Green Lake has a fascinating history of being a beautiful place for people to live
Green Lake Buildings: Then and Now by Alyssa Paulsen THEN
and visit. The Winnebago Native Americans began settling in what is now Green Lake in the 1600s. Their last reigning chief passed away in 1911. The first white settlers arrived in the area in 1835 with Anson Dart and John Sherwood beginning to plot the Village of Dartford in 1847, which would later become Green Lake. While Green Lake has the claim to fame as being the deepest natural inland lake in the state of Wisconsin, the community is also believed to be home to the first summer resort west of Niagara Falls. This was only the start of something amazing. As early as the 1870s, people began coming from all over the nation— as far away as New Orleans and Philadelphia—to enjoy their vacations in Green Lake doing many of the same activities tourists do today: golfing at some of the most premier golf courses in the area, swimming in the lake’s sparkling waters, fishing, hunting, boating, shopping, sightseeing, and so much more.
NOW
THE GREEN LAKE COUNTY COURTHOUSE & JAIL—The Green Lake County Court House was built in 1898 after the County seat had been moved from Berlin to Dartford, then to Princeton and back to Dartford. The building has had additions and remodeling over the years, and was last used as a courthouse in 2011.
THEN
TUSCUMBIA COUNTRY CLUB— Known as the oldest golf course in Wisconsin, Tuscumbia Country Club was established in 1896 as a six-hole course, but quickly expanded to a nine-hole course in 1905, with the first clubhouse being built at this time. The second set of nine holes was installed between 1918 and 1919. The pictured clubhouse burned down in September of 2004.
TOWN SQUARE—In 2012, the Town Square Community Center opened its doors in the former Green Lake County Courthouse building. Throughout these past few years, Town Square has developed into a hub in the center of town where community members and visitors alike can take part in classes in the areas of fitness and wellness, art, cooking, and more; a place for organizations to meet; and a home to Green Lake Fitness 24/7, the Green Lake Association, Green Lake Kitchens, Hangars Resale Therapy thrift shop, the Lester Schwartz Art Gallery and artist’s co-op, Green Lake Conservancy, and so much more!
NOW
TUSCUMBIA COUNTRY CLUB— One Hundred Thirteen years later, Tuscumbia Country Club still exists today. Its clubhouse was rebuilt shortly after the 2004 fire, and is the perfect destination for avid golfers to hit the green. Tuscumbia’s beautiful rolling courses are maintained in stunning condition throughout the golfing season, and the course offers a number of great deals for players as well.

People of Green Lake by Alyssa Paulsen
J.R. BROOKS GENERAL STORE— In 1869, a general store operated by H.B Hamilton and Milo Brooks ran for two years in what was the former S.W. Wolcott merchandise store. The store was then run by Brooks and Lester Clawson and remained in the Brooks family as long as they lived. The second floor was used by local clubs, including the Grand Army of the Republic, which is now the American Legion. It is one of the few original Dartford buildings left today. THEN
DUESCHER’S SHOE AND HARNESS SHOP—Oscar Duescher sold and repaired shoes and harnesses for more than 50 years in this building owned by Charlie Thrasher. The upper story was called Thrasher’s Hall and was home to many meetings and events in the village. THEN
BUS & LIVERY BARN—Ezra Whiting operated a livery and bus business out of this building located on the south end of Mill Street, which became a thriving business with good carriages and omnibuses, throughout the late 1800s.
SPECIAL PROPERTIES—Today, the corner office on Mill and Hill Streets is Special Properties, Ltd., a successful real estate business dedicated to assisting clients in selling or purchasing properties.
NOW
GUTH’S CANDY—Today, 509 Mill Street holds delicious treats all ages can enjoy. Guth’s Candy has a rich history and has been in the Guth family since 1921. The first of two shops began in Waupun with the Green Lake shop opening in 2016.
Even in the early 1900s, families found Green Lake to be the perfect spot to swim, boat, fish, and much more.
NOW
NORTH BAY SPORT & LIQUOR—501 South Street is now home to North Bay Sport & Liquor. The shop carries everything from fishing and hunting gear throughout the seasons; beer, wine and spirits; Green Lake apparel; souvenirs; and much more!

Wool bathing suits were a hit for men and women in the early 1900s as they visited Green Lake for summer vacations with the whole family.
Canoeing was a great way to spend time on the lake for a bit of afternoon fun and continues to be a favorite pastime for many living in or visiting Green Lake.
historical green lake
Kids of all ages enjoyed the relaxing waves of Green Lake in the early 1900s.
Several golfers hit the green on Tuscumbia Golf Course, the oldest golf course in Wisconsin circa the early 1900s.
The Queen of the Lake was built in the 1900s by Norton Boat Works. The boat was used for tours of Green Lake by tourists and residents alike.
Family picnics in Green Lake in the early 1900s featured an elaborate spread of delicious foods and often was an event the whole family could enjoy.
In the mid-1970s, the State Championship dog sled races were held in conjunction with the Green Lake Winter Festival. As many as 1,000 people gathered to watch the 10-mile race. Most have fond memories of attending summer camps while they were growing up. On Green Lake, these summers of fun have been happening for decades. Here, girls from Camp Sandstone await a boat to take them to an overnight stay on Sugar Loaf.
A novel service to ice fishermen (and women) was offered in the late 1950s in “chuck wagon lunches. The panel truck made three trips daily to the ice shacks.
Just as today, many have enjoyed hunting throughout the years as a way to bring food to the table.
The size of the fish mattered back in the day as well as many fishermen had stories to tell after a day out on Green Lake.
In the l880s, the Winnebago Indians still made their summer home in Green Lake with 500 or so people in their camp. Pictured is Chief Highknocker, who was the last to lead this group until his death in 1911. The tribe was a peaceful one that had a good relationship with the residents of Green Lake.

Ice skating was as much of a pastime in the early 1900s as it is now on Green Lake. While skates looked very different back then and probably were not as comfortable, people of all ages enjoyed a day out on Green Lake’s frozen waters.

Birdwatching IN GREEN LAKE by Tom Schultz
For the past several years, we have been blessed to have small groups of endangered whooping cranes brought to the White River Marsh for training to follow ultralight aircraft on their migration to Florida, and now the first of these reintroduced cranes are finally old enough to start breeding, which is, of course, the ultimate goal.
Besides the opportunity to observe whooping cranes in our area, there are certainly many other exciting birds that live here or migrate through Green Lake County. As a matter of fact, nearly 300 bird species have been recorded here! Some of these birds are quite rare, but the rich and varied habitats that are found in our area provide food and shelter for a real wealth of bird life.
Photo Photo by by Tom Tom Schultz Schultz
A pair of tall and majestic white birds stood out in the marsh, loudly bugling in unison. Their strident courtship calls proclaimed their presence to any other cranes in the vicinity. This was their territory, and any others had best keep their distance. This mated pair of whooping cranes had built their nest deep in the cattails and sedges—the first of their kind to do so in Green Lake County in well over 100 years!
of these public properties it may be possible to find about 100 different types of birds during those peak months, including wetland birds such as American bittern, sora and Virginia rails, northern harriers, and marsh and sedge wrens. Forest species, such as scarlet tanagers, Baltimore orioles, ovenbirds, and wood thrushes, can also be found.
Great opportunities for birdwatching abound in our area, and one only needs to take the time to observe and learn. Three years ago a new group was formed: the Green Lake Bird and Nature Club. Monthly meetings are held between September and May at Town Square, and anyone interested in the wonderful world of nature is welcome to join us.
There are also several conservancy properties in the Green Lake area that provide trails and public access, including Sunnyside Conservancy, Winnebago Trail, Hammer’s Trail, and the Norwegian Bay Boardwalk. In the late fall, early winter, and early spring, waterbirds, such as ducks, swans, loons, and grebes, often gather on the waters of Green Lake, and the majestic bald eagle is frequently spotted along the lakeshore.
If you would like to learn more about the whooping crane population and continuing release efforts in and around Green Lake and Marquette Counties, visit operationmigration.org/InTheField. Tom Schultz is president of the Green Lake Bird and Nature Club, and a professional bird artist and illustrator.
Bird Photos by Tom Schultz
The peak months for bird activity tend to be May and June, when many species are arriving for local nesting or pausing as they migrate northward. At that time they are most noticeable on the landscape due to their bright breeding plumages, active singing, and courtship displays. Excellent birding opportunities are available at White River Marsh and Grand River Marsh, both of which are large state wildlife areas. On each visitgreenlake.com | 13

Golf
by Alyssa Paulsen With its rolling hills and beautifully manicured courses, the Green Lake area is a prime location for a day on the green. The area presents four courses perfect for golf enthusiasts young and old. Come play on any of them for a special treat to unwind after a stressful week, or even take the whole weekend to hit up all four courses. Located right in downtown Green Lake is Tuscumbia Golf Course. If you’re a history buff looking for just the right
course to perfect your swing, Tuscumbia is the place for you, as it holds the claim of being Wisconsin’s oldest golf course. A beautifully scenic course with stately oak trees and a wonderful clubhouse where you can order a delicious fish fry, a day at Tuscumbia will be filled with memories. Named Wisconsin’s Best Golf Course in 2008, Lawsonia Golf Course is located just off of the Green Lake Conference Center’s grounds. Lawsonia is actually two golf courses on one property. You can choose between the “links” course, modeled after the great golf courses of Europe, or the “woodlands” course, for the more American golf
fan. Or play them both! The scenery cannot be beat, and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife and an array of beautiful wildflowers. Mascoutin Golf Course, located just outside of Green Lake on County Highway A, is a little more challenging due to its rolling greens, and is unique because they have three 9-hole courses. To get a full round of golf in at Mascoutin, you have the choice of choosing two out of the three courses, making every golf game customizable. White Lake Golf Course is moving into its second year of new ownership and is located between Princeton and Montello. The phenomenal course also features a clubhouse with a new wraparound deck, perfect for enjoying a few cold ones in the sunshine on either side of your golf game. Green Lake is the perfect place to visit to create new memories, get a little competitive with friends, and enjoy a nice place to “stay and play.” Be sure to check out the area’s golf packages for a winning combination of playing, accommodations, and delicious dining opportunities in the Golf Pack on pages 27-30.

GOLFING: choose where to play THE GOLF COURSES OF LAWSONIA
TUSCUMBIA COUNTRY CLUB
Located on the beautiful, historic grounds of Green Lake Conference Center, Lawsonia offers 36 championship holes. The Links has a wide open Scottish look and feel with rolling fairways featuring large fairway bunkers and huge elevated greens. The Woodlands is carved out of the thick forest that borders Green Lake, featuring tree-lined fairways along with severe elevation drops.
A log clubhouse with a large rustic fireplace and charming décor accommodates outing arrangements, dinner parties, banquets, and meetings. Other amenities include motorized carts, 9th-hole snack shop, driving range, practice green, fully stocked pro shop, club repairs, and storage and locker rooms.
Voted 2008 Wisconsin Golf Course of the Year, ranked #2 public course in State “Links” by Golfweek, and consistently ranked in the top 100 golf courses in the country, Lawsonia is one of Wisconsin’s best golf destinations.
Langford’s Pub is open daily at 6:00 a.m. for breakfast, lunch, and appetizers. Stop by for the famous Friday Night Fish Fry. Langford’s is open through September. The clubhouse has men and women’s golf apparel, and offers club fitting, bag storage, and personal or group lessons. All golf carts have a Laser Link.
MASCOUTIN GOLF CLUB
Located just south of Berlin, Larry Packard carved out a magnificent 18-hole golf course through century-old trees in 1975. Giant undulating greens test your putting, sand traps galore wait to swallow an errant shot, and water hazards come into play on the final four holes. With bent-grass fairways and superb conditioning, the layout appeals to golfers of all abilities. In 1999, Mascoutin opened a new mystifying nine, designed by Rick Jacobson. The “Blue” nine features waste bunkering, elevation changes, forced natural hazard carries, river views, water hazards, and a “cliff” hole, making it a spectacular golfing experience. With a championship practice facility and 27 holes of championship golf, Mascoutin is “Wisconsin’s Best Kept Secret,” located six miles north of Green Lake. Come on out to Mascoutin and play where the championships are played!

Tuscumbia is the oldest golf course in Wisconsin, bearing the slogan “Where History Lingers on Every Green.” Tuscumbia’s public 18-hole, 6,301-yard, par-71 layout is one of the best manicured courses in the state. Tuscumbia provides a park-like setting of majestic evergreens and century-old hardwoods, thick rough, tight fairways, and a rolling landscape.
Tuscumbia promises to be one of the most memorable rounds you’ll ever play, whether you’re a novice or seasoned professional.
WHITE LAKE GOLF RESORT
This challenging 18-hole golf course is carved out of ancient glacier-formed land with an unusual western style apparent by exquisite, natural landscaping and hilltop scenic views of rolling terrain, vast woods, sloped greens, free-roaming peacocks, and spring-fed ponds. The par-72 layout sprawls over 200+ acres of natural paradise and encompasses two separate circles of nine holes, which provide significant elevation changes. The course’s newest nine has more than a dozen pond barriers, traps, trees, and wooded areas. The 15th hole has a trap-protected dogleg left, fairway pond, and a treeburied green. Clubhouse amenities include a pro shop, practice green, bar, and sandwich shop. An adjoining multirecreational vacation resort is surrounded by 35 modern and rustic rental units, a supper club and lounge, and a crystal-clear lake with a sandy, white beach. Just minutes from Green Lake, between Montello and Princeton, off Highway 23.

by Alyssa Paulsen Green Lake definitely has much natural beauty to share with everyone, which also makes it the perfect place for artists of all mediums to explore their
true talents. Green Lake is a destination with plentiful opportunities to discover handcrafted goods and fine art. Not only that, but often times you can actually meet and talk to the artist whose work you are admiring. With gallery nights at Town Square, visitors have the chance to start their weekend off by visiting with artists and friends. You can check out the
gallery for the latest in local art and check out the stores inside of our historic courthouse for more wonderful handmade products to spruce up your home. While the historic Thrasher Opera House has musical artists most weekends, visitors also have the opportunity to view remarkable works of art in its lobby gallery. From photography to

Wallenfang’s of Green Lake is not only a true staple of our community, but also has an upstairs gallery filled with beautiful artwork and woodwork contributed by the family. It’s a one stop shop for delicious treats and beautifully created and cultivated items that would make a great gift for any family member or friend. Delving into Green Lake’s rich artistic background, each August Playground Park becomes a wonderland of vibrant colors and excitement as the venue of the two-day Green Lake Fine Art
Fair comes to life. With a multitude of wonderfully talented artists, the fair provides visitors the opportunity to enjoy a nice walk lakeside while perusing everything from paintings to world-class glass artists. Last but not least is Harvest Fest, the best fall festival around. Over 100 crafters set up booths throughout downtown to sell their handmade goods, but that’s not all. There’s a farmer’s market filled with bountiful produce and other food products from local farmers, food booths from our local restaurants and service groups, and fun to be had by all. Between both days of Harvest Fest, 10,000 people stop through Green Lake, and we hope that you stop in to see what it’s all about.

When you’re in Green Lake, make sure to stop by Town Square, a thriving multifaceted community center operated by the nonprofit Green Lake Renewal and located in the historic former Green Lake County Courthouse. Since 2012, Town Square has been an extremely popular hub of activity where residents and visitors work together to revitalize the community. In and around Town Square, you’ll find art programs and exhibits, health and wellness classes, resources for entrepreneurs, and people with a common passion for their community. With a full calendar year-round, Town Square is home to many festivals and community events, including the Green Lake Bird Festival and Arnold Grummer’s Midwest Paper Fest. On the last Saturday of the month, Town Square hosts a themed bingo night with tons of prizes, food and drinks, a progressive jackpot, and a few other surprises. While in town, you may want to stop by the Market at Town Square, which happens seasonally over the summer, fall, and spring. The Market at Town Square has been growing every season, offering fresh, organic, and local produce; handmade and homemade goods; made-to-order foods and drinks; live music; and entertainment for the kids. Locally known to be a safe haven for the arts, Town Square runs arts programs and exhibits all year long. As you walk 42 | 2018 green lake vacation and travel planner
town square in, you might notice the walls filled with a featured artist’s artwork. Right away, you can spot the Lester Schwartz Gallery, with a private collection of the artist’s works, and the Artist Co-Op Corner Store, which houses multiple local artists and their work. On the lower level, there are multiple artist studios where participants can engage in watercolor, sewing, stained glass, painting, figure drawing, and papermaking classes. Prominent artists, like Michael Velliquette, Betsy Dollar, and Frank Juarez, have also come to Town Square to offer workshops that share their professional techniques.
Town Square is also the go-to place for entrepreneurs who are looking to get their businesses up and running. A recent partnership with BizStarts Milwaukee has given Town Square the resources to help build your start-up from the ground up. Thinking of starting a food-related business? Tucked in a corner near the fitness center you’ll find a culinary gem known as the Green Lake Kitchens Commercial Business Incubator, central Wisconsin’s top destination for serious chefs, die-hard foodies, and aspiring foodtruck owners. With competitive rates on flexible rental spaces for offices, meetings, and events, Town Square is able to house great organizations, like the Green Lake Association, the Green Lake Conservancy, and the Freeland Foundation. Town Square is also supported by Hangers: Resale Therapy, a new shop that sells new and gently used women’s clothing and accessories for bargain prices. For more information, please visit greenlakerenewal.org or call 920.807.0008.
At Town Square, they make it easy for you to work(out) hard before you play hard. Here you can find yoga, pilates, and other exercise classes; a lovely bike garden; and you can even get a massage. Town Square is also home to Green Lake Fitness 24/7, a state-of-the-art facility with 24-hour keycard access. Whether you’re visiting or living down the street, Town Square has what you need to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Visit Ripon ripon-wi.com
Ripon is the largest community in the Green Lake area. Although not part of Green Lake County, Ripon has much to offer visitors. For history buffs, not only does Ripon have the Little White Schoolhouse, the birthplace of the Republican Party, but it also presents a downtown bustling with historic buildings, a residential area dotted with eye-catching Victorian houses, the first Marcus Theater founded, and the oldest historical society in Wisconsin. The small city features Ripon College, a nationally recognized, private liberal
arts and sciences school with an undergrad enrollment of less than 1,000 students. Don’t let its small size fool you though; the college is always lively and bursting at the seams with brilliant students doing great things, performances, renowned speakers, and so much more. With all the aforementioned attractions and events a plenty—such as the Friday Night Summer Concert series, Cookie Daze, Septemberfest, events by the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter, and the beloved Dickens of a Christmas— there is no shortage of activity in Ripon!
