Dartford Historical Society For over 150 years, tourists and visitors have been answering the call to come experience Green Lake. Early travelers from as far south as New Orleans and as far east as Philadelphia arrived by train and made the last 10-mile leg of their journey by horse and coach along winding, dusty roads. Years later, whole families drove hundreds or thousands of miles across the country to experience a slice of the good life in one of America’s oldest resort communities.
The attraction seemed to be the cool breezes captured by the multistory wraparound porches of our largeframe hotels, providing travelers with an escape from the summer heat. Or perhaps it was the lake itself, glimmering with invitation on a sunny day. For decades, people have cruised through our cool waters on steamers for sightseeing and sailed along the shore for sport and for fun. Fishing and hunting from the area’s ample stock of

fish and game gave visitors yet another way to pass their days in leisure. The hotels have changed, the trains no longer stop, and horses and carriages are reserved for parades. But visitors still arrive to soak up the atmosphere of one of the Midwest’s best-kept secrets. Since 1956, the Dartford Historical Society has been preserving memories of the area’s past in the form of exhibits, photographs and stories to share with today’s generation of travelers. There is a long historical tradition of visiting our town. Look us up when you’re here—we’ll show you a side of Green Lake that at first seems distant, but is actually quite familiar. Larry Behlen is President of the Dartford Historical Society.

Green Lake Area Camping By Greg Pierce Camping is the best way to stay in Green Lake for outdoor enthusiasts or families seeking a good old-fashioned American vacation. Green Lake’s Natural Wealth By Thomas L. Eddy A quaint lake community, Green Lake offers numerous cultural venues. Caestecker Public Library. Thrasher Opera House. Town Square. These, along with varied outdoor recreational opportunities, make for a high-quality Wisconsin lifestyle. But despite its cultural assets, it is Green Lake’s natural wealth that underpins the community’s socioeconomic wellbeing. The evidence is in its natural capital and associated ecosystem services. Natural capital includes lakes and streams, forests and wetlands, croplands and fertile soils. The vital ecosystem services conveyed by this natural wealth are free amenities to
Green Lake residents and visitors alike. From flood control and water purification to carbon sequestration and climate regulation, they supply what humans require to meet their daily and long-term needs. Wisconsin’s biodiversity. Provisioning services supply our energy needs, food and medicine, while pest and disease control and recycling of wastes are indispensable regulating services. Recreational, aesthetic and spiritual connections, along with scientific and educational opportunities, are cultural services that enrich the human experience. If a community’s well-being and sustainability is measured by its cultural assets and natural wealth, then Green Lake is hale and hearty and rich beyond measure. Thomas L. county park that sports a disc golf course along with mowed trails that meander through oak openings and woodlands. And finally, east of Green Lake, Ripon College’s Ceresco Prairie Conservancy offers groomed trails with varied terrain and ties in with South Woods, a rich mesic maple-basswood forest. There are more to choose from, but it’s time to mosey.
Other hiking opportunities for visitors and residents alike are found between Green Lake and Princeton off Swamp Road on the Izaak Walton League’s Snake Creek Wetlands Trail, complete with a small overlook platform. Immediately north of Green Lake off State Highway 49 is Zobel Park, a BASKETBALL COURT
Many of my favorite area trails are compiled in a recent publication by the Green Lake Conservancy Land Trust entitled Hiking Trails of the Green Lake Conservancy Lands (2014). The paperback is available through the Green Lake Chamber of Commerce and Town Square. Among popular conservancy trails are those found at
Sunnyside Conservancy, Assembly Creek and Springs (Hammer’s Trail), Winnebago Trail Conservancy and Norwegian Bay Wetlands, where a spacious boardwalk winds through the wetlands to the west shore of Green Lake.

Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing
EARTH
By Roberta Martin For people who are craving outdoors time during winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at the Green Lake Conference Center is a great option! Last winter, albeit with some hesitation, I decided to try my hand at crosscountry skiing and I could not be more pleased that I did. It’s not as difficult or intimidating as it seems. I’ll walk you through it. First, stop by the Ski Shop at the Conference Center entrance and pick your fun—skis or snowshoes. Then, once you’re properly outfitted, head out on the well-maintained trails throughout the Conference Center and golf course. The breathtaking snow-covered scenery—peaceful and serene—is a sight you won’t want to miss. After a few hours spent enjoying the outdoors with friends, who were even more adventurous than I, we headed back to the ski shop and finished out our day with hot chocolate and laughter. This year, I’m trying snowshoeing. Though I may have to go back and ski, as well. Roberta Martin is the Administrative Assistant at the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Restaurant at Lawsonia
A typical Friday afternoon at the Green Lake Farmer’s Market finds a blend of new and familiar faces shopping for in-season produce, grass-fed meats, artisan breads, raw honey, garlic, canned goods and fresh-cut flowers. As a vendor, I set out to create an inviting space in which people may experience the colors, textures and smells of real food that traveled only a handful of miles from the fields to our market stand. This food, grown with love and care, will nourish their bodies and minds. I love swapping stories about meals prepared using the latest seasonal produce, and chatting with customers who relish the freshness and flavor of food that was harvested only a few hours ago. Big Green Lake is a known haven for high-quality year-round fishing. Our beautiful lake—cool, clear and deep— is home to an outstanding diversity of species, and with a little patience everyone from a seasoned pro to a complete beginner stands a good chance of reeling in a prize. Summer favorites include panfish, bluegill, perch, crappies and white bass. Game fish are also abundant—large- and smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye and the fabled muskellunge all are known to enjoy our waters. Winter ice fishers reel in plenty of lake trout, pike, walleyes, ciscoes and panfish.

“Tip of the Helmet,” as we iceboaters say, to the GLACC for inviting me to promote something I’m passionate about! The Green Lake Ice Yacht Club, founded in 1908, has been a favorite winter pastime. As a summer resident, I didn’t learn about iceboating until winter ’76-77, when my future husband and father-in-law, Mike and Dave Jankowski, had me try out their DN and Nite. Though not a prerequisite, my downhill skiing and sailing skills made it easy—I loved it instantly! Four decades later, I’ve been an active cruiser, racer and regional commodore. One just needs a love of winter! Julie Jankowski is an avid member of the Green Lake Ice Yacht Club.

The temperature is dropping outside and I’m sitting atop the very spot I boated across this summer, but inside the shanty it’s cozy and exciting! The heater is going and the glow of the lake beneath my feet lets me know that I’m living “the good life” no matter the season. There’s nothing like pulling your first (or third or hundredth) fish out of the ice and holding it up for the
camera. Knowing the lake is still alive below my boots makes me love Green Lake even more. Even if the fish aren’t hopping, the company of friends (old and new), the snacks, beverages and inevitable jokes and games will keep
me entertained all day…and it just gives me more time to make up my own “fish story.” Kara Kinas works for Kopplin and Kinas in Green Lake.

It’s a Wonderful Ice Many people wonder why I would choose to live year-round in Green Lake, Wisconsin, a.k.a. The Frozen Tundra. And a few years ago, I may have wondered that myself. But I’ve come to appreciate what winter in Green Lake offers: ice. Lots and lots of ice. It’s a different world—one of beauty and enchantment. Over the course of the winter, parts of the lake can accumulate as many as 36 inches of ice. The most convenient way to enjoy it is on the ice rink in Deacon Mills Park. Created a few years ago by the Downtown Green Lake Renewal Project, the rink offers two acres of perfect gliding surface. A warming hut keeps plenty of skates on hand for those who
don’t already have a pair. Volunteer coordinator Ryan Meiborg and his crew spend hours hanging hundreds of lights above the rink and keeping the surface smooth. If you’re thinking that skating isn’t your thing, I encourage you to try it out nevertheless. You’ll find hockey players of all ages and abilities, retired figure skaters practicing their tricks, parents and children both trying to find their balance and spectators enjoying hot chocolate and watching the show. You’ll bump into old friends and make
new ones. You’ll get a chance to clear your thoughts and feel the serenity of winter in Green Lake. On the rink, the stresses of life disappear, even if just for a while. So come try it out! I hope to see you there.

About three years ago, I came across an intriguing little-known fact: U.S. Mail was delivered around Green Lake by boat from 1929 until 1968. I tracked down Green Lake’s preeminent first cousins and former mail boys Joe and Doug Norton for details—the Norton family and their fleet of Chris-Crafts ran the marine mail operation for most of its four-decade run. At the height of the route, they delivered to approximately 350 mailboxes, generally accomplishing it in about 2 hours, and making it quite a speedy delivery. Of course, there were no wake rules back then! Talking with Joe and Doug was inspiring, and we set to work resurrecting the marine mail program. For the past three summers, lakefront residents have had the opportunity to experience a unique piece of Green Lake nostalgia and receive marine mail once again.

Good for fitness enthusiasts or leisurely paddlers alike, paddleboarding is quickly becoming an area favorite. The Green Lake Conference Center has over two miles of frontage to explore, the wharf downtown offers great views of the city and easy access to boating started at a young age. In 1962, I built my first DN 60 ice boat—that and many subsequent winters were spent whizzing through the ice with friends and tweaking the design of the boat for an even faster ride. Four years later, in 1966, I restored my first mahogany Chris Craft. I had never seen something so beautiful. I spent many youthful years delivering marine mail to lakefront businesses and homes on Chris Crafts—usually with our dog—and

am very pleased to have picked that particular habit back up later in life. Of course, Green Lake’s history with wooden boats predates even my own. Early wooden steam launches delivered guests and goods alike to the luxurious hotels that lined the shores. These boats would have been built right here in town, as there was no way to truck them here from far away. Green Lake’s first fishing guides used wooden rowboats to take their customers to all the best cribs. Today, the descendants of those boats— sleek pleasure crafts and runabouts far removed from their utilitarian past—can still be spotted cruising through our pristine waters. Which is not to say that we’ve forgotten our past. The Downtown Green Lake Renewal Project brought back the delivery of marine mail, and every August the wharf downtown hosts its annual Wooden Boat Show. And I’m still around, doing what I’ve always done. I’ve been lucky to call this place home, and I look forward to many more years on Big Green. Joe Norton is a master boat builder and Founder of Norton Boat Works.

Sail Away By Gretchen Z. Feeney When I think of summer in Green Lake, I think sailing. For many, summer is a time to get away, but I like nothing better than to spend my summer here in Green Lake and on the water. For generations, sailing on Green Lake has been a family favorite. Whether for relaxation or for competition, sailing has brought me closer to my family, my community and the lake that is my home. I am passionate about the two local organizations that make sailing so accessible to everyone: The Green Lake Yacht Club (GLYC) and the Green Lake Sailing School. The GLYC is probably the world’s most affordable yacht club, and offers a chance for me to get together with new and old friends both on and off the water. I take advantage of racing opportunities on many weeknights in my Laser and on Sundays in my Snipe. On Wednesdays, I sail with our women’s group, just as my grandmother and mother did years ago. The only thing better than the sailing is the gathering and general nonsense that follows. Getting kids involved in sailing is another of my passions. Nothing beats watching kids learning to sail Saturday mornings at Sunset Park. My Family Membership at the Green Lake Sailing School, where I was once an instructor, offers me unlimited access so my kids and I can sail and meet the countless folks, natives and visitors, who enjoy the flexible lessons. If you need to find me, I’m probably afloat watching the pelicans circle, working on a boat or enlisting more kids to sail with me. No matter what, I would love for you to discover the pleasure of sailing and the beauty of Green Lake. Follow the Green Lake Yacht Club and the Green Lake Sailing School on Facebook for daily updates all year long. Gretchen Feeney is Treasurer of the Green Lake Yacht Club.

WIND
By Tom Schultz
“Tea-kettle, tea-kettle, tea-kettle!” This loud and lovely musical whistle rang through the forest as I was hiking along Green Lake on the Winnebago Trail one morning, and I immediately perked up my ears. It was the distinctive song of the Carolina Wren, and I knew it to be quite unusual for this part of the state. The unexpected encounter is one of the reasons folks love to spend time experiencing nature, and birdwatching provides a great reason to be outdoors. The Carolina Wren may be somewhat unexpected here, but the woods, meadows and marshes of the Green Lake area offer tremendous opportunities for birdwatching at any time of year. The peak months for bird
activity tend to be May and June, when many species are arriving for local nesting or pausing as they migrate northward. At this time they are most noticeable on the landscape due to their bright breeding plumages, active singing and courtship displays. There are several nearby Conservancy lands that provide trails and public access, such as Sunnyside Conservancy, Winnebago Trail, Hammer’s Trail and the Norwegian Bay boardwalk. Other excellent birding opportunities are available at White River Marsh and Grand River Marsh— both of which are state wildlife areas. On the latter two properties, it may be possible to find about 100 different

types of birds during those peak months, including wetland birds such as American Bittern, Sora and Virginia Rails, Northern Harriers and Marsh and Sedge Wrens. In the late fall, early winter, and early spring, waterbirds such as ducks, loons and grebes often gather on the waters of Green Lake, and Bald Eagles are frequently spotted along the lakeshores. For the past few years we have been blessed to have small groups of endangered Whooping Cranes brought to the White River Marsh for training to follow ultralight aircraft—the only place in the world where this happens. I have been fortunate to be a volunteer with Operation Migration—the organization that does this work—and part of my job is leading interested folks on tours to view the morning activities from a nearby blind. Folks are encouraged to take advantage of this great opportunity to view the training of these spectacular birds, which takes place from early July until late September. Hot air ballooning has a special magical allure. Imagine rising slowly toward the sky, surrounded by gondola, suspended beneath a huge balloon. Counterclockwise and Clockwise: Biking Green Lake
WIND
By Todd Sharp I’ve pedaled through the Colorado Rockies, the New York Finger Lakes, the Natchez Trace, the peanut country of Virginia and many roads between. The familiar route around Green Lake is one of the finest I’ve ever taken. Out here, the tranquil farm roads provide miles of paved biking, pastoral scenery, wildlife and a few heart-pounding categorized hills. The distance is just right for me, the hills are challenging and there are always new routes and paths to be taken. One Saturday last September, I rode my bike to Town Square for their community ride and the 22-mile “Loop the Lake.” I’ve been riding around Green Lake for the past 10 years, but when I had the chance to go with some native Green Lakers I discovered new roads—shortcuts and safe passages I didn’t know existed. For instance, take the shortcut through Green Lake Conference Center. This way you can avoid busy Highway 23 entirely! Going with a group, hearing new stories and discovering new friends made the trip nearly effortless.
my feet. That’s why our cleated cycling shoes have zip straps, you know. Easy lakefront access. Berry season, wild asparagus and the occasional pea field also provide sustenance and ample reason to stop. The day after the community ride, I looped the lake again, this time by myself and in the other direction— clockwise. It was a hot day, and just five miles down the road I started thinking hard about cold drinks. I was happy Karla at the Center House was open early. She was kind enough to refill my water bottle with ice, but did manage to question my mental capacity for decisionmaking, vis-à-vis the heat.
My last tips: start by riding counterclockwise around Green Lake. Skunk Hollow Road is much nicer to go down than it is to go up. If you’re leaving from downtown, roll to your right. It’s safer anyway, as you don’t cross traffic. Always be careful around the roads. And remember to enjoy time off the bike as much as on the bike. If we don’t cross paths on the road, maybe we will in the middle of a berry field somewhere. Todd Sharp is an avid cyclist, and his weekly “Prune” column in the Green Laker offers readers a cheerfully skewed perspective on the aging process.
Riding with others and chatting is fun, particularly when you can go slowly enough to pedal, breathe and talk at the same time. Nothing is more frustrating than struggling to get enough air while your riding partners jabber away like they’re sitting on the porch swing on a beautiful weekend morning and the only thing sweating is their glass of iced tea. Knowing when and where to stop and take a break is also important. I like to stop at Sassafras for a coffee, Bay View Landing for a scoop of ice cream, any number of bars for cold water, secluded shade trees to cool down away from the road and the occasional shoreline to dip visitgreenlake.com | 25

I am very fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of Wisconsin. Growing up in Ripon, just a few miles east, I was able to enjoy the Green Lake area most of my childhood. Mostly, the lake was where I would spend my time, whether it was after work, a weekend in the summer, or ice fishing with my family during the winter months. The waters of Green Lake were where I typically could be found during my free time. Then I picked up the game of golf. I discovered Green Lake has in its immediate surroundings four stunning courses that provide 9 9 holes of wonderful golf. The city of Green Lake is home to the oldest golf course in the State of Wisconsin. Just two miles west is one of the top public courses in the country. A 10-minute drive to the
Golfing
north you will find yet another gem of a golf course. Finally, a quick 20-minute drive west offers a unique experience as well. All of these courses have changed over the years. Holes have been added, foliage has been removed and yardages have been modified. The changes have made these courses that much better. Tuscumbia Golf Course is the oldest course in the state, located in the oldest resort town west of Niagara Falls. That alone should make you want to come play this course! Its traditional style offers you the opportunity to play among mature tree lines and straight fairways. Accuracy off the tee is essential. But not to worry if your shot has a bit of a slice. The famed “Tuscy Punch” shot is part of every golfer’s game who is up to the challenge of playing Tuscumbia. Even the pros have to punch it out once in a while. The Golf Courses of Lawsonia has been ranked in the top 75 public courses in the country. They offer two very distinct
By Todd Weir courses: The Links and The Woodlands. Both courses play exactly as they are named. With recent improvements on the Links, you feel as though you are golfing in Scotland. The views from both courses are spectacular, and rarely do you play a round of golf without spotting deer, turkey or even bald eagles. Mascoutin Golf Club is set on gently rolling hills along the Fox River. They offer 27 holes of championship golf, and it has everything you could want in a golf course. From lengthy par fours to reachable par fives and multiple water holes, this course has it all. With such a beautiful setting, men, women and junior golfers alike can enjoy the appeal of Mascoutin. White Lake Country Club in Montello is carved out of ancient glacier lands, nestled among hills, woods and ponds. It offers three sets of tees on each hole to accommodate golfers of all abilities. You can play 18 holes of golf and then head to the sandy beaches of White Lake to complete your day. Considering myself lucky to be living in Green Lake is an understatement. Not only does the lake provide opportunity, but having access to four incredible golf courses is equally fortunate. Make it a point to come and play in Green Lake and enjoy “The Good Life.” Todd Weir is President of the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Owner of Pinnacle Plumbing, LLC.

Giant undulating greens test your putting, sand traps galore wait to swallow an errant shot and water hazards come into play on the final four holes. With bent-grass fairways and superb conditioning, the layout appeals to golfers of all abilities. In 1999, Mascoutin opened a new mystifying nine designed by Rick Jacobson. Disc Golf
WIND By Nathan Mirr
Disc Golf is more than my hobby—it’s my obsession. Living in Green Lake, it was also a problem. I couldn’t satisfy that need for “chains” without a fairly significant drive. So, the obvious answer was this: build a local course. Actually, not just any course, but a phenomenal tournament/event caliber 18-hole course, one that also happens to be family
friendly. We found the ideal locale in rural, beautifully maintained Zobel Park, just north of Green Lake on Highway 49. And pardon the borrowed phrase, but we built it and they have come! The Disc Course, designed by Pat Blake and built through grass-roots funding by local volunteers, incorporates the
natural flow of the park’s hills, flats and varied vegetation, from the first hole, to the last long, downhill, air-it-out bomb. This incredible free course has been reviewed as one of the best in Wisconsin. It’s definitely worth a stop! Nathan Mirr co-founded the Zobel Park Disc Golf Course.
Snowmobiling
Just because winter in Green Lake is cold and snowy doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to do. The Green Lake area offers a plethora of winter activities. One of the most popular, and certainly the highest octane, is snowmobiling. Snowmobiling is a great family activity that brings people together in the enjoyment of the outdoors. Wisconsin is nationally recognized as one of the best states for snowmobiling, and we believe Green Lake County has a lot to do with that statistic! With over 150 miles of scenic trails spanning woods, meadows, marshes and fields, it’s easy to see why so many people mark us as the hub of their winter riding. Trail conditions vary, but when conditions are good, the trails are great! Call 920.294.3220 for trail information or to request a map.

The Arts By Margaret York Treasures dot the countryside and towns all throughout the Green Lake area—if you know where to look. Art is my treasure, and I’m delighted that it is so easy to find. Nationally noted artists such as wildlife painter Tom Schultz (Green Lake), glass blower Wes Hunting (Princeton) and Mick Myland (Ripon) all call this area home, and happily share their creations with others. Extraordinary woodworkers design and create breathtaking pieces from a multitude of local woods. Galleries and shops are filled with original, oneof-a-kind pieces. A large-scale mural by Rafael Salas graces a building in Ripon. Delightful sculptures by Lester Schwartz, Eugene Kain, Ralph Wiekstrom and others enliven Green Lake’s Town Square and other public areas. Even an authentic totem pole

has made its way here from the great northwest. Art always seems to gather art, so it should come as no surprise that the area is home to numerous fine art fairs and craft shows throughout the year. There are always opportunities to take art classes, as well. I often glance out my window to see people painting outdoors or creating beautiful chalk compositions on the sidewalk.
lectures and workshops, and much, much more. It’s a feast for the eyes, and for the mind. So come visit Green Lake, and indulge in the arts as we do.
Performing arts have a home here, too— music festivals, theater performances,

Concerts in the Park
FIRE
By Kate Miller Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote, “Music is the universal language of mankind.” As a violinist myself, I have long believed that music is an incredible force that has the power to unite humanity, no matter how different we might be as individuals. Last summer, I had the privilege of overseeing the Concerts in the Park series in beautiful downtown Green Lake. Helping to plan and facilitate this series was one of the highlights of my time in Green Lake. Though the town is small, it is very diverse, and I believe that the strength of this concert series lies in its variety. Over the summer, we were able to showcase a wide range of musical styles, from classic rock to the exhilarating brass and drums of the University of Wisconsin marching band. There truly was something for everyone,
and that kind of variety brought many people together in the enjoyment of live music. One of my favorite moments of the series was looking out into the rapt audience during a performance by a salsa band. Many young children were already up near the stage, laughing and twirling. I was surprised, however, when a few of the community’s teenagers got up from the audience and politely
asked some of the elderly residents to dance. They led them out onto the grassy “dance floor” and gently guided them, teaching them steps as they went. The entire scene made me smile. Music really does unite us all, no matter how different we might be. Kate Miller coordinated the 2014 Concerts in the Park Series for the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Green Lake Festival of Music By Laura Deming Every spring, a dear friend calls to invite us to one of the many summer concerts of the Green Lake Festival of Music. She always treats us to dinner in Green Lake beforehand, introducing us to other concertgoers who are friends and supporters of this gem of a music festival. She makes careful study of the offerings—this year will it be Concert Pianist Shen Lu, the young winner of the Hilton Head International Piano Competition, or the Jupiter String Quartet? Or any of a wide variety of other world-class musical acts? I love the long drive around Green Lake, and always make time for a stroll
through town before meeting our friend for dinner. Finally, we step through the doors of the historic Thrasher Opera House downtown for yet another unforgettable evening. The hush of the crowd, and the magic that follows—that communal feeling that, for the next two hours, all is right with the world—is something that I look forward to every year. For schedule and ticket information, please visit our website greenlakefestival .org, “Like” us on Facebook, or call the
office at 920.748.9398. We look forward to seeing you! Laura Deming is the Interim Director of the Green Lake Festival of Music.

Thrasher Opera House
By Roby Irvin
Built in 1910, the Thrasher Opera House served as a community center and venue for the performing arts for three decades, until its conversion into a warehouse during World War II. After the war, the building fell silent and slowly descended into disrepair. In 1994, local real estate broker Ron Hagstrom stepped in and immediately set to work turning back the building’s internal clock. By 1997, his restoration was complete, and in 1998 Thrasher started to host its own events once again. Today, Thrasher Opera House continues to delight residents and visitors alike. Heidel House Brew Fest is special because, in one place, over 30 Wisconsin microbreweries come together and put their most beloved flavors forward for guests to taste and choose the best. Whether you’re partial to IPAs, stouts, ambers or something else, you have the opportunity to mingle with the brewery reps and try multiple varieties of your favorite kinds of beer.
Memorial Day
Brew Fest With over 100 flavors available, it’s a feat. I especially enjoy the element of competition with the People’s Choice award. It’s fun to reward the brewery by featuring the most popular beer of the evening on tap for the following year. Scott Krause is the General Manager at Heidel House Resort & Spa.

Shortly after I returned from Vietnam, I marched with the Color Guard leading the Memorial Day parade in Green Lake for the first time. As we turned the corner onto Mill Street, I was moved to
see the crowd lining the street. When we passed by, the crowd stood—not only to honor the flag, but to cheer for all of the Veterans. I was filled with emotion. I still am now, and at every parade, nearly 40 years later. Our Veterans are overwhelmed by the support and pride shown by the Green Lake community.

Coach Scott Haywood has coached the camp since it began, and is licensed with the United Sates Soccer Foundation. Approximately 50 children participate every year. It’s a great way for the children to learn new skills and make new friends! Dusty Walker is Co-founder of the Tom Jones Memorial Soccer Camp.
Fourth of July Celebration Every year we celebrate our independence with old and new events and activities throughout Downtown Green Lake. The celebration begins bright and early with a fantastic pancake breakfast served by the American Legion’s Auxiliary branch. After breakfast, the great festivities continue over at the Legion’s specialty golf event where you have the chance to “Sink the Bismarck”! During the afternoon, there is a funfilled rubber duck race. Hundreds of lucky ducks start at the edge of the Dartford Dam, and bob and weave their way downstream. Other fun activities include Haven’s Petting Zoo, miniature sailboat races, Bozo bucket tosses, face painting and professional balloon animals.
EVENTS
On top of all this we have not one, but two parades. Afternoon sees our boat parade down at the Wharf, where over a dozen boats come out on the water, decorated to the nines. After seeing the boats, you can head downtown to see the traditional Green Lake Fourth of July parade right here on Mill Street. A wide variety of entertainment acts will perform right up to the moment of the first crack of the community fireworks display over beautiful Dartford Bay at dusk. Everyone gathers, brings blankets and sits down by the lake to patiently wait for the fireworks. This is a great time to catch up with friends, and enjoy each other’s company on the shores of the lake. Culminating with the fireworks show, the Fourth of July in Green Lake is a great time to be had by all!

Oktoberfest at Heidel House holds a special place in my heart. My initial experience, in 2011, marked my first week working at the resort. I didn’t know many people and was still getting acquainted with the new area so I circled the outskirts trying to take pictures without being in the way. But, by the end of the night, I had polka-danced with a stranger, cheered
on a gang of running sausages and witnessed a beer-drinking relay from 2-liter boots. Most importantly, I met wonderful people—both visitors and area residents—who I look forward to seeing again every year. Carrie Ivacko is the Marketing Manager at Heidel House Resort & Spa.

Green Lake Conference Center It’s an amazing history: what began as a dairy farm in the 1800s became a luxurious country club in the 1920s. In 1944, the estate became a Christian conference center. Today Green Lake Conference Center (GLCC) is host to over 400 groups a year with a mission to nurture and equip leaders for a closer walk with God. My family first brought me to GLCC when I was three. As a child I felt a sense of wonderment, particularly in the presence of Judson Tower! Decades later it’s still a thrill for me to spot wildlife, experience the beauty of the seasons and share this spiritual place with the world.

GLCC is a treasure for the Green Lake community. Hammer’s Trail and Winnebago Trail are great for hiking. They are maintained by the Green Lake Conservancy, and Hammer’s Trail is ideal for snowshoeing. Bikers connect with us via the City of Green Lake Trail built by Green Lake Greenways. Participants in Ripon Medical Center’s Triathlon and Green Lake’s 13dot1 Half Marathon like traversing our tree-lined and lakeside roads. Our 54-acre native prairie is a wonderful place to wander, spot butterflies and enjoy nature.

GLCC is a unique place that renews and energizes people from the moment they drive through our gates.

Shopping Queen—that’s what my girlfriends call me. I bear the title with pride as I enjoy weaving in and out of charming shops in Green Lake, visiting with shop owners, seeing cool items on shelves, and finding a unique something for my home or as a gift. Even though my girlfriends tease, when they visit my home in Green Lake, they, too, love doing the “shop crawl,” and are tickled with a one-of-a-kind find. From a special piece of jewelry to hand-carved wooden feathers to lovely antiques to a Green Lake memento, the shops offer a variety of cool treasures, and the hunt for that special thing is so much fun! I adore Green Lake with its variety of shops, a darling coffee shop, an outstanding library, Town Square, and the old-fashioned ambience created by the clock on the square, trees, flowers, banners, benches and more. Not only do I enjoy shopping this quaint downtown, supporting local business owners who provide my shopping pleasure and services is important to me. My friends know

I remember the grand old courthouse building from my childhood—as a little girl, I sat in the laundromat (now the Special Properties Real Estate office) with my mother and looked out the window in awe of the huge lawn and giant pillars. I didn’t know what went on over there, but I knew that it was important. Because it was happening in an important building. That building was the glue that held the county together. It grounded us and gave us a sense of place. Now, people from all walks of life come to Town Square for yoga, cooking or

For the last three years, our beautiful, historic courthouse has taken on a new life as a fabulous community center called Town Square, entirely created and supported by the people of the Green Lake County Area. I am so grateful to have been part of that process.

painting classes. They come for our 24-hour fitness center or for the artist co-op selling the work of 20 area artists. They come for our galleries, our meeting spaces, our day spa and our certified commercial kitchen. So, when I think about it, it seems to me that our old courthouse is even more important in its second life than it was as a government building. It is still the glue. But it is the glue that holds our people together. It is the place that we come to work, play, learn and solve problems together. It is the place where we accomplish as a community what we never could have done alone. For information on our programming and upcoming events, please visit greenlaketownsquare.com.
