Safety & Security Safety Tips 1.
Don’t answer the door in a hotel or motel room without verifying who it is. If a person claims to be an employee, call the Front Desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose.
2.
Keep your room key with you at all times and don’t needlessly display it in public. Should you misplace it, please notify the Front Desk immediately.
3.
Close the door securely whenever you are in your room, and use all of the locking devices provided.
4.
Check to see that any sliding doors or windows and any connecting room doors are locked.
5.
Don’t invite strangers to your room.
6.
Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry.
7.
Place all valuables in the hotel’s safe deposit box.
8.
When returning to your hotel late in the evening, be aware of your surroundings, stay in well-lighted areas, and use the main entrance.
9.
Take a few moments and locate the nearest exit that may be used in the event of an emergency.
10. If you see any suspicious activity, notify the Hotel Operator or a staff member.
Fire Safety IN CASE OF EMERGENCY… Learn your escape routes by surveying your hotel before a fire. Count the doors between your room and the fire escape (the exit signs may disappear in heavy smoke). If you hear hotel alarms, your smoke detector, or people yelling – believe them! Many people have died in fires because they didn’t take alarms seriously. If there is smoke in your room, the air near the floor will be the most clear.
DROP TO THE FLOOR. Take your room key in case outside exits are blocked and you need to return to your room.
DON’T STOP FOR YOUR BELONGINGS! Touch the door knob to see if it’s warm. If it is, do not open your door. If it’s not, locate stairs to exit your floor. If you encounter smoke, do not go through it. Should you be trapped in your room, notify the Front Desk and fill the bathtub with water. Force wet sheets and towels around cracks in the door to keep smoke out. Hang a sheet out the window so people will know you are in your room. Do not break your window unless you have no other choice as you may need to close it to keep smoke out. If you must exit through smoke, drape a wet towel over your head for breathing purposes and stay low.
DON’T PANIC - you will have a better chance of escape! These recommendations are to be construed only as suggestions. Each person should use their own judgment.

Cannon from the battleship Maine: History of City Hall Cannon The Cannon displayed on the front lawn of City Hall is from the battleship Maine, which was destroyed by explosion in the harbor of Havana, Cuba on February 15, 1898. This event precipitated the Spanish-American war. The ship’s remains were eventually raised in 1912, and at that time Republican George A. Loud of Michigan forwarded to the Navy Department a series of resolutions sent to him by the chamber of commerce and the common council of the city of Alpena requesting the loan of a piece of naval ordinance of historical interest. In March of 1912, the Naval Department decided to loan Alpena a six-inch gun taken off of the Maine.
History of Alpena Incorporated in 1871, the City of Alpena overlooks Lake Huron’s picturesque Thunder Bay. The wood, cement, and heavy machinery industries of Alpena stemmed from a long industrial heritage that started with logging of the 1800s. Besides these industries, Alpena offers to the public an abundance of businesses along with a community college and a regional medical center. Throughout the 8.93 square miles that make up the City of Alpena are many inviting residential areas and recreational activities for its more than 10,000 residents and visitors to continuously enjoy. Thus, the City welcomes you to come and see how Alpena truly is a warm and friendly port.
The people of Alpena were ecstatic when the cannon arrived in Alpena on May 19, 1912. The common council planned a festive Independence Day for its unveiling, and more than 7,000 visitors flocked to the city, eager to see the unveiling of the cannon from the martyred U.S.S. Maine. Alpena is the only city in the U.S. that can boast a cannon from the battleship Maine. This silent memorial to honor the loss of one of America’s greatest warships still sits today in front of City Hall on the corner of Water Street and First Avenue.
History of City Hall According to a report prepared by Laurie Kay Sommer in 1986, City Hall is an imposing, smooth faced coursed Bedford Limestone Building that sits to the rear of a spacious city block surrounded by a large landscaped lawn in which a Spanish American War cannon is placed. The two story Beaux Arts Building measures 71’ x 53’ 6”, with two 8’ x 31’ extensions, a 6’ x 23’ rear extension, and a 6’ x 6’ portico. These dimensions go from a gabled central block with hipped roof pavilions to the front and rear. The roof is covered with red tile and the eave line is articulated with acanthus leaf ornaments, a two story pediment portico with an iconic colonnade, and a semi-circular arched entry arcade framing the principal building entrance facing First Avenue, while a smaller portico accents the Park Place entrance. Recessed semi-circular arched panels house the double sash windows on the upper story. A porthole window highlights the pediment gable ends and main portico pediment. New metal doors and windows now replace the wood originals. The original crowning cupola was removed in the late 1950s.
Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Located in northwestern Lake Huron, Thunder Bay is adjacent to one of the most treacherous stretches of water within the Great Lakes system. Unpredictable weather, murky fog banks, sudden gales, and rocky shoals earned the area the name “Shipwreck Alley.” Today, the 4,300-square-mile Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary protects one of America’s best-preserved and nationally significant collections of shipwrecks. Fire, ice, collisions, and storms have claimed over 200 vessels in and around Thunder Bay. To date, nearly 100 shipwrecks

In addition to helping to protect and interpret individual sites, managing the sanctuary as a maritime cultural landscape reveals a broad historical canvas that can encompass many different perspectives to foster an interconnected understanding of the maritime past. The maritime cultural landscape allows Thunder Bay’s maritime heritage to continue to unfold as new discoveries are made and encourages an increasingly diverse public to find shared meaning in this nationally and internationally significant place.
Northeastern Michigan’s maritime landscape includes the hundreds of shipwrecks located on Lake Huron bottomlands. Although the sheer number of shipwrecks is impressive, it is the range of vessel types located in the sanctuary that makes the collection nationally significant. From an 1844 sidewheel steamer to a modern 500-foot-long German freighter, the shipwrecks of Thunder Bay represent a microcosm of maritime commerce and travel on the Great Lakes.
