WELCOME TO BARABOO

Photograph by Yenti Eilertson

Nestled in a valley surrounded by the Baraboo Range, one of the most ancient rock outcrops in North America, is Baraboo, a south-central Wisconsin city known for its colossal circus history and groundbreaking conservation efforts. It’s no wonder that Smithsonian Magazine named Baraboo the 4th Best Small Town to Visit, as evidenced by its friendly people and the array of attractions, museums, recreational opportunities and places of interest. Where did Baraboo get its name? Accounts indicate that it may very well be tied to an 18th-century French Canadian fur trader named Francois Barbeau. Baraboo is also synonymous with Circus City, as it is the historic home to numerous shows, including the world-renowned Ringling Bros. Circus, and the modern-day home to such attractions as Circus World and the International Clown Hall of Fame and Research Center. Baraboo is a mecca for nature and outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Considered the father of wildlife management and the United States’ wilderness system, Aldo Leopold’s rural Baraboo property and famous “shack” are preserved by the Aldo Leopold Foundation. In addition to Devil’s Lake State Park, the largest and most visited of Wisconsin’s state parks, Baraboo features the International Crane Foundation, Ochsner Park Zoo, an excellent city park system and the scenic Baraboo Riverwalk. The community is alive with fairs, festivals, concerts, performances, art tours and other events throughout the year. Baraboo’s Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration was named among the Top 100 Events in North America for 2016 by the American Bus Association. Baraboo’s magnificent Al. Ringling Theatre has just recently undergone a $3 million restoration, returning it to the gilded jewel it was when it opened in 1915. Our picturesque courthouse square, with its vibrant retail and dining establishments, was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the new Downtown Baraboo Historic District. In addition to being a preferred travel destination, Baraboo is a welcoming, affordable and safe community that boasts a vibrant economy, with a variety of industries and businesses, quality schools, a two-year University of Wisconsin campus and an award-winning hospital. Whether you are here for a visit or are considering the community for your home or business, we invite you to discover all that Baraboo has to offer. Welcome! ABOUT THE BARABOO AREA

Photograph by Tom Williams

There are dozens of theories as to how the Baraboo River was named, but the earliest known reference is that a French Canadian fur trader operated a winter trading post at its mouth in the mid-18th century. The complete story of this fur trader can be found in the book A Man Called Baraboo by local author M. Richard Tully. In the 19th century, Baraboo became the headquarters of several circuses, including the Ringling Bros. Circus, and thus became known as Circus City. Baraboo is home to Circus World, the former headquarters and winter home of the Ringling Bros. Circus and now the largest facility preserving circus artifacts and ephemera in the United States.

The Al. Ringling Theatre, celebrating its centennial, is an active landmark in the city. Several Ringling homes still exist, including the Al. Ringling Museum Mansion located downtown. The nearby Baraboo Hills are designated one of the “Last Great Places” by the Nature Conservancy because of unique rocks, plants and animals. Devil’s Lake State Park, Wisconsin’s largest state park, contains large areas of the Baraboo Hills. The hills near Baraboo were created by glacial action. Just a short drive outside of Baraboo will lead to several picturesque communities which add much to the Baraboo area. North Freedom, located just 8 miles west of Baraboo, is home to the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, a unique attraction to the area featuring rides on restored operating steam engines and an extensive museum. Driving a little further west, between Baraboo and Reedsburg, brings travelers to the Village of Rock Springs. The Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue and Education Center provides a safe place and comfortable home for abused, neglected and unwanted big cats and educates visitors about these extraordinary animals. During the summer months in Rock Springs, Friday evenings bring visitors from far and wide for music, food and classic cars at weekly fundraisers for this Big Cat Rescue Center. Merrimac, featuring the free Merrimac Ferry, it is both a functional regional crossing and a tourist attraction. It is the state’s only free ferry, as well as the only ferry left on the state trunk highway network. The ferry is close to the head of Lake Wisconsin as well as regional recreation areas, including Devil’s Lake and Wisconsin Dells.

PADDLING THE BARABOO

Photograph by Howard Ogden

The Baraboo River at most times is a slow, shallow river with areas of shallow rapids. Under normal conditions the Baraboo is a fairly easy river to paddle by canoe or kayak. If the water is too low, you can find yourself getting hung up often and needing to get out and walk around shallows, but at other times, when the water levels are higher, the river can be quite

swift and should not be paddled by anyone other than experienced paddlers. At all times, it is important to be alert to changing conditions and aware that the current can be quite strong in places. There are sections of Class I rapids in the Baraboo city limits area. Most land along the river is privately owned. Respect private property rights along the banks. No camping is allowed along the river, but public and private campgrounds are available nearby. Sources include: UW–Extension Environmental Resources Center and Skillet Creek Media

4TH ANNUAL

BARABOO’S BIG TOP PARADE & CIRCUS CELEBRATION

Promises Weekend of Circus Fun

july 23-24

Photograph by Debbie Johnson

If you’re looking for a cornucopia of colossal fun, then mark your calendar to attend the 4th Annual Baraboo’s Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration on Saturday and Sunday, July 23 –24, 2016 in downtown Baraboo.

Photograph by Barbara Wilson

The two-day celebration will commemorate Baraboo’s stupendous circus history with concerts, children’s activities, a classic car show, an antique and artisan fair and more. The “center ring of entertainment,” however, will be the Big Top Parade presented on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. featuring over 75 traditional circus parade units and circus-themed entries created by community groups and businesses. “Baraboo will come to life in grand circus proportions on July 23-24,” said Nanci Caflisch, event co-chair and board member of the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration. “We have assembled a weekend of fun for all ages to celebrate our community’s unique circus history. The excitement will come to a head when the Big Top Parade steps off on Saturday. Young and old will be enthralled by the antique circus wagons, marching bands, horses and other animals and, of course, the cavalcade of clowns. This year’s parade will be bigger and better than ever.”

New! Top 100 Event in North America The award-winning Baraboo’s Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration has received new acclaim this year as one of the American Bus Association’s Top 100 Events in North America. Inclusion in this 38 Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce baraboo.com

prestigious list recognizes the Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration for its premier entertainment value to tour groups and individual travelers from around the world.

Writing the Pages of Circus History What makes Baraboo’s circus heritage so special as to warrant a weekend-long celebration and parade? The city has the distinction of being the current-day home of Circus World, the International Clown Hall of Fame & Research Center, Al. Ringling Theatre, Al. Ringling Mansion and Ringling House Bed & Breakfast. Baraboo is also the historic home to numerous circuses, including the world-renowned Ringling Bros. Circus, whose owners were the celebrated kings of the circus world. “In 1884, five brothers from Baraboo, the Ringlings, put together the most stupendous circus ever known to man,” explained Scott O’Donnell, Executive Director of Circus World. “This was a time before the internet, motion pictures and television, even a time before reliable radio. How did people across America see these magnificent creatures, daredevil feats and performers from around the globe? It was only through the advent of the American circus, including and especially Baraboo’s very own Ringling Bros. Circus. Also from Baraboo were the Ringlings’ first cousins, the Gollmars, who had a magnificent circus of their own and their other first cousins, the Moellers, who created the whimsical, majestic circus wagons that were part of the Ringling circus and circuses all across America. The Ringling brothers and their extended family really encapsulated the American dream, and through them, changed American history and American culture forever.”

LAKES AND WATERWAYS PLACES TO DROP A LINE

Photograph by Howard Ogden

Devil’s Lake has both warm- and cold-water fisheries. Each year, the DNR stocks the lake with brown trout. Browns are taken mainly on small minnows or spinners of the steeply dropping east and west shores. You will also find walleyes, which are stocked, and northern pikes. Easy access fishing is available along the south shore of the lake, where it is possible to fish just off

the sidewalk. Please note that power boats are not allowed on Devil’s Lake. Fish at Devil’s Lake include trout, common carp, northern pike, white sucker, bullhead, catfish, white bass, rock bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, green sunfish, pumpkinseed, bluegill, crappie, walleye, yellow perch, iowa darter and johnny darter (The trout and carp are not native). devilslakewisconsin.com • 608-356-8301 Mirror Lake is a 139-acre lake with a maximum depth of 19 feet. The lake has three public boat landings. To use the landing within the park you will need a Wisconsin State Park sticker. Mirror Lake is entirely no wake, so boaters should be aware of the regulations specific to this lake. This is not a lake for jet skis, but is a premier lake for kayaks and canoes. Fish include panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike and walleye. The lake’s water clarity is low. mirrorlakewisconsin.com • 608-254-2333 Lake Wisconsin is a 7197-acre lake with a maximum depth of 24 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from public boat landings. Some public landings include Summer Oaks County Park, Moon Valley and Palisade Street in the Village of Merrimac. Please be advised that if this is your first time on Lake Wisconsin you should use caution. Shallow spots with snags, the Merrimac car ferry cables and the low sections of the railway bridge are all potential hazards. Fish include panfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, trout, walleye and catfish. The lake’s water clarity is low. explore BARABOO 2016 ! 45

Seeley Lake is a 52-acre lake with a maximum depth of 10 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Fish include panfish, largemouth bass and northern pike. dnr.wi.gov/lakes • 608-635-8122 Lake Delton is a 249-acre lake with a maximum depth of 16 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from public boat landings. Lake Delton is very

popular for powerboats, jet skis and fishing. The lake also shares the water with Dells Ducks and can be hazardous during busy summer days— use caution. Fish include panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye and catfish. dnr.wi.gov/lakes • 608-635-8122 Gallus Slough is a 20-acre body of water located just north of and across Highways 78 and 113 from Lake Wisconsin. The slough is connected to the lake by a narrow waterway that runs under Highway 78 at Moon Valley. During the open-water season, access to Gallus Slough by boat is from this waterway and the boat landing at Moon Valley. During ice fishing season, the best access is from Highway 113, which runs north to Devil’s Lake State Park. Park your vehicle along Highway 113 and pull your sled and equipment through the farm field ¼ mile to the water. There’s always a good path to the water even if there’s snow on the ground. Anglers walking and pulling sleds and ATV traffic keep the walking easy. The nice thing about Gallus Slough is that it is a good early ice fishing spot and continues to produce fish throughout the ice season. The slough is no deeper than five feet at its deepest spot and is quite weedy, with milfoil being the dominant weed. Bluegills are the most common species of fish that you’ll catch, with crappies a close second. Most bluegills run 7–9 inches and the crappies are in the 10–12 inch range. The weeds provide cover and help the slough’s food chain flourish. dnr.wi.gov/lakes • 608-635-8122

The Baraboo River flows about 100 miles from its headwaters near Hillsboro to its confluence with the Wisconsin River, south of Portage. Access can be obtained at numerous locations, including Rock Springs, North Freedom at Fireman’s Park, Giese Park on Hatchery Road, several parks within the City of Baraboo and at the Glenville Landing. Reports of crappies, bluegills and channel catfish are common. Northern and walleye pike are being caught throughout the river. Smallmouthbass fishing along the rapids through the City of Baraboo is a regular occurrence. dnr.wi.gov • 608-635-8122 The Wisconsin River is the longest river in Wisconsin, at over 430 miles, and is known for outstanding walleye fishing. The Wisconsin River begins near Lac Vieux Desert and flows southwest into the Mississippi River near Prairie du Chien. The spring walleye run on the Wisconsin River is legendary, and you can catch over 50 in a day, with great catches coming below dams. When the water warms after the spring runs, you can catch a large number of smallmouth bass. The rocky banks of the Wisconsin River provide ideal habitat for smallmouth bass.

Photograph by Carolyn Hardy

You can also catch big muskies after they spawn in May below the dam, and the fishing can continue to be good through fall. The backwaters of the Wisconsin River are popular spots to catch northern pike, crappie and bluegills. dnr.wi.gov • 608-635-8122 Visit dnr.wi.gov for more information about area lakes and waterways.
