Safety and Security IN CASE OF EMERGENCY… Learn your escape routes by surveying your hotel before a fire. Count the doors between your room and the fire escape (the exit signs may disappear in heavy smoke). If you hear hotel alarms, your smoke detector or people yelling – believe them! Many people have died in fires because they didn’t take alarms seriously. If there is smoke in your room, the air near the floor will be the most clear
Like all buildings, hotels can have fires. Plan what to do when you check in. You won’t have time to plan during a fire.
DROP TO THE FLOOR. Take your room key in case outside exits are blocked and you need to return to your room.
• When you hear an alarm, act, don’t investigate.
• First, find the two exits nearest your room. • Be sure they are unlocked and unblocked. • Then count doors between your room and exits so you’ll have a reference point if it’s smoky. • If fire is in your room, get out and close the door. Once out, report the fire.
DON’T STOP FOR YOUR BELONGINGS! Touch the door knob to see if it is warm. If it is, do not open your door. If it’s not, locate stairs to exit your floor. If you encounter smoke, do not go through it. Should you be trapped in your room, notify the Front Desk and fill the bathtub with water. Force wet sheets and towels around cracks in the door to keep smoke out. Hang a sheet out the window, so people will know you are in your room. Do not break your window unless you have no other choice as you may need to close it to keep smoke out. If you must exit through smoke, drape a wet towel over your head for breathing purposes and stay low.
• If fire is not in your room, leave if you can. First, feel your door. If it’s cool, open it slowly and go to the nearest exit. Crawl in smoke. Fresh air will be at the floor. Take your key so you can go back if you can’t use your exits. • Never use elevators during a fire. They could stop at the fire floor. • If your room door is hot, don’t open it. Your room may be the safest place to be. Seal all cracks with wet towels. Shut off fans and air conditioners. Signal at your window. Call the fire department and wait to be rescued.
DON’T PANIC - you will have a better chance of escape!
These recommendations are to be construed only as suggestions. Each person should use their own judgment. Your safety and the security of your personal property are of the utmost concern to us. We urge you to take advantage of the following suggestions.
• Don’t answer the door in your hotel room without verifying who it is. If a person claims to be an employee, call the Front Desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose. • When returning to your hotel late in the evening, use the main entrance of the hotel. Be observant and look around before entering parking lots. • Close the door securely whenever you are in your room and use all of the locking devices provided. • Don’t needlessly display guest room keys in public or carelessly leave them on restaurant tables, at the swimming pool or other places where they can be easily stolen. • Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry. • Don’t invite strangers to your room. • Place all valuables in the hotel’s safe-deposit box. • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. • Check to see that any sliding glass doors or windows and any connecting room doors are locked. • If you see any suspicious activity, please report your observations to the management. • Please always double check to make sure your room door has closed and locked properly.
DO NOT LEAVE MONEY OR VALUABLES IN YOUR ROOM. We provide safe-deposit boxes for your use in our front office at no charge. Under state law, the hotel is not responsible for loss unless articles have been secured properly in these boxes. For additional security, utilize the deadbolt lock provided on your door upon entering. This will prevent the door from being opened by a regular room key. As an additional precaution, please secure the safety chain lock. Do not admit persons to your room without first making identification. A “peep hole” is provided in your door for your convenience. If there is any doubt about the person’s identity, please contact the Front Desk. Safeguard your key. Be sure to leave it with the cashier upon departure. Do not leave it in your room or in the door. Do not give your key to others.
