Experience whitewater rafting down the Menominee River. Located three miles south of Niagara on Hwy. 141, turn east on Hwy. 8. Box 22, Niagara, WI 54151. 715-251-3886. Bat Cave At dusk, see bats rising in flight out of the old mine shaft on top of Millie Hill in Iron Mountain. Go east on 3rd Street (by Hardee’s) up to the top of the hill. Viewing area with parking lot and bench. Camp Five Museum Complex Logging artifacts and lore, pontoon float tour of the Rat River Wilderness, Green Treasure Forest Tram Tour, live animals at the Farm Corral, Nature Center exhibits, Cracker Barrel store and the Choo-Choo Hut’s sandwich, snack and refreshments. Cornish Pump & Mining Museum Located in downtown Iron Mountain, the museum’s focal point is a 725-ton steeple compound condensing engine, rising 54 feet from the floor and documented as the largest steam-driven pumping engine in the United States. Admission Fee. Open daily May through mid-October. 906-774-1086. Dickinson County Fairgrounds Located in Norway Township on Hwy. 8. Site of the annual Dickinson County Fair held Labor Day weekend. Summer activities include horse shows and weekly stock car races. Rustic camping facilities available during scheduled events. Fumee Lake Natural Area Two miles east of Quinnesec on US Hwy. 2, one mile north of Upper Pine Creek Road. A unique five miles of lakeside for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. Wetlands serve as a wildlife refuge area hosting rare plant and bird species. Iron Mountain Iron Mine Located on US Hwy. 2 in Vulcan, 10 miles east of Iron Mountain. Tours take you through 2,600 feet of underground drifts and tunnels to see
the reality of iron mining. Admission Fee. 906-563-8077. Knights Kingdom Community-built playground located in the Strawberry Lake walking trail complex near downtown Norway. Children’s play area with swinging bridges, zip line, maze castle, slides, swings and picnic tables. Handicap accessibility. Lake Antoine Park In Iron Mountain. Two pavilions, playground equipment, 748-acre lake with boat launch, swimming, fishing and water skiing. Menominee Range Historical Museum Over 100 turn-of-the-century exhibits of life on the Menominee Range. 300 East Ludington Street. Admission Fee. 906-774-4276. Norway Lake Park Ten miles from nearest town. Non-motorized boats only, swimming, fishing, hiking and hunting. Piers Gorge Located in Norway Township. Deep gorge cut by the Menominee River between Michigan and Wisconsin. Rushing water cascades over granite boulders, providing class III rapids for excellent whitewater rafting. It was the site of the World Cup Kayak Races from 1983 through 1987. Foot trails provide breathtaking views. Pine Mountain Ski Jump The ski slide, built in 1938, has seen more competitive ski jumping than anywhere else in the United States. An international competition takes place each February and provides a good excuse for a fun time tailgating even if windy conditions don’t permit skiers to jump. Skiers land mid-hill at 65 mph. You can walk up the ski jump to the top. Any time of the year it’s a grand view from this hilltop, looking out 30 miles and encompassing seven lakes. For info on the sport of ski jumping, go to www.skijumpingcentral.com or visit the US National Ski Hall of Fame in Ishpeming. From US Hwy. 2 in town, turn west onto Kent Street, just south of Chapin Pit, follow signs. In about threequarter mile, look for Upper Pine Mountain Road, which winds up to the hilltop. No charge.
