SEPTEMBER BOOK SELECTION

Hiking Club

Giant of the Senate By: Al Franken (September 12) From Senator Al Franken - #1 bestselling author and beloved Saturday Night Live alum comes the story of an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that. It’s a book about what happens when the nation’s foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

OCTOBER BOOK SELECTION Waiting for Snow in Havana By: Carlos Eire (October 10) A memoir of a young boy’s upbringing in a privileged neighborhood of Havana, leading up to Castro’s takeover. The son of an eccentric judge and his dashing wife, they and the older generations keep alive a notion of “colonial” Cuba, while Carlos, his brother, Tony, and pals find endless mischief and exude boyish excitement in the increasing sounds of gunfire and bombs, a portent of, as he calls it, “the day the world changed.” This is clearly a heartfelt, and even anguished, testimony of an adventurous but also threatened childhood.

NOVEMBER BOOK SELECTION Lucky Boy By: Shanthi Sekaran (November 14) This timely story is a heartbreaking one about an undocumented young woman who takes risks to make her way from Mexico to the U.S. which were more dangerous than she ever imagined as she leaves her family in hopes of a better life. Soli’s story is told in conjunction with the alternating narrative of a young couple of Indian descent, Kayva and Rishi, who want desperately to have a child but are not successful in their attempts to conceive. They are ultimately connected by a baby boy named Ignacio. Saturated with ethical questions about maternal love, privilege, boundaries, and the immigrant experience, this story tells itself without any authorial interference. It is a deep, compassionate portrait of the complicated relationships
