IN-ROOM SAFES DO NOT LEAVE MONEY OR VALUABLES UNATTENDED IN YOUR ROOM. We provide inroom safes for your use in each overnight room at no charge. Under state law, the hotel is not responsible for loss unless articles have been secured properly in these boxes. DOUBLE LOCKS AND CHAINS For additional security, use the deadbolt lock provided on your door upon entering. This will prevent the door from being opened by a regular room key. Balcony rooms—please be sure that balcony doors are securely locked. ADMITTANCE Do not admit persons to your room without first identifying them. A viewer is provided in your door for your convenience. If there is any doubt about the person’s identity, please contact the Front Desk. KEYS Safeguard your key. Be sure to leave it with the Front Desk upon departure. Do not leave it in your room. Do not give your key to others. We hope that these procedures will contribute to your comfort and well-being during your stay at our hotel.

FIRE SAFETY PROCEDURES Like all buildings, hotels can have fires. Plan what to do when you check in. You won’t have time to plan during a fire. First, find the two exits nearest your room. Be sure they are unlocked and unblocked. Then, count doors between your room and the exits so you’ll have a reference point if it’s smoky. Never use elevators during a fire. They could stop at the fire floor. When you hear an alarm, act, don’t investigate. Crawl in smoke. Fresh air will be at the floor. Take your key so you can go back into your room if you can’t use the exits. If your room door is hot, don’t open it. Your room may be the safest place to be. Seal all cracks with wet towels. Shut off fans and air conditioners. Call the fire department, signal at your window, and wait to be rescued. If fire is in your room, get out and close the door. Once you are safe, report the fire immediately. This information is to be construed only as a suggestion. Always use your judgment in any emergency situation.

HOTEL HISTORY

As you stroll through the Hotel during your stay, this historical background will give you an identity about your surroundings. We are sure it will make you more aware and interested in the pictures on our walls and in Historic Wiggins Tavern itself.

The history of our Hotel begins with Lewis Wiggins, an entrepreneur who had a great interest in preserving the Colonial Revival theme when constructing the Hotel in 1927. An integral element of Wiggins’ concept was to achieve museum status for the Hotel furnishings, and to this end, he acquired antiques both for the Hotel and for his own collection. Many of these antiques still grace our hallways, restaurants, and Lobby. The collection was added to daily, and by 1937 Wiggins employed a full-time antiquarian curator with a staff of up to 15, two of whom were assigned only to mingle with the guests to discuss the Hotel and antiques. Seeking a way to expand the Hotel’s dining facilities, as well as to offer “greater entertainment to my guests,” Wiggins bought the Moriarty building next door, determined “to construct faithfully an Early American Tavern with the atmosphere and appearance of an old tavern as it was in the days of our ancestors.” Some 141 years earlier, in 1786, Benjamin Wiggins, a direct ancestor of Lewis Wiggins, opened Wiggins Tavern in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. During its time, Benjamin had established a reputation with both travelers and area residents for the finest food and spirits in the region. Lewis Wiggins decided to move the old tavern to The Hotel Northampton. Meticulous attention to detail was taken in reassembling the Tavern in its new home. Carved paneling, hand-hewn beams, and stone and brick hearths were all carefully reconstructed. Antiques from both the original tavern and from other parts of New England were painstakingly collected to finish the restoration of the interior. Today, the Tavern is much as it was over 200 years ago, when old Ben Wiggins greeted his guests at the door and served them his famous American fare and baked goods. Through its 225-year history, Wiggins Tavern has been host to visitors from all over the world. Among the many travelers who have stopped here for a relaxing meal have been Eleanor Roosevelt, Jenny Lind, Herbert Hoover, Calvin Coolidge, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Richard Nixon. During World War II, U.S. Navy Waves billeted at Smith College were marched down Main Street three times a day for their meals at Wiggins Tavern. According to one of the Waves, there were two great things about being stationed in Northampton: “You survived the war, and you got to eat at Wiggins Tavern.” We hope you find our history interesting and get a chance to experience Wiggins Tavern. If you should have any additional questions about our history, please feel free to contact our Front Desk or Sales Office.
