Adam's Rib by Rebekah Sell

If you are looking for a dining experience with homemade dishes and a friendly atmosphere, look no further than Adam’s Rib in Green Lake. A family-owned and -run business for nearly 39 years, Adam’s Rib has secured their place in the heart of Green Lake. Purchased in 1978 as a single-room bar called Spike’s, the Adams’ changed the name to Adam’s Rib in 1984 and expanded to offer a dining room in 1988. Since that time, their commitment to quality food and a comfortable atmosphere has never wavered. Dennis and Jean Adams have run the “best bar and restaurant by a dam site” together, and now include their daughter Rachel in the management of the business. Like her parents before

her, Rachel is committed to great customer service, quality food, and working with her employees so that their families come first. “Some of our servers we’ve watched growing up right here at Adam’s Rib. It’s a true family atmosphere where people say it’s like Cheers—everyone knows their name!” Some of the dishes that keep people coming back for more include their Friday night fish fry and homemade beer batter. “We carve all our own fish in the back each week,” Rachel says. “You won’t find bar food here.” Saturday nights they serve classic supper club fare—deep-fried chicken, chicken and ribs, and prime rib—without the supper club prices. Sunday dinners include a baked half-chicken, roasted half-duck,

and roast pork. Every dish is made from scratch with recipes that have earned Adam’s Rib such titles as Best Burger in Town (2013), Best Dining on a Budget (2016), and Best American Cuisine (2015). Some of their more unique dishes include Beef Rouladen and spare ribs with sauerkraut. Their soups are homemade as well. 536 Mill Street | Green Lake www.keipehotel.com | 920-294-6484
When people aren’t stopping in for food or a drink with friends, Adam’s Rib is also a favorite spot for local clubs and organizations to meet. Snowmobile club, cribbage club, and others are some of the frequent visitors to the dining room. Adam’s Rib hosts rehearsal dinners as well. When the family and staff aren’t serving hearty lunches and dinners, they are giving back to the Green Lake community through donations and events with the chamber of commerce, which is next door, and setting up booths at some of the many special occasions occurring in Green Lake.

Adam’s Rib is located at 538 Mill Street, across from the Green Lake Dam. They serve lunch every day, except Sunday, and dinner every day, except Monday. While the kitchen is closed from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. daily, you can pop in anytime for a cool drink and casual conversation. It’s not easy keeping a food service business running for over 38 years straight, yet it’s clear the Adams are committed to the community they now think of as family. Festival of Music Artistic Director Tom Rosenberg coaching Chamber Music Camp students
Summer in Green Lake means many things. For the Green Lake Festival of Music, celebrating its 38th season, it means: • Hosting world-class musicians for our summer Concert Series. • The two-week Chamber Music Camp at Green Lake Conference Center featuring 30+ talented young string and piano students from around the country. • The four-day Choral Institute at Ripon College for people who love to sing. • The Thomas E. Caestecker Free Family Concerts. This year’s theme is Water. Water and music have some things in common, such as waves—sound waves and lake waves—as well as movement and reflection. We’re delighted to perform
Water Music on the first day of summer, June 21, on Green Lake’s Wednesday night Concerts in the Park at Deacon Mills Park. We’ll feature the brilliant young musicians of the Chamber Music Camp playing music inspired by water. We’ll celebrate Independence Day with music of American composers at another outdoor Concert on the Green at Ripon College outside Great Hall. Please visit GreenLakeFestival.org for details. We love to perform in the intimate, historic Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake, Ripon College’s Rodman Center for the Arts, Caestecker Public Library, and Ripon and Princeton Public Libraries. We’re so grateful for the partners and friends at these institutions. We are also enjoying renewed friendships with the Green Lake Association, founded in 1951, to conserve Green Lake and

There are a great variety of fish, including panfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, trout, walleye, and catfish. not alone. Sailing is an area highlight and skimming the waves in a sailboat is a dream come true for visitors and residents alike. Should you want classes, the Green Lake Sailing School has offered training to children and adults since 1960. Certified instructors train everyone from beginners to experienced sailors, guiding them in the rigors of adjusting the sails to glide across the lake. The Green Lake Sailing School is located at the east end of Green Lake. (920) 294-3592. greenlakesailingschool.com.

CONCERTS in the Park
by Hannah Kallio What's better than summer evenings relaxing at the lake with friends? A summer evening relaxing at the lake with friends and live music. Mark the dates for the Green Lake Concerts in the Park series on your calendar. The concerts are held Wednesday evenings starting June 14 and ending August 16. They take place on the Starlight Stage at Deacon Mills Park, and admission for the entire series is free for the whole family. Each concert starts at 6:30 p.m. and lasts about two hours. Refreshments are available in the park, with the proceeds going to support future concerts. You can also grab dinner, an ice cream cone, and other classic summer treats at several local businesses nearby. Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket, or get comfortable at one of the picnic tables or benches. Then just sit back and savor the music while the breeze blows off the lake. You may find yourself tapping your feet, singing along, or even dancing. 18 | Green Lake magazine 2017
There's something in the series for all ages and for a wide range of musical tastes. Over the course of the summer, you'll hear jazz, country, rock, polka, and more. For many concertgoers, the highlight is Family Picnic Night on July 12, featuring the University of Wisconsin–Madison Marching Band. Once you've experienced their rousing
performance, you'll understand why many families look forward to this special evening year after year. For more information or to check the concert schedule, go to visitgreenlake.com or call the Chamber at (800) 253-7354 or (920) 294-3231.

The Norton’s family business is twofold: serving anglers with their Green Lake business, Norton’s Fishing Adventures, and working with hunters on their 275-acre Princeton farm, Pheasants by the Fox.
Mike has been guiding fishermen since he was a boy and took over the family business in his late 20s. He charter fishes off a large pontoon that anyone can enjoy fishing from May 1 through October 1. Guided tours can be as small as a few people to as large as a whole group. “We get people here with their kids and families, businesses

having an outing or just a couple guys wanting a day on the lake,” says Mike. He welcomes all sorts of clients, from experienced fishermen to those who’ve never fished before. People catch lake trout, brown trout, white bass, and cisco, to name a few. Joanne is just as instrumental in keeping the anglers and hunters happy. Together, they annually raise 4,000 pheasants for Pheasants by the Fox. The birds are minimally handled to reduce stress and kept safe from predation by extensive fencing and netting. “Pheasants have such a hard time breeding in the wild,” Joanne says. “There is so much predation.” On their farm, the Nortons plant different crops to give the hunter and his dog just the right amount of challenge. Because it’s a privately operated game farm, no hunting license is required. The Nortons see a large variety of clients during their October through April hunting season—everyone from age 10 to over 90. “It’s a wonderful way for friends and family to get out and enjoy nature,” says Joanne. Their experience and passion is not only evident in the way they talk about fishing and the land, but also in how much Mike and Joanne care for the Green Lake community. Mike is active in the Green Lake Cold-Water Fishery Council. “I advocate for the average guy
who wants to go fishing. I work with people in the [Green Lake] conservancy, the Fishery Council, and those just trying to keep the water clean. It’s about the whole community.” Joanne has planted the entrance to their farm with edible herb gardens, and many of their hunting acres double as prairie restoration. Best of all, the Nortons will welcome you to their home as if you were old friends. “We have some clients that have been coming since my father was guiding,” Mike says. COOKIE DAZE by Hannah Kallio It’s a hands-on celebration with something for kids of all ages. This year's Ripon Cookie Daze festivities take place on Saturday, August 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Barlow Park, off County Road E in southern Ripon. Ripon has been called one of the "Coolest Small Towns in America," and Cookie Daze is a fabulous way to experience that with the whole family. The youngest members of the family will love having their picture taken with Cookie Monster, and can participate in the cookie hunt. For ages 3 to 12, the highlight is definitely the series of Cookie Drops, when thousands of individually wrapped Rippin’ Good Cookies are suspended high above the crowd by a fire truck crane. As the cookies drop from the sky and hit the ground, children scurry to collect as many as they can. Several of the packages are labeled prizewinner, and can be redeemed for small prizes. Each Cookie Drop also has a grand-prize winning cookie that can be redeemed for a new bike. There are several different Cookie Drops throughout the event for different age groups so everyone gets a chance to participate.
so there's always a new twist on favorite recipes along with new recipes you've never tasted before. It’s more than just cookies. There's a bounce house, a huge activity tent full of free make-and-take crafts, and a food and beverage tent with lunch available at very reasonable prices. And don't miss the rocket shop and launchpad, where you can make and launch your own rocket using recycled materials. For more information, contact the Ripon Chamber of Commerce at (920) 748-6764 or visit ripon-wi.com. Hannah Kallio is a freelance writer, speaker, and coach. Learn more at hannahkallio.org. There's also cookie decorating and a chance to sample the community cookie-baking contest entries. Each year, the contest has a different theme, greenlakemagazine.com | 25

Over the past 20 years, the Green Lake Conservancy has been building a legacy of stewardship by working to “preserve the lands that protect the lake” and promote public conscientiousness when it comes to our beloved body of water.
GREEN LAKE Conservancy
While many picturesque trails and native prairies have been established and restored by the Conservancy, the members also recognize the tremendous need to actively encourage a sense of stewardship amongst our youth. And what better way to get kids to fall in love with nature than by getting them out there and allowing Mother Nature to work her magic. In July 2016, the Conservancy piloted our first-ever youth camps for children ages 7 through 11. Two three-day/twonight camps were held at the Green Lake Conference Center campground, where we were surrounded by several of the Conservancy’s trails. In this beautiful setting, our youth campers were presented with a simple, yet powerful, opportunity to connect with nature and learn by doing. While numerous nature-based activities were scheduled for our campers, we made sure to allow the magic of summer to seep into every possible moment. We couldn’t have possibly planned for thousands of fireflies to light up the night or to spot a doe and her fawn foraging in a glowing field. We couldn’t have coordinated with the birds to sing to us on cue or for a fish to jump the moment we looked across Norwegian Bay. And while we did plan a camp session during the Full Beaver Moon,

we couldn’t have planned a cloudless night so that our awestruck campers felt compelled to howl at it. By allowing the time and space for our campers to just be in nature, nature came through and allowed us to experience all of her magic. And that magic is the seed that fosters the love and respect for lands and waters. It’s probably safe to say that people only truly care about what they feel connected Happy campers and camp staff!

to. And in a world of technology, the masses are slipping further and further away from the notion that our very lives depend on the health of our planet, much less that it is our inherent responsibility to care for it. So, by creating this opportunity to connect kids with nature, we are able to inspire environmental conscientiousness and empower the next generation as guardians of the lake, the land, and all Earth’s creatures. We are looking forward to making camp an annual tradition and welcoming an ever-growing number of youngsters to come and enjoy the wonders of nature we have right here in Green Lake. We welcome you to help us celebrate this joyous occasion for our community as we brighten our future by encouraging our youth as leaders of stewardship and sustainability. Do you know children in need of a remedy for “nature deficit disorder” (a la Richard Louv)? Contact the Green Lake Conservancy for information on future camps and how you can help make camp possible for even more children. A Poem to Inspire
From Wisconsin’s deepest inland lake Some friends and I would like to take Just a moment or two And share our mission with you ‘Cause believe it or not, you’re part of it too. We’re propelling a movement, a dance if you please, To share information and put our systems at ease. We live on a planet sustaining more than its weight. And the signs have all told us Mother Nature’s irate. Yet we’re caught in a system seeming to keep us down. It extends ‘round the world in every village and town. Our hearts say fix this, there’s a better way to live, But I’m only one person, just my two hands to give. Well fear not, dear friends! For we have a solution! A cure, it’s true, for this senseless pollution! We’ll gather outside with the wind in our hair, And we’ll share information ‘bout how to take care Not just of ourselves, both inside and out, But the planet we live on, the one forgotten about. So help us help you, and we’ll all help each other. And in turn we’ll help Nature and reconnect one another. Yes, it’s a big job, but you know what they say, Many hands make light work at the end of the day. So come stand beside us and we’ll continue this dance. After all, shouldn’t we give these children’s children a chance?

Pure Pride School District of Green Lake by Mary Allen An Environment of Excellence
TOP-QUALITY ‘IB’ EDUCATION– RIGHT HERE IN GREEN LAKE “We are unbelievably fortunate to have an International Baccalaureate school in our area. The study habits our daughter developed and the independence granted to her during these formative years will pay dividends to her throughout her life. She was pretty much able to write her own ticket when it came to choosing a university. Green Lake School District is a hidden gem.” — Jennifer, parent of a 2016 Green Lake High School graduate

For decades, people associated America’s small towns with one-room schoolhouses, and true to that image, the Green Lake School District is a one-roof schoolhouse. Proudly referred to as a public school that feels like a private school, students from four-yearold kindergarten through twelfth grade attend classes in the same building. Divided by separate wings, this convenient arrangement encourages a family-friendly community atmosphere focused on innovative education. In 2012, the Partnership for 21st Century recognized the school as one of its exemplars, a model for schools around the country. In 2014, Green Lake High School was selected to America’s Most Challenging High Schools list and ranked in the top 6 percent of Wisconsin’s high schools.
Smaller is Better Research supports that with small, personalized class sizes in the lower grades, students benefit. The Green Lake School District goes above and beyond this to provide smaller classes throughout the entire education experience. Teacher-student ratio is the lowest in the area, allowing achievement to be closely monitored and personal attention to be provided.
4K–12 International Baccalaureate World School With the challenges of a new world economy, Green Lake has chosen a progressive path. The school district is the first 4K–12 International Baccalaureate World School (IB) in Wisconsin. Green Lake High School is 30 | Green Lake magazine 2017
the state’s first all-IB high school. The school district is currently authorized to provide the Diploma Program (grades 11–12), the Middle Years Program (grades 7–10), and the Primary Years Program (grades 4K–6). These three programs combine to offer each student a well-rounded, internationally minded, and inquiry-based approach to learning. What does IB offer? IB is for every student, and provides a style of learning that encourages thoughtful understanding of what is being studied. Expectations are high, and students enjoy a challenging approach that promotes critical thinking and reflection. Students no longer need to ask, “Why do I have to learn this?” Each lesson, at all levels, is clearly defined and made relevant to the world. Starting in second grade, a second language is taught and is required until tenth grade.
Enriched and Innovative Along with quality academics, the curriculum emphasizes health and wellness, athletics, and the arts. While many districts are cutting noncore classes, Green Lake elementary students are taught by specialists in vocal music, band, art, computers, and have daily physical education. At the middle and high school level, students are very involved. Seventyfive percent of students participate in a minimum of three extracurricular activities. The philosophy is that while in middle and high school, students should have the opportunity to play a sport if they wish. The performing arts are valued, and from fifth grade on students are given the opportunity to play an instrument and become members of the band or choir. Both the performing and visual arts have excellent participation rates and outstanding community support. Hands-on learning takes place in technology education where students can learn marine technology or take preengineering courses from the Project Lead the Way program. One example of this is a team-taught project between math and technology education where the students learn math by building a boat.
Impressive Results The adage “good things come in small packages” certainly holds true. The District had a state report card rating of “Exceeds Expectations.” Green Lake High School graduates are a measure of the success of the school district—85 percent of graduates continue on to higher education. Alumni have enrolled in undergraduate and graduate work at institutions, such as the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Marquette, Amherst, Cornell, Duke, Northwestern, University of Chicago, Stanford, and Purdue to name a few. In a beautiful, serene lake environment, the Green Lake School District has distinguished itself by providing a world-class educational experience for its students. For more information, phone (920) 294-6411 or go to glsd.k12.wi.us. Mary Allen is the district superintendent.

Farrell’s
Fine Furnishings The three-story structure of Farrell’s Fine Furnishings towers above Watson Street in Ripon. Since 2001, the historic building has housed furniture and accessories that the people in the area have come to associate with distinction and quality.
Owner Troy Farrell dreamed of a furniture store that would be eclectic and fresh. After he managed his family store for two years, he took ownership in 1999 and immediately began incorporating his own personality. The ground floor of Farrell’s Fine Furnishings is full of best sellers: sofas and chairs. Scattered among the beautifully displayed living rooms are lamps, rugs, artwork, knick knacks, and room accessories. With shipments coming in up to once per week, customers can visit several times per month and always find something new, and everything is for sale. On the second floor, the mood changes with bedrooms, dining tables, chairs, and a vast array of recliners. Because most of the furniture is hand picked by Troy, there are very few duplicates.
by Rebekah Sell Finally, the third floor consists of odds and ends and clearance items. Part of the reason the furniture selection is so eclectic is that over half of what Farrell’s Fine Furniture sells is made from a custom order. Customers can page through thousands of fabric swatches to design exactly what they need for their home. “We carry furniture from Hooker, Rowe, Craftmaster, Hammary, and, most recently, Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines,” says Troy. The companies he buys from manufacture handmade furniture and some, like Craftmaster, are made in the United States. He is also committed to purchasing items made only from sustainable wood sources.

Green Lake Fine Arts Show by Hannah Kallio Heralded as one of the Midwest's most esteemed art shows, the 45th annual Green Lake Fine Arts Show takes place August 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and August 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event is held at beautiful Playground Park, and there is no admission. Discover something for every taste and budget as you stroll through the exhibit area and discuss with the artists what inspires them. Be sure to ask about the creative process, how long it takes to create each piece, and how long they've been honing their skills. There is an incredible array of fine art, craft, and gift items. You'll find a little of everything: oil paintings, sculptures, watercolors, ceramics, photography, metalwork, glass, wood, jewelry, and mixed media. The show offers a rare opportunity to purchase a one-of-a-kind work of art after personally meeting the artist who created it. The event showcases over 100 booths displaying the work of hand-picked artisans and craftspeople. Each year, over 600 artists apply to exhibit their work, but only those who meet the
rigorous selection criteria are invited to participate in the show. Organizers Ali and Mike Rossberg are following in the footsteps of their late father, Guy Rossberg, who spearheaded this event for over 30 years. They've assembled an experienced selection committee and chosen to implement a 40 percent exhibit turnover rate, ensuring a unique experience for the visitors who look forward to coming back year after year. Refreshments are available from several vendors both days of the show. There's also live music to complement the visual art on display. To complete the whole experience, the park will be in full bloom and Mill Pond will serve as the perfect backdrop for this celebration of creativity. The organization’s mission is to facilitate the development of a regional network of trails and greenways to preserve the natural beauty of the area and advocate, educate, and encourage on behalf of safe biking and walking.
routes on the region’s roads. Enjoy a beautiful day biking the quiet, scenic, rural roads for which the Green Lake area has gained a reputation for great biking experiences. The routes are filled with small farms, abundant wildlife, great birding, and opportunities to visit the small communities that make the area what it is.
In its commitment to community education, Green Lake Greenways founded, and continues to take an active role in, community projects, such as The Walking School Bus Program, Bike to School Day, Bicycle Safety Training, and Police Officers Training.
The 2017 Movin’ on the Mascoutin, ride, run, walk will start and finish at Vines & Rushes Winery on County Road E three miles north of Ripon on June 10. Movin’ is family friendly, and lunch and t-shirts will be offered as part of the event. This beautiful packed-gravel, 12-mile trail connects the communities of Berlin and Ripon.
Greenways is also leading the way in fundraising for the first-ever multiuse path in Green Lake County, but additional funds are needed. The first phase of the 10-foot-wide paved path was located in the State Highway 23 corridor, connecting the Green Lake Conference Center to the City of Green Lake. Future phases of the path project will connect the communities of Green Lake, Ripon, and Berlin. Phase one was completed in 2014. The Mascoutin Valley State Trail has been an ongoing renovation project for Greenways. The trail, located between the cities of Ripon and Berlin on a former railroad corridor, allows a variety of users to experience nature firsthand. Newly laid limestone welcomes riders and walkers to the serenity, beauty, and safety that trails can provide.

That's what Dr. Tom and his wife Linda tell themselves when they take one of their regular Saturday morning rides. They enjoy a route that leads to an Amish bakery full of fresh baked goods. The ride includes quaint towns and rural landscapes, well-known characteristics of the southern part of Green Lake County.

Developing and maintaining road routes and trails is the focus of Green Lake Greenways, an organization that advocates, educates, and encourages safe biking and walking. Green Lake Greenways developed the City of Green Lake Trail. The 10-foot-wide multiuse paved path runs alongside, but safely separated from, State Highway 23. It connects the City of Green Lake to Green Lake Conference Center, where bikers can ride along tree-lined roads and Shore Drive for beautiful views of the lake and historic houses. New routes and great rest stops are planned for Greenways’ annual Gear Up Green Lake Fundraiser Ride. Visit the Greenways website and the Gear Up Ride Facebook page for details about the event. by John Hayashi One of the great privileges available to everyone living in or visiting the Green Lake area is the opportunity to recreationally use Green Lake. For those of us who live here year-round, we sometimes forget that so many options exist. Perhaps one of the best uses of the lake is that of the sport of sailing. It can be almost a year-long opportunity to enjoy the lake in both summer and winter.

Catering to summer visitors is a natural inclination for Green Lake Sailing School. However, we also strive to expose the craft of sailing to the youth of the Green Lake community. In the last seven years, the Sailing School has hosted a sailing experience for students of the Green Lake Global and Environmental Academy, the local charter school. We are currently involved in a partnership with the Green Lake School District where we offer sailing education to students of the district’s summer school program.
For the 2017 season, we look forward to being able to offer even more instruction. We are looking to build on our nightly sailing lessons for adults. They were well attended over the last two years and we look forward to becoming the premier adult instruction program in central Wisconsin, as our large fleet of boats is accommodating to all skill levels. We offer lessons to suit every skill level, from first-time beginners to experienced sailors looking for a refresher course to children and adults. All are taught by experienced instructors. In addition to traditional multiweek sessions, we also offer mini-clinics, as well as private lessons. We now also offer the sailing experience to children ages 5 to 7 with their parent attending, as well as an introductory sailing experience for both parent and child. Sailing is often perceived as a difficult sport to participate in. Green Lake Sailing School has made a mission of dispelling that myth over the last 57 years. Whether you are a parent looking for a confidence-building experience for your children or a visitor looking for a relaxing way to get to know Green Lake, the Sailing School can help you achieve your goals, as they have with thousands of students over the last half of a century. Everyone can learn how
to sail, and it is something you will remember for a lifetime. Green Lake Sailing School is a nonprofit organization and has been teaching
people to sail on the waters of Green Lake since 1960. Green Lake Sailing School is on County Highway A at the north entrance to Sunset Park. Our facility offers easy access for sailors to learn how to sail, and our fleet of instruction boats are optimized for all ages. For more information, call (920) 229-5256 or go to greenlakesailingschool.com. Check us out on Facebook as well. John Hayashi is President of Green Lake Sailing School.

Green Lake Conference Center by Jean Cornelius Victor and Jessie Lawson founded and developed the estate now known as Green Lake Conference Center (GLCC) in the late 1800s and early 1900s as a farm. Much of their European-inspired architecture remains today. The farm became a luxurious country club in the 1920s. In 1943, Northern Baptists purchased the estate for training and conferences. Today, GLCC has 60,000 square feet of meeting space and accommodations for 1,000 in hotel rooms, suites, lakefront and forest houses, dorms, cabins, and campsites. In addition to hosting retreats, workshops, and conferences, GLCC offers programs for adults, youth,

as both hotel and clubhouse for the 18-hole Lawsonia Links Golf Course.
One of the most iconic buildings at GLCC is Roger Williams Inn. Originally named Lawsonia Country Club Hotel, it was constructed by the H.O. Stone Development Company of Chicago in 1930. Because of its prominent location on the lake, it is a landmark for both the Conference Center and the community.
The Northern Baptists renamed the hotel Roger Williams Inn after the English Protestant theologian (1603– 1683), an early proponent of religious freedom and the separation of church and state. Williams started the first Baptist church in America: First Baptist Church of Providence, RI.
The five-story hotel has lake views on three sides and the exterior is faced with brick painted white with green trim. Almost all of its 81 guest rooms face the lake, and it has a gorgeous lobby. The jewel of their development, it served
Roger Williams Inn continued to be a favorite place to stay for decades. Memories abound of hymn sings in the lobby, swimming in the outdoor pool and off the island, boat rides on the Captain Bickel, and family-style dinners in the Crystal Dining Room. Baptist leaders, such as J.L. Kraft (founder of Kraft Foods), gathered at the Inn. It was the social center and focal point of many pictures and postcards. The Inn is in the midst of a major renovation. Damaged bricks on the exterior have been replaced and repainted. Terrace walls are being repaired and rebuilt. Many guest rooms have been refurbished. The website, RogerWilliamsInn.com, features a video about the vision for a rejuvenated Inn, as well as history, old photos, and restoration plan. Renovations ensure that this classic hotel will continue to be a wonderful place to renew guests for decades to come! For more information about Green Lake Conference Center, go to glcc.org. Ready…Set… RUN! by Wendy Schultz Mark your calendars and start training for one of Wisconsin’s most scenic race routes: the Green Lake Area “13dot1” Half Marathon and 5K Fun Run. This exhilarating Labor Day weekend event will celebrate its 8th year on Sunday, September 3, and is sure to please both beginner and seasoned runners. With over 500 participants coming from many parts of the country, the excitement is obvious as runners, friends, and families make their way to the starting line, located in the heart of beautiful Green Lake near the waterfall across from the Chamber of Commerce office. With a loud air horn blast, the Half Marathon (13.1 miles) starts at 8:15 a.m. followed by the 5K Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. Crowds of enthusiastic spectators line the streets to provide plenty of cheering and cowbell action as their favorite runners head out.
Talk about eye-catching scenery! The half marathon route takes runners through the City of Green Lake and west along wooded lanes and breathtaking shoreline. A good portion of the route includes a tour through the lovely Green Lake Conference Center, with its many historic structures and extensive stone walls dating back to the Victor and Jessie Lawson era in the early 1900s. Manicured emerald-green golf courses and magnificent lake homes are part of the eye candy in this race. The 5K route (3.1 miles) also includes gorgeous views of the lakeshore. Runners/walkers head west along the lake, past Hattie Sherwood Park, and beyond before returning to the finish line at Deacon Mills Park. A free Kids Race for children ages 10 and under takes place near the finish at 10:00 a.m. Great music, food, and an awards ceremony follow. The generous sponsors and the 13dot1 committee are committed to promoting wellness in our community.
To register for the run, or to find out how you can support this effort through sponsorship or volunteering, go to greenlakehalfmarathon.com. Make it your summer goal and start training today. Wisconsin State It's not surprising that the Wisconsin State Chili Cookoff has a lot in common with a savory bowl of chili. It's not just great ingredients that count, it's how you combine those ingredients. And it takes time to get all the flavors to blend just right. Over the years, the event has grown from a few dozen people gathering to a partnership between the Green Lake Rotary Club and the International Chili Society. The Wisconsin State Chili Cookoff now attracts over 1,000 chili enthusiasts and as many as 40 chili-making teams from all over the Midwest.

After the judging, the first, second, and third place winners will be announced and a $750 cash prize will be awarded. The winning team will also be eligible to compete at the International Chili Society World Championships.

As you visit each booth, you can chat with the cooks about their secret recipe and sample the chili-themed appetizers and desserts. You'll find everything from familiar Tex-Mex favorites, like chips with homemade salsa, to unexpected delicacies, like chili dark chocolate bark. Fifty-four Riponites gathered in their Little White Schoolhouse on March 20, 1854, and formed a new antislavery party. They became the first “Republicans” in the Union. The Birthplace of the Republican Party National Historic Site, also known as the Little White Schoolhouse, is open
to the public as a museum that explains Ripon’s role in forming a major political party. What sparked their political activism was the introduction of the KansasNebraska Bill, introduced in congress in January, 1854, by Senator Stephen Douglas of Illinois. The bill threatened to extend slavery into the newly opening territories of Kansas and Nebraska, repealing the 1820 Missouri Compromise, which limited slavery's geographical reach. The Little White Schoolhouse was named a National Historic Landmark in 1974 in recognition of its “national significance in commemorating the history of the United States of America.” From 2005 to 2007, the building underwent a complete restoration in accordance with the guidelines to preserve historic buildings. Tour the Birthplace of the Republican Party National Historic Site and participate in an interpretive program that reviews local and national events of the 1850s that led to Ripon’s role in creating national political history. The site is open daily Memorial Day through Labor Day and weekends in May, September, and October. For more details, go to ripon1854.com. WHOOPING CRANE The Whooping Crane Festival is a truly unique celebration of community, crafts, and conservation. This year's festival takes place on Saturday, September 9, on the grounds of the Princeton public schools. First and foremost, this festival celebrates the return of the whooping crane from the brink of extinction. From an all-time low of only 23 birds in 1941, the population has rebounded to over 600. Central Wisconsin serves as the summer home for one of only two wild populations worldwide. Princeton is privileged and proud to play a part in this success story. The event gives you and your family an opportunity to learn about a broad spectrum of wildlife conservation efforts from experts from around the state and the world. Even more importantly, they can suggest lots of ways you can be involved in conservation wherever you live and no matter your age. You can hear from a wide variety of experts speaking on different environmental topics from wolves to turtles and, of course, whooping cranes. You'll gain a greater appreciation for all kinds of wildlife. The fun starts with a pancake breakfast at 8:00 a.m. There will then be an amazing assortment of activities indoors and out

RIPON COLLEGE by Jaye Alderson During a gentle snowstorm in early 1851, on a hillside overlooking the village of Ripon, Ripon College’s first building was staked out. Today’s campus still reflects that early beauty, with 250 tree-covered acres including 130 acres of restored prairie and oak savannah. The three original limestone buildings and seven other campus buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Still adjacent to downtown Ripon, Ripon College affords applied learning opportunities and meaningful interaction between students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. Ripon College remains rooted in the liberal arts, with students being nurtured to have curiosity about the world and others in it, being engaged critically
with ideas and society, evaluating moral and ethical implications of choices, and having confidence in their ability to do and understand anything. Yet the College also responds to the needs of the future. The rapidly changing world of employment now emphasizes flexibility and adaptable skills. In the fall of 2016, Ripon College launched its unique and innovative Catalyst curriculum, in which students will earn a concentration in Applied Innovation, demonstrating their mastery of 21st century skills. The College is a leader among the nation’s top liberal arts colleges for delivering a transformational educational experience and focusing on individual needs of each student as they
move on to lead lives of meaning and accomplishment. Acknowledgement of this strength is borne out year after year as Ripon continues to place highly on numerous national rankings. The college dream remains attainable for most families at Ripon College. The vast majority of students receive financial aid, and nearly 40 percent of students are the first in their families to attend college. Thirty-five percent are Pell-Grant eligible—from families with an annual income of $30,000 or less— and Ripon outpaces all other schools in Wisconsin in graduating students who received Pell Grants. Students benefit from small class sizes and individual attention from faculty, who serve as mentors, advisors, and

Graduates include winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, Academy Award, and Grammy Award; best-selling authors; three Rhodes Scholars; and major contributors in business, education, and medicine. The College also established Pi Kappa Delta, now a national honorary society for debaters and orators, and the National Forensic League. In 1953, the College was awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, placing it among a select group of the nation’s top colleges. Jaye Alderson is an editor at Ripon College.

Mike began his love of business when he still worked in his parents’ store, Arrow Service Center, as a teenager. A few years later, in 1984, he founded Mike’s Bike Shop. “When I opened up, I said I’d give my new shop five years,” Mike says as he sips his coffee, hiding a smile. “It turns out, I’ve been able to support a wife and three children with this business.” There are helmets and clothing; balance bikes for the youngest cyclist; and mountain, racing, and road bikes for older enthusiasts. Mike’s passion is clear; he only sells the best models, including Trek, Surly, and Sun recumbent and adult tricycles.

GREEN LAKE AREA ANIMAL SHELTER MAJOR EXPANSION COMPLETE by Jean Cornelius
Two 10 x 14-foot cat colony rooms with large glass windows and an inviting reception/retail area greet visitors as they enter the expanded Green Lake Area Animal Shelter (GLAAS). The shelter wrapped up a major three-year expansion in 2016, launched by a large estate gift received in 2014. Expanded space for cats, a stainless-steel dog bathing tub, extra storage for food and supplies, and easy-to-clean Extrutech plastic wall panels are just a few of the improvements that enable the shelter to better serve the community and pets in need of homes. Adopting from GLAAS saves the lives of two animals: the one adopted and the one moving into the empty space. The shelter’s focus is on enhancing the lives of animals and people through education, adoption, and compassion. An open admission shelter, GLAAS accepts and places primarily dogs and cats. The shelter also offers low-cost spaying, neutering, and microchipping. Partnering with licensed veterinarians at the Spay Me! Clinic in Madison,
GLAAS has facilitated the spaying and neutering of over 7,000 animals, making a tremendous impact on the overpopulation of pets. Every day, shelter staff examines, assesses, and provides veterinary care for pets. They talk with potential adopters to create successful matches. Most animals end up in shelters not because of abuse or bad behavior, but because of "people” reasons: divorce, a move, lack of time, or finances. GLAAS relies on donations for vaccinations, medicines, heat, utilities, payroll, building maintenance, and veterinary services. A wish list of needed items is on their website and includes cleaning, pet, and office supplies. Donations can be made online. Volunteers are needed for cat and dog socialization, cleaning, office work, and event assistance. The popular fundraiser Lucky Dog CaTsino Night is an evening of casual gaming and raffles at Ripon’s Royal Ridges on April 29.

Another fundraiser, the Dog Walk, is held during Ripon’s Septemberfest event on September 16. Dogs, their owners, and people who love to see dogs in costume are welcome at Ripon’s Village Green for dog contests, raffles, and a walk on the Northwestern Trail. Top pledge earners for the walk win prizes. A house is not a home without a pet! Many are waiting at GLAAS to be loved and to bring comfort, happiness, wonder, and laughter to your life. Visit in person or online at glaas.org. The shelter is located near Green Lake, just east of the intersection of Highways 23 and 49 on Busse Drive. From the
Land
It finally happened! Fifteen years after the inception of the annual show that had been plagued by iffy weather at least one of the two days, we had two absolutely gorgeous fall days. The weather was great and the crowd the largest ever. Parking lots were brimming, artists were busy, and sales were brisk. The popular, unique root heads sold out on Saturday, so if this is something you wish to purchase, come early. The marble-blowing demonstration was a popular pausing point for visitors. Wildlife birds of prey was presented by AVES and enjoyed by young and adult fairgoers. Kyle Denton led the plant walk, identifying many familiar and unfamiliar plants.
This year’s speaker is Pat Ehrenberg, quilt and teaching artist, presenting Remembering Grandmother—30s era at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, and Sunday, October 22.
Local farmers offer pasture-raised beef, lamb, pork, chicken, and buffalo. Apples, honey, leeks, hickory nuts, garden vegetables, and gourds are popular commodities.
There is always some new artist that joins the show late, offering a surprise. Last year it was Jesse Messa with her hand-painted barn-board quilts. She will be returning this year. The show offers pottery, rugs, and weaving; Amish rockers; log and barn-board furniture; jewelry; wearable art; folk-art painting; metal sculpture; yarn; wool felting; stained glass; candles; soaps; and baskets. So many choices for that unique gift for your special someone.
In the Pole Shed, we offer pulled pork, ham, and old-fashioned hot dog sandwiches with Ray’s famous fried sauerkraut as an optional condiment. The Pie Shoppe sells pumpkin, apple, pecan, and farm-berry pies by the slice. Renard’s European Bakeshop sells artisan breads and pastries to take home. Don’t forget to get your bag of Chippy’s Kettle Corn, available in three flavors. Artisan cheeses available for a gourmet taste. Fairgoers enjoy the folk music of Jim Anger and an antique tractor show both days. The Voyageur Canoe & Tepee is a must-see. Native American Healing Lodge times will be announced at the show. This year, From the Land is Saturday, October 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the Toll/Londowski Family Farm, located one mile west on County Road J off State Highway 49 North. Dress for the weather and come and enjoy the 16th annual From the Land gathering of traditional arts and crafts with demonstrations held on the family farm that raises a flock of Suffolk sheep. Enjoy the beautiful fall scenery on your drive to the show! For more information about From the Land, please call Jan at (920) 216-1729 or go to fromthelandfestival.com. Experience the Magic of Live Performance in a Cool Historic Venue Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake holds true to its original purpose as a gathering place for the community. Built in 1910, the opera house remains a symbol of the history that has already passed through Green Lake, and since its extensive remodeling and grand reopening in the summer of 1998, it serves as a ready participant in the history that is yet to come. Thrasher Opera House has been serving Green Lake and the surrounding communities since Charlie Thrasher saw to it that there would be a place in town where many kinds of events could bring people together. The fact that the opera house was originally the hub of community activity is no surprise. When Charlie built it over a century ago, the facility hosted school dances, basketball games, town meetings, and town lectures. Before television and radio, the days of vaudeville brought traveling theatrical companies to Green
Lake. As time evolved, so did the opera house. Charlie operated his namesake opera house until 1939. However, by World War II the building languished into a warehouse and eventually fell into a severe state of disrepair, slated for condemnation. In 1994, Ron Hagstrom, a prominent real estate broker in Green Lake with a lifelong interest in broadcasting, music, and theatre, purchased the opera house and immediately began drawing up plans for a complete restoration. Rather than tear it down, he elected to bring Thrasher Opera House back to life. The renovation was complete in 1997. Thrasher Opera House reopened that summer, hosting several artists for the annual Green Lake Festival of Music, a highly regarded summer series of classical concerts that now makes the opera house its home base. In 1998,

Thrasher Opera House began presenting its own events, thereby reestablishing itself as home to community and cultural events. Registered on the National, State, and City Registers of Historic Places, Thrasher’s vision was realized. The community was once again enthralled with its opera house; children were laughing and people gathered to listen, watch, and be entertained. Since its reopening, Thrasher Opera House provides 50 to 60 nights of diverse programming that includes music and theatre performances, comedy, educational workshops for youth and adults, and school plays as well as community forums and debates. The opera house annually hosts two week-long residencies by the Missoula Children’s Theatre, each involving 55 to 60 area children, in January and June. The opera house is also used for weddings, business meetings, fundraisers, movies, parties, memorial services, and other events limited only by the imagination of the public, thus continuing Thrasher Opera House’s important and historic function as a community gathering place where emotions and ideas have been exchanged for over 100 years. The 2017 season offers another year of high-caliber performers, including musicians Richie Furay, Ana Popovic, Dervish, Ten Strings and a Goatskin, Jeffrey Foucault, Willy Porter, The Paul Thorn Band, Missoula Children's Theatre, Catie Curtis, the improvisational comedy of The Second City, and more.
