of this show was top drawer. Sister George is a play about identity, love and loss and the freakish way we damage the people we love most. Frank Marcus’ 1965 play was made into a movie in 1968, and received an unusual X rating by the day’s standards. In viewing the play in 2015, it feels that the rating came less from the lesbian relationship between George and Childie and more from the idea that George identifies as a man, and from the dominant/submissive relationship between the two. One of our favorite actors, Lavonne Byers, plays June Buckridge, herself an actor who portrays Sister George on a beloved British radio show. Byers’ George wears the trappings of womanhood but walks, talks, drinks and smokes like a man, the man she believes herself to be. It is a most difficult characterization, her hard shell and demeanor encircling a spun-glass center. Byers’ ability to traverse that space between audacity and fragility and her willingness to delve into the darkest parts of the human heart, as well as her perfect diction and seemingly effortless physicalities, are why she is the consummate performer, why other actors look to her for vision, and why I am captivated every time I see her work. She is in great company. Her onstage companions, Erin Kelley’s Mercy Croft and Shannon Nara’s Childie, are great foils for George. Kelley shines in her recital of Sister George’s ‘demise’ and has a lovely scene with Nara. Nara, in turn, has a delightful scene with Byers where they personify the devoted and loving relationship they both imagine. Director Brooke Edwards adroitly leads this exceptional group of women into the abyss of human frailty so that we may examine our own lives, maybe not with the same excellent pacing, but in our own time, in our own way.

Replacing a corner burger joint about six months ago, Lucky Buddha won’t have to rely at all on luck for its success. The Asian pub—dimly lit and dominated by a large bar and very cool anime figures on the walls—offers interesting flavors in overall very satisfying dishes. And with prices hovering around the $10 range, it’s pretty darn attractive for a casual meal. The Tom Yum Goons ($7) are an upscale version of Crab Rangoon, only these have actual crabmeat (a little) and the cream cheese base is more saucy than creamy. Best of all are the skins, which are excellent: doughy and crisp with no hint of oil. The Vegetarian Thai Spring Rolls ($5.50) were irreproachably fresh with crisp ingredients (napa, bell peppers, lettuce, cilantro, enoki), but their wrapping was very sticky and fell apart too easily. The Gyozas ($7) had delicious pork filling and well-browned delicate skins, but you might pass on the accompanying peanut sauce, which just tasted like sticky peanut butter. If you’re a fan of Thai fave Green Papaya Salad ($7),

this one is excellent, with plenty of tangy chili vinaigrette. The ribbons of crunchy raw vegetables (scallion, cucumber and bean sprout) are refreshing and colorfully dotted with sliced green beans and a touch of sugar. The steam buns here are very good, fluffy and doughy enough to stick to your ribs. Each order comes with two buns, and the ratio of filling to dough is ideal. The Peking Duck bun ($10) was heavenly, with sweet and pungent flavors. Rich duck meat shared the doughy pocket with crisped duck skin and thick hoisin-style sauce. Buns also include the requisite condiments: pickled daikon, slivered carrot, cilantro and a slice of jalapeno. The Char Sui Pork steam buns ($8) also were good, with shredded meat and a distinct five-spice flavor dominated by clove/anise. The chicken variety paled next to the other two. Our Pressed Tofu Bahn Mi ($7) was very tasty. Served on a long, crisped French bread bun, it contained pickled daikon, cucumber, carrot, cilantro and a special seven-ingredient Japanese mustard called togarashi

mustard—all excellent, but a little sparse: feed me! An order of Pho ($8) offered the traditional Vietnamese meal-in-a-bowl with your choice of proteins and noodles. We had ours with fat udons and for protein, crispy pork belly and fish cake ($3 each). The broth was beefy and delicious, teaming with seaweed, basil, bean sprouts, lime and Thai chilies. The pork belly and fish cake were excellent. Don’t pass on dessert; the ones here are innovative. Lemongrass and Basil Seed Cake ($6) tastes a bit like pound cake with poppy seeds, but the cake has a delightful spongy quality that is lighter, without sacrificing a buttery undertone. It comes topped with ‘lemongrass Asian ice cream,’ which is just as rich as the American version. As for the exotic flavors in the dish’s title, I have to admit they were not detectable. Neither cake nor custard tasted like lemongrass (probably a good thing). Also appealing, especially to adventurous eaters, will be the sorbet selection: seven exotic concoctions, from lychee and passion fruit to dragon berry and yuzu pear.

Trainwreck

Trainwreck, the screenwriting debut by rising comedic star Amy Schumer, is not as subversive or wickedly funny as many have come to expect from her stand-up routines, but it’s still a successful and funny rom-com that breaks some of the genre’s rules while following others. The film fits nicely with director Judd Apatow’s canon: bawdy humor with an emotional core. Schumer stars as a fictionalized version of herself. On the outside, movie Amy has a carefree, fun life: She lives in New York, works at a magazine, and has all the casual sex she wants. On the inside, she’s a mess. She evades feelings and intimacy with alcohol, drugs and rudeness. This is the part that’s so revelatory: Unlike the dewy-cheeked, barely-there heroines of more run-of-the-mill rom-coms, Amy is fully realized and allowed to be flawed and at times downright unlikeable—a character dimension normally reserved for males. When she’s assigned to write a piece on Dr. Aaron Chambers, a sports doctor played by an endearing Bill Hader (whose patient and best

Crow’s Feet and Forehead Fixes

Your eyes and forehead may be aging you, without you even knowing it. Forehead lines, crow’s feet along the outside of the eye, and vertical lines between eyebrows are common signs of aging. They’re also the areas most likely to be treated with Botox.

EEK! WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?

Noninvasive Contouring – Too Good to be True?

Even those with healthy weight and body size can struggle with problem areas. Pockets of stubborn fat in the midriff, waist and back are the most common complaints. But as with all things, there are tradeoffs if you choose to go the noninvasive route.

HYPE or CONSEQUENCES?

There are literally dozens of different noninvasive body contouring devices on the market, including mechanical, radiofrequency, ultrasound, cryolipolysis (fat freezing) and low-level laser therapy devices, according to Dr. Michele Koo, plastic surgeon with Aesthetic & Hand Surgery Institute. “The noninvasive devices all rely on the use of an externally applied energy to cause fat cell death or disruption (causing liquid fat to leak out of the cell).” There’s not one machine that will do it all, though. Typically, these tools target fat, loose skin or cellulite—not all of the above, says Dr. Terry Myckatyn, plastic surgeon at Washington University School of Medicine. Fat-freezing devices like CoolSculpting are the most effective at targeting unwanted fat, he says. “Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than other cells. Cells die over several weeks, and the immune system clears them out,” he explains. Myckatyn says while Lipodissolve received poor reviews, there’s a promising new FDAFIGHT BACK approved injection, Kybella, designed to melt away fat below the chin. Most other devices If started early, wrinkles in the forehead and eye areas can be treated without focus on tightening skin. Ulthera, for example, is a popular choice for tightening skin around surgery. “The fastest and most effective way to soften wrinkles is with Botox,” Ridenour the neck. It’s often used in conjunction with CoolSculpting, Myckatyn notes. says. “Botox eliminates harmful muscle movements and diminishes the resting muscle As for cellulite, simply removing fat will not take care of the problem, he says. A new tone that underlies wrinkles in the forehead and edges of the eye, also known as ‘crow’s device, Cellifina, has been cleared by the FDA for long-term improvement of cellulite. It’s feet.’” Botox is relatively affordable, but you’ll need injections every three to six months to a manual tool that flattens dimples by snipping the clusters of tissues in the fat under the maintain the effects. skin, that connect the skin to muscle. The most significant causes of wrinkles in the forehead and at the edge of the eyes are repetitive actions by the muscles of expression, says Dr. Brock Ridenour, a facial plastic surgeon at Ridenour Plastic Surgery. “Over time, these repetitive movements break down the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, leading to wrinkles. Age-related loss of fat around the eye, as well as excessive rubbing and squinting, also contribute to the appearance of aged eyelid skin,” he says. And let’s not forget the sun. Damage to the skin caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation also can accelerate the aging process, says Dr. Joe Muccini, a dermatologist at Midamerica Skin, Health & Vitality.

tweaking the body by Sara Savat

You know what they say about supply and demand and necessity being the mother of invention? Well, these days there’s increasing demand for less-invasive procedures, and that has given rise to an ever-growing supply of innovative technologies. Not surprising, when it comes to improving appearance, there is a solution for just about every problem area.

Kiss Aging Lips Goodbye

Have you noticed that your lipstick just doesn’t look as good as it used to? Unfortunately, it may not be the product but what you’re trying to apply it to. As we get older, lips naturally lose some of their volume and definition, making them look thin and not as appealing as they once did. Don’t despair; there’s a fix for that!

THE SAD REALITY

As we get older, the dermal layer naturally loses fat and muscle, causing lips to appear thinner. Additionally, the lipline can flatten and blur, causing a loss of definition (and running lipstick!). What to do? For starters, apply a good lip balm frequently, says Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, SLUCare dermatologist. Dry, flaky lips, which are more common as we age, make your lips appear thinner. She recommends inexpensive drugstore brands like Vaseline and Aquaphor. It’s also important to drink plenty of water and avoid things that dry your lips, like long-lasting lipstick and licking the lips. A good lip liner also might prevent lip color from running. Fillers are an easy and relatively safe way to add volume, Glaser says. “There is a brand new filler that recently hit the market, Restylane Silk, that is approved for lips and fine lines around the lips,” she says. “Another new filler, Volbella, has a very soft look and can erase wrinkles and lines without making the lips bigger.” Juvederm and Restylane remain popular choices, too, she reports.

THE BEAUTY OF FILLERS

Today’s fillers are made from a natural compound called hyaluronic acid, which is safer and lasts longer than collagen and fat injections. Another benefit is that it is naturally broken down by enzymes in your body, so it can be reversed within 24 hours if the patient is not happy with the result, she adds. “Don’t be afraid of fillers,” she adds. “You probably don’t recognize all of the good lips that have been injected. It can look very natural. People are afraid of looking over-treated, but it can be done in a beautiful and artistic way.”

LINES & WRINKLES

Most people associate fine lines around the mouth with smoking. In reality, that’s just one of the possible causes. Sun exposure, genetics and repetitive movements like drinking from a straw, chewing on a pencil or even the way we annunciate words also can cause wrinkles over time, the experts say. Over-the-counter and prescription creams probably do more for you before you develop these issues, says Glaser. Look for creams with an SPF of 30, vitamin C and retinol, which helps force collagen production, she advises. As for treating fine lines and wrinkles once they appear, options include chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing and fractional laser skin resurfacing, says Dr. William Hart, a plastic surgeon at Hart Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery Institutes. Deeper wrinkles require more aggressive treatments. One downside to these treatment options, though, is that they can affect your lip pigmentation.

A newer treatment option treats the dermal level directly without affecting the upper epidermal level where pigmentation is made. Radio frequency treatments such as Pellevé have been around for a couple years and are growing in popularity, Hart says. “The results seem to be more consistent and less obvious. It is also comparable in price to other options.” While radio frequency treatments cause no damage to the cells, they still trigger an ‘injury response’ that causes the body to create large amounts of collagen fibers to fill in the wrinkles and leave the face looking younger. Botox in small doses along the border of the lip can limit crease lines, too, Hart says. The best solution, however, is prevention, and that starts with not smoking and limiting sun exposure, Hart says.

PERSONAL TRAINING

IS OUR SPECIALTY!

[ the routine ] Every morning, I take a class at Wellbridge in Clayton. Depending on the day, it could be step aerobics, NIA (neuromuscular integrative action), Zumba, ballet barre or a weight class. The instructors are all great, which is key, and there is always fabulous music. I also love to bike outside, and I do that a few times a week. Some mornings before class, I’ll bike down Wydown Boulevard to Skinker Boulevard and back, which takes me about 40 minutes. On Sundays, I’ll bike to Forest Park and ride the trail.

Sandy Kaplan has always been active;

as a teenager, she remembers ice skating on the weekends at Steinberg Rink in Forest Park and going dancing with friends in junior high and high school. “I still enjoy anything related to music,” she says. “It’s part of every exercise I do except for riding my bike.” Kaplan, who has two grown daughters who also are very active, works out at Wellbridge Athletic Club & Spa in Clayton every morning. “I love that it takes me about 5 minutes to get to the gym, and it’s fun walking into a class and seeing the same friendly faces,” she says. She varies her schedule to mix things up. “I’m small boned, so I want to make sure I do a lot of weight-bearing exercises,” she explains. One of her main classes is a choreo step aerobics class, which she tries to attend twice a week. “It’s a workout for your mind and body—great cardio, but you really have to concentrate on the dance part of it, too,” she notes. “Zumba is fun for the same reason!” NIA is the newest exercise Kaplan is trying out. “It stands for neuromuscular integrative action and is an advanced form of fusion fitness, blending modern and jazz dance with healing arts,” she says.

“It creates a high-powered synergistic workout that is very joyous.” Another class she enjoys is ballet barre, which consists of about 20 minutes of weights before the barre exercises start. “I used to take jazz classes when my daughter took dance, so I’m familiar with the moves,” Kaplan says. “It’s good for posture and balance.” When she’s not doing something dancerelated, Kaplan is on her bike. “There is something wonderful about biking,” she explains. “It’s a great way to wake up. I love being on the road in the morning when there’s no traffic, passing the same people every day who are also out getting fresh air. I don’t do any group rides or go for that long, but I always want to ride my routes when the weather is nice.” Kaplan, who is retired after decades of working in development at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, also finds time for her artwork, an integral part of her daily schedule. She often can be found at Craft Alliance’s clay studio working on sculptural pieces for shows, galleries and commissioned projects. She plans to continue her routine as long as she can. “If I can ride my bike in the morning, dance and work on my art as part of my day, I’m set.”

A SLU study of sedentary, overweight, middle-aged men and women found that exercise and calorie restriction each provide distinct benefits in managing risk for Type 2 diabetes. Edward Weiss, Ph.D., associate professor of nutrition and dietetics, published findings in Diabetes Care that indicate that the combination of both, however, provides twice the benefits of either alone. “On the surface, it may seem obvious, and yet there are a lot of people who believe that if they maintain a healthy weight, it doesn’t matter what they eat,” Weiss says. “And others have an appropriate food intake but don’t exercise.” Researchers recorded the participants’ insulin sensitivity levels, a marker for diabetes risk that measures how effectively the body is able to use insulin. Both exercise and calorie restriction had positive effects on insulin sensitivity, but the group that did both saw two times the improvement.

» migraines and stroke in women

Women who suffer migraines are at increased risk for stroke. More women annually have a stroke than men, and SLU neurologist Dr. Eli Feen suggests that women actively monitor their stroke risk. “Some studies suggest that migraines with visual auras put a person at a higher stroke risk,” he says, noting that more women than men suffer from migraines. “We don’t know specifically how frequently these have to occur to really create a significant risk for stroke.” Feen also cites other factors that increase a woman’s risk of stroke later in life, including: eclampsia or pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, certain oral contraceptive pills, hormone replacement therapy and inflammatory diseases like lupus. “Any woman who is concerned about her risk of stroke should take the first, most important step of initiating a conversation with her primary healthcare provider,” Feen says. “I cannot overstate the importance of this!”

» new cancer weapon

New research published in Cancer Cell targets the energy source of cancer cells, potentially making it a powerful weapon to battle most cancers. Thomas Burris, Ph.D., chairman of pharmacology and physiology at Saint Louis University, has found a way to target cancer metabolism so cancer cells cannot grow and divide. Burris and his colleagues created a class of compounds that affect a receptor that regulates fat synthesis, so cells can’t produce their own fat. This cuts off cancer cells’ energy supply. The new compound is called SR9243, and it started as an anti-cholesterol drug candidate. “It works in a wide range of cancers, both in culture and in human tumors developing in animal models,” Burris says. The drug also has a good safety profile, being effective without causing weight loss, liver toxicity or inflammation. “It worked very well on lung, prostate and colorectal cancers, and it worked to a lesser degree in ovarian and pancreatic cancers,” Burris notes. Additionally, it appears that when SR9243 is used with chemotherapy drugs, it increases their effectiveness, as well.

Electrolyte drinks are OK, but researchers at SLU have nixed the use of salt or sodium/electrolyte supplements during training and competitions. Meant to replace the sodium lost due to sweat, excessive amounts of salt can be harmful rather than helpful, says Edward Weiss, Ph.D., assistant professor of nutrition and dietetics at SLU. “I recommend that athletes use caution with sodium supplementation, especially when daily intakes already exceed the upper safe limit of 2300 mg/day for most Americans,” he says. Athletes have long hypothesized that added salt would lead to more sweat, which would keep them cool and enhance performance, based on the principle of thermoregulation (the body’s process to maintain core temperature). Weiss and fellow researchers found that sodium supplementation did not impact thermoregulation. “While moderate sodium consumption is perfectly reasonable and should be encouraged, high sodium intake is associated with health concerns like hypertension,” Weiss says.

by stephanie zeilenga A romantic dinner. A cozy night by the fire. A cheerful kitchen. A serene, brightly

lit office space. The perfect spaces and the perfect environments all have one thing in common: lighting that’s well-suited to the task at hand. To achieve that, you need expert advice from people who understand lighting from the inside out. That’s something Holt Lighting Depot knows how to provide, having been in the lighting and electrical business for more than 60 years. Whether it’s for an indoor or outdoor space, Holt can help, says lighting showroom manager Carla Hunigan. “We work with architects, designers, homeowners and builders, and carry everything from affordable to specialty and designer options,” she says. The 5,000-square-foot showroom features approximately 200 brands, ensuring customers can find the lighting they need, no matter their taste or budget. And there is never a delivery fee, she adds. “Our selection is unmatched, and we make sure our showroom isn’t a single note—we always have an eclectic range of options,” Hunigan says. “Our showroom, located in the city, has a loft-like feeling to it—it’s refreshing and so different than walking into a big box retailer.” Holt has been a trusted name for more than six decades, Hunigan says. The company, which originated as Holt Electrical Supplies, is currently run by a father-son team: Sylvan and Ryan Holtzman. The lighting showroom opened four years ago, after the company discovered a need among its customers for quality fixtures and experienced guidance. Carla Hunigan, Ryan Holtzman, Sylvan Holtzman Now, the family runs both businesses, lighting and electrical supplies, concurrently. A benefit for shoppers at Holt Lighting is the variety of unique lighting inventory that can’t easily be found elsewhere, such as dimmer switches and lighting controls. One particularly popular specialty item is versatile LED tape lights. “We’re able to put this in most places lights can’t usually fit, such as underneath a vanity,” Hunigan says. “The tape also can be used in display areas, such as glass in upper cabinets, or it can be used for cove lighting.” To determine what goes into the lighting showroom, Hunigan pays close attention to her customers. “I find out what they want and what they’re interested in, and I keep on top of the trends,” she says. “I’m involved with the local design community and am always looking and listening.” The best lighting takes into consideration everything about a room, including its function, size and layout, she adds. Most shoppers could use more than a little guidance about this, so Holt Lighting Depot delivers personalized, boutique-level attention and expert advice to each and every customer to ensure they walk away with the optimal choice. “Our staff consists of professional lighting consultants and works with customers one-on-one,” Hunigan says. “They all have formal education and years of experience when it comes to understanding the architectural and design elements of lighting. We know the right questions to ask to lead customers toward making the right decisions for their unique space. We want everyone to feel comfortable and confident with their choices, whether they’re spending $100 on one fixture or $10,000 on a whole home.”

homework] Dear Homework,

Having lived in this ’20s-era Tudor for decades, I guess I’ve taken it for granted. I would like to spruce up the place, and I have a few goals. I would like to widen the circle drive to two lanes, dramatically upgrade the landscaping, paint the windows a different color, and perhaps remove the non-original ‘outer doors’ at the entry. Can I do these things and dramatically improve the Old Girl’s appearance? Sincerely, —ready for my close up

After

Dear ready for my close up,

The changes you suggest can make a dramatic improvement to your property if you first remove all the pokey little trees that block the view to your gorgeous home. As you can see from my sketch, the remaining trees still frame the façade beautifully, but now the entire composition can be seen in its entirety, at a glance. It’s a beautifully balanced design that needs nothing added. For your new color, I would suggest picking up on the slate roof colors and using a blue/gray for both the dark and light existing window trim. I definitely would lose the outer doors and open up the arch. Next, I would give the widened drive the feel of an arrival court by bordering it with an evergreen hedge accented with brick and stone piers. This helps reinforce the entry element as the dominant piece of the composition. Finally, I would keep the new landscape simple. Add a tall-growing evergreen to the left of the elevation, to balance the one on the far right, and then keep the rest of the plantings low, flowing and casual. Fill the entry stoop with overflowing potted plants. The ‘Old Girl’ is now ready for her close up. Thanks for asking, —Homework

Families, yoga mat-wielding exercisers and others of all ages crowd the booths of the Tower Grove Farmers Market, vibrant this time of year with the bright hues of summer’s bounty. Neighbors chat, live music plays, vendors cheerfully make suggestions on how to use their products, and kids squeal as they run barefoot through the nearby fountains. It’s a special place. Here you’ll find pattypan squash in a rainbow of colors, baby eggplant streaked in shades of purple and white, chunky heirloom tomatoes, freshly harvested mushrooms and peaches warm from the sun. You’ll find locally produced honeys, sauces and cheeses, and freshly baked bread. This year, the market celebrates its 10th season. It’s one of the region’s only independent farmers markets that operates as a nonprofit, and was founded after Patrick Horine and his wife Jennifer Ryan moved to the Tower Grove neighborhood 12 years ago. “We had been living in San Francisco and found we missed our farmers markets, so we decided to bring something similar to the neighborhood,” he says. Horine also founded Local Harvest Cafe and Grocery. To ensure fresh and local produce, the market requires that farmers come from no farther than 150 miles. At first, this proved a challenge. “Ten years ago, the local food scene

was very different,” Horine says. “There was much less production as far as local food goes, and we had to really search for farmers. We also had a hard time finding local artisanal food producers. Now there are new food businesses opening here all the time.” Since its founding, the market has grown tremendously, from about 13 vendors and 500 weekly visitors to an average of 60 vendors and 4,500 visitors, Horine says. It strives to go beyond being another place to get groceries. Its goals, outlined in its mission statement, include helping farmers and artisans market their products, promoting the sale of locally grown products, and improving the variety and quality of produce available to St. Louisans. “We want everyone to have access to healthy food, and food that’s fresh is also more nutritious,” Horine says. “We’re equally concerned with the local economy—when you buy local products, you’re keeping a high percentage of your dollars in this economy.” The market also strives to make fresh, local produce available for all, not just the well-heeled. “A few seasons ago, we started offering EBT (government food subsidies), and now we accept matching EBT amounts,” Horine says. “So if somebody comes and uses their EBT card and spends $20, we will then match them up to $20. It doubles their buying power.”

[ design ] of the month House location & type

»

A small, cottage-style home in South County

Goals of the homeowner

»

The homeowner wanted the kitchen to reflect her personality as a wine collector and a canner, and she wanted to be able to cook with her husband in the space. She also wanted to highlight her colorful dishes in glass-fronted cabinets.

Favorite part of the project

»

The back focal wall, because it really makes the space appear larger. It also showcases the homeowner’s dishes and wine bottles and houses a table that can be pulled out for more guests when required.

Favorite item

»

The lighting, because it reflects the homeowner’s interest in canning—it’s made of glass jars that you would use for canning pickles. I also love the fan, because its blades turn downward, making it more compact but just as effective as a regular fan.

We’re Expanding!

After eight years in corporate sales, Brian Akers was ready to ditch the desk job and become his own boss. “Real estate allowed me to utilize my sales background while running my own business and my own schedule,” he says. In 2012, he partnered with his sister, Kim Eaves, to create the Akers Eaves Group at Coldwell Banker Premier, which recently expanded to include buyers’ specialist Jennifer Maness. Akers lives in the South Hampton area of St. Louis City.

ALL IN-STOCK ITEMS NOW AT LEAST!

FAMILY AFFAIR Kim is very high energy and sometimes commits the crime of calling me early in the morning before I’ve had any coffee. But in all honesty, she’s the best business partner I could have asked for, and we couldn’t do what we do without her. FIRST SALE I remember the feeling I had walking out of the listing appointment with signed paperwork. Kim was with me. We high-fived in the car and felt like we had just won the Super Bowl. BIG DEAL Our biggest sale to date took place earlier this year in Town & Country for $730,000. IT’S COMPLICATED The most difficult part of the job is negotiating property inspections. Spending time talking about furnaces and roof shingles isn’t an ideal Friday night for me, but it’s all part of the job, so we take it in stride. WHAT SETS US APART In today’s climate, clients don’t want a salesperson, they want an adviser. They don’t want a sales pitch, they want information. So we put a premium on being the most well-informed agents in the area, letting objective information be our guide when advising our clients. BEFORE YOU GET YOUR LICENSE Being an agent isn’t as glamorous as it looks on HGTV. There are a lot of long hours involved and it can be tough, but for the right person I think it’s a phenomenal career opportunity. ADVICE FOR SELLERS Overpricing is a common mistake among people listing their homes in today’s market. Helping our clients get their home priced appropriately right out of the gate will help them not only sell more quickly, but also net them more money at closing. SECRET WISH If I wasn’t an agent, I would like to be a coach and speaker. I have a passion for public speaking and for personal and professional development and would love to share that with those who want more from their lives and careers. TIME OUT To relax and unwind, I like to play golf as much as possible. I also do some cycling and love to read books on personal development and psychology.
