Dartford Historical Society by Larry Behlen

For over 150 years, visitors have found their way to the Green Lake experience. Fishing, sailing, golfing, hunting or escaping the heat of the cities makes Green Lake home to a relaxing vacation. Early travelers from as far away as New Orleans and Philadelphia came by train and then made the remaining 10-mile journey by horse and carriage on dusty roads. Now visitors arrive by car from all over the United States to experience one of the Midwest’s oldest

resort communities. The attraction to Green Lake is the same as it was 150 years ago. This year the Dartford Historical Society celebrates 60 years of collecting and preserving the memories of the area’s past. The Society’s collection of artifacts, photographs, letters, postcards and newspapers has grown over the years. These materials are used to tell stories of past visitors and

residents of Green Lake. These stories of the past are shared by the Dartford Historical Society in the form of exhibits and public events. Though trains no longer stop and horses and carriages are reserved for parades, their stories are preserved. Larry Behlen is President of the Dartford Historical Society.

The Carbon Economy of Green Lake County On a beautiful sunny afternoon it is easy to feel carefree and far removed from the problems of the world. This is one of many reasons the fraternal order of Green Lake lovers is a dedicated lot, fast to sing the praises of the area’s clean air, ample water, freedom from social unrest and abundant beauty. In fact, we can feel so isolated from global issues to imagine we have little to do with them and they with us. Perhaps that was true at some point, but the new reality is that we are increasingly interconnected with the world in both obvious and unseen ways. Increased atmospheric carbon and the resulting changes in our climate are subtle, yet profoundly important, common denominators that we share with every living creature on the planet. Although the lake offers us a chance to get away from it all, it also serves as a reminder of our need to focus on preserving it. We need simple, affordable and local solutions to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, and it turns out part of the answer is right under our noses— actually, under our feet. Healthy soil holds an incredible amount of carbon in a stable form, and if that isn’t amazing enough, with proper management it can actually draw carbon out of the atmosphere and store it underground, aka carbon sequestration. Prairies, marshes, forests, savannahs and other ecosystems found within our county have been providing this service to us for millennia free of charge! Preserving these biomes needs to be a top priority, but looking around Green 8 | 2016 green lake vacation and travel planner

Lake County, one can’t help but notice the predominate use of the soil is agriculture. While conservation is important, it does not tend to pay the bills, especially for those making a living from agriculture. Unfortunately, much of the agriculture in Green Lake County, like the rest of the United States, utilizes practices that actually release the carbon that is stored in the soil into the atmosphere. This release occurs through annual tillage. Even when no-till practices are put in place, the use of agrichemicals inhibits the soil’s ability to build up carbon stores, as there is no microbial life with which to convert it to a stable form. However, there are a growing number of farms utilizing management practices that focus on soil health without the use of chemicals. In the process, these farmers have found a way to make a living while sequestering atmospheric carbon in the soil on their farms. Rotationally grazing livestock, cover cropping, introducing tree crops and a combination of these practices are happening right here and now, and

each increases the soil’s ability to sequester carbon. These practices increase the amount of organic matter in the soil, which also increases the soil’s ability to hold fertility and absorb water—a recipe for better crops, healthier livestock and, ultimately, healthier people. The growing number of sustainable farms in Green Lake County offer an irresistible deal for visitors and residents alike. For the simple act of patronage at the farmer’s market, annual festival or in an on-farm store, these farms will draw carbon out of the atmosphere on your behalf and store it in their soils. And for an unlimited time only, customers get delicious, locally produced food as a bonus. Beat that, Amazon! Though it cannot be seen directly, a carbon economy is growing in Green Lake County, and we can all help reverse climate change by participating. The more successful these farms are, the more successful farms there will be. It’s as simple as that. Mat Boerson is Co-owner of Boerson Farm.

Green Lake Conservancy’s Water Trail by Thomas L. Eddy Q: How do visitors to Green Lake offset the effects of “nature deficit disorder”? A: They peruse the picturesque natural areas on trails and boardwalks established in and around the Green Lake area.

The Silver Creek Water Trail can be accessed by canoe or kayak, guiding paddlers up or downstream on Green Lake’s main tributary. Two launch sites are available (see map): Green Lake Sailing School (County Road A) and Spaulding Bridge Landing (Spaulding Hill Road). Paddling out from Green Lake, beneath the causeway bridge, one can view Silver Point Wetlands then move across to Sugar Island, a timbered peninsula where Native Americans made maple sugar. Upstream a short distance is Pools Hill Nature Preserve, a gentle rise of land that offers a commanding view of Silver Creek. The next sojourn is Sunnyside Nature Preserve. One can pause here for a leisurely jaunt on conservancy foot trails that meander through grassy openings and woodlands. And further 10 | 2016 green lake vacation and travel planner

upstream is Spaulding Bridge Landing. Upstream from here, the lands are in private ownership, but you can stay on the water all the way to Ripon if you choose. Pack your gear—a lunch, fishing pole and tackle, binoculars, camera, maybe

a field guide—and take in the Silver Creek Water Trail, a scenic and healthy antidote for “nature deficit disorder.” Thomas L. Eddy is an Adjunct Biology Professor, Botanist and author who advocates for Wisconsin’s natural areas. Photo by Thomas .L. Eddy

Many of these publicly accessible trails were compiled in a recent publication by the Green Lake Conservancy land trust entitled Hiking Trails of the Green Lake Conservancy Lands (2014). The paperback is available through the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Town Square. But did you know there is also a water trail to conservancy lands?

Green Lake’s Ecosystem Services by Thomas L. Eddy A quintessential summer day in Green Lake originates on the Silver Creek Estuary at the east end of the lake. The sunrise clears the treetops on Sugar Island. A dip in the lake. A stringer of fish. Placid breezes push clouds and sailboats and tousle leafy canopies on shore, creating a sound akin to rain. Picnic lunch enjoyed beneath a shady oak copse. Later at the farmer’s market, locally grown produce brimming from baskets. And that faint resonant buzzing—wild bees pollinating the flowers of exotic cultivars, crop plants and wildflowers. Finally, at dusk, the western horizon off Norwegian Bay is afire, followed by hushed murmurs around a flickering campfire. All in a day’s work, these vital ecosystem services are part of the natural capital that underpins the community’s ecological and socioeconomic well-

being. From flood control and water purification to carbon sequestration and climate regulation, they supply what humans require to meet their daily and long-term needs. Green Lake’s supporting services, like nutrient cycling and pollination, help maintain genetic diversity and habitat for Wisconsin’s biodiversity. Provisioning services supply our energy needs, food and medicine, while pest and disease control and recycling of wastes

are indispensable regulating services. Recreational, aesthetic and spiritual connections, along with scientific and educational opportunities, are cultural services that enrich the human experience. Northern Pike

by Tina and Mike Moser Big Green Lake has high-quality fishing in all four seasons. The lake has many species of fish to catch and is fun for all ages. Personally, I like to fish in the fall. The leaves are changing on the shoreline, black mink are swimming around the rocks and there are many species of birds that land on the lake on their journey back south. You can catch very large northern pike, muskellunge and bass! My grandkids love to fish for panfish in the summer, and also get excited when

they catch bluegills, perch, crappies and bass. When we get out on the lake, the contest begins: a dollar for the first fish and another dollar for the biggest fish—you would think it was a hundred dollars. All lines are cast out all sides of the boat. The four-year-old is the bait girl. She loves to get the worm out of the dirt and scoop the minnow out of the bucket. She thinks the leaches are scary! You can count on going home with a basket full of fish and a story about how the “big one” broke your line right when you got it up to the boat. The day ends with a good ol’ Wisconsin fish fry. There is nothing like frying up the catch of the day and retelling the

Ice Fishing by Kara Kinas The allure of Green Lake doesn’t end when the snow flies. With everything quiet and still above the lake, fish swim below, and you can catch some of the action by ice fishing. Outside and below the ice may be cold, but inside a shanty is warm and inviting. There’s nothing

like pulling out a big northern pike from beneath your feet. Catching a glimpse of fish through the ice as you pull them closer to the surface gets your heart racing as you anticipate how big they will be. Seeing the tip spring to life as the other end swims away with the

bait gets you up and out of the shack in seconds. The hole may only be 10 inches, but those are your 10 inches for the day. Your 10 inches of Green Lake. Kara Kinas works for Kopplin and Kinas in Green Lake.

It’s a Wonderful Ice by Downtown Green Lake Renewal Project Many people wonder why one would choose to live year-round in Green Lake, Wisconsin, aka the frozen tundra. And a few years ago, I may have wondered that myself. But I’ve come to appreciate what winter in Green Lake offers: ice. Lots and lots of ice. It’s a different world—one of beauty and enchantment. Over the course of the winter, parts of the lake can accumulate as many as 36 inches of ice. The most convenient way to enjoy it is on the ice rink in Deacon Mills Park.

20 | 2016 green lake vacation and travel planner

Created a few years ago by the Downtown Green Lake Renewal Project, the rink offers two acres of perfect gliding surface. A warming hut keeps plenty of skates on hand for those who don’t already have a pair. Volunteer coordinator Ryan Meiborg and his crew spend hours hanging hundreds of lights above the rink and keeping the surface smooth. If you’re thinking that skating isn’t your thing, I encourage you to try it out

nevertheless. You’ll find hockey players of all ages and abilities, retired figure skaters practicing their tricks, parents and children both trying to find their balance and spectators enjoying hot chocolate and watching the show. You’ll bump into old friends and make new ones. You’ll get a chance to clear your thoughts and feel the serenity of winter in Green Lake. On the rink, the stresses of life disappear, even if just for a while. So come try it out! I hope to see you there.

Pontooning by Thom Lemmenes

Fast forward through a college degree, a wedding and a child, and the Century has moved on to a new home. I now find myself on a pontoon nearly every time I am on the water. It seems that my priorities have changed. Pontoons have come a long way in the last few years. New engine technology and function-focused layouts have made it possible to ski, wakeboard and tube behind a floating patio. This is one of those times when you can have your cake and eat it too. Don’t sell pontoons

A seemingly short 10 years ago, I became the proud owner of a 1972 Century speedboat, a fiberglass classic and a true hot rod on the water. It had 330 horsepower, a roaring thru-hull exhaust and room for five very, very close friends. I didn’t think I could ever possibly have a need for another boat.

short because your grandpa had one 25 years ago that smoked, made a lot of noise and couldn’t get out of its own way. Boating is about the experience, not the image. Green Lake has 25 miles of shoreline to cruise and over 7,300 acres to fish, ski and swim. A pontoon is arguably the single best boat to do it all. Speedboats, fishing boats and personal watercraft are fun, and will always have their place

and purpose on the water, but more people are coming around to pontoons. I’m not old by any means, but my values have matured a bit. Relaxing and taking in the beauty of the lake with family and friends have eclipsed the need to turn heads with my boat. Enjoy Green Lake, and I’ll see you on the water! Sail Away by Gretchen Z. Feeney When I think of summer in Green Lake, I think sailing. For many, summer is a time to get away, but I like nothing better than to spend my summer here in Green Lake and on the water. For generations, sailing on Green Lake has been a family favorite. Whether for relaxation or for competition, sailing has brought me closer to my family, my community and the lake that is my home.

Getting kids involved in sailing is another of my passions. Nothing beats watching kids learning to sail Saturday mornings at Sunset Park. My Family Membership at the Green Lake Sailing School, where I was once an instructor, offers me unlimited access, so my kids and I can sail and meet the countless folks, natives and visitors who enjoy the flexible lessons. If you need to find me, I’m probably afloat watching the pelicans circle, working on a boat or enlisting more kids to sail with me. No matter what, I would love for you to discover the pleasure of sailing and the beauty of Green Lake. Follow the GLYC and the Green Lake Sailing School on Facebook for daily updates all year long. Wooden Boats by Joe Norton Wooden boats have always had a special place in my heart, mainly because they’ve always had a special place in Green Lake. I grew up on this lake, and my lifelong adventure with boating started at a young age. In 1962, I built my first DN 60 ice boat; that and many subsequent winters were spent whizzing through the ice with friends and tweaking the design of the boat for an even faster ride. Four years later, in 1966, I restored my first mahogany Chris Craft. I had never seen something so beautiful. I spent many youthful years delivering marine mail to lakefront businesses

and homes on Chris Crafts, usually with our dog, and am very pleased to have picked that particular habit back up later in life. Of course, Green Lake’s history with wooden boats predates even my own. Early wooden steam launches delivered guests and goods alike to the luxurious hotels that lined the shores. These boats would have been built right here in town, as there was no way to truck them from far away. Green Lake’s first fishing guides used wooden rowboats to take their customers to all the best spots.

lucky to call this place home, and I look forward to many more years on Big Green. Joe Norton is a Master Boat Builder and Founder of Norton Boat Works.

Today, the descendants of those boats, sleek pleasure crafts and runabouts far removed from their utilitarian past, can still be spotted cruising through our pristine waters. Which is not to say that we’ve forgotten our past. Every August, the wharf downtown hosts its annual Wooden Boat Show. And I’m still around, doing what I’ve always done. I’ve been

Similar to traditional sailing, iceboats are divided into various classes based on hull design or sail area. Unlike traditional sailing, they operate off of apparent wind, which allows them to go extremely fast. While many classes have max hull speeds of 60–80 mph, in the right conditions, fast iceboats are able to exceed 100 mph. Follow facebook.com/iceboating for more information and upcoming events. Birdwatching in the Green Lake Area Tick-tick…tick-tick-tick…tick-tick… tick-tick-tick. This rapid and continuous clicking sound emanated from a damp sedge meadow last spring at the White River Marsh Wildlife Area. “Yellow rail,” I quietly called to anyone within earshot, pointing out into the marsh grasses. I didn’t want to frighten the bird by yelling too loudly, but at the same time I wanted to get everyone’s attention since this was a special bird that they would want to be alerted to. The yellow rail is a fairly rare, or at least rarely encountered, migrant in Green Lake County. They are quite diminutive

habits, so hearing their distinctive calls is the best way to detect one’s presence. The White River Marsh State Wildlife Area is an excellent place to look and listen for a wide variety of birds, especially April through October. The mostly gravel White River Road (also a state-designated Rustic Road) provides excellent access through the marsh since it crosses through most of the major habitats. Another great birding spot in the county is the Grand River Marsh State Wildlife Area, west of Kingston. You can check the DNR website for maps and information about these two sites. There are also several conservancy properties in the Green Lake area that provide trails and public access, including Sunnyside Conservancy, Winnebago Trail, Hammer’s Trail and the Norwegian Bay boardwalk. In the late fall, early winter and early spring, waterbirds, such as ducks, swans, loons and grebes, often gather on the waters of Green Lake, and the majestic bald eagle is frequently spotted along the lakeshore. is home to the oldest golf course in Wisconsin. Just two miles west is one of the top public courses in the country. A 10-minute drive to the north, you will find yet another gem of a golf course. Finally, a quick 20-minute drive west offers a unique experience. All of these courses have changed over the years. Holes have been added, foliage has been removed and yardages have been modified. The changes have made these courses that much better.

Golfing by Todd Weir

I am very fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of Wisconsin. Growing up in Ripon, just a few miles east, I was able to enjoy the Green Lake area during my childhood. Mostly, the lake was where I would spend my time, whether it was after work, a weekend in the summer or ice fishing with my family during the winter months. The waters of Green Lake were where I typically could be found during my free time.

Then I picked up the game of golf. I discovered Green Lake has in its immediate surroundings four stunning courses that provide 9 9 holes of wonderful golf. The city of Green Lake

Tuscumbia Golf Course is the oldest course in the state, located in the oldest resort town west of Niagara Falls. That alone should make you want to come play this course! Its traditional style offers you the opportunity to play among mature tree lines and straight fairways. Accuracy off the tee is essential. But not to worry if your shot has a bit of a slice; the famed “Tuscy Punch” shot is part of every golfer’s game who is up to the challenge of playing Tuscumbia. Even the pros have to punch it out once in a while. The Golf Courses of Lawsonia has been ranked in the top 75 public courses in the country. They offer two very distinct courses: The Links and The Woodlands. Both courses play exactly as they are named. With recent improvements on The Links, you feel as though you are golfing in Scotland. The views from both courses are spectacular, and rarely do you play a round of golf without spotting deer, turkey or even bald eagles. Mascoutin Golf Club is set in gently rolling hills along the Fox River. They offer 27 holes of championship golf. From lengthy par fours to reachable

par fives and multiple water holes, this course has it all. With such a beautiful setting, men, women and junior golfers alike can enjoy the appeal of Mascoutin. White Lake Country Club in Montello is carved out of ancient glacier lands nestled among hills, woods and ponds. It offers three sets of tees on each hole to accommodate golfers of all abilities. You can play 18 holes of golf and then head to the sandy beaches of White Lake to complete your day. Considering myself lucky to be living in Green Lake is an understatement. Not only does the lake provide opportunity, but having access to four incredible golf courses is equally fortunate. Make it a point to come and play in Green Lake and enjoy “The Good Life.” Todd Weir is President of the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Owner of Pinnacle Plumbing, LLC.

Disc Golf by Nathan Mirr Disc golf is more than my hobby—it’s my obsession. Living in Green Lake, it was also a problem. I couldn’t satisfy that need for “chains” without a fairly significant drive. The obvious answer was to build a local course. Actually, not just any course, but a phenomenal tournament/event caliber, 18-hole course that also happens to be family friendly. We found the ideal location in rural, beautifully maintained Zobel Park, just north of Green Lake on Highway 49. And pardon the borrowed phrase, but we built it, and they have come! The disc course designed by Pat Blake and built through grassroots funding by local volunteers incorporates the natural flow of the park’s hills, flats and varied vegetation, from the first hole to the last, long, downhill, air-it-out bomb. This incredible free course has been reviewed as one of the best in Wisconsin. It’s definitely worth a stop! Nathan Mirr cofounded the Zobel Park Disc Golf Course.

Biking Green Lake

WIND

by Todd Sharp Photo by Jim Koepnick

I headed out for a bike ride on a cloudless day and diverted from my normal ride around Green Lake by heading west toward the “Huckleberries.” This is a favored route by many local cyclists because of the light traffic, gorgeous terrain, abundance of wildlife, smooth roads, isolation and solitude. The remote route skirts along the south shore of the Fox River, where I saw a couple paddling their canoe, poles flopped over the side trying to snag lunch. The ride along the river is flat, fast, shaded and quiet. I realized I hadn’t seen any cars or trucks passing by. I saw a vehicle as I rode through Princeton for an espresso, but none on the country roads. Everyone must have been where they wanted to be that day because no one was moving. As I rode back toward Green Lake, I saw a large deer convention in a lush green alfalfa field. When they noticed me, they jumped away in every direction. One very young buck ran toward me and appeared to fly over the road. I don’t think he made it to hunting season. As I crossed Highway 23, I rode back to town and stopped at the wharf to dip my hot toes in the nice cool lake. I discovered why no one was on the roads; they were all contently playing in the yards, fishing off the docks, eating lunch or sailing on the lake. We have many bike routes with flat trails and huge hills. And if you’re lucky, some days are nearly car-less. Todd Sharp is an avid cyclist, and his weekly “Prune” column in the Green Laker offers readers a cheerfully skewed perspective on the aging process. visitgreenlake.com | 31

I had the pleasure of being a part of Green Lake’s Concerts in the Park series in 2015. We opened our season with the Ripon High School Jazz Band, led by their ever-energetic band director. That same evening, I chanced upon a gentleman who brought his aging mother to the concert, and he explained, “We don’t normally see much reaction out of her [his mother],

but this evening was different. She was alert and seemed to have come alive by the jazz music she was hearing.” I knew then that the summer was going to be special. We continued the season with a variety of musical styles, from classic rock to the ever-popular polka, including grand champion fiddlers The Georgia Rae Family Band. And let’s not forget Family Picnic Night, held every July, where you are treated to not one but two bands, which includes an explosive halftime show from many talented members of the University of Wisconsin Marching Band. I enjoyed watching the smiles and the foot tapping week after week, and am looking forward to this season. It is true that music does heal; it is an expression of humanity, and we are all touched by it.

by Maria Dietrich It has been 18 years since Thrasher Opera House, at 506 Mill Street in downtown Green Lake, was brought back to life as a performance venue. Built in 1910 by Charlie Thrasher, the civic-minded son of a pioneer Green Lake family, Thrasher Opera House hosted entertainment throughout its early years in the form of vaudeville and traveling theatrical companies, silent movies, films, school activities, dances and basketball games. Films were shown until World War II, but eventually the building languished as a warehouse. Driven by his love of Green Lake and its history, the late Ron Hagstrom persevered in purchasing and refurbishing the wonderful old building. The restoration was successfully completed, and in 2001, the nonprofit Thrasher Opera House Corporation purchased the structure from Hagstrom with the help of donations from many far-sighted area residents. Thrasher Opera House once again became an outstanding venue for musical, educational and cultural events. Thrasher’s commitment to showcasing top-flight talent in a small, intimate

Designated as a City of Green Lake Historical Structure, Thrasher Opera House is listed on the Wisconsin and the National Registers of Historic Places. The building boasts a large auditorium with a decorative tin ceiling, great acoustics, a full stage with wings and a balcony, all of which have been restored to original condition by local craftspeople. The Thrasher organization subsequently purchased the adjacent office building and created a bar in the lobby, which serves as a lounge during concert intermissions and an art gallery with rotating exhibits year-round. Thrasher Opera House is a hub of activity. People travel from all over the Midwest, and sometimes farther, to see visiting artists such as Janis Ian, Livingston Taylor, George Winston and Peter Yarrow. The Missoula Children’s Theatre is in residence twice a year, giving 60 area children the opportunity to participate in a musical theater production, free of charge, every January and June. In addition, the venue is used for everything from high school plays and dances to weddings and receptions, community and business meetings, lectures and piano recitals and other uses limited only by the imagination. The 2016 season offers another year of high-caliber performers, including musicians Willy Porter, the Alan Kelly Gang from Ireland, Canadian Celtic fiddler April Verch, Blues artist Guy Davis, David Lindley, Paul Thorn, legendary Jimmy Webb, improvisational comedy of Second City and more. Thrasher Program Director Roby Irvin has many more acts in the pipeline. Subscribe to the monthly e-newsletter at thrasheroperahouse.com to be sure you’re among the first to hear about them! Brew Fest by Scott Krause

2016 marks Heidel House’s 5th annual Brew Fest. It has been incredible to watch the event evolve, from welcoming 20 breweries and 250 attendees in its first year to a complete weekend celebrating Wisconsin craft beer. Besides the main tasting event, which now features over 130 beers and 700 guests, we offer a Homebrew How To the evening before, Evensong Spa

Soccer Camp by Dusty Walker

The Tom Jones Memorial Green Lake Soccer Camp was started in 2009, and today it is run by a few local residents. The camp is open to all ages from 4 to 18. Coach Scott Haywood

creates beer-themed services and Grey Rock features a beer-pairing dinner. We have also added a Wine Fest in November with all Wisconsin-made wines, which we hope will continue to grow in the same way Brew Fest has. It is truly a pleasure to see how guests enjoy mingling with the brewery or winery representatives, and how we are able to help support our state’s unique products.

Memorial Day by Mark Kramer

has coached the camp since it began, and is licensed with the United States Soccer Foundation. Approximately 50 kids participate every year, and it’s a great way for the children to learn new skills and make new friends!

Shortly after I returned from Vietnam, I marched with the color guard leading the Memorial Day parade in Green Lake for the first time. As we turned the corner onto Mill Street, I was moved to see the crowd lining the street. When we passed by, the crowd stood not only to honor the flag, but to cheer for all of the veterans. I was filled with emotion. I still am now, and at every parade, nearly 40 years later. Our veterans are overwhelmed by the support and pride shown by the Green Lake community.

Dusty Walker is Cofounder of the Tom Jones Memorial Soccer Camp.

Mark Kramer is Commander of American Legion Post 306.

Chalk Walk by Bette Sliwa

In 2005, my friend Teeter Allen and I were thinking about fun, new ways to bring families to the Green Lake area. Teeter is a retired school teacher, and I owned a shop in town. We both share a love for children, the arts and creativity. A few conversations later, Green Lake Chalk Walk was born. Coming off of its 11th year, I’m proud to say the event continues to grow, and the art continues to amaze me. This is truly a family event. Artists of all ages and levels of ability participate, and together they cover the Green Lake sidewalks with dozens of beautiful, unique chalk compositions.

Sunsplash by Ariel Lee

One of Heidel House’s longest-lasting community events is Sunsplash, the resort’s annual lakeside party featuring live music on the beach, summertime favorite foods and sightseeing cruises. Taking photos during Sunsplash on my second day of work was a wonderful way for me to become acquainted with Green Lake, seeing firsthand the unique and laid-back culture that the lake offers for both visitors and locals to enjoy. Though I was new, guests made me feel welcome, and I was able to strike up conversations, creating a really positive and fun-filled memory to begin my time at Heidel House. Ariel Lee is the Marketing Coordinator at Heidel House Resort & Spa.

Wisconsin State Chili Cookoff by Roberta Martin

As a resident, there is nothing better than seeing Deacon Mills Park bustling with people on a sunny Saturday afternoon. For years now, friends and I make sure to stop by the Wisconsin State Chili Cookoff. Food, people laughing and having fun and entertainment, what more can you ask for on a day by the lake?

Harvest Fest by Roberta Martin

Having lived in the area for many years, I thought I knew the significance of Harvest Fest. But it was when I worked at a Green Lake restaurant during Harvest Fest that I felt the true impact. There was such a tremendous influx of customers that I couldn’t imagine how it would ever end. This past year, I was reminded again. This time not because I was waitressing, but because I helped run the event. A two-day craft show! A farmer’s market! Food vendors! Fun! Family games! Entertainment! A car show! I get excited just writing about it because it’s one of those events that truly makes Green Lake so special. Harvest Fest

This was the first opportunity I’ve had to try 30 different chili recipes, and I left full! Some were spicier, different types of meat were used and it was fun to guess what the secret ingredient was in each cup. Fun for the whole family, going to Wisconsin’s State Chili Cookoff is a

joy. Not only is it one of my favorite events, but it’s something that’s unique to Green Lake. Maybe this year I’ll be a contestant! Roberta Martin is the Marketing and Project Coordinator for Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Last year, I was fortunate to join the ranks of Chili Cookoff judges. Everyone around town had tips for me on surviving my day as an official chili judge extraordinaire. We were in our own tent and were given t-shirts, a palette cleanser and a drink. And then we were off! There were over 30 different chili recipes, and the responsibility fell on our shoulders to decide which one was best.

is a time where we all come together to have fun. It is an event with things for everyone, from the tiniest little kid who wants to go to the petting zoo to a grandma who wants to check out the crafts up to a dad who has an interest in classic cars. My day started before the sun rose with checking in cars for the car show. Hearing the rumblings of their engines up and down the street and looking around, it was clear that I was seeing the calm before the storm. But what a wonderful storm it was. Seeing the happy faces enjoying food, wearing Green Lake apparel, buying wonderful crafts and enjoying the music is what we’re here for. Those two days, while the busiest I may have ever seen, were also some of the

most fun. What could be better than to have a hand in creating a special event like Harvest Fest for the city I love? I can’t wait to do it again this year, and I hope to see all of you on Mill Street having a great time! Roberta Martin is the Marketing and Project Coordinator for Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Oktoberfest by Carrie Ivacko Oktoberfest is a festive fall event that celebrates the German spirit in both traditional and uniquely Heidel House ways. Resort guests and area residents put on their best lederhosen and come together to dance to live

friendly competitions, like the brat eating contest, Team Lachenspiel and Das Boot Relay. Carrie Ivacko is the Marketing Manager at Heidel House Resort & Spa. visitgreenlake.com | 39

Green Lake Public School District

Photos provided by Green Lake School District

by Mary Allen

If the walls could talk, what would they say? I have often thought about this in my 30-plus years of working in the school. Would they talk about their competitive sports teams and the unique relationship the high school football team had with the Green Bay Packers in the 60s and 70s? Would they talk about the weekends full of fun: ice fishing, hunting and watching movies at Thrasher Opera House? Would they talk about the young boys and girls who left their small community to serve in wars in faraway lands? Would they talk about the high-quality music, art and drama programs? There has certainly been a lot to talk about since the Green Lake School District began in 1845 as a one-room schoolhouse on the southwest corner of Scott and Mill Streets. Changes were made to enlarge the school until the 1950s, when the building was razed and the current structure was built. Today, the school is the heart of the community and continues to hold the history of thousands of students and teachers who have passed through its doors. As I walk the halls, I hear the same conversations: sports, music, the play, weekend activities, future plans, homework and friends. The past, present and future come together in Green Lake to make the school a truly special place. Mary Allen is the Principal/Special Education Director for the Green Lake Public School District.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Green Lake Conference Center by Jean Cornelius

Links ranked #13 of Top 50 Most Fun Public Courses by Golf Digest

It’s an amazing history; what began as a dairy farm in the 1800s became a luxurious country club in the 1920s. In 1944, the estate became a Christian conference center. Today, Green Lake Conference Center (GLCC) hosts over 400 groups annually, and its experienced staff continue a long tradition of serving with excellence. Families love to gather at GLCC. The Huntspergers of Wichita, Kansas, say, “Green Lake is very special to our family. Our children worked there in college, and one daughter got married there. A wonderful place for renewal and feeling God’s presence, whether in nature or in the conversations with the staff. We were truly blessed during our family reunion there, as we always are.” GLCC is a treasure for the Green Lake community. Hammer’s Trail and Winnebago Trail are great for hiking. They are maintained by the Green Lake Conservancy, and Hammer’s Trail is ideal for snowshoeing. Bikers connect with us via the City of Green Lake Trail built by Green Lake Greenways. Participants in the Ripon Medical Center Triathlon and Green Lake’s 13dot1 Half Marathon & 5K like traversing our tree-lined and lakeside roads. The 54-acre native prairie is a wonderful place to wander, spot butterflies and enjoy nature.

Links (18): Tall fescue grass, raised greens and daunting bunkers Woodlands (18): Tree-lined fairways, water hazards and a par-three cliff hole with a 65’ drop

GLCC is a unique place that renews and energizes people the moment they drive through our gates. For more information about Green Lake Conference Center, visit glcc.org or facebook.com/glccaba. Jean Cornelius is the Communications Director for Green Lake Conference Center. visitgreenlake.com | 45

Town Square by Fran Hill

No trip to Green Lake is complete without a visit to our fabulous community center, Town Square. Located in the historic Green Lake County Courthouse and adjacent facilities, Town Square was created and is supported entirely by the people of our community. It’s a place we gather for meetings and parties, where we take a wide variety of classes and where we create our future together. Here, you can learn to cook, take an art class, shop for

locally created artwork, work out at our 24-hour fitness center or even start your own business in the commercial kitchen business incubator, Courthouse Kitchens. Town Square is a program of Green Lake Renewal, the same nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that built the fabulous Deacon Mills Wharf. For more on what’s happening at Town Square, stop in to our front office at 492 Hill Street, call 920.807.0008 or visit greenlakerenewal.org. Fran Hill is the CEO of Town Square.

Shopping Queen—that’s what my girlfriends call me. I bear the title with pride as I enjoy weaving in and out of charming shops in Green Lake, visiting with shop owners, seeing cool items on shelves and finding a unique something for my home or as a gift. Even though my girlfriends tease, when they visit my home in Green Lake, they, too, love doing the “shop crawl,” and are tickled with a one-of-a-kind find. From a special piece of jewelry to hand-carved wooden feathers to lovely antiques to a Green Lake memento, the shops offer a variety of cool treasures, and the hunt for that special thing is so much fun! I adore Green Lake’s variety of shops, darling coffee shop, outstanding library, Town Square and the old-fashioned ambience created by the clock on the square, trees, flowers, banners, benches and more. Not only do I enjoy shopping this quaint downtown, supporting local business owners who provide my shopping pleasure and services is important to me. My friends know to bring nothing when visiting, as all is purchased locally. The Shopping Queen says, “Shop Green Lake!” Jo Ellen Madden is a Green Lake second-homeowner, and Board Member of the Downtown Green Lake Renewal Project.
