[ letter from the editor ]
I recently had my first American Girl experience—not with the doll, with the empire. When my granddaughter was in town, I booked lunch at the American Girl Bistro in Chesterfield. We were ushered into a very pink cafe, with maybe four tables and a soda fountain bar where we perched on pink-patterned stools, in great anticipation of lunch with a guest doll, Lanie. She even had her own tea cup and saucer—doll-size, of course. Lunch was very lovely, with the usual assortment of kid-friendly foods that covered the most important food groups: macaroni and cheese, pink lemonade and fruit salad. And the lemonade was all-you-can-drink, providing plenty of fuel for racing around the store afterward to gawk at hundreds of the lovely 18-inch dolls. In a very foreward-thinking gesture, a box of ‘conversation-starters’ sat on every table, encouraging diners to have thought-provoking chats while waiting for their food. I pulled out a few of the cards and proceeded to discuss things like, What will you be doing in 10 years? and What is the hardest thing you’ve ever done? with my 5-year-old. Perhaps these were meant as good preparation for future beauty pageant contestants, but based on her answers, my little one showed no inclination in that direction. As anyone who hasn’t lived under a rock the past decade knows, American Girl dolls start at $115. In their defense, they have amazing hair that can be styled in any number of ways (just check out the on-site beauty salon) and limbs that move remarkably well. In addition, they are lots of fun for little girls to walk around with and take care of. And dress and accessorize. In fact, there is virtually nothing your American Girl doll will ever have to do without. Kind of like Paris Hilton or Imelda Marcos.

[healing mission Pediatric Orthopedic Project
by becky mollenkamp
ICU Nurse Jenny Selber and 11-year-old scoliosis patient Lisbeth in the Dominican Republic
Scoliosis is common and correctable. In the United States, the spinal
curvature is almost always caught early and treated, but in the Dominican Republic, impoverished children with scoliosis face a life of pain, ridicule and exclusion. The disparity shocked Dr. Madelyn Stazzone three years ago when she first traveled to the island nation on a medical mission. The pediatric radiologist joined her husband, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, and nine others from the medical field to perform scoliosis surgery on children at the Arturo Grullón Children’s Hospital in Santiago, the country’s second largest city. The hospital was a bare-bones operation with conditions that were subpar by U.S. standards. “Children sit for weeks on end waiting for simple treatments that would be outpatient here,” Stazzone says. The operating room was dilapidated, with duct-taped floors. Equipment was antiquated or nonfunctional. Wheelchairs, medications and even gauze pads were scarce. Despite the limitations, the children and their families were patient, kind and appreciative. “That’s what drives us to do more,” Stazzone says. Inspired by the trip, Stazzone started the Pediatric Orthopedic Project (POP) to make the Dominican missions an annual event. Initially a bootstrapped effort with team members personally securing donations of orthopedic equipment and supplies for their Dominican counterparts, POP earned federal nonprofit designation last year. The organization uses donations to offset the cost of eight to 10 scoliosis
surgeries each year, which total $80,000 apiece in the United States. POP is holding its second annual gala Oct. 23 at Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles. “We are ready to propel the mission forward and do much, much more,” Stazzone says. “There are so many needs. The sky’s the limit.” POP’s reach extends beyond surgery. The group educates the doctors at Arturo Grullón Children’s Hospital so they can continue this kind of work throughout the year. In its four mission trips, POP has operated on 34 children, and local doctors have operated on 60 more. “We want to teach them to fish, not fish for them,” Stazzone says. “The doctors want to learn so they can help their own people. That’s made a huge difference in patient care.” The numbers don’t fully illustrate POP’s lasting effects, she notes. In the Dominican Republic, people with disabilities are ostracized, so correcting a child’s scoliosis gives them the opportunity for a better life. One former patient has become a nurse, and three others want to become doctors because of their experiences with POP. Outcomes like that are what motivate POP volunteers to give up vacation time to work 12-hour days for seven days in a row. “What I got back was so much more than what I gave,” says Lisa Simani-Oren, a nurse practitioner who has gone on two missions with POP. “We’re helping an underserved population and giving them a chance to change their lives for the better. I feel very fortunate.”

a large volume of beer. So when it came time for my daughter’s senior trip last spring, I had mixed emotions. Everyone should have a chance to spread their wings before they head off to college, but the idea that she would be in Mexico drinking and partying to excess seemed wrong. Yes, my parents let me do the same thing, but that was before Natalee Holloway. Somehow, though, my daughter’s well-thought-out arguments elicited a yes—that, and knowing 65 kids from her class would be in Cancun with quite a few chaperones, me included. Then there was the other reason for anxiety. I had my daughter a little later in life, so I suffer from the oldest-parent-in-the-room syndrome. I traded my NOW card for an AARP card! (If you don’t understand this reference, it further proves my point.) I tried to keep a lower profile at her high school, since you could say I was ‘over involved’ during her grade school years. As a result, I didn’t know many of the parents. So there I was, the last few weeks of school, trying to make new friends. As the trip approached, I could feel the ‘new girl’ anxiety increase. What if I had no one to sit with at the pool? I could read a book. What would I do about meals? This could be a great weight loss opportunity. Who would I drink with? Well, I was still recovering from the shingles, so I really wasn’t drinking. The first day I plopped myself down next to the friendliest looking mom. As time passed, more moms and dads joined the group, and a daily rhythm began. One mom would arrive early to grab chairs. Another made sure that anyone who walked by was asked to join us. Two other moms saw to it that we ate and applied sunscreen. We had created our own family, one without any annoying parents! Actually, we were the ‘annoying parents,’ embarrassing our kids daily by doing water aerobics and dancing on the pool deck. So, here I was, a senior mom, and I finally made friends the last weeks of school. All that worry about fitting in was gone. And I managed to learn a few things, too. First, I still dance like Elaine on Seinfeld. Second, I should not judge people by the bumper stickers on their cars and the clubs they belong to. Shame on me! And finally, I am sad I wasted so much time before getting to know these very fun and funny people. As a few of us floated in the pool the last day, we determined that this loving feeling was going to continue. No, we weren’t going to organize a book club, but rather a drink-of-the-month club. I was elected president. So as these kids are beginning their freshman year of college, they need to know their parents will miss them, but somehow we will manage without them. Our first monthly meeting is scheduled already, and I suspect we will spend most of the time crying about how much we miss our kids—NOT. I am pretty sure our new taste of parental freedom is going to feel just fine.

[ talkof thetowns ] by bill beggs jr. One thing that happens as baby boomers age, and I know because I am one, is their vision starts to fail. Meanwhile, they hope their relationship with their kids is solid. Said kids are, after all, going to pick out their rest home. One they won’t be able to choose is a property that was to be built on Wild Horse Creek Road in the Chesterfield Valley because the owner, Vision Ventures LLC, filed for Chapter 11 in March. The property was sold last month at auction for $1.1 million. According to St. Louis Business Journal, plans were to build a $16 million ‘faith-based’ senior-living complex on the 8-acre plot, which is about a mile south of Spirit of Saint Louis Airport. Lord knows there’s plenty of ground available inside the levee. Another thing that seems to happen as baby boomers age is there are more and more senior living facilities popping up everywhere you turn. I haven’t visited a contemporary of mine in one … at least, not yet. Problem is, for all of us, once you’re over the hill, you really start to pick up speed going down the other side. Yikes! Designers, sharpen your pencils. And private developers, line up. Bring briefcases full of ideas and proof of solvency. The former police HQ at 227 S. Central Ave. is available, and Clayton officials are accepting proposals until the end of the month for the site. (I’ve got one, but no money to put where my mouth is: How ’bout a disco? With those concrete columns in front, the building has plenty of mid-20th century character. Anyone remember Jimmy’s, the club that was in an old
bank building on Delmar Boulevard in the 1980s?) RFPs also were sought for a parking lot at the intersection of Forsyth and Brentwood boulevards downtown; four responses were received by the time the clock ran out, but the city is mum about which ideas were put forth. At any rate, there’s still plenty of time for creative juices to flow for a third site, Hanley Road and Wydown Boulevard, now a parking lot a little larger than a third of an acre. Visions of high-rises probably are dancing in the heads of dreamers who can afford to dream big, at least until Oct. 27. A former exec of Paric Corp. has been found guilty in federal court of three counts of mail fraud in an investigation that alleges illicit use of a company AmEx card over four years, including personal travel, spa visits, and gifts for family and friends. Paric also paid for a country-club membership as part of the former exec’s employment. Paric assisted in the investigation that snared Brian Paluch, 58, of Kirkwood, formerly a vice president and the firm’s CFO. Among many other tawdry details, Paluch is alleged to have paid a law firm $5,000 as an incentive to hire his niece as a summer intern. He faces a 20-year prison sentence and/or a $250,000 fine on each count and is scheduled for sentencing Nov. 30. U. City isn’t big enough to include both Washington U. and SLU, but the metro is, and we’re blessed to be the only city to have not one, but two entrepreneurially
wired universities in town. In an annual ranking of the nation’s top 25 universities offering the best programs for entrepreneurship studies, The Princeton Review has Washington U. at No. 16, and SLU at No. 23. Got a business-worthy idea? Both universities have programs in place to nurture it. At Washington U., the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship is a campus-wide initiative that serves students in seven schools across the university, as well as the metro at large. The center’s flagship program, IdeaBounce, allows anyone to post ideas and receive feedback from a network of innovators, creators, investors and business people. The Skandalaris Center also offers training, funding and other resources for budding entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, for nearly three decades, SLU’s Center for Entrepreneurship has created innovative programs to encourage entrepreneurship through through training, opportunities for high school students, networking, mentoring and competitions. With much of our nation’s manufacturing capacity shifted offshore, it’s encouraging that the metro encourages entrepreneurship in such a big way. Miss Jubilee & The Humdingers. Well, don’t that just beat all? The ukelelestrumming Miss and her retro combo are slated to be one of the featured acts at the Old Webster Jazz & Blues Festival, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, for 11 1/2 hours on two stages off Lockwood Avenue. Let’s hope the gawkers and listeners leave plenty of empty street for folks to cut a … well, pavement … because Miss Jubilee plays music that goes way beyond just toe-tapping. If you don’t dance, you must not have a pulse. The big band of Humdingers includes a gal on sax, not that that’s so unusual, but she really rips it up. This is music that evokes the heady mid-1940s, when the good ’ol U.S. of A. was unstoppable and lead singers wore gowns. Of course, there’s more to hear from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., including the world-class Webster Groves High Jazz Band, Bach To The Future featuring Eric Marienthal, Marquise Knox Blues Revue, Matt Rowland … the emphasis is on blues and jazz, but expect some genrebending out in the street for this 15th incarnation of the beloved ‘Fest,’ which will be held rain or shine. But if it rains? Maybe more blues, that’s all. Families bring blankets and folding chairs and enjoy local musicians and food and drink from nearby restaurants. And street entertainers will amuse the younger throng members with juggling, face-painting and balloons. Got a ticket from one of those red-light cameras in St. Louis city? To pay or not to pay, that is the question that has been answered in drivers’ favor, thanks to the Missouri Supreme Court, which

last month ruled the devices unconstitutional. The company that runs the program, American Traffic Solutions, somehow managed to make lemonade out of this lemon by issuing a statement that posits the information gathered by the devices may be used in court. Whatevs. If you listen very, very carefully, you might be able to hear the ripping, tearing and shredding of correspondence from all over the metro. I received a ‘red light’ notice a few years back for making a right turn on red from Grand Avenue onto I-44 after maybe tapping the brake pedal once, but lightly. Wouldn’t want to wear out the pads prematurely, you know. But a camera has no wiggle room. The law allows a right turn after a stop, period. That said, I’m sure many other drivers do more yielding than stopping before making a right at a red light. In my case, I remember receiving more than one nasty letter from an attorney … in San Antonio, Texas … advising me to pay up. They must have weighed the odds and decided it wasn’t worth the postage to go after a scofflaw like me. However, I live in the city, and they’re not fooling about those tickets they issue if you’re parked on the side of the street when they sweep it the sixth Monday of the month, or whenever it is. If you don’t pay it promptly, the fine doubles. Why, it’s a tax on Procrastination Nation, I say! Because members of the nation have yet to pay the original fine. After I get a bill for double in the mail, I suppose they’re serious, write a check, and vow to park in the garage from then on. Anyhow, back to red-light cameras: The legal argument boils down to not knowing who’s behind the wheel. Why should dad get the rap if junior was driving?

‘Apple of My Eye’ The return of fall means it’s prime time for picking apples. That got us thinking about the meaning of a common expression—apple of my eye. We use it today to mean a favorite or beloved person, as in: The boy was the apple of his father’s eye. The phrase dates back to at least the Book of Deuteronomy: “He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye,” referring to God’s protection of Israel. Later, it was popularized in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream: “Flower of this purple dye, hit with Cupid’s archery, sink in apple of his eye.” In ancient times, people believed the pupil was solid and round, and nicknamed it the apple of the eye. The phrase was often used to denote something at the center, as in Israel being the center of God’s protection. Over time, people gained a deeper understanding of anatomy and realized the fragile nature of our eyes and sight, which led to the modern usage of the phrase as a figurative term for someone or something precious.

“My 14-year-old son Ridge has ADHD, so I contacted owner Cindy Cox Nieukirk for suggestions to help him at school. She asked to shadow him for a day to figure out what would help him in the classroom. She came to his high school and sat in on every class with Ridge. Afterward, we all sat down together to hear her suggestions, and she met with his IEP group to discuss his issues. I would recommend Cindy to anyone!” ~ Jacque Grafton

Lisa Broersma & Jack Hannum
6 | 26 | 15
by karyn meyer | photos by george street photo & video Lisa Broersma’s wedding day holds many fun memories for her, including spending
time with old high school friends and dancing the night away. But when asked her favorite moment, she says it was when she and her groom, Jack Hannum, were able to go off by themselves and “just take in the day and the moment.” The couple’s love story began freshman year of college at Arizona State after hanging out at a Greek Bid Day social. “I drove him to the mall for our first date because he needed a purple tie for his fraternity,” Lisa recalls. “We ate brunch and shopped, and we’ve dated pretty much ever since!” Six years later, Jack planned to propose to Lisa after her sister’s wedding in Florida. “We were packing and somehow I figured out he had a ring,” she says. “I’m impatient and he can’t keep a secret, so he told me I should look for it.” As she was on the hunt, Jack brought in the ring and got down on one knee. Since Lisa had just moved to St. Louis a few years earlier, she relied on Jack and his family for suggestions on venue and vendors. “Jack helped more than I thought he would,” Lisa says. “He went with me everywhere and helped pick the venue. I always knew I wanted something outside, and I loved the idea of getting married in a park.” She didn’t worry about the weather until the week before the wedding. “I started checking the forecast constantly, and it was supposed to rain the entire day. Luckily, it ended up being sunny and gorgeous!”

cover story
If you visit Community School’s website, you will see a video featuring the smiling faces and happy voices of students, parents and staff welcoming new head of school ‘Mr. Cooke.’ Most are wearing Cardinals gear, a gentle taunt to the loyal Dodgers fan who just moved here from Los Angeles. The school’s warm, friendly faces were an immediate draw for Bob Cooke when he first visited, he says, along with a 16-acre campus that invites exploration and the school’s focus on interaction in the classroom and beyond. Cooke, who started his post in July, received a master’s in education from Claremont Graduate University in California and a bachelor’s degree in history from Carleton College in Minnesota. His background in education spans more than 30 years (23 spent at independent schools) and many different levels, ranging from classroom teacher to middle school director and, most recently, upper school director at Brentwood School in Los Angeles. “This is my first role as head of school, a position I’ve wanted to take on for a couple of years now,” he says. “My wife and I hoped to move back to the Midwest, and I really wanted to work with younger kids. My main concern was finding a school where students are engaged in their education, not just sitting and receiving information.” For those reasons and others, Community School is a perfect fit, he says. Divided into a lower division for nursery through second grade and an upper division for third through sixth grade, the curriculum focuses on individualized instruction, with two lead teachers in every classroom. “Teachers really get to know the students’ strengths and weaknesses and can tailor their education for them,” Cooke explains. “In our recent transition meetings, teachers shared what they discovered about each student
New head of School Bob Cooke visits with fourth graders
with the teachers who will have them in the upcoming year. It was so clear how well they know the students, and not just their academic strengths, but also their social and emotional lives. It’s a place that does an extraordinary job of meeting kids where they are and taking them further.” Cooke also applauds the school’s mission of learning outside the classroom and offering more than the usual subjects. “Every kid takes music class, drama and foreign language,” he says. “There is something for everyone. If a child is not a strong reader but loves creating things, we have woodshop. There are lots of different ways to engage kids in learning. Our students are always thrilled to come back to school.” He notes the large, wooded campus with a pond and butterfly garden is more than just a pretty setting; students are always out exploring, measuring things for math class or catching tadpoles for science projects. “When the school was founded 100 years ago, there was this idea of not only living with nature and using it, but nurturing it as well. Students shouldn’t just be memorizing information, but instead truly involved and engaged,” Cooke says. A faculty sustainability committee embraces the school’s location and works on everything from recycling to gardening. “Kids at this age are very interested in the world around them,” Cooke notes. “They want to correct injustice and do the right thing. It’s neat we can help them with that.” Cooke is excited about the new school year, including recent remodels to the gym and science classrooms. “We also reconstructed the curriculum to devote more time to science, especially for fourth through sixth grades,” he says. “The school has beautiful facilities and is just a tremendous place. I still pinch myself that I managed to end up here. I can’t believe I’m getting paid to do this!”

Any place that serves Fritos as a dish has
won me over even before the first bite. In addition to ‘Frito Pies’ (chili-covered bowls of Fritos), this taco joint serves organic Missouri meat in its dishes. The menu is tiny—burritos, tacos and migas—but everything is freshly made and delicious. The taco meats are nicely seasoned, salty and well-browned. You can order them with lettuce and tomatoes or cilantro and onions, or both. You can eat in or carry out. Be forewarned: there are only about 15 chairs scattered among five tables, and a couple of counter areas. So you might have to wait to eat or, better yet, take it outside for a makeshift picnic. And that would be easy, since everything is served on paper. This place is very casual. The proprietors are a couple of transplants from Austin, Texas, and they bill their output as ‘Austin-style’
Mexican. I haven’t quite made out a difference, except for the devotion to natural ingredients. And that is a big plus, including in the flavor department. A Breakfast Taco with sausage, egg, potatoes and cheese ($3.90) was a standout, the whole ensemble working together in a symphony of flavor. The flour tortilla was soft, doughy and slightly sweet—I wouldn’t be surprised if they made those in-house too. The sausage, which definitely is made in-house with locally raised Berkshire pork, was exceptional. It was crumbled and crisped and fatty with flavor. The potato cubes, similarly, were browned on all sides, and the egg appeared to be scrambled over the rest, with just a bit of shredded cheddar on top. It was the best $4 I’ve spent. A Breakfast Taco with chorizo, also house-made, was just as good, only spicier. It was sprinkled with vinegar

and slathered in paprika to give it a distinctive pungency that was acidic, salty and slightly hot. For lunch and dinner, the Beef Fajita filling, which can be had in a taco or a burrito, is excellent. It’s cooktop-grilled sliced steak covered in Southwest chili spices. There are two sauces you can choose as a topping, a green and a red, each offered in mild, hot or crazy hot. These guys are onto something. They offer a tiny menu—basically tacos and burritos—but made with the highest quality ingredients. The concept is fast food, but great food. And at a price everyone can afford. They hope to take their concept well beyond a corner taqueria; if all goes well, their good-food tacos may be available in drive-thrus around town some day. I wish them luck, but if others appreciate what they’re doing as much as I do, they won’t need luck. The quality of their product will translate to success.

One in three adults nationwide has chronic high blood pressure, also called
hypertension. The problem is worse in St. Louis, where 40 percent of adults are affected, says Dr. Paul Schmitz of the SLUCare Hypertension Clinic. Left unchecked, hypertension can cause damage to the eyes, kidneys or blood vessels, and can increase the risk for heart disease and stroke, two of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Unfortunately, only one-third of hypertension cases are controlled, Schmitz says. “It’s the silent killer,” he says. “It’s up to us to educate people that while they might not have symptoms today, they eventually will have problems.” Opened about a year ago, the SLUCare Hypertension Clinic is the only one of its kind in St. Louis, offering innovative tools and strategies for managing hypertension, Schmitz says. Being specialized allows the clinic to better identify the roughly 30 percent of people who are over- or under-treated for the condition. Most physicians rely on a common in-office test for measuring blood pressure, but Schmitz’s team conducts a 24-hour assessment that paints a fuller picture of a patient’s situation. “We have techniques that simply aren’t available routinely in other clinics,” he says. “We do an entire analysis of risk to make recommendations for drug therapy and lifestyle modifications to better control blood pressure.” The clinic provides highly individualized care. Doctors spend time with each patient looking for causes of high blood pressure, including lifestyle factors like salt intake and over-the-counter medications. They also discuss traditional treatment options and alternative therapies like biofeedback. “We’re trying to look at each patient as an individual,” Schmitz says. “We work with them to tailor a regimen that fits their lifestyle.” Additionally, the clinic is using its unique equipment to conduct an important research study. Schmitz’s team is measuring changes in arterial anatomy before hypertension develops. They hope the findings will someday allow doctors to predict who will develop hypertension so treatment can begin earlier for better long-term results. Unlike some specialty clinics, Schmitz says SLUCare Hypertension Clinic doesn’t want clients for life. Instead, the clinic wants to relieve some pressure on overworked doctors who don’t have time to fully assess and treat hypertensive patients. “The condition can be de-emphasized in a routine visit because the primary care physician has so many other things to deal with,” Schmitz says. “We can help them diagnose and manage high blood pressure to save them that time.” After one or two visits, most patients return to their regular doctors for ongoing support in implementing their new personalized treatment program. The results have been impressive, Schmitz says, and the patient count has quadrupled since the clinic opened. “We feel pretty confident we can improve anybody’s blood pressure.”

Pressure Under By Rick Stoff
Whether your blood pressure teeters on the high side or skitters along the low end, it’s important to know your numbers. We asked doctors to explain what those readings mean, how hypertension and hypotension can affect your body, and steps you can take to keep your blood pressure in check to protect your health.
The Basics of Hypertension To paraphrase Mark Twain, a high blood pressure diagnosis is becoming as common as an opinion—almost everybody has one. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, can lead to heart disease or failure, stroke, kidney failure, and other problems. Protect your health by better understanding this common problem. ♥ The New Normal If you’ve been diagnosed with hypertension, you’re not alone. Nearly one in three adults has high blood pressure, and about two-thirds are 65 or older, says Dr. Marie Philipneri, a nephrologist and co-director of the SLUCare Hypertension Clinic. “The prevalence of high blood pressure has increased over the past two decades,” she says. In 2001, 26.5 percent of adults in Missouri had high blood pressure; today, it’s more than 35 percent. African-Americans in the state have about a 5 percent higher prevalence of hypertension than Caucasians. “Hypertension is the most common reason for someone to come into the clinic for medication,” says Dr. Anne Jacob, a family medicine physician with SSM Health Medical Group at SSM St. Mary’s Health Center. ♥ Measure Up For the uninitiated, ‘blood pressure’ means the force of the blood that pushes against your arterial walls when your heart beats. If the pressure goes up and stays high, it can cause damage. To determine your risk, your doctor will frequently measure your pressure. The reading includes two numbers—the larger (systolic) is the pressure at the peak of a heartbeat and the smaller (diastolic) is the base pressure between heartbeats. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control defines normal blood pressure as 120/80 or lower, and a person is considered pre-hypertensive above that level. Hypertension begins at 140/90. A person’s blood pressure can vary at different times, but if the numbers stay high most of the time, you’re likely at risk for health problems. ♥ The Why Most cases of high blood pressure arise on their own. “The vast majority of patients with high blood pressure, more than 90 percent, have essential hypertension without any identifiable cause,” Philipneri says. Genetics account for about 30 percent of high blood pressure cases, Jacob says. “If one or both of your parents has high blood pressure, your chances are twice as likely to have it, too. These are factors you cannot change beyond a point.” A small number of patients have hypertension caused by another disease. “Anywhere from 5 to 10 percent of patients have secondary hypertension, meaning a potentially treatable cause could be identified,” Philipneri says. These disease causes include diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid or adrenal gland problems, sleep apnea, obesity and coarctation of the aorta, a rare narrowing the of the heart’s main artery. Many prescription medications, such as birth control pills, pain relievers, hormone replacements and decongestants, can boost blood pressure, Jacob says. “Excessive alcohol use and illicit drugs can be causes, and vitamin D deficiency has been identified as a possible cause recently.” Personality type also can be a source of high blood pressure, she says. “If you have a hostile, Type-A personality or depression, that can be a cause of high blood pressure,” Jacob adds. Tobacco smoking, a high-salt diet, low potassium intake, and a number of over-the-counter and herbal remedies also may contribute. Continuing increases in blood pressure can be expected as we age and our blood vessels get stiffer, Jacob says. The years also may bring atherosclerosis, a disease caused by plaque accumulating inside the arteries. The plaque consists of cholesterol, fat and calcium that can harden and narrow the arteries. “As the blood vessels become stiffer, the blood pressure goes up,” she says.

Taking Control
With such a significant portion of the population struggling with high blood pressure, something must be done. There are options for getting hypertension under control, including lifestyle modifications and medications.
TOWN TALK ♥ Tipping the Scales? High blood pressure often arises from our genetic blueprint, so healthy habits alone generally won’t resolve it. “Some people can’t expect to completely cure their blood pressure just by weight loss or dietary changes because something else keeps it elevated,” Chung says. If your health and personal habits are contributors, however, cleaning them up can make quite a difference. “High blood pressure is common in people who are overweight or obese and people who enjoy a lot of salt in their diet,” Chung says. “Too much salt can cause the body to retain fluids, which causes higher blood pressure.” Patients can sometimes see positive results by changing their diets, losing weight and exercising.
work best for you. “Some people have high blood pressure when they are younger, then it begins to drop as they get older,” she says. “ But many people need to stay on this medication for life.”

You might think low blood pressure would be a great problem to have. But it can cause dizziness and fainting, and even be life-threatening in severe cases. Although there’s no specific number at which hypotension is diagnosed, it’s important to get treatment if symptoms appear.
♥ Mitigate Your Risk “Blood pressure is a marker of your overall health. It has to remain at a certain level,” says Dr. Jennifer ♥ Medications Chung, who practices internal and While lifestyle alterations can geriatric medicine at Mercy Internal help lower blood pressure in many Medicine Clinic on Old Tesson less-advanced cases, Klein points out Road. “If it is above that level, it that more advanced cases require a can damage many organs in your variety of medications. Blood pressure is very individualized, so hypotension is not diagnosed by a specific number. While some doctors consider any top number under 100 as low blood pressure, most define it as something that causes symptoms, says Dr. Joseph Craft, a cardiologist at The Heart Health Center in Creve Coeur. “Decreased blood flow to the head might make someone feel light-headed or pass out,” he says. “Prolonged low blood pressure causing decreased blood flow to the kidneys may impair kidney function, so the kidneys may not filter the blood well.” Ideally, Spencer says, “we want people to have normal blood pressure so the heart is supplying all of their organs with the oxygen and nutrients that are needed.” ♥ The Causes There are many things that can lower your blood pressure, Craft explains. “Dehydration can cause the pressure to be low,” he says. “Some medicines are too much for some people; the doses can be too high relative to the patient’s needs. Heart attacks and severe infections are other causes.” When young people encounter hypotension, the cause almost always is dehydration, Spencer says. She adds that congestive heart failure, critical illnesses and certain combinations of medications also can lower blood pressure. The latter include prescriptions given for depression and diuretics prescribed
to reduce swelling. Older patients are more vulnerable to aorthostatic hypotension, a phenomenon where blood pressure drops with sudden changes in body position, Craft says. “When some people stand, their blood pressure drops, and they can feel woozy, light-headed or nauseous, or even fall.” Compression stockings and adjusting eating habits can be helpful in reducing the problem, Spencer says. Rare diagnoses of low blood pressure may be linked to low salt consumption, she adds. “I have had a couple of patients who had hypotension and low sodium levels. They heard salt was bad so they cut it out of their diets completely.” ♥ Take Note There probably is little reason to be concerned if the only indication of low blood pressure is the reading on the gauge. “That usually doesn’t warrant monitoring, if you feel well,” Craft says. “If you want to be reevaluated, rely on your relationship with your doctor. It is good to be thoughtful, but if your systolic top number is between 100 and 135 it is not something you need to be very vigilant about.” If there are symptoms, however, “Don’t brush it off,” Spencer says. “It is not fun to feel dizzy every day. If you are feeling some dizziness or are feeling faint, talk to your doctor about it. The treatment can be just small behavioral changes.”

3 | Level Up Fitness Going gray isn’t what it used to be. What was once a nuisance of aging and
a look only the bravest of women would flaunt has now become one of the biggest beauty trends of 2015. Whether it’s accented with undertones of lilac or frosted from root to tip, going gray has never looked so youthful. Heather Costello, a hair stylist at Dominic Michael Salon in Clayton, opens up about this cool trend and the new meaning of being a silver fox.
Q | How many women have asked for gray hair coloring? A | I have had two clients who are not already gray ask to become gray, and several who have contemplated it. Many clients are curious about the trend and asking questions.
Q | What type of complexions work best with gray hair? a | I believe a softer, more violet shade works best on fair complexions and a deeper gray with
blue undertones works best for olive skin tones.

Do you have problems getting a good night’s sleep? SLUCare Physician Group sleep disorders specialists treat the range of problems that may keep you up at night and threaten your productivity, health and quality of life. Pictured: Dr. Raman Malhotra and Dr. Joseph Espiritu
Q | A lot of celebrities are going gray. Who are some of your favorites? a | I love Lady Gaga’s white-silver gray. Cara Delevingne pulls off the trend perfectly, and I’ve
also been seeing a lot of Dascha Polanco’s gray from Orange is the New Black.
Q | Highlighting or bleaching hair can make the texture drier—is this also the case for gray hair coloring? a | You have to lighten the hair to the lightest possible blonde before coloring hair gray. Doing this is a process that can cause stress to the hair, leaving it more dry and brittle than usual.

Q | Why do you think this trend has caught on? a | Most likely because of the increase in celebrities going gray and the versatility of gray hair.
special advertising feature
Most people can pull off this look—and gray hair is beautiful.
Q | Have you seen an increase in older women (40-plus) who are starting to gray and instead of trying to mask it, have begun to embrace it because of this trend? a | I have many older clients who ask what the process would look like. They are definitely interested in embracing their natural gray, but in their 40s and 50s they are on the edge of feeling that going natural would age them, so they put it off a little longer. Usually they think young gray clients are silly for wanting what they try so hard to cover up!
Q | Do you have advice for younger women contemplating this trend? a | Have an open conversation with your stylist about it. It’s not as simple as putting gray color
all over your head. It is a lengthy process first to get your hair as light as possible, and then to deposit color. It also will be a process going back to your natural color, so only go gray if you are 100 percent sure of your decision and willing to commit to it for a while.
Q | Would you go gray? a | I don’t think the gray hair trend is for me. However, when I naturally start to go gray I might embrace it, if I am fortunate enough to have a full head of pretty gray hair.

1. West on lead measured his options: (A.) A trump lead is not good against a doubled partscore. (B.) Leading a ♥ from Ace/Q could give up a trick. (C.) Leading the opponent’s side suit singleton is usually not a good bet. (D.) Since partner raised ♦s, leading the ♦ Ace to look at the dummy would be logical. 2. West led the ♦ Ace, 3 from dummy, 6 from East, and South the 8. 3. Counting tricks for the defense, West came to possibly one ♠, two ♥s, one ♦, and one ♣, five tricks. 4. Looking at dummy, West knew a ♥ play was needed. 5. West realized that playing the Ace and Queen of ♥s would produce only one trick if partner had a doubleton, so West found the key play of the Queen of ♥s. Declarer played the King from dummy, 10 from East, and 3 from South. 6. Declarer led a ♠ from dummy, finessed the Jack, cashed the Ace and then gave East their King. 7. Declarer then had to lose a ♣ for down one. 9. Plus 200 for the defense and a big score.

[homework: t i d e r c a extr Dear Homework,
We love our Tudor-style home, but it needs some landscape help. We’re not sure where to begin. Can you give us some suggestions? Thanks,
Tudor in Trouble
Dear Tudor in Trouble,
Your plant-free property provides a great backdrop for a ‘teachable moment’ about the relationship between architecture and landscape, as well as how to get it right the first time. You should always start out with an analysis of the given situation. In this case, we have a beautifully composed and detailed Tudor-style home with only one obvious drawback—an undetailed half wall at the living room terrace. While it would be possible to add some detailing here (perhaps a brick veneer ‘facing’ to match the house), it would probably be easier to just ‘plant it out.’ Beyond that, the landscape direction should not upstage the architecture.
evergreens now
—Homework
SCHEME A shows an approach that is often taken and initially
BEFORE
complements the house fairly well. Upright evergreens frame the front door, boxwoods hide some of the terrace wall, and a clump birch frames the right side. On the left, a Japanese maple is centered under the main gable roof; its color nicely complements the color of the brick. Another pair of upright evergreens are planted at the corners of the façade, and in time-honored suburban fashion, a shade tree is placed in the middle of the lawn. After the initial planting, it all looks very cozy.

As the second view shows, after five years of plant growth and deferred maintenance, the house has been overwhelmed by the once seemingly appropriate landscape scheme. The trees and shrubs no longer frame the house, they hide it. Even with aggressive trimming, it wouldn’t look much better.
later
SCHEME B The first impression of the second scheme is
that it is perhaps a little ‘underplanted.’ Still, the boxwoods hide the ugly wall, and a long row of planting boxes along the terrace both acts as a railing and provides the opportunity to include colorful seasonal flowers. Large pots frame the entry and corner, and upright evergreens have been pushed beyond the corners in anticipation of their growth. Any shade trees that might be planted will be placed close to the street.
The final image shows the mature effect. The boxwoods have grown into a formal, clipped (wall-hiding) hedge. The large flower pots and planting boxes are much the same, and the corner evergreens frame the house without blocking it. The architecture and landscape are now in elegant, yet simple, harmony with each other.

shaw nature reserve | gray summit If you ever forget how gorgeous this state of ours is, a short westward
drive down Highway 100 is all that’s needed to remind you. Shaw Nature Reserve, 2,400 acres situated on the northern edge of the Ozarks, is run by the Missouri Botanical Garden and features a variety of stunning native plant habitats, including wetlands, savanna, prairie and forest. A quaint visitors center and gift shop stands at the reserve’s entrance, where knowledgeable employees can suggest a walking route or answer questions about the property. General admission is $5 or free for garden members and reserve passholders. From there, 14 miles of trails twist and turn through and around the property, and it’s possible to experience all the native habitats in one, long walk. Each season has something unique to offer visitors. In the spring, thousands of daffodils bloom around Pinetum Lake. “It’s just a sea of yellow, and people who see it for the first time sometimes laugh because they’re so delighted,” says Holly Berthold, the garden’s public information officer. Later in the season, vibrant wildflowers bloom, particularly in the Whitmire Wildflower Garden, which includes a home gardening area that displays more than 800 native plant species. “In the summer, the place is magical; it’s really lush and beautiful, and the prairies are full of wildflowers,” Berthold adds. And in the winter, hidden treasures like an old graveyard reveal themselves, and the bare trees allow for expansive views across the rolling landscape. Shaw Nature Reserve has been around since 1925, when the Missouri Botanical Garden began to purchase land for plant collection far from the city’s smoke pollution. Its mission includes restoring and creating habitats for as many native species of plants

WHEN Open year-round, 7 a.m. until sunset WHere Highway 100 and I-44 in Gray Summit WHY To explore Missouri’s natural landscapes
and animals as possible. “We focus on native habitat management and restoration, which requires prescribed burning, correctly timed field mowing and a variety of other management techniques,” Berthold says. “When we do the prescribed burns, for example, we watch the weather carefully, because it’s a delicate window where there’s the right amount of moisture and little to no wind. When the right time comes, it’s all hands on deck and the whole team works together.” The reserve also is dedicated to educating St. Louisans of all ages about nature and native landscaping. The Nature Explore Classrooms which opened in 2008, is a collaborative effort between National Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation designed to address the growing disconnect between children and nature. The reserve also holds Native Plant School to spread awareness about native gardening practices. Beyond exploring the trails, visitors also can sign up for a host of outdoor activities, including paddleboarding, kayaking, running clubs and a variety of photography and art workshops. One upcoming offering is led by Sam Abell, a renowned National Geographic photographer. The Shaw Wildflower Market, one of the reserve’s signature events, takes place from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 11. Admission is $5, and the event, which also occurs in the spring, features a variety of native gardening and wildflower vendors and locally made products, including bread, meat, cheese, art and wine. “It feels like a farmers market, only the emphasis is on native wildflowers,” Berthold says. “After the hot months of summer, it’s so nice to be out there envisioning what your native garden could look like next spring.”

A ‘green’ home with solar panels built by R.E.A. Homes
land
For 25 years, Paul Horstmann, president and owner of Horstmann Brothers landscape company, has been doing his part to take care of the land, something he sees as more than just planting flowers and mowing grass. He understands the need to cultivate green practices not only for his business, but also for customers in their homes. The company uses leaves from fall pick-up to blend leaf compost, recycles plant pots and old equipment, and employs horticulture experts to help residential and commercial clients with unique projects, like creating rainscape gardens to promote water conservation. Rainscape gardens are a natural way to help with drainage issues or low spots in your yard. When installed properly, they can reclaim stormwater naturally, reduce sewer overflows and minimize basement backups. “Our landscape architect designs these areas with plant materials suitable to survive in very wet conditions,” Horstmann explains. “The plants soak up the excess water, helping manage water flow while also providing cover and habitats for things like birds and butterflies.” photo courtesy of Horstmann Brothers
Andy Ayers went ‘local’ long before it was popular. Fascinated with the industry since his first restaurant job at 16, Ayers accomplished his dream of starting his own place in 1979 when he and his wife Paula opened Riddles Restaurant. It was there, at the small, seven-table space on Natural Bridge Road, that a local farm took over supplying his produce instead of a company. “Thies Farm was right up the street, and I went there to get tomatoes for my family,” Ayers recalls. “One day, my wife said, Don’t you think our customers would like these homegrown tomatoes better than what we buy?” The light bulb went off, and they started serving homegrown tomato salad. That led to other produce substitutions, like green peppers and corn, and Ayers even used scraps to create homemade gazpacho and relishes. “Using local, more flavorful ingredients is an easy way to succeed as a chef,” he says. “Your goal is to blow people away with your food, so it was a no-brainer for me.” After five years, they moved to a much larger space in the Loop and renamed the restaurant Riddles Penultimate Cafe and Wine Bar, which they operated for 22 years before closing. By this time, Ayers had strong connections with local growers and chefs and thought there might be a niche to broker between the two. He established Eat Here in 2008 and now serves as the buyer and delivery service for local chefs who want local food. “I have a warehouse and tons of walk-in coolers, and I pursue products that are high quality,” he explains. Growers often call if they have a surplus; otherwise, Ayers simply chooses what he thinks will sell. “Sometimes my intuition is off, and I end up donating to a food pantry, and sometimes I have to scramble to get more of an item that was really popular.” While he says there is a limit to how far he’ll drive, he’ll make exceptions. “I found a grits mill operating since 1865 in Midway, Kentucky, which is farther than what I consider local, but I can’t find anyone better who sells grits!” He does direct marketing to chefs through an email campaign and says he constantly gets calls from people wanting to be added. “I send out a list twice a week of what’s available,” he explains. “Some customers order deliveries three to four times a week, and some just once.” Ayers says using local ingredients not only delivers superior taste, but also forces chefs to produce inventive dishes to showcase what’s in season, a mark of a true chef versus a cook. “It’s so much more fun for the chef, the staff and the customers! It turns cooking into an art form.” He agrees the farmers market movement has moved past the fad stage. “This movement has been very grassroots and organic,” he notes. “It’s grown simply from word of mouth. Small-scale agriculture won’t be about the smart kids leaving the farm anymore. It will continue to grow and appeal to people’s sense of community and desire for quality.”

Rainscape garden by Horstmann Brothers
He describes it as an attractive element that helps the environment on many levels. “We use very low-maintenance plants that also reduce the run-off of rainwater seepage going into nearby waterways and sewer systems for the metropolitan area,” Horstmann says. “The garden slows the water, which then stays on your property and is absorbed and used by the plant material instead of going into the sewer.” Horstmann notes there often are opportunities for homeowners in certain watershed areas to apply for financial assistance to install a rainscape garden. “It’s a win-win,” he says. “We’re helping create beauty and natural wildlife habitats while also slowing run-off and managing water.”
living
As president of R.E.A. Homes, a company he started in 2007, Jeff Bogard has a lot on his plate as a custom home builder. But he takes on even more responsibility, both to his customers and to future generations, by using green practices. “We are the only local custom home builder that’s taken a pledge with the nationally recognized Energy Star program,” he says. “There is a long checklist we follow to be able to say our homes are 100 percent Energy Star certified.” The guidelines focus on the best practices of construction regarding the shell of the home, or what’s behind the drywall, Bogard says. As a second-generation home builder, he understands what people want—especially luxury home clients. “They are looking for it all: comfort, durability and energy-efficiency,” he says. “Normal building codes don’t ensure these things; they’re just concerned with life safety matters.” Bogard says his company focuses just as much on the best systems and designs for what’s ‘underneath’ as it does the floor plan in order to ensure a consistent temperature in every room, less moisture and humidity in the house, and lower energy costs. “Proper orientation of the house, proper flashing details to minimize rain water getting inside, energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting and efficient insulation all matter when constructing a home,” he says. “The biggest misunderstanding is that these things cost the client more, but the reality is that the benefits from lower monthly utility payments and a more comfortable house end up paying for any higher up-front costs.” He notes many clients are taking it a step further by asking for an Indoor airPLUS certification (a sister program of Energy Star) to ensure better indoor air quality through things like low VOC paint and green materials.
the reality is that the benefits from lower monthly utility payments and a more comfortable house end up paying for any higher upfront costs.
He says the trend toward green building is moving inward from the coasts, where it’s much more the standard. “There are some municipalities in St. Louis that are forcing builders to be more energy efficient, but we’re not there yet,” he says, noting his clients vary on the ‘green’ level, with some choosing solar panels and geothermal heating/cooling systems. “We focus on sustainable luxury, a whole-house approach to green building, which will result in a more comfortable, quieter, energy-efficient home.”
