NewBridge

YOUR CONNECTION TO SUCCESSFUL AGING BY MARCIA HENDRICKSON

On January 1, 2019, NewBridge officially came into existence as a nonprofit organization serving older adults in Madison and Monona. Though a new organization, it has a long history of service. NewBridge formed from the merger of the four Madison Senior Coalitions (East Madison/Monona Coalition of the Aging, North/Eastside Senior Coalition, South Madison Coalition of the Elderly, and West Madison Senior Coalition). Each of these MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

senior coalitions has provided service for over 40 years. In 2015, the directors of the four Madison Senior Coalitions began conversations about sharing resources, integrating services, and reducing administrative redundancy. This led to three years of planning with representatives of each of the four Madison coalitions. The result is a new agency that will be a single, strong voice for older

adults in Madison and Monona. By maximizing our resources and integrating services and administration, NewBridge will more effectively address the issues of race and poverty and better serve the rapidly growing population of older adults in our communities. Over the next five years, NewBridge will work to increase the total number of older adults they serve by 20 percent. In each of the

AGING & CAREGIVER RESOURCES | 11 past few years, over 5,000 seniors have worked with one of the four Madison Senior Coalitions. NewBridge anticipates that by 2022, over 6,000 area seniors will work with the new agency each year. Serving more seniors is critical because of the dramatically increasing number of older adults. Those ages 60+ are currently the fastest growing demographic group in Dane County. This is due to the large number of baby boomers reaching their 60s and to increases in life expectancy. In addition to the rapidly growing senior population, the challenges older adults face are increasingly complex. Issues such as outliving retirement savings, lack of family support, deteriorating mental health, addiction struggles, and lack of transportation combine to make life for older adults difficult. Unfortunately, these growing challenges come at a time when there is a decrease in resources available through city, county, state, and federal programs to help seniors who are living at risk. NewBridge provides a variety of programs and services for these older adults to ensure longer, safer, and healthier independent lives.

Nutrition Sites—provide socialization and meals to seniors throughout Madison and Monona. Home Chore Program—connects volunteers to seniors who need assistance with household chores so they can remain in their homes. By merging into one agency, NewBridge can integrate these core programs to provide high-quality service citywide with reduced wait times. In addition, they will expand current programs that serve one portion of Madison into the whole city of Madison and Monona. Moving forward, NewBridge will have the infrastructure in place to develop new programs to respond to new issues affecting older adults.

Photographs provided by NewBridge. Marcia Hendrickson is the executive director of NewBridge Madison, Inc. She is the former executive director of the South Madison Coalition of the Elderly. Her goal is to create a strong foundation of outstanding services, programs, activities, and events that have been provided to residents of Madison and Monona for the past 40 years by the exceptional staff and volunteers.

NewBridge is connected to the past but going toward the future.

NewBridge services include: Case Management—connects case managers to seniors who need assistance accessing resources, such as food, transportation, affordable housing, energy assistance, and benefits.

The first Attic Angel Association charity ball was held in 1898 in the University Armory, known today as the Red Gym. It brought in almost $500 to benefit the poor—the equivalent of $15,000 in today’s dollars. The formal dance photo from UW-Madison’s Prom in 1911 shows what the inside might have looked like.

130 YEARS OLD and Still Playing BY KELLY CHERAMY The year was 1898 and Madison’s Attic Angels were planning a charity ball in the castle-like University Armory, which had been built just four years earlier. The event was the talk of the town. Elva and Mary Bryant’s plan was to entice the citizens of the growing city to have fun while uniting in a common cause—raising money to help build Madison’s first hospital. The young women’s resourcefulness and goodness had earlier led their father to name them his “attic angels” after he watched them descend MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

from their attic with armloads of goods to share with the poor. Fast forward to 2019 and the 130th anniversary of Attic Angel Association. Today’s Attic Angels—now numbering more than 500 serviceoriented women—are once again inviting the public to have fun in the name of charity. Their public celebration, Life is a Playground!, will be held on the Attic Angel Community campus on Sunday afternoon, July 28. Like the charity ball more than a century earlier, they are rais-

ing money to help the poor, but this time to build a playground that will serve homeless children and others who attend The Playing Field early learning center in Madison (playingfieldmadison.org). Unlike the charity ball in 1898, the 2019 event will have free admission and couldn’t be more casual: out with the formal gloves and tails and in with a youthful spirit, no matter one’s age. Children from 1 to 101 are welcome to enjoy everything from

AGING & CAREGIVER RESOURCES | 17 magic shows, technology exploration, and remote-control boating to trishaw bike rides, zoo animals, and traditional playground fun. The fundraising approach for the Life is a Playground! event has a modern twist as well, relying heavily on the internet and social media to reach people who may not be able to attend in person. “We hope that extending the offer to participate in such a broad and accessible way will attract a lot of extra passion that people have for making a difference in our own community,” says Judy Brannstrom, Attic Angel Association’s development officer. The fundraising goal is $50,000 to assure that children experiencing challenges, such as homelessness and autism, will have appropriate sensory resources for healthy emotional and cognitive development. Donors of any amount will be automatically entered into a drawing to win ice cream for a year from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream. Attic Angel Association has a long history of serving children and

seniors with a focus on health and well-being. In addition to helping fund Madison’s first hospital in 1903, the Angels were instrumental in other early-Madison healthcare initiatives that were handed off to the public health department and what is now SSM Health at Home. In 1908, Attic Angel Association purchased playground equipment for the City of Madison’s Burr Jones Field on East Washington Avenue, and in 1998, they helped build Warner Park’s community center. In the 1950s, they pioneered high-quality senior care and later added various living options. “In retirement, even when many face health challenges, we believe life is still a playground,” says Judy.

The 130th birthday party will be held on the Attic Angel campus, which holds both the Association headquarters and the senior living community. “Our shared campus honors our history of caring— for seniors as well as the greater community,” explains President Mary Ann Drescher. “As we display 130 years of deep Madison roots, we hope that people will appreciate that Life is a Playground! and that our fundraising event will be the talk of the town.”

Photographs provided by UW Archives. Kelly Cheramy is the outreach coordinator for Attic Angel Community.

Each year, the Association’s signature fundraising sales, including the huge Attic Sale, provide grants to support nonprofit organizations that serve children and the elderly. In spring 2018, they gave more than $200,000 back to the community. Since their grants program began, they’ve given more than $7 million and even more in time and resources. UW Archives, 2018s00398

DON’T LET MEMORY CHALLENGES PREVENT YOU

from Enjoying Life BY CLAIRE BITNER

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia does not have to mean the end of one’s social life. In fact, socializing is even more important for brain health in a person with dementia. Increasingly, local organizations serving people with Alzheimer’s and dementia are finding new ways to provide social outings and social groups. Socialization has long been considered an important aspect MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

of dementia care. A person with dementia may forget their loved ones or friends, but they can still have enjoyment when their loved ones visit. Memory challenges don’t change the ability to benefit from the experience of interacting with others. Memory Cafés are social groups that meet on a monthly basis and offer people with mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer’s, and

other dementias a chance to interact with their peers. The Memory Café model first appeared in Europe and has quickly gained momentum across the United States. For some, Memory Cafés provide a lifeline to their community. A caregiver who brought her husband to a Memory Café hosted by the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin (ADAW) stated, “My husband and I thought the Memory Café was wonderful! We don’t socialize much

ALZHEIMER’S & DEMENTIA | 25 anymore, and it was great seeing him happy and laughing with others. Opportunities like this make life so much better.” There are now over 100 Memory Cafés across Wisconsin. Each café is unique, and the activity changes each month based on the group’s interests. Recent activities have included drum circles, painting, and singing favorite songs from the past. Additional programs in south central Wisconsin include SPARK!, a program for people with dementia and their care partners to enjoy arts and socialize in a comfortable setting; the Alzheimer’s

Association’s Spry Society, a social engagement program for people in the early stages of memory loss; and Meeting of Minds, the memory enhancement program offered by the ADAW. Noreen Kralapp, ADAW dementia outreach specialist for Dane County, leads the Meeting of Minds group in Madison. Noreen said she has often witnessed the benefits socialization can have on a person living with dementia. Group activities draw people out of their shells and help them express themselves, she says. Noreen is especially impressed by the role group art activities can play. Group participants can converse and engage with others while they are busy practicing an art activity. “Art can serve as a bridge to reach the inner self and aid in the expression of thoughts, feelings, and memories,” Noreen says. “As this disease progresses and even if the ability to use words lessens, they can still express themselves.”

The next session of the memory enhancement program, Meeting of Minds, begins March 5 at Madison’s Central Library with a focus on creative and cognitively stimulating exercises, like painting or group storytelling, tai chi, and other relaxation activities.

Photographs provided by Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin. Claire Bitner is communications coordinator for the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin (ADAW). ADAW offers in-person consultations, community education, caregiver support, and a locally staffed helpline for people living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia and their caregivers. To provide social opportunities, in addition to Meeting of Minds, ADAW hosts Memory Cafés in more than 11 locations in south central Wisconsin with an additional 6 affiliated cafés. Making Friends WITH Aging, Illness, Grief, and Death BY KAREN REPPEN

Consider this: instead of being sources of fear, loathing, and denial, could it be possible to think of illness, death, and grief as lifelong companions bearing gifts that could be developed into well-respected, even celebrated skills? After all, aren’t these conditions essential parts of being alive? MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

Aging: Wisdom Maker In our culture, youth and its qualities, like vitality, beauty, competence, and strength, are considered ideal. Most people go to extraordinary lengths to maintain them for as long as possible. We perceive aging as an enemy, believing that it reduces us and makes us invisible or even

a burden. If we’re granted a long life (another ideal), we may find ourselves wrestling between being grateful and hateful for what we’ve become. But those are certainly not our only options. Might this be a time to stop struggling and make way for the wise elder to appear? When we stand before the mirror

END OF LIFE | 31 ...instead of being sources of fear, loathing, and denial, could it be possible to think of illness, death, and grief as lifelong companions bearing gifts ... even celebrated skills? and see grey hair, sagging muscles, and wrinkled skin, rather than being disappointed, let us look deeply into our eyes and smile. Let’s see someone that has not only survived, but thrived through millions of precious moments—each of which is a seed of wisdom that can be shared generously, yet humbly with the generations that follow, so they too may cultivate and grow into similar good fortune. Illness/Infirmity: Village Makers Let’s face it, being sick or injured can be the source of great suffering. Depending on cause and severity, these conditions can create no end of negative responses, including alienation from friends, neighbors, co-workers, and the greater world around us. But unless one is under mandatory quarantine to protect the public health, such unwellness could instead be a great opportunity to bring us together as a supportive, generous, and caring community that nourishes expressions of love and concern for one another. We don’t have to let professionals provide all of the remedies. Sometimes a bowl of chicken soup, assistance with household tasks and errands, or some quiet companionship are better healers than anything else. Go visit; you will make a difference. And when it happens to you, those you helped may just return the favor. Grief: Honor Maker Nothing lasts (in its present form) forever—ideas, jobs, relationships, favorite items, even life itself. When things end, it’s not unusual to feel a deep sense of sorrow that can affect us physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. But too often, grief is considered as something to hide and keep private, and our goal

is to get over it and move on with life quickly, as if nothing significant happened. But what then is the worth of those sources of deep meaning and abiding love? Might it be that grief’s purpose is to ensure that we fully and actively remember our need for connection and to give us reason to actively mourn and honor all that which has gone before us? Death: Meaning Maker How people die has changed a lot over time. Due to advances in modern medicine, people today are healthier and live longer than ever before. There are new interventions and treatments every day, tempting us to believe that death may even be optional. It is not. What is optional, however, are the choices we make and actions we take before we reach the end of our lives. There’s a saying that “death feeds life”—that without death, life would have little meaning. Many find that by keeping death in mind as we live out our days helps to give our life purpose and clarity, providing us with incentives to do things that are most important to us and to be better prepared for our dying time.

HOSPICE CARE Provides pain relief, comfort, symptom management, and supportive services to individuals who usually have six months or less to live. Typically, care is provided by a team consisting of a doctor, nurse, social worker, counselor, chaplain, home health aide, and trained volunteers. The team works together to focus on the dying person’s and their family’s physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. This level of care can be provided in one’s residence (collaborating with the home health agencies/medical care), at most hospitals (collaborating with your hospital team), at most nursing homes, and at an inpatient hospice facility.

CLEARING THE PAPER CLUTTER What Financial Stuff to Hold and What to Shred BY RBC WEALTH MANAGEMENT AND LAURI BINIUS DROSTER, CFP, MBA

If your file cabinets are overflowing with old statements and records, you are not alone. Knowing what you should retain and what you can shred is a common question.

if any of those bills are going toward tax deductions. Your bank statement is really the only record of online transactions. Keep them for three years.

BANK STATEMENTS Get rid of bank deposit slips and ATM receipts once you’ve reconciled your statement. You need to keep the statement if you’re paying bills online—and especially

TAX RETURNS Keep your tax returns for seven years. Toss your supporting documents three years after you filed your taxes. You’re usually safe from being audited after that time,

MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

unless you forgot to report a big chunk of your income. If you have self-employment income, keep the records for at least six years. MUTUAL FUNDS AND STOCKS Keep records showing what you originally paid for investments until you sell them and report the gain or loss on your taxes. Hold on to your year-end statements showing how much you received in dividends

ESSENTIAL PREPARATION | 37 or capital gains so you won’t end up paying taxes on them twice. Toss your monthly statements if everything matches up with your year-end report. IRA CONTRIBUTIONS AND 401(K) If you made a nondeductible contribution to an IRA, keep the records indefinitely to prove that you already paid tax on this money when the time comes to withdraw. Keep the quarterly statements until you receive the annual summary. Keep the annual summaries until you retire or close the account. HOME IMPROVEMENTS Even though most homeowners can keep their home-sale profits tax free, it’s important to keep home improvement receipts for as long as you own the house. You could end up paying a tax bill when you sell your home if you have lived in it for less than two years, if you end up renting it, or if you end up with more than $250,000 in profit if single or $500,000 if married. All home improvements that add value to your home (not just regular repairs) can lower your tax bill. CREDIT CARDS After making sure they match your statement, throw credit card receipts away. Keep credit card statements for three years. HOLD ON FOREVER Never throw away birth or death certificates, marriage licenses, military discharge papers, loan discharge notices, and Social Security cards. WHEN YOU TOSS Financial information can be very valuable to thieves, especially papers that have credit card numbers and Social Security numbers on them. Buy a shredder or take your old

papers to your next meeting with your financial advisor for shredding. SHARE WITH YOUR FAMILY After you have organized your financial papers, have a conversation with your adult children so they know where to find important financial information in case you are incapacitated someday. WHERE TO STORE Buy a home, fireproof safe to put your will and other important papers in. Make sure your power of attorney or designated family member knows how to access your safe.

All About Living

with Host Carol Koby BY LAURI LEE

All About Living, a weekly radio interview program produced by MidWest Family Broadcasting, helps to guide listeners of all ages on their life’s journey. Serving the older demographic by covering topics of common interest, the program helps MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

people lead vibrant and productive lives throughout the entire course of their lives. Segments air from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. each Saturday on HANK AM 1550 and 97.7 FM. All programs are also posted on carolkobyradio.com.

Executive Producer and host Carol Koby’s conversational-style interviews and subject matter appeals to a broad spectrum of people of all ages. Listeners are provided valuable takeaways from topics that run the gamut from health and finance

GENERAL | 43

CAROL KOBY to shared expertise from educators, policymakers, community activists, authors, performers, and fascinating individuals. People are encouraged to dig within themselves to find strengths at each stage of life and choose ways to express them. The programming reflects Carol’s passion for promoting lifelong learning, making informed decisions, and living full and purposeful lives. Listeners tune in weekly to discover interesting opportunities, innovative ideas, and valuable resources as well as to hear compelling stories of those who have overcome hardships or reinvented themselves. The information helps people who are dealing with their own health concerns or those of their partner, spouse, or parents. Some are planning ahead to know what to do when medications, mobility, or their health situation changes as they age. Carol is the bridge that carries the subject matter to listeners, and she uses the radio as her vehicle to convey educational and informative material.

Carol’s work before radio involved organizing women’s health programs and, in earlier years, serving as women’s director and reporter for WITI-TV (Channel 6) in Milwaukee and consumer advocate for WKOWTV in Madison. To gain additional credentials, she gave herself a 50th birthday gift to go back to the University of Wisconsin–Madison to obtain her master’s degree. She pursued women’s and consumer health education. For her leisure in aging class, she visited various medical facilities and discovered UW Hospital and Clinics had just launched Picture of Health, a cable television program. They happened to be looking for a moderator trained in broadcasting. Since Carol’s undergrad degree was in communication arts focusing on radio and television, she auditioned. She moderated the program nearly 10 years, until it went off the air. In spring 2002, Tom Walker from Mid-West Family Broadcasting approached Carol to initiate a radio program to deal with issues related to an aging population. The Aging Matters program started April 20, 2002, and has aired every Saturday since. It soon changed its name to All About Living to communicate the positive message that there is a lot of vibrancy, opportunity, and joy in aging. At age 76, Carol is still taking her own advice about how to live a purposeful life and finding joy in the journey.

CLASSICAL MUSIC

Opportunities BY SAMANTHA CROWNOVER

A study in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry reports happiness increases with age. How can you foster more happiness in your life? Curiosity is one way, says Dr. Barbara Fredrickson in her book Positivity. Are you curious, and yet intimidated by classical music? Take in a concert by Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society (BDDS), a group that makes the serious fun. A chamber music festival based in south central MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

Wisconsin, BDDS is a homegrown summer staple in its 28th year. BDDS has been performing “chamber music with a bang” since 1992 at Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, the historic Stoughton Opera House, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hillside Theater in Spring Green. Chamber music is generally performed by a small ensemble of musicians without a conductor in a smaller concert hall or

room. Combining both locally and nationally known guest artists, new and traditional chamber music, and delightful surprises, BDDS presents chamber music for three weekends in June. Music critic for the New York Times Anthony Tommasini attests that no prior knowledge about classical music is necessary. “Yet I’ve found that many people assume that knowledge of the art form is a prerequisite to apprecia-

GENERAL | 49 tion. I’d encourage those who are curious to just go to a performance and see what they think.” He asserts that a concert involving chamber music is not a test. “It’s an escape, an adventure, an enrichment.” At a BDDS concert, you can hear a beloved piece for four stringed instruments and a piano by a Romantic-era composer, such as Johannes Brahms or Clara Schumann, as well as a new piece commissioned in the 21st century by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. Joining artistic directors Stephanie Jutt (flute) and Jeffrey Sykes (piano) are musicians Carmit Zori, Israeliborn violinist with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in New York City; Axel Strauss, a German-born violinist living in Canada; Ken Olsen, Scottish-born cellist from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; members of the University of Wisconsin–Madison Pro Arte Quartet; and other renowned musicians. About 20 musicians make a pilgrimage to Wisconsin to perform in the prestigious festival every June. Throughout the concert, the musicians take time while on stage to tell the audience about who wrote the music, what the composers’ circumstances may have been at the time,

and why they love to perform it. Based on the theme of the season, a mystery guest or two might appear, or the audience might be invited to compose a haiku or fold a paper airplane and fly it onto the stage, as was the case in last season’s Toy Stories. What never changes is BDDS’ commitment to the finest caliber musicians found in North America and some of the best and most exciting repertoire anywhere. The audiences are intrepid, curious, smart, and up for anything. Inevitably, they leave the concert hall walking on air after an evening of musical adventure. So whether it’s BDDS or an-

other live music event, treat your curiosity to an escape, an adventure, and enrichment! Visit bachdancing.org or call Samantha Crownover at (608) 255-9866 for more information. Series tickets for three or more concerts start at $109.50 and single tickets start at $43. Tickets for the June 14 to June 30, 2019, season go on sale March 1. Photographs provided by Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society. Samantha Crownover has been the executive director of Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society for the past 22 seasons. She also consults on art projects and events and manages a historic property in downtown Madison.

COMMUNITY LIGHT ELDER NETWORK Helping Seniors Enjoy Trishaw Rides BY LAURI LEE

Community Light Elder Network, a Madison-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit launched in 2017, has the mission to illuminate the way to resources, services, and support for seniors and those who care for them. In summer 2018, the wheels began rolling for their Cycling Without Age (CWA) Greater Madison volunteer program to provide rides to MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

seniors on a trishaw pedaled by trained pilots. A trishaw cycle is a specialized e-bike with a motor assist to help pilots comfortably pedal when there are inclines or hills. Seniors ride on the front two-seat bench under a sun canopy, with their pilot seated directly behind them to make

conversing easier for those with impaired hearing and weak voices. New memories and moments of joy are created for passengers and pilots alike as seniors share their life stories. In addition to helping seniors combat social isolation, being outside provides the opportunity to feel

The Community Light Elder Network and CWA Greater Madison program was co-founded by Kate Shaw, CAPSW, and Duncan McNelly, MSSW, both University of Wisconsin– Madison alumni who have worked and volunteered with seniors and people with disabilities most of their adult lives. Their work through this nonprofit will focus on outreach, expanding partnerships, fundraising, and volunteer recruitment for pilots, volunteer coordinators, and technical support so seniors can participate in meaningful activities and have access to bike rides through parks in good weather. the sun and breeze, and enjoy nature and sounds of birds in the air. This unique mode of transportation provides a memorable, out-ofthe-ordinary activity for seniors to be able to enjoy community parks and places they can’t easily visit on their own. CWA Greater Madison is an affiliate partner and local chapter of a worldwide Cycling Without Age movement started in Denmark in 2012. There are more than 1,200 chapters around the world, over 2,000 trishaws, and more than 13,000 volunteer pilots. Wisconsin has over 60 locations with trishaws, more than any other state in the United States. Over 45 volunteer pilots are part of CWA Greater Madison, along with wonderful community partners and support. The Madison Senior Center helped launch the Greater Madison program, and the Wisconsin Bike Fed Share & Be Aware program provides pilot training to learn bike safety, laws, and bike etiquette. Pilots are bike enthusiasts, family members, and senior caregivers over the age of 18 who are comfortable riding

Plans for the future are to work collaboratively with the community and assist in purchasing trishaws for most area senior and community centers. The State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services offers grants covering 50 percent of the $8,400 to $10,000 cost (depending on amenities) of the trishaw to nursing facilities, so only half of the cost needs to be fundraised by the facilities to own their own trishaw. To sign up a senior for a ride, to become a volunteer, or make a donation, call (608) 630-8981 or visit communitylighteldernetwork.org or facebook.com/cwamadison.

Unlike hospice care, palliative medicine is appropriate for patients in all stages, including those undergoing treatment for curable illnesses and those living with chronic diseases, as well as patients who are nearing the end of life. Palliative medicine utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, relying on input from allied health professionals in formulating a plan of care to relieve suffering in all areas of a patient’s life. Palliative programs may vary according to the provider. Check the Retirement Housing & Long-Term Care section for the Skilled Nursing Care/Rehabilitation category, as they typically provide palliative care too.

Adult FAMILY HOMES THE HIDDEN GEMS IN SENIOR CARE BY HOLLY HANEWALL

Adult Family Homes (AFHs) are private homes operated by singles, couples, and families with backgrounds in the medical profession (physicians, nurses, and CNAs), or other highly trained and experienced caregivers. The owners/operators live side by side with up to four adults whose needs range from assistance with daily activities to memory care. These professionals, while drawn to this lifestyle for individual reasons, share a passion for caregiving. Licensed by the State of Wisconsin, AFHs are inspected at least every MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

24 months to ensure compliance with state-mandated standards. Lisa Hoffman, social worker and owner/operator of Hoffman House AFH in Madison, says, “Assistedliving communities do not generally provide long-term care. Residents must be independent enough to call for help or to take care of themselves. When residents withdraw to their apartments in the evening, their well-being is sometimes not known until mealtime the next morning. As residents require more hands-on support, families often

must hire private caregivers in order for their loved one to remain in the community. AFHs, because of their more intimate setting, 24/7 supervision, and routine safety checks, can provide for the needs of residents even as their level of care increases.” Owner/operator of Pleasant Meadows AFH in Deerfield Amanda McKinney conveys an important difference between assisted-living services and those available in AFHs. “Services in assisted-living communities go beyond room and

board, such as housekeeping, bathing, and wellness checks, which are available as à la carte add-on costs. AFH residents receive all-inclusive services from the start and can often be far less than that of an assisted-living community.” Kathy Hinzman, owner/operator of Sonrisas Adult Family Home in Verona, has devoted herself to caregiving since 1996. She frequently says, “Adult family homes are the hidden gems in senior care.” This intimate, homelike setting can be one of the best choices for “someone who prefers more one-on-one attention,” says Sara Peters, MSN, RN, at Sonrisas. “With a one-to-four ratio caregivers to residents, the close proximity results in individual needs and wants being responded to as they arise.” Kathy adds, “Although Sonrisas has a 24/7 awake care team, my living here enables me to be close by to ensure a high quality of care and to witness the close bonds that develop between caregivers and residents. It’s just so different than traditional assistedliving environments.” Mary Handel, whose mother is an AFH resident, says, “I love the communication I receive from the owner and staff about my mom.

The transparency they provide gives me incredible peace of mind. I know my mom is loved and cared for when I can’t be present.” AFHs are a viable and often morecost-effective option for families seeking care for their loved one. With a family-like setting and personalized care, older adults can thrive. For more information about Wisconsin AFHs, contact your county’s Aging and Disability Resource Center.

Between 2003 and 2005, Holly Hanewall provided direct in-home care around the clock to her mother, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2002, and her terminally ill father. After their passing in 2005 and 2006, the experience grew into a passion to advocate for families to receive care in the comfort of their own homes and in homelike settings rather than in an institutional facility. Holly is now a regulatory compliance advisor to adult family homes in Madison and its surrounding communities.

MADISON AND OAKWOOD VILLAGE

Make National News in 1948 BY BETH JOHNSON

If one took a look at the September 6, 1948, issue of Life magazine, they might be surprised to see Madison on the cover and in a feature story. Life, which at the time had a weekly circulation exceeding 5 million, named Madison “America’s Ideal City.” For the story, Life sent its famed staff photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt to Madison to photograph a 24-yearold mother as the cover’s subject. Jeanne Parr Noth, a Madison West High School graduate and University of Wisconsin–Madison student, was pictured holding her infant son with the accompanyMARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

ing headline “The Good Life in Madison, Wisconsin.” In celebrating Madison, the Life story mentioned the beauty of the lakes, the city’s prosperous economy, and the “steady flow of cultural and youthful ideas” from UW–Madison. Not far from where the cover photo was shot—in the backyard of Jeanne’s parents’ home—Oakwood Village was founded off Mineral Point Road by a group of congregations that believed “Lutherans in Madison could support a home for the aged.” When successful Madi-

son contractor George Vogel attended St. John’s Church, he was aware of the interest in founding a Lutheran-based retirement home and that land and buildings would be needed to make this dream a reality. At an auction in 1941, George had acquired the Normandale Sanitarium, a bankrupt rest home that had been owned by a group of physicians. The rest home consisted of six cottages and two buildings (Tabor Lodge and Hebron Hall). Although the 40 acres were too steep for farming or a housing development, the oak-covered hillsides were perfect for rustic

RETIREMENT HOUSING & LONG-TERM CARE | 85 cottages and dormitories. George called his business Oakwood Suburban Hotel Homes, and during the housing shortage of World War II, he rented the cottages and apartments to young families. Then in 1948, he agreed to sell the 40-acre campus to the newly formed Oakwood Lutheran Homes Association for $80,000—a fraction of its value. The first residents were charged $60 to $80 per month for a room. Oakwood was founded in response to a time of change in the American lifestyle. The years after World War II emphasized a contrast in the lives of many senior citizens between old ways and new. At one time, older individuals could expect to live in the large houses of their relatives with extended family. But now, homes were smaller, and the lifestyles of young, mobile families often left little time for older family members. Both young and old expected more out of life. Improved health, social security, and a longer lifespan helped create the concept of “happy golden years” after retirement, when travel, leisure, companionship, activity, and lifelong learning could be enjoyed for years to come. As Oakwood responded to this change, it flourished, adding additional buildings to the Oakwood Village University Woods campus on the west side of Madison, and built the Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge campus on Madison’s east side in 2000.

Marcy Turner has worked at Oakwood for 22 years and is now a supervisor in the Life Enrichment Department (formerly the Activity Department). She has seen many changes over the years. “We now offer a wider range of programs to meet more specific and individual needs and interests. ... We increased and improved the number and types of exercise groups and have added the Physical Wellness Department with personalized one-to-one workouts with a trained professional, added music therapy, staff horticulturalists, and have increased the number of life enrichment staff and opportunities that we offer throughout the day and into the evenings.” Residents now have the opportunity to make more personal choices related to their daily routine and pursuits. They have more dining choices, more outings available, and more control over their own health with improved wellness services on

campus. One of the most attractive changes is that residents now have the option to remain in their independent living apartment longer by bringing in services, such as housekeeping, medication reminders, laundry, and much more, allowing them to age in place. Today, Oakwood Village serves nearly 1,000 residents between its two campuses and employs more than 800 people. The number of residents Oakwood serves is about to grow this spring as 71 new apartment homes and 33 assisted-living apartments on the Prairie Ridge campus welcome the next generation of newcomers who will call Oakwood home.

Are You Prepared to AGE IN PLACE? BY TASHA ROBINSON

With the heart of the baby-boom wave now solidly in retirement, even the Breakfast Club generation has begun to hear from AARP! Just as music and fashion change from one generation to the next, so do our lifestyle goals. AARP’s 2014 study on community preferences of older adults showed that 87 percent of adults age 65+ MARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

want to stay in their current home and community as they age. That means if you grew up with Elvis and the Beatles, you probably expect to spend all of your retirement years living independently in your own home, rather than in assisted living or nursing care.

Unfortunately, the adult children who once were right next door to help care for their aging parents may live several counties or states away. Work commitments may also prevent them from being available as much as needed.

But that goal presents some challenges to health and safety.

Wisconsin is in the top 10 states with the highest concentration of people age 50+, according to

SAFE & HEALTHY AT HOME | 97 Just as music and fashion change from one generation to the next, so do our lifestyle goals.

U.S. Census data.1 For such a large concentration of our population to age in place, some level of support is needed. Is aging in place in southern Wisconsin possible if you do not have family available to help? The leaders of Agrace HospiceCare have explored that question and decided that Agrace can help! Not just as a hospice, but through a new Agrace service that’s available long before end-of-life care is needed. Age at Home by Agrace is a new private-pay home care service for Dane County seniors and anyone whose physical limits make it challenging to live independently. Unlike other home care services, Age at Home is backed by the extensive knowledge base of Agrace’s medical and social-work staff. Our compassionate caregivers provide help with daily activities, like laundry, housekeeping, and meal preparation, that can become tough to manage as age or illness robs us of energy and mobility. We are here to help anybody who needs a little support in order to remain independent and safe where they live. That could be someone of any age who needs physical help in their home, or even someone who has had a hip or knee replacement and needs a caregiver to come by and help them with

showering, changing the sheets, or making sure the pets are taken care of while they are recovering. Are you ready to reach out for a service like Age at Home? Here are some signs that it’s time:

• It has become difficult or

exhausting to keep up with household chores, preparing meals, and cleaning.

• Loss of mobility, vision, hearing, or memory has made it hard to care for yourself.

• You worry about safety when using the shower or bathtub.

• It’s a struggle to take needed medications as prescribed.

Agrace’s Age at Home service starts with a free home safety check. To learn more or get a menu of available services, visit ageathome.org or call (608) 327-7456. U.S. Census Bureau, 2012. American Community Survey PUMS as analyzed by the 1

• You want company and conversation.

• You don’t want to rely on favors from family or friends.

Moving MADE EASIER BY KAREN ROACH

A few years ago, Maggie McCardell was busy downsizing. She whittled away at the 5,000-squarefoot home in Fitchburg, where she and her husband had lived for 25 years and raised three children. She made good progress preparing their home for sale. “I must’ve taken 50 trips to Goodwill,” Maggie recalls, though she admits the basement—or “dumpMARCH–AUGUST 2019 JOURNEY OF AGING

ing ground” as she describes it— overwhelmed her. Then she learned about Segues, a senior move management company that made it easier for a neighbor’s parents and in-laws to downsize, pack, and move their homes. Maggie hired Segues owner Dawn Eyre to tackle the basement. “Dawn is the perfect mix of drill sergeant

and social worker,” says Maggie. “She helps you make tough decisions efficiently and then she gives you a hug.” When Dawn bought Segues, LLC in 2004, the five-year-old, Madisonbased company was among the first of its kind in Wisconsin. Her mother was already working for Segues, and Dawn hired her sister

SAFE & HEALTHY AT HOME | 103 to manage the Madison office. She added an office in Milwaukee, and today the company employs 20 senior move specialists and serves clients throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Segues is bonded, insured, credentialed, and a member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM). With a background in business, psychology, and social work, Dawn is well equipped to help seniors and their families navigate the physical and emotional journey of relocation and estate liquidation. She hires staff who bring the right blend of caring and can-do attitude to each client and case. As demanding as the job can be, Dawn enjoys watching families go from overwhelmed to overjoyed as they downsize, move, settle in, or clear out of their homes—some after 50+ years of living in one place. She says she is constantly amazed by how much fun her clients and team have throughout what is typically a stressful time. Segues provides personalized services, from planning and coordinating local and long-distance moves to arranging for donation, auction, or consignment sale of unneeded

items. On move day, the team unpacks and removes all boxes so the new home is move-in ready. Segues offers a free consultation to determine client needs. When the McCardells faced an unexpected second move, Maggie again called Segues. They appreciated the attention to detail, from creating a floor plan to hanging artwork and providing a second opinion. Working with Segues

“was comforting to me and made our lives easier,” says Maggie. “[On move day,] Dawn made sure our dog, Rosie, could find her stuffed animal. She even took care of our dog.” With each move comes an opportunity to hear stories and share memories. These moments build trust, and seniors and their families continue to return to Segues as their personal and living situations change.

Karen Roach is a senior move specialist with Segues in Madison.
