welcome to BARABOO

Photograph by Bill Johnsen

The Baraboo area is nestled in a range of ancient mountains in south central Wisconsin, between Devil’s Lake State Park and the Wisconsin Dells. As the location of Circus World, the International Crane Foundation, the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Educational Center, the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center, the Al. Ringling Theatre, Al. Ringling Mansion and several outstanding museums, the Baraboo area is the destination for countless visitors each year. Once here, many visitors enjoy the local quality of life and strong economy and decide to make the Baraboo area their new home. As a result, Baraboo is one of the most rapidly growing areas in the region. The historic downtown square contributes to the feeling that history is alive in Baraboo. In a scene that resembles something from a Norman Rockwell painting, you’ll find a variety of restaurants, art galleries and specialty retail stores surrounding the historic county courthouse. During warm weather months, many events occur on the square including art fairs, markets and music. Complementing the downtown stores are other specialty stores and a variety of larger, national retail chain stores that serve the area and are located on the west side of the community. While treasuring its past, the Baraboo area looks toward the future of business in the area. Industries continue to be attracted to the Baraboo area because of its strategic location, both in the state and in the Midwest. Because of our location and the quality of the local work force, a number of companies of all sizes have chosen to make their home in the Baraboo area. Further contributing to the quality of life in the Baraboo area are our affordable housing options, excellent public and private schools (offering classes from kindergarten and into college), outstanding park system and an outstanding array of medical facilities including an acute-care hospital. Whether you are just passing through or are considering relocating your family or business to the Baraboo area, I encourage you to discover all we have to offer. Having been voted the 4th Best Small Town to Visit by Smithsonian Magazine, once you’ve visited Baraboo, I know you’ll want to return again and again. We’re one of Wisconsin’s finest destinations. It’s always a great day in Baraboo! Sincerely, Debra L. Bauer, Executive Director Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce

about the BARABOO AREA There are dozens of theories as to how the Baraboo River was named, but the earliest known reference is that a French Canadian fur trader operated a winter trading post at its mouth in the mid-18th century. The complete story of this fur trader can be found in the book A Man Called Baraboo by local author M. Richard Tully, which is available through several venues in the area. In the 19th century, Baraboo became the headquarters of several circuses, including the Ringling Brothers Circus, and thus became known as Circus City. Baraboo is home to Circus World, the former headquarters and winter home of the Ringling Brothers circus and now the largest library of circus information in the United States. This living museum has a collection of circus wagons,

and occasionally these artifacts traverse the streets of Baraboo and streets across the country, honoring our circus heritage in parades. The Al. Ringling Theatre, celebrating its centennial, is an active landmark in the city. This grand scale movie palace is larger and more elaborate than one would normally find in a town the size of Baraboo, owing to the financial assistance of the Ringling family. Several Ringling homes still exist, including the Al. Ringling Mansion and Museum located downtown. The nearby Baraboo Hills are designated one of the “Last Great Places” by the Nature Conservancy because of unique rocks, plants and animals. Devil’s Lake State Park, Wisconsin’s largest state park, contains large areas of the Baraboo Hills. The hills near Baraboo were created by glacial action, and in some points poke up from the flat terrain nearby to form a stark contrast. Apparently some of these features were created when a glacial pocket was formed during the Wisconsonian glaciation or where the advance of the glacier halted, creating some of the unique features of the Baraboo hills. Pewits Nest is located outside Baraboo. Just a short drive outside of Baraboo will lead to several picturesque communities which add much to the Baraboo area. North Freedom, located just 8 miles west of Baraboo, is home to Mid-Continent Railway Museum, a unique attraction to the area featuring rides on restored operating steam engines and an extensive museum. Driving a little further west between Baraboo and Reedsburg brings travelers to the Village of Rock Springs. The Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue and Education Center provides a safe place and comfortable home for abused, neglected and unwanted big cats and educates visitors about these extraordinary animals. visitors from far and wide for music, food and classic cars at weekly fundraisers for Big Cat Rescue. Merrimac is a growing community, called home by a mixture of both full-and part-time residents. Featuring the free Merrimac Ferry, it is both a functional regional crossing and a tourist attraction. There are snack bars at

queue areas on each side of the river, and an ice cream stand on the north. It is the state’s only free ferry, as well as the only ferry left on the state trunk highway network. The ferry is close to the head of Lake Wisconsin, as well as regional recreation areas, including Devil’s Lake and Wisconsin Dells. Peak traffic coincides with the tourist season and weekend getaway schedules.

Construction of “America’s Prettiest Playhouse” began March 1915 in downtown Baraboo. Baraboo’s leading citizen, Al. Ringling, had become fascinated by the beauty and majesty of the European Opera Houses, and decided a theatre project would be a fitting memorial gift to the city. Architects C.W. & George Rapp of Chicago were hired to design and plan the construction after the razing of The Wisconsin House Hotel on 3rd Avenue. After seven months of construction and a cost of around $100,000, the magnificent theatre opened on Wednesday, November 17, 1915, a day hailed as the greatest event in the history of Baraboo. The architects would go on to construct hundreds of theatres throughout the country.

fine building…The [raising] of the building means pleasure for many thousands in Baraboo and the territory round about while the owner has felt a zest in the successful realization of his desire. Ever since the destruction by fire of the old opera house a number of years ago, there has been no adequate stage where actors could play well their parts, but now Baraboo has a place, the beauty of which few cities the size of Baraboo From the Al. Ringling Theatre collection. 1915.

An item from the Baraboo Daily News typifies the praise that accompanied the opening of the Theatre. “It must be a source of gratification to Al. Ringling to know that his efforts in providing a playhouse in Baraboo is so much appreciated by his fellow townspeople. Every seat in the house was sold in four hours and hundreds were disappointed in not being able to be present at the first performance in order to show their appreciation to the one who made possible this 22 Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce baraboo.com

can boast. For the theatre-going public, for the stage folk and for Mr. Ringling, the [creation] of the playhouse is more than a pleasing pleasure. It is a beautiful memorial to the days when Mr. Ringling as a boy in Baraboo enjoyed giving pleasure to others. He can feel today that the opening of his opera house marks a new era of enjoyment for him and his fellow townspeople. Prior to the opening, on June 24, a grateful citizenry, recognizing the deteriorating physical condition of their benefactor, organized a day of tribute and testimonial. Thousands gathered on the courthouse grounds to witness the splendid appreciation addresses by local dignitaries. A memorial of appreciation was signed by hundreds and presented to Al. Ringling, who was brought in his car to pass slowly through the crowd. The first movie was shown on November 22. Sadly, less than seven weeks after the theatre opened, Al. Ringling passed away. A new chapter in the theatre’s history began in 1989 when ownership was transferred to the community-based Al. Ringling Theatre Friends, Inc. In 2015, the theatre will be under major renovation with a grand reopening planned for early 2016. At that time, programming will resume with films, the annual Lively Arts Series, and local music, dance and theatre productions. It is a gift Baraboo shares with Sauk County and the surrounding areas. n Deb Bauer is the Executive Director at the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce.

international crane FOUNDATION Take a Walk on the Wildside! In 1971, International Crane Foundation Cofounders Ron Sauey and George Archibald met at Cornell University, where they studied ornithology and shared a passion for cranes. The young researchers envisioned an organization that would combine research, captive breeding and reintroduction, landscape restoration and education to safeguard the world’s 15 crane species. In 1973, with the generosity of the Sauey family and the use of their horse farm in Baraboo, Wisconsin, the International Crane Foundation (ICF) was founded.

Over the past 40 years, ICF has developed unique collaborations and led effective community-based conservation programs, important research projects and innovative captive breeding and reintroduction efforts. These efforts have inspired international cooperation, helped improve livelihoods for people around the world and lead to the protection of millions of acres of wetlands and grasslands on the five continents where cranes live. In the United States, ICF advances efforts to better understand our native Sandhill Cranes, while helping reduce conflicts between

Today, ICF maintains a 225-acre world headquarters near Baraboo, Wisconsin, visited by over 25,000 people annually. Our site hosts a captive flock of approximately 100 cranes, including the only complete collection of all 15 species assembled. The campus offers live crane exhibits, guided and self-guided tours, a research library, visitor center and over four miles of nature trails set among 100 acres of restored tall grass prairie, oak savanna and wetlands. Open April 15–October 31, you can plan your visit by visiting ICF’s website at savingcranes.org or calling 608-356-9462.

Celebrate

BARABOO’S COLOSSAL CIRCUS HERITAGE!

2015 CIRCUS CELEBRATION,

featuring THE BARABOO BIG TOP PARADE No clownin’ around! It’s a circus every day in Baraboo! The city is the historic home of the world-renowned Ringling Bros. Circus and the current-day home of Circus World, the International Clown Hall of Fame and Research Center, the Al. Ringling Theatre and the Al. Ringling Mansion. While Baraboo’s circus heritage is proudly on display all year long, the community transforms into a circus mecca the last weekend in July during the annual Circus Celebration and Baraboo Big Top Parade. The two-day 2015 Circus Celebration will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 25–26, with the Baraboo Big Top Parade as the signature event on Saturday. “The sights, the smells, the sounds, the feel of the circus will all be here in Baraboo that weekend,” says Debra Bauer, Executive Director of the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce.

Circus Celebration The Circus Celebration will be chock-full of family-friendly events around downtown 40 Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce baraboo.com

Baraboo’s picturesque courthouse square, including circus-theme workshops and performances, children’s activities, live music, a classic car show, walking tours, a craft and antique show, a farmers’ market and more.

Baraboo’s galleries and shops will also be open, showcasing one-of-a-kind art pieces and musthave specialty gifts, while its eateries and streetside vendors will feature a wide array of delicious food, beverages and treats.

Baraboo Big Top Parade On Saturday at 2:00 p.m., the Baraboo Big Top Parade will wind its way around the downtown’s historic retail district. Consisting of more than 75 units, the parade will feature over a dozen antique, one-of-a-kind, wood-carved circus wagons from Circus World’s unparalleled collection. The parade will also feature Baraboo area descendants of prominent circus families, local residents who have worked in the circus industry, clowns, bands, elephants, horses and other animals. There will also be circus-theme floats and marching units sponsored by local civic groups, churches, clubs and businesses.

Baraboo’s Circus History Baraboo’s acclaimed circus history began in 1884 with the founding of the Ringling Bros. Circus. The Ringlings wintered their show along the banks of the Baraboo River until 1918. During those 34 years, the business grew from a small operation with a handful of employees to a circus empire consisting of America’s three largest circuses, each employing over a

thousand performers and workers. Circus World preserves eight of the surviving winter quarters structures, the largest such group in North America and a National Historic Landmark Site. Circus World is also the site of daily live big top circus performances, magic shows, children’s programming, elephant rides, tours and exhibits that commemorate the rich heritage of the circus, both around the globe and in our own backyard. “There are a lot of communities in Wisconsin that have a circus connection, but nobody has a connection to the largest circus of all time, the Ringling Bros. World’s Greatest Shows. That’s Baraboo and only Baraboo residents have that connection,” notes Baraboo native David SaLoutos, Circus World’s Performance and Marketing Director and Ringmaster. “Young, old, young at heart, old at heart, everyone will enjoy the Circus Celebration and Baraboo Big Top Parade,” adds Debra. For more information about the Circus Celebration and Baraboo Big Top Parade, contact the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce at 608-356-8333 or visit baraboo.com. n Keri Olson is a Baraboo-based writer and public relations professional who loves a parade. lakes and WATERWAYS Photograph by Brian Baird

Devil’s Lake - has both warm- and coldwater fisheries. Each year the DNR stocks the lake with Brown trout. Browns are taken mainly on small minnows or spinners of the steeply dropping east and west shores. You will also find Walleyes which are stocked, and Northern Pikes. Easy access fishing is available along the south shore of the lake where it is possible to fish just off the sidewalk. Please note that power boats are not allowed on Devil’s Lake. Visit devilslakewisconsin.com or call Devil’s Lake State Park, 608-356-8301. Mirror Lake - is a 139-acre lake with a maximum depth of 19 feet. The lake has three public boat landings. To use the landing within the park you will need a Wisconsin state park sticker. Mirror Lake is entirely no-wake, so boaters should be aware of the regulations

specific to this lake. This is not a lake for jet skis, but is a premier lake for kayaks and canoes. Visit mirrorlakewisconsin.com or call Mirror Lake State Park, 608-254-2333. Lake Wisconsin - is a 7197-acre lake with a maximum depth of 24 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from public boat landings. Some public landings include Summer Oaks County Park, Moon Valley and Palisade Street in the Village of Merrimac. Please be advised that if this is your first time on Lake Wisconsin you should use caution. Shallow spots with snags, the Merrimac car ferry cables and the low sections of the railway bridge are all potential hazards. Seeley Lake - is a 52-acre lake with a maximum depth of 10 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Lake Delton - is a 249-acre lake with a maximum depth of 16 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from public boat landings. Delton is very popular for powerboats, jet skis and fishing. The lake also shares the water with Dells Ducks and can be hazardous during busy summer days; use caution. Baraboo River - The Baraboo River flows about 100 miles from its headwaters near Hillsboro to its confluence with the Wisconsin River south of Portage. Access can be obtained at numerous locations, including Rock Springs, North Freedom at Fireman’s Park, Giese Park on Hatchery Road, several parks within the City of Baraboo and at the Glenville Landing. Wisconsin River - The Wisconsin River is the longest river in Wisconsin at over 430 miles and is known for outstanding Walleye fishing. The Wisconsin River begins near Lac Vieux Desert and flows southwest into the Mississippi River near Prairie du Chien. The spring Walleye run on the Wisconsin River is legendary and you can catch over 50 in a day with great catches coming below dams. When the water warms

after the spring runs, you can catch a large number of Smallmouth Bass. The rocky banks of the Wisconsin River provide ideal habitat for Smallmouth Bass. You can also catch big Muskies after they spawn in May below the dam, and the fishing can continue to be good through fall. Visit dnr.wi.gov for more information about area lakes and waterways.
