Known as the oldest resort community west of Niagara Falls, Green Lake is a vibrant little lake town only a few hours from home. With a gorgeous shoreline of over 20 miles, Green Lake is the deepest natural inland lake in Wisconsin. The crown jewel of the area,

generations of visitors have enjoyed our community as their favorite place to relax or spend a day lakeside. Prior to the settlement of the area, Winnebago Native Americans, now called the Ho-Chunk, visited
and camped near the lake. For the Ho-Chunk, the lake was very holy and the home of their water spirit, Daycholah. After a treaty forcibly relocated Native Americans outside the state and many became ill with disease, their presence became less common. At the turn of the century, the last ruling Ho-Chunk Native, Chief Highknocker, passed away in a tragic swimming accident outside of town in the Puchyan River.

Early travelers from as far south as New Orleans and as far east as Philadelphia arrived by train and made the last 10-mile leg of their journey by horse and coach along winding, dusty roads. Years later, whole families drove hundreds or thousands of miles across the country to experience a slice of the good life in one of America’s oldest resort communities. The attraction seemed to be the cool breezes captured by the multistory wraparound porches of our largeframe hotels, providing travelers with an escape from the summer heat. Or perhaps it was the lake itself, glimmering with invitation on a sunny day. For decades, people have cruised through our cool waters on steamers for sightseeing and sailed along the shore for sport and for fun. Fishing and hunting from the area’s ample stock of fish and game gave visitors yet another way to pass their days in leisure. While many parts of our history have changed, much like the visitors of years gone by, today you can enjoy the same fresh summer breeze and relaxing atmosphere that makes Green Lake special.

With such beautiful scenery, it only makes sense that Green Lake is a destination with plentiful opportunities to find handcrafted goods and fine art. Imagine yourself enjoying a glass of wine on a Friday night where you get to talk to the artist whose painting is currently hanging on the wall. You can do that in Green Lake! With gallery nights at Town Square, visitors have the chance to start their weekend off by visiting with artists and friends. You can peruse the gallery for the latest in local art, and check out the stores inside our historic courthouse for more wonderful handmade products to spruce up your home. Additionally, on most weekends crafters and local food producers sell their products at The Market at Town Square, so no matter when you’re visiting, there’s something handmade waiting for you. Now imagine yourself enjoying a wonderful concert at Thrasher and it's intermission. You could wait in your seat for the music to begin again or you could see what is hanging in their lobby gallery. for your enjoyment to photographs from a nature-loving local resident, there’s nothing better than catching a great concert and having the opportunity to see some art while you’re at it. In addition to intermission, sometimes Thrasher Opera House will host a debut party to premiere new art in the gallery, so keep your eyes peeled! Wallenfang’s of Green Lake is not only a true staple of our community, but also has an upstairs gallery filled with beautiful artwork and woodwork contributed by the family. It’s a one-stop shop for delicious treats and beautifully created and cultivated items that would make a great gift for any family member or friend. As if this wasn’t enough art for any visitor, twice a year the whole town becomes a haven for crafters and artists. In August, for two days, the Fine Art Fair takes over Playground Park. Along with a multitude of wonderfully talented artists, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a nice walk lakeside while perusing everything from paintings to world-class glass artists.
Lake, and we hope that you stop by to see what Harvest Fest is all about. Throughout the year, there are so many great opportunities to enjoy the arts in Green Lake. The chance to immerse yourself in the arts is at your fingertips and now is the time to plan a trip.
Last but not least is Harvest Fest, the best fall festival around! Over 100 crafters set up booths throughout downtown to sell their handmade goods. There’s a farmer’s market filled with bountiful produce and other food products from local farmers, food booths from our local restaurants and service groups and fun to be had by all. Featuring the “sweetest little venue in the Midwest,” a beloved outdoor concert series and a festival devoted to classic music, Green Lake has many opportunities for visitors and residents alike to enjoy live music. Throughout the summer season, there’s a concert almost every Wednesday night at Deacon Mills Park. Bands come from as far as Texas to play our little stage, and every week features a different genre of tunes. From polka music to classic rock and roll, the weekly Concerts in the Park features music for everyone no matter their age. While every week brings us a way to spend time together as a community, we really look forward to our annual Family Picnic Night. It’s a great opportunity to see the University of Wisconsin– Madison Marching Band up close and in person. The talented students jump up and down, dance to the beat of
the drums and encourage visitors to dance along. Stopping for dinner is not necessary as there’s food and concessions available as well, making it a must-see Green Lake event. Another way to enjoy live music in Green Lake is to stop by Thrasher Opera House, located in the heart of downtown. A beautifully restored venue, the Thrasher features talented artists of all genres. Artfully brought back to its former glory by a committed group of local residents, the Opera House is something that fills us with pride. Other communities may have live music venues, but Thrasher Opera House brings unique arts and live music to the Green Lake area. Thrasher Opera house is loved both by our community and the musicians who visit. Music just sounds a little better coming off of their stage, and it’s not just the acoustics. Having a world-class

hall play music almost every weekend is a blessing. This year’s schedule is something to look forward to, and with such affordable tickets, there’s no reason to miss a show when you’re in town. Last but not least is the Green Lake Festival of Music, which has been gracing us with live classical music for over 20 years. series, where visitors and residents will have the opportunity to sit lakeside and enjoy a concert where all the music fits this year’s theme: the importance of water. We’re really lucky to have a great puddle of water here in Green Lake, and it seems like the right time to honor one of the reasons our community is so special.

Some five years ago, I walked up the steps to the Green Lake courthouse, listened to the quiet in the hallway and almost heard echoes from the room where my defunct first marriage license was archived, not to mention the crack of a gavel where my plea for innocence for a speeding infraction didn’t go over so well. I was an Illinois guy walking into this Wisconsin county’s former legal operations, ironically interested in the welfare of the place. Far in the corner of the lobby, I heard the whisper of a paintbrush held by a woman named Fran Hill. After listening to Fran tell the story about Town Square, I realized the significance of that paintbrush and what it could mean to the county and the City of Green Lake. Thus began my new journey as a volunteer filmmaker.
Jump forward to the present and you can enter this magnificent old building on any given weekday or weekend, summer, fall, winter or spring, and the original concerns of how a black hole
would consume the former county seat have been replaced by a cornucopia of activity and community enrichment. When I had the opportunity to pose and jump with a group of kids wearing red shirts with stars on them for part of the original Town Square campaign and brochure, photographer Leslie Schwartz told me her father’s (renowned artist Lester Schwartz) artwork would have a special gallery. If you walk in front, you’ll notice Lester’s extraordinary sculptures have artistically transformed the experience from a place of imprisonment to an environment for positive attitude and mental and physical health where the bicycle folks meet up Saturdays. Speaking more of health, in the lower level, Green Lake Fitness 24/7 is a workout center rivaling anyone’s personal or commercial fitness club, with mounted working television monitors and the latest aerobic and weight training equipment. Get your own entrance key and go any time, day or night. This is an obvious plus, considering Green Lake’s climate. Down the hallway of this lower level, you might consider taking a cooking course in the commercial kitchen, a spectacular facility developed by Dr.

Barry Rogers and his wife, Ann, recently donated to Green Lake Renewal, the nonprofit organization that operates Town Square and Green Lake Fitness 24/7. If you feel an entrepreneurial urge, this is an ideal place to roll out your private recipe of your Aunt Jane’s brownies. This kitchen is home for a number of outstanding caterers in town, and my daughter, Colleen, and son, Carlton, have enjoyed pie-making seminars and cookie decorating.
Still on this lower level, you can join any number of art classes for children and adults. My kids spent a number of Saturday mornings working in watercolors or making holiday decorations. In a shop room on another Saturday, a master wood craftsman taught me, Carlton and Colleen how to create wonderful Christmas angels. Since Carlton also enjoys making fairly sophisticated Star Wars costumes, master seamstress Kim Bates, with the
patience of Yoda, helped him create a bathrobe, which he proudly wears before bed. Recently, Deb and I enjoyed a presentation about bats. Experienced “Bat Man,” Tom Wagner, showed us his high-frequency sound device, which converted inaudible bat sonar to an audible signal as the animals flew outside Town Square by the pond. Speaking of flying animals, my friend Tom Schultz, the amazing ornithologist and artist, presented his work in the lobby. He is a nationally known illustrator, having worked with National Geographic. By the way, his wife, Wendy, runs the Green Lake Half Marathon, so don’t forget to register for 2017 online or at Town Square. Once called the largest resort area west of Niagara Falls, Green Lake has historically hosted people from as far as New Orleans. Now the revival is happening in Green Lake and Town Square wants to extend its reach with both a sustaining business plan as well as an environmental focus. Just off the visitgreenlake.com | 17
lobby is the Green Lake Association (GLA) office, where Stephanie Prellwitz, the executive director of GLA, is doing her best to help all of us understand the importance of water quality and the watershed surrounding our lake. The simple truth is everyone in the county—boaters, fisherman, hunters, farmers and residents—all need to change some behavior to improve the water quality of this most important natural resource in the middle of the state. Just as important, Town Square is the nonprofit Green Lake Renewal’s base for working to answer questions, like how can the City of Green Lake attract more business and the younger generation. In this same lobby, Green Lake’s winter brings the wonderful farmer’s market, with fresh produce and crafts, inside. Muffins are my Saturday morning favorite. Another note which heralds more good things happening, founder of Freeland, Steve Galster, has opened an office in Town Square with help from his sister
Evelyn. Freeland is an international organization focused on halting the poaching of endangered species and human trafficking in Southeast Asia, China, India and Africa. Son of Cynthia and former American Baptist Assembly caretaker Russ, both Green Lake natives, Steve has been storied on Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and Anderson Cooper 360°. Thanks to Steve, Green Lake is now recognized internationally!

Birdwatching in the Green Lake Area by Tom Schultz Green Lake Country is blessed by its wealth of habitats for birds and wildlife, and many good birding locations have trails and are open for public access. Depending on the time of year, some places will vary considerably in what birdlife might be present, while other sites might provide great opportunities to find birds during any season. In general, the best time of year for birdwatching is spring and summer— typically April through September— when migrants are passing through or individuals are engaged in territorial displays and breeding activities. Over 250 bird species have been found in the area, including a nice variety of waterfowl, hawks, owls, woodpeckers,

thrushes, sparrows, warblers and finches. Some of the favorites include Common Loon, American White Pelican, Wild Turkey, American Woodcock, Pileated Woodpecker, Scarlet Tanager, Baltimore Oriole and Indigo Bunting. In winter, one can encounter interesting birds like Rough-legged Hawk, Snowy Owl and Snow Bunting, all of which have migrated south from their breeding grounds in the Arctic tundra. Many unusual or rare birds have also been found here, such as Iceland Gull, Yellow Rail, Snowy Plover, Summer Tanager, Carolina Wren, Bohemian Waxwing and Harris’s Sparrow. Starting relatively close to the lake, there are a number of conservancy sites
that can provide a good birdwatching experience. One of the best is Sunnyside Conservancy off Lakeview Drive, which is east of Green Lake along Silver Creek Inlet and contains several lagoons and about two miles of trails. Other conservancy hiking areas include Hammer’s Trail and Winnebago Trail, both of which are located within the Green Lake Conference Center and overlook the lake. Norwegian Bay Conservancy is another excellent place to go, and has a long boardwalk that extends through a marsh to the shore of Norwegian Bay. There is an excellent full-color trail guide to these properties available through the Green Lake Conservancy. Information can be found at greenlakeconservancy.org.
A little farther afield are two very large state-owned properties that can provide wonderful birding opportunities. One is the White River Wildlife Area (north of Princeton and west of Berlin), and the other is Grand River Wildlife Area (west of Kingston). Another good hiking spot is the Snake Creek Wetlands Trail, which follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way between Swamp and St. Marie Roads. There are many opportunities to learn more about birds and nature locally, such as through monthly events sponsored by The Green Team—a partnership of Green Lake Conservancy, Green Lake Association, Green Lake School District and Green Lake Sanitary District. You can obtain a copy of the schedule from the Green Lake Association.
Thomas Schultz has been working as an artist/illustrator for nearly 40 years, with his work published in a variety of books and bird field guides, including the National Geographic Society’s Field Guide to the Birds of North America, and also for the Peterson Series Warblers field guide. Tom is an active birder with a strong interest in field identification, which is an outgrowth of his bird illustration work. He is actively involved with the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology—recently as president— and also serves as WSO’s field trip coordinator. He lives in the Green Lake area with his wife, Wendy, and they are both officers of the Green Lake Bird and Nature Club.

Another idea might be to check out the Green Lake Bird and Nature Club, which holds monthly meetings at Town Square through most of the year, and also has periodic local birding field trips. An annual Green Lake Bird Festival is held each spring as a part of the City of Green Lake now being a member of Bird City Wisconsin. A wonderful birdwatching kit containing binoculars, a spotting scope and guide books can also be checked out from the Caestecker Public Library.

visit to Green Lake is complete without at least a little jaunt in the woods. Visitors can find a very convenient map located in the center of this guide, which will show you some suggested routes for biking and some recommended hiking spots. The map can be a little hard to bring along on the ride, but we’ve got you covered. Available on the outside of our old courthouse is our bike garden, which has a large bike trails map and a really pleasant place to
rest. While you’re familiarizing yourself with the map, Town Square, inside of the old county courthouse, is a great place to refill your water bottles and get a pulse on what’s happening around town. If you look closely off County Road T on the map in the center of this guide, you’ll find a local favorite: the Norwegian Bay Boardwalk. Beginning in the woods, continuing through marsh and ending at one of the most fabulous views of our lake, it’s a wonderful walk that’s great for the whole family. The Norwegian Bay Boardwalk is only one of many available places to hike or bike in Green Lake, and while it would take weeks to visit all of them, hopefully on your visit you’re able to make it to at least one beautiful spot.

Ev ents Are you looking to see what happens in Green Lake? We are not what you would call an inactive town. Quite the opposite. We always have something happening, whether it’s our huge 4th of July celebration, Water Ski Show or renowned Harvest Fest. Our summer season begins with our weekly concert series, where residents and visitors gather at our beautiful bandshell for a show on Wednesday nights. From polka to classic rock, there’s a show for everyone. You can bring your own picnic or purchase freshly popped popcorn from Guth’s and snacks from North Bay to enjoy the show. Making a night of live music outside is a tradition for families of all ages. One of the best places to watch fireworks on 4th of July, Green Lake lights up with a patriotic celebration and one of the best firework shows in the state. The town begins to bustle with kids games, live music and snacks during the afternoon. A whole day to celebrate the holiday concludes at dusk with a fireworks show over the lake. It can be enjoyed lakeside at Deacon Mills Park, on a boat or even on the pier at Norton’s on Lawson Drive. No matter where you view it, it’s an event that cannot be missed.

Throughout July and early August, we welcome a fine art show, a celebration of the beginning of summer and The Green Lake Water Ski Show from the Pewaukee Water Ski Club. Almost every weekend, there’s something fun on and in Green Lake, and we couldn’t be happier about it. Moving into September, we have three big events. Markesan
Hidden away in southern Green Lake County is the City of Markesan, a grand community that once numbered among the richest in the nation due to its momentous agricultural heritage and proximity to thousands of acres of lakes where fun and fishing can be found in ample supply.
