Approximately 1 acre, this property is located in the City of Green Lake. A portion of the land was restored to native oak savanna, the dominant vegetation community of the Green Lake region prior to European settlement.
PRAIRIES
PUBLIC ACCESS OFF COUNTY ROAD FF
These two adjacent proprieties consist of restored tallgrass prairie with some riparian forest along Silver Creek. The native grassland buffer filters and absorbs surface water runoff before it enters Green Lake’s main tributary.
This 40-acre parcel of undeveloped land is located along Green Lake’s unspoiled south shore in Dickinson Bay. It also borders Spring Lake to create a riparian habitat for a large diversity of wildlife. An exceptionally scenic property with sandstone cliffs, shallow caves, and towering trees, Tichora features hiking, snowshoeing, and other allowable uses.
11 WICK NATURE PRESERVE PARK OFF WICK ROAD
Protects 3.2 acres of southern oak forest and wetlands that store and filter surface water runoff before it drains into Green Lake. Intensive effort has been undertaken to remove invasive buckthorn and establish plantings of native vegetation.

TRAIL
ALONG SILVER CREEK INLET, PARKING AVAILABLE OFF LAKEVIEW DRIVE
Located in Highknocker Park, take a leisurely walk through the trail and enjoy its beautiful surroundings as your time permits. This space includes playground equipment in a quiet and out-of-the-way city park.
PUBLIC ACCESS IS LIMITED TO TWO GUIDED TOURS ANNUALLY
This spectacular site was formed 12,000 years ago, when postglacial meltwater eroded the sandstone bedrock, resulting in a steep-sided and timbered gorge. The unique geological formations and spring-fed stream are part of a highquality corridor that supports outstanding biodiversity. An experience like no other, it’s a tour you won’t want to miss out on!

GET ON
your bikes and ride!
G
et on your bikes and ride! Wisconsin has regularly been ranked one of the top states for cyclists, and Green Lake shows visitors why. Explore the area by bike on miles of paved trails and casual rides around the lake, or participate in the annual Green Lake Bike 100 event, held early summer.
OFF-ROAD ADVENTURE CERESCO PRAIRIE MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL 2.5 MILES, SINGLE-TRACK, SWITCHBACKS + HILLS Parking behind Willmore Center at 400 Union Street, Ripon. Ripon College provides the thrill of jumps and switchbacks along with a couple of nice climbs for the off-road adventure seekers. The trail is built on the side of a hill and winds through hardwoods and tall prairie grasses. The trail is open to fat-tire cycling during the winter. Off-road cyclists can also utilize the Guskey Miller Prairie Trail and the Sunnyside Conservancy Trail for off-road cycling in every season.
MOST POPULAR LOOP THE LAKE 23 MILES, HILLS, SOME HEAVY TRAFFIC Recommend to start and stop in the downtown area of Green Lake. There is a reason this route is the most popular bike route in this part of the state. Green Lake is the deepest and fifth largest natural lake in the state. Most of the route has beautiful views of the lake, but at times you can only catch a glimpse. The lake is surrounded by a hardwood forest punctuated in places with tall stands of white pine. Many of the most beautiful homes on the lake are tucked back into that forest. A grassy gravel path allows cyclists to connect between Oakwood Avenue and Oakwood Beach Road. Hop off your bike here to explore the shaded trails that lead to Spring Lake or to Sliding Rock, where parts of the sandstone cliffs are “sliding” into Green Lake. BIRDERS PARADISE MASCOUTIN VALLEY STATE PARK TRAIL 11 MILES, GRAVEL, FLAT Parking at the shelter on Locust Street off County Road E just north of Ripon or a gravel lot on the south side of Berlin across from the feed mill. This trail is publicly accessible in our community and is approximately 11 miles in length (Berlin to Ripon) stretching along the old Milwaukee railroad bed. The base consists of crushed limestone and grass, and the corridor is mostly shaded in the summer. It is a birders paradise. It passes along or through several state protected wildlife areas and wetlands. Rush Lake is the largest prairie-pothole east of the Mississippi and a vital waterfowl habitat. The trail also crosses Koro Prairie and the Berlin Fen State Natural Area.
WINNING WOODS NORTHWESTERN TRAIL 2.5 MILES, GRAVEL, FLAT Parking along the shoulder of County Road PP just north of Highway 23 or at the Ripon Public Library, 120 Jefferson Street. This shaded old railroad bed passes a sand pit left by the glaciers and takes bicyclists into Ripon's historic downtown. From the Library, go a short block south on Pacific Street then west one block on Jackson Street. Turn onto Watson Street and pass Marcus' first cinema. It still shows firstrun movies in a classic theater setting. The rest of Watson Street is a goldmine of boutique shops and restaurants.
ESCAPE THE CITY FOREST RIDGE LOOP 19 MILES, PAVED, DIFFICULT Park at Town Square Trailhead and head east out of the city on South Street. This route covers the rolling limestone hills sculpted by glaciers. The trailhead for the Mascoutin Trail will be on your left across from the feed mill. The large Mascoutin Village that Marquette and Joliet visited while exploring the Fox River in 1673 is near here, but has never been found. EASY DOES IT LAUREE’S TRAIL WEST 3.2 MILES TOTAL, PAVED, EASY Parking at Town Square Trailhead, or inside the Conference Center Grounds.
LOCATED ON WATER STREET AT TOWN SQUARE COMMUNITY CENTER
LAUREE’S TRAIL EAST 3 MILES, PAVED, EASY Parking at Green Lake Fortifi Bank at N6230 Highway 49, Green Lake. The Town Square Trailhead offers ample parking, restrooms, a bicycle repair station, kiosk with maps, and a bike rack. These two trails are easy, paved multi-use paths connecting the Green Lake Conference Center to downtown Green Lake (west) and the newly paved trail connects you to the Northwestern Trail heading into Ripon (east).

Tips for Green Lake: - Rocky shorelines in Woods Bay, Indian Point, Sugarloaf, and inlet areas will hold early spring walleye. Small jigs tipped with fathead minnows work the best at this time. Focus on areas containing broken rock or in areas with developing weeds. - Lake trout can be caught in deep water during winter. Water from 50 to 225 feet will all produce trout. Cut bait should be used on tip-ups. Ciscos are the best bait, but chubs also will produce. Use the freshest bait for the best results. Place the bait near the bottom. - When temperatures begin to rise in late winter, white bass can be caught through the ice. The southeast corner, near Pilgrim Road, of the lake is a good place to look for late winter white bass. Use flashers to locate schools in 25 to 50 feet of water. Work Swedish Pimples at or above the schools of bass. - The northeast corner of the lake, around Dartford Bay and Sunset Park, produce the best winter northern pike catches. Look for areas of vegetation. Medium to large

some nice walleye early and late in the day. Try drifting slip bobber rigs tipped with live bait along the rocks.
- In spring, smallmouth will move into shallow areas with a gravel or sand bottom to spawn. At this time, spinners, tube baits, and crankbaits are effective. A perch-colored Husky Jerk is a good bait to try. On calm days, small topwater baits, such as a Skitter Pop, will trigger strikes.
- Beds provide spawning grounds for crappie and bluegill in late spring. Large northern pike and bass are also found along the edges.
Tips for Lake Puckaway: - Upstream migrations during spring by spawning northern pike and walleye are common in the river inlets. These areas can provide superb post-spawn fishing action. A 0.25 oz. jighead tipped with a minnow is the most effective bait. - Largemouth bass are available in both good numbers and size. Fishing the "slop" bays with weedless baits is very effective. During cold fronts, try casting along the rocky shores of the dredge banks with crankbaits or spinners. - The rocky shoreline along the dredge banks produces

- Shallow-running crankbaits can provide excellent spring northern pike action along the warmer waters of the north shore. Crappie and perch can also be found in good numbers here. Look to the inside turns for the most action.

LICENSE?
A fishing license is required in Wisconsin for anyone 16 or older. You can pick one up at any local bait shop or hardware store. Fishing regulations, including minimum lengths, bag limits, and more, vary by lake. For more information, go to dnr.wi.gov.
If you are serious about hooking up, hiring a guide can really pay off. Their knowledge of the area and conditions can mean the difference between going home empty or going home with enough for a fish fry.

GOLFING: choose where to play THE GOLF COURSES OF LAWSONIA
TUSCUMBIA COUNTRY CLUB
Located on the beautiful, historic grounds of Green Lake Conference Center, Lawsonia offers 36 championship holes. The Links has a wide-open Scottish look and feel with rolling fairways featuring large fairway bunkers and huge elevated greens. The Woodlands is carved out of the thick forest that borders Green Lake, featuring tree-lined fairways along with severe elevation drops.
A log clubhouse with a large rustic fireplace and charming décor accommodates outing arrangements, dinner parties, banquets, and meetings. Other amenities include motorized carts, 9th-hole snack shop, driving range, practice green, fully stocked pro shop, club repairs, and storage and locker rooms.
Voted 2008 Wisconsin Golf Course of the Year, ranked #2 public course in State “Links” by Golfweek, and consistently ranked in the top 100 golf courses in the country, Lawsonia is one of Wisconsin’s best golf destinations.
Langford’s Pub is open daily at 6:00 a.m. for breakfast, lunch, and appetizers. Stop by for the famous Friday Night Fish Fry. Langford’s is open through September. The clubhouse has men and women’s golf apparel and offers club fitting, bag storage, and personal or group lessons. All golf carts have a Laser Link.
MASCOUTIN GOLF CLUB
Located just south of Berlin, Larry Packard carved out a magnificent 18-hole golf course through century-old trees in 1975. Giant undulating greens test your putting, sand traps galore wait to swallow an errant shot, and water hazards come into play on the final four holes. With bent-grass fairways and superb conditioning, the layout appeals to golfers of all abilities. In 1999, Mascoutin opened a new mystifying nine, designed by Rick Jacobson. The “Blue” nine features waste bunkering, elevation changes, forced natural hazard carries, river views, water hazards, and a “cliff” hole, making it a spectacular golfing experience. With a championship practice facility and 27 holes of championship golf, Mascoutin is “Wisconsin’s Best Kept Secret,” located six miles north of Green Lake. Come on out to Mascoutin and play where the championships are played!

Tuscumbia is the oldest golf course in Wisconsin, bearing the slogan “Where History Lingers on Every Green.” Tuscumbia’s public 18-hole, 6,301-yard, par-71 layout is one of the best manicured courses in the state. Tuscumbia provides a park-like setting of majestic evergreens and century-old hardwoods, thick rough, tight fairways, and a rolling landscape.
Tuscumbia promises to be one of the most memorable rounds you’ll ever play, whether you’re a novice or seasoned professional.
SONDALLES WHITELAKE GOLF
This challenging 18-hole golf course is carved out of ancient glacier-formed land with an unusual western style apparent by exquisite, natural landscaping and hilltop scenic views of rolling terrain, vast woods, sloped greens, free-roaming peacocks, and spring-fed ponds. The par-72 layout sprawls over 200+ acres of natural paradise and encompasses two separate circles of nine holes, which provide significant elevation changes. The course’s newest nine has more than a dozen pond barriers, traps, trees, and wooded areas. The 15th hole has a trap-protected dogleg left, fairway pond, and a treeburied green. Clubhouse amenities include a pro shop, practice green, bar, and sandwich shop. Just minutes from Green Lake, between Montello and Princeton, off Highway 23.

SPRING
TRAILS: When the weather
starts getting warmer, it’s time to get out and explore! There are countless miles of paved, multi-use trails looping through the Green Lake area. Spring is the perfect time to walk, run, or bike them. The Green Lake Conference Center offers ever-changing scenery, from wooded sections along the lake to the Norwegian Bay Wetlands boardwalk, which stretches to the lakefront. BIRDING: Over 285 bird species make their home in Green Lake and another 128 migrate through the county each year! Spring is the perfect time to see migratory species and all the birds in their breeding best. Sunnyside Conservancy has over two miles of nature trails to explore as well as identification guides to some of the species you might spot in the area.
FOUR
SUMMER
BEACHES: Hattie Sherwood
Beach and Dodge County Memorial Park are two great options to dig your toes into the sand during those beautiful summer months on the lake. Cool off with a fresh dip into the water or wade in the sand.
SURFS UP: There’s no feeling like throwing the rope and surfing, and you can do just that on big Green Lake. Grab a life jacket and your board and jump in the water. Wake surfing is a low-impact sport where you surf the wake of a boat while traveling ten miles per hour in Wisconsin’s deepest and cleanest lake.
seasonguide
Green Lake is truly a four-season destination with events, activities, and even outdoor fun to be had all year long. From bundling up in December to swimsuit season in July, we have a few ideas to help get you outdoors in all kinds of weather.
FALL
GOLF: Fall is one of the best
times to hit the links in the area! If you’re planning a golf getaway, Green Lake is the ideal place to start—we’re within an hour of nationally ranked public courses, and our four local courses range from par 3s for beginners to tournament level. Choose from 99 holes of challenging resortstyle golf. Unlimited play is offered upon availability. AMISH COUNTRY TOUR: Experience Amish Country firsthand by visiting shops and roadside stands in the Green Lake area. These places provide a great chance to interact with a culture that otherwise keeps a distance from the outside world. Because the Amish don’t seek attention, you generally won’t find listings for their businesses – especially not online. See our detailed map on page 43 for driving directions.
WINTER
SKATING: Located in the
south side of downtown Green Lake at Deacon Mills Park wharf, ice skating is a popular spot for families and couples to come skate beneath downtown’s twinkling holiday lights. Includes a warming hut that houses plenty of free skates to borrow if you don’t already have a pair. ICE FISH: Anglers will be happy to learn ice fishing is popular here in the winter months. Although the spot you select will depend upon the type of fish you’re hoping to snag, we recommend scheduling a guided service to enjoy hooking that trophy fish in a comfortable heated ice shed with all the best equipment. visitgreenlake.com | 37
WINTER BY
the lake
G
reen Lake is a place where winter is embraced, and there’s a running list of reasons why you will want to bundle up to appreciate the season. An ice rink on the southern end of downtown is a popular spot for families and couples to skate beneath the twinkling lights. The rink has plenty of free skates to borrow and there’s a warming shelter for a comfortable break.
The area features over 150 miles of interconnected, wellgroomed snowmobiling trails, where it’s not uncommon to encounter deer, wild turkey, bald eagles, and other wonderful birds. You may even be lucky enough to spot a snowy owl. And if you cross paths with one of the five local snowmobiling clubs, you’ll receive a kind welcome.
If you prefer to keep your boots on the ground, head to Zobel Park for an exhilarating sled or tube ride down the hill. We are fortunate to have winters that are long enough to enjoy. You can explore your favorite outdoor attractions with a pair of snowshoes, cross-country skis, or a fat-tire bike, or enjoy a lower-impact walk in the winter landscape. Green Lake is one of the best places to see ice boating in action each winter. These machines are capable of hitting top speeds anywhere between 90 and 140 miles per hour. Once the ice covers the lake, you can move farther out for deeper-water ice fishing and search for lake trout, muskellunge, panfish, cisco, white bass, and catfish. 38 | 2021 green lake wisconsin official map + travel guide

FOUR LOCAL
daytrips RIPON
ripon-wi.com
920.295.3877
13 minutes
PROUD HISTORY Now a museum, the Little White Schoolhouse, birthplace of the first Republican Party and site of their meeting, is a simple frame schoolhouse built in 1853. In the Little White Schoolhouse, a decision made by a small group of Ripon citizens changed the course of our nation’s history. The downtown is bustling with historic buildings, a residential area dotted with eye-catching Victorian houses, the first Marcus Theatre founded, and the oldest historical society in Wisconsin.
GASTRO EXPERIENCE Make sure to check out the Mascoutin Valley Craft Beverage Trail while in the area. Along the trail, you’ll experience the diversity of craft wines, beers, ciders, meads, and spirits. These businesses create a variety of products using quality local ingredients combined with the love of offering sustainable and enjoyable craft beverages. Head on over to mascoutinvalleycraftbeveragetrail.com for more info. SIGNATURE EVENTS There’s no shortage of activity in Ripon. Friday Night Summer Concert Series fills the Village Green with a wide range of musical genres and is free to the public. Septemberfest celebrates the fall season and has something for everyone, including live entertainment throughout the day. And we can’t forget about the beloved Dickens of a Christmas, which comes alive in December and features people acting out different scenes in the windows of shops alongside countless other holiday activities throughout the weekend.
COLLEGE TOWN The city features Ripon College, a nationally recognized, private liberal arts and sciences school. Don’t let the small size fool you; the college is always lively and bursting at the seams with brilliant students, masterful performances, renowned speakers, and so much more.

The Shops on Water Street offers small-town shopping with some of the finest urban flair goods in the state. Delight in the atmosphere as you stroll through shops restored to their 1800s origin, log-built from native pines, or repurposed in their own unique style.

WORLD FAMOUS Make sure to visit Princeton’s famous Flea Market, held outdoors from April to October. It’s the largest of its kind in the state and full of treasures homemade, antiqued, and new. AMISH COUNTRY First founded in 1977, the Amish community near Dalton and Kingston is one of the younger Amish communities in the state, but has quickly become the largest Amish settlement in Wisconsin. You’ll find no shortage of Amish buggies to wave at as you travel between bakeries, greenhouses, furniture stores, cheese shops, and more. ENDLESS OUTDOORS Acres upon acres of lakes to drop in a fishing line on Little Green Lake and birding, hiking, and exploring the Grand River Marsh Wildlife Area are just the start to a great outdoor adventure in the Markesan area. STEP BACK IN TIME Offering its guests the opportunity to step back in time, the Grand River Valley Museum & Train Depot is the spot to head to. Collecting, archiving, and sharing the area’s more than 150-year history since 1991, the museum houses the largest and, unarguably, the best collection of the area artifacts in four separate buildings, covering more than 12,000 square feet.
BERLIN BEAT THE HEAT The Berlin Aquatic Center is the prime location to cool off on a hot summer day. Complete with a giant waterslide, zero-depth entry areas, and a fun kiddie area, it makes a great destination for people of all ages to visit and spend a fun-filled afternoon. They also host multiple specialty programs, including Early Bird Swim Monday, Adult Lunch Laps, and Sunset Swims.
