BIKE ROUTE TO CITY OF GREEN LAKE

Points of Interest City of Green Lake

Ripon

In 1837, Anson Dart discovered the beauty of Green Lake. In 1840, he returned to build the village of Dartford, now called Green Lake. The unique qualities of the area were recognized early, and a tradition of welcoming visitors began. In 1867, the first resort west of Niagara Falls, the Oakwood Hotel, was built. By the turn of the century, Green Lake was a popular resort for visitors from Chicago and points further south.

Located six miles east of Green Lake on Hwy. 23, Ripon is the birthplace of the Republican Party. Visit the Little White Schoolhouse, located at 303 Blackburn St. It is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Memorial Day to Labor Day, and weekends in May, September, and October. While in Ripon, take time to visit the many antique stores, outlets, and specialty shops.

The heritage of hospitality was created, and over a century later, fine lodging, unique shops, and friendly service are all part of that tradition. The lake and all it offers, fishing, swimming, sailing, boating, and the natural beauty of the area, provide a relaxing setting for recreation year-round.

The earliest settlement in Ripon was an experiment in communal living based on the studies of 19th century socialist philosopher Charles Fourier. Called Ceresco, it was established in 1844 and disbanded in 1851. At its most successful, the commune had 200 followers. On the west edge of town stands one of the original long houses and the post office.

For more information, contact the Green Lake Chamber of Commerce at (920) 294-3231.

The Republican Party was founded in Ripon in 1854 at a citizen meeting of Whigs, Free Soilers, and Democrats, which was called to organize against the extension of slavery. Alvan E. Bovay, a local lawyer and prominent Whig, proposed "Republican" for the name of the new party. Four months later the name Republican was adopted by the first state convention in Jackson, Michigan.

Princeton Early settlers hit it on the head when they decided to call what is now known as Princeton, Pleasant Valley. Nestled in the sweeping bends of the Fox River, Princeton and its surrounding area is a hotbed of activity throughout the year. Princeton's revitalization effort is certainly making everything that was old new again. The new Water Street shops and eateries downtown offer the unusual. From world-renowned collections to one-of-a-kind pieces, shopping along the Fox and the surrounding area is an experience not to be missed.

Ripon College, established in 1851, occupies a 250-acre campus on the highest hill in the city. A highlight of the college is C.J. Rodman Art Gallery, which features two original, lifesize Anthony Van Dyck portraits and changing art exhibits. Free guided tours of the campus can be arranged. Call (920) 748-8364.

One of the largest antiquing cities in the state, Princeton is an "Antiquers" paradise. Four large malls and many shops are full to overflowing with antiques and collectibles that will create the perfect accent in any home.

A step-on, guided tour of the city is available for motor coaches, and brochures featuring self-guided tours are also available. For more information, contact the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce at (920) 748-6764. Visit their web page at ripon-wi.com.

During the warmer months, bicycling enthusiasts can choose from over 150 miles of mapped biking routes on eight secluded back-road tours that originate in the downtown. Enjoy all kinds of water sports in surrounding lakes and rivers, from skiing and fishing to renting canoes and kayaks for a paddle down the Mecan River or the mighty Fox. When the snow flies, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling mapped trails are the things to do to enjoy the winter outdoors.

Berlin Berlin is a progressive community with a vast selection of churches, an excellent educational system, medical care facility, and recreational opportunities that are truly unique. As the Fox River runs through the center of the community, much consideration has been placed on developing the river frontage, available for all use. Having 47 acres of park land in the community is truly an asset we are proud of. Fishing and hunting is equally as important, as there are numerous public landings for river access and two large state-owned wildlife areas in Green Lake County. From Green Lake, take Hwy. 23 East to 49 North (approximately 8 miles).

Stroll with thousands of treasure hunters weekly at "Wisconsin's Largest Weekly Outdoor Flea Market." The market makes its home in Princeton's city park on Hwy. 23 every Saturday (May to October), and features over 175 booths with an array of old and new bargains alike. For more information, contact the Princeton Chamber of Commerce at (920) 295-3877.
