a great place to raise a
FAMILY
T
he population of the Beaver Dam area is about 21,000 people centered on the city, which is on the southeast shore of Beaver Dam Lake. Quality of life has always been a key attribute for Beaver Dam. This includes stewardship of man-made Beaver Dam Lake, one of the state’s largest lakes, with 41 miles of shoreline. Over the past century, the community has established parks on the lake and along the Beaver Dam River. The community currently has 20 municipal parks, with more in the development stage. Neighborhood elementary schools and a centrally located middle school and high school enable most students to walk to school, providing easy access for parents and families to participate in school activities and programs. In addition, the community is served by excellent private Lutheran and Catholic grade schools and the K-12 multidenominational Central Wisconsin Christian School in neighboring Waupun. Beaver Dam is also home to the nationally recognized Wayland Academy, the oldest co-educational college preparatory high school in America. The greater Beaver Dam area provides all the necessities of life and more. But for collegiate or professional sports, or for metropolitan entertainment, Madison is a short 45 minute drive away, and downtown Milwaukee is only 75 minutes away.
Photograph by P. Fritsche
Likewise, Green Bay, home to the Packers, lies 95 minutes from downtown Beaver Dam. A domestic airport in Madison and international airports in Milwaukee and Chicago (2 1/2 hours from Beaver Dam) provide access to the nation and world. With easy access to the world, the friendly, welcoming, small town atmosphere of Beaver Dam endears itself to new residents and makes it a comfortable place to live for generations of families.
NEIGHBORHOODS Beaver Dam lays claim to every home type, from 19th century log cabins, rural farm houses and urban Victorian homes to modern suburban ranches and two-story homes found in outlying subdivisions. This range of homes allows every buyer to select the home and neighborhood of their choice. Apartment options are plentiful and are found in every neighborhood of the city, again, in a variety of price ranges. Large Victorian homes, cape cods, bungalows, ranches and split-level dwellings make up the neighborhoods fanning out from the historic downtown. Beautiful, year-round, one- and two-story lake homes line the city’s shore along Beaver Dam Lake. Tasteful family and senior apartment complexes are intermixed with one-family and multifamily developments throughout the city. Condominiums and several assistedliving facilities are also available to serve those markets as well. Suburban subdivisions surrounding Beaver Dam reflect the same diversity in modern housing found anywhere in the nation. One plus: home prices tend to be more affordable than Wisconsin’s more urban markets, making Beaver Dam a favorite for some commuters.

rior to the arrival of European and American Yankee settlers, Native American peoples, including the Chippewa, Fox, Kickapoo, Sauk, Sioux and Winnebago, lived in the rolling prairie and marshlands that became Beaver Dam. Native Americans hunted and fished the area, and paid a special reverence to a source of natural spring water that they called the Sacred Springs, found in what is now Swan Park. A number of archeological sites have been discovered throughout the area and are being excavated and preserved, when possible. In 2016 Beaver Dam celebrated the 175th anniversary of the
10 | Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce
founding of the community. In the spring of 1841, Thomas Mackie and his family became the first permanent Yankee settlers to the area, coming from the new community of Fox Lake to the north. The Mackie’s built a log cabin, and were soon joined by other settlers. Beavers were abundant along the streams and river, constructing dams to provide their own habitat and food source. The Mackie’s and other Yankee settlers decided that Beaver Dam would be a fitting name for the new settlement and the river. Beaver Dam is proud of its history and is fortunate to have private citizens and civic leaders who have recognized the value of preserving the architectural heritage of the
community. A number of outstanding buildings have been preserved and restored throughout the community for use as homes, businesses and public facilities. The 1880 Spring House pavilion built for the Vita Park resort (now Swan Park) has been lovingly restored. The 1901 downtown train depot, owned by the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce, was restored/renovated in 2013. The city’s former library building, the Williams Free Library, was built in 1890
and today is maintained as the Dodge County Historical Society Museum, where a full history of the community is on display. Many private Victorian era homes, particularly along Park Avenue and surrounding downtown, have been maintained, restored and preserved as residences for over 100 years. Several downtown Beaver Dam landmarks have also been continuously maintained as businesses since the late 19th century.

ocals and visitors enjoy golfing, hiking, biking, swimming, water skiing, boating, fishing, waterfowl hunting and other outdoor sports throughout the spring, summer and autumn. Winter brings ice fishing, snowmobiling, ice skating, cross-country skiing and tobogganing. Within an hour of Beaver Dam there are at least four Wisconsin ski hills. The Beaver Dam Family Center & Ice Arena provides an ice skating facility year round and is used by local youth hockey organizations, the Beaver Dam High School Hockey Team, Swan City Skaters and for open skating sessions for the community, with ice skate rentals available.
DODGE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS The Dodge County Fairgrounds, just east of Beaver Dam, is home to the Dodge County Fair, which is held the third week of August. The Dodge County Fair was once known as the greatest county fair in the nation. Visitors from the 1880s through 1920s included train loads of people visiting from Milwaukee, Chicago and St. Louis, making the totals to the fair attendance in those years quadruple the entire population of Dodge County!
BEAVER DAM RACEWAY The Beaver Dam Raceway, located just east of the U.S. Highway 151 and State Highway 33 interchange, provides racing enthusiasts with exciting dirt track racing action that includes sprint cars, midgets, late models and more. The track operates from May through October, hosting special racing events throughout the season. Racing is held every Saturday during the season, beginning at 6:30 p.m. On Tuesday nights during the season, the track is used for go-kart racing. Photograph by P. YMCA The YMCA of Dodge County offers year-round athletic and recreational opportunities for the whole family. The current Y facility, which opened in September of 2007, is a 67,000-square-foot recreation playground. It includes an athletic center, basketball gymnasium, racquetball courts, swimming complex with an Olympic style pool and a separate water park and recreational acreage for soccer, baseball and other outdoor sports.
TOWER LANES Photograph provided by Dianne Bell of Must-Skis Pyramid
Tower Lanes, the area’s only bowling facility, offers yearround leagues as well as daily open bowling time.
GOLFING WATER SKIING Another summer pastime is the free entertainment provided by the Beaverland Must-Skis ski team, who perform just off Tahoe Park on Beaver Dam Lake most Sunday evenings and some Friday nights. Shows run from the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend to the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. The Must-Skis is an award winning, family oriented organization that hosts local clinics, and regional tournaments and competitions. Locals as well as visitors are invited to watch the spectacular shows during Beaver Dam’s annual Lake Days celebration each year. Children through adults of all ages are invited to participate in the Learn to Ski clinics.
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES & SERVICES DEPARTMENT Beaver Dam’s Community Activities and Services Department provides a wide range of activities for adults and youth, from preschoolers to our active, seasoned citizens. Programming expanded in 2016 with the department’s new community center downtown, The Watermark along the Beaver Dam River. Annual programs include outdoor activities in municipal parks and in and on public and private school district athletic facilities and fields. Indoor activities are held in various facilities with some programs also coordinated with the local YMCA.
Two quality golf courses provide golf enthusiasts with hours of recreation. The Beaver Dam Country Club is located just north of the city on Highway 33, along Beaver Dam Lake’s eastern shore. The Par-72, 6,000-yard course was designed in the mid 1960s and offers small elevated greens, mature trees and well placed bunkers. In addition to the beautifully landscaped 18-hole course, the Beaver Dam Country Club has facilities that include a full service banquet hall, capable of hosting two events simultaneously. Old Hickory Golf Club is located just east of the city and the interchange of Highways 33 and 151, on Highway 33. Established in 1920, it is one of Wisconsin’s most mature and memorable golf courses. Old Hickory offers a 7,000-yard, 18-hole golf course that also has banquet facilities, recently updated, for events of all types. Old Hickory Golf Club membership offers reciprocity with 20 other Wisconsin golf courses.
OUTDOOR RECREATION Beaver Dam Lake offers year-round recreational opportunity. Three of the city’s lakeside parks offer boat ramps to launch watercraft of all sizes for a nominal fee. A kayak launch was added to Waterworks Park in 2016 to facilitate paddle watercraft on the lake. Fishing, skiing and boating are popular three-season recreation. Each autumn, the lake is also a popular backdrop for waterfowl hunters. In the winter, Beaver Dam Lake is home to ice shanties for ice fishing weekends and ice skating.

The Dodge County Historical Society’s goal is the preservation of the history of Dodge County, with an emphasis on the preservation of the history of the largest community in Dodge County, the City of Beaver Dam. The society, which is an affiliate of the Wisconsin State Historical Society, was formed in 1938 for the preservation of articles pertaining to the pioneer days and to the early history of Beaver Dam. The organization has been located at different sites over the years but is currently housed in the former Williams Free Library building in the heart of downtown. The museum features changing seasonal exhibits plus the Tribute to Veterans permanent exhibit, permanent displays of famous native sons and daughters, including actors Brian Donlevy and Fred MacMurray, athlete Maddy Horn, authors Harlowe Hoyt and Raymond Gallun and naturalist/
explorer Delia Denning Akeley. Children love the One Room Schoolhouse permanent interactive exhibit for youth. Open in the afternoon four days a week.
DODGE COUNTY CENTER FOR THE ARTS One of Beaver Dam’s most successful homegrown companies, Advanced Products (now part of BurgessNorton Manufacturing), was founded by Peter Seippel. As part of a family legacy, the Seippel home was leased to the Beaver Dam Area Arts Association (BDAAA) for use as the Seippel Homestead & Center for the Arts until 2018. The group hosts changing special exhibits and art classes and special programs monthly throughout the year. The Association’s mission - to encourage and stimulate the promotion of the arts in Dodge County through community involvement, with focus on the visual arts - is fulfilled through activities through the BDAAA and throughout the community. The BDAAA also has a year-round gift shop with items any art lover would enjoy, but is particularly well stocked at Christmas time, when it becomes the Holiday Gift Gallery with only handmade, unique gift items of artwork, jewelry and more.

Education THERE IS A TRACK RECORD IN BOTH THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOL SYSTEMS IN BEAVER DAM OF EXCELLENCE, AND A STRONG TRADITION OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR EDUCATION.
I
n November 2016 the community voted to approve a $48,900,000 update to Beaver Dam High School and a retrofit of the entrances to all other schools in the district. The Beaver Dam Unified School District provides public school education in the community. Lutheran and Catholic grade schools and a multidenominational K-12 Christian school, as well as a private college preparatory high school, Wayland Academy, offer a private sector educational alternative. In addition, Beaver Dam is home to one of the three campuses of Moraine Park Technical College, offering a wide variety of two - and fouryear degree courses, some of which are only offered at the Beaver Dam Campus.
PUBLIC EDUCATION: PRIMARY & SECONDARY The goal of the Beaver Dam Unified School District (BDUSD) is to be a school district of excellence, respected for their individualized approach to education, academic rigor and their service to all students, parents and the community. Most critically, the district believes its commitment to academic excellence every day, for every student, is not only their job, but a moral imperative. Beaver Dam students learn before and after school, on Saturday, in traditional classrooms, online, on the field, in the gym and around our community. Beaver Dam schools are extremely proud of their accomplishments in all academic areas and of their role as educational leaders in the State of Wisconsin. You are invited to visit a school, attend an event or frequent the district website (bdusd.org) to review the District Dashboard – their goals and accomplishments. In 2015 the BDUSD earned a 20 | Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce
place on the Advanced Placement School District Honor Roll, an honor afforded to less than 5 percent of school districts across America.
PUBLIC EDUCATION: COLLEGE Established in 1912, Moraine Park Technical College has campuses in Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac and West Bend, and regional centers in Jackson and Ripon. One of sixteen technical colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System, Moraine Park offers more than 100 associate of applied science degrees, technical diplomas, apprenticeships and certificates; and offers them in traditional, online and blended formats. Moraine Park faculty are industry experienced and driven to help students achieve great things. Plus, the service learning and international education opportunities along with clubs, student government and more all provide for a full college experience. A strong focus on business and industry training helps employers maintain a competitive workforce.
PRIVATE EDUCATION St. Katharine Drexel School (SKDS) represents what used to be three separate Catholic grade schools in Beaver Dam. The combined institution celebrated 155 years of Catholic education in the community in 2017. The school is located at 503 S. Spring Street, just south of downtown Beaver Dam. SKDS guarantees a quality Catholic education for preschool youth through 8th grade in the community. St. Stephen’s Lutheran School is part of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). This private Lutheran grade school traces its roots back to 1896 in Beaver Dam. Staff
currently teaches kindergarten through 8th grade. The school and St. Stephen’s Church is located just west of downtown at West and Maple Streets. Central Wisconsin Christian School, where Christ is Central, is a pre-K-12 educational facility. Student families represent more than thirty Christian churches from northwestern Dodge County, southwestern Fond du Lac County and from neighboring Columbia and Green Lake Counties. The institution has a long history of significant family involvement and is a well respected non-denominational Christian school. Founded in 1855, Wayland Academy is an internationally renowned independent, co-educational, college preparatory, boarding and day school for grades 9-12. Today, over 150 years after Wayland first began educating young people, a Wayland Academy education is as valuable and important as ever. Wayland’s missions - to prepare young people for a successful college experience and a rapidly changing world. One hundred percent of Wayland’s graduates are accepted to colleges and universities, including some of the most selective and prestigious institutions in the nation. Situated on a beautiful fifty-five acre campus in the heart of Beaver Dam, Wayland’s twenty-five buildings house extensive academic, athletic and extracurricular facilities.

aith has been an integral part of Beaver Dam from the very beginning. Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians and others have contributed to the growth of Beaver Dam not only spiritually, but also as immigrant farmers, laborers and business people. Since then, many other denominations of Christian congregations, along with Muslims, Hindus, Jews, as well as other smaller religious groups, have become a part of the community. Besides building houses of worship to praise and thank God for blessings and to share in fellowship, these religious organizations have provided significant support and services for many Beaver Dam residents. urrently the City of Beaver Dam contracts with the Beaver Dam Area Development Corporation (BDADC) to facilitate economic development. The BDADC, a local non-profit development corporation, works with city government, the chamber of commerce and other local, county and state organizations to invite businesses to expand, relocate or add additional locations of their businesses in Beaver Dam. The development of multi-phase corporate parks on land annexed by the city and developed through tax incremental financing districts is an ongoing part of the city’s master plan, guaranteeing future business growth.
MANUFACTURING Existing mainstays of industrial and manufacturing commerce in the city include Apache Stainless Equipment (a manufacturer of stainless steel equipment for the food industry), BurgessNorton Manufacturing (a producer of metal parts through a powdered metal stamping process), Kraft Heinz Company (producers of half of the Philadelphia Cream Cheese made in America), Richelieu Foods (a producer of frozen pizzas) and a Wal-Mart Distribution Center on the city’s far north side. Mayville Engineering Company’s (MEC’s) coating division in Beaver Dam and the new corporate headquarters for Animart are examples of local business expansions.
Photograph provided by MEC
The latest MEC coating division is a 303,000-square-foot building which houses a new state-of-the-art E-coat and topcoat paint system and more than doubles MEC’s coating capabilities in the community. Venture Manufacturing, one of the city’s newer metal fabrication companies, has expanded into a much larger facility. Animart is a 30-year-old, homegrown business that serves the agribusiness community, primarily dairy and beef cattle farms, with pharmaceuticals and other industry products. Other major employers include Northwoods Paper Converting, Supreme Manufacturing, ETS and Vintage Parts. The community is also home to smaller specialty industrial businesses, such as Breuer Metal Craftsmen, which produces metal wrought items, handcrafted for a wide variety of business, office, industrial and retail applications.
RETAIL & SERVICE Beaver Dam has a wide variety of retail shopping venues, from the businesses in the historic downtown to new retail developments on the city’s edges. The original retail shopping district for the city was downtown. It is still home to a coffee shop, antique stores, a jeweler, auto repair shops, restaurants, a dry cleaner, a furniture store, a floral shop, attorney offices, insurance, real estate and other professional offices, hobby and gift shops, banks, the city’s only movie theatre complex and such institutions as the Dodge County Historical Society’s local history museum, Beaver Dam city municipal facilities, the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce and the Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre. 26 | Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce
Another cluster of business, including outdoor access malls with a variety of retail tenants, a department store with a pharmacy, a dry cleaner, a grocery store, including a bank branch, gas stations, restaurants, lodging facilities, a Walgreen’s and an automobile dealership, can be found at the Highways 151 and 33 (Park Avenue) interchange, on Beaver Dam’s east side. Along north Spring Street, between Mackie and Main Streets, there is a cluster of retail business that has been built on land that is part of the redevelopment of the former Monarch Range manufacturing plant property. It includes a grocery store which also houses a bank branch and an independent pharmacy. Other retail businesses in the area include a furniture store, a cellular store, an office supply store and a credit union. The largest concentration of retail shopping today in the City of Beaver Dam is found along north Spring Street. Businesses along this corridor include a wide variety of restaurants, lodging, gas stations, office space, strip malls with a variety of tenants, furniture and appliance stores, a bowling alley, auto dealerships, Verlo Mattress, Kohl’s Department Store, Dunham’s Sporting Goods, JoAnn Fabrics, Staples and a variety of other retail stores and gift shops. Brand new big box stores and Beaver Dam’s newest retail developments are also found along the County Highway B interchange with Highway 151. They include three auto
dealerships, two motorcycle dealerships, a Wal-Mart Super Center, a Menards, fast food chains, clothing stores, banks and a variety of other retail businesses. A number of restaurants and taverns, auto repair shops, several gas stations, a hardware store and the only marina on Beaver Dam Lake cluster along the southern portion of Madison Street and along County Highway G at the southern tip of Beaver Dam Lake.
AGRIBUSINESS Agriculture continues to have a substantial impact on the local economy. Both cash crops and the dairy industry continue to be mainstays of local agribusiness. Dodge County continues to be one of the top counties in Wisconsin in the production of vegetable and specialty crops. The county also lays claim to about 50,000 dairy cows, each producing about 18,000 pounds of milk a year. Total dairy production is over 1 billion pounds of milk annually from county dairy farms. Local farms continue to provide milk to local dairy processing and cheesemaking businesses. The Kraft Heinz Company plant in Beaver Dam, established in 1928, is both the oldest continuously operating Kraft plant in the United States, as well as one of its most technologically advanced as a cheese-producing facility. The plant turns out about 150,000,000 pounds of Kraft’s Philadelphia Cream Cheese annually. In addition to major food processors, such as Kraft Heinz, some local family-run cheese factories survive throughout the county.

The Changing Face of Manufacturing
in Dodge County
D
odge County area manufacturers have been working together on “Changing the Face” of manufacturing since 2013. As a cohesive and driven organization, the Manufacturing Business Alliance of the Dodge County region (MBA) promotes manufacturing careers to sustain and grow the manufacturing economy in the area.
With baby-boomers retiring and expected growth in manufacturing, the United States will look to fill over two million skilled jobs in manufacturing, according to Deloitte study based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pam Korth, Chairperson of the MBA, says, “We formed the group to be proactive in growing awareness in manufacturing and gaining buy-in from parents, young people and the community

at large, that manufacturing in Dodge County offers good salaries, good benefits, and professional growth. We are also working on communicating that the face of manufacturing is changing with technology, robotics, and lots of opportunities.” With advances in technology and automation, manufacturing employers need skilled trades. Manufacturers need a workforce with the ability to work with tools and specialized techniques, combined with digital skills, technology, and computer skills. The good news is that Moraine Park Technical College offers technical programs that are in high demand, including CNC/Tool and Die Technologies, Electromechanical Technology, Industrial Mechanical Technician, Tool and Die Technologies and Welding Certificates. While some programs are a year or two-year degree, Boot Camp programs are three months long and include an internship. Alex Bertram, a boot camp graduate, and welder at Apache Stainless tells his story, “I took a job washing cars after high school. I was on my own, and I didn’t have the money for college, and it wasn’t right for me. I explored the boot camp options at Moraine Park Technical College. It was the welding boot camp where I found my niche. I really like working with my hands, and it is a creative, artisan skill to work with stainless steel and TIG welding. The work

is custom and ever-changing from day to day. I’m a welder at Apache, and I’m already on a Continuous Improvement Task Force. I’m excited to be at Apache and being part of something and making a difference.” Another changing face in manufacturing is that the industry is winning over more women interested in the career opportunities it offers. Referring to the Deloitte study based
on the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women represent nearly half (47 percent) of the US labor force, and they comprise less than a third (27%) of the manufacturing workforce. The proportion of women in leadership roles also lags other industries, but the pool is significant. Ashley Tracy, General Supervisor, RLE & Attachments at John Deere Horicon Works tells her story, “I grew up in 4H and working on a farm. After high school, I looked to stay close to home in Dodge County. After an unfortunate accident, my twin sister suggested some college courses. After I finished college, I decided to take a “contingent” job as a Supervisor at John Deere. Yes, there was a risk involved, because it was a temporary to hire position. But it really worked out for me. Taking a job in a factory, I didn’t have the culture shock that I thought I would have. It was not a dingy or dirty environment. I have been promoted three times in six years. I am humbled and feel like I’m in a supported environment for women. I have all this, and I never had to leave Dodge County.” In recruiting for skilled jobs, employers are looking to fill positions by hiring veterans. Employers are finding that veterans are a good fit for manufacturing. Workers with military backgrounds have leadership skills, follow the

rules, and work well under pressure. In addition, the Wisconsin Dept. of Veterans Affairs offers employer resources and grants for hiring veterans. Lou Steffes, a welder/fabricator at Metalcraft, tells his story. “I have been in the military, active and reserve, for 32 years. I’ve served in artillery, infantry, and armory. My present rank is Master Sergeant. I learned about this position through a friend who recruited me to work at Metalcraft. Initially, the job was challenging heavy industrial work, and they had difficulty finding the right person for the job. For me and my background, I was very adaptable to the work. Since then,
As manufacturing companies throughout the nation look for skilled candidates to replace retirees and to help grow their businesses, the face of the manufacturing workforce is and will continue to be very diverse. Men and women of different ages, experience, and backgrounds, as well as different levels of education and training, will be needed to fill the skilled jobs in manufacturing. The MBA is an official affiliate organization under the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce. Since 2013 the MBA has been engaged in providing networking between manufacturers, business and educational institutions and works directly with the Wisconsin Workforce Development Board of South-Central Wisconsin for resources and support. MBA’s activities include marketing and communication programs and public events to promote manufacturing in the greater Dodge County region.
