welcome to the good life
Welcome to Green Lake by Alyssa Paulsen Your vacation getaway is closer than you think. Only a couple hours from the hustle and bustle of larger cities, such as Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago. Green Lake is the perfect spot to unwind for a weekend or even longer. The Green Lake area features something for the whole family. You can spend your days on Wisconsin’s deepest natural inland lake swimming, jet skiing, waterskiing, sailing, tubing, fishing, or just enjoying a drink with friends. Park your boat at the wharf and head into town, where you can enjoy a delicious meal at any one of the local eateries. 8 | 2019 green lake vacation and travel planner
Maybe shopping is more your style. With a number of quaint little shops in downtown Green Lake or nearby Ripon, Princeton, Berlin, or Markesan, you’re sure to find the perfect gift for that special someone, indulge in fine chocolates or fudge, enjoy a nice hot cup of coffee, pair just the right scarf with your top, or even find quality artwork for your home or yard. Art, music, and theater are still alive and well in Green Lake with free music in the park all summer long, a night out at the historic Thrasher Opera House, an abundance of craft fairs and farmer’s markets, and galleries featuring masterpieces of local talents.
While it’s always amazing to have a vacation that is action packed and a cultural experience, be sure to also find time to relax. Enjoy a day at the spa with friends. Put your feet up by a roaring campfire or have a picnic in the park. All of this and more, including golf, Amish country, winery and brewery tours, and opportunities to learn more about the area’s history. Whatever your niche, you can always find it with a short drive to Green Lake! Alyssa Paulsen is a freelance writer.

by Elizabeth Popilek
920.294.6480. It’s a tour you won’t want to miss!
Hammer's Trail
Easy to moderate with a few hills. Located at the Green Lake Conference Center is a moderate .5-mile loop offering five bridges over several creeks and springs. These waters flow into Assembly Creek, which flows into Norwegian Bay. Throughout the trail, you'll experience the beauty and natural habitat of the Green Lake shoreline.
Easy and flat, consisting of mostly boardwalk. A .6-mile trail. You'II find endless wildlife because of the wetlands and the adjacent bay, which provides a vital spawn area for fish. You’ll also find beautiful song birds, osprey nesting, and the many amphibians that call this home. Get out today and see what wildlife you can find.
Mitchell Glen
Sunnyside Conservancy
Consists partly of a long, steep stairway and stepping stones connecting stream to boardwalk. Home of waterfalls, a hiking trail through a steep-sided timbered gorge, and a boardwalk, Mitchell Glen offers an experience like no other! Private guided tours are given twice a year in spring and fall. Contact Green Lake Association Office at greenlakeassociation.com | 12 | 2019 green lake vacation and travel planner
Norwegian Bay Wetlands
Easy on mostly level terrain. More than a mile of shoreline during the 1.5-mile trail, along with wooded and grassland areas.
Winnebago Trail Conservancy
Moderate with some slopes, switchbacks, and occasional steps. The Winnebago Trail, a former Native
American trail, is connected to the Green Lake Conference Center. In this moderate .9-mile trail, you'll be able to see the majestic southern oak forest and beautiful shoreline. ser vancy Youth Camps : Tichora n o C e Summer 2018 Green Lak by Lindsie Wallenfang We were happier than a bumblebee guzzling nectar from a native wildflower in the summer sunshine when we were able to facilitate two more Conservancy Camps during the summer of 2018. What adventures were had! Set in a truly enchanting location, camps were four days/three nights long for youth between the ages of 6 to 12. Without hesitation, nature lent us her magic as we carried out our mission of reconnecting our campers to it. For anyone who has experienced tent camping in a wooded area near a body of water with good company and good food cooked over a campfire, there’s nothing quite like it. Somehow, this type of experience seems to always stick out among people’s collection of fond memories as they look back on their lives. Fishing, kayaking, biking, hiking, watching wildlife or the stars or
14 | 2019 green lake vacation and travel planner
thunderheads in the distance, visiting a sustainable farm where dinner is coming from, and searching for monarch caterpillars and other mysterious insects to inspect: these types of experiences with a group of friends are things our campers will look back on for the rest of their lives. At Conservancy Camp, we create these kinds of experiences on and near Big Green Lake so that our campers leave with loads of memories and a happy connection to the lake and the area around it. Why? Because without these kinds of opportunities to become connected to Green Lake in meaningful ways, how will they become inspired to act on behalf of it and not carelessly against it? If we want to enjoy it later, don’t we need to take care of it now? Aldo Leopold’s idea of land ethic comes to the surface—our moral responsibility as humans to the natural world. At the heart of Leopold’s writings of land ethic,
“the core is simply caring; about people, about land, and about strengthening the relationships between them.” And that’s exactly what we do at camp. Summer 2018 also brought us a new gem to behold in protected perpetuity, a piece of land known previously as the home of Camp Grow. While we never like to see a youth camp go away, we are moved that this rare piece of land between lakes, now referred to as Tichora, is protected and will stay safe and secure forevermore.
No Time to Be Sick Emergency and urgent care services 24/7.
845 Parkside Street, Ripon
We visited Tichora by land and by water during our summer youth camps and were in awe of its serenity. We’ll certainly be back to visit during future camps and are forever grateful to visit and learn from these special places, born of stewardship, while passing along the notion to the next generation. Infinite praises are in order to the Green Lake Conservancy board members for their dedication to their community and protecting its special places, to our partners in conservation at the Green Lake Sanitary District, and all who came together and donated to help preserve Tichora. Lastly, a special shout-out to our camp counselors. Their leadership-in-action as role models for our campers is invaluable and inspiring! We are so proud of both our camp counselors and our campers! YOU GUYS ARE MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE! Cheers and camp/ hike/paddle on! Lindsie Wallenfang has been a Green Lake Conservancy board member since 2015 and is a Conservancy Camp Director. GOLFING: choose where to play THE GOLF COURSES OF LAWSONIA
TUSCUMBIA COUNTRY CLUB
Located on the beautiful, historic grounds of Green Lake Conference Center, Lawsonia offers 36 championship holes. The Links has a wide open Scottish look and feel with rolling fairways featuring large fairway bunkers and huge elevated greens. The Woodlands is carved out of the thick forest that borders Green Lake, featuring tree-lined fairways along with severe elevation drops.
A log clubhouse with a large rustic fireplace and charming décor accommodates outing arrangements, dinner parties, banquets, and meetings. Other amenities include motorized carts, 9th-hole snack shop, driving range, practice green, fully stocked pro shop, club repairs, and storage and locker rooms.
Voted 2008 Wisconsin Golf Course of the Year, ranked #2 public course in State “Links” by Golfweek, and consistently ranked in the top 100 golf courses in the country, Lawsonia is one of Wisconsin’s best golf destinations.
Langford’s Pub is open daily at 6:00 a.m. for breakfast, lunch, and appetizers. Stop by for the famous Friday Night Fish Fry. Langford’s is open through September. The clubhouse has men and women’s golf apparel, and offers club fitting, bag storage, and personal or group lessons. All golf carts have a Laser Link.
MASCOUTIN GOLF CLUB
Located just south of Berlin, Larry Packard carved out a magnificent 18-hole golf course through century-old trees in 1975. Giant undulating greens test your putting, sand traps galore wait to swallow an errant shot, and water hazards come into play on the final four holes. With bent-grass fairways and superb conditioning, the layout appeals to golfers of all abilities. In 1999, Mascoutin opened a new mystifying nine, designed by Rick Jacobson. The “Blue” nine features waste bunkering, elevation changes, forced natural hazard carries, river views, water hazards, and a “cliff” hole, making it a spectacular golfing experience. With a championship practice facility and 27 holes of championship golf, Mascoutin is “Wisconsin’s Best Kept Secret,” located six miles north of Green Lake. Come on out to Mascoutin and play where the championships are played!

Tuscumbia is the oldest golf course in Wisconsin, bearing the slogan “Where History Lingers on Every Green.” Tuscumbia’s public 18-hole, 6,301-yard, par-71 layout is one of the best manicured courses in the state. Tuscumbia provides a park-like setting of majestic evergreens and century-old hardwoods, thick rough, tight fairways, and a rolling landscape.
Tuscumbia promises to be one of the most memorable rounds you’ll ever play, whether you’re a novice or seasoned professional.
SONDALLES WHITE LAKE GOLF
This challenging 18-hole golf course is carved out of ancient glacier-formed land with an unusual western style apparent by exquisite, natural landscaping and hilltop scenic views of rolling terrain, vast woods, sloped greens, free-roaming peacocks, and spring-fed ponds. The par-72 layout sprawls over 200+ acres of natural paradise and encompasses two separate circles of nine holes, which provide significant elevation changes. The course’s newest nine has more than a dozen pond barriers, traps, trees, and wooded areas. The 15th hole has a trap-protected dogleg left, fairway pond, and a treeburied green. Clubhouse amenities include a pro shop, practice green, bar, and sandwich shop. Just minutes from Green Lake, between Montello and Princeton, off Highway 23.

Green Lake is a hidden gem filled with art, music, film, and theater, and so much of it is provided by talented locals, including acclaimed musicians, actors, artists, and students.
Music
The historical Thrasher Opera House, located downtown, always features world-renowned musicians ready to stun you with their abilities to perform a wide variety of genres.
Taking advantage of the beautiful venues Green Lake has to offer, the Green Lake Festival of Music is a free summer series highlighting brilliant composers and musicians from around the world, as well as students at the Green Lake Chamber Music Camp. Art
Art is at the heart of Green Lake with displays from local and area artists located at Caestecker Public Library, Town Square, the Harvest Fest art and craft fair, Thrasher Opera House art gallery, downtown shops, and even the school district. While art can be found everywhere in Green Lake, none showcase it quite as predominately as the annual Green Lake Fine Arts Show, a two-day juried show in picturesque Playground Park in mid-August.
Theater & Film
Although small in size, Green Lake has no shortage of stage performances. From Thrasher Opera House’s longstanding partnership with the Missoula Children’s Theatre to the Green Lake School District’s annual
musicals and plays, there’s something for everyone. Film has also come to the Green Lake area recently as the international organization Freeland opened its U.S. headquarters here. In 2018, Freeland held its first film festival in downtown Green Lake with over 900 film entries submitted featuring topics ranging from conservation, nature, and wildlife to stories from many cultures.
