Exploring Modern Interpretations of an Ancient Art Form

August 31–October 14, 2017 Opening Reception: Thursday, August 31, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Take a visual voyage into the richly layered and visually complex world of encaustic paintings, created by three Bay Area women artists. The word encaustic comes from the Greek word enkaustikos and this art form was practiced be the Greek artists as early as 5th century. The resulting paintings are multifaceted and invite the viewer to look a little closer at the true color and the movement of the wax as it is “frozen” in time on the panel.

In the fall of 1974, a small group of Tri-Valley residents came together for the first meeting of what was to become the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House. The focus then, as it is today, is to preserve the home of “The Father of American Drama.”

Above: Eugene O’Neill & His Irish Wolfhound: “The one thing that explains more than anything about me is the fact that I’m Irish.” (Eugene O’Neill in a letter to his son.)

Tao House was saved because of their efforts, and is now maintained as the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site by the National Park Service. The site is open to visitors, and offers programs that celebrate O’Neill work and his impact on theater in America. Working closely with the National Park Service, the O’Neill Foundation provides educational and community programs at Tao House where playwright O’Neill and his wife Carlotta lived from 1937–1944, and where O’Neill wrote his most important and final plays, including Long Days Journey in Night, A Touch of the Poet, The Iceman Cometh and others. Eugene O’Neill—the only American playwright to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature—and also received four Pulitzer Prizes. Tao House at the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site remains a place of inspiration and beauty to all who visit even today.

Role Players Ensemble The Main Stage Season Friday/Saturday, 8:00 pm, Sunday, 2:00 pm Village Theatre, 233 Front Street, Danville

THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD by John Millington Synge

The Town of Danville and Role Players Ensemble Present the 2017–2018 Season Role Players Ensemble is celebrating its 33rd season of presenting high-quality professional theatre in Danville. We are committed to being a center of creative and theatrical activity in the cultural life of the community and an asset to the Town and community members. The axiom “art is meant to entertain, educate and enlighten” is a powerful one. Like the creative process, this season will go on a journey, with the hope of coming out a little bit differently on the other side. Otherwise, why take the trip in the first place? A phrase from Hamlet is especially poignant here: “thinking makes it so.” Thinking can bring joy or terror at a moment’s notice. Thinking can change people’s feelings from one second to the next. Thinking can either color an individual’s inner world or change an entire society. With this in mind, Role Players presents a season of plays that explores the various ways thinking can shape the reality of the world in which we live.

September 1–17, 2017 Produced in association with The Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House A young man comes to town with a wild story about killing his father. Instead of condemning him, the people of the village are fascinated with the tale and elevate the young man to hero status until his “story” follows him to town. Synge’s satire caused riots when it first opened and has been met with riotous laughter many times since. The most Irish of Irish plays, Playboy embodies the very spirit of telling tales!

ANGEL STREET (Gaslight), by Patrick Hamilton

October 20–November 5, 2017 Isabella Manningham fears she is going mad under the influence of her mysterious and dashing new husband. The stakes become deadly when a detective arrives with a theory about Mr. Manningham’s sinister motivations. Best known under the title Gaslight after its successful screen adaptation, Angel Street is a Victorian thriller that still resonates today.

ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell

February 2–18, 2018 After years of being held under the power of humans, the animals have driven man from the farm. Being considered the smartest of farm animals, the pigs decide to gather the animals together to establish a new “egalitarian” social order in contrast to the oppression experienced under man for centuries. Is such a society possible? George Orwell, who recently returned to the ranks of best-seller, spins a cautionary tale for our times and all times.

THE ROVER by Aphra Behn

April 13–29, 2018 Willmore, Belvile, Fredrick and Ned are sailors on shore leave seeking adventure and love. Each of them has a different idea of what constitutes said adventure and love. All of them meet their match in one way or another in this exceedingly funny restoration romp. Aphra Behn, a playwright and woman ahead of her time, truly launched the phrase “the battle of the sexes.”
